India is endowed with diverse agro- climatic conditions which facilitate to cultivate various horticultural crops all through the year in one part of the country or others, but the quality of fruits under open field conditions particularly in high value crops (vegetables & flowers) by and large fall short of domestic and international markets standards. Some time there no guarantee of consistent production of from open cultivation, as the crop is exposed to number of environmental factors that changes frequently. Hence it is imperative to increase the productivity and quality of produce to meet the demand of quality conscious consumers. A break through in production technology that integrates market driven quality parameters with the production system simultaneously ensuring a vertical growth is warranted. In this context, most important technology is the Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) i.e. Protected Cultivated Technology (PCTs) such as greenhouse, net house, glasshouse and low tunnel. “Protected cultivation” means modification of plant environment to achieve optimum plant growth avoiding the harmful effect of climatic factors.

Protected Cultivation

Protected cultivation (PC) may be defined as the “modification of the natural environment to achieve optimum plant growth” (Singh, 2005). Modifications can be made to both the aerial and root environments to increase crop yields, extend the growing season and permit plant growth during periods of the year not commonly used to grow open field crops. PC may also indicate comprehensive systems of ‘Controlled Environmental Agriculture’ in which all the aspects of natural environment are modified for maximum plant growth and economic return.

Abstract
India faces a shortfall of 10 million tonnes in vegetable production against a demand of 135 million tonnes, exacerbated by extreme temperatures (5-48°C) that hinder year-round cultivation. Protected cultivation, including greenhouses, polyhouses, and shade nets, offers a solution by enabling off-season vegetable production, enhancing yield, quality, and input efficiency. In regions like Bundelkhand, where agriculture dominates the economy, low-cost protected structures have shown promise in cultivating high-value crops like tomatoes and capsicum, despite challenges such as farmer unawareness, limited capital, and poor infrastructure. Government initiatives, like those by Banda University of Agriculture and Technology, promote low-cost protected cultivation through training and infrastructure development, fostering agripreneurship and improving rural livelihoods by increasing yields and market prices.

Introduction

Biodiversity conservation and sustainable use are critical for maintaining the health and well-being of the Earth and all its inhabitants. Biodiversity provides essential ecosystem services, resources, and cultural values, and is under threat from various human activities. Conservation and sustainable use are necessary for preserving biodiversity and ensuring a sustainable future, and require the participation and collaboration of all stakeholders.

The protection and restoration of biodiversity are complex challenges that require a multidisciplinary approach and a commitment to sustainability. This includes addressing the underlying drivers of biodiversity loss, promoting sustainable land-use practices, protecting ecosystems and wildlife, and engaging in education and awareness-raising activities. By working together to conserve and sustainably use of biodiversity, we can ensure a healthy planet for future generations.

Introduction

Since 2001, India’s human beings population has crossed 1000 million, which is presently 1361 million and will became more than 1462 million during 2025. Such a large population of human beings can be fed and clothed only if we make the best use of the country’s land and water resources. While water is replenishable natural resource. Contrary to this, the land is a non-renewable and irreplaceable resource. It, therefore, becomes an imperative to think of about the main problems of protecting/preserving and managing the land resources f irst of all and thereafter managing the water resources. Such an approach will, infant, prove a solution of both of these resources. It is because if the land of the country is looked after properly, the problem of water management would be automatically tackled (Singh, 2007)

Out of the total land area of India, about 329 million hectares (m ha) as many as175 m ha suffer from degradation, caused for the most part by the soil erosion, water logging, soil salinity and sodicity as well as acidity. This denotes that on an average at least two out of every 3 acres (1.2 ha) of land is in poor condition. It is also known that at least half of the sick land i.e., one third of the total is almost completely unproductive. Another one third is partially productive and it is only the remaining one third is in good health.

Abstract

GIS has several products that can be protected in India as copyright. The paper describes major provisions of copyright Act, 1957 that has been amended five times. GIS products qualify to be registered within various sections of the copyright Act. Patenting of software is permitted in some countries but not in India, a comparative account of these two forms of protection has been discussed with practical examples. General public licensing of open source software, translation, exclusive licensing and data sharing & accessibility policy are other areas covered in the present study and analytical learning.

1.0 Introduction

The copyright Act 1957 was mainly amended in 1994 and1999 to bring into complete harmony with Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs), further major amendment has been done in 2012, that include wide range changes in ownership, term of protection, copyright security, cinematography and broadcasting provisions. In the same year government of India has initiated ‘National Data Sharing and Accessibility Policy (NDSAP)’ which came into operation from February 2012. At present the copyright Act and data sharing policy are the two legal and administrative instruments which facilitate the intellectual property protection and appropriate sharing among stakeholders in the country.

