Nanobioinoculants (NBIs) represent a transformative advancement in sustainable agriculture, combining nanotechnology with microbial inoculants to address critical challenges in soil health, nutrient use efficiency, and crop resilience. This chapter explores the mechanisms of action of NBIs, from their precise delivery systems and enhanced microbial-plant interactions to their role in stress mitigation and immune priming. Unlike conventional bioinoculants, NBIs leverage nanoscale carriers to improve microbial survival, enable controlled release, and enhance nutrient uptake, offering superior performance under diverse environmental conditions. We examine their ecological impact, field efficacy, and commercialization challenges while highlighting emerging trends such as AIdriven design and CRISPR-enhanced formulations. By integrating fundamental research with practical applications, this chapter underscores the potential of NBIs to revolutionize precision agrobiology, providing a sustainable alternative to chemical inputs.

Over the years synthetic pesticides like herbicides, insecticides nematicides etc. have been used to improve crop yield. Indiscriminate application of pesticides ultimately leads to their excess discharge into water bodies during rainfall and causes death of fish and other aquatic life. Also consumption of seafood/fishes may cause biomagnification of chemicals in human body and leads to several lethal diseases like cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson, Alzheimer, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), birth defects and reproductive disorders. Likewise synthetic pesticides also damage soil texture, soil microbes and soil fertility. Their residues enter into plants and animal systems and further move into animals or humans body through food chain.

Polymer Clay Nanocomposites

Polymer clay nanocomposites has been used as to affect permeability of the maternal to gases and vapours. Majority of papers on nanocomposites have been focused on the use of smectitic type clays as nanoparticles. They are a group of swelling type of clay minerals including montmorilonite, nontronite, saponite, sauconite and hectorite.

A number of polymer-layered silicates (PLS) preparation methods has been reported in literature. The three most common methods to synthesize PLS nanocomposite are intercalation of suitable monomer and subsequent in situ polymerization, intercalation of polymer from solution and polymer melt intercalation.

In general, layered silicates have layer thickness on the order of 1 nm and a very high aspect ratio (e.g. 10–1000). A few weight percent of layered silicates that are properly dispersed throughout the polymer matrix thus create much higher surface area for polymer/filler interaction as compared to conventional composites. Depending on the strength of interfacial interactions between the polymer matrix and layered silicate (modified or not), three different types of PLS nanocomposites are thermodynamically achievable (Fig. 1 and 2 ) as outlined by Sinha Ray and Okamoto (2003). Nanofertilizers are products of nanotechnology that are created or modified from conventional fertilizers, bulk fertilizer materials, or plant extracts. They use different methods such as chemical, physical, mechanical, or biological processes to produce nanosized particles that can enhance soil fertility, crop productivity, and quality (KhetiGaadi 2022). Nanofertilizers have a size range of 0.1–100 nm, which is similar to the size of plant cell wall (20 nm), making them easier to be absorbed by plants (Tiwari 2022).

There are terrible consequences of climate change for the planet and all human endeavors. According to statistics provided by the Bureau of Social and Economic Affairs which indicate the rate of increase in global human population is frightening; by 2050 (Rebello et al., 2010), the population is expected to surpass 9.8 billion people. Thus, throughout the course of 30 years from now, the community will encounter several issues that will threaten the survival of the majority of living things on Earth. These issues include the shortage of energy, global warming, greenhouse effects, poisonous gas emissions, and abrupt changes in the environment. The usage of natural fuels as our primary source of energy has raised issues in international scientific organizations, which are working to address one of the key causes of these problems (Zhu et al., 2016). The one method to address the issue is to find an environmentally sustainable fossil fuel replacement that can meet the world’s expanding energy needs (Dincer et al., 2000). Biofuels are one of the viable options and it is an alternative to fossil fuels since they are affordable and harmless to the surroundings (Ma et al., 2014). Various countries around the world are utilizing them to partially substitute the consumption of natural fuels. For example, Brazil uses sugarcane, while parts of Asia and Europe primarily rely on palm oil for production. In the case of biofuels made from microalgae, the United States, Brazil, China, and Japan are the biggest producers. Currently, biofuel generation predominantly relies on three distinct generations of raw organic resources, as outlined by Zhu et al. (2016) and Brennan et al. (2016). These groups represent different sources and technologies utilized to produce biofuels on a global scale. Biofuels classified as first-generation are those derived from feedstocks that are suitable for human intake, such as wheat, sugarcane, maize, palm oil, and sugar beet. Biofuels classified as secondgeneration are derived from lignin and cellulosic feedstock, which consists of non-food crop portions including husks, stems, and leaves that are often thrown away (Kalnes et al., 2007 ; Naik et al., 2010 ; Zhu et al., 2016). However, these biofuel sources can partially fulfill the world’s energy demands. One method to overcome this limitation involves third-generation biofuels, which are generated by cultivating single-celled photosynthetic microorganisms capable of converting carbon dioxide and sunlight into biomass and lipid molecules used in biofuel production (Abomohra et al., 2017).

