3.1 The Sun

The Sun is a star. It is a huge, spinning, glowing sphere of hot gas. It appears so much larger and brighter than the other stars because we are so close to it. The Sun is the center of our Solar System and contains most of the mass in the Solar System. All of the planets in our Solar System, including Earth, orbit around the Sun. In sun the energy generation is a multi-step process of thermo-nuclear fusion reactions. In the thermo nuclear fusion hydrogen (four protons) combines to form helium (one helium nucleus). The mass of the helium nucleus is less than that of four hydrogen protons and mass having been lost in the reaction is converted to energy. The reaction is represented as

5.1 Introduction

Energy in the form of heat is one of the main energy requirements in domestic, agricultural, industrial and commercial sector of our economy. From an enduse point of view, solar thermal energy finds its application in these areas. Solar thermal energy devices convert radiant energy of the sun into thermal energy for different productive works. In fact, solar energy consists of infrared radiation, it is characteristics of infrared radiation that whenever it falls on any object, it converts into thermal heat energy.

The conversion of sun light into thermal energy is easily or conveniently achieved by means of a metallic or plastic cover, painted black with ordinary black board paint or having selected coating over it and covered with one- or double-glazing cover for transmitting solar radiation inside it. This metallic cover is known as absorber, below it either channels or pipes or passages for allowing entry of water or air are provided, through which heat energy is transferred to working medium either air or water. The absorber plate is covered with suitable thickness of insulating material on its back or sides for preventing loss of heat from the absorber plate. This complete system is enclosed in an airtight box. When exposed to solar radiations, the blackened metallic surface absorbs solar energy and converts into heat. This heat could be used for cooking of food, heating of water and air, evaporation of moisture form the grains etc. In fact, absorber works on the principle of black body, which absorbs maximum and a good absorber, is a good emitter. Hence generated heat could be utilized for different applications.

Greenhouse essentially functions based on solar energy to control environment for protecting cultivation from adverse condition. Computer simulation and mathematical modeling are important tools for determining the energy efficient design as well as predicting the overall system performance. The greenhouse climate may be used for crop drying, distillation, biogas plant heating, space conditioning, and aquaculture. Thus, any required configuration of greenhouse can be thermally modeled for predicting and optimizing the performance. The solar energy based greenhouse modeling are useful in evaluation of various applications like greenhouse heating, greenhouse cooling, greenhouse drying and aquaculture greenhouse. Greenhouse clubbed with ground air collector increase in plant and ambient temperature of 5–7°C during night in winter. Whereas, using evaporative cooling pad with greenhouse reduces the ambient temperature of 4–5°C during midday summer. A greenhouse can be very well used for large-scale crop drying, while not in use for cultivation. Some other applications such as covered crop drying and aquaculture are also discussed.

Biofuels that are solid, such as wood, agricultural leftovers, pellets, and briquettes, serve as a starting point for investigating alternative energy sources. This section walks readers through the complexities involved in producing solid biofuel, including harvesting, pre-treatment, and creative pelletization methods. By doing this, it highlights the renewable nature of solid biofuels and their ability to lower greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting their benefits for the environment. Simultaneously, difficulties associated with its application, ranging from administrative worries to land use issues, are examined closely. Turning its attention to liquid biofuels, the chapter tells the story of ethanol, biodiesel, and advanced biofuels. By examining the choice of feedstock, manufacturing procedures, and real-world uses, it highlights the adaptability of liquid biofuels in the energy system. Although they are not without difficulties related to land use, food production, and water use, their ability to function with current infrastructure and their critical role in improving energy security stand out as distinguishing characteristics[3].

Urbanization, industrialization, and economic growth in India have all led to an increase in the generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) by a number of urban local bodies (ULBs). In cities with high population densities, SWM is a significant difficulty. Being a diverse country with a wide range of religious communities, customs, and traditions like India makes it more challenging to accomplish sustainable development in a country that is rapidly industrialising and improving its standard of living. Although there have been substantial changes in the social, economic, and environmental spheres, India’s SWM systems have mostly remained the same. Currently, 90% of residual waste is thrown in the informal sector rather than properly disposed of. To make SWM more sustainable, new management practises and disposal sites are needed. The inefficiency of the current waste management systems has a detrimental effect on the economy, the environment, and public health. The Ministry of Environment and Forests of India introduced regulations for garbage treatment, although there is irregular and insufficient compliance.

