Introduction

At a present time, Organic farming has an important priority in different areas due to worldwide in look of the growing need for pure and nutritious agriculture food and keep up the feasible and environmental pollution on long time associated with indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizer. The use of synthetic inputs in crop cultivation is necessary to meet the growing need for agriculture food in world. The natural fertilizers are made containing living or veiled cells or their strains of N2 fixation, P2 O5 solubilization bacteria. The biofertilizers are used for seed cramming, soil or vermicomposting region with the objective of rising quantity of such microbes and further those microbial processes which augment the obtainability of nutrients that can be easily digest by plants. Biofertilizers are playing higher role in increase soil productivity by f ixing atmospheric nitrogen, both, in relationship with plant roots and without it, solubilise and insoluble soil phosphorus and produces many plant growth substances in the soil.

Rice straw is produced as a by-product of rice production at harvest. Agricultural Waste Burning (AWB) is a major contributor of air pollution in many countries, particularly in South Asia. Exposure to fine particulate matter less than 2.5 μm (micrometer), also known as PM 2.5, released by AWB can cause premature mortality due to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases (Brauer et al.,2012). Combine Harvesters used on the spring rice crop leave behind stubble and straw on the field (Sidhu et al., 2007). Farmers burn the rice residue while preparing the field for wheat sowing season that follows. Further, migrant labour from neighbouring states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh has decreased (Sirhindi, 2019), and resulted in an increase in the cost of agricultural labour during the rice harvest season (Sharma,2018). Farmers find it both convenient and economical to burn residue to clear and prepare their fields for the next crop. In 2018, over 20 million metric tons of rice residue was generated in Punjab, of which almost 10 million metric tons was subject to open-air burning (MoA, 2019). The time window between rice harvesting and wheat sowing is just 20 to 30 days towards the conclusion of the Kharif season, which is one of the primary reasons of crop waste burning (Balwinder et al., 2016).

Soil organic matter is an indispensible component of soil health management. It plays an important role in improving soil physical, chemical and biological environment. Soil health refers to the capacity of the soil in terms of physical, chemical and biological properties for maintaining ecosystem services. With respect to agricultural lands, soil health implies the capability of the soil towards improving crop growth and yield, while also supporting environmental sustainability. Some important determining properties of soil health maintenance are soil reaction, salinity or alkalinity, soil organic matter, soil texture, soil structure/aggregation, water holding capacity, porosity, internal drainage, and nutrient retention capacity. Simultaneously, the key properties maneuvering soil health are soil aeration, internal drainage, nutrient cycling, susceptibility to erosion etc. Except some of the basic properties (soil texture) and processes (soil erosion), most of the determinant properties and processes are maneuvered by the presence of soil organic matter. A healthy soil must have strong resistance to degradation processes and able to recover following a perturbation because of inherent resilience (Magdoff 2001).

1.1 An overview of biomass

Biomass is an abundant and renewable energy source that has the potential to meet the growing need for clean and sustainable energy solutions. This chapter provides an overview of biomass, its potential, and conversion technologies, which include various techniques for transforming biomass into useful forms of energy such as heat, electricity, and biofuels.

Biomass is an organic substance that can be obtained from agricultural crop waste, forest waste, animals, and microorganisms. It can be used as an energy source or a primary material in various applications. The energy in biomass is derived from photosynthesis, in which plants convert sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water into organic matter.

4.1 Introduction

Baling biomass is a crucial technique in efficiently managing and utilizing agricultural crop residue. This chapter explores the process of baling, which involves compacting biomass materials into standardized bundles for easier handling, storage, and transportation. From agricultural residues to forestry waste, the chapter delves into various types of biomass suitable for baling, the equipment used, and the benefits of this technique. It also discusses the environmental impact, economic considerations, and emerging trends in baling methods. Through in-depth analysis and practical insights, this chapter offers a comprehensive understanding of how baling contributes to sustainable biomass management and resource optimization.

