Origin and Concept of SHGS
    
The origin of SHGs is from the brainchild of Grameen Bank of Bangladesh, which was founded by Mohammed Yunus.  SHGs were started and formed in 1975.  In India NABARD is initiated in 1986-87.  But the real effort was taken after 1991-92 from the linkage of SHGs with the banks.  A SHG is a small economically homogeneous affinity group of the rural poor voluntarily coming together to save small amount regularly, which are deposited in a common fund to meet members emergency needs and to provide collateral free loans decided by the group (Jha 2000).  They have been recognized as useful tool to help the poor and as an alternative mechanism to meet the urgent credit needs of poor through thrift (Rao 2002) SHG is a media for the development of saving habit among the women (Rajamohan 2003).  SHGs enhance the equality of status of women as participants, decision-makers and beneficiaries in the democratic, economic, social and cultural spheres of life.  (Jain 2003).

Introduction

Introduction

Spatial variation structure of soil properties is a key input for digital soil mapping and generally determined through geostatistical techniques (Webster and Oliver 2007). In geostatistics, spatial variation is expressed by semivariogram ?(h) , which measures the average dissimilarity between data separated by a vector h. It is generally computed as half of the average squared difference between the components of data pairs:

One of the major goals in agricultural crop management is to achieve maximum yield with minimum investment while maintaining a good quality of the crop produce. Crop infestation due to insects, diseases, and weeds are some of the major factors responsible for loss in crop yield. Further, an efficient Precision Agriculture Crop Management System is one, which is capable of precisely detecting the crop yield indicators (or crop health parameters) at an early stage and can predict the yield at any point of time of the crop cycle.

Sensor is a physical device used to detect manifestations or variations in a process value and collect data in real time assessment mode for measuring and predicting system/device performance and finally analyzing it to attain a specific task or application. Sensor technology is now-a-days used for interdisciplinary applications for data collection, system analysis and monitoring.

1. Introduction
Precision farming, often referred to as precision agriculture, is an advanced agricultural management approach that leverages technology and data-driven strategies to optimize various aspects of farming operations. At its core, precision farming involves the precise measurement and control of variables like soil conditions, crop growth and environmental factors to enhance productivity, sustainability and resource efficiency. This approach encompasses use of a wide range of automated technologies, including Global Positioning System (GPS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, sensor networks and automated machinery.
The significance of precision farming lies in its potential to revolutionize agriculture by addressing sustainability and conservation of resources. Precision farming is able to tailor farming practices to specific field conditions. This sitespecific management approach minimizes resource wastage, incumbent costs and environmental hazards. It enhances crop management through real-time monitoring and data analysis. By the use of GPS fitted automated machinery, drones and robotic harvesters and advanced decision support system labour costs are reduced and efficiency is increased (Gebbers and Adamchuk, 2010).By employing soil sensors, and satellite imagery, farmers can gain valuable insights of soil moisture, nutrient levels and pest infestations which helps in irrigation scheduling and adequate fertilizer application (Srinivasan et al., 2019). In contemporary agriculture, the need for sensor-based approaches in soil management has become increasingly apparent. These approaches harness cuttingedge technology and data-driven solutions to optimize soil health, crop production and resource utilization. One of the primary advantages of sensor-based approaches is their ability to monitor soil moisture levels. Soil moisture sensors, such as those based on time-domain reflectometry (TDR) or capacitance technology, provide continuous data on soil moisture content at different depths (Dzikiti et al., 2012). In addition to monitoring moisture and nutrients, sensors can assess other vital soil parameters. Soil pH sensors help maintain the optimal pH level for crop growth, as soil pH can affect nutrient availability. Compaction sensors identify areas of soil compaction, allowing for targeted tillage practices to alleviate compaction and improve root growth. These are just a few examples of how physical parameter sensors can address soil health challenges, as documented in studies by Marchetti et al. (2018) which emphasizes the role of sensors in mitigating soil erosion. Chemical parameters sensors like soil nutrient sensors, such as ion-selective electrodes, can measure key nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. This information enables farmers to tailor their fertilization practices with pinpoint accuracy through variable rate technology (VRT) (Zhao et al., 2018). Moreover, sensor data can be integrated with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and global positioning systems (GPS) to create detailed soil maps, aiding in sitespecific management strategies.

