Introduction 
Building upon our foundational understanding of how weather intrinsically shapes crop development, from the micro-scale physiological responses to the broader patterns revealed by Indigenous Technical Knowledge, we now transition to a chapter dedicated to a highly practical and actionable synthesis of this critical interrelationship: Crop Weather Calendars. These calendars are far more than mere chronological charts; they represent systematically organized and dynamic compilations of meteorological information meticulously integrated with precise crop-specific data, designed to serve as an indispensable guide for optimizing agricultural practices. In this chapter, we will embark on a comprehensive exploration of Crop Weather Calendars, moving beyond the often informal or culturally embedded ecological calendars previously discussed. We will delve into how these powerful tools systematically integrate historical weather patterns, which involves analyzing longterm meteorological data to establish reliable averages and identify probabilities of specific weather events, such as the typical onset of monsoons, average frost dates, or periods of peak solar radiation. They also incorporate real-time meteorological data, bringing in current weather observations to track actual conditions against historical norms and initial forecasts. Furthermore, Crop Weather Calendars utilize future weather forecasts, drawing on short-, medium-, and long-range meteorological predictions to anticipate upcoming conditions (Fig.12.1). This integrated weather information is then critically aligned with the precise phenological stages of a given crop cultivar, recognizing that a crop’s sensitivity and requirements vary significantly throughout its life cycle. Our exploration will detail the essential components that constitute a robust crop weather calendar, including the identification of crucial growth periods, pinpointing the most sensitive and influential developmental stages of the crop like germination, tillering, flowering, and grain filling, where weather impacts are most pronounced. It also involves the establishment of weather thresholds, which means defining the optimal, critical, and damaging ranges of key weather

Variation in field crops between years is associated with many factors. This is mainly due to weather, soil and management factors. There is complex reaction of weather variables among themselves as well as with other factors. Therefore, many attempts were made to study the effect of weather variable on crop yield through simulation modeling.

Climate, soil, input and management factors influence the crop yield. Weather is the most important natural input that affects the agricultural production and productivity. The agricultural activities starting from the land preparation to harvest and post-harvest storage are greatly influenced by the weather. The effects of weather on crops may be direct such as those of precipitation, solar radiation, humidity, temperature, etc., or indirect such as those of pest, diseases, weed competition, etc. Thus, the success or failure of a crop is determined by the prevailing weather conditions. Although influence of weather conditions on yield is well established, the quantitative assessment is not always straight forward and simple. The quantitative assessment of the effect of weather on crops is an important application of agrometeorology. The relationship between weather and crop production has been understood through crop weather modelling and study on this aspect through a systematic approach started a century ago. The aim of developing crop weather models is to ensure better utilisation of resources and hence a more environmental friendly and sustainable agriculture.

A model is a schematic representation of the conception of a system or an act of mimicry or a set of equations, which represents the behaviour of a system. Its purpose is usually to aid in explaining, understanding or improving performance of a system. Agricultural models are mathematical equations that represent the reactions occurring within the plant and the interactions between the plant and its environment. However, it is a difficult task to represent any system completely in mathematical terms because of the complexity of the system. Universal models do not exist for the agricultural systems and agricultural models are built for specific purposes and the level of complexity is accordingly adopted. Different models are developed for different subsystems and several models may be built to simulate a particular crop or a particular aspect of the production system. Crop weather models may be defined as a simplified representation of the complex relationships between weather or climate on one hand and crop performance such as growth, yield or yield components, on the other hand by using mathematical and/or statistical techniques

1.1 Weather Parameters

The atmosphere is a gaseous component surrounding the earth as an integral part and its interaction with ocean (water bodies), other planets of the solar system and land (Earth) generates one physical product namely weather elements (temperature, pressure, wind, humidity, precipitation, etc.,) and these form the weather and climate of the Earth. The process of generation of weather and climate of the region is purely natural and cannot be modified by the human being. But they can do adaptation to the existing climate and weather for their sustainable life. The weather can be defined as day to day change in the atmosphere in terms of heat and moisture exchange, while the climate is average of long period weather covering larger area or a region.

The particular climate of a region dictates/permits the genesis of a particular bio-organism in that domain and this selected organism’s growth and multiplication are triggered by the prevailing weather of that particular climate. Hence weather parameters of the atmosphere are very important to human being and other organisms of the Earth. The details on weather elements are given in question and answer section of this book (Annexure-I)

Rainfed farming has a distinct place in the Indian agriculture, occupying 67 % of cultivated area contributing 44 % of food grains to our national food basket, supporting 40% of human and 65% of livestock population. The system is characterized by resource poor farmers, poor infrastructure and low investment in technology inputs. Even when full irrigation potential of the country is realized, 50% of the net sown area is continued to be rainfed. The important problems encountered in rainfed areas are unfavorable weather, limited choice of crops and varieties, low cropping intensity and unstable productivity. The research work done by the net work of AICRPDA (All India Co-ordinate Research Project for Dryland areas) centres and SAUs (State Agricultutal Universities) indicated that the production in rainfed environment could be enhanced by 200 % compared to the productivity of farmers’ field by adopting improved cropping systems and agro techniques.

3.1 Introduction

Crystallography is the science of crystals. The term crystal is derived from the Greek word “Crystallos” which means “ice”. The term was used for colorless quartz which was believed to be “fossilized” ice. Crystals are bodies bounded by flat surface, arranged on a definite plan which is an expression of the internal arrangement of the atoms. They are formed by consolidation of magma which is also considered as crystallization.

3.2 Terms in Use to Describe a "Crystal"

3.2.1 Faces

Faces are the plane surface in a crystal. The common faces are usually parallel to net planes containing the greatest number of lattice points or ions. Wide spacing between the net planes leads to development of faces in these planes. Faces are two types like and unlike faces.

