Introduction

Agriculture has historically been the primary source of income in India. It has the potential to alleviate poverty, increase income, and enhances food security for 80% of both the world’s poor and people who reside in rural areas primarily work in agriculture. One of the most effective strategies to eradicate extreme poverty, increase shared prosperity, and feed an estimated 9.7 billion people by 2050 is agricultural development. Compared to other modes, the agro - based sector’s progress is two to four times more successful in enhancing the earnings of the poorest people (www.worldbank.org).

Nearly 5 billion hectares, or 38% of the world’s land surface, is used for agriculture. Around one of this is devoted for farming, and the remaining two thirds are pastures and meadows for grazing animals. Over 10% of cropland is assigned to permanent crops like cocoa plantations, oil palm plantations, and fruit tree orchards. Yet another 21% of land is primed for irrigation, a crucial agricultural land management technique.

Introduction

India has one of the world’s largest agricultural production areas of land. The net sown area is 140.1 million hectares, the net irrigated area is 49% of this, which is 68.4 million ha as per 2014–15 land-use statistics (Agriculture Research Data Book 2019). While the proportion of Indians employed in agriculture is decreasing, agriculture, along with its allied sectors such as livestock, forestry and fisheries, remains India’s primary source of income. As per the Lok Sabha Standing Committee on Agriculture (2019–20), agriculture and allied industries employed 54.6 percent of India’s total workforce. Approximately 70% of rural households still rely primarily on agriculture for a living. Agriculture and allied sectors’ share of the country’s Gross Value Added (the value of goods and services produced in an area, industry, or sector of an economy) has fallen from 18.2 percent in 2014-15 to 16.5 percent in 2019-20. As per current trends, 60% of India’s population (more than 10% of the world’s population) will face severe food shortages by 2050.

The Government of India, during 1980s, recognized the necessity to improve the latex yield productivity in the traditional rubber growing regions and also expand these plantations to non-traditional regions to meet the ever increasing demands of natural rubber in India (Sethuraj et al., 1989). Agrometeorological studies were initiated during early 1986 with the appointment of a Scientist (Agrometeorology). To begin with, scientific issues were identified as: (a) delineate the potential non-traditional regions for expansion of rubberplantations, (b) estimate the impact of climatic conditions, especially abiotic  stress conditions on productivity, (c) quantify influence of meteorological factors on the physiological responses towards plant growth and yield attributes, (d) estimate the irrigation requirements to mitigate the drought conditions, and (e) develop weather based predictive models for `Abnormal leaf fall’ disease of rubber plantations. An attempt is made to present synthesis of accomplishments during 1986 to 1992 period of my association with the Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII), Kottayam.

In the preceding chapters, we embarked on a comprehensive journey through the realm of vegetables, covering a wide range of species that belong to different botanical and culinary groups. These chapters provided an indepth exploration of the characteristics, growth habits, and environmental requirements of various vegetables, as well as the effects of weather conditions on their productivity.
However, the diversity of vegetables is vast, and there are several other important species that were not covered in the earlier chapters. These vegetables may be regionally specific, possess unique characteristics, or have distinct environmental requirements. Despite their importance, they have remained outside the scope of our previous discussions.
This chapter aims to fill this knowledge gap by providing an overview of these additional vegetables, with a focus on understanding the impact of weather conditions on their growth, development, and productivity. By examining the effects of temperature, moisture, light, and other environmental factors on these vegetables, we can gain valuable insights into their cultivation requirements and optimize their production.
Through this chapter, we hope to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the vegetable kingdom, highlighting the diversity of species, their environmental requirements, and the strategies for maximizing their yields. By expanding our knowledge of these lesser-covered vegetables, we can promote their cultivation, conservation, and sustainable use, ultimately contributing to global food security and nutrition.

Forests are valuable renewable resources for humanity on Earth. The country’s forest cover has been estimated to comprise 19.39% of its entire geographical area. Forests consist primarily of trees that offer wood that can be transformed into solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels. Forests play a crucial role in regulating the Earth’s temperature by serving as carbon dioxide filters. They provide habitats and shelters for numerous species and also contribute to the visual beauty of the environment. Forests supply the necessary resources for a range of wood related industries, including pulp and paper, composite wood, rayon and other synthetic fibers, sporting goods, furniture, boat
construction, and matches. Timber plays a crucial role in the construction of buildings.Various products, such as bamboos, resins, gums, oils, fibers, medicines, katha, lac, shellac, etc., are derived from forests.
The country’s forest cover has been calculated to be 637,293 square kilometers, accounting for 19.39% of the country’s total geographic area. This falls short of the stipulated requirement, which is 30% of the entire land area. The geographic region is comprised of 11.48% dense forest, 7.76% open forest, and 0.15% mangrove. World Forest Day is observed on March 21st, while National Forest Day is celebrated on September 11th.

