Introduction

Microbial diversity is one of the main factors characterizing natural ecosystems; soil is considered one of the best storehouses of useful microorganisms in the world. Although the role of most of these microorganisms is still unknown, scientific progress is providing a better comprehension of the specific ecological functions of soil microorganisms (Ahmad, I.et al., 2008). Microorganisms in the rhizosphere soil play a key role in maintaining the soil fertility (Yadav et al. 2015), which is key for successful natural crop production to meet the increasing global organic food demand. Soil acts as a reservoir of air, water, and nutrients that is essential for plant growth. Only a few grams of soil contain hundred million to billion microorganisms. Bacteria are the most abundant microbes in soil followed by fungi; however, the actinomycetes are ranges in between bacteria and fungi. Other microbes that are found in smaller numbers are algae, cyanobacteria, protozoa, and nematodes. Soil gives the necessary support for anchorage to plant roots (Yadav et al. 2012; Bhaduri et al. 2015).

Climate change is threatening food security globally. Countries like India are more vulnerable in view of the tropical monsoon climate and poor coping capacity of the small and marginal farmers. Several agricultural practices like indiscriminate use of agro-chemicals and crop residue burning contribute to emission of greenhouse gasses leading to warming of the atmosphere. Sequestration of carbon both in the vegetation and soil is the most effective means of mitigating GHG emissions. There are several strategies of soil carbon sequestration which can be adopted at farm level. These include: conservation agriculture, biomass recycling, crop rotations and use of organic amendments. One of the recent developments is the conversion of crop residue biomass into biochar and using the char as a soil amendment rather than directly using the crop residues. Several studies show that biochar has a long life in soil and is more effective in sequestering carbon besides improving other soil properties like water holding capacity and nutrient availability. In Indian conditions, there is an immense scope for converting millions of tonnes of crop residues which are not used as fodder into biochar and use the same for enriching soil carbon.

Energy Consumption is considered as the energy used to do any task in any kind of a simple domestic building to a complicated manufacturing industry. For instance, in a household, energy is consumed in the form of electricity used to run an Air Conditioner to make a room cool, gas used to cook a dish etc. In a car industry, energy is consumed in the form of electricity to manufacture a car part. In the transport sector, petrol or diesel or gasoline is used as a run a car or bike or other vehicles.

Types of Biomedical Waste

1. Infectious waste: waste contaminated with blood and other bodily fluids (e.g. from discarded diagnostic samples), cultures and stocks of infectious agents from laboratory work (e.g. waste from autopsies and infected animals from laboratories), or waste from patients with infections (e.g. swabs, bandages and disposable medical devices)

2. Pathological waste: human tissues, organs or fluids, body parts and contaminated animal dead bodies

Since the Green Revolution of 1960s, Indian agriculture have been highly dependent on chemical fertilizers, exploitation of ground water for irrigation, intensive tillage etc. to raise the food grain production of the country towards ensuring food security for all. The consequences of these practices resulted in declined and degraded soil health, soil erosion and dried up water capillaries - ultimately posing threat to the sustainability of the future production. This invites the need of affordable changes in the agricultural practices without hampering the production. Conservation Agriculture, as put forward by FAO, is a set of sustainable agricultural practices, aims to conserve, improve and make efficient use of natural resources through management of soil, water and biological resources in aid with external inputs. The three basic principles of Conservation Agriculture include - minimum soil disturbances, permanent soil cover and crop rotation or crop diversification.

Agriculture is a vital sector in the world economy, as it helps to reduce poverty and promote sustainable development, especially in developing countries. However, agriculture also faces challenges such as increasing productivity and reducing environmental impacts. Therefore, new technologies and methods are needed to improve agricultural practices. One of these methods is precision agriculture (PA), which is based on the principle of sustainable agriculture and healthy food production. PA is a science that uses high technology sensors and analysis tools to improve crop yields and support management decisions. PA is a new concept that aims to increase production, reduce labor time, and optimize the management of fertilizers and irrigation processes.

Nanotechnology is a scientific and technological field that manipulates matter at the nanoscale to create, design, characterize, and use structures, systems, and devices with novel properties (Sattler 2016). Nanoparticles are one of the most important products of nanotechnology, as they exhibit different features from their bulk counterparts due to their size and shape (Sabir et al., 2014). Nanoparticles have applications in various disciplines, such as materials science, medicine, agriculture, physics, and chemistry.

Nanofertilizers are products of nanotechnology that are created or modified from conventional fertilizers, bulk fertilizer materials, or plant extracts. They use different methods such as chemical, physical, mechanical, or biological processes to produce nanosized particles that can enhance soil fertility, crop productivity, and quality (KhetiGaadi 2022). Nanofertilizers have a size range of 0.1–100 nm, which is similar to the size of plant cell wall (20 nm), making them easier to be absorbed by plants (Tiwari 2022).

