The practical schedule to be implemented as per the syllabus prescribed for the course is reorganized in a logical sequence. 14.1.2 How it Works
• Temperature Rise: When the temperature rises, the alcohol in the bulb expands, pushing the mercury up the arm on the maximum temperature side. The mercury pushes the index upwards, and this index stays at the highest point reached as the mercury falls back down with decreasing temperature.
• Temperature Fall: When the temperature falls, the alcohol in the bulb contracts, pulling the mercury down on the minimum temperature side (and thus up on the maximum side). The mercury on the minimum side pushes its index upwards. As the temperature rises again, the mercury retreats, leaving the minimum temperature index at the lowest point reached.
• Reading the Thermometer: To read the maximum temperature, you look at the lower end of the index on the maximum temperature scale. To read the minimum temperature, you look at the lower end of the index on the minimum temperature scale. The current temperature can be read from either side by noting the position of the top of the mercury column.
• Resetting the Thermometer: After taking the readings, the indices need to be reset. This is typically done using a small magnet to pull the steel indices back down to the current level of the mercury.

Geography is essential for understanding the spatial dynamics of fisheries, including:
• Habitat mapping: Identifying and mapping fish habitats, such as coral reefs, estuaries, and wetlands, is crucial for managing fisheries sustainably.
• Fish migration patterns: Understanding the migration patterns of fish populations helps researchers and managers develop effective conservation and management strategies.

The ability to anticipate future atmospheric conditions, a practice we know as weather forecasting, is therefore not merely an academic pursuit but a practical necessity (Fig. 11.1). This chapter will look into the fascinating world of weather forecasting, exploring its historical roots, the fundamental scientific principles that underpin it, and the sophisticated tools and techniques employed by modern meteorologists. We will journey through the process of observing the current state of the atmosphere, the computational power used to model its complex dynamics, and the various ways forecasts are disseminated and interpreted. Understanding the science behind weather forecasting empowers us to appreciate its capabilities and limitations. As you deepen your understanding of aquatic ecosystems, it’s essential to recognize that the ocean and its inhabitants are not isolated entities. They are intricately linked with the atmosphere above. This chapter focuses on a fascinating and directly relevant atmospheric phenomenon for coastal environments: land and sea breezes (Fig. 9.1).
These aren’t just pleasant onshore or offshore flows of air. Land and sea breezes represent a daily cycle of wind patterns driven by the fundamental difference in how land and water absorb and release heat. This seemingly simple process has far-reaching consequences for the nearshore marine environment, influencing everything from the subtle shifts in water temperature and salinity to the crucial distribution of nutrients that underpin the entire marine food web.
For those of you who will be involved in the intricate world of aquaculture, the art and science of fishing, or the vital task of managing our precious marine resources, understanding the dynamics of land and sea breezes will provide you with a powerful lens through which to interpret the daily and localized changes within coastal aquatic ecosystems. This knowledge can inform decisions about optimal fishing times, the placement of aquaculture farms, and the potential impacts of environmental changes.

Imagine the air around us. Even though we can’t see it, air has weight. Atmospheric pressure is essentially the force exerted by the weight of the air molecules above a particular point on the Earth’s surface. Think of it like this: Imagine you’re at the bottom of a swimming pool. The water above you presses down, and you feel that pressure. Similarly, the atmosphere, a giant ocean of air, has layers of air molecules, and their weight presses down on everything below, including us.
• Definition: Atmospheric pressure is defined as the force per unit area exerted by the weight of the air column extending from the surface of the earth to the top of the atmosphere above that area (Fig.8.1).
• How to Explain It Simply
• Air has weight: Just like water or a pile of books, the air surrounding the Earth has mass, and thus, weight due to gravity.
• Weight creates pressure: This weight of the air presses down on the surface. The more air there is above a certain point, the greater the pressure.
• Like a stack: Imagine a stack of blankets. The blanket at the bottom has to support the weight of all the blankets above it, so it experiences more pressure. Similarly, the air at lower altitudes has the weight of all the air above pressing down on it.

Rainfall in India, is a phenomenon that is not just a meteorological event but the very lifeline of the subcontinent, profoundly shaping its landscapes, agriculture, and, most importantly for our study, its diverse aquatic ecosystems and the fisheries they support. India experiences a unique and dominant rainfall regime driven primarily by the monsoon, a seasonal reversal of wind patterns. The arrival, intensity, duration, and spatial distribution of this rainfall have farreaching consequences for the availability of freshwater, the health of rivers, lakes, and wetlands, and the productivity of coastal and marine environments. For aspiring fisheries professionals in India, a thorough understanding of the patterns and vagaries of Indian rainfall is indispensable.
Consider the sheer diversity of aquatic habitats across India, from the snowfed rivers of the Himalayas to the monsoonal wetlands of the Gangetic plains, the brackish backwaters of Kerala, and the vast coastline. The characteristics and productivity of each of these systems are intricately linked to the patterns of rainfall they receive. The monsoon replenishes rivers and groundwater, sustains agricultural practices that can impact water quality, influences the nutrient flow into coastal waters, and can even trigger crucial life cycle events for many aquatic species (Fig. 7.1).