Sensor is a device which converts environmental parameters into electrical signals. In the broad definition, it is a device, module, machine, or subsystem which is designed to detect events or changes in the environment and send the information to other electronics components. An actuator is a component of a machine which is responsible for moving and controlling a system. A microcontroller is a small computer on a single metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) integrated circuit (IC) chip. This chapter explains the microcontroller development boards and their components along with the classifications of sensors and actuators.

4.1 Classification of Sensors

The sensors can be classified on the basis of different areas as follows-

i. Classification based on Application

Sensors are chosen on the basis of application where they need to be implemented like Industrial process control, measurement and automation, Automobiles, Consumer electronics, Aircraft, Medical products etc. As with change in application the selection criteria changes, so application needs to be considered.

5.1. Emergence of Service Area Approach

During the five years ended 1985-86

Gross value added in agricultural sector: 2.70% per annum.

Share of agriculture in total net domestic product declined from 39.80% to 35.40%.

Food grains production increased from 133.30 million tons to 150.50 million tons by 18%

In contrast, there was 41% increase in outstanding level of credit for agriculture from rural lending agencies viz., Co-operatives, RRBs and CBs between June 1981 and June 1986.

Share of Haryana, Punjab and U.P. in total food grains production was around 38% accounted for 75% increase in food grains output.

However, their share in the total institutional credit was 22% only.

The earlier view was that the cultivated sesame originated from Ethiopia. But Bedigian and Harlen (1984) established evidence to indicate that sesame is native of India. In vedic period, liberal mention about Til (Gingelly seed) and Taila (Gingelly oil) are mentioned. The Charred seeds of Gingelly were extracted from Harappa (2500-1500 B.C).

The research setting is essential because it provides a contextual framework that helps to inform the researcher’s interpretation of the data. By understanding the characteristics and context of the research area, the researcher can more accurately conceptualize and interpret the data, leading to a more nuanced understanding of the implications and behavioural complexities of the individual and the larger community.

3.1 Introduction

In developing and in semi-developed countries, rural-urban migration is driven by the uneven distribution of employment, income-opportunities etc. (Skeldon, 1990). Rapid population growth, especially in rural areas, provides an important demographic backdrop to these rural-urban population shifts. Given the growing and well-known difficulties that are faced by the overall Indian population in f inding productive employment, it is important to study the characteristics of labors that migrate from rural-urban areas. Under this backdrop, attempts have been made in this study to examine the nature, pattern and determinants of rural urban migration and the spread of urban informal sector and the likely impact of rural-urban migration on agricultural productivity and efficiency.

Introduction

Shaping machine, shaping machine is a heavy commercial machine used for generating flat surfaces on the workpiece as per the requirement. It is specifically designed to give the desired shape to the workpiece which can be flat, horizontal, or vertical as per the requirement.

The shaper machine is a reciprocating type of machine (that is, the machine that converts the rotatory motion into the linear motion) in which the tool reciprocates with the forward and backward stroke removing the metal form of metal chips and turning the Metal workpiece into the desired shape.

India’s Northeast region — one of natural beauty and cultural richness — is both a mega-biodiversity area as well as a “hot-spot” for genetic erosion. The rural population is around 82 per cent and depends largely on agriculture and allied sectors for work and income security. The forests harbour 8000 out of the 15,000 species of flowering plants occurring in the country. Of about 1300 species of orchids reported from India, the Northeast has the highest concentration with about 700 species. The species richness is highest in Arunachal Pradesh where over 5000 flowering plants occur and the lowest in Tripura with 1600 species. Bamboo is the lifeline of the Northeast and 63 out of 136 species found in India occur in this region. Sadly, however, 25 species of bamboo fall under the rare and endangered category. The region is also home to the eri and muga silkworms. The yak and the mithun are unique animals which are threatened by the spread of non-edible invasive species like Lantana, Eupatorium and Mekenia. The cultural diversity of this region is well known, with 225 tribes out of 450 in the country living here. 

