As the world grapples with the complexities of climate change, one group of people has been on the front lines, witnessing firsthand the devastating impacts of rising temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and increased extreme weather events: farmers. For generations, farmers have been the stewards of the land, relying on their intimate knowledge of the natural world to coax crops from the earth and raise livestock. However, the changing climate is redefining the rules of their trade, forcing them to adapt to new and unpredictable conditions. The relationship between farmers and the climate is deeply intertwined. On one hand, farmers have always been attuned to the subtleties of the climate, carefully observing weather patterns, soil moisture levels, and pest populations to make informed decisions about planting, harvesting, and crop management. This traditional knowledge, passed down through generations, has allowed farmers to develop a keen sense of the local climate and its rhythms. On the other hand, farmers are also significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, with agricultural practices such as tillage, fertilization, and livestock production releasing carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide into the atmosphere. As the climate continues to change, farmers are finding themselves at the forefront of climate awareness. Rising temperatures are altering growing seasons, shifting the distribution of pests and diseases, and changing the patterns of rainfall and drought. This, in turn, affects crop yields, quality, and profitability, making it increasingly challenging for farmers to maintain their livelihoods. The consequences of climate change are far-reaching, from the immediate impacts on farm productivity to the long-term implications for food security, rural development, and ecosystem health. In this context, farmers are not just passive victims of climate change; they are also key players in the global effort to mitigate its effects. By adopting climateresilient agricultural practices, such as agroforestry, conservation tillage, and integrated pest management, farmers can reduce their carbon footprint, improve soil health, and promote biodiversity. Moreover, farmers can serve as powerful advocates for climate policy, using their unique perspective to inform decisionmaking at the local, national, and international levels. This chapter explores the complex relationships between farmers, climate awareness, and climate change. By examining the ways in which farmers are experiencing and responding to climate change, we can gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Social research concentrates more on socio economic variables to find out effects of the events that take place in social system. The magnitude of variation in the variables assumes to bring variation on the effect. The variables relating to farmers of small farms are many and they are specific to farming system of the coastal ecosystem. Such variables were grouped under personal, social, economic, communication behaviour, marketing behaviour, farming behaviour and training. The sub variables under each heading were given in the following table.

Farmers are the backbone of global food systems, playing a crucial role in feeding populations and maintaining biodiversity. However, they often face numerous challenges, including land tenure insecurity, lack of access to quality seeds, limited financial resources, and unfavorable market conditions. Recognizing and advocating for farmers' rights is vital to address these issues and support sustainable agricultural practices. This article explores the historical development of farmers' rights, their key components, the challenges farmers face, and effective strategies for advocacy, emphasizing the importance of collective action to empower the agricultural sector.

The world’s population is projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, putting unprecedented pressure on the agricultural sector to produce more food while minimizing its environmental footprint. However, the increasing frequency and severity of climate-related disasters, such as droughts, floods, and heat waves, pose significant challenges to agricultural productivity and food security. To address these challenges, farmers, policymakers, and agricultural experts must adopt innovative approaches that integrate climate science, agricultural meteorology, and cutting-edge technologies to generate actionable farming intelligence. Climate science and agricultural meteorology provide critical insights into the complex relationships between weather patterns, climate variability, and agricultural productivity. By incorporating these disciplines into farming practices, farmers can enhance crop yields, reduce climate-related risks, promote sustainable agriculture, and improve decision-making. Understanding weather patterns and climate trends enables farmers to optimize planting dates, irrigation schedules, and harvest times, leading to improved crop yields and reduced losses. Access to accurate and reliable climate information helps farmers anticipate and prepare for climaterelated disasters, minimizing damage to crops and livestock. Climate science and agricultural meteorology also inform farmers about the most effective strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, conserving water, and maintaining soil health. The integration of climate science, agricultural meteorology, and cutting-edge technologies is revolutionizing the agricultural sector. Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms analyze large datasets, including climate information, soil moisture levels, and crop health, to provide insights on optimal farming practices. Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and connected devices monitor weather patterns, soil conditions, and crop health in real-time, enabling farmers to respond promptly to changing conditions. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping and spatial analysis help farmers understand the spatial distribution of climate-related risks and opportunities, informing decision-making at the farm level (Fig. 3.1).

