“Biodiversity, the planet’s most valuable resource, is on loan to us from our children.”

The significance of Plant Genetic Resources (PGR’s) is on top of agenda of all those who are concerned with food, nutritional and environmental security by using the Earth’s plant - biodiversity judiciously in a vital form. Agro-biodiversity is the backbone of a nation’s food security and the basis of economic development as a whole. The top-down system of agricultural research, where farmers are seen merely as recipients of research rather than as participants in it, has contributed to an increased dependence on a relatively few plant varieties. Global cooperation from farmers to agricultural scientist is critical for maintaining the balance across the agricultural landscape. Over the years this diversity in India is under pressure due to the massive commercialization of agriculture leading to the almost extinction of traditional farming systems and plant- biodiversity is under immediate threat. Behind this commercialization there lies the interest of the breeders for obtaining intellectual property rights. Around 1.6 billion people depend on farm-saved seed, yet up to 75 per cent of varieties of some key crops have already been lost this century. The rate of loss may well increase as global trade rules, intellectual property rights regimes, the concentration of agricultural research and development on inappropriate technological‘solutions’, and now the introduction and promotion of genetically engineered products, all combine to erode local resources from the fields of smallholder farmers. At the moment, it should call for a balancing on research into modern biotechnology, in favour of a redirection of research and development resources into sustainable, environmentally-friendly technologies that, sustain poor people’s livelihoods, agricultural biodiversity and agro-ecosystem functions. In this context, the importance of farmer-derived Agricultural Biodiversity that includes the variety and variability of plants and micro-organisms which are necessary to maintain the structure, processes and key functions of the agricultural ecosystem for, and in support of, food production and food security.

Biodynamic farming is a holistic agricultural approach that integrates celestial rhythms, including lunar phases and astrological cycles, into farming practices to enhance soil health, plant growth, and farm productivity. Central to this practice are planting calendars and guides, which help farmers align their activities with cosmic rhythms. Additionally, cropping systems in biodynamic farming are designed to optimize resource use, improve soil fertility, and promote ecological balance. This article explores the principles and practical applications of planting calendars and guides in biodynamic farming, examines various cropping systems employed in biodynamic agriculture, and discusses their impact on farm management and sustainability. By understanding these elements, farmers can effectively incorporate biodynamic practices into their agricultural systems, contributing to more resilient and productive farming operations.

Dyes are one of the most important by products of the plants, as they are related with cultural practices, rituals, arts and crafts, fabrics and to satisfy personal embodiment. However, dye yielding plants have not received significant attention (Grover and Patni, 2011). Dye is a substance that has affinity to the substrate to which it is being applied such as textile fibers, foodstuffs and powder. They are organic coloured substances which absorb light in the visible part of the spectrum and have the property of colouring the substrate they are applied to.
 
Colourants which are obtained from plants and natural sources are known as natural dyes. Natural dyes have been traditionally used in most of the countries. These dyes were obtained from roots, leaves and bark (Akhtar et al., 2012). Natural dyes find use in the colouring of textiles, drugs, cosmetics, etc. Owing to their non-toxic effects, they are also used for colouring various food products. In India, there are more than 450 plants that can yield dyes (Siva, 2007).

Abstract

The recent earth movements and the related seismicities in the Southern part of the Indian Peninsula has been a matter of enigma for a century and more. While one school was strongly holding the opinion that the southern Indian Peninsula is free from recent earth movements as it is a shield area, the other school has narrated the possibilities for the ongoing earth movements. Under these circumstances, the various anomalies observed from satellite data and ground based information on geomorphology, subsurface lithology, geophysics, hydrogeology, geochemistry etc. have suggested a possible Pleistocene / Holocene graben along Pondicherry in the northeast and Cumbum Valley in the southwest in the southern tip of the Indian Peninsula.

Abstract

The tectonics of the geological past from Archaeozoic to early part of Cenozoic era has been studied due to their penetrative documentation in the form of folds and faults. But the tectonic history of the latter part of the Cenozoic era (i.e Pleistocene period) has remained a matter of conjecture owing to the poor response of the rocks to Pleistocene movements. In the present study the authors presented a model for the Pleistocene earth movements of South India through the study of river migration, coast line changes and lineament fabric derived from the space borne photographs.

In the area of study, the northerly migration of Paleru and Pennar and southerly shift of Palar, Ponnaiyar and Cauvery rivers, marine regressions restricted within this segment and the closely spaced crest line fractures suggest a lineament controlled E-W trending Quaternary upwarping along Mangalore-Madras alignment. Similar E-W cymatogeny is inferred in the southern tip of the Peninsular India on the basis of once again such observations. Such E-W trending Pleistocene arching phenomenon suggests a N-S oriented regional compression which could be related to the collision of Indian plate with Tibetan plate.

