Water is one of the most important resources governing crop production in irrigated agriculture, and its behaviour within soil determines the availability of water to plants. This chapter presents the fundamental relationship between soil and water, beginning with the importance of soil water in crop production and the classification of soil water. Soil moisture constants and methods for measuring soil moisture content are discussed to explain the different forms and availability of water in the soil profile. The chapter introduces the potential concept of soil water and the components contributing to total soil water potential, including potential energy. Available water capacity is examined in relation to plant water supply, while capillarity and water retention explain how soil texture and pore characteristics influence water storage. The soil-water characteristic curve provides a basis for understanding changes in water content with soil-water potential. Soil-water hysteresis is also discussed to explain differences in wetting and drying behaviour. These concepts provide an essential foundation for efficient irrigation, crop water management and sustainable use of soil water resources

1.1 THE IMPORTANCE OF SOILS

Soils are the medium in which crops grow, and so they are essential to the provision of the food and fibre to sustain mankind. But besides the immense importance of this role they are an essential component to life as we know it because of their action as a buffer to control the flow of water between sky, land and sea. They are also a sink, and usually a safe sink, for many of the chemicals that might otherwise make life difficult or unpleasant.

As with other natural resources, it is important that soils are used conservatively, so that the advantages we enjoy from them now can continue to be enjoyed in the future. To do this we need to understand them, to understand the flow of nutrients from soil to plants, and back to the soil or the sea in food chains and water flow. We need to understand the processes by which rocks alter to form soils, and how fast or how slowly the process occurs in different conditions. We need to understand the decay of plant materials in the soil, and how the products of decay help to make the soil a better place for plants to grow.

The chemistry of the constituents of soils, and of the processes by which changes occur, is not simple. Nevertheless we have learnt much about it, and can apply that knowledge to ensure that soils continue their important functions, and are not exploited so that they become infertile, nor used in such a way that the fertile topsoil is lost by erosion by wind or water.

Soils play a vital role in the health of ecosystems in the world. Soils connect with air, water, rocks and organisms and are responsible for a multitude of functions in the global ecosystem services. These functions include providing habitat for most living things, air composition and quality, temperature regulation, carbon and nutrient cycling, water cycling and quality, and natural waste recycling. Mankind cannot survive without these soil functions.

30.1. Habitat

Soils are the environment in which plants grow. They provide heat, nutrients and water to nurture plants to maturity. These plants, together with other plants and organisms, create ecosystems. These plants then provide valuable habitat and food sources for animals, bacteria and other things. Ecosystems depend on the soil and soils determine the nature and kind of ecosystems.

LAND VERSUS SOIL

Land is a part of Earth’s surface that is not covered by water. It is used for agriculture, building houses, of?ce buildings, schools, hospitals, roads, railroads and even water canals. Land is measured by area [length (l) × width (w)] and the units are square meters (m²), square centimeters (cm²) etc. On the other hand, soil is Earth’s crust, which could vary from a few centimeters to a few meters in thickness (depth), needs a measure of volume [length (l) × width (w) × depth (d)] and the units are cubic meters (m³), cubic centimeters (cm³) etc. Soil is thus a three-dimensional natural body on Earth’s surface that provides anchorage to growing plants/ trees and shelter to soil biota and is responsible for the storage of water and plant nutrients, which are essential for crop production. In addition, it helps in the biodegradation of soil pollutants and puri?cation of ground water, the major source of drinking water in the world. Soil feeds all living beings on Earth and its degradation is one of the reasons for inadequate human nutrition

The arid region in India is spread over in 38.7 million hectare land. Out of the total 31.7 m hectare lies in hot arid region and remaining 7 m hectare comes under cold arid region. The hot arid region occupies major part of northwestern India (28.7 m ha) and a small pocket (3.13 mha) in southern India. The north western arid region occurs between 22°30’ and 32°05’ N latitude and 68°05’ to 75°45’ E, covering western part of Rajasthan, north western Gujarat and south western parts of Haryana and Punjab. About 62% area of arid region falls in western Rajasthan and 20% in Gujarat. Haryana and Punjab together constitute 7% area of arid region. The state wise distribution of arid region is shown in Table 3.1. Further our discussion is based on the majority area of arid region, belonging to Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab and Haryana.

India is endowed with varied types of soils and this could be attributed varied relief features, landforms, climatic realms and vegetation types in the subcontinent. In ancient times, soils used to be classified in India into fertile and sterile soils. Later, the inherent characteristics and external features of soils such as texture and colour, were used to classify the soils. Based on texture, soil types were identified as sandy, clayey, loam, etc. In terms of colour, they were red, yellow, black, etc.