Summary

Reaching large-scale implementation should be the overriding objective of all projects that have successfully ISFM practices to share provide markets support them. All too often ISFM results are only reported in peer-reviewed journals that are not accessible outside the research community.
 
Funding agencies often fail to make the production of extension materials an integral and mandatory requirement of research projects.
Unfortunately, in the past, adoption of economically proven technology has often been poor. Some of the reasons include:

A lot of infrastructure in the form of sheep breeding or production facilities such as sheep breeding research stations with adequate number of animals have been established and research technologies generated. The research technologies generated have however not been fully adopted by State Animal Husbandry Departments in the field except in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Parts of Rajasthan because of artificial insemination under field conditions due to migratory and semi-migratory practices in sheep husbandry, illiteracy among sheep farmers, their prejudices and convictions and difficulties in the preservation and storage of ram semen and main power requirement.

There is need to study the factors associated with adoption and rejection of sheep rearing as a subsidiary occupation and to know the attitude and knowledge of rural people. So that measures could be suggested to bring greater adoption of sheep rearing. The present study was undertaken to reveal the knowledge and attitude of adopters and non-adopters towards sheep rearing with the identification of factors helping and hindering the adoption of sheep rearing enterprise.

This chapter deals with the review of problems, objectives, hypothesis, research methodology and summary of major findings and conclusions based upon them. In addition, recommendations have also been made to accelerate adoption of sheep rearing programme in the five villages of Block Rajouri, District Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir.

The present study was conducted to measure the knowledge and attitude of rural people towards sheep rearing and to find out the factors responsible for adoption and rejection of sheep rearing. Suitable measures are therefore suggested to bring greater adoption of sheep rearing in the hills of Jammu & Kashmir.

Sheet metals are used for the production of automobile bodies, utensils, almirah and cabinet appliances, etc.Sheet metal parts have many advantages, like they are less expensive, lighter in weight and can be modified into versatile shapes. Low-carbon steel is commonly used. The use of casting and machining is being replaced by metal stamping. The stamping press is a kind of machine tool in which most of the operations occur, and the sheet metal products which are obtained by the machine are called stampings.

The various adverse effects of Shifting cultivation, the need for its replacement have been widely discussed at various levels. It has been a matter of concern not only for the Government of India and the Planning Commission but also to the various state governments and the union territories of the region. Although considerable data on the extent of Shifting cultivation and its various adverse effects including its effect on agricultural production have been discussed in various forums, yet detailed scientific studies on shifting cultivation from various angles were not taken up until recently. The prevalence of shifting cultivation is so extensive in the region that it would not be possible to tackle the problem within a short period of time whatever, large the efforts may be. It will, thus, be necessary to approach the problem so that alternative systems of farming can be introduced in areas where the cycle of rotation has been greatly reduced.

Agriculture is an important economic activity for a large population of the developing world. The view that industrialization is the main hope of the developing countries has undergone remarkable changes in more recent times. Today, agriculture and rural development are viewed as the sine qua non of national development. A reorientation where in rural development is well balanced with industrial growth is now considered essential to correct serious imbalances in the economy, for equitable distribution of wealth and for social justice. It is against this background that increases in agricultural production in the developing world need to be viewed and evaluated.

Introduction

Shifting cultivation, developed over centuries of experience is known as “Swidden”, “Slash-and–burn agriculture”, “Rotational bush-fallow agriculture.’ or by a variety of local names; in India, it is commonly referred to as Jhum cultivation. This farming system is believed to have originated in the Neolithic period around 7000 B.C. This is the most primitive form of agriculture and is still common amongst the tribal people in various pockets. Shifting cultivation is mainly confined to medium to high rainfall zones between 100 meters and 2,000 meters above sea level. It is practised in three types of vegetation, such as forests, bush and grasslands.

