Introduction
Weather forecasting stands as a testament to humanity’s enduring quest to understand and anticipate the natural world. Far from being a mere casual prediction, it is a highly sophisticated scientific and technological discipline dedicated to projecting the future state of the Earth’s atmosphere for specific locations and times. This complex endeavor begins with the meticulous collection of vast quantities of real-time data, encompassing everything from surface observations of temperature, pressure, wind, and humidity to upperair measurements gathered by weather balloons, aircraft, radar, and advanced satellite systems. The core of modern weather forecasting lies in numerical weather prediction (NWP) models. These are intricate computer programs that embody the fundamental laws of physics governing atmospheric processes, such as fluid dynamics and thermodynamics. By feeding the enormous datasets of current atmospheric conditions into these models, supercomputers solve complex equations to simulate how the atmosphere will evolve over minutes, hours, and days. The raw output from these models is then further refined by human meteorologists who apply their expertise, integrating local geographical influences, historical patterns (climatology), and statistical techniques to produce the most accurate and actionable forecasts. The importance of accurate weather forecasting cannot be overstated. It serves as a vital tool across countless sectors, guiding daily personal decisions, from what to wear to whether to carry an umbrella. Crucially, for agriculture, precise weather forecasts are indispensable. Farmers rely heavily on these predictions to make informed decisions that directly impact crop yield and livestock health. Knowing when to plant seeds, schedule irrigation, apply fertilizers and pesticides, or harvest crops is directly influenced by anticipated rainfall, temperature extremes, and wind conditions. Timely warnings of frost, hailstorms, or prolonged droughts can enable farmers to take protective measures, minimizing losses and ensuring food security. For example, in regions like Telangana, where agriculture is a dominant sector, understanding

Weather forecasts play a crucial role in disease control measures for crops. By providing advance warning of favorable conditions for disease outbreaks, weather forecasts enable farmers to take proactive measures to prevent or mitigate the impact of diseases on their crops. This approach is particularly important in modern agriculture, where crop diseases can have devastating effects on yields and quality. The relationship between weather conditions and crop diseases is complex, with factors such as temperature, humidity, rainfall, and wind direction all playing a role in the development and spread of diseases. For example, high humidity and rainfall can create ideal conditions for fungal diseases, while warm temperatures and dry conditions can favor the development of bacterial diseases.By analyzing weather forecasts, farmers can identify periods of high disease risk and take steps to protect their crops. This might involve applying fungicides or bactericides, adjusting irrigation schedules, or implementing other cultural controls to reduce the risk of disease outbreaks (Fig. 12.1). In recent years, advances in technology have improved the accuracy and availability of weather forecasts, making it easier for farmers to access the information they need to make informed decisions about disease control.Additionally, the development of predictive models that incorporate weather data, crop phenology, and other factors has further enhanced the ability of farmers to anticipate and manage disease outbreaks . Overall, the use of weather forecasts in disease control measures is a critical component of integrated disease management (IDM) strategies, which aim to minimize the economic, environmental, and social impacts of crop diseases. By leveraging advances in weather forecasting and predictive modeling, farmers can reduce their reliance on chemical controls, promote more sustainable agricultural practices, and improve the overall health and productivity of their crops.

Weather, while often benign and essential for life, can also manifest in powerful and destructive forms, posing significant threats to human life, property, and the environment. This chapter, “Weather Hazards,” will delve into the detailed nature of these potentially dangerous atmospheric phenomena.
We will explore a range of significant weather hazards, including severe storms such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hailstorms, which can bring intense winds, torrential rainfall, and damaging projectiles. We will also examine the characteristics and impacts of tropical cyclones (hurricanes, typhoons), known for their devastating winds, storm surges, and widespread flooding. Furthermore, we will discuss the dangers associated with extreme temperature events, including heat waves, characterized by prolonged periods of excessively hot weather, and cold waves, marked by extended periods of dangerously cold temperatures. We will also cover the challenges posed by heavy snowfall, blizzards, and ice storms.
For each hazard, we will investigate the meteorological conditions that lead to its development, the typical characteristics and intensity scales used to classify it, and the primary impacts it can have on society and the natural world. Understanding the formation, behavior, and potential consequences of these weather hazards is crucial for effective forecasting, issuing timely warnings, and implementing mitigation strategies to enhance safety and resilience.
Join us as we embark on a detailed exploration of the forces of nature that can transform familiar weather into formidable hazards.

