Abstract

Participation of rural women and youth in beekeeping activities provides a unique opportunity to improve rural livelihood and poverty reduction. Women have explored their own niche in beekeeping industry by actively engaging in post harvesting of bee products. Income generation is one of the major reasons for participating in beekeeping activities and beekeeping was ranked number one at the same level as agriculture as major source of income. Post harvesting beekeeping, however, needs liquid capital investment which, limit women and youth to fully participate in the business. Cultural practices are also one of the main hindrances for adult women and youth to participate in beekeeping activities. Nonetheless, presence of beekeeping groups and associations, community banks, forest reserves and beekeeping awareness campaigns in the areas provided opportunities for women and youth to participate in beekeeping. Beekeeping represents one opportunity for income generation which need not be time consuming and can fit in well with women’s priority activities. women be given the opportunity to start beekeeping, it is important that all beekeeping development programs ensure from the outset that extension messages reach rural women, and that they are able to take full advantage of training and credit facilities.

The Tuppa area, which is located 10-12 km away from Nanded city, and covers an area of about 66 km² was blessed with good , quality of water before industrialisation in this area. With the advent of industries more and more people from this region started complaining about the bad taste & quality of drinking water from dug and bore wells. From 1997 to1999 there was continuous increase in the lateral extent of pollution, with deeper bore wells more contaminated than the dug wells (Kaplay, et al. 2004).

Abstract

Abundant organic wastes come from agriculture sector. Earthworms offer an opportunity for beneficial disposal of this unwanted material by converting into vermi compost, a national wealth. It is rich in nutrients, enzymes, hormones and beneficial microbes but free from harmful chemicals and pathogenic microorganisms, hence improves crop productivity. Disposal through burning creates environment pollution and loss of valuable plant nutrients. Dumping creates unhygienic situation. Vermicomposting is quicker than other conventional composting techniques. In northeast India, Eisenia foetida and Perionyx excavatus were found equally efficient in vermi composting of agricultural wastes. Among different bio mass, vegetable wastes and soft weeds were converted to compost very quickly by using Perionyx excavatus within 1 to 2 months. Composting was found moderate (3 to 4.5 months) in crop residues and hardy weeds while slow (5 to 10 months) in case of dry tree leaves. When different wastes are mixed together it takes 3.5 to 4.5 months for complete composting. Composting can be accelerated by mixing the wastes with cellulolytic fungi such as Triichoderma viride, Trichurus spiralis, Paecilomyces fusiporus and Aspergillus awamori. Vermicompost prepared from wastes is a marketable product. It can bring prosperity in the villages by means of employment generation and good income. Awareness among people can be created through training.

No plant in the earth is completely worthless. Weeds have also some beneficial effects although they do much harm in different ways. The beneficial effects of weeds are as follows:

    1.    Most of weeds absorbs nutrient from the deeper layer of soil. When such weeds are incorporated in the soil, they add organic matter content of the soils. As a result, the fertility of plough layer from where plants absorb most of their nutrients is enriched.

    2.    Weeds help in controlling erosion by the soil binding effects of their roots and by forming a living mulch, which resist beating action of rain drops and sweeping action of wind.

Introduction

Millet is a small grain cereal grass bearing coarse seeds, and since ancient times has been considered a valuable and nutritious grain. It includes jowar, bajra, ragi and small millets. Small millets include Barnyard millet, proso millet, kodo millet, little millet and foxtail millet. It is rich in fiber, protein, iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc, vitamin B, has a low glycemic index and has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties (Ranjan et al., 2023). These have been added to the modern lifestyle as healthy foods because they are beneficial for human health due to the presence of nutritional ingredients. The nutritional quality of food is the most important parameter for maintaining human health and comprehensive physical health. Good nutrition is the driving force for growth and maximisation of human genetic potential (Radhila et al, 2011). Food quality in the diet must be considered to maintain optimal human health and fitness to address the deep-seated problem of malnutrition. Diversification of food production at both the national and household levels should be encouraged, in addition to increasing domestic productivity and technology (Singh and Raghuvanshi, 2016). Some agricultural foods are not used by humans as staple foods due to human ignorance. Millet is one of them. Millet is used as food for animals and birds. Millet has many nutritional and medical functions (Yang et al, 2012).

They are short duration crops. Fodder is available for use in short period, e.g., cowpea and soybean can be harvested within 50-60 days of sowing. Being short duration crops, they can fit well in the gaps between two crops or seasons as catch crop.