14.1. PPVFR Act

TRIPS (Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights) agreement of WTO (World Trade Organization) was signed.

Enacted PPVFR act in 2001.

Regulation formulated in 2003.

The plant variety is related to intellectual property that needs to be protected for controlled commercial unitization for a specified period. New plant varieties development requires scientific skill, knowledge, significant investment of land and specialized equipments. These varieties are cultivated by farmers in their adaptive region. In development of new variety 10 to 15 years are required. If developed variety successfully commercialized on farmer’s field, then the market business is much higher than input investment. The major issue in developed variety that can be easily reproduced by someone without permission of original breeder. Thus, the original breeder deprived for their f inancial benefit. It is, therefore, critical to provide an effective system of plant variety protection, which encourages the development of new varieties of plants thereby benefiting the breeder and society at large. The sustainable and long-term breeding effort for development of new varieties needs encouragement and financial reward for investing time and skills. To secure legal protection of the developed variety breeder needs to obtained exclusive right from government.After establishment of WTO in 1995 under TRIP the right to protect plant varieties become mandatory for signatory country. It has also realised that existence of the private seed industry, the protection of plant varieties become necessity.

In order to provide for the establishment of an effective system for protection of plant varieties, the rights of farmers and plant breeders and to encourage the development of new varieties of plants it has been considered necessary to recognize and protect the rights of the farmers in respect of their contribution made at any time in conserving, improving and making available plant genetic resources for the development of the new plant varieties. Moreover to accelerate agricultural development, it is necessary to protect plants breeders’ rights to stimulate investment for research and development for the development of new plant varieties.

Protozoa are single celled eukaryotic organisms, which lack cell wall and ability to move at some stage of their life cycle.

They are referred as the first animals.

There are about 65000 described species grouped into 7 phyla. Among them, 50 per cent are not available as living forms (as fossils) and out of remaining 50%, 22,000 species are free-living and 10,000 species are parasitic forms.

Introduction

The soil protozoa are unicellular and the simplest forms of animal life. Most of the protozoa are devoid of chlorophyll but transitional genera resemble the algae and possess chloroplasts containing chlorophyll pigments. The active life stage is commonly known as trophozoite phase where they feed and multiply but under adverse climatic conditions, they form resting stage or cyst, which develop a thick coating on the cell surface. Mostly, the protozoa multiply by longitudinal or transverse fission but some species reproduce sexually by fusion of two cells followed by exchange of genetic material between their nuclei and cell division.

Agricultural research in India has contributed new varieties of crops and production technologies for increased production at the national level. These modern technologies benefited only a particular section but farm youth in rainfed areas are facing many problems. One of the problems identified in the diffusion of technologies to farm youth in sustainable agriculture was the lack of appropriate technologies suitable to the farm and social situations. When farmers in rain fed areas are exposed to innovations, they react to the practices/innovations from different viewpoints. A practice appropriate to farm youth in rain fed areas must be less in cost, high in profits, less risky,  highly compatible with socio-cultural values and beliefs, less in complexity, highly trialable on a small scale and the results of the same should be easily observed and communicated. These dimensions are perceived by farmers differently and the degree to which they perceive them favourably are likely to adopt the same in rain fed areas. Many a time, several past investigations have only indicated whether the recommended package of technologies has been adopted or not by farm youth. This gives percentage of farm youth adopting the practices but not the percentage of recommended technologies adopted by them and the problems encountered by them in adopting the recommended technologies in rain fed areas.

Ever since the dawn of civilization, dependence on plants has been indispensable for human survival. Transformation from food gathering to settled agriculture necessitated domestication of plant species useful for mankind leading to co-evolution of plants and man in absolute harmony with nature. Natural disasters like famines, floods, epidemics have often led people to search new plant species for human consumption. Out of an estimated total of 80,000 plants of possible economic use, about 30,000 plants have been found to be edible in nature and approximately 7,000 plants have been cultivated by mankind at one time or the other, of which only 158 plants are widely used for food (Wilson, 1992). Among these, 30 crops provide 90% of the world’s food and only 10 crops supply 75% of the world’s food budget. Out of the above only three crops, rice, wheat and maize provide 60% of the world’s total food requirement (Paroda, 2000). This dangerously narrow level of food base may imperil the existence of mankind during a time of impending crisis in unforeseen times in the future.

