I have known Dr R.S. Chauhan al through his professional carrier. I came in his contact when he was a student, a research worker, a professional colleague. He is very hard working, sincere and dedicated scientist and teacher. I observed his remarkable skills, unwavering dedication and strong commitment for upliftment of research and the profession. He is known as an excellent teacher. He devised simple understandable means for complex topics.
His work on Panchgavya has won lots of appreciation at all levels. In fact he is a person who proved scientifically the application of components of Panchgavya on control of some untreatable disease like cancer.
I have absolutely no hesitation in saying that he is the “Father of Cowpathy”. He proved the efficacy and application of products of cow origin with scientific validation.
To be true, even today whenever I have some query, I invariably consult him because I am of the opinion that he has a very strong basic background. May God always shower his blessings on him.

From an early age, Dr. Chauhan demonstrated an innate love for animals and a deep sense of responsibility toward their well-being. For Dr. Chauhan, the rigorous academic journey involved mastering a wide array of subjects, including animal Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, and Microbiology. His exemplary performance, as evidenced by his impressive score of 80.3%, highlights his ability to excel even under pressure. What sets Dr. Chauhan apart is not just his academic excellence but also his holistic approach to learning. Dr. Chauhan, a celebrated veterinary doctor whose groundbreaking work in rural animal healthcare earned him international accolades, began his journey in a modest setting. Born in 1958 in a  small village near Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, Amit grew up surrounded by fields, animals, and the rustic charm of rural India. This environment would unknowingly shape his path toward becoming one of the most sought-after veterinary doctors in the country.
A Humble Beginning
The Chauhan family owned a small plot of farmland and a handful of livestock, which formed their primary source of livelihood. His father, was a hardworking farmer who toiled from sunrise to sunset in the fields, while his mother, Prakash Vati Devi, managed the household and cared for their cows and buffaloes. Despite their modest means, the family placed immense value on education. Ramswaroop, an Intermediate passout in his youth which was quite an achievement few in the village had accomplished—dreamed of giving his children a brighter future.
Dr. Chauhan’s early years were spent observing the rhythm of village life. The crowing of roosters, the mooing of cows, and the occasional bleat of goats were the background score of his childhood. While other children enjoyed chasing buffaloes or playing in the fields, Dr. Chauhan was different. His deep empathy for animals was evident even as a child, as he often helped his mother care for sick cows or newborn calves. It was during these moments that the seeds of his future profession were sown.

Soon after completing masters in Veterinary Pathology, Dr Chauhan joined as Teaching Associate in the department of Microbiology and Public Health in Pantnagar and taught BVSc &AH students systemic Bacteriology, meat hygiene and milk hygiene. However, this period was very short of only few months as he joined as Assistant Professor/ Assistant Disease Investigation Officer in HAU Hisar (1983-1996) and was entrusted disease investigation besides teaching of UG and PG students. He taught hygiene to BHSc students, and Epidemiology, Zoonosis, Livestock and Poultry Disease Investigation courses to masters and doctoral students. He also guided several masters and doctoral thesis research on pesticide toxicity, reoviral infection, and protozoan parasite infections. He has written a book on “Text book of Veterinary Clinical and Laboratory Diagnosis which was released by Hon’ble Central Education Minister Km Shailja ji. Students were fond of Dr Chauhan because of his teaching skills, easy to learn process and friendly behaviour; among them are Dr Naresh Jindal, Dr NK Mahajan, Dr SK Khurana, Dr Rajsh Khurana, Dr RK Vaid, Dr Devendra Bist etc.
In Feb1996 he joined at Pantnagar as Associate Professor and was given responsibility of Veterinary Pathology teaching to BVSc&AH, MVSc and PhD students. The teaching skills of Dr Chauhan were appreciable and were very useful to the students. He prepared power point presentation of each and every topic with photographs, line drawings, video and graphs/ bar diagrams etc to make it more understandable to the students. Particularly Dr Chauhan’s teaching include the Indian perspectives including animal diseases which showed the right things present in the field. Many disease conditions are different in India in comparison to other countries; some important diseases present in India are mentioned in the books of foreign writers and similarly many diseases occurs in other countries are not having any presence in India. So it is very important to impart education to students in right perspective which they will face in the field. Dr Chauhan always discusses the epidemiology part of the disease whether the disease in present in India or not; if present then what is the magnitude of disease. Such information is not available in literature, it comes by virtue of experience.

