Introduction

A planer machine is a commercial machine tool hired for transforming the metal blocks or metal workpiece into the desired calculated shapes by generating the flat surfaces on a workpiece. Similar to a shaper machine, a planer machine is used for forming flat surfaces on the work piece using the single-point cutting tool.Planer machines are generally hired for operation on the larger workpiece or metal structure (blocks) that cannot be achieved by the shaper machine. They generally have larger beds and larger reciprocating movements covering a greater working length and surface area as compared to shaper machines.

Planning

A greenhouse, is basically the purpose of providing and maintaining a growing environment that will result in optimum production at maximum yield. The agriculture in the controlled environment is possible in all the regions irrespective of climate and weather. It is an enclosing structure for growing plants, greenhouse must admit the visible light portion of solar radiation for the plant photosynthesis and, therefore, must be transparent. At the same time, to protect the plants, a greenhouse must be ventilated or cooled during the day because of the heat load from the radiation. The structure must also be heated or insulated during cold nights. A greenhouse acts as a barrier between the plant production areas and the external or the general environment.

Site selection and orientation

A greenhouse is designed to withstand local wind, snow and crop loads for a specific cropping activity. In this way, the structure becomes location and crop specific. The building site should be as level as possible to reduce the cost of grading, and the site should be well aerated and should receive good solar radiation. Provision of a drainage system is always possible. It is also advisable to select a site with a natural windbreak. In regions where snow is expected, trees should be 30.5 m away in order to keep drifts back from the greenhouses. To prevent shadows on the crop, trees located on the east, south, or west sides should be at a distance of 2.5 times their height.

This chapter introduces plant analysis as a means of determining crop nutrient status and diagnosing nutritional deficiencies. It explains the selection of representative plant tissues at suitable stages of growth, followed by washing, drying, grinding, digestion and elemental estimation. Recommended tissues and sampling stages are provided for cereals, pulses, oilseeds, fibre crops, vegetables, ornamentals and fruit crops. Procedures are included for estimating nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, boron, zinc, iron, copper and manganese in plant samples. The chapter stresses that reliable interpretation depends on correct tissue selection, careful sampling and freedom from contamination. It thereby connects laboratory measurements with crop nutrition and fertilizer management.

An ice cream plant is a highly interconnected operation in which quality, food safety, productivity, maintenance, cost, cold-chain performance, and business results influence one another. This chapter presents plant audits as management tools rather than simple compliance exercises. It provides a structured monthly audit system covering raw materials, production, quality assurance, hygiene, maintenance, productivity, cost control, warehouse operations, cold chain, documentation, and KPI performance. Department-wise scoring enables management to compare performance, identify weaknesses, prioritize corrective actions, and track improvement. The chapter also discusses common audit mistakes and best practices. A disciplined audit system strengthens accountability, reduces losses, improves operational control, and supports continuous improvement.

6.1 Introduction

Water deficit stress is a serious and frequently encountered abiotic stress in the terrestrial surface. Its deleterious effects on plant growth and productivity are well documented. Plant responses to water stress are believed to be complex as these operate at various levels of plant organization. Several in built physiological and biochemical mechanisms provide resistance to plants against stress. An understanding of the processes linked to these mechanisms is vital for optimizing crop growth and productivity under stress. Plants respond and adapt to water stress by altering cellular metabolism, thus invoking stress tolerance. Alteration in endogenous concentrations of growth regulators along with accumulation of osmolytes, modifications in antioxidant cascade, changes in protein profiles and induction of gene expression in plants under stress are important characteristic metabolic changes that invoke stress tolerance at the cellular level. Alteration in endogenous concentrations of plant bio-regulators under stress helps plants through better turgor maintenance and efficient water usage by influencing stomatal functioning, hydraulic conductivity and morphological adaptation. Progress made in plant adaptation to water stress is an outcome of advances made in analytical techniques on endogenous growth regulator analysis and powerful and reliable molecular and genetic techniques.