Introduction
The sun is the primary source of energy for all life on Earth. The primary energy source for the majority of ecosystems is limited to this one. Photosynthesis is performed by green plants, certain types of algae, and microorganisms. They utilize solar energy to fuel chemical reactions that combine basic inorganic components to create intricate organic chemicals. Elements undergo a cyclical process as they move through the different compartments of an ecosystem.
Photosynthesis is the process by which solar energy is captured and transformed into food in the form of chemical energy. Food comprises fundamental elements such as carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and other necessary elements, along with stored energy. The components present in the food undergo recycling. The flow of energy and nutrients begins with the producers, then moves to the consumers, and ultimately returns to the producers through the activity of decomposers. Energy, in contrast to materials, is not subject to recycling. Food traverses the food web, resulting in energy dissipation. Typically, just a mere 10% of the energy accumulated in a certain trophic
level, such as the producers, is effectively passed on to the subsequent trophic level, such as the herbivores. This is referred to as the energy pyramid. Ultimately, the energy available in the trophic level becomes so depleted that it cannot sustain any higher trophic levels. Consequently, the presence of fourth order consumers in any ecosystem is extremely rare.
The biotic component, often known as the life component of the environment, encompasses a diverse array of plants, animals, and bacteria, which form interconnected communities.

Introduction
In the global perspective, water contamination is a significant issue. Every day, it is the cause of almost 14,000 deaths. The most valuable natural resource on Earth is water, which makes up more than 70% of its surface.
Definitions
• The term “water pollution” refers to the contamination of water bodies by human activity, which can be detrimental to the plants and organisms that call thesem bodies of water home. It can be characterized as any alteration in the quality of water brought about by human activity that makes it less suitable for any of its positive uses, actual or potential. Excess of any substance or heat that could endanger people, animals, or aquatic lifeMan’s actions alter the quality or composition of water, either directly or indirectly, making it unfit for any purpose.
Sources of Water Pollution
• Point source pollution, which is defined as pollution having a distinct source and point of entry into the water, making it easy to identify. It describes impurities that find their way into a waterway by a covert channel, like a ditch or pipe. For instance, contaminants include metals and organics in municipal and industrial discharge pipelines.

Introduction
Historian “Donald Worster” tells us that fertilizers are not a replacement for rich soil. The soil is a resource for which there is no substitute. Time and climate have an impact on how soils develop as well. In humid and warm climates, soils develop more
quickly than in excessively dry or cold regions. In 15 years, under perfect temperature circumstances, soft parent material may develop into 1 centimeter of soil. It could take hundreds of years for a hard parent material to turn into soil in unfavorable climate conditions.
Definition
The land’s thin layer of soil is made up of a combination of minerals, organic matter, living things, air, and water that work together to support the growth of plants. The source material’s transformation into soil was influenced by a number of elements.
The accumulation of persistent poisonous compounds, chemicals, salts, radioactive elements, or disease-causing agents in soil that negatively impacts plant growth and animal health is known as soil pollution.

Introduction
The term “noise” originates from the Latin word “nausia.” There are negative repercussions of noise pollution on our bodies and minds. In general, the amount of noise and the length of exposure determine how much noise pollution there is. These
days, noise is a constant in our lives due to the advancements in industry, technology, and machinery.
Definition
Unwanted sound released into the atmosphere that poses a health risk is referred to as noise pollution.
The term “unwanted or unpleasant sound that causes discomfort” refers to nose pollution.
Another definition of noise pollution is “wrong sound, in wrong place at wrong time.”
Distinction Between Noise Pollution and Sound Pollution:
Sound is defined as the lowest level of 50 dB that is pleasant to listen to. Noise pollution is defined as any sound that is louder than 95 dB and bothersome to listen to.
Sources of Noise Pollution
1. Factories and industries, community and religious activities, and modes of transportation (air, train, and road) are the primary sources of noise pollution.
2. In metropolitan regions, automobiles, factories, industries, railroads, and airplanes are the main man-made sources.

Human activity on the environment is the root cause of many environmental issues. The standard of the environment we live in must be each of our own concerns. The quality of our surroundings can be enhanced or degraded by our individual actions. As a result, people must feel obligated to preserve the environment by leading ethical and ecologically conscious lives.
Conservation
best possible use of human, environmental, and cultural resources in national development programs. The Latin terms “servare” (keep watch) and “con” (together) denote this.

Introduction
A natural disaster refers to a significant and harmful occurrence caused by the Earth’s natural processes. Examples of natural disasters include floods, storms, tornadoes, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, and other geologic phenomena. A natural calamity can result in fatalities or destruction of property, and usually leads to economic harm, the extent of which is determined by the afflicted population’sability to bounce back and the availability of infrastructure.
Categories of Natural Disasters/ Catastrophes
Floods
A flood is the result of water overflowing and covering land. According to the EU Floods Directive, a flood is defined as the temporary  inundation of territory that istypically not submerged in water. Flooding can occur when the amount of water in ariver or lake exceeds its  capacity, causing the water to overflow and breach its normal borders. The size of a lake or other body of water may alter due to seasonal variations in precipitation and snow melt. However, it is not considered a substantial flood unlessthe water submerges land that is utilized by humans, such as villages, cities, populated areas, highways, and farms.