What is Panchgavya?
Panchgavya is an ancient, holistic preparation derived from cows, revered in Hindu culture for its spiritual, agricultural, and medicinal benefits. The term “Panchgavya” comes from Sanskrit, where “Pancha” means five and “Gavya” refers to products obtained from cows. True to its name, Panchgavya consists of five components sourced from cows: three primary ingredients (cow dung, cow urine, and cow milk) and two secondary ingredients (curd and ghee).
These ingredients are mixed in a specific proportion and allowed to ferment, creating a potent concoction. When applied in Ayurveda, this preparation is often referred to as “Cowpathy,” a traditional practice believed to harness the natural healing properties of cow- derived substances. In contemporary times, the uses of Panchgavya have extended beyond religious rituals to applications in agriculture, medicine, and even environmental conservation.

Dr. Chauhan quickly rose to prominence due to his innovative approach to Veterinary care. While he treated animals of all kinds, his work with cows became the cornerstone of his career. Recognizing the cultural, economic, and ecological significance of these animals, he delved into research on common bovine diseases, nutrition, and sustainable farming practices. His dedication led to the development of innovative diagnostic protocols, treatment and preventive measures, improving the health and productivity of cows across the region.

Grain legumes, also known as pulses, are vital to sustainable agriculture due to their roles in enhancing soil fertility, providing essential nutrition, and supporting environmental sustainability. By establishing symbiotic relationships with nitrogen fixing bacteria, legumes naturally enrich soil with nitrogen, reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers and fostering sustainable farming practices. Their inclusion in crop rotations not only boosts soil health but also supports food security, especially in developing countries where they are a key source of plant based protein and nutrients. The impact of climate change, including rising temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and increased frequency of extreme weather events, presents significant challenges to agriculture. In this context, grain legumes demonstrate considerable climate resilience. Their drought tolerance, heat resistance, and ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen make them well-suited to withstand climate stress. Legumes exhibit mechanisms such as deep root systems, efficient water use, and adaptability to diverse environmental conditions, contributing to their robustness in the face of climate variability. To bolster the role of grain legumes in climate-resilient agriculture, climate-smart practices and technological advancements are essential. These include optimizing planting strategies, adopting water-efficient methods, and breeding for improved resilience traits. Addressing challenges such as climate variability, pest pressures, and resource limitations is crucial for maintaining the benefits of legumes. Abstract
Legumes are an excellent group of fertility restorer crops which can be grown either as sole crop or as a component crop in the cropping system. As they are tolerant to drought condition, they can be grown throughout the year. The yield of legume crop is largely depending on pest, diseases and weeds. Among these weeds plays a major role as the weed seed bank inside the soil influence the weed population in the cropping season. Hence it is important to manage the weed seed bank for better productivity of legumes. Though legumes are short duration and fast growing crops, the germination percentage of weed seed bank will determine the final yield of legumes. There are many strategies to which the weed seed bank can be controlled to tolerable level before which the weed seed bank present in the soil has to estimate. Annual weed seed bank can be minimized by killing the weeds before they set seeds, harvest weeds, crop rotation, cover crops, inter cropping and ensiling. Weed seed bank depletion can be done by tillage, tricking the weed seeds, conditioning weed seeds, soil solarisation and herbicide application. Thus integrating various technologies may help in effective controlling of weed seeds to tolerable level thereby enhancing the yield of leguminous crops.