Abstract

The establishment of All-India Coordinated Wheat Improvement Project in 1965 coincided with the introduction of high yielding semi-dwarf wheat varieties. Since then India has made very impressive progress in increasing wheat production over the past three and half decades. India now ranks as the second largest wheat-producing nation in the world. In fact from a state of “Ship to mouth” in 30 years or so India has become a nation of surpluses. The significant contribution made by the project in helping the increased wheat production cannot be ignored. Through coordinated research and development, nearly 200 wheat varieties have been developed during the last 35 years in India. However, only a small number of them produced without backing of specific quality breeding programs excel in quality traits also. The increasing demand of baked and pasta products in the country along with economic liberalization and global trade have offered opportunities for better utilization of the surplus wheat. Thus, in the current decade and beyond, wheat quality needs uppermost attention to meet the trade requirements for domestic and export purposes. Therefore, there is a need to reorient the wheat improvement programs in the country.

Methods for plant diseases control were first classified by Whetzel (1929) into exclusion, eradication, protection and immunization.

Two more principles - avoidance and therapy were created (NAS, 1968).

4.1. Physical methods

Employed for reduction or elimination of primary inoculums that may be present in seed, soil or planting material.

6.1. Fungicides

Fungicide originated from two latin words viz., fungus and caedo.

Word caedo means to kill.

Fungicide is a chemical agent which has the ability to reduce or prevent the damage caused to plants and their products.

Physical agents like ultra violet light and heat should also be considered as fungicides.

Antisporulant and fungistatic compounds do not kill the fungi, they are included under the broad term fungicide

9.1. Plant quarantine

Legal restriction of movement of plant materials between countries and between states within the country to prevent or limit introduction and spread of pests and diseases in areas where they do not exist.

Plant quarantine regulatory measures are operative through the Destructive Insects & Pests Act, 1914 (Act 2 of 1914) in the country.

The productivity of a crop is result of genetic make-up (heredity) and environment (climate) and their interaction. The components of crop environment or climate or microclimate are light, temperature, air compositions and the nature growing medium or soil. In open fields, only manipulation of nature of the soil or root medium by tillage, irrigation and fertilizer application is possible. Under greenhouse structure control of any one or more of the components of the micro climate is manipulated.

Light

The visible light of the solar radiation is a source of energy for plants. Light energy, carbon dioxide (Co2) and water all enter in to the process of photosynthesis through which carbohydrates are formed. The production of carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water in the presence of chlorophyll, using light energy is responsible for plant growth and reproduction. The rate of photosynthesis is governed by available fertilizer elements, water, carbon dioxide, light and temperature. The photosynthesis reaction can be represented as follows

Abstract

The recent earth movements and the related seismicities in the Southern part of the Indian Peninsula has been a matter of enigma for a century and more. While one school was strongly holding the opinion that the southern Indian Peninsula is free from recent earth movements as it is a shield area, the other school has narrated the possibilities for the ongoing earth movements. Under these circumstances, the various anomalies observed from satellite data and ground based information on geomorphology, subsurface lithology, geophysics, hydrogeology, geochemistry etc. have suggested a possible Pleistocene / Holocene graben along Pondicherry in the northeast and Cumbum Valley in the southwest in the southern tip of the Indian Peninsula.

Abstract

The tectonics of the geological past from Archaeozoic to early part of Cenozoic era has been studied due to their penetrative documentation in the form of folds and faults. But the tectonic history of the latter part of the Cenozoic era (i.e Pleistocene period) has remained a matter of conjecture owing to the poor response of the rocks to Pleistocene movements. In the present study the authors presented a model for the Pleistocene earth movements of South India through the study of river migration, coast line changes and lineament fabric derived from the space borne photographs.

In the area of study, the northerly migration of Paleru and Pennar and southerly shift of Palar, Ponnaiyar and Cauvery rivers, marine regressions restricted within this segment and the closely spaced crest line fractures suggest a lineament controlled E-W trending Quaternary upwarping along Mangalore-Madras alignment. Similar E-W cymatogeny is inferred in the southern tip of the Peninsular India on the basis of once again such observations. Such E-W trending Pleistocene arching phenomenon suggests a N-S oriented regional compression which could be related to the collision of Indian plate with Tibetan plate.

11.1 Intellectual property policy
An IP policy is a formal document that provides guidelines for managing IP by an organisation. A strong IP policy build trust by ensuring efficiency and transparency. Other benefits of IP policy includes creation of environment to encourage innovation and commercialisation of IP. It also lays foundation to set out the rules for public-private partnerships while addressing issues among various stakeholders and ensures compliance. IP Policy is not law, but a proposed course of action.

