Introduction

The procedure of making or building casting in the sand mould cavity or any other material is known as a foundry. This is the cheapest method of shaping the metal. Foundry exercise offers the technique of creating casting in moulds shaped in both sand or different material. A foundry is a manufacturing plant where castings are created by softening metal, emptying fluid metal into a shape, then, at that point, permitting it to harden. Moulding

This chapter examines the evolution of neural architectures that ultimately led to the dominance of the Transformer in contemporary language and multimodal AI. It begins with early neural networks, convolutional neural networks and recurrent neural networks before introducing attention mechanisms and the Transformer architecture. Particular attention is given to the major components of Transformers, including self-attention, multi-head attention, positional encoding and feedforward layers. Encoder, decoder and encoder–decoder configurations are examined through influential models such as BERT and GPT. The chapter further considers Vision Transformers and CLIP, demonstrating the extension of Transformer principles beyond natural language processing. At the same time, limitations such as computational complexity, memory requirements and long-context processing are discussed. Alternative approaches, including state-space models such as Mamba, efficient attention mechanisms, hierarchical architectures and Mixture-of-Experts models, are also explored as promising directions for scalable, efficient and adaptive AI.

It represents the collective action of communities working together to address their challenges, harness their strengths, and create positive change from within. At its essence, community mobilization embodies the principle that lasting development must emerge from communities themselves rather than being imposed by external forces. This chapter explores the fundamental concepts, historical evolution, and practical aspects of community mobilization, providing a comprehensive foundation for understanding this critical approach to community development that has shaped societies across cultures and continents for millennia.

A. Beejamruit
Beejamrit is an organic solution primarily used in seed treatment to promote better germination, protect against soil-borne diseases, and enhance plant growth. It is part of traditional agricultural practices in India and is commonly used in organic farming. he preparation of Beejamrit involves simple, locally available ingredients like cow dung, cow urine, lime, water, and a handful of
soil (often sourced from under a banyan tree). The process is straightforward: cow dung is soaked in water overnight, and the mixture is later combined with lime, cow urine, and soil to create the final solution. This solution is then used to coat seeds before planting, providing them with a protective layer that boosts germination and shields them from pathogens. Beejamrit is valued for its low cost and quick preparation compared to chemical treatments. It is rich in beneficial microorganisms that help improve soil health and support plant growth.
The preparation of Beejamrit, a traditional organic solution used for seed treatment, is simple and involves locally available ingredients. Here’s the  process:

Bhutan has developed the concept of Gross National Happiness (GNH) as a substitute for Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In this theory, GNH comprises spiritual and cultural values, including love of sport, music, dance and spiritual activities. This is a good departure from measuring happiness purely from the view point of money. I would like to elaborate on four pillars that are necessary to uphold sustainable human happiness.

Ecology

There is an increasing awareness of the need for adopting sustainable lifestyles which will not make a heavy demand on our life-support systems of land, water, biodiversity, forests, oceans and climate. In his book titled World on the Edge.1 Lester Brown has described how we still have time to prevent environmental and economic collapse. Recent calculations on the ecological footprint each one of us is leaving behind shows that our per capita consumption of natural resources is exceeding the biocapacity of our earth. Soon we will need two planets to meet the growing demand for land, water, forests and biodiversity. In this context, we should keep in view what Mahatma Gandhi said long ago: 

Fourth-generation biofuels, also known as advanced liquid biofuels, represent a progression of biofuel production leveraging advanced technologies (Chiaramonti & Maniatis, 2020). They incorporate the concept of “carbon capture and storage (CCS)” at both the feedstock and processing levels. Utilizing non-competitive feedstocks like algal biomass, cellulosic materials, and genetically engineered microorganisms, 4G biofuels ensure renewable and sustainable production without relying on arable land or food crops. The feedstock is designed not only to enhance processing efficiency but also to capture more carbon dioxide as the crop grows. Thermochemical processing methods are coupled with CCS technologies, which direct the generated carbon dioxide into geological formations or storage areas such as depleted oil fields or mineral storage as carbonates (International Renewable Energy Agency [IRENA], 2021). Fourth-generation biofuels have the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and can even achieve carbon neutrality or negativity compared to previous generations of biofuels. This concept aligns with the idea of “Bioenergy with Carbon Storage (BECS)” (Demirbas, 2010). These advanced biofuels are currently in the development and experimental stages, encompassing various applications related to technology, processing, and feedstock. The primary feedstock for fourth-generation biofuels production consists of genetically engineered high-yielding biomass with low lignin and cellulose contents, addressing the challenges encountered in second-generation biofuels production. Alternatively, metabolically engineered crop plants with lower lignin, high oil contents facilitate enhanced carbon capture capabilities, and improved cultivation, harvesting, and fermentation processes and can significantly enhance biofuels production (Dutta et al., 2014).