1. Introduction

Arid lands, the “dry domains”, cover ~ 32 % of the continental surface of the world. This geographical region is defined by low precipitation and usually highly variable rainfall patterns (Heathcote, 1983; Groombridge, 1992; Watson et al., 1995). These lands are extremely diverse with respect to landforms, soils, fauna, flora, water balance, human activities and the binding element of all arid lands.

Abstract
 
Within the time scale for soil formation, humans appeared to the planet within the last 1 million years. They shifted their lifestyle from hunter-gatherer to nomadic animal husbandry and finally to cultivation of domesticated crops only within the last 10,000 yrs. Earlier, these crops were cultured in a semi-nomadic style as land was plentiful, so when soil lost its productivity, people abandoned it in favor of new-land. Gradually, as land became scarcer and population exploded, agriculture evolved to continuous cropping of the same parcel of land. This discovered the major concern for soil health. As organic matter is key to soil health, humus is the last stage of organic matter decomposition. Humus is a complex aggregate of dark brown colored amorphous substances, which have originated during the decomposition of plant and animal residues by microorganisms, under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Humus and living microorganisms are connected by numerous ways which must be appreciated in order to understand the origin and nature of humus. Our attempt is to narrate the role of organic matter and vital role of microbes in humification process.

Abstract

Sabatayn basin is one of the two mature basins producing oil and gas in Yemen. Due to the recent decline in oil production, the exploration activities have been extensively concentrated mainly on these two basins (Sabatayn and Sayun-Masilah). So, this present study has been conducted to evaluate the exploration potential of the remaining trap areas within these mature basins. Fractured basement of reservoir becomes very attractive exploration target in Yemen recently, after the recent discoveries of basement fractured oil fields. As the evaluation of basement traps needs time and fund, to reduce the same, this research study uses a new technique which was devised with the help of Geoinformatics by analyzing the surface and subsurface lineaments effectively. In this study, a satellite image Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+7) based analysis was conducted for extracting surface lineaments, and for the subsurface lineaments, the basement lineaments were extracted from seismic, magnetic and gravity data. An orientation analysis of these surface and subsurface linear features was performed to detect the basic structural grains of the study area. The correlation between these structural grains and subsurface oil and gas traps was performed to understand the connectivity to the reservoirs. This paper discusses in detail about the same and the importance of using surface and subsurface lineament analysis for delineating hydrocarbon reservoirs in the study area.

Silage is preserved pasture. Fresh forage crops such as maize, grasses, legumes, wheat and lucerne can be preserved by ensiling. Silage is the green material produced by controlled fermentation of the green fodder crop retaining the high moisture content, which contain 20-40% dry matter.

Silage can be prepared from plants having thick stems and are generally not very suitable for hay making like sorghum, maize. Weeds can also be utilized along with main fodder crops for silage making. Silage making kills majority of weed seeds. It is highly palatable. The organic acids produced in the silage are similar to those normally produced in the digestive tract of the ruminants and therefore are used in the same manner.

1.1. Sericulture

Refer to rearing of silkworms for the production of raw silk.

Major activities are mulberry cultivation, silkworms spin silk cocoons and reeling the cocoons for unwinding the silk filament for value added benefits.

Bombyx mori is the most widely used. Silk-fiber is a protein produced from the silk-glands (modified labial glands) of silkworms.

The term “regression” literally means moving back towards the average. It was first introduced by the British biometrician Sir Francis Galton (1822-1911). in connection with the inheritance with the stature.

Regression analysis is a mathematical measure of the average relationship between two or more variables in terms of the original units of data.

In regression analysis, there are two types of variables. The variable whose value is influenced and is to be predicted, is known as the dependent (or predicted/ response explained) variable and the variable that influences the values of the dependent variable or is used for prediction purposes, is known as the independent (predictor/explanatory/ auxiliary/ regressor) variable.

