Introduction

Since the dawn of the civilization when mankind started agriculture, soil erosion has been the single largest environmental problem and has remained so till date (Sullivan, 2004). This is so because removal of the topsoil by any means has, through research and historical evidence, been severally shown to have many deleterious effects on the productive capacity of the soil as well as on ecological wellbeing. Doran and Parkin (1994) captioned the impact of soil erosion in their popular maxim that “the thin layer of soil covering the earth’s surface represents the difference between survival and extinction for most terrestrial life”. Soil degradation implies decline in its capacity to provide ecosystem services (ESs) of interest to humans and useful to nature’s functions. Principal processes of soil degradation are erosion, salinization, nutrient and carbon (C) depletion, drought, decline in soil structure, and tilth. Examples of ESs provided by soil include ecological/supporting (biomass production, nutrient cycling), regulating (water purification and flow, C sequestration, temperature fluctuations), provisional (food, fiber, fuel, and forages), and cultural (aesthetical, spiritual, and cultural). Erosion-induced degradation diminishes soil’s capacity to provide ESs, and support ecosystem functions.

Although fertile top soils could be lost when scraped by heavy machineries (Ngwu et al., 2005), the key avenues of topsoil loss include water erosion and wind erosion. Sometimes erosion can be such gradual for so long a time as to elude detection in one’s lifetime, thus making its adverse effects hard to detect. Eswaran et al., (2001) propose an annual loss of 75 billion tons of soil on a global basis which costs the world about US $400 billion per year. A review of the global agronomic impact of soil erosion identifies two severity groups of continents and reveals that Africa belongs to the more vulnerable group (Biggelaar et al., 2004). Soil erosion by water seems to be the greatest factor limiting soil productivity and impeding agricultural enterprise in the entire humid tropical region. This is evident in many regions of Africa (Dregne, 1990), mainly in the humid and subhumid zones of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) where population pressure and deforestation exacerbate the situation and the rains come as torrential downpours, with the annual soil loss put at over 50 t ha⁻¹ (FAO, 1995).

In simple words natural resources can be defined as any part of our environment such as land, air, minerals, forest, rangeland, wild life, fish and human beings.

The sum total of all physical, chemical, biological and social factors which compose the surroundings of man is referred to as environment and each component of these surroundings constitute a “resource”.  The natural resources are land, water, air, minerals, forests, rangeland, wild life or even human beings known as natural resource.

The five basic natural resources are energy, matter, space, time and diversity.

1. INTRODUCTION

The paradigm of world’s livelihood is built on the basic foundation of natural resources which includes humans, plants, animals, soils and minerals, water and air. But the very livelihood of these resources are at stake because they are strongly linked and dependant on each other. And to add, the material resource namely ‘economy’ has invaded the tranquil habitat and life of the community of natural resources. Thus the present crisis is challenging livelihood of each of these natural resources whether it is human, plant or water or earth and the element of economy is interfering with the natural recourse of human depending on water and soil; and human, plant, animal together are depending on soil, water and air. But when the livelihood of soil, water and air is at stake how human, plant and animal can survive; hence the design of livelihood of world has the essential ingredients of all natural resources.

We humans are selfish and concerned about our livelihood security only and try to over-exploit other natural resources and assumed themselves as the master of all natural resources. Practically, there is war going on between and among natural resources. The world could be better if each natural resource has its own right with prospects to safeguard its livelihood and all resources together with better livelihood could offer the lively world.

2. UTILIZATION OF NATURAL RESOURCES

We should underscore that none of the natural resources are in ‘plenty’ and that we should ‘economize’ on each natural resource to build together the world’s livelihood. The food security of humans can not be attained without plants and plant security can nor be achieved without soil and water and it is impossible to keep secured soil and water without economics of management.

In short, the livelihood security of humans is entirely dependant on all other natural resources coupled with the material resource economy. It is incumbent on us to initiate appropriate steps from gross root to policy levels to make the world better.

Conservation has always been one of the most important applications of ecology.Unfortunately, the term “conservation” suggest “hoarding”, as if the idea were simply to ration static supplies so that there would be some left for the future. In the eye of the general public the “conservationist” is too often presumed to be an antisocial person who is against any kind of “development”. What the real conservationist is  against  is unplanned  development  that breaks  ecological  as  well as human laws. The true aim of conservation, is two fold–
    
(1)     To ensure the  preservation of a  quality  environment that considers esthetic and recreational as well as product needs; and  
    
(2)     To ensure as continuous yield of useful plants, animals and materials by establishing a balanced cycle of harvest and renewal.

Forests are valuable renewable resources for humanity on Earth. The country’s forest cover has been estimated to comprise 19.39% of its entire geographical area. Forests consist primarily of trees that offer wood that can be transformed into solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels. Forests play a crucial role in regulating the Earth’s temperature by serving as carbon dioxide filters. They provide habitats and shelters for numerous species and also contribute to the visual beauty of the environment. Forests supply the necessary resources for a range of wood related industries, including pulp and paper, composite wood, rayon and other synthetic fibers, sporting goods, furniture, boat
construction, and matches. Timber plays a crucial role in the construction of buildings.Various products, such as bamboos, resins, gums, oils, fibers, medicines, katha, lac, shellac, etc., are derived from forests.
The country’s forest cover has been calculated to be 637,293 square kilometers, accounting for 19.39% of the country’s total geographic area. This falls short of the stipulated requirement, which is 30% of the entire land area. The geographic region is comprised of 11.48% dense forest, 7.76% open forest, and 0.15% mangrove. World Forest Day is observed on March 21st, while National Forest Day is celebrated on September 11th.

“Natural” means an ecosystem not influenced by man and resources means that reserve stock of supply which living things can take from nature for sustenance of life. In reference to man, natural resources can be defined as those natural reserve stocks of supply which man utilizes for his sustenance and welfare. The reservoirs of natural resources are the sun,  the  atmosphere,  the  lithosphere  and the  hydrosphere.  Natural resources include energy, air, water, soil, minerals, plants and animals. The nature of resource depends upon many factors such as scientific and technological development of the society, profession of that particular society, and culture.

