1. Introduction

Herbarium is simply a dried and pressed collection of plants arranged in an accepted sequence of classification (Lawrence 1951, Shetler 1969). It can be a very useful teaching aid or an absorbing hobby (Cronquist 1966). According to Fosberg and Sachet (1965) “A modern herbarium is a great filing system for information about plants, both primarily in the form of actual specimens of plants and secondarily in the form of published information, pictures and recorded notes”. It is also a research, training and service institution that serves as a reference centre, documentation facility and data store house (Radford 1986). It is now well recognized that a herbarium is a vast reservoir of facts about plants. The word ‘Herbarium’ was originally applied, not to a collection of plants but to a book dealing with medicinal herbs. Tournefort in about 1700 used the term as an equivalent to ‘Hortus Siccus’ which was later on adopted by Linnaeus (Stearn 1957). The present concept and development of herbarium is due to efforts of botanists for more than four centuries. The concept of herbarium has been changing continuously, which in turn, has affected the gradual development of herbarium and herbarium practices.

For practical reasons, the classification of the world’s flora is primarily based on herbarium material and the literature associated with it. Despite its limitations, a herbarium has certain advantages over living collections. It is usually only in the herbarium that we can compare all the related species of a genus in the same place, in the same state and at the same time (Davis 1961).

The herbarium material, therefore, formed the foundation of all botanical studies. We should, therefore, realise that herbaria are the custodians of enormous data pertaining to plants. They are usually seen as old-fashioned and expensive “stamp collection” without realising their paramount role in biological sciences. However, the world-wide rise of interest in the field of conservation, biodiversity and bioprospection offer a new chance for herbaria. Furthermore, computers offer a golden opportunity to raise the status of herbarium taxonomy by making routine curatorial procedures more efficient.

Although Jain and Rao (1976) elaborately discussed the methods of field collections, identification and preservation in the herbarium, the salient features of herbarium in up dated form with various procedures followed in Indian context are discussed in this chapter.

Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) is a vigorous tropical evergreen flowering shrub valued for its large, colourful and attractive blooms. In India, its flowers are widely used for religious offerings, particularly in temple worship, as well as for ornamental and loose flower purposes. The chapter introduces its origin, distribution, genetics, botanical characteristics and important varieties. It also highlights the crop’s medicinal and food-related importance, including the use of hibiscus products in herbal beverages and processed foods. Detailed production practices cover climate, soil, propagation, field preparation, nutrient management, irrigation and cultural operations. Major pests and diseases, harvesting, postharvest management and yield are also included for commercial cultivation.

With the sharp development of urban and industrial growth, the area under agriculture is declining year by year. On the other hand, human and animal population is increasing at a very fast rate. So, to meet the growing demand of food and fodders, a vertical increase in yield is required. Crop productivity per unit area can be enhanced with the manipulations of some agronomist practices such as sowing the crops at appropriate time, selection of suitable field for raising a crop, adoption of best planting techniques, use of appropriate seed rates, adoption of proper irrigation schedule, proper and need based application of fertilizers, adoption of zero till technology, green manuring, mulching, addition of well decomposed farm yard manure, timely and proper weed management, selection of recommended crops and crop varieties, proper control of insects and pests, adoption of marketing tips etc.

INTRODUCTION

In biology, fertility is de?ned as capacity to produce off-springs; however, in Soil Science a ?ne difference is made between a fertile and a productive soil. Soil Productivity is the ability of a soil to produce a crop using the entire spectrum of its physical, chemical and biological attributes, while Soil Fertility refers to the capacity of a soil to supply all essential plant nutrients in the desired amounts. Thus, soil fertility management is basically the nutrient management. To put it in simple words, a productive soil is always fertile, while a fertile soil may not be productive for a variety of factors, such as lack of adequate moisture in drier regions or lack of adequate air due to water-logging for most upland crops. Of late, a term ‘ Soil Health’ has been introduced. Soil Health is an assemblage of chemical, physical and biological parameters that closely relate to native or acquired production capacity and sustenance of ecologically important regulatory role (Katyal et al., 2016). It is measured against prede?ned parameters of soil’s status of fertility, compact ability, erodibility and biology. This again tends to relate soil fertility to nutrient content, availability and management.

Agriculture, also known as farming, is the production of food, fiber, animal feed, and other goods by means of growing and harvesting plants and animals. Agriculture is practiced throughout the world. Many agricultural products are used every day, from the clothes we put on in the morning to the sheets we sleep under at night. When you think of agriculture, think of the five F’s: food, fabric, forestry, farming, and flowers.

Agriculture is the science, art and industry of managing the growth of plants and animals to make use by human beings. In general, agriculture includes soil cultivation, growing and harvesting field crops, raising and breeding livestock, dairy and forest trees etc. The word agriculture is the English adaptation of Latin word i.e. agricultura, from ager, “a field” and cultura, “cultivation” in the strict sense of “tillage of the soil”. Thus, a literal reading of the word yields “tillage of a field/ fields”.

