This practical assignment is conceptualized and designed to acquire practical learning experience through various activities implemented by NGOs in improving the livelihood of the targeted group. The assignment also projects a clear picture about the objectives, structure, functioning and activities of NGOs.

PURPOSE

To make the students acquainted with the NGOs and their learning experience in rural development.

THEORETICAL ORIENTATION

A non-governmental organization (NGO) is a not-for-profit organization that is independent from states and international governmental organizations. They are usually funded by donations but some avoid formal funding altogether and are run primarily by volunteers. NGOs are highly diverse groups of organizations engaged in a wide range of activities, and take different forms in different parts of the world.

THEORETICAL ORIENTATION

The word “democracy” is derived from the Greek roots - ‘cracy’ meaning ‘rule of and ‘demos’ meaning ‘the people’. It is governance of the people, by the people, for the people. Rule by majority is, no doubt, an important feature of this system of governance; but the more important ingredient is rule by consultation - consultation between the people’s representatives on one hand and consultation with the officers on the other. ‘Decentralization’ means devolution of central authority among local units close to the areas served. Where authority is devolved by this process on people’s institution, it is ‘democratic decentralization’.

At the instance of the Prime Minister it was decided to give the process of the three-tier administration the strictly Indian name, “Panchayati Raj” which means a system of government. Panchayati Raj was conceived system of democratic local self-Government. Earlier, Mahatma Gandhi also advocated panchayati raj as the foundation of India’s political system, as a decentralized form of government in which each village would be responsible for its own affairs. The term for such a vision was Gram Swaraj (“village self-governance”). The institution of Panchayat represented not only the collective will, but also the collective wisdom of the entire rural community.

The Balwant Rai Mehta Committee, headed by M P Balwant Rai Mehta, was a committee appointed by the Government of India in January 1957 to examine the work of the Community Development Programme (1952) and the National Extension Service (1953) and to suggest measures for their better work. The committee recommended the establishment of the scheme of ‘democratic decentralisation’ which finally came to be known as 'Panchayati Raj' which would be a 3-tier system - 'Gram Panchayat' at the village level, Panchayat Samiti at the block level, and Zilla Parishad at the district level.

This practical assignment is dealt with the appropriate extension strategies and methodologies adopted by KVK and ATIC in disseminating proven agriculture information and technologies to farmers through delivery mechanisms.

10.1 Introduction
Having explored the advanced analytical techniques that allow us to extract meaningful insights and build predictive models from meteorological data, we now arrive at a crucial stage in the scientific process: communication and understanding. The chapter, “Visualization of Meteorological Data,” focuses on the art and science of transforming complex numerical datasets into insightful visual representations. In a field as inherently spatial and temporal as meteorology, effective visualization is not just about making pretty pictures;it is a fundamental tool for exploration, analysis, and the clear conveyance  of information about atmospheric phenomena (Fig. 10.1).
Consider the sheer volume and multifaceted nature of meteorological data. We grapple with variables spanning three spatial dimensions (and often more when considering altitude), evolving dynamically over time, and encompassing a wide array of physical quantities – temperature, pressure, wind vectors, humidity, precipitation rates, radiation fluxes, and more. Raw numbers and statistical summaries, while essential for quantitative analysis, often fail to reveal the intricate spatial patterns, temporal evolutions, and interrelationships that characterize weather and climate. This is where visualization steps in,
acting as a bridge between the abstract world of numerical data and our intuitive human capacity for visual pattern recognition.

These tools include automated time-stretching, audio wave alignment, and frame-by-frame adjustments, allowing editors to visually align audio waveforms with video frames for meticulous timing. Additionally, AIdriven tools, such as those found in software like Adobe Audition or Descript, can further streamline synchronization by automatically detecting and adjusting timing mismatches, saving time while improving accuracy.
Proper synchronization in video production ensures that the audio and visual elements are cohesively blended, enhancing storytelling and engaging the audience. For professionals, this attention to detail in syncing voice to video is essential for achieving high-quality, polished final products across various media.
This chapter provides an in-depth look at the tools and techniques for voice synchronization using advanced software, including Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Avid Media Composer, and Adobe Audition. The analysis of land use patterns has long been one of geography’s basic concerns. At first, it might appear as if agricultural land use is little affected by relative location, once the factor of a suitable market has been acknowledged. Indeed, the farmer does adapt his land use to site conditions, climate, land forms, and soils.

