5.1. Introduction

The energy equivalent can be considered to be an alternate energy unit, precisely related to units such as the joule, calorie, or Btu. In energy talks, many units are employed. They are divided into two categories: (a) basic units and (b) source-based units.

6.1 Introduction

Energy planning is possible only with knowledge of past and present energy consumption and future energy demand. There are number of factor which affects the energy consumption pattern significantly. These include energy prices, availability, reliability of supply, uniformity of quality, convenience in use, technical and economic characteristics of energy using equipment & appliances, population growth, income rate of urbanization, educational status, social acceptance, social habit, present knowledge of beneficiary etc.

The energy planning differ in planning sectral wise and planning sources wise. For sector planning purposes, estimates are needed of the short and long run price elasticity for every specific energy resource. Where as in planning sources wise, one must consider its long term availability & its costs.

In general, to cope up future risk and uncertainty, we need to predict the future event. The likely future event has to be given from and content in terms of projected course of variables i.e. the forecasting. Projection is of two types – forward & backward. It is the forward projection of data variable, which is named as forecasting.

10.1 General

The term “biomass” generally refers to renewable organic matter generated by plants through photosynthesis. Materials having organic combustible matter is also referred under biomass.

Biomass is an important fuel source in our overall energy scenario. Biomass is produced through chemical storage of solar energy in plants and other organic matter as a result of photosynthesis. During this process conversion of solar energy in sugar and starch, which are energy rich compounds takes place. The chemical reaction of photosynthesis can be written as:

Energy is defined as the capacity of doing work and is necessary for survival. It is basic input to any society’s development and economic growth. Everything happens in the world is the expression of flow of energy from one form to other. There are different sources of energy, i.e., chemical, mechanical, fossil, nuclear and renewable energy.

2.1 Energy Consumption Pattern and Energy Resources in India

Energy is vital commodity in economic development of the world and any country. India also experienced a greater shift from non-commercial to commercial energy use after independence over the period. Industrialization and increased population has increased the consumption of commercial energy sources. The mechanization in agriculture and access to clean energy for household application also increased the consumption of the energy. however, the per capita energy consumption remains lower compared to the developed countries. In broader view, the energy used can be categorised in Non-commercial and Commercial energy sources that are used in India.

4.1 Introduction

The energy census survey has become the basis for planning & implementation of the village development based on conventional and non conventional sources which are appropriate to the local needs. The continuous and widespread use of non commercial sources of energy in the rural area is resulting in the large scale destruction of the environment. While the rural people get non conventional fuels at almost zero private cost, the social cost for meeting their energy needs has been increasing over the year. Hence the non conventional fuels acquired a special significance in the energy context.

The rural energy problem is multi dimensional & needs to be tackled through a multi dimensional integrated approach which would include augmentation of energy supply resources, technology transfer for optimum & productive use of resources, R & D inputs in particular for developing low cost energy options for the rural poor, education & training for rural users, linkage with various rural development programmes including village & small scale industries programme and adequate institutional & financial support. The multi dimensional approach for making a village self sufficient in energy planning is illustrated in Fig.4.1.

3.1 Introduction 
The continuous rise in CO2 levels is poised to culminate in a profound global warming impact. Projections suggest that by 2030, CO2 levels could nearly triple, driven by the burgeoning population of motor vehicles. This pressing issue underscores the urgency for the current generation to scrutinize its fuel choices and explore alternative options. Biomass emerges as a pivotal contender, offering a trinity of fuel phases. Escalating petroleum prices and growing apprehensions about the role of fossil fuels in contributing to global warming have spurred a quest for biofuels, recognized for their environmentally friendly attributes. The worldwide energy consumption has increased by an astounding 4 to 5% due to the combination of industrialization and the growing human population. Energy insecurity presents a number of puzzles, including rapidly decreasing fossil fuel reserves due to rapid industrialization, skyrocketing gasoline prices, growing dependence on Middle Eastern oil supplies, and the deleterious effect of fossil fuels on greenhouse gas emissions. Air pollution due to fossil fuel smoke from industries & transportation The UN's June 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro set the stage for addressing environmental issues such as acid rain and the greenhouse effect caused by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The goal of the Kyoto Protocol, an agreement between Russia, Japan, and Europe, is to reduce CO2 emissions. The ability of first-generation biofuels to lower CO2 emissions has drawn attention. But there is a lot of criticism about how they use land and how it affects the supply of food. A more complex option is provided by secondgeneration biofuels, which are made of leftover animal fat and lignocellulosic biomass. The third generation focuses on algae, namely single-celled organisms (SCO), as a viable substitute in the fuel industry. Within this discourse, "biofuels" refer to chemicals that are enhanced with energy. When burned, biofuels release fewer toxic emissions than fossil fuels, making them renewable resources. Furthermore, no carbon dioxide (CO2) is emitted into the environment by them; instead, any carbon released during combustion is absorbed by plants as they grow.

