5.1 Introduction

Phosphorus fertilization is a problem in acid soils due to the high fixation characteristics of these soils. Soluble phosphorus carriers such as triple super phosphate tend to get reverted into insoluble and slowly soluble forms, for e.g. iron and aluminium phosphates.  Some soils in Mauritius have been shown to fix up to 90% of applied phosphorus. The fixation characteristics as related to soil properties have been studied for some soils of Mauritius. Rock phosphate offers a good alternative or complement to triple super phosphate.  In volcanic soils of Chile it is recommended to apply rock phosphate in combination with triple super phosphate because of the high phosphorus-retention capacity of these soils.  However, in Western Australia it has been shown that rock phosphate response is low. Possible explanations are slow dissolution of rock phosphate due to the moderately acid pH (5.5 -6.5), low pH-buffering capacity, low calcium absorption in soil, which increases concentration of calcium in soil solution, and poor water holding capacity of these soils.

Mechanism of Bioinputs explains the biological processes through which beneficial microorganisms and other bioinputs influence plants, pathogens, and agricultural ecosystems. The chapter examines direct and indirect plant-growth-promoting mechanisms of rhizobacteria, mycorrhizal fungi, endophytes, and biocontrol microbes. It also covers entomopathogenic bacteria, fungi, nematodes, viruses, and the modes of action of microbial and botanical biopesticides, predators, parasitoids, and semiochemicals. Environmental factors, microbial variability, pathogen interactions, and relationships with other organisms are considered as influences on biocontrol performance. The chapter therefore connects biological mechanisms with practical application, helping readers understand why particular bioinputs work under specific agricultural conditions. across varied farming conditions.

Various types of cropping systems are practiced in a farm or region. They should be evaluated to find out their stability and relative advantages in yield. Again, comparisons may be made with reference to land use efficiency, biological potential and economics. Following are the important indices for assessment of competition and yield advantage:

1. Relative yield total (RYT): The oldest establishment measure of the yield advantage of crop mixtures is the Relative Yield Total. The RYT index was designed as a measure of the extent to which various crop components shared common resources, rather than as a direct measure of yield advantage.

ABSTRACT

Heavy metal contaminated soils are biologically inactive and extremely poor in soil fertility status. These metals are highly resistant and cannot be easily degraded by either chemical reactions or amendments. Microorganisms are biological softwares capable of degrading the metals efficiently. Among microorganisms, mycorrhizas are known to circumvent metal toxicities through a series of processes that assist in immobilization in biological systems which converts toxic metals into less or nontoxic forms. There are five mechanisms such as biosorption, solubilization, hyphal transport, detoxification and dilution are involved in promoting tolerance of host plants to heavy metal toxicities. These processes are strategies that can be exploited to phytoremediate the contaminated soils. The phytoremediation strategies encompass tolerance of mycorrhizal fungi, phytostabilization (preventing entry of heavy metals into plants), phytoextraction (luxuriant uptake and transport to shoots) and intercropping or crop rotation with mycorrhizal dependent hyperaccumulators or non-hyperaccumulators. Despite mycorrhizas are natural, the indigenous population is not sufficient enough to induce tolerance of host plants to abiotic and biotic stress conditions. This necessitates adopting recommended agronomic practices to promote mycorrhizal colonization in natural agro-ecosystem or to derive full benefits from phytoremediation strategies. Thus mycorrhizas are important naturally occurring microorganisms capable of withstanding highly contaminated metal sites and offer protection against phytotoxicities caused by heavy metals.

Introduction

India’s food problem dates back prior to independence. In the beginning, India’s food problem was one of scarcity, shortage of rice after the separation of Myanmar (Burma) from India in 1937 and shortage of wheat, also after the partition of the country in 1947. Initially, the major concern was to increase the domestic supplies either through increased production or through imports or through both. In the second half of the 1950s and during the 1960s the major concern was shifted to control of food grains prices. The Government of India entered into an agreement in 1956 with the USA known as PL 480 agreement for the import of rice and wheat. The Government found the PL 480 food imports a good tool to stabilize food prices in the country. Infact, PL 480 imports were the basis of our agricultural and industrial development. The frequent occurrence of flood and drought, food shortage resulted famine in several corners of the country during pre-independence period and even after independence.

Mechanization of agriculture is essential for optimal utilization of vital inputs for crop production system such as soil, water, seed, fertilizer, pesticide and labour force leading to higher productivity and reduced cost of production for greater profitability. Thus with the support of mechanization, the agrarian sector as an enterprise needs to become sustainable and economically competitive which coincides with the objectives of the Integrated farming System concept. Mechanization also imparts capacity to the farmers to carry out farm operations with dignity, comfort and freedom from drudgery, making the farming agreeable vocation for educated rural youth as well. It helps the farmers to achieve timeliness and precisely meter and apply costly input for better efficacy and achieve higher productivity with reduced application of inputs. Small and marginal farmers now make use of high capacity agricultural machines on custom hire basis to enjoy the economic benefits. As such, the broad subject of agriculture can be understood as production agriculture, which takes care the field operations in the crop production system for higher productivity and post production agriculture, better known as post harvest technology which looks for reducing the loss of produce and value addition for economic gains. The IFS outlines the need of sustainability for farmers with limited resources of land, water and economy while mechanization aims at maximizing the profitability in agricultural system with a commercial attitude. Since the availability of labour force during peak hours of need and hike in wage very often creates hindrance in production and post production agriculture, mechanization can be the right answer to harness the benefits of IFS approach.

