Drip system has great promise for efficient utilization of available irrigation water. In our country and elsewhere in the world the scientists are unanimously agreed to adopt drip irrigation method for higher application efficiency and thereby better use of scarce irrigation water. Saksena (1993) reported water losses of only 1-2% in drip irrigation in comparison to 6-9% in sprinkler and 30-35% in surface irrigation method. However, very small area compared to other methods of irrigation so far is irrigated by drip system in our country. Up to 2000 the total area under drip irrigation was 2,59,600 ha in India (Alam & Kumar, 2000). Initial high investment for drip network and pumping system, of course, are discouraging to the most of our farmers. Sharma & Abrol (1993) mentioned that in spite of the very encouraging results and attractive subsidies offered by the Govt. of India, the adoption of the drip irrigation system has not picked up to the expected level. Along with the other reasons they pointed out the high initial cost of the system and lack of research effort on developing cost-effective design suited to local condition are responsible for non-practice of drip irrigation at a considerable scale.

Some research works has been conducted to find out low cost method of drip irrigation. Biswas (1998) developed a manually operated drip irrigation system made of bamboo mains, laterals and sub-laterals. The system and its performance are described below.

Drip Network

The main and laterals of the drip network were made of hollow bamboo pieces each of 3m lengths with 7.5cm and 4.0cm diameter respectively. The sub lateral or the emitters were the bamboo twigs of 0.25cm inside diameter and 1.05-1.10m length to suit the spacing between the plant rows. The mains and laterals were made for the required length in the field by jointing together the sections one after another (Fig. 7.1). The ends of two sections, which contact each other, were made such that one section easily gets inside the other for about 10-15cm.

Low-temperature preservation is one of the most widely used physical approaches for extending food shelf life without seriously affecting quality. Reducing storage temperature slows microbial multiplication, enzyme activity and chemical deterioration, with inhibition increasing as temperature declines. Refrigeration maintains food above its freezing point, while freezing reduces temperature below zero and converts available water into ice. The chapter examines conventional refrigeration, advanced chilling, freezing, cryopreservation, superchilling and the influence of ice crystallisation on food quality. It explains how temperature, cooling rate and crystal size affect texture, nutritional retention and storage stability, while also addressing the limitations and quality changes associated with prolonged low-temperature storage.

INTRODUCTION

The pistons, crankshaft, camshaft, and valve mechanisms all move at high speeds within confined spaces, leading to the gradual wearing away of metal surfaces. Without proper lubrication, this friction would not only damage the engine’s components but also result in overheating and a significant reduction in the engine’s performance. The heat generated by this friction can increase the risk of engine failure, as it can lead to parts seizing or warping under high temperatures.
To combat these issues, the lubrication system is designed to reduce friction, dissipate heat, and protect the moving parts from wear. It ensures that a thin film of lubricant is constantly supplied to critical areas of the engine, forming a protective layer between metal surfaces. This helps to minimize direct contact between the moving components, thereby reducing friction and preventing unnecessary wear.
Moreover, lubrication contributes to cooling the engine by carrying heat away from the friction zones and dispersing it throughout the engine system.

i. Introduction

Machine learning is a subset of Artificial Intelligence and one of the most important part of artificial Intelligence. It is a field of Computer science which is totally differs from traditional computational approaches. In traditional approaches, a set of instruction is explicitly provided to the algorithm to solve any problem. Whereas in Machine Learning is a domain of an AI which uses a statistical analysis and can enables a system to always learn from its data without any external inputs in order to give an essential output. Due to this machine learning makes computers in advance to make model which provide decision based on input data.

Machine Learning involves a lot of algorithms which usually based on their requirements and functionalities to use where and when. To make a machine learning model we always require the data on which model can be made. Machine learning uses the algorithm which continuously learns from the data available as training data. A machine learning model is generated after the training of algorithm from the data. After the training completes, when trained model is provided with other real-life data then you can get an essential outcome. For example, in figure 3.1 Machine learning Model we use a predictive algorithm and make a model by providing it with some data, and later on we can receive prediction’s based on real data as input.

Machining is the most extensive technological procedure in the manufacturing industry. 