This chapter delves into the critical role of fostering understanding and knowledge of agrometeorological principles among the broader public, with a particular focus on empowering farming communities. By exploring the significance of making weather and climate information accessible, relevant, and actionable, we will examine the strategies, initiatives, and global efforts aimed at building a weather-literate agricultural sector (Fig. 15.1). Ultimately, enhanced public awareness in this domain equips individuals and communities with the tools to make informed decisions, mitigate risks, adapt to changing climatic conditions, and contribute to more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems worldwide.

Tools of Public Awareness

The public awareness and awakening can be created among people through various means and ways. In this age of computers and communication, science and technology, information and advertisements there are several quick and effective means of spreading news. The electronic media, the press, education institution, religious, adult education, moral education, spiritual education, religious discourse etc. all are essentially complementary to each other. The governments and the policy makers can only work forwards environmental preservation on political basis. The media, if work passively on pro environmental issues, awareness can be effectively generated among people.

Pulses are legumes whose grains are consumed as dal. Thus all legumes are not pulses, but all pulses are legumes. Legumes are characterized by presence of nodules in the root systems and papilionaceous form of flowers. Pigeon pea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millisp.], green gram [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczec.], black gram [Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper], cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.], horse gram[Macroyloma uniflorum [(Lam.) Verd.] and moth bean[Vigna acontilifolia (jacq.) Marechal] are the important kharif pulse crops grown in different parts of India. The common rabi pulses are chickpea(Cicer arietinum L.), lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.), pea (Pisum sativum L.), lathyrus (Lathyrus sativus L.) and frenchbean ( Phaseolus vulgaris ). All these have C₃ photosynthetic cycle. All form root nodules in association with symbiotic bacterium Rhizobium. Increase in concentration of green house gases, particularly carbon di-oxide, has led to global warming and climate change. The extreme weather events such as drought, excess moisture, untimely rain, cyclone, excess heat and hailstorm have become common. Crops respond differently to increase in CO₂ concentration. Both abiotic and biotic stresses due to global warming are likely to reduce productivity of pulses/pulse based cropping systems through adverse effects on crop growth and development. Birthalet al. (2014) reported higher decrease in grain yield of pulses(pigeonpea and chickpea) as compared to cereals (rice and wheat) due to rise in the minimum and the maximum temperature.

Pulses are edible seeds of the family Leguminosae, sub family papilionaceae, and are integral part of Indian diet. Indians consume 30 per cent of the world’s pulses, but domestic production of pulses has not kept pace with population growth. Pulses are called “poor man’s meat” as pulses are rich in protein, which is double the protein content of wheat and three times that of rice. Globally, 190 mha of pulses contributes to 5-7 mt of nitrogen in soils.

Abstract

Consumers increased response to new products with high sensory, organoleptic and nutritional potentials has impelled a search for new substitutes to processing methods. For several years, thermal processing was the main technology for producing safe products with long shelf lives, although in most cases losses of fresh flavors, vitamins, and some physicochemical characteristics were the price of safety and long-term stability. Pulsed electric field (PEF) processing as a non- thermal technique has been proven to inactivate microorganisms with minimal losses of flavor and food quality, possibly making it the answer to present-day consumer demands. In addition, the low processing temperatures used in this non- thermal technology allow the process to be nutrient preserving, energy efficient, which translates into lower costs and fewer environmental impacts. In this chapter, the the configuration of various PEF equipment, their electric configuration and recent application of this technique in processing of foods have been discussed in detail.

1. Introduction

Conservation agriculture (CA) strategies and practices have been developed and promoted to reduce risk and improve natural resource conditions, as well as address the combination of low yields, production risks and poor natural resource conditions. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), CA is an approach to managing agro-ecosystems for improved and sustained productivity, increased profits and food security while preserving and enhancing the resource base and the environment. It is based on enhancing natural biological and ecological processes above and below ground. Interventions such as mechanical soil tillage are reduced to an absolute minimum, and the use of external inputs such as agrochemicals and nutrients of mineral or organic origin are applied at an optimum level and in a way and quantity that does not interfere with or disrupt biological processes (FAO, 2008). 