Scientific surveys of soils in India have been conducted by various agencies since independence. All India Soil Survey Organization, established in 1956, carried out detailed soil surveys in the catchment areas of major river valley projects like the Damodar Valley. Later, the National Bureau of Soil Survey and the Land Use Planning (NBSSLUP) ofthe Indian Council of Agricultural Research, established in 1976, made extensive studies on Indian soils and classified them as per the USDA SoilTaxonomy

Geographic location of India is in Northern hemisphers and located between 80 4' & 370 6' N latitude and 640 7' & 970 25' E longitude. Extent of area is 329 M Ha or 329 x 104 Sq.Km or 3.29 MSq.Km. The physiography of India can be broadly grouped into triangular plateau, mountains, Indo-gangetic plains and islands. India is divided into twenty agro ecological regions and sixty five agro ecological sub regions as per NBSS and LUP. Agro ecological regions( AER) is referred to identification and demarcation of land units having comparable landform, soils, bioclimatic conditions and the length of growing period (LGP).

Soil is generally defined as the upper layer of earth in which plants grow. It is regarded as a source of nourishment to all animals, moving or static. From agriculture or crop production point of view, soil is loose earth surface that supports vegetation, its quality, type and density. It is generally treated as a dynamic living entity and its physic-biochemical properties are responsible for its nutritional index. Precision production technology with suitable management is the key factors for its longer sustainability.

1.1. Definition

Soil: Thin layer of earth’s crust made up of disintegrated and decomposed rocks, complex mineral compound, organic matter, water/air and living organism like bacteria, fungi, insects and worms and serves as the natural medium of growth of plants.

Provides nutrients, moisture, anchorage (support) and air to plants.

Parent materials are igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks.

Soil Science: Science dealing with soil (Natural resource) on the surface of the earth, including pedology (Soil genesis, classification and mapping), physical, chemical, biological and fertility properties and their relation to management for crop production.

• It provides nutrients, moisture, anchorage (support) and provides air to root system.
• There are different soil groups found in varied regions of India.
• Each group differs from other in physical and chemical properties.
• The variation in behaviour is mainly due to the nature of the parent material from which the soils are formed.
• Parent materials are Igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks.
• Physical properties like structure, texture, colour, water holding capacity, depth etc. are to be noted. Chemical properties like the presence of various plant elements, pH, EC, CEC, acidic or alkaline, etc. are considered.

Introduction

Cooking accounts for a major share of energy consumption in developing countries. Fifty per cent of the total energy consumed in India is for cooking (Fritz 1981). Most of the cooking energy requirement is met by non-commercial fuels such as firewood (75%), agricultural waste and cow dung cake (25%) in rural areas. The fuel wood requirement is 0.4 tons per person per year in India. In rural areas firewood crisis is far graver than that caused by a rise in oil prices. Marginal villagers have to forage 8 to 10 hours a day in search of firewood as compared to 1 to 2 hours ten years ago. One third of India’s fertilizer consumption can be met if cow dung is not burnt for cooking and instead is used as manure. The cutting of firewood causes deforestation that leads to desertification. Fortunately, India is blessed with abundant solar radiation (IMD, 1985). The arid parts of India receive maximum radiation i.e. 7600-8000 MJ m^-2 per annum, followed by semi-arid parts, 7200-7600 MJm^-2, per annum and least on hilly areas where solar radiation is still appreciable i.e. 6000 MJm^-2 per annum. Therefore, solar cookers seem to be a good substitute for cooking with firewood.

Principle of cooking

The different methods of cooking of food are boiling, frying, roasting, and baking. For boiling of rice, lentils etc. the temperature of food being cooked is about 100° C while for other methods, high temperatures are required. Heat is supplied at the bottom of the vessel for frying and boiling purposes in conventional cooking. Roasting and baking is generally performed on open fire or in ovens, wherein food is surrounded by hot surfaces and heat is transferred to the food by radiation and convection.

Considering the accountable post-harvest losses which is approximately 30-35 percent, food processing becomes an extremely important sector for preventing the losses and feeding the growing population. The Indian food industry is poised for huge growth, as currently valued at US$ 1.3 billion with compound annual growth rate of 20 per cent per year, increasing its contribution to world food trade every year. In India, the food sector has emerged as a high-growth and high-profit sector due to its immense potential for value addition, particularly within the food processing industry. Increasing population of the country and high cost of fuels have also created a demand for new alternate sources of energies for post-harvest processing of foods. Solar food processing technologies may become a viable option that provides good quality foods at low or no additional fuel costs. The energy policy of the developing countries now focuses on the clean renewable energy to create a further reduction of the petroleum import and to alter the utilization of petroleum energy toward the utilization of solar energy. It is an interesting fact that most of the developing countries fall in the climatic zone where the insolation is considerably higher than the world average of 3.82 kWh m-2 (Majumdar 2015). The daily horizontal insolation of India is approximately 5.80 kWh m-2 (Visavale 2009, Visavale et al. 2011). Solar dyers are an alternative to traditional drying technique and a contribution towards the solution of the problems of the open sun drying from perspective of renewable and clean energy. The International Energy Agency (IEA) declared in its 2011 solar energy perspectives executive summary (SEP 2011): “Solar energy offers a clean, climate-friendly, very abundant and inexhaustible energy resource to mankind, relatively wellspread over the globe. Its availability is greater in warm and sunny countries that will experience most of the world’s population and economic growth over the next decades.

