Introduction
 
Climate change is a result from emission of greenhouse gases (e.g. CO₂, CH₄, N₂O, etc.) that will cause atmospheric warming (IPCC, 2007). Climate change may be due to natural internal processes or external forcing such as modulations of the solar cycles, volcanic eruptions, and persistent anthropogenic changes in the composition of the atmosphere or in land use. Human induced changes in atmosphere composition are a major concern. Burning of fossil fuels, like oil, coal, and natural gas is adding CO₂ to the atmosphere.

The effects of global warming and/or climate change are of concern both for the environment and human life. Evidence of observed climate change includes the instrumental temperature record, rising sea levels, and decreased snow cover in the Northern Hemisphere. According to the IntergovernmentalPanel for Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report, “most of the observed increase in global average temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in [human greenhousegas] concentrations. It is predicted that futureclimate changes will include further globalwarming (i.e., an upward trendin global mean temperature), sea level rise, and a probable increase in the frequency of some extreme weather events. Ecosystems are seen as being particularly vulnerable to climate change. Human systems are seen as being variable in their capacity toadapt to future climate change. To reduce the risk of large changes in future climate, many countries have implemented policies designed to reducetheir emissions of greenhouse gas.

14.1. INTRODUCTION

The climate of a place is the average weather that is experiences over a period of time. It is the natural phenomenon that has occurred throughout the history of the earth. Climate change is strongly associated with higher temperature, altered precipitation, and higher levels of atmospheric CO₂ and other greenhouse gases. It is a very slow process; it takes a long time to settle in. Climate change in IPCC (2007) usage refers to any change in climate over time, whether due to natural variability or as a result of human activities. Over the last 150-200 years the changes to our climate are happening more quickly now than they have ever done before in the geological past. Human activities have altered natural climatic processes at a geographically rapid pace by booting atmospheric concentrations of several greenhouse gasses. Following are the changes taken place over years of industrial age (IPCC, 2007):

Climate change presents horticulture with increasing challenges including heat stress, water scarcity, erratic rainfall, extreme weather, new pest pressures, and changing crop suitability. This chapter examines strategies for developing climate-resilient horticultural systems through improved cultivars, efficient irrigation, protected cultivation, mulching, canopy management, soil-health practices, and diversification. Climate-smart production also requires better forecasting, monitoring, risk management, and resource efficiency. Future horticulture is expected to integrate biotechnology, artificial intelligence, precision agriculture, automation, renewable energy, and resilient production systems. The chapter emphasizes adaptation rather than dependence on a single technology, promoting integrated approaches that maintain productivity, quality, profitability, and ecological sustainability under changing climatic conditions.

Climatic statistics applies quantitative methods to weather and climate observations, transforming raw records into information for forecasting, planning and resource management. This chapter explains how averages, variability, distribution, trends and extremes describe climatic behaviour over time and space. It introduces climate normals, measures of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, kurtosis, data quality, missing-value treatment, homogenization and outlier detection. Statistical interpretation helps distinguish short-term weather fluctuations from long-term climatic patterns. In agriculture, these techniques support crop planning, drought assessment, rainfall characterization and risk management. The chapter establishes the statistical foundation required for scientifically examining climate variability and its influence on crops, ecosystems and agricultural resources.

There are other groups that contribute to the reactivity of enzymes beside amino acid residues.

These groups are called cofactors - chemicals required by apoenzymes (inactive) to become holoenzymes (active).

There are two types of cofactors:

1. Essential ions - metal ions -inorganic
2. Coenzymes - organic molecules that act as group-transfer reagents (accept or donate groups)- can also be H⁺ and/or e^-

Both provide reactive groups not found on amino acids side chains.

Coenzymes can be either cosubstrates (loosely bound to enzyme; is altered, then regenerated) or prosthetic groups (tightly bound to enzyme).

