Purpose

The determination of water holding capacity in soils is important as it gives an idea of the capacity of soil to hold water for the use by crops. The light soils which do not hold such water require more frequent irrigations than heavy clay soils; well decomposed organic matter increases the water holding capacity. Exchangeable sodium and type of clay mineral also have a marked effect on water holding capacity. Water holding capacity of soils is useful for selection of soils for irrigability classification. It also helps for comparing other properties of soils.

Water holding capacity of soil is the amount of water that a given soil can hold against the force of gravity. Soil texture and organic matter are the key components that determine the water holding capacity of a soil. Soils with smaller particle sizes (silt and clay) have larger surface area and can hold more water as compared to sand which has large particle sizes and smaller surface area. It is an important hydro-physical characteristic of a soil because it provides simple means of determining useful moisture levels to maintain soil for good plant growth. Detail procedure for determination of water holding capacity of soil using Keen box method (Piper, 1966) is described here.

Over most of the wetness range in which plant roots normally function, all the water in soil is controlled by matric forces. A relationship between water content and matric or soil water suction is referred to as water characteristics of the soil. Increase in matric suction is associated with decrease in water content in the soil and the process is known as desorption. On the other hand with decrease in suction soil moisture content increases and this process is known as sorption. The curves showing relationship during progressive intake and withdrawal of water are known as sorption and desorption curves respectively.

Tensiometer is suitable for finding out soil water characteristic at tension values below 2.0 kPa, whereas gas phase pressure is required for higher tensions. A pressure chamber containing a porous membrane or a ceramic plate with all its accessories to provide regulated compressed air is most convenient. A detailed methodology to determine water characteristic curve by pressure plate apparatus is described below.

Soil aggregates refers to a group of two or more primary particles which cohere to each other more strongly than surrounding particles. Under field condition, all such units also cohere to some degree with neighboring aggregates and form larger aggregates. Such aggregates form and break easily into smaller aggregates during tillage and by disruptive action of water and air. The aggregates maintaining their identity are those in which the cohesive forces among particles are greater than the disruptive forces. A quantitative characterization of aggregates is done by determining aggregate stability and size distribution of aggregates. The aggregate stability refers to the resistance of soil aggregates to breakdown by water, air and mechanical manipulations.

The soil aggregates which can stand the disruptive forces of wetting by water are known as water stable aggregates. Therefore, the process of wetting, disruption of dry aggregates and screening of aggregates of different sizes should reasonably compare to the disruptive action of water and mechanical forces of tillage under wet conditions. The vacuum wetting of dry soil largely simulates the process of soil wetting in the surface layers but the immersion wetting is more comparable to the wetting of surface soil by irrigation. Similarly, sieving under water compares more closely with the disruptive action of water and other mechanical forces. The mean weight diameter (MWD) of water stable aggregates is a useful index to characterize the change in structure due to tillage. The mean weight diameter can be calculated using following equation.

Abstract

Brinjal being native vegetable crop of India possesses rich variability. It is one of the important crops for arid region with limited irrigation water. The large variability in genetic resources available in this crop, provide scope for development of varieties with desirable characteristics such as earliness, high fruit quality and yield, tolerance to high temperature and fruit and shoot borer (FSB).

1. Introduction

With the advent of globalization and subsequent economic liberalization, the focus of Indian agriculture is shifting from “subsistence” to “commercial” mode, where farming is viewed as a “business” rather than “life-support” system of poor farmers. Enabling farmers “decision-making” capacity is a primary driver of success in the market-oriented agriculture. This “commercial focus” has brought tremendous changes in the “nature” and “mode” of extension work. On the other hand, extension work organizations in developing countries like India, are being impacted by sharp decline in public sector funding, rapid technological innovations especially in the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), and the shift to a knowledge-based workforce. These developments created new opportunities for the extension workers to perform the information dissemination, capacity building and technology application more effectively. 

Introduction

The globally growing demand for water has ushered the need for its efficient and judicial utilizations in all fields, and agriculture in particular being a single largest consumer of water. The majority of irrigation projects in India perform at a very low efficiency, which calls for application of efficient water management technologies for meeting the increasing water demands. Estimation of soil moisture or crop evapotranspiration from climatic parameters provides objective criteria for irrigation management. Methods to estimate evapotranspiration require huge climatic data, which are seldom available and not applied by common crop growers. Determining crop water requirement through soil moisture measurement at several locations is time consuming, destructive exercise, and may not give proper assessment of crop water need. The plant based indicator approach considers the plant water status for scheduling irrigation. This might be considered as the ideal criterion because the plant water is a good integrator of the soil, water and climatic parameters.

