ABSTRACT
Biomethanation is the process of generating energy from anaerobic digestion (AD) of organic refuse. This helps reduce dependency on fossil fuels while reducing CO₂ emission. Organically-rich kitchen refuse (KR) generated daily from the households all over the world could be a good candidate to biogasify, though the quantity and quality of biogas depends on the KR proximate. To enhance biogasification, KR is subjected to physical, chemical and/or biological pretreatment. Physical pretreatments include chopping, grinding, ultrasonication and steam explosion, whereas chemical pretreatments could be by an alkali or a base. Biological treatment involves digestion of the organic matters by individual microbe or its consortium, although it takes place naturally. For biological treatment, standardising the substrate and inoculum ratio is essential. Candidate strains must be mutually compatible to formulate a microbial consortium. Bacillius seems to be a potential candidate as it is a facultative anaerobe exhibiting multiple essential enzyme activities (viz., amylase, cellulase and lipase). Maintaining an optimal pH of 7.0 and temperature of 37°C before and during anaerobic digestion is suggested. Other important factors in digestion include organic loading rate, retention time, C/N ratio, volatile fatty acids (VFA) concentration, etc. VFA content is vital as its accumulation during acidogenesis adversely affects the AD by dropping pH values to unfavourable levels. From very ancient time the farming was practiced organically without using any chemical pesticides or fertilizers. In the mid-19th century, the chemical farming was introduced and the adverse impact of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture is in sight with deterioration of soil quality, quality of food and so on.The indiscriminate use of agro-chemicals in different crops causes numerous health hazards as well. In this context, organic farming came into existence in 20th century due mainly to produce quality foods through the rapid change in agriculture sector. Therefore, an attempt was taken through present investigation to cultivate potato without using any synthetic agro-chemicals by employing Kufri Pukhraj cultivar during kharif season. Potato is basically rabi season crop but due to climatic advantages of the south Chhotanagpurplateau of Jharkhand it can successfully grow during kharif season too.

Abstract

The per capita availability of fresh water in the World is continuously decreasing. It is reported that in the World about 69 percent of total water resources developed are used for irrigation, 23 percent for industries and the balance is used by the domestic sector. About 60 percent to 70 percent of water used in domestic sector is returned as waste water. Substantial quantities of water used by industries are also returned. To meet the increased food requirements of the global population, there is constant pressure for increase in food production. Since, agricultural productivity depends on availability of water; there is increased demand of water for irrigated agriculture. On the other hand, due to increased demand of water for other sectors, quantum available for irrigation sector is getting reduced. So, for meeting the increased irrigation demand, it is necessary to economise the use of water for irrigation by adopting improved technologies and improving the water use efficiencies. 

Abstract

Arsenic, although a non-metal, is very often referred to as a heavy metal. Its provenance and contents in recently formed or least weathered soils depend on the type of rocks and intensity of geochemical processes. The variation is exemplified in shale, where As content varies from 1 to 900 mg kg-1. In highly weathered soils, where pedochemical processes exceed geochemical processes, the content is generally below the levels that are toxic to life forms. In the Bengal basin, As content is low in soils, but high in the ground water (beneath the vadose zone). This suggests that As has been sufficiently leached from soils. The solubility of most of the As-bearing soil minerals is high, and it occurs as anions (AsO33-, or AsO43-) in soil solution. The soils of the Bengal basin are alkaline in reaction, mostly fine textured with almost even distribution of particle size fractions, and moderately drained. Minerals like micas and feldspars dominate their coarse fractions, whereas illite (40-47%) and smectite (24-30%) are dominant in clay fractions. Both inorganic and organic colloids are negatively charged that cannot retain anions. In many soils in the world, leaching of As is well documented. 

Abstract

In view of the fast depletion of ground water reserves, uncertainty of rains and growing food demands due to human population explosion, efficient use of water available for crops has become highly relevant. In recent years, the use of superabsorbent polymers (saps) has been viewed as an innovative tool to improve water use efficiency in agricultural operations. Pusa Hydrogel, an indigenous superabsorbent hydrogel technology, has been developed for improving water use efficiency of agricultural and horticultural crops. They can absorb a minimum of 400 times of their dry weight of pure water and gradually release it according to the needs of the crop plant. So, it is used as soil moisture conservator and reduces number of irrigation. Because of their neutral ph, they do not affect nutrient availability, soil chemical composition, action of other agro chemicals, viz. fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, etc. Pusa hydrogels are found to improve the physical properties of soils. Increase in porosity results in improvement in seed germination and rate of seedling emergence, root growth and density, and reduced soil erosion due to reduction in soil compaction. It also increases biological/microbial activities in the soil, which increase oxygen/air and nutrient availability in root zone of the plant. So, ultimately it is helpful for increasing crop productivity.

The district Murshidabad lies within the Younger Deltaic Plain and the Bhagirathi Recent Surface has been considered as the severe flood affected district of West Bengal state, India. Murshidabad is highlighted one in terms of occurrence of flood due to its typical geographic location and diverse geomorphological characteristics. The district witnessed frequent floods because of high intensity of rain fall in the basin area of Bhairavi-Jalangi-sealmari rivers. Inflow of flood water from Ganga-Padma in high spate condition further aggravates the congestion of drainage. Lack of proper drainage is also responsible for flood in the upstream side in the western part as well as beyond the Berhampur town. Flood management may be undertaken through physical and socio-economic measures, which includes the scientific control of reservoirs; construction of new barrages, improvement of river channels, removal of human encroachment along river side, timely flood warning and forecasting, preparedness of essential services along with proper flood plain planning are indispensable. Addressing of socio-economic problems may help to combat the flood situation in an effective way.