The relevance and need for an eco-friendly alternative farming system arose from the ill effects of the chemical farming practicesadopted worldwide during the second half of the last century. The methods of farming evolved and adopted by our forefathers for centuries were less injurious to the environment. People began to think of various alternative farmingsystemsbased on the protection of environment which in turn would increase the welfare of the humankind in various ways like clean and healthy foods, an ecology which is conducive to the survival of all the living and non-living things, low use of the non-renewable energy sources, etc. Many systems of farming evolved as an outcome of the efforts of many experts and laymen. However, organic farming is considered to be the best amongall of them because of its scientific approach and wider acceptance all over the world.

Organic farming means farming in the spirit of organic relationship. In nature, organic relationship is a pervasive phenomenon. Everythingis connectedwith everything else. Hence, organic farmingis not mere non-chemicalism in agriculture. Since, organic farmingmeans placingfarmingonintegral relationship, wehave to know therelationship between soil-water and plant; betweensoilandsoil microbes andwasteproducts;between the plant and animal kingdom of which the apex animal is the human being; between agriculture and forestry; between soil, water and atmosphere etc.It is the totality of the relationship that is the bedrock of organic farming. However, the understanding of this totality of relationship is not sufficient for success in organic farming. Understanding the local specificity in respect of each of these aspects of these multiple relationship is also important (Pal, 2006).

Introduction

Pulses are pivotal and integral component of Indian agriculture and are excellent crops for natural resources management, environment security, crop diversification consequently for viable agriculture. India contributes 25 percent of the global production but has to import pulses to the home to the tune of 3.5mt every year to meet domestic requirement. In spite of largest area for chickpea, pigeon pea, lentil, dry beans & total pulses in the world, India’s’position in average productivity has never been decent i.e.25^th rank in chickpea, 19^th in Pea & 98^th in total pulses. This indicates that except chick pea & pigeon pea, the average productivity of the country is significantly lower than average yield of the world. To make India self sufficient in pulse production, the productivity level has to increase more than1200 kg/ha. by 2020. This gigantic task needs rigorous development & promotional efforts to transfer agro-technology packages in crop improvement and crop management, which are capable of doubling the present level of productivity Nanda et al. (1999) and Nanda

Pulse legumes are considered to be the best choice for intensification of predominant cereal-based systems. The studies conducted in different agro-climatic zones under AICRP on cropping systems have revealed that the productivity of existing cropping-systems can be enhanced by the inclusion of legumes during summer or as catch crop, or in intercropping systems (Gangwar et al., 2009). Further, these food legumes also serve as a feed crop in many farming systems and fetch higher prices compared to cereals and are increasingly being grown to supplement farmers’ incomes (Gouda et al., 1999). Although pulse legumes have many desirable characteristics in terms of increasing system’s productivity, raising nutritional standards and environmental benefits, in most countries of the world they are considered secondary crops. Globally, the harvested area under pulse crops is about one-tenth of the harvested area under all cereal crops. In view of the important and diverse role played by pulses in the farming systems and in the diets of the poor population, this chapter presents the global trade scenario in pulses followed by pulses production and trade opportunities in India. An attempt is also made to highlight the major concerns and to meet the future challenges in production and trade of pulses in India.

In the post-green revolution period, the incessant rice-rice/wheat crop rotation has undoubtedly made the country surplus in cereal production but has marginalized pulses. This has raised serious concern about sustainability of the production system. Recognizing the importance of pulses for meeting dietary requirements of vast vegetarian population on one hand and their role in improving soil health and conserving natural resources on the other, the efforts were made to develop high yielding, short duration and disease resistant varieties of different pulse crops which can help in diversification and intensification of popular cropping systems. As a result, several new cropping systems have been designed, developed and advocated for rainfed and irrigated areas.

Pulses play an important role in improving the soil health through biological nitrogen fixation. These crops also help to conserve natural resources and therefore help to conserve natural resources and sustain the agricultural productivity. With almost one-fourth population below the poverty line, the recent steep hike in prices has made the availability of pulses for this section of society even more difficult, thus, further jeopardizing both food and nutritional security.

7.1 Economics and Valuation of ghgs emissions

Since the late 20^th century, it has been largely accepted that cause of high concentration of GHGs in atmosphere is induced by human activities. Greenhouse gas emissions and related climate change has opened up debate on overall economic losses and ways to reduce these loses. Moreover, apart from curbing monetary losses; the global political leaders as well as reputed economists are looking towards making money by saving the emissions. Recently, the researchers have started to emphasize on the actual value added to the ecosystem by curbing emissions, discrete of the economic benefits. This section will discuss the economics and ecosystem services related to the management of GHG emissions.