Introduction
The rapid advancement of information technology in recent years has led to an explosion in the awareness of environmental concerns and issues pertaining to human health. UNEP created UNEP net, the green global Internet, as well as the satellite communication system.
Information technology is necessary for environmental management.
The general population, especially in developing nations, and decision- and policymakers still have limited or no access to this information in a readily comprehensible format. Politicians and the general public have not yet been able to personally experience the effects of ozone layer depletion, climate change, or biodiversity loss. These are all new challenges, and scientists strongly advise taking more immediate action than legislators are able to. Thus, it is more crucial than ever to close the knowledge gap between scientists and decision-makers in order to formulate environmental policy.
UNEP created the Global Resource Information Database in 1985 in an effort to close this information gap and give the world’s population access to current, trustworthy environmental data. Telecommunications and geographic information technology were used as strategic tools to do this, with the former being used for information exchange and analysis and the latter for information distribution.

Objective
To determine the chemical composition of biomass in terms of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and silica content using standard detergent fiber analysis and acid digestion techniques.
Principle
Chemical analysis of biomass helps in evaluating its structural and compositional characteristics, which influence its thermal behavior, degradation properties, and suitability for bioenergy applications. Biomass primarily consists of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and pentosans, each playing a distinct role in the structure and energy potential of plant material:
Cellulose – A linear polymer of ß-D-glucose units linked by ß-(1?4) glycosidic bonds. It provides tensile strength and rigidity to plant cell walls and serves as the main carbohydrate source in biomass.
Hemicellulose – A heterogeneous branched polymer composed of pentoses (xylose, arabinose) and hexoses (mannose, glucose, galactose). It acts as a matrix surrounding cellulose microfibrils, providing flexibility and binding lignin and cellulose together.
Lignin – A complex three-dimensional polymer made up of phenylpropane units. It is highly resistant to microbial degradation, provides compressive strength, and acts as a natural binder in plant tissues.
Pentosans – Polymers of five-carbon sugars that contribute to carbohydrate storage and structural integrity.

Biomass briquetting is the process of compressing loose and low-density biomass materials such as sawdust, agricultural residues, and forest waste into high-density, solid fuel blocks called briquettes. The process involves mechanical compression under high pressure using machines like piston presses, screw extruders, or hydraulic presses, depending on the technology used.
The main purpose of briquetting is to increase the density of biomass to improve its combustion properties, handling, transportation, and storage efficiency. In most modern systems, briquetting is done without the use of binders, as natural lignin present in the biomass acts as a binding agent under pressure and heat.
Importance of Biomass Briquetting
Biomass briquetting holds immense environmental, economic, and social importance.
1. Environmental Protection
• Briquetting reduces deforestation by providing an alternative to firewood and charcoal.
• It minimizes air pollution by producing cleaner-burning fuel with lower particulate emissions and sulfur content.
• The process helps in carbon sequestration by ensuring the
sustainable use of biomass.
2. Waste Management
• Agricultural residues like rice husk, sugarcane bagasse, cotton stalks, and sawdust, which otherwise cause disposal problems, are effectively utilized.

Aquaculture is practiced in the majority of countries worldwide, however the significance of water quality standards remains largely unknown to farmers and new aqua entrepreneurs. They may achieve maximum fish production with minimal input costs if they are trained and stay up to date on water quality management in the aquatic ecosystem. The water quality categorised into three main of metrics as physical, chemical, and biological parameters. Dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), free carbon dioxide (CO2), pH, temperature, total dissolved solids (TDS), turbidity, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, alkalinity, bacterial density primary productivity (chl a), plankton population, etc. play a significant role for fish production. However, even small variations in certain physical and chemical parameters—particularly pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen (DO)—can cause stress in the animals, which may manifest as physiological changes, reduced reproductive capability, and altered behavior. Water parameters such as alkalinity and hardness are relatively stable, whereas others like pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and temperature fluctuate regularly. Proper maintenance and monitoring of these water quality parameters in aquatic environments support fish health and enhance fish production. On the other hand, variability in dissolved ammonia, nitrites, and nutrients like nitrate significantly affects aquaculture production. It has also been observed that high feeding rates in aquafarms create eutrophic conditions in water bodies, leading to substantial algal blooms. These blooms are responsible for die-offs, and as a result, ammonia levels in the ponds rise rapidly. The environmental factors responsible for generating high ammoniacal concentrations may also lead to increased nitrite concentration in aquafarm. Both ammonia and nitrite are directly toxic or sublethal cultured aqua animals, leading to reduced resistance to diseases. In aquaculture system, ammonia is produced through the ammonification process, which occurs when organic matter is broken down by the microbial community. However, this decomposition also reduces dissolved oxygen levels in the system. Low dissolved oxygen surges the toxicity of ammonia to cultured animals. Ionized ammonia (NH4 +) and hydroxide ions occurs in equilibrium with unionized aqueous ammonia solution. The unionized form of ammonia (NH3) is toxic