6.1. Introduction

Solar crop drying has been demonstrated to be cost effective and an effective alternative to traditional and mechanical drying systems, especially in location with god sunshine during the harvest season. Considerable energy savings can be made with open sun drying since the source of energy is free and sustainable. However, this method of drying is extremely weather dependent and has the problems of contamination, infestation, microbial attacks, etc., thus affecting the product quality. Additionally, the drying time required for a given commodity can be quite long and results in post-harvest losses. Solar drying of agricultural products in enclosed structures by natural convection is an attractive way of reducing post harvest losses and low quality of dried products associated with traditional sun-drying methods. The crop is vulnerable to damage due to hostile weather conditions. The crop is also susceptible to re-absorption of moisture, if it is kept on the ground during periods of no sun, which reduces its quality. This type of problem can be solved by solar dryer. Many dryers have been developed and used to dry agricultural product in order to improve shelf life .Most of these either use expensive sources of energy such as electricity or combination of solar energy and some other form of energy which is not cost effective and dependent on regular supply of fuel.

Principally, drying requires temperature for removing moisture from product, air flow rate to remove moisture from drying chamber and optimum relative humidity within the drying chamber to allow fast drying. These all three requirements for drying can easily be achieved from solar energy. Solar drying is one of the direct applications of solar heat, which involves removal of moisture from the products through the application of solar energy. The removal of moisture requires only low temperature heating, which can be met easily by absorbing solar energy by the surface. This increases the temperature of the air inside the dryer. The moisture produced from the drying product is usually carried out along with the exhaust air. The characteristic of solar energy is good for the drying at low temperature i.e. high flow rates with low temperature rise. The intermittent nature of solar radiation can not affect the drying performance at low temperature. Further, solar energy is available at the site of use and saves transportation cost.

Solar energy is the energy emitted by the sun in the form of electromagnetic radiation. It is the most abundant, renewable, and sustainable energy resource available on Earth. Every hour, the Earth receives more energy from the sun than the entire human population consumes in a year. This makes solar energy a key candidate for solving the world’s growing energy needs while addressing environmental concerns. Solar Photovoltaic Fencing
Solar photovoltaic fencing utilizes solar energy to provide an effective security solution, using high-voltage electric pulses to deter intruders or animals. The system operates by converting solar energy into electricity, which is then stored in a battery for later use. The battery powers an energizer that sends high-voltage pulses along the fence, creating an electric shock when an intruder touches the live wire.
System Components and Working
1. Solar Module: Converts sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity, which charges the battery.
2. Battery: Stores the energy generated by the solar panel. The 12V/100AH battery allows the system to operate even at night or during cloudy days.
3. Energizer: The energizer is the heart of the system, generating high-voltage pulses. It works by sending electrical pulses at regular intervals (usually one pulse per second) through the fence. The energizer is powered by the battery.

3.1 Introduction

The sun emits electromagnetic radiation, which is referred to as solar radiation. Every location on the Earth’s surface receives some sunlight during the course of the year, but the amount of solar radiation varies. On a daily basis, we see much less energy from the sun than it emits and incident upon the earth. In an hour and a half, the amount of sunlight that reaches the surface of the earth is enough to provide enough energy for an entire year. 

7.1 Introduction

A greenhouse is quasi-permanent structure, covered with a transparent or translucent material, ranging from simple homemade designs to sophisticated pre-g\fabricated structures, wherein the environment could be modified suitable for propagation or growing of plants. Materials used to construct a greenhouse frame may be wood, bamboo and steel or even aluminum. Covering can be glass or various rigid or flexible plastic materials. Depending on the covering material, different terminology have been used in the context of greenhouse structures as mentioned below:

Glasshouse: A greenhouse with glass as the covering material is called glasshouse

Polyhouse: It is a greenhouse with polyethylene as the covering material.

9.1 Introduction

Basically, for heating or cooling the space using solar energy, the solar energy is to be collected, stored and distributed properly in the space to be heated or removed from the space to be cooled. There are two basic approaches for solar houses, there are:

(a)Active solar house technology

(b)Passive solar house technology

In active approach, the solar energy is collected and stored in some separate solar energy collector and then energy is distributed in the space where heating is to be done using electrically operated pumps and fans coupled with radiator etc. The storage of solar energy in active solar house may be in the form of storage as sensible heat or storage as latent heat or chemical heat storage. As per requirement of heating the size of solar collector and storage system be decided. Generally, the active concepts of solar houses are used for heating purpose. Active concept can also be used for space cooling applications. Solar vapor compression and absorption system can be used for this purpose, essentially, this includes incorporation of solar heat collectors, thermal storage system, auxiliary heat supply system (to compensate intermittent nature of sun energy) and control systems. Further, there are three ways of solar space heating i.e. solar air systems, solar liquid systems and solar heat pump systems.

