Abstract

The paper presents findings of a field study to determine the agricultural and socio-economic impact of climate change on the mountain farmers’ apple economy. The study investigates the positive and negative effects of climate change on mountain farmers’ economy. It revealed how mountain farmers in a valley were forced to abandon apple farming which destroyed their farm economy and at the same time how same climate change brought new economic opportunities. The study findings also indicate that opportunities brought by climate change seem to have a time scale. This research attempts to piece together evidence and aims to enhance our understanding of climate change impacts as observed by farming communities at very local levels. The growing threat of global warming and its effects and prevailing obscurities about the future of agriculture are all addressed in this investigation.

Global agricultural research, an essential field in ensuring food security and sustainable development, is heavily influenced by the academic and publishing ecosystems in Europe and North America. This chapter examines the challenges faced by researchers from developing regions, focusing on limited representation in editorial boards, barriers to accessing high-impact journals, and the overarching dominance of Western institutions (Fig. 9.1).
These issues underscore the need for greater inclusivity and recognition of regional expertise to foster a more equitable global research landscape.
9.1. Dominance of Europe and North America in Agricultural Research
Publishing
The dominance of Europe and North America in agricultural research publishing is evident from the distribution of international journals in agriculture and allied disciplines. Approximately 75% of these journals originate from these regions. Breaking this down further:
• Europe accounts for 43.6% of international journals, with leading contributors including the United Kingdom (14.1%), the Netherlands (8.5%), Germany (6.2%), France (4.3%), Italy (3.5%), and other European countries (7.0%).
• North America contributes 31.4%, with the United States alone publishing 28.5% and Canada accounting for 2.9%.

The word administration is derived from Latin word Ad + Minister means “to care for” or look after people / to manage affairs.

Why Study Management Theory
Theories are perspectives with which people make sense of their world experiences. A theory is a coherent group of assumptions put forth to explain the relationship between two or more observable facts.
    i.    Theories provide a stable focus for understanding what we experience. A theory provides criteria for determining what is relevant.
    ii.    Theories enable us to communicate efficiently and thus move into more and more complex relationships with other people.
    iii.    Theories make it possible indeed, challenge us-to keep learning about our world.

Adoption

Adoption is a decision to make full use of an innovation as the best course of action available.

Steps in adoption process

Ryan and Gross (1943) were probably the first to recognize that the adoption of a new idea consisted of stages. They distinguished between awareness of hybrid seed cron conviction of its usefulness, trial acceptance and complete adoption of the innovation.

Adoption is essentially a decision making process. According to Johnson and Haver (1955), decision making involves the following steps.

Introduction

Innovation as a new idea, method, or object may be developed by research or by a farmer. Diffusion is a special type of communication on innovations. The proper use of innovation is called adoption. Communication is different from diffusion in the sense that communication covers all types of messages whereas diffusion is concerned with a message of new ideas. The extension workers need to understand the meaning of diffusion, adoption processes, innovation, etc. by which farmers accept new ideas. Adoption is a sequence of thoughts and actions which an individual goes through before s/he finally adopts a new idea. The adoption process is a mental process for passing the new idea to final adoption. In the diffusion process, the new idea spreads from its source of invention or creation to its ultimate users or adopters. Perception is an activity through which an individual becomes aware of objects around oneself and of events taking place.

Elements in the Diffusion of Innovations

The four main elements in the diffusion of innovations are innovation, communication channels, time, and social systems.

The Innovation

Innovation is a new idea expressed in terms of knowledge, persuasion of decision for adoption. The perceived attributes of innovations are relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, and observability.

Relative advantage: The innovation should have a relative advantage over the existing ideas in terms of economic and social-prestige factors, convenience, and satisfaction. The advantage can be influenced by providing various incentives.

Compatibility: The innovation should be compatible with the socio-cultural values and beliefs of people.