10.1. Acts, Policies and Schemes that Benefit Farmers
10.1.1. PM-KUSUM

As part of its Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs), India agreed to increase the installed capacity of electric power from non-fossil fuel sources to 40% by 2030. The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan Scheme aims to ensure energy security for Indian farmers while also upholding this commitment. In order to keep pace with the development there is rise in energy use but it has adverse effects on climate due to greenhouse gas emissions from burning of fast depleting fossil fuels. In this context, we need to harness and use more and more renewable forms of energy, especially solar energy that is plentiful on most part of India. Also, at several locations harnessing wind power and utilizing biomass could be effective alternatives. Solar based devices may also work in an integrated manner with small wind turbines as hybrid devices. At present, about 20% of the country’s installed electricity generation capacity is contributed by renewable sources e.g. wind, solar, bioenergy, hydro etc., which is about 71.325 Giga Watt (GW) as on 30^th June, 2018. In agricultural sector, energy is directly used for pumping irrigation water, operating different mechanized farm implements/tools and processing of foods. Share of agricultural sector in total energy consumption is about 7-8% and further increase in energy use from its present value of 1.6 kW ha^-1 to 2.5 kW ha^-1 is expected to meet the production target of next 20 years.

2.1. Solar energy

States like Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, and West Bengal have greater potential for tapping solar energy due to their location.

2.1. Introduction

The engine is the source that generates power. It transforms chemical energy in fuel into mechanical energy for power. Diesel internal combustion engines are invariably used in all the tractors. In these engines, very high compression of the air ignites the fuel as compared to spark plug that ignites fuel in petrol engines. The air in the diesel engine is compressed with a compression ratio typically between 15 and 22 resulting in a 40 bar (about 600 psi) pressure as compared to 8 to 14 bar (about 200 psi) in the petrol engine. This high compression heats the air to 550°C (1022°F). At about this moment, small droplets of fuel are sprayed in an atomized form directly into the compressed air in the combustion chamber.

2.2. How does it work?

Any engine will work with four strokes, namely suction, compression, power and exhaust (Fig 2.1). It will also complete two revolutions of the crankshaft. In the suction stroke, pure air is drawn into the cylinder through the inlet valve. The exhaust valve gets closed and the crankshaft completes half a revolution. In the compression stroke, the piston moves up while the valves remain closed. The air which is drawn into the cylinder during the suction stroke is compressed. There is a rise in temperature. The hot air ignites the fuel injected into the cylinder. The crankshaft again completes half a revolution. In the power stroke, the hot products of combustion, viz., carbon dioxide and nitrogen expand. The piston is forced down. The valves remain closed and the crankshaft completes half a revolution. In the exhaust stroke, the exhaust valve opens while the piston reaches the lowest point of travel. Then the burnt gases are swept out.

An engine overhaul is a thorough process designed to restore the optimal performance of an internal combustion engine. Over time, engines experience wear and tear due to constant use, exposure to different conditions, and aging, which can result in reduced performance, efficiency, and reliability. To mitigate these issues and prolong the engine’s operational life, an overhaul becomes essential.
A tractor engine overhaul involves dismantling the engine to diagnose and replace defective components, followed by reassembly. This process aims to enhance the engine’s performance, power, and overall efficiency, ensuring it meets the demands of agricultural work effectively.
WHAT IS AN ENGINE OVERHAUL?
An overhaul is an extensive procedure that includes disassembling, inspecting, cleaning, and repairing various engine components. This process aims to restore the engine to its original condition or enhance its performance. It is applicable to a wide range of engines, including those found in cars, airplanes, boats, and other machinery, with specific procedures varying based on the engine type and the extent of repair required.
An engine overhaul involves inspecting, cleaning, and either repairing or replacing internal components as necessary. Typically undertaken when an engine shows significant performance decline due to wear and tear, an overhaul can restore functionality and efficiency, offering a more cost-effective alternative to complete engine replacement.