Hormones are a group of biochemical messengers that assist in transmitting signals from one part of an organism to another. The term “hormone” was first coined by Ernest Starling in 1905 after the discovery of secretin, a chemical produced in the small intestine that regulates pancreatic secretions. In 1937 Went and Thimann defined hormones as “a substance which, produced in any one part of an organism, is transferred to another part and there influences a specific physiological process”. Since then hormones are also known as chemical messengers. These intercellular messengers are produced by specialized cells of endocrine glands, generally called effectors and released into the bloodstream thereby assisting in the regulation of physiological processes in target cells. Hormones assist in the regulation of a plethora of cell functions such as maintaining homeostasis, metabolism of biomolecules, growth, and reproductive function, and controlling blood pressure and glucose levels that are essential in orchestrating an intricate body- balance. The pituitary, thyroid, pancreas, adrenal, parathyroid, and gonads (testis and ovary in males and females respectively) produce hormones. Hydroponics is a subset of hydroculture and is a method of growing plants using mineralnutrient solutions, in water, without soil. Terrestrial plants may be grown withtheir roots in the mineralnutrient solution only or in an inert medium, suchas perlite, gravel,mineral wool, expanded claypebbles or coconut husk

The techniques on hydroponics are widely used in plant sciences to elucidate several problemson nutrition. Primarily, this has been not only used to evaluate deficiency symptoms of an essential element but also used to assess waters stress effects in crop plants. There has been a considerable controversy whether such responses paralled with field responses. Though these techniques have their limitations, it is certain that it has its relevance in identifying certain genotypes relatively tolerant to some stresses such as water, O₂ and nutrition. Without entering to such debatable issue, it can be said thatwherenecessity demands, such techniques would proveuseful in demonstration purposes and evaluation of macronutrient deficiencies in tomato and maize. Thegrowing of plants in nutrient solution is called as water culture or hydroponics. These experiments in nutrient solutions are carried out to study the mineral nutrient relation of plants. By elements required for plant growth, specific deficiency symptoms can be produced in water culture experiments. Thesuccess of these experiments of producing deficiency symptoms depends upon the use of homogenous biological material and purity of culture solution in respect of different plant nutrients. Hydroponics is a subset of soilless culture. Many types of soilless culture do not use the mineral nutrient solutions required for hydroponics.

Plants that are not traditionally grown in a climate would be possible to grow usinga controlled environment systemlike hydroponics. NASA has also looked to utilize hydroponics in the space program. Ray Wheeler, plant physiologist at Kennedy Space Center’s Space Life Science Lab, believes thathydroponics will create advances within space travel. He terms this as a bioregenerative life support system.

Agriculture nowadays is facing a complex problem. It’s the rate at which we are turning arable land into non-arable. To solve this problem, we cannot simply stop farming and wait for the Earth to return to its natural state. Hence, alternative farming methods have become increasingly popular in recent years. Hydroponics is one of these options that can help produce crops without soil and other resources needed for crops to grow.

2.1 Definitions

Hydroponics is the term for growing plants without soil and in a water-based solution, the roots may be physically supported by an inert medium such as perlite, gravel, or other substrates. While it can be used to grow all kinds of crops, hydroponics is particularly effective for growing leafy vegetables, herbs and salad greens that have high water requirements, as well as for growing plants that have very shallow root systems. 

Ice nucleation: It is a process of reducing the formation of ice crystal under freezing stress, by some polysaccharides and proteins known as ice nucleators.

Imbibitions: It is a special type of diffusion when water is absorbed by solids-colloids-causing them to enormously increase in volume. The classical examples of imbibition are absorption of water by seeds and dry wood.

Immobile elements: The elements which get translocated slower inside the plant are called immobile elements. Examples: Ca, Fe and B.

Immunoassay: This is very sensitive method of identifying and or quantifying the hormones and other molecules which has antigen and antibody interaction.

Indeterminate growth: Plant growth in which the main stem continues to elongate indefinitely without being limited by a terminal inflorescence or other reproductive structure; also growth is characterized by sequential flowering from the lateral or basal buds to the central or uppermost buds.

Indole -3 acetic acid: It is naturally occurring auxin responsible for cell elongation, apical dominance and other physiological functions of auxins.

Induced dormancy: Induced dormancy in which dormancy develops as a response to external environmental factors.

1. Introduction

In the last few decades there has been worldwide revival on the use of herbal drugs/phytochemical for diverse purposes including medicinal, nutritional and as cosmetic. The revival of interest in natural drugs and the herbal products was due to the widespread belief that ‘green’ medicine is healthier than synthetic products. This has led to the rapid spurt of demand for health products like herbal tea, ginseng and such products of traditional medicine during the 1980s. The health promotion and disease prevention strategy in treatment is widely prevalent in oriental systems, especially the Indian (‘Ayurveda’, ‘Siddha’, ‘Unani and ‘Amchi’) and the Chinese systems of medicine, which are finding increasing popularity and acceptance in the world over. Because of this sweeping ‘greenwave’ a large number of herbal drugs and the plant derived herbal products are sold in the health food shops all over the developed countries. Export– Import Bank reports revealed that the global trade of plant-derived and plant originated products is around US $60 billion (with growth of 7% per annum) where India holds stake of US $1 billion which is expected to reach 3 trillion US$ by the end of 2015 (Pandey et al. 2008). These targets can be achieved by providing scientifically validated, safe and standardized herbal products in domestic and international markets.