A weather hazard is an extreme weather event that threatens people or property. There are various weather hazards that affect agricultural productions. These hazards vary from one climatic zone to another and occur at different times, although some regions are more vulnerable to certain hazards than other. These weather hazards depend on the latitude of the place on the world map. These hazards affect crops and agricultural productivity negatively if they are not checked. Every agricultural zone has one particular hazard that is associated with it and in most cases affects the crop productions and reduces the annual crop yield. Weather hazards include cyclones, droughts, f loods, hailstorms, heat-waves and cold-waves.

The hazard is distinguished from an extreme event and a disaster. An extreme event is simply an unusual event; it does not necessarily cause harm. A disaster is an event that does cause harm in significant amounts. Weather hazards are often called as natural hazards. The natural hazards become natural disasters when people’s lives and livelihoods are destroyed.

Hydrologic hazards are the result of either excess or a severe lack of water, i.e., flood or drought. Hydrometeorological hazard is a process or phenomenon of atmospheric, hydrological or oceanographic nature that may cause loss of life, injury or other health impacts, property damage, loss of livelihoods and services, social and economic disruption, or environmental damage. Human and material losses caused by natural disasters are a major obstacle to sustainable development. By issuing accurate forecasts and warnings in a form that is readily understood and by educating people about how to prepare against such hazards, before they become disasters, lives and property can be protected.

DROUGHT

Drought is a relative term used with reference to deficiency of rainfall when compared to normal rainfall of a given location. However, drought cannot be defined in terms of amount of rainfall or number of days without rain. Since ancient times droughts have had far-reaching effects on humankind by causing the failure of crops, decreasing natural vegetation, and depleting water supplies. Drought is different from other hazards; in that it develops slowly. It is a hazard that requires many months to emerge and that may persist for many months or years thereafter. This type of hazard is known as a ‘creeping’ hazard. Generally, this occurs when a region receives consistently below average precipitation.

In today’s rapidly evolving world, food production is at the confluence of tradition and innovation. While age-old farming practices have sustained civilizations for millennia, the modern era demands an unprecedented level of precision and foresight. Weather intelligence—the practice of integrating detailed meteorological data with advanced analytics and decision support systems— is revolutionizing food production, from agriculture and fisheries to animal husbandry (Fig. 1.1). This chapter lays the foundation for understanding how accurate and timely weather data underpins food security, economic sustainability, and environmental stewardship. It further highlights global themes addressing the growing demand for food in any nation with a burgeoning population, the challenges of climate change, and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events. This introduction also outlines the objectives and structure of this book, which aims to empower decision makers with the knowledge needed to navigate a world where climate and food production are inextricably linked.
1.1 Context & Importance
1.1.1 The Changing Face of Food Production
Food production has always been sensitive to the whims of nature. Historically, farmers relied on folklore, seasonal patterns, and local wisdom to guide planting and harvesting cycles. With growth and development of atmospheric sciences from 19th century, farmers started depending upon weather forecasts in planning and management of agricultural production systems. However, with the advent of climate change, environmental degradation, and increasingly unpredictable

Forecasting crop diseases based on the movement of weather systems is a critical component of modern agriculture, enabling farmers and agricultural stakeholders to take proactive measures to prevent or mitigate the impact of disease outbreaks on crop yields and quality. The relationship between weather patterns and crop disease transmission is complex and multifaceted, with various weather factors influencing the development, spread, and severity of crop diseases. (Fig. 14.1). Weather systems, including high and low-pressure systems, fronts, and wind patterns, play a significant role in the spread of crop diseases. For instance, wind currents can transport fungal s3pores, bacteria, and viruses over long distances, facilitating the spread of diseases such as powdery mildew, rust, and leaf spot. Additionally, weather conditions like temperature, humidity, and precipitation can affect the growth and development of crops, making them more susceptible to disease. Recent advances in meteorology, plant pathology, and data analytics have enabled researchers to develop predictive models that can forecast crop disease outbreaks based on weather patterns. These models use historical weather data, disease surveillance data, and crop phenology data to identify patterns and correlations between weather systems and disease outbreaks.