Introduction
 Banana is a common man's fruit grown in about seven lakh ha area in India. Apart from fruit, banana crop generate huge quantity of waste biomass in the form of pseudostem, leaves, suckers, etc. This biomass is absolute waste in most of the states of India as of now. Further farmers are spending about Rs. 15000 to 20000/ha for disposing off this waste from their fields. The present mode of disposing off pseudostem waste in nallas, borrow pits, road side, burning etc., which are causing environmental problems. In order to utilize this waste particularly pseudostem for developing different products, a project titled; “A Value Chain on Utilization of Banana Pseudostem for Fibre and Other Value Added Products” was sanctioned under NAIP in consortium mode by ICAR, New Delhi during 2008. The project entitled, “Establishment of Secondary Agriculture unit for skill development in students and farmers” was sanctioned by PIU, under the aegis of NAHEP-CAAST sub project in 2018. Under this project “Value addition and waste management of horticultural produces” was examined in special reference to banana pseudostem as supplemental raw material for NOVEL pesticide and fungicide. In view of this, Soil and Water Management Research Unit, N.A.U., Navsari have worked in consortium comprises of Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology (CIRCOT), ICAR, Mumbai, Manmade Textile Research Association (MANTRA), Surat and J. K. Mills Ltd., Songadh as the partners. The basic aim of this project was to develop different value added products using presently waste banana pseudostem as raw material. As envisaged in project proposal, the value added products viz; Fibre and nonwoven fabrics, handmade papers and boards, vermi-compost, enriched sap (NAUROJI Novel organic liquid nutrient) and candy have been developed which are techno economically viable. The viability is substantiated by the fact that more than ten private parties have already signed MoU with NAU, Navsari for commercial production and marketing of organic liquid nutrient prepared using banana pseudostem sap and central core candy. Simultaneously, processes for the products like microcrystalline cellulose from Fibre, sap as a mordant in textile dying, pseudostem scutcher based vermicompost as fish feed, etc. have also been standardized during the current project period. This has become possible due to highly dedicated efforts put in by the team of scientists from all the four partners and full moral boosting supports by their authorities in implementing the project smoothly.

Nano-bioinoculants are poised to transform Indian agriculture with solutions tailored to its diverse agro-climatic regions, prevailing smallholder farm management systems, and environmental sustainability. The chapter explores the progress, present research scenario, and future scope of nano-bioinoculants in India. These have been built upon early nanotechnology explorations catalyzed by government initiatives like the Nano-Mission and augmenting research infrastructure, with ongoing research being marked by crop-based studies of Indian crops and utilizing the immense diversity of indigenous microorganisms in cutting-edge nanomaterials. Through controlling the complex plant-microbe interactions to biotic and abiotic stresses, the reaction of nano bioinoculants is being performed using advanced omics-based studies. Great progress is being made in the development of smart delivery systems for precision agriculture, in conjunction with novel formulation methods such as layer-by-layer assembly and stimulus-response release. The use of sensors, drones, and AI-based systems opens up possibilities for targeted application and real-time monitoring. Though commercialization is picking up speed via new start-ups and businesses, costeffectiveness issues, farmer awareness, and an immature regulatory system continue to be a challenge. Looking at the future, promising directions for intelligent farming highlight the revolutionary significance of such beneficial microbes in shaping a more durable, productive, and sustainable future for agriculture in India.

The increasing deployment of Large Language Models across education, healthcare, finance, employment and public services has made fairness and ethical responsibility central concerns in AI development. LLMs learn from enormous datasets that may contain historical inequalities, stereotypes, cultural assumptions and other forms of social bias. This chapter examines the origins, manifestations and consequences of bias in LLMs and considers approaches for promoting fair and responsible deployment. It discusses data bias arising from the composition and curation of training datasets, algorithmic bias introduced through model architectures and learning processes, and bias associated with human-in-the-loop systems. Gender, racial and cultural biases are considered because they can influence generated outputs and potentially reinforce existing inequalities. The chapter also examines fairness evaluation, mitigation strategies, transparency, accountability and human oversight. Ethical concerns extend beyond bias to hallucination, misinformation, privacy and inappropriate automation. Effective governance requires continuous monitoring rather than one-time assessment because model behaviour may change across applications and populations. The chapter therefore emphasizes responsible AI principles that place fairness, transparency, accountability, safety and human interests at the centre of LLM development and deployment.

Big Data refers to extremely large, very fast, highly diverse, and complex data that cannot be managed with conventional data management systems, tools or processes. In the perfect world, Big Data may include all kind of data, which can deliver the right information, to right person, in the right quantity, at the right time, to help in making the right decisions.

Pulses are considered to be the most effective means of overcoming protein and micronutrient malnutrition since they are excellent sources of dietary protein (19-25%), besides being rich in important minerals and vitamins (Ali and Kumar, 2004). In Bihar, people are mostly vegetarian in dietary habits and depend largely on pulses as the source of dietary protein. But production of pulses has not kept pace with the population growth and per capita availability of pulses has thus, declined from 61 g/day in 1950-51 to less than 28.0 g/day in 2001 as against 70 g/day the standards prescribed by ICMR. Moreover, in Bihar the contribution of cereals in total protein consumption is more than 73.0% which is not a healthy trend as cereal proteins lack many essential amino acids that are present in the pulses from which only 10.6% of total protein intake come in the diet of rural population. This alarming situation, perhaps, has arisen largely due to the quest for food security rather than nutritional security, being the prime national agenda. According to an estimate, more than 70% of gross cropped area in the state is occupied by paddy and wheat whereas, only 9.0% of it is shared by the pulses.