Abstract

More than 73% of its total population lives in rural areas and depends primarily on agriculture for livelihood. The performance of agriculture determines food and nutrition security which is important for reducing poverty and achieving sustainable growth. Production and productivity has increased manifold and yields of major crops like paddy, pulses, oilseeds and vegetables have more than trebled in the last four decades. The impressive long term growth in agriculture helped in taking the state out of famines and serious food shortages into one of the food surplus states and ensuring food, nutrition and livelihood security. The state is characterized by wide diversity and considerable spatio-temporal variations in growth and productivity. In fact, agriculture isincreasing with public investment in infrastructure including irrigation, establishing appropriate farming systems, developing suitable and affordable technologies and crop varieties, augmenting credit delivery and designing region and crop-specific plans. In this backdrop, a study was conducted to document the indigenous and organic farming technologies in selected communities of the state in tribal dominant Gajapati district of Odisha intended to help the farmers to be aware of their own innovative technologies for weakening balances on the environment due to intensive use of fertilizers and agrochemicals. 

Abstract

The utilization pattern of common property water resources revealed interesting pictures in different agro climatic regions of the eastern region. The group activities for utilization of water resources in Keonjhar district of Orissa indicate that the 10 different groups of farmers have been benefited differently from the utilization of common property water resources. The group nearer to sources utilized water resources intensely to their maximum benefit. The study reveals the different benefit level for different user groups under WTCER developed water resource. It is revealed that the use of CPR revealed a highest benefit cost ratio of 3.88 against lowest benefit cost of 1.24 for different groups. A case study of use of CPR water resources under irrigation tanks for different economic activities carried out by WTCER in Ganjam, Gajapati of Orissa and South 24 Praganas of West Bengal reveals that, the relatively poor HH (having land holding <1 ha) constituting about 76% of the population under the command of the sources completely depended on the system for livelihoods and for agricultural purpose in comparison to 54% of the households having land holding more than 1 ha. In most of the systems of irrigation tanks, the dependency on common property tanks for livestock rearing was found out to be more than 90% which sometimes goes as high as 100% for poor households.

It is impossible to envision a world without energy provisions and has become inevitable and an integral part of a nation’s prosperity. It has unparallel contributions towards the socioeconomic empowerment, industrial growth, and technological advancements, as also in mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Judicious utilisation of energy sources without infringing upon the sustainable energy demand is the need of the hour. Taking India’s huge bovine strength into account, biogas technology has the potential to transform the standard of living of rural millions. Effectively implementing the Govt. of India’s National Biogas and Organic Manure Programme (NBOMP) could save precocious demand on electricity, fertiliser and firewood while promoting self-sustainable organic farming. In this chapter, the cost and benefit analyses of biogas technology (involving biogas plants of different capacities) are discussed along with the long-term approach at the grassroots level to promote digested slurry for organic farming. The commercialisation and carbon crediting of biodigester technology is also narrated. It is necessary to chalk out a revenue model to commercialise slurry at the grassroots level to economically empower the beneficiaries, from family-type to industrial-scale biogas plants. Small-scale biofertiliser hubs at district level may be organised to collect dry slurry from the beneficiaries and process them further to make it market-ready through entities operating at the national level developing manure for agricultural practices, as also feeding materials for animal husbandry practices.

In a developing country like India with exploding population pressure and shrinking availability of resources per capita, agricultural intensification maintain soil health is the only way to solve hunger and poverty. Soil is a fundamental resource base for agricultural production systems. Besides being primary medium for crop growth, soil functions to sustain crop productivity, maintain environmental quality and provide for plant, animal and human health. Soil organic matter (SOM) content is frequently identified as a primary attributes of soil quality assessment. It is evident that SOM influences various soil physical,chemical and biological properties. Besides, SOM serves as a slow release reserviour for macro-, secondary and micronutrients to plants.

Rice fallows are those land which remain uncultivated during rabi after harvesting of kharif paddy. Several reason for not taking second crops such as early withdrawal of monsoon rains leading to soil moisture stress at planting time of rabi crops, water logging and excessive moisture in the months of November and December, lack of appropriate varieties of winter crops for late planting, and socio-economic problems like stray cattle, blue bulls etc. India accounts for 11.65 million ha (79%) of the total rice fallows of South Asia. The rice fallows offer good scope for area expansion of chickpea. The residual soil moisture left in the soil after rice harvest is often sufficient to grow chickpea in low to medium land soil. It is also beneficial for chickpea where short duration paddy grown which vacate fields in September-October. In long duration paddy, chickpea could be grown under Utera cultivation (relay cropping) in the states of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa and Assam. Optimum plant population can only be ensuring in well levelled land, sufficient soil moisture and good seed under Paira (Utera) cropping.

