Introduction to Soil Restoration and Management

One of the most crucial elements for human survival is the availability of arable land. Desertification caused by land degradation has emerged as a serious global environmental threat to human well-being and sustainable development in recent years because of both climatic shifts and an increase in human activities that have direct impacts on soil. It has been widely alarmed by the United Nations Convention to combat desertification and has shown considerable interest in this issue (UNCCD, 2015). Soil degradation is used to describe the transformation of arable land into unproductive land because of natural processes, typically accelerated by human activity (Lal, 1993).

Waste management and soil sustainability are two critical aspects of environmental conservation and sustainable development. As our global population continues to grow and consume resources at unprecedented rates, it becomes increasingly important to manage waste effectively and preserve our soil health and productivity. Anthropogenic activities have consistently produced waste. The World Bank predicts that worldwide garbage production will rise to 70% by 2050 if no substantial actions are taken (Ghosh, 2020). This was not a significant problem when the world’s population was small; however, it is acquired as a major concern with industrialization and urbanization revolution. Lack of proper waste management has caused pollution of water, land, and atmosphere, as well as a significant effect on human health (Raza et al., 2022a; Raza et al., 2022b).

Soil plays a vital role in fulfilling fundamental human requirements, such as the provision of sustenance and water, while also serving as the primary medium for supporting biodiversity. The sustainability of soil in the 21st century is dependent upon not only the implementation of effective management practices by farmers, foresters, and land-planners, but also on government regulations, policies, marketing strategies, and subsidies (Mishra et al., 2017). The increasing influence of human activities on the Earth’s natural environment has led to significant global challenges concerning the interplay of planetary and public health (J. Huang et al., 2018).

More than three billion people are at risk of poverty due to land degradation caused by humans (Kansanga, Kerr, Lupafya, Dakishoni, & Luginaah, 2021). The implementation of Soil Sustainability Management (SSM) practices remains low among smallholder farmers, despite the fact that SSM has developed as a generally accepted technique to tackling soil degradation in Agro ecosystems (Kansanga et al., 2021). When it comes to food, water, energy, climate, biodiversity, and the provision of ecosystem services, soil plays a pivotal role in addressing these global environmental sustainability concerns (McBratney, Field, & Koch, 2014). The availability of food, fiber, clean water, and a varied landscape are all dependent on healthy soil.

Overview of the Chapter’s Focus on Agroecology and Soil Sustainability

The ecology and biodiversity of our globe are being threatened by human activity, notably unsustainable agriculture methods. This chapter explores the vital function of agroecology, the intersection of ecological and agricultural concepts, in promoting sustainable farming systems. Soil sustainability, essential for effective and resilient agrarian operations, is critical to this strategy. Here, we give an overview of these key terms and talk about the pressing need to switch to sustainable agriculture methods to preserve the  health of the soil, increase food security, and create adaptable environments.

Soil is a vital, complex, and firm layer of the land surface that provides a source of minerals and organic matter interacting with air and water to harbor life forms. (Lobmann et al., 2022). Versatile micro and macro living organisms, i.e., bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes, inhabit soil and contribute to its quality, health, and inevitable role in serving the environment (Elsakhawy et al., 2022). Soil roots for a variety of crucial functions which involve ecosystem services or socioeconomic activities, e.g., biomass production, climate gas fluxes of CO2 , N2 O, and CH4 , water cleaning, storage and supply, foundation of construction and provision of construction materials, or provision of habitats etc. The responsibility of soil in sustaining life on earth by providing and conserving resources is not negotiable.

Future agricultural production potential is in danger due to the existing cropping system, characterized by irresponsible chemical utilization, extensive tillage, monoculture, and soil health degradation. Consequently, a significant challenge for modern agriculture lies in ensuring adequate nourishment for the entire world’s population while also safeguarding the environment. The intensification of agricultural practices negatively impacts vital natural resources like soil, water, air, and biodiversity throughout various developmental stages. While the conventional cropping system have enhanced crop productivity, its consequences including land degradation, resource depletion, reduced organic matter insoil, draught, soil salinity, erosion, and climate change pose significant global threats (Tomar et al. 2014; Yadav et al. 2014; Mandal et al. 2020; Rani et al. 2021).

According to the Forest Survey of India (FSI) “all lands, more than one hectare in area, with a tree canopy density of more than 10% is defined as Forest” (FSI 2009). The status of forests and forest management systems contribute to the vulnerability of forests to climate change. Indian forests are extremely diverse and heterogeneous. Forests and Climate Change are intimately intertwined. Forests have regulated the climate, rain, groundwater, soil of the earth over millennia. Their transpiration act as a regulator of the balance of oxygen and carbon-di-oxide: the world’s forests and forest soils currently store more than one trillion tons of carbon – twice the amount found floating free in the atmosphere. The forest and soils are home of biological diversity.

More than a third is covered by drylands in the terrestrial land surface, which have a harsh and vulnerable natural condition (Maier et al., 2014). Due to insufficient water availability, dry areas have a scant population of vascular plants, as well as poor availability of the nutrient turnover with poor availability of the resources as a result of severe temperatures (Adeel, 2008). Biological soil crusts or Biocrusts commonly protects the soil surface in dry environments and it is considered “ecosystem engineers” of arid and semiarid areas, as well as signs of ecosystem health (Briggs and Morgan, 2011; Bowker et al., 2008). They are connected in dryland ecosystem restoration level or degradation (Assouline et al., 2015). When compared to chemical or physical crusts, biocrust is the largest word that explicitly implies that these are the crusts which are dependent on the living organisms’ activity.

`The living and nonliving components of ecosystems, as well as the conditions and processes that occur within them, create services thus connecting ecosystems and human cultures. The preservation of Earth’s biological diversity and the protection of the benefits, or “ecosystem services,” those functioning ecosystems bring to humanity are two primary goals of environmental conservation. Agroforestry is increasingly viewed as providing ecological services, environmental advantages, and economic gains as part of a multifunctional working landscape. The multifunctional importance of agroecosystems was emphasized in both the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MES 2005) and the International Assessment of Agricultural Science and Technology for Development (2008).

