18.1 Introduction

The commercially available water quality simulation models with various dimensions (1D, 2D and 3D) and database software designed to quantify movement and concentration of contaminants in lakes, streams, estuaries, and marine environments. The following water quality models were described below (Table 18.1).

18.2 Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code

The Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC) is a multifunctional surface water modeling system, which includes hydrodynamic, sediment-contaminant, and eutrophication components. It has been applied to over 100 water bodies including rivers, lakes, reservoirs, wetlands, estuaries, and coastal ocean regions in support of environmental assessment and management and regulatory requirements. IT is a state-of-the-art hydrodynamic model that can be used to simulate aquatic systems in one, two, and three dimensions. It has evolved over the past two decades to become one of the most widely used and technically defensible hydrodynamic models in the world. It uses stretched or sigma vertical coordinates and Cartesian or curvilinear, orthogonal horizontal coordinates to represent the physical characteristics of a waterbody. It solves three-dimensional, vertically hydrostatic, free surface, turbulent averaged equations of motion for a variable-density fluid. Dynamically-coupled transport equations for turbulent kinetic energy, turbulent length scale, salinity and temperature are also solved. The model allows for drying and wetting in shallow areas by a mass conservation scheme.

SYNOPSIS

The paper introduces the readers to common diseases caused through various agents like deficiency disorders, food and water, air-borne, vector, viruses, and life-styles. Vegetation is a key component in hydrologic modeling. Transpiration, a component in hydrologic cycle, is contributed by vegetation. Most of the hydrologic model thus includes vegetation as a parameter. For accurate and appropriate model output, first requirement is good quality data. Most of the time, the data on vegetation is confusing, as in literature various researcher have used different values for common vegetation parameters. Here some common parameters of some important crops, which yield good quality results, are given.

Kharif crops are generally sown during last week of May and first week of June, while rabi crop are sown during last week of November and first week of December. But this period will vary from region to region as well as depends on variety of crop.

Meaning and Importance of Communication
Communication is the process of exchanging information, ideas, emotions, and messages between individuals or groups. It is a fundamental aspect of human interaction and plays a vital role in personal, social, and professional contexts. Effective communication enables understanding, fosters relationships, and facilitates decision-making.

Communication Gap
A communication gap occurs when there is a breakdown in the communication process, leading to misunderstandings, incomplete information transfer, or misinterpretation of messages. It can happen between individuals, groups, or organizations, and has significant impacts on relationships, productivity, and decision-making.
Reasons for Communication Gaps
Several factors contribute to communication gaps. These reasons can be categorized into three broad areas: individual, organizational, and technological.

Introduction The term ‘communication’ originates from the Latin word ‘Communis’, means the act of imparting, participating, and transmitting or the notion of making something common or sharing it among individuals. Communication encompasses the multifaceted process of sharing and exchanging ideas, emotions, information, and experiences between two or more individuals. It embodies the act of transmitting thoughts or expressions, serving as a vital conduit for the flow of knowledge and understanding. Essentially, it is aligning a sender and receiver for a specific message or series of messages. Leagans (1961) states that communication is the process by which two or more people exchange ideas, facts, feelings or impressions in ways that each gains a common understanding of the meaning, intent and use of messages. Effective communication is not just about issuing orders; it is about fostering comprehension (Suresh, 2003). It beyond imparting knowledge to enabling a profound understands (TNAU, 2012).

3.1. Communication

Leagans (1961) refers as process by which two or more people exchange ideas, facts, feelings or impressions in ways that each gains a common understanding of meaning, intent and use of messages.

Communis is Latin word - meaning common.

Act of getting a sender and a receiver tuned together for a particular message, or a series of message.

The communication module is a device which is used to control the communication between the stations. This chapter explores the different communication modules and their specifications.

5.1 WiFi

ESP8266 WiFi Module is a WiFi serial transceiver module. This chip has a full TCP/IP protocol stack with the computational power onboard. This makes the board simple to use as Wi-Fi connection board. The specification of this board includes, 32-pin QFN package, Integrated RF switch, Integrated RISC processor. It has on-chip memory with external memory interfaces, integrated MAC/baseband processors, Quality of Service management, on chip regulator, Integrated WEP, TKIP, AES, and WAPI engines, 11 b/g/n. It has integrated TCP/IP protocol stack and Integrated PLLs, regulators, DCXO and power management units. It has +19.5dBm output power in 802.11b mode and Power down leakage current of <10uA

5.2 Bluetooth

Bluetooth is a wireless protocol. The recent introduction of Bluetooth with Low Energy extension is also as iBeacon. The advantage of BLE4.0 standard includes the low power consumption, which makes it a better option to be used in smart phones. This facilitates the setup of a mesh network of Bluetooth devices, with lower latency and higher range respect to standard Bluetooth.