Algae are organisms that grow in an aquatic environment and use light and carbon dioxide (CO2) to produce biomass. There are two categories of algae: macroalgae and microalgae. Macroalgae, measured in inches, are large multicellular algae that often grow in ponds. Macroalgae refers to thousands of macroscopic and multicellular seaweed species. The term includes some species of macroalgae such as Rhodophyta (red), Phaeophyta (brown), and Chlorophyta (green). Algae species such as kelp provide important breeding habitats for fisheries and other marine species, thereby protecting food sources; Other species such as plankton algae play an essential role in carbon sequestration and produce up to 90% of the Earth’s oxygen. Macroalgae, or large seaweeds, grow very rapidly and can reach extraordinary lengths up to 60 meters (McHugh, 2003). Their growth rates are much higher compared to many land plants. For example, wild brown algae can yield between 3.3 and 11.3 kg of dry biomass per square meter each year, and cultivated varieties can produce up to 13.1 kg in just seven months. In contrast, sugarcane, which is known for its high productivity, typically produces 6.1 to 9.5 kg of fresh biomass per square meter per year (Kraan. 2010). Additionally, macroalgae are available naturally in water bodies on a seasonal basis, and farming them in the ocean does not require traditional farming land or fertilizers. This makes them a promising option for addressing energy needs, as they are not only used for food and hydrocolloid extraction but also have potential for ethanol production. Humans have a long history of growing algae for uses such as food, food additives, feed, textiles and papers, bio-plastics. In recent years, seaweed farming has become a worldwide agricultural practice, providing food and feedstock for various chemical uses such as carrageenan, animal feed, biofertilizers and growth promoters. Due to its importance in marine ecology and carbon uptake, recent attention has focused on kelp farming as a potential climate change mitigation strategy for carbon dioxide biocapture, along with other benefits, such as reduced nutrient loads and increased habitat for coastal aquatic species, and reduced local ocean acidification in addition to biofuel opportunities. The seven most commonly cultivated algal taxa are Eucheuma spp., Kappaphycus alvarezii, Gracilaria spp., Saccharina japonica, Undaria pinnatifida, Pyropia spp. and Sargassum fusiform. Eucheuma and K. alvarezii are cultivated for carrageenan (a gelling agent); Gracilaria is grown for agar; while the rest is grown for food. Effort spent in this area of farm management is more than repaid by the consistent, reliable operation of machinery, reduced fuel bills and extended life of equipment. Maintenance of farm machinery is complicated by the usage pattern of short spells of intense activity, followed by periods of non-use or storage.

During the “standing” or non-use periods chemical interactions between metals and fluids can cause more damage than normal wear and tear from active usage. This must be considered in planning machinery maintenance.

Maize (Zea mays L.) which belongs to the Poaceae family, has its roots in the American continent where it was once grown by ancient cultures like the Indians, Magyars, and Aztecs. Today, maize is one of the most widely cultivated crops globally, with the largest productions in countries such as the US, China, India, and Brazil. As a monocotyledonous and cross-pollinated annual plant, maize is an angiosperm with seeds enclosed in a fruit or shell. The root system of maize is fibrous, reaching up to 60 cm. in soil depth. Maize is a warm-season crop with specific agro climatic requirements for successful cultivation. It thrives in warm temperatures and requires a minimum temperature of around 10°C (50°F) for germination. The ideal temperature range for its growth is between 20°C and 30°C (68°F to 86°F). However, maize is sensitive to frost, and exposure to freezing temperatures can damage or kill the crop. Adequate and well-distributed rainfall is crucial during its growing season, as maize needs about 500 to 1000 mm. (20 to 40 inches) of rainfall to support its development, with higher water requirements during flowering and grain-filling stages. While the crop is moderately droughttolerant, moisture stress at critical growth stages can significantly impact yield. Maize is a sun-loving crop and requires long daylight hours with ample sunshine for efficient photosynthesis and plant growth. The soil should be well-drained, loamy or sandy, rich in organic matter, and have a pH ranging from 5.8 to 7.0 (Greaves et al., 1996). Avoiding waterlogged or compacted soils is crucial, as they can impede root development and nutrient uptake. Maize can be cultivated at varying altitudes, but its suitability is generally limited to elevations below 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) above sea level. The crop typically requires 90 to 120 days from planting to maturity, although some varieties with shorter growing seasons are available for regions with limited frost-free periods. High salinity can result in decreased plant leaves, green weight, fresh weight, shorter shoots, and root length but salt-tolerant varieties have been developed.