Standardization is an important step for the establishment of a consistent biological activity, a consistent chemical profile, or simply a quality assurance programme for production and manufacturing of herbal drugs. It is now well known that the pharmacological activity of a medicinal plants is due to the presence of certain bioactive phytochemicals, which are either primary or secondary metabolites. Amount of these compounds are controlled and conditioned by a variety of factors such as its genetic predisposition, habitat of the plant agro climatic conditions, season and also the stage of growth and development of the plant etc. Therefore, it is desirable to study the effect of these on secondary metabolites to get the right/optimum amount of secondary metabolites in the plant part/raw drug. The formation of herbal drug based on the traditional knowledge using modern tools is the requirement of the present day. WHO’s specific guidelines for the assessment of the safety, efficacy and quality of herbal medicines as a prerequisite for global harmonization are of utmost importance. Considering the importance of the herbal drugs/products, quality assurance of raw drug/formulation and developing botanical and chemical parameters for assuring their quality, have become major riders on the pharma or drug research and industry.

1. Introduction
Global food security threatened by climate change is one of the most important challenges in the 21st century to supply sufficient food for the increasing population on diminishing agricultural land while sustaining the already stressed environment. Global agricultural production is highly vulnerable as key crops such as maize, wheat, rice, and legumes will be negatively affected by climate change. The study showed that each degree Celsius increase in global mean temperature is estimated to reduce the average global yield of cereal crops by 6-15%. Further, predicted changes in climate may affect water availability and key soil processes such as respiration and nitrogen (N) mineralization, thus key ecosystem functions such as carbon (C) storage, nutrients, and water availability. Although crop growth simulation models are being utilized to understand the impact of climate change scenarios on aboveground biomass, the roots and their architecture, which are essential for plant adaptation and productivity, need to be studied more due to the difficulty of observing them during the plant life cycle. The root system and its architecture are highly responsive to external environmental conditions such as soil moisture, nutrients, temperature, pH and microbial communities; therefore, it is high time to study below-ground responses to future climate scenarios. The study of plant roots represents a highly promising yet underexplored area of research related to plant growth. While the aerial parts of plants have received significant attention due to their visibility and accessibility, the underground portions have been largely overlooked due to the challenges in observing and sampling them and the disruption caused when roots are removed from the soil. Plants’ efficiency of water and mineral nutrient uptake largely depends on how effectively new root tips penetrate soil horizons and how these roots eventually die and decompose. The plant’s ability to access soil resources depends on the size of its root system and the activity of its growing root tips. Root growth is influenced by both genetic factors and environmental conditions. For example, fine root dynamics vary with the seasons, with increased vegetative growth and nutrient release occurring during the monsoon months. (Kumar et al., 2020). Further research is needed to assess how different tillage and water management practices affect rooting behaviours, soil water extraction, and nutrient uptake.

Introduction

Climate change and agriculture are interrelated issues, both of which take place on a global scale. Global warming is projected to have significant impacts on conditions affecting agriculture, including fluctuation of temperature, carbon dioxide, glacial run-off, precipitation and the interaction of these factors (Sehgal et al., 2006; Kalra et al., 2008). These conditions determine the carrying capacity of the biosphere to produce enough food for the human population and for domesticated animals. The overall effect of climate change on agriculture will depend on the balance of these effects. Assessment of the effects of global climate changes on agriculture might help to properly anticipate and adapt farming to maximize agricultural production. Droughts, which have frequented different parts of India through the history, have been responsible for many famines, rural poverty and migration despite development of impressive irrigation potentials. Similarly, abnormal temperatures, high velocity winds and humidity during critical stages are known to significantly affect crop growth and development, pest incidences and epidemics, demand on irrigation resources and finally food production. Over the past few decades, the main-induced changes in the climate of the earth due to multifarious human activities linked to develop have become the focus of scientific and social attention. The predicted changes to agriculture vary greatly by region and crop. Findings for wheat and rice are reported here: The study found that increase in temperature (by about 2 ºC) reduces potential grain yield in most places. Regions with higher potential productivity (such as northern India) were relatively less impacted by climate change than areas with lower potential productivity (the reduction in yields was much smaller). Climate change is also predicted to lead to boundary changes in areas suitable for growing certain crops. (Kalra et al., 2002-2003). Reduction in yields as a result of climate change is predicted to be more pronounced for rainfed crops (as opposed to irrigated crops) and under limited water supply situations because there are no coping mechanisms for rainfall variability. The difference in yield is influenced by baseline climate. In sub-tropical environments, the decrease in potential wheat yield ranged from 1.5 to 5.8%, while in tropical areas the decrease was relatively higher, suggesting that warmer regions can expect greater crop losses.

Introduction

Our soil resource is generally taken for granted for many uses. Most people don’t realize the importance of the resource and that it is fundamental for farming/agriculture. Without high quality soils, agriculture production cannot be achieved on a sustainable basis to meet ever growing demand. Thus, conservation agricultural practices are capable of improving soil health by increasing organic carbon, aggregation, improving infiltration and minimizing erosion losses.