The prosperity of any country depends upon the prosperity of its people. Food, clothing, shelter, health, education, security, roads, electricity and drinking water are the today’s basic needs. Farmers produce food. About 70 % of Indian population is engaged in farming. Therefore, prosperity of India would depend upon the prosperity of its farmers. This in turn depends upon the adoption of improved technology and judicious allocation of resources (land, labour, capital, machinery etc). Human race depends more on farm products for their existence than anything else since food and clothing – the prime necessaries are products of farming. Even for industrial prosperity, farming forms the basic raw material. To sustain and satisfy as many as his needs, the farmers include crop production, livestock, poultry, fisheries, beekeeping etc. in their farms. Earlier subsistence was the important objective of farming. Farmers took many activities such as planting of fruit trees in their farms or on the common lands just for the welfare of mankind without expecting anything in return. The kind of farming where subsistence and welfare of mankind were the main objectives is designated as mixed farming. Farming today is also a mix of enterprises. However, higher profitability without altering ecological balance is important in farming. A set of agricultural activities organized while preserving land productivity, environmental quality and maintaining desirable level of biological diversity and ecological stability is designated as “Farming System”. Here the emphasis is mainly on a system rather than on gross output.

In other words “farming system” is a resource management strategy to achieve economic and sustain agricultural production to meet diverse requirement of the farm household while preserving the resource base and maintaining high environmental quality. The farming system in its real sense will help to lift the economy of agriculture and standard of living of the farmers.

Introduction

Nature is dynamic; it causes inheritable changes in all living organisms. For thousands of years, farmer around the world have been selecting and conserving varieties of different crop plants that they cultivated. This process has generated a rich wealth of varieties in each crop plant, seen to be most abundant in countries near the equator and India is no exception. In the world there are Mega centers of biodiversity of which aware present in India, this is because in India, the different soils and agro-climatic situations are present, so Indian farmers grow a large number of crops. Generation of Indian farmers, with their continued selection and conservation, has created a rich wealth of varieties in many crops. Therefore India is the original home of many crops such as rice, little and kodo millets, red gram, moth bean, jute, pepper, cardamom, many vegetables and fruit species. These plants were identified from the wild, selected and cultivated by Indian farmers over hundreds of years. The present wealth of varieties in India includes both crops that originated in the country and those that were introduced from the other countries during the distant and recent paste are soybean, sunflower, oil palm and kiwi fruit.

The Indian economy is predominantly rural and agriculture oriented. In agriculture, 85% of the holdings are less than two hectares and the declining trend in the average size of the farmer holdings, poses a serious problem. Majority of them are dry lands, which depend on erratic monsoon rains. The rest of the area is cultivated with supplemental irrigation. The farmers concentrate mainly on crop production, which is invariably subjected to a high degree of uncertainly income and employment.

In India the cultivable land is 143.8 million hectares and there is very little possibility of extending it further. Therefore, to meet the requirement of food grains for increasing population, the only option open is through time and effective space utilization in agriculture. The time concept relates to increasing the intensity of cropping under assured irrigated conditions, whereas space utilization pertains to building up of vertical dimension through multi-tier cropping and farming system approach. Thus by making use of these time and space concept either in irrigated or in rained areas, the productivity per unit area per unit time can be substantially enhanced. Therefore the only way to increase an agricultural production in the small/marginal units of farming is to increase the productivity per unit time and area. This may be achieved of quicker maturing varieties with equal yields or by improving techniques of culture, fertilizer use, weed and pest control.

A ‘system’ is a set of interrelated, interacting and interdependent elements operating together for a common purpose and capable of reacting as a whole to external forces. It is unaffected directly by its own output and it has a specified external boundary based on the inclusion of all significant feedbacks. A ‘farm’ is a system because several activities are closely related to each other by the common use of the farm labour, land and capital, by risk distribution and by the joint use of the farmer’s management capacity.