Weather wisdom refers to the ability to understand, interpret, and apply knowledge of weather patterns, forecasts, and conditions to make informed decisions in various aspects of life. This concept encompasses a comprehensive understanding of meteorological principles, as well as the ability to analyze and apply weather information in a practical and effective manner. At its core, weather wisdom involves a grasp of basic meteorological concepts, such as atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity, wind, and precipitation. This foundational knowledge serves as a framework for understanding more complex weather phenomena, such as storms, droughts, and heat waves. In addition to a solid understanding of weather fundamentals, weather wisdom also requires the ability to interpret forecasts, warnings, and advisories issued by meteorological agencies. This involves being able to comprehend and analyze weather forecast models, as well as understanding the limitations and uncertainties associated with weather prediction (Fig. 2.1). Furthermore, weather wisdom involves familiarity with local weather patterns, climate, and microclimates. This knowledge is essential for making informed decisions, as local weather conditions can vary significantly from regional or national forecasts. The application of weather knowledge is a critical component of weather wisdom. This involves being able to apply weather information to various aspects

Of the various weather elements affecting crops, temperature and rainfall are perhaps the most important. It is the reason for the development of special flora and fauna in different climatic zones of the world as seen in the tropical, temperate and frigid zones. The tropical regions get abundant solar heat and the vegetation is high while it is low in the temperate regions. The vegetation is very little in the frigid zones. Similarly, natural vegetation is at its poor growth in the Arid Climates and better in the Humid Tropics. Xerophytes are confined to the Arid Climates where low rainfall is seen, while hydrophytes are confined to the Humid Tropics. Mesophytes are intermediate in their water requirement. Most of the crops are included in this group. If the crops are selected for cultivation on the basis of the optimum climatic requirements, it is likely that crop production can be maximised under rainfed as well as irrigated conditions. For example, coconut is grown in vast areas across the East and West Coasts of the Country in different agroclimatic zones and known as a coastal tree. It gives reasonably better yield in terms of quantity and quality in the Humid Tropics under rainfed conditions. However, the coconut yield scenario is totally different when the crop is cultivated in Semi-arid Tropics under irrigation. Therefore, it is a complex phenomenon to understand the influence of weather and climate on crops under rainfed and irrigated conditions in various climatic zones. The production potential of crops under field conditions could be explained through crop-wise agroclimatic zonation, whether the crop is well-suited with minimum inputs for maximising yields under rainfed conditions, but not under irrigated conditions due to crop manipulation. Many attempts were made to explain the climatic boundaries for various crops based on agroclimatic indices under rainfed conditions.

Abstract

A huge technical improvement in Information Technology (IT) has made new instruments (e.g. WEB-GIS, Open Source platforms, DBMS with geometric data) available. Distributing geospatial information on the Internet is an enforcing factor for information providers. For dissemination of spatial data, Web-GIS technology can be used, which is amalgamation of several information technologies. Open Source is a philosophy of providing software with better quality, more flexibility, and lower cost. This paper explains the use of Open Source Web-GIS which provides a fast and globally reachable way not only to represent the information about natural resources through maps and statistics but also possibility of processing the information interactively on web.

Abstract

The present study discusses the cropping pattern changes in Andhra Pradesh agriculture will leads to crop diversification and crop concentration using with Geographical Information System (GIS). Crop data were compiled for the triennium ending period 1980-81, 1990-91, 2000-01 and 2004-05 from various statistical abstracts of Andhra Pradesh. For measuring the crop diversification indices, we have used the Herfindahle index and for crop specialization is measured by using the Location quotient method. The level of crop diversification in the some districts of the state in the eighties is very high. However with the advent of green revolution, there had been a moderate crop unification or crop concentration in the eighties. This trend of crop unification is found to be reversed after 1990-91, though the magnitude of the change is not very striking. The crop diversification is observed to differ across the districts. The level of crop diversification is high in the agricultural backward regions of Rayalaseema and Telangana districts and low in the agriculturally progressive Coastal Andhra districts. During the period 1990-91 to 2004-05, the major trends in crop concentration are increase in the concentration of rice in the districts where it is popularly grown and decline in the concentration of coarse cereal crops, pulses and oilseeds. The concentration of spice crops and fruits and vegetables are also on an increasing trend, which they are popularly grown in their respective districts.

Any living organism in its natural habitat is called a wildlife. It may be plant animal or a microbe. The significance of wild life lies in setting up the balance of population in nature by maintaining food chains and food webs. It acts as the gene banks in relation to breeding of plants and animals for introduction of desirable characters such as high yield of economic product and resistance to diseases. The scientists are performing studies to screen and select useful genes in economically important organisms.