7.1. Introduction

The integrated farming system (IFS) is becoming increasingly important for effective farm resource management in order to increase farm productivity, reduce environmental degradation, improve the quality of life for resource-poor farmers, and ensure sustainability. Integration happens when one production sub-system's outputs (typically by-products) are used as inputs in another within the farm unit (Radhammani et al., 2003; Lightfoot and Minnick, 1991). IFS are a mixed farming system made up of at least two distinct but logically linked components of crop and animal enterprises. The integrated farming system is effective in reducing risk, increasing productivity and revenues, and improving the use of organic waste and agricultural leftovers.

Abstract

High moisture paddy can be dried in a trolley drier at farm level/grain market to reduce losses during various post harvest operations. During last two paddy harvesting seasons quality analysis of eight, most popular varieties of fresh paddy arrivals from about 40 grain markets, scattered all over Punjab, was performed. Monitoring of paddy in grain markets showed that maximum number of samples (62.7%) was in the range of 12-18%, moisture content (w.b.). Over-dried paddy samples (<12% m.c., w.b.) were only 9.1%. The samples with more than 18% m.c ,w.b. (high moisture paddy) were 28.2%, which have to be dried to safe moisture levels. Milling characteristics of the analyzed samples indicated that the broken percentage was highest (25.5%) in PR-113 followed by PR-111 (20.6%) and minimum in Pusa-44 (12%). The highest insect- pest infestation (Sitotroga cerealella (olivier) was observed in PR-108, followed by PR-116, PR-113, PR-111, Lal Mundi, Govinda, PR-114 and Sharbati. The Mycoflora isolated and identified were Aspergillus, Penicillium, Mucor, Rhizopus, Alternaria, Curvularia, Helminthosporium and Cladosporium spp. Maximum fungal infestation were associated with samples of PR-108 variety. To avoid further proliferation of mycoflora and inset pests, paddy should be dried to safe moisture levels for further storage and processing. For this, a trolley drier has been developed by converting a conventional farmer’s tractor trolley, into a portable drier, which can reduce 5% moisture of 1 tonne batch of paddy in about 100 minutes, consuming 56 kWh of electrical energy

Introduction

The post-harvest and marketing system comprised of a series of interconnected activities which starts after the harvesting process and continues until the distribution of food products to the consumers. An effective post-harvest system makes sure that the food product reaches the customer in a short time without sacrificing volume, quality, and safety of the food product (Gardas et al., 2018). Increasing population growth in the last few centuries and the requirements from industrialization forces the need for sustainable food production and better food processing technologies. There is a requirement of balance between sustainable food production practices, a healthy environment, and a healthy population due to the rapid changes in the climate and population. According to the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), there will be a requirement of a 70% increase in food production in 2050 due to the growing population across the world (FAO, 2017).

The challenges such as improper land use, decrease in biodiversity, aquatic eutrophication by over-fertilization, global warming, water shortages due to improper irrigation etc. imposed awareness among the stakeholders to bring more efficient approaches in agricultural and food production practices. This brings the idea of terms such as recyclable and eco-friendly packaging, buy local, whole foods, free-from, and fair-trade (Boye and Arcand, 2013). Recent trends in climate and changes in the environment may pose challenges to achieve the required food production in the future. In addition to the steps taken for increasing food production, the steps to reduce food loss are important. In 2011, it was calculated that 11.3 billion tonnes of food was wasted in a year, which is almost one- third of the total food production (FAO, 2011).

11.1 Introduction

Horticultural crops are grown by farmers with the aim of generating profit. For a business to prosper, it is crucial that its products are delivered to customers who are satisfied with their quality and value, and who will continue to purchase them. Therefore, growers must continually meet consumers’ demand for fresh greenhouse-grown items by utilizing all available technology and expertise in producing, harvesting, packaging, storing, transporting, and marketing their goods. The needs of the consumer should drive production.

23.1. What?

Post harvest and agro-processing refers to activities carried out after harvesting a crop. These include milling, grading, processing and packing of the produce before it reaches the end users. This is also referred to as value addition, as it increases the marketable quality of the harvested produce.