1. Introduction Millets, including foxtail millet (Setaria italica), are gaining popularity as “smart foods” due to their numerous benefits for the planet, consumers, and farmers (Anitha et al., 2021). Foxtail millet, classified as a major millet, belongs to the genus Setaria in the Poaceae family. It has a rich history, with archaeological remains dating back 7400-7935 years in northern China and cultivation in Europe around 4000 years ago (Lu et al., 2009). Foxtail millet is currently cultivated in 26 countries and stands as the secondhighest cultivated millet globally. It is a relatively short plant, growing up to 2-5 feet tall, and demonstrates high resistance to various stresses, both biotic and abiotic(Sharma and Niranjan, 2018). The crop’s short generation cycle of 5-8 weeks from planting to flowering, followed by 8-15 weeks to attain seed maturity, allows for harvesting within 75-90 days after plantation. Foxtail millet produces hundreds of seeds per inflorescence (Li et al., 2020).

1.1 Introduction Millets are the most ancient grains that have been cultivated since time immemorial and consumed as food, feed and pastures. Millets are considered nutraceuticals’ since they possess significantly higher nutritional qualities compared to other cereals. Millets are grown across the world for grains and human food due to their nutritional advantages and ability to withstand adversities. Millets are preferred over other grains due to their short life cycle, low input requirement and ensured production with in-built genetic tolerance for abiotic stresses. Major millets include Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.), while there are numerous minor millets classified as small millets. With an extent of over 0.87 lakh ha and a production of 0.66 kg ha-1, India is the world leader in small millet production (Maitra and Shankar, 2019). Small millets are primarily grown on rainfed uplands in arid and semi-arid climates with sub-optimal management. Following the green revolution due to extreme demands for food, the main focus in India was on the production of fine cereals mainly rice and wheat to overcome hunger and poverty, while millets became ignored grains. Furthermore, urbanization, increased affluence and dietary changes relegated millets to the status of poor man’s food. However, due to a re-evaluation of nutritious characteristics, millets have recently regained their lost prestige (Maitra, 2020).

Abstract

It is evident from the previous studies that, in the crystalline terrain, the Fractures / lineaments act as master conduits for the groundwater movements and also act as favorable loci for groundwater storage. Because of this, the mapping of fracture patterns has become very popular among geoscientists. However, after witnessing failures and the fractures turned out to be water barren at many instances, geoscientists have started concentrating more on understanding the origin and the morphology of the fractures for precise groundwater targeting. In this context, a study has been conducted in parts of Western Ghats in Madurai, Dindigul and Theni districts of Tamil Nadu, South India, using remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS). In the said study, the maxima zones of transmissivity were studied in relation to fractures systems, which are normally reflected as lineaments in satellite images in the area. This study in general indicates that the transmissivity is controlled by the fractures, which are interestingly the active faults of the Quaternary period in the area.

Frankia is potent nitrogenous biofertilizer for forest trees since it establishes symbiotic association with non-leguminous plants. Nitrogen fixing non leguminous trees thrive in temperate condition. The species belong to Casuarinaceae are an exception and grow successfully in tropical areas. Alnus for temperate regions and the genus Casuarina for tropical and sub-tropical regions stand out examples of the benefits they provide to ecosystem by the way of nitrogen fixation. They have an excellent potential to adapt themselves to grow under diverse geographical and environmental conditions providing enough fuel, fodder, pulp and timber. The microsymbiont within these root nodules of non-leguminous plants has been identified and designated as Frankia (Becking, 1970).