Commercialization is essential for agricultural development, which, amongst other things, entails mechanization of agriculture to reduce the cost of production and to increase the yield of crops. In some instances, agricultural commercialization may take place even without mechanization. However, due to the ever increasing agricultural labor scarcity in developing countries, an extensive scale agricultural commercialization may not be possible without mechanization.

The various farm operations involved in crop production system are land leveling, tillage for seed bed preparation, sowing and planting, weeding and interculture, spraying, harvesting and threshing. The mechanization of all these operation has been appreciated by the farmers which are discussed in the following paragraphs.

3.1. Concept of farm mechanization

To apply the principles of engineering and technology to do the agricultural operations in a better way to increase crop yield.

Development, application and management of all mechanical aids for field operation, water control, material handling, storage and processing.

Mechanical aids include hand tools, animal drawn implements, power tillers, tractors, engines, electric motors, grain processing and hauling equipments.

Introduction

Rice (Oryza sativa), the staple food of more than half of the population of the world, is an important target to provide food security and livelihoods for millions. As a major producer and exporter of rice in the world, India reportedly produces around 152.60 MT tonnes of rice per year. When cereal crops are harvested, it is estimated that half of the process ends with agricultural waste or crop residue as straw. It is a non-edible product, often left in the field after harvesting. Traditionally, paddy straw was seen as a versatile by-product of rice cultivation because it was used in many ways including fodder for livestock and as a building material. However, the increase in productivity and area under cultivation of rice has led to a huge production of rice straw. Moreover, mechanization decreased the animal dependency and hence the feed requirement. So the most effective way of disposing of the residue is seen as burning of biomass in the paddy field. It is important to mention that open field burning is a widely practiced method all over the world however its intensity varies. For instance (National Conference, 2017) estimated that less than a quarter of rice straw is probably burnt in India compared to around half in Thailand whereas the entire residue is burnt in the Philippines. Taking farmers view into account, burning is not only a cost-effective method but it acts as an effective pest control procedure Shukla et al (2005). The short term effects of burning seems more desirable than those from soil incorporation due to the immobilization of inorganic nitrogen which occurs in the latter and can adversely affect productivity in the short term (Singh and Singh, 2001). Also, it helps to reduce diseases that may occur due to reinjection from inoculums in the straw biomass Haysa et al. (2005).The burning of rice crop residue causes atmospheric pollution by emitting trace gases which forms ‘Black Cloud’ adversely affects human health as well as environment. The air pollutants are also a hazard to people’s health particularly to those within local proximity to paddy areas. It is clear from Table 1 that crop residue is a good source of nutrients and important component for the stability of agricultural ecosystems. About 40% of the N, 30-35% of the P, 80-85% of the K and 40-50% of the S absorbed by rice remain in the vegetative parts at maturity.

Traditional media channels have served as the backbone of agricultural communication in India for decades, playing a crucial role in disseminating information about farming practices, government schemes, and technological innovations to rural communities. These conventional platforms, including radio, television, print media, and community-based communication methods, continue to remain relevant and effective for promoting natural farming practices, despite the emergence of digital technologies. Understanding the strengths, limitations, and optimal utilization strategies for traditional media is essential for developing comprehensive communication programs that can reach diverse farming populations across various geographical and socio economic contexts. Radio broadcasting represents one of the most successful and enduring traditional media platforms for agricultural extension in India. All India Radio (AIR) has been actively playing a unique role in bridging the digital divide and supporting agricultural extension programmes in India since the experiment in 1952-53 with ‘An Indian Experiment in Farm Radio Forums’ at Poona (now Pune). The effectiveness of radio stems from its accessibility, affordability, and ability to reach illiterate farmers who may face barriers with text-based information sources. Medicinal and aromatic plants constitute a major segment of the flora, which provides raw materials for use in the pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and drug industries. The indigenous systems of medicines, developed in India for centuries, make use of many medicinal herbs. These systems include Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and many other indigenous practices. More than 9,000 native plants have established and recorded curative properties and about 1500 species are known for their aroma and flavour. In one of the studies by the World Health Organisation, it is estimated that 80 per cent of the population of developing countries relies on traditional plant based medicines for their health requirements (WHO 1991). Even in many of the modern medicines, the basic composition is derived from medicinal plants and these have become acceptable medicines for many reasons that include easy availability, least side effects, low prices, environmental friendliness and lasting curative property. India and China are the two major producing countries, having 40 per cent of the global biodiversity and availability of rare species. These are well known as the home of medicinal and aromatic crops that constitute a segment of the flora, and provide raw materials to the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, fragrance, flavour etc. industries.