In Indian Thar desert regions, excessive heat is the major problem that causes human and animal thermal discomfort. Space cooling is, therefore, the most desirable factor for the inhabitants. Various examples of dwellings responsive to climatic constraints are found in vernacular architecture throughout the world. Compact cellular layout with minimum external surface exposure to the sun, whitewashed surfaces to reduce absorptivity, blind external facades, courtyards, vegetation to provide humidity and shade, and heavy buildings constructed from high thermal capacity materials are common passive features in most of the arid regions. Wind towers for cooling ventilation are well known in Iranian and Middle East architecture, which along with cooling of the air by earth and water evaporation keep the building comfortable in hot periods. Building underground to take advantage of the large thermal storage capacity of the earth is also used in Tunisia and central Turkey.

9.1 Introduction

Solar energy can be directly converted into electrical energy through photovoltaic route. Energy conversion devices which are used to convert sun light into electricity by use of the photovoltaic effect are called solar cells. The advantages of solar cells are:

1. They are reliable, convenient and durable.
2. It is green, sustainable and pollution free technology.
3. Directly solar radiation can be converted into electricity (conversion of global solar light by flat plate photovoltaic).
4. Maintenance cost is quite low therefore suitable even in isolated and remote area, since no moving parts are involved.
5. Solar cells are quite compatible with almost all environments, respond instantaneously with solar radiation.
6. Considerable expected lifetime i.e. 20 years or even more.
7. No distribution system is required, because they are decentralized source of energy and located at the place of use.

8.1 Introduction

Agriculture has been the back bone of Indian economy and culture and it will be continued to remain as such for a long time in future. Parallel to this, energy security of a country is also very important and efforts have been given on renewable energy utilization since the fossil fuel based energy is depleting at a very fast rate. In agricultural fields, considerable amount of energy is used to do different field activities e.g. ploughing, irrigation through pumps, intercultural operations, spraying of agricultural chemicals for plant protection, harvesting, post-harvest processing etc. Therefore, there is also need to replace the conventional energy source with renewable sources to operate above mentioned agricultural activities.

Approximately, 35% of the crop production is damaged if pest and diseases are not controlled at right time. Uniform spraying of liquid formulations throughout the crop field is very important for effective control of pest and diseases. Using sprayer, liquid pesticide formulations are generally broken down to minute droplets of effective size for uniform distribution over a large surface area. Different types of sprayers are used in agricultural field based on different requirements.

Introduction

Water is the primary source of life for mankind and one of the most basic necessities for crop production. The demand for water to irrigate the crops is increasing. For sustainable production from agricultural farms, irrigating the crops at right stages is highly important. Even in rainfed situation, lifesaving irrigation during long dry spell has also been found beneficial for crop survival and to obtain the targeted yield. Considering the depletion of groundwater below the critical zone in most part of the country, energy intensive pumping for irrigation is not a viable option. Therefore utilization of available runoff water through surface storage systems followed by pumping may be a potential solution to achieve the set goal of ‘crop per drop’ mission. In this connection, micro-irrigation system including drippers and sprinklers is of great importance. However, ensured power supply is essential to operate the micro-irrigation system even in remote areas. Reliable solar photovoltaic (PV) pumps are now emerging in the market and are rapidly becoming more attractive than the traditional power sources. These technologies, powered by renewable energy sources, are especially useful in remote locations where a steady fuel supply or electricity supply is problematic. About 16 million electric pumps and 7 million diesel pumps are in operations in the country for irrigation purpose; however they are highly energy intensive. Moreover, diesel operated and electrified pumps directly or indirectly emit large amount of CO₂ gas in atmosphere and hence are not environment friendly. To meet the energy demand for irrigation, solar PV pumps have been introduced under the off-grid power generation category of National Solar Mission (NSM) with a target of 1000 MW by the end of phase II (2013-2017). The target has been revised in 2015 to a total grid connected solar power generation of 1,00,000 MW comprising 40,000 MW roof top generation and 60,000 MW grid connected solar power plants (Resolution of MNRE, Govt of India, No. 30/80/2014-15/ NSM dated 1^st July 2015).

The Sun is the primary source of heat to the Earth and its atmosphere. The heat received from other celestial bodies as well as the interior of the Earth is rather too significant. The distance that separates the Earth from the Sun is about 149.0 million km. The diameter of the Sun measures roughly about 1.3824 million km. The surface temperature of the Sun is estimated between 5500^o C and 6100^o C. (or 5762^o K).