The Mineral Kingdom presents a dazzling floral-display in the form of natural crystals. This is what makes mineralogy a very fascinating subject both for an amateur as well as an expert. Unless one visits the celebrated Lechuguilla cave in New Mexcio, USA it will be difficult to visualize the breathtaking beauty that crystals present. This, over 160 km cave is lined with gigantic as well as delicate gypsum crystals- as thin as human hair to several centimetres across and 6 m long . Crystals come in all shapes, sizes and colours. Their beauty and regular shape has not only attracted the scientists but made them objects of magical and mythical powers in many cultures of the world.

The study of crystals - including their growth, structure, classification by form and their physical properties forms the subject of crystallography. As of today one can’t think of this subject without x-ray crystallography, however, this being not in your syllabus only an introduction will be presented in the last chapter, while the entire section will be devoted to fundamental aspects of crystal morphology.

The section comprises four chapters. Chapter I describes and introduces the theme, presents a brief historical background of the development of the subject and gives some fundamental definitions. Chapter II presents the morphological elements including symmetry elements( plane, axes and centre of symmetry), parameters, indices, notation of crystal faces and other related aspects which are the basis for dividing crystals of all shapes and sorts into six or seven systems and several sub-types. This chapter will help you understand as to why mineral galena belongs to cubic system, while gypsum is monoclinic, or as to why an octahedron is represented by a symbol (111) but a cube with (100). Chapter III describes the seven systems and their sub-types and ends with an account of twinning- a curious feature quite often encountered among crystals. The section ends with a preliminary idea about stereographic projection and x-ray crystallography.

Applied agroclimatology integrates climatology with agronomy to understand and manage interactions between weather, climate, crops, soils and agricultural resources. It converts climatic observations and forecasts into practical information for sowing, irrigation, fertilizer application, pest management and harvesting. This chapter introduces agro-meteorological processes, crop-environment relationships, resource management and climate-smart decision-making. It explains how increasing temperatures, altered rainfall, droughts, floods and extreme weather threaten agricultural productivity and farmer livelihoods. Agroclimatic zoning, crop-calendar adjustment, suitable variety selection, early-warning systems and weather-based insurance are discussed as important approaches for strengthening food security, managing climate risks and developing resilient agricultural systems.

Introduction

Climate change has become one of the biggest challenges for the sustainable crop production. Prolonged droughts and desertification are among the issues faced by Indian hot arid zone where the rural poor and smallholders are most heavily affected. If people are to survive in these ever harsher conditions, their crops need to withstand drought, high temperatures and poor soils. Cactus crops are gaining increasing interest across the globe, in particular cactus pear or prickly pear {Opuntia ficus indica (L) Mill.} because of its unique characteristics which provide resilience to the harsh ecological conditions. Cactus pear is able to grow on land where no other crops are able to grow; it can be used to restore degraded land. It is the only crop that can be relied on when everything else fails. Cactus pear is grouped as CAM plant (Crassulacean Acid Metabolism), a photosynthesis mechanism evolved in some plants as an adaptation to arid conditions. In a plant using full CAM, the stomata in the leaves remain shut during the day to reduce evapotranspiration, but open at night to collect carbon dioxide (CO₂).

1. Introduction 
The intersection of nanotechnology and microalgal biodiesel production presents a compelling avenue for addressing the pressing challenges of sustainability, energy security, and environmental conservation (Cai et al., 2021a). Microalgae, microscopic photosynthetic organisms, have emerged as a promising source for biodiesel due to their high lipid content, rapid growth rates, and potential for cultivation in diverse environments as compare to other sources as given in Fig. 1. However, the commercialization of microalgal biodiesel has been hampered by various limitations, including low lipid productivity, inefficient harvesting techniques, and high production costs. Nanotechnology, with its ability to manipulate materials at the nanoscale, offers innovative solutions to enhance various stages of microalgal biodiesel production. From cultivation to processing, nanomaterials and nanodevices hold the potential to optimize efficiency, increase yields, and reduce environmental impacts. By improving light penetration, nutrient delivery, and CO2 utilization, nanotechnology-enabled systems enhance microalgal growth and lipid accumulation (Li et al., 2019; Cai et al., 2021b). Moreover, nanoscale structures facilitate the development of efficient harvesting methods, minimizing energy consumption and water usage. In biodiesel processing, nanocatalysts exhibit superior catalytic activity, enabling faster reaction times and higher yields in transesterification processes. Nanostructured membranes enhance the purification and separation of biodiesel, ensuring high-quality end products with minimal impurities. Despite these advancements, challenges such as scalability, cost-effectiveness, and environmental sustainability of nanotechnology-based microalgal biodiesel production persist (Zhao et al., 2018; Zhang et al., 2019). This chapter aims to provide an overview of the current status and future prospects of integrating nanotechnology into microalgal biodiesel production. Through a 2 | Nanotools for Microalgal Biodiesel Production comprehensive analysis of recent advancements, challenges, and opportunities, we seek to elucidate the potential of nanotechnology to drive the commercialization and widespread adoption of sustainable microalgal biodiesel. By fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and leveraging emerging technologies, we can pave the way towards a more sustainable and energy-efficient future.

Curriculum Design and Confidence Building, delves into the foundational elements that constitute an effective educational framework while simultaneously nurturing learners’ self-assurance and belief in their abilities. This chapter posits that a robust curriculum goes beyond the mere transmission of knowledge; it actively fosters an environment where students are empowered to learn, grow, and develop a strong sense of confidence in their learning journey (Fig.4.1). To achieve this dual objective, this chapter outlines the essential criteria and principles that underpin both thoughtful curriculum design and the intentional integration of confidence-building strategies.