Introduction

India is the second largest producer of fruits crops in the world but productivity of arid fruit crops especially in western Rajasthan is miserably low.The productivity as well as the quality of fruit crops is affected to a greater extent due to various physiological disorders. The extremes of environmental variables like changing environmental conditions such as temperature, moisture, unbalanced soil nutrients, inadequate or excess of certain soil minerals, extremes of soil pH, poor drainage and deficiency of micronutrients as well as macronutrient causes many more disorders (Kumar and Kumar, 2015). At present, the climatic scenario of arid region is also changing and the problems like frost, temperature fluctuation, moisture fluctuation, high evaporation and low precipitation as well as nutrient imbalances are becoming a challenge for cultivation of many arid fruit crops. Reasons of low productivity in hot arid ecosystem of western Rajasthan are primarily physiological or stress related disorders such as styler-end browning in ber, fruit cracking in bael and pomegranate, internal necrosis in aonla and black and white nose in date palm. The world wide approximately 70% of crop yield reduction is the direct effect by abiotic factors (Acquaah 2007). In this chapter, we discussed the problems associated with ber, pomegranate, aonla, date palm & bael especially physiological disorders which will certainly help the farmers in timely overcoming of these maladies for getting satisfactory remunerative prices from arid fruit crops under hot ecosystem of western Rajasthan.

Introduction

Globally, the SOC pool of 1,550 Pg (1 Pg = 1015 g) to 1-m depth is about three times that of biotic and twice that of atmospheric pools (Post et al. 1982, Watson et al. 2000). In arid and semi-arid ecosystems, SOC contents show high degree of spatial variability due to patchiness of vegetation (Wiesmeier et al. 2009). The arid ecosystem might play a key role in mitigation of climate change effects through sequestering carbon in soils (United Nations 2011). Therefore, a suitable land use system having high C sequestration potential for arid ecosystem needs to be identified and promoted. However, the prevailing conditions of arid ecosystems normally does not support dense vegetation. Therefore, low carbon stock is expected in both above-ground vegetation and below-ground soil. Fruit trees are an integral part of arid farming system and played a significant role to improve the nutritional security and employment opportunity of farmers but also have potential role to increase carbon storage both in biomass and soil. To quickly assess the soil carbon restoration programmes, it is important to know how much soil carbon is stored in an agricultural farm through adoption of different land management practices. Therefore, reliable estimates of SOC pools are essential to establish the soil carbon sequestration programmes at different landscape scales.

A complex spatial soil properties pattern is directly controlled by soil internal factors and anthropogenic impacts.Hartemink et al. (2001) elaborate a strong decline in mineralogy, morphology and genesis of soil research than strong increase in pedometrics applications during 1967 to 2001. Hartemink and McBratney (2008) identified this change as “soil science renaissance”. Basically, the soil science deeply rooted in agriculture, geology, and chemistry but the paradigm has been shifted from classification and inventorization to quantification of soil patterns in spatial as well as temporal patterns and their impact on the ecosystem health and hydrological cycle. The environmental keen approach explains that soil is in the center of the ecosystem and highly interacting with the biotic and abiotic factors of the ecosystem and a complex pattern and process has been co-evolved with the time.

Elevation or height data of land surface above a defined vertical datum is stored in the form of raster grids which is known as Digital Elevation Model (DEM). The DEM data can be processed to derive many useful parameters like slope, aspect, curvature, roughness, etc. This process of quantitatively describing terrain obtained from DEM data through computation of many variables is known as Digital Terrain Analysis. Digital terrain analysis has applications in the various fields like hydrology, ecology, geomorphology, etc. DEM data for digital terrain analysis are available from the satellites like ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer), Cartosat, ALOS (Advanced Land Observation Satellite), and SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission).

In this exercise, we are going to discuss the derivation of some primary and secondary terrain attributes from DEM data in R software. For performing digital terrain analysis in R, following packages are required.

