The study and utilization of biomass for energy, composting, or other valueadded applications require accurate information about its properties. This begins with a scientifically sound process of sample collection, preparation, and analysis. Each step ensures that the data derived from biomass materials is representative, reliable, and applicable for research, industrial application, or environmental assessment.
Sample Collection
Biomass sampling methods vary depending on the biomass type and the analysis objective. For instance, truck-top sampling is used for biomass pellets, while quadrats are employed to gather cover crop biomass from fields. Regardless of the technique, the primary aim is to collect a representative sample that accurately reflects the overall characteristics of the biomass.
Purpose
The goal is to obtain a sample that accurately represents the average composition and properties of the entire biomass batch.

Physical Properties of Seed – bed / Puddled Soil

Tillage is the process of getting the soil ready for planting and maintaining it loose and weed-free while the crop is growing.  The main goal and core function of tillage are broken down into three phases:

1. Creating a suitable seedbed,
2.  Eliminating weed competition, and
3.  Enhancing the physical quality of the soil.

Sampling is the process of drawing a part of population supposed to be the representative of that population.

Types: Sampling process can be either random or non-random. Most frequently we use random sampling method in our studies. But sometimes the purpose of the study demands for non-random sampling in one or other phase of sampling (Example: When we want to study the impact of life skills development programme on the disabled female beneficiaries)

Mention about the Great Himalayan river of Vedic Period (10000-8000 BC) is found in ancient Indian literature. The river called as ‘Saraswati’ in India and ‘Hakra’ in Pakistan, was flowing with full majesty through Thar Desert around 6000 BC and dried up during 3000 BC due to climatic and tectonic changes in Himalayan region. The relict of this lost river is still found as palaeochannels in this region. Large numbers of archaeological sites of Harappan civilization occur along the dry river bed. 

Abstract

This paper sets out to describe key results and experiences obtained during the assessment of the crop response to water which varies strongly from crop to crop depending on its specific genetic characteristics and adaptation to ecological conditions. The specific crop water information for the different crops is compiled in a crop-based data base. This includes crop water parameters, yield response to water, as well as selection of economy crops. Existing natural water resources can sustain the crop production with high yield as well as economic value with minimal environment impact. Most of the crop varieties get all of its required water from rainfall- water but due to climate change there is always a demand of irrigation water from the ground water resources. Thus, there is a need to evaluate the crop water information in relation to ground water extraction as a source of irrigation.

Digital image processing is the use of computer algorithms to perform image processing on digital images. As a subcategory or field of digital signal processing, digital image processing has many advantages over analog image processing. It allows a much wider range of algorithms to be applied to the input data and can avoid problems such as the buildup of noise and signal distortion during processing. Since images are defined over two dimensions (perhaps more) digital image processing may be modeled in the form of multidimensional systems. Introduction to image processing 
Image processing is a method to convert an image into digital form and perform some operations on it, in order to get an enhanced image or to extract some useful information from it. It is a type of signal dispensation in which input is image, like video frame or photograph and output may be image or characteristics associated with that image. Usually image processing system includes treating images as two dimensional signals while applying already set signal processing methods to them.

Data collection is a tedious and time consuming work, particularly from remote places. So many times the collected data is noisy. But data is the base for future planning and management of water resources. Planning based on noisy data could lead to failure. The modern data collection and subsequent control system i.e. telemetry and SCADA, are introduced in this chapter.

Scheduling irrigation is the process of determining when to irrigate and how much to irrigate. Selecting the appropriate time span in between two irrigation and applying the required volume of water in each irrigation, ensures saving of water, minimize energy use, higher crop yield and lower production costs. Irrigation applied earlier than due date causes loss of water through evaporation or deep percolation and later causes water stress to plants and thereby affects the growth and yield of the plants.

Scheduling of irrigation may be required in two field conditions: (i) when available of water is adequate, (ii) when availability of water is limited.