Percent Solutions

There are three types of percent solutions. All are parts of solute per 100 total parts of solution. Based on the following definitions you may calculate the concentration of a solution or calculate how to make up a specific concentration

    1.    % W/W - Percent of weight of solute in the total weight of the solution. Percent here is the number of grams of solute in 100 grams of solution. 
        Example: 
        A 100% (W/W) NaCl solution is made by weighing 100 g NaCl and dissolving in 100 g of solution

    2.    % W/V - Percent of weight of solution in the total volume of solution. Percent here is the number of grams of solute in 100 ml of solution. This is probably the least significant way of naming a solution, but the most common way of doing it. In fact, any percent solution not stipulated as W/W, W/V, or V/V is assumed to be % W/V. 
        Example : A 4% (W/V) NaCl solution is 4 g of NaCl in 100 ml of solution.

    3.    % V/V - Percent of volume of solute in the total volume of solution %V/V. Percent here is the number of milliliters of solute in 100 ml of solution. 
        Example: A 10% (V/V) ethanol solution is 10 ml of ethanol in 100 ml of solution; unless otherwise stated, water is the solvent. 

Introduction to Energy Sources

Consumption of nonrenewable energy sources has caused more environmental harm than any other human activity during the last century. Electricity generated from fossil fuels like coal and crude oil has resulted in excessive levels of hazardous gases in the environment. As a result, several issues exist now, such as ozone depletion and global warming. Vehicle pollution has also been a significant issue.

As a result, alternative energy sources have become increasingly vital and relevant in today’s society. These sources, such as the sun and wind, can never be depleted and are hence referred to as renewable. They produce fewer emissions and are readily available locally. Their application has the potential to significantly reduce chemical, radioactive, and thermal pollution. They stand out as a promising source of infinite clean energy. These are also known as non-conventional energy sources.

Therefore, rain or snow, which is not used directly by the plants, becomes a potential source of either surface or ground water for irrigation. In areas with extreme low temperature, snow contributes major source of water supply wherever, in humid and sub humid regions, rain is the principal source. Precipitation, rain or snow, is the first stage of the continual cycle of water in its round from atmosphere to the earth and return by evaporation from water bodies, snow surfaces and land surfaces. The continual cycle of distribution of water is governed by the process called as hydrologic cycle. Thus, precipitation or atmospheric water is the first form of water above the earth’s surface, the second form being the surface water on earth and the third form is the subsurface water or underground water. The study of occurrence, distribution and circulation of precipitation through the unending hydrologic cycle forms the basic part of study of hydrology. As mentioned above, the part of precipitation that is not used by the plants in-situ flows over the soil surface as runoff and contributes to either surface or ground water supply.

Engineering hydrology is the science that deals with the estimation of runoff and its transmission from one place to the other, besides dealing with the properties of water in nature. For, an engineer, surface and groundwater are the two most important components to deal with. But due to lack of data of stream flow, it is usually necessary to study precipitation, evaporation and percolation to indirectly determine the availability of surface and groundwater. For planning and management of water resources systems, an engineer has to estimate (i) water resources potential of a basin, (ii) dependable yield for irrigation and hydel power generation and industrial water demand (iii) probability of occurrence of floods with their magnitude, (iv) sediment yield and transportation (v) hydrometeorology (vi) new sources of water for irrigation (vii) stream flow forecasting by use of precipitation data (viii) water control, navigation, control of soil erosion and control of pollution of water bodies and (ix) operation and maintenance of river valley projects. For estimation of the above mentioned parameters, it is important to understand the hydrologic cycle properly.