Clouds play very important role on weather and climate. The formation of clouds takes place when water condenses in the sky. Clouds are visible accumulation of tiny water droplets and ice crystals in the Earth’s atmosphere. The moisture is always present in the atmosphere though it may not be visible. Clouds form when air becomes cooler until the water vapour present in it condenses to liquid form. The condensation over oceans occurs around solid particles like salt, dust, smoke etc. suspended in the atmosphere. The type of clouds depends upon temperature and wind. The clouds are classified based on physical appearance and the height at which clouds are formed (Fig. 7.1).

The division of earth’s climates into worldwide system of contiguous regions, each one of which is defined by relative homogeneity of the climatic elements (Fig. 9.1)

9.1 Koppen’s Classification

Koppen’s climatic classification describes 5 major groups of climate A, B, C, D and E which are sub-divided into a total of 14 individual climate types, along with a special category of Highland (H) climate.

A - Tropical: Average temperature of coldest month is 18°C or more.

B - Dry climate: Potential evapotranspiration exceeds precipitation.

C - Warm temperature: The average temperature of the coldest month (of the middle latitudes) is higher than -3°C but below 18°C.

From the beginning of 18th century, the human activities started increasing gradually. Industrialization, increased use of petroleum products, deforestation, mining and increased use of chemicals have contributed to the pollution of natural resource base. The proportion of gases such as carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane etc started increasing in the atmosphere and more heat is getting trapped in the atmosphere leading to rise in atmospheric temperatures (Fig. 15.1).

The changes in atmosphere temperatures have led to changes in weather patterns. This changes in weather pattern triggered extreme situations like heat wave, cold wave, severe cyclonic activity, strong winds and hail storms, f loods and droughts of greater intensity creating new records.

Arsenic contamination of groundwater is a form of groundwater pollution that is often due to naturally occurring high concentrations of arsenic in deeper levels of groundwater. The Ganges Delta’s usage of deep tube wells for water delivery has raised awareness of the issue because it has led to widespread arsenic poisoning in significant numbers of people. During the weathering of rocks and minerals, which is followed by subsequent leaching and runoff, arsenic (As) is released into the soil and groundwater. Additionally, anthropogenic sources can transfer it into the soil and groundwater. Six West Bengal districts with a combined area of 34000 km2 and a population of 30 million have been determined to have groundwater levels of arsenic over the WHO maximum allowable limit of 0.05 mg l1. (Alam et al.,2002)

At present, 37 administrative blocks by the side of the river Ganga and adjoining areas are affected. Areas affected by arsenic contamination in groundwater are all located in the upper delta plain and are mostly in the abandoned meander belt. More than 800 000 people from 312 villages/wards are drinking arsenic-contaminated water and amongst them, at least 175 000 people show arsenical skin lesions. Thousands of tube well water in these six districts have been analysed for arsenic species. Hair, nails, scales, urine, and liver tissue analyses show elevated concentrations of arsenic in people drinking arsenic-contaminated water for a longer period. Arsenic comes from a geological source. Only a few soil strata have high arsenic contents, which are determined to be linked to iron-pyrites according to investigations of bore hole silt. Arsenical skin lesions in various areas cause a variety of societal issues. (Das et al.,1996)

World population is increasing and currently stands at 8.2 Billion as on 2025. Food security of population of any country is becoming a challenging task and the entire population depends on the available national resources. The importance of scientific community in securing foods for everybody was felt necessary and it was expressed that there is a huge herculean task to ensure food for everybody. Farming community and fruit growers across the globe were engaged in serious efforts to produce fruits of good quality. The necessity to develop advanced technologies for nutritious foods was thus given national importance not only for food security but also of nutritional security. The sincere scientific efforts to develop recent innovative technologies to support fruit production even at harsh soils and environmental conditions are praiseworthy. Farmers, stakeholders, policy planners and technology developers have been devoted to achieve the target of Sustainable Developmental Goals. The target of United Nation’s 2030 to eradicate poverty and eradication of malnutrition should be achieved sustainably. People across nations are working devotedly to achieve the target. However, climatic changes have been significantlyaffecting the food production to food security across nations. Decadal information suggested the adverse impact of climates on the fruit production. Recent changes in weather extremisms had also affect harshly on the food production to supply chain. Thus, the role of scientific community to coup up the environmental hazards and to sustain fruit production becomes a reality. In this context, agroadvisory services plays significant role to support farming community and fruit growers to adopt time bound managemental practices. The ultimate aim of these services is to improve the orchard soil and tree health condition, enhance factor productivity vis-à-vis profitability and precise use of available natural resources. Quantification of variability in environmental indicators, soil and tree interactions were felt necessary for formulating effective policy plan (Malhotra, 2017). Adak et al. (2022) advocated for foliage spraying of 1 per cent zinc sulphate on mango cv. Dashehari to enhance yield and nutrient richness in fruit pulp.

