11.1 INTRODUCTION

The heavy metals which, by definition, are elements having a density greater than five in their elemental form, comprise some 38 elements. However, the term usually, and here, refers to twelve metals that are used and discharged by industry, i.e. Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sn, Zn. Most of the present discussion will centre on those metals that may represent potential hazards to plants or animals; these are Cd, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn.

The heavy metals are widely distributed in the environment, in soils, in plants and animals and in most of their tissues. The concentrations of individual metals in living tissue are ordinarily very low and must be maintained within narrow limits to permit the optimum biological performance of most organisms. Some heavy metals are essential in trace amounts, namely Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Zn for plants and, in addition, Cr, Ni, Sn for animals; Cd, Hg, and Pb, have not been shown to be essential for either plants or animals. Deficiencies of the essential metals have been frequently reported and substantial benefits have arisen from correcting these by addition to the soil and subsequent transfer from soil to plant is for most increasing concern about the entry into soil of some heavy metals and the possible adverse effects that they might have on plants and animals and, in turn, on human health. The main sources of these heavy metals are: (i) urban industrial aerosols, created by combustion of fuels, metal ore refining and other industrial processes; (ii) liquid and solid wastes from animals and man; (iii) mining wastes; or (iv) industrial and agricultural chemicals. Although in some circumstances there are direct atmospheric inputs to plants, addition to the soil and subsequent transfer from soil to plant is for most heavy metals the major route of entry into the living tissues of plants, animals, and man. The fate of heavy metals added to soils, including their mobility and reactions in the soil and their subsequent uptake and distribution in plants, is therefore of critical importance in relation to man’s health.

9.1 INTRODUCTION

The annual production of organic carbon by photosynthesis on land is about 6x 10¹⁰ tonnes (Table 9.1), most of which eventually decomposes on or in the top 50 cm of the soil. This organic matter can be in lumps as big as a mature oak tree (say 0.5xl0²m³) or as small as a bacterium (0.5 x 10~¹⁸m³). It can be in material as resistant to decay as oil palm nuts, which persist for years in soil in the humid tropics, or as transient as mammalian protein. Yet in the long run, no fraction of the organic matter in plants and animals can withstand decomposition to carbon dioxide and water. If this were not so, any completely resistant fraction would by now cover the surface of the earth. Although under normal conditions organic matter does not accumulate indefinitely in soil, exceptions can occur, as, for example, when a soil becomes permanently waterlogged. When a geologically stable surface has been under the same vegetation for a long time, the soil approaches steady state conditions, with the annual losses of organic matter balancing the annual input. Thereafter the organic matter content of the soil remains constant, until the next vegetational change or geological catastrophe. This process, in which losses and gains proceed simultaneously, is described as turnover and may be defined (for carbon) as ‘the flux of carbon through the organic carbon in a given sample of soil’. Turnover time is then the amount of carbon in the soil system (or part of that system) divided by the annual input of carbon into the system (or part of that system). Turnover and turnover time will be discussed more fully in Section 9.2.5.

Despite their modest means, the family placed immense value on education. Ramswaroop, an Intermediate passout in his youth which was quite an achievement few in the village had accomplished—dreamed of giving his children a brighter future.
Dr. Chauhan’s early years were spent observing the rhythm of village life. The crowing of roosters, the mooing of cows, and the occasional bleat of goats were the background score of his childhood. While other children enjoyed chasing buffaloes or playing in the fields, Dr. Chauhan was different. His deep empathy for animals was evident even as a child, as he often helped his mother care for sick cows or newborn calves. It was during these moments that the seeds of his future profession were sown.

Nestled in the heart of Karnataka, Tumakuru District is renowned for its verdant landscapes dotted with vast expanses of coconut and areca nut plantations. The region’s unique climatic conditions, characterized by a harmonious blend of sunshine and seasonal rains, create an ideal environment for the growth of coconut palms, which have become a staple of both the local economy and the cultural fabric of the community. Historically, coconut trees have not only provided sustenance but have also played a pivotal role in the livelihoods of many families in Tumakuru. The fruit is a key ingredient in various local dishes and is widely utilized in traditional ceremonies and celebrations. However, the task of harvesting coconuts from these towering trees has long been a physically demanding endeavour. Traditionally, skilled climbers would ascend the tall, slender trunks, utilizing their agility and experience to pluck coconuts by hand. This craft, which once flourished, has now seen a decline, making it increasingly challenging for coconut planters to find professionals who can perform this labour-intensive task. The decline in manpower has made it evident that traditional methods are no longer sustainable. If coconut farmers wish to keep pace with growing market demands, a new approach is necessary one that balances traditional harvesting practices with modern technology. Recognizing this need, innovative minds have introduced the “Coconut Tree Climber”, a mechanized device specifically designed to address the challenges faced by coconut planters. The Coconut Tree Climber is a user-friendly and efficient device that significantly simplifies the process of climbing and harvesting. Built with a strong and adjustable mechanism, the device allows a person to securely climb tall coconut trees with minimal physical effort. More importantly, it drastically reduces the risk of accidents, ensuring the safety of the user. Unlike traditional methods that rely solely on human strength, the device takes advantage of mechanical power, enabling planters to harvest coconuts faster, safer, and more efficiently. This innovation has proven to be a game-changer in the coconut farming industry. Not only does it empower farmers to become self-reliant, but it also minimizes their dependence on skilled climbers. 3.1 Overview of the Global Carbon Market in Pre-Kyoto Protocol Phase