However, the effects of the market situation cannot be disposed of as easily as all that. Johann Heinrich Von Thunen (17831850), a German economist and estate owner of the early 19th century, developed a theory of agricultural location that is still worth considering.

This model is based on an econometric analysis of his estates in Mecklenburg, near Rostock in Germany. Most of the data used in explaining his theory were obtained by him through practical experience. He attempted to construct a theoretical model of land use pattern, giving a particular arrangement of towns and villages in a situation experienced in Mecklenburg.

The main aim of Von Thunen’s analysis was to show how and why agricultural land use varies with the distance from a market.

Wilcoxon Matched-pairs Test: The Wilcoxon Matched-pairs Test can be used if the research situations where two-related samples, i.e. case of matched pairs such as a study where husband and wife, or the output of two similar machines or some subjects are studied in context of before-after experiment, the magnitude of difference between matched values in both the directions are to be determined.

Walter Isard had given the location theory in 1956 vided publication entitled, Location and the Space Economy. Isard has modified the Loschian schema, in the attempt to make it more realistic. Isard linked location theory to the general theory of economics through the substitution principle.

In economic theory, capital can be substituted for labour, for example. Similarly, the selection of a manufacturing site from among alternative locations can be viewed as substituting expenditures among the various production factors such that the best site is chosen. (Fig.10.1) provides one simple illustration of Isard’s substitution principle.

14.1. Water Source Identification

• In places where Ficus religiosa tree is found, underground water will be more.
• Underground water will be more in places where the neem tree with more knots is found.
• In places where termite hills are found, underground water will be more.
• Farmers are practicing traditional method of using neem stick, metals etc. for finding the water resource in underground for digging wells. While they are walking with this stick on hand it will be rottate automatically at the place where underground water is surplus.
• Some farmers are using the magnetic stones for identifying water sources. Magnet is tied with a thread and held like a pendulum while walking over the fields. The magnet will rotate automatically at the place where underground water is more and this is taken as the indication for digging wells.

26.1. What?

These devices are used to lift water to a height that allows access to water. Lifting devices can be used to lift groundwater, rainwater stored in an underground reservoir and river water. For agricultural use, water is lifted either from a borewell or open well to irrigate the crops. According to power sources, lifting of water can be accomplished either manually or by animal or electricity sources of power.

26.2. Human-powered devices

Man has a limited physical power output, which may be in the range of 0.08 to 0.1 hp. This power can be used to lift water from shallow depths for irrigation. These include swing basket, counterpoise lift, don, Archimedean screw and paddle wheel. However, nowadays these are not commonly used.

26.3. Animal-powered devices

Animal power is abundantly available in India. They are used to lift water, besides being put to use for other field operations and processing works. A pair of bullocks may develop approximately 0.80 horsepower. They can lift water from a depth of 30m or more. Of course, the rate of discharge will go down with increase in the lift. These include rope and bucket lift, self emptying bucket, two bucket lift, Persian wheel and chain pump.

Abstract

In the emerging era of wide spread use of IT tools, up-to-date information on water resources is the key to support economic development, conserve the nature as well as to improve the quality of life. Due to rapid rise in population  and food demand, growing economy and improving living standards; the pressure on our water resources is increasing and it will become scarce in the coming decades if not managed at this stage in a integrated way. Water resources management requires a multi-disciplinary approach that combines a collection of technical tools and expertise along with stakeholders of diverse interests and priorities in planning and management and an operational water resources information system at national level is the first requirement.

1.0 Introduction

Population in dry lands of the world is increasing; more fresh water is required in order to meet the growing demands. To meet this challenging situation developing new technologies for identification of potential sites for rainwater harvesting (RWH) is an important step towards maximizing water availability in semi-arid areas.

Given increasing demands, dwindling resources, and climate-induced uncertainties, water resource management is a critical challenge in the 21st century. Integrating Information Technology (IT) into water resource management offers transformative solutions to optimize water usage, monitor resources, predictshortages, and enhance distribution efficiency. IT tools such as remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and big data analytics are at the forefront of this evolution, enabling more effective planning, decision-making, and resource sustainability.