18.1. What?

The basic objective of sowing is to place the seed in rows at the desired depth, to maintain proper spacing between seed to seed, cover the seeds with soil and provide proper compaction over the seed if required. Precise sowing/planting helps in better crop stand. This helps to achieve optimum yields. Traditional sowing methods include broadcasting manually, opening furrows by a country plough and dropping seeds by hand (i.e.) dibbling. In the present day, improved seed-cum-fertilizer drills are used for sowing and fertilizer application. These are provided with seed and fertilizer boxes, metering mechanism, furrow openers, covering devices, frame, ground drive system and controls for variation of seed and fertilizer rates.

18.2. Types of sowing/planting equipment

Sowing equipment include seeders and transplanters. Various types of sowing equipment, viz., manually operated, animal drawn, power operated and tractor drawn are used throughout India.

18.2.1. Seed drills

Seeders are available for sowing seeds of various crops. Some seeders have been designed with adjustable metering mechanism which makes them versatile for sowing two or three kinds of seeds. For example, a multicrop planter developed by CIAE is used for sowing garlic, maize, moong, peas and groundnut. Similarly, the institute has developed a small seed sowing drill which is used for sowing small seeds such as bajra, rapeseed and mustard.

Seeding or sowing is an art of placing seeds in the soil to have good germination in the field. A perfect seeding gives a) Correct amount of seed per unit area. b) Correct depth at which seed is placed in the soil. c) Correct spacing between row-to-row and plant-to-plant. Seed drill is a machine for placing the seeds in a continuous flow in furrows at uniform rate and at controlled depth with or without the arrangement of covering them with soil. Planter is normally used for those seeds which are larger in size and cannot be used by usual seed drills. A planter consists of: (i) hopper (ii) feed metering device (iii) knock out arrangement (iv) cut-off mechanism (v) furrow opener and (vi) other accessories. A planter has seed hopper for each row.

Abstract

The groundwater behaviour in hard rock aquifer systems has always remained enigmatic owing to the heterogeneity of the aquifer systems. This is the reason why there are a lot of failures in groundwater targeting and management in hard rock aquifer systems even after the employment of many modern technologies. For precise groundwater targeting in hard rock aquifer systems various parameters like lithology, the type and the degree of structural deformation, the degree of weathering, geomorphology, etc., will have to be analysed which involves spatial analysis of voluminous data. In the sphere of spatial modelling, GIS plays an important role. Hence, a newer study has been carried out in parts of Madurai, Dindigul and Theni districts, Tamil Nadu, to identify the groundwater provinces and their functions using GIS. In the said study, GIS images were generated on the groundwater targets through GIS integration of transmissivity, permeability, storage co-efficient and water level. Such GIS image showing groundwater maxima was overlaid with GIS image of fracture maxima, subsurface geology maxima and the geomorphology maxima and thus by various GIS based spatial manipulations, aquifers controlled by structure, geomorphology, subsurface geology, and combinations of the above various variables were brought out. This has provided potential method for precise targeting of groundwater.

Introduction

National prosperity and human resources development are primarily shaped by the availability of natural resources and their use. None the less, the benefits are quite often negated by the resultant environmental degradation concomitant with their utilisation for economic values. The problems of environmental degradation have assumed critical dimensions in many parts of India due to resources exploitation; industrialisation and urbanisation, unchecked population growth and a never ending quest for energy to meet the increasing demands. Moreover, improper utilisation of resources has resulted in such environmental problems as soil erosion, waterlogging, floods, droughts and pollution of various types besides socio-economic disparity among people.

After the 1972 Stockholm conference on Human Environment and Development, there has been a phenomenal increase in the worldwide interest in the environmental issues associated with development. Consequently, the focus of development has shifted to environment friendly and sustainable developmental planning in recent years. The Rio Summit (June 3-14, 1992) further emphasised the fact that earth is an integral and interdependent system, which require sustainable developmental planning. During deliberations of the Rio Summit (Earth Summit), it was emphasised that satellite imagery will be quite helpful in monitoring earth’s environment.

India has a long tradition of environmental protection and has enacted laws during the last three decades to give further impetus to the conservation of natural resources and protection of environment. Some of the important laws are:

Introduction

All spatial data stored in a GIS are associated with a map projection, either implicitly (so-called “unprojected” data stored with raw longitude, latitude coordinates) or explicitly (where the data have been transformed into a known map projection). Map projections are a particularly important feature of spatial data because they introduce error and distortion, since a sphere cannot be transformed to a plane without some stretching and twisting of the sphere’s surface.