The on-farm programme on SRI was carried out in the village Narayanpur under RLI command area in Karimpur II Block of Nadia district in the year 2016 during summer season. The soil of farmland is clay loam and situated having latitude of 23°54’26.5"Nlongitude 88°30’24.1"Eat an average elevation of 9.75 m above the mean sea level. Monsoon ceases during October and cool season sets in by November. The average rainfall of this region is about 1500 mm and normal monsoon breaks in the first week of June. Though water resources in this area are generally satisfactory and 90% of these resources are tapped form the ground water source through deep and shallow tube wells. However, due to faulty crop planning and lack of scientific water management approach, a significant portion of agricultural area is identified as gray zone from hydrological point of view. Even many tube wells are becoming dry due to over exploitation of valuable water from the lower depths of confined aquifers. Rice is predominant crop during kharif season becoming less profitable because of high input costs involved. Summer rice gave satisfactory yield but also profitable proposition because of more input cost and less farm gate prices.  

ABSTRACT
The annual accumulating organic wastes generated through milling, brewing and various other agro-industrial and agri-processing activities in India amount to about 500 MMT. Most of these contain three major structural biopolymers, viz., cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, a large proportion of which is carbohydrate and phenolic in nature. Massive accumulations of this kind of recalcitrant biomass not only deteriorate the environment, but also generate huge amount of potentially useful materials. Biological transformation has globally become increasingly popular among researchers and academicians in treating agricultural, industrial, organic and toxic wastes these days. About 60% by weight of the original pineapple fruit in forms of peeled skin, core, crown end, etc. resulting from the pineapple processing remains unutilised being discharged as waste, causing disposal and pollution owes. Of the 10% dry matter content of such waste, about 96% is organic and 4% is inorganic. Being rich in cellulose and hemicellulose, it can be a valuable resource for numerous value-added products by bioconverting it to valuable products, including bioenergy. Biomethane is one such energy resource that can be produced by valorizing pineapple wastes by employing various bioconversion technologies. This chapter focuses on the bioconverstion technologies to produce biomethane from pineapple wastes.

Present water scarcity is one of the most important world issues, and according to climate change projections, it will be more severe in future. In several parts of the world, freshwater crisis is largely due to increasing water consumption and pollution by rapidly increasing population and aspirations for economic development, but, attributed by and large to the climate change.  Climate change is considered as one of the most serious challenges confronting the present world and is expected to impact hydrological processes such as precipitation, and evapo-transpiration.  Increasing human activity and industrialization have led to a broad range of physical, chemical, and biological pollutants entering water bodies and affecting human lives. The groundwater crisis is reaching an alarming stage in many parts of the country. The indiscriminate and every now and then excessive use of groundwater has led to questions concerning its sustainability.  The sustainability of groundwater utilization must be assessed from an interdisciplinary point of view, where hydrology, ecology, geomorphology, and climatology play a very vital role. Further, water management strategies ought to be specified keeping aquifer-scales in mind. 

Abstract

The effect of watershed management programme was studied with introduction of new crop-cultivars including six rainy season crops namely direct seeded rice (drilled rice), transplanted rice, arhar, groundnut, sesamum and maize and two winter season crops namely mustard and wheat. The crop demonstration programme were undertaken for consecutive four years during 1988 to 1991 to utilize different land situations and for effective use of created irrigation potential at a drought prone tract of West Bengal (India). The results of the crop demonstration revealed that with selection of crops and its suitable varieties, adopting improved agronomic practices including scientific management of fertilizers and irrigation water, plant protection measures, the productivity of both land and crops markedly increased. The crop production strategy on the basis of land capability classification changed the land use, cropping pattern and crop intensity in the watershed area.

Abstract

Watershed development and management programme appeared to an effective and integrated approach to manage all natural resources like land, water, vegetation, animal and human for sustainable benefit and maintaining balanced eco-system. The main principle of the programme is based on starting from its planning, making design outlay, formulation of technical works, execution and development of land along with creation of water resources developing a hydrological unit at downstream making a common drainage points for the purpose of sustainable development of agriculture. The present case study dealt with the integrated water resources management with specific guidelines to the farmers for clear understanding of installing small-scale irrigation system based on their own resources in accordance with actual land situations as well as judicious use of irrigation with adoption of water-saving technology for sustainable crop production through watershed approach. The work was carried out under National Watershed Development Project for Rainfed Area (NWDPRA), one out of 21 watersheds was identified for development of rainfed agriculture with mobilization of all natural resources like soil-plant-water-animal-human to uplift socio-economic status of the farmers.

‘Women Empowerment’ has been now an important phrase of discussion for the social scientists. The concept of ‘Empowerment’ was firstly highlighted by the Political Scientists. Undoubtedly, effective utilization of human potentials and realization of knowledge about him/herself are believed to be the most critical capabilities of individuals. Probably this is the root of ‘Empowerment’. The term ‘Women Empowerment’ symbolizes women’s realization about their potentials. On the other hand, SHG approach intends to highlight towards unfolding the potentials of women through group approach, enabling them to help themselves by their own capacity. In spite of this, the condition of women SHGs is in doldrums. This might be quite difficult to generalize the whole scenario. The study is a modest endeavor to revisit women SHGs (developed by NGOs) of East Singhbhum districts of Jharkhand. Of the various factors attributed to tribal socio-economic lives of family based farmers, gender role is considered as the important factor. Tribal women in almost all walks of life are sharing responsibilities in domestic as well as economic sector.The study is based on Ex- post facto research design. The methods of data collection were quantitative and qualitative in nature and were aimed to seek answers to certain research questions. Participatory Rural Appraisal and FGD are being the dominant methods.

