Tools of Public Awareness

The public awareness and awakening can be created among people through various means and ways. In this age of computers and communication, science and technology, information and advertisements there are several quick and effective means of spreading news. The electronic media, the press, education institution, religious, adult education, moral education, spiritual education, religious discourse etc. all are essentially complementary to each other. The governments and the policy makers can only work forwards environmental preservation on political basis. The media, if work passively on pro environmental issues, awareness can be effectively generated among people.

Radioactive pollution is largely attributable to radioactivity, a natural property of certain elements, such as radium, uranium, thorium, etc. of spontaneously emitting protons (alpha particles), electrons (beta particles), and gamma rays (short-wave electromagnetic waves) through the disintegration of their atomic nuclei (nuclides).

An alpha particle consists of two protons and two neutrons, which is akin to a helium nucleus. Alpha particles travel at a very slow speed, whereas gamma rays propagate at the speed of light. The alpha particles have less penetration power than the beta and gamma rays. In human tissues, alpha particles can penetrate up to a depth of about 0.005 to 0.008 cm. The gamma rays, on the other hand, are the most penetrating and can easily pass through a human body without striking anything in between. The high penetration power of gamma rays is because they have no charge; therefore, they do not interact with anything as the charged alpha particles would do

Introduction

Climate change is a statistically significant variation in either the mean state of the climate or in its variability, persisting for an extended period (typically decades or longer). Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures. Eleven years from 1995-2006 rank among the twelve warmest years in the instrumental record of global surface temperature (since 1850). The 100-year linear trend (1906-2005) of 0.74 [0.56 to 0.92] °C is larger than the corresponding trend of 0.6 [0.4 to 0.8] °C (1901-2000) and over the 21st century average temperature of earth surface is likely to go up by an additional of 1.8-4°C (IPCC, 2007). This temperature increase can be attributed to the altered energy balance of the climate system resulting from changes in atmospheric concentrations of the green house gases (GHGs). Among the principal components of radiative forcing of climate change, CO₂ has the highest positive forcing leading to warming of climate. CO₂ has the least global warming potential among the major green house gases but due to its much higher concentration in the atmosphere; it is the major contributor towards global warming and climate change. Agriculture sector in India contributes 28% of the total GHG emissions (NATCOM, 2004). The global average from agriculture is only 13.5% (IPCC, 2007). In future, the percentage emissions from agriculture in India are likely to be smaller due to relatively much higher growth in emissions in energy-use transport and industrial sectors. The emissions from agriculture are primarily due to methane emissions from rice fields, enteric fermentation in ruminant animals and nitrous oxides from application of manures and fertilizers to agricultural soils (NATCOM, 2004).

The Late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam is described as a great patriot, visionary leader and the 11th President of India ( 2002 – 2007 ). The country would have celebrated his 84th birth day on 15th October 2015. To many like me, he was the most ideal role model that the youth of India needed, in recent time. He emerged as a complete human-being who touched the lives of people.

My first meeting with him was when he visited IPCL in eighties - as the DRDO Chief to discuss about Carbon Fiber and Composites. I was heading GSFC’s R&D Centre and other facilities like engineering plastic Nylon – 6 and their Composites and hence was invited to join the discussions. That interaction left a strong impression in my mind. Later when I became Vice Chancellor of Gujarat Agricultural University, I had many more opportunities to meet him and was often surprised at his deep rooted interest and knowledge in every sphere of Science & Technology. Subsequently, to my delight, I received an invitation from his office on the eve of 26th January evening - at home with the President and later was given more time for a one-to-one meeting the next day. Walking across the corridors of the Rashtrapathi Bhavan, the atmosphere looked rather formal and uneasy for me, but, as I was ushered into his room, I saw Dr. Kalam wearing his favourite blue shirt and smiling. He moved forward and greeted me with the same friendliness and warmth. As we started talking about Agriculture scenario, the work I was planning and the future prospects, I marveled at his understanding and insight and left the room truly inspired. 

"Where is your Dhoti, Dr. Mehta ?” Dr. Varghese Kurien surprised me as I entered his office at IRMA (Institute of Rural Management Anand). That was April 2000, soon after I had taken over as the Vice Chancellor of the erstwhile Gujarat Agricultural University (GAU) and had decided to call on him during my visit to the Anand Campus. (At that time GAU was the largest University in the Asia with four main campuses – Dantiwada, Anand, Junagadh and Navsari and about 65 experimental farms / stations spreaded all over).

5.1 Locale of Research

Based on the All-India assessment report regarding Climate Vulnerability Assessment for Adaptation Planning in India Using a Common Framework which identifies the most vulnerable states and districts in India with respect to current climate risk and the main drivers of vulnerability, the present study has been conducted in two relatively highly vulnerable states of India namely West Bengal (Vulnerability Indices:0.592) and Jharkhand (Vulnerability Indices: 0.674). It specifically comes under Agro-climatic zone III (Lower Gangetic plain region) and Agro-climatic zone VII (Eastern plateau and hilly region) respectively.

On the basis of Vulnerability Indices (Vis) different district of West Bengal classified into three categories i.e. relatively high vulnerability (0.59-0.69), moderate vulnerability (0.49 -0.59), and relatively low vulnerability (0.38- 0.49). Two districts, Malda (VIs:0.690) and Jalpaiguri (VIs:0.627) from highly vulnerable and three district Murshidabad (VIs:0.524), Dakshin Dinajpur (VIs:0.523) and Burdwan (VIs:0.497) from moderate vulnerable category were selected purposively for the present study. For satisfying the purposes three agroclimatic zones of the West Bengal, viz. Terai Zone (Jalpaigudi), Old Alluvial Zone (Murshidabad and Dakshin Dinajpur) and New Alluvial Zone (Burdwan) districts were taken into account for the assessment. Twenty respondents of two Villages from each Block i.e., Alipurduar-I of Jalpaigudi, Hilli and Gangarampur of Dakshin Dinajpur, Old Malda of Murshidabad and Barabani of East Burdwan were purposively picked for the research study.