Medicinal plants are considered as rich ingredients resources which may be utilized in medicines development pharmacopoeia, non-pharmacopoeia or synthetic industry. Apart from any region, these plants play a critical role within the development of human cultures around the whole world. Plant is a crucial source of drugs and plays a key role in world health. Medicinal herbs or plants are known to be a critical potential source of therapeutics or curative aids. The utilization of medicinal plants has attained a commanding role in health system all over the place the planet. This involves the utilization of medicinal plants not just for the treatment of diseases but also as potential material for maintaining healthiness and conditions. Many countries within the world, that is, two-third of the world’s population depends on herbal medicines for primary health care. The explanations for this are often due to their better cultural acceptability, better compatibility and adaptableness with the physical body poses lesser side effects. Evidently, records showed that most of the used drugs contain plant extracts. Some are containing active ingredients (bioactive components or substances) obtained from plants. Through recent researches, it revealed that plant-derived drugs were mostly discovered from the study of curative, therapeutic, traditional cures and above all the folks knowledge of indigenous people and a few of those claims and believe of individuals are irreplaceable despite the recent advancement in science and technology. A number of the drugs believed to be obtained from plants are aspirin, atropine, artimesinin, colchicine, digoxin, ephedrine, morphine, physostigmine, pilocarpine, quinine, guanidine, reserving, taxol, tubocurarine, vincristine and vinblastine. The importance of medicinal plants can’t be taken lightly; therefore, it’ll be of significance to look at the characteristics and roles of photochemical in a number of the medicinal plants commonly utilized throughout the world.

India is known to be rich source of medicinal plants since ancient time. Medicinal plants like Aloe vera, Aswagandha, basil, mint, cinnamon, etc. are widely used to cure various ailments and for several health benefits. Some of the common diseases like common cold, headache, stomach problem, skin disease, etc. are treated in home by use of various herbs. Medicinal plants can be grown in the backyard or on the rooftop to meet the household demand. Cultivation practices of some of the medicinal plants are described in this chapter.

Tulsi

Tulsi or basil is considered to be a sacred plant with religious importance. It is grown in homes as an aromatic perennial shrub and used for medicinal purpose. Tulsi possess antimicrobial and antiviral properties with capacity to purify the air. It can be grown up to an altitude of 2000 m above mean sea level. This plant can be grown in pots and in home gardens. The leaves and twigs of the plant are used for medicinal purpose. The fragrant leaves and flowers are used in the form of tincture, tea or decoction for curing cold & cough, stomach disorders, skin diseases, etc. The plant is also rich in antioxidant, vitamin and calcium. There are two types of tulsi viz. green type and purple. It can be planted in the pots or in the beds.

8.1 Medicinal use of Bamboo in Cattle: The important parts of bans (Bambusa arundinacea) used are the leaf and stem, which contain choline, betain, nuclease, urease, cyanogenetic and glucoside. The leaf acts as an emmenagogue, stimulant, astringent, febrifuge, echbolic, and diuretic. It also acts against leprosy, tympany/bloat, diarrhea, retained placenta, threadworm, cough, and cold in horses. Flowering occurs once in ten to twelve years. The plant dries after flowering. (Parabia et al., 2000).

8.2 Medicinal uses of Dendrocalamus Strictus: The leaf and other parts of kaban (Dendrocalamus strictus), which contain siliceous matter, are used as astringent and ecbolics in animals. (Parabia et al., 2000).

8.3 Medicinal uses of Datura metel, D. alba, D. fastuosa: The leaf, root, fruit, and ripe seed of sadah datura (Datura metel) contain alkaloids such as hyoscyamine, hyoscine, atropine, scopalamine, allantoin, and vitamin C. They are used for treating insanity, fever with catarrh and cerebral complications, and the fruit is used to induce heat in animals and treat prolapse of uterus/ vagina. (Parabia et al., 2000).

8.4 Medicinal uses of Dalbergia Sissoo: The stem bark, root, leaf, and mucilage of sisam (Dalbergia sissoo) contain tannin, dalberginone, dalbergin, allylphenol of latitontype, 5,7,4-trihydroxy-s-methoxyisoflorone, and are used for leprosy, boils, eruptions, to allay vomiting, and the oil is used for cutaneous afflictions. Mucilage of leaves mixed with sweet oil is applied in excoriations. (Parabia et al., 2000).

8.5 Medicinal uses of Cyperus Rotundus: The tubers of motha mutha (Cyperus rotundus) have essential oils, myristic and stearic acid, unstable alkaloid, b-seilinne, cyperenone, and are used as diuretic, emmenagogue, anthelmintic, stimulant, tranquilizer, and antipyretic. (Parabia et al., 2000).

Additionally, ease of processing (harvesting, milling, baking, malting, blending, etc.) is often a key consideration. The specific goals of a plant breeding project are highly dependent on the intended market for the product. For instance, in wheat, varieties bred for high gluten protein content are used for making noodles and breads, while varieties selected for low protein content are used for pastry flours. Similarly, grape varieties are developed with varying chemical compositions to suit different applications such as juices, red and white wines, and jams.
Plant breeders utilize various techniques to enhance the genetic composition of crops, with successful strategies depending on the plant’s physical, physiological, and hereditary characteristics. Different breeding approaches are needed for self-pollinating, cross-pollinating, and clonally-propagated plants. As human civilization has advanced, the methods used by plant breeders have evolved, incorporating humanity’s growing understanding of genetics.

Mentoring represents a developmental relationship between a more experienced individual and a less experienced person, characterized by guidance, support, and knowledge transfer that facilitates personal and professional growth. Contemporary definitions of mentoring emphasize its multifaceted nature as both a relationship and a process that serves developmental functions for mentees while often providing reciprocal benefits for mentors. Kram’s seminal work defines mentoring as a relationship between a young adult and an older, more experienced adult that helps the younger individual navigate the adult world and the world of work. This definition highlights the developmental and navigational aspects of mentoring while recognizing the experience differential that typically characterizes these relationships

Meta-analysis is a statistical technique used to combine the results of multiple studies to produce a single, more precise estimate of the effect size of a particular intervention or association. It is a powerful tool in research, particularly in f ields such as medicine, psychology, education, and social sciences, where it is often necessary to synthesize evidence from numerous studies to draw meaningful conclusions. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of meta-analysis, including its history, methodology, advantages, limitations, and applications.