Natural resources are the resources present naturally in the environment. These resources are used by human being for their survival. Minerals, building stones, forests, and various energy resources are known as natural resources. Natural resources have been extracted and utilized since ancient times but as the population increased, the demand of natural resources are increasing day by day.

Natural soil health management plays a crucial role in ensuring longterm productivity, resilience, and environmental sustainability. One of the key practices in natural farming for maintaining soil health is the use of Jeevamrutha, a fermented microbial culture prepared using cow dung, cow urine, jaggery, pulse flour, and a small quantity of local soil. When applied to fields, Jeevamrutha acts as a catalytic agent that stimulates biological activity in the soil, promoting the growth of beneficial microbes that enhance nutrient cycling and improve soil fertility. It is typically applied once every 15 days to maintain microbial balance.
Another important technique is mulching, where dry or green plant biomass is spread over the soil surface. Mulching helps retain soil moisture, reduces erosion, and regulates soil temperature. As the mulch decomposes, it adds organic matter to the soil, improving soil texture, aeration, and water-holding capacity. Mulching also supports the proliferation of earthworms and soil microbes, which are essential for a healthy soil ecosystem.
Crop rotation and intercropping are practiced to maintain soil fertility and disrupt pest and disease cycles. By alternating deep-rooted and shallow-rooted plants, nutrients are used efficiently and naturally replenished. Intercropping with legumes enriches the soil with nitrogen through biological nitrogen fixation, further supporting soil health.
Natural farming avoids or minimizes tillage to prevent disturbance of the soil’s natural structure and microbial life. Minimal tillage helps maintain soil aggregates and protects the habitats of soil-dwelling organisms, ensuring the soil ecosystem remains intact.

Natural farming for vegetable cultivation is steadily gaining popularity in India due to its eco-friendly methods, affordability, and health benefits. This system
excludes the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and genetically modified seeds, instead relying on time-tested ecological techniques and locally sourced inputs. Common vegetables grown under this method include tomato, brinjal, okra, chilli, leafy greens, and gourds.
The focus of natural farming is on enriching soil health and encouraging microbial activity, which supports healthy plant development. Inputs like Jeevamrit—a blend of cow dung, cow urine, jaggery, gram flour, and soil—boost soil microbes and improve nutrient absorption. Beejamrit is applied to seeds to guard against soil-borne pathogens. Mulching using dry leaves or plant residues helps maintain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce weed growth, thereby creating ideal conditions for vegetable growth.
Pests are managed using natural remedies like Agniastra, Brahmastra, and herbal formulations made from neem, garlic, ginger, and chillies. These treatments are environmentally safe and do not harm beneficial insects or soil fauna.
Practices such as crop rotation and intercropping with legumes help enrich the soil with nitrogen and interrupt pest cycles. Seasonal vegetable planting tailored to local climate and soil conditions improves resilience and reduces the need for inputs. The sun is a hot ball of glowing gases at the heart of the solar system. Its radiant energy is practically the only energy source to the earth. Very small and insignificant quantities of energy are available from other sources such as the interior of the earth, the moon, and other stars. Without the sun’s intense energy and heat, there would be no life on earth.

PROPERTIES OF SOLAR RADIATION

The mean distance of the sun from the earth, also known as one astronomical unit (1 AU), is approximately 1.496 × 10⁸ km, though the distance varies as the earth revolves round the sun in an elliptical orbit. At this average distance, light travels from the sun to earth in about 8 minutes and 19 seconds. The energy of the sunlight supports almost all life on earth by photosynthesis, and drives earth’s climate and weather. The minimum sun-earth distance is about 0.983 AU and the maximum is approximately 1.017 AU. The earth is at its closest point to the sun (perihelion) on around January 3 and at its farthest point (aphelion) on around July 4.

The sun makes up about 99.86% of the mass of the entire solar system. The visible disk or photosphere has a radius of 6.599 × 10⁵ km, and the solar mass is 1.989 × 10³⁰ kg. The sun is a completely gaseous body. The chemical composition (by mass) of the outer layers of sun is 71% hydrogen, 26.5% helium, and 2.5% heavier elements like oxygen, carbon, neon, and iron among others. Since the sun is not a solid body, different parts of the sun rotate at different rates. At the equator, the sun spins once about every 25 earth days, but at its poles the sun rotates once on its axis every 36 days.

Introduction

Agricultural organic waste residues pose a significant challenge in India, generating approximately 700 million tonnes annually, with agri-residue trash reaching around 998 million tonnes per year (Kannan and Kallapiran, 2022; FAO, 2022). These wastes, including sugarcane bagasse, paddy and wheat straw, husk, vegetable and food waste, jute fibers, crop stalks, and other materials, often face improper disposal methods such as burning or dumping, which contribute to environmental pollution and health hazards (Singh et al., 2020; Sharma and Patel, 2019). Proper management and treatment of agricultural waste are crucial for sustainable agriculture and environmental protection (Kumar et al., 2021). Composting is a cost-effective biological treatment that converts these residues into valuable resources like plant nutrients, reducing the carbon-to-nitrogen (C:N) ratio and enhancing soil productivity (Kannan and Kallapiran, 2022; Gupta et al., 2020). Aerobic microbes play a key role in breaking down complex organic materials during the composting process, leading to ecological succession of microbial communities. This transformation can be measured through various quality and stability indicators, such as the C:N ratio, temperature, pH, moisture content, and the presence of pathogens like coliform bacteria (FAO, 2012; Patel and Verma, 2021).