ABSTRACT

Malting is the process accompanied by restricted sprouting of cereals in humid atmosphere along with controlled set of conditions. It is a process of soaking, germination and drying that causes changes to the microstructure of grains. Malting causes changes in functional and nutritive value of grains. Malting results in increase in protein content, mineral availability, in vitro protein digestibility, oil absorption capacity, water absorption capacity, water solubility index and fall in level of antinutritional factors, viscosity and bulk density. The malting conditions are significantly affected by varietal difference, maturity of grains and structural composition. Therefore, optimum malting conditions should be determined for grains in order to avail the health and nutrition benefits.

In his classic book ‘The Ascent of Man’, Bronowski has written, “When I was a young man, we all thought that mastery came from man’s domination of his physical environment. Now we have learned that real mastery comes from understanding and moulding the living environment.” Our Biosphere, the living environment that supports us all, has problems and we humans are mainly responsible. We do not live ‘gently’ on the earth. The seven billion of us require air, water, food, energy, housing and amenities and we have developed the earth to provide them and have also created problems. That the problems exist are serious is the bad news. That we are recognizing them and that man has shown ability to organize and grow in ascending order from time to time is the good news.

Background and Technology Intervention

Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) describes planned storage and treatment of water in aquifers which can provide cheapest form of new safe water supply for towns and small communities (British Geological Survey, 2006). It is a part of a groundwater manager’s tool which is useful for replenishing and re-pressurising depleted aquifers, controlling saline intrusion or land subsidence as well as improving water quality through filtration and chemical and biological processes. MAR can enhance volumes of groundwater abstracted through different package of measures and restore groundwater balance. It also plays a vital role in smoothing out supply and demand fluctuations, stabilizing over-exploited groundwater levels, reducing evaporation losses and runoff, maintaining environmental flows in streams and rivers, improving water quality and augmenting the reuse of waste and storm water. In recent times, MAR uptake has been very limited.

Protected cultivation structures such as greenhouses, polyhouses, and net houses represent significant advancements in agricultural production, offering growers the ability to create an environment that is partially or fully isolated from external weather conditions. These structures are vital tools in modern horticulture and floriculture, especially in areas experiencing unpredictable weather patterns, water scarcity, and heightened pest pressures. The core objective of protected cultivation is to optimize the internal microclimate to meet plants’ physiological needs, ensuring higher yields, improved quality, and year-round cultivation. Achieving these outcomes requires a deep understanding and management of various microclimate factors, such as temperature, relative humidity, light intensity and quality, carbon dioxide (CO?) concentration, and air circulation. Each of these elements plays a crucial role in influencing plant health, photosynthetic efficiency, nutrient uptake, resistance to pests and diseases, and overall productivity.
Effective management of the microclimate begins with controlling temperature, which is arguably the most important factor affecting plant growth. While optimal temperature ranges vary by crop, even small deviations can disrupt essential physiological processes like germination, transpiration, and flowering. To maintain ideal temperatures in protected environments, growers employ a combination of passive and active strategies, such as utilizing roof and side vents for natural ventilation, applying shade nets during periods of intense sunlight, using fogging systems for evaporative cooling, and installing heaters or thermal blankets during colder months. These tools are often automated with sensors and climate controllers, making the system responsive and energy-efficient. In addition to temperature, managing relative humidity (RH) is essential.
Excessive RH can encourage the growth of fungal pathogens, while low RH can lead to water stress and hinder pollination. Maintaining RH between 50% and 70% is ideal for most vegetable and ornamental crops. This can be accomplished

Introduction

Salinity in India is a major issue affecting the sustainability of irrigated as well as non-irrigated areas particularly in the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Orissa. Salt affected soils are unproductive unless excess salts are reduced or removed. These soils occur most extensively in arid and semi-arid climates, but these soils are also found in coastal sea areas where soils are unundated by ocean or sea water. Soils are said to be saline if they contain an excess of soluble salts and sodic or alkali if they contain an excess of sodium salts. Again soils are said to be saline-sodic or saline-alkali if they contain appreciable amounts of both soluble salts and sodium. The impact of salinity manifests itself in several ways. As the salinity increases, not only does the productivity decline but sensitive crops also go out of cultivation and are replaced by salt-tolerant, low value crops and other plant species.