Historical Developments

First of all Boussingault, a French farmer during 1838 drew attention that non-legumes were capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen. The roots of Alnus were described as warty brownish biomass as large as man’s fist (Woronin, 1866). Frank and coworkers (1887a, b, 1891) studied the nodulated nitrogen f ixing trees regardless of whether they were leguminous or non-leguminous (actinorhizal). Frank believed that the bacteroids were protein deposits but subsequently he named the causative organism as Frankia subtilis. Moller (1885, 1890) reported the causative organism in the nodules as plasmodia and Frank also revised his opinion and pointed out that the causative organism was a fungus. Such conflicting results were due to imperfect techniques to differentiate between vesicles and sporangia. Later the organism was renamed as Frankia bruchorstii to honour Frank and his coworker, Brunchorst (Moller, 1890).

Free carbon dioxide in the water accumulates due to microbial activity and respiration of organisms. Surface waters normally contain less than 10 mg free CO2 per litre while some groundwater may easily exceed that concentration up to 30 to 50 mg/L.
Principle
Free CO2 reacts with sodium carbonate to form sodium bicarbonate, or with sodium hydroxide to form sodium carbonate. Completion of reaction is indicated by the development of the pink colour characteristics of phenolphthalein indicator at the equivalence pH of 8.3.

Reagents
1. Standard sodium hydroxide titrant (0.05N): Dissolve 40g of NaOH in boiled CO2 free distilled water and make up the volume to 1 litre. Filter the solution through a sintered glass filter to remove any Na2CO3, the concentration of solution is 1N NaOH. Store it in in glass bottle.
2. Phenolphthalein indicator

Introduction

Diazotrophs are phylogenetically diverse microbes spanning over various classes varying vastly on basis of physiological properties (Young, 1992), include various phototrophic microorganisms aerobic phototrophic Cyanobacteria (Vaishampayan et al, 2001), anaerobic purple-sulfur phototrophs like Chromatium, and green-sulfur phototrophs, e.g. Chlorobium, Rhodopseudomonas; chemolithotrophs Alcaligenes, Thiobacillus, Methanosarcina, Methanobacterium, Desulfovibrio or Azospirillum lipoferum and heterotrophic bacterial anaerobes (Clostridium), microaerophiles (Herbaspirillum), and aerobes (Azotobacter). Free-living aerobic nitrogen fixing bacterial genera found in soil include obligate aerobes as Azotobacter, Beijerinckia, Derxia, Achromobacter, Mycobacterium, Arthrobacter and Bacillus but the majority are microaerophilic (e.g. Azospirillum, Herbaspirillum) or facultative and obligate anaerobes (e.g. Klebsiella, Aerobacter, Desulfovibrios, Rhodospirillum, Clostridium, Erwinia).

Among the pulses, rajmash is one of the high potential pulse crops with a yielding potential of 18 to 20 q per ha. Rajmash or French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a short duration non–traditional grain legume and one of the precious and highly relished pulse crops of North India. Rajmash is known by various names viz., French bean, rajma, haricot bean, field bean, kidney bean, snap bean, pole bean etc. It is an important winter vegetable grown both for tender pods and dry seeds, which form a rich source of crude protein (21.25%), fat (1.7%) and carbohydrates (70%). Besides, it contains 0.16 mg iron, 1.76 mg calcium and 3.43 mg zinc per 100 g of edible part (Jasvinder Kaur and Mehta, 1994). The fresh pods and green leaves are used as vegetable. The antimetabolites of dry beans needs removal by cooking and soaking in water.

1. Introduction
The term “plastic” is derived from the Greek word “Plasticos" whichmeans to be capable of molding into various sizes and shapes. Daily usedsynthetic plastics are categorized based on their physical and chemicalproperties, such as thermoplastic and thermosetting. (i) Thermoplastics: Astheir names suggest, thermoplastic polymers melt and turn into a plastic orrubbery state when exposed to heat. They have various numbers of polymericchains and are the most widely used plastics in day-to-day life. Examples ofthermoplastics are Polystyrene(PS), Polyvinylchloride (PVC), Polypropylene(PP), Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), Polyethylene (PE) etc. (Massy,2017), (Sharma et al., 2017). (ii) Thermosetting polymers: As the namesuggests, they set or harden permanently when heated (Massy, 2017). Due totheirstrong crosslinked structure, they are non-recyclable polymers. Examplesinclude Polyurethanes(PUR), Phenol formaldehyde, Melamine formaldehyde,and Polyester Resin (PR) (Sharma et al., 2017). Different polymers and theirapplications are illustrated in Fig. 1.