Progress of any nation is driven by human curiosity and ingenuity. Engineering is one profession that has shown humanity the ways to meet its needs. It made the forces of nature work for the good of mankind. The biggest challenge for engineering profession has been its integration with the human needs. Engineering transforms technical conscience into applied realities. On the one hand, engineers are not limited by technology, and on the other, they are worried about the risks to the environment, health, sustenance and safety.

Engineer is a composite; “He is not a scientist, he is not a mathematician, he is not a sociologist or a writer; but he may use the knowledge and techniques of any or all of these disciplines in solving engineering problems.” Engineering in the broadest sense, relates to the “development, acquisition and application of technical, scientific and mathematical knowledge about the understanding, design, development, invention, innovation and use of materials, machines, structures, systems and processes for specific purposes.” Engineer works under various constraints: nature, cost, safety, environment, ergonomics, reliability, manufacturability and maintainability, among others.

This is how Neil Armstrong described himself, “I am, and ever will be, a white- socks, pocket-protector, nerdy engineer — born under the second law of thermodynamics, steeped in the steam tables, in love with free-body diagrams, transformed by Laplace, and propelled by compressible flow.”

Abstract

In India, the allium groups (onion and garlic) are important bulb crops for home consumption as well as sources of income to many peasant farmers in many parts of the country. The garlic bulbs are valued for their flavor and have wide applications in food and their antimicrobial, antifungal, insecticidal and antioxidative properties. The engineering properties of garlic bulb, clove and skin plays important role in the planning of various post-harvest operations like drying, sorting, grading, bulb breaking, peeling and designing the process equipments like bulb breaker, clove separator and peeler. The aim of this chapter was to study the engineering properties viz., physical, mechanical, aerodynamic and frictional properties of garlic bulbs, and cloves in both peeled and unpeeled form.

Introduction

India is rightly the spice bowl of the world. India has the largest domestic market for spices in the world. Indian spices are the most sought-after globally, given their exquisite aroma, texture and taste. Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is a world’s favourite, versatile horticultural commodity consumed for culinary, medicinal and antimicrobial purposes and is being cultivated for over 5000 years. The most important part of the garlic plant is the compound bulb. Each bulb is made of 6-26 cloves and is wrapped in a white papery sheath. Some varieties have a radish or purplish sheath. The bulbs are valued for their flavour, command extensive commercial importance because of their wide application in food and pharmaceutical preparations. Garlic is still probably nature’s most powerful medicinal plant to us today. It is recognized to have remarkable preventive and curative abilities. Garlic is mainly used aromatic spices and pickles as it has digestive, carminative and anti-rheumatic properties. It is being used in ayurvedic formulation since a long for curing lungs, healing the intestinal ulcer and checking muscular pain and giddiness.

The integration of Large Language Models into software development has created powerful capabilities for automated code generation, debugging, testing and application development. However, AI-generated code can introduce security vulnerabilities when models produce incorrect, unsafe or poorly validated programming solutions. This chapter examines the need for security-aware frameworks that combine LLM-based code generation with verification, rule-based evaluation and risk management. It considers the limitations of conventional rule-based systems, including rule explosion, inflexibility, maintenance overhead and limited personalization, and explores how AI-driven approaches can improve adaptability while maintaining safeguards. Particular attention is given to secure integration in sensitive domains such as healthcare, where generated code and automated analytical systems may influence clinical information and decision-making. The chapter considers data-driven evaluation, machine learning, genomic information and risk detection as components of secure AI systems. It emphasizes the importance of validating generated code rather than treating model output as automatically reliable. Secure deployment requires testing, human oversight, access controls, verification mechanisms and continuous monitoring. The chapter therefore presents safe LLM integration as a multidisciplinary challenge combining AI capability, software engineering, cybersecurity and responsible governance.

Improving the skill set of individuals is an important agenda of any development organization. The individuals may be anyone in the system who is directly or indirectly connected to the system.  Agriculture System is a complex and multi-stakeholder system with farmers as the axis of the wheel with other stakeholders’ forms part of spokes of the wheel. The scope for capacity building or training of every stakeholder has been peaking tremendously given the ever changing nature of the profession. The public and private training Institutions are vying with each other for conducting trainings in order to sustain the existence of the Institutions. Though a few institutions are really trying hard to take the technologies in real terms to the farming community, the following observations are very difficult to be masked.