At the simplest level, the process of composting requires making a heap of organic material sprinkled with water which break down to humus after a period of weeks or months. However, modern bio composting is a multi-step, closely monitored process with measured inputs of water, air and carbon and nitrogen rich ( in proper C:N ratio ) materials.
The term composting is used and understand world wide with different
meanings. ( I remember a funny incidence in China when during my talk I mentioned that the process of bio composting does not appear to be understood by more than 80% people. Objecting to this, the President of the academy got up and said “80% is a wrong figure! More than 95% people do not understand it !!”). For many people, composting is used to refer to several types of biological process often calling it “anaerobic digestion”. The microbes used and the process involved are quite different between composting and anaerobic digestion.
Ingredients for Bio Composting
Bio Composting organisms require four important ingredient to function well:

1. Improves the soil structure.
2. Add nutrients to the soil / make the nutrients available to the crop
3. Secret certain growth promoting substances
4. Under certain conditions exhibit antifungal activities and there by protect the plants from pathogenic fungus
5. Enhances seed germination
6. Increase the soil fertility
7. Increase the agricultural productivity
8. The nitrogen fixed or phosphate solubilized will be beneficial to the
subsequent crops also.
The major, popularly used and commercially produced Bio Fertilizers are Nitrogen fixing bacterial fertilizers (Azotobacter Culture, Azospirillum Culture, Rhizobium Culture) and Phosphate solubilizing bacterial fertilizers (Pseudomonas Culture). However, currently their applications for other useful elements like Potash, Sulphur, Zincetc are also increasing.

All organisms require the six elements CHNOPS in sizable quantities, and that these minerals may occur in different forms. Depending on whether the local environment is aerobic or anaerobic, the exact chemical form of any of these elements may change quickly and drastically. Example: : If the soil becomes waterlogged and anaerobic, sulfate will be converted into hydrogen sulfide and nitrate into nitrogen gas or ammonia (via anaerobic respiration). As the water recedes and the soil becomes aerobic again, the ammonia is oxidized back to nitrate in stages. All of this (and many other processes) occur largely because of the activities of soil microbes. Without these microbes, life as we know it would not occur because necessary elements would remain tied up in unusable chemical forms and gradually be removed by sedimentation. To maintain the level of these components it is essential that they undergo a regular process of recycling. Different microorganisms bring about this process of recycling through various transformations.

Carbon Cycle

The most important element in the biological realm and substance that serve as the cornerstone of the cell structure is carbon. It constituents about 40-50% of all living organisms, yet the ultimate source is the CO₂ that exists in a perennially short supply, only 0.03% of the earth’s atmosphere, which undergoes a cyclic change from an oxidized to reduced state. The concentration of carbon in living matter (18%) is almost 100 times greater than its concentration in the earth (0.19%). Hence, living things extract carbon from their non-living environment. For life to continue, this carbon must be recycled. Carbon exists in the nonliving environment as carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the atmosphere and dissolved in water (forming HCO₃") carbonate rocks (limestone and coral = CaCO₃) deposits of coal, petroleum, and natural gas derived from once-living things dead organic matter, e.g., humus in the soil. Carbon enters the biotic world through the action of autotrophs: primarily photoautotrophs, like plants and algae, that use the energy of light to convert carbon dioxide to organic matter through photosynthesis and to a small extent, chemoautotrophs - bacteria and Archaeans that do the same but use the energy derived from the oxidation of molecules in their substrate.

Reducing the input costs in farming, especially agrochemicals and improving the yields of farm products in environmentally sustainable way, is one of the most important challenges. World over, the understanding of alternative eco-friendly inputs and intelligent integration of such products with the farming practices are the areas which need to be emphasized, understood and demonstrated. Our experience of working with farmers in different regions has convinced us that they all are looking for alternative, eco-friendly and cost effective inputs and the only way to convince them is practical demonstrations. Eco safe farming is a global challenge and needs combined efforts of NGOs and farmers bodies, private and public sector industries and scientists in the institutions and universities. There are many challenges and many success stories and some typical once are listed here.
1. POTATO IN BIHAR
Bihar Government planned a major program in 2011 – 12 for taking up large scale organic farming. A group of experts was invited to discuss and help this initiative. After a systematic planning and joint participation of the state Government, public and private sectors a package of bio inputs was prepared. The results with respect to productivity increase were extremely encouraging as reproduced from a case study paper in BOX – 1

On my left was a globally well-known environment activist talking about all the evils of chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticides. On my right was the President of Pesticide Association with equally strong views about how the chemical pesticides have greatly helped in feeding the hungry world. My task was further made difficult by a large lobby of green activists in the audience and also a number of seasoned industrialists with opposite views. Such a scenario is becoming increasingly common.
In January 2009, the European Council Directive 91-414 was passed banning a total of more than 40% chemical pesticides (David Frabotta, FCI – March, 2009). Earlier in 1993, there were 740 active ingredients available in European markets. By August 2008, however, 394 of these were no longer allowed and 113 more were still under review. It was predicted that in next 5 – 10 years, 85% of these could disappear from European markets. The Swedish chemical agency shortlisted nearly 21 chemical under criteria of ‘Endocrine’ ( The Endocrine criteria are defined as any substances that trigger class – 3 carcinogenic effect and class - 3 reproductive effect). These are new herbicides like :loxynil, Gluctosinate, etc. The two major class of fungicides are described as Triazoles and Dithiocarbonate. Triazoles are major weapon against septoria – a major fungal diseases in cereals.
BEYOND GREEN REVOLUTION