The deliberation on the methodology has been made to understand the concept, methods, and techniques which were utilized to design the study, collection of information, analysis of the data and interpretation of the findings for revelation of truths and formulation of theories. 5.1. Locale of Research
The present research has been carried out at Kasthodanga, Mollabalia, Madhpur, Baksha, and Mitrapur villages of Kasthodanga gram panchayat in Haringhata block; Rautari, Ghetu Gachhi, Maniktala para, Tentul Baria, Maheswarpur from gram panchayat in Chakdaha block of Nadia district; Boinchigram, Goara, Chau bera, Uttarkhanda, Champahati villages of Bantika- Boinchi gram panchayat in Pandua Block; Dhopapara, Beleswar, Ichhapura, Tiornai, Baksagari from Dhopapara gram panchayat in Balagarh block of Hooghly district from the Alluvial zone of West Bengal. From the Terai zone of West Bengal, Elejanerkuthi, Kalabarighat, Hourgari, Ghughumari, Gokuler Kuthi, Hirar kuthi from Coochbehar- 1 block; Pundibari, Kalarayerkuthi, Sukhdhanerkuthi, Khagribari, Singimari Paschimpar, Basdaha Natibari, villages of Coochbehar- 2 block; Mirer Kuthi, Kismat Dasagram, Bara Shakdal, Kochabari, Bamanhat-ii, Durganagar, villages of Dinhata 2 block

4. Research Setting
Research setting presents the set of an ecosystem, here social-ecological systems, where the variables and characters are created, evolved, characterized and interact with others. Research setting is not a stale or lentic ecosystem rather it is agile, evolving and dynamic, so in this present work, we have perceived research setting as the performing social-ecology which sustains and keeps constantly characterizing the behaviour and dynamics of the variables under study, e.g. a settlement in close proximity to natural water body is expected to have interaction with ethiophonal diversity and performing economy therewith similarly, another set of respondents with the same set of variables but living in a forest ecosystem. The interaction and exposition of the variables will follow a different expression and pathway. So, while we will go for modelling, with the same set of variables but in different ecological set up, it is expected that the nature of interaction and expression will follow the unique characters of the concerned ecosystem.
4.1. Area of Study
The area of investigation of this study is situated in the state of West Bengal located in the eastern part of India. The state of West Bengal in eastern India has unique social and ecological backgrounds which influence the living standard and behavioural patterns of the people in many ways. The present research design has accommodated two agro- ecological set ups in West Bengal, India, and these are New Alluvial and Terai zone.

4.1 Research Setting

In any social science research, it is hardly possible to conceptualize and perceive the data and interpret the data more accurately until and unless a clear understanding of the characteristics in the area and attitude or the behavior of people is at commend of the interpreter who intends to unveil an understanding of the implication and behavioral complexes of the individual who live in the area under reference and form a representative part of the larger community. The socio-demographic background of the local people in a rural setting has been critically administered in this section. A research setting is a surrounding in which input and elements of research are contextually imbibed, interactive and mutually contributive to the system performance. Research setting is immensely important in the sense because it is characterizing and influencing the interplays of different factors and components.

Besides the investigators must also have the basic knowledge about the socio demographic background of the people so as to have an easy understanding of their knowledge, attitude and behavior.

Research setting refers to the detail information of an area where the study has been conducted. The study area, generally comprises of a particular geographical area viz. a state, district, block, or gram panchayat area selected according to the convenience of the investigator who possess adequate knowledge regarding the location, communication facility etc. of the locality so that he/she can easily approach each and every corner of the area for data collection. Here. in this study the data collection was done mostly over telephone based on the interview schedule due to Covid-19 pandemic situation.

Introduction

Resource Conserving Technology refers to any management approach or technology that increases factor productivity including land, labour, capital and inputs. The resource conserving technologies (RCTs) involving no or minimum tillage, direct seeding, bed planting and crop diversification with innovations in residues management are the possible alternatives to the conventional energy and input-intensive agriculture. The RCTs with innovations in residue management avoid straw burning, improve soil organic C, enhance input efficiency and have the potential to reduce GHGs emissions (Pathak et al., 2011). Conservation agriculture is one the effective Resource Conservation Technologies, which is based on three principles which are minimum soil disturbance, maintenance of permanent soil covers by the use of crop residues and cover crops and diverse plant associations which included crop rotations. Globally, Conservation Agriculture is being practiced in about 125 M ha area. USA with 26.5 M ha contributes to the major CA-practicing countries followed by Brazil (25.5 M ha), Argentina (25.5 M ha), Canada (13.5 M ha) and Australia (17.0 M ha). However, in the context of climate change to increase the production and productivity, India’s CA adoption is still in preliminary phases in area of 1.5 million ha with adoption of Zero Tillage (Jat et al., 2012, www.fao.org/ag/ca/6c.html). The major CA-based technologies being adopted is zero-tillage (ZT) wheat in the rice-wheat system of Indo-Gangetic Plains.