Origin

The initiative to curb the emissions started in 1992 with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The Convention took place from 3 to 14 June, 1992. The UNFCCC is an international environmental treaty designed to “stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system”. The UNFCCC had non-binding limits on greenhouse gas emissions for individual countries and the framework was only meant for formulating precise international treaties (called “Protocols” or “Agreements”). It contained no execution mechanisms, however, it considered some negotiations and suggestions to formulate the action plans and regulation guidelines under UNFCCC to fulfill the objective of reduction of GHG emissions to the desired level.

PV clad structures and hybrid devices for rural and agricultural applications have been developed after considering different design aspects, climatic parameters, solar radiation availability on different planes, heat transfer coefficients, performance of PV in arid region and inter phasing of different components while keeping in view, practicality, application and ease of operation. Performance of the developed systems was studied, mathematical model developed and energy savings worked out for techno-economic considerations. The chronology and details of the developed PV structures and hybrid devices are as follows:

Green structure for environmental control

First of all a Quonset type environment control structure having a length of 5.3 m and width 4 m was fabricated with angle iron and iron rods and it was covered by agro-net (75%) having surface area of about 55 m². The structure having a volume of 33 m³ was fixed with long side along east west direction and had provisions for incorporation of misting unit on west side and a door on east.

Background and Technology intervention

Instead of open channel irrigation, intervention of PVC pipeline system using gravitational hydraulic pressure can convey efficient water without the use of power. This will reduce conveyance loss and improve timely and equitable distribution of water to all farmers. As large number of open wells with pump sets are available, uninterrupted power supply is not available for on time irrigation during summer seasons. During such times, savings from tank water will be more helpful allowing the farmer to manage groundwater greatly.

3.1 Overview of pyrolysis technology

Pyrolysis is a process derived from the Ancient Greek words “pyro” meaning f ire and “lysis” meaning separation, which means separating by using heat or fire. This is a thermochemical conversion process that converts biomass into a useful intermediate liquid product, which can be further transformed into a hydrocarbon biofuel, oxygenated fuel additive, or substitute for petrochemicals. Pyrolysis is similar or overlapping with other thermochemical processes such as cracking, carbonization, torrefaction, destructive distillation, dry distillation, and thermolysis. It is not related to gasification, which involves chemical reactions with a gasification medium.

5.1 Introduction

Today, energy distribution and environmental issues have developed into international threats. Demand for alternative fuels increases every day due to rapid population growth, rising living standards, and economical sustainability. With its massive population, India has become the fourth largest energy consumer country in the world after the United States, China, and Russia. Because most nations use fossil fuels to fulfill their energy demands, they create negative impacts on the environment including raising global temperatures, pollution, acid rain, and other effects. As such, the quest for alternative fuels derived from renewable resources has captured significant attention throughout the world¹. Biomass as a renewable energy sources is an important asset for achieving economic development is due to the availability of biomass at a low cost, a good conversion efficiency, the addition of jobs, and an increase in the biodiversity^2,3. Typically, biomass is composed of cellulose (40-50%), hemicelluloses (25-35%), and lignin (15-30%). Large amount of resources for biomass are available such as woody biomass, crop residues and their by-products, food processing waste, municipal solid waste, aquatic plant etc.

In the present context, pyrolysis process has been received a remarkable identity as a potential method for the conversion of any organic biomass into valuable energy rich products due to its simple in operation and also required a reasonable cost for conversion process. Pyrolysis is the thermal decomposition of any organic material at a specific temperature in absence of air/oxygen; the process ends with three resulting products, namely liquid (bio-oil), solid (biochar), and syngases⁴. Recently, biooil produced through pyrolysis process and further it up grading has been attracted a significant attention due to its major use as biofuel and as a precursor material for making chemicals⁵. The pyrolysis process also classified in three different types as per its operating conditions; slow, fast and flash pyrolysis.

8.1 General

The chapter discusses various aspects of pyrolyzer design, including reactor types, operating conditions, heating methods, feedstock characteristics, and process optimization. It also explores performance evaluation methods to assess pyrolyzer efficiency, product yield, biochar quality, and energy consumption. The information presented in this chapter aims to provide researchers, engineers, and practitioners with valuable insights into pyrolyzer design and performance evaluation for efficient and sustainable biomass conversion.