Introduction
The majority of the world’s population consumes plant-based meals, which frequently lack important micronutrients and fail to satisfy recommended daily allowances (RDAs). Micronutrient inadequacy, also known as ‘hidden hunger,’ affects one in every three individuals worldwide (FAO, 2013). The growing worldwide population, expected to reach 9.8 billion by 2050 (United Nations, 2017), has increased the demand for high-quality food. Unfortunately, the emphasis on food quantity has frequently outweighed issues of food quality. Undernourishment is a major issue, especially in emerging and undeveloped nations where diets are inadequate and largely reliant on staple commodities such as grains (Datta & Vitolins, 2016). Poor lifestyle and dietary choices contribute to food insecurity (Gakidou et al., 2017). To address endemic nutritional deficits, fortification or supplementing techniques have been used (Bouis et al., 2017). Biofortification, which involves breeding nutrient-rich staple crop types, is a low-cost and environmentally friendly way to give important micronutrients. While biofortified staple foods may not contain as many minerals and vitamins as supplements or industrially fortified items, they do help to improve daily micronutrient intake throughout the lifespan (Bouis et al., 2011). Success stories of biofortification include lysine and tryptophan rich quality protein maize won World food prize 2000, Vitamin A rich orange sweet potato won World food prize 2016. It is vital to highlight that biofortification alone cannot completely remove micronutrient deficiencies; however, it can supplement existing initiatives and help vulnerable groups.

The ecosystem recycles nutrients. Approximately forty chemical elements are thought to be necessary for the existence of living things. The earth’s system contains finite materials, hence the only way to maintain it functioning continually is to regenerate the components.
Definition
The term “biogeochemical cycle” refers to the periodic transfer of elements between living organisms (the biotic phase) and their non-living ,(abiotic) environments, such as rocks, water, and air. These cycles, which primarily involve water, oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus, are essential to life.
While micronutrients like Cu, Fe, and Co are derived from soil-based edaphic cycles, macronutrients like C, H, O, P, K, N, S, Mg, and Ca are cyclized with the atmosphere.There are two types of bio-geochemical cycles: gaseous and sedimentary cycles. The soil serves as the primary reservoir for nutrients in sedimentary cycles, such as the phosphorus and sulfur cycles, while the atmosphere and oceans serve as the primary reservoirs for nutrients in gaseous cycles, such as the nitrogen, carbon, and oxygen cycles. The biotic and abiotic systems are involved in both cycles. Both are fueled by energy flow and connected to either the hydrologic or water cycles.

Abstract
Managing weeds in agricultural productivity poses a formidable challenge. An increasingly common weed control strategy in ecologically friendly farming systems is integrated weed management, which involves bioherbicides. Ensuring global food security and environmental safety heavily relies on the sustainability of agricultural production. Worldwide, sustainable agricultural approaches, including the maintenance of a permanent layer of soil cover, the minimization of soil disruption, the implementation of regular crop rotations, the practice of integrated weed control, and the adoption of conservation agriculture, are becoming increasingly popular. Bio-herbicides are commonly derived from plants containing phytotoxic allelochemicals or specialized bacteria that can induce diseases and reduce the population of weeds within a given area. However, bio-herbicides have demonstrated significant potential in inhibiting the germination and spread of weed seeds. Bio-herbicides offer a promising, environmentally friendly, promising solution for weed control, as they are derived from natural sources such as bacteria, plants, or biochemical compounds. This study investigates the effectiveness, environmental benefits, and challenges of using bio-herbicides to achieve sustainable weed control. Bio-herbicides possess the capacity to reduce dependency on artificial pesticides, eradicate unintended harm to non-target organisms, and foster a more harmonious ecosystem by employing biological agents to target particular weeds selectively.

Introduction

In the middle of the 1900s, the world experienced a big increase in people, leading to a greater need for food. This demand for more food pushed for a farming revolution called the “green revolution.” This revolution used chemicals to help grow more crops and fight plant diseases. But using lots of these chemicals caused problems for the environment and people’s health. Even with all these chemicals, a large amount of food (up to 25% of what’s grown) is still lost to diseases each year. By 2050, we might need to double how much food we make. To do this without harming the environment or health, we’re looking for new ways. Some ideas include making plants that are genetically modified, creating plant varieties that resist pests naturally, and using helpful microorganisms like certain bacteria and fungi. These helpful organisms can be used in different ways, like making soil healthier or protecting plants.

The microorganisms colonizing plant roots generally include bacteria, algae, fungi, protozoa and actinomycetes. Enhancement of plant growth and development by application of these microbial populations is well evident. Among different microbial populations present in the rhizosphere, bacteria are the most abundant microorganisms. Various genera of bacteria, Pseudomonas, Enterobacter, Bacillus, Variovorax, Klebsiella, Burkholderia, Azospirillum, Serratia and Azotobacter, cause a pronounced effect on plant growth and are termed as plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). PGPR play a significant role in enhancing plant growth and development both under non stress and stress conditions by a number of direct and indirect mechanisms. Microbes exert key functions in ecosystems being involved in nitrogen fixation, phosphorus solubilization, soil formation, and production of siderophores, plant growth regulators and organic acids as well as protection by enzymes like ACC-deaminase, chitinase and glucanase.