Water is the most important natural resource that governs and exercises control on living organisms on earth besides supporting all human activities. The demand for water is almost increasing at exponential rate due to increase in population and industrialization. All sectors of agriculture including crop production, horticulture, animal husbandry, poultry and fi sheries primarily depend upon water. Water scarcity can cause all kinds of miseries. The water exists in all 3 different forms on earth. It exists as snow or ice in glaciers and ice caps, liquid water in rivers, lakes, streams, tanks, ponds and as groundwater storage. The water exists in all three different forms in the atmosphere. The clouds may contain fi ne ice particles, tiny water droplets and as well as water vapour. The air in atmosphere also contains water vapour. It is estimated that 97% of water is salt water and remaining 3% of water is pure and fresh water. Approximately two-thirds of the fresh water is trapped in glaciers and ice caps. Most of the fresh water (30%) exists as groundwater. About 0.7% of fresh water exists as soil water and 0.3% a fresh water accounts for surface water resources and water present in the atmosphere as water vapour, water drops and ice particles. The circulation of water between oceans, earth and atmosphere forms hydrologic cycle.
2.1. Hydrological Cycle
The hydrological cycle explains the continuous recirculation and transport of water between the atmosphere, oceans and earth. It is a very complex system that has many sub cycles associated with it. For example, the water from earth surface, oceans and water bodies get evaporated due to heat energy received from the sun in the form of incident solar radiation (Fig.2.1).

Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time, with far-reaching consequences for the environment, human health, and the economy. One of the most significant impacts of climate change is on the world’s water resources. Rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, and increased frequency of extreme weather events are all taking a toll on the availability, quality, and management of water resources. Water is essential for human survival, and its availability and quality are crucial for human health, food security, and economic development. However, climate change is altering the hydrological cycle, leading to changes in precipitation patterns, increased evaporation, and altered water flows. These changes have significant implications on demand for water resources, including reduced water availability, decreased water quality, and increased risk of waterrelated disasters which will ultimately impact agricultural production and food security.
15.1. Changes in Precipitation Patterns
One of the most significant impacts of climate change on water resources is the alteration of precipitation patterns and projected per cent changes in average annual precipitation over 1850-1900 period at 2.00C increase in temperature are depicted here (Fig.15.1).

R has become the world-wide language for statistics, predictive analytics, and data visualization. R is not limited to statistics; it provides a wide range of tools for spectroscopy. It offers a wide range of methodologies for spectral data preprocessing, spectral analysis, multivariate analysis of the spectral data, machine leraning models for prediction of properties, and visualization. As an open source project, it’s freely available for a range of platforms, including Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. An integrated development environment (IDE) for R, R Studio, allows interactive execution of R functions with user interface. RStudio is available in two formats - RStudio Desktop and RStudio Server - both available in free and fee-based (commercial) editions.
1.1. Download and Install R
The R software setup files can be downloaded from any of the widely distributed Comprehensive R Archive Network (CARN). To download R, go to url: https:// www.r-project.org/ and choose your preferred CRAN mirror, a location close to you and follow the steps to download and installation of R and Rtools.
1.2. Download and Install R Studio
Download and Install the R Studio once the base R is installed. Go to https://www. rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/ and click on download R Studio Desktop with Open Source license.
1.3. Updating R
To update the R, we need the package “installr” and use function “updateR( )”

Agriculture is number one priority in economic planning and for the welfare of the people. It is most indispensable sector. Severe food shortages due to short comings and mismanagement of agriculture will have long lasting effect. In recent years, the uncertainties in agriculture are increasing due to climate change and farmers are required to be very vigilant and cautions right from planning of field operations till they recover their investment and end up with better returns. The governments all over the world are very much cautious of the problems of the farmers. There is greater realization that strengthening meteorological services to generate accurate and timely weather forecasts is the starting point to help farmers in carrying out appropriate management practices to ensure better crop production and minimise the risks associated with unfavourable weather situations. The farmers can manage to take their own decisions with regard to choice of crops, land preparation, fertilizer applications, weed control, irrigation scheduling etc which are of routine nature (Fig.19.1). But there are several issues for which farmers do not have adequate knowledge just based on weather forecast. It is now very much realised all over the world that there is need to transform the weather forecasts into an actionable operational agrometeorological advisories based on sound scientific hypothesis and authentic database. Though it appears to be very simple and easy solution, the agencies that

In cropped soils, evaporation refers to evaporation of water from the soil and transpiration refers to evaporation of water from plant canopies (Fig.6.1). Evaporation and transpiration play very significant role in mass and energy transfer. The latent heat of vaporization is defined as amount of heat required to evaporate 1 gm of water at a temperature of 100°C; i.e. the boiling point of water is 540 cal/gm. The amount of heat required for evaporation of water at ordinary temperature of about say 30°C is 610 cal/gm.

The evapotranspiration from crop depends upon several factors as indicated below:
• The evapotranspiration increases with increase in air temperature.
• The evapotranspiration increases with increase in wind speed up to a certain limit.