Aim: Perform an experiment to determine the parameters of a three-phase induction machine.

As the circuit modal of an induction motor is similar to that of a transformer, the parameter of the modal can be obtained by no-load test and blocked rotor test.

No-load test

In this test, the motor is to run at no-load at rated voltage and frequency. The applied voltage and current and power input is measured. Power input at no load (Po ) provides only the losses that are rotational losses.

Aim: Study of 3 point and 4-point starter.

Theory

A 3-point starter in simple words is a device that helps in the starting and running of a shunt field or compound excited dc motor. Now the question is why these types of dc motors requires the assistance of the starter in the f irst case. The only explanation to that is given by the presence of back emf Eb , which plays a critical role in governing the operation of the motor. The back emf, develops as the motor armature starts to rotate in presence of the magnetic field, by generating action and counters the supply voltage. This also essentially means that the back emf at the starting is zero, and develops gradually as the motor gathers speed.

The complexity of these machines and the environment in which they operate—often rugged and challenging—can lead to dangerous situations that pose a risk not only to the operator but also to those working nearby.
The safety concerns associated with tractors and power tillers stem from various factors, including the large size and weight of these machines, their powerful engines, and the high-speed operations they are capable of. The potential hazards include rollovers, being caught in moving parts, and accidents involving attachments or implements. Rollover accidents are particularly common and represent one of the most serious risks, with fatal outcomes often resulting from improper handling of the tractor, poor terrain conditions, or lack of proper safety features. In addition to mechanical risks, there are environmental factors such as visibility issues, rough terrain, and unpredictable weather conditions that further complicate the safe operation of tractors and power tillers. Introduction

The development of any region is reflected in its quantum of energy consumption. With a view to keeping the pace we have to grow our energy resources at a rate that commensurate to sustainable development. There is already shortage of electricity, reflected in power cuts notwithstanding enhancement of electricity production of several folds in the country. The problem is more severe in context with rural areas in India where some 70% of population live and have agriculture as the main occupation. Although statistically few thousand villages are yet to be electrified, the availability of regular supply in far off places has been a problem and the farmers are unable to derive benefits of electricity. The fast depleting kerosene is used for lighting and diesel oil for running agricultural machinery including pumps. In addition people burn firewood, agricultural waste and cow dung cake for cooking food causing irreparable damage to the ecosystem. According to Lester Brown there will be plenty of food to eat but no fuel to cook. The burning of cow dung deprives farmers the use of potential source of organic manure. Further, due to shortage of energy resources, farmers are unable to process the agricultural products to enable them to accrue more benefits. The situation is still worse in arid region where bio mass is scarce and there is no hydro electricity. In addition, farmers are unable to generate additional income due to lack of energy resources to run appropriate device in cottage industries. In this context, solar energy utilization has a tremendous potential for providing needful energy to the farmers for domestic, agricultural and allied applications leading to a sustainable development.

Accurate crop-yield forecasting supports food-security planning, resource allocation and farm decision-making. Yield is influenced by interacting factors such as weather, soil, irrigation, fertilizer and pesticide use, making reliable prediction challenging. This chapter presents an algorithmic framework using historical agricultural and environmental data. It covers cleaning, missing-value treatment, categorical encoding, normalization and feature extraction. Decision Tree, Gradient Boosting, AdaBoost and XGBoost regression models are evaluated individually and combined through soft voting. Performance is measured using standard prediction-error metrics. The case study demonstrates that ensemble modelling can improve accuracy and robustness, helping farmers and planners optimize inputs, anticipate production and strengthen agricultural productivity.

Abstract

The objective of the study is to build a framework of Geo-spatial Information System for effective decision making by empowering all the stake holders with spatial and non-spatial data. The Interface of this information system is developed as a deployable windows application using Map Objects in Visual Basic programming language with MS Access database. The practical utility of the proposed information system was explained with a case study in Aquaculture. This geo-spatial information system provides required information through maps based on spatial and attribute quarries. These dynamic maps help in taking effective decisions.

1.0 Introduction

Computer based information systems proved to be very efficient and effective tools for managing data and information to aid in decision making . FAO (2000) proposed agricultural knowledge and information system for rural development (AKIS/RD) to link rural people and institutions to promote mutual learning and generate , share and utilize agricultural technology , knowledge and information. This serves as vehicle for sharing ideas and principles with various stake holders addressing the problems and seeking solutions to rural development. Although the rural development planning is top-down prescriptive approach , in reality the decisions are made by the stake holders based on their perspectives, knowledge and priorities. Problems particularly related to environmental impacts are location specific and contextual. Geo-spatial technologies may serve as better vehicle to store and share all kinds of location specific data and information. The state of mapping and management of geospatial data changed during the recent years with the diffusion of modern geospatial information technologies such as GIS(Geographic information system), GPS(Global positioning system) and image analytical system for remote sensing(RS) data. Adinarayana et al., (2008) proposed a geographical information and communication technology (Geo-ICT) based information system called Grama Vikas( rural development) to assist the user in analyzing the rural information for rural development, planning . During the recent years there is a paradigm shift in GIS applications for rural development particularly in developing countries, by way of integrating top-down approach with bottom-up approach by the stake holders who stand to be affected by the decisions based on these technologies. Emerging concepts include “ community - integrated GIS”, “GIS in participatory research” and ‘participatory GIS”. (Abbot et al., 1998)

Abstract

The East Coast of Tamil Nadu exhibits a spectacular network of deltas formed by the easterly flowing river systems. The study of raw and digitally enhanced Landsat TM and IRS data shows, that these deltas were formed due to multivariate dynamic processes of fluvial, marine and aeolian actions. The wide fan shaped delta observed northwest and north of Madras city spanning out over an area of 700 sq.km is a feature, standing testimony to the PaleoCauvery river systems.