Bio-Inputs introduces the concept, scope, and functional diversity of biological inputs used in sustainable agriculture and natural farming. The chapter classifies bio-inputs by core components, including microorganisms, biological extracts, and biomolecules, and then by functions such as bio-fertilizers, bio-stimulants, biomejorators, and biological control agents. It also presents microbial and biological inputs within Integrated Pest Management, emphasizing biopesticides, biofungicides, and plant-defense elicitors. The concept of insect pest management and the strategies employed have evolved over the time. With the increased emphasis on safe agricultural practices and elevated demand for safe and healthy food, the various solutions for pest management have shifted more towards use of biocontrol agents. Bio- rational pest management methods have now evolved as important pillar of the integrated pest management to replace the synthetic insecticides and also other associated advantages. They include the use of botanical pesticides, insect growth regulators, pheromones and allelochemicals. The major positive attributes associated with all of them are their low mammalian toxicity, safety to beneficial and non-target organisms, higher specificity, low risk of development of resistance and low environmental persistence. Though bio-rational insecticides are considered to be safe, in an organic ecosystem, it should be done with caution because over reliance on them for longer periods may facilitate the target insect pests to develop some kind of resistance against them. So, proper deliberations on the positive and negative attributes of bio rational pest management strategies should be done so as to facilitate their long term usage in organic farming.

Introduction

Soil plays a vital role in fulfilling fundamental human requirements, such as the provision of sustenance and water, while also serving as the primary medium for supporting biodiversity. The sustainability of soil in the 21st century is dependent upon not only the implementation of effective management practices by farmers, foresters, and land-planners, but also on government regulations, policies, marketing strategies, and subsidies (Mishra et al., 2017). The increasing influence of human activities on the Earth’s natural environment has led to significant global challenges concerning the interplay of planetary and public health (J. Huang et al., 2018).

Introduction 
Carbon rich solid residue named as biochar produced by heating biomass in a procedure recognized as pyrolysis. During pyrolysis, biomass, including crop and forestry residues, manure, municipal and industrial wastes, is broken down at temperatures exceeding 400°C, with minute to no oxygen present. This procedure results in the making of syngas, bio oil, and biochar. Given its high carbon content, approximately 60% to 90%, biochar addition in soil has been recommended as an effective, long-term method for capturing atmospheric CO2 within terrestrial ecosystems. In addition to its role in reducing greenhouse gas productions and carbon sequestration, biochar offers various advantages for soil quality enhancement. Incorporating biochar into soils can boost crop yields by improvising the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the soil, such as increasing water retention, adjusting soil pH, and enhancing microbial activity (Zoghlami and Paës, 2019). The production of biochar offer several benefits such as carbon sequestration in which produced biochar captures carbon that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere (Rahimi, Anand and Gautam, 2022). This helps mitigate climate change by locking carbon in a steady form for a lengthy period, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. When added to soil, biochar can enhance its physical, chemical, and biological properties. It improves water preservation, nutrient accessibility, and microbial activity, leading to increased soil fertility and crop yields (Saikia et al., 2015)perennial grass species Arundo donax L. was pyrolysed in a fixed-bed reactor and characterization was performed for the liquid and the solid products. The fast-changing world has put a vast amount of pressure on the energy system [1]. That has resulted in a sudden increase in global energy consumption. For several centuries fossil fuels have been the bedrock of energy generation, powering industries, households, and transportation. Apart from this mounting evidence of climate change has been characterized by rising global temperatures, extreme weather conditions and rise in the sea level are been directly linked to the emissions generated by the combustion of these fossil fuels. The harmful effect of the greenhouse gases on the environment has impacted globally. We strongly need much safer and more sustainable energy sources. In addition, the main reason behind international relations instability is often linked with the fossil fuel-dependent economies, coupled with the finite nature of such resources, which has underscored the requirement of diversifying the energy mix. Biochar an alternatives to fossil fuels emerging as carbon-rich material produced by heating biomass in anaerobic conditions this product is known as pyrolysis [2]. This substance has the potential that be derived from a variety of biomass waste streams, including animal excreta, food scraps, forestry residues municipal solid waste, and agriculture by-products. Transforming organic waste into stable, carbon-rich products, biochar offers a dual benefit that addresses waste management challenges while contributing to carbon storage. Biochar is a versatile material that has exceptional properties that make it a promising alternative for addressing various environmental and energy challenges [3]. It has unique characteristics that include high porosity, creating a network of interconnected pores that enhance its surface area and reactivity, functional groups that enables biochar to react with a wide variety of substances. The substantial surface area provides ample sites for adsorption a process where pollutants bind to the biochar surface. The material high cation exchange capacity allows it to retain essential nutrients by preventing their leaching and helping in enhancing soil fertility [4]. However, biochar has remarkable stability providing resistant degradation and persisting in the environment for extended periods, making it an effective carbon sequestration tool. The economic benefits of biochar are equally persuasive, as it can be produced from low cost readily available biomass waste thereby reducing waste disposal costs. Furthermore, the process of creating biochar is really simple and effective for the environment and contributes to the overall appeal. There are several studies have underscored biochar’s effectiveness in removing pollutants from water spills [5]. To produce biochar there are several thermochemical conversion techniques are been employed, including torrefaction, gasification, flash carbonization, pyrolysis, and hydrothermal carbonization. among this pyrolysis is the most prevalent method. This process involves biomass heating without oxygen that results in organic matter decomposition and the formation of biochar and bio-oil. Pyrolysis is done under a state of low oxygen, where the biomass is degraded the biomass type, residence time, and thermal efficiency at a given temperature, heating, and feedstock type impact the item formed in due process. The fundamental characteristics and structure of biochar also depend upon the kind of reactor used in the carbonization process [6] organic material synthesized through pyrolysis of different biomass (plant or animal waste. Currently available technologies for characterizing biochar include nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Raman spectroscopy, Braeuer Emmett Teller (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermos Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) [7,8]. Identification of enteric bacilli is of prime importance for controlling intestinal infections. This can be achieved by preventing contamination of food and water by a group of bacteria belonging to family – Enterobacteriaceae which are found in the intestinal tract of human beings and lower mammals. The microorganisms of this family are short, gram negative, non spore forming bacilli. Such common enteric bacteria are a) pathogens such as species of Salmonella and Shigella b) occasional pathogens like species of Proteus and Klebsiella and c) normal intestinal flora like species of Escherichia and Enterobactor.