In the places where water is adequate scheduling of irrigation follows full   irrigation with time sequence of minimum number of irrigation to ensure maximum yield and high water use efficiency. When water is limited its use is rationalized by using at the sensitive stage

Irrigation Scheduling: Approaches and Advantages
Efficient irrigation scheduling aims to optimize crop yields while maximizing water use efficiency and minimizing soil damage. This involves determining the correct timing and amount of water to apply for each irrigation event. Several criteria can be used for scheduling irrigations, broadly classified into climatological, soil water regime, and plant-based approaches. The most suitable criterion depends on specific soil, plant, climate, and management factors.
Climatological Approach
Under conditions where soil water is readily available, the potential rate of water loss from a crop primarily depends on the atmosphere’s evaporative demand. This approach uses potential evapotranspiration (PET) or cumulative pan evaporation (CPE) over short periods as an index for irrigation scheduling.
Penman (1948) defined PET as the water transpired by a short, uniformly green crop completely covering the ground and never lacking water. He also noted that PET is generally a fraction of pan evaporation under the same conditions. PET can be estimated using various techniques, including lysimeters, energy balance calculations, aerodynamic approaches, and empirical formulas. Based on PET or crop water use rates over short periods, irrigation can be conveniently scheduled. Lysimeters isolate the crop root zone, allowing accurate determination of water balance components by controlling and measuring difficult-to-assess processes.
Soil Water Regime Approach
This approach uses the available soil water held between field capacity and the permanent wilting point in the effective crop root zone as a guide for irrigation scheduling. Soil moisture tension, which reflects how tightly water is held by soil particles, can also serve as an indicator.

Science has individual, social, and institutional dimensions. Because of the social relevance of science, the dissemination of scientific information is crucial for its progress and contemporaneity. A scientist observes and then tries to make sense of that observation. She/he collects data, develops theories, uses hypothesis to understand and explain a thing, or a phenomenon, and then tries to find patterns emanating from her/his observations. Scientific knowledge keeps on changing.

Science is a blend of logic and imagination; therefore, there is always a possibility of disagreement and mismatch between them. A hypothesis is often untestable. Such untestable hypothesis are often rejected by the scientific community. “Science never pursues the illusory aim of making its answers final, or even probable. Its advance is, rather, towards the infinite yet attainable aim of ever discovering new, deeper, and more general problems, and of subjecting its ever tentative answers to ever renewed and ever more rigorous tests,” writes Karl Popper (1).

A scientist formulates, corrects, or discards the theories. The job of a scientist is to discriminate false idols from the real things. Science has built-in error correcting machinery, writes Carl Sagan (2). The error bars are insistent reminders to the fact that no knowledge is complete or perfect. It is used to exercise self-criticism. Each generation of scientists reduces the error bars a little. When we are self-indulgent and uncritical, when we confuse hopes with facts, we slide into pseudoscience and superstition. Sagan believed in maintaining an essential balance between the two attitudes: openness to new ideas, no matter how counter-intuitive they may be, and the most ruthlessly sceptical scrutiny of all ideas, old and new.

It has been repeatedly proving that Science& Technology that is close and in harmony with nature is proving winner in the long run. If the past 60 years led to the Green Revolution in agriculture which often became Greed Revolution, the next 60 year should be the emergence of love for nature, diversity and Sustainable Green Revolution. The two goals – Sustainability and Productivity are inter-related.

It is also said that the main difference between the past and today is that our problems are truly global. We are also aware that globally and nationally the rich-poor divide is growing and though world produces enough food, nearly 800 million people remain food insecure. Among 8 millennium goals, eradication of poverty and hunger and environmental sustainability are perhaps the most prominent and complimentary.

10.1 Introduction

The objective of this chapter is to develop a data logger and indicator for fire detection in agriculture field. The data logger is designed with the help of Scilab. The system comprises of Ardiuini Nano, light sensor, MQ6, MQ135, IR sensor, temperature sensor, power supply. The system is designed to take sensory data on Scilab with serial communication. Fig.10.1 shows block diagram for a system. Table.10.1 shows the component list required to develop the system.

Aim: To obtain balanced two-phase supply from three-phase supply by Scott arrangement of two single-phase transformers.

The phase conversion from three to two phase is needed in special cases, such as in supplying 2-phase electric arc furnaces. Scott connection of two-single phase transformers is employed for conversion of a three-phase system to two phase system or vice-versa. Rating of one transformer should be 15% greater than that of the other, but in practical two identical transformers are used for interchangeability and spares. The 50% tap of one transformer (Main transformer) is connected to 86.6% tap of the other transformer (Teaser transformer). The secondaries for balanced supply system have equal number of turns.