1.1 Definition and Scope of GLP
GLP refers to a set of standards that govern the organizational processes, personnel responsibilities, and conditions under which laboratory studies are conducted. It aims to regulate research environments and ensure the generation of high-quality, traceable, and reproducible results. The scope of GLP encompasses a wide range of scientific fields including pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, veterinary products, and environmental safety assessments. Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) regulations were developed by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and well adopted by regulatory agencies world-wide. The primary objective of GLP is to promote high standards of accuracy and integrity in non-clinical research to protect human health and the environment.
1.2 Principles of GLP
The fundamental principles of GLP include:
• Study Planning and Protocol Development: Every study must have a clear plan and defined objectives, which should be outlined in a comprehensive protocol.

Biofertilizers are one of the important components of organic farming and sustainable agriculture. Awareness among farmers is increasing on the biological fertilizers. But, the success of biofertilizer inoculation depends on the quality of the inoculant used. Because farmers are unable to judge the quality of the inoculants at the time of purchase or even at use. The inoculant producers are negligent to institute quality control programmes. Unfortunately much of the inoculant produced in the world today is relatively of poor quality. In such situation maintaining high quality inoculant products depend on the internal implementation of effective quality control systems by manufacturer. A major goal of a quality standard is to control the quality of inoculant to be used in any country.

The organic quality is based on standards, inspection, certification and accreditation. All organic food is produced and handled according to strict rules called ‘Organic Standards’. Organic standards do not define a quality status which can be measured in the final products (e.g. quantity of pesticides residues, heavy metals, etc). They define the way of production (e.g. that no chemical pesticides and fertiliser are used).

Quality Control addresses the standards and management practices required to ensure reliable and effective biofertilizer products. It introduces general quality concepts, quality-control parameters, microbial functions, and properties of microbial products. The chapter then explains quality-management procedures for important biofertilizer groups, including Rhizobium, nonsymbiotic nitrogen fixers, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, and phosphate-solubilizing bacteria. Quality-control measures are linked to product performance, consistency, storage, and application suitability. By emphasizing systematic assessment and management, the chapter highlights why quality assurance is essential for maintaining viable microbial populations and delivering predictable agricultural benefits from biofertilizers and related biological inputs. across production and distribution systems effectively today.

Introduction

It is necessary to ascertain the quality of irrigation water so as to gauge the possible effects of this water on the soil. The irrigation water often results in water logging, salinity and alkalinity problems. It is therefore very important to know its quality. Following are the basic criteria or characteristics on which irrigation water quality is judged.

1. Presence of total soluble salts in irrigation water.
2. Proportion of carbonates and bicarbonates in relation to calcium and magnesium in irrigation water.
3. Proportion of sodium in relation to other cations in irrigation water.
4. Concentration of specific ions in irrigation water.

Several parameters are employed to judge the quality of irrigation waters No parameter in complete in judging the quality of irrigation water. Further the quality of water should be judged by considering the crop and soil factors. Any judgment without considering the above factors may not be useful. Researchers devised many parameters by following above said criteria. Some of the commonly adopted parameters used to judge the quality of irrigation water are:

Water used for irrigation contain some salts, but quantities and kinds vary greatly depending on the source of water. Since sodic status of soils can be greatly influenced by salts in irrigation waters, successful irrigation practices require the evaluation system to judge irrigation water quality and methods employed. The actual damage done by salt to plants or soils depends on the concentration in soil solution rather than the quality of irrigation water applied. Thus, the use of some water source for irrigation might lead to severe salt problem in soils where drainage is restricted.

Criteria for evaluation of irrigation water

Various criteria considered in evaluating the quality of irrigation water are:

1. Salinity hazard

The most satisfactory method for rating the salt content of irrigation water involves measuring electrical conductivity. Various conductivity limits have been proposed to indicate the degree of salinity problems that might be anticipated with use of irrigation water on crops. There are four classes of salinity hazard such as C₁, C₂, C₃, and C₄.