Precipitation is a vital component of the Earth’s water cycle, playing a crucial role in shaping our climate, weather, and ecosystems. It occurs when water vapor in the atmosphere condenses and falls to the ground as rain, snow, sleet, or hail. Precipitation is a key driver of weather patterns, influencing everything from local weather events to global climate trends.
In this chapter, we will explore the various forms of precipitation, including rain, snow, sleet, and hail, and examine the factors that influence their formation and distribution. We will also discuss the importance of precipitation in sustaining life on Earth, from supporting plant growth and agriculture to shaping landscapes and ecosystems. The key topics are:

This chapter, “Cloud Formation and Classification,” will embark on a journey to understand the fascinating processes that lead to their creation and the systematic ways in which they are categorized. The essential ingredients for cloud formation are the presence of water vapor in the atmosphere, the availability of condensation or ice nuclei, and the crucial mechanism of air cooling. Clouds are visible masses of tiny water droplets or ice crystals suspended in the Earth’s atmosphere. These droplets or crystals are so small and light that

For fisheries and aquaculture students, comprehending the dynamics of temperature in both the atmosphere and the water is absolutely crucial. In meteorology , temperature means the temperature of air unless it is mentioned otherwise. Think about the last time you felt the coolness of a mountain stream or the warmth of a shallow pond under the summer sun. These temperature differences are not just sensory experiences; they are critical environmental cues and constraints for fish and other aquatic organisms. Temperature directly affects their metabolic rates, oxygen requirements, growth, reproduction, and even their geographical distribution.
This chapter will delve into the concept of temperature from a meteorological perspective, bridging the gap between atmospheric conditions and their direct impact on the thermal regimes of aquatic habitats. We will explore:
• What temperature is and how it is measured in the context of both air and water.
• The primary drivers of temperature variations, including solar radiation (insolation), the Earth’s surface properties, and the movement of air and water masses.

Insolation is a term that might sound abstract but is fundamentally the driving force behind nearly all physical processes on Earth, including those within our precious aquatic environments. In this chapter, we will unravel the journey of solar energy from the vast expanse of space to the surfaces of our oceans, lakes, and rivers, and understand its profound influence on the life within. For you, as future professionals in fisheries and aquaculture, grasping the concept of insolation is paramount. The amount of solar radiation reaching a water body dictates its surface temperature, influences the rate of photosynthesis by aquatic plants and algae (the base of many aquatic food webs), affects water stratification, and even plays a role in phenomena like ice formation and melting. Think about it: the warmth of a lake on a sunny day, the intensity of light penetrating the surface waters, the seasonal changes in algal blooms – all are directly linked to the amount and intensity of solar radiation received. Understanding insolation allows us to begin to explain why some aquatic environments are more productive than others, why water temperatures vary geographically and seasonally, and how changes in solar energy input (whether natural or human-induced) can ripple through entire aquatic ecosystems.

For too long, the study of fisheries has sometimes been perceived as largely focused on the biology and ecology within the water itself. While these aspects are undeniably vital, the reality is that aquatic environments are not isolated entities. They are inextricably linked to the atmosphere above and the land surrounding them. The weather patterns we experience daily – from sunshine and rainfall to storms and temperature fluctuations – directly impact the physical and chemical characteristics of our oceans, lakes, and rivers. Similarly, the geographical landscape, including topography, soil composition, and coastal features, plays a critical role in shaping these aquatic habitats. Consider for a moment the seemingly simple act of rain. Rainfall over land influences river discharge, bringing nutrients and sediments into freshwater and coastal systems. Changes in salinity, turbidity, and nutrient levels can dramatically alter the suitability of these waters for different fish species. Strong winds can drive ocean currents, upwelling events that bring nutrientrich deep waters to the surface, and the dispersal of fish larvae. Extreme weather events like cyclones and floods can cause devastating impacts on both wild and aquaculture-based fisheries. Furthermore, the broader geographical context dictates the regional climate, influencing long-term patterns of water temperature, precipitation, and wind. These climatic conditions, in turn, determine the types of aquatic ecosystems that can thrive in a particular area and the species that inhabit them.5 Understanding these geographical controls is essential for predicting the potential and limitations of fisheries in different regions.

While evaluating Indian Journals of Agricultural and Allied Sciences, comprehensive and inclusive databases with many characteristics listed below should be adopted so as to ensure equal focus and benefit from international exposure:
• The database should have regional and multi-lingual journals with proper translation or abstracting, interdisciplinary research output, more and new journals/technical reports/official scientific documents/conference proceedings etc, open access for smaller journals to ensure readily accessible cutting-edge research in agriculture
• The database should provide more nuanced metrics that value realistic impact and localized research contributions considering immediate practical applications
• The database should include a wide range of journals across diverse disciplines, including agriculture, forestry, veterinary sciences, and environmental science with more inclusion of regional and specialized journals, providing access to a broader spectrum of agricultural research
• The database should emphasis on journals from developing regions, which often publish research addressing local agricultural challenges. This diversity helps in showcasing research contributions from regions/countries with significant agricultural economies

The rating of agricultural journals requires unique considerations due to the interdisciplinary and regionally diverse nature of agricultural research. By addressing structural inequities, prioritizing accessibility, and fostering leadership, the global agricultural research community can ensure its continued relevance in solving the most pressing challenges of our time (Fig. 17.1).

17.1. Reforming Journal Ratings
A key pillar of advancing agricultural sciences lies in the reform of journal rating systems. Current systems often rely heavily on impact factors, a metric that, while useful, is not comprehensive. By moving toward a multidimensional evaluation framework, we can prioritize relevance, diversity of contributions, and societal impact alongside citation metrics. Reforms could include:
• Incorporating qualitative assessments of journals, such as their contributions to underrepresented research areas or regions.
• Promoting open-access journals that adhere to rigorous peer-review standards.