Nanomaterials have emerged as promising candidates for revolutionizing sensing and detection technologies, offering unprecedented capabilities in sensitivity, selectivity, and miniaturization. The current chapter provides a concise overview of recent advancements in the utilization of nanomaterials for sensing and detection applications. It encompasses a diverse range of nanomaterials, including nanoparticles, nanotubes, and nanowires, each exhibiting unique properties that enable enhanced performance in sensing applications. The integration of nanomaterials into sensing platforms has demonstrated remarkable progress in various fields, such as environmental monitoring, healthcare diagnostics & security applications.

This section explores how nanoparticles have a significant influence on sensing and detection, explaining how they have revolutionized analytical capabilities. Our trip through many kinds of nanomaterials, such as metal nanoparticles, semiconductor nanomaterials, and carbon-based structures, aims to explore their distinct features and how they might be used for novel sensing methods. The intricacies behind sophisticated sensor technologies are clarified through an examination of plasmonic sensing, quantum dot applications, and conductive nanomaterial responses. In order to improve selectivity, the chapter emphasises surface modifications and biomimetic coatings as key components of strategic functionalization techniques.

Nanomedicine, an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of nanotechnology and medicine, has emerged as a promising avenue for addressing complex health challenges. One area of significant interest is the application of nanotechnology in maintaining and improving gut health. This chapter provides a concise overview of the current state of research in nanomedicine's role in promoting gastrointestinal well-being.

Nanoparticles, with their unique physicochemical properties, offer novel approaches for targeted drug delivery, imaging, and diagnostics in the gastrointestinal tract. Engineered nanoparticles can navigate the harsh conditions of the digestive system, delivering therapeutic agents precisely to the intended sites within the gut.

Nanomaterials, a cornerstone of nanotechnology, encompass a broad array of particles showcasing remarkable properties and diverse applications. This chapter outlines the classifications and applications of various nanomaterials, including organic, semiconductor, metal, metal oxide, and carbon-based nanoparticles. Each type offers unique characteristics, such as biodegradability, optical and electrical properties, making them valuable in fields like drug delivery, electronics, and catalysis. Furthermore, this study focuses on the interactions of nanoparticles with living organisms, emphasizing their impact on immune systems across plants, invertebrates, and humans.

The fast growing field of nanotechnology presents great potential to influence various sectors in the areas of energy, environment, agriculture, health care and consumer goods. To overcome the demanding need of nano-based applications, various strategies to synthesize nanoparticles have been attempted. The major focus is to synthesize nanoparticles of desirable properties such as shape, size and compositions. Various strategies have been employed to synthesize nanoparticles. Foremost among these are physical and chemical methods which include sol-gel technique, solvothermal synthesis, chemical reduction, laser ablation and inert gas condensation. But altogether they suffer from process limitations like difficulty in controlling experimental conditions, feeble reproducibility, polydispersity, costly instrumentation and recovery as well as energy intensive and eco-hazardous processes. However, various factors like cost, speed, efficiency, biocompatibility etc. are still not concerned. Thus, finding a balance between scalability, price and applicability is still a true challenge. These limitations can be potentially overcome by using biological methods for nanoparticle synthesis.

Acne, a multifactorial skin condition, predominantly involves the pilosebaceous unit and is primarily caused by bacterial species such as Propionibacterium acnes and Acne vulgaris. A staggering 95% of the global population is afflicted by acne. Leveragitng NMCP strategies holds immense promise for innovating novel, efficacious, and low-dose treatments for managing acne. This review delves into various nanotechnological methodologies tailored for effectively addressing acne. Methods: This review encompasses recent advancements pertaining to NMCP carriers aimed at treating acne.

Introduction

Nanopesticides are pesticides that use nanomaterials or nanotechnology to improve their effectiveness and safety in agriculture. Nanomaterials are materials that have at least one dimension between 1 and 200 nm. Nanomaterials have different properties than their bulk counterparts, such as higher surface area, reactivity, and mobility. Nanopesticides can be formulated in various ways, such as nanosized active ingredients, molecular active ingredient nanocarrier complexes, or active ingredients encapsulated or coated by nanomaterials (Deka et al., 2021; Xu et al., 2022).

The hazardous toxic metals like cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and chromium (Cr), which have detrimental health effects, are naturally discharged into the atmosphere in various ways viz., industrial wastes, anthropogenic sources, etc. Heavy metal pollution of the atmosphere has become a frightening ecological concern that has created serious threats to the ecosystem. These metals have been identified as group I, human carcinogens due to their persistence in the surroundings and bio-magnification in biological systems. Thus, the removal of heavy metals from the atmosphere becomes a serious matter from the biological and environmental point of view. In the past following techniques adoptedfor toxic heavy metals remediation were classified are bioadsorption, ion exchange, membrane filtration, flotation, and solvent extraction techniques.