Nearly 70% of the world’s population will live in cities by the year 2050, and cities currently pump out 70% of greenhouse gas emissions. Buildings alone contribute nearly 40% of emissions. This is also true for Indian cities, which are responsible for 40% of the energy use, 30% of raw material use, and 20% of land use. The residential and commercial buildings account for 31 % of the electricity consumption and are rising at 10-12 % annually. As per estimates, approximately 75% of the building stock that India will see in the year 2047 is yet to be built. For all these issues, renewable energy is the major solution.

What is A Smart Energy Home?

Smart homes use internet - connected devices to enable remote monitoring and management of appliances and systems, such as temperature, lighting, and security cameras. Smart energy homes take a step beyond the gadget-filled smart home to focus on bringing smart functionality to major household energy-using systems like HVAC, water heating, and plug loads (including appliances and electronics).

4.1 Research Setting

In any social science research, it is hardly possible to conceptualize and perceive the data and interpret the data more accurately until and unless a clear understanding of the characteristics in the area and attitude or the behavior of people is at commend of the interpreter who intends to unveil an understanding of the implication and behavioral complexes of the individual who live in the area under reference and form a representative part of the larger community. The socio-demographic background of the local people in a rural setting has been critically administered in this section. A research setting is a surrounding in which input and elements of research are contextually imbibed, interactive and mutually contributive to the system performance. Research setting is immensely important in the sense because it is characterizing and influencing the interplays of different factors and components.

In order to cater to the nutritional needs of a rapidly growing population, it is imperative to increase food grain production on the same land while maintaining the soil’s productive capacity. This necessitates comprehensive research to establish a scientific foundation for enhancing and sustaining food production and soil productivity with minimal environmental impact (Rathore et al., 2010). Balanced nutrition extends beyond the application of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium in specific quantities through fertilizers. It entails ensuring that the soil contains the right proportions of available nutrients to meet the crop’s requirements for optimal yield (Rathore et al., 2010).

Precision farming, also known as precision agriculture, prescription farming, and site-specific farming, is grounded on the principle of managing fields based on their heterogeneity (Nowak 2021). In the past, crop management decisions were made for the entire field, treating it as a homogenous unit, despite significant variations in soil characteristics, weed infestations, and plant growth within a field (Nowak 2021). Precision agriculture integrates modern technology with past experience to manage farming on a grid-by-grid basis (Nowak 2021).

Watershed management has emerged as an important research area in recent years. Understanding the morphology of the catchment is one of the widely used methods for watershed management. Morphometry is the measurement and mathematical analysis of the configuration of the earth’s surface, shape, and dimension of its landforms (Agarwal 1998; Obi Reddy et al., 2002). The study of watershed is very useful in drainage basin evaluation, silt erosion control, flood frequency analysis, watershed prioritization, natural resources management, and conservation (Waikar and Nilawar, 2014). The significance of morphometric analysis is highlighted in the basins that are either un-gauged or difficult to access. The morphometry is usually analyzed through measurement of linear, aerial, relief, gradient of channel network, and contributing ground slope of the basin (Magesh et al., 2012). The hydrological behavior of a basin can be easily determined through the areal parameters (Mahala, 2020.) The evolutionary history of any basin can be best understood through the implication of different relief morphometric measures of drainage basin (Sharma and Sarma, 2013).

GIS and RS techniques are proven convenient methods for morphometric characterization of sub-watersheds and prioritization of watersheds. As the satellite images provide a synoptic view of a large area, the RS and GIS methods become very useful in the analysis of drainage basin morphometry (Rai et al., 2017). Thus, the morphometric analysis using spatial techniques has emerged to be the fast and efficient method as compared to most of the conventional methods (Rao et al., 2010) such as manual extraction of drainage network and assigning the stream order from a published Survey of India topographic map. The present study aims at using remote sensing and GIS technology to compute various parameters of morphometric characteristics of the Chaliyar River basin.