7.1 Introduction

Agriculture is the backbone of Indian economy and almost 70 per cent of the total population depends on it. After independence, India achieved self-sufficiency in primary agriculture like food grains, fruits, vegetables and milk, etc. Now it is time to think and focus on secondary agriculture. It is assumed that with the adaption of secondary agriculture, India can achieve the goal of doubling the income of farmers. The secondary agriculture can be defined as, value addition to agricultural products, generating basic facilities for primary processing and add value to the basic agro commodities to allow farmers to get better revenues from their farm produce. It also has job creation opportunity in the rural sector to grow rural economy, which is purely based on agriculture. Further, it can also be elaborated that secondary agriculture as a production activity and invented strategy which includes sustainability of production, monetisation of farmer’s produce, straightening of extension service and recognising agriculture as an enterprise. Secondary agriculture can help drive growth of primary agriculture in the three areas i.e. (i) value addition to primary agriculture production, (ii) farmer – industrial linked and (iii) effective utilization of crop residues of primary agriculture.

The value addition to a primary agriculture production can be achieved by establishing direct linkage of farmers with market through grading of agricultural produce, cluster farming, marketing skill and financial literacy. The farmer – industrial linkage is closely associated with rural off-farm activities such as bee keeping, livestock production, etc. it can be promoted as a part of an integrated farming system. The crop residues effectively can be utilized for energy generation. There is scope of establishing rural based agricultural entrepreneurship in the field of biofuel. Agribusiness incubation can help farming community and provide reliable market linkages to improve farmer’s realisations.

Secondary nutrients are essential for balanced plant nutrition and sustained soil fertility in intensively cultivated irrigated systems. This chapter focuses on calcium, magnesium and sulphur, examining their sources, behaviour, availability and management in soil. Calcium is discussed in relation to its sources, fate in soil, crop removal, leaching and factors affecting its availability, including high sodium content, parent material and interactions with other cations. Calcium fertilizers and their practical importance are also considered. The chapter then examines magnesium, including its sources, behaviour in soil, uptake by crops, leaching and fertilizer management. Sulphur receives detailed attention through discussion of organic and inorganic forms, elemental sulphur and sulfides, sulphate behaviour and the different forms occurring in rice soils. Processes such as adsorption, leaching and immobilization influence sulphur availability and are therefore important under irrigated conditions. Practical aspects of sulphur management, sulphur-containing fertilizers and crop responses to sulphur fertilization are discussed, including effects on the nutritional quality of forages

Secondary tillage equipment refers to agricultural machinery used after primary tillage (such as plowing) to refine the soil for planting. It helps in breaking down clods, incorporating organic matter, controlling weeds, improving soil aeration, and preparing the seedbed. This step is essential for creating ideal soil conditions for seed germination and root development.
Secondary tillage operations are lighter, finer tasks performed after primary tillage to establish the proper soil texture for planting. These operations cause minimal soil inversion or shifting, and they consume less power per unit area compared to primary tillage. The tools used in secondary tillage include various types of harrows, rollers, pulverizers, rotary tillers, tools for mulching and fallowing, and cage wheels.

Introduction

An integrated approach to understanding the changing dynamics in water resources involves taking into account various factors that influence the management of water resources under changing climatic conditions (Pahl-Wostl, 2007). It is a holistic approach that combines different disciplines, including hydrology, climatology, ecology, geography, and social sciences, to develop a comprehensive understanding of water resources. The integrated approach is essential for several reasons, including addressing climate change impacts, sustainable management of water resources, enhancing water security, addressing water quality issues, and promoting collaboration among stakeholders. Climate change is causing alterations in precipitation patterns, melting glaciers, and changes in river flows, affecting water availability and quality. An integrated approach helps in understanding the climate change impacts on water resources and developing adaptation strategies (Asif et al., 2023).