14.1 Changes in policy and strategy

14.1.1 Policy changes

In the discussion on land use planning we suggested that the ideal pattern of development is to establish a long-term national or regional policy, which leads to medium-term strategies, and short-term tactical operations. In the real world a curious situation is arising in that the adoption of the new land husbandry approach is growing so fast that the practitioners have moved ahead of the politicians and opinion formers, with the result that the implementation of strategies by Non-Government Organisations, aid agencies, and senior field officers, is helping to shape new policies.

There is always the problem that national policies ought to be long term, but are created by politicians usually working within a short time frame to the next election. Fortunately, the land husbandry approach allows planners at all levels from farmers to governments to appreciate the long-term issues.

The new approach was mentioned in section 9.2.1 in connection with land use planning. It is summed up in the slogan From soil conservation to land husbandry, and two reviews using that title list the main points as the need for:

Natural farming in India is witnessing growing acceptance, driven by concerns over environmental sustainability, soil health, and human well-being. To accelerate this transition away from chemical-intensive practices, both central and state governments, along with NGOs, have initiated comprehensive support systems that include policy frameworks, training, financial aid, and market facilitation.
A cornerstone of India’s natural farming policy is the Bharatiya Prakritik Krishi Paddhati (BPKP), launched under the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY). This centrally sponsored scheme empowers states to implement natural farming by offering financial and technical assistance. States like Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra have led in adopting cluster-based natural farming models with large-scale training and demonstration programs.
Farmer training is central to adoption. Institutions such as Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), agricultural universities, and NGOs conduct extensive workshops on techniques like Jeevamrit, mulching, intercropping, and water conservation. Learning is made accessible through practical exposure, model farms, and local-language manuals, supported by digital tools like mobile advisories and community radio.
Support mechanisms include input subsidies for cow-based formulations, certification under Jaivik Bharat, and marketing linkages. Farmer Producer, Organizations (FPOs) facilitate input procurement, processing, and branding, while digital platforms improve market access and price realization.

Introduction

Agriculture stands as the primary pillar of the global economy and serves as the cornerstone for food and nutritional security, yet it generates substantial amounts of waste. This agricultural waste, including food processing waste, crop residues, animal waste, and agricultural chemicals, amounts to approximately 998 million tons annually worldwide. In India alone, around 500 million tons of crop residue are produced yearly, with a significant portion utilized for fodder and fuel, while a surplus of 140 million tons remains, with approximately 92 million tons being burned annually. However, there has been a historical oversight in efficiently harnessing this energy within the agricultural sector (Sinha et al., 2021). Agricultural waste management is a critical issue in India, given the country’s vast agricultural sector and the substantial amount of waste it generates. Effective management of agri-waste not only mitigates environmental pollution but also contributes to sustainable agricultural practices and economic development through resource recovery and energy production (Gupta et al., 1998). The Indian government, recognizing the significance of this challenge, has developed a comprehensive policy framework and regulatory mechanisms to address agri-waste management. These policies aim to promote the efficient utilization of agricultural residues, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance soil health through the recycling of organic waste. The current chapter explores various India’s policy framework and regulatory landscape in agri-waste management, highlighting the strategies, challenges, and opportunities within this crucial sector.

Policy plays a critical role in shaping the future of agricultural sciences. It determines the resources allocated to research, the inclusivity of publishing practices, and the extent of global collaboration (Fig. 15.1).
This chapter outlines actionable policy recommendations to support equitable publishing, strengthen research infrastructure, and encourage global partnerships. Furthermore, it delves into the importance of fostering interdisciplinary research and emphasizes why agricultural sciences need to continue gaining momentum in the face of global challenges.
15.1. Equitable Publishing Practices
Access to academic publishing remains a significant challenge for researchers in developing countries. High article processing charges (APCs) for open-access journals often exclude underfunded institutions and individual researchers. Policy interventions are essential to create a more equitable publishing ecosystem.
15.1.1. Subsidies for Open Access Publishing
Governments and funding agencies should subsidize APCs for researchers from low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). For instance, the Plan S initiative-backed by organizations like the European Science Foundation—aims to make all publicly funded research open access (Plan S, 2018).