At the First COP in Berlin in 1995, the UNFCCC launched a pilot phase of projects to build experience and “learning by doing”. The pilot phase was termed Activities Implemented Jointly (http://unfccc.int/program/coop/aij/aij_np.html). Under the Activities Implemented Jointly, Annex I Parties could implement projects in other countries that reduced emission of greenhouse gases or enhanced removals of sinks. The number of projects registered under Activities Implemented Jointly has been growing since its launch and as of 2002 (the latest report available) there were 157 projects – 45 percent of which are in developing countries. The total amount of money invested by private sector companies as of 2000 was about $160 million. Because of the expectations that sink projects would be included as a mechanism for achieving targets, several pilot projects were voluntarily implemented involving mostly private sector entities (e.g., electric utility companies, oil companies and environmental non-governmental organisations). Between the beginning of 1996 and the end of 2003, 76 transactions involving carbon sequestration in the LULUCF sector were signed, representing 40 million tCO2-e. Relative to all of the carbon transactions that took place over the same period, sink projects accounted for 21 percent of the total number and 23 percent of the total volume. In volume terms, carbon sequestration projects were the single largest project category, and more than three-quarters of this volume was transacted between 1996 and 1999.

The ‘greenhouse effect’ earns its name from the rough similarity between the way it works and the way the glass of a greenhouse works. Glass too, is transparent to short-wave radiation but opaque to long-wave radiation, so the greenhouse traps heat.
Carbon dioxide plays a critical role in controlling the Earth’s climate because as an aerosol it absorbs and reflects or scatters incoming radiation on the one hand and absorbs and reradiates outgoing infrared radiation on the other. This latter phenomenon results in what is popularly called the Greenhouse Effect, an analogy to what happens in a greenhouse.

They achieve this by providing a wide variety of wellness-oriented products and information, which assists in educating and motivating consumers about healthy lifestyle. Additionally, these platforms feature eco-friendly products and promote sustainable practices, aligning the Gen Z’s growing concern for environmental issues. The choice of this topic was inspired by a few things such as health consciousness and sustainable consumption. This interdisciplinary topic combines insights from consumer psychology, digital marketing, and environmental science, offering valuable implications for businesses and policymakers aiming to engage this tech-savvy generation effectively. The focus on this emerging area of research helps fill gaps in existing literature and provides strategic guidance for optimizing digital commerce strategies. Case studies on MyFitnessPal and Nike’s Move to Zero initiative demonstrate how an e-commerce platform can promote health awareness and sustainable consumption among Gen Z. Abstract

Beautiful Earth is the only planet of Solar system which supports life due to presence of water, air and favourable temperature. The surface atmosphere is warmed by absorption of solar ray due to green house effect, without which the average temperature of Earth’s atmosphere would have been –73^ºC and the ocean would have been frozen. Since the year 1850, when industrialization started in many countries, the concentration of different green house gases in the atmosphere have been increased remarkably (CO₂ – 34%, CH₄ – 145%, Fluorocarbons – 100%). Global warming, the increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s near surface air and oceans, is caused mainly due to increase in air pollution, green house gas generation and deforestation. Human activities are found more responsible for rapid global warming in last 50 years. Deadly storms, unbearable heat waves, high day-night temperature, Ice sheet melting in polar regions, glaciers receding at alarming rate, frequent wild fires in forest, coastal areas inundation, drinking water shortage and desertification are the serious impacts of global warming. It is a great concern to the Policy Makers to stop human activities responsible for global warming without jeopardizing technological development of society. Global warming has triggered the complex chain reactions : Increase in surface temperature – reduction in the permafrost and tundra areas.