During the last 21 years, the scientists and scholars of the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) have been working on the design and implementation of projects which could have a large extrapolation domain in respect of imparting a pro-nature, pro-poor, pro-women and pro-sustainable livelihood orientation to technology development and dissemination. I would like to write about a few of the MSSRF initiatives, which have now become state, national and global programmes.

Mahila Kisan Sashaktikaran Pariyojana: Strengthening the role of women in agriculture

MSSRF initiated the Mahila Kisan Sashaktikaran Pariyojana in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra in 2007 for empowering women farmers, including the widows of farmers who had committed suicide, in areas related to enhancing the productivity, profitability and sustainability of small-scale rain-fed farming. The empowerment measures incorporated access to technology, credit, inputs and market.

Maize or corn (Zea mays L.), which was first domesticated in Mexico, is the most widely grown cereal crop in the world. Maize is consumed as feed and food, and also has myriads industrial applications, including the production of bioethanol and starch. Due to its highest genetic potential, production and productivity among the cereal crops, maize is called as “Queen of the Cereals”. Noble Laureate Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, the Father of Green revolution stated 15 years ago that “The past two decades saw the revolution in rice and wheat, the next few decades will be known as maize era”. In India, maize is the third largest grain crop and its production and demand is increasing rapidly. In India, it is primarily a non-food cereal crop, with only 10% being consumed as direct human food, while the rest being used for feed, industrial and export purposes. The effective deployment of various frontier technologies viz. genetic engineering, doubled haploids, molecular markers, phenomics etc.has greatly helped in raising productivity of maize crop worldwide in the last decade.The present chapter provides an overview on role of frontier technologies in maize crop improvement.

India, a predominantly agrarian nation, relies heavily on agriculture for livelihoods. Over the decades, agricultural policies have focused on increasing the supply and accessibility of staple grains. This strategy has successfully reduced hunger and transformed the country’s food system (Pingali et al., 2019). At the forefront of this transformation stands Punjab that played a pivotal role in moving India from a food scarcity to self-sufficiency. Punjab’s agricultural success is globally recognized, driven by the rapid technology adoption, enabled through synergy of infrastructure, incentives and most critically, information (Singh & Kohli, 1997). Among these drivers, dissemination through agricultural extension proved instrumental in ensuring that innovations such as high-yielding variety (HYV) seeds, irrigation facilities and market incentives reached farmers effectively. While various factors contributed to Punjab’s growth, but agricultural extension remains a cornerstone, translating research breakthroughs into fieldlevel impact. Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has been a key catalyst in this journey. while serving as a premier institution in agricultural research, education, and extension. PAU’s extension system has evolved in response to shifting agricultural needs, environmental challenges, and technological advancements. Beginning in 1960s, PAU led the Green Revolution by introducing HYVs and modern agricultural inputs through a dedicated, farmer-focused extension network (Gulati et al., 2018). In its early decades, PAU’s extension services emphasized increasing productivity through mechanization and the use of fertilizers and pesticides. Initiatives such as Kisan Melas (Farmers’ Fairs) and Kisan Clubs’ facilitated knowledge transfer to rural communities, fostering large-scale adoption of new technologies. However, by the late 1980s, concerns such as soil degradation and pest resistance prompted a strategic pivot. The PAU approach shifted from purely productivity-focused methods to more sustainable and diversified practices such as Integrated Nutrient Management (INM), integrated weed management (IWM) Integrated Pest Management (IPM), water conservation, etc. Today, PAU continues to modernize its extension practices through participatory, farmer-centric approaches. The current emphasis lies in promoting innovation, entrepreneurship, adaptability and sustainability through a blend of traditional outreach and modern ICT tools. Notable innovative approaches include e-extension services via mobile apps and online portals, real-time advisory systems through SMS and digital platforms, hybrid training modules

Fruit trees can be planted in the backyard or any open space near the house. In absence of backyard area, fruit trees can also be grown on the rooftop by planting in polythene bag, plastic container, cemented pot, etc. Growing fruits like papaya, banana, lemon, mango, pineapple, coconut, pomegranate, etc. in the premises of house can fulfil the family requirement of fruits. It will help to get fresh fruits from own garden, which are free from any chemical or pesticide. There is a different satisfaction in plucking of fruits grown by own effect.