15.2. Historical Background

The concept of meta-analysis dates back to the early 20th century, but it was not until the 1970s that the term was coined by Gene V. Glass. Glass defined meta-analysis as “the statistical analysis of a large collection of analysis results from individual studies for the purpose of integrating the findings” (Glass, 1976). Since then, meta-analysis has evolved significantly, with advancements in statistical methods and software making it more accessible and robust.

15.3. The Need for Meta-Analysis

15.3.1. Accumulation of Evidence

In many fields, particularly in medicine and psychology, a large number of studies are conducted on the same or similar research questions. However, individual studies may have small sample sizes, leading to low statistical power and inconclusive results. Meta-analysis allows researchers to pool data from multiple studies, increasing the overall sample size and statistical power, thereby providing a more reliable estimate of the effect size.

Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) may detect and identify chemical and biological species ultrasensitively. Through localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effects, metal nanostructures boost analyte Raman signals. This chapter covers current advances and essential principles in metal nanostructures for SERS chemical detection. It discusses SERS fundamentals and enhancing processes, such as metal nanostructure size, shape, and composition. Top-down and bottom-up processes including lithography, chemical synthesis, and self-assembly are used to create repeatable and controllable metal nanostructures. The complex interactions between light, metal nanostructures, and analyte molecules are best understood by combining theoretical modeling and experimental observations. 

7.1 Introduction
The preceding chapters have detailed the myriad ways in which meteorological data is collected, from direct in situ observations to various ground-based and space-borne remote sensing platforms. We have also explored the crucial aspects of data formatting, storage, and retrieval, recognizing the immense volume and diversity of atmospheric information. However, the journey from raw measurement to actionable insight is not complete without a critical intermediate step: data quality control (QC) and preprocessing. No observational system, regardless of its sophistication, is entirely free from errors, biases, or inconsistencies. Sensors can drift, communication links can suffer interference, environmental factors can contaminate readings, and automated systems can malfunction. Consequently, raw meteorological data often contains spurious values, missing records, or systematic biases that, if left unaddressed, can severely compromise the accuracy of weather forecasts, the reliability of climate analyses, and the validity of scientific research.
This chapter will delve into the essential processes of quality control, which involves rigorously identifying, flagging, and, where appropriate, correcting or removing erroneous data points. We will explore various automated and manual techniques employed to ensure the integrity and reliability of meteorological observations. Furthermore, we will examine preprocessing steps, which prepare the quality-controlled data for its intended use, including tasks such as unit conversions, interpolation to common grids, and handling of missing values. By understanding the meticulous procedures involved in data
quality control and preprocessing, we gain a profound appreciation for how raw atmospheric signals are transformed into the trustworthy information that underpins all of modern meteorology.

Meteorology is not merely the study of weather patterns; it is a critical science that intersects agriculture and allied sectors in numerous ways. In a world where food security is intimately tied to climatic variability, understanding the basic principles of meteorology is essential for both traditional farming practices and modern integrated food production systems. This chapter explores the foundational concepts of weather and climate, examines the atmospheric dynamics that directly impact agricultural systems, and contrasts historical meteorological practices with modern forecasting approaches. By delving into these topics, we can better appreciate how the environment influences agricultural productivity and how innovative meteorological tools can improve decision-making in the food production chain. Weather describes the state of the atmosphere at a specific time and place. It is the sum of short-term atmospheric conditions such as temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind, and visibility. In contrast, climate refers to the long-term average of weather patterns over a period of decades or more. Understanding this distinction is crucial for agriculture, as farmers and allied sector professionals must respond to immediate weather events (such as sudden frost or heavy rainfall) while also adapting to long-term climatic trends (like gradual temperature increases or shifting precipitation patterns).

Meteorological hazards are severe and extreme weather and climate events that occur in all parts of the world, although some regions are more vulnerable to certain hazards than others. Meteorological hazards include cyclones, droughts, floods, hurricanes, hailstorms, heat waves and tornadoes. The hazard is distinguished from an extreme event and a disaster. An extreme event is simply an unusual event; it does not necessarily cause harm. A disaster is an event that does cause harm in significant amounts. Meteorological hazards are often called as natural hazards. The natural hazards become natural disasters when people’s lives and livelihoods are destroyed.

Hydrological hazards are the result of either excess or a severe lack of water, i.e., flood or drought. Hydrometeorological hazard is a process or phenomenon of atmospheric, hydrological or oceanographic nature that may cause loss of life, injury or other health impacts, property damage, loss of livelihoods and services, social and economic disruption, or environmental damage. Human and material losses caused by natural disasters are a major obstacle to sustainable development. By issuing accurate forecasts and warnings in a form that is readily understood and by educating people about how to prepare against such hazards, before they become disasters, lives and property can be protected.

Meteorology is defined as the branch of science concerned with the processes and phenomena of the atmosphere. It is also defined as the climate and weather of a region. The word meteorology is derived from two Greek words: Meteor and logus. Meteor means event occurring above the earth surface and logus means to study. Meteorology is science deals with the physics, chemistry and dynamics of atmosphere and also their direct and indirect effects upon the earth surface, oceans and thereby life in general.