Introduction
Three districts of South Gujarat i.e., Surat, Navsari and Valsad are front-runners in horticulture cultivation. These are also part of an agri-export zone for fruits and vegetables. But, the life of these fruit- farmers was made miserable by tiny fruit fly which is a major pest of mango, sapota and cucurbits. Intensity of damage recorded was as high as over 30 per cent in mango and sapota, and between 20-40 per cent in cucurbitaceous vegetables. Fruit flies cause heavy damage in terms of quality and quantity to the farmers every year. Insecticidal sprays, control infestation little bit, but they are not only uneconomical but they leave residual effect much above tolerance limit, adversely affecting the prospects of export of such fruits and vegetables. Fruit flies are a modern-day pestilence which ravage production. These flies, moreover, are good fliers and therefore their spread is extensive. Hence, area wide adoption of management strategy is required. Male Annihilation Technique (MAT), an Integrated Pest Management Technique (IPM), which uses sexual lures to capture males of fruit flies and kill them, is the only way to control growth and spread of fruit flies. This however, requires a community approach for implementation. Navsari Agricultural University designed, developed and commercialized an eco-friendly, economical and easily adoptable fruit fly trap popularly known as “Nauroji-Stonehouse Fruit Fly Trap”. The trap uses Methyl Eugenol and Cue lure as par pheromones well-known for fruit flies. In this trap, plywood blocks are soaked in the solution of lures + solvent + insecticide. Such traps remain effective for 5 to 6 months, which cover the entire fruiting period in mangos, sapota as well as cucurbitaceous vegetables and no recharge is necessary. It is eco- friendly, economical and easily adoptable. It was decided to adopt this technology and spread it in the Surat- Navsari- Valsad belt for controlling and managing the fruit fly problem. It was also recognized that wide area adoption would help in developing this zone as a Pest Free Area (PFA). The project was taken up under RKVY.
About the Technology Addressed and Extension Management Practices
Nauroji-Stonehouse Fruits Fly Traps are prepared in food quality Testing Laboratory, NAU Navsari. Six talukas viz, Gandevi, Chikhali, Valsad, Pardi, Dharampur and Kaprada of Navsari and Valsad districts were selected for the purpose. A block of orchards in each village in each Taluka was selected for first year implementation. Other blocks were selected during the following years.

What is that the grower wants to achieve while he nourishes the crop with costly fertilizer inputs? He would like to get maximum output (yield and quality) of the produce; and for the maximization of out-put the fertilizer input should be utilized by the crop to its maximum potential. Thus it is not higher fertilizer dose that decides the highest yield; but the highest efficiency in crop’s use of those fertilizers. The efficiency, yield/unit fertilizer can be enhanced by the following factors;

a) Plant roots absorbing (in-take) total quanta of applied fertilizer and minimizing the loss of applied nutrients by not having spare quantities lying around the soil profile. This is possible only if the quantum of application matches with the quantum of need.

b) Plants utilizing the absorbed nutrients for metabolic activities concurrent to absorption. This is possible only if the fertilizers are applied in times of need of the plants and not before or after. This compels the grower to know the physiological need of the nutrient during each developmental stages; which nutrient required when.

Here the grower must have a powerful tool or method to provide nutrients to the plants strictly following the above two factors. Fertigation offers an opportunity to practice nutrient inputs based on the above two factors: the grower is able to correctly decide the dose, type and time of providing the correct nutrient at precise quantity and at the required stage of plant/ crop development.

Thus the purpose of Agriculture, to maximize yield and quality of crops and minimize the costs of production while maintaining sustainability can be put into practice by fertigation. Two most important prerequisites to achieve all of these are the optimal and balanced supply of water and nutrients. Tuning of plant nutrient supply with the uptake and utilization rates by crops is essentially an art and is made doable by fertigation technology.

Introduction Millets, once considered as humble and forgotten grains, have made a remarkable comeback owing to their numerous health benefits, sustainability, and resilience in diverse agroclimatic conditions. Millet consumption is gaining momentum globally and thus it becomes imperative to establish clear and comprehensive standards for these grains. The chapter gives an insight into the reasons why millet standards are necessary, the challenges associated with implementing such standards and advocacy for a concerted effort to promote these nutritious grains as staples in our diets.

Abstract

Water scarcity and soil erosion are the two most severe problems in arid region of Gujarat, particularly in Kachchh district being entirely under hot arid climate. Present study examines need of soil and water conservation measures in Kachchh district utilizing topographical details and 34-year (1980-2013) annual rainfall data for ten rainfall gauging stations. The impact of three factors, i.e. rainfall, topography and drainage pattern, on the water scarcity and soil erosion was studied. The rainfall characteristics in the study area were explored by computing basic statistical properties, plotting rainfall bar charts and drawing box-whisker plots. Furthermore, topographic features are examined by using Google Earth image and available topographical details. Drainage characteristics and pattern are explained and usefulness of farm pond for water conservation is demonstrated.

Introduction

Plant Parasitic Nematodes (PPN) belonging to the kingdom Animalia are considered the most serious threat to agriculture and horticulture crops worldwide. The estimated yield loss on average is about 173 billion USD (12.3%), among which developing countries are more prone to nematode infestation (14.46%) than developed countries (8.8%). Nevertheless, these PPN aggravate the loss by forming disease complexes with other soil-borne pathogens (Jones et al., 2013). PPN gain entry onto the host roots through their secretome which secretes various kinds of proteins that are mandatory for the expression of disease symptoms in host plants. These proteins are generally called Nematode-Associated Molecular Patterns (NAMPs). The management of nematodes through synthetic nematicides paves the way for the production of commodities with toxic residues that may have severe ill effects after consumption. However, the use of resistant plants is another strategy to combat major PPN and suppress their population in soil and roots. Recent research progress has revealed the various defence mechanisms exhibited by plants against the invasion of PPN. Here we will discuss in brief about the various mechanisms followed by the host plants to recognise the invading PPNs and the resulting host immune response in response to recognition of various effector proteins of PPN.

Plant parasitic nematodes are microscopic, thread like, soil-born organism, found in every conceivable environment. Severity of nematodes as plant pathogen is more a problem in tropical than temperate climate. These organisms are basically root feeders causing injury to the plants, which adversely affect the function of the root to absorb and translocate nutrients and water efficiently. This result into nutrient deficiency like symptoms, and as such nematode problems go unnoticed. Such symptoms are not corrected even after a dose of fertilizers.