First Part: Multivariate Statistical Analysis
6.1. Results
The chapter deals with the result and discussion of the study using multivariate statistical analysis and participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) techniques with the purpose to provide sufficient information so as to arrive at valid conclusion. Tables and models are commonly used in this chapter to support and supplement the textual materials. Discussion helps to interpret the results of the study in proper perspective and to relate them with other relevant studies.
Axiomatic statement on the variable interactions and behaviour selected for the study
Research setting in the present study presents a dynamic social-ecology which is evolving along and across the undulation of social process. Both the structural and functional dimensions and behaviour are in constant interaction and response with the subject respondents in terms of innumerable variables. For the present research only some selected characters have been selected for empirical titration. There is no wonder these variables can be catalogued in terms of dependent or independent variables rather should not be distributed in a binary mode. Rather these variables are with seamless transformations like the algorithm of quantum physics. That is how whenever a set of x variables are supposed to behave with a contributor characters the same can be responsive with a recipient behaviour, e.g. in stepwise regression, set of ‘x variables’ are not considered as the only source of causal variables along with the couple of ‘y variables’ which are promoting rest other y variables have also been considered as causal variables. Hence, in case of y1, the rest of the y variables have to be treated like: y2 = y2' ; y3' = y3; y4 = y4' and so on.

Introduction

The resource conservation technologies (RCTs) is primarily focussed on resource savings through minimal tillage, ensuring soil nutrients and moisture conservation through crop residues and growth of cover crops, and adoption of spatial and temporal crop sequencing. These practices have long been practised by the farmers in the Indo Gangetic Plains (IGP) but it got eroded in recent times due to various geo-socio economic- political reasons. This region (10.5 million ha) comprises of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal and have major share in production of rice and wheat due to adoption of green revolution technologies followed by area expansion. It has been reported that rice-wheat system has strained the natural resources of this region (Swarup and Singh, 1989; Kumar and Yadav, 1993; Lal et al., 2004). In present scenario there is little scope to meet future target by earlier approaches like area expansion and intensive use of natural resources. Therefore, RCTs can be regarded as energy, water and labour efficient system to sustain soil health and production environment and produce more at less cost (Jat et al., 2012; Gathala et al., 2011b).

Major emphasis is given upon the RCTs components like zero/reduced tillage, direct seeded rice, crop residue management and crop diversification. However, other RCTs like site specific nutrient management, leaf colour chart, laser land leveller, nutrient use efficient genotypes, integrated crop and pest management provide options to the farmers as per their resource endowment.

The chapter focuses on presenting the outcomes and analysis of the research, aiming to offer ample information for reaching accurate conclusions. Within this chapter, tables and models are frequently employed to reinforce the textual content. The discussion section plays a crucial role in interpreting the research results appropriately and establishing connections with other pertinent studies.

The distribution characteristics of the variable Age (x1 ) reveals that the respondents’ ages range from a minimum of 27 to a maximum of 71. The average age is 48.675, suggesting that the majority of respondents fall into the middle-age category. The standard deviation is 11.574, indicating the degree of variability in the ages. Furthermore, the coefficient of variance (CV) is 23.779 percent, indicating a high level of consistency in the distribution pattern of the variable.

The distribution pattern of the variable Family size (x3 ) shows that the family size ranges from a minimum person of 3 to a maximum of 10 persons. The average family size is 10.125 persons. The standard deviation is 1.397. The coefficient of variance (CV) is 23.882 percent which indicates a high level of consistency in the distribution pattern of the variable.

This chapter is an extensive survey of all past studies relevant to the field of investigation which gives a knowledge of what others have found out in the related f ield of study. In any scientific investigation or research a comprehensive presentation of review of literature is a statutory requirement. Its main functions are to develop a better understanding of the problem to be investigated, delineate a new area of study and avoid unnecessary duplication, decide on the tools and techniques to be adopted including developing some new ones, also to relate the present study with the previous ones by finding out the areas of agreement and disagreement.

The review of literature of the present study is based on the major concepts related to the f ield of investigation. As direct references on all the item are not in abundance, certain specific references along with some indirect references have been incorporated in this chapter for the purpose of meaningful use.

Review of literature has been organized with a view to provide hard evidences as to clinically justify the reasons, logic, and contemplation leading to heuristically infer the different echelons of resilience issues.This is also catered to isolate the apparently less attempted genre of resilience study and analysis. Climate change, uncertainty, decline of soil organic carbon, fatigued genes on land, loss of biodiversity and fragile ecology of society have only been some of myriad of factors causing the loss of resilience, from ecology and from society as well.

This chapter reviews the research work done in the fields related to the objectives of the study. In any scientific investigation or research a comprehensive review of relevant literature is very essential. Its main function apart from determining the work done before concerning the problem area i.e. area of investigation, it provides an insight into the methods and procedures and create a basis for interpretation of findings. 2.1. Ecosystem Services and Conservation Agriculture
Acharya, S. K. and Chatterjee, R. (2019) found that conservation agriculture may help in re-building agro-ecology by maintaining carbon sequestration, maintaining soil health, checking soil erosion and ground water depletion, energy balance, mitigating climate change related problems through maintaining ecosystem services.
Ayyam, V., Palanivel, S., and Chandrakasan, S. (2019) stated that CA embraces higher rates of carbon sequestration, organic matter accumulation, soil erosion reduction, and its associated improvement in soil biological properties. Additionally, there is reduction in greenhouse gas emission as a result of CA. Adoption of CA-based farming practices particularly in areas facing notable land degradation and depleting natural resources delineates a win-win scenario due to improved crop yield and trends of increasing soil fertility and scope for climate change adaptation to recuperate degraded soils and improve ecosystem services.