23.2. Milling

It is the process of separating edible portion of the grain after removal of the husk or seed coat. This converts the products into a form that can be readily used for cooking, e.g. rice milling and dal milling.

23.3. Grading

Grading is the process of segregating the harvested produce based on the physical appearance including size and colour. Grading increases the market value of the crop.

Abstract

Quality of water is a matter of serious concern for arid and semi arid region like Rajasthan. The study area chosen is extreme western arid part of Rajasthan state where water quality and quantity both are very important issues. Due to absence of any perennial river, scanty rainfall and scarcity of surface water resources, ground water is very deep and saline. The groundwater potability assessment was based on 1119 wells water quality data. The purposes of this investigation were (1) to provide an overview of present groundwater quality and (2) to determine spatial distribution of groundwater quality parameters which affect water potability and (3) to map groundwater potability in the study area by using GIS and Geostatistics techniques. Arc GIS 9.3 and Arc GIS Geostatistical Analyst were used for generation of various thematic maps and Arc GIS Spatial Analyst to produce the final groundwater potability map.

Potassium is an important plant nutrient that influences water relations, carbohydrate and nitrogen metabolism, crop quality and resistance to environmental stresses. This chapter examines potassium behaviour and management in irrigated soils. It begins with the functions of potassium and explains the different forms in which potassium occurs in soil, including relatively unavailable, slowly available and readily available forms. Potassium fixation and release are discussed in relation to soil colloids, temperature, drying, soil pH and aeration. These processes determine the amount of potassium available for plant uptake and are particularly important in intensively cultivated irrigated soils. The chapter also considers luxury consumption and interactions between potassium and other elements. Potassium management is discussed through appropriate rates and methods of application and selection of suitable potassic fertilizers. The effects of potassium nutrition on plant behaviour, water utilization, carbohydrate and nitrogen metabolism, crop quality, disease resistance and low-temperature injury are highlighted. At the heart of this endeavor lies the concept of crop production, a complex interplay of genetic potential, environmental factors, and human management. This chapter, Potential and Achievable Crop Production, delves into the crucial distinction between what a crop can produce under ideal circumstances and what it actually produces in the farmer‘s field. Understanding this dichotomy is paramount for addressing global food security challenges, optimizing resource utilization, and developing sustainable agricultural practices. We will begin by exploring the theoretical maximum yield, often termed "potential production," which represents the inherent capacity of a crop variety to produce biomass and yield when all limiting factors are eliminated. This potential is primarily dictated by a crop‘s genetic makeup and the prevailing climatic conditions, such as solar radiation, temperature, and carbon dioxide concentration. Subsequently, we will shift our focus to achievable production, the real-world yield obtained by farmers. This actual yield invariably falls short of the potential due to a myriad of biotic (pests, diseases, weeds), abiotic (water scarcity, nutrient deficiencies, extreme temperatures, poor soil health), and socio-economic (lack of access to inputs, knowledge, or markets) constraints. The disparity between potential and achievable yield, known as the "yield gap," represents a significant opportunity for enhancing agricultural output without necessarily expanding cultivated land. By meticulously examining the factors that contribute to this gap, we can identify targeted interventions and innovative strategies to bridge it, thereby moving closer to realizing the full productive capacity of our agricultural systems. This chapter will therefore provide a comprehensive framework for understanding the science behind crop yields and the practical approaches required to optimize them for a more food-secure future.