In recent decades, integrating trees with crops for food and wood production has received considerable attention in both tropical (Garrity et al., 2010) and temperate regions (Palma et al., 2007). The growing of trees in combination with the agricultural crop is a land management practice that farmers have been practicing since the ancient period. Seasonal agricultural/horticulture crops, woody perennial trees (multipurpose), and/or animals are major components of various agroforestry systems. According to Sanchez (1995), the science of agroforestry revolves around four aspects: competitiveness, complexity, sustainability, and profitability, and all of these factors must be balanced in order to produce beneficial outcomes. In fact, agroforestry is significantly assisting in meeting the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) such as poverty and hunger eradication, improved health, nutrition, and education for people, gender equality, and environmental sustainability, particularly in developing countries (Garrity, 2004, 2006).

Agroforestry being old as an art and new in its scientific terms has been gaining importance in the modern era due to shift of world from technology to nature in search of resilient way of sustaining livelihood (Dutta et al., 2023, Sharma et al., 2023 Bishaw et al., 2022, Agnoletti et al., 2022). The simplicity of the agroforestry system is the flagship reason of its widespread applicability and reliability in agricultural domains. There has been change in the world perspective regarding the nature and natural resources in recent times. Although there has been forest over 31 per cent of the world’s total geographical area (FAO and UNEP, 2022) but the stabilization of ecosystem and sustainable development is difficult without subsequent interaction between the tree, crop and livestock component on farm lands, being collectively called as agroforestry.

Increasing fresh water demands for ever growing population and it has increased by 600% over the past 100 year (Wada, et. Al, 2016) the annual increment rate 1.8 % whereas the present growth rate is less, only 1 % but this figure may be optimistic. The global water demands will grow significantly over the next two decades in all three components as: Industry, domestic and agriculture (U.N, 2018) industry and domestic demand will grow faster than agriculture, but agriculture demands will remain largest (U.N, 2018). The global water demands for all purpose will increase 20% to 30% by 2050, up to 5,500 to 6,000 km3 per year (Burek et.al, 2016), whereas, agricultural demands will increase by 60% by 2025 (Alexandrators and Bruinsma, 2012).

The rhizosphere plays a pivotal role in the boundary where biological and chemical activities profoundly impact various landscape and global-scale processes. Understanding these processes is crucial for maintaining planetary health and sustaining the organisms inhabiting it (Morrissey et al., 2004). To enhance the yield potential of staple food crops, leveraging the root systems of plants becomes essential to meet the anticipated doubling of global food demand in the future (Gewvin, 2010; Zhang et al., 2010). Amidst the challenges posed by global climate change and the burgeoning global population, there’s an increasing need for greater productivity from cultivated food, animal feed, and fibers on less favorable and often infertile lands—conditions already prevalent in many developing nations (Tilman et al., 2002). Advancing our understanding and control of rhizosphere processes stands as a critical frontier in research for the next decade.

1.1. Introduction: India’s present population, growth rate & projections

India is the second-most populous country in the world after China with its population of about 1.38 billion in the year 2020. The Population Division under the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, of the United Nations, has projected the country’s population to be growing to about 1.50 billion by the year 2030, and 1.64 billion by 2050, of course with its decreasing annual growth rate from 1.04 to 0.25% or so during the period of next thirty years (Fig. 1.1; UNDESA, 2019). The projection says the Indian population will exceed China by the year 2030 even with its decreasing rate i.e. India will be the most populous country by then. As agriculture and allied sectors are the backbone of this country and the largest livelihood source, it support this growing human and livestock population with diversified natural resources and varied agro-climatic conditions. However, the sustainability of agricultural production should be maintained in the face of perturbation and stress on the agro-ecosystem especially the degraded natural resource base and changing climate.

2.1. Introduction

Water plays a pivotal role in this earth system. The withdrawal of water for irrigation is about 70% of the global freshwater. Water use efficiency is less than 50% in many countries. It has been forecasted by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO, 2015) that global water requirements will be increased by 50% by the year 2050 to meet the demands of agricultural water use. This is so because food demand will be higher for the growing human population. We have entered into an earth system where everything living has evolved and developed (Cosgrove and Loucks, 2015). There has been a new geological scenario, some say Anthropocene (Crutzen, 2002; Williams et al., 2011). Consequently, freshwater will increasingly be a scarce and the costliest resource in the future, which needs to be managed properly.

3.1. Introduction

Rice is grown in varying geographical locations and climatic situations. Most of the rice area lies between the equator and 400 N latitude and between 700 and 1400 E longitude. It grows well from tropical to sub-tropical warm and temperate climatic regions up to 400 S and 500 N of the equator. However, the highest yields are obtained in the region between 300 and 450 N of the equator. The average yield generally increases as the countries are situated further away from the equator (Chatterjee and Maiti, 1985). In India, rice grows in regions from 80 N to 350 N latitudes under widely varying conditions of the land, rainfall, altitude and climatic conditions. It is grown at the sea level in river deltas as in parts of Kerala, as deepwater in states of West Bengal, Assam and Bihar; at high altitudes of 914 to 1524 m or even more as in Kashmir, and in the slopes of the Himalayas. A temperature range of 200 C to 37.70 C is required throughout the life period of rice crop.

4.1. Introduction

Globally, rice is cultivated on about 165 million ha of land, which provides around 787 million tons of paddy annually (FAO, 2023). In Asia, 708 million tons of paddy is produced from nearly 143 million rice-cultivated areas. Rice crop is grown in a wide range of climates, varied soil types, and hydrological situations. Rice is the lone cereal crop that grows well in floods.