One of the most dangerous ecological crises being faced by all living organism now-a-days is the pollution of the environment. It is easier to describe pollution rather than to define it. It is presumed that the environment in past was more or less pure. But due to various activities of man such as industrialization, urbanization, agricultural practices etc, composition of the environment gets changed which is called environmental pollution. Any substance that creates pollution is called ‘pollutant’. There are different types of pollution among which pollution caused by toxic level of heavy metal pollutants is called heavy metal pollution.

Heavy metal pollution is a problematic field of research and is gaining immense importance now-a-days. We have 104 elements in the periodic classification of which 80 are metals. According to Passow et al. (1961), heavy metals are those having densities more than five (5 g cc^-1) and atomic weight twenty three. The term ‘heavy metal’ is imprecise but is widely used although others such as ‘toxic metal’, ‘trace element’ are possible alternatives. Sources of these heavy metals are varying; some of these are encountered in water, air effluent, solid waste and sewage. They are emitted out from various sources e.g. waste water from electroplating industry (Cr, Ni), air emission from fluorescent lamps (Cd, Be), paint pigment waste (Pb, Cr), auto-exhaust emissions (Pb, Te) etc.

Loose flowers occupy an important position in Indian floriculture because of their extensive use in garlands, Veni, Rangoli, worship, festivals, weddings, decoration and perfumery. Crops such as marigold, jasmine, chrysanthemum, tuberose, rose, crossandra and gomphrena provide livelihood opportunities for small and marginal farmers and rural workers. This chapter discusses the cultural, economic and employment significance of loose flowers, along with value-addition opportunities in essential oils, natural pigments, floral waters, cosmetics and food products. It also examines the national and international scenario, production constraints, postharvest challenges, market opportunities, emerging technologies and prospects for entrepreneurship in the loose flower sector.

Crop physiology is the study of the ways in which plant physiological processes are integrated to cause whole plant responses in communities. The subject matter of crop physiology includes the ways in which the knowledge of plant physiology is applied for better management of crops.

Genetic potential of a plant and its interaction with environmental factors decides its growth and development by influencing or modifying certain internal processes. Plant physiology studies about these internal processes and their functional aspects. It helps to understand various biological processes of the plants like photosynthesis, respiration, transpiration, translocation, nutrient uptake, plant growth regulation through hormones and such other processes which have profound impact on crop yield. Many aspects of Agriculture can benefit from more intensive research in plant physiology to provide practical solutions in agriculture. Understanding the physiological aspects of seed germination, seedling growth, crop establishment, vegetative development, flowering, fruit and seed setting and crop maturity provides a reasonable scientific base for effective monitoring and beneficial manipulation of these phenomenon’s. Studying this phenomenon with a view to develop better crop management practices forms the subject matter of crop physiology. Later on several research works were carried out to understand the processes like translocation of food materials, their partitioning towards economic yield, storage mechanisms, physiology of flowering, effect of stressful environmental factors on crop growth and development, role of plant growth regulators in increasing the crop productivity etc. All these areas have enriched the knowledge of physiological processes and their role in deciding the crop yield. Crop physiology covers different topics such as seed germination and proper establishment of seedling depends upon various internal and external factors. Knowledge in seed physiology helps in understanding of different physiological and morphological changes that occur during germination. Any deviation in these processes causes seed dormancy. The dormant condition of the seed, bars immediate use of harvested seed for next crop which is important in intensive agriculture. By understanding the causes and effects of this problem, crop physiologists have come up with different methods of breaking the seed dormancy. Nutriophysiology is yet another important area to understand crop physiology. For the healthy growth of a crop, around 16 essential elements are required. Knowledge of nutriophysiology has helped in identification of essential nutrients, ion uptake mechanisms, their deficiency symptoms and corrective measures. It also helps to check the toxicity symptoms of various nutrients.

Assessment of a soil’s fertility status involves an estimation of its available nutrient status i.e., the portion or amount of nutrient directly available in soil for subsequent uptake by crop plant. This exercise commonly referred to as soil testing and is used to arrive at optimum fertilizer application ratio. The need for estimation of available nutrient arises because only a small fraction of what the soil contains is the total nutrient content of the soil. Soil test is calibrated by correlating them with crop response and the result from the basis for making fertilizer recommendations.

Estimation of nutrient contents and forms in materials that are involved in nutrient supply and dynamics is a conical step towards planning scientific nutrient management. In this content, both soil and plant testing information come out of the interpretation of analysis assumes a greater value when their concentrations and amounts can relate to soil fertility, nutrient availability, plant growth, yield and quality of the crop produce.

What is a Library?

Library is an aggregate of features and methods that allow you to take many actions without getting your own code written.

For instance, the libraries that you have to know are if you work with data, numpy, scipy, pandas, etc. They have very simple data processing functions that save you time for small tricks.