In rural development, the sole aim is to transfer the technology for better living of people. The process by which the technology is transferred to users is called Transfer of Technology. Transfer of technology falls in the domain of adoption and diffusion. Therefore, it is necessary to understand adoption and its related issues. Adoption of sustainable agricultural practices is relatively difficult as people do not find newness in it. The transfer of technology is explained in terms of technology movement from place of generation to the hands of the users.

Introduction

Rice is considered as the most important crop of India both in terms of area as well as value of output. It is estimated to contribute about 2.5 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of India and provides employment to a large work force in crop production and in paddy processing.

According to Reinsurance Company ‘Munich Re (2001), costs associated with natural disasters has gone up 14 fold since the 1950. Every year from 1991 to 2001, an average of 211 million people in the world were killed or affected by natural disaster. Described as one of the “Worst Disasters” in recent history the Tsunami travelled 4,500 km across the Indian Ocean in a period of about seven hours causing damage to twelve countries including Sri Lanka, India and Thailand most dramatically impacted, The FAO estimates that in the countries hardest hit by the disaster (Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Maldives, India and Thailand), a total of 47,000 ha of agricultural land has been damaged (FAO, 2005).

Introduction

The most significant commercially grown fruit crop in the country is the mango (Mangifera indica L.), which belongs to the Anacardiaceae family. It’s known as the “king of fruits.” Mango cultivars can be found in the greatest variety in India. Mango farming is thought to have begun in South East Asia. Since about 6,000 years ago, mango has been grown in south Asia.Mango is native to South Asia, from where it has been distributed worldwide to become one of the most cultivated fruits in the tropics.

The major mango-growing states are Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. Andhra Pradesh rank 1st in area, whereas Uttar Pradesh rank 1st in production and productivity. Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Gujarat together contribute for about 82% of the total production in India.

India to become the second largest fruit producer in the world, after china, with a production of 102481 thousands metric tonnes of fruits from an area of 6930 thousands hectares in 2020-21.The fruit is grown in India, the total area under mango cultivation was 2317 thousand hectare with an annual production of 20386 thousand metric tonnes.(NHB 2020-21).

Mango is well adopted in tropical and sub-tropical climates but it can be grown up to 1,100 meters above sea-level. There should not be humidity, rain or frost during flowering. The temperature between 24 and 270C is ideal for its cultivation. Higher temperature during fruit development and maturity gives better quality fruits. The areas expressed frequent showers and high humidity is prone to many pests and diseases. Thus it can grow best in regions with a rainfall between 25cm and 250 cm. Regions having bright sunny days and moderate humidity during flowering is ideal for mango growing.The farmers 92.20 per cent had problems of pests in their mango trees. The most common pests were the mango seed weevil 48.10 per cent, fruit fly 36.40 per cent, trips 1.30 per cent, aphids 1.30 per cent and the most common diseases were the powdery mildew 46.80 per cent, anthracnose 18.20 per cent and scab 2.60 per cent (Gitonga,2010).

Theworld fashioned and occupied by three fourth of the water. Fisheries activities are an indispensable part in the life and livelihood of the peoples. Aquaculture is the most important role for the upward economic strengthening and social mobility. Most of the inland fish farmers are poor due to lack of financial resource. Because of the poor production through the inland fish culture, the most of the farmers in Tamilnadu are undertaking composite fish culture technology. Demand for fish is rapidly increasing due to the growing population and awareness about the superiority of fish to other meats. The marine and freshwater sectors growth were 2.5 and 8 per cent respectively (Ayyapan and Diwan, 2004).

Introduction

Among the various vegetable crops, tomato (Lycopersicurn esculentum) is one of the important and popular vegetable and plays an important role in balanced nutrition and hence it is called as `poorman’s orange’. Tomato fruits can be seen in the market round the year. In India, tomato occupies an area of 2,90,279 ha with the productivity of 15.85 t/ha and production of 46,03,446 tonnes (www.nhb.gov.in). Among the different districts of Tamil Nadu, Salem district has an area of about 6311 hectares under tomato with 17,359 tonnes of production. Pest management is one of the important dimensions in cultivating tomato crop that needs significant attention. The objective of pest management technologies are maximize pest control in terms of overall economical, social and environmental values. In order to restore ecological balance, it is necessary to integrate all the available pest management techniques in the most compatible manner with the least use of chemicals which is the principle of pest management. ‘Pest management technology’ utilizes all suitable techniques and methods in a compatible manner as possible and maintains the pest population below their economic injury levels given by Bikramjit et al. (2007).