The growing adoption of Generative AI in education offers substantial benefits in personalization, content creation, assessment, tutoring, and administrative efficiency, but it also introduces significant ethical, legal, and pedagogical challenges. This chapter examines the principles and practices required for responsible application of GenAI across educational environments. It focuses on algorithmic bias, fairness, data privacy, academic integrity, intellectual property, transparency, accountability, and the digital divide. AI models trained on large datasets may reproduce historical stereotypes or generate inaccurate and discriminatory content, potentially affecting marginalized learners. The extensive collection and processing of student information also raises concerns about informed consent, data storage, security, and appropriate use. Generative AI challenges traditional concepts of authorship and academic integrity because students may use AI to produce essays, assignments, and other academic work. The chapter discusses institutional policies, ethical audits, transparent content moderation, teacher and student AI literacy, human oversight, and multi-stakeholder governance. International principles such as UNESCO and IEEE guidance are considered as foundations for responsible implementation. The chapter emphasizes that trustworthy educational AI must remain human-centered, transparent, inclusive, accountable, and continuously evaluated.

ABSTRACT

The ancient fruit “Jackfruit” is one of the most remunerative and important underutilized native fruits of India. It is extremely versatile sweet tasting fruit and vegetable rich in nutritional value. Modern technologies are evolved for the development of value-added products from jackfruit is studied in the present study. To prevent from post-harvest losses the wine production from jackfruit juice which is a very good substrate for fermentationcan be done at larger scale. Popularity of jackfruit from the limited regions can be explored over the country. There is a good scope and possibility of marketing the value added products in the country. Value addition is carried out by minimal processing by changing its form to a valuable product having more shelf life. The developed products enhance good income opportunities for farmers and also entrepreneurship opportunities for small and medium enterprises for the popularization of jackfruit to a wider region.

3.1 Introduction

India, when gained independence in 1947, was predominantly an agrarian economy, with a stagnant national income. The country inherited a weak industrial base, restricted to only a few industries. Agricultural growth was virtually negligible, the country had a stagnant cropped area where by only a very small proportion of agricultural land was irrigated. On the eve of the country’s independence, on 15^th August 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s Prime Minister, reminded the country that the task ahead included ending poverty, ignorance, and disease and inequality of opportunity. India began the process of planning with the launching of the 1^st five-year plan in April 1951. The central purpose of planning was to ‘initiate a process of development which would raise living standards and open out to the people new opportunities for a richer and more varied life’. Afterwards, the five-year plans were formulated seeking development in a sustainable manner.

The country, over the past has travelled a long way indeed in its drive towards economic growth, modernization of the economy, feudal economy at the time of independence has been transformed into one based on a fairly developed and diversified industrial structure and a sound agricultural base with a large potential for further industrialization and development. The income and consumption levels of people, on an average, have increased and the consumption basket has diversified. A noteworthy achievement indeed has been the elimination of famines with which the country continued to be afflicted right until independence. That achievement is far from negligible since many other countries in Asia and Africa are yet to free themselves of this malady. There is also other achievement, varying from the successful functioning of a democratic system to the emergence of a strong and large scientific community (Dreze Sen, 1995). The figure 3.1 shows the per capita income during 1997-1998. It shows that the maximum income from Northern India compared to Southern India. However, having adapted the pattern of economic development that brought prosperity to the Western, India has also seen widespread environmental damage and degradation in the pursuit of economic growth. The concern for preserving the environment against the onslaught of industrial expansion, intensification of agricultural, and adoption of a resource-intensive lifestyle has not been given the attention it deserved, and the costs of environmental degradation have not been internalized in the development process. While the Indian economy study made by two World Bank staffers shows that the country is paying an enormous price for this onward march, which has brought in its wake ecological devastation and numerous health problems.

The science is a process of refining our understanding of nature by continual questioning and active investigation on questions. Students can approach science in this manner, rather than as a collection of facts to be memorized. The Environment is to provide up-to-date information to the important concepts in the study of environment. Information is presented from an analytical, observation and multidisciplinary perspective from which we must view environmental issues in order to deal successfully with them. The environment may be defined as response of a human being influenced by various factors such as abiotic and biotic, which are present in the ecosystems.

2.1 Multidisciplinary Approach

The approach of environment science is multidisciplinary in nature like botany, zoology, physics, hydrology, hydraulics, chemistry, biophysics, biochemistry and biology. It integrates various subjects and includes few of the most important topics of modern civilization as well as oldest philosophical concerns. Applied and basic aspects of environment requires a solid function in the nature of our relationship with nature, in addition to fields like economics, anthropology, history, sociology and philosophy of the environment.