The field itself is inherently interdisciplinary, drawing on foundational principles from meteorology, climatology, and diverse agricultural sciences. A Master’s curriculum builds a strong knowledge framework by exploring advanced atmospheric physics and dynamics, which provides a sophisticated understanding of weather patterns and climate variability. Simultaneously, it enhances the student’s comprehension of plant physiology, crop science, soil science, and other agricultural disciplines, enabling an effective analysis of how meteorological factors affect crop growth, development, yield, and overall quality.
• The relevance of Agricultural Meteorology is increasingly critical in the face of global climate change (Fig.5.1). Master’s studies in this area equip individuals with the specialized knowledge to analyze climate change impacts on agriculture, contribute to the development of adaptation

1.1. The Growing Problem of Pesticide Pollution
Pesticides are used in very great amounts in agricultural production for theprotection of crops against pests, diseases and weeds. They are also veryinstrumental in boosting agricultural productivity by ensuring food securityand preventing losses that may be caused by outbreaks of pests (Popp et al.,2013). However, the extensive use of pesticides has generally resulted in hugeenvironmental concerns. Improperlymanaged pesticide residues may remainin soil, water and even air for many years and create severe ecological andhealth hazards in the long run (Zhang et al., 2024). This widespread existenceof pesticides in the environment has raised a serious alarm concerning theiradverse impacts on biodiversity, soil fertility and quality of water, furtherbioaccumulation in the food chain that affects wildlife and human populations(Aktar et al., 2009).

ABSTRACT

Microalgae in general and Cyanobacteria in particular are considered to be ideal biotechnological tools for their importance in the production of food, feed, fuel, fertilizers, fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals and their role in pollution abatement. So far, only 20 strains of microalgae have been cultivated for industrial purposes. To make use of more such organisms, it is essential to first identify their biodiversity in the naturally occurring populations and establish their germplasm for further characterization. With this in view, a detailed survey was made to study the biodiversity of Cyanobacteria in the Veeranam lake soil microflora in the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu. Influence of physico-chemical parameters habitat preferences of these soil microalgae, and their light and Electron microscopic features have been documented. The selected species of Cyanophyceae were subjected to energy dispersive spectroscopic analysis (EDS). They were found to accumulate different elements such as Zn, P, Mg, Ca, Mn, S and N. Thus these observations would determine the chemical dialogue between the cell structures and role of the elements. Further, it gives the clue about the soil microflora growth requirements.

This chapter provides an introduction to cyclogenesis, nature of cyclone disaster and historic events. The mechanism that is in practice in cyclone mitigation, information dissemination and relief and rescue operations are detailed. As the state of Orissa is being battered more frequently by cyclones than any other state of India, special emphasis on cyclone disaster management system of Orissa is also discussed.

INTRODUCTION

Orissa state with immense natural resources is located between 17⁰27’N and 22⁰34’N latitudes and meridians of 81⁰27’E and 87⁰29’E longitudes. Orissa lies on the eastern coast of India with the waters of the Bay of Bengal swirling along its eastern and southeastern boundaries. It shares its boundaries with West Bengal and Jharkhand on the north, Chattisgarh on the west and Andhra Pradesh on the south. Out of the Indian mainland coastline of 7500 km, it constitutes a coastline of about 480 km. It extends for about 155,707 sq.km accounting about 4.74% of the total area of India. According to the 2001 census, it has 3.57 percent of the total population of India. Administratively, it has 30 districts, 3 Revenue Divisions, 58 Sub- Divisions, 51,061 villages and 127 Urban Centers.

Based on physiography, Orissa can be divided into three broad regions - the coastal plains, the middle mountainous region and the plateaus, and rolling up lands. The coastal plains extend from the River Subarnarekha in the north to the River Rushikulya in the south. The coastal zone covers nine districts namely Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Khurda, Cuttack, Bhadrak and Balasore. It is narrow in the north, widest in the middle, narrowest in the Chilika coast and broad in the south. The coastal belt of Orissa lacks hills excepting few hillocks and mounds in the northern and southern parts. It has extensive low lands adjacent to the sea, sloping gently towards the shoreline of the Bay of Bengal. The coastline consists of the lakes, lagoons, marshes, bays and islands and natural harbors. The lakes in Orissa are natural and artificial. One of the blazing example of the natural lake is the Chilika lake.There is only one bay in Orissa which is the Hukitola bay. Eventually there are only two islands in Orissa - the Short’s Islands and the Wheeler Islands. Among the natural harbor, there is only one of its type in Orissa i.e. Paradeep which holds its recognition as the deepest natural port in the whole of India. The main drainage system of this area is represented by several rivers at their old stages flowing sluggishly towards the sea, which form topographic features like peneplains, natural levees, deltas, etc. (Fig.1). The major rivers flowing in the coastal belts are the Subarnarekha, the Budhabalanga, the Baitarani, the Brahmani, the Mahanadi and the Rushikulya. This region is the combination of several deltas of varied sizes and shapes formed by these rivers. The coastal belt has an area of 40,166 sq. km with a population of 68,79,379, which is 45 percent of the population of 9 coastal districts of Orissa.