The typical GIS package supports anywhere from 5 to 50 map projection types, and most projections may be modified or customized by varying their parameters. This flexibility is important for two reasons First, in order to use two or more layers together in a GIS for visualization or analysis, all data must be projected in the same way. Second, certain types of analyses, such as the measurement of area, are only valid when using certain types of projections (and conversely, are completely wrong when using an inappropriate projection).

ABSTRACT

Soil is the medium in which the plant growth and development occurs. Soil type might change with genesis of the parent material and with prevailing weather conditions. Dominant soils of Tamil Nadu are Black soil, Red soil, Laterite soil and Hill soils. Each soil type has an inherent potential to retain and release nutrients to plants. The availability of nutrients varies from place to place and hence spatial distribution of nutrients, quantity of nutrients along with plant available water determines phenological development of crops. Nutrients are broadly classified as Macro and Micro nutrients that are required for crops in large and small quantities respectively. Availability of both macro and micro nutrients and its spatial distribution has not been attempted so far at a regional level. Such regional level approach of nutrients would suffice the researchers and policy planners to employ these data as inputs to Crop Simulation Models (CSM) in forecasting productivity of crops.

Thiruvannamalai district in Tamil Nadu is divided into 6 taluks, 18 blocks covering an area of 6,31,205 haof land. The district lies between 12⁰ 00’ to 12⁰ 55’ N latitude and 78⁰ 37'to 79⁰ 45’ E longitude. Red loamy soil is predominantly prevalent followed by black loamy soils. Generally paddy, groundnut, sugarcane, millets and pulses are cultivated during fasli season. This district was chosen as our study area.

A study has been attempted to map micro nutrients of Thiruvannamalai district. Geo-referenced surface soil samples from eighteen blocks of Thiruvananmalai district covering maximum soil units of soil map were collected randomly as per procedure adopted by soil survey manual. Global Positioning System (GPS) were used to collect corresponding geographic coordinates from each soil sampling point covering the entire Thiruvananmalai district by using Rikaline Bluetooth GPS 6031- X7 model. Approximately one thousand five hundred surface soil samples were collected, air dried, powered and sieved as per standard conditions. Soil samples were analyzed for its physical, chemical and fertility properties. Fertility maps for Micro nutrients such as Zinc, Iron, Manganese, Copper and Boron were plotted in ARCGIS Desktop. Micronutrients maps form a part of base map in analyzing and preparing an aggregated fertility map of Thiruvannamalai district.

Remote sensing images have an important characteristic known as spatial frequency. Spatial frequency is defined as the number of changes in pixel value per unit distance. Few changes in pixel or brightness value over an area in an image are known as low spatial frequency area like agricultural fields, forests, water bodies, etc. If the changes are large, then it is known as high frequency area like roads, built up areas, etc. Spatial filtering is an approach for extracting quantitative spatial information by taking into account the neighbouring pixel values along with the independent pixel value. Therefore, filtering is a technique for modifying or enhancing an image. Filtering is done to improve the interpretability of raster image or to extract certain information from them. It is a neighbourhood operation because the value of any pixel in the output image is determined by applying certain algorithm on the neighbourhood pixels of the corresponding input pixel. The nature of algorithm to be applied depends upon the information which user wants to derive from the raster image. Filtering operations are mainly done for smoothening, sharpening, noise removal and edge enhancement. A filter is a kernel of small array which is applied to input pixel and its neighbouring pixels in the raster. There are many types of filters which can be applied to a raster image in R. These types with their respective R – code examples are explained further.