Mango

Mango (Mangifera indica) is one of the prominent fruit crops of India. It has delicious taste and excellent flavour. Mango fruit is utilized at all the stages of its development. Raw fruits are used for preparation of pickle, chutney and juice. The ripe fruits are consumed directly and are used for preparation of several products like squash, syrup, jam and jelly. Ripe mango contains about 0.6 per cent protein, 0.1 per cent fat, 11.8 per cent carbohydrate, 0.3 per cent minerals and 1.1 per cent fibre. 

SYNOPSIS

Many plants or plant parts are eaten as food. In addition to essential vitamins, minerals, and fibers, plant foods contain phytochemicals and antioxidants, which actively provide protection against diseases. Several studies carried out all over the world have demonstrated the protective values of fruits. Fruits are the ripened ovaries of plants, including the seeds within. Many plants have evolved fruits that are attractive as a food source to animals, so that animals will eat the fruits and excrete the seeds some distance away.

ABSTRACT

This paper demonstrates the ability of FTIR for analyzing compositional structures of naturally occurring crystals namely gypsum and calcite. As these two crystals occur in a wide variety of geological environments and are susceptible to compositional and structural changes influenced by pressure, temperature, crystallization fluids and so many other factors, these are extensively studied by geoscientists for interpretation of paleoenvironment, modeling diagenesis of sediments and deducing sediment maturity for hydrocarbon exploration, study of these two crystals is important. Naturally occurring gypsum and calcite crystals collected from Cretaceous marine deposits of Ariyalur area were chosen for the present study as extensive occurrences of hydrocarbons are reported from offshore region of Cauvery basin and exploratory works are going on in the onland region. It is observed that the vibrational spectra of studied crystals show specific patterns in terms of stretching patterns of O-H, C-O, C=O, SO₄ and CO₂. As FTIR offers fast, cost-effective, non-destructive method of analyses of natural compounds, as it is proven useful, it can be utilized extensively in academic research and commercial exploration activities by geoscientists.

9.1 Introduction

Hydrogen is colourless and odourless gas. Hydrogen is simplest and lightest element and most abundant available element on the earth. It is not primary energy source as it does not exist in free state however it presents in compound with oxygen (water) and carbon, nitrogen and oxygen in living material and fossil fuels (natural gas, coal and biomass). Therefore, hydrogen can be produced from these sources using some external energy. Hydrogen can be burned without generating CO₂ and have clean combustion. but with air it can form very explosive mixture. Hydrogen is considered as an energy carrier. Like energy carrier allows the transport of energy in usable form from one place to another. 

INTRODUCTION
The fuel system in a tractor engine is essential for maintaining efficient engine operation by ensuring clean and well-regulated fuel is delivered to the combustion chamber for optimal performance. Proper upkeep of this system, including regular checks on fuel filters, lines, and pumps, helps extend the engine’s lifespan and guarantees smooth operation during demanding agricultural tasks. The fuel system plays a key role in supplying the engine with precisely regulated fuel for combustion. Core components like the fuel pump, fuel filter, and fuel injectors work together to deliver the right quantity of fuel at the appropriate time, ensuring the engine operates efficiently, performs reliably, and lasts longer.
FUEL PUMP
The fuel pump is responsible for drawing fuel from the fuel tank and delivering it to the engine at the correct pressure. It ensures a consistent and reliable flow of fuel to the fuel injectors or carburetor.
Types of Fuel Pumps
• Mechanical Fuel Pump: Common in older tractors, this pump is usually driven by the engine through a gear or camshaft. It delivers fuel from the tank to the fuel system at a steady pressure.
• Electric Fuel Pump: Found in modern tractors, electric pumps are powered by the tractor’s electrical system and provide more consistent pressure and flow. These are often located near the fuel tank and can be activated by a relay or switch.

INTRODUCTION
The fuel system in a tractor engine is essential for providing the engine with the right amount of fuel to enable efficient combustion. Its primary function is to guarantee a steady and reliable flow of clean, properly atomized fuel, which is crucial for achieving optimal performance and fuel efficiency. The system consists of various components that collaborate to manage different processes such as storing, filtering, and delivering the fuel to the combustion chamber.
These processes must work in harmony to ensure the engine operates smoothly, maintaining both power output and efficiency. Proper atomization of the fuel ensures that it mixes well with air, allowing for more complete combustion and minimizing the chances of fuel wastage or emission of harmful substances. From fuel storage tanks to injectors, every part of the fuel system is designed to meet the demands of the engine under various operating conditions.
A well-functioning fuel system helps maintain engine longevity, reduces fuel consumption, and ensures that the engine can perform at its best across different workloads and environments.