These cyclones and anticyclones, the large-scale rotating weather systems, characterized by distinct patterns of atmospheric pressure and wind, exert a profound influence on ocean conditions that are directly relevant to fisheries. From the dramatic impacts of cyclones – with their powerful winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surges – to the more subtle but equally important effects of anticyclones on sea state and overall weather stability, understanding these systems is crucial for anyone involved in marine fisheries. For those of you aiming to work in aquaculture, fishing operations, coastal management, or marine conservation, a solid grasp of cyclones and anticyclones will equip you to anticipate and respond to significant environmental changes. This knowledge will be invaluable for ensuring the safety of fishing fleets, managing aquaculture facilities in coastal areas, and understanding the broader ecological impacts on fish habitats and populations.
In this chapter, we will explore
• The fundamental characteristics of cyclones and anticyclones: We will unravel their pressure systems, wind patterns, and overall structure.
• Their formation and life cycle: We’ll examine the atmospheric conditions that give rise to these powerful systems and how they evolve over time.
• The direct and indirect impacts on the marine environment and fisheries: This will include the effects of strong winds on sea state, the influence of rainfall and runoff on coastal salinity, and the devastating potential of storm surges on coastal ecosystems and infrastructure.1 We will also touch upon how anticyclones can lead to periods of calm weather that can also have implications for fishing activities.

Abstract

A large tsunami triggered due to a massive earthquake of 9.3M in the offshore of Sumatra on 26^th December 2004 created havoc in several countries of the Indian Ocean. The deadly tsunami waves lashed the towns adjoining the coastline of several countries including Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, India and Sri Lanka causing more than 1,50,000 deaths. The earthquake occurred along the plate boundary is marked by a subduction zone between the Indian plate and the Burmese micro plate. In Andhra Pradesh, six coastal Districts were affected and amongst them four south coastal districts experienced maximum damage. In the present study, Tuppalapalem (vagarru revenue village) of Vakadu mandal, Nellore District was selected as a case study for discussion in the article. The objective of the study was to make an inventory of the damages to the natural and physical resources, by preparing pre and post-tsunami maps on geomorphology, land use / land cover, tsunami inundation and finally the tsunami risk zonation map on 1:8,000 scale. In this process, water and soil samples of the affected regions were also collected and chemical analysis was carried out. The data on damages were collected using a specially formulated data sheet. High resolution IKONOS data of January 2000 and IRS data of January 2005 were used for the generation of respectively the pre and post-tsunami geomorphology and land use / land cover maps. Ground truth data were also incorporated in these thematic maps.

The study has revealed that the water in all the bore wells became brackish after tsunami. About 80 country boats, 40 fibre boats and nets were lost with an estimated loss of about one crore. The tidal waters damaged the bunds of the aqua-farms and deposited the transported sediments in them. The extensive casuarina plantations, were reduced by the onslaught of tsunami and the casuarina trees became brown due to their contact with tidal waters. From amongst the various geomorphic units mapped in the study area, the beach, spits, shoals, creeks, swales, palaeo creeks were inundated by tsunami where as beach ridges, dune complexes and stabilized sand dunes were not affected and hence inferred as barriers. Geomorphology, land use / land cover and the tsunami inundation maps, tsunami risk zonation map were prepared showing very high, high and moderate zones of tsunami risks. It is recommended to take up casuarina plantations extensively along the coast as a biowall, which will also provide employment to the local people. The shallow aquifers of the coastal environment were contaminated by the tidal waves. Hence, drinking water should be supplied through protected water supply schemes. As a part of the community development, proper awareness must be created through training and appraisal to the fisherman community to face such natural disasters. The coastal regulation zone act, which prohibits any construction activity within 500m of the high tide line, should be strictly enforced. Keeping in view of the experience, a holistic tsunami protection plan is needed to safe guard the Indian coasts.

Abstract

The tsunami has struck many coastal countries of South Asia on 26 December 2004 and caused greater devastation along Andaman - Nicobar and Indian coasts. In India, Tamil Nadu coast is worst affected in Kanyakumari, Nagapattinam and Cuddalore districts. Subsequently, damage assessment, in respect of natural and physical resources, was done using Remote Sensing and GIS in parts of Cuddalore and Pondicherry coasts. The structural damages were studied village wise and categorized as maximum, moderate and least affected areas. As far as the natural resources are concerned, the changes in geomorphology, land use/ land cover, soil and water have been studied. On the basis of the same, the risk maps were also generated in GIS environment.

Agriculture has long been at the mercy of the weather, and in today’s datadriven world, harnessing meteorological information is more critical than ever. Weather intelligence—the process of collecting, analyzing, and disseminating weather data—supports decision-making in diverse fields such as aviation, transportation, emergency management, and especially agriculture (Fig 3.1). This chapter explores how advanced data acquisition methods and robust database management techniques underpin agricultural weather intelligence. It covers the variety of data sources available, details strategies for integrating and ensuring the quality of vast datasets, and examines the forecasting techniques that transform raw data into actionable insights for precision forecasting and decision making in food production. Fig. 3.1. Weather Data Acquisition System In this chapter, we not only discuss the technological means by which weather data is collected—from satellites, ground sensors, and IoT networks—but also dive into the structure of weather databases. These repositories house surface weather observations, radar and satellite imagery, upper air measurements, and outputs from weather models. Further, we outline the different forecast types and forecasting methodologies that are essential to interpreting this data, ranging from nowcasting for immediate weather conditions to seasonal forecasting that supports long-term planning. Finally, the role of big data analytics in supporting precision forecasting and optimizing decision-making in agricultural production is examined, highlighting the integration of advanced techniques like numerical

2.1. Open source satellite data

The satellite images have been invaluable information sources for Natural Resource Management. They provide synoptic view of the Earth periodically helping in inventory, surveying, and monitoring in agriculture, hydrology, geology, mineralogy, land cover, land use and environment. Free global satellite image data of spatial resolutions of 1m to 1 km and spectral resolution of single band to hyperspectral are available from an increasing number of sources (Table 2.1).