Most of the horticultural crops are raised by following special techniques such as budding and grafting. In case of landscape horticulture, frequent pruning and mowing are required to maintain the architecture. When new area is brought under cultivation, either jungle or unwanted plants have to be cleared. To perform all these operations, certain set of special tools are used. ABSTRACT

In the present paper, study of spectral reflectance measurements has been carried out for different type of snow and other ambient objects in snowbound areas of Indian Himalaya using Spectroradiometer (350-2500nm). The observations suggest that there are significant changes in the spectral radiances and reflectance values of snow and other ambient objects, which can be discriminated using satellite multi-spectral bands, however for characterizing the snow using satellite sensor, spectral bands having maximum radiances values should be greater than snow radiances and suitable spectral bandwidth are to be identified. The detail analysis of field collected reflectance suggest that, due to aging and grain size variation in snow, the maximum variations in reflectance was observed in the NIR region i.e. around 1040-1050nm. For contamination and snow depth, the maximum variation was observed in the visible region i.e. around 470nm and 590nm respectively. For the moisture changes, the maximum variations observed around 980 and 1160nm. The study also suggests, normalized difference snow index (NDSI) increases with the increase of aging, grain size and moisture content. This study can be helpful in selection of suitable spectral bands for snow cover applications using satellite

remote sensing and developing the algorithms for seasonal snow cover characteristics using multi-spectral and hyper-spectral data.

Sprayer is equipment used for applying insecticides, fungicides, herbicides and in some cases fertilizers as foliar sprays to agricultural crops. Sprayers range in size from man-portable units (backpacks) to Self propelled units with boom mounts covering 60-150 feet length. Sprayers include the ones used for spraying liquid formulations, dusters for dusting dust formulations and granular applicators for delivering granules.

20.2. Principle of working

Sprayers work based on Bernoulli’s principle. Basically, the sprayers have a storage tank, a plunger, lance and a nozzle. When the plunger is pushed in, the air flows at a high velocity through the nozzle. The flow of air at high velocity creates a region of low pressure just above the lance. The higher atmospheric pressure acts on the surface of the liquid insecticide causing it to rise up the lance and the insecticide leaves out through the nozzle as a fine spray.

Sprayers are fitted with hollow cone nozzles for spraying pesticides and with flat fan nozzles for herbicides.

Sprinkler irrigation is an advanced method of irrigation in which water is sprayed to air and allowed to fall on the ground similar to rainfall. The spraying of water occurs through nozzle connected to a network of pipes with water under pressure. The rate of application and area of coverage under a sprinkler is regulated by suitable selection of nozzle size and pressure in the system.

History of Sprinkler Irrigation

The sprinkler irrigation has started elsewhere in the world in the early part of twentieth century. Before 1920, sprinkler irrigation was limited to orchard, nurseries and intensive vegetable cultivation. The cost of sprinkler reduced considerably by the development of impact sprinkler and lightweight steel pipe with quick couplers in the 1930s. As a result, sprinkler irrigation began to spread in larger area and to the area of field crops. However, sprinkler irrigation developed mainly after the Second World War with the introduction of lightweight portable aluminum pipe.

Sprinkler irrigation has started in India from mid of 1950s. Due to requirement of high initial investment, the average Indian farmers cannot afford the system and therefore the area under sprinkler irrigation in India was 0.66mha (approx.) out of total irrigated area of 87.80mHa in 1995 (INCID). The sprinkler irrigation was first introduced in India in hilly regions such as Western Ghats in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and in the North Eastern States especially by plantation owners for irrigating tea, coffee and cardamom crops. Since the cost of aluminum pipe is high, to replace it, High Density Polyethylene Pipe (HDPE)/PVC with suitable modification have been introduced in sprinkler system. However, the area under HDPE/PVC piping system is below 20% to the total area under sprinkler irrigation. The remaining area is cultivated under aluminum or steel based sets. The indigenous manufacturing of the system has started in India only 35-40 years ago and there are about fifty numbers of manufacturers till 1996 (INCID). The details of the cultivated area under sprinkler irrigation system in the world and in Indian States are given in Table 8.1 & 8.2 respectively.