Introduction
Horticulture crops hold significant importance for their economic, nutritional, environmental, and aesthetic contributions. They contribute to agricultural GDP, create employment opportunities, and provide income for farmers and other stakeholders along the value chain. Horticultural crops often have highvalue market demand, leading to increased profitability for farmers and rural communities. The horticultural crops, including fruits, vegetables, nuts, and medicinal, spices are rich sources of essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. They contribute to a balanced and nutritious diet, promoting good
health and preventing various diseases. Consumption of horticultural crops is linked to reduced risks of chronic diseases, including heart disease and certain types of cancer. These crops have environmental benefits. They contribute to biodiversity conservation by providing habitats for various species and supporting beneficial insects and pollinators. Additionally, horticultural practices such as agroforestry, crop diversification, and organic farming methods can enhance soil health, reduce erosion, promote water conservation, and mitigate climate change impacts. Adak and Pandey (2018) emphasised soil management of horticultural crops for attaining food and nutritional security of farm women. Babu et al. (2022) explained scientific interventions for enhancing productivity and profitability of farmers’ engaged in horticultural sector while Gundappa et al. (2016c) recommended management protocols for effective controls of mango hoppers to growers. Even, digital solutions are now-a-days is being tried to improve economic prosperity of fruit growers (Verma and Adak, 2021). Horticulture crops contribute to food security by diversifying thefood supply. They provide an array of options beyond staple crops, ensuring a varied and nutritious diet for individuals and communities.

Mushrooms are a nutritious and versatile food commodity that has gained significant importance in India in recent years. With a growing demand for healthy and organic food options, mushroom production has emerged as a lucrative venture for Indian farmers (Fig. 9.1).
• India is home to a diverse range of wild and cultivated mushroom species, with over 200 varieties found across the country. The majority of mushroom production in India is concentrated in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh.
• Mushroom production in India has witnessed significant growth over the past few decades, driven by advances in technology, improved farming practices, and increasing demand. According to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, the country produces over 1.5 million metric tons of mushrooms annually, with a value of over `3,000 crores.
 • Mushrooms are an important crop in India due to their high nutritional value, medicinal properties, and economic significance. They are an excellent source of protein, fiber, and various essential vitamins and minerals. Mushrooms are also rich in antioxidants and have been found to have potential health benefits, including reducing inflammation, improving cardiovascular health, and boosting the immune system.

Resource: Anything we obtain from our surroundings in order to fulfill our needs and wants. A natural resource is any substance or energy that comes from the environment and is utilized by all living things, including humans. Examples of natural resources include air, water, soil, minerals, plants, and wildlife.

A biomass gasifier is an advanced device designed to convert solid biomass materials-such as wood chips, crop residues, saw-dust, coconut shells, and other organic matter-into a combustible gas mixture known as producer gas. The conversion process, known as gasification, is a thermo-chemical process that takes place in a controlled environment with limited oxygen. Unlike complete combustion, gasification allows only partial oxidation of biomass, producing a gas rich in carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen (H2), methane (CH4), and nitrogen (N2). This gas mixture can be used as a fuel for internal combustion engines, power generation, cooking, or industrial heating applications.
Principle of Gasification
Gasification involves a sequence of four key thermo-chemical reactions within the reactor, occurring at temperatures ranging from 800–1000°C:
1. Drying Zone: Moisture present in the biomass is evaporated due to the rising heat.
H2O (liquid) ? H2O (vapor)
2. Pyrolysis Zone: Biomass decomposes in the absence of oxygen to form volatile gases, tar, and solid char.
Biomass ? Char + Volatile gases + Tar
3. Oxidation Zone: A small amount of air or oxygen is introduced to partially combust the biomass, generating heat to sustain the process.