10.1 Introduction

The consistent process of rapid urbanization and expeditious developmental activities have severely impacted the environmental components and thereby the quality of life. With limited natural resources, individuals and societies have to learn to bring in attitudinal changes in order to accomplish environment sustainability (UNESCO). From the Book “Our Common Future” (Brundtland Report), the concept of Sustainable Development can be understood as the “development that meets the needs of the present, but does not threaten the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.

With ever-increasing population growth, waste management has become a major challenge threatening environmental sustainability. The total solid waste generation was recorded to be 1.3 billion tonnes per year by the world’s cities in 2012, with an ecological footprint of 1.2 kilograms per person/day. With the intensity with which the population growth is happening coupled with urbanization, predictions are made that by the end of the year 2025, 2.2 billion tonnes of municipal waste will be generated (The World Bank, 2018).

The issue of environmental protection has become increasingly important in recent years, and one of the most effective ways to address this problem is through the use of recycled products. Recycling helps to conserve natural resources, reduce waste, prevent pollution, and combat climate change making it a critical part of any sustainable development strategy. In this chapter, we can explore how recycled products can help protect the environment and the many benefits that come with their use.

Bhuva is a small village in north-west Gujarat – India.  My mother was born there. The loving people of Bhuva called me ‘Bhano’ (Sister’s Son / Nephew) and it was my favourite place to go as a child. I have my fondest memories of Bhuva, but could not visit for several decades, until when I was once at the Junagadh Campus of Gujarat Agricultural University, to inaugurate the International Conference on New Developments in Agriculture. Bhuva was not too far and I decided to go there. Soon as I reached, a familiar face, now aged with time, recognized me from a distance and with tears rolling from his old eyes (and mine) he hugged me, calling out “MaroBhano, MaroBhano” (My sister’s son, my sister’s son)! Now in his eighties, it was overwhelming to meet Nanji Ata, who I always remembered being wise, educated and cheerful. He was a relatively progressive farmer with about 6 to 7 acres of land, a few cows and a buffalo. Though water was scarce and saline, he managed to make a good living and was considered a well to do man.

Ergonomics, also known as human factors engineering, is a multidisciplinary f ield that focuses on designing and arranging environments, products, and systems to fit the people who use them. The primary goal of ergonomics is to enhance efficiency, safety, and well-being by optimizing the interaction between humans and their work environment.

Posture : Examining how people sit, stand, and move to prevent musculoskeletal disorders and discomfort.

Repetitive Motion: Addressing issues related to tasks that involve repetitive movements, which can lead to strain injuries.

Ergonomics (also known as Human Engineering, Human Factors or Human Ergology) is the scientific study of relationship between a person and his/her working environment. The term environment includes the tools, materials and method of work, ambient conditions and physical environment in which the work is carried out, and also the organizational factors. Ergonomics application can help in increasing the efficiency and productivity, reducing drudgery and occupational health problems, and enhancing safety of workers in various activities.

Flooding and soil erosion are closely connected because concentrated runoff detaches, transports, and deposits soil material throughout a watershed and river system. Raindrop impact initiates splash erosion, while surface flow produces sheet, rill, and eventually gully erosion. Sediment generated from fields and channels reduces reservoir capacity, raises riverbeds, obstructs drainage, and lowers channel conveyance, thereby increasing flood risk. This chapter explains erosion mechanisms, classifications, influencing factors, gully development, sediment yield, sediment-delivery ratio, suspended and bed loads, and sediment-transport models. It also examines soil-loss estimation and agronomic or structural conservation measures that can reduce erosion, control sediment movement, and improve watershed-level flood management

5.1 INTRODUCTION

A GIS database without single error is reliable for decision making. There are various possible sources of errors in GIS. If an error is not removed during scanning, the final output will also have that error. Besides whatever the work has been carried on wrongly scanned map it will add to errors because the source map itself's erroneous. This is like garbage in garbage out proverb. If wrong data is taken for analysis it will only result in wrong output. Hence it is important to remove error at every stage of GIS work. It is important to locate the sources of errors so that due care may be taken while handling a project.