Disaster is defined as a serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society causing widespread human, material, economic or environmental losses, which exceed the ability of the affected community or society to cope using its own resources (ISDR 2002).

Disaster in Global context - The impact of natural disasters in terms of human and economic losses has risen in recent years, society in general has become more vulnerable to natural disasters. Those usually most affected by natural and other disasters are the poor and socially disadvantaged groups in developing countries as they are least equipped to cope with them (IFRC 2001).

In the past, the approach to disaster management was relief-focused and restricted to helping the area affected by the disaster. involves a continuous and integrated process of organizing, coordinating, and putting into action measures that are required or advantageous for preventing danger or threats, mitigating risk or its severity or consequences, building capacity through research and knowledge management, being ready to deal with any disaster, responding quickly to any situation that poses a threat to the community, determining the extent or severity of effects, evacuation, rescue and relief efforts, rehabilitation, and reconstruction.
Phases and Elements in Disaster Management
I. Pre-disaster phase: There are three components to the pre-disaster phase: preparedness, mitigation, and prevention.
II. The aftermath phase, encompassing response, recuperation, and restoration. All these components are connected by a structure of institutions and legislation.

9.1 What are Natural Disasters?

The natural disasters are earthquakes, floods, droughts, famines, heat waves, cyclones, wild fire, volcanic, aerosols (small particles), and landslides.

9.2 Disaster Management

Both physical solutions and institutional strategies should be developed to manage natural disasters. For flood disaster control the water flow should be checked. Institutional strategies do not rely on physical barriers and include flood plain management, flood and disaster warning systems, education and preparedness programmes.

A disaster is any event natural or manmade which creates an intense negative impact on people goods and services and or the environment and exceeds the affected community internal capability to respond prompting the need to seek outside assistance. In other words a disaster is a serious disturbance of a community or society interfere human resources losses and impacts on economically and environmentally or disaster means simply an event has unfortunate consequences on only on human but also on whole environment. Disaster can be two types’ Natural disaster and manmade disaster.

Generally speaking, emergency management is the ongoing process through which all people— individuals, organizations, and communities—manage risks in an effort to lessen the effect of catastrophes that may arise from those risks. The perception of danger by individuals who are exposed influences the actions that are taken.

Introduction

This is due to the destruction of environment which is caused by extraordinary natural destructive phenomena or human-induced hazards resulting in human hardship and suffering beyond recovery unless external aid is brought in.

Abstract

Climate change is a long-term change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns over periods of time that range from decades to millions of years. It may be a change in the average weather conditions or a change in the distribution of weather events with respect to an average. Climate change may be limited to a specific region, or may occur across the whole Earth.Since, time immemorial human beings have attempted to predict the disease occurrence informally by mere observing the changes in pattern of weather parameters. But the present scenario has been very much altered with the incessant and irrational use of natural resources exposing the atmosphere to the enormous encumbrance. Excessive CO₂ emissions, deforestation and injudicious use of chemicals in agricultural fields have ultimately led to the climate change, which needs an absolute engrossment. Climate change has also invited the emergence and resurgence of many of the pest and diseases posing a grave challenge to manage them. So there is a need for immediate action through Government policies and scientific community to combat the situation. Disease forecasting models may be one of the rescuing options to mitigate the problems of agriculture.

Abstract

The disease is an output of the interaction among host, pathogen, and the environment over a period of time. Given that a susceptible host and an aggressive pathogen are available, weather determines the intensity of the disease over time. To capture the dynamics of the interactions among these biophysical variables, efforts have been made in the past to understand the variables per se and their interactions through modeling approaches.  The important weather parameters are temperature; rainfall/dew; leaf wetness period, wind, bright sunshine hours all of which are in turn influenced by soil properties. The important parameters of host that can influence disease development are susceptibility; growth stage and form; structure and density of the plant population and overall health. For pathogen, to cause disease, it should be present in the vicinity, pathogenic, adaptable with reproductive fitness and possess efficiency of survival and dispersal.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) refers to oxygen gas that is dissolved in water. Fish are able to absorb oxygen directly from the water into their bloodstream using gills. There are three main sources of oxygen in the aquatic environment: 1) direct diffusion from the atmosphere; 2) wind and wave action; and 3) photosynthesis. Oxygen depletion refers to low levels of DO and may result in fish mortality. A concentration of 5 mg/L DO is recommended for optimum fish health. Sensitivity to low levels of dissolved oxygen is species specific, however, most species of fish are distressed when DO falls to 2-4 mg/L. Mortality usually occurs at concentrations less than 2 mg/L. If fishes gulfing on the water surface and also show the low swimming in the water it indicates deficiency of dissolved oxygen in pond.