The ancient partnership between agriculture and weather forecasting, initially rooted in observational knowledge and rudimentary tools, has been fundamental to sustaining human populations for millennia. Traditional agricultural meteorology has diligently documented climate patterns, analyzed weather phenomena, and established empirical relationships between meteorological variables and crop yields. This foundational knowledge remains invaluable. However, the stark realities of the 21st century, dominated by the accelerating and often unpredictable impacts of climate change, necessitate a radical departure from conventional thinking. The comfortable reliance on historical data and linear projections is increasingly inadequate in a world characterized by unprecedented c limate variability, intensifying extreme weather events (as you‘ve extensively researched), and the urgent need for enhanced food security for a growing global population.
• The limitations of traditional agricultural meteorology become increasingly apparent when confronted with the complexities of climate change. For instance, relying solely on historical rainfall patterns for irrigation planning becomes precarious when those patterns are drastically altered by shifting climate regimes. Traditional pest and disease forecasting models, often based on established temperature and humidity thresholds, may fail to accurately predict outbreaks as these thresholds themselves are disrupted by climate anomalies. The need for real-time, localized, and predictive insights into the dynamic interplay between the atmosphere and agricultural systems has never been more critical.
• This is where the transformative power of emerging technologies steps in. The next generation of agricultural meteorologists stands at a pivotal juncture, tasked with leveraging advancements in diverse technological domains to revolutionize the field. Consider the sheer volume of data now available from a constellation of sources – weather satellites providing high-resolution global coverage, dense networks of ground-based sensors capturing hyperlocal environmental conditions, agricultural drones offering detailed field-level monitoring, and IoT devices collecting real-time soil and plant health parameters. This deluge of information dwarfs anything

The soil consists of many solid particles of different sizes and is capable of absorbing and retaining water in the soil within certain limits when water is received through either from precipitation or by irrigation. The water that is held in the soil is called soil water (Fig.4.1). It can exist also in the form of water vapour as well. The crop production depends upon the soil water. All the water that is present in the soil may not be available for plants.
The water availability to the plants from the soil depends upon some physical properties of the soil as well as on the physical processes that govern the existence of water in the soil. Therefore, it is necessary to understand about the relationships that govern the water availability in the soil as explained in the following text-
4.1. Energy Concept of Soil Water
Soil water energy concept is all about potential energy, gravitational potential, osmatic potential, pressure potential energies.
4.1.1. Soil Water Energy: The total energy state of soil water is defined by its
equivalent potential energy as determined by various forces acting on the water per unit quantity. Different energies are involved including kinetic and potential energy.

Insolation is a term that might sound abstract but is fundamentally the driving force behind nearly all physical processes on Earth, including those within our precious aquatic environments. In this chapter, we will unravel the journey of solar energy from the vast expanse of space to the surfaces of our oceans, lakes, and rivers, and understand its profound influence on the life within. For you, as future professionals in fisheries and aquaculture, grasping the concept of insolation is paramount. The amount of solar radiation reaching a water body dictates its surface temperature, influences the rate of photosynthesis by aquatic plants and algae (the base of many aquatic food webs), affects water stratification, and even plays a role in phenomena like ice formation and melting. Think about it: the warmth of a lake on a sunny day, the intensity of light penetrating the surface waters, the seasonal changes in algal blooms – all are directly linked to the amount and intensity of solar radiation received. Understanding insolation allows us to begin to explain why some aquatic environments are more productive than others, why water temperatures vary geographically and seasonally, and how changes in solar energy input (whether natural or human-induced) can ripple through entire aquatic ecosystems.

Clouds, those ever-present features of our sky, are more than just aesthetically pleasing; they are fundamental components of Earth’s weather and climate systems. This chapter, “Cloud Formation and Classification,” will embark on a journey to understand the fascinating processes that lead to their creation and the systematic ways in which they are categorized. The essential ingredients for cloud formation are the presence of water vapor in the atmosphere, the availability of condensation or ice nuclei, and the crucial mechanism of air cooling. We will look into how rising air parcels cool adiabatically, reaching saturation and allowing water vapor to condense or deposit into the myriad forms we recognize as clouds. Following the understanding of their genesis, we will navigate the internationally recognized system of cloud classification. This system, primarily based on a cloud’s altitude, appearance, and the processes that formed it, provides a common language for meteorologists and observers worldwide. We will learn to identify the main cloud types – high, mid-level, low, and vertically developing – and their associated characteristics, from the wispy cirrus to the towering cumulonimbus. Furthermore, we will touch upon the significance of different cloud types in indicating current weather conditions and forecasting future weather. The appearance and evolution of clouds can offer valuable clues about atmospheric stability, moisture content, and the likelihood of precipitation. In the end of the chapter, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of how clouds form, the diverse array of cloud types that grace our skies, and their importance in the broader context of atmospheric science. Clouds are visible masses of tiny water droplets or ice crystals suspended in the Earth’s atmosphere. These droplets or crystals are so small and light that

These aren’t just pleasant onshore or offshore flows of air. Land and sea breezes represent a daily cycle of wind patterns driven by the fundamental difference in how land and water absorb and release heat. This seemingly simple process has far-reaching consequences for the nearshore marine environment, influencing everything from the subtle shifts in water temperature and salinity to the crucial distribution of nutrients that underpin the entire marine food web.
For those of you who will be involved in the intricate world of aquaculture, the art and science of fishing, or the vital task of managing our precious marine resources, understanding the dynamics of land and sea breezes will provide you with a powerful lens through which to interpret the daily and localized changes within coastal aquatic ecosystems. This knowledge can inform decisions about optimal fishing times, the placement of aquaculture farms, and the potential impacts of environmental changes.