Seed is the key input in agriculture deciding the fate of productivity of any crops. Indeed, seed is referred as a nature’s “nano-gift” for agriculture. Seed is a smart delivery system where we shall make manipulation to achieve the desirable goals. The seed technologists in the country were trying to find a second or third generation technologies to address the issues of seed science. Nanotechnology is one of the cutting edge research areas that has enormous potentials to solve the unresolved field problems. The application of nanotechnology to the agricultural and food industries was first addressed by a United States Department of Agriculture roadmap published in September 2000. Nanotechnology in the agricultural front has been more useful in improving the existing crop management techniques. Most of the applications of nanotechnology spearhead around nano encapsulated agrochemicals, herbicides, nano coated gene delivery and nano fertilizers (Nair et al., 2010).

In recent years application of nanotechnology in various fields including agriculture has received increased attention. Nanotechnology offers an important role in improving the existing crop management techniques especially in plant disease management by controlled and targeted release of agrochemicals to enhance their efficiency. The nano-based delivery systems are beneficial because of improvement in efficacy due to their higher surface area, higher solubility, induction of systemic activity, higher mobility and lower toxicity (Sasson et al., 2007). The pharmacokinetic parameters of nano particles may be altered according to size, shape and surface functionalization. They can also be used to alter the kinetic profiles of drug release leading to more sustained release of drug there by reducing the frequent application (Sharon et al., 2010). The successful use of metal nanoparticles in medical streams as antimicrobial agents has also led to their applications in controlling phyto pathogens (Nair et al., 2010).

The term ‘nanotechnology’ is derived from the Greek word “nano,” which means dwarf. The development of nanotechnology is closely linked to a historic statement made by Nobel Prize winner Richard Phillips Feynman “There is plenty of room at the bottom”. Designing, characterizing, manufacturing and applying structures, devices and systems by manipulating their size and shape at the nanoscale scale is known as nanotechnology. A nanometer, abbreviated as nm, is one billionth of a meter, or 1×10-9 meters. Nanoparticles are structures with sizes between 1 to 100 nanometers. Nanotechnology may be very helpful in many areas of science and industry by utilizing the special properties of nanoparticles. Understanding and manipulating matter at the nanoscale is of special interest to researchers in the domains of science, medicine, agriculture and industry since materials at this scale frequently exhibit radically different properties from those at larger scales. Nanoparticles find extensive applications in the fields of biotechnology, electronics, textiles, biomedicine, communication technology, biotechnology and renewable energy. In the field of agriculture, innovative nanomaterials have demonstrated great promise for the creation of hybrid crop varieties, new high-efficient agrochemicals for crop protection and nutrition and new crop types through genetic engineering. Additionally, the use of nanomaterials enhances the production of nutraceuticals, the efficiency of pesticides and fertilizers, food processing, packaging, food safety and plant nutrition. It also reduces environmental pollution.

Nanotechnology is a field of study which deals with materials at nano-scale like nanometer which is one billionth of a meter (1 nm = 10-9 meter). At nano-scale, physics, chemistry and biology converge towards the same principles and tools. Nanotechnology is domain in science and technology, which is multidisciplinary in nature and any scientist, engineer, medical doctor can do research on nanotechnology. Presently, it is more of a science and less of a technology because of a lack of proper tools for studying the properties of nano-material. Nano-particles (NPs) are materials that are small enough to fall within the nanometric range, with at least one of their dimensions being less than a hundred nanometres. This reduction in size brings about significant changes in their physical properties with respect to those observed in bulk materials. The presence of naturally occurring NPs is implicated in interplanetary and interstellar space (Hochella Jr, 2002) as well as our earth in which life from the beginning has evolved in their presence (Becker and Reitmeijer, 2006). Currently it is observed that NPs can be synthesized from many biological organisms including plants.

History and Recent Developments

Richard P. Feynman in 1959 suggested that it should be possible to build machines small enough to manufacture objects with atomic precision. His talk “There is plenty of Room at the Bottom” is widely considered to be the foreshadowing of Nanotechnology. He delivered this talk at the annual meeting of the American Physical Society at California Institute of Technology (Caltech), In 1990, a team of IBM Physicists revealed that they could write (arrange) the letter IBM using 35 individual atoms of Xenon.

In 1992 a book entitled Nanosystems: Molecular Machinery, Manufacturing and Computation was published by Eric Drexler where he outlined a way to manufacture extremely high performance machines out of molecular carbon lattice (diamondoid).