Introduction

Evapotranspiration is a vital process in the Earth’s water cycle, and it involves two main processes—evaporation and transpiration. Evaporation refers to the conversion of water from its liquid state to its gaseous state, which occurs primarily from the surface of bodies of water, wet vegetation, and soils. This process requires energy, which is typically provided by direct solar radiation and ambient air temperature. Transpiration, on the other hand, is the process by which plants release water vapor through small openings in their leaves called stomata. This process is essential for plant growth and function as it helps regulate the plant’s temperature and allows for nutrient uptake and water transport. Like evaporation, transpiration also requires energy, with factors like vapor pressure gradient and wind speed influencing the rate at which water is released.

To accurately measure evapotranspiration, it is necessary to consider a range of factors such as temperature, radiation, wind speed, and humidity. Plant parameters, such as the presence of a cuticle or the size and number of stomata, can also greatly influence the transpiration rate. Other factors that may impact evapotranspiration include the season, time of day, and soil properties such as water holding capacity and root depth. Evapotranspiration is a complex concept that has been studied by various scientists and organizations over time. Three main evapotranspiration (ET) concepts have been developed: Reference ET, ET under standard conditions, and ET under nonstandard conditions. The goal of determining potential or reference evapotranspiration is to exclude crop-specific variations from the evapotranspiration process. The potential evapotranspiration concept, introduced in the late 1940s and 50s by Penman, assumes constant crop conditions and defines it as “the amount of water transpired in a given time by a short green crop, completely shading the ground, of uniform height and with adequate water status in the soil profile.” ETo, which is a climatic parameter, represents the evaporating power of the atmosphere at a certain location and time of the year and is computed from weather data. It does not take into account crop characteristics or soil conditions, and the only factors affecting it are climatic parameters. The range of ETo varies from 1–2 mm/day in humid and subhumid temperate regions to 6–9 mm/day in warm arid and semi-arid temperate regions and from 2–3 in cool humid and subhumid tropics to 6–8 mm/day in warm arid and semi-arid tropics. Actual ET is the amount of water on a large area of grass that is actively growing and covering the entire soil surface it actually uses. The amount of water that is actually evacuated from a surface as a result of the processes E and T is known as ETa. Crop water needs can be calculated by the following equation.

Hydrological models aim to predict hydrological events and processes, but there are uncertainties in their output due to the complex nature of the system and assumptions made. Empirical models use statistical or mathematical relationships, while process-based models use equations to represent physical processes.

Hydrological modeling involves various steps, leading to uncertainties that can affect the accuracy of model predictions. The four main types of uncertainties commonly encountered are data, model, parameter, and climate uncertainty. Data uncertainty arises due to errors or gaps in the input data, model uncertainty stems from limitations in the model structure or assumptions used, parameter uncertainty arises due to uncertainties in the values allocated to various model parameters, and climate uncertainty refers to uncertainties in the future climate projections used as inputs.

Introduction

Drought is an evolutionary process often triggered by precipitation deficiencies and may result in enormous economic losses. Effective early drought warnings and predictions may be beneficial for the farmers. To determine drought and its severity level, meteorological drought indices such as the standardized precipitation index, effective drought index etc. are utilized. Drought events can be foreknown using prediction models and by predicting these indices. Many studies on prediction have primarily focused on statistical approaches such as Holt-Winters, auto-regressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), etc. These statistical techniques are insufficient for providing long-term predictions. However, with improvements in machine learning techniques, there seems to be a mechanism to forecast drought in the long run with high accuracy. Frequently used machine learning algorithms in drought forecasting are artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machine, etc. Machine learning techniques have a powerful and versatile data-driven algorithm for capturing and representing complex input and output relationships.

Introduction

Agriculture is backbone of India’s economy and is largely dependent on the monsoon. Rainfall plays a dominant role in agricultural production and productivity, despite advancement in many technological fronts. Forecast of rainfall is essential for planning and management of water resources especially in an agriculture-based country like India. About 65 per cent of the total cultivated land in India is under the influence of the rainfed agriculture system. Especially, monthly and seasonal rainfall forecasts provide useful information for water resource management, agricultural planning and its associated crop insurance application (Garbrecht et al., 2010).