5.2 ORIGINAL SOURCES OF ERRORS

All the equipments which give attributed data and spatial data will give errors. Before going to field or before collecting data all the related instruments should be calibrated properly. Also the instrument should not cross the permissible error. Besides these while using data from diversified sources errors pertaining to those instruments are mixed to give a different result. When very good accuracy is desired data should be collected from high end equipments. Even if one adds the data from a comparbly less accurate instrument to the data of many accurate instrument is then the result obtained finally will not reliable enough. Global Positioning System (GPS) is available with mm accuracy to meters accuracy. Also surveying with suitable map projection and datum is important; otherwise the result will be wrong. Survey instruments posses some inaccuracy and when a person is using it he should have the accuracy over the instrumental like rain gauge, water level recorders which give attributed data which should be checked for instrumental inaccuracies and method of data collection before using it. Likewise satellite and aerial sensors miss some data and some error are inherent. Such errors should be removed before moving ahead. Errors are resulted due to map reduction, enlargement, data editing and computation method adopted. At the same mapping instruments also possess inaccuracies. When after certain interval a person is going for survey, the registered object may have been changed. Many new features might have come up. Hence the established control points are changed and if the wrongly placed control points are taken for survey then the result itself will be wrong. If proper resolution is not available in the instruments, then the instruments may not capture the minute details which are required.

Introduction

The GIS database is a model of real world. It goes without saying that there is an inherent discrepancy between GIS database and the real world it represents. This is so because all models are fraught with cognitive issues and remain as approximations. To realize the objectives of a GIS, geographical data collected, entered and processed are to be sufficiently error free and reliable.

Errors can be statistical errors like mistakes, wrong inputs or faulty field surveys or system errors like excessive tolerances or high RMS error. The spatial database has further problems in the sense that the real world phenomena are not always intrinsically discrete. For instance where is the bank of a shallow river? Where is the boundary between two soil types? These are but a few questions revealing the fuzzy nature of geographic data. Many soil scientists, geographers have noticed that carefully drawn boundaries or iso-lines on maps in general give misrepresentations of change that are often gradual, vague or fuzzy. Traditional cartography as a medium of spatial data handling had a solution to such problems. But now when digital data are handled, they need to be stored with certain precision. Moreover, the spatial variation of natural phenomena is not just a local noise function or inaccuracy that can be removed by collecting more data or by increasing the precision measurement but is often a fundamental aspect of nature that occurs at all scales. (Goodchild, 1980; Mark and Aronson, 1984). This means residual unmapped variation is a remarkable problem in geographical information processing. It is therefore a prerequisite to fully understand how errors arise or propagated in GIS and what might be the effects of errors on output.

The establishment of a technology transfer office is an important and complex process for an organization. It needs careful planning to ensure its long-term sustainability. Before establishing a TTO, it is essential to evaluate whether institution’s core mission includes research commercialization, and if the volume and quality of its research output justify the need for an inhouse TTO. For institutions that may not meet all criteria, those institutions can collaborate or outsource for TTO services. It is also important to decide about its operational scope, funding, management, and for what kind of issues the office should develop a policy. There is no “right” way to set up a TTO, but successful TTO does require considering some key issues. This chapter outlines key steps and considerations for establishing a TTO. It also explains what physical infrastructures are needed, manpower, outlines the responsibilities and powers of TTOs.
2.1 Evaluating the need for a TTO
Establishing a TTO is an important step for any research focused organization. But before initiating a planning process for a new TTO, the organization must review its relevance by considering a few fundamental points:

1. Is institution’s mission focused on “research commercialization” If an institute’s primary mission is education, or it does not support research it might not be justified to create a TTO. For such institutions, it usually makes better sense to seek alternative solutions to the occasional technology transfer without the expense of a formal office. But institutions with strong research commercialization focus, a TTO has the ability to contribute meaningfully to the mission. The Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM), USA has identified following key motivations for initiating academic technology transfer:

Theory

The energy available in food is expressed in unit is called joules or calories. One kilocalorie is equal to 4.184 kilojoules. The kilocalorie is defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 kg of water by 1°C. The calorific/ energy value of foods is usually determined using the instrument called bomb calorimeter. It is working based on the principles of calorimetry. Basically, this device burns a food sample and transfers the heat into a known mass of water. It measures the heat produced when the food sample is ignited by an electric spark in the presence of oxygen and platinum which acts as a catalyst. The quantity of food sample to be tested is placed inner part and known volume of water is taken in outer part of the bomb calorimeter. When the food sample is electrically ignited, the surrounding water absorbs the heat produced. The energy value of the food is calculated by measuring the rise in temperature of water.

