The oceans cover 71% of the earth’s surface and it acts a natural collector and store of solar energy. On an average day, 60 million sq. km. of tropical seas absorb an amount of solar radiation equivalent in heat content to about 245 billion barrels of oil, if this energy could be trapped, large scale renewable source becomes available especially for tropical countries. The energy available in the ocean is clean, continuous throughout the year and renewable.

Renewable energy contribution to the available energy resources is very important to the country as it is presently facing an energy resources crunch. Out of the total installed capacity of approximately 370.106 GW as on March 2020, Renewable Power Plants including hydro-electric plant contribute 35.86 % of total installed capacity. However, with the present increase in demand, more attention is required to extract the renewable sources so that at least 50 to 60 % share for the total energy requirement by the renewable energy sources.

There are various forms of ocean energy such as Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC), Wave Energy, Tidal Energy, Salinity Gradient Energy, Offshore Wind Energy, Marine Currents, Marine Biomass Conversion. Among these, the first three forms are likely to be technically viable for the future.

More recently Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India hasdeclared Ocean Energy as renewable energy, and clarified to all the stakeholders that energy produced using various forms of ocean energy such as tidal, wave, ocean thermal energy conversion among others shall be considered as renewable energy.

MNRE reported that, the total identified potential of tidal energy is about 8000 - 9000 MW, with about 7000 MW in the Gulf of Cambay in Gujarat, about 1200 MW in Gulf of Kutch and less than 100 MW in Sundarbans. Primary estimates of wave energy potential along Indian coast are about 5 – 15 MW/m, so that theoretical estimates are around 40 – 60 GW. Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) has a theoretical potential of 180,000 MW in India subject to suitable technological evolution. As of date, there is not any installed Ocean Energy capacity in India.

11.1 Introduction

More than 70% of Earth’s surface is covered by the ocean, the world’s largest solar energy collector and storage system. By utilizing only a small portion of this energy, we can meet all the energy needs around the world. As long as the sun shines and there are natural ocean currents, Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) energy source is free, abundant, and continually replenished. It is estimated that 3 to 5 terawatts (1 terawatt is 1012 watts) of baseload power generation can be practically harvested without affecting ocean temperatures or the environment of the planet. this is about the twice the global demand for electricity. Oceans are therefore an abundant renewable resource, offering a sustainable method for the production of electricity in the future.

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.), a tropical perennial tree native to West Africa, is the most productive oilseed crop for biodiesel, yielding up to 5 tons of oil per hectare (Mekhilef et al., 2011). Indonesia and Malaysia are the largest global producers, accounting for over 85% of the world’s palm oil (Atabani et al., 2012). Palm oil is extracted from the fruit of the oil palm and is widely used in both food and fuel applications. However, its cultivation has raised environmental concerns, including deforestation, habitat loss, and carbon emissions (Gui et al., 2008). Efforts are being made to promote sustainable palm oil production to mitigate these impacts (Mekhilef et al., 2011). Deforestation, habitat loss, and carbon emissions are only a few of the serious environmental issues brought on by its cultivation (Fargione et al., 2008). Oil palm plantation growth has been connected to a decline in biodiversity, especially in tropical rainforests that are home to endangered species like Sumatran tigers and orangutans (Fitzherbert et al., 2008). According to Carlson et al. (2013), the conversion of peatlands for the production of oil palm contributes to climate change by increasing greenhouse gas emissions.
History of Oil Palm as Biodiesel Feedstock
Oil palm has been used for cooking and lighting for thousands of years in Africa and Southeast Asia (Obahiagbon, 2012). Research into its use as a biodiesel feedstock began in the 1980s, with Malaysia pioneering biodiesel development (Zainal et al.,2017).
• 1982: The Palm Oil Research Institute of Malaysia (PORIM) successfully tested palm oil-based biodiesel in diesel engines (Yusoff, 2006).
• Early 2000s: Commercial production expanded in Indonesia and Malaysia, driven by government policies and renewable fuel demand (Mekhilef, 2011).
• Sustainability challenges have led to the establishment of certification schemes such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) (Ruysschaert & Salles, 2014).