The practical schedule to be implemented as per the syllabus prescribed for the course is reorganized in a logical sequence. The teachers offering the course is required to collect all the material required for effective practical training before the semester starts. In case of measurements made and observations taken, the students should be rigorous trained to understand significance of observation made and its practical utility (Fig. 15.1). The students are required to learn how to interpret and use the information contained in all products generated by meteorological services in fisheries and aquaculture.

In today’s rapidly evolving world, food production is at the confluence of tradition and innovation. While age-old farming practices have sustained civilizations for millennia, the modern era demands an unprecedented level of precision and foresight. Weather intelligence—the practice of integrating detailed meteorological data with advanced analytics and decision support systems— is revolutionizing food production, from agriculture and fisheries to animal husbandry (Fig. 1.1). This chapter lays the foundation for understanding how accurate and timely weather data underpins food security, economic sustainability, and environmental stewardship. It further highlights global themes addressing the growing demand for food in any nation with a burgeoning population, the challenges of climate change, and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events. This introduction also outlines the objectives and structure of this book, which aims to empower decision makers with the knowledge needed to navigate a world where climate and food production are inextricably linked.
1.1 Context & Importance
1.1.1 The Changing Face of Food Production
Food production has always been sensitive to the whims of nature. Historically, farmers relied on folklore, seasonal patterns, and local wisdom to guide planting and harvesting cycles. With growth and development of atmospheric sciences from 19th century, farmers started depending upon weather forecasts in planning and management of agricultural production systems. However, with the advent of climate change, environmental degradation, and increasingly unpredictable

This chapter provides an in-depth exploration of advanced techniques and conceptual frameworks—here termed “Weather Intelligence”—and their potential applications in precision agriculture. Although the term is not yet standardized, it serves as an exploratory framework for integrating advanced forecasting, diverse datasets, and data analytics to capture both natural and anthropogenic influences on weather patterns. The discussion spans crop and livestock production as well as allied sectors such as fisheries, aquaculture, plantations, horticulture, and specialized areas like flower farming. By integrating real-time data from sensors, remote sensing platforms, and historical records, these exploratory systems aim to empower farmers and food producers to optimize irrigation, planting, harvesting, and overall resource management. Agriculture has always depended on weather, yet the rapid pace of climate change and the need for sustainable practices have driven a technological revolution in farm management. In today’s digital age, advanced forecasting techniques and data analytics are converging into a new conceptual framework we call “Weather Intelligence.” Although this term is exploratory and not yet widely adopted, it encapsulates the vision of integrating high-resolution satellite imagery, IoT devices, and machine learning algorithms to forecast local microclimatic conditions with unprecedented accuracy. These forecasts enable proactive adjustments to critical operations—such as irrigation scheduling, planting, and harvesting, thereby mitigating weather-induced risks and enhancing productivity. Moreover, it is increasingly evident that weather patterns are not only shaped by natural phenomena but also by human-induced risks such as wars, conflicts, and environmental abuse. Factors like landfills, water and sea pollution, toxic dumping, and unsustainable industrial practices are altering microclimates around the world. Fossil Fuels like Coal, Coal product, Natural Gas, Petroleum, Crude Oil provide 80% of the world’s energy. However, burning them releases harmful pollutants, including carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and the sulfur oxides, contributing to global warming. To combat this, the World is shifting towards cleaner, renewable energy sources called biofuels. Biofuels are made from organic materials like plants and waste, offering several benefits: Renewable and Sustainable, Less greenhouse gas emissions, non-toxic [6]. Common biofuels include are: Biodiesel, Biogas, Bioethanol. These alternative fuels help reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, mitigating climate change and promoting a healthier environment. Biodiesel replaces fossil-based diesel/petrol made through Trans-esterifi cation process. The benefi ts include clean energy, renewable resources and the domestic production. Generations of biodiesel are: First Generation include Edible crops (Soybean, Corn, Sugarcane). Second Generation includes Non-edible biomass(Straw, Hay). Third Generation include Microalgae (70% yield). Fourth Generation include the genetically modifi ed algae and electro-biofuel. [2] Biodiesel production has changed over time. Initially, edible vegetable oils like soybean, corn, sunfl ower and palm oil were used. However this raised concerns: using valuable farmland for fuel instead of food, competing with food production, weather and soil quality affecting the crop yield , fertilizer use releasing harmful nitrous oxide greenhouse gas. To address these issues, focus shifted to non-edible oils and now Microalgae, offering; sustainable, climate-resilient production, no competition with the food crops, reduced greenhouse gas emission, higher oil yield. Microalgae -based biodiesel is the future providing a cleaner, more effi cient alternative.[4]