Rapeseed
Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.), a member of the Brassicaceae family, is one of the primary oilseed crops cultivated for biodiesel production, particularly in Europe and Canada (Hoekman et al., 2012; Demirbas, 2009). Its seeds contain 40-45% oil, making it one of the most efficient oil crops for biofuel production (Ramos et al., 2009). The extracted oil is known as canola oil, which is preferred for both food and fuel applications due to its low erucic acid and glucosinolate content (Atabani et al., 2012). Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.), is one of the biofuel species that has achieved global attention, primarily due to its high yield, climatic versatility as well as its low environmental impact than fossil fuels (Singh et al., 2010). The crop is being grown all over the temperate region because its ability to resist cold temperatures and pests is a major advantage for the practice of sustainable agriculture. Moreover, the rapeseed has been positively affected by the development of biotechnology and the utilization of hybrid breeding that has been significantly increasing the oil yield and disease resistance of rapeseed, thus, facilitating the biodiesel production from this plant (Zanetti et al., 2013). Biodiesel from rapeseed has ecological advantages, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 50% compared to regular diesel (Hill et al., 2006). It also supports rural economic development through the diversification of farmer income and diminishing reliance on imported petroleum (FAO, 2021). The increasing price of the biofuel, chiefly supported by sustainable energy policies and reducing carbon footprint policies, is one of the driving factors for increasing demand of rapeseed as global demand for renewable energy sources rises (Euopean Commission 2021).
Sunflower
Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is an important oilseed crop used for biodiesel production, especially in temperate regions like Europe and North America (Demirbas, 2009). The oil content of sunflower seeds ranges from 25-50%, making it a suitable feedstock for biofuel (Atabani et al., 2012). The characteristics of sunflower oil, such as the high content of unsaturated fatty acids, lead to better cold flow properties of its biodiesel (Ramos et al., 2009). In addition, the creation of high-oleic sunflower varieties allowed considerable improvement in oxidative stability and led to the fact that sunflower biodiesel is more suitable for storage and combustion (Dimitrijevic et al., 2017). A second

In the past, literacy in reading, writing and mathematics was considered the basis of establishment in society. With this knowledge, anyone could run all the businesses of his professional life efficiently because no technical skills other than typewriter and general computer knowledge were required. In present set up, this general knowledge is no longer enough to perform any task smoothly today. In this age of science and technology, the old concept of literacy is no longer applicable. Three other types of literacy or skills have now been added to the past concept of literacy: information literacy, technological literacy and human literacy. In this age of technology, people cannot keep themselves functional in this digitized world by practical knowledge of analog equipment alone. In present days, people live and work on the constant flow of big data, connections, and instant information flowing from every click and touch of a device. Technology is not static. Evernew technological advancement brings tides of data before people, therefore, they need data literacy to read, analyze and use them. Technological literacy gives them grounding in coding and engineering principles, so they know how their machines tick. Ultimately, human literacy teaches them the humanities, communication and design, allowing them to work in human environments. Artificial intelligence (AI) is now a fact of everyday life in our modern hightech societies. There are many definitions of AI and each of those definitions has been revised over time. Presently, most definitions state that AI solves complex cognitive problems associated with human intelligence or that AI helps as many people as possible through smartphones or healthcare, or even that AI recognizes problems and creates solutions for the benefit of technology, people, and society. However, the core concept of AI has continuously been to create machines that were capable of thinking like humans. It took about 200,000 years for human intelligence to evolve from natural to artificial and only 10 years to cut ties with the Earth and move to the clouds. During the creation of AI, mankind learned a lot about what it means to be human, how human intelligence is structured, and how humans learn and acquire expertise. With more predictive power, more efficiency and the ability to deliver better results than humans, AI is rapidly moving aside from humans into the world of expertise. However, it is impossible to imagine that someone else will replace Homo sapiens at this moment, but its probability cannot be ruled out in the days to come. The day, when mankind, in the course of time, will immerse in the world of knowledge, robotics becomes an essential part of the human body and existence, the existence of mankind is sure to be threatened. In October 2017, Saudi Arabia granted citizenship to humanoid Sofia. Perhaps this is a new breed of human being brought about by technology in the 21st century. Just as the message of the first driverless car aroused a lot of curiosity among mankind and now that curiosity has disappeared completely, it is likely that the arrival of many Sophia’s will make the environment very normal in the coming days. So here comes AI – Artificial Intelligence, the driving force behind Sophia or Driverless cars. The very simple definition of artificial intelligence is -the intelligence displayed by machines. Today, in this age of science and technology, we can say that anything imaginable by humans can be done with the help of machines. Sundar Pichai, CEO Google and Alphabet in his article “The promise of AI for India and the World” opined that every technology shift is an opportunity to advance scientific discovery, accelerate human progress and improve lives. AI will do this on an unprecedented scale and India is uniquely positioned to play a leading role.