Around year 2000, federal funding for Nanotechnology in the United States began with National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI). NNI defined nanotechnology as dealing with materials with sizes between 1 and 100 nanometers exhibiting novel properties.

The Government of India, in May 2007 launched a mission on Nano sceince and nano technology (Nano Mission) with an allocation of `1,000 crores.

Plant diseases are one of the causes of concern in agriculture and horticulture industry. Estimated global crop loss due to plant diseases exceeds hundred billion US$ worldwide (Orke et al. 1994; Narayanasamy, 2010). Plant diseases are caused by microorganism such as fungi, bacteria, viral, viroids and phytoplasma. Most of the plant pathogens are transmitted through seed or planting material, which can spread secondarily through vectors and lead to severe loss to the crop. Among plant diseases, viral diseases cause serious crop losses and affect the quality of products, while the use of virus- free seeds and planting stocks results in a substantial increase in agricultural crop production (Waterworth & Hadidi, 1998; Strange& Scott, 2005).

Indian Agriculture is facing a wide spectrum of constraints such as burgeoning population, shrinking farm land, restricted water availability, imbalanced fertilization, low soil organic carbon, besides experiencing the fatigue of green revolution and vagaries of climate change. To address all the challenges ahead, we should think of an alternate technology such as “nanotechnology” to precisely detect and deliver the correct quantity of nutrients or other inputs required by crops that promote productivity while ensuring environmental safety. The word “nano” refers to the size of one-billionth of a metre or one-millionth of a millimeter in any one of the dimension. We are aware that all materials are made up of atoms which are the smallest units and for example, ten hydrogen atoms put together will measure one nanometer. As the size gets reduced, the surface area gets increased by several folds.

Modern energy policies place a strong emphasis on developing low-carbon energy sources while also ensuring that society has enough energy security. However, because fossil fuels play such a vital part in the global energy system, measures to reduce GHG emissions from fossil fuels must be found. Researchers and scientists are examining the characteristics of materials at the nanoscale level to identify compounds that might boost the efficiency of the energy sources we now use. The physical properties of several materials (such as strength, heat conductivity, and reflectance) alter at the nanoscale in comparison to their bulk properties. When compared to their bulk properties, several materials have distinct physical properties at the nanoscale (such as strength, electrical and thermal conductivity, and reflectance). several materials on a nanoscale. Additionally, materials with nanostructures are more suited for material-to-material interactions due to their higher surface to unit weight volume ratio. This is a useful characteristic as many chemical and electrical reactions take place at surfaces and are greatly impacted by the chemical composition of the reactant and the surface’s structure. The goal of nanotechnology research in the fossil fuel industry is to create novel catalysts that will improve the energy efficiency of the fossil fuel breakdown process. Given that heavy crude oil contains sulphur. The transformation of coal into liquid fuels for use in transportation requires the employment of several kinds of catalysts. Furthermore, because of their structure and the presence of electrons in their outer orbitals, which increases the potential for chemical reactions, the majority of typical catalysts used in cars today rely on valuable metals like platinum. Concerns about the supply of precious metals are raised by the industrialised world’s transport networks’ explosive expansion. Finding more affordable and readily available substitutes is imperative given the scarcity and high cost of these materials, and this will be emphasised in the researchers’ upcoming work. Additionally, because of their unique qualities that relate to the phenomena of corrosion resistance or their exceptionally strong qualities that are advantageous in turbomachinery components, nanomaterials are also helpful in power systems (1) . The application of nanotechnology in the production of resistant ceramics for use as insulators in gearbox lines results in smooth coatings that reduce the likelihood of fouling in cooling water intakes. Additionally, nanotechnology can improve a material’s conductivity and produce a superconductor at ambient temperature rather than a superconducting characteristic at very high temperatures. Renewable energy sources—also known as “green energy”—such as solar, wind, and ocean energy— allow countries to reduce their reliance on petroleum and address environmental problems related to the use of fossil fuels. In these technologies, nanotechnology is also employed. Mao and Chen concentrated their research efforts on developing nanotechnologies for a select group of renewable energy sources, including fuel cells, solar cells, hydrogen storage, and hydrogen generation. This research aims to provide a comprehensive comparative analysis of nanotechnology’s application to the development of sustainable energy systems, including nanomaterials, nanofluids, and nanostructures.