The regional slope and the overall arcuate arrangement of the crescent shaped lakes in the area and the tentacles of paleochannels show, that it is overall a fan shaped delta and its successive growth towards the sea might have been due to the constant progradation of lobes by continuous reworking of preceding lobes. The depressions in between successive concentric lobes have become the lakes. The absence of any beach ridges in such palaeo deltaic regime suggests that, it would be a sub aerial delta only. The overall arcuate shape of the shoreline in between Madras city in the south and Pulicat lake in the north is due to this fan delta. This feature once again symbolises the active river dominated delta. The Palar delta is a ‘cuspate’ one. The Ponnaiyar river has developed a linear delta, along a narrow depression found in between Tertiary uplands. While the avulsion phenomenon indicates the ancient shoreline near Villupuram, the east-west trending micro sandy uplands within the delta suggest, that it is a tide dominated delta.

8.1 Introduction

The objective of this chapter is to develop a smart control for site-specific management of fixed irrigation system with Blynk app. Mobile app is designed to control the water management in field. The complete system comprises of two sections field device and mobile app. Field device comprises of Arduino, Node MCU, Power supply, LCD, Relay board, soil moisture sensor, temperature & humidity sensor, water level sensor, motor1, motor2. The system is designed to establish control and communication with specific agricultural field to take sensory data from the sensors and control the PUMP IN motor and PUMP OUT motor with the help of mobile app. Fig.8.1 shows a block diagram for a system.

Abstract

Amongst all types of major land-use change, extending irrigated agriculture using a surface-water source has the greatest influence on groundwater – both significantly increasing recharge and changing water quality as excess irrigation water infiltrates into shallow aquifers. Hence, in order to understand the impact of the landuse on the groundwater system the study has been aimed to understand the process by adopting geophysical, geochemical and microbial analysis of groundwater samples. The study has been conducted in Chidambaram taluk, with a total area of 92.51Sq.km. A total of 39 groundwater samples were collected for the analysis of major cation and anion along with the microbial analysis, like Total Coliform, Total Viable Counts, Fecal coliforms, Vibrio cholera and Total Streptococci. The geochemical studies reveal that there is no correlation between these parameters and the microbial population. The migration of the water from the elevated regions (urban region) is witnessed and the concentration of the microbial population is higher in these regions except in the southern region which has impermeable clay and this arrest the movement of water.

Abstract

Radon being the radioactive daughter product of Uranium; the interrelationship between U and Rn has been established in the present study. It is found that Radon coexist with Uranium in the region. A total of 61 samples were collected spatially from hand pumps and bore wells of the study area. Major ions such as Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, F^-, Cl^-, HCO^3-, NO^3-, H₄SiO₄,PO₄- and SO₄^2- and U, Rn were analysed. The lithological influence of U and Radon occurrence is also highlighted. Hard rocks especially Granites are the source for both U and Rn in the study area whereas the lack of correlation exist between U and Rn in sedimentary terrain can be attributed to difference in flow conditions and chemical properties of these elements.

Abstract

Groundwater is most favored as a source of drinking water in all over world. It is often thought to be cleaner and easier to treat when compared with surface water and as a result, many wells have been sunk. Uranium and other radionuclides in water can lead to health problems if present in higher concentrations. In order to study the behavior and to understand the influence of lithology in groundwater of Madurai district, a study was conducted by collecting a total of 216 samples of different seasons (Premonsoon, South west monsoon, Northeast monsoon and Post monsoon) with respect to lithology and the number of samples was depending upon their spatial coverage in the study area. The groundwater samples were analysed for U, Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, HCO₃^-, Cl^-, SO₄^2-, PO₄^3-, NO₃^-, F^-, H₄SiO₄, pH, EC, TDS. It was identified that the higher concentration of Uranium (156 ppb) were noted in the northern part of the study area. They are chiefly restricted to the Granitic terrain and nearby Charnockitic regions. The weathering process induces the release of higher U ions from the granitic terrain and the evaporated recharge water from the tank /reservoir  also induces the release of U ions from the rock matrix, it may also be due to fertilizer enriched agricultural return flows. The key source for all these processes and hydrogeochemical processes is identified to be lithology which inturn controls all the other processes in the study area.