Abstract

The Western Desert covers approximately 700,000 km², which is more than two-thirds of the total area of Egypt. This immense desert, to the west of the Nile, spans the area from the Mediterranean Sea to the Sudanese border. The Great Sand Sea lies within the desert’s plain and extends from Siwa Oasis to Jilf al Kabir plateau. Scarps and deep depressions exist in several parts of the Western Desert. Limited agricultural production, the presence of some natural resources, and permanent settlements are found in the western desert oases (Siwa, Bahariya, Farafra, Dakhla and Kharga), all of which have fresh groundwater. Siwa Oasis, close to the Libyan border, is isolated from the rest of Egypt but has sustained life since ancient times. The Siwa’s cliff-hung Temple of Amun was renowned for its oracles for more than 1,000 years. Herodotus and Alexander the Great visited the temple in the pre-Christian era. The Oasis is a natural depression about 23 meters below sea level. It covers an area of about 1050 km² (2,50,000 acres); of which only 87.95 km² (20,940 acres) are currently cultivated. The total numbers of inhabitants in Siwa were 21,482 in 2006. The main activity in Siwa oasis is agriculture which depends on the groundwater that outflows from about 1199 wells and springs giving a total annual discharge of about 255 million cubic meters from which, about 222 million cubic meters are lost due to evaporation and evapotranspiration, while the remainder goes to the natural lakes of Siwa Oasis. This has led to a continuous rise in the water table level and soil salinity.

ABSTRACT

Industrial and agricultural activities and the disposal of waste products have resulted in the contamination of many terrestrial environments. Industrial effluents often contain considerable amount of potentially toxic compounds such as Cd, As, Pb and Hg. Due to their small size, which provides a large contact area that can interact with the surrounding environment, microorganisms are the first biota showing the impact of toxic compounds. Microorganisms being in intimate contact with the soil environment are considered to be the best indicators of soil pollution. In general, they are very sensitive to low concentrations of contaminants and provide a rapid response to soil perturbation. Rhizobium spp. are ubiquitous gram-negative soil bacteria that have a profound scientific and agronomic significance due to their ability to establish nitrogen-fixing symbiosis with legumes, which is of major importance to the maintenance of soil fertility and to feed livestock and populations in many developing countries. Therefore, the present work aimed to evaluate the impact of heavy metals on Rhizobium populations isolated from different locations contaminated with heavy metals. In order to reach this goal some physicochemical parameters that influence metal bioavailability were determined, as well as their concentrations in soil. Cadmium tolerance of Rhizobium isolates was screened in artificial media and the highest cadmium concentration allowing growth was defined as the maximum resistance level (MRL). The heavy metal tolerance variability found among Rhizobium isolates, suggests that beyond basic metabolic machinery also exist variations that allow isolates to display distinct tolerance responses to Cd stress. To better understand Rhizobium cadmium tolerance, wall-bound and intracellular Cd was determined. Sensitive and moderately tolerant isolates showed low intracellular Cd amounts when compared to extremely tolerant isolates, which were able to withstand intracellular Cd concentrations 40 times higher. Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) bind cations unspecifically, so they constitute the initial defence mechanism to heavy metals since they sequestrate cations and therefore prevent their entry into the cell. LPS quantity varied significantly between isolates. LPS increases were observed in most sensitive, moderately tolerant and tolerant isolates, evidencing an attempt of cells to adjust to cadmium entry. These results may be of great importance for understanding how Rhizobium persists in contaminated soils. They also provide important data to the development of bioremediation processes and to the improvement of soil productivity.

2.1 Geological and accelerated erosion

Erosion has always taken place, and always will. The surface of the earth is constantly changing, with mountains rising, valleys being cut deeper and wider, the coast line receding here and advancing there. The physical pattern of the surface of the earth which we see today is not the result of some single cataclysmic sculpturing but the result of changes so infinitely slow that only after centuries is the effect noticeable. Erosion is simply one of the aspects of the constant process of change. It is fundamental to the formation of alluvial soils and sedimentary rocks. Man’s activities seldom slow down or halt the process but frequently speed it up. We usually refer to geological erosion or normal erosion, or natural erosion when we mean that which results only from the forces of nature, and to accelerated erosion when the process is influenced by man.

When trying to predict the probable severity of man-made erosion it helps to consider the rate of geological erosion. If the conditions of climate and topography are such that geological erosion is quicker than usual, then these sameronditions will also lead to particularly severe accelerated erosion. Extreme examples of both kinds of erosion are shown in plates 2.1 and 2.2.

Since the last decade discussion regarding ecology is being heard. A campaign with a great planning has launched by holding seminar conferences and meets. The ecological problem became a matter of tremendous panic and anxiety. Not only in India but also in entire world this problem is being discussed through all school, colleges and universities on international scale all over world, since it became universal issue now a days. The word ecology was not known to the people 20 years ago, never the less it became familiar even among the villages today. The people in villages are making thorough study of the subject. The experts of ecology from all over the world have been surprised to learn the exhaustive study of the same done by the Indian scholars. We have instituted a separate ministry to look after the environmental problems. The activities injurious to environment are prohibited. An act is there to restrict antienvironmental deeds what made scientists all over the world to take this matter so seriously. Does it mean that the very existence of mankind has been jeopardized by it Let us see what our ancient literature say about the ecology and pollution.