Soil is a silent foundation and a dynamic part of Earth’s complex ecosystem. It sustains life, influences plant growth and is involved in various environmental processes. However, the balance of this vital resource is increasingly threatened by the pervasive effects of climate change, manifested by rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns and changes in atmospheric conditions. As global temperatures rise and weather patterns change, the relationship between soil and climate poses transformative challenges with far-reaching consequences. This research addresses the complexity of this interaction and examines how climate change affects agriculture, soil health, composition and functionality. Soil health, a holistic concept that includes physical, chemical and biological aspects of soils, is closely linked to climate change. A notable consequence of climate change is the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as droughts and floods. These events disrupt the delicate balance of soil ecosystems and lead to erosion, loss of topsoil and reduced fertility. Additionally, increased temperatures contribute to soil moisture depletion, reducing water availability for plants and microorganisms and further compromising soil health. A central issue at the interface between soil science and climate change is the role of soil as a carbon sink. Soils store large amounts of carbon in the form of organic material, thereby influencing the environment.

The world’s food and nutritional security are under serious threat from climate change. Climate changes have significant effects on agriculture by affecting insect pests, their natural enemies, and pollinators as illustrated in Fig 1 (Eigenbrode and Adhikari, 2023). According to Benedict (2003), 13.6% of annual crop loss worldwide is attributed to insect pest attack. Crops, crop pests, natural enemies and pollinators are directly and indirectly impacted by erratic climate. The continuous and anticipated alterations in these insects vary across species, systems, and geographical areas, impeding the development of strong generalizations and forecasts. Moreover, the implementation of “climate-smart” agricultural methods, may have additional effects on ideal management of these insects.

Direct effects on insect pests

Temperature: The most reliable, well-researched, and easily modelled component of climate change is warming. Warming affects physiology, phenology, dispersal, reproduction, development, and survival of insect pests (Bale et al., 2002) as illustrated in Fig 2 (Skendži? et al., 2021). It can be inferred that increased herbivory would be associated with rising temperatures in many cases. High temperature and high humidity are key reasons for whitefly population increase (Pathania et al., 2020). Warming can alter the number of insect generations in Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in China (Huang and Hao, 2020).

India is one of the unique countries in the world with great diversity in climate. The annual rainfall varies from about 180 mm in North western part of India to almost 11,777 mm at Cherrapunji in Meghalaya. For a considerable amount of time, Cherrapunji had occupied the position of wettest place in India. However, off late, observations revealed that it is Mawsynram which receives the maximum amount of annual rainfall. Hence, Mawsynram with 11,872 mm annual rainfall is the wettest place in India. Both the places-Mawsynram and Cherrapunji-are located within 16 kilometers from each other in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. The maximum temperature at Churu in western Rajasthan is 50ºC and the lowest minimum temperature at Leh in Ladakh region is as low as -35ºC. In view of such great diversity in the distribution of rainfall and temperature in the country, it is necessary to have clear understanding on regional, seasonal and diurnal variation in different weather parameters (Fig. 13.1).

The research setting is an important component of the research methodology. Research setting refers to the detailed information of an area where the study was conducted. The research setting can be seen as the physical, social, and cultural site in which the researcher conducts the study. In qualitative research, the participants are observed in their natural environments with a primary focus on meaning-making. The study area generally consists of a particular geographical area viz. a state, district, block, or gram panchayat area selected according to the benefit of the investigator who possesses adequate knowledge regarding the location, communication facility, the period of study, the availability of resources, etc. of the locality so that he can easily approach every corner of the area for data collection. Additionally, to comprehend people’s knowledge, attitudes, and behaviour more easily, investigators must have a fundamental understanding of their socio-demographic backgrounds. It is the environment within which studies are run that has important consequences for experimental design, the type of data that can be collected and the interpretation of results.

The Review of literature is a critical summary of published academic research and other sources on a particular topic or research question. It involves identifying, analyzing, and synthesizing relevant research studies, books, articles, and other sources to provide a comprehensive overview of what is known and not known about the topic.