The presence of water in its various phases (gas, liquid, and solid) within the atmosphere plays a pivotal role in shaping our weather and climate.This chapter, „Water Vapor in the Atmosphere,“ will delve into the crucial concept of atmospheric humidity – the amount of water vapor in the air. Water, unique in its ability to exist in all three states at Earth‘s temperatures, undergoes phase changes that are fundamental to the formation of clouds, precipitation, and atmospheric stability. Understanding the sources of atmospheric moisture, the ways it is measured and expressed, and its influence on atmospheric processes is essential for comprehending a wide range of meteorological phenomena. We will explore concepts such as evaporation, condensation, humidity indices, and the role of moisture in energy transfer within the Earth-atmosphere system. Join us as we unravel the dynamics of this vital component of our atmospheric environment.

Vapor pressure is the partial pressure exerted by water vapor molecules in ,the air. It represents the contribution of water vapor to the total atmospheric pressure. Imagine air as a mixture of gases; the vapor pressure is the „pressure“ exerted solely by the water vapor component of that mixture.

Abstract

The livelihood security of hill people is closely associated with hydrology of the region. The Himalayas possesses one of the largest reserve resources of freshwater in the form of snow and ice, thereby supporting livelihoods of millions of people. The physiographic constraints of the region restrict irrigation development with the result that, majority of cultivated area remains rainfed. Climate change is also a serious issue concerning hill economy. Its impact on livelihood security is dictated, among other things, through change in hydrology. In addition to highlighting hydrological issues, suggestions are offered on how to deal with water related issues to livelihood enlargement and protection.

ABSTRACT

The major part of the agriculture in India is Rainfed. The increasing pressure of population on land has resulted into over exploitation of land, water and other ecological resources, resulting in water scarcity, land degradation and rapid depletion of ground water-table. Government of India has adopted watershed management strategy to address these problems, but all existing watershed management programmes are mainly fragmented and governed by different departments. This has resulted in formation of providing better service delivery and governance. In this study an attempt is made to identify the scope of convergence between National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) with Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP) for generation of social capital and self-employment in the command area of a watershed using geospatial technology.

As we conclude this comprehensive review of the complex relationships between weather, crop diseases, and disease management, it is essential to reflect on the current state of knowledge and identify areas that require further research and attention. The preceding chapters have highlighted the significant impacts of weather factors on crop diseases, emphasizing the need for a deeper understanding of these relationships to develop effective disease management strategies. Significant work particularly on effects of different weather combinations on pathogen population and disease severity needs to be addressed well in time. Despite significant advances in our understanding of the weather-crop disease nexus, there remain substantial knowledge gaps that hinder our ability to predict and manage disease outbreaks effectively. For instance, the complex interactions between weather factors, crop physiology, and disease development are not yet fully understood, making it challenging to develop accurate predictive models. Furthermore, the impacts of climate change on weather patterns and crop diseases are still being researched, and more work is needed to understand these relationships fully. To address these knowledge gaps and improve our understanding of the weather-crop disease nexus, several action plans are required. Firstly, continued research is needed to elucidate the complex relationships between weather factors, crop physiology, and disease development. This research should focus on developing a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms driving these relationships, as well as identifying key weather thresholds that trigger disease outbreaks. Secondly, the development of accurate predictive models that can forecast disease outbreaks based on weather data is critical. These models should be able to account for the complex interactions between weather factors, crop physiology, and disease development, as well as incorporate data from multiple sources, including weather stations, satellite imagery, and field observations. Thirdly, there is a need for more effective communication and collaboration between researchers, policymakers, and farmers to ensure that research findings are translated into practical disease management strategies. This will require the development of user-friendly decision support tools that can provide farmers with timely and accurate advice on disease management, based on weather forecasts and other relevant data. Finally, addressing the impacts of climate change on weather patterns and crop diseases will require a coordinated effort from researchers, policymakers, and

Of all the environmental factors that influence farming, weather reigns supreme, orchestrating a complex symphony of elements that dictate the success or failure of crops. This chapter delves into the intricate relationship between weather and agriculture, exploring how temperature, precipitation, sunlight, and other atmospheric conditions shape every facet of agricultural production.
Weather’s influence begins with the very first stage of a plant’s life. Temperature governs seed germination and seedling development, while sunlight provides the energy for photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert light energy into chemical energy. The availability of water, dictated by rainfall patterns, is crucial for plant growth and nutrient absorption. Wind patterns can aid in pollination but also cause damage to crops.
Throughout the growing season, weather continues to play a critical role. Optimal temperatures are essential for each stage of plant development, from flowering to fruit production. Adequate rainfall, or irrigation to supplement it, ensures healthy growth and abundant yields.
Extreme weather events, such as droughts, floods, heatwaves, and frosts, can have devastating consequences for agriculture. These events can destroy crops, reduce yields, and disrupt food production, leading to economic losses and food insecurity (Fig. 18.1).