Abstract

Deduction of overindulgence fluoride (F)  from the water has been endeavor by numerous investigators by using different materials both natural and artificial. The objective of this paper was to attempt the fluoride removal by using the locally available natural materials such as red soil, untreated charcoal, local powdered brick, fly-ash from Neyveli (thermal power plant) and mineral serpentine were used, adopting column method. Maximum defluoridation occurs immediately after the experiment has started. The morality of fluoride removed per gram is more in red soil when compared to the other materials. Variation of fluoride removal with time was studied after the erection of the column /unit, the defluoridation setup was then connected to the public water supply from the overhead tank of 50,000L capacity. Higher F removal was noted when flow rate was lesser. An attempt on the regeneration of the fluoride adsorbed soil was also made.

Abstract

A survey of various wheat milling units (atta chakki) available around Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi was conducted to study the performance of these. The mills of various sizes (12", 16", 18", 20", 24" and 30" stone disc diameter) with horsepower ranging between 2 to 20 are in operation. Both horizontal and vertical disc types of mills are in use. The capacity of these units ranges between 10 kg/h to 200 kg/h. The stationary sieve, hand sieve, pedestal/exhaust fan are used for cleaning. The average wheat cleaning cost is Rs. 200 per ton. A small room of 8' x 10', 10' x 10' and 10' x 12' size is used for running the mills and storage of wheat grains. The grinding charges (Rs./q) of wheat, coarse grains (maize, sorghum, millet etc) and spices are 100, 200 and 1000, respectively. Sample of 500 g of wheat and flour were collected from each chakki and were analysed for wheat grain and flour quality. Infested, damaged grains were observed to be in 2-10% range. Sieve analysis of the flour was done and the average particle size, fineness modulus and uniformity index of the flour were calculated. Average particle size, fineness modulus and uniformity index were found in the range 0.1875 to 0.2023 mm, 1.052 to 1.297 and 0:1:9, respectively. Average particle size of the flour obtained from horizontal mills was found to be higher than vertical mills. Temperature of the flour at the outlet was observed in between 45 and 50°C at room temperature of 18.5°C.

Introduction

Time series analysis is a powerful tool for detecting and describing sequential processes, and it has become increasingly important in water resource management, especially in the context of global warming and climate change. Statistical methods have been widely used for analyzing climatological time series, such as precipitation, air temperature, and evapotranspiration, and hydrological time series, such as streamflow and surface water quality. However, most of the linear time series models depend on strict assumptions, such as homogeneity, trend-freeness, stationarity, non-periodicity, and lack of persistence, which are often violated in real-world datasets. Therefore, there is a need to develop new models that are more flexible and can accommodate different types of data (Machiwal & Jha, 2006).

One of the most popular and widely used classical time series models is the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model, which has linear statistical properties and can be built using the Box-Jenkins methodology (Box and Jenkins, 1970). This model adoption is important for hydrological analysis because it can help in accurately characterizing and predicting the behavior of hydrological time series data. ARIMA models can capture complex patterns and trends in the data and can be used to forecast future values of the time series. This can help in better understanding the underlying processes that drive hydrological variability, such as changes in precipitation patterns or land use. Furthermore, hydrological data often exhibit seasonality and long-term trends, which can be accounted for in ARIMA modeling. ARIMA models can also be used for anomaly detection, identifying unusual events that may have significant impacts on water resources. Overall, ARIMA modeling provides a f lexible and powerful framework for analyzing and forecasting hydrological time series, which is essential for effective water resource management in the face of changing environmental conditions.

Introduction

The study of spatiotemporal time series forecasting has gained significant attention in recent years, as it involves analyzing records of events that occur over both space and time. Spatiotemporal models group time- and location-specific discrete variables and are used in various sectors, including agriculture, transportation, meteorology, economics, disease mapping, sociology, environmental sciences, and ecology. However, the popular Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) (Box and Jenkins, 1970) model has two major flaws: it assumes linearity, which is not always the case in time series data that may exhibit nonlinear interactions, and it is a univariate model that cannot capture spatial linkages. Hence, when investigating time series data that are not perfectly linear and involve spatial correlation, the ARIMA model should not be used. Other multivariate time series models like VARMA have also been used to represent spatiotemporal data. However, VARMA models require more parameters, and the STARMA model introduced by Cliff and Ord has fewer parameters (Cliff and Ord, 1975). In previous literatures, the STARMA model was commonly used for modeling different spatiotemporal time series data (Kamarianakis, 2003). The STARMA model was previously employed to forecast the spatiotemporal data in different fields such as economics, disease mapping, climate modeling, agriculture, etc. (Pfeifer and Bodily, 1990; Lee, 2005; Rathod et al., 2018; Saha et al., 2020 and Rathod et al., 2021).

Abstract

Soil quality assessment has been recognized as an important step towards understanding the long term effects of land management practices within agricultural watersheds. Potential soil quality issues include continued high rates of erosion, losses of organic matter, reductions in soil fertility and productivity, as well as chemical and heavy metal contamination. This case study addressed the spatial variability of soil properties and its quality at the watershed level using geostatistical methods. Soil samples from the 0- to 20-cm depth were collected on a 100- by 100-m grid across an 88-ha watershed at Sakaliseripalli village in the Nalgonda District in Andhra Pradesh State, India. Geostatistical analysis showed that most of the soil parameters were moderately spatially dependent. An assessment framework, that included a minimum data set, linear scoring technique, and additive indices, was used to evaluate the soil quality index (SQI). Through principal component analysis, cation exchange capacity, exchangeable Na percentage, DTPA-extractable Zn, available P, available water, and dehydrogenase activity have been emerged as the most important indicators for evaluating soil quality. A kriged map of SQI was prepared for the watershed. The SQI was found to be higher in irrigated systems than under rainfed conditions. In the study, potential soil loss calculated using the Universal Soil Loss Equation and crop yield were identified as the quantifiable management goals; the results indicated that soils having higher soil quality indices were more productive and less erosion prone.