The rice habitat can be divided into four groups based on the hydrology of the rice field: irrigated lowland rice (79~80 million ha), rainfed lowland rice (54~55 million ha), upland rice (14~15 million ha), and flood-prone rice (11~12 million ha) (Table 4.1) (Bouman et al., 2006).

5.1. Introduction

Rice-fallows are a rainfed rice mono-crop production system, where only a single crop (rice) is grown and these lands remain without any crop for the rest of the period of the year (fallow). An estimate shows that rice-fallow areas extended over 22.3 M ha in South Asia, maximum in India ( 88.3%) followed by Bangladesh (8.7%), Nepal (1.4%), Sri Lanka (1.1%), Pakistan (0.5%), and Bhutan (0.02%) (Gumma et al., 2016). The eastern part of India accounts for ~ 84% (9.7 million ha) of the country’s total rice-fallow area (i.e. 11.7 million ha) (Ali et al., 2014; Singh et al., 2017), despite high rainfall during rainy / monsoon season. The reasons are that after the rainy season, irrigation facilities are lacking, very fast depletion of the soil residual moisture due to temperature rise, the poor economic condition of the farmers, and a lack of awareness or knowledge of available technologies. Additionally, delayed harvesting of long-duration rice (150-160 days) results in late sowing of winter crops, which, in turn, exacerbates the temperature and moisture stresses in winter crops (Kumar et al., 2018a; 2018b). Overall, the challenges of growing another crop in rice-fallow areas are the lack of irrigation facilities including declining groundwater levels, the dominance of the long-duration rice varieties cultivation, higher evaporative loss of the residual soil moisture, degradation of soil quality, and poor financial conditions of the farming community with diminishing profit. Recently, climate change with erratic rainfall and delayed monsoon arrival added more challenges for these areas in several places. Deficit soil moisture imposes stress on the crops and negatively affects the winter crops productivity in the rice-fallow system, and several times it results in complete crop failure (Singh et al., 2012; Ghosh et al., 2016).

6.1. Introduction

The growing human population presents a number of issues, including food scarcity, malnutrition, inadequate natural resources (land and water) for agricultural production, and environmental deterioration (MacDonald, 2010). Today, viable intensification of agri-production systems can fulfill rising food, nutrition and environmental demands (Pretty and Bharucha, 2014). Production of rice (Oryza sativa L.), a vital element of food security, which feeds nearly half of the world's population, occupies 143 million hectares of land (FAOSTAT, 2023), and uses up to 90% of all irrigation water in Asia (Liu et al., 2018). For instance, it has been determined that systems for producing rice are one of the main industries that wastes water resources and greatly increases greenhouse gas emissions (FAO, 2013). Therefore, it is necessary to look for ways to manage the rice production system more effectively. In paddy rice systems, co cultivating aquatic animals (fish, shrimp, crab, shellfish, and ducks) and rice has been suggested as a way to reduce the risks of environmental pollution/ contamination linked with rice production while simultaneously optimizing the use of land and water resources to provide humans with both grains and meat (Hu et al., 2016; Ahmed and Garnett, 2011). Co-culture systems have drawn more interest recently due to their potential to reduce the stresses associated with environmental and food insecurity.

7.1. Introduction

The integrated farming system (IFS) is becoming increasingly important for effective farm resource management in order to increase farm productivity, reduce environmental degradation, improve the quality of life for resource-poor farmers, and ensure sustainability. Integration happens when one production sub-system's outputs (typically by-products) are used as inputs in another within the farm unit (Radhammani et al., 2003; Lightfoot and Minnick, 1991). IFS are a mixed farming system made up of at least two distinct but logically linked components of crop and animal enterprises. The integrated farming system is effective in reducing risk, increasing productivity and revenues, and improving the use of organic waste and agricultural leftovers.

8.1. Biofloc aquaculture

Among the innovations in the field of aquaculture, biofloc technology (BFT) has attracted great attention due to its ability to foster the goals of sustainable aquaculture (Khanjani et al., 2022a). If implemented correctly, BFT capitalizes on the existing organisms in water to significantly reduce water use and environmental impact and increase biosafety at farms (Avnimelech, 2012).

9.1. Introduction

Human dependence on natural processes for the goods and services provided by nature, especially food, fuel and fibre, has been a known fact. In recent times, the value of less tangible services, such as climate control, water f iltration, and soil fertility, as well as recreational and cultural services has been emphasized also. Ecosystem services underpin human existence, health, and prosperity. It has been beneficial to humans through the transformations of resources (or environmental assets, including land, water, vegetation, and the atmosphere) into a flow of essential goods and services like clean air, water, and food (Costanza et al., 1997). Ecosystem services are those functions of ecosystems- including agroecosystems that are useful to humans or supportive of human well-being (Kremen, 2005). Services provided by ecosystems receive little notice for their support to human civilization often leading to poor management of the ecosystems. Land use systems influence ecosystem functions, which determine the supply of ecosystem services. Land and water resources are under considerable pressure from the expansion of cultivated and residential lands. Diverse land use in agrarian landscapes not only fosters biodiversity, but also provides potential ecosystem services such as air cleaning by vegetation, natural water filtration by plant roots, natural pest suppression, soil conservation, nutrient retention, and crop pollination by insects, etc. Lowland floodplains or waterlogged land areas are generally more conscious of the benefits provided by ecosystem services. It is important to create awareness among the people on provisioning services provided by ecosystems, such as crops, biofuel, fresh water, natural medicine, wildlife, and several cultural services. Managing ecosystem services, which link human well-being to conservation outcomes, is essential for achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (Zhang, 2017).