The final chapter of this exploration into agricultural sciences casts a forward-looking lens on the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. As global population levels continue to rise, with estimates suggesting we will surpass 9 billion people by 2050, the demand for sustainable and efficient agricultural practices has never been more urgent. 16.1. Advanced Technologies and Their Transformative Potential
In the past decade, advanced technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and big data analytics have become central to scientific inquiry. These tools are now increasingly being applied to agricultural research, offering unprecedented opportunities for innovation. For example, AI-powered predictive models can help forecast crop yields, pest outbreaks, and weather

Policy plays a critical role in shaping the future of agricultural sciences. It determines the resources allocated to research, the inclusivity of publishing practices, and the extent of global collaboration (Fig. 15.1).
This chapter outlines actionable policy recommendations to support equitable publishing, strengthen research infrastructure, and encourage global partnerships. Furthermore, it delves into the importance of fostering interdisciplinary research and emphasizes why agricultural sciences need to continue gaining momentum in the face of global challenges.
15.1. Equitable Publishing Practices
Access to academic publishing remains a significant challenge for researchers in developing countries. High article processing charges (APCs) for open-access journals often exclude underfunded institutions and individual researchers. Policy interventions are essential to create a more equitable publishing ecosystem.
15.1.1. Subsidies for Open Access Publishing
Governments and funding agencies should subsidize APCs for researchers from low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). For instance, the Plan S initiative-backed by organizations like the European Science Foundation—aims to make all publicly funded research open access (Plan S, 2018).

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 interconnected goals established by the United Nations in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These goals aim to address global challenges, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice (Fig. 14.1).
14.1. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The SDGs provide a universal framework to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. Following is the list of the 17 SDGs
1. No Poverty: End poverty in all its forms everywhere.
2. Zero Hunger: End hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.
3. Good Health and Well-Being: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

The current systems of journal rating and evaluation have long been criticized for their emphasis on narrow metrics, such as the journal impact factor (JIF), which often fail to reflect the broader contributions of academic work. Despite their widespread use, these systems frequently reinforce inequities within academia, marginalize underrepresented voices, and fail to prioritize the societal impacts of research (Fig. 13.1).
This chapter consolidates recommendations for reforming journal rating systems, emphasizing fairness, inclusivity, and societal impact. Drawing on existing literature and expert recommendations, we outline a comprehensive framework for designing a rating system that balances academic rigor with accessibility and relevance.
13.1. Revising Evaluation Metrics
The reliance on metrics such as JIF has perpetuated a cycle of prioritizing high-citation fields and well resourced institutions. Garfield (2006), the founder of the JIF, himself noted that it was never intended to serve as the singular measure of research quality, yet its dominance in academia persists. Critics argue that the JIF favors fields with inherently higher citation rates, sidelining disciplines such as the humanities, social sciences, and regional studies (Moher et al., 2018). Moreover, the JIF incentivizes salacious or sensational findings that attract citations, often at the expense of methodological rigor (Brembs et al., 2013). To address these issues, scholars have proposed alternative evaluation metrics that prioritize broader dimensions of impact. For example, the Leiden Manifesto (Hicks et al., 2015) outlines ten principles for responsible research evaluation,

National journals play a crucial role in the dissemination of regionally relevant research, particularly in specialized fields such as agricultural sciences. These journals act as accessible platforms for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to share findings, innovations, and solutions tailored to local contexts. Strengthening national journals is essential for fostering knowledge exchange, promoting inclusivity in scientific communication, and addressing the unique challenges faced by different regions (Fig. 12.1).
This chapter explores strategies for improving the quality, visibility, and credibility of national journals, with examples from countries across the globe, including those outside North America and Europe. Case studies of successful initiatives are included to illustrate best practices for empowering local publishing platforms, with a particular focus on non-English publications.
12.1. The Importance of National Journals in Agricultural Sciences
Agricultural sciences are inherently context-dependent. Local factors such as climate, soil type, cropping systems, and socioeconomic conditions influence the challenges faced by farmers and the solutions that are most effective. National journals provide a vital medium for addressing these region-specific issues, enabling researchers to publish studies that may not align with the broader focus of international journals. Furthermore, these journals often cater to the immediate needs of local policymakers, extension workers, and educators, ensuring that research findings are translated into actionable outcomes.

Predatory journals undermine the integrity of academic publishing by charging exorbitant fees without providing rigorous peer review. These deceptive entities exploit the academic community, especially targeting early-career researchers, those from underfunded institutions, and scholars in developing countries. By prioritizing profit over quality, predatory journals erode trust in the research ecosystem, dilute scientific knowledge, and tarnish the reputation of genuine academic endeavors (Fig. 11.1).
This chapter delves into the multifaceted challenges posed by predatory journals and outlines comprehensive strategies for researchers, institutions, and policymakers to combat their pernicious effects.
11.1. Understanding Predatory Journals
Predatory journals are characterized by their lack of transparency, absence of editorial rigor, and aggressive solicitation of authors. They often masquerade as legitimate open-access journals but fail to adhere to the ethical standards of scholarly publishing. Unlike reputable journals, which uphold rigorous peer-review processes to ensure the validity and originality of research, predatory journals accept articles with minimal or no scrutiny. This results in the dissemination of low-quality or even fraudulent research, undermining the credibility of academic literature.
Several red flags can help researchers identify predatory journals. These include:

The credibility of academic publishing hinges significantly on the integrity of journal rating systems. These systems, designed to evaluate and rank academic journals based on various metrics, play a pivotal role in shaping research priorities, funding allocations, and academic career trajectories. However, despite their importance, many journal rating systems are criticized for lacking transparency and ethical rigor (Fig. 10.1).
This chapter explores these shortcomings, focusing on potential biases embedded in current systems and proposing solutions to enhance their transparency and fairness.
10.1. Role of Journal Rating Systems in Academic Publishing
Journal rating systems serve as gatekeepers in the academic publishing ecosystem. They influence where researchers choose to publish their work, how institutions evaluate scholarly output, and how funding agencies allocate resources. Metrics such as impact factor, h-index, and SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) are commonly used to rank journals. These metrics, while useful, often reduce the multifaceted nature of scholarly impact into single numerical values, potentially oversimplifying and distorting the evaluation process. The reliance on these metrics creates a feedback loop wherein highly ranked journals attract more submissions, increasing their citation counts and reinforcing their dominance. This system can marginalize smaller or niche journals that publish

