Introduction
A mineral is a naturally occurring substance that possesses distinct physical qualities and a specific chemical makeup. An ore is a mineral or group of minerals that can be used to extract a useful substance, such a metal, and use that substance to makeother useful commodities. In  the crust of the earth, minerals are created over millions of years. These nonrenewable resources are crucial to the advancement of modern civilization. India’s mineral resources are confined to a small number of places and are unevenly distributed. The Chotta Nagpur Plateau region contains almost 90% of our mineral riches. Mining is the procedure used to extract minerals from the earth.

Mining activities move through four phases:
a) Prospecting: Mineral exploration
b) Exploration: Determining the deposit is dimensions, form, location, and economic worth.
c) Development: The process of making the deposit accessible so that minerals can be taken out of it.
d) Exploitation: Mining the minerals and taking them out.

One of the most significant natural resources is water. The water cycle sustains hydrological systems, which give rise to rivers and lakes and a range of aquatic habitats, through evaporation and precipitation. Only 3% of the water on Earth is freshwater, although making up 70% of the planet’s surface. Just 1% of this is useable water found in rivers, lakes, and subsurface aquifers, while 2% of it is represented by polar ice caps. Approximately 25% of water is used for industry globally, 70% of it for agriculture, and only 5% for residential consumption. In India, 7% is used for industry, 90% is used for agriculture, and 3% is used for household use. World Water Day is on March 22nd.
There are five oceans on Earth. oceans: the Pacific, Indian, Atlantic, Arctic, and Southern. One of the main saltwater bodies in the hydrosphere is called an ocean. The average salinity of the ocean is around 35 parts per thousand (ppt), or 3.5%. A river is a naturally occurring waterway that is longer than 18 meters (60 feet), usually freshwater, that flows toward one or more rivers, lakes, seas, or oceans. A component of the hydrological cycle are rivers.
A steam is a current-filled body of water that is contained between the banks of a stream and a bed. Typically, the watercourse’s width is under eighteen meters. It reunites disparate environments. Creeks are tributaries of streams that join rivers or other streams but do not flow into the ocean.
A lake, derived from the Latin lacus, is an inland body of water that receives waterfrom a river and is deeper and larger than a pond.

Forests are valuable renewable resources for humanity on Earth. The country’s forest cover has been estimated to comprise 19.39% of its entire geographical area. Forests consist primarily of trees that offer wood that can be transformed into solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels. Forests play a crucial role in regulating the Earth’s temperature by serving as carbon dioxide filters. They provide habitats and shelters for numerous species and also contribute to the visual beauty of the environment. Forests supply the necessary resources for a range of wood related industries, including pulp and paper, composite wood, rayon and other synthetic fibers, sporting goods, furniture, boat
construction, and matches. Timber plays a crucial role in the construction of buildings.Various products, such as bamboos, resins, gums, oils, fibers, medicines, katha, lac, shellac, etc., are derived from forests.
The country’s forest cover has been calculated to be 637,293 square kilometers, accounting for 19.39% of the country’s total geographic area. This falls short of the stipulated requirement, which is 30% of the entire land area. The geographic region is comprised of 11.48% dense forest, 7.76% open forest, and 0.15% mangrove. World Forest Day is observed on March 21st, while National Forest Day is celebrated on September 11th.

The complex interplay of biotic, chemical, and physical forces that shape an organism’s structure and survival within an ecological community is known as its environment. The “backdrop” to the story of human history is the environment, which includes the “wilderness” that humans have not yet domesticated or subjugated, the “hinterland” that surrounds human settlements, and the habitats and resources that humans exploit.
Everything that exists naturally on Earth or in a particular place, both living and nonliving, is included in the natural environment. The lithosphere, crust, upper and lower mantles, inner and outer cores, and other layers make up the structure of the earth.
Every living thing, including non-living ones, interacts with every other thing constantly in its surroundings. People in particular need an environment to survive. Humanity and the environment are mutually dependent. The state of the environment is greatly impacted by human activity, and this has an effect on how our civilization is developing as a whole.

Furthermore, we will look ahead to the emerging technologies and interdisciplinary approaches that are shaping the future of atmospheric and climate science.
The atmosphere is not an isolated system; it profoundly influences, and is influenced by, human activities, energy systems, water resources, and urban environments. Therefore, the insights derived from meteorological and climate data are increasingly being tailored and integrated into highly specialized applications that directly impact public health, economic sustainability, and urban planning. This goes beyond traditional weather forecasting to provide actionable intelligence for complex, real-world problems.
In this chapter, we will delve into several key areas where atmospheric science is making critical contributions:
• Air Quality Analysis and Pollutant Measurements: We will explore how meteorological principles are applied to understand the transport, dispersion, and transformation of atmospheric pollutants. This includes the methods for measuring various pollutants and the sophisticated dispersion modeling techniques used to predict air pollution levels and their spread, crucial for public health warnings and environmental regulations.

12.1 Introduction
Having explored the dynamic realm of Numerical Weather Prediction, which focuses on forecasting the atmosphere’s state over days to weeks, we now shift our focus to a broader, longer-term perspective: Climate Data and Analysis. While weather describes the atmospheric conditions at a specific place and time, climate refers to the long-term average pattern of weather in a region, typically spanning decades or longer. Understanding and analyzing climate data is paramount for comprehending our planet’s past climate, identifying ongoing changes, and projecting future scenarios in a warming world. The study of climate is fundamentally data-driven. Unlike the instantaneous snapshots used in weather forecasting, climate analysis requires vast historical records, often extending back centuries or even millennia, to discern natural variability from human-induced changes. This data comes from a diverse array of sources, including instrumental records (thermometers, rain gauges, barometers), satellite observations, and proxy records (tree rings, ice cores, sediment layers) that provide indirect evidence of past climate conditions. The sheer volume and heterogeneous nature of this data present unique challenges and opportunities for analysis.
This chapter will delve into the essential aspects of climate data and the methodologies used to analyze it. We will begin by exploring the various types of climate data available, understanding their strengths, limitations, and how they are collected and curated. Crucially, we will examine how this data is used to characterize climate variability – the natural fluctuations within the climate system – and to detect climate trends, particularly those associated with global warming. We will introduce key climate indices that summarize large-scale atmospheric and oceanic patterns, providing simplified metrics for
understanding complex interactions.

11.1 Introduction
Having explored the sophisticated statistical methods for analyzing meteorological data and the powerful visualization techniques for interpreting it, we now turn our attention to the very engine that drives modern weather forecasting: Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP). This chapter delves into the intricate science and technology behind predicting the future state of them atmosphere using mathematical models and supercomputers. The challenge of weather forecasting is immense. The Earth’s atmosphere is a chaotic, non-linear fluid system, constantly in motion, with interactions occurring across vast scales, from global circulation patterns to microscopic cloud droplets. For centuries, weather prediction relied heavily on empirical rules, human experience, and the interpretation of synoptic charts. While these methods achieved some success, they were inherently limited in their ability to accurately forecast beyond a day or two, especially for complex or rapidly evolving phenomena.
The visionary idea of predicting weather mathematically was first conceived by Lewis Fry Richardson in the early 20th century. He envisioned solving the fundamental equations governing atmospheric behavior using numerical methods. However, the sheer volume of calculations required made his manual attempts impractical, famously taking him weeks to produce a 6-hour forecast that had already passed. It was only with the advent of the electronic computer in the mid-20th century that Richardson’s dream began to materialize, marking the birth of modern NWP (Fig. 11.1).