Sustainable agriculture requires sincere attempt by the farmers to be sustainable in their approach. The practices are neither new nor difficult. But the minds of the farmers are so much inclined to inorganic farming that it is not so easy to divert their minds for sustainable agriculture.

Biomedical signals provide valuable information about physiological conditions and support continuous health monitoring. This chapter introduces ECG, EEG, EMG, PPG, respiratory and blood-pressure signals and examines the challenges associated with their acquisition and interpretation. It discusses noise removal, filtering, normalization, resampling and artifact correction before presenting time-domain, frequency-domain, time–frequency, wavelet and nonlinear feature-extraction methods. Feature selection and dimensionality reduction are considered in relation to model accuracy and clinical interpretability. 6.1 INTRODUCTION

Besides simple analysis, GIS is useful to do advanced analysis like network analysis, spatial analysis, 3D analysis and modeling. Different softwares are available to perform such analysis and the above mentioned analysis is done in separate modules of the softwares.

6.2 NETWORK ANALYSIS

Network consists of well connected linear features. Roads, railway line, water distribution system, sewer line, streams are some of the examples of networks. These networks consists of nodes and arcs with designated directions and connection with other linear features. Networks are topology based with attributes for the flow of objects like traffic. Road network will be considered for explaining network analysis.

Road map is digitised with nodes and arcs. Signals, accidents are represented as points. Road is represented as line and two or more roads intersect at nodes. Attributes are added to the nodes and lines. Dynamic segmentation model is used for network analysis. It is built on lines of network. In road network analysis, attributes for travel time, one way street, two way street, right turn, impedance are added to the nodes and arcs. A link is the line running between two nodes. Link impedance is the cost of passing through the link. Travel time is different in links in cities due to varying traffic at different locations. Time taken to pass through a known length of link may give the cost but the travel time in a link is not uniform because of varying speed designated in the link as 20 km per hour and 30 km per hour. Hence it is important to consider the length of link and also the travel time. If the speed limit is 20 miles per hour for a length of 2 miles, then the travel time is 6 minutes (2/20x60 minutes). Also tuning in the network is considered. A road may have a maximum of 12 possible turns excluding U turns. There are right turn, left turn, straight way for each road. Also U turn is possible. This turning takes different time depending on the signal. Straight way takes less time but left and right turn may require some more time. If signals is available then signal time should also be taken into account. Fig 6.1 show the possible turns in a road.

Machine learning algorithms, for example, can be trained on large datasets of weather, crop, and disease data to identify complex patterns and relationships that may not be apparent through conventional statistical analysis. In India, food processing is gaining importance as now it is being considered as profit industry. The increased demand for processed food in the domestic market and Indian foods getting popularized in the global market has put food processing industry on high priority list by the entrepreneurs. Accounting for about 32 percent of the country’s total food market, the food processing industry is one of the largest industries in India and is ranked fifth in terms of production, consumption and export. The total food production in India is likely to double in the next ten years with the country’s domestic food market estimated to reach US$ 258 billion by 2015. The food industry in India has been attracting a lot of attention from foreign investors in the area of processing, development of infrastructure for storage and transportation and retail marketing and scenario is changing rapidly.

Fusion is a well known entity in various fields (e.g. medical imaging, weapon detection, flood monitoring etc.) that surmises information originating from several modalities. This chapter is an attempt to assort the various image fusion techniques available for human face recognition and to put a review of the advancements being made by the different researchers. The various types of fusion those have been used or may be used for face recognition have also been discussed here.