through a series of biochemical processes pretreatment, enzymatic saccharification, and microbial fermentation and to evaluate sugar yield, ethanol concentration, and fermentation efficiency.
Introduction and Theoretical Background
Ethanol (C2H5OH), commonly known as ethyl alcohol, is one of the most important biofuels and renewable energy sources in the modern era. It is a clear, volatile, and flammable liquid that can be used both as a fuel additive (blended with gasoline to form gasohol) and as an independent energy source in modified internal combustion engines. In addition, ethanol is extensively used in the pharmaceutical, beverage, and chemical industries. Globally, more than 30 billion litres of ethanol are produced annually, primarily via fermentation of sugar-rich feedstocks such as sugarcane juice, molasses, and starch-based crops like maize and wheat. However, reliance on these food-based resources has raised sustainability and food security concerns. Therefore, attention has increasingly shifted toward lignocellulosic biomass, such as agricultural residues (paddy straw, corn stover, bagasse, etc.), which are abundant, renewable, and inexpensive.
Paddy straw, a by-product of rice cultivation, is a promising raw material for bioethanol production due to its high cellulose (30–40%) and hemicellulose (20–30%) content. However, the complex structure of lignocellulosic biomass, reinforced by lignin and silica, restricts enzyme accessibility to polysaccharides. Hence, pretreatment is essential to break down lignin and enhance enzyme digestibility before fermentation.

13.1 Introduction

Eutrophication, means an increase in chemical nutrients — typically compounds containing nitrogen and phosphorus in an ecosystem. It may occur on land or in water. The term is however often used to mean the resultant increase in the ecosystem’s primary productivity (Fig. 13.1), in other words excessive plant growth and decay and even further impacts, including lack of oxygen and severe reductions in water quality and in fish and other animal populations.

Successful irrigation development requires careful evaluation of soil and land characteristics before irrigation is introduced or expanded. This chapter deals with the principles and criteria used to evaluate land for irrigation and determine its suitability for sustained agricultural production. Important soil and land characteristics considered include surface-soil texture, particle-size class of the subsoil, coarse fragments, soil depth, permeability, salinity, exchangeable sodium percentage, slope and drainage. These factors determine the ability of land to store and transmit water, support root growth and withstand potential problems associated with irrigation. The chapter introduces land irrigability classification and explains the overall capability index (Ci), including its calculation and interpretation. Subclasses are considered to identify specific limitations affecting irrigated agriculture. The chapter further discusses land suitability classification and the structure used for assessing suitability. Physical condition of soil is included as an important component of land evaluation. By integrating soil, water and landscape characteristics, the chapter provides a systematic basis for identifying suitable land, recognizing limitations and planning sustainable irrigation development.

Performance metrics and indicators
Traditionally, in the past, TTOs’ performance was measured in monetary terms, such as universities’ revenues derived through commercialization. The methodology, however, is prone to shortcomings, in light of the fact that various TTOs do not receive significant amounts of financial proceeds through their technology transfers. In addition, relying on income does not depict a TTO’s true potential, in light of the fact that it does not account for the total range of outputs of research and commercialization opportunities. Recognizing these limitations, academics have found innovative ways to measure TTO efficiency, such as monetary and non-monetary indicators. Financial indicators typically entail measurable outcomes such as number of signed licenses, income from licenses, royalties collected, equity income, and number of spin-offs or startups created. These are actual gauges of the economic returns from commercialization efforts, and in the majority of instances are used in the context of benchmarking the performance of a TTO in a comparative context, perhaps against peer institutions or industry averages. Non-financial indicators consist of royalty distributions to academics, having an integral role in encouraging academics to participate in commercialisation activity. By incorporating monetary and non-financial metrics, universities might have an enhanced, comprehensive evaluation system for their TTOs. Such evaluation is sure to ensure assessment extends beyond short-run monetary metrics and looks to incorporate several organization, institutional, and research-oriented determinants in driving successful technology transfer.

Abstract

The paper presents an approach of selecting suitable areas for artificial groundwater recharge structures through remote sensing and integrated terrain analysis by statistical method. The study area “Ayyar basin” is an aquifer system of gneisses and charnockite litho-units in Tiruchirappalli district, Tamil Nadu. The area has witnessed a steady decline in groundwater table. Hence, the scope for artificial groundwater recharge was studied in this area with the help of Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCS&T).