Introduction

The resource conservation technologies (RCTs) primarily focus on resource-savings management systems for agricultural production through minimal tillage operation, maintaining soil health for available plant nutrients and conserving soil moisture through crop residues and/or cover crops, and following cropping sequence in spatial and temporal scale. The integration of resource-conserving technologies working in synergy is commonly referred to as conservation agriculture (CA). The CA is “a concept for resource-saving agricultural crop production that strives to achieve acceptable profits together with high and sustained production levels while concurrently conserving the environment” (FAO 2007). The CA envisages four principles: (i) minimizing mechanical soil disturbance and seeding directly into untilled soil, (ii) maximizing crop residue retention and/or growing cover crops, (iii) optimizing diversification of cropping sequences and rotations, and (iv) minimizing mechanical soil compaction through controlled traffic. The CA technologies involving no- or minimum-tillage with direct seeding and bed planting, residue management and crop diversification have potential for improving productivity and soil quality, mainly by soil organic matter build-up. Conservation agriculture systems appear to be appealing options to achieve sustainable and intensive crop production under different agroecological environments because they use available resources efficiently and maintain soil fertility. However, there is a need for wider scale testing of these new technologies under diverse production systems, as the CA technologies are site specific and therefore appraisal of CA is important to have significant adoption (Ramesh et al., 2016)

1. Introduction
The world’s ecosystem is facing significant challenges because of risingpopulations, more urbanization, and industrialization (Juwarkar et al.,2014). Significant environmental contamination has been caused by moderncivilizations, industrialization, population increase, intensive agriculturalpractices, human activities, and technological advancement (Lalevic et al.,2016).

1. Introduction
Oil spills are defined as the unintentional release of liquid petroleum hydrocarbons into the environment, predominantly impacting marine ecosystems. This form of pollution, often caused by human activities, can also occur onterrestrial landscapes. Spills typically result from the discharge of crude oilfrom sources such as tankers, offshore platforms, drilling rigs, and wells, aswell as from refined petroleum products like gasoline and diesel (Smith etal., 2019). While such incidents are primarily accidental, they may arise fromvarious circumstances, including inadequate storage or poor maintenance,leading tocontainerleaks. Historically, one of the earliest documented oil spillsoccurred in 1907 in Batum, a region then part of the Russian Empire (moderndayBatumi, Georgia). This incident, involving a collision between an oil-ladenship and another vessel in the Black Sea, marked the beginning of recorded oilspill events, though historical records from that time remain limited (Johnsonet al., 2021). The consequences of oil spills are profound, affecting both theenvironment and the economy. On the ocean’s surface, oil disrupts aquaticecosystems by blocking sunlight penetration and depleting dissolved oxygenlevels, which are vital for marine life. Crude oil compromises the insulating andwaterproofing properties of fur and feathers, leading to hypothermia and deathin oil-coated birds and marine mammals. Additionally, ingesting oil can causeseveretoxicity, while damage to habitats and reproductive systems often delaysthe long-term recovery of affected species. Coastal vegetation, particularly inecosystems such as saltwater marshes and mangroves, is also highly vulnerable

Introduction

The Rispana river is a order of stream forming a tributary of Ganga. Its watershed covers an area of approximately 53.6 Km in the northern part of Dehradun city lies between 78^º30’ to 78^º15⁰’ longitude and 30^º15’ to 30^º 30’ latitude in top sheet No is 1/3. The area is covered in IRS - IC Pan of 13 Jan 1998 and LISS-III of 7 March 1997.

The Doon Valley is enriched with numerous seasonal and perennial streams. Which forms the lifetime or the inhabitants . The Rispana river is the part of the Ganga system of Drainage of the valley. The river originates from the Mussoorie hills, which are full of natural springs. The droplets from the springs collect and form numerous streamlets and these streamlets are joined to be these and they form the famous Shekhar Falls (north of Shahanshai Ashram about 5 Km away). Then the Rispana flows along Rajpur road over the Doon Gravels and then river passes through the tiny hamlets Nalapani, Raipur, Chanderroad, Defence colony, Amwala, Tapowan, Dandadhoran Adohiwala, Dalanwala, Gujram, Ajabpur and finally its contribute the water to the suswa River which intern joins the Ganga.

Saline Water Agriculture has been drawing interest as one of the solutions for limitation of world fresh water supply, farmland availability, salinity ingression and the pressing future need of food supply. The cultivation of salt-tolerant crops on saline soil and with saline waters has significant social and economic potential.

It is often argued that fresh water agriculture near rivers and ponds was invented because of the need to sustain people and communities. Saline water agriculture is going to be needed for sustaining our future generations and civilization.

It has been repeatedly proving that Science& Technology that is close and in harmony with nature is proving winner in the long run. If the past 60 years led to the Green Revolution in agriculture which often became Greed Revolution, the next 60 year should be the emergence of love for nature, diversity and Sustainable Green Revolution. The two goals – Sustainability and Productivity are inter-related.

It is also said that the main difference between the past and today is that our problems are truly global. We are also aware that globally and nationally the rich-poor divide is growing and though world produces enough food, nearly 800 million people remain food insecure. Among 8 millennium goals, eradication of poverty and hunger and environmental sustainability are perhaps the most prominent and complimentary.

3.1 What is environment ?

The word environment is derived from a French word “environne” means to encircle or surround. Environment is defined as the circumstances or conditions that surround an organism or group of organisms. It is also defined as the complex of social or cultural conditions that affect an individual or community. Since humans inhabit the natural world and they build social, cultural and technological world, all constitute important parts of our environment.

Attaining food and nutritional security for a growing population and reducing poverty while sustaining agricultural production under the current scenario of depleting natural resources, increasing cost of inputs and impending negative impacts of climatic change are the major challenges the country is currently facing (FAO, 2009). In addition to these challenges, decline in soil organic matter, consequent deterioration of soil health, large scale erosion of fertile top-soil are the other bottle-necks for increasing agricultural productivity from a finite land resource base. These constraints are evolving mainly due to: (1) intensive tillage induced soil organic matter decline, soil structural degradation, water and wind erosion, reduced water infiltration, surface sealing and crusting, soil compaction, (2) insufficient return of organic material to soil owing to prevalent crop residue removal and burning (Prasad et al., 1999) and (3) mono-cropping. Conservation agricultural (CA) is a panacea to address these challenges the farming community of this country is presently facing. The CA system incorporates a holistic approach to agriculture that results in improved soil health and water quality, lower water and nutrient consumption, reduced soil loss, strategic land use and healthy biodiversity. It involves minimum soil disturbance, permanent soil cover through crop residues or cover crops, and crop rotations for achieving higher productivity (Hobbs et al., 2008).