The age-old struggle between crops and diseases has been a perpetual challenge for farmers and agricultural stakeholders worldwide. Weather patterns play a pivotal role in the development and spread of crop diseases, making it essential to integrate weather wisdom into crop disease management strategies. By analyzing historical and real-time weather data, farmers and agricultural experts can anticipate, prepare for, and respond to disease outbreaks more effectively, minimizing crop losses and ensuring food security. Effective crop disease management based on weather wisdom involves a three-pronged approach. It begins with caution, where historical climate data and disease surveillance reports are analyzed to identify potential correlations between weather patterns and disease outbreaks. This information helps farmers and agricultural experts to recognize early warning signs of disease susceptibility, such as temperature fluctuations, precipitation patterns, and humidity levels. For instance, excessive rainfall can lead to an increased risk of fungal diseases, while drought conditions can exacerbate bacterial diseases (Fig. 13.1). The confirmation phase involves closely monitoring real-time weather forecasts and disease surveillance data to detect early warning signs of an impending disease outbreak. Advanced technologies, such as satellite imaging and sensor-based monitoring systems, provide valuable insights into crop health and disease development. By combining these data streams, farmers and agricultural experts can confirm the presence of disease-causing pathogens and take targeted action to prevent their spread. Finally, a call to action is triggered, prompting farmers and agricultural stakeholders to implement integrated disease management strategies. These may include cultural practices, such as crop rotation and sanitation, biological controls, such as introducing beneficial microorganisms, and chemical controls, such as targeted fungicide applications. By leveraging weather wisdom, farmers can optimize their disease management strategies, reducing the reliance on chemical pesticides and minimizing environmental impact. By embracing weather wisdom, crop disease management can be transformed from a reactive to a proactive approach. Farmers and agricultural stakeholders can stay one step ahead of disease-causing pathogens, protecting their crops and ensuring a stable food supply. Approaches to Caution Farmers on Crop Diseases, Information Generation, and Communication using Mobile Technology To caution farmers on crop diseases, it is essential to adopt a multi-faceted approach that leverages mobile technology to generate and disseminate critical information. This approach should focus on empowering farmers with timely and accurate information, enabling them to take proactive measures to prevent and manage crop diseases. Firstly, a robust disease surveillance system should be established to monitor and track crop disease outbreaks in real-time. This can be achieved through a network of field scouts, extension agents, and research institutions that report disease incidence and severity to a central database. Mobile-based applications can be used to facilitate data collection, transmission, and analysis, ensuring that critical information is captured and disseminated promptly. Once disease outbreaks are detected, mobile technology can be harnessed to generate and disseminate alerts to farmers. This can be achieved through Short Message Service (SMS) or voice messages, which can be sent to farmers’ mobile phones, warning them of potential disease risks and providing advice on management strategies. Mobile-based applications can also be used to push disease alerts, advisories, and management recommendations to farmers, ensuring that they receive critical information in a timely and accessible manner. To enhance the effectiveness of these alerts, it is essential to ensure that they are tailored to the specific needs and contexts of farmers. This can be achieved

Age old practice of photography was taken with still camera in parallel direction, not aerially scan or snapping which really present wider prospective of any object or places in rearranging or planning skilfully in two dimensional working. Earlier aeroplane played a important role in over head condition to capture snaps but again accuracy and angle of camera limited the works because these photographs were diagonally or trigonally not matched the reality of ground.

Introduction

Although both maps and aerial photos present a “bird’s-eye” view of the earth, aerial photographs are NOT maps. Maps are orthogonal representations of the earth’s surface, meaning that they are directionally and geometrically accurate (at least within the limitations imposed by projecting a 3-dimensional object onto 2 dimensions). Aerial photos, on the other hand, display a high degree of radial distortion. That is, the topography is distorted, and until corrections are made for the distortion, measurements made from a photograph are not accurate. Nevertheless, aerial photographs are a powerful tool for studying the earth’s environment. 

Because most GISs can correct for radial distortion, aerial photographs are an excellent data source for many types of projects, especially those that require spatial data from the same location at periodic intervals over a length of time. Typical applications include land use surveys and habitat analysis. 