Introduction

Plant paprasitic nematodes are one of the limiting factors in the production of horticultural crops in the country. The visible symptoms of nematode attack are: Reduced individual plant growth, varying degrees of chlorosis, wilting of the foliage and sometimes death of the plants.

The roots, damaged by nematodes are not efficient in the utilization of available moisture and nutrients in soil resulting in reduced functional metabolism. Nematode infested roots are easily infected by various pathogenic fungi and bacteria and aggrevate root damage. These deleterious effects on plant growth result in reduced yield and poor quality of crops as in citrus, banana, grapevine, pineapple, papaya and vegetable crops. Decline or death of highly prised ornamentals and turf is often the result of nematode infestation.

4.1 THE NURSERY
We distinguish several types of nurseries among which we have Permanent nursery and Temporal or Seasonal nursery.
4.1.1 Permanent nursery
Permanent nursery is a large nursery destined to produce large number of plants for several years or in other words, the place is used for several years even if the plantation center is far. It is also called the central or industrial nursery. For example, the Cameroon Development Corporation [CDC] with head quarter in Limbe has its central nursery in Bota – Limbe. Here oil palm seedlings are being transported from the nursery in Limbe to the Bomboko area in Idenau Subdivision and Illoani in Ndian Division. A special management practices is being carried out in this type of nursery notably:
• Access road for vehicles accessible in all seasons ;

ABSTRACT

Satellite-based hyperspectral imaging became areality in November 2000 with the successful launch and operation of the Hyperion system on board the EO-1 platform. Hyperion is a push broom imager with 220 spectral bands in the 400-2500 nm wavelength range, a 30 meter pixel size and a 7.5 km swath. Prelaunch characterization of Hyperion measured low signal to noise (SNR<40:1) for the geologically significant shortwave infrared (SWIR) wavelength region (2000- 2500 nm). The impact of this low SNR on Hyperion's capacity to resolve spectral detail is studied for the Musiri and Tattayyangarpettai regions of part of Namakkal and Tiruchirapalli districts of Tamil Nadu state, India which comprises a diverse range of minerals with narrow, diagnostic absorption bands in the SWIR. Following radiative transfer correction of the Hyperion radiance at sensor data to surface radiance (apparent reflectance), diagnostic spectral signatures were clearly apparent including: green vegetation; talc; dolomite; crystalline limestone, chlorite; white mica and sericite. Though the derived surface composition maps generated from these image endmembers were noisy (both random and column), the spatially coherent and correlated well with the known geology. The interpreted and processed mineral map is given below. In addition, the Hyperion data were used to measure and map spectral shifts of <10 nm in the SWIR related to white mica chemical variations.

Abstract

Satellite photographs depict exciting evidence on the migratory melodrama of river systems. A study has been conduced in parts of Tamil Nadu using IRS-IA Satellite pictures, archaeology and Tamil literature, which reveals that from Pleistocene to 2700 years B.P.(Before Present) the river Cauvery flowed in a northeasterly direction from the Stanley reservoir via Chinnar, Palakkodu, Mattur, Tiruppathur (Tiruppattur), Gudiyatham (Gudiyattam), Vellore and Walajapet to meet the sea at Madras. From 2700 to 2300 years B.P., it flowed via Uttangarai and Tirukkovilur to meet the bay of Bengal near Pondicherry, over which the present-day Ponnaiyar is a misfit stream . From 2300 to 1300 year B.P. it has flowed via Erode, Tirukkampuliyur, Alagarai , Tiruchy, Kiranur and Pudukkottai meeting the sea in the region where the present-day Agniar and Ambuliar meet the sea. Subsequently, between 1600 and 1300 years B.P., the Cauvery flowed along the present-day tracts of the Vennar and Vettar, after which it seems to have flowed as the Kodamurutti, Arasalar and PalanCauvery from 1300 to 1000 years B.P. From about 900 years B.P. it flowed via Tirupurampayam (Tirupurambiyam), Achalpuram till around 750 years B.P. and then it is stabilised as the Colleroon (Kollidam). Such periods and phases of river migration as well as their implications in the search for archaeological remains are discussed in this paper.

3.1 Physical characteristics

There is obviously an association between the amount of rainfall and the amount of soil erosion, i.e. more rain goes with more erosion, and less rain with less erosion, but in statistical terms the correlation between the two is poor. The same total quantity of rain can on different occasions result in widely differing amounts of erosion, and so other more specific measures are required to describe the ability of rainfall to cause erosion. In this chapter we shall establish the known facts about the main physical properties of rainfall, and then in chapter 4 show how these properties are related to the erosive power of rainfall.