Conservation of biodiversity and mitigation of global warming are two major environmental challenges today. In the context of climate change and the global carbon cycle, the relationship between plant biodiversity and soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration has become a subject of considerable scientific interest. The Earth’s terrestrial vegetation plays a pivotal role in the global carbon cycle. Not only are tremendous amounts of carbon stored in the terrestrial vegetation, but large amounts are also actively exchanged between vegetation and the atmosphere. Anthropogenic perturbations exacerbate the emission of CO₂ from soil caused by decomposition of soil organic matter (SOM) or soil respiration (Schlesinger, 2000). The emissions are accentuated by agricultural activities including tropical deforestation and biomass burning, plowing, drainage of wetlands and low-input farming or shifting cultivation. In addition to its impact on decomposition of SOM, macroclimate has a large impact on a fraction of the SOC pool which is active. Conversion of natural to agricultural ecosystems increases maximum soil temperature and decreases soil moisture storage in the root zone, especially in drained agricultural soils (Lal, 1996). Thus, land use history has a strong impact on the SOC pool (Pulleman et al., 2000). The dynamic relationship between plant biodiversity and SOC depicts that any land use practices that increase vegetative cover, or reduce its removal, could have an influence on the global carbon budget by increasing the terrestrial carbon sink.

The research locale is a crucial aspect of any research study because it can have a significant impact on the data collected, the results obtained, and the conclusions drawn from the research. The selection of the research locale should be based on the research questions, objectives, and methodology of the study. The characteristics of the research locale such as its physical, social, cultural, and economic attributes, and the population being studied, can affect the research outcomes.

This section of the research critically examines the socio-demographic background of local people in a rural setting. The research setting refers to the context in which the research is conducted, and it plays a crucial role in shaping the interplay of different factors and components that influence the study’s outcomes. The research setting is essential because it provides a contextual framework that helps to inform the researcher’s interpretation of the data. By understanding the characteristics and context of the research area, the researcher can more accurately conceptualize and interpret the data, leading to a more nuanced understanding of the implications and behavioural complexities of the individual and the larger community.

Abstract
 
Within the time scale for soil formation, humans appeared to the planet within the last 1 million years. They shifted their lifestyle from hunter-gatherer to nomadic animal husbandry and finally to cultivation of domesticated crops only within the last 10,000 yrs. Earlier, these crops were cultured in a semi-nomadic style as land was plentiful, so when soil lost its productivity, people abandoned it in favor of new-land. Gradually, as land became scarcer and population exploded, agriculture evolved to continuous cropping of the same parcel of land. This discovered the major concern for soil health. As organic matter is key to soil health, humus is the last stage of organic matter decomposition. Humus is a complex aggregate of dark brown colored amorphous substances, which have originated during the decomposition of plant and animal residues by microorganisms, under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Humus and living microorganisms are connected by numerous ways which must be appreciated in order to understand the origin and nature of humus. Our attempt is to narrate the role of organic matter and vital role of microbes in humification process.

4.1 Urban Issues

(i) Water Problem

The world’s population is increasingly found in the cities. Now a days, throughout the developing world, urbanization trends are gaining speed and are irreversible. From a technical standpoint, it is easier to provide water and sanitation services to people living closer together in urban settings than in dispersed rural communities. However, the costs of meeting the needs are much higher per capita, and are growing. The health risks posed by the lack of sanitation increase exponentially as densities increase and as people share drinking water and sanitation resources.

The urban environmental sanitation crisis in developing countries is taking a large health, economic, and environmental toll on all city residents. Willingness to pay for basic water and sanitation services is often high in peri- urban neighbourhoods, provided that services are appropriate, effective, and affordable. The use of a strategic sanitation approach should helps to build capacity within implementing agencies and enhances the ability of communities to make sustainable sanitation improvements.

(ii) Energy Problem

Energy is basic to development. Modern energy services are powerful engine of economic and social opportunity: no country has managed to develop much beyond a subsistence economy without ensuring at least minimum access to energy services for a broad section of its population. It is not surprising to find, therefore, that the billion who live in developing countries attach a high priority to energy services. On average, these people spend nearly 12% of their income on energy. At the same time, the provision of energy services especially through the combustion of fossil fuels and biomass can create adverse environmental effects. In rich countries, much attention is directed to the regional and global consequences of fuel combustion, because many of the local effects have been controlled at considerable expense over the past half- century. In developing countries, the local environmental problems associated with energy use remain matters of concern that are as, or even more, urgent than they were in industrialized countries 50 or 100 years ago. Further, it is the poor who suffer most severely from such problems, because it is they who are forced to rely upon the most inefficient and polluting sources of energy services for lack of access to better alternatives.

According to the Indian economic survey of 2018, more than 50% of the Indian workforce is employed in the agricultural sector. Agriculture contributed to 17–18% to the country’s GDP. Agriculture’s share in India’s economy is less compared to the industrial and services sectors. The industrial and service sectors have higher growth rates. The significance of the agricultural sector in India’s economic and social growth goes well beyond. Nearly 60% of India’s families depend on rural incomes. In addition to this, the majority of India’s poor population (around 70 %) lives in rural areas. Also, as the population is growing at a fast rate, food security in India depends on producing cereal crops and in increasing the production of fruits, vegetables and milk to sustain the needs of a growing population. To achieve this we need a productive, diversified, competitive, and sustainable agricultural sector. India is the world’s largest producer of pulses, spices and milk. It has the world’s largest cattle herd and the largest area under wheat, rice, and cotton. India is also the second largest producer of rice, wheat, cotton, sugarcane, farmed fish, sheep & goat meat, fruit, vegetables and tea.