Drought, a sporadic yet impactful event, presents a significant challenge to agricultural systems and economies globally. A notable observation in this context is the tendency of policymakers to readily claim success for their governance during years of favorable weather, while conversely attributing agricultural failures in drought years primarily to natural causes. This inclination often masks an underlying lack of consistent focus and investment in proactive drought-proofing measures. This international comparison examines the contrasting approaches to drought management between developed and developing nations, highlighting how this lack of focus, coupled with varying capacities and resources, shapes their respective policy responses. Understanding these disparities is crucial for fostering more effective and equitable drought resilience measures worldwide, moving beyond the simplistic attribution of agricultural successes to policy and failures solely to weather

Introduction

Environment pollution is a burning topic of the day. Air, water and soil are being polluted alike. Soil being a “universal sink” bears the greatest burden of environmental pollution. It is getting polluted in a number of ways. There is importance in controlling the soil pollution in order to preserve the soil fertility and increase the productivity. Pollution may be defined as an undesirable change in the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of air, water and soil which affect human life, lives of other useful living plants and animals, industrial progress, living conditions and cultural resources. A pollutant is something which harmfully interferes with health, comfort and environment of the people. Most pollutants are introduced in the environment by waste, accidental discharge, sewage or else. They are by-products or residues from the production of something useful. Due to this our valuable natural resources like air, water and soil are getting polluted. The basis of agriculture is Soil. All crops for human food and animal feed depend upon it. We are losing this important natural resource by the accelerated erosion to some extent. In addition to this the huge quantities of man-made waste products, sludge and other product from new waste treatment plants, and even polluted water are also causing or leading to soil pollution. In order to preserve the fertility and the productivity of the soil.

7.1. Introduction

The integrated farming system (IFS) is becoming increasingly important for effective farm resource management in order to increase farm productivity, reduce environmental degradation, improve the quality of life for resource-poor farmers, and ensure sustainability. Integration happens when one production sub-system's outputs (typically by-products) are used as inputs in another within the farm unit (Radhammani et al., 2003; Lightfoot and Minnick, 1991). IFS are a mixed farming system made up of at least two distinct but logically linked components of crop and animal enterprises. The integrated farming system is effective in reducing risk, increasing productivity and revenues, and improving the use of organic waste and agricultural leftovers.

HUMAN POPULATION GROWTH

The evolution of man took place about one million years ago in response to changes in the physical environment. We learnt gradually to adapt different modes of life to varying environments and migrated different parts of the world. Human activities have had their impact on the environment, which was depending on the number of people living in  the area and  their level  of economic development. Per capita consumption of food, energy and other resources in developed countries is larger and its impact on the environment is much greater than equal number of persons living in developing countries in Africa or Asia. Therefore, the distribution of population needs to be examined in detail.

Pulses are the major source of lysine richprotein, which is supplementaryto cereal based proteins (metheonine).Leguminous speciesproducing edible seeds occupy prominent place in Indian dietary habits. They are, even today, a primary sourceof protein forthe majority of population in the country. Avariety of pulse crops such as peas, lentils, urad, tur, moong, yellow peas, chickenpea,pigeonpea andbeans aregrown underdifferent agro-climatic conditions, and India is recognized globally as a major player contributing toabout25 percentoftheworld’sproduction.Thepresent demand forpulsesin the countryis estimated to be about 15 milliontonnes, while the productionhovers around 12 to 14 million tones. The post harvest losses in the legumes take place at farm as well as in storage as reported by DMI (2002) are detailed in Table 1, 2 and 3.

The stages through which the commodity passes from harvest till consumption are considered as post harvest stages. Post harvest management is one important component of agriculture and is the key to make more food and nutrition available to people. In integrated farming system, varieties of foods are produced. However, if they are not stored properly and/or processed, there may be both quantitative and qualitative losses. The produce may be attacked by different extraneous organisms including microorganisms, birds, rodents, etc. These spoilage agents may impair the quality of food, degrade the nutritional value and even make the food unfit for consumption. Besides, value addition of the food produce is another area where the overall profitability of the farming system can be improved. Thus proper management of post harvest operations and value addition are very important.

Importance of post harvest management and value addition

It has been estimated that about 10% of the food grains and about 30-40% of the fruits and vegetables are lost every year in a country like India due to improper post harvest management and lack of value addition. New avenues to increase food production are being explored to meet the demand of growing population of the country. However, prevention of post harvest losses is one basic step that can be taken up to make more food available for the people. In addition, proper post harvest management and food processing can help in the following aspects.

Optimal quality organic produce that combines the desired textural properties, sensory shelf-life, and nutritional content results from the careful implementation of recommended production inputs and practices, careful handling at harvest, and appropriate postharvest handling and storage. This section will focus on an overview of general postharvest handling considerations unique to the marketing of registered or certified organic produce.

Maturity index for fruits and vegetables

The principles dictating at which stage of maturity a fruit or vegetable should be harvested are crucial to its subsequent storage and marketable life and quality. Post-harvest physiologists distinguish three stages in the life span of fruits and vegetables: maturation, ripening and senescence. Maturation is indicative of the fruit being ready for harvest. At this point, the edible part of the fruit or vegetable is fully developed in size, although it may not be ready for immediate consumption. Ripening follows or overlaps maturation, rendering the produce edible, as indicated by taste. Senescence is the last stage, characterized by natural degradation of the fruit or vegetable, as in loss of texture, flavour, etc. (senescence ends at the death of the tissue of the fruit). Some typical maturity indexes are described in following sections.