Farming System Approach (FSA)

Farming systems refers deliberate raising of crops,forest and fruit trees, animals including fisheries, piggery and duck farming, sericulture, mushroom, on a given unit of land to increase the productivity and profitability, to upgrade natural resource base and to achieve overall improvement in the environment

The philosophy behind shifting from cropping system to the farming system mode involves

Introduction

Global warming directly ref lects on rising sea levels due to melting of ice caps and natural expansion of sea water as it becomes warmer. Consequently, areas adjoining the coast and wetlands could be frequently flooded and the distribution pattern of monsoon rains may alter, through more intense downpours, storms and hurricanes. The meteorological data available at the Annamalai University, for the tail end of the Cauvery river delta region of Tamil Nadu State, India, shows that the average annual rainfall during the last 10 years segment has increased by 233 mm compared to the average of the previous 10 years segment (1588 mm and 1355 mm, respectively). In contrast, annual evaporation has reduced by 453 mm (2153 mm and 1700mm, respectively) (Kathiresan, 2011). The year 1990 was the hottest year in the last century with all other five of the warmest years in the century falling within the last 22 years. This trend indicates that f lash floods in wetlands and droughts in uplands have become more frequent. Such a changing climate warrants reinforcement of climate resilience in farming to protect the livelihoods of farmers and the biodiversity. The sub-project of the National Agricultural Innovation Project implemented by Annamalai University in Tamilnadu, sponsored by ICAR has identified three types of clusters in each of the four disadvantaged districts, based on the prevailing agro-ecology viz. wetland clusters, rainfed upland clusters and coastal shore farming clusters. The constraints for farming and livelihoods in these clusters are identified as frequent floods, inundation, drought, weed problems, crop failure, and lack of diversification (Kathiresan, 2009a and Kathiresan, 2010). Farming systems that would be resilient to such climatic and farming constraints designed through rigorous institutional and on-farm experiments (Kathiresan, 2007; Kathiresan, 2009b and Kathiresan, 2012) were disseminated for adoption by the farmers in these clusters.

Farm economic efficiency of a specific area is an important factor of productivity and growth, where resources are scare and opportunities for developing and adopting better technologies have lately declining. No doubt, conventional farming is risky and farmers are reluctant to invert heavily in crop production. Modest increments in productivity are no longer sufficient to justify the investment of scarce resources as farming sector is small scale and resource poor, but integrated farming system assumes greater importance for sound management of farm resources to enhance the farm productivity, reduce the environmental degradation, improve the quality of life of resource poor farmers and to maintained sustainability. Farming system refers to the farm wherein two or more enterprises are integrated with the farm resources for achieving the fuller utilization, realize maximum profit and stabilize returns.

Various components of farming systems are as under

1. Cropping system

A system is set of elements which depend on each other and interacting among themselves. Farming system consists of several enterprises like cropping system, dairying, piggery, poultry, fishery, bee keeping, etc. These enterprises are interrelated. The end products and wastes of one enterprise are used as inputs in other. The wastes of cow, dung used as FYM in crop production and straw is used as feeding material for cow. Bullock is used for field preparation.

Cropping system is an important component of a farming system. It represents cropping pattern used on a farm and their interaction with farm resources, other farm enterprises and available technology which determine their makeup.

Cropping pattern: means the proportion of area under various crops at a point of time in a unit area. It indicates the yearly sequence and spatial arrangement of crops and fallow in an area. It indicates the early sequence and spatial arrangement of crops and fallow in an area. Crop sequence and crop rotation are generally used synonymously. Crop rotation refers to recurrent succession of crops on the same piece of land either in a year or over a longer period of time. Component crops are so chosen so that soil health in not impaired.

In agriculture, crop production is the main activity. However, the income obtained from crops may hardly be sufficient to sustain the farm family throughout the year. Assured regular cash flow is possible when the crop is combined with other enterprises. These other enterprises or components are called allied components.