Climatology: Climatology is scientifically defined as weather conditions averaged over a period of time. Different regions of the world have different characteristic climates which determine the crops of any region. Climatology is derived from Greek word ‘klima’ – place/zone or slope of the earth and logs is study. It discovers, describes and interprets the climate on the basis of causes and long term effects on variation in regional and global climate. Climatology is the science which studies average condition of weather or the state behavior of the atmosphere over a place or region for a long period of time.

Agrometeorology: Agrometeorology is the study of weather and use of weather and climate information to enhance crop production. Agrometeorology is defined as the branch of meteorology that deals with relationship between weather and climate on crop, livestock production and soil management.

Abstract

Microorganisms that produce methane as their metabolic end product are known as methanogens. Methanogens are prokaryotic, unicellular, obligate anaerobes having fastidious growth requirements making them difficult to isolate and preserve. They catalyse the terminal step in anaerobic breakdown of organic substances. Even though methanogenic archaea or methanogens show very limited metabolic diversity, they are one of the most phylogenetically and ecologically diverse group of Archaea. Methanogenic community varies greatly with respect to temperature. Methanogens have been reported from permanently frozen habitats like permafrost to hyperthermophilic environments such as hydrothermal vents. However, the metabolic and phylogenetic diversity of methanogens in these habitats vary greatly. Methanogens are the biocatalysts, having the ability to provide a solution to help solve energy crisis by producing methane as storable energy carrier. Methane being a flammable gas, can act as a clean and renewable source of energy. The biogenic methane gas thus produced may serve as an efficient alternative for fossil fuels in the future.

Bacterial biofertilizers are supplied as carrier based inoculants. Peat or lignite is used as carrier material. Carrier based bacterial inoculants are applied by the following methods.

1. Seed treatment or seed inoculation.
2. Seedling root dip and
3. Main field application

Seed Treatment

One packet of the inoculant (200 g) 7is mixed with 200 ml of rice kanji to make a slurry. The seeds required for an acre are mixed in the slurry so as to have a uniform coating of the inoculant over the seeds and then shade dried for 30 minutes. The shade dried seeds should be sown within 24 hours. One packet of the inoculant (200 g) is sufficient to treat 10 kg of seeds.

Abstract

Agroforestry is an integrated self-sustainable land use management system that is not only capable of producing food from marginal agricultural land but also capable of maintaining and improving the quality of environment. It plays a vital role in achieving integrated rural and urban development. But reliable data on number of trees and area under agroforestry is not available as methodology for estimation of even area under agroforestry is not yet standardized. In this paper, a methodology for estimation of number of trees under agroforestry using high resolution satellite data has been proposed and estimation of number of trees as well as area under agroforestry in Ludhiana district of Punjab State has been done using the proposed methodology. Land use/land cover map of the district has also been generated using ERDAS IMAGINE software. It has been observed from the accuracy assessment that the estimates of number of trees as well as area under agroforestry obtained using the proposed methodology under this study are very reliable. Therefore, the proposed methodology may be replicated for estimating number of trees as well as area under agroforestry in other parts of the country.

Participatory curriculum reorientation awareness-raising workshop for key stakeholders: In the present study focus group discussion and workshops were conducted to know the effectiveness of present curriculum of extension education with different stakeholders (Students UG, PG and Ph.D, Extension teachers, Field extension workers and farmers). Data were collected by using schedules regarding the important contents of present curriculum and most important for extension workers in the present situation to be included in curriculum

The methodology has been carefully considered in order to comprehend the idea, procedures, and approaches used in the design of the study, information gathering, data analysis, and finding interpretation for the identification of relevant truths and the development of hypotheses. The methodology and a process employed in the study are covered in this chapter.

5.1 Locale of the Research

The rural areas of Darjeeling-Pulbazar CD block, Jorebunglow-SukhiaPokhri CD block in Darjeeling district in West Bengal was selected for the study. The area had been selected for the study because of the availability of appropriate respondents, people as well as the local language.

5.2 Pilot Study

Prior to beginning the actual research, a pilot study was carried out to better understand the regions, its inhabitants, institutions, and programmes activities associated to the migration process in the research area. During the pilot study period, the respondents’ situational and historical data were gathered.

Introduction

The main objective in analysing fertilizers is to assess their quality. The analysis examines both their physical and chemical composition. The quality of fertilizers is stated by the manufacturers and, in most countries, it is statutorily notified. Hence, analysis is carried out to determine whether the stated quality meets the statutorily notified standards or not. Together with the statutory notified composition of the fertilizers, the testing methods are specified. In situations where the testing methods are not notified, the prevalent standard methods are followed. Generally, the term fertilizer refers to mineral fertilizers, which are manufactured chemical products of standard composition, while the term manures refers to organic manures, compost, agro-industrial wastes, etc. The compositions of organic fertilizers, unlike mineral fertilizers, are quite variable and, thus, difficult to regulate precisely.

Fertilizer quality is notified in terms of physical and chemical characteristics. The physical parameters include moisture content and particle size. The chemical parameters refer to the amount and form of nutrients, and to various impurities that may be toxic to plants above a critical limit, e.g. biuret in urea. The efficiency of a fertilizer depends on its form of nutrient content. A phosphatic fertilizer may have water-soluble, citrate-soluble, water-insoluble or citrate-insoluble forms of phosphate. A nitrogenous fertilizer may contain ammoniacal, nitrate and amide forms of N in various proportions.