14.1 Introduction

An oil spill (or slick) is the intentional or unintentional release of oil into the natural environment as a result of human activity. The term often refers to marine oil spills where oil is released into the ocean or coastal waters (Fig. 14.1).

Oil can refer to many different materials, including crude oil, refined petroleum products or by-products, oily refuse, oil mixed in waste, or oily ballast. Oil is also released into the environment from natural geologic seeps on the seafloor, as along the coastline. The fate, behavior, and environmental effects of spilled oil can vary depending upon the type and amount of material spilled. In general, lighter refined petroleum products such as diesel and gasoline are more likely to mix in the water column and are more toxic to marine life, but tend to evaporate relatively quickly and do not persist long in the environment. Heavier crude or fuel oil, while of less immediate toxicity, can remain on the water surface or stranded on the shoreline for much longer. Oil from the Exxon Valdez and Gulf War oil spills, while weathering over time, has persisted along the shoreline for years after the spill.

11.1 General

With the global population growing and concerns about climate change increasing, it is crucial to move away from finite fossil fuels and towards renewable alternatives. This involves extracting valuable oils from various sources and using them to create renewable and eco friendly fuel. Oil-based biomass processing is a dynamic intersection where innovation meets necessity, combining chemistry, engineering, sustainability, and environmental consciousness. It is an intricate and multifaceted endeavor requiring careful attention to detail and a collaborative effort to succeed.

Five major oilseeds are groundnut, sesamum, Rapseseed and Mustard, linseed and castor seed. India has the largest area and production of oilseeds in the world. Indian vegetable oil economy is the fourth largest in the world next to USA, China and Brazil.

Importance

• Oilseeds are sources of oil, protein, carbohydrates, vitamins like Vitamin A, D, E and K and also contain 18 essential aminoacids and trace elements.

Furthermore this paper explores to discuss the innovation processes, technologies which help in conserving existing diversity, process of evolving newer lines that eventually meet the needs of the farems. Open Source Seed Network (OSSN) would be an organisational platform which consists people engaged in conservation, farmers that can develop Value for Cultivation and Use data for the existing crop varieties in different agro- climatic growing conditions using participatory varietal selection. Farmer breeders engaged in selection and development of newer varieties and Farmers institutions involved in production and marketing of seed to other farmers. Further to elaborate the process the stakeholders will perform the responsibility of conservation and revival of the existing varieties, PVS for generating VCU data, PPB, perform Maintenance Breeding, maintain community seed banks, seed production and marketing. In addition we attempts to focus on mechanisms while making public sector as partners in participatory plant breeding which enable development of locally suitable varieties. An access and benefit sharing mechanism based on an open source model rather than on exclusive rights based is planned for free exchange of germplam within the purview of General Public License for plant Germplasm (GPLGP). This paper emphasise advantages of GPL that prevents exclusive rights, bio piracy, safeguarding farmer derived genetic resources, develop legal/institutional framework that eventually allows farmers to freely exchange, save, improve and sell seeds. In the end this could trigger the emergence of an institutional framework in which farmers and plant scientists work together in plant improvement that contribute to a sustainable food system.

Open-source models typically provide access to model architectures, weights and development tools, enabling researchers and organizations to inspect, modify, fine-tune and deploy models for specialized applications. Their community-driven nature can accelerate innovation and reduce barriers to experimentation. Proprietary models, in contrast, generally provide controlled access through commercial APIs or platforms and may offer optimized infrastructure, enterprise support, security mechanisms and large-scale deployment capabilities. The chapter compares the two approaches in terms of transparency, customization, licensing, scalability, accessibility, security, cost, accountability and innovation potential. For instance, understanding the onset and duration of the monsoon season in regions like India is crucial for planning planting and harvesting schedules for crops such as rice, wheat, and soybeans. Similarly, in regions with Mediterranean climates, knowing the likelihood and timing of frost events can help farmers protect sensitive crops like citrus and avocados. The concepts and components of operational agricultural meteorology (OAM) are diverse and multifaceted, encompassing a range of topics. Agrometeorological modeling, for example, involves using computer simulations to predict how weather and climate conditions will impact crop growth and development. The Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP) is a notable example of this, where multiple models are compared and improved to better predict the impacts of climate change on agricultural production. Crop weather modeling is another key component, focusing on the specific interactions between weather patterns and the growth stages of various crops.