Background

Farming system is a complex inter-related matrix of soils, plants, animals, implements, labour and capital, inter-dependent farming enterprises. The farm is viewed in a holistic manner (multi-disciplinary approach). Farming system approach requires commonly homogenous type of farmers. It is an inter-disciplinary, participatory and bottom-up planning approach. It is an approach for developing farm household systems. It is built on the principles of productivity, profitability, stability and sustainability which complement component oriented approach to development.

In India since ages, the dryland farmers adopted a kind of mixed farming involving traditional annual crops and livestock consisting of one or two cows / bullocks and few poultry birds. This traditional system though of small scale provided some kind of risk minimisation particularly in the years of scanty rainfall causing agricultural drought. (https://coabnau.in/uploads/1587050523_ Agriculturalheritage.pdf) Discouraged by their marginal impact on farm economy, dryland farmers switched over to the lure of ‘productive’ mono-cropping with certain commercial crops like cotton etc. The continuous mono-cropping resulted in impoverishment of soils and low crop yields which took farmers into the labyrinth of poverty.

The arid regions of India, spread over 3,17,090 sq. km account for 12% area of the country. The western Rajasthan carries the onus of nearly 62% of arid area. Dryland farming is the main occupation of the people in Indian arid zone. More than 70% of the population in the region is engaged in dryland farming on more than 90% of cultivable lands. The average farm family in Indian arid zone consists of 6-8 members possessing 4-6 hectares of land. The over-exploited fragile natural resources are predominantly under mixed farming - pastoral as well as arable. Farming is almost entirely rainfed in this zone with low and unstable yields.

9.1 Introduction

Nanoparticles (NPs) are particulate matter with at least one dimension less than 100 nm (Christian et al., 2008). Although NPs are naturally present in the environment, manufactured NPs may have distinctive surface properties and chemistry in comparison with natural NPs (Handy et al., 2008). Manufactured NPs have a large area-to-volume ratio and size-dependent properties, which impart novel properties and behaviors that make them suitable for nanotechnology applications (Auffan et al., 2009). Range of applications for NPs has brought about a rapid development of the nanotechnology industry.

When a herbicide is applied to the soil, it is subjected to various interactions with soil and surrounding environment which ultimately determines its persistence. Dissipation of these compounds from soil system is by three main processes viz., physical (volatilization, leaching and runoff), chemical (photochemical decomposition, adsorption by organic and inorganic colloids and chemical decomposition) and biological (microbial decomposition and plant uptake) 

1. Physical Processes

a) Volatilisation

India’s vast geographical expanse and diverse climatic conditions have led to the development of distinct agro-climatic zones. These zones, as defined by the Planning Commission and ICAR, provide a scientific basis for selecting location-specific farming systems that ensure sustainable productivity, livelihood security, and efficient resource use. The feasibility of farming systems in these zones depends on factors such as rainfall, temperature, soil type, water availability, cropping intensity, and socio-economic conditions. The feasibility of different farming systems significantly depends on the specific agro-climatic zone, which encompasses factors such as temperature, rainfall, soil type, and elevation. India’s vast and varied geography is divided into 15 agro-climatic zones by the Planning Commission. Each zone has specific soil types, climatic conditions, topography, and resource availability. These factors influence the most feasible and sustainable farming systems. Below is a detailed description of suitable farming systems for each zone.
1. Western Himalayan Region (Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand)
• Climate: Cold temperate to alpine.
• Feasible Farming Systems:
º Horticulture-based (apple, pear, walnut)
º Agri-horti-pastoral (wheat/barley + fruits + sheep/goat)
º Apiculture and sericulture
• Justification: Hilly terrain and climate favor fruits and small livestock.

7.1 Introduction

The current atmospheric CO₂ concentration is the highest during last 650,000 to 800,000 years (Luthi et al., 2008), and also probably in the last 20 million years (Pearson and Palmer, 2000). Since last two decades, it is increasing at a rate of about 2 ppm/yr with the current concentration of 389 ppm in 2010 (WMO, 2011). The current trend of energy use based on fossil fuel consumption may raise it to 900 - 1100 ppmby the end of 21^st century (Kiehl, 2011).