Global agricultural research, an essential field in ensuring food security and sustainable development, is heavily influenced by the academic and publishing ecosystems in Europe and North America. This chapter examines the challenges faced by researchers from developing regions, focusing on limited representation in editorial boards, barriers to accessing high-impact journals, and the overarching dominance of Western institutions (Fig. 9.1).
These issues underscore the need for greater inclusivity and recognition of regional expertise to foster a more equitable global research landscape.
9.1. Dominance of Europe and North America in Agricultural Research
Publishing
The dominance of Europe and North America in agricultural research publishing is evident from the distribution of international journals in agriculture and allied disciplines. Approximately 75% of these journals originate from these regions. Breaking this down further:
• Europe accounts for 43.6% of international journals, with leading contributors including the United Kingdom (14.1%), the Netherlands (8.5%), Germany (6.2%), France (4.3%), Italy (3.5%), and other European countries (7.0%).
• North America contributes 31.4%, with the United States alone publishing 28.5% and Canada accounting for 2.9%.

In the evolving landscape of agricultural sciences, integrative research models have emerged as a cornerstone for addressing complex, multifaceted challenges. These models bridge the gap between theoretical frameworks and their practical applications, ensuring that innovations are not just conceptual but also actionable and impactful. This chapter delves into the essence of integrative research models, highlighting their significance, successful case studies, and strategies to foster their adoption and effectiveness in agricultural progress.
8.1. The Need for Integrative Research Models
Agriculture today is at the nexus of critical global challenges, including climate change, food security, biodiversity loss, and resource scarcity. Traditional, siloed research approaches often fall short in addressing these interconnected issues. Integrative research models offer a paradigm shift by combining insights from diverse disciplines such as agronomy, ecology, economics, data science, and social sciences. This approach not only enhances the depth of understanding but also ensures that solutions are holistic and sustainable (Fig. 8.1).
One of the primary drivers for adopting integrative research models is the increasing complexity of agricultural systems. Modern agriculture is no longer

This effort emphasizes the synergy of scientific expertise, ensuring that innovations and advancements are not only accessible but also utilized effectively to address pressing global concerns, such as climate change, public health, sustainable development, and digital transformation. Through this platform, India seeks to promote open science, equitable knowledge-sharing, and stronger international cooperation in research and development.
7.1. Qualities of Effective Leaders in Agricultural Sciences
To excel in agricultural sciences, leaders must embody a diverse range of qualities that enable them to inspire teams, foster innovation, and drive impactful research. These qualities include:
7.1.1. Strong Communication Skills
Effective leaders in agricultural sciences must be adept at communicating complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences. Whether engaging with fellow researchers, policymakers, farmers, or the general public, they must tailor their messages to ensure clarity and relevance. Strong communication skills are also essential for securing research funding, building partnerships, and advocating for science-based policies.

In the world of academic publishing, Article Processing Charges (APCs) have emerged as a significant barrier, particularly for researchers from countries with limited resources like India. These charges, often levied by open-access journals to cover the costs of peer review, editing, and dissemination, have created a financial divide that impedes equitable access to scholarly communication. This chapter delves into the multifaceted challenges posed by APCs and outlines potential solutions to address the inequities they perpetuate (Fig. 6.1).
6.1. The Burden of Article Processing Charges
The financial burden of APCs is disproportionately felt by researchers in developing nations. Many prestigious open-access journals charge APCs ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 or more per article. For researchers in high-income countries, these charges might be manageable, supported by robust institutional funding or grants. However, for their counterparts in countries like India, where research funding is limited and often tied to modest institutional budgets, such costs are prohibitive. The disparity in income and currency exchange rates further amplifies this challenge. A charge of $2,000, for instance, could equate to several months’ salary for a researcher in India, compared to a fraction of that amount for a researcher in the United States or Europe.

Increased importance of research publications, impact factor and citations as metrics in evaluating science and assessing the quality of research is driving unethical practices too in research and publications. Adding to that, limited access to research publications, exuberant subscription charges, heavy article processing charges and several other transboundary science and technology issues are further dividing the scientific community which is severely impacting the progress of the Nation (Pathak, 2025). The National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) journal rating system serves as a cornerstone for researchers in India, particularly in the domain of agricultural sciences. Its significance lies in providing an accessible and systematic framework for evaluating the quality and relevance of academic journals. This chapter explores avenues for enhancing the NAAS journal rating methodologies to ensure greater accuracy, inclusivity, and ethical rigor in the assessment process. By integrating global best practices, incorporating diverse metrics, and addressing emerging challenges in the academic publishing landscape, the proposed framework aims to make NAAS ratings more robust and globally competitive. To enable universal access to scholarly scientific literature, under Aatmanirbhar Bharat it would be appropriate to strengthen our own Indian Journals to compete globally in the long run. In this regard, NAAS rating of Agri-journals has been a progressive step and NAAS should continue to upgrade its evaluation mechanism. The Professional Association of Agricultural Societies (PAAS) and NAAS partnership in upgrading of publications in Indian society journals should be encouraged.

Since its founding in the early 2000s, Scopus - which describes itself as a “source-neutral abstract and citation database curated by independent subjectmatter experts” — has been recognized as one of the top research indexes. At the time of writing this blog post, Scopus includes over 25,100 titles from 5,000 publishers, spanning 240 academic disciplines - with a staggering 76.8 million core records. Scopus encompasses research across scholarly disciplines but consists primarily of science and technology articles (Fig. 4.1).
There are many benefits to having journals added to the Scopus database. In addition to its extensive content coverage encompassing virtually all subjects, Scopus is known for its high level of academic rigor, including an annual journal re-evaluation process, which it requires as “an incentive for journals to maintain their high content quality.”
Scopus also provides a wide range of metrics for indexed content, including
• Journal-level metrics such as Citescore, which both publishes an annual impact score and gives monthly updates on how things are currently shaping up for each of the indexed titles via the CiteScore Tracker
• Article-level metrics such as PlumX, which analyzes how readers are responding to content in the broader online context (i.e., via tweets, blogs, Wikipedia references, etc.)
• Author-level metrics such as the h-index, which aims to provide an objective measure of the overall impact of individual authors’ publication histories.

Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) are widely used metrics for evaluating journal impact. While JCR is based on Web of Science and emphasizes high-impact journals, SJR uses Scopus data, offering broader geographic and disciplinary coverage. This chapter evaluates their relative strengths and weaknesses, focusing on their applicability across disciplines and geographies. Multiple trends also impact research landscapes across the globe (Fig. 3.1).
Comprehensive tables provide a comparative overview of which metric is more suitable for various disciplines and global regions. The assessment of academic journals plays a critical role in research evaluation, academic promotions, and funding decisions. Two prominent journal-ranking systems, JCR and SJR, serve as benchmarks for these purposes. JCR, managed by Clarivate Analytics, primarily focuses on citation frequency over a two-year window. Conversely, SJR, developed by SCImago using Scopus data, incorporates a prestige-weighted citation approach over a three-year period (Fig. 3.2). Several of our Indian Scientific Journals are not covered by JCR. As more than 80 per cent Journals are from Europe and North America. The CLARIVATE covers only few Indian Journals most of which are published by Central Government Agencies

Journal ratings are instrumental in shaping the trajectory of scientific research, particularly in the field of agricultural sciences. They significantly influence the visibility, credibility, and funding of research endeavors, often acting as benchmarks for academic excellence and institutional prestige. However, the methodologies used to assign these ratings have been a subject of intense scrutiny due to their lack of transparency and inherent biases. This chapter explores the multifaceted role of journal ratings in agricultural sciences, shedding light on their impact on research priorities, academic careers, and international scientific collaborations. It also examines the limitations of current rating systems, including their excessive reliance on metrics like the impact factor and the geographical biases that disadvantage researchers from developing countries.
2.1. Importance of Journal Ratings in Agricultural Sciences
Agricultural sciences encompass a broad range of disciplines, from crop genetics and soil science to agricultural economics and rural development. The field is pivotal for addressing global challenges such as food security, climate change, and sustainable development. Journal ratings serve as a critical tool for researchers, institutions, and funding agencies to evaluate the quality and relevance of scientific contributions.
2.1.1. Enhancing Research Visibility
High-rated journals often serve as the primary platforms for disseminating groundbreaking research. Publishing in these journals ensures greater visibility among peers, policymakers, & practitioners. This visibility is crucial in agricultural sciences, where translating research findings into practice can have immediate and far-reaching impacts on food systems and livelihoods. For instance, research on drought-resistant crops published in a high-impact journal is more likely to influence agricultural policies and attract investment in technology transfer

Agricultural sciences stand at the forefront of human progress, addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges - from ensuring global food security to mitigating the effects of climate change. This multidisciplinary field encompasses the study of crop production, animal husbandry, soil science, agrometeorology, biotechnology, and agricultural economics, all working collectively to improve farming systems and resource management. With the global population projected to surpass 9 billion by 2050, agricultural sciences hold the key to producing more food sustainably while minimizing the environmental footprint of agriculture. However, the effectiveness of agricultural sciences in meeting these challenges depends not only on the quality of research produced but also on the systems that govern how this research is evaluated, disseminated, and applied.
One of the most significant drivers of academic and professional success in agricultural sciences is the journal rating system. These systems serve as benchmarks for evaluating the quality and impact of scholarly publications, influencing funding decisions, academic promotions, and research collaborations. A Research Evaluation System is a structured framework or methodology used to assess and measure the quality, impact, and relevance of research activities, outputs, and outcomes. These systems are crucial in academia, industry, and research institutions to ensure that resources are used effectively and that research aligns with organizational or societal goals. The evaluation of performance in scientific research at any level - whether at the individual, institutional, research council or country level – is not easy. Traditionally, research evaluation at the individual and institutional levels has depended largely on peer opinion, but with the rapid growth of science over the last century and the availability of databases and scientometric techniques, quantitative indicators have gained importance. Yet, the methodologies underlying these rating systems are often opaque, biased, and narrowly focused on quantitative metrics such as citation counts and impact factors. Such limitations create barriers for researchers from underrepresented regions and disciplines, perpetuating global disparities in scientific research and its application. Both peer review and metrics are subject to flaws, more so in India because of the way they are used. Government agencies, funding bodies and academic and research institutions in India suffer from the impact factor and h-index syndrome. The uninformed use of indicators such as average and cumulative impact factors and the arbitrary criteria stipulated by some agencies

Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time, with far-reaching consequences for the environment, human health, and the economy. One of the most significant impacts of climate change is on the world’s water resources. Rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, and increased frequency of extreme weather events are all taking a toll on the availability, quality, and management of water resources. Water is essential for human survival, and its availability and quality are crucial for human health, food security, and economic development. However, climate change is altering the hydrological cycle, leading to changes in precipitation patterns, increased evaporation, and altered water flows. These changes have significant implications on demand for water resources, including reduced water availability, decreased water quality, and increased risk of waterrelated disasters which will ultimately impact agricultural production and food security.
15.1. Changes in Precipitation Patterns
One of the most significant impacts of climate change on water resources is the alteration of precipitation patterns and projected per cent changes in average annual precipitation over 1850-1900 period at 2.00C increase in temperature are depicted here (Fig.15.1).