Abstract

The known views in society about the biotech foods were collected and structured in statements. An opinion survey of sixty scientists of CCS Haryana Agricultural University on these statements was conducted. Half of the scientists agreed that there were no biotech food products in our country. Biotech foods were considered safe for human consumption by 61.7% of the respondents. A large majority of the scientists considered that biotech foods were different in taste from foods made from conventional crops. Similarly 65% of scientists had the opinion that biotech crops increase food allergies. Fifty percent of the scientists agreed that biotech foods were regulated and tested. The rest opined that labeling is needed for biotech foods even in USA. Overwhelming majority felt that biotech foods were not widely accepted. Meat, milk and egg products from biotech animals were not concieved as unsafe to eat by 43.3% respondents. Equal number of scientists felt the same about foods produced through biotechnology and viewed that these were not tested for health.

Converting the agricultural waste from trash to treasure is very challenging issue for the researchers/scientists. The practice of indiscriminate dumping and burning crop residue poses serious human and environmental health risks and threatens food and energy security (Singh and Chauhan, 2022). Addressing crop residue burning requires strong technological interventions and policy support due to factors like labour scarcity, lack of appropriate technology and most important the short window of 15-20 days between harvesting and the next crop sowing. On-field burning not only degrades the environment but also leads to the loss of valuable nutrient content in crop residue. Agri-waste burning constitutes approximately 25% of total agri-biomass production globally, underscoring the urgent need to find economically viable alternatives to mitigate this issue and curb outdoor degradation. The scientific community is increasingly focusing on valorizing lignocellulosic-based agricultural waste for biofuel generation and industrial enzyme production. Given the pressing concerns regarding energy use and environmental degradation, there is a growing imperative to transition from non-renewable to renewable energy sources. Renewable energy has the potential to satisfy a significant portion of global energy demand by 2050. Leveraging lignocellulosic waste from agricultural systems is crucial for renewable energy generation and environmental sustainability. Agri-waste, composed mainly of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, boasts high energy conversion efficiency compared to fossil fuel-based technologies. Effective agri-waste management techniques can address energy security and greenhouse gas emissions issues (Varjani et al., 2022). The sheer volume of agricultural residue globally, equivalent to around 50 billion tons of oil, highlights the substantial potential of agricultural biomass for energy production. Similarly, composting agri-waste offers an eco-friendly alternative to energy-intensive inorganic fertilizers, promoting sustainable agricultural crop production. Retaining or incorporating agri-waste into soil can enhance soil fertility and crop productivity (Yadav et al., 2019). Moreover, due to its diverse biochemical composition, agri-waste holds promise for various industrial applications.

The term “organic farming” refers to a production technique that excludes the use of artificially formulated fertilizers, pesticides, or growth regulators for agronomic practices or the use of different chemicals for livestock production, i.e., feed additives, growth promoters and antibiotics, etc. (M. Singh 2021).

The terms such as organic, natural, biological, biodynamic, altemative and sustainable farming have entered the agriculture vocabulary. Inspite of these differences in terminology, basically identical ideologies, ideas and technologies are reflected. The common objectives of all the system are to develop farming methods to restore, maintain or build-up soil productivity, to protect the environment instead of causing pollution, produce safe and healthy food, and preserve or help the small farmer.