Introduction and Scope

Plant and soil testing enable scientific assessment of the needs of the plant for nutrient elements and of the capacity of the soil to supply them. The nutrient elements enter the plant in ionic form from the soil solution. Ion transport to the root surface may take place through ion diffusion and bulk transport (mass flow). Mass flow is the sweeping along of ions as water moves to the root. It is particularly important for ions that are not absorbed on soil colloids such as nitrates and sulphates. Because of mass flow, a plant deficient in N can extract all the nitrates from the soil. Potassium, phosphate and the micronutrient cations are absorbed on soil colloids with various degrees of affinity and are greatly retarded in movement with the soil water. Diffusion (movement along a concentration gradient) is the main mode of transport from the solid phase to the root surface for these non-mobile ions. There is also a possibility that some of them are absorbed by a direct exchange of an ion, usually hydrogen, between the root surface and ions absorbed on soil colloids. Most ions are sorbed by the root against a concentration gradient and, thus, the process involves the use of metabolic energy. The fact that nutrient uptake is an active process explains some of its peculiarities. Plants not only accumulate nutrients against a concentration gradient, they are also able to select from the nutrients at the root surface according to their requirements (preferential uptake).

The increasing global emphasis on sustainable and environmentally friendly energy alternatives has placed biofuels at the forefront of green energy innovation. Derived from agricultural biomass and organic waste, biofuels represent a promising substitute for conventional fossil fuels, particularly in agrarian economies where such feedstocks are abundantly available. Agricultural biomass includes crop residues such as rice straw, wheat husk, corn stover, sugarcane bagasse, and oilseed cakes. Meanwhile, organic waste comprises food waste, animal manure, municipal solid waste, and industrial organic residues. Converting these materials into biofuels not only reduces landfill burden and environmental pollution but also cuts down greenhouse gas emissions and promotes the development of rural and circular economies. A variety of biofuels—including biogas, bioethanol, biodiesel, biohydrogen, and syngas—can be produced through two major conversion pathways:
• Biochemical conversion, which involves microbial and enzymatic processes such as fermentation and anaerobic digestion.
• Thermochemical conversion, which includes pyrolysis, gasification, and combustion processes to transform biomass into energy-dense fuels.
Types of Liquid Biofuels
The term biofuel commonly refers to liquid fuels produced from recently living plant material, unlike fossil fuels derived from ancient biomass. Among these, ethanol and biodiesel are the most prevalent forms:
• Ethanol: A type of alcohol produced through fermentation, usually from sugar- or starch-based crops like corn, sugarcane, or cassava. Ethanol is used either as a fuel substitute or blended with gasoline to reduce carbon emissions in vehicles.
• Biodiesel: Produced through the transesterification of oils extracted from plants and seeds (such as soybean, sunflower, or palm), biodiesel is a renewable fuel that can be used in standard diesel engines. It offers a biodegradable, less polluting alternative to petroleum-based diesel.

Introduction

Soil is the main source of nutrients for the plants. Soil also provides support for plant growth in various ways. Knowledge about soil health and its maintenance is critical to sustaining crop productivity. The health of soils can be assessed by the quality and stand of the crops grown on them. However, this is a general assessment made by the farmers. A scientific assessment is possible through detailed physical, chemical and biological analysis of the soils. Essential plant nutrients such as N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S are called macronutrients, while Fe, Zn, Cu, Mo, Mn, B and Cl are called micronutrients. It is necessary to assess the capacity of a soil to supply nutrients in order to supply the remaining amounts of needed plant nutrients (total crop requirement - soil supply). Thus, soil testing laboratories are considered nerve centres for nutrient management in crop production systems and plantation forestry.

Soils may have large amounts of nutrient reserves in them. All or a part of these reserves may not be of any use to crops because they may not be in plant-available form. For the purpose of estimation or analysis of plant-available soil nutrients, such methods are to be used that have been tested/verified for the correlation of nutrients extracted and their plant availability. This book describes internationally accepted and widely used methods. Apart from nutrients, soil pH estimation is also critical in the assessment of soil health. Generally, plants prefer soils that are close to either side of neutrality. However, there are acid- loving plants and also plants that can withstand high soil alkalinity. Hence, good yields and economic returns from farming are possible in acid and alkali soils. With proper amendments, still higher yields can be obtained in acid and alkali soils. Soil pH also has a considerable influence on the activity of soil micro-flora and on the availability of soil nutrients to crops. It is also important to estimate physical properties such as soil texture, structure, bulk density, soil colour, water content and soil temperature.

Introduction

Irrigation water always contains some soluble salts irrespective of its source. The suitability of waters for a specific purpose depends on the types and amounts of dissolved salts. Some of the dissolved salts or other constituents may be useful for crops. However, the quality or suitability of waters for irrigation purposes is assessed in terms of the presence of undesirable constituents, and only in limited situations is irrigation water assessed as a source of plant nutrients. Some of the dissolved ions, such as NO₃, are useful for crops.