This chapter introduces the principles of wildlife ecology and the importance of biodiversity conservation within natural ecosystems. It examines wildlife communities, biodiversity, major threats to wildlife, and strategies for conservation and habitat protection. The chapter also explores the role of technology in wildlife conservation, ecological restoration, and wildlife conservation practices in India. Emerging challenges and future opportunities are considered to provide a broader understanding of maintaining wildlife populations and ecosystem integrity. The chapter emphasizes the importance of scientific management, habitat conservation, restoration, and technological support for long-term wildlife conservation.

A big layer of air called the atmosphere surrounds the earth. The air within this layer moves from place to place when it warms up or cools down. This moving air is known as wind. In other words, air in motion is called wind. Winds move moisture and heat around the world and also produce much of our weather.

The strength of the wind can vary enormously. Sometimes air moves slowly and the wind is barely noticeable. When the weather is clear there may be a gentle breeze. When the wind is still very light, but it can be felt and there may be rustlings by leaves. At other times, the air can move very quickly and become a gale or hurricane, blowing down trees and damaging electric poles and buildings.

Winds are part of a global air circulation system that acts to balance temperature and pressure around the world. Different parts of the world receive different amounts of heat from the sun. This differential heating in turn results in differences in temperature and air pressure around the world, which drives the world’s winds.

As equatorial areas are heated most, the air above them warms and rises as it becomes lighter than the surrounding air, causing an area of low pressure. In cooler areas, the air sinks because it is heavier and results in an area of high pressure. Winds will blow as air is squashed out by the sinking cold air and drawn in under the rising warm air. Any difference in temperature like this will always cause a difference in air pressure, and therefore winds will blow. These movements result in a global wind pattern, with air moving between different areas around the world and also at different heights in the atmosphere. Colder air from the poles tends to sink and move towards the equator closer to the surface of the earth. In contrast, warm air from the equator rises and moves towards the poles high in the atmosphere because it is lighter.

Air in motion is called wind. Winds move moisture and heat around the world and also produce much of our weather. Winds are part of a global air circulation system that acts to balance temperature and pressure around the world. Any difference in temperature will always cause a difference in air pressure, and therefore, winds will blow. There are two types of movement in the atmosphere, horizontal movement and vertical movement. The term wind generally refers to the horizontal movement of air relative to the earth’s surface. Vertically moving air columns are called as currents. Upward and downward air currents are referred to as updrafts and downdrafts, respectively. Vertical motion in the atmosphere is of significance for the formation of clouds, precipitation and various types of storms. The horizontal differences in air pressure are far more variable than vertical changes and give rise to a wide range of air motions. Uneven distribution of pressure over the globe is balanced through the movement of winds. Winds also act as a means of transporting heat, moisture and other properties from one part of the earth to another.

If the earth’s surface is perfectly smooth, the wind flows parallel to the earth’s surface without any friction and the wind velocity will be uniform at different heights above the earth’s surface. As the earth’s surface is not smooth, it offers friction, slows down the movement of the wind near the surface. Therefore, the wind velocity increases very slowly with increase in height up to a certain level, and there after the wind velocity increases with increase in height more rapidly (Fig.5.1). When the wind speeds are measured at different heights above the ground and plotted on a graph with height Z in logarithmic scale on y-axis and wind velocity on x-axis, the wind velocity will be zero at certain height above the ground and thereafter the wind velocity uniformly increases with increase in height. The height at which the mean wind velocity is zero due to roughness is called roughness parameter (d). Therefore, the roughness parameter is defined as the height at which mean wind velocity is zero due to roughness of the earth’s surface. In a cropped soil, the crop also obstructs free movement of air. If wind profile measurements are taken in a cropped soil and are plotted on a graph with height on y-axis in logarithmic scale and mean wind velocity on the x-axis, the mean wind velocity will be zero at a height above the roughness parameter. The difference in height (Z-d) at which the wind velocity is zero when the height is plotted on logarithmic scale is called zero plane displacement (Z0). Therefore, the zero plane displacement can be defined as the height by which the roughness parameter increases due to presence of the crop (Fig.5.2).

Air Constantly moves from place to place due to pressure differences which are caused by difference in temperature.

Wind has been defined as air in horizontal motion. According to Byers, “The wind is simply air in motion, usually measured only in its horizontal component”. According to Trewaitha, “Wind is simply air moving in a direction which is essentially parallel with the Earth’s surface.

There are two types of movement of wind in the atmosphere.

1. Horizontal movement

2. Vertical movement (Currents)

The primary wind circulation in Northern and Southern hemispheres is seen in figure on page 51.