This is a SMD BLE module based on TI cc2541 chip. It has low cost, small and easy to use. The preloaded firmware allows to build BLE communications with AT command. It supports communication with iPhone, iPad (iOS 5.0 or greater) and Android 4.3 or greater. It works on frequency: 2.4 GHz ISM band and modulation method is GFSK (Gaussian Frequency Shift Keying). It has transmission power: - DBM, 23-6 DBM, 0 DBM, 6 DBM, can be modified by the AT command. It works on baud rate 9600bps. It can operate on temperature range -40 ~ 125°C.

Another interesting board is the HC-05 Bluetooth module. Specifications of the works Master/Slave configurations. It operates on frequency of 2.4GHz ISM band with Modulation GFSK(Gaussian Frequency Shift Keying).

Meaning of Communication Process
The communication process refers to the systematic steps through which a message is conveyed from a sender to a receiver. It involves the transmission of information through a medium, with feedback confirming whether the message has been received and understood correctly.
Elements of the Communication Process
The communication process consists of the following elements:
• Sender: The person or entity initiating the message.
• Message: The content or information to be communicated.
• Encoding: The process of converting the message into symbols, language, or signals that can be understood by the receiver.
• Medium/Channel: The pathway through which the message is transmitted (e.g., face-to-face, email, phone).
• Receiver: The person or entity for whom the message is intended.
• Decoding: The process by which the receiver interprets and understands the message.
• Feedback: The response of the receiver that indicates whether the message was understood

Sending a message from one place to another place, which are physically separated from each other, is called Communication. The Communication Engineering or Communication Technology deals with the design and development of engineering systems to transmit information from its source, and at the same time, to receive the same information at a remote destination with reliability, accuracy and quality.

The analysis of community mobilization in natural farming requires a systematic framework that captures the complex dynamics of agricultural transformation, social change, and community empowerment. Community mobilization, while grounded in universal principles of participation and empowerment, manifests differently across various settings and circumstances, necessitating flexible yet structured processes that can adapt to local conditions while maintaining effectiveness. This chapter examines the intricate processes and diverse models that guide community mobilization efforts, with particular attention to rural contexts where unique challenges and opportunities shape the mobilization landscape

Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) are widely used metrics for evaluating journal impact. While JCR is based on Web of Science and emphasizes high-impact journals, SJR uses Scopus data, offering broader geographic and disciplinary coverage. This chapter evaluates their relative strengths and weaknesses, focusing on their applicability across disciplines and geographies. Multiple trends also impact research landscapes across the globe (Fig. 3.1).
Comprehensive tables provide a comparative overview of which metric is more suitable for various disciplines and global regions. The assessment of academic journals plays a critical role in research evaluation, academic promotions, and funding decisions. Two prominent journal-ranking systems, JCR and SJR, serve as benchmarks for these purposes. JCR, managed by Clarivate Analytics, primarily focuses on citation frequency over a two-year window. Conversely, SJR, developed by SCImago using Scopus data, incorporates a prestige-weighted citation approach over a three-year period (Fig. 3.2). Several of our Indian Scientific Journals are not covered by JCR. As more than 80 per cent Journals are from Europe and North America. The CLARIVATE covers only few Indian Journals most of which are published by Central Government Agencies

Abstract

Rice blast disease (Pyricularia grisea cavara) which is very much weather sensitive, continues to be an enigmatic problem of West Siang District of Arunachal Pradesh, owing to its geographical location and climate. There is an urgent need of a forewarning system which can provide advance information for outbreak of the diseases attack so that protection measures can be implemented before the actual economic damage of the crop occurs. Two most important statistical techniques for disease forecasting viz. regression analysis and artificial neural network were chosen and forecasting models has been developed for the area and analyzed with local weather data to find best fit for the area and also compared with the Support Vector Machine (SVM) based model RB-Pred developed by Institute of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh. The model based on artificial neural network was found to be best with accuracy of 75-80%, with the present data and algorithm. The accuracy can be improved with long archive records and proper implementation and algorithm selection of the hidden layer, of both ANN and SVM based (being special case of ANN) models, for site-specific forecasting.