The demand for biofuels has been steadily increasing due to environmental concerns, government promotional policies, and technological advancements. The factors driving biofuel demand, current market trends, and future projections are the global demand for biofuels is experiencing rapid growth due to government policies, energy security concerns, and advancements in sustainable biofuel production. As more countries implement biofuel mandates and invest in next-generation biofuels, demand is expected to rise significantly in the coming years, positioning biofuels as a critical component of the global energy transition. Governments worldwide have implemented various policies to promote biofuel production and consumption. These policies aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance energy security, and support rural economies. Ethanol remains the most widely used biofuel, with major producers like the U.S., Brazil, and China increasing production to meet rising demand. The U.S. and Brazil collectively account for over 80% of global ethanol production. Bioethanol production originated in Brazil in the early 20th century, where sugarcane was used to produce ethanol as a fuel additive. However, the United States also played a significant role in the large-scale commercialization of bioethanol, especially from corn, starting in the 1970s during the oil crisis. Brazil remains a global leader in sugarcane-based ethanol, while the U.S. leads in corn-based ethanol production. Biodiesel demand is growing, particularly in the European Union, Indonesia, and Argentina. Indonesia’s B30 program (30% biodiesel blending) has significantly boosted demand. Between 2005 and 2015, the biodiesel production experienced a sevenfold increase and is projected to grow by an additional 35% by 2025 (OECD/ FAO, 2014). Biofuel policies have played a crucial role in shaping the growth of biofuel production worldwide. Since their inception, these policies have provided financial incentives, blending mandates, and research support, which have driven large-scale production. The impact of these policies varies across major biofuelproducing nations, including the United States, Brazil, the European Union, China, and India (Table 1). The U.S. biofuel industry expanded significantly due to the

Sustainability refers to the ability to maintain a balanced and healthy equilibrium by addressing economic, social, and environmental demands over time. Sustainable development is a broad and evolving concept that aims to meet present needs without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to meet theirs. It seeks to balance short-term progress with long-term viability. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, are a set of 17 goals and 169 targets that all UN Member States aim to achieve by 2030. SDG 3, which emphasizes ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages, places a strong focus on health. Within SDG 3, reducing maternal mortality and decreasing neonatal and child mortality are key priorities, represented by Targets 3.1 and 3.2, respectively. The global goal for SDG 3.1 is to lower the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) to fewer than 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030. For individual countries, a supplementary target is set to reduce their national MMR to below 140 per 100,000 live births. A nation’s progress is fundamentally tied to the health and well-being of its mothers, which is a crucial factor in achieving equitable resource distribution, reducing poverty, and promoting sustainable development. Tragically, approximately 536,000 women die each year from maternal health complications, with 99% of these deaths occurring in developing nations. India, contributing about 25% of global maternal deaths, faces a critical challenge, with around 136,000 maternal deaths occurring annually. The country has set an ambitious goal to reduce its MMR to below 100 deaths per 100,000 live births. To address these issues and support sustainability, Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) indicators play an essential role in monitoring maternal and child health (MCH) outcomes. These indicators include measures such as immunization coverage, institutional delivery rates, home delivery rates, and antenatal care coverage. By tracking these metrics policymakers can assess the effectiveness of maternal health services and identify areas that require improvement. Utilizing RCH indicators to inform policies and programs contributes to better health outcomes for mothers and children and helps reduce mortality rates, which aligns with the objectives of SDG 3. Certain regions of India have made notable strides in improving MCH. For example, the northeastern state of Assam saw significant improvements in RCH indicators between 2010 and 2015. During this time, the rate of institutional deliveries increased substantially ensuring more women had access to safe childbirth services. The government has also strengthened maternal health care by implementing various MCH programs, including the RCH initiatives and other flagship schemes.