3.1.1 Quantity of rainfall

Any measure of rainfall amount is a sample, and so associated with the inevitable problems of sampling, namely, ⁴is the sample representative of the whole?’ and ‘is the sample measured accurately?’ On both counts the data of rainfall which are usually available are of very doubtful reliability. Considering firstly the size of the sample measured, a very intensive network of rain gauges such as that established in an experimental catchment might be as dense as one gauge per 25 hectares, but this corresponds (with a 125 mm diameter gauge) to a sample of about one in 20 million, which would for any other scientific measurement be considered totally inadequate. The density of gauges in a country which considers itself very well provided might be one gauge per 25 square kilometres - a sample of one in 2 000 million, and in an undeveloped country the density of one gauge per 2 500 square kilometres is a sample of 1 in 200 000 000 000! Secondly, the siting of this remarkably small number of gauges is usually arranged primarily on convenience, eg where they can be easily read and contained, with little or no consideration of whether the site is representative of the whole. Thirdly, the accuracy of the measurement is usually unknown and studies have shown that variations in the shape and size of the instrument, and in the height at which it is mounted, and the way it is shielded from the wind, can seriously affect the recorded amount of rainfall. Clearly, even the apparently straightforward question of how much rain falls is not answered as precisely as might be imagined from a survey of rainfall tables and maps.

Abstract

Drought and salinity are two major abiotic stresses that affect various aspects of human lives of one third world population including human health and agricultural productivity. Abiotic stresses such as salinity, drought, nutrient deficiency or toxicity, and flooding limit crop productivity world-wide. A living organism is considered resistant if it tolerates a given physicochemical stress. The presence of microorganisms within the soil, specially a main group known as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), is a key factor in the adaptation of plants to the different ecosystems. The AMF colonizing within the plant roots can determine the success of plants in salt- and/or drought-affected areas. The symbiosis with AMF has been proposed as one of the mechanisms of salinity and water stress avoidance. Studies have shown greater drought and salinity tolerance in AMF-colonized plants by a number of mechanisms. These mechanisms include enhanced water and nutrient uptake directly by extraradical hyphae, higher leaf stomatal conductance and/or better root system architecture, higher capacity of osmotic adjustment and antioxidant defense systems, better soil structure due to higher glomalin and over expression of genes encoding antioxidant enzymes.

Textural assessment has long been used to indicate quality in agricultural soil and although it contains an element of subjective judgement, a skilled surveyor can differentiate many grades of texture. Soil texture correlates with the distribution of particle size in the soil, though this is not the only component in texture. Although particle size distribution is an objective attribute of soils and can, in principle, be measured with accuracy, the determination is in practice quite difficult and certainly laborious, so that it is customary in soil mechanical analysis to divide the soil into several broad fractions: sand, silt and clay are the principal categories. The clay fraction, which comprises the smallest particles in the soil, is generally defined as the fraction smaller than a nominal diameter of 2 jam. Food is the prime necessity of the life without which the existence of the human being may be perhaps dubious. India is agriculture predominant country where majority of its population depends on agriculture directly or indirectly. Agriculture plays a vital role in India’s economy. About 54.60 per cent of the total workforce is engaged in agriculture and allied sector activities (Census, 2011). Agriculture and Allied sector accounts for about 18.4 per cent of India’s GVA at current prices during 2022-23. Given the importance of the agriculture sector, Government of India has taken several steps for its development in a sustainable manner (Agriwelfare.gov.in/en/Dept). India with massive network of about 63 State Agricultural Universities (SAUs), three Central Agricultural Universities (CAUs), four deemed universities and four central universities with agricultural faculty along with Indian Council of Agricultural Research accords due priority to the agricultural education, research and extension (ICAR Annual report, 2023-24). The role of these universities & ICAR in addressing the farm related problems cannot be overlooked. As per the All India report on Agriculture Census, 2015-16, India is a country with majority of the farmers being small (17.60 %) and marginal (68.50 %). Agriculture is very diversified with varied agro-climatic conditions which require different practices and strategies to perform. The role of agricultural research and extension in achieving food self-sufficiency is immense. Agriculture is a state subject and various players make agriculture profitable and farming a viable option. But the data indicates that, there is scarcity of extension officers at various levels in India. As per the report of the Committee on Doubling Farmers’ Income, 2017 (Volume XI “Empowering the Farmers 214 Innovations of University Extension in Indian Agriculture through Extension and Knowledge Dissemination”) reported that, the ratio of Extension Service Provider (ESP) to operational farm holdings is around 1: 1156. Coupled with this, the system has mainly focused on the input supply chain and crop cultivation activities. In the era of 21st century, innovation is the buzz word, and pervading in all spheres of life. It is astonishing to know that, todays discoveries are outdated tomorrow. In today’s rapidly changing world, innovation is crucial for organizations and societies to adapt, grow, and maintain a competitive edge. It drives economic development, addresses complex challenges, and improves the quality of life. Over the years, agriculture sector has also seen rapid changes in all aspects, and India’s efforts in this development pursuit are quite inspiring. Starting from food deficit nation to the nation with surplus food production, the role of agricultural research and extension viz a viz., innovation cannot be overlooked. As a result of bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in the year 2014, the Professor Jayashankar Telangana Agricultural University was established on 03-09-2014 by an act of legislature. Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSAU) named in honour and memory of Professor Jayashankar, an eminent educationist and an ardent Telangana ideologue is the only Farm University of Telangana State. PJTAU has eleven constituent colleges with eight of those devoted to faculty of Agriculture, two to faculty of Agricultural Engineering and Technology and one to faculty of Community Science. In addition, there are twelve constituent polytechnics (eleven in Agriculture and Agricultural Engineering). The research component in the agriculture is addressed by Sixteen Agricultural Research Stations, including three Regional Agricultural Research Stations. 8.1 INTRODUCTION