10.1 Introduction
Having explored the advanced analytical techniques that allow us to extract meaningful insights and build predictive models from meteorological data, we now arrive at a crucial stage in the scientific process: communication and understanding. The chapter, “Visualization of Meteorological Data,” focuses on the art and science of transforming complex numerical datasets into insightful visual representations. In a field as inherently spatial and temporal as meteorology, effective visualization is not just about making pretty pictures;it is a fundamental tool for exploration, analysis, and the clear conveyance  of information about atmospheric phenomena (Fig. 10.1).
Consider the sheer volume and multifaceted nature of meteorological data. We grapple with variables spanning three spatial dimensions (and often more when considering altitude), evolving dynamically over time, and encompassing a wide array of physical quantities – temperature, pressure, wind vectors, humidity, precipitation rates, radiation fluxes, and more. Raw numbers and statistical summaries, while essential for quantitative analysis, often fail to reveal the intricate spatial patterns, temporal evolutions, and interrelationships that characterize weather and climate. This is where visualization steps in,
acting as a bridge between the abstract world of numerical data and our intuitive human capacity for visual pattern recognition.

9.1 Introduction
Building upon our foundational understanding of statistical methods in meteorology, Chapter 9, “Advanced Analytic Techniques,” propels us into the forefront of data science applications within the atmospheric sciences. The imperative for these advanced methodologies stems directly from the evolving nature of meteorological data itself. Modern observations, numerical weather prediction (NWP) model outputs, and climate simulations generate an unprecedented volume of information, often arriving with incredible velocity and exhibiting immense variety in format and structure. Traditional statistical approaches, while robust for many tasks, often struggle to efficiently process such vast, high-dimensional datasets, or to fully capture the intricate, often non-linear, relationships inherent in atmospheric processes.
This chapter is dedicated to exploring why and how these sophisticated techniques are not merely supplementary, but increasingly essential. We will delve into how machine learning and deep learning algorithms excel at identifying subtle, complex patterns within massive datasets, enabling breakthroughs in areas like severe weather detection, nowcasting, and the bias correction of model outputs. We will also examine advanced spatial statistics, which provide powerful frameworks for explicitly modeling the intricate geographical dependencies of meteorological variables, crucial for accurate interpolation, downscaling, and understanding regional climate impacts. Meteorological phenomena are complex, influenced by numerous interacting factors, and often exhibit chaotic behavior. Statistical methods provide the rigorous framework necessary to quantify these complexities, identify underlying patterns, assess relationships between different atmospheric variables, and ultimately, draw robust conclusions. From summarizing observed climate patterns to evaluating forecast accuracy, and from detecting long-term trends to predicting future weather events, statistics permeate nearly every aspect of modern meteorology.

The preceding chapters have detailed the myriad ways in which meteorological data is collected, from direct in situ observations to various ground-based and space-borne remote sensing platforms. We have also explored the crucial aspects of data formatting, storage, and retrieval, recognizing the immense volume and diversity of atmospheric information. However, the journey from raw measurement to actionable insight is not complete without a critical intermediate step: data quality control (QC) and preprocessing. No observational system, regardless of its sophistication, is entirely free from errors, biases, or inconsistencies. Sensors can drift, communication links can suffer interference, environmental factors can contaminate readings, and automated systems can malfunction. Consequently, raw meteorological data often contains spurious values, missing records, or systematic biases that, if left unaddressed, can severely compromise the accuracy of weather forecasts, the reliability of climate analyses, and the validity of scientific research.
This chapter will delve into the essential processes of quality control, which involves rigorously identifying, flagging, and, where appropriate, correcting or removing erroneous data points. We will explore various automated and manual techniques employed to ensure the integrity and reliability of meteorological observations. Furthermore, we will examine preprocessing steps, which prepare the quality-controlled data for its intended use, including tasks such as unit conversions, interpolation to common grids, and handling of missing values. 6.1 Introduction
Our journey through remote sensing has, thus far, focused on the remarkable capabilities of various platforms and sensors to observe Earth’s atmosphere and surface. From the localized, high-resolution insights provided by groundbased instruments like Wind Profilers and SODARs, to the expansive, global coverage offered by an array of satellite-borne imagers, sounders, radars, and lidars, we’ve seen how a continuous stream of invaluable meteorological data is acquired.
However, the mere act of collecting this data, no matter how sophisticated the technology or comprehensive the observations, represents only the initial phase of its lifecycle. The true power and utility of remote sensing data are unlocked only when it can be efficiently organized, securely preserved, and readily available to the diverse community of meteorologists, climate scientists, researchers, and operational forecasters who rely on it daily. This necessitates a profound understanding of the principles and practices governing data formats, data storage, and data access.
The sheer volume, velocity, and variety of remote sensing data pose significant challenges. Petabytes of information are generated annually, requiring robust infrastructure and standardized methodologies to ensure its integrity, interoperability, and long-term usability. Without effective strategies for managing this deluge of information, the potential of remote sensing to enhance weather prediction, advance climate science, and inform critical decision-making would remain largely untapped. 

5.1 Introduction
The Earth’s atmosphere is a vast, dynamic, and interconnected system, constantly in motion and influencing every aspect of our lives. Accurately observing and understanding this complex system is fundamental to predicting weather, monitoring climate change, and responding to environmental challenges. While ground-based platforms provide invaluable high-resolutiondata at specific locations, theitr  spatial coverage is inherently limited. This is where satellite remote sensing emerges as a revolutionary tool in meteorology. By observing the Earth and its atmosphere from space, satellites offer an unparalleled vantage point, providing global and continuous coverage that is impossible to achieve with ground-based instruments alone. They can capture data from remote oceans, deserts, and polar regions, offering a truly holistic view of atmospheric processes.
Satellite remote sensing enables meteorologists to measure a wide array of atmospheric parameters, including temperature and humidity profiles, cloud properties (type, height, movement), wind fields, precipitation rates, and the distribution of atmospheric gases and aerosols. This wealth of data is crucial for initializing and validating numerical weather prediction models, tracking severe storms, monitoring long-term climate trends, and conducting fundamental atmospheric research. This chapter will delve into the fascinating world of satellite remote sensing in meteorology, exploring the principles behind how these orbiting observatories collect data, the various types of meteorological satellites and their specialized instruments, and the diverse applications of the information they provide for understanding and forecasting
our planet’s weather and climate.

4.1 Introduction
Having explored the direct, “hands-on” approach of in situ observations in the previous chapter, we now turn our attention to remote sensing. In contrast to in situ methods, remote sensing allows us to gather information about the atmosphere without physically touching it. Instead, it relies on the detection of electromagnetic radiation (or acoustic waves) that has been emitted, reflected, or scattered by the atmosphere or its constituents.
This chapter will focus specifically on ground-based remote sensing platforms. Positioned on or near the Earth’s surface, these instruments offer unique advantages for continuous monitoring of the atmosphere above a fixed location, providing valuable insights into vertical profiles, temporal evolution, and localized phenomena. From radars that peer into storms to lidars that probe aerosols and winds, and radiometers that measure emitted radiation, ground-based remote sensing provides a vital link between highly localized in situ measurements and the broader spatial coverage offered by satellite and
airborne systems.
We will delve into the fundamental principles behind several key groundbased remote sensing instruments used in meteorology. This will include an examination of how they interact with the atmosphere, the types of atmospheric parameters they can measure (such as precipitation, wind, temperature, humidity, aerosols, and trace gases), and the strengths and limitations of each technique. By understanding the capabilities of these ground-based “eyes” on the sky, we can better appreciate their contribution to weather forecasting, atmospheric research, and environmental monitoring.