Bacterial diseases are a significant threat to human health, agriculture, and the environment. These diseases are caused by pathogenic bacteria that can infect various hosts, including humans, animals, and plants. The severity and spread of bacterial diseases are influenced by various factors, including weather parameters. Weather conditions, such as temperature, humidity, wind, and precipitation, play a crucial role in the development, dissemination, and survival of bacterial pathogens (Fig. 8.1). Fig. 8.1. High temperatures can accelerate the growth of some bacteria, while low temperatures can slow it down or even kill them, however every pathogenic bacterium have its own weather window. For example, a daytime temperature of 35°C and nighttime temperatures of 27°C are most favorable for Xanthomonas oryzae infecting rice. Similarly, humidity influences the survival and dissemination of bacteria, with high humidity favoring the growth and spread of many bacterial pathogens. For example, lower soil moisture decreases the chances of infection of Ralstonia solanacearum in tomato plants. Wind and precipitation also impact the spread of bacterial diseases. Wind can disperse bacterial spores and cells, allowing them to reach new areas and infect new hosts. Precipitation, on the other hand, can influence the availability of moisture, which is essential for the growth and survival of many bacterial

The development and spread of fungal diseases are influenced by a complex array of factors, including crop susceptibility, pathogen virulence, and environmental conditions. Among these environmental factors, weather plays a critical role in determining the severity and impact of fungal diseases on crops. Weather conditions, such as temperature, humidity, precipitation, and wind, can significantly affect the life cycle of fungal pathogens, including spore production, dispersal, and infection. For example, high temperatures and dry conditions can inhibit the growth and development of some fungal pathogens, while cool and wet conditions can favor their development and spread. Similarly, wind and precipitation can facilitate the dispersal of fungal spores, leading to the rapid spread of disease (Fig. 7.1). Furthermore, knowledge of the weather effects on fungal diseases can also inform the development of more accurate and reliable disease forecasting systems.

Weather conditions can influence the spread of viruses, the survival and multiplication of virus vectors, and the susceptibility of plants to virus infection (Fig. 9.1). Understanding the relationships between weather parameters and viral diseases is essential for developing effective disease management strategies and mitigating the impacts of viral diseases on crop productivity. Techniques such as Long Short-Term Memory networks, attention mechanisms, ensemble learning, and probabilistic forecasting support improved prediction of complex weather patterns. This complex endeavor begins with the meticulous collection of vast quantities of real-time data, encompassing everything from surface observations of temperature, pressure, wind, and humidity to upperair measurements gathered by weather balloons, aircraft, radar, and advanced satellite systems. The core of modern weather forecasting lies in numerical weather prediction (NWP) models. These are intricate computer programs that embody the fundamental laws of physics governing atmospheric processes, such as fluid dynamics and thermodynamics. By feeding the enormous datasets of current atmospheric conditions into these models, supercomputers solve complex equations to simulate how the atmosphere will evolve over minutes, hours, and days. The raw output from these models is then further refined by human meteorologists who apply their expertise, integrating local geographical influences, historical patterns (climatology), and statistical techniques to produce the most accurate and actionable forecasts. The importance of accurate weather forecasting cannot be overstated. It serves as a vital tool across countless sectors, guiding daily personal decisions, from what to wear to whether to carry an umbrella. Crucially, for agriculture, precise weather forecasts are indispensable. Farmers rely heavily on these predictions to make informed decisions that directly impact crop yield and livestock health. Knowing when to plant seeds, schedule irrigation, apply fertilizers and pesticides, or harvest crops is directly influenced by anticipated rainfall, temperature extremes, and wind conditions. Timely warnings of frost, hailstorms, or prolonged droughts can enable farmers to take protective measures, minimizing losses and ensuring food security. For example, in regions like Telangana, where agriculture is a dominant sector, understanding