This unit discusses benefits of aerial photography, applications, the different types of photography, and the integration of aerial photographs into GISs.

1. Introduction

Afghanistan imperiled by decades of war, is  now a country on the rebound. With the days of relative peace up on the Afghan people, resources are being gathered and projects put onto place, in an effort to revitalize the previously stagnant economy. The rehabilitation of the agricultural economy in Afghanistan depends to a large extent on whether Afghanistan’s Agricultural Sector will be able to recover from the effects of war, serious consecutive droughts and a multitude of endemic crop/ livestock diseases. Afghanistan is a pastoral country with more than 85 per cent of the land area incapable of growing even a narrow range of crops, thus being largely rangeland.  Agriculture produces food, provides food security, enhances crop production, generates cash incomes for rural and urban populations, provides fuel and transport, and produces value added goods which can have multiplier effects and creates a need for services.  Furthermore, agricultural diversity production and income provide year-round employment, and spread risk. Livestock also form a major capital reserve of farming households.

2.1Introduction

Agriculture includes both self-employment and wage employment. This require precise information about who does what. Majority of farmers have small Land holding and landless labourers. This needs understanding of activity performance of men and women. Gender-based division of labour is universal, but culture and community diversities cause differentiation. Gender, therefore, has to be recognized as the social characteristic that cuts across caste, class, occupation, age and ethnicity. It is gender that differentiates the roles, responsibilities, resources, constraints and opportunities of women and men in agriculture for which precise gender information is the need of the day. Building gender into agricultural development will lead to: Building inherent strength of women and men to mutually learn, Overcoming gender based prejudices etc.

Abstract
The village Kakching Khunou of Thoubal District, Manipur is found highly suitable for Watermelon cultivation. Mr. Thokchom Nganthoi Singh a young
farmer who is a novice in agri-business proved to be successful agri-business of watermelon in Kakching Khunou. The study noted that prominent extension approach was of farmer-to-farmer extension while venturing the enterprise. The total cost for cultivation of watermelon was around `50000-60000/- per Ha with a profit of ` 1,50,000/- per Ha. In three years (2016-18) the farmer mark as success in cultivation of watermelon and also started cultivating cucumber and other vegetable crops in his small farm successfully.

Agribusiness: A Dynamic Concept
Agribusiness, an ever-evolving concept since its introduction in the 1950s, encompasses a broad spectrum of business and management activities linked to agriculture. Downey and Erickson defined agribusiness as encompassing all activities undertaken by firms that supply inputs to the farming sector, produce agricultural products, and process, transport, finance, or market these products. Chait extended the definition to include agriculturally related businesses such as warehouses, wholesalers, processors, and retailers.
In developed countries, agribusiness is broadly defined as the total output from farm production and processing at both pre- and post-farm gate stages. In contrast, in developing nations like India, agribusiness is categorized into four distinct sub-sectors:

Rural youth are the future of the agricultural sector in the country. A rising number of rural youth are migrating to urban areas from villages in search of better employment as well as better life. They are migrating towards cities due to limited resources, weak infrastructure, and unemployment in rural areas. Thus, the number of young people in rural areas is falling and the exodus of rural youth means fewer small-scale farmers for today and tomorrow. Agribusiness may prove important tool to stop the exodus of rural youth from rural to urban areas. Agribusiness provides the various employment opportunities in the areas of agricultural inputs, crop production, agro chemicals, fruit and vegetable cultivation, agricultural marketing and processing of agricultural produce. Agribusiness helps in remunerative farming which increases the level of income, employment and living standard of people in rural India. The present paper will discuss the role and importance of agribusiness in attracting and retaining rural youth in farming.