The early prediction of rainfall is essential which help farmers to make decisions on crop production and harvesting, as well as help prevent flooding, protect human lives and resources. Rainfall forecasting is very challenging due to its uncertain nature and dynamically changing climate. It is an application of science and technology to predict precipitation in advance. It’s always been a challenging task for meteorologists. Prediction of precipitation is categorized into short-range prediction and long-range prediction. Forecasting is done through the collection and analysis of weather and climate data. Avinash et al. (2022) studied temporal variation of land use pattern in Karnataka through indices and concluded that due to fluctuations in the rainfall the forest land is degrading year by year.

The growing integration of Large Language Models into healthcare, education, business and cybersecurity has created new opportunities while introducing significant security and privacy risks. This chapter provides a comprehensive examination of vulnerabilities across the LLM lifecycle, from training and inference to deployment and integration with external applications. It discusses threats including prompt injection, jailbreak attacks, model extraction, membership inference, privacy-attribute inference and adversarial prompting. Deployment environments introduce additional risks involving unauthorized API access, misconfiguration, insecure integrations, logging-related data leakage and supply-chain attacks. The chapter also considers availability and integrity threats, including denial-of-service attacks and attempts to manipulate or remove AI-generated content watermarks. Privacy protection mechanisms such as differential privacy, anonymization, de-identification and encryption are examined as potential safeguards. Legal and regulatory considerations are also addressed, including data protection requirements and organizational governance. Because LLM applications may process sensitive personal and business information, security cannot be treated as an isolated technical feature. The chapter emphasizes continuous monitoring, secure architecture, privacy-preserving techniques, access controls and responsible governance for trustworthy LLM deployment.

Seeding /Sowing

Seeding is the process of planting seeds in soil to grow crops, plants, or grass. It is a fundamental step in the cultivation of plants and is essential for agricultural production, landscaping, and reforestation. The goal of seeding is to establish and promote the growth of desirable plants, allowing them to germinate, develop, and eventually mature into a full-grown plant, tree, or crop.

The process of seeding typically involves placing seeds at a specific depth in the soil, providing the necessary conditions for germination (such as water, light, and temperature), and ensuring proper spacing between seeds to allow for healthy plant growth. The choice of seeding method and the timing of seeding can vary depending on the type of plant or crop being grown and the specific environmental conditions of the planting area.

Seeding can be done manually by hand; using specialized seeding tools and equipment, or through mechanized methods, such as using tractors and seed drills for larger agricultural operations. The success of seeding is crucial for the establishment of healthy and productive plants, making it a critical step in agriculture and horticulture.

Seedling:A seedling is a very young plant that grows from a seed. When the moisture, light, and temperature conditions are correct, the seedling’s development begins with seed germination and the formation of three main parts:

1.Radicle - Embryonic root

2.Hypocotyl - Embryonic shoot

3.Cotyledons - Seed leaves.

In vegetables and annual ornamental crops where generally seed size is small they are germinated in nursery beds or in plug trays indoor (greenhouse) or outdoor(field), hardened before transplanting.

Sapling: A sapling is a young tree, say more than 1 year and less than 3 years’ old. In the life cycle of trees, a seedling converts into a sapling as the next stage of development. It is nearly one-meter tall and generally remains to be known as a sampling until its stem reaches 7 centimetre in diameter. The time period of this stage depends upon the particular species of a tree. In vegetable and annual ornamental crops seedlings generally are one month to 40 days old. Older than this, seedlings do not give better yields on transplanting. Very young seedlings exhibit larger mortality on transplanting.

Transplanting: Transplanting or replanting is the technique of moving a plant by uplifting from one location to another. From nursery beds seedlings or saplings are shifted and planted either in the field or greenhouses for commercial growing. Seedlings are uprooted if grown in soil medium. They are transplanted with growing medium. Uprooted seedlings take time to establish at a new place and face transplanting shock- time taken by roots to establish contact with the soil or growing medium.