The development of a soil profile involves the mobilization of major and minor elements and their subsequent deposition elsewhere in the profile or removal in the drainage water. For a full understanding of these processes we need to know what are the forms and reactivities of the soil constituents, the nature and mode of action of the mobilizing agents, the forms in which the mobilized material is transported—whether colloidal or in true solution, whether in ionic or complex form, whether alone or in association with other soil constituents—as well as its stability towards oxidation and reduction, microbial action, pH, and sorption and coprecipitation. The availability of micronutrients to plants is presumably governed by factors such as these. The current concern with problems of soil contamination has brought to the attention of soil chemists numerous toxic metals that were previously regarded as essentially the province of the geochemist.

It is probably true to say that no one of the factors listed above can be considered in isolation, but so far as any one factor is of dominant importance, this is nature of the mobilizing species; this determines the form in which the metal is transported, and its ultimate fate in the soil or in the drainage water.

This chapter is an attempt to summarize our present knowledge of the processes responsible for the mobilization and immobilization of metals in soils.

Increasing pressure on freshwater resources has created interest in the use of saline water for agricultural production, particularly where high-quality irrigation water is limited. This chapter examines the management possibilities associated with using saline water while addressing the risks of salinity to soil and crops. It focuses on the role of selected nutrients and soil amendments in improving crop performance under saline conditions. The roles of potassium and phosphorus are discussed in relation to plant nutrition and tolerance to salinity. Zinc is also considered for its importance in maintaining plant nutritional balance under saline conditions. The chapter further examines gypsum as an amendment and its role in managing saline soil conditions. Organic matter is discussed for its contribution to soil physical, chemical and biological properties, while biofertilizers are considered as a component of management under saline environments. The integrated use of nutrients, amendments, organic materials and biological inputs provides approaches for improving the productivity of saline soils. The chapter therefore links saline-water use with appropriate soil and nutrient management for sustainable crop production

In January 2016, a global team was invited by the office of Prime Minister of India to discuss and prepare an approach paper on Agro-ecology ( or Eco Agriculture including Organic farming). The team consisted of J. Fagan, Hans Harren, M.H. Mehta and A. Thimmaiah who after intensive discussions had prepared several presentations – first given to the group of top officials of Government of India departments and institutions as organized through the office of the prime minister. This was later followed by a meeting with Prime Minister Modi. During this meeting, the clear question asked was, “You need not convince us that agro ecology and organic farming are the way forward, but the question is how? How do we expand this system to national scale ?”

There is no terminal of any kind of research, rather they presence a static snap of the gamut of ecological dynamics and functions.

For instance, Assam, India, faces rising temperatures and frequent floods, threatening 86% of its agriculture-dependent rural population. Similarly, Bangladesh, a climate change hotspot, grapples with salinization and cyclones that disrupt rural livelihoods. Regional collaboration offers a pathway to pool resources, share expertise, and develop scalable solutions. As the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia highlights, collaborative action enhances food and water security through shared knowledge

It was in April-May 1968 that the country witnessed the wonderful spectacle of large arrivals of wheat grain in the mandis of the Punjab like Moga and Khanna. Wheat production in the country rose to nearly 17 million tonnes that year, from the previous best harvest of 12 million tonnes. Indira Gandhi released a special stamp titled “Wheat Revolution” in July 1968, to mark this new phase in our agricultural evolution. The nation rejoiced at our coming out of a “ship to mouth” existence. Later in 1968, Dr. William Gaud of the U.S. referred to the quantum jumps in production brought about by semi-dwarf varieties of wheat and rice as a “Green Revolution.” This term has since come to symbolise a steep rise in productivity and, thereby, of production of major crops.