Introduction

India produces 77.51 million tones of fruits of which only 10-20% are processed and rest are used as fresh (Singh 2010).  The post harvest losses are estimated to be in the order of 20-40%.  In terms of value it exceeds Rs.2000/- crores annually (Chadha 1989).  Processing of fruits under arid conditions is all the more important due to non-availability of fresh produce throughout the year in rural areas.  However, the area and production under arid fruits are increasing day by day in the states of Rajasthan, Haryana and Gujarat.  As a result seasonal glut has started in the local market and growers are not able to get the remunerative prices of their produce. In our country over 70% of the Indian population resides in village and are engaged mainly in farming and related activities besides their exclusive involvement in domestic work. Keeping above points in view, Agro-based technology should be developed for rural masses to create gainful employment by increasing the productivity through value added processed from arid fruits.

Pulses are one of the highly consumed eatables due to their palatability and nutritious quality. They are essential components of food as sources of protein to vast vegetarian population. Being a cheap source of proteins, pulses also play an important role in nutritional security of the nation. Pulses also provide green pods for vegetables and nutritious fodder for cattle because of their rich essential amino acid lysine content. Dry pulses are converted to dal and used by majority of people. Since majority of Indians are vegetarians, they depend largely on grain legumes (pulses) for their dietary protein.

India produce a wide range of tropical, subtropical and temperate horticultural crops at different places by virtue of its varietals agro- climate conditions. The total annual production of fruits and vegetables is around 135.5 million tones, fruits being 48 million tones and vegetables around 87.5 million tones. India is the second largest producer of fruits and vegetable in the world. They are major sources of important valuable vitamins and minerals. Being highly perishable, fruits and vegetables can be preserved and processed either at farm level or at cottage scale/home scale during market glut season or extra seasonal produce from kitchen garden for later use. Farmers and entrepreneurs can set up their own processing units by adopting simple, low cost innovative processing technologies which will save post harvest losses of these perishable crops and also give good returns to grower and better earning to processor/ entrepreneurs.

Abstract
All the technologies are applied from harvesting of fruits to its final consumption is called as post harvest technology. Development of processing industry takes care of surplus produce as well as of those fruits that are of lower quality. With the development of processing industry citrus fruits can be utilized for the production of wide range of commercial products. The large variability in physico-chemical characteristics of citrus fruits provides an opportunity to select desirable types for commercial exploitation. In India citrus fruit is available in large quantity that can be processed in to different processed products very easily. The fresh citrus fruits are not consumed in large quantity as fresh fruit due to high acidic in taste. The post-harvest technology including value addition would provide opportunity for commercial exploitation of the citrus fruits and leads to the marketing and processing in to quality products.

With over one-third of global food lost post-harvest, reducing these losses is critical for food security, resource conservation, and improving farmers' livelihoods, particularly for rice, a staple for 65% of India's population. India, the second-largest rice producer, faces significant post-harvest losses (up to 9% for paddy) due to outdated drying, milling, and storage practices. Effective postharvest management, including timely harvesting at 20-22% moisture content, mechanized threshing, and advanced drying techniques like solar bubble dryers, can minimize losses and enhance grain quality. Innovations such as hermetic storage bags and rubber roller milling further reduce losses and improve market value. These practices open avenues for agripreneurship through custom hiring of machinery and value-added products like rice bran oil and ready-made mixes, fostering rural economic growth and sustainable food systems.

Introduction

The post-harvest and marketing system comprised of a series of interconnected activities which starts after the harvesting process and continues until the distribution of food products to the consumers. An effective post-harvest system makes sure that the food product reaches the customer in a short time without sacrificing volume, quality, and safety of the food product (Gardas et al., 2018). Increasing population growth in the last few centuries and the requirements from industrialization forces the need for sustainable food production and better food processing technologies. There is a requirement of balance between sustainable food production practices, a healthy environment, and a healthy population due to the rapid changes in the climate and population. According to the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), there will be a requirement of a 70% increase in food production in 2050 due to the growing population across the world (FAO, 2017).

The challenges such as improper land use, decrease in biodiversity, aquatic eutrophication by over-fertilization, global warming, water shortages due to improper irrigation etc. imposed awareness among the stakeholders to bring more efficient approaches in agricultural and food production practices. This brings the idea of terms such as recyclable and eco-friendly packaging, buy local, whole foods, free-from, and fair-trade (Boye and Arcand, 2013). Recent trends in climate and changes in the environment may pose challenges to achieve the required food production in the future. In addition to the steps taken for increasing food production, the steps to reduce food loss are important. In 2011, it was calculated that 11.3 billion tonnes of food was wasted in a year, which is almost one- third of the total food production (FAO, 2011).