Stabilizers and emulsifiers are used in small quantities but have major effects on the structure and quality of ice cream. This chapter explains the differences between these two functional ingredient groups and describes their roles in controlling water mobility, fat destabilization, air-cell stability, texture, meltdown, and heat-shock resistance. It discusses commonly used stabilizers and emulsifiers, their individual characteristics, and the advantages of using blended systems. Particular attention is given to formulation balance and the defects that may arise from incorrect selection or dosage, including gummy texture, weak body, poor meltdown, and structural instability. Practical guidelines help manufacturers select and use these ingredients effectively for consistent product quality.

The valorization of agri-biomass and organic waste is governed by a mix of regulations, standards, and policies aimed at promoting resource efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and fostering sustainable development. These measures include national and international initiatives, sector-specific laws, and economic instruments designed to incentivize waste management and promote the utilization of byproducts for energy, materials, and other applications. The valorization of agri-biomass and organic waste into biofuels, bio-based chemicals, bioenergy, and other value-added products is increasingly being recognized as a critical pillar of sustainable development, circular economy, and climate action. In India, the regulatory and policy framework surrounding this sector has evolved significantly in recent years, reflecting growing governmental interest in managing agricultural residues, reducing pollution, promoting renewable energy, and incentivizing green industries. A wide range of ministries—such as the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW), and Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG)—as well as regulatory bodies like Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) play pivotal roles in formulating and enforcing the relevant policies, regulations, and technical standards. One of the flagship policies in this domain is the National Policy on Biofuels (2018, revised 2022), which provides a roadmap for blending biofuels such as ethanol, biodiesel, and compressed biogas (CBG) with conventional fuels. It promotes the use of second-generation (2G) feedstocks like agricultural residues, municipal solid waste, and non-edible oilseeds for biofuel production. Under this policy, the government supports financial incentives, viability gap funding, R&D investments, and market linkages to boost bio-refinery infrastructure. This is supplemented by the SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) initiative, launched by MoPNG, which aims to establish 5,000 CBG plants across India using agri-residues, cattle dung, and organic waste, thereby encouraging decentralized waste valorization.

The stiffness of starch gels from different starches at 5% concentration was shown in decreasing order of stiffness in the following table. Of the cereal starches corn starch gel was firmest followed by wheat and rice starch gels. Among the roots and tubers starches, potato yielded a ropy paste, arrowroot a soft paste while cassava starch gave viscous fluid.

The chapter also presents the basic manufacturing process, important quality-control parameters, common manufacturing challenges, and emerging industry trends, providing a foundation for understanding ice cream as both a technical product and a commercial business.

Experiment

An experiment is a planned inquiry to obtain new facts or confirm or deny the result of previous experiment. Such inquiry can aid in an administrative decision, such as recommending a variety, a feed, a cultural practices, a fertilizer, a pesticide or a fungicide etc.

Type of Experiments

    1.     Preliminary experiments : Here investigator tries out large number of treatments in order to obtain leads for future work. Here replications are not taken for such treatments tried e.g. number of pesticides for control of diseases - take single observation for each treatment and take decision that some of them worth trying for use.

8.1 Introduction

The knowledge of statistics and probability is very helpful for correct prediction of hydrological data and correct prediction of hydrological data is useful in giving good performance in all water resources projects. Since hydrological data are highly stochastic varying both in space and time, it is essential to predict them as correct as possible. The hydrologic evens do not depend on physical and chemical laws but depend entirely on nature. They cannot be predicted exactly by using any relationship but can be predicted at different probability levels by fitting suitable probability distribution functions. Application of statistics and probability in the field of hydrology can help to predict the hydrologic events in a better way. In hydrology, objectives of statistics are as follows (Suresh, 2008):

Statistical and probability methods make it possible to organize observations, describe their variability, identify relationships, estimate extreme events, and predict values associated with selected probabilities. Hydrological data may be analysed daily, weekly, monthly, seasonally, or annually and expressed through averages, maxima, minima, dispersion, skewness, and frequency. This chapter introduces statistical terminology, correlation, regression, probability distributions, plotting positions, goodness-of-fit tests, model-evaluation tools, reliability, standard error, and risk analysis. These techniques are essential for flood-frequency analysis, planning, and hydraulic design.