In Japan, the farmers study the nature, learn from it and apply the knowledge on their farms. For instances growing plots should also be mulched with straw or plant residues, this imitates the conditions in natural forest where ground is never bare. Instead of using pesticides, strong herbs or plants can be grown around vegetable plots to ward off the insects. To keep the soil health natural, organic fertilizers are used. Soil microorganisms and earthworms take care of the processes involved in decomposition and mineralization of the organic substances, fix atmospheric nitrogen, solubilise insoluble forms of phosphate and produce natural growth promoting substances and antibiotics,

The concept of sustainable agriculture is gaining acceptance and momentum because of rapid degradation of natural resources, increase in the cost of production in conventional agriculture system and deterioration in the quality of rural life caused by environmental pollution. Moreover it is risky and uneconomical to practise conventional agriculture in over 70 percent of the cultivated area in India which is presently under rainfed farming. Much of the know how to practice organic farming models has rested on the individual farmers till now. They however do not have the benefit of appropriate technology and scientific information and also institutional support to ensure success of the new farming system.

Agricultural sector, with the technological advancements, is also contributing to global climate change, loss of biodiversity and degradation of resources. Further, there is a serious global concern about chemical residues, healthy food and healthy planet earth. Organic and natural farming are acclaimed to be the best alternative non-chemical production pathways to reverse the ill effects of modern agriculture. However, these systems are not contemplated to meet the food security and other requirements of ever-growing human population, particularly in developing countries. In this chapter, based on the available and documented protocols and production practices of these systems, the additional research, extension and policy needs to strengthen these production pathways to attain economic, ecological and social sustainability are discussed while considering the Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDGs) of United Nations.

In general, any business directly involved in food production can be certified, including seed suppliers, farmers, food processors, retailers and restaurants. Requirements vary from country to country, and generally involve a set of production standards for growing, storage, processing, packaging and shipping organic certification ensures:

• Avoidance of synthetic chemical inputs (e.g. Fertilizer, pesticides, antibiotics, food additives, etc) and genetically modified organisms;
• Use of farmland that has been free from chemicals for a number of years (often, three or more);
• Keeping detailed written production and sales records (audit trail);
• Maintaining strict physical separation of organic products from non-certified products and
• Undergoing periodical on-site inspections.

In some countries, certification is overseen by the government, and commercial use of the term organic is legally restricted. Certified organic producers are also subject to the same agricultural, food safety and other government regulations that apply to non-certified producers.

Organic food sales increased steadily from the late 20th century. Greater environmental awareness, coupled with concerns over the health impacts of pesticide residues and consumption of genetically modified (GMO) crops, fostered the growth of the organic sector. Realizing the benefits of organic food, especially after COVID-19, consumers are also demanding organically grown food and fiber and are willing to pay premium price. But to tap the market, there is an inevitable need for certification. Recently launched Food Safety and Standards (Organic Food) Regulation, 2017 mandates that all food products sold as organic must be certified and comply the basic requirements of the Act. The organic food offered or promoted for sale shall also comply with all the applicable provisions of either National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) or Participatory Guarantee System for India (PGS India). Organic certification is a process certification. The requirement to confirm that the product is organic include labelling on the package and traceability for both domestic and export needs to be understood. For import and export of organic produce, transaction certificate issued by an Accredited Certification Body is required. These requirements are essential for fresh and processed food items. In this chapter, we tried to eloborate the process and procedures for organic certification.

In India, there are two accreditation systems for authorizing Certification and Inspection agencies for organic certification. National Programme on organic Production (NPOP) promoted by Ministry of Commerce is the core programme which governs and defines the standards and implementing procedures. National Accreditation Body (NAB) is the apex decision making body. Certification and Inspection agencies accredited by NAB are authorized to undertake certification process. The NPOP notified under FTDR act and controlled by Agricultural Processed Foods Export Development Authority (APEDA) looks after the requirement of export while NPOP notified under APGMC act and controlled by Agriculture Marketing Advisor, Directorate of Marketing and Inspection looks after domestic certification. Currently 20 certification agencies have been authorized to undertake certification process.

National Programme on Organic Production

National Program on Organic Production (NPOP) was launched during 2001 under the Foreign Trade & Development Act (FTDR Act). The document provides information on standards for organic production, systems criteria, and procedures for accreditation of Inspection and Certification bodies, the national organic logo and the regulations governing its use.