Introduction 
It is commonly acknowledged that the swift rise in urbanization and population expansion is the primary reason for the increasing consumption of fossil fuels, which ultimately results in the exhaustion of fuels generated from petroleum. Globally, the scarcity of fossil fuels poses a significant challenge. Furthermore, there are significant worries about the negative impacts of the heavy reliance on petroleum-based fuels on the economy, energy and the environment conservation. Consequently, extensive research has been dedicated to identifying alternative sources that can mitigate the dependence on fossil fuels [1]. Biofuels have garnered worldwide attention as a potential substitute for fossil fuel-derived fuels, given their distinctive qualities [2]. Utilizing a variety of plant sources, including sugarcane, corn, soybeans, vegetables, palm oil, and Jatropha (often used in Africa), biofuel production is progressing on almost every continent. Bioethanol is successfully used as a biodiesel in addition to gasoline for otto-cycle engines in nations like the USA and Brazil [3]. Conversely, biodiesel represents a significant category of biofuel capable of partially or fully replacing diesel obtained from fossil fuels. Biodiesel is made via a process called trans-esterification that uses renewable biolipids [4]. Biodiesel can be produced from oil that comes from nonedible agricultural seeds or kernels [5]. Furthermore, edible oils from plants such as sunflower, palm, and soybean are used as feedstocks to produce biodiesel [6]. In the field of biofuel research, nanotechnology and nanomaterials have proven to be useful instruments for improving output quality at a reasonable cost. Algae stands out prominently in discussions about biofuel production due to concerns related to food resources. Types of biofuels and their sources are represented in the (Fig.1). The use of crops and plants yielding food is considered unsuitable for prioritizing biofuel production due to potential disruptions in food supply. Notably, various algal species vary in their production capacity. The utilization of nanoparticles (NPs) is advantageous in biofuel synthesis due to their unique characteristics, including a substantial surface area to volume ratio, adsorption capacity, high crystallinity, and stability. This distinguishes them from competing sources as better possibilities [7]. In the process of creating biofuels, metal oxide nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes are widely used as nano-catalysts because of their extra characteristics that allow for their high potential recovery [8]. The overall procedure for producing biodiesel on a small scale and for experimental purposes using algae are shown in the (Fig.2).

The overuse of fossil fuels is expanding simultaneously with society’s rapid development, which culminates in a decrease in fossil energy and a very serious deterioration of the environment. The purpose is to make the carbon neutral as fast as possible, which will make the invention of alternative energy sources to replace the fossil fuels. To make world a better place to live, fossil energy is highly needed to be conserved and measures should be made to limit the use of fossil energy. After many researches, the alternate to fossil energy has been made in the form of “BIODIESEL”. Biodiesel, which is produced from renewable resources such as vegetable oil is a new clean alternative to fossil fuel. Biodiesel in the new era of scientific field is mainly produced from Microalgae. Production of biodiesel from microalgae ensures reusing carbon resources from nature. This method contributes to achieve in replacing petroleum use and also helps in reducing pollution in the environment. Biodiesel consist primarily of esters which is formed by methanol or by ethanol and long chains of fatty acids which may be saturated or unsaturated such as palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid and linoleic acid. This is the main and ultimate reason why production and use of biodiesel is attracted the attention of researches worldwide. The biodiesel is developed in three generations that is First, Second and Third generation Microalgae are single-celled organisms which are microscopic. They are an essential component of carbon cycle and they can exploit carbon sources in water and soil efficiently and have plenty of advantages over the other biodiesel sources that are conventional oil crops such as wheat, palm, corns, soybeans, maize and rapeseed. In this century, one of the most important environmental issues is global warming, that is caused by released of greenhouse gases. These microalgae have high rates of biomass production and can survive in a variety of circumstances, such as freshwater, saltwater, and wastewater (Muhammad Abdullah et.al 2024) Their ability to be grown on non-arable ground and their lack of resources competition with food crops are two of their most significant and crucial advantages. The process of producing biodiesel from the microalgae involves many stages. The stepwise structure involves lipid extraction, microalgae cell disruption, harvesting, culture and transesterification. Microalgae re a promising source of biodiesel as they have a high lipid content and can grow quickly. But they are complex in composition and they require a specialized harvesting system. Nanoparticles are an ultrafine unit and have dimensions which are stated in nanometers. These nanoparticles can be detected in the natural environment and can also be generated by human activity. Because of their sub-microscopic size, they boast unique material properties and may be used in many different kinds of fields, namely environmental remediation, engineering and medical care. In 2008, International Organization for Standardization (ISO) defined this nanoparticle as a discrete nano-object in which all the Cartesian dimensions are less than 100nm. 2.1. Breeds of poultry