The creation of molecular-scale machinery and gadgets at a few nanometers (10^-9 m), known as nanotechnology, has a substantial impact on this topic and dramatically reduces the size of a cell. To assess how nanoparticles affect the synthesis and production of biofuels, particularly biodiesels, a variety of nanomaterials, including nanofibers, nanotubes, and nanometals, are being used (1). Research on biodiesel has shown that utilizing nanotechnology and nanomaterials can be a useful approach to implementing low-cost techniques that improve manufacturing quality. Because of their tiny size and special qualities, such as a high surface area-to-volume ratio, catalytic activity, considerable crystallinity, adsorption capacity, and stability, nanoparticles (NPs) are useful in the generation of biodiesel (2). Because of their high potential recovery properties, metal oxide nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes are frequently used as nanocatalysts in the synthesis of biofuel and biodiesel (3, 4).This chapter critically evaluates the application of nanotechnology in the manufacturing and enhancement of biodiesel, addressing key challenges and potential advancements. Microalgae have been identified as a potentially useful feedstock for biodiesel production. The process of harvesting microalgae can be made much more efficient by employing a range of nanoparticles. Additionally, cost-cutting is facilitated by the recycling of nanomaterials and their incorporation into procedures including cell disruption, extraction, and harvesting. Furthermore, an array of nanocatalysts holds promise for enhancing the efficiency of biodiesel conversion (5). Classification of nanoparticles based on physical attributes as shown in (Fig.1). However, there is a growing emphasis on improving combustion efficiency and reducing harmful emissions in the engine industry and its associated fields. Several studies indicate that the introduction of nanoadditives into blends of diesel and biodiesel fuels has yielded significant results.

Nanotechnology has been successfully applied in various fields such as agriculture, biochemistry and medicine. However, its application in food systems has been new and is yet to be scrutinised. It offers a range of physical and chemical benefits that can be employed in production, development, fabrication, packaging, storage and food distribution systems. These novel nanomaterials such as nanocapsules, nanocomposites, nanoemulsions, nanoencapsulation, nano packaging, nanotubes and nanosensors have been used to improve food quality with better shelf life. However, there is concern about the safety of these nanomaterials, especially because of partial knowledge about the effects of these materials on human health.

Gold and silver nanoparticles have shown promising results in the treatments of various types ofparasitic infections. These nanoparticles are synthesized through the use of various conventional and molecular technologies and have shown great efficacy. 

Agriculture serve as a backbone in improving economic growth of a country as well as it provides a base in meeting various needs of people in direct and indirect ways. The recent advancement in nanotechnology has shown a path to develop traditional agriculture into a sustainable practice. Several nanochemicals emerged as promising agents for better plant growth, used as fertilizer, pesticides, control weeds and also used as antimicrobial agents in food packaging. Nanotechnology may act as sensor for checking soil health of agriculture fields.

In agriculture, it facilitates the development of nanofertilizers and nano-pesticides, which improve nutrient delivery and reduce environmental impact. Recent research in India highlights the promising use of nano-bionoculants—nano-formulated bio-fertilizers that enhance plant growth and soil health by encapsulating beneficial microbes. Studies have shown that combining nanomaterials with bioinoculants can significantly improve crop yields and resilience to stress, indicating a shift towards sustainable agricultural practices. Cumbu Napier hybrid grass is a cross between Cumbu (Pennisetum glaucum) and Napier grass (P. purpureum Schumach.), widely cultivated across India, Africa, Sri Lanka and South East Asian countries. As the hybrid is a triploid, it displays complete sterility and high vegetative growth. In Tamil Nadu, land area utilized for growing fodder is negligible, accounting only 1.6 per cent of the total cultivated area.

National Agricultural System

India has one of the largest agricultural research systems in the world with the largest number of scientific personnel of any developing country except China. The research system includes approximately 30,000 scientists and more than 100,000 supporting staff actively engaged in research related to agriculture. Although the total number of scientists engaged in agricultural research in India looks very impressive, it compares less favorably with many developed countries.

The present agricultural research system comprises essentially two main streams, the ICAR at the national level and the Agricultural Universities at the State level. Besides, several other agencies such as General Universities, Scientific Organizations, and various Ministries/Departments at the Centre, as also Private or Voluntary Organizations participate directly or indirectly in research activities related to agriculture.

1. Introduction

The National Agroforestry Policy of India is a comprehensive policy framework designed to improve agricultural livelihoods by maximizing agricultural productivity including animal productivity along with tree cover and mitigating climate change. The Government of India launched the policy in February 2014 during the World Congress on Agroforestry, held in Delhi. The focus of the policy is to address Agroforestry, which is an integrated system of practicing agriculture, livestock farming and forest activities on the same unit of land, storing high carbon, there by mitigating climate change. Agroforestry systems have the potential to be more beneficial than traditional agriculture and forest production practices. They may be able to give enhanced productivity, as well as social, economic, and environmental advantages, as well as a broader variety of ecological products and services. It’s important to remember that these advantages are contingent on appropriate farm management. In 2014 India became the first nation in the world to adopt an inter-sectoral policy on agroforestry, which seeks to identify the bottlenecks in expansion on agroforestry in the country and pathways to remove the constraints in a systematic manner.