6.1. INTRODUCTION

Low temperature is one of the major environmental factors that limit the plant growth. Many plants of tropical origin suffer cold damage when exposed to temperature below 20ºC (Graham and Patterson, 1982, Andrews, 1987). Cold temperature in crop plants are compounded by cold snap– a lower than usual drop in temperature that causes the crop to fail. Low temperature in growing season may reduce germination, retard vegetative growth by inducing metabolic imbalances and can delay or prevent productive development. Each plant species has an optimum range of temperature for its normal growth and development. It varies among the genotypes within a species, the specific temperature also depends on the growth stage and development of the particular genotype.

Soil is a mass of large variability and thus its sampling is the most challenging problem for any soil analyst. Practically, soil sampling is a two step process which includes (i) collection of soil from homogeneous unit and (ii) processing which in turn includes drying, grinding, sieving, mixing, partitioning and storing.

Soil testing identifies various constraints in soil that limit crop production. Fertilizer recommendation and soil management practices to be adopted are based on the soil test report. Soil testing starts with collection of soil samples from the field
and ends with interpretation of soil test results leading to necessary recommendations for increasing crop production.

In this chapter, we describe the methods of preparation of some of the buffers, most commonly used in the assay of enzymes required for plant physiological and histochemical studies.

The buffers have been arranged in an alphabetical order starting with their names. These methods are not necessarily identical with those of the original authors. It is advised that the users should re-determine the titration curves of majority of the buffers. These buffers have also been listed in Method in Enzymology, Vol. 1 (1955), pp. 138-146.

The chapter on completely randomized design (CRD) presents an overview of its theoretical principles, structure, and randomization methods. It includes the mathematical modeling of CRD and the analysis of ANOVA tables. Additionally, the chapter facilitates an understanding of how to analyze CRD and factorial CRD data using R, offering valuable practical insights for research applications.

Completely Randomized Design

Completely Randomized Design is a type of experimental design commonly used in statistical analysis and research. It is applied under specific conditions:

• Homogeneous units: CRD is suitable when the experimental units are consistent and uniform across the study area.

• Adherence to experimental design principles: This design conforms to two principal aspects of experimental design i.e. Randomization and Replication.

• Flexibility in replication: It allows for both equal and unequal replication of treatments within the experimental setup.

• Suitable for controlled environments: CRD is particularly effective for experiments conducted in greenhouses or laboratories, where conditions can be tightly regulated

Since the wide introduction of organochlorines and other synthetics in early 50’s farmers have heavily relied on the chemical pesticides for pest control. Over emphasis on chemical control has caused serious imbalances in the agro-ecosystem. The enormous quantities of chemicals, poisonous to microbial life, that fall on earth gets mixed up well with soil. Some problems like non-target effects of chemicals as well as latrogenic diseases are being experienced. Coupled with these, the increasing awareness of impeding pollution, health hazards and development of resistance have intensified the search for alternative strategies.

In the present investigation, the attempts have been made to test the stability and pest management efficacy of the plant extracts of some Indian medicinal plants, namely, Datura stramonium, Ricinus communis, Vitex trifolia and Nerium indicum. In the earlier chapters detailed methodologies and the results have been elaborated. This chapter embodes the comprehensive inter- and intra-comparative results and discussion on the basis of selected plants, extraction media, pest species and bioassay followed by conclusions.

The hot sterilized water extracts of R. communis were found to be more stable (i.e. 20 days to start the fermentation). In overall study the plant extracts were stable or viable means active for three to four weeks only. In most cases, the activity of cold and hot water extracts was found to be increasing with fermentation however the decrease in the activity of some extract was also observed.

The highest mean anti-fungal activity was reported for R. communis extracts followed by D. stramonium and N. indicum aqueous extracts, whereas no any anti-fungal potency was reflected by V. trifolia against test fungi species. R. communis and N. indicum extracts, the cold water method extraction showed greater positive effects in terms of mean anti-fungal potency as compared to the hot water extracts. The water extraction of D. stramonium was found to be more effective in anti-fungal activity study.