For example, high humidity and rainfall can create ideal conditions for fungal diseases, while warm temperatures and dry conditions can favor the development of bacterial diseases.By analyzing weather forecasts, farmers can identify periods of high disease risk and take steps to protect their crops. This might involve applying fungicides or bactericides, adjusting irrigation schedules, or implementing other cultural controls to reduce the risk of disease outbreaks (Fig. 12.1). In recent years, advances in technology have improved the accuracy and availability of weather forecasts, making it easier for farmers to access the information they need to make informed decisions about disease control.Additionally, the development of predictive models that incorporate weather data, crop phenology, and other factors has further enhanced the ability of farmers to anticipate and manage disease outbreaks . Overall, the use of weather forecasts in disease control measures is a critical component of integrated disease management (IDM) strategies, which aim to minimize the economic, environmental, and social impacts of crop diseases. By leveraging advances in weather forecasting and predictive modeling, farmers can reduce their reliance on chemical controls, promote more sustainable agricultural practices, and improve the overall health and productivity of their crops.

Weather, while often benign and essential for life, can also manifest in powerful and destructive forms, posing significant threats to human life, property, and the environment. This chapter, “Weather Hazards,” will delve into the detailed nature of these potentially dangerous atmospheric phenomena.
We will explore a range of significant weather hazards, including severe storms such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hailstorms, which can bring intense winds, torrential rainfall, and damaging projectiles. We will also examine the characteristics and impacts of tropical cyclones (hurricanes, typhoons), known for their devastating winds, storm surges, and widespread flooding. Furthermore, we will discuss the dangers associated with extreme temperature events, including heat waves, characterized by prolonged periods of excessively hot weather, and cold waves, marked by extended periods of dangerously cold temperatures. We will also cover the challenges posed by heavy snowfall, blizzards, and ice storms.

In today’s rapidly evolving world, food production is at the confluence of tradition and innovation. While age-old farming practices have sustained civilizations for millennia, the modern era demands an unprecedented level of precision and foresight. Weather intelligence—the practice of integrating detailed meteorological data with advanced analytics and decision support systems— is revolutionizing food production, from agriculture and fisheries to animal husbandry (Fig. 1.1). This chapter lays the foundation for understanding how accurate and timely weather data underpins food security, economic sustainability, and environmental stewardship. It further highlights global themes addressing the growing demand for food in any nation with a burgeoning population, the challenges of climate change, and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events. This introduction also outlines the objectives and structure of this book, which aims to empower decision makers with the knowledge needed to navigate a world where climate and food production are inextricably linked.
1.1 Context & Importance
1.1.1 The Changing Face of Food Production
Food production has always been sensitive to the whims of nature. Historically, farmers relied on folklore, seasonal patterns, and local wisdom to guide planting and harvesting cycles. With growth and development of atmospheric sciences from 19th century, farmers started depending upon weather forecasts in planning and management of agricultural production systems. However, with the advent of climate change, environmental degradation, and increasingly unpredictable

Forecasting crop diseases based on the movement of weather systems is a critical component of modern agriculture, enabling farmers and agricultural stakeholders to take proactive measures to prevent or mitigate the impact of disease outbreaks on crop yields and quality. The relationship between weather patterns and crop disease transmission is complex and multifaceted, with various weather factors influencing the development, spread, and severity of crop diseases. (Fig. 14.1). Weather systems, including high and low-pressure systems, fronts, and wind patterns, play a significant role in the spread of crop diseases. For instance, wind currents can transport fungal s3pores, bacteria, and viruses over long distances, facilitating the spread of diseases such as powdery mildew, rust, and leaf spot. Additionally, weather conditions like temperature, humidity, and precipitation can affect the growth and development of crops, making them more susceptible to disease. Recent advances in meteorology, plant pathology, and data analytics have enabled researchers to develop predictive models that can forecast crop disease outbreaks based on weather patterns. These models use historical weather data, disease surveillance data, and crop phenology data to identify patterns and correlations between weather systems and disease outbreaks.