Wheat production this year may reach a level of 85 million tonnes, in contrast to the 7 million tonnes our farmers harvested at the time of Independence in 1947. I visited several grain mandis in Moga, Khanna, Khananon and other places in the Punjab in April 2011 and experienced concurrently a feeling of ecstasy and agony. It was heart-warming to see the great work done by our farm men and women under difficult circumstances when, often, they had to irrigate the fields at night due to lack of availability of power during the day.

Introduction

A thematic layer is defined as a layer with a set of logical feature data placed under single theme such as soil type, pH level, salinity, and water table. The features in these layers determine real world objects and are created using geometries such as points, lines and polygons (Tickoo 2017). Thematic layering is the spatial representation of analyzed data of elements that belong to the same type. Thematic maps are used to create these layers, which show how one or more specific data themes vary across different geographic areas.

Maps make it easier to interpret and communicate the results of any GIS analysis. R has a large number of packages for making thematic maps. Static mapping is straightforward with plot()methods provided by core spatial packages sf and raster. The use of plot() function have been discussed in the previous chapters. Another package for mapping isspwithspplot() having enough options for producing good quality thematic maps.It is also possible to create advanced maps using ggplot2. This chapter discusses, separately, preparing thematic maps from vectors and rasters with the above mentioned packages. A dedicated map-making package tmaphas been given special focus in this chapter.

In India, the recognition of life insurance is prevalent, but with the increase in literacy and financial awareness, a growing number of individuals and families are starting to grasp the importance of health insurance (Kumar & Duggirala, 2021). Following this cause, the third goal of sustainable development that highlights the significance of ensuring and promoting healthy lives is worth mentioningtowards the effort of massification of the health insurance. By integrating finance, the third Sustainable Development Goal emphasizes a crucial initiative aimed at achieving universal health coverage for every citizen, which encompasses state health insurance for all individuals(Pauly, 1994). This initiative aims to equip citizens with the financial resilience needed to navigate an uncertain future, particularly concerning health-related challenges. In the context of health insurance frameworks, understanding the accessibility of initiatives aimed at the bottom of the pyramid is crucial for realizing universal health coverage towards achieving the SDGs’ (Pablos-Mendez, Cavanaugh, & Ly, 2016). The effectiveness of accessibility is intricately linked to the level of awareness that exists within the community. As the landscape of health insurance is ever-dynamic, understanding its intricacies will be crucial moving forward.For a thorough exploration, a researcher should have a wide-ranging grasp of the discipline, including theoretical, contextual, and methodological perspectives. Taking this into consideration, present chapter aims to explore a theoretical aspect of the review through a bibliometric analysis (Faruk, Rahman, Heliyon, & 2021, n.d.) of the literature spanning from 1984 to 2024 (Lebek, Uffen, Neumann, Hohler, & Breitner, 2014). This theoretical perspective will guide us in exploring how to reflect on the answers effectively. Theories illustrate methods for examining and establishing a structure for comprehending occurrences (Mahajan, n.d.). Furthermore, the theory clarifies how phenomena connect with the practical world, providing a distinct path and perspective for the researcher. This upcoming section will outline the reasoning behind this study, which entails performing a bibliometric analysis of the literature through the PRISMA Protocol (Moher et al., 2009), succeeded by a comprehensive text analysis of the chosen literature. The next section provides a concise overview of the theories explored within the realm of health insurance literature. This review adopts the PRISMA protocol (Moher et al., 2009) to scrutinize the articles to be included in the review. The protocol involves two phases of scrutinization, which consist of identification and screening. In the identification phase, I selected the Scopus register (Malanski, Dedieu, & Schiavi, 2021) and collected a database of 16797 articles. I gathered this database based on the “Article titles” criterion, including the keywords “Health Insurance” or “Health” and “Insurance” from 1984 to 2024, encompassing 50 years of literature. The year selection provides a timeline of the 50 years of academic scholarship related to the subset of health insurance as a research topic. After applying the language filter of English, duplication, and automation tools to this dataset, I were able to obtain 10961 articles for the subsequent screening stage. In this stage of screening, I have used the filter of subject area by selecting the subject area of Social Sciences; Business, Management, and Accounting; Decision Science; Economics, Econometrics, and Finance, which leads the collection of the 2580

The last century has witnessed a global change in agricultural practices. From high dependency on external input agriculture, the world is now shifting towards low external input sustainable agriculture (LEISA). The history of dustbowl devastation in 1930s in America has put agricultural practices, tillage in particular, to question (Friedrich et al., 2012). Traditionally, tillage was believed to be a primary farm operation for preparing a good seedbed, nutrient mobilization, weed management, moisture availability, crop residue incorporation (Hobbs et al., 2008), thereby improving the overall soil health with increased production (Farooq et al., 2011a). The dust bowl devastation of 1930s gave rise to the concept of protecting soil by reducing tillage operation and maintaining ground cover, popularized as conservation tillage (Friedrich et al., 2012). Economic and ecological sufferings caused by the disastrous droughts in USA during 1930s drove the shift towards conservation agriculture (CA) (Haggblade and Tembo, 2003).