There is no plant in this world which is uneconomical/not useful. Medicinal plants have been considered as important therapeutic aid for alleviating aliments of human kind. The WHO estimates that 80% of people living in developing countries rely almost exclusively on traditional medicines for their primary health care needs. Aromatic plants are used for essential oils - volatile material extracted from plants or plant parts usually by stream distillation and used in flavours and fragrances for food, soap, detergents, perfumes, lotions etc. Spices are the dry part of a plant such as roots, leaves and seeds which impart to food a certain flavour and pungent stimuli. Spices contain variable amount of fat, protein, carbohydrates, fibres, minerals and vitamins.

Introduction

Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.) is the most widely grown type of millet and it is an important staple food grain crop for millions of people in arid and semi arid regions of the world. Pearl millet is very well adapted crop to growing areas characterized by drought, low soil fertility, and high temperature. It is also performs well in soils with high salinity or low pH. Because of its tolerance to difficult growing conditions, it can be grown in areas where other cereal crops, such as wheat or maize, would not survive. Physiologically, it is a C₄ plant which imparts it potential to grow under hot and dry climatic conditions. Among cereals, it is highly responsive to fertilizers and has highest water use efficiency. Pearl millet is being grown as dual purpose crop for both grain and fodder in dry areas like Rajasthan where animal production is complimentary with crop production. Pearl millet is also a good source of important essential minerals for human health like Fe and Zn hence it is useful to alleviating malnutrition.

Introduction

Plants are responsive to the applied Non-scheduled caste, which constitute most of the vital macromolecules and metabolites related to its vegetative and reproductive cycle. The applied fertilizer N enhances crop productivity per unit area, as agricultural soil deficient in N worldwide. The fertilizer application is thus considered essential to meet the requirement of the burgeoning population, particularly in the developing countries (Abrol et al., 1999; Chanda and Sati, 2005). The farmers practicize heavy dressing of N-fertilizers in crop fields for high productivity, which has resulted into world including Indian sub-continent and China have resulted into the excessive use of N-fertilizers intending to maximize crop yield. Decrease in the organic fertilizer input and depletion of micronutrients in intensive cultivation zones have caused a decline or stagnation in the crop productivity, which  has been attempted with a further loading of soluble chemical fertilizers (Maleshwar, 2003; Kumar and Yadav, 2003; Anonymous, 2004; Chanda and Sati, 2005; Abdin et al., 2006).

Sustainable agricultural production is endangered by several ecological factors, including biotic & abiotic stresses. Biotic stress is the stress as a result of damage done to an organism by other living organisms. The agents of biotic stress are fungi, bacteria, virus, nematodes, insects, weeds & other plants which reduces quality and production of crops. These challenging environmental factors may have adverse effects on future agriculture production. Breeding resistant cultivars is considered as the best strategy to mitigate the effect of biotic stress. It is durable, economical & environment friendly and provide broad-spectrum resistance. Widely cultivated but susceptible genotypes can be improved by introgression of resistance genes from donor genotype into the background of recurrent genotype by different breeding strategies. In modern agriculture, conventional crop-breeding strategies alone are inadequate for achieving the increasing population’s food demand on a sustainable basis. The advancement of molecular genetics and related technologies are promising tools for the selection of new crop species with resistance genes. Transfer of several genes or quantitative trait loci (QTL) with potential characteristics into a single widely cultivated genotype is possible through the process of marker assisted selection (MAS). Gene pyramiding through MAS have accelerated the development of durable resistant/tolerant lines with high accuracy in the shortest period of time. With marker assisted backcross breeding (MABB), a major gene can be precisely targeted, the genome of the recurrent parent can be recovered fast, and linkage drag can be reduced. Genomic selection (GS) allows selection for multiple traits directly in the genome. These techniques help in identifying plants with two or more genes by employing gene-linked markers without the need for repeated testing in each generation during the development of pyramided lines and hence shorten the time of breeding program.

Indicators are the natural or synthetic chemical compounds that are used to detect the equivalence point in a volumetric analysis where unknown compound in a solution form is quantitatively estimated with the help of a known standard solution. The equivalence point, also known as the stoichiometric end point, is the point or stage of a titration reaction where the equivalent amount of the reacting substances are mixed together, and this point is identified by monitoring the rate of change in pH, conductivity, flow of current, adsorption, fluorescence, changing of solution colour, occurrence or disappearance of turbidity, flocculation or deflocculation, etc.

A new analytical technique called inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy has been used for simultaneous multi element analysis of biological materials and soils (Hou and Jones 2000; Wikipedia, 2010; Bradford and Cook, 1997). This technique offers advantages over AAS and other multi-element methods because matrix problems are eliminated or minimized through use of the high temperature argon plasma. Apart from multi- element capability at all concentration levels, plasmas are noted for relative freedom from chemical and ionization interferences that are common with AAS, and detection limits are equal to or better than AAS, depending on the element to be analyzed. Elements such as Al, P, S and B, which are either poorly measured at low concentrations or not possible by AAS, are readily determined with higher sensitivity by ICP.