The success of mechanized transplanting largely depends on the quality of seedlings used, making seedling raising an essential component of the process. This chapter revolves around the techniques and practices involved in raising seedlings that are optimized for transplanters. Proper seedling raising ensures that the plants are healthy, uniform, and robust, thereby improving the efficiency of the transplanting process and enhancing crop yields. We will explore various methods for preparing seedlings, including the use of specialized nurseries, seedling trays, and appropriate handling techniques to prevent damage. Understanding these techniques is important for achieving optimal performance from transplanters, reducing labor costs, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Transplanting is a common method for controlling weeds in wet or puddled fields. It uses less seed than direct seeding but requires significantly more labor. Additionally, transplanted crops tend to take longer to mature due to transplanting shock.
TECHNIQUES OF MANUAL TRANSPLANTING
Manual transplanting can be performed using two different methods:
Random Method
In the random method, seedlings are transplanted without maintaining a set distance or spacing between plants. While it’s difficult to establish equal distances between each hill in this method, it is crucial that the estimated distances are neither too close nor too wide. The spacing should range between 10 cm and 25 cm to ensure effective weed control through early shading from the rice canopies.

Seepage is the movement of water through the soil body and foundation of a hydraulic structure. In an earthen dam, uncontrolled seepage may produce excessive water loss, high pore-water pressure, slope instability, internal erosion, piping, or complete structural failure. Seepage analysis therefore determines the quantity and path of water movement and helps engineers design filters, drains, impervious cores, cut-offs, and other protective components. This chapter explains the objectives and importance of seepage analysis, Darcy’s law, permeability, seepage velocity, phreatic lines, flow nets, equipotential lines, and flow channels. It also examines seepage forces, piping conditions, exit gradients, and methods for improving dam safety.

Rationally selected and contextually defined research problem is the foundation to the successful research project. If the selected research problem is not in line with the interests of the researcher, available time, resources, infrastructure & knowledge base then achieving success in research process remains highly uncertain. Consequently, in addition to hindering of professional growth of the researcher, it also results in wastage of time, money and human effort. Most importantly, it may sometimes add up incorrect knowledge into scientific base, hindering the process of scientific progress. Hence the identification of the research problem and designing the problem statement is the most important step in the research process.

Sensor is a device which converts environmental parameters into electrical signals. In the broad definition, it is a device, module, machine, or subsystem which is designed to detect events or changes in the environment and send the information to other electronics components. An actuator is a component of a machine which is responsible for moving and controlling a system. A microcontroller is a small computer on a single metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) integrated circuit (IC) chip. This chapter explains the microcontroller development boards and their components along with the classifications of sensors and actuators.

Sensors are chosen on the basis of application where they need to be implemented like Industrial process control, measurement and automation, Automobiles, Consumer electronics, Aircraft, Medical products etc. As with change in application the selection criteria changes, so application needs to be considered.

Quality is the ultimate criterion of the desirability of any food product to the consumer. Overall quality depends on quantity, nutritional and other hidden attributes along with sensory quality. Sensory quality is of great importance to both processors and consumers, since it attracts consumers; it satisfies consumers’ aesthetics and gustatory sense. Sensory quality is the combination of sensory senses of perception responsible for choosing and eating a food.

According to Institute of Food Technologists and the American Society for Testing and Materials, sensory evaluation is a scientific method used to evoke measure, analyze, and explain those responses to products as perceived through different senses like sense of sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing (Stone and Sidel, 2004). Sensory evaluation gives a general rule for the preparation and serving of samples under controlled conditions so that unfair decisions are minimized. People for sensory evaluation are often placed in individual test booths so that the judgments they give are true and do not reflect the opinions of those around them.

Samples with random numbers are given to the evaluators so that they do not form judgments based upon labels, but rather on their sensory experiences. Products may be given in different orders to each evaluator to help measure and to ensure internal validity by controlling the potential confounds created by sequence and order effects. To control unwanted variation and to improve test precision, standard procedures may be established for sample temperature, volume, and spacing in time, as needed.

Sensory evaluation or testing is a quantitative science in which numerical data are collected to establish lawful and specific relationships between product characteristics and human perception. Sensory methods draw heavily from the techniques of behavioural research in observing and quantifying human responses. For example, we can assess the proportion of times people are able to discriminate small product changes or the proportion of a group that expresses liking for one product over another. Another example is having people generate numerical responses reflecting their perception of products taste and smell.

Sensitivity-Threshold tests Sensitivity tests are conducted to assess the ability of individuals to detect different tastes, odors and feel the presence of specific factors in.