The heat liberated by combustion of a fuel is known as calorific value or heat value of the fuel. It is expressed in kcal/kg of the fuel

Although plants can be grown to maturity in aerated nutrient solutions and other media, virtually all land plants, including those on which we depend for food, fibre and fuel, grow in soil. The soil has three-fold function to perform with respect to crop growth: physical, chemical and biological.

For the intelligent appreciation and understanding of various reactions and processes associated with soils a little basic knowledge of chemistry is helpful. If the reader follows this chapter carefully, the working knowledge of chemistry thus acquired will enable him to follow all the complicated chemical reactions taking place in the soil.

What is Chemistry? Chemistry is the science that deals with the chemical changes. What is a chemical change? When two or more substances combine to give a substance entirely different in properties to the individual components, the change is called a chemical action to distinguish it from the purely physical action in which the properties of the product are intermediate between the components. The latter naturally can be separated easily by mechanical means. For instance a mixture of sand and water can be separated by passing through a filter, and a mixture of salt and water can be separated by evaporating the water when the salt is left as residue. But water itself is a compound of two gases: oxygen and hydrogen. Its properties are totally different from its components. We can freeze it, evaporate it and perform a host of other operations on it without changing it in the least.

Atoms and molecules: The whole science of chemistry rests on atoms and molecules If these are understood clearly, basic chemistry is reduced to simplicity. Take a familiar object like gold or silver and go on subdividing it into smaller and smaller bits. You will reach a stage that further subdivision will become impossible. You will have reached the primary units, the elementary bricks of which the substance is made up, namely the “Atoms”. An atom in chemistry is the smallest brick from which all material substances in the world are made up. Not that you can see an atom. It is so small that even the most powerful microscope will nut reveal its presence. You could perhaps just see a collection of a million atoms as a tiny spot of light if it is illuminated with a powerful beam of light. Even then you could not say if it was round, square, or oblong. However, you need not look for any such tangible proof to believe in the existence of atoms. Even pure logic would compel you to stop somewhere if you started with an imaginary division and sub-division of a substance. You could not go on ad infinitum. Even the ancients, who knew no modern chemistry, believed in their existence purely from philosophical reasoning.

For electromagnetic radiation, there are four “laws” that describe the type and amount of energy being emitted by an object. In the following sections, these four laws of radiation e.g. Planck’s law, Wien’s displacement law, Steffan-Boltzman law and Kirchhoff’s law are described briefly.

Planck’s Law

Planck’s law describes the spectral density of electromagnetic radiation emitted by a black body in thermal equilibrium at a given temperature T. The spectral radiance of a body, B_í, describes the amount of energy it gives off as radiation of different frequencies. It is measured in terms of the power emitted per unit area of the body, per unit solid angle that the radiation is measured over, per unit frequency. 7.1.1 Definition of Biohazards
Biohazards, or biological hazards, refer to biological substances that pose a threat to the health of living organisms, primarily humans, animals, and plants. These substances include a broad spectrum of infectious agents such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, parasites, recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and biological toxins. Biohazards can arise from research laboratories, agricultural practices, biotechnology industries, healthcare settings, or naturally occurring infectious diseases.
In biotechnology and molecular biology, biohazards are particularly significant due to the frequent use of genetically modified microbes, transgenic plants and animals, and gene-editing tools that may unintentionally cause ecological disturbances or health risks if not properly contained and managed.
7.1.2 Understanding Biosafety in the Context of Biohazards
Biosafety is the application of containment principles, facility design, practices, and procedures to prevent unintentional exposure to biohazards or their accidental release. It forms the foundational pillar in laboratories and institutions engaged in biotechnology, genetic engineering, and molecular biology.
The goal of biosafety is twofold
• To protect laboratory personnel, the community, and the environment from potential harm caused by biological agents.