Abstract

Desert or arid regions present a unique environment for microbial growth. Thar Desert of India harbours a plethora of nitrogen fixing bacteria ranging from symbiotic nitrogen fixers, free living nitrogen fixers, associative nitrogen fixers and blue green algae or cyanobacteria. But the knowledge and extent of diversity is still limited to explore their full potential. On top of that, the documentation of the available knowledge is also scattered. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria are crucial for the protection of the nitrogen supply for vegetation in the arid region. Since deserts are poor in soil nitrogen, biological nitrogen fixation plays a crucial role in maintaining soil fertility. In this article, an attempt has been made to cover the nature and extent of diversity in nitrogen fixing bacteria in Indian arid zone.

Introduction

Dry-land horticulture has immense potential in providing nutrition rich food, social security and eco-restoration for the inhabitants of desert or rainfed and tribal land-areas of the north-western parts of India. Most of the recent past advances in Indian Horticulture are with production technology for favorable agro-climate, however, the vast and diverse land-scape of hot desert, arid, semiarid and tribal area is yet not getting logical thought for resource based horticultural development. The native crop–plants both annual and perennial are equally playing vital role for food, fodder as well income especially in the hot arid and sem-arid areas of Rajasthan where animal husbandry is also an integral component of the farming system. The monsoon supported arid zone crop-plants are drought tolerant and even the harvest failure in kharif season/ conventional cropping is very high and it is estimated 50–60% in most of the years only because of uncertainty in rain’s pattern. Based on my research experience and SWOT analysis over 25 years, it is accomplished that this hot arid zone has excellent horticultural potential with wide and varied opportunities of crop production, utilization of resources and eco-restoration (Samadia, 2016).

Dragon fruit, commonly known as pitaya/pitahya (Hylocereus sp.) is a  climbing perennial cacti belonging to the Cactaceae family and the subfamily Cactoidea of the tribe Cactea (Raveh et al., 1993). It is a perennial climbing cactus plant native to tropical areas of North, Central and South America. Main countries growing dragon fruit are Vietnam, Colombia, Mexico, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Thailand and Taiwan. Cultivation also occurs in Australia, Israel and Reunion Island. The European Union and Asia, especially China are the largest import markets of dragon fruits (Vinas et al., 2012).

Agricultural land drainage is adopted for removal of excess surface and subsurface water, either from irrigation or rainfall in order to improve the profitability of land use.  Drainage also plays a role in removal of salts from the root zone. Therefore, land drainage is closely linked to irrigation in arid and semi arid regions. India has a long history of practicing irrigation and drainage in its semi arid irrigated regions. During the ancient times in the Indus Valley dams and drainage system were built for cultivation of different crops. The earlier experience of drainage was more concerned with surface drainage because from time immemorial India has been experiencing floods of varying magnitudes.

Importance

Drought is a climatic anomaly characterized by deficient supply of moisture, which may result from sub-normal, untimely and unevenly distributed rainfall. Among the various hazards of nature, drought is one of the major disasters because it brings innumerable miseries to the mankind. Almost every year some part or the other of the country suffers from such calamities. Drought is a recurring phenomena and its occurrence cannot be avoided. However, its impact can be minimized through application of science and technology by developing drought management plans.

The world’s drylands include hyper-arid, arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas where rainfall is highly scanty and variable. Droughts are common in areas / zones where water is the principal limiting factor for agriculture (https:// www.fao.org/3/t0122e/t0122e03.htm) . Dryland soils are characterized by low levels of moisture, organic matter, and biological activity, consequently such soils are very poor in fertility devoid of plant nutrients. When, these soils suffer further degradation in fertility, resulting in erosion, desertification, and salinization when crops are grown on such soils inappropriately without any scientific basis. However, the major factor limiting agricultural production on drylands is the lack of adequate moisture for crop growth or drought.