6.1 Introduction
Our journey through remote sensing has, thus far, focused on the remarkable capabilities of various platforms and sensors to observe Earth’s atmosphere and surface. From the localized, high-resolution insights provided by groundbased instruments like Wind Profilers and SODARs, to the expansive, global coverage offered by an array of satellite-borne imagers, sounders, radars, and lidars, we’ve seen how a continuous stream of invaluable meteorological data is acquired.
However, the mere act of collecting this data, no matter how sophisticated the technology or comprehensive the observations, represents only the initial phase of its lifecycle. The true power and utility of remote sensing data are unlocked only when it can be efficiently organized, securely preserved, and readily available to the diverse community of meteorologists, climate scientists, researchers, and operational forecasters who rely on it daily. This necessitates a profound understanding of the principles and practices governing data formats, data storage, and data access.
The sheer volume, velocity, and variety of remote sensing data pose significant challenges. Petabytes of information are generated annually, requiring robust infrastructure and standardized methodologies to ensure its integrity, interoperability, and long-term usability. Without effective strategies for managing this deluge of information, the potential of remote sensing to enhance weather prediction, advance climate science, and inform critical decision-making would remain largely untapped. 

This chapter deals with data importing, exporting and data manipulations in R. R can import almost all kinds of data format. The basic data format of .txt and .csv and data from other softwares like MS office .xls and .xlsx, spss ……, stata ……., etc. however, we will discuss in this chapter to read and write the basic formats and the .xlsx data which we use the most. Further, we will also discuss the basic data manipulations. For a detailed reading on data manipulation, readers can refer to the first book of the series namely “Data Handling and Manipulation in R”.
2.1. Primary Spectral Data Processing
The original spectra consisting of relative reflectance values of 2151 points (at 1 nm interval) between 350 and 2500 nm were averaged at every tenth-nanometer wavelength interval from 360 to 2490 nm by integration technique. Thus, the new spectra contained reflectance values at 360, 370, 380, 2490 nm, are inclusive. For example, the new reflectance value for 360 nm represented an integrated value of the original reflectance values from 356 to 365 nm, inclusive. Similarly, the reflectance at 400 nm was an integrated reflectance values from 396 to 405 nm, while the reflectance at 2490 nm was an integrated value of reflectance from 2486 to 2495 nm. This was done to reduce the volume of data for analysis and to match it more closely to the spectral resolution of the instrument (3 to 10 nm). This procedure resulted in a new dataset, with reflectance values specified for 214 wavelengths for all samples, which were further processed for noise removal.
2.2. Importing Data in R
We can rerad many format of tabular data in R such as excel, text, csv, etc. In thid book we will be using the csv format. Before reading the data, arrange data in excel/CSV sheet so that spectral data in column is followed by chemical data/ lab data. This will ensure that if any soil property or properties added in next column there is no need to change code for selection of spectral data in R environment.

Abstract

Carrying out effective and sustainable agriculture has become an important issue in recent years. A key to this is the usage of modern technologies for precision agriculture. Recent technological developments allowed envisioning sensor devices with distributed ambient sensory network, which could be a potential technology for monitoring various natural phenomena (weather parameters, soil moisture, etc.) at micro level. As more and more agricultural data are virtually being harvested along with the crops and are being collected/ stored in databases, the same can be used in productive decision making if appropriate data mining techniques are developed/applied. As a case study for this, an experiment was conducted with four consecutive agricultural (Kharif and Rabi) seasons in a semi-arid region of India to understand the crop-weather-environment-pest/diseases relations using wireless sensory and field-level surveillance data on closely related and interdependent pest/disease dynamics of groundnut crop. Association rule and multivariate regression mining techniques/algorithms were propose developed /tailor-made to turn the data into useful information/ knowledge/relations/trends to know crop-weather- environment-pest/disease continuum. These findings have been used for development of prediction models (cumulative and non-cumulative) followed by a web based pest/disease decision support system.

Abstract

Droughts are normal recurring climatic phenomena that vary in space, time, and intensity. The spatial and temporal variability and multiple impacts of droughts provide challenges for mapping and monitoring on regional scales. Large historical datasets are required in drought studies to understand the complex inter-relationship between the climatic and meteorological data. Extraction of valuable information from such large data archives demands an automated and efficient way. Data mining is answer to above problem as it has the potential to search for hidden pattern and identify the relationship between the datasets. For the current research, rainfall data from 1951-2006 was used to compute Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and NOAA-AVHRR NDVI images for the period 1981-2006 was used to calculate Vegetation Condition Index (VCI). SPI and VCI were used as input parameters in the Apriori Algorithm for generating the association rules. Interesting rules were developed identifying the relationship between user-specified target episodes and meteorological events. Therefore, spatial and temporal pattern of drought was achieved with 88% confidence.

As the adage in data science goes, Garbage in, garbage out– a truth that resonates profoundly within the realm of agricultural system simulation. The chapter shifts focus from the theoretical constructs of models to the vital practical considerations of data requirements. This chapter will delve into the indispensable role that accurate, comprehensive, and well-structured data plays in every stage of crop modeling, from initial parameterization and rigorous calibration to robust validation and reliable application. Without the right data, even a theoretically perfect model cannot accurately mimic the complex dynamics of the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum or provide trustworthy insights for agricultural decision-making. This chapter will systematically unpack the various categories of data essential for crop modeling. It will meticulously detail the specific characteristics and sources of weather data, which serve as the primary atmospheric drivers. It will then explore the crucial properties and measurement techniques for soil data, underpinning the understanding of water and nutrient availability. The discussion will extend to crop genetic and physiological data, which define the inherent capabilities and responses of specific plant varieties. Furthermore, the chapter will cover management data, illustrating how human interventions are integrated into the modeling framework. Beyond merely listing data types, this section will critically examine the challenges associated with data acquisition, including issues of quality, resolution, consistency, and spatial representativeness.