10.1. Introduction

Irrigation facilities are created by the Government at huge cost for supplying water to the farmers for raising crops to increase agricultural production. The major and medium irrigation projects are planned, constructed, managed, operated and maintained by the Irrigation Departments, wherein certain procedures and rules are evolved and followed to the delivery schedule of canals, frequency of supply and distribution of water to the farmers, and closing of canals. The creation of such facilities resulted in ushering the green revolution in the sixties and seventies in the production of food grains and also employment generation in the country, thereby improving the socio-economic condition of Indian farmers. However, optimized management of irrigation water is the key to the sustainable development of agriculture and livestock. Since management of water for irrigation is highly location-specific, depending upon agro-ecological and socio-economic conditions, type of irrigation project and land use pattern, it differs from project to project and region to region in the country.

The term “Remote Sensing” was coined in 1950s by Ms. Evelyn Pruitt, a geographer with the U.S. Office of Naval Research, and the term is now commonly used to describe as the science and art of identifying, observing, and measuring an object on the earth surface, without having any direct contact. This process involves the detection and measurement of radiation of different wavelengths reflected or emitted from distant objects or materials through which they may be identified and categorized by class/type, substance, and spatial distribution (National Aeronautics and Space Administration—NASA). Remote sensing technology has been widely applied in various applications such as water resources, agriculture, geological studies, forestry, land use, resource exploration, etc.

Watershed management has emerged as an important research area in recent years. Understanding the morphology of the catchment is one of the widely used methods for watershed management. Morphometry is the measurement and mathematical analysis of the configuration of the earth’s surface, shape, and dimension of its landforms (Agarwal 1998; Obi Reddy et al., 2002). The study of watershed is very useful in drainage basin evaluation, silt erosion control, flood frequency analysis, watershed prioritization, natural resources management, and conservation (Waikar and Nilawar, 2014). The significance of morphometric analysis is highlighted in the basins that are either un-gauged or difficult to access. The morphometry is usually analyzed through measurement of linear, aerial, relief, gradient of channel network, and contributing ground slope of the basin (Magesh et al., 2012). The hydrological behavior of a basin can be easily determined through the areal parameters (Mahala, 2020.) The evolutionary history of any basin can be best understood through the implication of different relief morphometric measures of drainage basin (Sharma and Sarma, 2013).

GIS and RS techniques are proven convenient methods for morphometric characterization of sub-watersheds and prioritization of watersheds. As the satellite images provide a synoptic view of a large area, the RS and GIS methods become very useful in the analysis of drainage basin morphometry (Rai et al., 2017). Thus, the morphometric analysis using spatial techniques has emerged to be the fast and efficient method as compared to most of the conventional methods (Rao et al., 2010) such as manual extraction of drainage network and assigning the stream order from a published Survey of India topographic map. The present study aims at using remote sensing and GIS technology to compute various parameters of morphometric characteristics of the Chaliyar River basin.

Groundwater resources are under stress globally due to various reasons including increasing water demand, impending climate change, industrialization, land use/land cover changes, etc. Adequate sustainable development strategies have to be adopted for the management of groundwater resources. Irrespective of the developmental status of countries all over the world, groundwater serves as a crucial resource for meeting fundamental needs. However, increasing population, water demand, surface water contamination, and recent patterns of climate unpredictability have caused increasing reliance on groundwater as reported by several researchers (Adimalla and Taloor 2020; Aladejana et al. 2020; Cuthbert et al. 2019; Green 2016; Hamed et al. 2018; Jasrotia et al. 2019; Khalaj et al. 2019; Li 2016; McGill et al. 2019; Morsy et al. 2017; Taloor et al. 2020).

Even in India, water scarcity has been reported in many parts, though the country receives relatively higher rainfall. However, the rainfall pattern has changed over the last few years. The country has been experiencing significant spatiotemporal changes in rainfall patterns, leading to fewer rainy days and more extreme rainfall, which many studies have attributed to global climate change and anthropogenic influences. The rainfall variability has substantial impacts on water availability, agricultural productivity, and welfare of the 1.2 billion people in India because agriculture in India feeds about 17.2% of the global population and more than 56% of the agricultural land is rain-fed. Rapid and heavy patterns of rainfall result in the draining of most of the rainfall as surface runoff particularly on higher slopes, and reaches the surface water bodies, thereby reducing the infiltration and subsequent groundwater recharge. These variations in rainfall have ultimately affected the groundwater behavior and availability in many river basins.

Climate change and human activities have emerged as significant factors affecting water resources in diverse regions (Kumar et al. 2022; Haddeland et al. 2014). The escalation in human water consumption for domestic and industrial purposes enhanced by the impacts of climate change has resulted in an overall decline in water availability (Liu et al. 2017; Paul et al. 2021). Rising temperatures and altered precipitation patterns directly influence water availability for ecosystems and agriculture potentially leading to greater evapotranspiration rates, intensified rainfall events, and prolonged droughts (Sharannya et al. 2021; Myers et al. 2023). Furthermore, urbanization, deforestation, and agricultural practices alter landscapes, affecting water resources in these areas.

Water shortages pose threats to ecosystem health, and socio-economic development and disrupt agricultural production (Piao et al. 2010). Thus, ensuring sustainable and efficient water usage necessitates accounting for water usage and quantifying it in a changing environment. To comprehensively assess the significance of water resources in the environment, Falkenmark (1995) introduced the concept of blue water (BW) and green water (GW) water, particularly for managing water resources in water-stressed regions. Green water refers to the portion of precipitation that infiltrates into the unsaturated soil layer and is subsequently utilized by plants through transpiration and soil evaporation. In fact, “blue water” represents surface and groundwater flow in rivers, lakes, and aquifers (Abate et al 2024; Sharannya et al. 2021). While numerous studies have investigated the spatial and temporal variation of BW and GW using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) (Feng et al. 2021; Li et al. 2009; Lyu et al. 2019), fewer publications have focused on assessing these variations and uncertainties at the basin scale under varying climate scenarios (Sharma et al. 2023). Hydrological models such as SWAT, serve as valuable tools for simulating past and future hydrological changes in the watersheds using projected climate data. SWAT specifically can simulate both blue and green flows at the watershed scale.