Abstract

Agro-food industries generate a large amount of by-products and wastes. These byproducts and wastes have a negative impact in terms of the environmental concern due to the increase of pollutant disposal, and industrial sustainability because of high costs related to their management. These byproducts and wastes are rich in minerals, sugars and proteins. The composition and characteristics of wastes from different food processing industries vary and rely upon the production technique and the nature of the product. India is the second largest producer of rice/paddy in the world and the utilization of rice bran is gaining importance. However, a small fraction of these have been utilized. In case of fruits and vegetables, industrial processing of potato generates between 70 and 140 thousand tons of peels worldwide annually. Moreover, 37% of world’s total annual production of banana is shared by India. Hence, to minimize the disposal fees and trash collection new policies and methods have been developed for handling and treatment of wastes and byproducts. This chapter envisages the status of different agro-food industrial byproducts and wastes for the development of different food and non-food products.

Steam is utilized in steam power plants, steam engines, atomic power plant, and food industry for pasteurization, sterilization, textile industry, paper industry and in railway to generate power. Steam is also utilized in process type industries like sugar industries, textile industries, chemical industries for sizing and bleaching. Steam is also employed to store energy and transported through pipes.

“Steam generator or boiler is, usually, a closed vessel made of steel. Its function is to transfer the heat produced by the combustion of fuel (solid, liquid or gaseous) to water, and ultimately to generate steam” [4] . The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) [5] gives the following definition of the steam generating unit:

INTRODUCTION
The hydraulic power steering system operates by using pressurized power steering fluid to reduce steering effort. The system is powered by a pump, driven by an engine accessory drive or serpentine belt. The pump sends high-pressure fluid through a hose to the input side of the power steering gear-control valve. The high pressure applied to the control valve assists the driver in turning the front wheels. The power steering fluid is stored in a reservoir, and the fluid returns from the steering gear at a much lower pressure to maintain the proper level in the reservoir.
In a hydraulic power steering system, the fluid is continuously pumped, and the system is influenced by engine speed. High RPM results in high-pressure output, while lower RPM causes low-pressure output. To ensure constant pressure, the power steering pump uses a bypass valve, which regulates the pressure regardless of the engine speed. This helps maintain consistent performance.
ELECTRO-HYDRAULIC POWER STEERING
These systems employ a brushless electric motor to drive the hydraulic power steering pump instead of an engine driven accessory drive or serpentine belt. This system operates the same and provides the same feel of a conventional hydraulic power steering system.
Electric Power Steering or Motor-Driven Power Steering
This system eliminates hydraulics and pressurized fluid from the system. When the driver turns the steering wheel, a brushless bi-directional permanent magnet motor connected to the steering gear or steering column turns the front wheels. Sensors detect which way the steering wheel is turned to assist the movement of the steering gear in the correct direction. No matter what kind of

This rotation pulls the pit man arms on one side and pushes at the other side. This motion is conveyed to the wheels by the drag link and makes the front wheel turn in the requisite direction.

INTRODUCTION
The system responsible for controlling the angular movement of the front wheels of a tractor is called the steering system. This system reduces the effort required by the operator to turn the front wheels through the application of leverages. The key components of the steering system include the steering wheel, steering shaft, steering gear, drag link, steering arm, tie rod, and king pin.
When the operator turns the steering wheel, the motion is transferred via the steering shaft to produce angular movement in the pitman arm, through a set of gears. The pitman arm then transmits this angular motion to the steering arm via the drag link and tie rods. The steering arm, which is attached to the king pin (integrated into the stub axle where the wheels are mounted), influences the movement of the front wheels.
The primary function of the steering system is to control the vehicle’s direction. This is achieved by converting the rotation of the steering wheel into a change in the angle of the steering wheels’ axes through a series of links. The steering system also ensures directional stability, ensuring that the vehicle automatically returns to a straight path when the steering force is released. Additionally, the system is designed to minimize tire wear.
Steering systems can be classified based on their wheel operation: front wheel steering, rear wheel steering, or all-wheel steering.
When the operator turns the steering wheel, the motion is transmitted through the steering shaft to tire angular motion of the pitman arm, through a set of gears. The angular movement of the pitman arm is further transmitted to the steering arm through the drag link and tie rods. Steering arms are keyed to the respective king pins which are integral part of the stub axle on which wheels are mounted. Water used for irrigation can be stored mainly in three sources i.e. soil reservoir, surface reservoir or groundwater reservoir. Accordingly the storage system can be defined as soil reservoir storage system, surface reservoir storage system or groundwater storage system. Each of these storage systems has its own merit and demerit. Some of the storage systems though economical but are not helpful to store the irrigation water for longer periods. On the other hand, some other storage systems are very costly, but the irrigation water can be stored there for a longer period. However, before adopting a particular storage system, economics of the system need to be calculated. The cost of installation of the system and the water stored in the storage system and its use as supplemental irrigation to the crops to increase the production in terms of monetary benefit need to be assessed and then the economics of the system should be computed. The storage system that gives maximum benefit-cost ratio and net present value should be adopted for storage of irrigation water. The different types of storage systems are discussed below.