Based on feeding habits, they are classified as migratory ectoparasitic, sedentary semi-endoparasitic or endoparasitic nematodes. They feed silently but constantly without killing the host producing debilitating symptoms and in the process reproducing to great numbers at the end of the crop season. Normally, nematodes complete their life cycles in a span of 20-25 days at temperature of 25-30 °C. They have a great egg laying capacity, which varies from 40-1000 eggs.

The most important nematode is root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne sp. distributed worldwide and can infest more than 2000 species of plants. Cereal cyst nematode, Heterodera avenae - an important nematode pest of wheat, barley and oat, citrus nematode, Tylenchulus semipenetrans associated with citrus dieback and slow decline, burrowing nematode, Radopholus similis causing spreading decline in plantation crops, the reniform nematode, Rotylenchulus reniformis in vegetables and cotton and the rice root nematode, Hirschmanniella spp in lowland rice are few other damaging nematodes.

Seed spices have prominent place in India’s national economy because of their very high domestic consumption and growing demand for export. This group of spices, being consisting of mostly annual crops, is grown extensively in rotation with food and cash crops and also as inter crops under rain fed as well as irrigated conditions.

There are about 20 seed spice crops grown in India. Out of which nine are important in terms of production and export. The most important ones are coriander, cumin, fennel and fenugreek (major seed spices) and ajowain, aniseed, black cumin, celery and dill (minor seed spice crops). Although these crops are grown all over India but Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are the main seed spice growing states.

Nematodes are cosmopolitan and ubiquitous in occurrence. These have been reported in all kinds of ecological niche. Accordingly, different kinds of nematode fauna had evolved with distinct morphological features and physiological variability. However, development and perception keep changing with the ambient environment. Agriculture has progressed with leap and bounce as human being has managed this to its maximum utility. The fast changes in agriculture definitely influenced the ecological niche and affected the flora and fauna. Consequently, specific and unspecific kind of relation evolved between host and parasite. With the thumb rule of ecological balance or homeostasis. In the dynamic Mother Nature, multispecies heterogeneous complex is sustained and nature do not perpetuate homogeneity.

Introduction

Plantation crops are high value commercial crops which are broadly classified as estate crops consisting of crops like tea, coffee and rubber and small holders plantation crops like coconut, cashew, arecanut, cocoa etc. Spices especially black pepper, cardamom, vanilla, tree spices like clove, nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice are generally grown as mixed crops in perennial cropping systems. In India, plantation crops including spices are grown in an area of three million hectares and generate an annual income of more than Rs, 5,53,630 million. They are valued for multifarious uses to meet the human needs such as food, oil, industrial raw materials, beverages and confectionary items. Pests and diseases are the major limiting factors in increasing the productivity of these crops. Among the pests, nematodes have got a major role in devastating the pepper plantations by the involvement in slow wilt disease, nematode diseases of cardamom nurseries, root-knot nematode infestation in ginger, turmeric, clove, nutmeg, allspice, lesion nematode infestation in tea, coffee, etc.

Abstract

Satellite imagery interpretation has shown the existence of a major Palaeochannel system in the Great Indian desert. These palaeochannels belong to the mythological Sarasvati river, which seems to have flowed southwesterly close to the Aravalli hill ranges and joined the sea in the Great Rann of Kutch. Subsequently it seems to have shifted northwesterly, and more precisely in an anti-clockwise direction and got buried in the desert in Anupgarh plains. While its oldest course is the now misfit Luni river, its final trace is now represented by Ghaggar river. Whereas its overall northwesterly migration is attributed to NE-SW trending cymatogenic arching along the Great Rann of Kutch in the southwest to the Siwalik hills in the northeast, its multivariate palaeodrainage is attributed to block faulting and land subsidence in the Bikaner sector.

Introduction 
NEP was announced by Sri Narendra Modi, the PM of India on July 29,2020. The system was introduced after the debates by experts from various fields. The earlier education system was 10+2+3 which changed to 5+3+3+4.The NEP 2020 have less curriculum contents and increases learning, reasoning and logical skills. After the completion of UG courses in the higher education they may opt for the Research Methodology. The 5+3+3+4 design is equivalent to the age groups 3-8 years, the foundational stage which is mainly based on play or activity based learning, 8-11 years, the preparatory stage which is based on play, discovery, activity based and interactive classroom learning, 11-14 years, the middle stage is based on experiential learning in Science, Mathematics, Arts, Social Science and Humanities and 15-18 years, the secondary stage emphasized on multidisciplinary study, greater critical thinking, flexibility, student choice of subjects. Government will constitute a Gender Composition plan to provide equal and standard education to all girls and third gender learners. 10th and 12th standard students are no longer to sit for board exams which will be accessible to test core competencies rather than memorised facts with all students allowed to take the exam twice. Internships will be started from 6th standard. The teaching upto 5th standard will be in regional languages and mother tongue. The assessment covers reforms with 360 degrees overall progress report tracking the progress for achieving learning outcomes. Within 2030, the B.Ed degree duration will be 4 years. The holistic U.G education will be having several exit options and certification will be provided.

Construction of any building, airplane, poultry farm, dairy farm, agricultural business, even a new product are known as projects that require money and time, thus, all projects need to be finished in the least amount of time possible. All projects involve multiple activities, and all these actions need to be logically coordinated and successfully completed within the expected time frame. PERT and CPM are useful techniques for this purpose. PERT stands for Program Evaluation and Review Technique and CPM represent Critical Path Method. These techniques separate projects into various tasks and events and organize them logically in a diagram called a grid. Time estimates are obtained to conduct these different tasks and the total project time is decided based on these estimated times. With the help of these methods, the project can be completed in the given time and it also provides important information about the various activities related to the project and the project manager knows the importance of the various activities to which he pays more attention to reduce the time spent on the project.