Transforming organic materials, such as agricultural residues, food waste, or biomass, into valuable bio-based products is crucial for waste management. This process, called biochemical conversion, employs various enzymatic, microbial, or chemical reactions to break down complex organic compounds into simpler molecules like sugars, fatty acids, and amino acids. These intermediates can then be further processed into biofuels, pharmaceuticals, and other bio-derived materials, making this process promising for sustainable energy and resource management. Biochemical conversion typically includes pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, fermentation, and purification. It offers a sustainable alternative to conventional fossil fuel-based production methods, reducing environmental impacts and dependence on non-renewable resources.

The synthesis of humic substances is the least understood and the most intriguing aspect of humus chemistry. This has been one of the intensely- researched subjects for a long time. Formation of humic substances takes several pathways during the decay of plant and animal remains in soil and the four important ones are shown in Fig. 8.1.

The classical theory by Waksman advocated humic substances as modified lignins (Pathway 1), but a vast majority of current crop of investigators favour a mechanism involving quinones (Pathways 2 and 3). Including sugar-amine condensation pathway (Pathway 4), all the four pathways must be considered as likely mechanisms for the synthesis of humic and fulvic acids in nature. It is absolutely possible that these four pathways may operate in all soils, though not to the same extent or in the same order of importance. 

Bioclimatology examines relationships between climate and living organisms, including crops, livestock and humans. It draws on biology, ecology, meteorology, architecture and physiology to explain how temperature, humidity, radiation and wind influence development, comfort, health and productivity. This chapter introduces bioclimatic indices such as the Temperature-Humidity Index, Humidex, wind chill and thermal-comfort measures. Agricultural applications include crop and livestock suitability, heat-stress assessment, housing design, work planning and development of resilient farming systems. Understanding biological responses to climatic conditions supports appropriate management interventions and helps protect productivity and welfare. Bioclimatic analysis therefore connects atmospheric conditions with practical decisions involving plants, animals and people.

For many soil borne diseases, effective and economic control methods are not available. Several soil borne pathogens have developed resistance to many fungicides. The beneficial microbes are also affected by fungicides. Many fungicides pose health hazards by polluting food and water and cause direct toxicity of heavy metals and carcinogenic risk. In the context of growing worldwide awareness of environmental pollution and development of fungicide resistant strains of pathogens, biological method of suppression of disease causing organisms have been recognized as the safest approach for plant disease management.

Biological control of plant diseases is the suppression of populations of plant pathogens by living organisms. Amongst beneficial microorganisms, isolates can be selected which are highly effective against pathogens and can be multiplied on artificial media. Application of such selected and mass produced antagonists in high densities once or several times during a growing season is called “augmentative biological control”.

Bioconversion refers to the recycling and reprocessing of organic waste materials using the system of biological decomposition or biodegradation into value added products. Composting is one way of conversion of organic waste into manures. It is defined as a method of solid waste management whereby the organic component of the solid waste stream is biologically decomposed under controlled conditions to a state in which it can be handled, stored or applied to the land without adversely affecting the environment.

Composting provides a partial solution to an issue of great concern in many communities. All around the world, landfills are filling up, garbage incineration is becoming increasingly unpopular, and other waste disposal options are becoming ever harder to find. Composting provides a way not only of reducing the amount of waste that needs to be disposed of, but also of converting it into a product that is useful for agriculture. Composting reduces waste, makes us less dependent on landfills, and decreases greenhouse gas emissions. Composting recycles essential nutrients back into the soil and promotes a prolific soil ecosystem.