Precision agriculture depends on information collected through ground sensors, satellites, IoT systems and other connected devices. However, these data sources differ in spatial resolution, timing, quality and technical compatibility. This chapter introduces a computational framework for acquiring, harmonizing and analysing heterogeneous agricultural data. Preprocessing methods address noise, missing values and inconsistencies, while machine learning, deep learning and ensemble models identify useful environmental, spectral and temporal patterns. Applications include crop-health assessment, soil-moisture estimation, yield prediction and climate-resilience planning. Edge and cloud computing support scalability and real-time operation. Integrating multiple data sources can improve model accuracy, robustness and the practical usefulness of intelligent farming systems.

Introduction
Agriculture is an age-old income generation activity in India. It plays a vital role in India’s economy. One in every two Indians relies on agriculture for livelihood. Over 58% of the rural households depend on agriculture as their principal means of livelihood. Over the period of time, the contribution of agriculture and allied sector in Gross Domestic Products (GDP) in India has declined to 14.4% in 2018- 19 from 51.8% in 1950-51. At current prices, the contributions of industry and services sector are 31.5%, and 54.1%, respectively as against the contributions of industry and services sector were 15.1% and 33.1%, respectively in 1950-51. This decline in share of agriculture and allied sector is result of the shift from traditional agricultural economy to industry and service sectors, this performance are very meagre if we consider the size of the employment in this sector. Presently, more than 50% of the total workforce of the country is employed in agricultural sector contributing to only 14.4% of GDP. With production of agriculture activity 26of $375.61 billion, India is 2nd larger producer of agriculture product in the world after China which has contribution of $991 billion in agriculture sector. GDP of industry sector is $560.97 billion and world rank is 6th. In services sector, India’s world rank is 8th and GDP is $1500 billion (FAENI, 2018- 19). Interestingly, contribution of agriculture sector in Indian economy is much higher (7.4%) than world’s average (6.4%), while contribution of industry and services sector is lower than world’s average (30% for industry sector and 63% for services sector).

ABSTRACT

The conventional agricultural extension service in India is mainly provided by extension workers visiting farmers to provide agricultural advisory services. This system of extension service provision faces a number of challenges including the few number of extension workers and limited resources. The effectiveness of an impact-driven, radio-based extension service delivery system that has been introduced in some rural areas of India. The system aims to enable extension workers to reach many farmers with minimum efforts. However little is known about the effectiveness of this new extension service delivery system. In rural areas, farmers have started sharing agricultural related information and best practices. Some farmers have also started to change their farming practices. This brings a new finding that farmers can adopt and practice easily what is aired by their fellow farmers in the community radio stations.

Poverty has been described as a situation of “pronounced deprivation in well being” and being poor as “to be hungry, to lack shelter and clothing, to be sick and not cared for, to be illiterate and not schooled. Poor people are particularly vulnerable to adverse events outside their control. They are often treated badly by institutions of the state and society and excluded from voice and power in those institutions.” Lack of access to resources is a unifying characteristic of poverty in all its manifestations. The poor lack ownership of or access to assets such as land, water, forest, dwelling units, credit, literacy, longevity, voice and capital-both physical and social. Those who are severely below the poverty line are largely involved in subsistence type activities for which they get exploitatively poor returns despite suffering extreme physical hardship and undertaking grave risks so as to earn a meager income. Since earnings are below even the margins of existence, expenditure and survival needs exceed income. This often results in the need to borrow small amounts of money at usurious interest rates of as much as 120 per cent per annum (Mehta, 1996) when borrowing is not possible, hunger is suffered. Their inability to change the power relationships results in scarcely available common resources (such as even drinking water) or public funds meant for poverty alleviation being misappropriated and diverted through manipulation by the locally powerful or corrupt. Since there are no mechanisms for grievance redressal this could result in social tension, despair or a combination thereof.