Hydrometeorology forecasting is limited to forecasting of occurrence of rainfall to a greater extent. Although several countries all over the world have developed and established hydrometorological forecasting with focus on occurrence of floods and droughts, still there is very limited success. Floods are associated with occurrence of continuous heavy rainfall due to movement of low-pressure systems like cyclones and depression overflow into rivers, reservoirs and breaching of bunds. In countries like India, the floods occur on the average in 70 lakh hectors of area and the economic loss due to floods and expenditure on relief operations mounting year after year besides loss of life. Foods occur at all of a sudden leaving little time for planning mitigation or rescue operation. Flood forecasting in based on impact assessment of heavy rainfall assessments to identify the exact area that is likely to be affected. It requires more intensive research. Forecasting of droughts is still an area of serious concern. There is need to strengthen regional capabilities to develop forecasting techniques for occurrence of flood and droughts through proper analysis of historical data in conjunction with meteorological forecasts and remote sensing data. Though flood alerts are issued, the identification of exact area and the extent to which flood impacts are not very clear most of the times heavy rainfall warnings are not just sufficient until and unless the vulnerable areas can be clearly specified. The medium range forecasting will be extremely useful for issuing flood alerts.
14.1. Forecasting Droughts
Long range forecasting of seasonal rainfall can indicate the possibility of receiving excess or deficit rainfall over larger regions. In India, there is considerable progress in development of long range forecast of Southwest monsoon rainfall. This forecast also indicating the regions which may get surplus or deficit rainfall and for indifferent parts of a given region as well. However, there is serious dearth of local expertise to further analyse and interpret the long-range forecast for a given area on the basis of local climate data. The advantages of reliable long-range forecast are still unexpected. Almost one fifth of the area in India gets affected by draught most of the years. The drought affects are more severe in arid and semi arid regions. Prediction of occurrence of drought and its intensity, period of occurrence and the areas to be affected by drought is very important. During recent years, there is considerable increase in the occurrence of droughts due to climate change which is attributed mainly to atmospheric pollution. The physics of the pollution is consistent and not the policies support in handling hydrometerological disasters. There are instances where in flood and droughts occurred in the same

A watershed is an area that provides pathway to the surface or sub surface water flow to a given drainage system. The watershed is a hydrological unit. The area of watershed may vary from few hectares to thousands of square kilometres. The watershed development involves effective management of land and vegetation in order to conserve and improve the quantity of water. The watershed development is a comprehensive and sustainable solution to water conservation (Fig.13.1).
The watershed development has several advantages. It helps in
• Conservation, upgradation and utilization of natural resources particularly land, water and vegetation
• Minimise the inequalities between rainfed and irrigated areas
• Promoting cost effective adoptable simple technologies
• Supply water for domestic ,agricultural and industrial use
• Poverty alleviation and employment generation
• Reducing chemical pollution
• Adopting flood control measures by constructing water storage or impounding structures

A disaster is sudden event that causes significant damage to the people, environment and the economy. Disasters are serious disruptions to the functioning of a community that exceed its capacity to cope up using its own resources. The disasters that result either due to excess water or severe water deficit are floods and droughts.
12.1. Floods
The flood is an overflowing of water onto land that is normally dry. Floods may occur due to
• Heavy rainfall
• Ocean waves
• Snow melting
The economic losses due to floods will be very high and nearly 68 per cent of the economic losses are attributed to floods only. During the year 2018, India suffered a loss of nearly 90,000 crores due to floods alone. There are several causes for occurrence of floods in India. The major causes are
• Severe cyclonic storms in coastal areas which produce continuous heavy rainfall for 3 to 4 days in succession
• Encroachment of flood plains with residential structures
• Inadequate strength of river banks when there is high flows of water in the rivers
• Unplanned growth of urban areas
• Silting of water storage structures due to increased soil erosion thereby decreasing the storage capacity of reservoirs
• Simultaneous flooding of rivers and tributaries due to excessive water flows

Agriculture sector alone uses nearly seventy per cent of fresh water in the world. Therefore, water use economy in the agriculture sector is becoming a necessity. Increasing flood production is possible reducing water used for irrigation if we can adopt precision irrigation (Fig.11.1).
The precision irrigation has to be practiced by providing water to the crop plants in its root zone to meet the water requirements. The precise irrigation can result in-
• Water saving
• Avoid weed control
• Preventing loss of water due to infiltration
• Preventing loss of water due to surface evaporation from the soil
• Minimise salinity problems
• Improving water use efficiency of crops
Traditionally farmers were practicing flood irrigation. It is a method of watering crops delivering to a field and allowing it to flow over the ground among the crops. It is a simple and inexpensive technique followed in less developed areas. Flood irrigation is not very efficient way as nearly 50 per cent of the water applied in the field will be lost through run-off, soil evaporation and other factors. Flood irrigation is only suitable in wet climates and not effective in sandy soils. It leads to water logging in clay soils. There are several types of flood irrigation such as basin, border, furrow and contour irrigation. Although flood irrigation is not very efficient, the water wastage can be avoided to some extent using some techniques

The purpose of irrigation scheduling is to decide upon the amount of water to be applied for irrigation and timing of irrigation in order to avoid wastage of precious water. The irrigation scheduling is also used to determine the number of irrigations required for a crop during its growth cycle and judicious use of water depending upon the weather forecasts issued from time to time. The irrigation scheduling has to be planned for either full irrigation or supplementary irrigation depending upon the availability of water resources and the season during which crops are grown. Crops grown during the dry season requires full irrigation and crops grown during the rainy season require supplementary irrigation. The third category of irrigation is protective irrigation which is practiced in dryland areas. The protective irrigation is given when the crops are experiencing severe moisture stress due to prolonged dry spells wherever the farmers has access to small ponds and tanks developed within his own field as water harvesting structures.
10.1. Full Irrigation
Under full irrigation, the crops are provided with irrigation right from land preparation till the crop is getting ready for harvest maturity. The full irrigation will be usually planned for maximum yields of the crop (Fig.10.1).