The organic constituents of soils or soil organic matter is the most essential components of soil consisting of plant and animal residues at various stages of decomposition, cells and tissues of living or nonliving organisms and the substances synthesized by their decomposition. Soil organic matter exerts profound effect on soil productivity as it acts as source and sink of plant nutrients especially nitrogen and sulphur. It also involves in major biochemical processes to transform or release of plant nutrients into their available forms. Thus, it plays vital role in soil fertility maintenance, through increasing cation exchange capacity and improving soil physical properties, such as bulk density, aggregation, water retention capacity and also supports all kinds of biological activities in soil. The soil organic matter mostly concerns only with dead organic fractions formed from the decomposition of original plant and animal residues using as a source of food and energy by the soil microorganisms. Organic farming is a crop production method respecting the rules of the nature, targeted to produce nutritive, healthy and pollution free food. It maximizes the use of on -farm resources and minimizes the use of off – farm inputs.

The general guidelines on organic production of crops are prepared based on National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) launched by Government of India. These guidelines enable the growers to attain more or less the same level of the productivity of conventional farming within a few years and at the same time maintain the fertility of the soil and protect the ecological balance.

From an ecological perspective all organisms are part of nature, irrespective of what they do. To a farmer, all organisms that reduce the yields of their crops are considered pests, diseases or weeds. Insects, birds or other animals are also pests whenever they cause damage to crops or stored produce. Fungi, bacteria and viruses are also recognized as disease causing organisms when they lead to conditions that interrupt or modify the vital functions of growing plants or stored produce. All unwanted plants that grow within crops and compete with them for nutrients, water and sunlight are considered weeds. Such plants can also be hosts for pests and diseases.Presence of these organisms in crop fields is not a problem until their numbers increase beyond a level where they attack, and cause substantial reductionin field crop yields or quality of harvested and stored produce.

The organic approach to plant pest, plant disease and weed management makes reference to the four principles of organic agriculture: the principle of health, the principle of ecology, the principle of fairness, and the principle of care. Generally, organic farmers aim at sustaining and enhancing the health of their soils, plants, animals, humankind and—in the widest sense—the planet. The health of individuals and communities cannot be separated fromthe health of ecosystems. Therefore, by providing healthy soils and a diversified natural environment, farmers are able to produce healthy crops that foster the health of animals and people.

Healthy plants are also able to resist and tolerate physiological disruption and damage from disease-causing organisms and pests. Thus, organic farmers aim at optimizing the growing conditions for their crops to make them strong and competitive. At the same time they encourage natural control mechanisms to prevent pests, diseases and weeds to develop in a way that they cannot damage the crops. They, therefore, give priority to preventive measures to prevent and limit the spread of infections, instead of relying on direct control measures. Direct control measures are mainly applied when pathogens have already developed.

In India, Mahatma Gandhi known as father of the Nation, deserves for imparting credit as pioneer for organic agriculture by way of promoting farmyard manure, compost and advocating use of night soil to enhance the soil fertility and thereby, crop productivity. Organic agriculture possesses lot of advantages over conventional agriculture, especially in areas having low rainfall and showing low soil fertility (Yadav, 2010). Although APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) as an apex body which is working to promote the export of organic food commodities. However, lack of adequate certification facilities and the trainings organized, markets for organic foods inadequate, political and scientific will power are some of the hindrances for operating organic agriculture in India. As human and natural resources are readily available in our country, so there is good scope for organic agriculture farming including organic animal husbandry by adopting proper organic agriculture policies.

Organic farming in India started receiving focused attention from the year 2004-2005 when National Project on Organic farming (NPOF) was launched during 2004, the area under organic farming was 42,000 hectares (Srimathi and Jency, 2014). By March, 2010, it was reached to 1.08 million hectares. In addition to these, 3.40 million hectares was wild forest harvest collection area. Thus, total area under organic certification process by March,2010 was 4.48 million hectares which was increased by 25 folds during last 6 years. In cultivated organic land 7.56 lakh hectares was certified while 3.2 lakh hectares was under conversion. In India, States such as Orissa, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand (Uttaranchal), Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have been categorized as low or negligible fertilizers consuming states of the country.