1. Introduction
Early childhood (0-6 years) is the most important period in a child’s life; it is during this period that the foundations for the child’s cognitive, social, emotional, physical and mental development are laid. As a result, the Ministry of Women and Child Development implemented several programs aimed at the welfare, development and protection of children and pregnant women. One such program is The Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) program, which began on October 2, 1975. In India, ICDS is the most important government intervention for reducing maternal and child malnutrition and it has grown to become the world’s largest program of its kind. The ICDS aims to provide an integrated package of early childhood services in order to lay a solid foundation for the development of the nation’s human resources. The ICDS scheme is intended to be both preventive and developmental in nature. ICDS gives hope to millions of vulnerable women and children by assisting and supporting them during times of food insecurity and rapid growth. Because of its nationwide coverage, this program has all of the necessary structures in place and provides nutritional safety for the most vulnerable and poorest of the poor. This is a one-of-a-kind program with no counterpart anywhere in the world, in terms of scope and coverage.
Objectives of the ICDS Program
The following are the objectives of the ICDS scheme:
1. To improve the nutritional and health status of children in the age group of 0-6 years
2. To lay the foundations for the proper psychological physical and social development of the child
3. To reduce mortality morbidity, malnutrition and school dropout
4. To achieve an effective coordination of policy and implementation among the various departments working for the promotion of child development
5. To enhance the capability of the mother and the nutritional needs of the child through proper nutrition and health education.

The imperative for digital education arises from the necessity to equip learners with the skills and competencies required to navigate an increasingly interconnected and technology-driven world.Digital tools and technologies offer interactive and engaging learning experiences that cater to diverse learning styles and enable personalized learning systems dedicated to individual’s needs and preferences. Historically, the Northeastern regions had limited access to formal educationdue to its remote and geographically challenging terrain. Colonial rule in India introduced some educational institutions. After India gained independence in 1947, efforts were made to expand education in the region. Various government initiatives, policies and programs like the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) were implemented to enhance education in Northeast India, aimed to provide universal elementary education and improve secondary infrastructure. In recent years, there have been endeavors by both the central and state governments to bridge the educational gap The dawn of the internet era in the 1990s marked a pivotal moment, fostering an environment conducive to the integration of technology into education. Fast forward to the 21st century, the government initiatives like Make in India, Digital India, SWAYAM and National Digital Literacy Mission (NDLM) have proved to be crucial evidence in the significance of digitalization in education.

Key milestones include the 1992 National Policy on Education, which emphasized inclusive practices, and the 2009 Right to Education Act, which mandated free and compulsory education for all children, including those with disabilities. Recent initiatives have focused on improving accessibility, teacher training and integrating students with diverse needs into mainstream classrooms, reflecting a growing commitment to equitable educational opportunities for all. Contemporary inclusive education in India is characterized by a growing commitment to integrating students with diverse needs into mainstream schools, supported by various policies and initiatives. The 2016 Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act and the 2020 National Education Policy underscore the importance of inclusive practices, advocating for accessible infrastructure, specialized training for educators, and individualized support for students. Despite these advancements, challenges remain, including inadequate resources, a shortage of trained teachers, and varying levels of implementation across different regions. Efforts are ongoing to address these issues, aiming to create an educational environment where all students, regardless of their abilities, have the opportunity to succeed and thrive. The emerging importance of an inclusive education system in India reflects a growing recognition of diversity and equality in the educational landscape. This shift is driven by the realization that inclusive education not only promotes social justice but also enhances academic and social outcomes for all students. In recent years, these narratives have become increasingly relevant as global discussions around sustainable development intensify. Dystopian works like The Hunger Games by Collins (2008) and The Road by McCarthy (2006) are not only popular cultural phenomena but also significant texts that offer critical reflections on the consequences of unsustainable practices. As Suzanne Collins writes in The Hunger Games, “Destroying things is much easier than making them,” a sentiment that captures the destructive trajectory of unsustainable practices that both novels explore. This paper aims to examine how dystopian narratives, with a particular focus on The Hunger Games and The Road, contribute to sustainable development discourse. By analyzing the themes of resource depletion, environmental control, and social inequality, this study situates these narratives within eco-critical and dystopian studies frameworks, offering a deeper understanding of how literature shapes perceptions of sustainability. Thus, in this paper, an attempt has been made to explore how dystopian literature reflects concerns about sustainability, encourages critical thinking about the future of the environment and society, and emphasizes the importance of equitable, sustainable practices for survival.

Drought Early Warning Systems (DEWS) form the essential foundation for effective and proactive drought management strategies. These systems are crucial in facilitating a fundamental shift from reactive approaches, where responses are implemented after the onset of a crisis, to proactive risk reduction measures that aim to anticipate and mitigate the adverse effects of drought before they fully materialize. By providing timely and accurate information about impending drought conditions, DEWS empower governments, communities, and individuals to make informed decisions and take preemptive actions, thereby minimizing the potential economic, social, and ecosystem losses associated with these events (Fig.6.1). Recognizing the risks posed by drought in a timely manner is of paramount importance for ensuring an effective and comprehensive response that can alleviate suffering and reduce overall vulnerability. The implementation of robust drought early warning systems plays a critical role in minimizing the negative consequences of drought and building longterm resilience to this recurring natural hazard.