7.1 Method of Drying Cucumber and Pumpkin Seeds: Seeds are combined with wood ash and spread on a plate (Thali) under direct sunlight. This accelerates drying by allowing the wood ash to absorb excess moisture from the seeds, preventing them from clumping together (Mandi, Himachal Pradesh). Verma (1998).

7.2 Drying of Millets, Pulses, and Oilseeds on New Moon Days: Grains are sun-dried to remove moisture. This practice is typically carried out on a 'new moon' day, believed to reduce vulnerability to pest damage (Tamil Nadu). Parvathi et al. (2000). Most of the farmers are storing grain in Amavasya (New moon) because it is believed that risk of pest attack is high in the moonlight as compared to new moon. The leaf of Azadirachta indica (neem) and Calotropis procera (madar) are mixed with cow dung. This mixture used as an excel- lent insecticide and pest growth inhibitor (Joseph et al. 2013; Misra 2014).

7.3 Drying Wheat and Maize Cobs Using Indirect Heat: For drying wheat and maize cobs, indirect heat from the hearth (Chullah) is employed. In traditional houses, typically with three floors, the ground floor shelters domestic animals, the first floor serves as living quarters, and above the kitchen lies a storeroom where freshly harvested maize cobs and wheat are placed for drying. Sunlight also aids in the drying process (Kangra, Himachal Pradesh). Verma (1998).

Abstract

Nitrate reductase (NR) catalyzes the reduction of nitrate to nitrite, which is the first step in the nitrate assimilation pathway, but can also reduce nitrite to nitric oxide (NO), an important signaling molecule that is thought to mediate a wide array of developmental and physiological processes in plants. Accordingly, the amount of NR protein and its catalytic activity are closely controlled in the cell. This chapter focuses on the posttranslational regulation of NR activity, which has been known for some time to involve reversible protein phosphorylation. The hinge 1 region of NR contains the serine-534 regulatory site, which when phosphorylated can bind a 14-3-3 protein resulting in inhibition of NR activity. This fundamental mechanism underlies the rapid modulation of NR activity in leaves in response to light/dark transitions, and the activation of NR that occurs in response to hypoxia (e.g., as with soil flooding). Recent results suggest that the basis for hypoxia-induced NR activation, which is thought to be essential for plant survival, may involve reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as H₂O₂, that are produced in response to many plant stressors including hypoxia.

Abstract

Quality of water is a matter of serious concern for arid and semi arid region like Rajasthan. The study area chosen is extreme western arid part of Rajasthan state where water quality and quantity both are very important issues. Due to absence of any perennial river, scanty rainfall and scarcity of surface water resources, ground water is very deep and saline. The groundwater potability assessment was based on 1119 wells water quality data. The purposes of this investigation were (1) to provide an overview of present groundwater quality and (2) to determine spatial distribution of groundwater quality parameters which affect water potability and (3) to map groundwater potability in the study area by using GIS and Geostatistics techniques. Arc GIS 9.3 and Arc GIS Geostatistical Analyst were used for generation of various thematic maps and Arc GIS Spatial Analyst to produce the final groundwater potability map.

Potassium is the third important essential nutrient element after nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) required by all living organisms, including plants and animals. Potassium is essential for many metabolic activities like carbohydrate metabolism, nitrogen metabolism. It is required for the activation of over 60 enzymes in plants. It controls/regulates the activities of various essential nutrients. It is vital to photosynthesis, and synthesis of carbohydrates, starch and proteins in plants. It plays vital role in controlling the opening and closing of stomata in photosynthesis. It also helps in controlling water use by plants by regulating the osmotic pressure of guard cells during transpiration. It plays a major role in transport of water and nutrients throughout the plant in xylem. Potassium improves crop yield and quality of flowers, fruits, vegetables and other field crops in terms of size, shape, colour, taste, shelf-life, and fibre quality. Potassium stimulates the growth of strong stems and provides strength to the plant against some disease by promoting thickness of the outer cell walls. It is required for translocation of assimilates. Under reduced K supply, translocation of NO₃^-, PO₄^3-, Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺ and amino acids is hampered. It also imparts resistance against environmental stresses such as drought, cold and frost. Adequate K can reduce moisture loss from growing plants, thereby giving some drought resistance. It reduces lodging of crops and enhances their winter-hardiness.

It is taken up by the plants as K⁺. Being a basic element, it takes part in neutralization of the acidity in plants caused by several organic acids produced. It does not form organic compounds in the plant system. It is the most mobile element in the plant. Thus, it can move through all the plant system due to osmotic pressure. When any plant sample is dipped into water, some K comes out. This shows that it is highly mobile.

Potassium is also required for animal nutrition and human beings. Potassium is essential for many metabolic functions. It maintains salt balance between cells and body fluids. Adequate K is essential for nerve function and preventing muscle cramps. It is routinely added to many animal feeds. Since K⁺ is not stored in the human body, dietary replacement is required on a regular basis. Government agencies state that diets containing foods that are good sources of K and low in Na may reduce the risk of high blood pressure and stroke.