INTRODUCTION
A PTO (Power Take Off) in a tractor transfers mechanical power from the engine to various tractor implements or attachments, such as a rotavator, thresher, straw reaper, or super seeder, through a PTO shaft. In India, the PTO is typically located at the rear of the tractor, while in several other countries, a front PTO is also available to power front-mounted machines. Different PTO-driven implements require varying amounts of PTO horsepower (HP) for operation. PTO horsepower indicates the power available for driving tractor attachments, and it is transmitted to these implements via the PTO shaft.
The rear-mounted power outlet, known as the PTO, is used to operate PTOdriven implements like a rotavator, power harrow, and baler. Tractors are used not only for towing implements for tillage and sowing but also for stationary tasks such as crop threshing and water pumping from tube wells, which are powered by the PTO. The PTO-driven implements require a specific amount of horsepower, referred to as PTO HP, to function. This PTO HP is the portion of the engine power used to operate the implements, and it is always lower than the tractor’s total horsepower due to friction losses. Additionally, the PTO shaft derives its power from the gearbox.
There are two standard PTO speeds: 540 rpm and 1000 rpm. This standardization was introduced to ensure that implements are designed to operate efficiently at these speeds. For splines, the 540 rpm shaft has 6 splines, while the 1000 rpm shaft features 21 splines.
THE INVENTION OF PTO IN THE TRACTOR INDUSTRY
In 1918, the International Harvester Company (IHC) introduced the Power Take Off (PTO) in tractors, with Edward A. Johnston, an IHC engineer, being the first to develop the concept after being inspired by homemade PTO systems in France. The 8-16 model became the first commercial tractor to feature PTO. Two

10.8.1. Function

A power take-off (PTO) is a splined drive shaft on a tractor that can be used to provide power to an attachment or a stand alone machine. PTO shaft gets the drive from hydraulic pump shaft. This in turn gets drive from engine. PTO is designed to be easily connected and disconnected (Fig 10.8.1.). It is used to operate implements, viz., rotavator, fertilizer spreader, duster and many more machines which are stationary such as threshers, water pump and portable flour mill. These shafts either run at 540 rpm with 6 splines in the shaft or at 1000 rpm with 21 splines in the shaft. But many old tractors have 540 rpm PTO. The present day equipment is designed to operate with 1000 rpm PTO shaft. The manufacturers of old tractor models provide an auxiliary gear box which increases the speed of PTO to 1000 rpm. INTRODUCTION
Transmission is a mechanism designed to reduce speed, consisting of multiple gears. It functions as a series of gears and shafts that transmit engine power to the tractor wheels. This system includes various components that enable both forward and reverse movement of the tractor, adapting to different field conditions. The entire route through which power flows from the engine to the wheels is referred to as the power train.
FUNCTIONS OF THE POWER TRANSMISSION SYSTEM
1. To transfer power from the engine to the tractor’s rear wheels.
2. To provide reduced speeds to the rear wheels as required.
3. To adjust the ratio between wheel speed and engine speed to match varying field conditions.
4. To facilitate power transmission through a right-angle drive, as the crankshaft and rear axle are typically positioned at right angles to each other.
The power transmission system is composed of several components: clutch, transmission gears, differential, final drive, rear axle, and rear wheels. Together, these components ensure the effective transmission of power.

2.0 Manning's Rugosity Coefficient (n)

Value of N depends upon a number of factors such as , surface roughness, vegetation, obstructions, type of lining, age of lining, erosion and damages in lining, curves, discharging capacity , perimeters, depth of flow, velocity etc. These are discussed below and commonly adopted values of n are given in tables 2.1 to 2.3.