Soil pollution happens when we destroy the thin layer of healthy and productive soil, which covers the earth’s surface. Most of the world’s food is produced using this resource and if we don’t protect it the world’s farmers will be unable to grow enough food to support the worlds people.
 
Healthy soil depends on bacteria, fungi, and small animals (such as worms) to break down wastes in the soil and release its nutrients which help plants grow. The over use of fertilizers and pesticides can limit the ability of soil organisms to process wastes, which in turn makes the soil less productive or in the worst case scenario useless or even poisonous. 

Life on Earth is rooted in soil. Soil is not just a substratum anchoring the plants and giving a base for all terrestrial animals. It is the largest terrestrial ecosystem, and one of the most wonderful ecosystems on Earth. It inhabits most microorganisms. Microbial populations flourishing within the soil have greater biomass than all the human beings, elephants, and whales put together. It is due to the microorganisms that the soil constitutes the most active ecosystem on Earth.

The health of the soil is crucial for the health of all the plants growing on it and for all the animals dependent on it for their inhabitation and nourishment. Soil health is also critical for the well-being of numerous microorganisms, detritivores, and several other organisms. Soil is composed of all essential nutrients/ minerals, air, water, and organisms in a proportion that strikes its ecological balance and maintains its structure and functions revealed through its productive potential.

Soil, like all other ecosystems, is itself a dynamic ecosystem. Its composition keeps changing but natural inbuilt mechanisms help strike a balance and recover 

3.1. SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

Solid waste management includes the transportation, processing, recycling and disposal of our waste materials. We live in a disposable world in many ways with the modernization and convenience of our world we have cluttered it with our refuse.

Energy, food production and various other natural resources are the limiting factors on this earth. The result of this bitter truth has been published in a book titled ‘The Limits to Growth’ in 1972. If the enormously growing population and the industrial process is not checked, then the earth’s civilization may come to an end within next hundred years.

By considering the space travel, we can very well understand about the Ecosystem. When we go away from the biosphere, it will be appropriate to develop unlimited environment through the energy accumulated from the sunlight in space. For the space travel for some days to moon and back to earth, we need not establish the entire ecological system as greater quantity of O₂ and food stuffs can be stored and CO₂ and other unwanted materials can be fixed for establishing space colonies, we have to build a special space ship with important abiotic components which can be recycled for use again and again. The vital processes of production, consumption and decomposition can be established and balanced through biotic components. In other words we are creating a complete mini human ecological machine. Before we established this system, we should be quite familiar about the space problems and its implications.

The edible speciality mushrooms are mushrooms that are generally not grown and available commonly in the market. Any mushroom other than popularly grown white button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) falls under the specialty category, and these mushrooms are generally not available over the counter or in departmental stores in India or other countries in the world. The mushrooms under this group include the different types of commonly grown Oyster mushrooms like grey, black, white, pink, yellow oyster mushrooms, King Oyster mushroom, Shiitake mushroom, Black Ear mushroom, Shimeji mushroom, Enokutake mushroom, Milky mushroom, the Portabella brown, Cremini mushroom , Straw mushrooms and others. This paper will describe in detail biology and cultivation of these mushrooms as grown under controlled environment conditions or under seasonal growing conditions, where ever possible.

Abstract

Alleviating plant salt stress and remediating saline soils are of great economic interest. Beneficial microbes such as arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), etc. are associated with many plant species including trees. These beneficial microbes can cope up with salinity and help the plants to survive in such soils. Diversity status of beneficial microbes from the samples collected from different salt affected areas was investigated by many researchers. They screened and identified the efficient PGPR isolates isolated from saline areas for plant growth hormone (IAA) production and phosphate solubilization. The significance and highlights of the recent research as well as the past understanding of beneficial microbes and their role in reclamation of saline areas is discussed in this paper.

Abstract

The arid Kachchh district, located at the western most part of the Gujarat State in India, is known for its large extent of area under wetland habitat, which is represented by numerous seasonal water bodies and coastal habitats. Vast stretch of grasslands also available in the northern border of the district, the Banni (23⁰ 19’ to 23⁰ 52’ N; 68⁰ 56’ to 70⁰ 32’ E), which encompasses an area of 2,617 km². There are many depressions in Banni, locally known as Dhandh (shallow lakes). During monsoon, rainwater gets collected in these depressions and form shallow lakes. About 34 smaller and bigger size Dhandhs are present in the Banni. Banni communities are highly dependent on the Dhandhs for various purposes. Due to the erratic rainfall in arid Kachchh, Maldharis is highly unstable for livestock in search of fodder and water during drought years. During the normal rainfall years, livestock from neighboring talukas of Kachhh and even from other districts depends on this grassland and Dhandhs. During last decade, the Banni grasslands have seen serious environmental changes due to the invasion of an exotic plant Prosopis juliflora and increasing the salinity are the major issues of Dhandh degradation. Thus, the Banni is gradually losing its capacity to sustain human and livestock population.

Main objectives of the present paper is to examine the local perceptions of wetland and grassland change, socio-economic status, and factors that cause degradation of the wetland and vegetation resources in the Banni grassland.

6.1. Data Interpretation and Visualization of West Bengal

Any kind of production management system or decision-making process is being organised in social ecology. No variable cannot behave discrete or free without having any kind of influence as well as impact from the vary operating ecosystem. That is how it is imperative to know and visualize the basic features in terms of its distributive characters. The distribution of features in variables through this networking and interactions ultimately contribute to a holistic visualization of social ecologization under study.