3.1 Introduction
Understanding the Earth’s atmosphere—its intricate dynamics, ever-changing weather patterns, and long-term climate trends—hinges critically on the quality and detail of the observations we collect. While remote sensing technologies offer broad perspectives from a distance, a fundamental and indispensable category of atmospheric data comes from in situ observations. The term “in situ,” meaning “in place” or “on-site,” precisely describes the nature of these measurements: they are direct, physical readings taken within the atmospheric volume itself.
These direct observations are the bedrock of meteorological science. They provide the ground truth for atmospheric conditions, offering unparalleled precision in measuring parameters such as temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction, and the characteristics of precipitation. Unlike indirect sensing, in situ methods involve instruments physically interacting with the air, yielding highly accurate and localized data points. This granular detail is crucial for a multitude of applications: it allows for the precise calibration of remote sensing instruments, provides essential validation for complex numerical weather prediction models, and enables scientists to dissect and understand fine-scale atmospheric processes that influence local weather.

2.1 Introduction
Building upon the foundational understanding of meteorology and data science established in Chapter 1, we now turn our focus to the fundamental physical processes that govern our atmosphere and the essential principles behind how we measure them. The Earth’s atmosphere is a dynamic fluid system, and its behavior is dictated by a complex interplay of physical laws. To truly comprehend weather phenomena, from the smallest updraft to the largest global circulation patterns, one must grasp the underlying atmospheric physics. This includes understanding how energy is transferred, how gases and
water vapor behave, and how forces shape atmospheric motion.
This chapter will delve into these core physical concepts, providing the theoretical bedrock necessary for a deeper appreciation of meteorological processes. Furthermore, accurate and reliable data is the lifeblood of modern meteorology and, by extension, data science applications within the field. Therefore, we will also explore the fundamental principles that underpin the measurement of key atmospheric variables.

1.1 Introduction
Meteorology, at its heart, is the scientific endeavor dedicated to understanding the Earth’s atmosphere and the myriad phenomena that occur within it. More than just the art of predicting whether it will rain tomorrow, meteorology is a robust interdisciplinary science. It intricately weaves together principles from physics, chemistry, and mathematics to unravel the complexities of atmospheric processes. From the gentle caress of a breeze to the formidable power of a hurricane, meteorology seeks to explain the underlying mechanisms that drive our ever-changing weather and long-term climate patterns.
The study of meteorology encompasses a wide array of atmospheric characteristics. Meteorologists delve into the composition of the atmosphere, examining the various gases and tiny particles known as aerosols that reside within it. They also investigate its vertical structure, distinguishing between layers like the troposphere, where most weather occurs, and the stratosphere, home to the ozone layer. The motion of the atmosphere, manifested as wind systems ranging from local gusts to global circulations, is a central focus. Furthermore, meteorology explores the thermodynamics of the atmosphere, including how heat is transferred and how temperature changes, as well as the role of water in the atmosphere, from humidity to the formation of clouds and precipitation – the realm of atmospheric hydrology. Even the captivating
optical phenomena we sometimes witness, such as rainbows and halos, fall under the purview of meteorological inquiry.

In the preceding chapters, we embarked on a comprehensive journey through the realm of vegetables, covering a wide range of species that belong to different botanical and culinary groups. These chapters provided an indepth exploration of the characteristics, growth habits, and environmental requirements of various vegetables, as well as the effects of weather conditions on their productivity.
However, the diversity of vegetables is vast, and there are several other important species that were not covered in the earlier chapters. These vegetables may be regionally specific, possess unique characteristics, or have distinct environmental requirements. Despite their importance, they have remained outside the scope of our previous discussions.
This chapter aims to fill this knowledge gap by providing an overview of these additional vegetables, with a focus on understanding the impact of weather conditions on their growth, development, and productivity. By examining the effects of temperature, moisture, light, and other environmental factors on these vegetables, we can gain valuable insights into their cultivation requirements and optimize their production.
Through this chapter, we hope to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the vegetable kingdom, highlighting the diversity of species, their environmental requirements, and the strategies for maximizing their yields. By expanding our knowledge of these lesser-covered vegetables, we can promote their cultivation, conservation, and sustainable use, ultimately contributing to global food security and nutrition.

Mushrooms are a nutritious and versatile food commodity that has gained significant importance in India in recent years. With a growing demand for healthy and organic food options, mushroom production has emerged as a lucrative venture for Indian farmers (Fig. 9.1).
• India is home to a diverse range of wild and cultivated mushroom species, with over 200 varieties found across the country. The majority of mushroom production in India is concentrated in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh.
• Mushroom production in India has witnessed significant growth over the past few decades, driven by advances in technology, improved farming practices, and increasing demand. According to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, the country produces over 1.5 million metric tons of mushrooms annually, with a value of over `3,000 crores.
 • Mushrooms are an important crop in India due to their high nutritional value, medicinal properties, and economic significance. They are an excellent source of protein, fiber, and various essential vitamins and minerals. Mushrooms are also rich in antioxidants and have been found to have potential health benefits, including reducing inflammation, improving cardiovascular health, and boosting the immune system.

The Government of India, during 1980s, recognized the necessity to improve the latex yield productivity in the traditional rubber growing regions and also expand these plantations to non-traditional regions to meet the ever increasing demands of natural rubber in India (Sethuraj et al., 1989). Agrometeorological studies were initiated during early 1986 with the appointment of a Scientist (Agrometeorology). To begin with, scientific issues were identified as: (a) delineate the potential non-traditional regions for expansion of rubberplantations, (b) estimate the impact of climatic conditions, especially abiotic  stress conditions on productivity, (c) quantify influence of meteorological factors on the physiological responses towards plant growth and yield attributes, (d) estimate the irrigation requirements to mitigate the drought conditions, and (e) develop weather based predictive models for `Abnormal leaf fall’ disease of rubber plantations. An attempt is made to present synthesis of accomplishments during 1986 to 1992 period of my association with the Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII), Kottayam.

The global economy has adversely been affected to a considerable extent due to weather related disasters like droughts, floods, heat waves and cold waves which are not uncommon in the recent past due to global warming and climate change. For the first time, the year 1998 was declared as the weather related disastrous year globally. The year 2015 was the warmest year globally, again. Such weather phenomenon of warming more and more year after year was noticed in the current decade as well when we look at 2023 and 2024. The year 2010 was the warmest year ever recorded, followed by 2009 in India. The occurrence of floods and droughts, cold and heat waves adversely affected the Indian foodgrains production to a large extent across the Country in one or other region as seen in 2014, 2012, 2009, 2004, 2002 and 1987. The cold wave in winter 2003- 04 across the Northeast region of the Country and the heat wave in summer 2004 across the same region are still in memory to understand the ill effects in agriculture/horticulture/poultry/inland fisheries sectors. Model simulations
indicate that a marked increase in rainfall and temperature over India would be seen during the current century. The maximum expected increase in rainfall is likely to be 10–30% over the Central India. Temperatures are likely to increase between 2 and 30Cby the end of 2100 A.D. However, steps taken towards the green energy across the world may yield results not to allow atmospheric global temperature beyond 1.5 to 20C. Greater number of high surges and increased occurrence of cyclones in post monsoon period along with increased maximum wind speed are also expected along the East Coast of the Country. The summer droughts and heavy rains leading to waterlogging, floods and landslides during the monsoon period is a threat to plantation crops which are predominantly grown in the Humid Tropics like Kerala (8°15` N and 12°50`N latitudes and between 74°50`E and 77°30`E longitudes).