Introduction

Droughts are considered to be a significant environmental disaster and have captured the attention of various experts, including environmentalists, ecologists, hydrologists, meteorologists, geologists, and agricultural scientists. These natural calamities are known to occur in almost all climatic zones, regardless of whether they are high- or low-rainfall areas. Generally a decrease in the amount of precipitation received over an extended period such as a season or a year, is the primary cause of droughts. However, other factors such as high temperatures, strong winds, low relative humidity, and characteristics of rainfall (e.g., intensity, duration, onset, and termination) also play a crucial role in their occurrence. It’s important to distinguish a drought from aridity, which is a permanent feature of a climate and is limited to low rainfall areas (Wilhite, 1992). A drought is a temporary phenomenon and can last from a few months to several years. Some people often mistake droughts for heat waves, but Chang and Wallace (1987) highlighted the fundamental difference between these two events. A heat wave typically lasts for a week, while a drought can extend for several months or even years. When a heat wave and a drought coincide, it can lead to dire socio-economic consequences.

To overcome the challenge of popularizing pigeonpea hybrids in the country, it is considered fair enough to compare the hybrid rice with respect to their seed production technology, yield advantages and profitability to the farmers and seed producers. Since both pigeonpea and rice are grouped under self-pollinated crops, this comparison, in the views of authors, may help in encouraging hybrid pigeonpea seed producers and those involved in marketing of hybrid seed.
  
Rice is a highly self-pollinated crop and earlier hybrids were not possible because it was essential that large quantities of hybrid seeds are produced easily and economically. In China, the birth place of hybrid rice, this impossible looking task was accomplished. To launch this program, the Chinese scientists decided to alter the pollination system of rice.

In a cropping systems there may be simultaneous or sequential application of herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, fertilizers, PGR during a single cropping season. The different chemicals will undergo physical and chemical changes as they interact with plant, soil and other chemical substances already applied to the plant or soil. The interaction effect of such chemical substances will be visible only at the later end of the cropping season. The responses observed in the plants can be.

The competitive relations among the cultivated crop species perform a relation and these are pronounced during the early growth period of the crops and during later phases. The crop’s performance is reflected into the yield output. Intercropping research so far conducted is based on the experimental layout of either replacement or additive series.

The chapter on completely randomized design (CRD) presents an overview of its theoretical principles, structure, and randomization methods. Completely Randomized Design

Completely Randomized Design is a type of experimental design commonly used in statistical analysis and research. It is applied under specific conditions:

• Homogeneous units: CRD is suitable when the experimental units are consistent and uniform across the study area.

• Adherence to experimental design principles: This design conforms to two principal aspects of experimental design i.e. Randomization and Replication.

• Flexibility in replication: It allows for both equal and unequal replication of treatments within the experimental setup.

• Suitable for controlled environments: CRD is particularly effective for experiments conducted in greenhouses or laboratories, where conditions can be tightly regulated

In an era where climate variability and extreme weather events are becoming increasingly common, the importance of accurate and reliable weather forecasts cannot be overstated. Farmers rely heavily on weather forecasts to make critical decisions that impact their agricultural practices, from planting and harvesting to irrigation and pest management. However, the process of using weather forecasts is not as straightforward as it may seem.
6.1. The Multifaceted Nature of Decision-Making
Farmers operate within a complex web of factors that influence their decisionmaking processes. Some of these factors include:
• Economic Considerations: Market fluctuations, input costs, and profit margins all play a role in shaping a farmer’s decisions. Weather forecasts must be considered in the context of these economic factors to ensure that decisions are financially viable.
• Social and Cultural Factors: Local traditions, community norms, and personal values can influence a farmer’s choices. For example, some farmers may prioritize environmental sustainability over profit maximization.
• Environmental Concerns: Soil health, water conservation, and biodiversity are all critical considerations for farmers. Weather forecasts must be integrated with these environmental concerns to ensure sustainable agricultural practices.
• Technological Advancements: The increasing use of precision agriculture, drones, and other technologies is changing the way farmers’ access and utilize weather information.
6.2. Challenges in Interpreting and Applying Weather Forecasts
The intricacies of interpreting and applying weather forecast data pose significant challenges for farmers. Some of these challenges include:
• Forecast Reliability: The accuracy and reliability of weather forecasts can vary significantly, making it difficult for farmers to trust and act upon the information.