Pre-dominant farming systems in various regions of India

The quick survey conducted as a part of characterization of existing farming systems throughout the country indicates existence of 19 pre-dominant farming systems with majority as crop + livestock (85%). Although crop + livestock system is dominating in the country, based on the per cent contribution to net income, the systems are classified as crop, horticulture, livestock, fisheries dominant systems where in dominant component contributes more than 50% of the total net returns. Accordingly, it was found that crop dominant farming systems are existing in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Kerala, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, NorthEast, Maharashtra, Orissa, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal while livestock dominant systems are present in Rajasthan and Parts of Gujarat. West Bengal, parts of Odisha and Assam states have the fisheries as a major source of income to the existing farming systems. The scope for promotion of horticulture (fruit) based systems exists in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, parts of Uttar Pradesh and in Sikkim while plantation dominant systems are available in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Kerala. In selected states and locations, highly diversified systems also exists where in none of the component contributes for 50% or more to the returns. The characterization survey data of existing farming systems in different states/zones are being interpreted and brought out in the form of National Atlas on Farming Systems. Though the various farming systems exists in the country, integration of input and output within the system is either completely lacking or at partial integration. Competition exists within and outside the farm for various byproducts generated. Cow dung is the best example as dung is required for improving the fertility of soil and meeting the household fuel. Hence, synergy needs to be made by appropriate allocation for making farming as a profitable option. Sustainable farming systems should aim for long term productivity, profitability, recycling of resources and employment generation. The monetary returns under different farming systems practiced in different parts of the country are given in Fig 1. Among the various existing systems in the country, coconut +banana+ cocoa +pineapple + nutmeg (FS9) gives the higher return of Rs 1.27 lakhs/annum.

Introduction

The Indian fisheries sector is set in a unique and diverse set of resources ranging from the pristine waters of the Himalayas to the sprawling Indian Ocean. The fisheries biodiversity of the country encompasses a wide spectrum of physical and biological components that support the livelihoods of millions of people. Fisheries resources are set in different ecosystems. With growing population and the increasing demand for fish protein, the need for sustainable development of aquatic resources is now felt much more than ever before.

Fisheries and aquaculture remain important sources of food, nutrition, income and livelihoods for hundreds of millions of people around the world. Global capture and culture fish production during 2019 were 97 and 82 million tonnes, respectively with India being second largest producer of fish in the world after China. From 0.75 million tonnes in 1950-51, total fish production of India touched 12.59 million tonnes in 2018-19 with a contribution of 8.90 million tonnes (70.60%) from inland sector. The sunrise fisheries sector contributes about 0.96 % to National Gross Value Added (GVA) and 5.37% to agricultural GVA (2018-19) while engaging over 14.5 million people (2003 census) at the primary level and almost twice the number along the value chain. During 2018-19 the export of marine products that includes production from aquaculture reached 13,77,244 tonnes valued at INR 46589 crore (US $ 6.93 billion). The inland sector grew at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of nearly 6.5% between 1979 and 2018, while overall fish production witnessed 4.5% growth, which is double the growth rate of food grains production in India.

Although the efforts to develop hill agriculture were initiated in early fifties, planned development programme came to be evolved only in the late sixties. The phenomenal increase in food grains called the ‘Green revolution’ bye passed these hilly regions because of paraphernalia of constraints. Furthermore severity of soil erosion and soil degradation is much more and widespread in hill agriculture due to fragile ecosystem and its impact on plains through downstream sedimentation and flooding. Because of these constraints, traditional agriculture cannot be the lead sector for development. Thus the country faces the challenge of promoting livelihoods to minimize migration through local employment and income generation, and to enhance the quality of life of people living in villages. The positive features of these hilly areas are that they are rich in biodiversity, have enormous potential for tourism, a suitable climate for high value crops that can be harnessed for a development strategy.

In order to improve the existing system and to harvest newer opportunities in the hill agricultural system, a proper understanding of the composition of agri-horti-silvi-pastoral farming system and livestock based farming system is necessary. There is a considerable scope for development of agro-ecological zone specific farming along with horticultural interventions in the hill agriculture. At the same time there is an urgent need to give top priority to land use pattern, soil and water conservation and environmental sustainability. Agri tourism can be exploited in hill agriculture. What Hill agriculture needs is the appropriate technology, emerging markets, investment and risk cover.

Introduction

Agriculture is the backbone of India as 50% of its work is engaged in agricultural activities enabling India self-sufficiency in food production. However, agriculture sector is facing several challenges such as reduction in arable land due to urbanization and industrialization, decrease in farm size due to family division, climate change, yield loss due to abiotic and biotic stresses like pest, disease and weed, proliferation of non-genuine/illegal agro-chemicals etc (Murali-Baskaran et al., 2019). FAO estimates that a total annual loss of 20 to 40 percent of global crop production due to pests. Each year, plant diseases cost the global economy around $220 billion, and invasive insects around US$70 billion. While in India, yield loss to crops is estimated as 26, 20, 6 and 8% by insects, plant pathogens, rodents and others, respectively with an annual loss of Rs. 2,25,000 crores annually. Traditionally, ITKs have been practiced by farmers to control pests based on three categories viz., (a) cultural practices, physical, mechanical methods and use of botanicals. Later, IPM has been implemented in various crops to curb such losses caused by biotic stresses. Although cultural, mechanical and biological control strategies are in practice, insecticide application has been the most widely used tactics to reduce such losses to achieve quick control and particularly in case of outbreaks/upsurges. In India 76% of the pesticide used is insecticide, as against 44% globally (Mathur, 1999). First generation insecticides such as sulphur, arsenic, calcium arsenate, copper acetoarsenite, hydrogen cyanide, lead were introduced during 1950’s which are simple, persistent, usually very toxic chemicals used in large scale which harm almost everything they come into contact with. Later second generation insecticide molecules like DDT, chlorinated hydrocarbon, organophosphates, carbamates, and pyrethroids have been introduced with few advantages over first generation molecules. Subsequently, insect growth regulators (IGRs) that mimic insect growth hormones preventing natural young insect moulting which are less harmful to mammals have been introduced. Then, during past decades, newer insecticide molecules have been introduced which are target specific, relatively safe to non-target organisms and low residual activity. In terms of pesticide production and consumption, India is the fourth largest user of pesticides in the world (FAOSTAT, 2017). India is one of the lowest consumer i.e. 0.5 kg/ha (0.06 mt) of pesticides in the world as compared to China (13.06/ha), Japan (11.85 kg/ha), Brazil (4.57 kg/ha) etc. The United Nations has declared 2020 as the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH). The main aim is to raise global awareness on how protecting plant health can help end hunger, reduce poverty, protect the environment, and boost economic development. FAO estimates that up to 40% of food crops are lost due to plant pests and diseases annually. This leaves millions of people without enough food to eat and seriously damages agriculture - the primary source of income for rural poor communities. .