Brassica is a genus of plants belonging to the mustard family (Brassicaceae) and includes some of the most widely cultivated and consumed vegetables globally. The Brassica group encompasses a diverse range of cool-season crops, including broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, and mustard, among others (Fig. 8.1). These vegetables are not only rich in nutrients, fiber, and antioxidants but also play a vital role in human health, food security, and sustainable agriculture.
• India is one of the largest producers of Brassica vegetables, with a  significant portion of the crop being cultivated in the Indo-Gangetic plains. According to the Indian Horticultural Database, Brassica vegetables are grown on approximately 2.5 million hectares of land, with a total production of over 30 million metric tons annually. The major Brassica-producing states in India include Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
• The importance of Brassica vegetables extends beyond their nutritional value and economic significance. They are also an integral part of Indian cuisine and culture, with various regional and traditional recipes featuring these vegetables as main ingredients. Furthermore, Brassica crops are a vital component of crop rotation and intercropping systems, helping to maintain soil health, reduce pests and diseases, and promote biodiversity.

Coffee is grown at higher elevation across the Western Ghats between 750 and 1200 m amsl. It requires a certain degree of shade for its better performance.  The annual rainfall over the coffee growing tracts varies between 1400 and 2600mm, having uni/bi-model rainfall with prolonged dryspell from November to May. It is more so over North of the Western Ghats. The mean annual maximum temperature varies between 24 and 300C while the minimum between 15 and 180C. The difference between maximum and minimum temperatures (temperature range) varies between 5 and 160C across the coffee tract. The ‘Monsooned Malabar Coffee’ is a specialty coffee produced from the erstwhile ‘Malabar Region’. It undergoes certain changes in physical and biochemical characters when the coffee beans are processed during the summer monsoon (June to September). It is processed at Mangalore, located in Coastal Karnataka. The processing location experiences heavy rainfall of more than 1000 mm in July, followed by 950 mm in June and 600 mm in August. Out of 3264 mm of annual rainfall, 2852 mm is received during the monsoon period. It accounts more than 80 per cent of annual rainfall. The maximum temperature during the coffee monsooning period varies between 28 and 30°C while night temperature revolves between 22 and 24°C. Being located in the tropics along the West Coast, the crop processing environment in terms of surface air temperature is relatively uniform and moderate with a characteristic feature of heavy clouds and continuous rainfall during the monsoon period. These monsoon features are more predominant from the middle of June to August during which the coffee beans are subjected to monsooning. The coffee beans
bulge in the process of monsooning and the volume increases significantly due to absorption of atmospheric moisture. It is directly related to the monsoonal wind during which coffee beans are processed. The bulging was less in all the samples processed during monsoon 2003, which varied from 2.1 to 2.7 ml/100 number, while it ranged between 2.7 and 5.8 ml/100 number in the samples processed during monsoon 2004.

Allium vegetables, which include onions, garlic, and shallots, are a fundamental part of Indian cuisine and play a vital role in the country’s agricultural sector (Fig. 7.1). Here’s an overview of their importance, area, and production in India:
• India is the second-largest producer of onions in the world, accounting for over 20% of global production. Onions are grown across various states, with Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka being the top producers. The country produces over 19 million tons of onions annually, with a significant portion being consumed domestically.
• Garlic is another essential Allium crop in India, with the country producing around 1.4 million tons annually. The major garlic-producing states in India are Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
• Shallots are also grown in India, particularly in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu. The country produces around 0.7 million tons of shallots annually.
• The importance of Allium vegetables in India extends beyond their culinary uses. They are a significant source of income for millions of farmers across the country. The Allium crop industry also provides employment opportunities in rural areas, contributing to the country’s economic growth.

The natural habitat of rubber (Heavea brasiliensis) is rain forests of the Amazon basin, situated within 5° North and South at altitudes below 200m. The climate of this region is equatorial monsoon type characterized by mean
monthly temperature by 25 to 28°C, well distributed rainfall and no marked dry weather. Though it is originated in the Amazon basin, it is now predominantly grown in the tropics where an equatorial monsoon type climate prevails. Regions between 8°N and 10°S which includes Indonesian archipelago, Malaysia, southern part of Sri Lank  and some other Islands, are better suited to rubber cultivation. The production of natural rubber in the country was 8.65 lakh MT in 2008–09, registering a 4.74 per cent growth compared to the previous year. India is the fourth largest producer of natural rubber with a share of eight per cent in the World after Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia and the fourth largest consumer of natural rubber after China, USA and Japan. Among the rubber growing countries in the World, India occupies a pride place with the top most position in productivity (Table 9.1). The productivity of natural rubber (NR) in India in 2009–10 was 1784 kg/ha. In 1950–51, it was 284 kg/ha. The growth achieved in terms of the productivity of natural rubber is 628 per cent. This achievement

Leafy greens, comprising a diverse array of crops such as spinach, lettuce, kale, collard greens, and mustard greens, among others, are a vital component of global vegetable production. With their high nutritional value, versatility in culinary uses, and ease of cultivation, leafy greens (Fig. 6.1) have become an integral part of diets worldwide.
• In India, leafy greens are grown across various agroclimatic zones, with major producing states including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. The estimated area under leafy greens cultivation in India ranges from 0.7 to 0.8 million hectares, accounting for a significant share of the country’s total vegetable production. The annual production of leafy greens in India stands at approximately 5-6 million tonnes, with a considerable portion being consumed domestically.
• Beyond their culinary and nutritional significance, leafy greens also hold substantial economic importance, particularly for small and marginal farmers who constitute the backbone of India’s agricultural sector. The cultivation of leafy greens provides these farmers with a vital source of income, enabling them to support their livelihoods and contribute to local economic development.
 

Tea (Camellia sinensis) is one of the most important beverage crops in the World and the second most commonly drank liquid on earth after water. It has numerous medicinal benefits mainly due to its antibacterial and
antioxidant properties. The major tea growing regions of the world are South-East Asia (India and Sri Lanka), Eastern and South Africa consisting of Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Mozambique. All these countries are producers of black tea. China and Japan are the major producers of green tea. These countries experience cool, tropical humid climate where this crop is being cultivated. However, at present, the crop is also being cultivated in wide range of climates from Mediterranean to warm, humid tropics to include countries such as Russia and Georgia in the northern latitudes and Argentina and Australia in the southern latitudes (Plate 8. 1). The region to which the crop is grown is closely linked with the climate. The crop is grown across wide altitudes up to 2200 m a.m.s.l. Sri Lanka, Kenya, China and Vietnam are the major competitors to India in tea exporting field. China is the major producer of green tea while Sri Lanka and Indonesia are producing mainly orthodox varieties of tea. Tea industry in India occupies an important place in the national economy since last 172 years. It is an essential item of domestic consumption. Tea is also considered as the cheapest beverage amongst the beverages available in India.