This chapter examines potassium behaviour and management in irrigated soils. It begins with the functions of potassium and explains the different forms in which potassium occurs in soil, including relatively unavailable, slowly available and readily available forms. Potassium fixation and release are discussed in relation to soil colloids, temperature, drying, soil pH and aeration. These processes determine the amount of potassium available for plant uptake and are particularly important in intensively cultivated irrigated soils. The chapter also considers luxury consumption and interactions between potassium and other elements. Potassium management is discussed through appropriate rates and methods of application and selection of suitable potassic fertilizers. The effects of potassium nutrition on plant behaviour, water utilization, carbohydrate and nitrogen metabolism, crop quality, disease resistance and low-temperature injury are highlighted. Abstract

Potassium is a very essential nutrient element that is required for proper health, growth, functioning and productivity of plants. However, up to 98% of this very important mineral is held up in insoluble, unavailable forms in the soil and with only approximately 2% soluble form available for plant use. Biofertilizers add nutrients to the soil for plant use by some mechanisms like the breakdown of phosphorus, potassium, fixing nitrogen, and also synthesizing some substances which in turn enhance plant growth. These processes take place naturally. Microorganisms that solubilize potassium have demonstrated an increased potassium uptake by plants when added as bio-inoculants consequently resulting in increased yield by these plants. This article reviewed the methods of isolation of potassium solubilizing bacteria and fungi and their use as biofertilizers. Data are presented showing summary of researches conducted on potassium solubilizing microorganisms and their findings. Figures on production efforts of biofertilizers in India per year and by states are also added.

Potassium (K) is among the most important essential macronutrients for plant growth. About 98% of the potassium in the earth’s crust exists in insoluble forms as rocks and silicate minerals, resulting in very low concentrations of soluble potassium in the soil for plant growth and development. Potassium is never incorporated in any organic compound and even in the plant system it remains as K⁺ ion. It does not form any gas that could be lost to the atmosphere. It does not cause eutrophication. When left in the ecosystem as such, it is not at all toxic.Potassium activates enzymes, maintains cell turgor, enhances photosynthesis, reduces respiration, helps in transport of sugars and starches, and is essential for protein synthesis. In addition to plant metabolism, potassium improves crop quality because it helps in grain filling and kernel weight, strengthens straw, increases disease resistance and helps the plant better to withstand stress.

Potassium in Soils

Soils usually contain potassium in larger amounts than any other nutrients. Total K content in soil is 30,000- 50,000 kg/ha in top layer of the soil. Nearly 98 % of K bound in the mineral form and 2 % is in soil solution. Generally, potassium in soils exist in four forms (often called fractions), their availability to crop roots is considerably different.

Glauber J. R. (1604–1670) in Netherlands first proposed that the salt peter (KNO₃) was the principle of vegetation. He obtained large increases in crop yield by addition of salt peter.

Mineral soils contain 0.04–3.0% K. Total potassium content of soils range from 3000 to 100000 kg per ha in the upper 0.2 m of soil profile. Of this total potassium approximately 98 percent is bound in mineral form whereas 2% in soil solution and exchangeable phases.

ROLE OF POTASSIUM

It is Involved in activating the enzymes (as many as 80) responsible for carbon dioxide reduction and required for synthesis of adenosine triphosphate. Hence deficiency of potassium reduces crop growth and yields.

This chapter, Potential and Achievable Crop Production, delves into the crucial distinction between what a crop can produce under ideal circumstances and what it actually produces in the farmer‘s field. Understanding this dichotomy is paramount for addressing global food security challenges, optimizing resource utilization, and developing sustainable agricultural practices. We will begin by exploring the theoretical maximum yield, often termed "potential production," which represents the inherent capacity of a crop variety to produce biomass and yield when all limiting factors are eliminated. This potential is primarily dictated by a crop‘s genetic makeup and the prevailing climatic conditions, such as solar radiation, temperature, and carbon dioxide concentration. Subsequently, we will shift our focus to achievable production, the real-world yield obtained by farmers. This actual yield invariably falls short of the potential due to a myriad of biotic (pests, diseases, weeds), abiotic (water scarcity, nutrient deficiencies, extreme temperatures, poor soil health), and socio-economic (lack of access to inputs, knowledge, or markets) constraints. The disparity between potential and achievable yield, known as the "yield gap," represents a significant opportunity for enhancing agricultural output without necessarily expanding cultivated land. By meticulously examining the factors that contribute to this gap, we can identify targeted interventions and innovative strategies to bridge it, thereby moving closer to realizing the full productive capacity of our agricultural systems. This chapter will therefore provide a comprehensive framework for understanding the science behind crop yields and the practical approaches required to optimize them for a more food-secure future.