7.1 Introduction

The integral calculus is concerned with the opeartion of “integration” which is the reverse process of differentiation. If f '(x) represents the differential coefficient of f '(x), then the problem of integration is to find f(x) from f '(x).

7.2 Integration of a Function Containing a Constant

If we integrate a function containing a constant factor, this factor must also be a factor of final integral.

Introduction

The term nitrogen use efficiency, (NUE) is widely used in research to cover problems in use of N in crop production systems. It describes N input/output ratio at different scales starting from farm levels to regional levels. An analysis of of NUE is helpful to analyze possible options for improving NUE in different crops and cropping systems. NUE at crop scale may be defined as the ratio between the yield and the N uptake by the crop. This ratio is sometimes called as the physiological NUE or utilization efficiency. High NUE can be achieved by high harvest index and a high productivity of dry matter per unit N uptake. The second component of NUE is the ratio of plant N uptake to the potentially available N. This ratio is called uptake efficiency or available N use efficiency. Enhancing the uptake efficiency of the crop is possible through enhancing the physiological uptake efficiency of the roots, enhancing root length density and matching the N supply and demand of a particular crop.

Modeling is heart of hydroinformatics. Simulation modeling became integrated part of modern science to justify feasibility of selected option among various competitive alternatives. Simulation modeling is a tool to evaluate the performance of a system, existing or proposed, under different configurations of interest and over long periods of real time. This chapter describes basic concepts, model simulation, model variables, modeling process, model performance etc. in brief.

Introduction

Crop models can be broadly classified into two categories: dynamic or process-based crop simulation models (CSMs), and reduced form statistical models. Since simulation models are based on various plant-related processes, they develop or alter in tandem with plant growth (Chetty 2009); as a result, they are inherently nonlinear (Olmstead 2009). To run, calibrate, and validate, they require a significant amount of date input. However, statistical models are helpful in situations where there is a lack of data because they describe the relationships between a subset of variables while keeping the others constant. (Chetty 2009).

26.1 Introduction

In a single equation model, the dependent variable Y is expressed as a linear function of one or more explanatory variables (say X1 , X2 , ... XK ). In such models, an implicate assumption is that the cause and effect relationship between (Y, Xs) is unidirectional. Here explanatory variables are the cause and the dependent variable Y is the effect.

However, there are some situations where two way flow of influence among economic variables exists. Thus one economic variable affects other economic variables and in turn is affected by them. Thus, in the regression of money M on the rate of interest r, the single-equation method assumes implicitly that the rate of interest r is fixed and it is tried to find out the response of money demanded when the level of interest rate is changed.

Mamata Banerjee has raised the important issue of land use and acquisition for public, political, professional and media debate. With increasing population pressure on land, this issue deserves careful consideration and rational discussion. The Singur dilemma in a wider sense relates to both land use policy and norms of compensation for land acquired by government for non-farm purposes. Land conflicts are also spreading in other parts of our country, as far example where land is needed for establishing Special Economic Zones (SEZs). The Maharashtra Government has wisely adopted the policy of holding a referendum to seek the views of farmers and others who will be dispossessed of their land for meeting the needs of SEZs. Pro-active consultations will help to avoid difficulties later. Water conflicts are also affecting important irrigation projects. Land conflicts are likely to do the same and may affect the balanced growth of the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors of the economy. How can we deal with this situation in a manner which leads to a win-win outcome for all the stakeholders ?

To achieve effective results, it’s crucial to identify and apply suitable conservation structures based on the characteristics of the terrain. Choosing the right location for these structures is a vital part of ensuring their effectiveness and durability. This involves conducting thorough surveys using a combination of methods such as field observations, remote sensing, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to pinpoint the best sites for intervention. Site selection focuses on analyzing land features like slope gradient, precipitation patterns, soil composition, and existing land use. It aligns these factors with the specific conservation objectives—whether aimed at controlling erosion or enhancing soil quality—while also weighing the costs and benefits of various soil conservation techniques.
IMPORTANCE OF SITE SELECTION
The main goal of soil conservation structures—like check dams, contour bunds, percolation tanks, and gully plugs—is to minimize soil erosion, boost water retention, and enhance soil fertility. Their effectiveness largely depends on where they are placed. Poorly chosen sites can result in structural failure, inefficient water control, and negative environmental impacts. Hence, careful and precise site selection is crucial to ensure the success and long-term benefits of soil conservation initiatives.