The Indian literature viz; Vedas and other related books show that ancient Indians used to impart great significance to the gardens and parks. Indian rulers especially, the kings, the princess vis-a-vis affluent people took special interest in making vegetable gardens in the houses and fruit tree gardens in open areas. In those days, it was considered to be the foremost duty of a king to maintain the beautiful gardens in the city and around his palace. It is even said that only he should be revered as an ideal king whose abode is provided with spacious gardens having full of fruit bearing trees (Krishna murthy 2012). As a matter of fact, the gardens also contained pools and tanks adorned with beautiful lotus blossoms, having a number of plants and bushes laden with large number of fragrant flowers etc. Kautilya has included gardens and fields under the term of “Vastu”. So Vastu Sastra or the science of habitation may be taken to stand for laying out of gardens etc; including both horticulture and agriculture.

Organic farm produce is now gaining momentum in the world. People of high status and concerned with health hazards are interested in organic product. Since 1990, the market of organic product has grown reaching a value of Rs 55 billion in 2009 as per the Organic Monitor in the world. The demand has been reflected in increase of land under organic farming which has grown correspondingly at a rate of 8.9% per annum. At present there is approximately 37,000,000 hectare of land under organic farming worldwide. The idea has been percolated to rural areas and the farmers of all kinds are aware of organic farming. In terms of organic land, Australia leads the pack with 11.3 million hectares followed by Argentina (2.8 million hectares) and Italy with more than one million hectares. In Asia, China, India and Japan are the largest organic producers. Japan is the region’s largest market and buys majority of Asia’s production.

All definitions of sustainable agriculture lay great emphasis on maintaining an agriculture growth rate, which can meet the demand for food of all living things without draining the basic resources. Over time, the International Alliance for sustainable agriculture and an increasing number of researchers, farmers, policy-makers and organizations worldwide have developed a definition that unifies many diverse elements into a widely adopted, comprehensive, working definition

Organic farming in groundnut cultivation is gaining global recognition as an environmentally sustainable and socially responsible approach. Groundnut is a versatile crop with high nutritional value and economic importance. This chapter explores the principles and practices involved in organic groundnut farming. It focussed on soil management, organic fertilization, pest, disease and weed management without using synthetic chemicals. This approach minimizes impact on the environment and reduces the presence of pesticide residues in the final produce. Moreover, organic practices help maintain soil health, conserve biodiversity and reduce environmental pollution. Thus, farmers can produce high quality groundnuts and fetch higher price and profits.

1. Introduction

The groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is known by different names such as monkey nut, goober, earth nut etc., and belongs to leguminosae family. It produces flowers above ground but the fruits/pods underground (Sanders, 2003). It can be grown successfully in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. Globally, groundnut covers 32.7 M ha with a production of 53.9 MT with a productivity of 1648 kg ha-1 (FAOSTAT, 2021). Among the developing countries, Egypt has the highest productivity of groundnut with 2.70 t ha-1 (Nautiyal, 2001). Globally, India ranks first in groundnut area (5.42 m-ha) and is the second largest producer in the world with 10.1 MT with a productivity of 1863 ha-1 in 2021-22 (agricoop.nic.in). India ranks second next to China (34%) with 19% of world groundnut production in 2021. Gujarat is the largest producer contributing 36% of the total production of groundnut followed by Rajasthan (17%) and Tamil Nadu (7.5%). Groundnut accounts for 18% area and 26.8% production of the total oilseeds in India (CARP, 2022).

Organic farming is the form of agriculture that relies on techniques such as crop rotation, green manure, compost and biological pest control. Organic farming uses fertilizers and pesticides but excludes or strictly limits the use of manufactured (synthetic) fertilizers, pesticides (which include herbicides, insecticides and fungicides), plant growth regulators such as hormones, livestock antibiotics, food additives, genetically modified organisms, human sewage sludge, and nano materials.