Pre-training and fine-tuning constitute two fundamental stages in the development of modern Large Language Models. This chapter provides a comprehensive examination of how LLMs acquire general language capabilities through large-scale pre-training and subsequently adapt those capabilities to specific tasks through fine-tuning. Pre-training uses extensive unlabeled datasets and self-supervised learning objectives to develop representations of language, context and knowledge. The chapter discusses Transformer-based architectures, data preparation, cleaning, tokenization and the importance of high-quality training corpora. It then examines fine-tuning approaches including Supervised Fine-Tuning, Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback, Parameter-Efficient Fine-Tuning, LoRA, QLoRA, adapter tuning and soft prompting. 1. Introduction 
The growing demand for fossil fuels around the world and their extensive use, which degrades the environment, have been serious issues. More precisely, it is predicted that global energy consumption will rise by 49% between 2007 and 2035 due to social pressure, population growth, and economic expansion (Cheah et al., 2016; Prasad et al., 2016). In order to replace fossil fuels, alternative energy resources must be developed, according to energy security and environmental sustainability. The most promising bio-fuel among the alternatives to gasoline is bio-ethanol, which can be used as the only fuel in compatible automobile engines or blended with gasoline up to 30% without requiring engine changes (Safarian and Unnthorsson, 2018). Bio-ethanol has a higher-octane number, which enables engines to run at high compression ratios, and a high oxygen content, which improves combustion efficiency (Branco et al., 2019). Grain, sugar beets, corn, and sugarcane could all be used to make bio-ethanol. Together, Brazil and the United States account for over 90% of the world’s bio-ethanol production, with 59% and 27% coming from each country, respectively (Branco et al., 2019).The Policy Energy Act and Energy Independence and Security Act, which aim to consume 136 billion gallons of bio-ethanol by 2022, are the main drivers of the USA’s remarkably high production rate (Menon and Rao, 2012; Tran et al., 2019). Unfortunately, the world’s food security is now in jeopardy due to the manufacture of bio-ethanol from the aforementioned edible energy crops. For the synthesis of bio-ethanol, lignocellulosic biomass-such as agricultural residues, forest woody residues, micro-algae, and even municipal solid waste is consequently a more advantageous source. Cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin make up the lignocellulosic complex structure. While hemicellulose is in charge of binding and 88 | Biofuels Production Using Sustainable Bioprocessing Technologies lignin guarantees the toughness of the entire stricture, cellulose, a polymer made of glucose, gives plants structural support (Kumar et al., 2016; Prasad et al., 2016). According to Tran et al. (2019), pre-treatment is a crucial step in order to: (i) increase the amorphous area to facilitate hydrolysis; (ii) improve the porosity of the porous matrix to facilitate enzymatic and chemical hydrolysis; and (iii) separate cellulose from lignin and hemicellulose. The majority of the most successful pre-treatment techniques now in use are physio-chemical and chemical techniques, which also produce harmful compounds such furfural (Liyamen and Ricke, 2012). Other techniques are also used, each with advantages and disadvantages. For example, biological pre-treatment is environmentally benign but does not generate large amounts of material. Compared to the thermochemical approach, the biochemical conversion process performed better and was more ecologically friendly (Mu et al., 2010; Liyamen and Ricke, 2012; Kumar et al., 2019). It should be mentioned that the pre-treatment cost should also include the expense of detoxifying harmful inhibitors, which are created as a result of the pre-treatment technique (Liyamen and Ricke, 2012). All things considered, a successful pre-treatment ought to be both financially and environmentally responsible. It’s also critical to make sure that other advantageous aspect like maximum energy savings, waste and wastewater recycling, material recovery, and the use of a biorefinery method are taken into account throughout the lignocellulosic bioethanol production process (Kumar et al., 2019). Precipitation indices convert rainfall data into standardized measures of wetness, dryness, intensity and duration. They allow climatic conditions to be compared across locations and time scales despite differences in normal rainfall. This chapter introduces major indices such as the Standardized Precipitation Index, Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index, Percent of Normal and percentile-based measures. It discusses data requirements, calculation, interpretation, strengths and limitations. These indices support meteorological, agricultural and hydrological drought assessment, wet-spell analysis, crop planning and water-resource management. By identifying the severity and persistence of rainfall deficits or surpluses, precipitation indices strengthen early warning, drought preparedness and climate-risk management in agriculture.

2.1 Introduction

Precipitation is the general term for all forms of moisture emanating from clouds and then ultimately falling on the land surface. It is the total supply of water derived from the atmosphere in the forms of rain, snow, hail, mist, dew, sleet, fog etc. The liquid form of precipitation is called as rainfall whereas the frozen forms of precipitations are snow, hail and sleet. Of all the different forms of precipitation, rain and snow are the two dominant factors that contribute maximum amount of water. In Indian condition, rainfall is the most important form of precipitation that contributes the highest amount of water causing stream flow. Unless otherwise stated, the term rainfall will be used in this book synonymously with precipitation. It is the primary input vector of the hydrologic cycle. Generally it is expressed as the depth water on a horizontal surface over any specified time interval. If the specified time interval is day, then the amount of precipitation is called as daily precipitation. Similarly, the precipitation being contributed over time interval of a month, season and year is termed as monthly, seasonal or annual precipitation. Its form and quantity are influenced by the action of different climatic factors such as wind, temperature and atmospheric pressure. The study of precipitation forms a major portion of the subject of the hydrometeorology.