Introduction

India has progressed well on food production from 51 million tonnes (mt) in 1947, 286 mt in 2018-2019 owing to the largest contribution from wheat and rice (about 213 mt). But simultaneously our population has also grown to about 135 billion in 2018. Therefore, the impact of higher production is not realized in absolute terms. Indian agriculture has come a long way since independence achieving food security in major crops, declining rate of rural poverty, rise in agricultural incomes and nutrition levels have gone up. Higher production has also been recorded in sugar, cotton, oilseeds, fruits, vegetables, milk, fisheries and poultry. All this has made us a proud with achieving self-sufficiency in food security. However, on the socio-economic front, the picture does not become rosy as we have a lower strength of socio-economic development indicators even among developing countries. Still the reports of under nourishment, hunger and poverty rings the bell. However, the importance of agriculture cannot be negated because it provides sustenance to mankind, food and employment to all. Considering the emerging challenges of climate change impacting agricultural productivity and increasing variability, poor investment in research, skill development of farmers, post-harvest losses etc. New strategies and innovations in agriculture, particularly on the development of climate resilient varieties with high productivity and better nutritive quality are called for, which has to be led by structural reforms and infrastructural augmentation.

Introduction

Pulses belong to the taxonomic family Fabaceae, containing over 18,000 species divided into the three sub-families Mimosoideae, Caesalpinoideae and Papilionoideae. Pulses are commonly cultivated for several decades in all over the world because of the nutritional value of their seeds. Among different pulses, soybean, chickpea, common bean, cowpea, green gram, black gram and pigeon pea contribute significantly to serve the major protein source for the diets of large numbers of people living in Asia, Africa, and South America.

Production and Productivity of Pulses in india

In India, the production of pulses has not been able to keep pace with their domestic demand, resulting in import of 4-5 million tonnes of pulses per annum, especially from the countries like Canada, Myanmar and Australia to meet its domestic requirement (Kumar et al., 2018). India is the largest producer (around 25% of global production), however it consumes 27% and imports around 14% of its pulses requirements. The yield of pulses in India is quite low at 781 kg/ha which might be due to various factors. Pulse crops does not show any significant increase in area and production during 1950-51 to 2009-10, however, significant growth in area and production has been recorded during the last five years (i.e., 2010-2011 to 2016-17), with the adoption of high yielding varieties, increased usage of agricultural inputs like fertilizers and manures etc. The pulses under irrigation are cultivated in about 37% of the area while 63% of pulses are grown under rainfed conditions.

The productivity of pulses has increased about 77% at 779 kg/ha during 2016-17 from the level of 441 kg/ha during 1950-51. It is imperative to mention that the New Agriculture Technology (NAT) introduced during mid-sixties has increased the production of food-grains from 50.82 million tonnes during 1950-51 to 275.68 million tonnes during 2016-17 with the increase in area from 97.32 million hectares to 128 million hectares. In order to achieve self- sufficiency in pulses, the projected requirement by the year 2025 is estimated at 27.5 MT and to meet this requirement, the productivity needs to be enhanced to 1000 kg/ha.

Introduction

The natural economic movement of a country goes from agrarian economy which is the primary sector to an industrial economy (secondary sector) and then only to the tertiary sector i.e., service economy. But due to various socio-economic factors, India has jumped from an agrarian economy to a service economy in the past and had a low growth in secondary sector.

Though primary sector is vital, there is a natural limit on how much can be extracted from this. The country is witnessing a peak in food grains production (285.21 million tonnes) nonetheless rupees 92,000 crores worth food grains are wasted annually (MOFPI annual report 2018-19). Hence, with an increasing population, decreasing arable land (52.6%), irrigation water resources and with present level of climate change scenario, food processing should be considered as a need to enhance the profitability and sustainability of agriculture in the country (Swaminathan and Bhavani, 2013). Thus, effective post-harvest management is one of the strategies for envisaging an evergreen revolution along with increasing yields. A well-developed food processing industry increases farm gate prices reduce wastages, ensure value addition, promote crop diversification, generate employment opportunities as well as export earnings.

Abstract

Nitrogen is the most important element in terms of nutrition for plants, nitrate being the most preferred form. Nitrate not only acts as nutritional element but also as a signal to modulate metabolism and plant architecture. Nitrate sensing mostly happens in the root tip through a hitherto unknown mechanism, but its response can be demonstrated on an organism-wide scale. Functional genomic studies revealed over a thousand nitrate-responsive genes, involved not only in N and C metabolism, but also in various other physio-logical processes. Identification of nitrate response element/s common to all these genes could pave the way to unravel the mechanism of nitrate signaling, but findings in this direction have remained inconclusive so far. Several trans-acting factors have been implicated in N signaling and response, but none of these have been convincingly demonstrated to be specific to this response. Nitrate uptake, which is sometimes associated with nitrate sensing, is also highly regulated process and involves multiple transport systems like HATS, LATS and dual affinity transporters.