In order to ensure that future generations can prosper, sustainable development is an all-encompassing strategy that aims to strike a balance between social equity, environmental protection, and economic growth. The inclusion of genderresponsive policies is one of this agenda’s most important but often ignored components. Encouraging inclusive and sustainable development outcomes requires acknowledging and addressing the unique needs and contributions of different genders. Empowering women and other marginalized genders have positive effects on resilience, economic productivity, and environmental stewardship that go beyond local communities. Policies that are gender responsive aim to address systemic disparities by advancing equal opportunities and involvement in decision-making. These policies seek to empower marginalized groups while also utilizing their distinct viewpoints and skills to tackle urgent global issues. Women are important in agriculture and natural resource management, for example, so their input is essential in developing environmental policies that work. Gender considerations can be effectively integrated into development frameworks to produce more comprehensive solutions that lead to sustainable outcomes. In addition, promoting gender parity is not just a question of justice but also a critical component of sustainable development. Greater gender parity is associated with faster economic growth and better social outcomes in nations, according to a wealth of research. Entire communities gain when women have access to economic opportunities, healthcare, and education. In order to achieve sustainable development goals and make sure that no one is left behind, creating gender-responsive policies is therefore not just an ethical duty but also a practical necessity. The Asia-Pacific region is highly vulnerable to climate change, with impacts such as more frequent natural disasters, sea-level rise, floods, droughts, and changing weather patterns. Rural areas, particularly those reliant on agriculture, are disproportionately and non-identically affected. The Asia-Pacific region, home to over 60% of the world's population, is among the most vulnerable to climate change due to its diverse geography, dense coastal populations, and socioeconomic disparities [IPCC, 2022a], Climate change is an emerging threat that affects all countries to varying degrees. The recently released IPCC Assessment Report identified agriculture as one of the critical sectors both susceptible to climate change and contributing to it through Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. Countries in the Asia-Pacific region are investing significant resources to strengthen agriculture on various fronts. These investments focus on the research and development of new varieties and agro-technologies to adapt agriculture to emerging climatic threats and, simultaneously, mitigate GHG emissions from the agricultural and allied sectors. Understanding the classification of crop diseases is crucial for farmers, agricultural professionals, and researchers, as it enables them to identify diseases accurately, select appropriate management strategies, and develop new control methods. One of the primary ways to classify crop diseases is by their causes, which can be broadly categorized into infectious and non-infectious diseases. Infectious diseases are caused by living organisms, such as fungi, bacteria, viruses, and nematodes, while non-infectious diseases are caused by environmental factors, such as temperature, moisture, nutrient deficiencies and some substances toxic to plants. Another way to classify crop diseases is by their symptoms, which can include visible changes in plant growth, color, or texture, as well as reductions in yield or quality. Symptoms can be categorized into different types, such as leaf spots, blights, wilts, and tumors, each of which is associated with specific diseasecausing agents. Classification of crop diseases can also be based on the host plant, with diseases being grouped according to the specific crop or plant species they affect. This type of classification is useful for developing crop-specific disease management strategies. In this chapter, we will explore the different classification systems used for crop diseases, including their causes, symptoms, hosts, and environmental factors. We will also discuss the importance of accurate disease classification for effective disease management and the development of new control methods. The broad classification of crop diseases followed uniformly throughout the world is based on the nature of the causal agent, and it categorizes diseases into two main groups: infectious diseases and non-infectious diseases.
5.1 Infectious diseases
These are caused by living organisms, such as fungi, bacteria, viruses, and nematodes, which can spread from plant to plant. These diseases can be further subdivided into several categories, including:

Fungal diseases are a significant threat to crop health and productivity worldwide, causing substantial economic losses and compromising food security. The development and spread of fungal diseases are influenced by a complex array of factors, including crop susceptibility, pathogen virulence, and environmental conditions. Among these environmental factors, weather plays a critical role in determining the severity and impact of fungal diseases on crops. Weather conditions, such as temperature, humidity, precipitation, and wind, can significantly affect the life cycle of fungal pathogens, including spore production, dispersal, and infection. For example, high temperatures and dry conditions can inhibit the growth and development of some fungal pathogens, while cool and wet conditions can favor their development and spread. Similarly, wind and precipitation can facilitate the dispersal of fungal spores, leading to the rapid spread of disease (Fig. 7.1). Understanding the impact of weather on fungal diseases is essential for developing effective disease management strategies. By recognizing the weather conditions that favor or inhibit the development of fungal diseases, farmers and crop managers can take proactive measures to prevent or mitigate disease outbreaks. This may involve adjusting planting dates, irrigation schedules, and fungicide applications to minimize the risk of disease. Furthermore, knowledge of the weather effects on fungal diseases can also inform the development of more accurate and reliable disease forecasting systems.