Root-type vegetables are a diverse group of underground plant structures that are edible and serve as a vital source of nutrition for humans. These vegetables can be further categorized into two main types: true roots, such as carrots, beets, turnips, and radishes, which are modified taproots that store food; and tuberous roots, such as Potatoes, sweet potatoes and yams, which are modified
stems that store food. A root is a compact, often enlarged storage organ with hairy stems that develops from root tissue. So a tuber is a root crop, but a plant can be a root and not a tuber. Carrots and cassava are root vegetable crops. Potatoes, sweet potatoes and yams, on the other hand, are edible tuber crops (Fig. 5.1).
The primary difference in propagation lies in the plant part used: tubers, like potatoes, are propagated from modified stems or roots with “eyes” (nodes) that sprout, while root crops, like carrots, are propagated from seeds or root cuttings, as their roots don’t have these propagation points. Another major difference is that tubers will have long shelf life compared to roots.
• Tubers
• Origin: Tubers are modified stems or roots that store nutrients.
• Propagation: They can be propagated vegetatively by using pieces of the tuber that contain “eyes” (nodes) which sprout and grow into new plants.
• Examples: Potatoes, sweet potatoes, and cassava.

Beans play a vital role in India’s agricultural sector and food security. They are an essential source of protein, fiber, and other essential nutrients, making them a crucial component of the Indian diet. Beans are also a significant source of income for many farmers in India, particularly small and marginal farmers. The country’s bean production also contributes significantly to the national
economy, with India being one of the largest producers of beans in the world. In addition to their nutritional and economic importance, beans also play a crucial role in maintaining soil fertility and promoting sustainable agriculture practices in India. Beans are legumes, which mean they have the ability to fix nitrogen in the soil, reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers and promoting
soil health. India is a significant producer of various types of beans, which are widely used as vegetables in the country. These beans are not only a good source of protein, fiber, and other essential nutrients but also play a crucial role in the country’s agricultural sector.
Overall, beans are a vital crop in India, and their production and consumption play a significant role in the country’s food security, agricultural sector, and national economy.
They are grown in various parts of the country, with major production areas including Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. According to the Indian Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the country produced over 1.4 million metric tons of kidney beans in 2020-21. Kidney beans are an essential ingredient in many popular Indian dishes, such as rajma masala, and are also used in salads, soups, and stews.

Agroclimatology plays a vital role in the cultivation and production of creeper vegetables in India. Creeper vegetables, such as cucumber, bitter gourd, and bottle gourd, are an essential part of Indian cuisine and are grown extensively throughout the country. With its diverse climate and geographical conditions, India offers a suitable environment for the growth of a wide range of creeper
vegetables.
In terms of area and production, creeper vegetables account for a significant share of the total vegetable production in India. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India, the area under creeper vegetable cultivation has been increasing steadily over the years, with a corresponding rise in production. This trend is attributed to the growing
demand for these vegetables, both domestically and internationally.
Creeper vegetables are not only an important source of nutrition but also contribute significantly to the country’s economy. They are a vital source of income for many small and marginal farmers, who cultivate these crops on a large scale. Moreover, the export of creeper vegetables earns significant foreign exchange for the country.
The importance of creeper vegetables in India can be gauged from the fact that they are an integral part of various traditional and cultural festivals. For instance, bitter gourd is considered a auspicious vegetable in many Indian communities and is often prepared during special occasions.

India’s diverse climate and geography provide a favorable environment for growing a wide range of fruit-type vegetables, including eggplant, tomato, okra, and chillies. These crops are not only essential for food security but also contribute significantly to the country’s agricultural economy. To optimize the production and productivity of these crops, it is crucial to understand their agroclimatic requirements.
Fruit-type vegetables have specific temperature requirements for growth and development. For instance, eggplant and okra require warm temperatures between 20-30°C (68-86°F) for optimal growth, while tomatoes prefer a slightly cooler temperature range of 15-25°C (59-77°F). Chilli peppers, on the other hand, thrive in temperatures between 20-35°C (68-95°F). Adequate moisture is also essential for the growth and development of fruit-type vegetables. Eggplant, okra, and chilli peppers require consistent moisture, especially during the fruiting stage, while tomatoes require a slightly drier soil condition. The ideal annual rainfall for these crops ranges from 600-1,200 mm, with supplemental irrigation provided during periods of drought.
Weather conditions, such as sunlight, wind, and frost, also play a crucial role in the growth and development of fruit-type vegetables. Most fruit-type vegetables require full sun to produce well, while excessive wind can damage plants and reduce yields. Frost, on the other hand, can be detrimental to these crops, and frost-free periods are essential for optimal growth. India‘s diverse
climate and geography result in regional variations in agroclimatic conditions. For instance, the Indo-Gangetic Plains, which cover parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal, have a subtropical climate with hot summers and cold winters. In contrast, the Deccan Plateau, which covers parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Telangana, has a tropical climate with warm summers and mild winters. Understanding these regional variations is essential for optimizing the production and productivity of fruit-type vegetables. The agroclimatic conditions suitable for growing different fruit type vegetables are given in this chapter.

Black pepper (Piper nigrum L.), famous as “Black Gold” and also known the “King of Spices” is the most important agricultural commodities of commerce and trade in India. It is the most important, most popular and most widely used spice in the World. Of the total spices traded internationally, black pepper accounts for 34 per cent. South West India is the traditional home of this important spice, particularly the Malabar Coast. Black pepper is also grown in tropical zones such as the Asia Pacific Region, mainly India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, China, Vietnam and Cambodia. Outside the Asia Pacific region, the crop is distributed in Brazil, Mexico, Guatemala, etc., totaling about 26 countries. It is grown successfully between 20°N and 20°S latitude and from mean sea level to 1500 meters above sea level. World’s black pepper production varies in the range of 2.7 to 3.35 tonnes annually. The major production share is contributed by Vietnam with an annual production of 80,000 tonnes. About 85 per cent of the World trade of pepper is determined by the largest pepper producing countries in the International Pepper Community (IPC). World export fluctuates around 1.5–2.5 lakhs tonnes per annum. Global black pepper supply has shown a drastic increase over last ten years except in 2008–09. Vietnam’s sudden increase in production has resulted in the massive global out put of 3–3.5 lakhs metric tonnes from 1.9–2.0 lakhs metric tonnes in late nineties. 

Vegetable crops stand as pillars of global food security and human health, providing essential vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber crucial for well-being. Their diverse forms, flavors, and nutritional profiles contribute significantly to balanced diets worldwide. However, the successful cultivation of these vital crops is intricately linked to the surrounding atmospheric environment. This
book, “Agroclimatology of Vegetable Crops: Classification and Cultivation” endeavors to explore and elucidate this critical relationship, providing a comprehensive understanding of how climate and weather influence the growth, development, yield, and quality of a wide array of vegetable crops. The interaction between vegetables and their climate is a dynamic and multifaceted one. From the moment a seed germinates to the final harvest, every stage of a vegetable plant’s lifecycle is profoundly impacted by factors such as temperature, precipitation, solar radiation, humidity, and wind. Understanding these influences is no longer merely academic; in an era marked by increasing climate variability and the urgent need for sustainable agricultural practices, it has become a fundamental necessity for ensuring consistent and reliable vegetable production (Fig. 1.1).
Within these pages, readers will find detailed analyses of
• Fundamental Climatic Parameters and Their Impact: A thorough examination of how temperature regimes, rainfall patterns, solar radiation intensity and duration, humidity levels, and wind patterns affect key physiological processes in vegetable plants, such as photosynthesis, respiration, transpiration, and nutrient uptake.