Abstract

Maintaining grain in good condition in storage requires careful, routine inspection and good storage practices. An integrated approach of several management tools and practice factors are necessary to manage stored grain to prevent deterioration and wastage: This includes:1) harvesting, handling, and storage equipment; 2) initial condition of the grain; 3) grain moisture content; 4) grain temperature; 5) aeration system management ; 6) insect and mold control; and 7) monitoring grain condition. An effective management program greatly enhances the likelihood of maintaining top quality grain. A well- designed and properly operated storage system with adequate aeration capacity, storing only clean grain at the proper moisture content and temperature, sanitizing the bin before loading, checking the grain condition regularly and correcting problems before they get out of hand are critical management strategies that must be implemented to prevent grain damage and possible serious economic loss.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to map the diversity of Formicoidea, richness and habitat preferences with respective to the different forest cover, classified based on the NDVI from LANDSAT TM imagery with the help of remote sensing and GIS. The study is carried out in Sirumalai hills region of Dindigul District, Tamil Nadu state, India recorded a total of 26 species with 15 genera belonging to four sub-families by a taxonomical basis. The NDVI based forest classification results that the area has disturbed dry deciduous forest (SA), undisturbed dry deciduous forest (SB), disturbed mixed deciduous forest (SC), undisturbed semi evergreen forest (SD), undisturbed grassland (SE) and undisturbed dry evergreen forest (SF) types of forest covers. The results of diversity studies, statistical analyses and field study reveals that the tropical semi evergreen forest and tropical dry evergreen forest have yielded more number of species, genera than the mixed deciduous forest and dry deciduous forest which are most disturbed by human beings in establishment of estates, management strategies by the government and land use by the local farmers.

Soil map is a map showing diversity of soil types and its properties such as pH, texture, organic matter and depth of horizons in the area of interest obtained as the end of soil survey. Generally, soil maps are used to simply identify soils and their properties, but are sometimes required for more specific purposes, such as the suitability of soils for a particular crop, suitability for irrigation, erosion risk and many other specific needs or environmental threats.

Soils fulfil many functions important for agriculture, forestry and the management of soil resources and natural hazards. The functionality of soils depends on their properties; hence, accurate and spatially highly resolved maps of basic soil properties such as texture, organic carbon content and pH for specific soil depth are needed for the sustainable management of soils. The surface soil organic carbon (SOC) concentration is a useful soil property to map soils, interpret soil properties, and guide fertilizer and agricultural chemical applications.

Traditionally farmers apply fertilizers, chemicals and other crop production inputs to optimize the production of the field as a whole. This results in application of over application of inputs and low inputs in certain locations of the field because of variation in field characteristics including soil organic carbon, soil texture, soil nutrients, field topography, and other properties. In addition, uniform applications may increase the chances of pollution of the environment due to excess application in some field area. Precision farming technology has been shown to optimize application rates if the variation of field characteristics can be used to guide the application rate of crop-production inputs. The organic carbon concentrations of surface soil have been used to spatially vary the application rate of some crop-production inputs. The surface soil organic carbon concentration affects the activity of many herbicides, influences plant-available nitrogen and also affects the soil’s ability to adsorb plant nutrients. Knowing its concentration may therefore be useful, especially if its spatial distribution could be determined accurately and for low cost.