Sometimes, effluents and domestic sewage water is utilized for irrigating field crops. For using these water safely in the farming system, assessment of undesirable pollutants and organic and microbial constituents with regard to their suitability is fore-most important. Determination of organic constituents is generally carried out under two categories viz., (i) organic substances that quantify an aggregate amount of organic C and (ii) individual or specific organic substances, such as benzene, DDT, methane, phenol and endosulphan. Important determinations are the chemical oxygen demand (COD), which gives the total organic substances, and the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), which gives the amount of total biodegradable organic substances in the water sample.

i. Behavior of Ants and Goats:

• Ants: When ants come out of their nest carrying their pupae, it indicates that rain will come soon.

• Goats: Goats can sense approaching rain and signal it 2 to 3 days in advance through behavioral changes. They change their usual resting places, show little interest in taking food or water, and bawl and shout throughout the day.

2. Tree Fruiting Patterns:

• Neem Tree (Azadirachta indica): If the neem tree bears plenty of fruit.

• Baval Tree (Acacia nilotica): If the baval tree produces plenty of pods.

• These observations suggest that the total rainfall for the monsoon will be high.

ABSTRACT

Methylotrophy is a phenomenon by which microorganisms derive energy, and in many cases, cell carbon from reduced molecules that have no C–C bond (also called C1compounds). This gains significance because of its unique mode of nutrition, the ability to utilize more than one metabolic pathway and its vast distribution among various groups of bacteria and yeasts. It is one of the earliest modes of energy metabolism present in microorganisms, through which microorganisms are able to utilize a wide range of compounds, which are considered unsuitable for most forms of life. In the present chapter we focus on various aspects of methylotrophy, and the application of methylotrophic bacteria in a spectrum of biological activities and commercial possibilities.

10.1 Introduction

As one ofthe oldest and most widely used renewable energy sources, hydropower generates electricity by using the natural flow of flowing water. Streams and rivers have been used for producing mechanical energy for thousands of years. Hydroelectric power plants are located near or on water sources since they derive their power from flowing water. The amount of energy that can be released in moving water depends on the volume of the water flowing and the elevation change from one point to another, often called head. Generally, hydropower plants can produce more electricity when there is more water flow and a higher head. 

SUMMARY

Agriculture is the largest user of fresh water for irrigation to fulfill the increasing demand of food, feed, fiber, fuel and other need of ever-increasing population. Water availability to agriculture is characterized by declining in share with time, over exploitation, improper mismanagement, deterioration in quality as well as environment. This could be addressed using sustainable management of irrigation water. As per the Brundtland Commission report of United Nations, sustainable development is the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable water management aims to improve water productivity, availability and quality over an area.  Improved and efficient irrigation techniques and practices enhance water application efficiencies, and thereby reduction in associated damage to environment, which include water logging, soil salinity, runoff and leaching of nutrients and other chemicals polluting water sources, and over exploitation of ground water. Micro irrigation systems have been characterized to be the most efficient irrigation techniques. These have efficiencies even more than 90%, doubled water productivity with improved quality of produce, reduced runoff and leaching of nutrients and chemicals to water sources. Application of fertilizer through drip irrigation called fertigation could be adopted for efficient use and saving of fertilizer.  Fertilizer savings of 20-60% and 8-41% increase in yields of horticulture and vegetable crops has been realized through fertigation.

Microalgae have long been recognized as good potential sources for biofuel production due to their relatively high oil content and rapid biomass production (Schenk et al., 2008; Hu et al., 2008). These photosynthetic organisms thrive in a variety of aquatic habitats, including lakes, rivers, oceans, and even sewage, demonstrating their adaptability to diverse environmental conditions. They can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, salinities, and pH levels, as well as varying light intensities and aquatic or desert conditions. Additionally, microalgae can grow independently or in symbiosis with other organisms, making them highly versatile for various cultivation systems (Mutanda et al., 2011). Algae are generally grouped into three major categories: Rhodophyta (red algae), Phaeophyta (brown algae), and Chlorophyta (green algae), and are further classified by size into macroalgae and microalgae. Macroalgae are large, multicellular organisms visible to the naked eye, while microalgae consist of microscopic single cells that can be either prokaryotic, similar to cyanobacteria, or eukaryotic, similar to green algae (Fields et al., 2014; Maltsev & Maltseva, 2021). Microalgae are capable of producing a wide array of valuable bioproducts, including polysaccharides, lipids, pigments, proteins, vitamins, bioactive compounds, and antioxidants. They grow at a much faster rate compared to terrestrial crops and can be cultivated on non-agricultural land using non-potable saltwater or wastewater, reducing competition with food crops and ensuring sustainability (Lee et al., 2014). This has made microalgae an increasingly attractive alternative feedstock for biodiesel production, which relies heavily on the high lipid content of microalgae. The majority of these lipids are stored in the form of triacylglycerols, a type of oil that is ideal for biodiesel production. Beyond biodiesel, microalgae can also be utilized in various other energy production pathways. Some microalgal strains can produce hydrogen gas under specific growth conditions, while algal biomass can be combusted like wood or digested anaerobically to produce methane biogas, which can be used for heat and power generation. Additionally, algal biomass can be processed into crude bio-oil through pyrolysis, further expanding its applications as a renewable energy source (Mumtaz et al., 2019).