Chapter 5 shifts our focus to the direct and indirect consequences of this critical environmental driver: the evaluation of crop responses to weather. This chapter is dedicated to understanding, quantifying, and interpreting how variations in meteorological conditions—such as temperature, solar radiation, precipitation, humidity, and wind—directly influence the physiological processes, developmental progression, biomass accumulation, and ultimate yield of cultivated crops. Abstract

The knowledge of engineering (physical) properties constitutes important and essential data in the design of machines, storage structures and processes. The present investigation was carried out determine the physical parameter (diameters, mass, volume, density, sphericity, angle of repose etc.) of varieties KPS 10. The moisture content in green pea (KPS 10) was observed 411.77% (db). The average values of dimensional and geometrical parameter like length (D₁), width (D₂), height (D₃), AMD, GMD and SMD were found 9.517mm, 9.343 mm, 7.707 mm, 8.856 mm, 8.816 mm and 15.305 mm respectively. Mean values of mass of 1000 pea seeds, volume, bulk density and true density were found 329.501 g, 0.2 ml, 0.275 g/cm₃ and 0.304 g/cm₃ respectively. Average values of angle of repose, sphericity, porosity and moisture content were found 24.7, 0.926 %, 9.528 and 80.96%, respectively.

ABSTRACT

The present study reports shoreline changes at Gopalpur along east coast of India for 30 years during 1973-2003. In order to understand the trend of sediment transport, shoreline changes at the vicinity areas viz. Rushikulya and Bahuda estuaries are also discussed. Geomorphological investigation is also carried out to understand the processes acting on this system. One Landsat image (1973) and two IRS 1C/1D images (1993 and 2003) were used for the study. The data were subjected to digital analysis using ERDAS Imagine and management of information layers using ARC/INFO GIS software. The results of the study show that the changes occurred differently in three distinct spatial features namely, i) sand spit ii) beach and, (iii) channel zone. Changes documented in these imageries reveal that the lengths of NE spit and SW spit are increased and decreased respectively in thirty years. Areas of NE and SW spits are also showing the similar pattern. Beach is almost stabilised and a slight decrease of 0.28 km in length is observed. However, area has been increased in the southern beach. Towards north, the beach area is also increased over a period of thirty years. The change of width of the beach is not found to be significant. The mouth near channel zone is reduced to 70 meter from 135 meter during the period of study.

10.1 Evapotranspiration (ET = Evaporation + Transpiration)

Evaporation is a diffusive process by which water from natural surfaces, such as free water surface, bare soil, from live or dead vegetation foliage (intercepted water, dewfall, guttation etc) is lost in the form of vapour to the atmosphere. It is one of the basic components of hydrologic cycle.

Likewise transpiration is a process by which water is lost in the form of vapour through plant surfaces, particularly leaves. In this process water is essentially absorbed by the plant roots due to water potential gradients and it moves upward through the stem and is ultimately lost into the atmosphere through numerous minute stomata in the plant leaves. It is basically an evaporation process. However, unlike evaporation from a water or soil surface, plant structure and stomatal behaviour operating in conjunction with the physical principles governing evaporation modify transpiration.

Thus, evapotranspiration is a combined loss of water from the soil (evaporation) and plant (transpiration) surfaces to the atmosphere through vaporization of liquid water, and is expressed in depth per unit time (for example mm/ day). Quantification of evapotranspiration is required in the context of many issues:

Evapotranspiration is the combination of two separate processes named evaporation and transpiration. Evaporation accounts for the movement of water to the air from sources such as the waterbodies and soil. Transpiration accounts for the movement of water within a plant and the subsequent loss of water as vapour through stomata in its leaves. So evapotranspiration is a bio-physical process.

Evaporation

The change of state of water from liquid to the vapour and its diffusion into the atmosphere is referred to as evaporation. During evaporation, water molecules absorb energy which gives them the motion required to escape from the surface of liquid and become a gas. Since a certain amount of energy is consumed in the process of evaporation, the remaining liquid is cooled by an equivalent amount. Thus, the process of evaporation is always accompanied by a cooling effect.

As evaporation proceeds, the surrounding air becomes gradually saturated with water vapour and the process will slow down and might stop if the wet air is not transferred to the atmosphere. The replacement of the saturated air with drier air depends greatly on wind speed. Hence, solar radiation, air temperature, air humidity and wind speed are meteorological parameters to be considered when assessing the evaporation process.

In agrometeorology, evaporation is defined as the maximum possible loss of moisture from a wet, horizontal, flat surface exposed to weather parameters, which exist in the vicinity of plants. Evaporation is an essential part of the water cycle. It is the primary pathway through which water moves from the liquid state back into the water cycle as atmospheric water vapour. The oceans, seas, lakes and rivers provide nearly 90 per cent of the moisture in the atmosphere via evaporation, with the remaining 10 per cent being contributed by plant transpiration. A very small amount of water vapour enters the atmosphere through sublimation, the process by which water changes from a solid (ice or snow) state to a gaseous one, bypassing the liquid phase.