Remote sensing involves measurement of the physical properties of a body without actual contact with it. It is based on the reflectance when the electromagnetic radiation is incident upon a body or surface. The spectral characteristics of the reflected radiation vary depending upon the nature and condition of the surface. In case of vegetation, it absorbs light and can reflect light in the visible range. The leaf pigments dominate the reflectance properties (Fig.9.1). The radiation bands within which the reflectance of electromagnetic radiation takes place are classified as follows-

9.1. Vegetation Indices
The vegetation index is a mathematical expression that uses spectral imaging data to characterize the health and growth of the vegetation indices are calculated using data collected by remote sensors like Satellites. The vegetation indices have wide range of applications in agriculture and hydrology including
• Classification of vegetation
• Apex health of vegetation
• Changes in land cover
• Drought monitoring
• Estimation of soil moisture
• Evaluate crop growth, vigour, biomass and chlorophyll content
• Irrigation scheduling

Stress is force per unit area. When matter is subjected to stress; it may undergo changes in size, shape and displacement. Plants are grown in open environment and are likely to experience stress due to environmental conditions or when subjected to pests and diseases. The stress experienced by plants due to environmental conditions is called abiotic stresses. These include stresses caused by weather factors and climatic conditions and include moisture stress and thermal stress. The plants may also experience stress due to strong winds, dryness and as well as humid conditions (Fig.8.1).
The plants are generally classified into three types depending upon the ability to cope up with moisture stress as exhibited by-
• Drought resistance
• Drought tolerance
• Drought adaptations
The moisture stress may be to shortage of Water Compared to its requirements for evapotranspiration and metabolic activities. The plants may also suffer moisture

It is estimated that the world requires nearly 70 per cent increase in agriculture production to meet the demand for food by the year 2050 based on current trends in population growth it can be achieved either by increasing land under cultivation (which is not possible), increasing the availability of more water for agriculture and efficient utilisation of available land and water resources. The best available option is to increase in productivity of unit of land for unit water. However, the availability of water for agriculture production cannot be presumed to be same year after year as the major source of water is precipitation more known for its uncertainty due to change in weather patterns from season to season and year to year all over the world. The element of uncertainty is increasing since the beginning of the present century due to climate change under the present circumstance, the crop production is practiced -
• In Irrigated Areas
• In Rainfed Areas
• Under Conserved Moisture Condition Without Any Source Of Irrigation
For increasing crop production under irrigated condition, it is necessary to identify crops and varieties that can produce more yield per unit of water even when there is some decrease in availability of water through irrigation. Therefore, the concept of water production function is used for evaluation of water use efficiency of the crops.

The movement of water from soil to the crop canopy and leaves to provide water for transpiration and the effect of weather factors on transpiration is most important area of study. When the crop is just sown, there will be an only evaporation of water from the soil. After germination of seeds there will be emergence of seedlings. After the emergence of seedlings there will be formation of leaves. The small leaves start intercepting the incoming solar radiation and absorb some portion of solar energy, get heated and there will be evaporation turn off water from the stomata of the leaf. When water vapour escapes into the atmosphere through the stomata of leaf, the plant absorbs carbon dioxide which results in photosynthetic activity. During night time, there will not be any photosynthesis due to absence of sunlight. The plants use parts of the photosynthetic accumulate for its metabolic activity and the process is called maintenance respiration. The balance of the photosynthetic accumulate contributes to the expansion of leaves and increased dry matter accumulation in crop plans. The process of dry matter accumulation in plants is called crop growth. When the seedlings start growing, there will be formation of tillers or branches. When the leaves grow it reaches a stage when the crop will be completely shading the ground and the soil evaporation will be minimum and maximum amount of water is lost only through evapotranspiration (Fig.6.1).

The plants draw water from the soil for growth and development. The soil acts a reservoir for soil moisture (Fig.5.1). The basic aim of a soil water balance model is to quantify the manner in which the water supplied to the soil either through precipitation and irrigation is disposed off. In the process, the soil water balance models were found to be extremely useful to determine the amount of water utilized by the crop for evapotranspiration.
The concept of water balance was originally developed by Thornthwaite, an American geographer and it formed the basis for development of more scientifi c advances due to its wide range of applicability including
• Choice of crops/ cropping systems based on water availability
• Irrigation scheduling
• Optimisation of limited water resources for higher productivity
• Characterization of droughts and agricultural droughts
• Assessment of crop yield and pre harvest forecasting of crop yields
• Designing irrigation projects
• Development of water storage structures
There are quite a large number of water balance models available in literature nowadays. Several of these models may be applicable for regions where there are developed. There were considerable efforts to develop water balance models can be used by the crop on daily basis in case of different crops as well. The choice of a water balance model to a large extent depends on the availability of data required for running the model. It may not be possible to cover all models available in

The soil consists of many solid particles of different sizes and is capable of absorbing and retaining water in the soil within certain limits when water is received through either from precipitation or by irrigation. The water that is held in the soil is called soil water (Fig.4.1). It can exist also in the form of water vapour as well. The crop production depends upon the soil water. All the water that is present in the soil may not be available for plants.
The water availability to the plants from the soil depends upon some physical properties of the soil as well as on the physical processes that govern the existence of water in the soil. Therefore, it is necessary to understand about the relationships that govern the water availability in the soil as explained in the following text-
4.1. Energy Concept of Soil Water
Soil water energy concept is all about potential energy, gravitational potential, osmatic potential, pressure potential energies.
4.1.1. Soil Water Energy: The total energy state of soil water is defined by its
equivalent potential energy as determined by various forces acting on the water per unit quantity. Different energies are involved including kinetic and potential energy.