Nowadays, revolutionary changes in entire globe have led to the economic, cultural and scientific development in our society and have augmented considerable changes in our food habits and life-style. Continuously growing population had noticeably increased the pressure on land, water and energy resources. All these resources are scarce and going to be exhausted in coming decades at the present rate of consumption. Undoubtedly, production of food is more imperative than the production of energy or any other bioproducts. Moreover, with the world population rising to 9 Billion in 2050, with many inspiring to a western life style and diet, this challenge should be addressed urgently (Draismaa et al., 2013). The challenge to produce about 70% more food by 2050 for a growing and increasingly affluent world population has motivated several review papers addressing the different dimensions of the food system and food security (Verburg et al., 2013). Presently, human beings consume approximately 2.5 billion tons of dry weight of harvested crops which include approximately 2.3 billion tons of cereals (e.g., rice, wheat, and corn kernels) and grass from managed pastures (Smil, 2000).

However, burning them releases harmful pollutants, including carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and the sulfur oxides, contributing to global warming. Biofuels are made from organic materials like plants and waste, offering several benefits: Renewable and Sustainable, Less greenhouse gas emissions, non-toxic [6]. Common biofuels include are: Biodiesel, Biogas, Bioethanol. These alternative fuels help reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, mitigating climate change and promoting a healthier environment. Biodiesel replaces fossil-based diesel/petrol made through Trans-esterifi cation process. The benefi ts include clean energy, renewable resources and the domestic production. Generations of biodiesel are: First Generation include Edible crops (Soybean, Corn, Sugarcane). Second Generation includes Non-edible biomass(Straw, Hay). Third Generation include Microalgae (70% yield). Fourth Generation include the genetically modifi ed algae and electro-biofuel. [2] Biodiesel production has changed over time. Initially, edible vegetable oils like soybean, corn, sunfl ower and palm oil were used. However this raised concerns: using valuable farmland for fuel instead of food, competing with food production, weather and soil quality affecting the crop yield , fertilizer use releasing harmful nitrous oxide greenhouse gas. To address these issues, focus shifted to non-edible oils and now Microalgae, offering; sustainable, climate-resilient production, no competition with the food crops, reduced greenhouse gas emission, higher oil yield. Microalgae -based biodiesel is the future providing a cleaner, more effi cient alternative.[4]

Introduction 
Fuels are essential to human existence and account for 70% of the world’s energy use. The demand for fossil fuels is rising daily due to the ongoing global population boom and has now reached a crisis point. The world’s current reserves cannot keep up with the projected 40% rise in demand between 2010 and 2040 [1]. According to Energy Information Administration (EIA) statistics, the world’s fossil fuel sources will run out in fewer than 50 years [2]. In addition, burning fossil fuels and living in an industrialised environment have released large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), as well as a significant number of potentially toxic compounds into the atmosphere. This has severely degraded the natural resources that are currently available, including fossil fuels. The human and natural ecology have suffered significant damages as a result of the effects of global warming in recent years [3]. As a result, cutting CO2 emissions is crucial to preventing the negative effects of global warming. Therefore, there has been a greater focus on the improvement of CO2 capture and sequestration systems to significantly lower CO2 emissions from a variety of sources, including vehicle exhaust emissions and industrial flue gas [4] . Fuel production needs to be sustainable in terms of the environment and the economy, meaning it needs to be able to reduce CO2. It is critical to find inexpensive, sustainable, and clean energy options in order to handle the current circumstances. Currently, several traditional renewable energy sources, such as solar, biofuels, hydroelectric, geothermal, or wind are being used with varying degrees of success and detriment. Biofuels are sustainable and renewable energy sources that have emerged as a superior alternative to traditional fossil fuels in energy production. Biofuels have a lot of potential because they are abundant environmentally favourable renewable resources and their production is expanding globally, even though they are still more expensive than fossil fuels [5]. Researchers are actively investigating biomasses as a means of obtaining energy from renewable sources. It is commonly known that through a process called photosynthesis, plants can transform sun energy into chemical forms. Microalgae are fast-growing microorganisms that develop 100 times quicker than terrestrial plants. Their photosynthetic efficiency is also higher (10–50 times greater than terrestrial plants) among biomasses [6]. In less than a day, they can double their biomass. Unicellular microalgae, in contrast to plants, do not divide substantial amounts of biomass into supporting structures like stems or roots, which are costly to create energetically and frequently challenging for harvesting and processing to produce biofuel. Furthermore, they have the ability to adapt to harsh aquatic environments and economically absorb helpful substances. Moreover, 1 kg of microalgae biomass is produced by microalgae cells that fix 1.8 kg of CO2 and have a 50% carbon content [7]. Microalgae can be grown on terrain that is inappropriate for food production because of their high total yield and hence small land use footprint [8]. Microalgal species including Scenedemus sp., Chlorella sp., and Botryococcus sp.; are common, easier to grow than other species and may have higher lipid contents [9].

Soil is the outer loose layer of earth consisting of layers of mineral material (regolith) whose properties differ from one another and these differences are largely due to the variation in biological activities. Soil micro-environment principally comprizes of inorganic particulates (sand, silt and clay) plus certain oxides and hydroxides, plant roots, organic matter, microbial biomass and aqueous and gaseous phases. The uneven distribution of these components provides a great variety of conditions from field to micropores. The interaction of physical and chemical factors contributes to the creation of varied soil habitat and hence determines the composition and activity of soil biota at a particular site and time. Over geological times, microorganisms have had great opportunity to become distributed worldwide. Such growth and development of microorganisms as well as species diversity is of considerable significance. The existing geographic distribution is reflective of long term adaptation of microorganisms to the various environmental conditions. The preferred environment of an organism is usually referred as ‘habitat’.