Education is a process of learning, which involves both formal and informal modes of learning, which transforms the behaviour, skills, knowledge attitudes, and beliefs of the learner. For this reason, it is more deliberate than other education activities since it is a deliberate effort to create learning in a bid to achieve set goals and objectives. Ordinarily, education is characterized by a systematic learning system that is complemented by curricula and instructional materials in different disciplines. This includes talking and explaining, discussing and questioning, performing and observing so as to reach individual students. Communication is also considered as necessary as education is a process of interconnecting people, exchanging information, and learning how to deal with society members. It also develops critical skills such as analysis and developing insights, due to its capacity to offer information to be analyzed, find solutions and then make sound decisions. Education implies character building and it shapes people into responsible members of society. Education also fosters a construct of perpetuity learning which in this case is strengths toward self and career. There is the principle of non-selectiveness as one of the basic principles of education, as education must be provided to all so that all students should be given an equal opportunity. Learners’ understanding and progress can be measured therefore, assessment and evaluation were part of the program to ensure that teaching strategies can be improved. In addition, it has a 96 | Sustainable Development Goals, Health & Education sociocultural function of passing on a culture from one generation to another, and thus preserving social and cultural development and growth. In its strictest sense education is learning as it is getting acquainted with information as well as has the added dimension of moulding positive character in the learners so that they and society can be the better for it. From antiquity to the present, education has undergone tremendous change, having a huge impact on the advancement of society. When education was first developed in ancient communities, it took the form of apprenticeships, oral traditions, and storytelling to impart cultural values, religious convictions, and useful survival skills. For the elite, it was frequently reserved, preventing access for the general public and preserving social hierarchies. A teacher-centered approach limited student interaction and critical thinking, and the curriculum prioritized memorization and rote learning with a focus on mythology and societal responsibilities. In comparison, the goal of contemporary education is to develop students’ ability to think critically, be creative, and solve problems in a formal, structured manner. Regardless of one’s background, access to it is considered a fundamental right that fosters inclusivity and social fairness. The curriculum’s diversity promotes inquiry and discovery by including technology, the arts, and the sciences. A variety of student-centered, modern teaching techniques are used to improve critical thinking and participation. Education is now a key factor in social and economic development as a result of this change, encouraging creativity and producing knowledgeable citizens who take an active role in solving global issues. After all, if education in the past served to uphold hierarchical institutions, education today aims to dismantle obstacles and promote equality in society.

INTRODUCTION

The discipline of Agrometeorology, an applied science is less than fifty years old. Its services are operationally used by individual farmers in developed countries, and by agricultural or development services in more than half of the countries of the world. Its contribution to agricultural production by examining forecast is sought in virtually all countries. In many countries, the respective governments have expressed the desire to use meteorological information to a much larger extent in day-to-day farm planning and operations. The climate database is used for the development of practical criteria in planning and management of irrigated and rainfed crop production system (Martin Smith, 2000).

Though a huge set of Agromet data exists in India, its utility has not been effective due to the scattered location of these data sources and the impediments for free flow of data to the users to analyze and interpret for real-time decision making in agriculture. There is also a considerable time lag between the actual observation and data availability. In view of the importance and the immediate exigency to centralize the database system for helping the researchers and planners, a central agrometeorological databank facility funded by DST from 1998 to 2003 and later by ICAR with the following objectives was established at Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture (ICAR), Hyderabad.

India accounts for 16.7 per cent of the world’s food consumers. India’s size in terms of food consumers is many times larger than the average size of the rest of the countries, except China. At the time of independence in 1947, India was in the grip of a serious food crisis, which was accentuated by the partition of the country. The demand for food far exceeded supply, food prices were ruling at high levels and more than half of the populations were living below the poverty line with inadequate purchasing power. With high rates of population growth, the dependence on imported food increased further. However, the situation improved considerably after the mid-1960s, when new agricultural development strategy and food policies were adopted in the country. The production of staple cereals increased substantially, mainly contributed by productivity improvements. The dependence on food imports reduced and the country became a marginal net exporter of cereals. There was also an improvement in physical and economic access of households to cereals and other nutritive food products. The proportion of households reporting hunger went down and the incidence of economic poverty was reduced. The objective of this paper is to review the Indian approach to tackling the severe problem of food insecurity, which it faced immediately after independence. It reviews the evolution of food policy, the major policy instruments deployed, intervention in food marketing system, and the current status of food security/insecurity. The paper also identifies the lessons emerging from the experience of India. The paper has been divided into eight sections. The second section briefly presents the evolution of the food policy in India and the approaches to food security. The current status of food security and insecurity is analyzed in section 3. The next three sections detail the three major instruments of the food security policy. Price support policies pursued in the country are described in section 4. Section 5 examines the magnitude of input subsidies in Indian agriculture. Direct food and other assistance programs for improving household food and nutrition security and magnitude of food subsidy are presented in section 6, while some salient features of food marketing system that affect food security are given in section 7. Lessons emerging from the Indian experience are presented in the last section.