Drought is a situation when the demand for water is much greater than the availability of water. Drought is a creeping phenomenon and it is experienced only after it has set in. The scarcity of water compared to demand will have greater impact on every activity of human life including failure of crops, food shortages, decline in ground water table, drying tanks, lakes or reservoirs, acute shortage of drinking water for humans and livestock shortage for cattle etc.

Drought will have very serious impact on economy of households as well as that of nation. There are five different types of droughts depending upon the nature of shortage of water

10.1 Meteorological Drought

Meteorological drought occurs when the water received through rainfall during a given period is much less than long period average rainfall of the area. The meteorological drought is associated with either failure of rain or due to long gap between the successive rainfall events. In India, meteorological drought occurs due to failure of south west monsoon or long breaks in south west monsoon rainfall. In Tamil Nadu the drought occurs due to failure of north east monsoon rainfall during months of October to December.

Unlike hazards with clear event boundaries, drought manifests across diverse spatial and temporal scales and impacts nearly every facet of the environment and human activity. This chapter introduces the essential concepts and methodologies underpinning this critical field, highlighting the remarkable breadth required to capture the full picture of drought conditions. • The scope of drought monitoring is inherently vast. Geographically, it spans from tracking localized water stress affecting a single farm or watershed to assessing conditions across entire regions, nations, and continents. Temporally, monitoring efforts must consider short-term deficits unfolding over weeks or months (critical for agriculture) as well as long-term hydrological imbalances developing over seasons, years, or even decades (impacting reservoirs and groundwater). Understanding current conditions crucially relies on comparing them against a deep historical context, requiring decades of baseline data

Drought is a complex and multifaceted issue that affects various aspects of the environment, economy, and society. Its far-reaching consequences underscore the need for a comprehensive and collective approach to mitigate its impacts. 2.1 Drought Prone Area Delineation Drought-prone area delineation involves using scientific criteria like low and erratic rainfall, groundwater potential and agricultural indicators to identify regions susceptible to drought. Modern methods use GIS (Geographic Information Systems) to integrate data from satellite imagery, weather patterns, soil conditions, and vegetation to precisely map drought-vulnerable zones. This spatial analysis allows for targeted interventions such as improved water management techniques and sustainable agricultural practices in the most affected areas. Here are some additional details on the universal nature of drought and the benefits of a global response:

Drought Early Warning Systems (DEWS) form the essential foundation for effective and proactive drought management strategies. These systems are crucial in facilitating a fundamental shift from reactive approaches, where responses are implemented after the onset of a crisis, to proactive risk reduction measures that aim to anticipate and mitigate the adverse effects of drought before they fully materialize. By providing timely and accurate information about impending drought conditions, DEWS empower governments, communities, and individuals to make informed decisions and take preemptive actions, thereby minimizing the potential economic, social, and ecosystem losses associated with these events (Fig.6.1). Recognizing the risks posed by drought in a timely manner is of paramount importance for ensuring an effective and comprehensive response that can alleviate suffering and reduce overall vulnerability. The implementation of robust drought early warning systems plays a critical role in minimizing the negative consequences of drought and building longterm resilience to this recurring natural hazard.

This chapter, “Droughts and Livestock Production,” delves into the intricate relationship between these two critical elements, exploring the multifaceted challenges and consequences that drought poses to livestock farming across diverse geographical contexts The chapter will examine how water scarcity, a hallmark of drought, disrupts the delicate balance of feed availability, animal health, and overall productivity within livestock systems. The 21st century has ushered in an era of unprecedented drought challenges, with far-reaching implications for global ecosystems, economies, and human societies. The increased frequency, severity, and duration of droughts worldwide have pushed water resources, agricultural systems, and communities to the brink, underscoring the pressing need for comprehensive understanding and proactive management. • One of the most striking aspects of modern droughts is their capacity to affect vast geographic areas, transcending national borders and impacting multiple sectors simultaneously. The 2012 drought in the United States, for instance, affected over 80% of the country, leading to significant economic losses in agriculture and beyond. Similarly, the 2018 Cape Town water crisis brought the city to the edge of “Day Zero,” where the taps would run dry, highlighting the devastating potential of droughts on urban water systems. • The impacts of droug

Agroforestry being old as an art and new in its scientific terms has been gaining importance in the modern era due to shift of world from technology to nature in search of resilient way of sustaining livelihood (Dutta et al., 2023, Sharma et al., 2023 Bishaw et al., 2022, Agnoletti et al., 2022). The simplicity of the agroforestry system is the flagship reason of its widespread applicability and reliability in agricultural domains. There has been change in the world perspective regarding the nature and natural resources in recent times. Although there has been forest over 31 per cent of the world’s total geographical area (FAO and UNEP, 2022) but the stabilization of ecosystem and sustainable development is difficult without subsequent interaction between the tree, crop and livestock component on farm lands, being collectively called as agroforestry.