Introduction

The first step of geostatistical analysis in R is the creation of dataset which is acceptable in R environment by using the data collected from field survey or laboratory experiments. Different type of data is collected during experiments e.g. sand content, silt content, organic carbon content, geographical location of data points, soil type, land use type etc. Here, we will discuss how these data are converted into a acceptable dataset format for R environment and how we manage these data. In R this task is performed in two steps. First, a data structure is created to hold the data and second is the entering or exporting the data into data structure.

Introduction

Data input or capture is the operation of encoding the data and incorporating in the database. The creation of a clean error free digital database is a complex and critical task determining the very usefulness of a GIS. GIS data represent not only where the graphic or cartographic features occur, but also the associated attributes of them.

Data input to a geographical information system involves

(a) Entering the spatial data (digitizing);

(b) Entering the non-spatial, associated attributes and

(c) Linking the spatial to the non-spatial data.

At each stage necessary verification and checking procedures shall be deployed to ensure an error free database.

Introduction

Data are the most critical element of a GIS. It is reported that more than two thirds of the time and expenditure to develop a GIS is spent on data collection and organization. Understanding and appreciating the criticality of data is of paramount significance to practice GIS. This chapter is complementary to database concepts chapter discussed in Level II and deals with the fundamentals to start with and the concepts of building an information organization.

Data - A Definition and Certain Points to Ponder

“Data” are defined as a body of facts or figures, which have been gathered systematically for one or more specific purposes.”

Introduction

The concept of database is the approach to information organization in computer-based data processing. (Date, 1995 and Everest, 1986).

A Geographic Information System is as good as the data contained in it. Accurate and efficiently organized data are critical to the durability of the system. Data collection, capture and organization will occupy much of the time in building a GIS solution. The analysis potential of a GIS will depend on the database. It is essential to understand database concepts to practice GIS. It is erroneous to view these GIS databases as mere stores of information. The database is used to abstract very specific sorts of information about reality and organize it in a way that will prove useful during subsequent analysis. The database should be viewed as a representation or model of the world developed for a very specific application.

Conversion of real world geographical variation into discrete objects is done through data models. They represent the linkage between the real world domain of geographic data and computer representation of these features. Data models discussed here are for representing the spatial information.

4.1 INTRODUCTION

Database management system is a computer program to store, search, manipulate retrieve and give the result. Vast amount of spatial data are available and it is necessary to arrange them, store them for retrieval and analysis. Attribute data adds intelligent to GIS. Without database, a GIS will be just a Cad software. Cad softwares do not have database. GIS softwares have their own databases besides it has the potential to link with external database like Oracle, MS Access, MS Excel, Informix, INGRESS, Sybase and dbase. The data available in paper has to be digitally stored in a proper order. Previously the data were stored in a a flat file format where the data was stored without any structure. But to search and retrieve and analyse the database, database structures were developed. There are of 4 types of database structures namely Hierarchical, Network, Relational database and Object orientation.

Tables are made of rows and columns. Rows represent a map feature. Columns represents characteristic of map feature. Row is called a record or a tupule column is a field or an item. Table 4.1 is a table where rows 1, 2 and 3 represent the locations with the soil types. A column soil type represents various soil types.

Introduction

Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.; Family- Arecaceae) also known as Khajoor, Kharek is an ancient important fruit tree of semi-arid and arid regions of the world. It grows well under poor desertic soils due to its hardy plant characteristics and deep root system. It is also suitable fruit trees for growing under saline irrigation conditions. It is well known fact for date palm that its feet in the water and its head in sun. It requires dry hot climate for growth and development of fruits. In arid region, crop production is risky preposition, where date palm cultivation contributes in achieving food security, high nutritive value food, crop diversification, desertification control, higher income generation and foreign exchange earnings. It can be grown at such places where adequate irrigation facility is available besides other dry hot climate conditions (Chandra et al, 1992; Singh and Dhandar, 2007). Better returns from date plantation can be achieved through good management practices besides adequate marketing of produce. The quality produce and its marketing will help to increase the income from date palm cultivation.

The content presented in this chapter is exploratory and reflects emerging trends in integrating weather intelligence with decision support systems. The term “weather intelligence” is introduced as a framework, with ongoing research expected to further refine and expand upon these ideas as technologies evolve. In an era where climate variability and extreme weather events increasingly threaten global food systems, the integration of advanced decision support systems (DSS) with what we are now calling weather intelligence has emerged as a transformative paradigm. This chapter explores how food production— encompassing agriculture, fisheries, and animal husbandry—can harness integrated weather intelligence to inform real-time crisis management, strategic planning, and risk mitigation. The discussion is exploratory in many respects, as the concept of weather intelligence represents an innovative framework that challenges traditional forecasting methods and decision support tools (Fig. 9.1). Drawing on multidisciplinary research and practical case studies, we examine the building blocks of decision support systems tailored to food production. We then discuss the integration of weather intelligence into crisis response and strategic planning, highlighting both established risk mitigation approaches and emerging tools designed to anticipate and respond to extreme weather events. By contextualizing these developments within the broader scope of sustainable food production, this chapter offers an in-depth analysis and a forward-looking vision for decision support and response management in a rapidly changing climate.