A disaster can be defined as a sudden or catastrophic event that causes significant damage, destruction, and disruption to human life, property, or the environment. Disasters can be natural, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, wildfires, or they can be human-made, including industrial accidents, terrorist attacks, or technological failures.

Disasters often result in the loss of lives, injuries, displacement of people, infrastructure damage, and the interruption of essential services like electricity, water, and communication systems. They can have long-lasting impacts on communities, economies, and the environment.

Governments, organizations, and communities implement disaster preparedness, response, and recovery strategies to mitigate the effects of disasters, protect lives and property, and facilitate the rebuilding and restoration of affected areas.

It is a well known fact that natural disasters strikes countries, both developed and developing, causing enormous destruction and creating human sufferings and producing negative impacts on national economies. Due to diverse geo-climatic conditions prevalent in different parts of the globe, different types of natural disasters like floods, droughts, earthquakes, cyclones, landslides, volcanoes, etc. strikes according to the vulnerability of the area. India is considered as the world’s most disaster prone country. It has witnessed devastating natural disasters in recent past like droughts, floods, cyclones, earthquakes, landslides, etc.

The natural hazards like floods, cyclones, droughts, landslides and earthquakes are not rare or unusual phenomenon. India is among the world’s most disaster prone areas and a large part of the country is exposed to such natural hazards, which often turn into disasters causing significant disruption of socio-economic life of communities leading to loss of life and property. It would not be considered as a disaster unless it resulted in actual damage to human life or property. According to data accumulated over past 25 years, natural disasters in Asia accounts for about 40% of the world’s total disasters while the death toll ratio is about 50% and the number of people affected is about 90%. The latter figure is about 2.2 times the ratio of number of occurrences in Asia. The figures vary widely over the decades, a result that can be attributed to a few particularly terrible disasters. Such as the 1976 Tangshan Earthquake in China, which killed about 250,000, and a series of severe cyclones that hit Bangladesh in 1970 with a death toll of about 500,000. The death toll resulting from wind and flood disasters jumped by an order of magnitude in the 1990s. But this sudden increase affected Asia’s ratio to the world total by about 15 percentage points because there was a worldwide surge in this type of disaster. Clearly, there is an extreme concentration of victims of such disasters in Asia, Another substantial increase is clear in the value of damage caused by typhoons and cyclones; it is now running at 10 times the level of the 1980s. Again, however, the ratio has remained almost unchanged, at about 40%, because hurricanes in Central and North America account for more than 50% of the world total (51.2%, 58.5%, and 54.4% in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s,respectively). It is sadly worth noting that there has been conspicuous growth in the absolute value of damage in both Asia and the Americas.

A natural disaster refers to a significant and harmful occurrence caused by the Earth’s natural processes. Examples of natural disasters include floods, storms, tornadoes, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, and other geologic phenomena. A natural calamity can result in fatalities or destruction of property, and usually leads to economic harm, the extent of which is determined by the afflicted population’sability to bounce back and the availability of infrastructure.
Categories of Natural Disasters/ Catastrophes
Floods
A flood is the result of water overflowing and covering land. According to the EU Floods Directive, a flood is defined as the temporary  inundation of territory that istypically not submerged in water. Flooding can occur when the amount of water in ariver or lake exceeds its  capacity, causing the water to overflow and breach its normal borders. The size of a lake or other body of water may alter due to seasonal variations in precipitation and snow melt. However, it is not considered a substantial flood unlessthe water submerges land that is utilized by humans, such as villages, cities, populated areas, highways, and farms.

Natural farming is gaining prominence in India as a sustainable and environmentally friendly method for cultivating cereals and pulses. This approach eliminates the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, instead depending on ageold practices, natural biological processes, and locally sourced organic materials. Crops like rice, wheat, millets, pigeon pea, chickpea, green gram, and black gram are key staples in the Indian diet, and natural farming offers a promising route to enhance both environmental health and farmer well-being.
At the core of natural farming is the focus on soil health, maintained through techniques such as mulching, crop rotation, and the use of traditional inputs like jeevamrit, beejamrit, and ghanjeevamrit. These mixtures—prepared using cow dung, urine, jaggery, pulse flour, and local soil—boost microbial activity, improving nutrient absorption and resistance to disease. Cereals benefit from proper soil moisture through waaphasa (aerated soil) and mulching, while pulses, which naturally fix nitrogen, thrive without synthetic additives.
Weeds are controlled manually or with natural solutions like agniastra, and pests are managed using plant-based formulations and cow urine sprays. Intercropping cereals with pulses enhances soil fertility, deters pests, and optimizes land usage. Farmers in states such as Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka have reported better soil health, lower input costs, and increased climate resilience through natural farming. As consumer interest in pesticide-free grains and pulses rises, farmers are also experiencing better market prices. With growing institutional support and public awareness, natural farming is emerging as a strong alternative for promoting food security, environmental sustainability, and rural development in India.