Table 6.1.1 represents the distribution of variables in terms of range i.e. maximum and minimum values, mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variation for Terai Zone, Old Alluvial Zone and New Alluvial Zone of West Bengal.

The average age (x1) of the respondent stands at 49.02. It denotes that so far as responsibility of agriculture and age base livelihood runs at the population so far as the respondent under study is peaks are at the hands of farmers approaching or passing through old ages. Introduction

Environmental problems have come to the forefront as one of the most important issues in transport policy. For a number of pollutants the road transport sector is one of the most significant contributors to environmental pollution. Vehicular emissions have been identified as one of the major contributors in deteriorating air quality in the urban centers. The problem has further been compounded by the concentration of large number of vehicles and comparatively high motor vehicle/population ratios in these cities. Substantial SPM, RSPM CO₂ and No_x are emitted. The problem of air pollution has assumed serious proportion in some of the major metropolitan cities of India. Therefore, CPCB has 296 monitoring stations all over India covering major cities.

The air pollution situation in most of the cities is still far from satisfactory. In India the major air pollution reason is automotive smoke and smoke from industries. New channels are also publishing pollution levels in selected metropolitan cities. The most polluted city in Asia is Pune. The SPM and RSPM levels are displayed at various squares to create awareness among the masses.

Smaller cities like Nanded, Parbhani and Yavatmal are not covered under National Ambient Air Quality Monitoring (NAAQM) scheme of Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The National Ambient Air Quality Standards for suspended particulate matters (SPM) are based on gravimetric measurement. Standards for Respirable suspended particulate matters (RSPM) are also based on gravimetric measurement. The development in terms of number of vehicles and building construction has also reached at the doors of these cities and towns. Nanded city having population of 5.5 lakhs has total number of Auto rickshaws more than 5,000. In the present study, Nanded city has been selected to check particulate matters and gaseous pollutants. Since, the city is one of the important Pilgrimage and commercial centre.

7.1 Summary

Never ever in the annals of human civilization, the importance of ecological resilience has become so important and imperative as we are perceiving now. Both the need and greed of food economics have driven the resource bases of our ecosystem, to a dilapidated and fragile status. By 2050 the world’s population will touch close to 9.5 billion and we have to scale up our food production 60% more then what it is right now. In India by 2040, we have to cross 450 million tons of our targeted food production to keep rhythm with population growth. By 2035 we are going to cross the population of China. Understanding the cascade of risks for climate change, as well as the vulnerabilities to these risks, is key to frame ways to adapt. Reducing vulnerabilities is key to reducing the net impacts on food security and nutrition and also to reducing long-term effects. Increasing resilience of food security in the face of climate change calls for multiple interventions, from social protection to agricultural practices and risk management..

When population pressure is soaring up, the need to produce more food from less and less available land and water, the issues of ecological resilience are coming up more swashbuckling and humongous. The aftermath of green revolution has contributed to achievement in food security on one hand, the other hand water has been contaminated and depleted, soil has been eroded with a sharp decline of organic carbon. We are losing 15 tons of topsoil per hectare per year and inviting a disruptive agro-ecosystem, the syndrome of which are quite vivid and prominent.

7.1. Summary
The planet rise at this moment cannot endure and conjure up any further stress and distress created by un-mindful modernization of agriculture. This situation has gone further complex with the unabated rate of urbanization. The natural resources which looked plenty some 50 years back, now is coming up something scant and degraded. We have to protect this planet; hence, we have to protect our agriculture by placing ecological resilience with its perfect balance and dynamics. In doing so, we need to manage and recycle energy, water, and biodiversity in such a way that the operating agro-ecosystem can perform for another centuries. This is a herculean task, it will only be possible when farmers and other citizens are participating elegantly and equally into the process, because farmers are not producing food for their own, rather they are feeding the entire civilization. Every year 15-20 tonnes of top soils are being eroded, the highest anytime; the sea level is rising at the rate 5-10 mm again it has become highest over the last decades and the prediction for rate of changes in rainfall and temperature contributing to global warming has been accelerate like anything. In addition to this, we need to feed 950 crores of population by 2050, while lands are getting fragmented, resources are fragile, and water is getting increasingly contaminated. Thus, CA is the only option to create a perfect balance between productivity with increase of ecological resilience, even within the cropping system by introducing crop diversification with leguminous crops and this is specially so when the biodiversity is also getting eroded. Water harvesting is the need of the hour as we can make our farm more energy parsimonious, we have direct whatever crop residues are produced in the soil echelon and making this concept a revolution into a reality we have to go in a massive way with bring awareness, creating policies, and mobilizing community to make our agriculture ever- green and ever- resilient.

Abstract

This paper is the synthesis of researches of quaternary on the Chad lake basin, our field investigations, our previous palaeogeographic research underlined by the sédimentological analyses, ¹⁴C radiocarbon and thermoluninescence dating. The objective is to show that after the effects of geological fluctuation, paleoclimatic oscillations, the Chad lake basin experiences since historical times an increasingly drying up due to the combination of geographic factors such as its close position in the Sahara desert, centre of the climate dynamics and human activities. This situation frequently generates recurrent live conditions to which man has to face.

African agriculture is in crisis, and Africa’s farmland is losing its fertility at an alarming rate. Farmers grow the same crops in the same fields year. They don’t fertilize, and they don’t terrace their fields. When the soil wears out, the clear a new piece of land (wwww.npr.org). N. Kozana Diamini Luma, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission has emphasized that ‘the year 2014 – the year of Agriculture in Africa’ will be used as an opportunity to accelerate the drive for food security. The major thrust for that has to be on ensuring that the farmers make their profession on economic activity that generate wellbeing for all in a sustainable manner (1, 2).