Agriculture and allied service sector in Karnataka, contributes about one third to the state Gross Domestic Product (GDP).  This sector still continues to be the largest source of employment in the state with about 70% of the population depending on it.  Agriculture plays a key role   in the state’s economy with a net-cropped area of 107.90 lakh ha. of which 23.20 lakh ha. is irrigated and 84.79 lakh ha is rainfed.  In today’s competitive environment, one need to rethink about the sustainability of development, whether it is individual or the area and agriculture or any other field .To develop the rainfed area and the people, the World Bank assisted Sujala Watershed Project is implemented through the Karnataka Watershed Development Department (KWDD).  This has become a boon towards sustainable development of the rainfed area and the people. The first phase of KWDP focuses on poverty alleviation and improvement in agricultural productivity through its multi faceted approach.  That is, the land treatment for improving their agricultural productivity and strengthening Self Help Groups (SHGs) in the selected area to take up viable Income Generating Activities, which paves way for the overall development of the area and the people living there.  The project area covered five districts namely, Kolar, Tumkur, Chitradurga, Haveri and Dharwad in Karnataka state of India.

Agroforestry systems have the potential to make use of marginal and degraded lands through the soil improving effects of trees. Underlying all aspects of the role of agro forestry in maintenance of soil fertility is the fundamental proposition that trees improve soils. It would be useful to have guidelines on which properties of a tree or shrub species make it desirable for the point of view of soil fertility. This would help in identifying naturally occurring species and selecting trees for systems which have soil improvement as a specific objective.
Agroforestry is a sustainable land management system which increases the overall yield of the land, combines the production of crops (including tree crops) and forest plants and/or animals simultaneously or sequentially, on the same unit of land and applies management practices that are compatible with the cultural practices of the local population. Nitrogen fixation and a high biomass production have been widely recognized as desirable. However, many properties are specific to particular objectives of systems in which the trees are used. Even species that are shunned for their competitive effects may have a role in certain designs. The fast development of technology for increasing production ignoring the agroecosystem resulted in disturbed natural cycles. The result is visible in terms of unsustainabiliity in agroecosystem. In addition, increasing use of chemical pesticides for the management of soil-borne plant pathogens had caused pollution of soil, surface and ground water besides affecting the crop produce and ecosystem. The pendulum of public opinion once so favourable to chemical control has gone against chemicals and advocated phasing out the chemical pesticides. Revival of the natural balance is therefore needed for sustainable farming with eco-friendly methods such as bioagents/biopesticides, soil solarization, botanicals, etc. Organic farming is one such approach which emphasis on maintaining the natural cycle with eco-friendly approaches.

Introduction 
It is commonly acknowledged that the swift rise in urbanization and population expansion is the primary reason for the increasing consumption of fossil fuels, which ultimately results in the exhaustion of fuels generated from petroleum. Globally, the scarcity of fossil fuels poses a significant challenge. Furthermore, there are significant worries about the negative impacts of the heavy reliance on petroleum-based fuels on the economy, energy and the environment conservation. Consequently, extensive research has been dedicated to identifying alternative sources that can mitigate the dependence on fossil fuels [1]. Biofuels have garnered worldwide attention as a potential substitute for fossil fuel-derived fuels, given their distinctive qualities [2]. Utilizing a variety of plant sources, including sugarcane, corn, soybeans, vegetables, palm oil, and Jatropha (often used in Africa), biofuel production is progressing on almost every continent. Bioethanol is successfully used as a biodiesel in addition to gasoline for otto-cycle engines in nations like the USA and Brazil [3]. Conversely, biodiesel represents a significant category of biofuel capable of partially or fully replacing diesel obtained from fossil fuels. Biodiesel is made via a process called trans-esterification that uses renewable biolipids [4]. Biodiesel can be produced from oil that comes from nonedible agricultural seeds or kernels [5]. Furthermore, edible oils from plants such as sunflower, palm, and soybean are used as feedstocks to produce biodiesel [6]. In the field of biofuel research, nanotechnology and nanomaterials have proven to be useful instruments for improving output quality at a reasonable cost. Algae stands out prominently in discussions about biofuel production due to concerns related to food resources. Types of biofuels and their sources are represented in the (Fig.1). The use of crops and plants yielding food is considered unsuitable for prioritizing biofuel production due to potential disruptions in food supply. Notably, various algal species vary in their production capacity. The utilization of nanoparticles (NPs) is advantageous in biofuel synthesis due to their unique characteristics, including a substantial surface area to volume ratio, adsorption capacity, high crystallinity, and stability. This distinguishes them from competing sources as better possibilities [7]. In the process of creating biofuels, metal oxide nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes are widely used as nano-catalysts because of their extra characteristics that allow for their high potential recovery [8]. The overall procedure for producing biodiesel on a small scale and for experimental purposes using algae are shown in the (Fig.2).