Computer vision provides an important foundation for automated plant analysis, monitoring and precision agriculture. Introduction

Agriculture has played an important role in the global economy in recent years. The further growth of the population is leading to a gradual decrease in the area of the agricultural land and further growing stresses on the farm system. Agricultural food production methods are rising in demand for successful and healthy. Innovative sensoring and motive technologies and advanced information and communications systems and Artificial Intelligence must supplement conventional agricultural management methods to speed up farm productivity growth more accurately, thereby promoting the production of high-quality and high-performance agriculture. Computer vision monitoring systems have become valuable tools in farm operations over the past decades, and their use has increased significantly.

What is Computer Vision?

Computer vision can be characterized as a field of AI for extracting information from digital images. The type of data obtained from an image may be different from recognition, navigational space measurements or applications of increased reality.

The applications of computer vision can also be described. Computer vision builds algorithms that recognize and use the quality of pictures for other purposes.

9.1 Introduction

According to FAO guideline, “Conservation Agriculture (CA) is an approach to managing agricultural ecosystems for enhanced and sustained productivity, improved returns, and food security while preserving and enhancing the resource base and the environment.”

The terms “conservation agriculture” (CA) and “resource-conserving technologies” (RCTs) are not synonyms, but sometimes both words are used for a similar meaning. Therefore, the practices which improve resource or input-use efficiency are termed as RCTs. RCT is a wider term than CA which is used for nitrogen-efficient varieties; fuel-, money-, and time-efficient techniques; and improvement in plot-level water productivity including CA.

Abstract

Amongst various oilseed crops grown across the world, soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) is globally important as a high source of protein and oil for human consumption and is also being used as potential feed for animals. Soybean is grown under rain-fed conditions in the tropics and subtropics in the marginal lands with less amount of external application of chemical fertilizers. The frequent climate variations have created a number of biotic and abiotic stresses, drought being a major abiotic stress which adversely affects the soybean productivity. Thus, to enhance the productivity of soybean, besides managing the nutrients, stress management is of utmost importance. There is a great opportunity of application of microbes especially arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) where its application alone or in combination with plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can help in nutrient mobilization and remediation of plant stresses.

Correlation and regression are essential statistical tools for examining relationships among climate variables and agricultural responses. Correlation measures the strength and direction of association, while regression develops mathematical relationships for explanation and prediction. This chapter discusses their application to rainfall, temperature, humidity, evapotranspiration, crop growth and yield. It explains simple and multiple relationships, assumptions, interpretation, model fitting, predictive power and potential errors. These methods support crop-weather modelling, yield forecasting, climate-impact assessment and agricultural decision-making. By identifying how climatic variables influence biological and production processes, correlation and regression analysis help researchers generate reliable predictions and design more resilient and productive agricultural management strategies under changing environmental conditions.

Correlation

Correlation analysis is a statistical method used to evaluate the strength and direction of the relationship between two variables. This analysis is vital in identifying and understanding how variables are interconnected within a dataset, providing insights into their mutual influences.

With the current food production level of 275.11 million tonnes, India has to step up food grain production by next decade to feed the burgeoning population (Report Ministry of Agriculture). India with 2.3% of the global geographical area, supports about 16.8% human population, 20% of the world’s livestock. However, per capita availability of land for producing agricultural commodities has declined from 0.34 ha in 1951 to about 0.23 ha in 1980 and 0.15 ha in 0.15 ha during 2015 and it is expected to decline further to about 0.09 ha by 2050 A.D. With the possibility of horizontal expansion or putting more land under cultivation being remote, further augmentation in yield in Indian agriculture will be forced more and more into marginal or problematic soils accompany about 57% geographical area with increasing competition for good quality lands.