Precipitation is water in liquid or solid forms, falling on to the earth. In other words, precipitation is the deposition of atmospheric moisture on earth. Formation of clouds does not mean precipitation. Precipitation involves condensation, growth of hygroscopic nuclei, cooling of nuclei at different stages and their fall on to the earth’s surface. There may be several clouds but no precipitation. If the cloud particles are too small and remain suspended in the sky, they may not fall on the earth. Under certain conditions, water particles formed tend to fall but do not reach the surface since they get evaporated on the way. Only when the cloud droplets or ice crystals grow to certain size and can no more remain floating due to buoyancy of air, do they fall as precipitation.

Precipitation is the major source of water to all the living organisms on the earth. All the water sources on the earth depend on precipitation only.

Forms of precipitation

Precipitation form is the state that the moisture is in, i.e., liquid, freezing, or frozen (solid). Different forms of precipitation may occur together, such as mixed rain and snow; but such an occurrence is simply a mixture of forms, not a separate form of precipitation. Because atmospheric conditions vary greatly both geographically and seasonally, several different forms of precipitation are possible. All forms of precipitation are collectively termed hydrometeors. Hydrometeors have been classified into 50 specific types. Out of these precipitation forms, only rain (liquid form) and snow (solid form) make significant contribution to total precipitation. In many parts of the world, the term rainfall is used interchangeably with precipitation.

The major source of water supply on the earth is precipitation. The water received at the earth’s surface from the atmosphere either in solid or liquid form is called precipitation. The water received in solid form may be snow or hail. The precipitation is seasonal in character in many parts of the world. The precipitation may occur due to –
• Conventional physical process
• Orographic effect and
• Convergence of air masses
3.1. Conventional Physical Process
It occurs when the air on the surface of the earth and few metres above the surface of the earth is heated by absorbing long wave radiation emitted by the earth’s surface. As the air is heated, it becomes lighter. The water vapour formed due to evaporation from the soil surface or water bodies will mix with the air and the air will be moist. When the moist air gets heated it becomes lighter and rises vertically upwards. After reaching certain height, the air gets cooled enough to get saturated with water vapour. The moisture in the saturated air will condense on small solid particles to form tiny drops. These solid particles may be dust or smoke or solid particles suspended in the atmosphere and are called aerosols.

Abstract

The social and economic development of any state is interlaced with the manner of its natural resource management. The unplanned use and overexploitation of resources are results in various kinds of land degradation, biomass deterioration and siltation of tanks. In addition, the low per capita availability of land, erratic and uneven distribution of rains, undulating topography, improper management, traditional cropping programmes and recurrence of droughts having cumulative effect leading to low productivity and high risk particularly in dryland farming. Further, developing dry land agriculture through sectoral approach did not bring in the desired results, as the efforts were not integrated. However, in nature all the resources are inter-linked and thus, the integrated developmental approach is the best solution for optimal development of any area. Further, development based on administrative units such as district, taluk, block and village have resulted in imbalance and sometimes, no overall development in some areas. Considering this, natural resources management through Geo- informatics tools like, remote sensing, GIS, GPS and other sensor based techniques are the possible ways for making agriculture sustainable. The paper mainly highlights theimportance of application of latest technologies in agriculture along with some field level case studies.

Precision agriculture is yet to be popularized for taking its enormous advantages. In laser land levelling and micro irrigation/ fertigation it must have made its prominence but others it is with research institutes where research is focussed on the spatial variability of production environments, development of efficient and suitable data management systems, efficiency of various types of image analyses and optical sensing, efficiency of sensors and related technologies, designs of precision agriculture equipment, optimal inputs and service uses, and their spatial allocations, potentials of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), nanotechnologies and several others.The adoptions of precision-agriculture technologies have, so far, mostly been limited to parts of developed countries. Major contributions to the profitability of precision agriculture is reduced costs of plant protection inputs and higher output revenues.