Weather wisdom refers to the ability to understand, interpret, and apply knowledge of weather patterns, forecasts, and conditions to make informed decisions in various aspects of life. This concept encompasses a comprehensive understanding of meteorological principles, as well as the ability to analyze and apply weather information in a practical and effective manner. At its core, weather wisdom involves a grasp of basic meteorological concepts, such as atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity, wind, and precipitation. This foundational knowledge serves as a framework for understanding more complex weather phenomena, such as storms, droughts, and heat waves.In addition to a solid understanding of weather fundamentals, weather wisdom also requires the ability to interpret forecasts, warnings, and advisories issued by meteorological agencies. This involves being able to comprehend and analyze weather forecast models, as well as understanding the limitations and uncertainties associated with weather prediction (Fig. 2.1). Furthermore, weather wisdom involves familiarity with local weather patterns, climate, and microclimates. This knowledge is essential for making informed decisions, as local weather conditions can vary significantly from regional or national forecasts. Distributing geospatial information on the Internet is an enforcing factor for information providers. For dissemination of spatial data, Web-GIS technology can be used, which is amalgamation of several information technologies. Open Source is a philosophy of providing software with better quality, more flexibility, and lower cost. This paper explains the use of Open Source Web-GIS which provides a fast and globally reachable way not only to represent the information about natural resources through maps and statistics but also possibility of processing the information interactively on web.

1.0 Introduction

India is blessed with diverse and abundant resources. India has been witnessing tremendous growth which has impacted practically every aspect of environment and the common man. Natural resource has been tremendously in use due to increase in population growth, thus generation, dissemination and sharing of information regarding natural resources and data amongst all stake holders have become a necessity. The utilization of modern technologies such as remote sensing, GIS which are effective in management of natural resources as user can store, retrieve and model the spatial information. Web media is playing a vital role in making people aware about the importance and conservation of natural resources. We are presenting such efforts with use of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) tools.

The vision 2020 document of the Department of Agriculture and Co-operation envisages that “the tools of ICT will provide networking of Agriculture Sector not only in the country but also globally and the Centre and State Government Departments will have reservoir of databases” and also “bring farmers, researchers, scientists and administrators together by establishing ”Agriculture Online” through exchange of ideas and information”. To get realize the vision 2020 a large number of agriculture based websites and web portals have been established in India which is working for wellbeing of farming community. Majority of agricultural websites and web portals are providing need based technological information to the farmers as well as extension professionals. To revitalize our extension system these web based services can be used as ICT tool by extension personnel and farmers also. Therefore, to get access services from these websites and web portals or to replicate these ideologies in other part of country, elementary knowledge of working process and services available on these websites & web portals is essential. This chapter will provide a brief description about major ICT based projects dedicated to Indian farmers.

Abstract

Invasion of field crops, orchards and waste-lands by weeds is a matter of concern for farmers and foresters because of the drag they inflict on productivity and the increase in cost of production involved in weed control. Science-based technologies offer workable and reliable recourse to minimizing and/or eliminating these losses to promote healthier and rewarding livelihoods. While studies have been conducted to combat brush-weed in waste-land and plantations, little work has been done on such aspects as biological control of weeds, development of herbicide resistance in weeds, and allelopathic interface of crops and weeds. In this chapter, attempt is made to assess the economics of weed management in major crops. Aspects of R&D on weed management that should be addressed for safeguarding yield in the future are highlighted with particular reference to situation in western Himalaya.

Site-specific weed control technologies practiced in precision farming are defined as machinery or equipment embedded with technologies that detect weeds growing in a crop and take action to maximise the chances of successfully controlling them taking into account predefined factors such as economics.Some of the commercial hardware and software developed for precision agriculture practices comprise tools for weed mapping and control software that adapts spraying to local weed occurrence. However, few farmers have adopted sitespecific weed management, although several studies have shown that weed occurrence and density varies significantly within a farm or a field. Site-specific weed control techniques have gained interest in the precision farming community over the years. Managing weeds on a subfield level requires measuring the varying density of weeds within a field. Decision models aid in the selection and adjustment of the treatments, depending on the weed infestation. The weed control can be done either with herbicides or mechanically. A site-specific herbicide application technology can save large amounts of herbicides. Mechanical weed control techniques adapting to the weed situation in the field are applicable to a wide spectrum of crops.