Bread, cloth and house (Roti, Kapra and Makan) are the basic need of human life and linked directly with agriculture because agriculture provides livelihood for nearly two-thirds of the population in India and it currently accounts for 14.2% of the GDP and also employs 55% of country’s total workforce. The sharp fluctuations in agricultural growth are mainly attributed to the vagaries of monsoon. Rainfed agriculture is spread over 55% of net cultivated area, contributing over 40% to the national agricultural production.

4.1 Introduction

Precipitation is a major component of hydrological cycle. It occurs because of condensation of water vapour molecules in the atmosphere. When the precipitation falls on the grounds, it undergoes several phases before it appears as runoff in the streams. Certain amount of precipitations is intercepted by the foliage of plants and roofs and other parts of the building and other hydraulic structures. This intercepted water is called as interception loss which is evaporated to the atmosphere. Sometimes the dried surface of the buildings and other structures soak certain amount of precipitation while falling on them which also adds to interception loss. After striking the land masses, certain amount of the precipitated water gets infiltrated into the soil surface which then moves both in lateral as well as in vertical direction. This loss is called as infiltration loss. For the study of groundwater, infiltration loss is not a loss but rather it is a gain in terms of groundwater recharge. However for a surface water hydrologist, it is a loss since it decreases the amount of runoff contributing to the stream or any other water bodies.

The increasing capabilities of Large Language Models have created strong demand for real-time AI services, but their computational complexity makes low-latency deployment difficult on conventional systems. Transformer models require substantial memory, high computational throughput and efficient data movement, creating challenges for mobile devices, embedded systems, edge platforms and latency-sensitive applications. This chapter introduces hardware–software co-design as an integrated strategy for addressing these challenges. Rather than optimizing hardware and software independently, co-design aligns model algorithms with the characteristics of processors, memory hierarchies, accelerators and communication systems. The chapter examines hardware platforms including GPUs, TPUs, FPGAs and ASICs, together with software techniques such as quantization, pruning, knowledge distillation, operator fusion and memory scheduling. Hybrid architectures are discussed for reducing latency, improving throughput, lowering energy consumption and increasing scalability. Applications in healthcare, finance, autonomous driving, robotics, industrial IoT and real-time translation illustrate the importance of efficient inference. The chapter demonstrates that coordinated optimization across the full computing stack can bridge the gap between LLM capability and practical real-time deployment while maintaining acceptable accuracy and reliability.

Materials handling encompasses a broad spectrum of activities, including mechanical harvesting on farms, transportation of live animals, refrigerated transport of perishable goods, and pneumatic conveying of flour from rail cargo to bakery storage facilities. It is important to minimize product losses during these operations while maintaining the quality of raw materials, such as preserving vitamin content and physical appearance, ensuring sanitary conditions, reducing bacterial growth, and optimizing the timing of transfers to avoid delays that could compromise both the economy and product quality. The journey of agricultural produce from farms to processing areas often results in significant transformations. For instance, grapes are transported via tractors, trucks, or trailers to juice plants or wineries, where they are graded, washed, and processed further. However, there are limitations on the size of transport vehicles and the duration fruits and vegetables can be held. Since these are living, respiring products, prolonged storage can increase batch temperatures to levels that encourage spoilage.

It is very important for every library to have all the resources/materials necessary to fulfil its target. The working of a library can be classified into two forms: dealing with the users and behind the scene. There are numerous different sections in a library divided on the basis of their functions. Most important of these is the Acquisition section. A library’s success lies in a well organized acquisition section. Main aim of the library is the contentment of the users. However, collection development is the primary task of the acquisition section which further contributes to user satisfaction itself. It performs the process of selection, procurement and accessioning of reading materials as well as maintains records. It organizes the monetary as well as human resources in such a manner that collection is facilitated more and that too in an economic and less time consuming way. All this is the responsibility of the librarian. Before acquiring the reading materials, the librarian is supposed to decide that which items are actually required in the library and which are to be rejected. A librarian must study the requirements of the library and acquire materials as per the priorities of the institution to achieve its goal.

Every practical problem need not have a documented solution. Most of the times to solve a practical problem, we need to apply our experience, creativity and experiment with the novel solutions in order to address the problem which have no readymade solution. Under such circumstance, we will apply our knowledge and experience in selecting, planning, experimenting and evaluation of the possible solutions. This type of problem solving approach involves action research.  Action research is a type of social research that aims at gaining an insight into the problem by learning from experiences gained in an effort to solve the problem. Here, action itself is a source of knowledge.