The total energy of a molecule consists of translation, vibrational, rotational and electronic energies. Transition among different types of energy levels occurs in different regions of electromagnetic spectrum. Transitions between rotational and vibrational energy levels of the ground state molecules give rise to absorption bands throughout the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Organic molecules are characterized by possessing bonds and groups that vibrate independently of each other. Thus, initially infrared spectrometry was used for identification of functional groups of organic molecules. There is lot of ambiguity in the interpretation of infrared spectra of organic matter preparations due to complexity and diversity of the components of soil organic matter. But if used carefully it can provide information on: (i) nature, reactivity and structural arrangement of oxygen-containing functional groups, (ii) presence of protein and carbohydrate constituents, (iii) presence or absence of inorganic impurities (metallic ions, clays, etc in humic fractions), (iv) the amount of different soil organic matter components, and (v) interaction of organic components with pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, etc.

On the contrary to organic molecules, minerals tend to have few isolated vibrating groups. It can be used for mineralogical analysis when used in conjunction with x-ray diffraction and other similar techniques.

Infrared spectrometry is used in the identification of inorganic compounds including minerals which have well-defined absorption bands in determining- (i) whetherlayer silicate isdioctahedral or trioctahedral in composition, (ii) in studying isomorphous substitution, (iii) hydration of minerals, and (iv) in quantitative analysis. Infrared spectrometer provides information about nature and identify of inorganic compounds that are amorphous in x-ray diffraction analysis.

Plant disease causes losses estimated for 20-40 per cent of global crop. Climate change has a very complex effect on plant-pathogen interactions, since environmental conditions affect the whole disease triangle: they modify plant susceptibility, the biological cycles of parasites and pathogens, and hostpathogen physiology and interactions. Innovative plant protection strategies in horticultural crops encompass a wide range of techniques and approaches aimed at safeguarding plants from pests, diseases, and environmental stresses in a sustainable and effective manner. These strategies are essential for ensuring the productivity, quality, and resilience of horticultural crops while minimizing negative impacts on the environment and human health.

Climate change, including increased temperature, CO levels, acid rain, and tropospheric O 3 2 , stresses plants and lowers their pathogen response. While higher CO 2 reduces stomata density, acid rain and O weaken cuticle protection, aiding pathogen entry.

This chapter serves as an essential primer on R, providing step-by-step instructions for installing both R and RStudio, one of the most popular integrated development environments (IDEs) for R. 16.1 Balance and Weighing

16.1.1 Principle of Functioning of a Balance

It is one of the important tools used in the laboratory and one should have thorough knowledge aboutitsassembly, use and care,otherwise it may be the initialstep for introducing error in any physical or chemical analysis. Every balancehas its maximum load limit and sensitivity depending upon its construction.

Essentially balance may be regarded as a rigid beam, BC having a central fulcrum, O and two arms of equal length, d₁, d₂ (Fig.16.1). Theboth ends of beam have prism edges upon which the balance pans are suspendedby means of suitable suspension.

The analytical work in a soil-testing laboratory mainly involves standard chemical methods, suitably modified to permit handling of a large number of soil samples with the required degree of accuracy and speed. Many of the analytical operations are carried out more conveniently with help of common as well as sophisticated instruments.

The various instrumental measurements followed in soil and water-testing work in the laboratory can be broadly divided into two groups:

1) Determination of pH and electrical conductivity

2) Colorimetric, spectrophotometric

Agriculture is not only the main source of employment, income and food for over 70% of the population but also the main culture of the rural families. But the linear growth in population and unplanned colonization lead to rapid fragmentation of land holdings and shrinkage in fertile cultivated land. In India, more than 70% of the total population of the country still live in villages and mainly depend on agriculture and/or related enterprises. Marginal and small farmers constitute more than 84% of the 115 million operational holdings in India which are cultivating only 29% of the arable land (Singh et al., 2011). 

The introduction of high-yielding varieties of wheat and rice, the development of intensive cereal–cereal rotations (rice–wheat, rice–rice, hybrid maize–wheat), application of high doses of N (above 100 kg N ha^–1 to each crop) without adequate P and K application, increased use of high-analysis fertilizer (urea and diammonium phosphate in place of ammonium sulphate and superphosphate) and ignoring the application of organic manures led to heavy depletion of P, K, S, Zn and other plant nutrients, which led to wide-spread de?ciencies of P, S and Zn in Indian soils. These de?ciencies of nutrients led to focus on integrated nutrient management.

Horticulture is an intensive branch of agricultural and plant sciences concerned with the production, management, improvement, utilization, and marketing of high-value crops. It encompasses fruits, vegetables, flowers, ornamentals, plantation crops, spices, medicinal plants, and nursery crops. This chapter introduces the meaning, scope, importance, history, and major branches of horticulture. It explains how horticulture differs from general agriculture through its emphasis on quality, intensive management, perishability, and value addition. The chapter also highlights the economic, nutritional, social, and ecological contributions of horticulture and traces its development from traditional cultivation to modern technologies such as protected cultivation, precision farming, hydroponics, and artificial intelligence.

WHAT IS PLANT?

A. Definition - by most definitions, a plant:

is multi-cellular;

is non-motile

has eukaryotic cells

has cell walls comprised of cellulose

is autotrophic; and

exhibits alternation of generations - has a distinctive diploid (sporophyte) and haploid (gametophyte) phase.