There is a need to look for new means to check this menace. Chemical fertilizers are necessary to feed the ever increasing population of the nation but this needs to be supplemented with the organic manures. But organic manures are not available in sufficient quantity. Besides, they alone cannot meet the nutritional requirement of the crops and have to be applied alongwith the chemical fertilizers. Experimental results have shown that if organic fertilizers are applied then chemical use can be brought down to half. This will lead to favourable impact on the soil ecology besides saving large amounts that are being pumped to subsidize the chemical fertilizers.

Organic agriculture is picking up in some parts of our nation and it can generate viable farming option to small and marginal farmers. But short supply of the organic inputs is emerging as one of the major bottlenecks. Vermicomposting of city wastes and farm wastes can generate substantial volume of the organic fertilizer for use in our fields, thereby, helping us to overcome major hurdle in taking up organic agriculture production. This chapter attempts to identify the find out the ways and benefits of practicing organic farming and determines the economics of Vermicomposting technology.

The North Eastern Hill Region is the most suitable area of India for organic agricultural farming because of its numerous advantages. This region is said to be, by and large, organic by default or the farmers of this region are de facto organic producers. Truly, the farmers of this region are using very minimal or not even minimal amount of inorganic inputs like fertilizer and pesticides. Almost in all the seven states of this region, farmers are practicing traditional agriculture for thousands of years. Recently, only pockets of the region, the use of inorganic inputs have been started but the level of use is almost negligible. This low chemical input use (inorganic input) is the biggest strength in term of the possibility of organic agriculture in this hilly region. The conversion period of organic from inorganic agriculture will be much lower and easier in this region as compared to other parts of the country. Further, the conversion process will be much easier due to the readily available huge amount of forest biomass and the residues of diverse livestock population. Moreover, experimental results show that during the transition period, the farmers face the problem of yield losses, but in NE India it was observed that yield loss was minimum, sometimes nil, because farmers of this region are using very low level of inorganic inputs. Additionally, the organic products usually fetch higher prices, nearly 20-25 per cent premium as compared to the conventional products, which, may compensate the problem of yield losses during early period of conversion and thereby increase the level of income.

North-Eastern Hill Region is suitable for growing a number of high value crops and following good agricultural practices for cultivation of these crops are likely to increase farm income substantially. Enabling the state to follow systematic organic farm practices is likely to make the farming profession more remunerative. Present socio economic study indicated that the organic farm practices might be quite favourable particularly for few crops like pineapple, turmeric, ginger and cashew, which have readymade potential.

Historical Perspective

Organic Farming was initiated in about 10,000 years back when ancient farmers started cultivation depending on natural sources only. There is a brief mention of several organic inputs in our ancient literature like Rigveda, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Kautilya Arthashastra etc. In fact, organic agriculture has its roots in traditional agricultural practices that evolved in countless villages and farming communities over the millennium.

Organic Movement

The organic movement began in the 1930s and 1940s as a reaction to agriculture’s growing reliance on synthetic fertilizers. Artificial fertilizers had been created during the 18th century, initially with superphosphates and then ammonia derived fertilizers mass-produced using the Haber-Bosch process developed during World War I. These early fertilizers were cheap, powerful, and easy to transport in bulk. The 1940s has been referred to as the ‘pesticide era’. Sir Albert Howard is widely considered to be the father of organic farming. Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian philosopher, made important strides in the earliest organic theory with his biodynamic agriculture. More work was done by J.I. Rodale in the United States, Lady Eve Balfour in the United Kingdom, and many others across the world. As a percentage of total agricultural output, organic farming has remained tiny since its beginning. As environmental awareness and concern increased, the originally supply-driven movement became demand driven. Standardized certification brought premium prices, and in some cases government subsidies attracted many farmers converting into organic farming. In the developing world, many farmers started organic farming according to traditional methods but are not certified. In other cases, farmers in the developing world have converted out of necessity. As a proportion of total global agricultural output, organic output remains small, but it has been growing rapidly in many countries, notably in Europe.