INTRODUCTION
The engine is the core of a tractor, providing the essential power required for all its functions. Typically, a tractor engine is a four-stroke internal combustion engine that operates on diesel, although some models may use gasoline. The engine consists of several integral components that work together to generate power and ensure smooth operation. These parts include the cylinder block, which houses the cylinders where fuel combustion occurs; the pistons, which move within the cylinders to convert the energy from combustion into mechanical motion; and the crankshaft, which transfers the piston’s motion to the transmission. The valve system regulates the intake of air and fuel, as well as the exhaust of gases, ensuring efficient combustion. The fuel system, made up of the fuel tank, pump, and injectors, supplies fuel to the engine, while the cooling system, typically water-based, prevents the engine from overheating. Furthermore, the lubrication system ensures proper lubrication of all moving components to reduce friction and wear. The starter motor and battery are responsible for initiating the engine’s operation, and the exhaust system directs exhaust gases away from the engine. Together, these components enable the tractor to generate the power needed for a wide range of agricultural and industrial tasks.
A tractor engine is designed to deliver high torque at low speeds. It is an internal combustion engine that primarily operates on diesel, compressing and burning the fuel to generate mechanical motion. Farming systems or farming-based livelihood systems consist of various components that work together to produce food and generate income for farming households. Understanding crops and cropping systems is a
fundamental aspect of this broader framework. A farming system or farmingbased livelihood system is a complex and dynamic arrangement of various interrelated components that work together to support agricultural productivity, sustainability, and livelihood security. The components of such systems are selected and managed based on ecological conditions, socio-economic status, resource availability, and cultural practices. These components not only serve individual purposes but also integrate with one another to enhance overall system efficiency and sustainability.
The core component of any farming system is crop production, which includes cereals, pulses, oilseeds, vegetables, fruits, and other field crops. The choice of crops is influenced by soil type, rainfall, climate, and market access. Cropping systems such as mono-cropping, mixed cropping, intercropping, crop rotation, and sequential cropping are employed to optimize land use, reduce pest and disease risks, and improve soil fertility.
Livestock is another crucial component that supports the farming system through the provision of milk, meat, manure, and draft power. Cattle, buffaloes, goats, sheep, and poultry are commonly reared. Integration of livestock with crops ensures recycling of nutrients and diversification of income sources. Fisheries, particularly in water-abundant or coastal regions, form an important msupplementary activity. In inland areas, fish farming is integrated with rice cultivation (e.g., rice-fish farming) or practiced in farm ponds, contributing to dietary protein and income.

Integration of Enterprises

In agriculture, crop husbandry is the main activity. The income obtained from cropping is hardily sufficient to sustain the farm family throughout year. Activities such as dairying, poultry, fish- culture, sericulture, biogas production, edible mushroom cultivation, agro- forestry, agri- horticulture etc. assume critical importance in supplementing their farm income. Assumed regular cash flow is possible when cropping is combined with other enterprises. Judicious combination of enterprises keeping in view of the environment condition of a locality will pay grater dividends. At the same time it will promote effective recycling of residues/ wastes.

Integrated farming system seems to be the answer to the problems of increasing food production. For increasing income and for improving nutrition of the small scale farmers with limited resources without any adverse effect on environment and agro- eco-system. In a cropping system the amount of by products can be as high as or higher than marketable produce. This may go to waste if not utilized in an animal waste component and to reduce the cost of production of the economic produce of component two and finally to entrance the net income of the farm is whole.

Livestock is the best complementary enterprises with cropping, especially during the adverse years. Installation of a biogas plant in crop- livestock system will make use of the wastes, at the same time provides valuable manure and gas for cooking and lighting.

Soil is one of the major platforms on which life sustains. Soil, the product of weathering, covers the earth’s surface. Soil is the medium of plant growth and thus it requires proper attention for better crop yield. The land is the constituent of soil, vegetation, physico-chemical and biological attributes affecting its usages. The soil may act as a sink or source for the elements and other materials. Hence, it requires to understand the various components to facilitate management options for improving the fertility status of soil.