11.1 Biomass

Globally, all agricultural countries have promoted the use of biomass sources for many household applications and biomass energy generation. Biomass is defined as the bio residue available from the sum of crop production, agricultural waste, vegetation, forestry waste and organic waste. Biomass is a renewable source of energy and contains a complex mixture of carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, and oxygen. Various biomass resources are available in different parts of countries and are classified based on their availability. The broad classification of biomass energy is in three formats; residue of agricultural crops, energy plantations, and municipal and industrial waste. Agriculture residues are organic materials produced as the byproduct from processing and harvesting of agriculture crops. 

Crossandra is an important tropical flowering crop valued for its attractive flowers and continuous production of loose blooms. It has particular importance in southern India, where flowers are widely used for garlands, hair decoration and religious purposes. This chapter covers the crop’s botanical characteristics, origin, distribution, genetics and commercially important varieties. It explains propagation, nursery management, climate and soil requirements, land preparation, planting, irrigation and nutrient management. Important cultural practices and plant growth management are discussed for obtaining regular flowering and good-quality blooms. The chapter also addresses insect pests, diseases, harvesting and postharvest management, including the correct method of flower collection. It provides a comprehensive production package for growers and students.

Applied agroclimatology integrates climatology with agronomy to understand and manage interactions between weather, climate, crops, soils and agricultural resources. It converts climatic observations and forecasts into practical information for sowing, irrigation, fertilizer application, pest management and harvesting. This chapter introduces agro-meteorological processes, crop-environment relationships, resource management and climate-smart decision-making. It explains how increasing temperatures, altered rainfall, droughts, floods and extreme weather threaten agricultural productivity and farmer livelihoods. Agroclimatic zoning, crop-calendar adjustment, suitable variety selection, early-warning systems and weather-based insurance are discussed as important approaches for strengthening food security, managing climate risks and developing resilient agricultural systems.

1. Introduction

Medicinal plants play an important role in human life to combat various diseases. The rural folks and tribals in India even now depend largely on the surrounding plants/forests for their day-to-day needs. Majority of the medicinal and aromatic plants are still collected from wild for preparation of herbal drugs and perfumes/cosmetics. Rapid population growth and rising popularity of herbal drugs and natural essential oils have brought into focus the acute scarcity in availability of some of the plants due to indiscriminate and unregulated collection, habitat destruction through expanding agricultural lands, deforestation and urbanization. Fall in the supply of good quality, genuine raw material has resulted in price rise and deterioration in the quality of formulations. With growing demand and use of medicinal and aromatic plants, the important species have to be introduced into commercial agriculture.

The Indian annual turnover of herbal material has crossed Rs. 4000 crores mark, of which Rs. 300 to 400 crores worth is being the export market. The share of Indian trade in medicinal and aromatic plants is only 1.5 percent of the world market. India is one of the major exporters of crude drugs mainly to the developed countries like the USA, the UK, Germany, Japan, France, Switzerland, etc. The main crude drugs having good export opportunities are Aconite, Aloe, Dioscorea, Ephedra, Digitalis, Bach, Belladona, Cincona, Ergot, Isabgol, Opium, Vinca, Senna, Sarpagandha, etc. Of these senna leaves, isabgol husk/seed, and Cassia tora seeds are in maximum demand. China is the major producer of herbal plant material in the world. China earns US$ 5 billion per year from herbal trade besides meeting its domestic requirements. Though India has more potential of production of number of medicinal and aromatic plants than China, the contribution of India in the world market is very low because of the production of poor quality produce (Chadha and Gupta 2005).

Dark reactions: It is light independent reactions occurs during daytime. This includes C₃, C₄ and CAM pathway involving the utilization of NADPH and ATP to fix CO₂ into carbohydrates. It is also called as stromal reactions.

Day neutral plants: The plants that flowers regardless of the length of the period of the light that is exposed to. They are called as day neutral plants.

DCMU (Dichlorophenyl dimethyl urea or diuron): An herbicide that inhibits non-cyclic photophosophorylation specifically blocks the electron flow at the quinone acceptors of PSII, by competing for the binding site of plastoquinone that is normally occupied by PQB.