Arsenic contamination of groundwater is a form of groundwater pollution that is often due to naturally occurring high concentrations of arsenic in deeper levels of groundwater. The Ganges Delta’s usage of deep tube wells for water delivery has raised awareness of the issue because it has led to widespread arsenic poisoning in significant numbers of people. During the weathering of rocks and minerals, which is followed by subsequent leaching and runoff, arsenic (As) is released into the soil and groundwater. Additionally, anthropogenic sources can transfer it into the soil and groundwater. Six West Bengal districts with a combined area of 34000 km2 and a population of 30 million have been determined to have groundwater levels of arsenic over the WHO maximum allowable limit of 0.05 mg l1. (Alam et al.,2002)

At present, 37 administrative blocks by the side of the river Ganga and adjoining areas are affected. Areas affected by arsenic contamination in groundwater are all located in the upper delta plain and are mostly in the abandoned meander belt. More than 800 000 people from 312 villages/wards are drinking arsenic-contaminated water and amongst them, at least 175 000 people show arsenical skin lesions. Thousands of tube well water in these six districts have been analysed for arsenic species. Hair, nails, scales, urine, and liver tissue analyses show elevated concentrations of arsenic in people drinking arsenic-contaminated water for a longer period. Arsenic comes from a geological source. Only a few soil strata have high arsenic contents, which are determined to be linked to iron-pyrites according to investigations of bore hole silt. Arsenical skin lesions in various areas cause a variety of societal issues. (Das et al.,1996)

This chapter focuses on key terms and their associated concepts that are crucial for effectively communicating the ideas of the study. It also establishes a theoretical orientation for the empirical investigation and provides guidance for selecting appropriate predictor variables that are relevant to the research.

The scholastic and theoretical exercise referred to in the statement related to the intellectual and academic process involved in conducting research. It involves delving into existing literature, theories, and concepts related to the research topic, as well as formulating new ideas and theories based on the researcher’s understanding and analysis.

One of the key outcomes of this exercise is the development of an operational definition. An operational definition is a clear and concise description of how a specific concept or variable will be measured or observed in the research study. It provides a framework for understanding and interpreting the data collected during the research process.

Furthermore, the pursuit of knowledge is an essential aspect of the research process. Researchers engage in a systematic exploration and investigation of the research topic, seeking to expand the existing knowledge base and contribute new insights to the field. This pursuit of knowledge involves critically analyzing existing theories, synthesizing information, and generating new ideas and theories through the research process. The theory that is developed as a result of this exercise is constructed in alignment with the set of objectives and research designs established at the beginning of the research project. The theory serves as a framework that guides the research process and helps to organize and interpret the data collected. It is important for the theory to be congruent with the research objectives to ensure the research study is focused and relevant to its intended goals.

3. Contemporary Crisis in Global Agriculture
Over the past century, bunch of initiatives have been taken and achieved worldwide in expediting human welfare. Societies have also changed to great extent as a result of quantum leaps in technology, rapid globalization, and innovations in agricultural production systems. Perhaps the world ‘free of fear and want’ envisioned at the foundation programme of the United Nations is still a far cry.
Similarly, much work left to be fulfilled the vision of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and to make ‘a world free of hunger and malnutrition and one in which food and agriculture contribute to improving the living standards of all, especially the poorest, in an economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable manner’.
Amidst great plenty, millions of people still face pervasive poverty, inequalities, joblessness, natural resource depletion, environmental degradation, displacement, migration, disease, and deprivation. Majority of humanity’s progress has reached at a significant cost to the environment. The impacts of climate change are already being felt, and if left unabated; definitely will intensify to a considerable extent in the years coming. Besides, population dynamics will radically change demographics over the decades ahead. Growth in the world’s population is projected to be concentrated in Africa and South Asia and in the biggest cities.
Then agricultural production has to maintain pace with those of rising population for atleast a sustainable world. Although, agricultural production more than tripled between the years of 1960 and 2015, where Green Revolution owes to robust crop production and a significant increment in the use of land, water and other natural resources for agricultural purposes. This period witnessed a remarkable progress in both of industrialization and globalization of food and agriculture. At the same time changes in the length of food supply chains took place as the physical distance from farm to plate has increased dramatically; the consumption pattern of processed, packaged, and prepared foods has changed simultaneously in everywhere though the most in rural communities.