The concept of climate-resilient agriculture encompasses a range of approaches, including climate-smart agriculture, conservation agriculture, and agroforestry. These approaches recognize that agricultural development and growth are inextricably linked to climate change, and that farmers, policymakers, and other stakeholders must work together to promote climate-resilient agriculture practices. The dynamics of development and growth engineering in the context of climate-resilient agriculture are complex and multifaceted. They involve understanding the interactions between climate change, agricultural productivity, and rural livelihoods, as well as the role of institutions, policies, and technologies in promoting climate-resilient agriculture practices. Several driving factors are influencing the dynamic development of climate-resilient agriculture (Fig. 7.1). These include:
Increased awareness of climate change impacts on agriculture, leading to growing demand for climate-resilient agriculture practices.
• Advances in climate information and early warning systems, enabling farmers and policymakers to make more informed decisions.
• Growing recognition of the importance of soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem services in promoting climate-resilient agriculture.
• Increased investment in climate-resilient agriculture research and development, leading to the development of new technologies and practices.
• Effective governance for growth is critical for promoting climate-resilient agriculture. This requires:
• Strong institutions and policies that support climate-resilient agriculture, including laws, regulations, and incentives.
• Inclusive coordination and collaboration among stakeholders, including farmers, researchers, policymakers, and private sector actors.
• Investment in climate information and early warning systems, as well as climate-resilient agriculture research and development.
• Support for capacity building and extension services, enabling farmers to access and adopt climate-resilient agriculture practices.
• Agricultural insurance and risk management mechanisms, enabling farmers to manage climate-related risks and uncertainties. By understanding the driving factors and governance requirements for climate-resilient agriculture, policymakers, researchers, and practitioners can work together to promote dynamic development and growth in the agricultural sector, enhancing food security, sustainability, and climate resilience.

Dystopian literature has emerged as a powerful genre for exploring societal anxieties, particularly in the context of environmental degradation, social inequity, and unsustainable practices. In recent years, these narratives have become increasingly relevant as global discussions around sustainable development intensify. Dystopian works like The Hunger Games by Collins (2008) and The Road by McCarthy (2006) are not only popular cultural phenomena but also significant texts that offer critical reflections on the consequences of unsustainable practices. As Suzanne Collins writes in The Hunger Games, “Destroying things is much easier than making them,” a sentiment that captures the destructive trajectory of unsustainable practices that both novels explore. This paper aims to examine how dystopian narratives, with a particular focus on The Hunger Games and The Road, contribute to sustainable development discourse. By analyzing the themes of resource depletion, environmental control, and social inequality, this study situates these narratives within eco-critical and dystopian studies frameworks, offering a deeper understanding of how literature shapes perceptions of sustainability. Thus, in this paper, an attempt has been made to explore how dystopian literature reflects concerns about sustainability, encourages critical thinking about the future of the environment and society, and emphasizes the importance of equitable, sustainable practices for survival.

Early Warning Systems (EWS) have evolved from simple, rudimentary alert mechanisms into complex, multi-hazard, data-driven networks that play a critical role in disaster risk management and climate adaptation. In today’s rapidly changing climate, timely and accurate information is essential not only for saving lives but also for protecting livelihoods, reducing economic losses, and enhancing community resilience. The application of EWS varies significantly by region, geography, type of disaster, and across diverse sectors such as agriculture, aquaculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, fisheries, and allied sciences. Global initiatives - led by organizations such as the United Nations - aim to ensure that every person, particularly the most vulnerable, is equipped with lifesaving early warnings by 2027 (Fig.11.1). Complementary partnerships, such as that between the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), further strengthen these systems by integrating cutting edge forecasting with actionable advisories for critical sectors. A particularly groundbreaking effort is the United Nations’ Early Warnings for All (EW4ALL) initiative, launched in 2022 by UN Secretary General António Guterres, which seeks to provide comprehensive early warning coverage for hazardous weather, water, and climate events to every person on Earth. Underpinning these global efforts is Weather Intelligence - a transformative approach that harnesses advanced data analytics, real time monitoring, and machine learning techniques to refine forecasts and deliver precise, context specific alerts. By integrating diverse data streams and tailoring