Rainfall is one of the climatic variables that varies very highly spatially and temporally. Understanding this micro-level variation is a crucial indicator for planning future water requirements and preparing for management strategies. Numerous researchers have delved into the distribution, variability, and trends of rainfall across diverse spatial scales, ranging from global to regional and basin levels. Nair et al. (2014) analyzed the rainfall trend and seasonality index for Kerala state in India over the last 100 years. The rainfall trend was found to be decreasing significantly in almost all the regions of the state. Nischitha et al. (2013) provide insights into the spatial and temporal variability of daily monsoon rainfall in the Tunga and Bhadra River basins in Karnataka state. Paradkar et al. (2019) evaluated the pattern of weekly rainfall by using statistical parameters such as mean, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis for five stations in Pratapgarh district.

Geographical Information System (GIS) proved to be an effective tool in handling information and analyzing rainfall patterns, providing visual representations, and facilitating the decision-making process (Kadir et al. (2016) and Rao et al. (2017)). Anand et al. (2020) analyzed the long-term spatial and temporal trends of rainfall in the Lower Bhavani basin in Tamil Nadu, India using GIS and statistical methods. Earls et al. (2007) compared different interpolation methods such as Inverse Distance Weighting, Spline, and Kriging (ordinary and universal) to generate a 30 m representation of the rainfall data. Spatial interpolation techniques perform differently and their evaluation should not rely solely on quantitative assessment. Wu & Hung (2016) compared the performance of three spatial interpolation techniques i.e., IDW, kriging, and spline using quantitative assessment, 2D visualization, and 3D visualization. IDW and kriging performed similarly in terms of quantitative assessment, while spline performed worse. IDW and spline performed similarly in 2D visualization, while kriging showed different behavior. Kriging was observed to be an inexact interpolation in 3D visualization, while spline tended to create extreme values along the edges of the study area. Some studies discovered that the accuracy of Kriging in the study area is higher than that of IDW or Thiessen interpolations (Earls et al. 2007; Song et al. 2008; Chen et al. 2010). GIS applications have the capability to integrate spatial data and non-spatial data like rainfall and to visualize, model, and analyze how rainfall distribution varies across space and over time, providing insights into climate change, water resource management, agricultural planning, and disaster management. The present study aims to analyze annual rainfall data pertaining to Kerala state in the GIS environment.

Introduction to GIS

QGIS (Quantum GIS) is an open-source Geographic Information System (GIS) software has been used to showcase various exercises pertaining to viewing, editing, analyzing, and printing of the geospatial data. QGIS helps to allow the users to easily access and manage geographic data stored in folders on local disks or relational databases available on the user’s network. QGIS supports raster, vector, and mesh layers. QGIS also allows using data from external sources with the help of web services such as Web Map Service (WMS) and Web Feature Service. QGIS is a constantly developing software as anyone can add new features or update existing tools. Newer versions of QGIS are frequently released on the official website. It is a cross-platform software that can be installed in Windows, Linux, and MacOS.

Climate change is a complex and dynamic phenomenon that has significant impacts on agriculture, especially in terms of uncertainty and variability. Agricultural dynamics refer to the various factors that affect agricultural production, including climate, soil, water availability, pests, and diseases, as well as market forces and government policies. Climate change has significant impacts on agricultural dynamics. Variations in temperature, patterns of rainfall, and occurrences of extreme weather can influence crop yields and livestock production in both beneficial and detrimental ways (UCAR, 2021). The effects of climate change on farming can differ based on the geographical location and the specific agricultural practices employed (Wikipedia Contributors, 2019). For example, in some areas, increased rainfall may lead to increased crop yields, while in other areas, droughts may lead to crop failures and loss of income for farmers. Additionally, rising temperatures can cause reduced crop yields and decreased quality of some crops.

Uncertainty is a term used to describe a situation where there is a lack of information, knowledge, or predictability about a particular outcome or event. In agricultural dynamics, uncertainty can refer to a range of factors that can affect the production, distribution, and consumption of agricultural products. One of the most significant sources of uncertainty in agriculture is the weather. The productivity of crops can be significantly influenced by weather conditions, including rainfall and temperature and farmers need to effectively adjust their agricultural practices to adapt to these changing weather patterns (Guntukulaand Goyari, 2020). For example, droughts or floods can reduce crop yields, while frost or hail can damage crops(Lamaoui et al., 2018).

In the context of a thesis, theoretical orientation refers to the conceptual or theoretical framework or perspective that informs and shapes the overall approach and analysis of the research (Natalie, 2022). It involves selecting and adopting a specific set of theories, concepts, or models that provide a foundation for understanding and interpreting the research topic. The theoretical orientation helps to guide the methodology, and provide a coherent framework for organizing and analysing the data.

Theoretical orientation in a thesis serves several purposes. It helps to establish a theoretical basis for the study, providing a context for the research and connecting it to existing knowledge and theories in the field. It also helps to guide the selection of appropriate research methods and data analysis techniques. The theoretical orientation shapes the overall structure and content of the thesis, ensuring that the study is grounded in relevant theories and concepts and contributes to the existing body of knowledge. By adopting a specific theoretical orientation, the researcher can provide a clear and systematic framework for understanding and interpreting the findings of the study. This orientation also helps to establish credibility and validity for the research, as it demonstrates the researcher’s awareness of and engagement with the existing theoretical perspectives in the field.

The Review of literature is a systematic, explicit and reproducible method of identifying, evaluating and synthesizing the existing body of a completed and a recorded work produced by researchers, scholars and practitioners. The Review of literature is also a resource paper which includes the current knowledge including substantive findings as well as the theoretical and the methodological contributions to a particular topic. These are available mostly in academic and scholastic journals.

Review of literature provide the basics for research in nearly every academic f ield. This chapter is an extensive survey of all past studies relevant to the field of investigation which gives knowledge of what others have found out in the related field of study. In any scientific investigation or research, a comprehensive presentation of the review of literature is a statutory requirement.