The weight of the sun is about 1.9 X 10 30kg. The radius is 6.97 X 10 8 m or the diameter of the sun is 14 X 10 5 km. The mass of the earth is 6 X 10 24 kg, the radius is 6.4 X 10 6 m. The gravitational force of the earth is 9.81m/s². Whereas the sun‘s attractive force is 274m/s². This is 25 times higher than earth’s gravitational force.

Its radiant energy is practically the only energy source to the earth. Very small and insignificant quantities of energy are available from other sources such as the interior of the earth, the moon, and other stars. Without the sun’s intense energy and heat, there would be no life on earth.

The mean distance of the sun from the earth, also known as one astronomical unit (1 AU), is approximately 1.496 × 10⁸ km, though the distance varies as the earth revolves round the sun in an elliptical orbit. At this average distance, light travels from the sun to earth in about 8 minutes and 19 seconds. The energy of the sunlight supports almost all life on earth by photosynthesis, and drives earth’s climate and weather. The minimum sun-earth distance is about 0.983 AU and the maximum is approximately 1.017 AU. The earth is at its closest point to the sun (perihelion) on around January 3 and at its farthest point (aphelion) on around July 4.

Since the sun is not a solid body, different parts of the sun rotate at different rates. At the equator, the sun spins once about every 25 earth days, but at its poles the sun rotates once on its axis every 36 days.

3.1 The Sun

The Sun is a star. It is a huge, spinning, glowing sphere of hot gas. It appears so much larger and brighter than the other stars because we are so close to it. The Sun is the center of our Solar System and contains most of the mass in the Solar System. All of the planets in our Solar System, including Earth, orbit around the Sun. In sun the energy generation is a multi-step process of thermo-nuclear fusion reactions. In the thermo nuclear fusion hydrogen (four protons) combines to form helium (one helium nucleus). The mass of the helium nucleus is less than that of four hydrogen protons and mass having been lost in the reaction is converted to energy. The reaction is represented as

It is the primary source of energy for the Earth’s climate system, driving atmospheric and oceanic circulation, influencing weather patterns, and sustaining life through photosynthesis.2 This energy travels through space as electromagnetic waves, encompassing a broad spectrum of wavelengths, from high-energy gamma rays and X-rays to ultraviolet, visible, infrared, and radio waves. The portion of this spectrum that reaches the Earth’s surface is crucial for a multitude of processes, making thestudy of solar radiation fundamental to understanding our planet’s environment.  This introduction will lay the groundwork for exploring the characteristics, distribution, and interaction of solar radiation with the Earth’s atmosphere and surface.
5.1. Wave length of Radiation
The wavelength of radiation refers to the distance between two consecutive peaks or troughs of a wave. It’s a measure of the length of one complete cycle of the wave

The portion of this spectrum that reaches the Earth’s surface is crucial for a multitude of processes, making the study of solar radiation fundamental to understanding our planet’s environment. This introduction will lay the groundwork for exploring the characteristics, distribution, and interaction of solar radiation with the Earth’s atmosphere and surface.
4.1. Wave Length of Radiation
The wavelength of radiation refers to the distance between two consecutive peaks or troughs of a wave. It’s a measure of the length of one complete cycle of the wave (Fig. 4.1).

5.1 Introduction

Energy in the form of heat is one of the main energy requirements in domestic, agricultural, industrial and commercial sector of our economy. From an enduse point of view, solar thermal energy finds its application in these areas. Solar thermal energy devices convert radiant energy of the sun into thermal energy for different productive works. In fact, solar energy consists of infrared radiation, it is characteristics of infrared radiation that whenever it falls on any object, it converts into thermal heat energy.

The conversion of sun light into thermal energy is easily or conveniently achieved by means of a metallic or plastic cover, painted black with ordinary black board paint or having selected coating over it and covered with one- or double-glazing cover for transmitting solar radiation inside it. This metallic cover is known as absorber, below it either channels or pipes or passages for allowing entry of water or air are provided, through which heat energy is transferred to working medium either air or water. The absorber plate is covered with suitable thickness of insulating material on its back or sides for preventing loss of heat from the absorber plate. This complete system is enclosed in an airtight box. When exposed to solar radiations, the blackened metallic surface absorbs solar energy and converts into heat. This heat could be used for cooking of food, heating of water and air, evaporation of moisture form the grains etc. In fact, absorber works on the principle of black body, which absorbs maximum and a good absorber, is a good emitter. Hence generated heat could be utilized for different applications.