The dynamic layer surrounding the earth above its surface containing various gases, moisture, aerosols, etc. is called atmosphere. Atmosphere can be defined as the gaseous envelope surrounding the earth. It is retained by earth’s gravity.

The atmosphere protects life on earth by absorbing ultraviolet solar radiation, warming the surface through heat retention and reducing temperature extremes between day and night. The common name given to the atmospheric gases used in breathing and photosynthesis is air. The atmosphere has a mass of about 5.15 × 10¹⁸ kg, three quarters of which is within about 11 km of the surface. The atmosphere becomes thinner and thinner with increasing altitude, with no definite boundary between the atmosphere and outer space. The imaginary ‘Karman line’ lies at an altitude of 100 km above the earth’s sea level, and commonly represents the boundary between the earth’s atmosphere and outer space. The study of earth’s atmosphere and its processes is called atmospheric science or ‘aerology’.

This chapter presents a case of Jind region of Haryana State, Northern India which had experienced mild tremors of ~ 3 on Richter scale magnitudes in the recent past with a gap of 1 to 2 years. Rejuvenation of the lineament controlled volcanoseismic process is identified as the probable cause of these tremors. This chapter describes seismotectonic characters, micro and mega seismicity of the area and few mitigation measures.

INTRODUCTION

The Haryana state consists of Delhi Super Group (DSG), Indo- Gangetic alluvial plain in the form of alluvial fan, sand dune, alluvium of Ambala, Yamuna and Ghagghar rivers and Siwalik Super Group (SSG) in the southern, central and northern parts respectively (Fig.1). The study area Jind is located in the central part of Haryana and comprises 200 – 600 m thick Indo-Gangetic alluvium. The alluvium is of Quaternary Period and composes alternating layers of clay, silt, sand and kankar. The Bhiwani and Tosham areas, located south of Jind, show the occurrence of Neoproterozoic granite and rhyolite of Malani Igneous Suite (MIS). The rocks occur in the form of ring structure/ring dyke on the hillocks amidst the alluvium. The metasediments (mica schist and quartzite) of Delhi Super Group are underling MIS at Tosham (located at 70 km southwest of Jind). As Jind region experiences mild tremors and there is no previous published work pertaining to the geology, tectonics and seismicity of the area the chapter records these aspects for better understanding and mitigation of earthquake hazard.

Earth’s atmosphere is a dynamic and complex system that plays a crucial role in supporting life as we know it. This chapter explores into the fascinating world of this gaseous envelope that surrounds our planet, exploring its composition, structure, and the processes that drive both our daily weather and long-term climate. It includes:
• Composition and Structure: It will begin by examining the unique blend of gases that make up the atmosphere, including nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and trace amounts of others. It will also be explored how the atmosphere is structured into distinct layers (troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere), each with its own characteristics and role.
• Weather: Weather refers to the short-term conditions of the atmosphere at a specific time and place. We’ll discuss the key elements of weather, such as temperature, pressure, humidity, wind, and precipitation, and how they interact to create the ever-changing weather patterns we experience.
• Climate: In contrast to weather, climate describes the long-term average of atmospheric conditions in a particular region. We’ll investigate the factors that influence climate, including latitude, altitude, proximity to oceans, and atmospheric circulation patterns. We’ll also explore the different climate zones found across the globe.
• Interconnectedness: A key focus of this chapter understands how weather and climate are interconnected. Daily weather patterns are influenced by the same fundamental atmospheric processes that shape long-term climate. For example, the way the sun’s energy interacts with the atmosphere drives both daily temperature variations and global climate patterns.