Abstract

With increasing population and subsequent human requirements; the generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) has increased all over the world. In India, the safe disposal of the municipal solid waste still remaines a problem for the authorities concerned. Depending upon the nature and type of the MSW, there are physical and chemical methods for the disposal of the waste, but these methods have their own limitations. Those limitations may be overcome by biological methods. Higher number of microorganisms are present in MSW which may either be pathogenic or nonpathogenic. These microorganisms may play a vital role in bioconversion of MSW into compost. The compost thus produced is useful in increasing soil fertility and reducing the concentration of the waste.

Introduction

More than a third is covered by drylands in the terrestrial land surface, which have a harsh and vulnerable natural condition (Maier et al., 2014). Due to insufficient water availability, dry areas have a scant population of vascular plants, as well as poor availability of the nutrient turnover with poor availability of the resources as a result of severe temperatures (Adeel, 2008). Biological soil crusts or Biocrusts commonly protects the soil surface in dry environments and it is considered “ecosystem engineers” of arid and semiarid areas, as well as signs of ecosystem health (Briggs and Morgan, 2011; Bowker et al., 2008). They are connected in dryland ecosystem restoration level or degradation (Assouline et al., 2015). When compared to chemical or physical crusts, biocrust is the largest word that explicitly implies that these are the crusts which are dependent on the living organisms’ activity.

Pesticides are the chemical substances that kill pests and herbicides are the chemicals that kill weeds. In the context of soil, pests are fungi, bacteria, insects, worms, and nematodes etc. that cause damage to field crops. Thus, in broad sense pesticides are insecticides, fungicides, bactericides, herbicides and nematicides that are used to control or inhibit plant diseases and insect pests. Although wide-scale application of pesticides and herbicides is an essential part of augmenting crop yields; excessive use of these chemicals leads to the microbial imbalance, environmental pollution and health hazards. An ideal pesticide should have the ability to destroy target pest quickly and should be able to degrade nontoxic substances as quickly as possible.

The ultimate “sink” of the pesticides applied in agriculture is soil. Soil being the storehouse of multitudes of microbes, in quantity and quality, receives the chemicals in various forms and acts as a scavenger of harmful substances. The efficiency and the competence to handle the chemicals vary with the soil and its physical, chemical and biological characteristics.

Abstract

Various cropping systems and ecologies illustrate the positive use of chemicals both as fertilizers and pesticides and organic/biological sources within the frame work of Integrated Plant Nutrition and Plant Protection System (IPPS). While considering the organic/biological sources, green manures seem to be the best alternative that may largely suffice to the organic matter requirements of the soil under crop cultivation. Green manuring can be defined as a practice of ploughing or turning into the soil undecomposed green plant tissues for the purpose of improving physical structure as well as fertility of the soil. “Green manure” refers to fresh plant matter, which is added to the soil largely for supplying the nutrients contained in its biomass. The agricultural practices consisting of growing and ploughing under a green crop or addition of a green organic matter in the form of leaves and other succulent parts from outside to improve soil productivity is known as green manuring. In this review, advantages of green manuring, decomposition of green manure,   process of decomposition, factors affecting decomposition and effects of green manuring have been discussed in detail.

8.1 Introduction

Rising petroleum prices, increasing threat to the environment from exhaust emissions and global warming have generated an intense international interest in developing alternative non-petroleum fuels for engines. The use of vegetable oil in internal combustion engines is not a recent innovation. Rudolf Diesel (18581913), creator of the diesel cycle engines, used peanut vegetable oil to demonstrate its invention in Paris in 1900. In 1912, Diesel said, “The use of vegetable oils as engine fuel may seem negligible today. Nevertheless, such oils may become, in the passing years, as important as oil and coal tar presently.” Nowadays, it is known that oil is a finite resource and that its price tends to increase exponentially, as its reserves have being decreasing¹.

India ranks sixth in the world in total energy consumption and needs to accelerate the development of the sector to meet its growth aspirations. The country, though rich in coal and abundantly endowed with renewable energy in the form of solar, wind, hydro and bio-energy has very small hydrocarbon reserves (0.4 % of the world’s reserve). India, like many other developing countries, is a net importer of energy, more than 25 percent of primary energy needs being met through imports mainly in the form of crude oil and natural gas. The rising oil import bill has been the focus of serious concerns due to the pressure it has placed on scarce foreign exchange resources and is also largely responsible for energy supply shortages. The sub-optimal consumption of commercial energy adversely affects the productive sectors, which in turn hampers economic growth².

7.1 Introduction

A biodiesel fuel is an environmentally friendly, renewable, biodegradable fuel that is produced at domestic facilities from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled grease from restaurants. In accordance with the Renewable Fuel Standard, biodiesel meets the requirements for biomass-based diesel as well as the requirements for advanced biofuels as a whole. Biodiesel is distinct from renewable diesel, also known as “green diesel.” In its pure, unblended form, biodiesel is also known as B100 or neat biodiesel. Biodiesel is used to fuel compression-ignition engines in the same way as petroleum diesel. Alternatively, biodiesel is a liquid biofuel that can be used in diesel engines alone or blended with diesel oil. The fuel is obtained through the chemical conversion of vegetable oils or animal fats combined with alcohol.