One of the most critical factors in ensuring the efficient operation of an agro-processing facility is site selection, which involves evaluating potential locations based on several key parameters such as accessibility, availability of raw materials, labor availability, infrastructure, and proximity to markets. A well-chosen site can significantly reduce transportation costs, ensure a steady supply of inputs, and enhance the overall profitability of the enterprise.
Once the site is selected, the next crucial step is plant layout. A thoughtful and efficient layout maximizes space utilization, streamlines workflows, minimizes waste, and optimizes the use of resources such as water and energy. The layout should facilitate smooth movement of raw materials through various processing stages and ensure the safety of both workers and products. An ideal plant layout not only improves operational efficiency but also adheres to industry standards and regulatory requirements.Additionally, preparing a comprehensive project report is essential for securing financial backing and guiding the implementation of the project. The classification of the farming systems of developing regions may be based on the following criteria:

• Available natural resource base, including water, land, grazing areas and forest; climate, of which altitude is one important determinant; landscape, including slope; farm size, tenure and organization; and
• Dominant pattern of farm activities and household livelihoods, including field crops, livestock, trees, aquaculture, hunting and gathering, processing and off-farm activities; and taking into account the main technologies used, which determine the intensity of production and integration of crops, livestock and other activities.

Site-specific nutrient management (SSNM) is the dynamic, field-specific management of nutrients in a particular cropping season to optimize the supply and demand of nutrients according to their differences in cycling throughsoil–plantsystems(Sarkar etal.,2017).Thisnewmethodofnutrient recommendationsisprimarilybasedontheinitialnutrientstatus(INS)from thesoil andthecrop’sneedfornutrients toachieve thedesiredyield.

The apparent reasons for undesirable productivity under intensively cultivated areas are depletion of native nutrient reserves, emergence of multinutrient deficiencies, and consequent decline in factor productivity of applied nutrient (Dwivedi et al., 2006; Yadav, 1998; Yadav, 2003). Surveys conducted at PDFSR in different agro-climatic regions of Indo- Gangetic Plain indicated that in order to achieve previously attained yield levels, farmers have started applying greater doses of N than the recommended ones (Dwivedi et al., 2001; Sharma, 2003). Such indiscriminate use of N is likely to further worsen the nutrient imbalance in soil-plant systems, besides increasing the pest incidence, cost of production and environmental problems (Dwivedi et al., 2001). The annual productivity of rice - wheat could hardly exceed 9 t ha^-1 in the multilocation experiments on yield maximization (Dwivedi and Singh, 2011). Yet, it is most often thought of in relation to use of computer and satellite equipment, and does not require large farming operation. With a population of approximately 1.39 billion, rural areas are home to about 68.84% of the total population, constituting more than two-thirds (Census 2011, GoI). Traditional agricultural meteorology has diligently documented climate patterns, analyzed weather phenomena, and established empirical relationships between meteorological variables and crop yields. This foundational knowledge remains invaluable. However, the stark realities of the 21st century, dominated by the accelerating and often unpredictable impacts of climate change, necessitate a radical departure from conventional thinking. The comfortable reliance on historical data and linear projections is increasingly inadequate in a world characterized by unprecedented c limate variability, intensifying extreme weather events (as you‘ve extensively researched), and the urgent need for enhanced food security for a growing global population.
• The limitations of traditional agricultural meteorology become increasingly apparent when confronted with the complexities of climate change. For instance, relying solely on historical rainfall patterns for irrigation planning becomes precarious when those patterns are drastically altered by shifting climate regimes. Traditional pest and disease forecasting models, often based on established temperature and humidity thresholds, may fail to accurately predict outbreaks as these thresholds themselves are disrupted by climate anomalies. The need for real-time, localized, and predictive insights into the dynamic interplay between the atmosphere and agricultural systems has never been more critical.