ABSTRACT

The Mumbai region of Maharashtra has been witnessing very rapid urbanization development in terms of industrial, commercial and residential establishments. This has resulted in reclamation of tidal flats and estuarine regions. The ‘marine clay', characteristic of this environment has high swelling potential and consequently affects the performance of the structures. This will have a serious negative impact on the urbanization expansion. In this study, an attempt is made to map the spatial distribution of these expansive clays using the state of art Hyperion data. Reflectance spectra of representative samples collected from the field is used to map marine clays using Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) technique. Laboratory analyses of these foundation soils (reflectance spectroscopy, mineralogy and Atterberg limits) indicate that they have significant amount of montmorrilonite and has good swelling potential (A_C>1.4). The derived expansive clay abundance map will be of use while planning appropriate remedial measure and future development.

The ocean biological resources, their birth, growth, population and migration greatly depend as chlorophyll content, total dissolved oxygen, total suspended solids, salinity etc. These parameters which constitute the marine environment drastically change in a quick span of time owing to the dynamically changing marine forces.

Abstract

GIS in marine fisheries has taken off much later than its application in land. But the strides made in this field since 1990’s has been quite significant, as many serious mapping studies and modeling initiatives have been recorded. With the third dimension added to the 2D spatial data, the marine GIS have all the ingredients of making it a fertile domain for research for decades to come. Most of the studies and products pertaining to GIS in fishery management had been revolving around mapping of habitats, geo-referencing of catch and effort data and modeling linking oceanographic and biogeochemical factors with living resources. Satellite remotely sensed information like ocean colour can act as a surrogate to fish biomass. Further remotely sensed SST, wind and other parameters can be effectively modeled to predict fish abundance, their habitat and related aspects. This manuscript pours into the various products and outputs based on GIS in marine fisheries around the world and the Indian initiatives.

1.0 Introduction

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have been one of the most prolific scientific enhancements in recent past, which by virtue of out of box expansion of traditional database concept have opened up an entirely new vista of knowledge and opportunities. It’s probably one such unique application where information collation and analysis happen hand in hand resulting in palpable mining of data in perspective. A formal introduction to GIS would define it as a collection of computer hardware, software, data and personnel designed to collect, store, update, manipulate, analyze and display geographically referenced information. By virtue of its conceptualizations, there are no single GIS; systems can be assembled in an infinite number of ways. This is one such field, which probably always seeks the frontiers of innovations in the fields of ICT and modeling.

3.1 Introduction

The construction of a greenhouse involves the use of various materials to ensure its structural stability, longevity, light transmission, and insulation. Introduction

Flat plate collector is the heart of a solar heat collection system designed for delivery of heated fluid in the low to medium temperature range (5o70oC above ambient temperature) for applications, such as water heating, space heating, drying and similar industrial applications. The flat plate collectors absorb both beam and diffuse radiation. The absorbed radiation is converted into heat which is transferred to water or air flowing through the collector tubes or duct, respectively. Such collectors do not require tracking of the sun and little maintenance is required.

The conventional flat plate solar air heater, shown in Fig. 7.1, consists of a flat blackened absorber plate, a transparent cover (such as a glass cover) at the top and insulation at the bottom and on the sides. The air to be heated flows through the rectangular duct below the absorber plate. The glass cover transmits a major part of solar radiation incident upon it to the absorber plate where it is converted into heat. The glass is, however, opaque to longwavelength radiation and thus it does not allow the infrared radiation from the heated absorber plate to escape.

Karwa et al. (2002) have presented the following deductions of heat collection rate and pumping power equations for the flat plate solar air heater.

7.1 Introduction

This chapter describes the development of data logger of agricultural field parameter monitoring system with MATLAB. The system comprises of Arduino, water level sensor, humidity sensor, light sensor, soil moisture sensor, temperature sensor, smoke detector, power supply, PC with MATLAB. The system is designed to monitor the environment and agriculture field parameters. The field device is designed to collect all physical parameters and same is communicated serially to MATLAB with I/O package. Fig.7.1 shows block diagram of the system. Table.7.1 shows the component list required to develop the system.

Increasing crop productivity while reducing resource consumption is a central objective of modern agriculture. This chapter examines how artificial intelligence can support crop yield improvement through data-driven analysis, prediction, and decision-making. AI models can integrate information from soil, weather, crop growth, remote sensing, IoT sensors, and historical yield records to identify important factors influencing productivity. Machine learning and deep learning approaches can support yield forecasting, crop selection, fertilizer and water optimization, and precision management. The chapter also considers AI-enabled genomic selection, market intelligence, and intelligent farm management. Challenges such as data availability, implementation cost, connectivity, farmer training, and model reliability are discussed alongside future opportunities including edge AI and explainable AI.