Large parts of the country perennially reel under recurring drought. Over 68% of India is vulnerable to drought. The ‘chronically drought-prone areas’ – around 33%, receive less than 750 mm of rainfall, while 35%, classified as ‘drought-prone’ receive rainfall of 750-1,125 mm. The drought-prone areas of the country are confined to peninsular and western India – primarily arid, semi-arid and sub-humid regions. Approximately 218.1 thousand square kilometers of land in India under sub-tropical semi-arid and arid conditions are spread over the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh (Anonymous, 1974). Agriculture is predominantly rainfed and the region is drought-prone. Less than 23% of land is irrigated. Forest cover is <5% and waste and fallow areas occupy 42% of the land.

Millets are highly nutritious and play a significant role in many people’s diets around the world. They have traditionally been transformed into a range of products through fermentation and malting for centuries. In the era of sustainable development, we still lag in using millets as a primary source of nutrition even after knowing that they are rich in terms of nutrition and other essential elements as compared to cereals. Today we have lots of information regarding different millets; nutrition content, methods of preservation, fermentation, malting, its products etc. Foods made from millet are regarded as potential prebiotics because they can improve the availability or functionality of probiotics, which has major positive effects on health. Foods have been fermented in order to enhance their flavor, texture and palatability. Although fermentation can result in a variety of products, the most prevalent ones are ethanol, lactic acid, carbon dioxide and hydrogen gas (H2 ). Commercial applications for these materials include use in food, vitamins, medications and industrial chemicals. Additionally, fermentation increases the amount of protein present, improves the accessibility of carbohydrates and reduces antinutritional components like tannin and phytic acid. Even though it has some drawbacks, such as the potential for contamination with dangerous microbes, fermentation technology is proven to enhance the nutritional quality of food products. This chapter covers the millet fermentation technology’s effects on the nutritional composition of the millets, contemporary developments in fermented millet-based products and technological improvements examined in the millet fermentation technology.

In modern farming with fertigation machines (NutriCare) and automated drip irrigation systems, fertigation set up schemes like the above are put into practice. This scheme will stream line the installation, operation and monitoring of the entire process. An informed grower would be able to control crop performance more precisely and achieve his objectives.

The crop growing environment, both soil/media and aerial are controlled in green house. Therefore, the movement of water (liquid and vapour) and minerals (nutrient ions) follow a different pattern altogether. This factor should be considered while preparing the fertigation program. This becomes all the more different if soil-less rooting media is used.

SUMMARY

Fertigation is the injection of concentrated soluble nutrients into irrigation water to enhance crop production. It is used extensively in commercial agriculture and horticulture. In combination with micro-irrigation (drip irrigation), this technique forms an efficient method for precisely applying nutrients close to the crop root zone, especially when a polyethylene mulch is used. Fertigation is used to spoon feed additional nutrients or correct nutrient deficiencies detected in plant tissue analysis and usually practiced with high value crops such as vegetables, turf, fruit trees, and ornamentals. Water supply for fertigation kept separate from domestic water supply to avoid contamination. Fertilizing fruit and vegetable crops requires a delicate balance between yield, quality, and environmental impact. Fertigation increases response to nitrogen (N) and provides greater opportunity to control rates to optimum levels to the root zone. Providing nutrients through the irrigation system enables more flexibility in a fertilizer program. Several types of irrigation systems are available for use in crop production. For any system used, approved backflow control valves and interlock devices are necessary to prevent accidental contamination of the water source due to irrigation system failure or shutdown.