A system for the discrimination of different weed species and crops from images is done which generates weed maps automatically. Models for the yield effect of weeds are developed and applied in on-farm-research experimental setups. Economic weed thresholds are derived and used for an herbicide application with a patch sprayer.Herbicide use has not eliminated weed problems in agriculture and the need for manual weed removal is still an issue within specialty crop systems, particularly during the first several weeks of crop emergence when competition for resources is greatest.

Precision agriculture is a powerful technology with potentially important applications to weed management. However, growers should remember good agronomic practices, including preventing weed infestations, managing herbicides wisely to prevent resistance, and minimizing environmental impact associated with weed management. Weeds, and methods used to control weeds, can have negative economic and environmental impacts. With precision agriculture, growers can take advantage of the patchy nature of weeds by targeting management efforts only where they are needed instead of wasting expensive and potentially hazardous inputs where weeds are not present. Weeds are patchy because weed spread, survival, and reproduction are variable within a field and over time. Weed patches stay in about the same place from year to year, even though weed density within a patch may vary

19.1. Need for weeding

Weeding is the critical operation to be carried out to obtain a good crop. Weeds are plants which grow in places where they are not wanted. They grow in the fields competing with crops for water, soil nutrients, light and space and thus reduce crop yields. They also harbor insect pests and micro-organisms. Certain weeds release the inhibitors or poisonous substances into the soil which are harmful to plants, human beings and livessecks. They increase the expenditure on labour and equipment, render harvesting difficult and reduce the quality and marketability of agricultural produce. When grown in water channels, they block and or reduce the flow of water.

The weed seeds germinate earlier and grow faster than the crop plant. This phenomenon is more pronounced when coupled with favourable environment like fine soil tilth and the soil receiving adequate water and fertilizers. Weeds flower earlier and produce seeds profusely ahead of the crop. So, these seeds get mixed up with the harvested crop and are distributed to the next season or transported to other places along with the harvested produce.

The pros and cons of wheat imports are now a matter of public, political and media concern and debate. I have been quoted as both favouring imports and opposing it. Since this issue is a complex one with short- and long-term implications, I would like to explain my personal position.

The wheat import plan announced by the Government of India is in response to the need for maintaining adequate food stocks both for the purpose of food security and for feeding the public distribution system (PDS). Following the Wheat Revolution in 1968, Indira Gandhi decided to build a sufficient buffer stock of foodgrains under government control in order to ensure that the basic staples are available at reasonable prices even under conditions of unfavourable monsoon. She was also deeply conscious of the linkage between food security and sovereignty in foreign policy. Maintaining adequate food reserves is an absolute must from the point of view of avoiding both panic purchase and famines, particularly at times when there are indications of aberrant monsoon behaviour. Some years ago the Government of India had over 60 million tonnes of foodgrain reserves and substantial quantities were exported to reduce the cost of maintaining stocks of that order.

Abstract

The present study discusses the cropping pattern changes in Andhra Pradesh agriculture will leads to crop diversification and crop concentration using with Geographical Information System (GIS). Crop data were compiled for the triennium ending period 1980-81, 1990-91, 2000-01 and 2004-05 from various statistical abstracts of Andhra Pradesh. For measuring the crop diversification indices, we have used the Herfindahle index and for crop specialization is measured by using the Location quotient method. The level of crop diversification in the some districts of the state in the eighties is very high. However with the advent of green revolution, there had been a moderate crop unification or crop concentration in the eighties. This trend of crop unification is found to be reversed after 1990-91, though the magnitude of the change is not very striking. The crop diversification is observed to differ across the districts. The level of crop diversification is high in the agricultural backward regions of Rayalaseema and Telangana districts and low in the agriculturally progressive Coastal Andhra districts. During the period 1990-91 to 2004-05, the major trends in crop concentration are increase in the concentration of rice in the districts where it is popularly grown and decline in the concentration of coarse cereal crops, pulses and oilseeds. The concentration of spice crops and fruits and vegetables are also on an increasing trend, which they are popularly grown in their respective districts.

Policies provide the institutional structure, direction, financial support and operational framework required for effective agricultural extension. Without clear policies, extension programmes may suffer from inconsistent decisions, fragmented implementation and unclear responsibilities. This chapter introduces the meaning, characteristics, sources and different types of policies and explains their importance to extension organizations. It examines how policies guide decision-making, establish limits, allocate resources and connect organizational goals with field activities. The chapter also introduces policy advocacy, analytical approaches and the policy-development process. Together, these concepts enable extension professionals to understand policy environments, participate constructively in decision-making and improve the responsiveness, accountability and effectiveness of extension services.