An earthen dam is an embankment constructed primarily from compacted soil to impound runoff and create a reservoir. Such dams support irrigation, water supply, groundwater recharge, hydropower generation, and flood moderation. Their successful performance depends on suitable site conditions, proper materials, adequate compaction, controlled seepage, stable slopes, and safe disposal of surplus water. This chapter introduces the advantages and limitations of earthen dams, construction materials, types of embankment sections, and their principal components. Particular attention is given to cut-offs, impervious cores, casing or shells, foundations, filters, drainage systems, spillways, outlets, slope protection, and common causes of deterioration or structural failure.

This chapter is an attempt to introduce basic facts about earthquake generation and the role of earthquakes in triggering secondary geohazards. Earthquake, unlike manyother geohazards is yet to be fully understood towards occurrence and magnitude for better mitigation measures. Though unpredictibility of this hazard makes it dangerous, earthquakes seldom kill lives. Instead, poor ability of man-made structures against ground-shaking waves has been the real cause of life loss and damage to property in most of the earthquake incidences. Furthermore, earthquakes generate secondary geohazards such as landslide, failure of dams and reservoirs, etc. Thus, earthquake, as a natural hazard has its own characteristic way of potential impactand hence classifying vulnerability of different regions and creating awareness on potential impact among common public is essential.

INTRODUCTION

The term “earthquake” denotes “shaking/vibration/trembling/ quivering/shuddering/ wobbling of Earth”. Earthquake is the quickest and most unpredictable natural hazard. It is nothing but a series of suddenly generated elastic waves occurring in the Earth due to internal and/or external causes from shallow (few kilometers) to about 700 kilometers depth. It is a form of motion of wave energy transmitted through the surface layer (crust) of the Earth. One generalization that can be made out of scientific and mainstream media information about earthquakes is that, “earthquakes seldom kill; but the associated phenomena such as landslides, flooding, volcanic eruptions and collapse of natural and man-made structures cause the real damage to lives and property”. This chapter is an attempt to describe the basic elements of earthquakes and few mitigation measures.

Introduction

Earthquakes are the most destructive among all the natural hazards. Most of the time, they occur without any warning, which makes them most feared and unpredictable natural phenomena. Globally, on an average two earthquakes of magnitude 8 are known to occur every year. Some of the countries like Japan, China and United States have suffered several damaging earthquakes in the past. India has also experienced a number of high intensity earthquakes in the recent past and more than 650 earthquakes of magnitude >5.0 have been reported in India since 1890. Sixty-nine earthquakes in Delaware (U.S.A.) have been documented or suspected since 1871. Refer to Baxter (2000) for more details about the DGS Seismic Network and for documentation of earthquakes. In the 1930s Charles Richter developed a magnitude scale (Richter scale) which was an objective way of discriminating between large and small shocks using the seismic wave amplitude recorded by seismographs (Richter, 1958).

Dyes are compounds after addition to a substrate, for a moment give it a colorthrough a process that modifies the colored substance’s crystal structure (Bafanaet al., 2011). Such varieties of compounds with significant coloring capacityare widely employed in the textile, pharmaceutical, food, photographic, andpaper industries (Zollinger et al., 1987). Dyes can adhere to suitable surfacesthrough methods such as dissolving, forming covalent bonds, complexing withsalts or metals, physically adsorbing, or being mechanically retained (Kirkand Othmer, 2004). The chemical structure and application of dyes determine
their classification. The dye color is produced by a collection of atoms calledchromophores. Chromophore centres, which are responsible for color, consistof various functional groups like azo, anthraquinone,methine, nitro, arylmethane, carbonyl, and others. Additionally, substituents that either donateor withdraw electrons to enhance or create the color of these chromophoresare called auxochromes. Common examples of auxochromes include amine,carboxyl, sulfonate, and hydroxyl groups. There are three methods for dyingtextile materials: batch, continuous, and semi-continuous. Thekind of materialincluding yarn, fabric, fiber, clothing, and fabric structure as well as the generalfiber size of the dye lot, type, and quality standards of the dyed fabric, all playa role in determining the dyeing method used. Among these techniques, theprocess called the batch procedure is the most frequently employed for dyeingtextile materials. (Ogugbue et al., 2011).

Since many decades environmentalists have warned of perils of chemicalised sports grounds, golf courses and cricket fields. They warn that our health is inextricably linked to the widespread use of toxic chemicals and also complain about the non-availability of safe alternatives.