Bacterial diseases are a significant threat to human health, agriculture, and the environment. These diseases are caused by pathogenic bacteria that can infect various hosts, including humans, animals, and plants. The severity and spread of bacterial diseases are influenced by various factors, including weather parameters. Weather conditions, such as temperature, humidity, wind, and precipitation, play a crucial role in the development, dissemination, and survival of bacterial pathogens (Fig. 8.1). Fig. 8.1. High temperatures can accelerate the growth of some bacteria, while low temperatures can slow it down or even kill them, however every pathogenic bacterium have its own weather window. For example, a daytime temperature of 35°C and nighttime temperatures of 27°C are most favorable for Xanthomonas oryzae infecting rice. Similarly, humidity influences the survival and dissemination of bacteria, with high humidity favoring the growth and spread of many bacterial pathogens. For example, lower soil moisture decreases the chances of infection of Ralstonia solanacearum in tomato plants. Wind and precipitation also impact the spread of bacterial diseases. Wind can disperse bacterial spores and cells, allowing them to reach new areas and infect new hosts. India’s climate policy and its stand in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) have developed through a complex and contradictory interactions between global pressures to take actions in the field of climate change, India’s foreign policy orientation, its environmental practices and various other national factors. India has been under growing pressure from the major developed economies and also from many small developing countries to play a leading role in mitigating climate change in keeping with its economic and political importance. National factors, including the very important consideration of maintaining rapid GDP growth, favours a conservative approach, with emphasis on expanding India’s share of global climate space. India ranks high on global climate change vulnerability because of its 7,500 Kilometre-long coastline, high dependence of its agriculture on monsoon, decreasing availability of freshwater and over-exploitation of ground water resources, presence of large population in cyclone-prone areas, low lying river deltas and fragile ecosystems like partially submerged lands, and not least, because of melting of the Himalayan glaciers, which feed close to 70 percent of India’s river waters. In 2008, India formulated a National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) under international obligations. India’s climate policy has always been the preserve of a small group of individuals protected from societal influence and unaccountable to the public at large. Indian policy makers claim to speak on behalf of those very people who have been consciously excluded from democratic and participatory decision-making. The industrialised economies reluctant to own up to their climate obligation only breeds more cynicism within the Indian society. Whatever the outcome of international conventions on climate change or any kind of global negotiations in the immediate future, India cannot afford to give up on the serious issue of climate change.

Abstract

Conversion of an already arid land into a desert through indiscriminate human actions magnified by droughts. Such actions include overgrazing, repeated burning, intensive farming, and stripping of vegetation for firewood. One quarter of the earth’s surface is threatened by desertification - an area of over 3.6 billion hectares. Since 1990, Six million hectares of productive land are lost every year due to land degradation. Desertification threatens the liveihoods of more than one billion people and has already made over 135 million people homeless. Desertification does not occur in linear, easily mappable patterns. Deserts advance erratically, forming patches on their borders. Areas far from natural deserts can degrade quickly to barren soil, rock, or sand through poor land management.

Soil pollution happens when we destroy the thin layer of healthy and productive soil, which covers the earth’s surface. Most of the world’s food is produced using this resource and if we don’t protect it the world’s farmers will be unable to grow enough food to support the worlds people.
 
Healthy soil depends on bacteria, fungi, and small animals (such as worms) to break down wastes in the soil and release its nutrients which help plants grow. The over use of fertilizers and pesticides can limit the ability of soil organisms to process wastes, which in turn makes the soil less productive or in the worst case scenario useless or even poisonous. 

Introduction

Impact Assessment can be broadly defined as the prediction or estimation of the consequences of a current or proposed action (project, policy, technology). Emergence of EIA can be related to National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969 in the USA. This act is now considered as model legislation for implementation all over the world. Today we have more than 100 countries that have adopted EIA legislation. EIA requirements of aid agencies and funding agencies are typically based on the principles included in the NEPA. In any project planning, along with the traditional technical (engineering) and economic considerations the NEPA requires environmental impact considerations. Environmental impact statements (EISs) are prepared as action forcing mechanism in NEPA that describe the environmental consequences of major actions which significantly affect the quality of human environment. Thus, the primary purpose of EIA is to encourage the environmental considerations in planning and decision making process. Finally, it is expected to arrive at actions which are more environmentally compatible.

Introduction

The state of Maharashtra now again reels under the scarcity of water. Geologically, major part of the state is covered by Deccan basaltic flows. This basaltic terrain, as such, has been labelled notorious as far as the availability of groundwater is concerned. Uncertain availability of groundwater in the terrain is due to heterogeneity in the nature of piles of basaltic flows which adversely affects the geohydrological characters of the rocks.

The area understudy is unfortunately, a part of basaltic terrain in which no storage structures like major dams or medium projects have been constructed across the existing rivers. Consequently, the irrigation in the area and domestic needs of the people solely depend on whatever water is available in the existing dug wells. The wells do not suffice the need of the people because the percolation of water in the wells is not adequate in major part.

INTRODUCTION

The agriculture in north eastern hill region of India is mainly rainfed in nature and shifting cultivation, known as jhuming, is the dominant farming system. The shifting cultivation is detrimental to both soil and vegetation as it is connected to heavy soil and nutrient losses when practised in steep slopes. The burning and slashing operations are responsible for reduced floral and faunal diversity in the region. It is a well known fact that climate is the main driving factor that governs the sustainability of other natural resources such as land, water and vegetation. So far the NE region gets abundant rainfall for survival of the crops at least during the kharif season. The rainfall starts early March and continues up to the late October. The jhum cultivators follow the rainfall trend and get their field ready for sowing of seeds by early March itself so that vegetative stage of crops gets plenty of rainwater for growth and development. Due to increased population pressure, the hills of NE region are over exploited and the jhum cycle has been reduced from 10-12 years to 4-5 years now-adays. Hence the soils do not get sufficient time to revitalize it and are subjected to more and more exploitation and get degraded permanently.