Introduction

Geostatistics is a branch of statistics that deals with the analysis and modelling of geo-referenced data. Its main aims are to quantify spatial variability and to create maps from point observations. Of course there is much more to geostatistics than just that and indeed some of the other uses of geostatistics are addressed in this chapter too, but the emphasis is on the assessment of spatial variability and geostatistical interpolation.

The first step of geostatistical interpolation is to quantify the spatial correlation structure of the variable of interest. This can be done by examining the observations and how these vary in space. Next spatial interpolation makes use of the quantified spatial correlation to derive optimal predictions at unobserved locations and create a map. The interpolation error is quantified as well, which helps to design optimal spatial sampling schemes that balance data collection costs and map accuracy. All this will be explained in this chapter, but in order to do so we first need to explain the statistical theory that underlies geostatistical interpolation followed by representation of the spatial correlation structure, the basics of geostatistical interpolation (‘kriging’), kriging extensions and spatial stochastic simulation.

ABSTRACT

Biotransformation is an essential step in the elimination of drugs and reduction of their toxicity. The use of fungi in biotransformation reactions can provide information about the metabolism of new drugs and facilitate the attainment of necessary amount of metabolites for toxicological and pharmacological evaluation. Biotransformation studies require the right choice of the microorganisms and also of the culture conditions (pH, substrate, oxygen, salts, temperature, etc). The optimization of these procedures is essential to achieve good results. The fundamental aspects of drug biotransformation by fungi are discussed here as well as some applications showing that many fungi are used in biotransformation studies, mainly Cunninghamella species. Several species mimic the mammalian metabolism producing the same metabolites observed in humans.

Abstract

Many airborne fungal spores are important as allergens, human and plant pathogens, in the bio-deterioration of stored materials like paper, leather, textile, paintings, historical monuments and spoilage of food stuffs. Surveys have been conducted to elucidate the magnitude of the problem. Indoor environment also plays an important role in the precipitation of allergic symptoms caused by fungal spores. The present review briefly highlights some of the qualitative investigations carried out on indoor environments like bakery, building, cold storage, cow shed, dormitory, educational institutions, garbage disposal plant, ware house, hospital, library, food grain godown, leather godown, house dust, poultry house, chick hatcheries, plastic industries and textile industries.

Over the past decade, advancements in sensor technologies, communication networks, and computational algorithms have revolutionized weather forecasting and climate monitoring. These breakthroughs are not only critical for predicting weather events but also serve as the foundation for proactive decision-making in agricultural management. High-resolution satellite imagery and remote sensing techniques now provide granular data about atmospheric conditions, soil moisture levels, and crop health (Fig.12.1).

As the present study draws to a close, it opens up a myriad of possibilities for future research and exploration in the field of the present study. The insights gained and the findings presented in this thesis may provide a foundation for building upon and extending the existing body of knowledge. By identifying key areas that require additional attention and offering suggestions for future studies, this section of the chapter aims to inspire and guide researchers in their pursuit of enhancing our understanding and driving progress in this dynamic and evolving field.

The present study leaves behind the following domains which may be researched out in future:

1) The present research can be replicated with varied geo-spatial situations viz., in different locations and settings, with different respondents, with spatio-temporal expansion and methodological innovation.

2) PRA tools and materials can be deployed to collect more specific data to compensate for the inadequate information to go for the classical statistical approaches.

3) Multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) techniques can be integrated with mental modelling and fuzzy logic cognitive mapping so to enhance the decision-making process.

4) To realize the full potential of these frameworks, collaboration and knowledge sharing among researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and farmers are essential. Continued research and development efforts are needed to refine and validate the models, enhance user-friendliness, and adapt them to diverse agricultural systems and contexts.

Depending on various findings of the study, the present section put forwards some of the policies that can be implemented for using population mobility as a tool of economic development in both rural and urban areas.

• Steps must be taken to boost up the urban services sector as it is the most attractive sector for urban in-migrants. Pro-migrant policies including some economic and social benefits e.g. free health insurance, employees’ provident fund, grater loan facilities at lower rate etc. must be provided to the migrants so that it helps the labors as well as self-employed persons of urban informal sector.