Abstract
India shares one fourth of global annual grain legume production and is also largest consumer of it. Weeds are the most severe and widespread biological constraint on agricultural production systems and cause damage to cropped and non-cropped lands. They reduce crop yield and degrade the quality of the produce, besides raising the cost of production. The grain legumesare commonly grown under rainfed/dry land conditions and hence do not receive the best management practices that are required for maximization of crop productivity. Among various production inputs, weed management was found to be the most important one contributing about 31% in pigeon pea, 110% in urdbean and 60 % in mungbean towards total productivity. Effective weed management in grain legumes is essential for optimizing
crop yield and quality. This process involves a multi-faceted approach that integrates cultural, mechanical, and chemical methods to address the challenges posed by diverse weed species and varying environmental conditions. Traditional single-method approaches often fall short due to the complexity and variability of weed problems like development of resistance in weeds. Therefore, an integrated weed management approach becomes effective, combining timely interventions with adaptive strategies to manage weed competition throughout the growing season. This approach not only enhances crop competitiveness and yield but also offers economic and environmental benefits by reducing reliance on broad-spectrum herbicides and promoting sustainable practices. of weed management strategies are crucial to effectively tackle evolving weed populations and changing conditions, ensuring long-term success in grain legume cultivation.

Food insecurity and malnutrition are on the rise globally, impacting millions, especially in rural regions where extreme poverty and food insecurity are deeply rooted. Vulnerable groups, including women, youth, and indigenous peoples, are disproportionately affected. Producing foo  that meets dietary needs and ensuring its availability in the future is essential for sustainable development and food sustainability. Addressing the growing global food security concerns and supporting the increasing population requires the continual expansion of plant-based proteins’ significance. Legumes are excellent sources of proteins, carbohydrates, and both soluble and insoluble dietary fibers. Legumes, with their high dietary fiber and low-fat content, help maintain body weight and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. They are also rich in essential minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and iron, and provide important vitamins like folate, thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), and niacin (B3). Additionally, pulses contain various phytochemicals, including phenolics, flavonoids, phytates, lectins, tannins, saponins, oxalates, enzyme inhibitors, phytosterols, and antimicrobial peptides, which offer numerous potential health benefits. Pulses, essential to human diets for centuries, have seen historically low consumption levels due to underappreciation of their nutritional value. Recognizing their significance, the United Nations designated 10 February as World Pulses Day, and declared the year, 2016 as International Year of Pulses emphasizing their role in promoting healthy diets, sustainable food production, and food security. India is the largest producer of pulses in the world accounting for 25% of the global pulse production. The production and productivity of pulses have slightly decreased due to great emphasis to rice and wheat crops. These crops serve as important pulses grown and consumed all over the world, especially in Africa, South East Asia and America. Legumes serve as a good source of carbohydrates, oil, fibre and proteins. Grain legumes are a major source of food and nutrition globally. However, it has not been possible to enhance gain legume production to the required level, primarily due to the narrow genetic base of most of the legume crops, coupled with changing climatic conditions. Most grain legumes are lacking in desired plant ideotypes and resistance sources for various biotic and abiotic stresses. The genetic diversity conserved in gene banks globally is a major resource for crop breeding programs, but it
is utilized only marginally. Therefore, in order to broaden the genetic base of grain legume crops and enhance the genetic gains made in improvement programs, conventional approaches and modern scientific tools should be integrated in a phased and carefully judged manner. The first phase should focus on the search for desired traits and the infusion of diversity into the cultivated gene pool through use of landraces and CWRs. The second phase should focus on the utilization of advanced selection tools, such as genomics, high-throughput precision phenotyping, and artificial intelligence, to exploit the hidden potential of the available genetic diversity; and the third phase should involve technologies such as mutational breeding, genome editing, and transgenic technologies to improve, modify any novel or alien traits that are not available in the entire crop gene pool. We presume that enrichment of the genetic diversity of cultivated grain legume gene pools, along with simultaneous improvements in their yield and plant type with the aid of advanced scientific tools, will enhance grain legume crop yields to the required level.