In a time when the world is in dire need of sustainable energy solutions, investigating biofuels becomes an essential path to supplying the always expanding supply[1]. This book chapter explores the dynamic world of solid and liquid biofuels, providing a thorough analysis of their properties, methods of production, uses, and wider ramifications in relation to renewable energy sources. Setting the scene, the introduction clarifies the role of biofuels in the larger context of renewable energy. Exploring solid and liquid biofuels becomes critical as the globe struggles with issues like climate change, depleting fossil fuel reserves, and the need to switch to cleaner energy sources[2]. These biofuels, which are defined as energy carriers made from biomass, offer a viable substitute and have the capacity to both reduce environmental impact and promote energy security. As the chapter progresses, biofuels are divided into two main categories: liquid and solid. Biofuels that are solid, such as wood, agricultural leftovers, pellets, and briquettes, serve as a starting point for investigating alternative energy sources. This section walks readers through the complexities involved in producing solid biofuel, including harvesting, pre-treatment, and creative pelletization methods. By doing this, it highlights the renewable nature of solid biofuels and their ability to lower greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting their benefits for the environment. Simultaneously, difficulties associated with its application, ranging from administrative worries to land use issues, are examined closely. Turning its attention to liquid biofuels, the chapter tells the story of ethanol, biodiesel, and advanced biofuels. By examining the choice of feedstock, manufacturing procedures, and real-world uses, it highlights the adaptability of liquid biofuels in the energy system. Although they are not without difficulties related to land use, food production, and water use, their ability to function with current infrastructure and their critical role in improving energy security stand out as distinguishing characteristics[3].

Introduction

One of the major problems being faced by cities and towns relate to management of municipal solid waste (MSW). Waste quantities are increasing day by day due to the increasing population and the municipal authorities are not able to upgrade or scale up the facilities required for proper management of such wastes. In many cities and towns, garbage is littered on roads and foot-paths. Citizens are also not accustomed to use the available storage facilities (dust bins) set up by the authorities. At large, lack of organized system of house- to-house collection of waste has created the littering habits. By and large, hardly we can see any city/town complying with the Municipal Solid Wastes (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000 in ‘totality”. As per information provided by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), 1,27,486 TPD (Tons per day) municipal solid waste was generated in the country during 2011-12. Out of which, 89,334 TPD (70%) of MSW is collected and 15,881 TPD (12.45%) is processed or treated.

In spite of various measures taken towards the proper waste collection, segregation and disposal, proper waste processing units were established as per the following details as per CPCB. The waste processing technologies reported in the country are; composting, vermi composting, biogas plant, RDF- pelletisation and others. Some of the sepelletization plants are associated with power plants for generation of electricity. However, mechanical composting and vermi composting are more popular in the country.

3.1. SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

Solid waste management includes the transportation, processing, recycling and disposal of our waste materials. We live in a disposable world in many ways with the modernization and convenience of our world we have cluttered it with our refuse.

Solid wastes are all the wastes arising from human and animal activities, that are normally solid and that are discarded as useless or unwanted materials. It consists of the highly heterogeneous mass of discarded materials from the urban community as well as the more homogenous accumulation of agricultural, industrial and mining waste.

Urbanization, industrialization, and economic growth in India have all led to an increase in the generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) by a number of urban local bodies (ULBs). In cities with high population densities, SWM is a significant difficulty. Being a diverse country with a wide range of religious communities, customs, and traditions like India makes it more challenging to accomplish sustainable development in a country that is rapidly industrialising and improving its standard of living. Although there have been substantial changes in the social, economic, and environmental spheres, India’s SWM systems have mostly remained the same. Currently, 90% of residual waste is thrown in the informal sector rather than properly disposed of. To make SWM more sustainable, new management practises and disposal sites are needed. The inefficiency of the current waste management systems has a detrimental effect on the economy, the environment, and public health. The Ministry of Environment and Forests of India introduced regulations for garbage treatment, although there is irregular and insufficient compliance.

Overview
Humanity has produced trash since the beginning of time, whether it is from the bones and other parts of the animals they kill for food or the wood they harvest to build their carts. As civilization developed, garbage was produced that was increasingly sophisticated in character. The world of consumers emerged around the close of the 19thcentury as a result of the industrial revolution. The production of non-biodegradable solid waste led to an increase in pollution not just in the air but also on Earth itself. The rise in solid waste was also primarily caused by urbanization and population growth.
Definition of Solid Waste
Glass crockery containers, plastic containers, sludge, vehicle parts, and mounds of crop wastes are among the solid waste materials. These gather in public areas and hinder people’s regular activities.
Every family produces waste or rubbish on a daily basis. We usually toss away items that we no longer need or have any use for, which puts them in the garbage category. Depending on where it comes from, solid waste can take several forms. Understanding the proper ways to handle the trash produced has become crucial in today’s dirty world. One crucial technique for managing municipal solid waste is segregation. Representation provides a good understanding of segregation at source. Composting is a crucial waste management and treatment technique.

Solid wastes, the unavoidable consequences of civilization, are the useless and unwanted heterogeneous solid materials discarded by human being. Human greed is the major factor in creation of unwanted solid wastes. With increase in human population and its demands, there is an increase in production of various types of wastes. When human being did not come to the earth there was very little wastes like tree leaves, animal excreta or dead parts which nature used to digest and produces something beautiful every time. Still there are certain remote areas free from wastes where human being could not reach due to inaccessible condition of terrain, forests and islands. Now–a-days wastes are found even in the top of Mt. Everest or in the interior of Antarctica.