The major source of water supply on the earth is precipitation. The water received at the earth’s surface from the atmosphere either in solid or liquid form is called precipitation. The water received in solid form may be snow or hail. The precipitation is seasonal in character in many parts of the world. The precipitation may occur due to –
• Conventional physical process
• Orographic effect and
• Convergence of air masses
3.1. Conventional Physical Process
It occurs when the air on the surface of the earth and few metres above the surface of the earth is heated by absorbing long wave radiation emitted by the earth’s surface. As the air is heated, it becomes lighter. The water vapour formed due to evaporation from the soil surface or water bodies will mix with the air and the air will be moist. When the moist air gets heated it becomes lighter and rises vertically upwards. After reaching certain height, the air gets cooled enough to get saturated with water vapour. The moisture in the saturated air will condense on small solid particles to form tiny drops. These solid particles may be dust or smoke or solid particles suspended in the atmosphere and are called aerosols.

Water is the most important natural resource that governs and exercises control on living organisms on earth besides supporting all human activities. The demand for water is almost increasing at exponential rate due to increase in population and industrialization. All sectors of agriculture including crop production, horticulture, animal husbandry, poultry and fi sheries primarily depend upon water. Water scarcity can cause all kinds of miseries. The water exists in all 3 different forms on earth. It exists as snow or ice in glaciers and ice caps, liquid water in rivers, lakes, streams, tanks, ponds and as groundwater storage. The water exists in all three different forms in the atmosphere. The clouds may contain fi ne ice particles, tiny water droplets and as well as water vapour. The air in atmosphere also contains water vapour. It is estimated that 97% of water is salt water and remaining 3% of water is pure and fresh water. Approximately two-thirds of the fresh water is trapped in glaciers and ice caps. Most of the fresh water (30%) exists as groundwater. About 0.7% of fresh water exists as soil water and 0.3% a fresh water accounts for surface water resources and water present in the atmosphere as water vapour, water drops and ice particles. The circulation of water between oceans, earth and atmosphere forms hydrologic cycle.
2.1. Hydrological Cycle
The hydrological cycle explains the continuous recirculation and transport of water between the atmosphere, oceans and earth. It is a very complex system that has many sub cycles associated with it. For example, the water from earth surface, oceans and water bodies get evaporated due to heat energy received from the sun in the form of incident solar radiation (Fig.2.1).

The entire world is now facing a crisis situation. The problems encountered to address the crisis are interactive with each other and there is no easy way to find solution. The world’s population is expected to increase by 70 per cent by the end of year 2050 and there is need to step up agricultural production for a hunger free world. Nearly 70 per cent of the fresh water is used in agriculture sector. The demand for water in agriculture sector can be judged by the fact that several thousands of litres of water is required to produce one kilogram of food grains. Whatever maybe the source from which water is drawn for agriculture, all the sources depend upon the precipitation for replenishment on continuous basis. The precipitation patterns are not consistent and are known for greater variability from season to season, year to year and from region to region. These inconsistencies are further increasing due to recent threat of climate change triggered by the atmospheric pollution. The atmospheric pollution due to increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is responsible for rise in temperatures. The rise in temperature induced changes in global pressure and wind systems. The consequence effect of it is changes in rainfall patterns, frequent occurrence of extreme weather events like floods, droughts, heat waves, intensified cyclonic activity. Rise in temperatures is increasing evaporation of water and water requirement of crops as well. There is considerable increase of the chemicals in the agriculture sector in the form of fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and weedicides how to increase crop production and protection of crops from biotic and abiotic stresses. Consequently, there is increased pollution of water resources which may adversely affect the availability of fresh water, which is essential and critical input in agriculture for increasing agricultural production. It calls for efficient utilization of water resources in agriculture. More concerted efforts are required immediately to:
• Improve water use efficiency in agriculture
• Reduce pollution of water resources
• Conservation of fresh water resources
• Reduce emissions in agriculture sector and
• Prevent dwindling of fresh water resources

Laboratory pipettes are classified by their method of liquid transfer. There are two types of pipette one is plastic which is made up of polystyrene and are essentially disposable and second one is glass pipettes are very resistant to chemicals. Glass pipette can be used frequently by washing, sterilising and dry heat sterilisation is also available. Some of the common types of pipettes are using in laboratory such as serological, volumetric, micropipettes, multichannel, and Pasteur pipettes. Serological and graduated pipettes are used for transferring various volumes, while micropipettes and volumetric types of pipettes are only considered for precise measurement and transfer. Multichannel pipettes are used for dispensing into multiple wells, and Pasteur pipettes are simple for transferring small amounts.
1. Serological Pipettes
• Also known as graduated pipettes, made of glass or transparent polystyrene they are calibrated with markings to measure and dispense varying volumes.
• Appropriate for cell culture applications, transferring liquids and mixing.
2. Multichannel Pipettes
• It is design to transfer multiple samples at once, often used for 96 well plates or pcr tubes.
• It can be manual or automated, with multiple heads for faster dispensing.
3. Volumetric Pipettes
• It is designed to supply for single and particular volume of liquid.
• Marked by single graduation for an exact volume, such as 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 mL.
• Used in chemical reactions and analysis where accuracy is crucial.

The total plate count (TPC) is also called the Bacterial plate count (BPC), aerobic plate count, standard plate count (SPC), total viable count (TVC) or mesophilic count represents the number of colony forming units (CFU) per g (or per mL) of growing microorganisms such as bacteria, yeast and mold on a nonspecific solid bacteriological growth medium under the specified conditions. Temperature, incubating time, medium type, and any other conditions used in the enumeration varies upon reference standards and laboratory objectives. Laboratories participating in the program choose their own routine conditions.
Principle
Usually direct count of too many bacteria in a sample is difficult but the bacterial colonies may be used as a measure of the bacterial cells in the known serially dilution and plated out on an agar surface in such a way that single isolated bacteria form visible isolated colonies. However, colony-forming unit might actually consist of a chain of bacteria rather than a single bacterium if the organism often develops various cell configurations, such chains. Furthermore, a portion of the bacteria might be grouped together. Thus, typically refer to the process of using the plate count technique as a means of estimating the number of colony forming units (CFUs) in that known solution.