The next generation of agricultural meteorologists stands at a pivotal juncture, tasked with leveraging advancements in diverse technological domains to revolutionize the field. Consider the sheer volume of data now available from a constellation of sources – weather satellites providing high-resolution global coverage, dense networks of ground-based sensors capturing hyperlocal environmental conditions, agricultural drones offering detailed field-level monitoring, and IoT devices collecting real-time soil and plant health parameters. Fertilizers have played a pivotal role in enhancing food grain production in India especially after the introduction of high yielding and fertilizer responsive crop varieties during the green revolution era. However, there are certain problems associated with fertilizers because of their relatively low nutrient use efficiency (NUE) or nutrient uptake by crops. The fertilizer use efficiency is 30-50% for N, 15-20% for P, 70-80% for K and 8-10% for S. In case of micronutrients, the use efficiency is only 1-2%. The low NUE is typically the result of higher release rate of fertilizers than the absorption rate by plants, and/or transformation of fertilizers/ nutrients to forms that are not bioavailable to crops.

Application of N and P fertilizers at levels exceeding plant requirements due to low acquisition efficiency leads to significant environmental consequences in many parts of the world due to losses, such as nitrate (NO₃^-) leaching, NH₃ volatilization, and nitrous oxide (N₂O) emission. Excessive use of fertilizer N affects the groundwater. Similarly, excessive use of N and P fertilizers leads to surface runoff which in turn causes eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems. These negative environmental consequences associated with fertilizer inputs further emphasize the need of technological approaches to improve nutrient management in modern agriculture. As such, there is great need in developing innovative fertilizers to minimize the losses of nutrients and increase their efficiencies.

In addition, current agricultural activities contribute up to 20-30% to the annual atmospheric emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs), such as methane (CH₄) and carbon dioxide (CO₂). Even higher contribution is being noted for N₂O (about 60%), which is a potent GHG and catalyst for stratospheric ozone depletion, with more than 300 times the global warming potential than CO₂. Its emission is closely related to mineral fertilizer input. High fertilization rates lead to N and P losses with negative impacts on atmospheric GHGs concentrations and water quality.

There is an urgent need to improve NUE in agricultural systems, and to manage biogeochemical cycles in a sustainable way. This includes the development and application of modern technology as alternatives to conventional fertilization. There is a need to reduce the use of fertilizers/nutrients in agricultural systems by increasing NUE. The recent development in smart fertilizer delivery systems including nanofertilizers or the new generation fertilizers is a good alternative to commercially available fertilizers to improve the NUE and enhance resource utilization. Smart fertilizers may be a solution to enhance food production and environmental quality.

SEM also generates the way to regulate bioenergy systems to facilitate the cost, performance, and energy conversion efficacy by utilising sensors, statistics and cloud computing (Fig 1). The integration of SEM with bioenergy is specifically relevant because of the variable and complicated nature of biomass feedstocks which include forest and agricultural residues, and food waste (Rodrigues et al., 2022, Duca and Tascano, 2022). The variations such as, moisture, quality and energy density show the effect on the efficiency in the production of bioenergy. Smart technologies are used to monitor as well as optimize the energy production along with the real-time fluctuations in response to the demand, feedstock availability and its supply (Hao et al., 2022)

The objective of this chapter is to discuss the development of sensor nodes to monitor the growth of flower plants through XBee and internet of things. The system comprises of three sections- sensor nodes, local server and main server. Sensor nodes communicate to local server with XBee and then local server communicates the same data to main server through IoT.Fig.11.1 shows the generalized block diagram, sensor node is to be implemented on each flower pot and communicating to local and main server.