The overuse of fossil fuels is expanding simultaneously with society’s rapid development, which culminates in a decrease in fossil energy and a very serious deterioration of the environment. The purpose is to make the carbon neutral as fast as possible, which will make the invention of alternative energy sources to replace the fossil fuels. To make world a better place to live, fossil energy is highly needed to be conserved and measures should be made to limit the use of fossil energy. After many researches, the alternate to fossil energy has been made in the form of “BIODIESEL”. Biodiesel, which is produced from renewable resources such as vegetable oil is a new clean alternative to fossil fuel. Biodiesel in the new era of scientific field is mainly produced from Microalgae. Production of biodiesel from microalgae ensures reusing carbon resources from nature. This method contributes to achieve in replacing petroleum use and also helps in reducing pollution in the environment. Biodiesel consist primarily of esters which is formed by methanol or by ethanol and long chains of fatty acids which may be saturated or unsaturated such as palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid and linoleic acid. This is the main and ultimate reason why production and use of biodiesel is attracted the attention of researches worldwide. The biodiesel is developed in three generations that is First, Second and Third generation Microalgae are single-celled organisms which are microscopic. They are an essential component of carbon cycle and they can exploit carbon sources in water and soil efficiently and have plenty of advantages over the other biodiesel sources that are conventional oil crops such as wheat, palm, corns, soybeans, maize and rapeseed. In this century, one of the most important environmental issues is global warming, that is caused by released of greenhouse gases. These microalgae have high rates of biomass production and can survive in a variety of circumstances, such as freshwater, saltwater, and wastewater (Muhammad Abdullah et.al 2024) Their ability to be grown on non-arable ground and their lack of resources competition with food crops are two of their most significant and crucial advantages. The process of producing biodiesel from the microalgae involves many stages. The stepwise structure involves lipid extraction, microalgae cell disruption, harvesting, culture and transesterification. Microalgae re a promising source of biodiesel as they have a high lipid content and can grow quickly. But they are complex in composition and they require a specialized harvesting system. Nanoparticles are an ultrafine unit and have dimensions which are stated in nanometers. These nanoparticles can be detected in the natural environment and can also be generated by human activity. Because of their sub-microscopic size, they boast unique material properties and may be used in many different kinds of fields, namely environmental remediation, engineering and medical care. In general, these residues should can be reprocessed appropriately within agri-business systems to fulfil the nutritional and energy demands in the enterprises (IFS) in order to increase productivity. To reduce the heavy consignment of organic waste matter from the Integrated farming systems, The Multi Resource Vermicompost (MRV) was defined by the IFS as an organic fertiliser made from waste produced in crop production, farm animals, agriculture, and vegetation through bio-oxidative degradation processes facilitated by earthworms and microorganisms in the soil.

Abstract

Trichoderma species play a vital role in the management of plant diseases in association with different commercial bioformutlations of the fungus. Its role as a successful pollution free environment and friendly mechanism of action has been highly exploited. The diversity of species based on location, type of agri-land and association with different fauna  and flora has been instrumental in large upsurge of biological methods of Plant disease management. Pollution of agri-land soils with chemicals, heavy metals and development of resistance to diseases has become an emerging problem coupled with the high costs of Infrastructure. Thus, the interest in alternative biologically based systems is the need for bioremediation, bioecology and biocontrol with Trichoderma.

Abstract

Climate change and variability can adversely affect the poultry production in India, because birds can only tolerate narrow temperature ranges. Thermal stress on poultry is major concern. Heat and clod stress can cause immunosuppression and make birds more prone to infectious diseases. Climate change affects the occurrence, distribution and prevalence of poultry diseases.  Nutritional strategies aimed to alleviate the negative effects of heat stress by maintaining feed intake, electrolyte and water balance or supplementation of micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals to satisfy the special needs during heat stress have been proven advantageous. Ventilation and cooling methods are essential for birds to survive high summertime temperatures. Tunnel ventilation coupled with evaporative cooling is very effective in keeping birds cool during hot weather. The increasing proportion of poultry production in tropic and subtropical region makes it necessary to reconsider the selection strategy and potential use of naked neck and frizzle genes for improving heat tolerance in chicken.

Introduction

Poultry farming is an emerging activity for enhancing nutrition and providing livelihood support to the farmers of this country. Since two decades, this component emerge as the fastest growing segment of agriculture where the broiler segment having a growth rate of more than 10% and the egg production 5-6% per year. As per the report by USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service, India has one of the world’s largest and fastest growing poultry, ranked third in egg production (FAOSTAT) and sixth in broiler meat production. Poultry farming is lucrative because there is minimum investment to start, rapid return, high feed conversion ratio and provides continuous source of income for the farm.