The aim of review of literature is to highlight what has been done so far in the field of interest and how our findings are related to earlier research.

Its main functions are to develop a better understanding of the problem to be investigated, delineate a new area of study and avoid unnecessary duplication, decide on the tools and techniques to be adopted including developing some new ones and also to relate the present study with the previous ones by finding out the areas of agreement and disagreement.

The research setting provides specific details about the location where a study is conducted. This study area typically encompasses a particular geographical region, such as a state, district, block, or gram panchayat, chosen according to the research requirements. The researcher must have a thorough understanding of the locality, including its communication methods, in order to effectively access all parts of the region for data collection.

In social science research, a clear comprehension of the characteristics, attitudes, and behaviours of the individuals within the study area is essential. Without this understanding, accurately conceptualizing, perceiving, and interpreting data becomes challenging. To obtain a comprehensive understanding of the implications and behavioural intricacies of the local people representing a broader community in the referenced study area, researchers must have a solid grasp of these factors. Therefore, this chapter critically analyses the socio-demographic background of the residents in a rural setting.

The term “research setting” denotes the context in which research inputs and elements are absorbed, interacted with, and mutually contribute to the system’s overall performance.

The research setting is crucial because it shapes and influences the interactions of various factors and components. Therefore, conducting a study on how farmers perceive persuasive issues and other topics requires a local context that takes into account the unique natural environment, demographics, crop ecology, institutional framework, and socio-cultural factors. For example, when writing a paper about the social behaviour of chimpanzees, it is important to include details about the research setting. This may include information such as where the chimpanzees were studied (in the wild or in captivity), the number of chimpanzees that were observed, whether they were part of the same social group, the geographic location, the time of the study, the season/weather conditions, the availability of resources such as food, water, and shelter, and any environmental factors that were present.

The research methodology constitutes a comprehensive and well-structured plan of action for conducting the investigation and serves as a blueprint for the research process. Its purpose is to gain an understanding of the underlying concepts, methods, and techniques employed to define the study, gather relevant information, analyse data, and interpret the findings, thereby revealing concrete evidence and formulating theories.

This chapter focuses on presenting empirical findings from data analysis to provide sufficient interpretation so to draw reliable conclusions. To enhance and complement the textual contents of the study, tables and models are frequently utilized. Additionally, the discussion serves to contextualize the study’s findings and establish connections with the research work.

Result: The Table 13 depicts the distributive characteristics of the variables for the 90 respondents under the study.

Revelation: The pattern of distribution of the variable, Age (x1 ) depicts that the maximum age of the respondents is 70 and the minimum is 26. The mean value of age of the respondents is 42.98 with standard deviation of 10.77. The distribution of the variable is strongly consistent with a CV value of 25.06 per cent.

The pattern of distribution of the variable, Education (x2 ) depicts that the maximum education of the respondents is 5 and the minimum is 2. The mean value of education of the respondents is 4.09 with standard deviation of 0.82. The Coefficient of Variation is 19.96 per cent which indicates the distribution of variable is highly consistent.

7.1 Summary

Climate change is a complex global phenomenon that poses significant challenges for agriculture including uncertainty about future weather patterns, soil conditions, and other environmental factors. Farmers are facing the difficult task of interpreting and responding to these changes in order to maintain their livelihoods and ensure food security for growing populations. In this context, mental modelling has emerged as a useful approach for understanding how farmers interpret and respond to climate change. Mental models are cognitive representations of how individuals understand and make decisions about complex systems, and can be used to identify key drivers of behaviour and decision-making.

The present study has explored the social, ecological, and economic factors that influence farmers’ mental models on perception of climate change, level of uncertainty and trend of agricultural change in the selected study area. It argues that farmers’ mental models are shaped by a range of factors, including their own experiences and observations, social networks and interactions, access to information and resources, and broader economic and political contexts. The present study has also highlighted the role of uncertainty in shaping farmers’ mental models and decision-making. Uncertainty about the future impacts of climate change can create significant challenges for farmers, as they must make decisions based on incomplete information and uncertain predictions.

Despite the meticulous methodology and extensive analysis employed throughout this research project, it is crucial to acknowledge and address the limitations that arose during the study. By recognizing these limitations, we not only ensure a transparent evaluation of the research process but also shed light on potential areas for future investigations to refine and expand upon the findings.

In this section of the chapter, the limitations encountered in this thesis are highlighted as follows:

1. Due to the complexity of the concept, obtaining quantitative responses proved to be exceedingly challenging.

2. The development of improved scales for scoring could have enhanced the research if implemented.

3. The inclusion of a greater number of relevant variables could have provided a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the research topic.

4. Deploying mathematical optimization and simulations could have effectively integrated and co-integrated the seemingly disparate aspects of climate change perception, uncertainty perception, and perception of agricultural dynamics.

5. Presently, farmers are hesitant to engage in conversations and provide data to individuals outside their close social circles.

As the present study draws to a close, it opens up a myriad of possibilities for future research and exploration in the field of the present study. The insights gained and the findings presented in this thesis may provide a foundation for building upon and extending the existing body of knowledge. By identifying key areas that require additional attention and offering suggestions for future studies, this section of the chapter aims to inspire and guide researchers in their pursuit of enhancing our understanding and driving progress in this dynamic and evolving field.

The present study leaves behind the following domains which may be researched out in future:

1) The present research can be replicated with varied geo-spatial situations viz., in different locations and settings, with different respondents, with spatio-temporal expansion and methodological innovation.

2) PRA tools and materials can be deployed to collect more specific data to compensate for the inadequate information to go for the classical statistical approaches.

3) Multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) techniques can be integrated with mental modelling and fuzzy logic cognitive mapping so to enhance the decision-making process.