Water is the most essential resource for life, supporting the survival of allliving beings, including humans, and playing a crucial role in food productionand economic progress. Currently, many cities around theworld are facingsignificant water shortages. About 40 % of global food production dependson irrigation, and countless industrial operations rely heavily on water. Theavailability and quality of water, whether surface or groundwater, have amajor impact on environmental health, economic development, and societagrowth. Human activities like urban expansion, population increase, industrialoutput, and climate shifts are causing a decline in water quality. As nationsdevelop, industrial activities increasingly lead to the pollution of watersources, resulting in negative consequences such as widespread disease and
diminished beauty of water bodies. This pollution is a significant threat toboth the planet and its inhabitants. Higher temperatures are interfering with themetabolic processes of aquatic life, while changes in water pH create unstableconditions. Additionally, increased cloudiness in water reduces oxygen levels,affecting deep-water species and contributing to health issues for both animalsand humans. Polluted water also hinders growth and development in allliving organisms Haldar et al., 2015 and Arif et al., 2020. A study conductedby Halder et al. (2015) highlighted severe health challenges faced bylocalcommunities due to pollution in the Turag River, Dhaka, caused by thedischarge of untreated wastewater into the river. It was revealed that elevatedpH levels in the water, resulting from the use ofcaustic chemicals such assoda ash and caustic soda in industrial processes, were associated with skinirritation and sores. Dietary exposure to polluted crops and fish was found
to contribute to stomach ailments, including gastric ulcers. Concerns wereraised about potential groundwater contamination through the infiltration ofindustrial waste. Microbial contamination was identified as a likely cause ofdiarrhoea and dysentery. The use of river water for bathing and laundry wasobserved to facilitate the spread of waterborne diseases. Outbreaks of yellow
fever, cholera, dengue, malaria, and other epidemics were noted as prevalent inthe area. Respiratory problems and foul odours were attributed to air pollutioncaused by industrial discharge. Maternal and child health in riverbank slumsfound to be vulnerable, emphasizing the urgent need for interventions to addressthese public health concerns.Wastewater produced by industries, agriculture,and domestic activities contains high levels of nutrients, heavy metals, andchemicals, which harm the environment by polluting land, air, and water,

Since plastic was discovered, global plastic production for industrial scale usages has grown exponentially, causing a tremendous increase in plastic waste from a few tons in the 1950's to almost 400 million tons in 2018 (Syberg et al. 2021). Plastic is non-biodegradable and ubiquitous.

Environmental degradation of plastic operates through a mechanism ofphysical fragmentation, photodegradation and microbial degradation (Wright
et al., 2020), resulting in fragmentation of larger plastics into smaller plasticparticles, also called microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs). These debris areserious environmental threats (Hartmann et al., 2019).

Weather wisdom refers to the ability to understand, interpret, and apply knowledge of weather patterns, forecasts, and conditions to make informed decisions in various aspects of life. This concept encompasses a comprehensive understanding of meteorological principles, as well as the ability to analyze and apply weather information in a practical and effective manner. At its core, weather wisdom involves a grasp of basic meteorological concepts, such as atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity, wind, and precipitation. This foundational knowledge serves as a framework for understanding more complex weather phenomena, such as storms, droughts, and heat waves.In addition to a solid understanding of weather fundamentals, weather wisdom also requires the ability to interpret forecasts, warnings, and advisories issued by meteorological agencies. This involves being able to comprehend and analyze weather forecast models, as well as understanding the limitations and uncertainties associated with weather prediction (Fig. 2.1). Furthermore, weather wisdom involves familiarity with local weather patterns, climate, and microclimates. This knowledge is essential for making informed decisions, as local weather conditions can vary significantly from regional or national forecasts. The application of weather knowledge is a critical component of weather wisdom. This involves being able to apply weather information to various aspects

Bioclimatology examines relationships between climate and living organisms, including crops, livestock and humans. It draws on biology, ecology, meteorology, architecture and physiology to explain how temperature, humidity, radiation and wind influence development, comfort, health and productivity. This chapter introduces bioclimatic indices such as the Temperature-Humidity Index, Humidex, wind chill and thermal-comfort measures. Agricultural applications include crop and livestock suitability, heat-stress assessment, housing design, work planning and development of resilient farming systems. Understanding biological responses to climatic conditions supports appropriate management interventions and helps protect productivity and welfare. Bioclimatic analysis therefore connects atmospheric conditions with practical decisions involving plants, animals and people.