From understanding the large-scale circulation patterns to deciphering the influence of regional phenomena like the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), we will unravel the key drivers that forecasters consider. The chapter will then explore the spectrum of forecasting approaches, ranging from statistical models based on historical data to dynamic models that simulate the intricate physical processes of the atmosphere and ocean. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, we will examine the crucial link between monsoon forecasting and the needs of the agricultural sector. We will revisit the expectations of farmers regarding forecast information – their need for accuracy, timeliness, localization, specificity, and actionable advice. By understanding the gap between current forecasting capabilities and these requirements, we can better appreciate the ongoing efforts to bridge this divide through improved forecasting techniques and effective dissemination strategies. Soil organic matter is among the most complex materials existing in nature. In addition to the organic constituents present in undecayed plant and animal tissues, soil organic matter contains living and dead microbial cells, microbially synthesized compounds and an endless array of derivatives of these materials produced as the result of microbial activity. Soil organic matter probably contains most of the naturally occurring organic compounds. Some components of soil organic matter are no doubt distinctive to the soil environment, particularly those involving inorganic-organic complexes.

Biological activity or index of a soil is the function of number of organisms present in soil and their physiological efficiency. The rate of respiration can be used as an index of the biological activity of soil as it reflects the physiological efficiency of the organisms. Monitoring of dehydrogenase, which are respiratory enzymes and integral part of all soil organisms, will give a measure of biological activity of soil at a given time.

During respiration biological oxidation of reduced compounds occur which is catalyzed by dehydrogenase. In the process TTC gets reduced to a pink coloured compound Triphenyl formazan (TPF) which can be quantitatively extracted by methanol and measured colorimeterically. The soil dehydrogenase activity in the current experiment was measured as per the methods of Cassida, (1977).

ABSTRACT

Kadayampatty Panchayat Union is situated in the northern part of Salem district, adjoining the Dharmapuri district of Tamil nadu. It lies between the latitudes 11°45’ -12°N and longitudes 78° -78°15’E in the Toposheet No.58I/1. The study area mainly consists of the rocks of late Precambrian age that are characterised by migmatitic gneisses, Ultramafic rocks and Pyroxenite. In this study an attempt has been made for demarcating groundwater techniques. Resistivity of rock formation varies over a wide range, depending on the material density, porosity, pore size and shape, water content, quality and temperature. In relatively porous, highly jointed and fractured formation the resistivity is controlled more by water content and quality with in the formation then by the rock resistivity. For demarcating groundwater potential zones in the Kadayampatty Panchayat Union water table analysis and ten Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) followed by Schlumberger electrode configuration were carried out. The maximum depth of investigation was 150mts. The electrode spreads were generally in steps of five meters interval up to 50 mts and 10 mts interval up to 150 mts. VES location were selected with in the study area with respect to their topographic features. Inverslope method proposed by Sankaranarayan (1974) et.al has been used to evaluate the geoelectrical parameters in order to demarcate to potential groundwater zones for new dug well and bore well locations. The lithological interpretation reveals that the presence of a maximum of five geoelectrical formations in the study area viz. Topsoil, weathered zone, fissure and fractured zone, fracture basement and fresh basement. Howevers all five formations do not occur throughout the study area, as the maximum and minimum of geoelectric layers are four and three respectively. Similarly a thin geoelectric layer was observed in some places also. The comparatively high resistivity values with corresponding high values of thickness are indicative of a wide stretch of unweathered and unfractured fresh rock layers. A highly weathered (saturated) basement is indicated by the extremely low resistivity value. The depth to the fresh basement varies.

Abstract

Population of Rajasthan as per Census 2011 is 68,621,012 persons which is much higher than census 2001 that records 56,507,188. It includes 12 districts of Rajasthan. Western Rajasthan covers about 61% area of the total geographical area and 39.51% population of the total population of the Rajasthan. The growth rate of population is much higher than that of the Rajasthan State. In the census 1981 Western Rajasthan had registered a phenomenal increase of 35.48 per cent over 1971 population. Regional pattern of growth rate in western Rajasthan shows that extreme hot arid region district (Barmer) is on top having 32.55 per cent growth rate whereas Indira Gandhi Canal Region (Ganganagar) district has least population growth of 10.06 per cent only. In 1981, the average urban growth rate had been 54.52 per cent. In 2001, the rural density of population was 83 persons per sq. km.

10.1 Introduction

Biomass fuels are a potential source of renewable energy. One of the major barriers to their widespread use is that biomass has a lower energy content than traditional fossils fuels, which means that more fuel is required to get the same amount of energy. When combined — low energy content with low density -the volume of biomass handled increases enormously. Compaction or densification is one way to increase the energy density and overcome handling difficulties.

Densification means compaction of loose material or to increase density of loose biomass so that its volumetric efficiency can be increased. Densification essentially involves two parts; the compaction under pressure of loose material to reduce its volume and to agglomerate the material so that the product remains in the compressed state. The resulting solid may be a briquette, a pellet and a cube. It will be briquettes if roughly, it has a diameter greater than 30 mm. Smaller sizes are normally termed pellets though the distinction is arbitrary. The process of producing pellets is also different from the typical briquetting processes. The densified product can be developed in the cubical shapes as well.

If the material is compacted with low to moderate pressure (0.2-5 MPa), then the space between particles is reduced. Further, increasing the pressure will, at a certain stage particular to each material, collapse the cell walls of the cellulose constituent, thus approaching the physical, or dry mass and more, density of the material. The pressure required to achieve such high densities are typically 100 MPa plus. This process of compaction is entirely depending on to the pressure exerted on the material and its physical characteristics including its moisture content.

3.1. Determination of Bulk Density of Soil

3.1.1. Determination of Bulk Density of an Undisturbed Soil

Bulk density of soil is expressed as the ratio of the mass (weight) of soil particle to their total volume including the pore space between the soil particles. Alternately, it is the weight of unit volume of dry soil. It is usually expressed in the unit of gram per cubic centimeter (g/cc) or mega gram per cubic meter (Mg/m³). In fine textured soil bulk density varies from 1.00 to 1.60 g/cc, whereas in coarse textured soil from 1.20 to 1.80 g/cc.