DCPIP (Dichlorophenol indophenols): A dye often used as artificial hydrogen acceptor to demonstrate in Hills reaction in isolated chloroplast in laboratory. The oxidized form is blue in alkali and red in acid, while reduced form is colourless.

Deep learning has significantly advanced automated plant phenotyping and disease detection by enabling computers to identify complex patterns in large volumes of plant imagery and sensor data. This chapter examines the fundamentals and applications of deep learning architectures in plant science. It discusses convolutional neural networks for image-based plant analysis and advanced architectures including recurrent neural networks, transformers and hybrid models. Data acquisition through imaging and sensor technologies is also considered. The chapter highlights how deep learning can support automated identification of plant characteristics, disease symptoms and crop health conditions. Challenges related to datasets, environmental variability, computational requirements and model generalization are examined alongside emerging research opportunities.

Deep learning emerged as a serious contender in the field from a 10-year explosive computational development. Deep learning is therefore a special form of machine learning, the algorithms of which are based on the structure and function of the human brain.

3.1 Determination of Bulk Density of Soil

3.1.1 Determination of Bulk Density of an undisturbed Soil

Bulk density of soil is expressed as the ratio of the mass (weight) of soil particle to their total volume including the pore space between the soil particles. Alternately, it is the weight of unit volume of dry soil. It is usually expressed in the unit of gram per cubic centimeter (g/cc) or mega gram per cubic meter (Mg/m³). In fine textured soil bulk density varies from 1.00 to 1.60 g/cc, whereas in coarse textured soil from 1.20 to 1.80 g/cc.

Introduction

Flowering plants (Angiosperms) are identified by their morphological characteristics like flower, fruit and seeds that help their taxonomic characterization into different species, genera, families and orders. The floral characters which are used for taxonomic characterization of plants include the type of inflorescences, perianth structure, floral symmetry, arrangement of floral leaves, type of androecium, stamens, gynoecium, carpel, ovule, etc. The type of fruit and seed also play important roles in taxonomic classification. In this chapter we will briefly discuss about various morphological features of flowering plants (in botanical terms) that are useful in taxonomy.

Nomenclature of Plant

Nomenclature of plant is the formal and scientific naming of plants. It is related to but distinct from taxonomy for grouping and classifying plants and provide botanical name.

The scientific/botanical nomenclature started with Species Plantarum by Carolus Linnaeus in 1753. Botanical nomenclature is governed by the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN), which replaces the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN).

ICBN and ICN

International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, (ICBN) was adopted by the VIIth International Botanical Congress held in Stockholm, July1950. While the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN) was adopted by the XVIIIth International Botanical Congress held in Melbourne, Australia in July 2011.

Diethylene tetramine penta acetic acid (DTPA) being a chelating agent is used in the determination of available Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn. When the soil is shaken with a solution of DTPA, it combines with metal ions in the solution and form soluble complexes of Fe++, Mn++, Cu++ and Zn++. The CaCl2 and triethanolamine (TEA) solution slightly raise and buffer the soil pH and mitigates the effect of Ca++ and Mg++.

The Kjeldahl method is mainly divided into three main steps. This method needs to be carried out in proper sequence. 

In Bray’s method a mixture of ammonium fluoride and hydrochloric acid (NH4F + HCl) act as the extracting agent. It works in two ways, firstly, the hydrogen ions from HCl have a solubilising effect, especially on Ca-P, which makes phosphate get extracted. Secondly, the fluoride ions (from ammonium fluoride) complex with the Al3+ and Fe3+ ions, thereby releasing the Al and Fe bound phosphorous into the extract.

Olsen P were found to bear a quadratic relationship, with Olsen’s extractant underestimating the content in phytoavailable P of soils with high Olsen P contents relatively to soils with low contents. The ‘‘change point’’ at which phytoavailable P began to increase rapidly per unit change in Olsen P was 53 mg Olsen P kg–1 soil. For the acid soils, a significant quadratic relationship was found between the amount of P desorbed to water and Olsen P at the three soil:solution ratios studied.