Organic farming primarily aimed at cultivating the land and raising crops in such a way so as to keep the soil alive and in good health by use of organic wastes and beneficial microbes. Organic farming is performed with an intension for maintaining diversity of crops, keeping soil healthy for future years, producing high quality products and recycling nutrients. Unlike modern agriculture, organic farming is not depended on synthetic chemicals. Instead, it depends on natural products to boost soil fertility through microbial activity. Organic farming uses a multiple cropping system, which benefits from growing several crops. This crop diversity supports a range of plants, insects, soil micro-organisms and animals that add to a healthy farming system. Organic farmings are of different types such as bio-farming, nature farming, eco-farming and biodynamic farming. Organic agriculture is developed with concented efforts by various people to create the symbiotic relationship between the nature and man. In the present day, organic agriculture has shown potentiality in commercial, social and environmental sector.

Organic farming is a production management system, which promotes agro-ecosystem and agrobiodiversity. The objective of organic farming is to generate all the required plant nutrients inside the farm and adopt crop protection using local resources. Organic farming emphasizes on the use of farm yard manure, crop residues, composts, vermi-compost and bio-fertilizers to enrich soil fertility and use of bio-control measures to manage insect and diseases. In particular, organic agriculture is intended to produce high quality, nutritious food which helps in preventive health care. Organic farming increases biodiversity at every level i.e. from micro-organism to mammals. It strengthens biodiversity by using bio-pesticides and inorganic fertilizers.

Globally, organic oilseeds constitute an important element in organic production. Their products are important feedstuffs (oilcake) and also relevant for human consumption (soya products, oils), and demand for these is continually growing. Almost half of the global organic oilseed area is occupied by soybeans, and another almost 20% is for sunflower seeds and sesame. Rape and turnip rape constitute about 6% of the organic oilseed area. Oilseeds are of pivotal significance in the Indian agricultural economy supporting income of millions of farmers practicing mainly rainfed cultivation. Nine annual oilseed crops are cultivated in India that includes groundnut, rapeseed-mustard, soybean, sunflower, sesame, niger and safflower that are edible and non-edible oilseed crops include castor and linseed. Organic agriculture is one among the broad spectrum of production methods that are supportive of the environment. The principal method of organic farming includes crop rotation, green manures and composts, biological pest control and reduced tillage. The performance of annual edible oilseed crops and development of package in relation to organic management for sustainable agriculture are discussed in this chapter.

India, the 4th largest vegetable oil economy in the world, stands first in the production of castor, sesame, safflower, and niger oils, whereas second in groundnut, third in rapeseed mustard, fourth in linseed and fifth in soybean oil. About 14 million farmers are engaged in oilseeds production and another million in their processing. Whereas, the perennial edible oil seed crops include oil palm and coconut. Edible oils are also produced domestically from secondary sources such as rice bran, cotton seed, corn, and other tree-borne oilseeds (TBOs), besides some minor oil producing species of forest origin.

During the last decade organic agriculture has emerged as a dynamic alternate farming system. This has been necessitated as a consequence of resource degradation because of to achieving high yields in various crops to meet the increasing demand of food by the burgeoning population. These have resulted in change in soil structure, imbalance in soil micro-organisms and organic matter, resistance among various weeds to weedicides, increased salinity, sodicity and have affected the water holding capacity of the soil and brought in health and environmental problems. Organic farming is a specified form of diversified agriculture that not only aims to produce nutritious food of high quality but also lead to the generation of more income and employment opportunities for rural population. In true sense, organic farming is a production system which avoids or largely excludes the use of synthetic fertilizers, growth regulators, livestock feed additives and pesticides. Moreover, it relies on agronomic management practices like crop rotation, crop residues, animal manures, legumes, green manures, off-farming organic wastes and aspect of biological pest control to maintain soil productivity.

The inability of Indian agriculture to meet the demand for food in the country during the two and half decades immediately after independence had been a matter of concern at those times. The system of our agriculture based on the traditional knowledge and practices handed down from generation to generation could not produce enough to feed the increasing population. The ignominy of our dependence for food on the western developed nations and the politics of food aid practiced by them added to our determination to be self-sufficient in food production by modernizing agriculture. The green revolution fulfilled our aspirations by changing India from a food importing to a food exporting nation. However, the achievement was at the expense of ecology and environment and to the detriment of the well-being of the people.