4) To realize the full potential of these frameworks, collaboration and knowledge sharing among researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and farmers are essential. Continued research and development efforts are needed to refine and validate the models, enhance user-friendliness, and adapt them to diverse agricultural systems and contexts.

Introduction

The foundation of agricultural productivity lies in the realm of weather and climate, a reality unaltered by technological progress. The consequences of climate change on agriculture represent a worldwide apprehension, particularly significant for India. Around 54.6% of the Indian population is engaged in agriculture and allied activities, contributing to 17.4% of the country’s total gross value added. The agriculture sector is battling a multitude of challenges, such as increasing food demand, depletion of agricultural lands and water resources, and the devastating effects of climate change. It is high time that we acknowledge and address these issues to safeguard the future of our food systems and ensure food security for all.

Climate change refers to the long-term variations in weather patterns and temperature over extended periods. Climate change occurs when earth’s climate system experiences variations in weather patterns that can last for decades or millions of years. These changes can arise naturally due to phenomena like volcanic eruptions or changes in solar activity. However, since the 1800s, human activities accelerate the natural pace of climate change, primarily due to the combustion of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas. These activities release greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide (CO2 ), methane (CH4 ), and nitrous oxide (N2 O) into the atmosphere, trapping heat and leading to a gradual increase in global temperatures. One of the most remarkable characteristics of climate change is the increase in temperature, which is widely referred to as global warming (Houghton, 2009). According to the report of Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change, the release of greenhouse gases caused by human actions has contributed to around 1.1°C of warming since the period between1850-1900. The report also predicts that the global temperature will likely increase to 1.5°C or more in the next 20 years (IPCC, 2021).

Introduction

Soil is a silent foundation and a dynamic part of Earth’s complex ecosystem. It sustains life, influences plant growth and is involved in various environmental processes. However, the balance of this vital resource is increasingly threatened by the pervasive effects of climate change, manifested by rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns and changes in atmospheric conditions. As global temperatures rise and weather patterns change, the relationship between soil and climate poses transformative challenges with far-reaching consequences. This research addresses the complexity of this interaction and examines how climate change affects agriculture, soil health, composition and functionality. Soil health, a holistic concept that includes physical, chemical and biological aspects of soils, is closely linked to climate change. A notable consequence of climate change is the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as droughts and floods. These events disrupt the delicate balance of soil ecosystems and lead to erosion, loss of topsoil and reduced fertility. Additionally, increased temperatures contribute to soil moisture depletion, reducing water availability for plants and microorganisms and further compromising soil health. A central issue at the interface between soil science and climate change is the role of soil as a carbon sink. Soils store large amounts of carbon in the form of organic material, thereby influencing the environment.

Introduction

Climate plays a crucial role in shaping the agricultural landscape of a region, and the changing climatic conditions pose a significant threat to global food security. In developing countries in Asia and Africa, the primary challenges to realizing optimal crop yields are declining soil fertility, particularly soil organic carbon and drought. The unchecked emission of greenhouse gases is expected to lead to a considerable rise in the average global temperature by 6°C in the next century, primarily driven by activities such as fossil burning and urbanization. Over the past centuries, there has been a noticeable increase in the concentration of CO2 and CH4 , with up to a 35% expected rise in nitrous oxide due to the improper use of nitrogenous fertilizers. Climate models predict a substantial impact on agricultural productivity in the 21st century, with rising temperatures and more frequent extreme weather events (NASA, 2022). To maintain agricultural productivity, it is imperative to understand the effects of increasing temperatures, shifting precipitation patterns, and rising CO2 levels on soil health. It is noteworthy that climate is one of the key factors influencing soil formation, alongside four other factors. Temperature and precipitation directly affect soil formation by providing the necessary conditions for weathering and biomass production. The sum of active temperature and precipitation evaporation ratio are critical parameters that determine energy consumption for soil formation, water balances in soil, organic-mineral interactions, and the transformation processes within the soil. However, human activities such as population growth, deforestation, disruption of marine ecosystems, and the greenhouse effect contribute to climate change, leading to denudation, depletion of soil organic matter, destruction of soil structure, erosion, and desertification, ultimately causing a decline in soil health and environmental degradation (IMD, 2021). Despite being a gradual process, climate change, characterized by small, long-term changes in temperature and precipitation, significantly influences various soil processes, particularly those related to soil fertility. The anticipated effects of climate change on soils primarily involve alterations in soil moisture conditions, increased soil temperature, and elevated CO2 levels. Understanding the consequences of climate change on soil health is crucial, as it has far-reaching impacts on agriculture, biodiversity, carbon cycling, and ecosystem resilience in the face of an evolving climate (Nunez et al., 2019).

Introduction

Climate change has significant adverse implications on the physiological processes and metabolic machinery of plants, potentially affecting growth, development, and overall crop productivity. The rapid increase in global population exacerbates the threat to global food security, which is further impacted by changing climate conditions. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that between 1850 and 1900 and 2011 and 2020, the global mean land surface air temperature increased by 1.6 °C. Predictions by the United Nations indicate that the global human population could reach 8.5 billion by 2023 and 9.7 billion by 2050, up from the current 8 billion. The National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) reported that 2022 was 0.86°C warmer than the average of the 20th century, making it the 6th warmest year on record. These data suggest an increased probability of unpredictable climate changes and harsh growing conditions, manifesting as various abiotic stresses on major cultivable lands. Climate change impacts CO2 concentration, temperature, precipitation, pollutants, and nutrient availability and uptake, leading to drought, salinity, irregular rainfall, f looding, high temperatures, and nutrient deficiencies in staple food crops, thereby threatening global food security. This review focuses on the effect of elevated CO2 and temperature on fundamental plant metabolic processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, transpiration, and nitrogen metabolism.