Potassium is extracted from the soil with the help of suitable extractant CH3COONH4 by shacking followed by filtration or centrifugation & is determined in the extract using flame photometer. The analysis photometer is based on the measurement of the intensity of characteristic lime emission given by the element to be determined .

Soil is shaken with 0.15 % CaCl2 solution. Chloride ions displace adsorbed sulphate during extraction. Calcium ions suppress the extraction of soil organic matter and hence eliminate the contamination caused by extractable organic S.

Pore space or porosity : Porosity is an index of the relative pore volume in the soil or volume fraction of pores. Its value generally lies in the range of 0.3-0.36 (30-60%). Coarse textured soils tend to be less porus than fine textured soil, though the mean size of individual pores is greater in the former than in the latter. The total porosity, in any case, reveals nothing about the pore size distribution which itself is an important property.

The determination of carotenoids typically involves extraction followed by spectrophotometric analysis.

Chlorophyll content serves as a vital indicator of plant health and photosynthetic efficiency, with higher levels reflecting robust photosynthesis and overall plant vigor, while lower levels may signal nutrient deficiencies, diseases, or environmental stresses. Assessing chlorophyll content helps evaluate plant productivity, as chlorophyll is essential for absorbing light and converting solar energy into chemical energy. Additionally, the chlorophyll-a to chlorophyll-b ratio provides insights into how plants adapt to various light conditions, revealing their light absorption efficiency and ability to cope with environmental changes. Measuring chlorophyll on a fresh weight, dry weight, and leaf area basis allows researchers and agronomists to gauge the effectiveness of agricultural practices such as fertilization, irrigation, and crop management strategies. It also aids in monitoring the impact of stress factors like drought, salinity, pollution, or pest attacks, which is crucial for developing strategies to enhance crop resilience.

Reagents: 80% acetone: - 80 ml acetone + 20 ml water = 100 ml

Procedure for Chlorophyll Extraction from Leaves

1. Sample Collection: Collect fresh, healthy leaves from the plant to be analyzed. Ensure that the leaves are free from dust, pests, and diseases.

2. Preparation of Leaf Samples: Rinse the leaves thoroughly with distilled water to remove any surface contaminants. Pat them dry with a clean paper towel. Weigh an exact amount (usually around 0.1-0.5 grams) of fresh leaf tissue using an analytical balance. Record the fresh weight accurately.

Electrical conductivity of the soil is the quantity of electricity in coulombs that passes per second per cm3 of the soil solution under an applied potential difference of 1 volt. It is written as EC in abbreviated form and is expressed in millimohs cm-1 or dS m-1 (deciSiemen m-1). Current flows in the soil solution due to presence of soluble salts like Cl- , SO2- 4 and NO3 - of Na+, K+ Ca++ and Mg++. These salts fully dissociate in water to their constituent cations and anions and the current is carried by those cations anions in the soil solution.

Procedure

• Take 1 g soil in a 50 ml beaker

• Add 25 ml 1M KCL solution 

Reagents

• Buffer solution : Dissolve 67.5 g of Ammo. Chloride in 200 ml distilled water. Add 570 ml Ammonium solution. The volume make up to 1 ltr.

• EBT : 0.2 g in 25 ml methanol.

Leaf Relative Water Content (RWC) is a key indicator of plant water status and is used to assess water stress, physiological health, and the efficiency of water use in plants. It reflects the amount of water in the leaf relative to its maximum water capacity and is a useful measure in plant physiology and stress studies.

The lime requirement (LR) of an acid soil is the amount of lime needed to neutralize the acidity from an initial condition to some target soil pH, like 7.0. Different methods are used to calculate a LR for specific soils. Lime requirement tests will always recommend adding enough lime to neutralize all the acidity associated with soil pH, much of the salt-replaceable acidity, and some of the residual acidity.