The Fertilizer (Control) Order

The Fertilizer (Control) Order (FCO) is a set of legally enforceable executive orders issued by the Govt. of India under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 passed by the Parliament. This order came into force in 1957, essentially to regulate the sale, price and quality of fertilizers in India. Amendments are made from time to time as per the exigencies and need of the hour and therefore a large number of amendments were made over a period of time. Consequently, after an overall review of the various provisions of the order, a revised Fertilizer (Control) Order 1985, was issued, which came into effect on September 25, 1985. The FCO consists of five Schedules comprising of different activities as mentioned in Figure 8.1, besides forms of registrations and appendices.

Schedule I comprises Part A and B. While Part A contains the specifications of different fertilizers (e.g. minimum nutrient content, maximum moisture content, range of physical parameters, maximum levels of impurities/ contaminants, etc.), that can be marketed in India (no material not performs the specifications as in the FCO cannot be sold as fertilizer), Part B lists the tolerance limits in plant nutrients and physical parameters for various fertilizers. Schedule II encompasses again two parts, with Part A describing the procedures for drawal of samples of fertilizers, and Part B describing detailed methods of analysis of fertilizers.

Schedule III encompasses four parts namely, Part-A, Part-B, Part-C and Part-D. While Part-A contains specifications of different biofertilizers, Part-B contains tolerance limits of biofertilizers, Part-C describes the procedures for drawal of sample of biofertilizers, Part-D describes the methods of analysis of biofertilizers. Schedule IV also encompasses four parts. Part-A contains specifications of organic fertilizers, Part-B contains tolerance limits of organic fertilizers, Part-C describes the procedures for drawal of sample of organic fertilizers, and Part-D describes the methods of analysis of organic fertilizers. Schedule V also contains of four parts. Part-A contains specifications of non-edible de-oiled cake fertilizers, Part-B contains tolerance limits of non-edible de-oiled cake fertilizers, Part-C describes the procedures for drawal of sample of non-edible de-oiled cake fertilizers, and Part-D describes the methods of analysis of non-edible de-oiled cake fertilizers.

Introduction

Fertilization is the application of fertilizer for the benefit of the crops. It may be traditional broadcasting or fertigation. In broadcasting method the fertilizer is applied in concentrated granular form. The size of the granules ranges from granular dust to pellet size. These solid fertilizers get dissolved by the rain or irrigated water to leach down the plat root zone. This method results uneven nutrient delivery due to uneven dissolving the fertilizer granules. It may cause burning of plant leaves and root system due to uneven and uncontrolled release of nutrients. Dry fertilizers can volatilize and release gases which may damage or burn the nearby foliage. Availability of fertilizer to the plant root zone largely depends on the temperature and availability of water to dissolve the fertilizers.

In fertigation liquid or water-soluble fertilizer, soil amendments or other products required by the plants is either sprayed on to the plant material or applied to the plant bottom with irrigation water. Foliar application provides high rate of absorption of fertilizer through the leaf/stalk/branch structures of plants. Ground application also provides good consistency in making its way to root zone and plant absorption. Thus, the fertigation provides benefit of increased nutrient absorption; decrease water needs, and reduce the fertilizer and chemical use (Anonyms, 2005).

Fertilizer (Control) Order, 1985 which is administered by Deptt.of Agriculture Cooperation, Govt. of India has been issued under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955. The FCO lays, down as to what substances qualify for use as fertilizers in the soil, product-wise specifications, methods for sampling and analysis of fertilizers, procedure for obtaining license/registration as manufacture/dealer in fertilizers and conditions to be fulfilled for trading thereof, etc.

Fertilizers are required where soils are deficient in plant food elements. When land is planted to crops over a long period of time, the plant food elements slowly get reduced and productivity of crop goes down. Sandy soil looses plant food elements rapidly because heavy rainfall or application of irrigation water leaches these elements out from the soil. Adding chemical fertilizer increases fertility of soil. Principally nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium are added to the soil to promote greater yields. Uniform distribution and proper placement of fertilizer in the soil have become increasingly important factor in providing maximum crop response at minimum cost. Placing the fertilizer near the seeds at the time of sowing results in more effective utilization of nutrients. In the row crops side dressing of fertilizer is done which has immediate benefit when placed in the moist soil within the root zone.