3.1 Technology assessment - A pillar of innovation commercialization
The process of transitioning an innovative technology to commercial reality requires a stringent and formal process known as technology assessment. This early stage is crucial as it determines the viability of an invention by analysing practicability of the invention as well as its uniqueness and the likelihood of it being adopted in the target markets. In the absence of this preliminary examination, the chance of technology’s potential being mismatched to the market can arise.
a) Scientific merit and technical feasibility
A key benchmark in assessing technologies involves the identification of
scientific validity and technical performance. An innovation’s viability depends on the fact that it complies with good scientific practice or the innovative application of a new paradigm that has empirically confirmable validity. It is important to determine whether the invention’s underlying mechanism can be reliably proven through established scientific practice. A working prototype allows for empirical testing in different conditions and serves as proof of practical application. In addition to that, scalability has to be tested critically. It often happens that innovations perform well in a controlled laboratory setting but lose efficiency or cost-effectiveness in the case of mass production. The viability of the implementation on a grand scale becomes a core concern in this phase of the evaluation.

CALIBRATION OF SEED DRILL
Calibration of a seed drill refers to the process of testing the seed drill to ensure it delivers the correct seed rate. Before using the seed drill in the field, calibration is essential to achieve the desired seed rate. This procedure is done to ensure that the machine delivers the predetermined seed rate accurately. The following steps are followed for the calibration of a seed drill.
Procedure for Calibration of a Seed Drill
• Determine the nominal width (W) of seed drill .

Where, M = Number of furrow openers
S = Spacing between the openers, m
• Find the length of the strip (L) having nominal width (W) necessary to cover 1/25 ha (1 /25 x 10000 m2).
L = 400/W meter
• Determine the number of revolutions (N) of the ground wheel of the seed drill
required to cover the length of the strip (L).
L = P x D x N = 400/W
N = 400/P x D x W revolutions per minute
• Jack the seed drill so that the ground wheels turn freely. Make a mark on the drive wheel and a corresponding mark at a convenient place on the body of the drill to help in counting the revolutions of the ground wheel.
• Fill the selected seed in the seed hopper. Place a container under each boot for collecting the seeds dropped from the hopper.

Abstract

Adulteration refers to a process by which the quality or the nature of the given substance is reduced by the addition of foreign or an inferior substance, removal of vital component, packing and storage under harmful conditions, insect infestation, poisonous material, undesirable chemicals and unintentional contaminants. All these change in food whether intentional or unintentional are covered under food adulteration. In cereal grains adulteration results by incidental contamination during the period of growth, harvesting, processing, transport, and distribution and results in various health hazard, sand, marble chips, earth and filth are also adulterants in grains. Pest and pesticides residues are also hazardous.

Biomedical signals provide valuable information about physiological conditions and support continuous health monitoring. This chapter introduces ECG, EEG, EMG, PPG, respiratory and blood-pressure signals and examines the challenges associated with their acquisition and interpretation. It discusses noise removal, filtering, normalization, resampling and artifact correction before presenting time-domain, frequency-domain, time–frequency, wavelet and nonlinear feature-extraction methods. Feature selection and dimensionality reduction are considered in relation to model accuracy and clinical interpretability. The chapter also explores machine learning, deep learning and hybrid approaches through applications involving arrhythmia detection, seizure prediction and wearable cardiovascular monitoring, highlighting their importance in intelligent and personalized healthcare.

6.1 INTRODUCTION

Besides simple analysis, GIS is useful to do advanced analysis like network analysis, spatial analysis, 3D analysis and modeling. Different softwares are available to perform such analysis and the above mentioned analysis is done in separate modules of the softwares.

6.2 NETWORK ANALYSIS

Network consists of well connected linear features. Roads, railway line, water distribution system, sewer line, streams are some of the examples of networks. These networks consists of nodes and arcs with designated directions and connection with other linear features. Networks are topology based with attributes for the flow of objects like traffic. Road network will be considered for explaining network analysis.

Road map is digitised with nodes and arcs. Signals, accidents are represented as points. Road is represented as line and two or more roads intersect at nodes. Attributes are added to the nodes and lines. Dynamic segmentation model is used for network analysis. It is built on lines of network. In road network analysis, attributes for travel time, one way street, two way street, right turn, impedance are added to the nodes and arcs. A link is the line running between two nodes. Link impedance is the cost of passing through the link. Travel time is different in links in cities due to varying traffic at different locations. Time taken to pass through a known length of link may give the cost but the travel time in a link is not uniform because of varying speed designated in the link as 20 km per hour and 30 km per hour. Hence it is important to consider the length of link and also the travel time. If the speed limit is 20 miles per hour for a length of 2 miles, then the travel time is 6 minutes (2/20x60 minutes). Also tuning in the network is considered. A road may have a maximum of 12 possible turns excluding U turns. There are right turn, left turn, straight way for each road. Also U turn is possible. This turning takes different time depending on the signal. Straight way takes less time but left and right turn may require some more time. If signals is available then signal time should also be taken into account. Fig 6.1 show the possible turns in a road.

Food packaging protects products from physical, chemical, biological and environmental influences while helping to maintain safety, freshness and quality. Advanced packaging systems perform functions beyond simple containment by regulating gases, moisture, temperature and microbial activity. The chapter examines modified-atmosphere, controlled-atmosphere and vacuum packaging, together with active and intelligent systems. Time-temperature indicators, freshness indicators and biosensors enable real-time monitoring of product condition. Edible and biodegradable materials provide more sustainable alternatives to conventional packaging, while nanotechnology can improve mechanical, barrier and antimicrobial performance. Shelf-life modelling and hurdle technology are also considered as tools for designing integrated packaging systems suited to specific foods and storage conditions.