However, its availability is not uniform across the planet, and the growing demand for freshwater in the face of climate change, population growth, and industrial development has raised serious concerns about the future of water resources. In 2024, the global water landscape presents both challenges and opportunities, shaped by shifting environmental patterns, technological advances, and policy responses to water scarcity. Water resources refer to the natural sources of water that can be utilized for various purposes, including water supply. Approximately 97% of the Earth’s water is saline, found primarily in oceans, while only about 2.5% is fresh water, but only a small portion of this is accessible. The majority of freshwater is locked in glaciers, ice caps, and deep underground aquifers. Less than 1% of Earth’s freshwater are readily available in rivers, lakes, and accessible groundwater for human use. Of this small fraction, nearly two-thirds is locked in glaciers and polar ice caps. The remaining unfrozen fresh water exists predominantly as groundwater, with only a small percentage available as surface water in rivers, lakes, and atmospheric moisture. The primary natural sources of freshwater include surface water, underflow in riverbeds, groundwater, and frozen water in glaciers. In addition to these, artificial sources such as treated wastewater (reclaimed water) and desalinated seawater are increasingly being used to supplement the global freshwater supply, particularly in regions facing water scarcity. As agriculture accounts for approximately 70% of global freshwater withdrawals, the management and quality of irrigation water are vital for sustaining food production and maintaining the health of ecosystems. Water is essential not only for basic plant functions, such as photosynthesis and nutrient absorption, but also for controlling temperature and supporting soil structure. In regions where rainfall is insufficient or irregular, irrigation provides a reliable source of water to meet the needs of crops throughout their growth cycle.

The quality of irrigation water has a direct influence on soil properties, crop growth and the long-term sustainability of irrigated agriculture. Water containing excessive salts or undesirable proportions of specific ions can create salinity, sodicity and other soil-related problems. This chapter presents the major criteria used for evaluating irrigation water quality. Salinity hazard is considered as an important indicator of the potential for salt accumulation in the soil and consequent restrictions on plant water uptake. Sodium hazard is examined because excessive sodium can adversely affect soil structure and permeability. The chapter also considers the salt index as a measure relevant to the evaluation of irrigation water. Bicarbonate hazard is discussed in relation to the chemical behaviour of irrigation water and its potential effects on soil conditions. Magnesium hazard is another important consideration in assessing the suitability of water for irrigation. By bringing these criteria together, the chapter provides a framework for evaluating irrigation water before application. Proper assessment of water quality is essential for selecting appropriate management practices and preventing long-term degradation of irrigated soils.

Seed in agriculture recognized as one of the most vital and crucial input in agriculture ever since the human kind has started tilling the land to produce the food for his existences. Seed technologist defined seed as matured fertilized ovule consisting of an intact embryo, endosperm and or cotyledon with protective covering (seed coat). A quality hybrid maize seed production system ensures design of the production technology which enables to maintain the healthy embryo, endosperm and /or cotyledon with protective covering. In fact the search of quality seed had acted as a major force to evolve the science of plant breeding. Ever since the farmers understood the importance of seed, they started trading the quality seed within community and now between geographies. Self-pollinated crops possess the natural mechanisms to maintain the intactness of genetic constitution of a seed during multiplication as there is very minimal chance of natural crossings. On the contrary, cross pollinated crops like maize requires special techniques in seed multiplication to maintain the genetic constitution of a F₁ hybrid. Hybrid Maize seed production techniques are well defined and are used by public and private sectors to produce the required hybrid seed in India. In this chapter, I will be highlighting the process, potential agro-climatic zones, hybrid maize seed production capacity and its future perspective in India. In addition, it also reviews the current system and possible strategic move in order to support the maize seed production system and steps required to meet future demand.

1. Introduction
Ecosystem Services (ES) are actually the benefits human beings derive from their interaction with nature (Reyers et al., 2013; Ernstson, 2013). Around 400 BC, Plato observed how important service provided to Attica by the forests and subsequent loss of forests lead to drying spring and soil erosion (Mooney and Ehrlich, 1997). Thus, the work of Plato highlights that how the people were even then aware of the critical services provided by nature much before the industrial revolution (Rapidel et al., 2011). These ES are categorised into mainly provisioning, supporting, regulating and cultural services as per the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MEA, 2005). In fact, the increasing population warrants more and more set of ES (Biggs et al., 2015). A combination of factors responsible for delivery of ES like geology, climate, ecosystem, management scenarios, society, techniques, skills etc. that led to ES in an agricultural ecosystem (Kroll et al., 2012; Swinton et al., 2007). The ordinary nature largely comprised of agricultural lands (i.e., intensive crops, species poor, artificial pasture) that covers around 37.4% of total Earths’ land surface (FAOSTAT, 2016; Leff et al., 2004). Converting large tract of pristine lands into agricultural land and other competing uses considered to be one of the main reasons for biodiversity loss and land degradation (Tilman et al., 2001). Thus, meeting the challenge of working with limited arable land to feed our population in an eco-friendly manner requires our proper understanding of processes/mechanisms involved in nutrient availability/dynamics including fixation/ release pattern and refining the best management practices (Kumar et al., 2022a). The production of food has been targeted at the cost of other ES like supporting, cultural and non-marketable provisioning services (Muller et al., 2016; Foley et al., 2005; MEA, 2005). There is complex interaction between ecosystem and societal changes in an agricultural landscape. One is intermittently connected to other. Thus, it requires thorough understanding of the processes and biophysical factors that affect ES research, in particular and social-ecosystem, in general (Reed
et al., 2013; Carpenter et al., 2006; Plieninger et al., 2013). The ES that contribute to the agricultural production are mostly linked to aspect of soil fertility, biological control as well as pollination (Bommarco et al., 2013; Duru et al., 2015).