India has witnessed a phenomenal increase in foodgrains production since Independence and from a food deficit state producing about 51 million tons in 195051 it become food surplus country with a record harvest of more than 250 million tons in 201112. This particular year also saw a remarkable record production of pulses at about 18.1 million tons. However, to meet the increasing demand of the continuously rising population about 23 million tons of pulses have to be imported every year costing the country about Rs.3000 crores in foreign exchange. Despite the changes in the dietary habits in which the large middle class has moved away from traditional cereals towards high value dairy, meat, fruits and vegetable products, pulses in India are still considered an important source of proteins, particularly for the poor. Pulses are not only an excellent source of protein (2040%), carbohydrates (5060%) and minerals (24%) but also provide calories almost equal to that of cereals energy to the tune of 300 to 540 Kcal/ 100g (Ofuya and Akhidue, 2005). Thus, pulses play an important role in achieving food and nutritional security for small and marginal farmers. However, the per capita availability of pulses has been declining over the time – it has declined from 60.7 gm/ day in 1951 to about 32 gm/day in 2010 – mainly due to stagnant production (except in recent years), rising demand for consumption and other uses. Pulses not only are used for consumption, but also play an even greater role in maintaining and enhancing soil fertility through nitrogen (N₂) fixation. Though the estimates of Nfixed by pulses depends on crop species, soil type, agroclimatic zone and crop management practices, it was reported that early, medium and long duration pigeonpea varieties fix 7, 55 and 69 kg/ ha¹, respectively, in Vertisols of Patancheru (Kumar Rao and Dart, 1987). Pulses ^N2 are grown not only as sole crops but also as intercrops and the biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) of pulses substantially benefits the associated or succeeding crops in terms of nitrogen contribution (1668 kg/ N₂ ha¹ for succeeding cereals). Thus on a conservative estimate, the BNF (@46 kg/N₂ ha¹) by pulses, excluding the intercrop area, alone amounts to 1.06 million tons annually.

North Eastern Himalayan Region comprises mostly of seven states viz. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura (Gill, 2005). This Himalayan Region stands entirely different from the rest of the country not only in language, dress, food habits and festivals but also differs in agricultural practices. Among agricultural practices shifting cultivation locally known as ìJhumî or ìBunî is the most important. According to Ministry of Agriculture, Arunachal Pradesh stands first in the ìJhumî cultivation followed by Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya (Agnihotri, 2003). In Meghalaya, the problem has assumed an epidemic proportion in Gargo hills where tracts of forests are burnt. The farmers of Khasi and Jainta Hills usually practise the ìBunî cultivation.

Crop growth rate (g m^_-2 day^_-1)

Crop Growth Rate is referred to a whole crop, so you need to consider the area of the ground where crop is present. It is measured as mass increase in crop biomass per unit ground area per unit time.
Equation for that is, CGR= W₂-W₁ / t₁-t₂

In nature, microbes are found as a mixed population. The types that encounter the most favourable environmental and other growth conditions emerge in abundance while others that find the environment less favourable are fewer in number. However, for any kind of study on them or for their use as a pure species, they have to be separated from other species. The nutritional media or culture media are different for different species. As the medium is specific for certain species, it checks or restricts the growth of other microbes for which it may not be suitable. However, some growth of and contamination by unwanted species may occur.

In meteorology, we often use some of the physical parameters to explain the physical processes taking place in the atmosphere. These parameters must have already appeared in the earlier chapters. However, these are given in this chapter to enable the readers to get acquainted once again.

Among them Ni is considered as an essential micronutrient. The DTPA is used to extract soil metals by forming chelates with free metals in solution, which lowers their ionic activities so that additional quantities of metal are released from the soil colloids until equilibrium is attained. Triehanolamine (TEA) is used to buffer the extracting solution at pH 7.3 in an attempt to optimize the extraction of various metals. Calcium chloride is included in the extracting solution to minimize dissolution of CaCO₃.

1. Introduction Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), a cereal grain belongs to the grass family (Poaceae), within the subfamily (Panicoidea) and in the tribe (Andropogoneae) (H.J. et al., 2005). It is grown throughout the world in regions with warmer summers and with daytime temperatures often exceeding 90°F (Rai et al., 1999).After wheat, maize, rice, and barley, it is the fifth most significant and nutritious millet in terms of volume. While many varieties of millets are exclusively cultivated for human consumption, sorghum is widely farmed for – food and feed for humans and animals respectively (Awika, 2011). For millions of people in Africa and Asia, sorghum is commonly consumed as a staple.. In West Africa, sorghum is known as dawa, guinea corn, and sorgho while in Sudan, it is referred as durra; in Ethiopia,Eritrea and East Africa, mtama; in southern Africa, kaffircorn, mabele, or amabele; and in the Indian subcontinent, jowar, jonna, cholam, or jola.(Bantilan et al., 2004).