Abstract

The frequently recurring earth tremors / Seismicities in parts of Tamil Nadu & Kerala and the earthquakes of higher magnitude in Central India in the recent years have gradually dissolved the concept of shield area stability for the South India and the concept of mid-plate seismicity has emerged in the minds of geoscientists, Hence, the geoscientists have embarked into a number of studies to bringout seismotectonic maps for South India. In this context, a detailed studies have been carried out by the authors in parts of westernghats (Kodaikkanal and Varushanad hills) in Tamil Nadu. In the said study lineaments were interpreted using high resolution IRS satellite data and from the lineament pattern, isofracture, lineament density and lineament interaction intensity the strain maxima axes were drawn. Such strain maximas were observed to fall in N- S, E – W and NE –SW directions. These strain maximas were found to coincide with various drainage anomalies, like radial, compressed meandering and eyed drainages indicating that these lineaments are prone for seismicity/ earth tremors.

Abstract

The coastal regions are always tectonically active since these form the junction between the continental and oceanic plates. These tectonic activities and the resultantly tutored fluvial and marine geomorphic processes and the independent fluvial and marine geomorphic processes carve out the coastal morphology. And if these coastal geomorphic features are studied, it will lead to the understanding of the morphotechtonics. One such a study carried out for a part of Ganjam coast, revealed various geomorphic anomalies viz: presence of high order hill ranges only in the north eastern and south western parts of the area with the central plain, northerly migrating Ganjam river, development of wide beach ridges only along the central plain, all indicating the Late Quaternary upliftment of the central plain.

Introduction

The Indian subcontinent is vested with nearly 9,000km long coastline both in its eastern and the western continental margins. These coasts provide unique configuration with convexities (land protruding into the coast), concavities (vice-versa), deltas of different morphologies, beach ridges and swales, bay mouth bars, peaks, serrations and projections in the shorelines, all indicating the vibrant tectonic, fluvial, marine and aeolian processes. As the coastal zones in general, form the boundaries between the continental and oceanic plate margins, these are inherent weak zones prone to tectonic activities, which in conjunction with other geomorphic processes, provide unique architecture to the coasts with above varied geomorphic features. That too, the Indian coasts were inferred to stand as testimony to the vibrant tectonic activities and other related geodynamic processes of the Quaternary period (Ramasamy, 1989; Ramasamy, 1999).

The paper deals with the historical perspective of the tsunamis, much widely discussed Kumari Kandam and Lemuria continent and the palaeo-time series changes on the past continents and oceans, disastrous tsunamis since 16^th century and archeological evidences indicating shore line changes along Tamil Nadu coast.

INTRODUCTION

A tsunami is a natural phenomenon consisting of a series of waves generated when water in a lake or the sea is rapidly displaced on a massive scale. Earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions and large meteorite impacts all have the potential to generate a tsunami. The effects of a tsunami can range from unnoticeable phenomenon to large scale devastation.

The term “tsunami” is derived from the Japanese language meaning harbour (“tsu”) and wave (“nami”). The term was coined by fishermen who returned to port to find the area surrounding the harbour devastated, although they had not been aware of any wave on the high seas. A tsunami is not a sub-surface event in the deep ocean; it simply has a much smaller amplitude (wave heights) offshore, and a very long wavelength (often hundreds of kilometers long), which is why they generally pass unnoticed at sea, forming only a passing “hump” in the ocean.

Tsunamis were historically referred to as tidal waves because when they approach land they take on the characteristics of a violent onrushing tide rather than the sort of cresting waves that are formed by wind action upon the ocean (with which people are more familiar). However, since they are not actually related to tides the term is considered misleading and its usage is discouraged by oceanographers.

Abstract

The recent tsunami occurred on 26^thDecember 2004, caused great devastation along the east coast of Tamil Nadu, India. As the said tsunami has caused colossal damages, the impact assessment has become essential for tsunami mitigation measures. In this context, the extent of tsunami inundation, loss of lives, property loss and damages to physical and natural resources have been assessed in the tsunami affected area between Ennore and Mahabalipuram along the east coast of Tamil Nadu.

IRS LISS III PAN merged satellite data and IKONOS data were used for mapping the pre-tsunami geomorphology and land cover conditions and IRS-P6 PAN merged satellite data were used to map the post – tsunami terrain conditions including the inundations. From the study it is inferred that wherever buildings and population are denser the loss is more. Hence, vertical expansion may be needed as an alternative or to supplement horizontal expansion. Bio-shield along coastal areas, involving raising of mangrove forests, planting of casurina, salicornia, palms, bamboo and other tree species and halophytes which can grow near the sea will serve as speed-breakers for the up rising waves.