Abiotic stresses are major constraints for many crop plants in specific areas over the globe which limits the crop production. Dudal (1976) estimated that only 10% of world’s arable land may be categorized as free from stress. The rapid change in environmental conditions likely to override the adaptive potential of plants, this environmental changes mainly originated from anthropogenic activities, which has caused soil and air pollution, plant are exposed to natural climatic or edaphic stresses, such as, high irradiation, heat, chilling, freezing, drought, excess water and waterlogging and nutrient imbalance. Among abiotic stresses drought is the main abiotic factor as it affects 26% of arable area (Table 1.1). Water stress is a single most severe, limitation to the productivity of rice in the rainfed ecosystem (Widawgky and O’Toole, 1990). Mineral toxicity/deficiencies are second in importance. Among mineral toxicity, salinity is wide spread and is estimated to affect 10% of the world land surface (Richards, 1995).

All living organisms are basically made up of chemical components. The chemistry, composition and energy management of living organisms is what we call biochemistry. It tries to explain life processes at the molecular level. Although different organisms differ outwardly in their life processes, there are striking similarities in executing the different tasks. Genetic code, metabolic pathways, enzymes, coenzymes and even regulatory mechanisms are similar to a large extent in all the living organisms. Living organisms have certain extraordinary properties. They can grow, respond to stimuli and replicate themselves with high fidelity. All these activities are ultimately interpretable in chemical terms. The components that constitute organisms are all inanimate. The lifeless organic molecules with appropriate complexity and properties make a living being.

Biochemistry helps us understand how the inanimate molecules that constitute living organisms interact with each other to maintain life. The basic life processes or the biochemistry remains broadly the same in either the unicellular microorganism or the higher organisms such as the plants or the human beings. Life is nothing but thousands of ordered chemical reactions. In other words, chemistry is the logic of all biological phenomena.

Crop production broadly depends on the fertility of the soil where a crop is raised. There are several factors like the kind and quality of seed, climate, water supply, and plant protection measures etc. that affect the crop production. Among these factors, the fertility status of the soil largely determines the ultimate yield even if all these factors are optimum for crop production. A clear distinction should be made between soil fertility and soil productivity. Soil fertility deals with the inherent capacity of soil to provide nutrients in adequate amounts and in proper balance, for the growth of specified plants when other growth factors such as light, water and temperature, and the physical condition of the soil are favourable. Soil productivity is concerned with the capability of soil to produce a specified plant or plant parts or a sequence of plants under well defined and specified systems of management inputs and environmental conditions, viz. climatic conditions. It does not mean that a fertile soil is always productive. A fertile soil, under a bad management system, may be unproductive for a crop. In this book, plant nutrient elements and their available forms, functions and deficiency symptoms are briefly described for the better understanding of soil testing and fertilizer recommendation.

The role of plant nutrients in crop production is well established. Estimation of nutrients contents and forms in materials, which are involved in nutrient supply and dynamics is a crucial step in scientific nutrient management and crop production. There are 16 essential plant nutrients. These are carbon (C), hydrogen (H), oxygen (O), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), sulphur (S), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), boron (B), molybdenum (Mo) and chlorine (Cl). These nutrients have to be available to the crops in quantities as required for a yield target. Any limiting or deficient nutrient (s) will limit crop growth.

This chapter describes fundamental terminology and lays the foundational framework for the course. It offers a general understanding of statistics, its purpose, and its role in addressing diverse problems across various fields of study. Additionally, it explains the rationale behind choosing R software as a powerful tool for data analysis.

Basic Concepts and Terminology

Statistics is an essential tool in agriculture, helping researchers to collect, analyze, interpret, and present numerical data related to plant traits, and agricultural practices. The fundamental goal is to make informed decisions and enhance crop yields, quality, and resilience.

To illustrate, researchers choose to work with a sample due to practical considerations, such as time and cost constraints. For instance, in a field with 10,000 crop plants, a researcher aims to determine the average plant height in the field. To conserve time and resources, they randomly select 200 plants from various locations within the field. These 200 plants constitute a sample from the entire population of 10,000 plants. By analyzing the height observed in the sample, the researcher can conclude the average height of the entire crop field.

20.1 Exchange Capacity

Soil colloidal particles carry both negative and positive charges on their surface which attract and hold equivalent amount of oppositely charged ions to their surface. The total number of negative charges present on a given mass of soil or capacity of a given mass of soil to exchange cations or total number of cation held by a given mass of soil is termed as cation exchange capacity (CEC). Similarly, the capacity of a soil to retain anions is known as anion exchange capacity (AEC). The ion exchange capacity of a soil depends upon the type and amount of colloidal particle (clay and organic matter) present in the soil. Ion exchange capacity (CEC/AEC) is expressed as milliequivalent ion (cation/ anion, respectively) per 100 g of soil (meq/100g). It is also expressed as centimoles of charge (positive/negative) per kg of soil [cmol (±) / kg]. Meq/ 100g = cmol (±) / kg of soil.