At the point where ammonium is produced, the reactions involved in organic nitrogen mineralization come to a halt. This most reduced form of inorganic nitrogen is the starting point for the nitrification process, which involves the biological synthesis of nitrate or nitrite from reduced nitrogen molecules. The ability of nitrifying bacteria to create nitrate, which is the primary nitrogen source ingested by higher plants, determines their relevance. Nitrate is formed in a variety of places, including soil, marine environments, manure piles, and sewage treatment, where it is the result of the final stage of turning organic nitrogen inoffensive.

The most oxidizable form of nitrogen is nitrate nitrogen (NO3 -N), which is found in minimal amounts in surface waters but can reach considerable concentrations in some aquifers. An essential plant nutrient, nitrate also contributes to eutrophication in receiving water bodies.
Principle
Nitrate reacts with phenol disulphonic acid and produces a nitro-derivative which in alkaline solution develops yellow colour due to rearrangement of its structure. The yellow colour follows Beer’s law and is proportional to the concentration of nitrate present in the sample. Ultraviolet (UV) technique measures the absorbance of nitrate at 220 nm, which is suitable for screening uncontaminated water (low in organic matter). A second measurement made at 275 nm, may be used to correct the nitrate value (because 275 nm is not absorbed by nitrate, but absorbed by other matter). The nitrate calibration curve follows Beer’s law up to 11mg NO3 -N /L.
Reagents
1. Stock nitrate solution (1ml=100 µg NO3 -N): Dry potassium nitrate (KNO3) in an oven at 105 oC for 24 h. Take 360.9 mg potassium nitrate and dissolve in distilled water and dilute to 500 ml. Preserve it with adding 1 ml of chloroform in per 500 ml stock nitrate solution. This solution will stable for at least 6 months.
2. Intermediate nitrate solution (1 ml = 10µg NO3 -N): Take 100 ml of stock nitrate solution and dilute it to 1000 ml of distilled water. This solution can be preserve by adding 2 ml of chloroform per 1000 ml. This Intermediate nitrate solution will stable for at least 6 months.
3. Hydrochloric acid (HCL) solution, 1N: Take 83 ml of hydrochloric acid and dilute it to 1000 ml of distilled water

Nitrite (NO2-) is formed in waters by oxidation of ammonia compounds (by aerobic nitrifying bacteria, e.g. Nitrosomonas) or by reduction of nitrate (by facultative anaerobic denitrifying bacteria, e.g. Pseudomonas). Such oxidation and reduction may occur in wastewater treatment plants, water distribution system, and natural waters. As an intermediate stage in nitrogen cycle, it is unstable. Very high nitrite levels are usually associated with waters having unsatisfactory microbiological activity.
Principle (Colorimetric method)
When nitrite (NO2 -) as nitrous acid (HNO2) mixes with sulfanilamide in an acidic environment (pH 2-2.5), a diazonium salt is created. This salt then combines with N-(1-naphthyl)-ethylenediamine dihydrochloride (NED dihydrochloride) to make a vivid pinkish red azo-dye. The amount of nitrite in the sample directly correlates with the colour that is created. At 543 nm, the colour follows Beer’s law up to 180 µg/L with a 1 cm light path. By diluting a sample, a higher nitrite concentration can be determined. Sulfanilamide + HNO2 + HCl ? Diazonium salt + H2O.

12.1 Introduction-Nitrogen

Nitrogen is a chemical element which has the symbol N and atomic number 7. Elemental nitrogen is a colourless, odourless, tasteless and mostly inert diatomic gas at standard conditions, constituting 78.1% by volume of Earth’s atmosphere. Nitrogen is a constituent element of all living tissues and amino acids. Many industrial important compounds, such as ammonia, nitric acid, and cyanides are made up of nitrogen.

12.1.1 History

Nitrogen (Latin nitrogenium, where nitrum (from Greek nitron) means “native soda”and genes means “forming”) is formally considered to have been discovered by Daniel Rutherford in 1772, who called it noxious air or fixed air. That there is a fraction of air that did not support combustion is well known to the late 18th century.

Argon was discovered when it is noticed that nitrogen from air is not identical to nitrogen from chemical reactions. Compounds of nitrogen were known in the Middle Ages. The alchemists knew nitric acid as aqua fortis (strong water). The mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acids is known as aqua regia (royal water), celebrated for its ability to dissolve gold (the king of metals). The earliest industrial and agricultural applications of nitrogen compounds involved uses in the form of saltpeter (sodium- or potassium nitrate), notably in gunpowder, and much later, as fertilizer, and later still, as a chemical feedstock.

There are two mini-cycles in the soil nitrogen cycle:

1. Soil-based processes such as mineralization, ammonification, nitrification, and immobilisation include the conversion of organic nitrogenous molecules to plant-useable mineral forms, and subsequently back to biomass (microbial, plant and indirectly animal biomass).
2. The process of converting atmospheric nitrogen into forms available to the living components of the ecosystem, i.e. nitrogen fixation and the transformations within the soil, as well as the return of the fixed nitrogen to atmospheric inert forms of nitrogen through denitrification, are all soil and biosphere resident processes.

Soil microorganisms are the most important agents in the cycling or transformation of various elements (N, P, K, S, Fe etc.) in the biosphere; where the essential elements undergo cyclic alterations between the inorganic state as free elements in nature and the combined state in living organisms. Life on earth is dependent on the cycling of nutrient elements from their elemental states to inorganic compounds to organic compounds and back into their elemental states.

The microbes through the process of biochemical reactions convert / breakdown complex organic compounds into simple inorganic compounds and finally into their constituent elements. This process is known as “Mineralization”.

Mineralization of organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulphur, and iron by soil microorganisms makes these elements available for reuse by plants. In the following paragraphs the cycling or transformations of some of the important elements are discussed.