Arabica coffee is reported to have originated in the tropical rain forests in Ethiopian highlands while Robusta is a native of the humid tropical lowlands of Central Africa, probably, Uganda. The major coffee producing countries
across the World are distributed between 23°N and 23°S of the equator. Beyond these latitudinal limits, temperature becomes a major limiting factor as coffee plants are sensitive to extreme temperature regimes. Thus within
the latitudes, altitude becomes a major factor. In areas, nearer to the equator, coffee plants require higher altitudes when compared to farther north and south (6.1 plate). The world’s largest coffee producer is Brazil with around 30% of total world output of coffee. Columbia comes in second with around two thirds of Brazil’s production. India is the sixth largest (after Brazil, Columbia, Vietnam, Indonesia and Ethiopia) producer of coffee. Coffee is reportedly introduced into the Western Ghats regions of South India around 1600 AD. However, commercial cultivation of coffee was opened in South India with the British enterprise and investment during late 1820s. Coffee occupies an important position among the plantation crops in India. It is cultivated mainly in the traditional States of Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and to some extent in non-traditional areas viz., Andhra Pradesh and Orissa as well as in North Eastern States viz., Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. Coffee in India is unique. Almost all coffee plantation are grown under the shade of forest/planted trees, where as it is grown under open conditions in all the major producing countries viz., Brazil, Vietnam and Columbia.

Small cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum Maton), popularly known as the “Queen of spices”, occupies an important position among the foreign exchange earning commodities. It is cultivated on a commercial scale in Sri
Lanka, Guatemala, Tanzania and Papua New Guinea. Guatemala is the largest producer of cardamom in the World. In India, it is confined to the States of Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Among these States, Kerala
accounts for the major portion of production (58.4 %), followed by Karnataka (35.2 %) and Tamil Nadu (6.4 %). In Kerala, Cardamom is mainly grown in the erstwhile Travancore area in Idukki district and it is known as the Cardamom Hill Reserve (CHR). Cardamom is a native of the moist evergreen rain forests of the Western Ghats and is grown extensively in the hilly regions at elevations of 700 to 1300 metres as an under crop in forest lands. Cardamom thrives well within certain maximum and minimum thermal regimes. It is believed that diurnal symmetries in temperature trends, if any, have close links with the changes in cloudiness, humidity, atmospheric circulation pattern, winds and soil moisture. The land use pattern of cardamom tracts has changed to a great extent in recent decades. Crops like coffee, black pepper and areca nut are being cultivated at many locations in place of cardamom. With denudation of forests in many cardamom areas, the ideal cool humid microclimate has been destabilized and adversely affected the productivity of the crop.

Cocoa is popularly known as cacao in many cocoa growing nations. Cocoa beans are the source of commercial cocoa. The cocoa products viz., cocoa liquor, cocoa butter, cocoa cake, cocoa powder and cocoa chocolate are widely consumed across the World. Cocoa powder is essentially used as flavour in biscuits, ice cream, dairy drinks and cakes. Apart its use as flavour it is also used in the manufacture of coatings for confectioners or frozen desserts. Cocoa powder is also consumed by the beverage industry for example for the preparation of chocolate milk. Besides the traditional uses in chocolate manufacture and confectionery, cocoa butter is also used in the manufacture of tobacco products, soap and cosmetics. It is also a folk remedy for burns, cough, dry lips, fever, malaria, rheumatism, snakebite and wounds. It is reported to be antiseptic and diuretic. Looking at the industry needs for various purposes, there is a heavy demand for cocoa. At present, the gap between supply and demand in cocoa appears to be more at the national level. To fill the gap, various agro-technologies and crop improvement strategies are to be chalked out, for which the response of the crop to various environmental factors are to be understood. Weather aberrations during the flowering and fruiting result in the final cocoa production. Therefore, it is important to understand the effect of weather on flowering and fruiting pattern of cocoa to minimize the crop losses against the weather abnormalities. Though it is known that cocoa yield is highly variable and sensitive to various weather factors, the studies on crop weather relationships in cocoa and its response to climate change/variability are relatively scant

The Coconut palm, also known as the Cocos Nucifera L., is one of the most fascinating and beautiful palms in the world. The coconut is believed to have originated in southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines) or Micronesia. Coconut has been cultivated in India since ages and plays an important role in social, economic and cultural activities of the people. The palm is amenable to both plantation and homestead management and it can be either a major crop or a minor one in a homestead garden of mixed crops. While responding favourably to scientific management, the palm also tolerates negligent farming to a certain extent. Thus, it can adapt to the divergent farming situations and management practices that are prevalent in different agro-climatic regions. The coconut palm is usually found near the sea on sandy beaches where it can tolerate salt spray and brackish soils. It is also grown under different soil types such as loamy, laterite, coastal sandy, alluvial, clayey and reclaimed soils of the marshy low lands. The ideal soil conditions for better growth and performance of the
palm are proper drainage, good water holding capacity, and presence of water table within three metres and absence of rock or any hard substratum within two meters of the surface. The coconut palm can also grow well inland, within altitudinal limit of 600 m to 1000 m in the Tropics. It requires an equatorial climate with high humidity. A year-round warm and humid climate favours thegrowth of coconut. The palm does not withstand prolonged spells of extreme weather/climate variations under rain fed conditions. A welldistributed rainfall of 1300–2300 mm per annum is preferred. It is known as a coastal tree since it is grown along the Coasts and Islands and does not tolerate high diurnal temperature range, that is the difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures.

Cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) is a native of Brazil and was introduced in India by the Portuguese during the16th Century. It is grown in India, Brazil, Vietnam, Tanzania, Mozambique,
Indonesia, Sri Lanka and other tropical Asian and African countries. The crop is grown within the latitudinal belt of 27°N and 28°S of the equator experiencing the tropical climates for its growth and development. It is categorised under one of the plantations along the West and East Coasts. To a limited extent cashew is cultivated in Gujarat, Chattisgarh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The crop is mostly grown in low and midlands along the West and East Coasts of India in sandy and laterite soils. Since it is mostly grown along the Coast across the Country it is also known as the Coastal Tree. Cashew grows along the West and East Coasts of India from South to North, lying between 09°N and 23oN latitudes. Though it grows beyond 23°N latitude, its production is relatively low as the reproductive phase coincides with cold injury/low temperature during
winter (December-February). Being a tropical coastal tree, it cannot thrive under low winter temperature. There is significant yield variation in cashew among the different agroclimatic zones of the country. Year-to-year yield variation is also significant as the crop is weather sensitive. This crop may come up even in waste lands with specific crop management practices along the West Coast and as a shelter belt and wind break along the East Coast.