20.1.1 Determination of Cation Exchange Capacity of Soil Principle

Soil is first saturated with normal ammonium acetate (pH 7.0). Excess ammonium (NH₄⁺) ions and displaced cations are then removed by washing with alcohol. The amount of NH₄⁺ ions retained by the soil is measured by steam distillation of NH₄-saturated soil with MgO. During distillation evolved ammonia is absorbed in a boric acid solution as ammonium borate and the amount ammonium borate formed is determined by titration with standard sulphuric acid in presence of mixed indicator.

8.1. What is an ion exchange reaction and its application in soil system

Ion exchange is a reversible chemical reaction between two substances, either between two electrolytes or between an electrolyte solution and a solid complex as well as between two solid phases (if in close contact with each other), where ions of equal charge may be interchanged in equivalent proportion.

Organic colloids and inorganic micelles (clays) are sites of ion exchange. Soil contains silicate clay minerals which exhibit charges due to isomorphous substitution as well as due to the pH dependant charges for ionisation of hydrogen and hydroxide functional groups. Organic matter present in soil also contributes to the pH dependent charges due to the presence of various active functional groups. Thus, the organic and inorganic colloids present in soil bear positive or negative charges. Electric charge on soil particles is neutralized by equivalent amount of oppositely charged exchangeable counter ions, held by coulomb forces and van der Waals forces. Ca⁺², Mg⁺², H⁺, K⁺, Na⁺, NH₄ ⁺, Al⁺³, Fe⁺³, Fe⁺², Mn⁺², etc. are the common cations present in soil where Ca⁺² serves as the dominant ion. However, Na⁺ and Al(OH)₂ ⁺ are the dominant cations found in the exchangeable phase in strong alkali and strong acid soils, respectively. SO₄ ^- 2, Cl^-, HCO₃ ^-1, NO₃ ^- etc. are the most common anions found in soil to neutralize positively charged soil colloids.

9.1. INTRODUCTION

Iron (Fe) is important component of a plant’s energy-power house chlorophyll. It also interacts with all the major enzymes and proteins at higher concentration in the soil, and it is toxic to plants. Fe-toxicity creates a range of nutrient disorders and deficiencies of P, K, Ca, Mg, Mn and Zn in plants. These elements were reported to play decisive roles in manifesting toxicity symptoms in rice (Sahu, 1968; Ottow et al., 1983; Yamauchi, 1989; Sahrawat et al., 1996). Excess absorption and translocation of Fe in the rice plants led to toxicity, which has been a major limiting factor in wetland rice. Average yield loss due to Fe-toxicity accounts to 50% and in fact ranges from 10-100% (Brigit et al., 1993).

Water is one of the most critical resources in horticultural production, directly influencing plant growth, flowering, fruit development, and quality. This chapter introduces principles of irrigation scheduling, water requirements, soil–water relationships, and efficient water application. Surface, sprinkler, drip, micro-irrigation, fertigation, and other modern systems are discussed in relation to crop type and environmental conditions. The chapter emphasizes irrigation efficiency, root-zone moisture management, water quality, salinity, drainage, and conservation. Proper irrigation scheduling reduces water losses and prevents both drought stress and excessive wetness. Modern technologies such as sensors, automated irrigation, and precision fertigation are also considered important tools for sustainable horticultural water management.

1. Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid (DNA)

DNA is a genetic material, originally confined to nucleus of a cell. In plants, some DNAs are also present in mitochondria and chloroplasts. DNAs are vital macro molecules having high molecular weight.

Isolation of plant DNA is cumbersome or difficult primarily because of the presence of a number of secondary plant products. Secondly, a protocol, which is found suitable for isolation of DNA in one plant, may not work in other. The efficiency of DNA extraction depends on many factors, such as sample material, ionic conditions of the extraction medium and type of lysing agent used etc.

There are two methods, one developed by Dellaporta et al. (1983) and the other by Murray and Thompson (1980) which are most commonly used for extraction of DNA in a number of plant genera.

Murray and Thompson’s (1980) method is described here below with minor modifications.

1. Mitochondria

Mitochondria are known as the “Power House” of a cell because they are the site of ATP production. In addition, they are also involved with photorespiration and oxidation of fatty acids and work in association with peroxisomes, glyoxysomes and chloroplasts.

Isolation of intact mitochondria is rather difficult. This is because the cell walls of plant tissue are rigid as compared to the single-layered wall surrounding the mitochondria. A significant fraction of mitochondria suffer structural damage during the process of tissue homogenization. Therefore, the pelleted mitochondria need further purification by sucrose gradient centrifugation.

Mitochondria can be isolated from green as well as etiolated leaf; however, the latter is preferred to obtain higher yield of mitochondria (Moore and Proudlove, 1983).

Ixora is an evergreen flowering shrub valued for its attractive clusters of brightly coloured flowers and its suitability for loose flower production, religious offerings, garlands and landscaping. The crop performs well under tropical and subtropical conditions and is appreciated for its extended flowering period. This chapter presents the botanical characteristics, origin, distribution, genetics and important varieties of Ixora. It discusses suitable climate and soil conditions, propagation, land preparation, planting, nutrient management, irrigation and cultural practices. Special attention is given to pruning and canopy management for improving flowering. The chapter also covers important insect pests and diseases, harvesting, postharvest handling and yield, providing practical guidance for commercial Ixora production.