Knowledge of fertilizer dose, selection of fertilizer sources, time and method of application is essential for achieving efficient use of fertilizers and profitable yield.

A. Fertilizer Dose

Fertilizer dose for crops is determined based on the field experimentation. It varies with the crops and varieties, initial fertility of the soil, soil properties, cropping system, climate, season, rainfed or irrigated crop, expected yield etc. Fertilizer dose for rainfedcrops (Kg/ha)

Fertilizer N has been the key input in increasing cereal production throughout the world. In India, it made possible to achieve the yield potential of high-yielding dwarf varieties of wheat that led to ‘Green Revolution in 1968’. Nitrogen fertilization also increases protein content in wheat grains (Rajeswara Rao and Prasad, 1987) and leads to increased production of proteins in cereals (Prasad and Shivay, 2015). Cereal production in India increased from 42.4 million tonnes (Mt) in 1950–51 to 259.6 Mt in 2017–18, while fertilizer N application increased from 0.05 Mt to 16.96 Mt. However, the average agronomic ef?ciency of N (AEn) in India for cereals is only 9.5 kg grain kg–1 N (Sharma and Batra, 2011) as compared to global average of 24 kg grain kg–1 N for maize, 22 kg grain kg–1 N for rice and 18 kg grain kg–1 N for wheat (Ladha et al., 2005). Besides this, more disturbing is the fact that in irrigated areas the AEn declined from 13.4 to 3.4 kg grain kg–1 N during 1970–2005 (Biswas and Sharma, 2006). This is due to poor N management. Bulk of fertilizer N is applied broadcast on surface in most crops.

Fertilizers are applied to supplement nutrient requirement of the crop. It should not be looked as a substitute to organic sources. After determination of nutrient requirement of a crop fora given yield and contribution of nutrients from different sources, articularly, from the soil source, it is necessary to supplement the balance from the inorganic sources. These are determined by field experimentation supplemented by pot-culture, laboratory and green housestudies, if necessary. When a fertilizer is applied all of its nutrient (s) are not absorbed by the crop. The interactions between soil-crop-season and other factors are quite significant. Only a fraction of the nutrient(s) is utilized by the crop.

Plant requires food or nutrients or elements for its growth and development which are absorbed through soil. Adequate supply of plant nutrients is important to ensure efficient crop production. Plant nutrients are essentially applied through manures and fertilizers. Application of manures and fertilizers to the soil is one of the important factors which help in increasing the crop yield and to maintain the soil fertility. 
Manures
Manures are plant and animal wastes that are used as source of plant nutrients. They release nutrient after their decomposition. These are relatively bulky materials, such as animal or green manures, which are added mainly to improve the physical condition of the soil, to replenish and keep up its humus status, to maintain the optimum conditions for the activities of soil micro-organisms and make good a small part of the plant nutrients removed by crops or otherwise lost through leaching and soil erosion.

Fertilizer

Fertilizers are defined as materials having definite chemical composition with a high analytical value that supply essential plant nutrients in available form. They are usually manufactured by industries and sold with a trade name. They are commonly synthetic in nature and also called as chemical fertilizers/inorganic fertilizers/commercial fertilizers other than lime and gypsum. Most of the chemical fertilizers are inorganic in nature.

Any material of natural or synthetic origin added to the soil to supply one or more plant nutrients.

10.1. Classification of fertilizers

10.1.1. Straight fertilizers

Supply only one primary plant nutrient, namely nitrogen or phosphorus or potassium.

Eg. Urea, ammonium sulphate, potassium chloride and potassium sulphate.

Organic Fertilizers and Manures

Farmers have been using organic waste as fertilizers for a very long time. As previously mentioned, the application of O.M. to a soil can have number of beneficial effects on soil structure, C.E.C. and microbial activity. However, organic manures mainly originate from the waste products of animal and plant production and although rich in carbon compounds, they are usually relatively poor in available plant nutrients.