Coconut, cocoa (cacao), coffee, cashew, cardamom, black pepper, tea, rubber, oil palm and areca nut are the major plantation crops that are perennially grown along the coastal belt in southern States of the Country and to some extent in high rainfall zones of the northeastern States of India. These crops are also known as perennial crops. The life span of these crops varies from fifteen to sixty years or more depending upon the crop and its management. Coconut and cashew are also popularly known as the coastal trees. Cardamom and black pepper are also known as the spice crops. Once these plantation crops are well established, they mature for fruiting in three to eight years depending upon the nature of plantation crops and the crop management. The reproductive phase is seen round-the-year in case of coconut and cocoa. Cashew is one of the plantation crops with seasonality in fruiting from September to June. Cocoa is mostly grown as an intercrop in coconut gardens and in some pockets as a pure crop. Black pepper is trained to coconut and areca nut in many locations and seen as mono crop as well. All these crops are grown in laterite, sandy and alike in well drained soils. The hill slopes with terrace cultivation are also suitable for all the plantation crops. Tea, coffee and cardamom are seen on hillocks extending up to the base. Some of the plantation crops are seen in multitier cropping system as well as mixed/intercrops/homestead gardens. They are grown mostly under the rain fed and summer irrigation is beneficial for better harvest. The plantation crop distribution, production and productivity are influenced by air temperature, rainfall and the other meteorological variables viz. sunshine, cloud cover, solar radiation, vapour pressure, evapotranspiration, humidity and wind. Interestingly, coffee spread in Wayanad District while cardamom in Idukki District. Coffee experiences unimodel rainfall while bimodal in the case of cardamom.

Introduction
Horticulture crops hold significant importance for their economic, nutritional, environmental, and aesthetic contributions. They contribute to agricultural GDP, create employment opportunities, and provide income for farmers and other stakeholders along the value chain. Horticultural crops often have highvalue market demand, leading to increased profitability for farmers and rural communities. The horticultural crops, including fruits, vegetables, nuts, and medicinal, spices are rich sources of essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. They contribute to a balanced and nutritious diet, promoting good
health and preventing various diseases. Consumption of horticultural crops is linked to reduced risks of chronic diseases, including heart disease and certain types of cancer. These crops have environmental benefits. They contribute to biodiversity conservation by providing habitats for various species and supporting beneficial insects and pollinators. Additionally, horticultural practices such as agroforestry, crop diversification, and organic farming methods can enhance soil health, reduce erosion, promote water conservation, and mitigate climate change impacts. Adak and Pandey (2018) emphasised soil management of horticultural crops for attaining food and nutritional security of farm women. Babu et al. (2022) explained scientific interventions for enhancing productivity and profitability of farmers’ engaged in horticultural sector while Gundappa et al. (2016c) recommended management protocols for effective controls of mango hoppers to growers. Even, digital solutions are now-a-days is being tried to improve economic prosperity of fruit growers (Verma and Adak, 2021). Horticulture crops contribute to food security by diversifying thefood supply. They provide an array of options beyond staple crops, ensuring a varied and nutritious diet for individuals and communities.

Horticulture is distinct from other economic sectors as its output is heavily reliant on weather conditions. The degree of success of horticultural production and economics is decided to a large extent by how well weather conditions corresponding to the crop’s optimal requirements are best utilized to raise the crops. Also, how successfully adverse weather circumstances, such as moisture, thermal, wind, radiation and biotic stresses were handled to minimize adversity. It is well understood that variability in weather elements (particularly rainfall and temperature) is the primary cause of inter-annual variability in crop output. The onset of weather extremes (dry spells, droughts, floods, heat waves, and hailstorms) has a negative impact on horticultural yield, resulting in a low level of productivity. Furthermore, weather can have an impact on output at multiple levels (vegetative stage, harvest, transportation, storage, etc.). Flooding, droughts, heat waves, cold spells, hailstorms, and other natural calamities pose significant risks to farms. These natural catastrophes can lead to lower yields, leaving uninsured farmers with little income for the season. Farmers often plant low-risk, low-return crops (such as early maturing varieties that are drought-resistant) to deal with erratic weather rather than investing in more profitable crops that are more sensitive to weather fluctuations and extremes. Thus, atmospheric stress has significant impacts on the food ecosystem (Bal and Minhas, 2017; MANAGE, 2018).

Saline agroecological systems are found in various regions worldwide, including coastal areas, arid and semi-arid regions, and areas affected by improper irrigation practices. These systems are characterized by high soil salinity levels, which can have detrimental effects on crop growth, nutrient availability and plant water uptake (Rai et al., 2020). Addressing these challenges requires specialized knowledge and tailored strategies to ensure sustainable agricultural practices in such environments (Dagar et al., 2019;
Sethi et al., 2016). Farm advisory and resource management services play a critical role in assisting farmers in saline agroecological systems by providing expert guidance, information dissemination, capacity building, and policy support (Adak et al., 2020). Farm advisory can play a crucial role in helping farmers understand the intricacies of saline agroecological systems, including the causes of soil salinity, its effects on crop performance, and the necessary strategies for managing these challenges effectively. Farm advisory can assist farmers in selecting suitable crop varieties that exhibit tolerance to high salinity levels. This requires comprehensive knowledge of salt-tolerant crops and and nutritional needs. Providing information on the performance and market
demand of different crop varieties enables farmers to make informed decisions about crop selection, optimizing productivity in saline agroecological systems (Kumar et al., 2020; Singh et al., 2021). Introduction
Farm advisories have played a key role in transforming India’s agriculture, helping the country shift from a food deficit to a surplus nation. The Indian public agricultural extension system has been instrumental in this transformation through Green Revolution in the 1960s, but by the end of the 1970s, its role had started to decline. Critics argued that the system had become a monolithic organization without clear objectives (Babu et al., 2013). According to NSSO data, in 2004, public extension services in India, including the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, extension workers, field demonstrations and study tours, reached to less than ten percent of farmers. Instead, farmers relied mostly on other progressive farmers (17%) and input dealers (13%) for information, while mass media including radio, television and newspaper played a significant role reaching to more than thirty percent farmers (Mkhize and Zhou, 2012; Meena et al., 2022a). One of the major constraints in agricultural extension services (AES) in the country is the shortage of extension staff. According to a report, in 2012-13, a single extension functionary served 1,162 operationalholdings, whereas the recommended ratio was 1:400 in hilly areas, 1:750 in irrigated areas, and 1:1000 in rain-fed areas. Input dealers often provide manipulated information specific to the crops grown by farmers, affecting their decision-making process.

Introduction
Forecasting of future weather conditions are based upon the collection and analysis of meteorological observations. With the help of advanced computing system and satellite data, the accuracy of weather forecasting is improving day by day. Weather forecasts may be classified according to the space and time scale of the predicted phenomena. With advanced technology, the spatial resolution of accurate forecast is enhanced and India Meteorological Department (IMD) has started to issue the Block-level forecast. The meteorological phenomenon can be distinguished among three classes of phenomena with a scale that is larger than the turbulent microscale: the mesoscale, synoptic scale, and planetary scale (Geer et al., 2018). Considering the variability of agro-climatic condition of India, the micro-level weather based agro-advisory has great importance to enhance the farm income. IMD has initiated the Block-level Agromet Advisory Services (AAS) in collaboration with Indian Council of Agricultural Research through establishment of District Agromet Units (DAMUs) at various Krishi Vigyan Kendra’s (KVK). Improvisation of the existing District-level Agromet Advisory Services (AAS) and starting of Block-level services are the basic objectives of DAMU. The District Agromet Units will act as nodal centre to prepare and disseminate the crop and locationspecific AAS to farmers at block level. Apart from this, the micro-level Agromet Advisory Service was implemented at NICRA (National Innovation on Climate Resilient Agriculture) villages through a network project of Indian  Council of Agricultural Research (Banerjee et al, 2018; Chakraborty et al., 2018). As a part of the nation-wide program, the feasibility of village level agromet advisory has been assessed. Thus, the importance of micro-level  agromet advisory and advisory on extreme weather events are discussed in this chapter.