Participation means different things to different people. They way participant is defined largely depends upon the context and back ground in which participation is applied. While the Economic Commission for Latin America (1973) considers contribution by the people to public programmes to the complete exclusion of any involvement in the decision making process as participation. Cohem and Uphoff (1977) maintain that participation tools includes the peoples involvement in the entire decision making process. Like Cohem & Uphoff, FAO (1982) emphasizes participation in all the decision making processes but by the people’s organization and through self organized action. Paul (1987) introduces the concept of enhancement of well-being in terms of values cherished by the communities as being the ultimate objective of participation.

The rate of flow of water in open channel can be determined by multiplying the cross sectional area of the flow section at right angles to the direction of flow by the average velocity of water. In area-velocity method, the water can be measured at motion. The water is measured in motion by means of rate of flow or discharge and is expressed in litre per second (lps), litre per minute (lpm), cubic metre per second (m³/s), etc. Litre per second: A continuous flow amounting to 1 litre passing through a point each second. Cubic metre per second: A flow of water equivalent to a stream of 1 m long, 1 m wide and 1 m deep flowing at a velocity of 1 metre per second. Construction of Parshall flume

Parshall flume is a water measuring device that can be used to measure water flowing in an open channel and intended primarily for use in irrigation. The flume consists of a converging inlet section, a throat section with straight parallel sides, and a diverging outlet section (Fig.61.1). The floor of the converging section is level with walls which converge in the direction of flow, towards the throat. The throat section constitutes the middle portion of the Parshall flume. The floor of the throat section is dips downward in the direction of flow, but the walls are parallel. The throat width specifies the dimensions of the parshall flume. The diverging outlet section of the flume has a floor which rises in the direction of flow. The walls become further separated in the direction of flow (diverge).The parshall flume can be constructed by G.I. sheet, aluminum sheet, M.S. sheet, brick masonry, reinforced concrete or timber. Flumes made of G.I. or aluminum sheets are easily portable. Brick masonry and concrete flumes are permanently constructed in the channels. Stilling wells should be constructed at the side to take measurements.

Orifices

An orifice is an opening in a bulk head with closed perimeter usually circular or rectangular cross-section through which water flows. For measurement of water, orifices are fabricated by making an accurate cut of proper size and shape in a mild steel sheet, aluminum plate etc. Proper machining is done to have a sharp edge through which water flows (Fig.60.1).

Free discharge

If the downstream water level is lower than the bottom of the orifice opening, the water jet discharges freely into the air and then it is said to be free discharge. The depth of water on the upstream side of the orifice that causes the flow is called the head. The orifice flow formulae can be applied only when the orifice flows fully.

a) Weirs

A weir is a notch or opening of some definite shape installed on a channel or a stream through which waterfalls (Fig.59.1). Materials like wood, concrete, mild steel, rigid PVC etc. can be used for construction of a weir. Mainly a cut on a sheet metal is used for fabrication of weirs, to be installed at various locations in a channel. Advantages of weirs are (i) capable of accurately measuring a wide range of flows (ii) easy to construct, portable and adjustable (iii) tends to provide more accurate discharge rating than flumes and orifices.

Theory

A venturimeter is a device used to measure the rate of flow of a fluid through a pipe and is often fixed permanently at different sections of the pipeline to know the discharge there. Venturimeter consists of three parts: (i) a short converging part (ii) a throat (iii) a diverging part (Fig.62.1). In the venturimeter, the fluid is accelerated through a converging cone of angle 15-20° and the pressure difference between the upstream side of the cone and the throat is measured, and provides the signal for the rate of flow. Due to the constriction there is an increase in the flow velocity and hence an increase in the kinetic energy. The fluid slows down in a cone with smaller angle (5-7°) where most of the kinetic energy is converted back to pressure energy. Because of the cone and the gradual reduction in the area there is no “vena contracta”. The flow area is at minimum at the throat.