In contrast to the traditional universities, agricultural universities have been entrusted with the Herculean task of technology dissemination at the grass root level such that the package of practices evolved by the agricultural scientists should reach out the end-users, viz. farmers , for adopting in the field, with consequent increment in the farm productivity and farmer’s income.

This unique mandate has been assigned to agricultural universities on the pattern of land grant colleges of the United States. Such vision and trust, envisaged by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and his devout lieutenants, herald creation of state agricultural universities (SAUs) in the early 1960s. The key role played by SAUs in the first green revolution and agricultural human resources development have been regarded as the milestones in the history of India post-independence, that made the country self-sufficient in food production and, in turn, to self reliance in milk, vegetables, fruits and inland fish production.

Introduction 
Sustainability refers to the ability to maintain a balanced and healthy equilibrium by addressing economic, social, and environmental demands over time. Sustainable development is a broad and evolving concept that aims to meet present needs without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to meet theirs. It seeks to balance short-term progress with long-term viability. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, are a set of 17 goals and 169 targets that all UN Member States aim to achieve by 2030. SDG 3, which emphasizes ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages, places a strong focus on health. Within SDG 3, reducing maternal mortality and decreasing neonatal and child mortality are key priorities, represented by Targets 3.1 and 3.2, respectively. The global goal for SDG 3.1 is to lower the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) to fewer than 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030. For individual countries, a supplementary target is set to reduce their national MMR to below 140 per 100,000 live births. A nation’s progress is fundamentally tied to the health and well-being of its mothers, which is a crucial factor in achieving equitable resource distribution, reducing poverty, and promoting sustainable development. Tragically, approximately 536,000 women die each year from maternal health complications, with 99% of these deaths occurring in developing nations. India, contributing about 25% of global maternal deaths, faces a critical challenge, with around 136,000 maternal deaths occurring annually. The country has set an ambitious goal to reduce its MMR to below 100 deaths per 100,000 live births. To address these issues and support sustainability, Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) indicators play an essential role in monitoring maternal and child health (MCH) outcomes. These indicators include measures such as immunization coverage, institutional delivery rates, home delivery rates, and antenatal care coverage. By tracking these metrics policymakers can assess the effectiveness of maternal health services and identify areas that require improvement. Utilizing RCH indicators to inform policies and programs contributes to better health outcomes for mothers and children and helps reduce mortality rates, which aligns with the objectives of SDG 3. Certain regions of India have made notable strides in improving MCH. For example, the northeastern state of Assam saw significant improvements in RCH indicators between 2010 and 2015. During this time, the rate of institutional deliveries increased substantially ensuring more women had access to safe childbirth services. The government has also strengthened maternal health care by implementing various MCH programs, including the RCH initiatives and other flagship schemes.

16.1 What is Sustainable Development?

Sustainable development (SD) is a pattern of resource use that aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also for generations to come (sometimes taught as ELF-Environment, Local people, Future). The term was first  coined by the Brundtland Commission and defined sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (UN, 1987; Smith and Rees, 1998)

Expansion of the scale of human activity in recent years has put so much strain on the natural environment of this planet that in some cases nature can no longer recover. The nature’s ability though recovers damage or harmful effects in one part of the world do not stop in the very area and keeps going beyond national borders and become environmental problems on a global scale, but in a limited manner.

Sustainability has recently become an important factor in the engineering world. Landscape architecture is a discipline that attempts to improve the way humans interact with the environment. That interaction can be improved in various ways such as water conservation, energy conservation, or urban planning. landscape architecture encompasses urban design, community and regional planning, interior and exterior garden design, parks and recreation, historic site and natural area preservation, energy and water conservation, landscape restoration and management, among others. The varied list is an example of the dynamic essence of landscaping and provides insight into the many areas which can be improved by implementing sustainable practices.

Sustainable development practices aim to protect the quality of life of future generations. This can only be done by understanding how the natural environment operates as well as how human interactions affect it. Sustainable Landscape Architecture focuses on enhancing the holistic knowledge of the surrounding landscapes, including the complex processes which naturally occur to maintain it. Employing this knowledge within the planning phases of development should result in the reduction of negative environmental impacts due to the same. The traditional consequences of land development can be eliminated or mitigated when developers are able to foresee the consequences of their work. Many times, replicating undeveloped conditions and/or native landscapes within the overall site design will prove very useful in achieving the goals of sustainability. All of the sustainable topics covered in this chapter involve the application of a technology that resulted from better understanding the natural environment.

Abstract

This chapter highlights the significance of irrigated desert agriculture as a prime cause of the settlement and welfare of nomads and the consequent reduction of conflicts over limited land resources. Um Jawaseer Desert Farm Project is located in Bayouda Desert, the Northern State about 200 km north of the capital Khartoum. The planning and management approaches of such irrigated projects were discussed with special emphasis on the participatory approach. In this respect the roles of the donor (NGO), traditional tribal institutions and the project beneficiaries were illustrated. The project beneficiaries were organized into the farmers, well and women committees. The environmental and socioeconomic impacts of the project were evaluated. The project maintained food security, improved nutritional status, hygiene, housing environment and assisted in the provision of primary education and basic health facilities. Cost/benefit analysis showed the high profitability of the project. Other positive impacts include conservation of the fragile environment and biodiversity and improvement of animal productivity. Consequently, the area which witnessed an out-migration, during the seventies and the eighties, due to drought and desertification is now experiencing incoming migration.

However, adaptation to the sedentary mode of life was a real challenge. The most striking benefits of the project was that of women training for the, involvement in the decision-making process and empowerment, since 20% of the land is allocated for women. In addition to that, problems like build up of salinity, sand encroachment, low organic matter content and increased susceptibility to some water-related diseases due to irrigation were tackled successfully.