Natural farming in India is steadily gaining traction across different crop categories like tubers, oilseeds, and spices, thanks to its environmentally sustainable approach. In tuber cultivation—covering crops like potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, and colocasia—the method promotes organic inputs, crop rotation, and soil health preservation without the use of synthetic chemicals. Natural composts, green manures, and biofertilizers nourish the soil, while homemade biopesticides and pest deterrents help manage common pests and diseases. Techniques such as mulching and moisture conservation further support ideal soil conditions,
improving both the quality and yield of tubers.
For oilseeds such as groundnut, sesame, mustard, and sunflower, natural farming enhances soil fertility using organic manures, decomposed crop residues, and locally made biofertilizers. Treating seeds with cow urine or herbal solutions enhances germination and protects against diseases. Practices like intercropping and crop diversification help disrupt pest life cycles and improve soil texture. Pest control relies on natural, plant-based sprays like neem and garlic, reducing dependency on chemical pesticides while preserving beneficial insect populations.
In the case of spices such as turmeric, cardamom, coriander, and black pepper, natural farming methods offer considerable benefits. The use of vermicompost and green manuring boosts micronutrient availability essential for healthy growth. Mulching helps retain soil moisture, especially in hilly areas. Pests and diseases are controlled using herbal preparations like Panchagavya and Agniastra, which enhance plant resistance and reduce infection rates. These eco-friendly methods lead to the production of high-quality, chemical-free spices and support biodiversity and sustainability.

Natural nutrient management in India marks a transition from synthetic fertilizers to sustainable, eco-friendly approaches that focus on improving soil fertility, crop yield, and environmental integrity. Rooted in traditional Indian agricultural wisdom, these practices are regaining importance due to their compatibility with natural farming principles, minimal reliance on external inputs, and enhancement of soil microbial activity.
A key method is the use of Jeevamrut, a fermented culture made using cow dung, cow urine, jaggery, pulse flour, and soil from field bunds. This mixture significantly boosts microbial activity in the soil, facilitating nutrient availability and decomposition of organic matter. It is applied directly to the soil or as a foliar spray and is known for improving nitrogen fixation and phosphorus release.
Ghanjeevamrut, a dry, solid variant of Jeevamrut, is used as a base application before sowing. It delivers a slow release of nutrients and is ideal for areas facing water shortages or crops requiring prolonged nourishment.
Panchagavya, another traditional bio-input, is a blend of five cow-derived products—milk, curd, ghee, urine, and dung—alongside banana, coconut water, jaggery, and water. Used mainly as a growth promoter, Panchagavya enhances germination, root development, and crop immunity, and is often applied as a foliar spray.
Green manuring using legumes such as sunhemp, dhaincha, and cowpea contributes significantly by adding organic nitrogen to the soil. These crops also improve soil aeration, structure, and moisture retention when incorporated into the soil.

ABSTRACT

Endophytes are microorganisms that live inside the host plant tissues without causing symptoms of disease. There has been a crescent interest in the prospecting of these microorganisms as sources of novel and bioactive natural products. In fact, a significant number of interesting natural products have been reported in the last years. In this chapter some aspects regarding the endophytes are detailed: the relationship with their host plants, isolation, preservation, taxonomy, cultivation, frequently isolated strains, tropical endophytes, novel structures isolated and also their biological activities.

Agricultural production systems depend on natural resources viz. land, water, biodiversity, forests, pastures and wildlife. Farm activities can also have major impacts on the quality and availability of these resources well beyond the boundaries of the production system. In the post-world trade organization (WTO) era, the fantastic imagination of “one world for self-reliance”, has been shattered by the Corona induced calamity and the expansionists approach of a few rouge nations. Though the global welfare and peace has always been part of Indian traditional philosophy, approach and the concept of self-reliance, the practical boundary of self-reliance in its present context, starts from the country level itself. The idea of self-reliance at multiple levels (individual, family, society, and nation) has driven human civilization for most of its efforts, inventions and actions across the world.

A very high dependency of a large number of population on the natural resources in the developing world calls for proper management of natural resources for self-reliance. Since the early days of civilization, natural resources in the form of land, soil, water, biodiversity and climate have remained the very basis of supporting and sustaining life of human beings, plants and animals on the earth. However, in recent times intensive use and over-exploitation of pristine resources have robbed them of their legendry resilience. To effectively tackle the complex problems and to fulfil basic needs of livelihood, food security, poverty, employment, equity and environmental services, efficient and judicious utilization of natural resources for enhanced and sustained productivity is a matter of serious concern for policy makers, planners, scientists, conservationists and environmentalists.