Introduction

Low and erratic precipitation, diurnal fluctuations in temperature and low humidity are the typical characteristics of deserts and their margins. Further, strong winds, sunny and very bright days and unpredictable periods of drought and famines are regular features. These lands are poor in fertility. Uninterrupted increase in human and animal pressures is violating carrying capacity of the natural resources, thus resultant is desertification.

Arid zones are described as a part of the drylands, and have the most severe edapho-climatic conditions. The major distinguishing feature for defining and for planning for the arid zone is the low rainfall (below 500 mm or Aridity Index <0.20) with more than 50% inter-annual variability. This makes a great difference in terms of the nature of the ecosystem, the socio-economic environment and the challenges for sustainability. High wind and solar regimes further increase the effect of rainfall variability and the whole complex makes a fragile ecosystem in which small disturbances may cause great loss to the sustainability, which are sometimes irreversible (Hou’erou, 1996). The hot arid zones of the world are economically and environmentally disadvantaged, with unique problems. The ecosystems of these zones are highly fragile with large risks that cause severe impediments to development programs. Of the total land area in the world, arid zones cover 18.8% and the hyper-arid zones account for 22.3% of the total arid zones (FAO, 1989).

Abstract

Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in West Africa with a dry tropical climate characterised by a short rainy season and a long dry season. The annual rainfall varied between 300mm in the northern part of the country to 1200mm in the meridian part. Since many years, the degradation of climatic conditions is observed. Therefore, the annual rainfalls of the 1971-1981 period were inferior to those of the precedent periods, and also the deterioration of the climatic conditions led the limits of some ishoteques “isohyète” to move southward, more than 50km farther. Furthermore, the decennial rainfalls since 1920 were subjected to a latitudinal displacement to the south. For example the ishoteque “isohyète” 500mm which were located at the North of the 15°N outside Burkina Faso during the years 1950-1960 moved gradually year by year and reached the 14°N during the years 1970-1980 inside Burkina Faso.

Abstract

Conversion of an already arid land into a desert through indiscriminate human actions magnified by droughts. Such actions include overgrazing, repeated burning, intensive farming, and stripping of vegetation for firewood. One quarter of the earth’s surface is threatened by desertification - an area of over 3.6 billion hectares. Since 1990, Six million hectares of productive land are lost every year due to land degradation. Desertification threatens the liveihoods of more than one billion people and has already made over 135 million people homeless. Desertification does not occur in linear, easily mappable patterns. Deserts advance erratically, forming patches on their borders. Areas far from natural deserts can degrade quickly to barren soil, rock, or sand through poor land management.

Concept and Definition

Desertification is a major problem in the drylands of India, affecting the way of life for its inhabitants. The problem is more severe in the arid lands in the northwestern part of the country. There have been a few numbers of definitions of the word “Desertification”. However for simplicity of its origin and meaning we would refer to two of the frequently used ones; (1) proposed in 1991 by UNEP: “Land degradation in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas resulting mainly from adverse human impact and (2) prepared for the Earth Summit at Rio, held in June 1992, for inclusion in Agenda 21, as “Land degradation in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas resulting from climatic variations and human activities. (Anonymous 1992).

Comparing two of these initial definitions, it would show that first one indicated desertification as a state of natural resources like soil and vegetation, mainly resulting from human activity while the second one included climate as a major cause. However, it reduced the emphasis of human activities as being the primary responsible factor and tried to link the possible impact of climate change on desertification. But the simplicity of the 1992 definition of desertification helped researchers to bring in sharp focus on the special environmental and socio-economic problems of the drylands.

So over the years, the key words that explains the term “desertification” has been changing or are being amended for specific purposes. This would at least mean that the problem of desertification is still debated world-wide, and its impact is not limited to some nations/regions as was presumed and discussed in first of UNCCD platforms. Therefore, as a precaution and combating this process, few catchy words like non-sustainable management, productivity, over-exploitation of natural resources, dryland livelihood, droughts are found to surround the word desertification. Earlier, some, people equated desertification with advancing boundaries of the existing desert and in India, examples of expansion / contraction of geographical boundary of Thar desert was a public debate among various researchers and planners. In the same time, some of the definitions tried to broaden its geographical scope so that greater populations suffering from adverse effects of land degradation would benefit out of various remedial measures.

Introduction

Desertification is now accepted as a major environmental issue because of the fact that 69.5 percent area of the world’s dry lands and more than 1.2 billion people in over 110 countries living in this habitat are affected by various land degradation processes. During last 20 years, researchers have focused their discussion either on a condition or a cause or a set of processes to assess different paradigms of desertification. Several studies carried out in arid western part of Rajasthan (Singh et al., 1992, Kar, A. 1993b, Kar, 1995, Dregne, H.E. 2000, Kar et al.2007) show that wind erosion is still a major problem. Though, there are many instances of location specific problems like water erosion, salinity/ alkalinity and water logging, about 75% area in arid western Rajasthan is affected by wind erosion hazard of different intensities (SAC, 2007, Kar et al. 2009). Decreasing rainfall gradient from east to west and increasing wind strength in that direction are responsible for the spatial variability in sand reactivation pattern. Water erosion in the form of sheet, rill and gully erosion is a major problem in areas, where average annual rainfall exceeds 350 mm, the rainfall intensity is high and the topographic and soil characteristics favour high run-off. Destruction of vegetation cover and excessive ploughing of shallow soils, especially on the sloping lands, accelerate the problem.