2.0 Soil

The soil is a natural dynamic body on which plant grows. It is a complex mixtures of minerals, water, air, organic matter and microorganisms. Besides, there exist an unconsolidated mineral or organic material on the surface of the earth and thus becomes a natural medium for the growth and nutrition of the plants.

Soils vary greatly in their organic matter content. For all practical purposes the organic matter content of the soil parallels the soil N content. The C/N ratio of soil organic matter generally falls in the range of 10 to 12. Because of the ease with which Kjeldahl determination can be made, N is often used as an index of soil organic matter content.

3.1. Composition of Organic Matter in Soil

Organic matter constitutes 1 to 6% of the topsoil weight of most upland soils. In a typical grassland soil, 5 to 6% of organic matter may be present in the top 15 cm. Top soils with less than 1% organic matter are mostly limited to desert regions. On the contrary, the organic matter content of soils in low, wet areas may be as high as 90% or even more. Soils with more than 12 - 18% organic carbon (approximately 20 - 30% organic matter) are called organic soils.

Proper soil management without impairing soil health is the prerequisite for achieving higher productivity from agriculture land. The arable soils of tropics and subtopics are poor in organic matter due to high temperature and intense microbial activity. The importance of organic matter in improving soil fertility through maintenance of optimum levels of soil organic matter as well as plants nutrients is well recognized. There is need to encourage more ecofriendly and productive farming system.

A growing number of farmers, ecologists and scientists are coming to conclusion that conventional farming can not be sustained because in the end it does more harm than good and it is high time to think of sounder ways of farming which are healthy for the soil, environment, plants, animals and human beings.

The practices of economically sound, viable and culturally appropriate agriculture is termed as sustainable agriculture. The excessive and imbalanced use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides on soil and plant in not only harmful to soil microflora and fauna but also reduces the productivity potential of the land. The conventional intensive agriculture has depleted the soil organic matter content and plant nutrients besides the susceptibility of crops to pest and disease. Nitrates the ultimate product of N- fertilizers pollute the ground of water and food, has higher levels of non-protein nitrogen (NPN). Increasing levels of NPN in human bodies have been reported. Soil is a dynamic living system and if it is not manured to feed soil biota, soil health gets deteriorated which is essential for cycling of plants nutrients.

Composting explains the biological decomposition of organic materials and its importance for soil fertility, nutrient recycling, and sustainable farm management. The chapter introduces stages and types of composting, including anaerobic, aerobic, and vermicomposting systems, and discusses physical, chemical, biological, economic, and social benefits. Major methods such as Indore, Coimbatore, Bangalore, NADEP, sugarcane trash composting, fermented mixed compost, and crop-residue composting are presented. Factors affecting decomposition, including carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, shredding, moisture, and temperature, are examined. The chapter concludes with vermicomposting, earthworm roles, materials, preparation, developmental phases, and essential conditions required for effective vermicompost production. with emphasis on practical farm-level management practice systems.

Introduction

In recent decades, severe weather and climatic occurrences have become more frequent, affecting human populations across the globe. These changes are caused, in part, by anthropogenic climate change. Vulnerable communities are particularly affected by these rapidly changing patterns, which can have catastrophic consequences. To mitigate the impact of climate change, communities must have access to accurate and up-to-date climate information. Weather predictions, from short-term forecasts to long-term scenarios based on data from previous decades and centuries, can provide valuable information to socioeconomic sectors that are vulnerable to climate change. Climate services offer scientifically-based data and forecasts that can assist decision-makers in managing the risks of climate variability and change. Globally accepted indices generated from daily temperature and precipitation data can indicate the more severe features of climate change. These indices are developed and analyzed by the CCI/WCRP/JCOMM Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices (ETCCDI) and have made a significant contribution to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Assessment Reports.

Agriculture has played an important role in the global economy in recent years. The further growth of the population is leading to a gradual decrease in the area of the agricultural land and further growing stresses on the farm system. Agricultural food production methods are rising in demand for successful and healthy. Innovative sensoring and motive technologies and advanced information and communications systems and Artificial Intelligence must supplement conventional agricultural management methods to speed up farm productivity growth more accurately, thereby promoting the production of high-quality and high-performance agriculture. Computer vision monitoring systems have become valuable tools in farm operations over the past decades, and their use has increased significantly.

What is Computer Vision?