Abstract

Entrepreneurship essentially involves economic and dynamic activities, risk- assuming and idea generation that help in developing, organising and managing a business opportunity for profits. Entrepreneurship in agriculture is not merely confined to farm activities but also involves activities interlinked and interdependent with core and peripheral agricultural activities. Impediments in the pathway of agricultural entrepreneurship in West Bengal are characterised by fragmented landholding, low financial resources and thereby debt stickiness & dependence on short-term agricultural loan. Though disbursements of short-term credit have increased substantially, the rate of increase is low. For most farmers, insurance for financial or crop crisis is unheard or have hardly any implication. The paper tries to explain the performance of various agricultural insurance schemes in terms of coverage and the benefits being delivered in India and in West Bengal. The paper analyses whether the recipients consider the schemes as an effective risk mitigation tool or merely a habit of credit-dependence in West Bengal through a diffusion model. The paper concludes with the focus on possible entrepreneurial opportunities that may offer more customised agri-insurance policies, where regional disparities could be considered and individual interests be given little more importance.

The second post-Green Revolution phase (beginning the mid-1980s) was characterized by high input-use and decelerating productivity growth. In the present paper, the temporal and spatial variations in the productivity status of major crops in India have been analyzed using the TFPG estimates. SYNOPSIS

Until recently, agriculture was primarily valued for producing staple cereals. Today, there is increasing recognition that agriculture has an important role to play in improving nutrition, human health and environmental health. Helping agriculture successfully forge links with nutrition and health can enable the research, development and policy communities to more effectively address the looming challenges of hunger, malnutrition and agriculture-associated diseases. Already, there is growing momentum around the world to bring these sectors together to improve food and nutrition security of the world’s poorest people.

1. INTRODUCTION

During the past fifty years, the world has made substantial progress in improving the food security of millions of people. Using science and technology, agricultural extension and appropriate policies and incentives complemented with infrastructure, farmers, researchers and policymakers have worked together to increase the global production of cereals, cutting the proportion of hungry people from approximately one-third to one-sixth of the world population (Spielman and Pandya- Lorch 2010). Yet more needs to be done. Nearly one billion people still suffer from hunger. Micronutrient deficiencies affect billions more today and potentially in the long-term. Malnourishment in children’s first two years of life, for example, causes largely irreversible damage, impeding their physical growth and intellectual development, increasing their susceptibility to diseases such as diabetes and cancer and even drastically reducing their incomes as adults. Undernourished women are more likely to give birth to smaller babies, thereby creating an inter- generational trap of under nutrition and poverty.

While agriculture has traditionally been put to work to raise the productivity and production of staple crops, there is increasing recognition that agriculture is also key to improving nutrition security, individual health and environmental health. This nuanced understanding has come just in time, considering the looming challenges of hunger, malnutrition, climate change and its link to energy and resource scarcity and urbanization. Placing agriculture in this larger context may enable the global community to better address and cope with these challenges, whilst meeting the food and nutrition security needs of the world’s most vulnerable people.

Customized application development can deliver/fulfill the specialized and specific needs of the users as well as it provides user- friendly environment to the users. There have been applications developed in the past but now applications developed and coupled with the advantage of GIS technologies for various data-handling, spatial analyses and visualization under variable inputs and spatial scales is an innovative approach developed during recent years.The present work encompasses Spatial Agricultural Information and Decision Support System having five modules - Agro-socio-economic-information, Bio- Physical Information, Crop’s Information & Management, and Agriculture DSS Module. This system, developed in a GIS framework, allows managers and planners to rapidly assess land attributes and link these attributes with maps and related infrastructure. Hence, it can facilitate efficient use of existing resource information. The primary database of the software has a Database Update feature which can be utilized by the user using the software to integrate own data into the primary database of the software. With this integration, the software adapts to new data entered and will enable this data to be visualized in GIS platform. The software has been designed keeping in view the requirements of the departments like Department of Agriculture, Department of Land Records etc. In comparison with the commercial GIS applications, the commercial applications are not cost effective if the primary requirement is visualization enabling decision making and basic spatial analysis. The most features available on such software remain un-utilized or they cannot be used without having GIS knowledge. This application is suitable in such scenarios, providing a simple customizable platform for GIS visualization. This software application fits in and serves the line departments and in a way promoting the GIS in the mountainous terrain as it requires very basic or no GIS skill set to operate.