Spices have been considered significant in the culinary art from time immemorial. India, “The Homeland of Spices” is one among the largest producers, consumers and exporters of spices as well as spice products. Spices comprise different plant components such as floral parts or fruits or berries or seeds or rhizomes or roots or leaves or kernel or aril or bark or bulbs. The recorded history of the use of spices dates back to 5000 years or so from the Egyptian or at the most from the Indus valley civilization. Spices are used for flavouring, seasoning and imparting aroma in various cuisines. Besides these inherent qualities, some of them are known to be fungistatic, antimicrobial or antibiotic. They are also processed into numerous ‘value added’ products such as oleoresins, essential oils, curry powder etc. Black pepper, cardamom and turmeric are the major spice crops and its production and marketing are the main economy stays of lakhs of people of the country. Billions of rupees are involved in domestic trading and foreign export. Therefore, it is highly imperative for farmers to adopt the advanced practices to sustain spices productivity. Even, additional income could be generated from the intercropping of spices from the interspaces in mango orchards (Shukla and Adak, 2020). Thus the present chapter included all aspects of production to protection and value addition for  the benefits of growers.

Introduction
Management of abiotic stresses in fruit orchards are essential and key issue for sustaining productivity. Worldwide fruit consumption has increased significantly because of the new recognitions of its broad relevance for health, nutrition and livelihood (Lansky and Newman, 2007). Fruits like pomegranate, grapes, dragon fruit, mango and sapota are being grown in tropical humid to dry as well as arid and semi-arid climates of India, especially in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat. Significant cultivars such as Bhagwa of pomegranate, Hapus, Kesar, Langra, Banganpalli, Totapuri of mango and Kallipati, Cricket ball of Sapota are being dominantly grown in these areas. Area under pomegranate was 2.62 lakh ha in 2018-19, producing 30.04 lakh MT at a productivity of 11.58  ha-1 with an export of 80.5 thousand MT during 2019-20 (Maity et al., 2020). The estimated area under grapes, mango, pomegranate and sapota in India is 0.14, 2.29, 0.26, 0.08 million ha, respectively whereas production estimates are reported to be 31.25, 204. 44, 23.15 and 10.03 million MT, respectively (NHB 2019-20 2nd estimate). Besides area of dragon fruit in India is rapidly expanding due to its high nutritional content, antioxidant properties, and market opportunities, covering around 20 thousand ha with annual production of 0.3 million MT. Despite the fact that >15 species of Hylocereus have been reported; only 3 to 4 are under cultivation. Among these, white flesh (H. undatus) occupied more than half of the area. However, the current premium pricing and consumer demand for pink flesh may shift cultivation to H. polyrhizus. Furthermore, species with yellow peel and white flesh (H. megalanthus) is now being cultivated. In this context, the issuances of agro-advisory services to farmers are essential for adopting time bound management protocols (Adak et al.,2018a). The importance of this scientific management is significantly linked with the fruit business both in domestic market and foreign export. Therefore, it is of great importance for advisory, training, farmers-scientific interaction and other human resource management programmes to sensitize and develop trained man power sufficiently which contributes to the horticultural growth and development. In this backdrop, fruit orchards and their scientific management is discussed in this chapter with special reference to abiotic and biotic stress management in Pune region of Maharashtra.

Standard Operating Protocol for Export of Banana
Banana is one of the important fruit grown in India, as far as its export is concerned it is very limited which is below 1%. For export market it should be harvested at 85% maturity or the bunch is ready to harvest in 80-82 days after shooting initiation. Bunches are to be harvested carefully with two people. One person cut the hand and another person put the bunch onto the padding shoulder. Bunches should be slant cut with sickle shaped sharp knife free from any contamination. For export purpose banana fingers should be square, lie close together, hard, clean and free from any infestation and mucilaginous thread of pulp should be 4-5 cm in length. Skin should not be separated from pulp and no brown spot under the skin. De-handing must be done with sharp chisel type de-handing tool, by leaving maximum crown attached to the hand. The crown should be cut evenly; otherwise its outer finger may be detached. Other way to De-handing by using the nylon thread. It is easy method and it allows maximum crown attach with the land with minimum latex flow. The hands should be carefully paced in clean water which has alum 1 gm litre-1 or sodium hypochlorite (200 ppm) as surfactant for removing the latex and killing the micro-organism after that fruit must be packed in 20-25 kg capacity crates having foam in bottom and in between hands also. The most effective control of post harvest diseases and control of ripening of banana is treating the hands with 1.0% CISH METWASH an organic formulation for 30-60 seconds after that it should be carefully removed from this organic formulation and keep it in front of high speed fan for drying.

Among subtropical fruit crops mango, guava, bael and aonla are among the most important ones. The productivity of these crops is affected by many factors, among which diseases have their own economic significance. The crops use to suffer from a large number of diseases, however, economically important diseases having significance in agro-advisory are mentioned below.
Mango Wilt and Decline
The mango wilt disease caused by Ceratocystis fimbriata is one of the most devastating diseases (Shukla et al., 2015, 2018b, 2020; Shukla, 2020). Association of Berkeleomyces basicola and Lasidiplodia theobromae in wilt, decline and branch drying has also been observed. Symptoms: Ceratocystis infection on the trees causes dark staining of the affected wood, exudation of gum, leaf drying and ultimately death of the tree (Al Adawi et al., 2003; Shukla et al., 2018b). Later symptoms include vascular discolouration beneath the gummosis (Masood et al., 2008; Shukla et al., 2018b). The symptoms may appear in the form of sudden wilt, decline or branch drying and accordingly the whole tree or branch may die within a period of a fortnight to six months of appearance of first symptom.

Globally, mangoes hold a significant economic and cultural position. Mangoes are grown in over 90 countries, with India, China, and Thailand being leading producers. They contribute
significantly to the agricultural economies of these and other tropical and subtropical regions (Makarabbi, 2023). Mangoes are a major export commodity for many countries, generating substantial foreign exchange. For instance, India’s mango exports account for a sizable share of the global mango market, valued at millions of dollars annually. In many developing countries, mango farming supports millions of smallholder farmers, providing employment and a source of income (Thakor, 2019). Mangoes are enjoyed in numerous forms— fresh, dried, as juices, pickles, and chutneys. They are also a key ingredient in various traditional dishes and desserts across different cultures. Mangoes play a central role in several cultural festivals and rituals, symbolizing prosperityand good fortune in countries like India and the Philippines. Mangoes are rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, including vitamins A and C, folate, and fiber. Their consumption is associated with various health benefits, such as improved immunity, digestive health, and skin care (Yahia et al., 2023). While mangoes offer significant benefits, their cultivation faces several challenges, primarily due to pest infestations that can severely impact both yield and fruit quality. Effective management of these pests is crucial to ensure sustainable mango production (Singh and Baradevanal, 2021).