1. Rationalization of chemical fertilizer and pesticides in a gradual manner and for which there will an environmental policy in place,

It allows for the representation of causal relationships between variables in an interpretable and flexible manner, making it particularly valuable for analyzing and simulating real-world dynamic systems. FCM has its roots in cognitive science, systems thinking, and artificial intelligence, enabling researchers and practitioners to model uncertainties and interdependencies effectively (Tyrovolas et al., 2023). The approach is particularly advantageous when dealing with complex, ill-structured problems where traditional mathematical modeling techniques fall short. By capturing expert knowledge and combining it with computational techniques, FCM helps in making informed predictions and policy decisions.

It is widely applied across multiple domains, including environmental management for sustainability assessments (Özesmi and Özesmi, 2004), decision support systems in business and governance, healthcare for medical diagnostics and treatment planning (Apostolopoulos et al., 2024), and socio economic planning for policy analysis and forecasting (Gray et al., 2015). Furthermore, its adaptability has led to its increasing integration with artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data analytics, making it a promising approach for tackling contemporary challenges.

16.2.1. Players

In game theory, a player is any individual or entity that makes decisions within the context of the game. Players are assumed to be rational, meaning they aim to maximize their own utility or payoff based on their preferences and the information available to them.

‘To a people famishing and idle, the only acceptable form in which God can dare appear is work and promise of food as wages’ — these were the words of Mahatma Gandhi when he was healing the wounds arising from the Hindu-Muslim divide at Naokhali in 1946. He thus stressed the symbiotic bonds among work, income and food security.
 
Eradication of hunger and poverty is also the first among the UN Millennium Development Goals, which in my view represent a Global Common Minimum Programme for human security and well-being.
 
Achieving this goal is fundamental for achieving the other goals relating to education, gender equality, child mortality, control of HIV/ AIDS, malaria and other diseases and, above all, environmental sustainability. Unfortunately, progress in the reduction of hunger and poverty is poor in most developing countries excepting a few like China. FAO estimates that as a result of the rise in the prices of basic staples, about 75 million more people have been added to the list of those going to bed hungry during 2007. As a single nation, we in India have the largest number of malnourished persons in the world.

Introduction

Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is equipment that combines the features of gas-liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry to identify different substances within a test sample. Applications of GC-MS include drug detection, environmental analysis include pesticides residue in soil, water and plant crop produce, greenhouse gas quantification, food toxicants, assessment of antibiotic compounds, estimation of volatile organic compounds from biological systems besides identification of unknown compounds.

Gasification is a process that turns materials containing carbon, like wood, crops, coal, or waste, into a type of fuel called producer gas or syngas. This is done by heating the carbon-rich material with a controlled amount of oxygen at high temperatures. Gasification is a type of partial oxidation, which means using less oxygen than needed to burn the same amount of fuel. Knowing the necessary amount of air for the conversion process is important to run a gasifier correctly. This requires understanding the stoichiometry based on the composition of the biomass. A chemical formula for the biomass can be calculated by analyzing the elements present, which serves as the basis for estimating the air-fuel ratios through stoichiometric calculations. Gasification only uses 25 to 40% of the theoretical oxidant, producing heat for fuel conversion. In gasification, the main combustible products are carbon monoxide and hydrogen.

In recent years, there is gradual realization of the role of women in the field of agriculture & allied areas. Besides domestic work, they are involved in various types of field works relating to production of crops, milk, fish meat, egg, mushrooms & honey bee and other material. Employees in agriculture sector of the country, contributes nearby 80% of all economically active women (Bhatt, 2013). Therefore, rural India is now going through a process of “Feminization of Agriculture”.

Women are critical to the well-being of farm households. Besides child bearing and rearing, women are expected to prepare all meals, maintain the household jobs and assist in crop and animal production. Perhaps, ironically, it is because women who have so many responsibilities that they have been over-looked by agriculturalists and policy makers–it has been more convenient to label men as farmers and women as child raisers and cooks. Rural women form the most important productive work force in the economy of majority of the developing nations including India.

In spite of several efforts there still exists gender gap in the field of agriculture and allied areas. Closing the gender gap is not only the right thing to do; it is the smart thing to do for improved agriculture and food security for all. This was a key message for family farming interventions to close the gender gap.

World wide women play a major role in agriculture; including fisheries, forestry and livestock production. The nature and extent of their involvement is different in various agro production systems. Their role is diversified from management to landless labourer. In overall farm production, on an average women’s contribution is estimated at 55 to 66 per cent of the total labour (Singh, 2013).