Computer vision can be characterized as a field of AI for extracting information from digital images. The type of data obtained from an image may be different from recognition, navigational space measurements or applications of increased reality.

The applications of computer vision can also be described. Computer vision builds algorithms that recognize and use the quality of pictures for other purposes.

Introduction

A solar collector, the special energy exchanger, converts solar irradiation energy either to the thermal energy of the working fluid in solar thermal applications, or to the electric energy directly in Photovoltaic (PV) applications. For solar thermal applications, solar irradiation is absorbed by a solar collector as heat which is then transferred to its working fluid (air, water or oil). The heat carried by the working fluid can be used to either provide domestic hot water/heating, or to charge a thermal energy storage tank from which the heat can be drawn for use later (at night or cloudy days). Solar collectors are usually classified into two categories according to concentration ratios: non-concentrating collectors and concentrating collectors. A non-concentrating collector has the same intercepting area as its absorbing area, whilst a sun-tracking concentrating solar collector usually has concave reflecting surfaces to intercept and focus the solar irradiation to a much smaller receiving area, resulting in an increased heat flux so that the thermodynamic cycle can achieve higher Carnot efficiency when working under higher temperatures.

SUMMARY

Organic farming is not new to Indian farming community. Several forms of organic farming are being successfully practiced in diverse climate, particularly in rainfed, tribal, mountains and hill areas of the country. Among all farming systems, organic farming is gaining wide attention among farmers, entrepreneurs, policy makers and agricultural scientists for varied reasons such as it minimizes the dependence on chemical inputs (fertilizers; pesticides; herbicides and other agro-chemicals) thus safeguards/improves quality of resources, and it is labour intensive and provides an opportunity to increase rural employment and achieve long term improvements in the quality of resource base. The popularity of organic farming is gradually increasing and now organic agriculture is practiced in almost all countries of the world, and its share of agricultural land and farms is growing.

Concept of uncertainty

Uncertainty refers to a scenario in which a person is unsure of what will happen, i.e. when all possible outcomes of events are unknown, and neither the likelihood nor the outcomes are known. Uncertainty cannot be quantified; however, risk may be quantified using probability principles.

Farming is a financially hazardous profession. Farmers face an ever-changing panorama of possible pricing, yield, and other outcomes that affect their financial returns and overall well-being on a daily basis. Because the effects of decisions or events are frequently unknown until long after they occur, the outcomes may be better or worse than planned. When aggregate crop output or export demand fluctuates dramatically, for example, farm prices can swing dramatically, and farmers may see returns that are significantly below their expectations (Bairwa et al., 2013).

Introduction The primary mission of extension services is to facilitate desirable changes in human behaviour through educational means. These changes can encompass various aspects, including knowledge, skills, attitudes, understanding, goals,actions, and confidence. Effective communication is the cornerstone of an extension worker’s role. Their responsibility extends beyond merely informing farmers about improved practices; they are tasked with ensuring that the results of research and field trials are practically applied by farmers. Nevertheless, extension workers often encounter perplexing questions in their line of work.

Most of the scientific research studies –except few descriptive survey research studies–will have one or more hypotheses to be tested as a part of study. Hypothesis is a prediction intended to be tested in a research study (Aron, Coups, and Aron, 2012). Hypothesis is the guide which directs the purpose and process of research by indicating the dependent and independent variables to be observed, extraneous variables to be controlled and the active variables to be manipulated.

The crop production is affected by the plant type, climatic condition, soil type and management factors. The production of the plant might be increased by changing plant type and increasing the grain filling period under certain climatic condition where management and soil factors are not limited. There is a direct relationship between the plant type and crop yield because the orientation and number of leaves play an important role in carbon fixation (photosynthesis). Again any variety/cultivar will contribute 21-25 per cent to the total yield of any crop in general. In recent years due to development of photoinsensitive varieties and hybrids which are more fertilizer responsive and high yielding varieties lead to increase overall production in the country.

Plant ideotypes

Refers to plant type in which morphological and physiological characteristics are ideally suited to achieve high production potential and yield reliability. The concept of ideotype was given by Donald in 1968 and he illustrated that there should be minimum competition between the crops and crop must be competent to compete with weeds. Ideotype is defined as a biological model which is expected to perform or behave in a predictable manner within a defined environment. On the basis of environment, Donald and Hamblin (1976) identified two forms of ideotypes that is isolation ideotypes and competition ideotypes. Isolation ideotypes are suitable for mono/single cropping and competition ideotypes are suitable for mixed cultivation.