Climate change, particularly atmospheric CO2 and temperature, has a complex impact on sustainable food security. Climate change is a significant constraint on legume production globally, which is a crucial food, feed, and fodder source. Legumes fix atmospheric nitrogen through bacteria in root nodules, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and boosting soil C-sequestration. Climate change positively impacts grain legumes by allowing them to allocate above-ground
photosynthates into below-ground parts (nodules), improving rhizospheres’ activities, plant biomass and nutrient use efficacy. However, temperature can also negatively affect grain legumes, leading to flower abortion and abnormal pod filling. However, climate models predict more extreme events in the future, affecting legume growth and development. Heat stress, elevated CO2 concentration, drought, and rainfall variability impact legume crop production, requiring adaptation options. Results show that legumes with C3 fixation pathways show higher photosynthesis, reduced photorespiration, biomass production, and water use efficiency under atmospheric CO2. However, temperature increases lead to faster development, shorter life cycles, and lower yields. Legumes can cope with atmospheric CO2 up to
1000 ppm by storing sucrose and starch. Protein synthesis and water stress also help legumes adapt to changing climates. To achieve targeted yields in changing climatic conditions, agronomic and genetic interventions must be integrated. Targeted breeding programs should select high-yielding, biotic stress-resistant, and abiotic stress-tolerant genotypes adapted to atmospheric CO2 and temperature conditions. In history, some developments were possible through belief and scientific study with evidence to support their claims. Our ancestors made ways of surviving on earth by varying the raw materials and tools. Science had absolutely no place, and all discoveries were derived through the trial-and-error method. The same was for agriculture, tracing back to our roots, the farming system was highly
dependent on the on-farm inputs. However, with the timeline of evolution, the exponential growth of the population demanded speedy growth in agricultural production giving rise to Green Revolution technologies (GRTs) in the mid- 1960s, which introduced high-yielding varieties of crops that were responsive to higher dosages of chemical fertilizers and irrigation and persuaded farmers to resort to intensive monocropping. Since the onset of GRTs in the mid-1960s, food production in India has risen five to ten-fold (Dasgupta, 1977).
However, while the past few decades have seen substantial ‘green revolution’ advances, I admit, the hazards have kept themselves hidden and well concealed--of these are significant adverse impacts on the natural resources, agriculture and its produce and indeed extend to human health (Koner & Laha, 2021). There is further proof that increasing dosages of chemical fertilizers led to an emergence of pest resurgence; pesticides residues considerably exceeding permissible limits contaminated drinking water and/or air often, a drop in biodiversity, nitrogen leaching and groundwater pollution, and soil heavy-metals build-up are very common in intensive agriculture regions (John & Babu, 2021). While such issues contributed to suicides in rural India, their unwarranted use also diminished pollinator populations (Baron et al.,  2017). There are many measures to ease the overwhelming cost burden upon farmers on account of farming and rising costs of cultivation. It pertains to the increased input subsidies made by various state and central governmentsthe fertilizer subsidy, the free supply of electricity for irrigation, the interest subvention on agricultural credit, and the premium subsidy for crop insurance. On the contrary, the recent trends show that 75% constitutes a higher number of electricity subsidies, reserved for agriculture consumers, from 2016-2019.

Introduction
Agriculture is an age-old income generation activity in India. It plays a vital role in India’s economy. One in every two Indians relies on agriculture for livelihood. Over 58% of the rural households depend on agriculture as their principal means of livelihood. Over the period of time, the contribution of agriculture and allied sector in Gross Domestic Products (GDP) in India has declined to 14.4% in 2018- 19 from 51.8% in 1950-51. At current prices, the contributions of industry and services sector are 31.5%, and 54.1%, respectively as against the contributions of industry and services sector were 15.1% and 33.1%, respectively in 1950-51. This decline in share of agriculture and allied sector is result of the shift from traditional agricultural economy to industry and service sectors, this performance are very meagre if we consider the size of the employment in this sector. Presently, more than 50% of the total workforce of the country is employed in agricultural sector contributing to only 14.4% of GDP. With production of agriculture activity 26of $375.61 billion, India is 2nd larger producer of agriculture product in the world after China which has contribution of $991 billion in agriculture sector. GDP of industry sector is $560.97 billion and world rank is 6th. In services sector, India’s world rank is 8th and GDP is $1500 billion (FAENI, 2018- 19).