Abstract

Pulses constitute an important component of the diet and are a major source of protein in vegetarian diet. India has largest area under pulse cultivation and produces a variety of pulses. A large portion of this produce gets spoiled due to insect and fungal attack. A variety of insecticides and fungicides are used for the control of pest during storage. There is an increasing trend towards the reduction in the use of pesticides in storage due to strong demand from consumers to choose food with no pesticide residue, development of insect resistance to pesticides and the impact of pesticides’ use on environment. All these have posed a challenge to refine the existing management procedures of storage and commodity to find the optimal solution. Controlled/ Modified Atmosphere storage offers an alternative to the use of pesticides extends storage life and maintains product quality. The Controlled/Modified Atmosphere is created by altering the composition of the atmosphere in terms of CO2, O2, and N2 concentration. High CO2 produce undesirable conditions for insects and microbes and thus control their activity.

Since wheat products particularly maida and atta form the major raw material in widely consumed food items like chapati, bread and biscuit. Fortification of flour as followed in many other countries could be an important strategy to help realize this goal. The technology of flour fortification is effective and cost affordable. Effective flour fortification program would require collaboration between scientific community, governmental and non-governmental agencies, and industry and consumer groups.

Since ancient times, agriculture is an outdoor or open field production of crops. Open field production is climate and weather dependent. In fact, growth and development of crops under a particular set of climate parameters defines geographical location, productivity and production period of different crops. The magnitude of impact of climate and weather on agricultural productivity and quality of produce is appreciated by farmers and the scientific community, including horticulturists. Abiotic and biotic factors govern crop production potential and quality of products. Abstract

‘Made in India’ is no more a sign of poor quality. However, in the field of food grain exports, India is still lacking the required determination. The Indian food grains get rejected in the International market because of its out-dated post harvest technology (PHT). The Food Corporation of India (FCI) is the nodal national agency for the procurement, storage, processing and transporting of food grains, and their further distribution through the Public Distribution System (PDS). The government fixes the procurement price as well as the distribution price of the food grains, and the FCI has to accept it. The government compensates the resulting loss through subsidy. The government, through FCI, must encourage cultivation and marketing of premium quality food grains, by offering suitable incentives to farmers. The cost of marketing, storage and transporting of food grains can be considerably reduced with simultaneous improvement in quality of the end product, if the prevailing bag handling is replaced by bulk handling, storage, and transportation. However this needs closer coordination between various departments of the Ministry of Food and Ministry of Railways. The President of India revealed his vision to make India a developed country by the year 2020. To achieve this, the current post harvest losses to the tune of 10 percent must be reduced to 2 percent. 5.1 Introduction

A steam can be defined as a flow channel in to which the surface runoff flowing over the land surfaces and base flow/ground flow flowing below the ground surfaces meet. It receives the total flow from a specified basin. Streamflow representing the runoff phase of the hydrologic cycle is the most important basic data for hydrologic studies. Interestingly, stream flow is the only part of the hydrologic cycle that can be measured accurately. Stream flow is a historical data and like rainfall and runoff, it is a stochastic hydrologic variable. It is also called as discharge or rate of flow. Discharge is defined as the volume of water flowing through a cross section in a unit time.