Reliability deals with the dependency, consistency, stability, predictability and accuracy of the research data. In our day to day life, when we say that a person is reliable then it means his behaviour is predictable, his behaviour (the way he behaved in past, he is behaving now and the way he will behave in future) will be consistent and he is dependable. On other hand an unreliable person’s behaviour is unpredictably variable and he cannot be depended upon.

Term ‘Scientific research’ is too broad to be explained by using one or two definitions. One should go through the different expert views about scientific research in order to internalize the concept of scientific research. In essence a scientific research is characterized by its rigor, testability, replicability, precision, confidence, objectivity, generalizability and parsimony.

Research: Uma Sekaran (2006) defined research as an organized, systematic, data-based, critical, objective, scientific inquiry or investigation into a specific problem, undertaken with the purpose of finding answers or solutions to it.

Soil pH

 Soil reaction is measured by pH (Puissance de Hydrogen) of a suspension of

soil in water. The word “pH” has originated from the French word “pouvoir

hydrogen” which means powers of hydrogen. The acidity, neutrality or

alkalinity of a soil is measured in terms of hydrogen ion activity (active

concentration) of the soil water system. Most of the agricultural soils have

a pH varying from 4.5 to 8.5. The active concentration of hydrogen ion is

termed as ‘active acidity’ which is 1/50,000 or 1/1,00,000 times lesser than the

exchange acidity or exchangeable hydrogen.

 Soil pH is a measure of the activity of ionised H (H+) in the soil solution. The

pH of a solution can be defined as the negative logarithm to base 10 of the H+

ion activity or the logarithm of the reciprocal of the H+ ion activity.

 Activity coefficient of an ionic species is the degrees of freedom of that species

In sustainable agriculture the word sustain is derived from the Latin word sustinere (sus-from below and tinere-to hold), to keep in existence or maintain, implies long term support or performance. As it pertain to agriculture, sustainable describes farming system that are capable of maintaining their productivity and their usefulness in society indefinitely. Such system should be resource conserving, socially supporting, commercially competitive and environmentally sound. Systems approach is essential for understanding sustainability and it gives us tools to explore the interconnections between farming and other aspects of our environment and sustainability implies at the following,

1. Meeting the basic needs of all people and giving this priority over meeting the greeds of a few
2. Keeping population densities if possible below the carrying capacity of the region
3. Adjusting consumption patterns and the design and management of systems to permit the renewal of renewable resources
4. Conserving, recycling and establishing priorities for the use of non- renewable resources
5. Keeping environmental impact below the level required to allow the systems unaffected to recover and continue to evolve.

Various definitions have been provided for what constitutes sustainable agriculture ranging from the narrow focus on economics or production to the incorporation of culture and ecology. Wendell Berry has simply said A sustainable agriculture does not deplete soils or people.

The concept of multiple dimensions of a sustainable agriculture is more broad which has to be viewed with awareness of potential technologies, fragile ecosystem and human interference to disrupt with limited resource availability. All these aspects have to be taken into account for proper understanding of sustainable agriculture.

The major aspects are,

1. Agriculture must be increasingly productive and efficient in resource use.
2. Biological processes within agriculture systems must be controlled from within (rather than by external inputs of pesticides) and
3. Nutrient cycles within the farm must be closed.

Within this frame work a sustainable model has to be developed. The proposed concept of sustainable agriculture which is best suited for developing and developed countries and is a viable model for the present and future is depicted schematically (Fig. 1).

Agricultural production has made rapid strides in the past four to five decades and has enabled India to achieve self-sufficiency in food grain production. This was only through ìGreen Revolutionî which ushered during 1967-68 onwards, when use of old agricultural practices were mostly done away with. Neglect of old or indigenous agricultural practices such as use of organic manures (farm yard manure - FYM, compost, green manure), cultural control methods like sanitation, tillage/removal of weeds, adjusting sowing/harvesting time crop rotation, trap crops, water and fertilizer management and host plant resistance, and use of plant based insecticides like neem or nim (Azadirachta indica), drek (Azadirachta indica), nirgudhi or bana (Vitex negundo) vis-a-vis biological control measures, has resulted in outbreak of ill-effects in human beings and animals through contaminated food stuffs (Gupta, 2006a).