Abstract

The food security scenario in South Asia has witnessed rapid progress over the last few decades, yet nutrition outcomes, especially those related to women and children, have failed to keep pace. This paper contends that the role of women in providing food and nutrition security at the household and individual level needs to be examined, if the paradox of persisting malnutrition amid macro level food sufficiency is to be resolved. Food security, in its broader connotation, results from the availability of adequate food, effective consumption, and desirable nutrition outcomes. As such, it is intricately linked with a woman’s multiple roles expressed in her productive, reproductive, and caring functions. However, even focused efforts aimed at resolving the problems faced by women in performing one or other of their roles, may fail to produce expected results, if the issues underlying each function and their inter-linkages are not fully understood. The paper thus attempts to review various aspects of the relationship between women and food security in South Asia, highlights the issues that require urgent focus and indicates emerging concerns in the region.

Women constitute 50% of our population. Their contribution to farming needs no emphasis as they are integral part of it. Women have developed farming in our country and contributed immensely for growth and maintenance of agriculture as a whole. But majority of them are not fully aware of sustainable agriculture in scientific terms although they practice it. Surveys and observations reveal that women are in favor of traditional agriculture and feel that traditional farming is more sustainable than the present one.

Women empowerment means capacity of womenfolk to participate as equal partners in cultural, social, economic and political systems with much appreciated and gladly accepted by the society. Acceptance of unequal gender norms by women are still persisting in the society. Moreover, ignorance prevails in rural areas and subordination to men is considered as god-will by the womenfolk. Food, health and education are prioritized to boys and girls’ destiny is linked to surplus resource of the family if any, available. Gender inequality exists in every nation on the planet. Women’s disempowerment is all over the world, comprising countries of east and west so empowerment of women has become one of the most important concerns of 21st century’s world. More than one third of the world’s adults, most of them women, have no access to printed knowledge, to new skills or to technologies that would improve the quality of their lives and help them shape and adapt to social and economic change. There are 130 million children who are not enrolled in primary school and 70 per cent of them are girls. Women and girls around the world are more likely to live in poverty due to discriminatory and unjust economic policies, pervasive gender inequality, war and instability and climate change. Human society has to work for sexual and reproductive health and rights, freedom from violence, economic justice, and leadership as these are the critical building blocks for women’s rights. When a woman has these rights, she can be strong, safe, powerful, and heard. Cultural and religious factors are hurdles to women empowerment so the greatest need of the hour is to change the social attitude towards women. There is need to envision a world where all women, girls, and trans people have a voice and choice in the work they do. They are paid equal wages in safe and secure workplaces and they have access to justice and rights. Strengthening women’s leadership should be priority area because it is an integral part of social perception towards women status. The future of women’s human rights depends on a strong pipeline of diverse young women leaders, as well as on creating opportunities for leaders from different generations and movements to learn from each other. Long lists of international and national initiatives are available on the websites of various governments and United Nations but the tangible results are still awaited mainly because of poor/ half heartedly implementation.

Introduction

The status of women in India has been subject to many great changes over the past few millennia. From equal status with men in ancient times through the low points of the medieval period, to the promotion of equal rights by many reformers. The history of women in India has been eventful. In modern India, women have adored high offices in India including that of the President, Prime Minister, Speaker of Lok Sabha, leaders of opposition etc. The incumbent president of India is a woman but the same vast majority of the women suffer from the great discrimination and even the basic human rights are denied to them.

INTRODUCTION

In the history of human development, woman has been as important as man. In fact, the status, employment and work performed by women in society is the indicator of a nation’s overall progress. Without the participation of women in national activities, the social, economical or political progress of a country will stagnate. Empowerment is a multi-dimensional process, which should enable women to realize their full identity and power in all spheres of life. It consists of greater access to knowledge and resources, greater autonomy in decision making to enable them to have greater ability to plan their lives, or to have greater control over the circumstances that influence their lives and free from shocks imposed on them by customs, beliefs and practices. Generally development with justice is expected to generate the forces that lead to empowerment of various sections of women and to raise their status.