Sorghum is probably originated in Africa. Because of the great diversity of types grown in East Central Africa, in and around Ethiopia and Sudan, it seems probable that it originated in that area (De Condole, 1884).

Abstract

The Directorate of Sorghum Research has explored 9 states for sorghum germplasm during 2000 – 2011. The sorghum landrace collections are mostly named with the village name prefixed to the landrace (ex. tongraligaon maldandi, sultanpur maldandi etc), landraces are also named based on the grain colour (ex. tella jonna, bili jola etc.) and size (ex. moti rabi jowar), ear head compactness (ex. mudda jola), use of the stem, ear head or grain (ex. dagdi, gundu, allur, broom etc.) for varieties utilities. The landraces are being grown by farmers over the years for many reasons. The moli jowar grains are attractive and fetch higher price in the market compared to other released varieties in Madhya Pradesh. Some are used for specific food preparations. The irungu cholam flour is boiled with water to prepare food. The mathappu cholam is used to prepare a jelly like food known as khali in Tamil Nadu. The beed maldandi and bidri from Maharashtra are used to make quality jowar roti. Karnataka’s kodumurugu jola and allina jola are used to make laddu’s and pappads respectively. Broomcorn jowar from Uttarakhand are used for roti, cattle and poultry feed making. The allur jola from Karnataka is used to prepare allu dish during the nagapanchami (festival of snake god). The pachcha jonna from Andhra Pradesh, barmuda local, deshi chari and gudli local from Rajasthan and bendri dagdi and khondya from Maharashtra are very good fodder types. Valsangh maldandi local, Vadgaon dagdi maldandi, tongraligaon maldandi, tongraligaon dagdi, sultanpur local dagdi, sultanpur maldandi, harni jogdi (dagdi), harni jogdi, chungi maldandi, musti local (Maldandi), chungi kuch-kachi, baddi jowar, chakur maldandi from Maharashtra, and sai jonna from Andhra Pradesh are considered by the farmers as drought tolerant landraces. In Andhra Pradesh, Koya’s (tribe) grow konda jonna. Lambada’s used to grow the maghi sorghum landraces extensively in the state. The tribal community mainly uses the accessions as food and some are used for both food & fodder. The accessions collected from the higher elevation and remote forest area is source material for pest & disease resistance. The accession IC 347574 is used as the tribal food. The accession IC 347583 is a guinea race and IC 347585 is a durra-guinea race sorghum collected at an elevation of 500 feet from the tribal village. In Gujarat,Gomati (tribe) grow deshi jonna landraces. In Madhya Pradesh, Rewa district is the maximum deshi jowar cultivation region. This area is commonly called “Junariwala Shetra”. Mehran, Swarguor, and Kushwaha are the main tribes cultivating the jowar in these regions. In Maharashtra, Korukoo’s tribe grows somgi and deshi jonna landraces. They cultivate sorghum with lablab, chillies, cotton, redgram, and tomato at the height of 650 – 870 m from MSL. Maximum diversity of the sorghum still exists in the disturbed forests. Due to extend of its natural variability, India exists as the secondary origin of sorghum.

1.1 Introduction Sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], a cultivated diploid (2n = 20) tropical cereal C4 grass plant, is currently the fifth most important cereal crop grown in the world and the first important crop in Sudan where drought stress is a major productivity-limiting factor since most of the sorghum is grown under rain-fed conditions. It is a monocotyledon plant of tropical origin, belonging to the Poaceae family. Starch, followed by protein, fat, and fibre, makes up the majority of sorghum’s nutritional makeup, which is similar to maize in terms of its nutritional content. Compared to other cereals, including wheat and maize, the crop exhibits comparatively good water use efficiency. Sorghum is a valuable botanical model crop for other tropical grasses with complex genomes that use C4 photosynthesis due to its vast adaption to severe settings, resistance to stress conditions, diverse germplasm collections, and short (710 Mb) genome size. Sorghum, a historically important source of food and a staple crop, is becoming a crop with a variety of applications, including food, fuel, fodder, and a model for the functional genetics and genomics of tropical grasses.

Introduction to Energy Sources

Consumption of nonrenewable energy sources has caused more environmental harm than any other human activity during the last century. Electricity generated from fossil fuels like coal and crude oil has resulted in excessive levels of hazardous gases in the environment. As a result, several issues exist now, such as ozone depletion and global warming. Vehicle pollution has also been a significant issue.

As a result, alternative energy sources have become increasingly vital and relevant in today’s society. These sources, such as the sun and wind, can never be depleted and are hence referred to as renewable. They produce fewer emissions and are readily available locally. Their application has the potential to significantly reduce chemical, radioactive, and thermal pollution. They stand out as a promising source of infinite clean energy. These are also known as non-conventional energy sources.