Watershed management has emerged as an important research area in recent years. Understanding the morphology of the catchment is one of the widely used methods for watershed management. Morphometry is the measurement and mathematical analysis of the configuration of the earth’s surface, shape, and dimension of its landforms (Agarwal 1998; Obi Reddy et al., 2002). The study of watershed is very useful in drainage basin evaluation, silt erosion control, flood frequency analysis, watershed prioritization, natural resources management, and conservation (Waikar and Nilawar, 2014). The significance of morphometric analysis is highlighted in the basins that are either un-gauged or difficult to access. The morphometry is usually analyzed through measurement of linear, aerial, relief, gradient of channel network, and contributing ground slope of the basin (Magesh et al., 2012). The hydrological behavior of a basin can be easily determined through the areal parameters (Mahala, 2020.) The evolutionary history of any basin can be best understood through the implication of different relief morphometric measures of drainage basin (Sharma and Sarma, 2013).

GIS and RS techniques are proven convenient methods for morphometric characterization of sub-watersheds and prioritization of watersheds. As the satellite images provide a synoptic view of a large area, the RS and GIS methods become very useful in the analysis of drainage basin morphometry (Rai et al., 2017). Thus, the morphometric analysis using spatial techniques has emerged to be the fast and efficient method as compared to most of the conventional methods (Rao et al., 2010) such as manual extraction of drainage network and assigning the stream order from a published Survey of India topographic map. The present study aims at using remote sensing and GIS technology to compute various parameters of morphometric characteristics of the Chaliyar River basin.

Introduction
Quorum sensing is the system of communication tools between bacterial species and higher eukaryotic organisms. The Bacterial cell-to-cell communication depends on CCSM (cell-to-cell signaling molecule ) has four distinct characteristics where production mainly depends on the particular growth stages, under some physiological conditions with response to surrounding changes, deposition of CCSM is extracellular, which is recognized by its specific receptors, the response of CCSM was higher during the critical saturated condition and the most important one for CCSM production relay on the extended cellular response over the physiological changes during the metabolism and detoxification of CCSM (Winzer et al., 2002). The lower population capacity of bacteria cannot cause pathogenicity in higher organisms. They made the relation with neighboring communities to cause disease. The communication is within species or between similar groups. Before, bacteria were considered independent organisms, but now, quorumsensing molecules have disproved this, creating communication between communities and representing them as a group. Cell-to-cell communication was the signaling through intercellular or extracellular diffusion between or within the bacteria. The signaling led a similar group of bacteria to work together, symbolizing a more significant density. Commencement of quorum signaling at minute population density would mean elevating the range of bacterial density by signaling molecules in surroundings (Helman and Chernin, 2015). The signaling directly impacts the virulence factor of bacteria by the mechanism of pathogenicity and their metabolism. There would be large classes of quorumsensing molecules, among which gram-negative bacteria produce AI 1 as N-acyl homoserine lactone (AHLs) and gram-positive bacteria produce large peptide bonds. The AHL is compiled of the ring-like homoserine structure well attached by fatty acyl chains (Miller and Bassler, 2001). Auto induction is a term that varies from autogenous regulation. Autoregulation is the process by which gene expression is regulated by its product. In the case of auto induction, the production of diffusible sensing molecules occurs during bacterial growth in the environment. The quantity depends on the density of bacterial growth ( Maloy and Stewart, 1993; Fuqua et al., 1994). Fuqua et al., 1994 termed the quorum, which tells that the “minimal behavioral unit” is a bacterial quorum. The initiation of quorum sensing starts with the production of an autoinducer molecule called Pheromones, which regulates the population gene expression. Most bacteria produce autoinducers, which act as signaling molecules. Higher signaling molecules will directly rely on the higher population density of bacteria to cause the disease (Williams, 2007).