The nutrient content of organic manures varies widely depending on their source and moisture content. Farm yard manure (F.Y.M.) is one of the most common organic fertilizers used. Others are concentrated animal manures, and crop residues such as straw.

Cotton

Cotton is one of the most important fiber and cash crop of India and play a key role in economic and social affairs of the world. Cotton is referred to as “King of Fibres” and also known as “White Gold”. India is largest produces of accounting for 22% cotton in the world. Nearly 65 per cent of the cotton crop is grown under rainfed conditions. Cotton production, processing and trade provides livelihood to several millions of people.

Scientific Name : Gossypium hirsutum

Family : Malvaceae

Origin: Cotton has been used as a fabric in India from time immemorial. It has been cultivated in the Indus Valley for more than 5000 years before. The excavations of Mohen-jo-daro indicates a high degree of art in spinning and weaving with cotton at that time. It finds mention in the Rigveda, the oldest scripture of the Hindus. Manu also refers to it in his Dharma Shasta. India appears to have been the centre of an important cotton industry as early as 1500 B.C.

Introduction

For optimum use of harvested rain water in surface reservoir like farm ponds or tankas, small sized solar PV pumping systems with 1 hp AC and DC motor were experimentally tested at research farms of ICAR-Central Arid Zone Research Institute, Jodhpur (Fig. 16.1). Total suction head in both pumps was about 5 m. Among two installed pumps, the system with AC pump consisted of 1400 Wp (200 Wp × 7) whereas the DC pump consisted of PV array of 920 Wp (230Wp × 4). Each PV panel of AC solar pump was connected in series, which was further connected with an inverter to generate AC output of about 220-240 volt and 4-4.2 ampere. In case of DC solar pump, panels are connected in parallel to generate DC output of 40-50 volt and 15-20 ampere.

Many farmer participatory field  experiments were designed and conducted in different states of India having large area under acid soils, with locally available soil ameliorants to study their effect on soil health and crop performance. This work was done during 2000 & 2005 under an ICAR network project on “Soil characterization and resource management of acid soil regions for increasing productivity”. The details of the field locations are presented in table 1.

13.1 Biosafety Research Trials: Scope and Implementation

Fieldpea is animportantrabi pulse crop which is highly productive and is grown for food, feed as a vegetable. There are two types of peas grown in India viz., vegetable type in which grains arevery sweet when green and become wrinkled ondrying, and grain type where grains are generally white and round. Green seeds of the grain type are not so sweet as in thecase ofvegetable type. The dry grains areconsumed in various forms such as chat, chhola, dal, vegetable and flour. Green seeds are used as fresh, frozen or canned vegetables. The cultivation of grain type is confined to northern and central parts of the country.

It is high protein (20%) crop with all the essential aminoacids important for normal activity of living organisms. The fractional composition is also favourable the most easily assimilated water soluble protein from mature pea seeds varies from 36 to 87% and in green matter from 65 to 82%. Pea contains 4 mgpro-vitamin A, 300 mgvitamin C, 3 mgB₁, 1.5 mgB₂and 1.2 mgpantothenic acid per 1000 g fresh seed weight. Also, it contains 1.1% fat, 2.2% minerals, 4.5% fibre and 56.5% carbohydrate. It is rich in phosphorus. Green pea and the immature pods of pea are typified by a high level of active lipotropic antisclerotic substances-choline and inositol.Choline deficiency may lead to the development and growth of malignant tumors.

Investment Appraisal Techniques

The data of the study were collected from the two hundred and sixty-six 266 regular qualified LIS professionals. 

1. Introduction Millets have gained popularity as staple foods worldwide, particularly in regions with hot and humid climates. These crops are often cultivated in marginal areas where major grains struggle to yield significant harvests (Thapliyal and Singh, 2015). One such millet is finger millet (Eleusine coracana), native to Ethiopia, and widely grown in Africa and India, where it is known by various names, including ragi and mandua (Table 1). In many developing countries, finger millet serves as a staple for a substantial portion of the population, especially those belonging to lower economic strata, providing essential nutrients (Chandra et al., 2016).