11.1 Biodiesel Chemistry

Biodiesel is a mixture of methyl esters of long chain fatty acids like lauric, palmitic, stearic, oleic and so on. It is produced by the transesterification of animal fats and vegetable oils – all of which belong to a group of organic esters called triglycerides. Typical examples are rape/canola oil, soyabean oil, sunflower oil, palm oil and its derivatives, etc. from vegetable sources, beef and sheep tallow and poultry oil from animal sources and also from used cooking oil. The chemistry is basically the same irrespective of the feedstock. The chemistry of biodiesel is given in Fig. 11.1.

Abstract

Irrigation tanks (Traditional water harvesting structures) are our heritage handed over to us by our ancestors and are the lifelines of villages. Tanks are small irrigation structures predominantly serve small and marginal farming communities to sustain the agriculture production by supplementing the monsoon rains. There will be festivities in the villages if its irrigation tanks get filled. A proper maintenance of the tanks will prevent famine, starvation and unemployment and bring in prosperity. In most of the Southern states in India, the major threats to tanks are mainly from the encroachers, inefficiency in the functioning of tank system and improper use by the government itself. Tank irrigation in Andhra Pradesh has played a vital role in the development of its agricultural economy. There are around 79,000 small and minor irrigation tanks providing water for irrigation and domestic use, supporting grazing land, fuel wood growth and ground water recharge. Many of these tanks are hydrologically linked in chains (called tank cascades) that cut across administrative boundaries. With deteriorating tank systems, marginal and small farmers are increasingly at the mercy of monsoon and are forced into a cycle of deprivation and debt. These ancient irrigation systems still function as a crucial element in supplying water for agriculture, and they constitute one of the richest sources of wetland biodiversity in the country. A tank system in a cascade has a small reservoir catchment, the reservoir, a strip of trees downstream of the reservoir that act as wind-breaking barrier, paddy fields, and the village. The village tanks play significant role in food production sector and provide employment in the rural sector. In addition to providing irrigation water, the tanks made the micro-climate pleasant and cool, provided a rich biodiversity and agro-biodiversity

The word biodiversity refers to the variety of living organisms (flora and fauna). Biodiversity or Biological diversity is defined as the variability among all living organisms from all sources, including terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and ecological complexes of which they are part. Wilson, 1988 defined ‘Biological diversity’ or ‘biodiversity’ as that part of nature which includes the differences in genes among the individuals of a species, the variety and richness of all the plant and animal species at different scales in space i.e. local, regional, country wise and global, andvarious types of ecosystems- both terrestrial and aquatic-within a defined area.

The diversity of agro-ecosystems

Biological diversity deals with the degree of nature’s variety in the biosphere. This variety can be observed at three levels i.e., genetic, species and ecosystem.

a) Genetic Diversity

Genetic diversity refers to the variation at the level of individual genes. Tremendous amount of genetic diversity exists within individual species. This genetic variability is responsible for the different characters in species. Genetic diversity is the raw material from which new species arise through evolution. Today, the genetic diversity is made use to breed new crop varieties, disease resistant crops.

Organic producers, on the other hand, are looking for varieties that are suited to their local climatic and soil conditions and are not susceptible to disease and pest attack. Research has shown that in general these characteristics are more likely to be found in the older native cultivars. For example, conventional wheat grown in an organic system will have reduced protein content, whereas the selection of a variety suitable for the particular growing conditions will provide higher protein, and thus higher baking quality wheat to be grown. Research has also indicated that yields and disease resistance are better in native cultivars as opposed to modern varieties for vegetables (tomato, cucumber and melon) grown in an organic system.

Biodiversity provides the building blocks for sustainable food, health and livelihood security systems. It is the feedstock for both the biotechnology industry and a climate-resilient farming system. Because of its importance for human well-being and survival, a Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was adopted at the UN Conference on Environment and Development held at Rio de Janeiro in 1992. The Convention’s triple goals are conservation, sustainable use, and equitable sharing of benefits. CBD defines biological diversity as follows:

Variability among living organisms from all sources including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part; this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems.

Demographic explosion, environment pollution, habitat destruction, enlarging ecological footprint, widespread hunger and unsustainable lifestyles, and potential adverse changes in climate all threaten the future of human food, water, health and livelihood security systems. 2010 appears to mark the beginning of uncertain weather patterns and extreme climate behaviour. Events like temperature rise, drought, flood, coastal storms and rise in sea level are likely to present new challenges to the public, professionals and policy makers. Biodiversity has so far served as the feedstock for sustainable food and health security and can play a similar role in the development of climate-resilient farming and livelihood systems. Biodiversity is also the feedstock for the biotechnology industry. Unfortunately, genetic erosion and species extinction are now occurring at an accelerated pace due to habitat destruction, alien species invasion and spread of agricultural systems characterised by genetic homogeneity. Genetic homogeneity increases genetic vulnerability to biotic and abiotic stresses. To generate widespread interest in biodiversity conservation, the UN General Assembly has declared 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity.