Rather than viewing waste solely as an environmental challenge, valorization recognizes it as a valuable resource. When processed properly, waste can yield energy, materials, or bio-based products. Common techniques include composting, anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis, and recycling, which are used to extract value from agricultural, industrial, and municipal waste. The primary goals of valorization are to reduce environmental pollution, generate economic returns, promote sustainability, and lessen reliance on virgin raw materials. By driving innovation in biotechnology, materials science, and engineering, valorization supports the growth of eco-friendly industries and fosters long-term environmental responsibility. Ultimately, it transforms waste management into a proactive, profitable, and sustainable practice.

As such, valorization is a fundamental principle of the circular economy and sustainable development.

Watershed management

Watershed is defined as a geohydrological unit draining to a common point by a system of drains. All lands on earth are part of one watershed or other. Watershed is thus the land and water area, which contributes runoff to a common point.

A watershed is an area of land and water bounded by a drainage divide within which the surface runoff collects and flows out of the watershed through a single outlet into a lager river or lake.

1. Introduction

Cattle are one of the important livestock species of the country which forms an integral part of Indian agriculture since ages. Human progress depends on the utilisation of animals and natural resources in a balanced way. Cow, in particular, is considered as a part of the family in India. Cattle have been of the utmost importance for the sustenance of agriculture, nutrition supply and religious practices in India. Frequent references on cattle farming are found in Indian mythological books and historical writings regarding their utilization in agriculture as draught power, milk production and source of manure. Approximately 200 million Indians are involved in livestock farming, including around 100 million dairy farmers. Roughly 80% of bovines in the country are low on productivity and are reared by small and marginal farmers. Most of the local cows are managed on a low input and low output system for production of milk for the household nutritional requirement and sale surplus milk to dairy co-operatives or local milk sellers. Poor genetic makeup of Indian livestock is the main reason for their lower productivity as compared to the recorded potential of animals in temperate climate. With the change in food consumption pattern due to urbanization, increase in health awareness, reduced requirement of draught animal power due to mechanisation, etc., the demand for milk and milk products have increased many folds.

“Curriculum” is seen often as a critical issue during discussions on quality of agricultural education, being considered variously as content, as product and as process. It is easy to make the assumption that a common understanding of curriculum, but in practice this is far from the case, with a host of definitions, approaches and ideological standpoints. Even though a dialogue on curriculum theory is well established, there is still a strong tendency in practice to understand curriculum as a list of content, often developed in considerable detail, that students should be taught.

Whenever we design a scientific study it is designed in a specific contextual background to solve one or another scientific problem. Subsequently it also involves a set of variables/phenomenon operating in a particular context, set of relationships among these variables and the conditions under which they operate. Certainly, to address an unsolved scientific problem we need to carry out research by employing well defined research methodology and have an idea about possible outcomes.  For example when a extension scientist is asked to study the impact of a novel programme, he needs to understand the background and the context under which the programme was introduced, what are the developmental inputs given under the programme, to whom, when (variables), with what purpose (context), what kind of impact he/she is supposed to investigate (presumed relationship), what methods he is going to use to investigate the impact of developmental programme (research methodology) and what are the possible outcomes of the investigation and how programme interventions are related to the outcome (relationship).

18.1 Introduction

Nano – Science & Technology is design, fabrication and application of nanostructures or nanomaterials, and the fundamental understanding of the relationships between physical properties or phenomena and material dimensions at nano meter scales.

2.1 Introduction

The word Nanotechnology has originated from a Greek word which means “dwarf” and nanometer is one billionth of a meter (1 nm = 10^-9 meter). The nano-scale is not just another step toward miniaturization but a qualitatively new scale. The new behiviour of matter at nano-scale is dominated by quantum mechanics, material confinement, large interfacial volume fraction and other unique properties, phenomenon and processes. At nano-scale, physics, chemistry and biology converge towards the same principles and tools. Nanotechnology cannot be considered as a discipline in science or technology but it is domain in science and technology. Nanotechnology is a multidisciplinary area, any scientist, engineer, medical doctor can do research on nanotechnology. Presently, it is more of a science and less of a technology because of a lack of proper tools for studying the properties of nano-material. There is an immediate need to convert this science into technology and get out of this transition stage.