To meet the food needs of the burgeoning population, India will need to produce 300 million tonnes of food grains by 2020. At present more than 75% of the total food grains produced in the country are of rice and wheat. Use of nitrogenous fertilizers has contributed much to the remarkable increase in production of rice and wheat in India that has occurred during the past three decades. During the last half-decade or so while fertilizer N consumption is touching new heights, the production of both rice and wheat is showing a trend of plateauing. In fact, fertilizer N efficiency of food grain production expressed as partial factor productivity of N (PFPN) has been decreasing exponentially since 1965. The PFPN is an aggregate efficiency index that includes contributions to crop yield derived from uptake of indigenous soil N. fertilizer N uptake efficiency, and the efficiency with which N acquired by the plant is converted to grain yield. A decrease in PFPN occurs as farmers move yields higher along a fixed N response function, unless other factors shift the response function up. In other words, an initial decline in PFPN is an expected consequence of the adoption of N fertilizers by farmers and not necessarily bad within a system’s context

Under agricultural conditions, the nitrogen removed is usually greater than the nitrogen input. To maintain fertility, nitrogen must be returned to the soil. This takes place mainly by biological nitrogen fixation, which is responsible for the major reduction of dinitrogen to ammonia that is used by the plants. Biological nitrogen fixation accounts for most of the fixation of atmospheric nitrogen in to Ammonium, thus representing the key entry point of molecular nitrogen into the biogeochemical cycle of nitrogen (Fig.4.1). Some bacteria can convert atmospheric nitrogen into ammonium. Most of this nitrogen fixing prokaryote is free living in the soil.

Nitrogen is the most important element on which depends growth and productivity of plants. It is also the most abundant molecule in the atmosphere (80%), yet it cannot be utilized by plants. The plant utilizable form of nitrogen is either, its most oxidized form, the nitrates or the most reduced state, the ammonia.  The indiscriminate use of nitrogenous fertilizers amounts to depletion of non-renewable fossil fuels used in fertilizer production. Sustainable agriculture depends largely on renewable resources and on-farm nitrogen contributions are achieved largely through biological nitrogen fixation (BNF), which helps in maintaining and/or improving soil fertility by using atmospheric nitrogen. Annually BNF is estimated to be around 175 million tonnes of which close to 79% is accounted for by terrestrial fixation.

21.1 Determination of Total Nitrogen in Soil (Modified Kjeldahl Method)

Nitrogen mostly present in soil in organic form. Relatively small amount of nitrogen usually occurs in ammonium and nitrate form, the available form. The Kjeldahl method of total N determination includes both organic and ammonium forms and with modification nitrate form of N can also be included.

Principle

When soil is digested with concentrated sulphuric acid organic nitrogen is converted to ammonium sulphate. To speed up the reaction a digestion mixture composed of sodium (or potassium) sulphate (to raise the boiling point of H₂SO₄) and cupric sulphate (CuSO₄) - selenium powder (catalyst) is used.

Abstract

Nitrogen is the most limiting nutrient controlling production of all agricultural systems. Application of N fertilizer has increased food production tremendously all over the world. However, it also contributes towards global warming and ozone layer depletion through emission of nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas (GHG). Therefore, there is a need to assess the possibilities of N management for climate change abatement and food security enhancement, while minimizing environmental and human health impacts. In this chapter, role of gaseous-N emission on N use and various mitigation options for Indian agriculture have been discussed. For the base year 2007, the direct and indirect N₂O emissions from Indian agricultural soils was estimated to be 136.29 Gg (35.3 Tg CO₂ equivalent) and 30.61 Gg (5.8 Tg CO₂ equivalent), respectively.

Abstract

The abiotic stresses viz. drought, high temperature, water stress, salinity, heavy metal contaminations etc. cause variable effect on nitrogen (N) mineralization, its uptake and transport, assimilation and remobilization, and subsequently the growth and productivity of plants. The affect is generally negative, however, the magnitude of decrease in various processes is dependent on genotype, age of the plant, tissue under investigation, type and extent of the stress and other agro-climatic conditions. Biological nitrogen fixation and nitrate assimilation appear to be more sensitive than the ammonium assimilation possibly because re-assimilation of ammonia released in the tissue due to catabolism of N molecules is essential for the survival of plants. In addition, synthesis of stress metabolites (proline, glycine betaine and poly amines) is directly dependent on the availability of primary amino acid, glutamic acid. There are few well coordinated and detailed studies, determining the key factors involved in regulating NUE under abiotic stresses.

Abstract

Nitrogen is an important nutrient for growth and development of plants. Presence or absence of nitrogen often affects the amino acid composition of proteins, which may in turn change its nutritional quality. Increase in the elevated CO₂ concentration and temperature associated with future climates are expected to affect the nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), growth and grain yield of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Atmospheric CO₂ is steadily rising from the current level of approx 384 µLL^-1 and is expected to rises upto 550 µLL^-1 by 2050. It is predicted that the global temperature would increase by 1.5- 4.5^oC. The main future challenge is to feed nine billion people under an altered climate, as this increase in global temperature would affect, negatively or positively the future crop productivity including wheat depending upon the geographical location. The present book chapter summarizes the potential impact of elevated CO₂ and temperature on NUE of Triticum aestivum L.

Greek scientist Theophrastus (300 BC) advocated legume rotation. As early as 1750 AD it was known that plants require Nitre. Louis Pasteure in 1860 AD stated the possibility of atmospheric nitrogen fixation by microorganisms. Hellriegel and Willfarth (1886) strengthened the views of Louis Pasteure by his observations on the irratic behaviour of legumes to nitrate nutrition. Beizerink (1890) isolated the organism involved in nitrogen fixation. The systematic field experiments conducted at Rothemstead experimental station showed that the plants respond to inorganic nitrogen.

ROLES OF NITROGEN IN CROPS

Plants contain 1-5 per cent nitrogen by weight. It is a structural component of chlorophyll, aminoacids and proteins. Plant proteins contain 16 per cent nitrogen (6.25 × %N = protein). Plants are dependent on protein for their propagation. Cereals possess a threshold protein level below which grain will not form.