Introduction

The world’s food and nutritional security are under serious threat from climate change. Climate changes have significant effects on agriculture by affecting insect pests, their natural enemies, and pollinators as illustrated in Fig 1 (Eigenbrode and Adhikari, 2023). According to Benedict (2003), 13.6% of annual crop loss worldwide is attributed to insect pest attack. Crops, crop pests, natural enemies and pollinators are directly and indirectly impacted by erratic climate. The continuous and anticipated alterations in these insects vary across species, systems, and geographical areas, impeding the development of strong generalizations and forecasts. Moreover, the implementation of “climate-smart” agricultural methods, may have additional effects on ideal management of these insects.

Direct effects on insect pests

Temperature: The most reliable, well-researched, and easily modelled component of climate change is warming. Warming affects physiology, phenology, dispersal, reproduction, development, and survival of insect pests (Bale et al., 2002) as illustrated in Fig 2 (Skendži? et al., 2021). It can be inferred that increased herbivory would be associated with rising temperatures in many cases. High temperature and high humidity are key reasons for whitefly population increase (Pathania et al., 2020). Warming can alter the number of insect generations in Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in China (Huang and Hao, 2020).

The “plant disease triangle” is a fundamental concept in plant pathology that illustrates the interaction between three essential components necessary for the development of a plant disease. Firstly, the host plant which refers to the plant species or cultivar that is susceptible to the pathogen. Host plants provide the necessary environment and resources for the pathogen to establish, grow, and reproduce. Secondly, the pathogen which is any organism (such as fungi, bacteria, viruses, nematodes, or other microorganisms) that can cause disease in plants. Pathogens can infect host plants through various means, including direct contact, airborne spores, soil-borne organisms, or vectors such as insects. And thirdly, the environment which encompasses all external factors that influence the interaction between the host plant and the pathogen. This includes abiotic factors such as temperature, humidity, soil moisture, light, and nutrient availability, as well as biotic factors such as the presence of other organisms (competitors, predators, symbionts) that may affect disease development.

The plant disease triangle illustrates that the occurrence of a disease requires the presence and interaction of all three components: a susceptible host, a virulent pathogen, and a conducive environment. If any of these components is missing or unfavourable, disease development may be inhibited or prevented. Any change in ecosystem can affect plant diseases, because plant disease is the result of interaction between a susceptible host, virulent pathogen and favourable environment. If any of the three factors are altered, the progress of any one disease can change. Although interactions among the three factors must be matched, weather is an important variable due to its dynamic behaviour.

Rising temperature, decreasing precipitation, increased frequency in drought and flooding, etc. is making us realize climate change is not some cooked up story. Still there are people who believes climate change is not real. By definition, Climate change is a long-term shift in global or regional climate patterns. This will affect the life of people in many forms: health, food, water, etc. (Table 1). Agriculture is a highly vulnerable field to such weather and climate changes, they can have significant direct and indirect impacts on farm productivity and profitability. Climate change will have adverse effect on crop physiology, growth and chemistry and thus it will cause negative impact on agricultural production. Because of the variation in climate, moisture availability may change, which limits vegetation activity/plant growth, increase in drought/ heat/flooding will the crop growth and yield. Elevated CO2 does not have a profound effect on C4 plants. On the contrary, tissue nitrogen concentrations are higher for C3 species under increased CO2 . Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that climate change and elevated CO2 is expected to increase competitiveness of invasive weed. IPCC also estimates that with 1°C rise in global temperature, 5 to 10 per cent yield reduction of major food and cash crops (Pachauri et al., 2014).

Global temperature is rising due to greenhouse gas emissions from the usage of fossil fuels, this result in widespread agricultural and fisheries failure, the extinction of hundreds of thousands of species, and whole towns becoming uninhabitable (Lindwall, 2022). Rising global temperatures are severely killing humans and trees, forcing half of all species to move, worsening water-borne and respiratory ailments in people, and jeopardising millions’ food and water security (Isaacs-Thomas, 2022). Addressing these concerns necessitates a worldwide collaboration to minimise greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable behaviours. Climate change affects agriculture production, lowers crop nutritional value, and increases the frequency of extreme weather events. These interruptions jeopardise food production, availability, and access, especially in vulnerable countries. Microbes play an important role in soil health, nitrogen cycling, and ecosystem stability. They impact a variety of soil activities, such as organic matter breakdown, nutrient mobilisation, and plant growth stimulation. However, climate change poses a substantial danger to microbial communities, possibly changing their activities and altering ecosystem dynamics (Wang et al., 2022). Transitioning to a low-carbon economy requires a global effort. Mitigation strategies include enhancing energy efficiency, adopting renewable energy sources, electrifying industrial processes, implementing efficient transportation systems, and introducing carbon taxes or emissions markets.

Climate change is widely acknowledged as the most significant contemporary challenge facing humanity. According to a recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2022), the situation has deteriorated further, with 3.3 billion people worldwide highly susceptible to climate change. Current unsustainable development practices are escalating the exposure of ecosystems and populations to climate-related risks. Human activities and their impact on the climate and environment are leading to unprecedented extinctions of animals and plants, resulting in a loss of biodiversity and posing a threat to life on Earth. The diversity of microorganisms is fundamental to maintaining a healthy global ecosystem, as the microbial world serves as the life support system of the biosphere. Although the influence of human activities on microorganisms is less conspicuous and less well understood, a significant concern is that changes in microbial biodiversity and functions will impact the resilience of other organisms, affecting their ability to adapt to climate change. Microorganisms play crucial roles in carbon and nutrient cycling, as well as in the health of animals (including humans), plants, agriculture, and the global food web. Microorganisms inhabit all environments on Earth occupied by larger organisms and are the exclusive life forms in certain environments such as the deep subsurface and extreme habitats. Dating back to the origin of life on Earth at least 3.8 billion years ago, microorganisms are likely to persist well beyond any future extinction events. Despite their vital role in regulating climate change, microorganisms are seldom the focal point of climate change studies and are typically overlooked in policy development. The challenge lies in understanding their intricate role in the ecosystem due to their vast diversity and varied responses to environmental changes.