A good review of literature should be well-structured, focused, and provide a balanced and objective analysis of the existing literature. The following are the key elements of a literature review:

1. Introduction: The introduction should provide background information on the topic and highlight the importance of the research question.

2. Search Strategy: The search strategy should outline the databases and search terms used to identify relevant literature.

3. Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria: The inclusion and exclusion criteria should be clearly defined to ensure that only relevant studies are included in the review.

Mangoes (Mangifera Indica L.), often referred to as the “king of fruits,” are celebrated for their rich flavour, nutritional value, and versatility in culinary applications (Swaroop et al., 2018). Globally, mangoes hold a significant economic and cultural position. Mangoes are grown in over 90 countries, with India, China, and Thailand being leading producers. They contribute
significantly to the agricultural economies of these and other tropical and subtropical regions (Makarabbi, 2023). Mangoes are a major export commodity for many countries, generating substantial foreign exchange. For instance, India’s mango exports account for a sizable share of the global mango market, valued at millions of dollars annually. In many developing countries, mango farming supports millions of smallholder farmers, providing employment and a source of income (Thakor, 2019). Mangoes are enjoyed in numerous forms— fresh, dried, as juices, pickles, and chutneys. They are also a key ingredient in various traditional dishes and desserts across different cultures. Mangoes play a central role in several cultural festivals and rituals, symbolizing prosperityand good fortune in countries like India and the Philippines. Mangoes are rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, including vitamins A and C, folate, and fiber. Their consumption is associated with various health benefits, such as improved immunity, digestive health, and skin care (Yahia et al., 2023). While mangoes offer significant benefits, their cultivation faces several challenges, primarily due to pest infestations that can severely impact both yield and fruit quality. Effective management of these pests is crucial to ensure sustainable mango production (Singh and Baradevanal, 2021).

Forecasting of future weather conditions are based upon the collection and analysis of meteorological observations. With the help of advanced computing system and satellite data, the accuracy of weather forecasting is improving day by day. Weather forecasts may be classified according to the space and time scale of the predicted phenomena. With advanced technology, the spatial resolution of accurate forecast is enhanced and India Meteorological Department (IMD) has started to issue the Block-level forecast. The meteorological phenomenon can be distinguished among three classes of phenomena with a scale that is larger than the turbulent microscale: the mesoscale, synoptic scale, and planetary scale (Geer et al., 2018). Considering the variability of agro-climatic condition of India, the micro-level weather based agro-advisory has great importance to enhance the farm income. IMD has initiated the Block-level Agromet Advisory Services (AAS) in collaboration with Indian Council of Agricultural Research through establishment of District Agromet Units (DAMUs) at various Krishi Vigyan Kendra’s (KVK). Improvisation of the existing District-level Agromet Advisory Services (AAS) and starting of Block-level services are the basic objectives of DAMU. The District Agromet Units will act as nodal centre to prepare and disseminate the crop and locationspecific AAS to farmers at block level. Apart from this, the micro-level Agromet Advisory Service was implemented at NICRA (National Innovation on Climate Resilient Agriculture) villages through a network project of Indian  Council of Agricultural Research (Banerjee et al, 2018; Chakraborty et al., 2018). As a part of the nation-wide program, the feasibility of village level agromet advisory has been assessed. Thus, the importance of micro-level  agromet advisory and advisory on extreme weather events are discussed in this chapter.

The natural habitat of rubber (Heavea brasiliensis) is rain forests of the Amazon basin, situated within 5° North and South at altitudes below 200m. The climate of this region is equatorial monsoon type characterized by mean
monthly temperature by 25 to 28°C, well distributed rainfall and no marked dry weather. Though it is originated in the Amazon basin, it is now predominantly grown in the tropics where an equatorial monsoon type climate prevails. Regions between 8°N and 10°S which includes Indonesian archipelago, Malaysia, southern part of Sri Lank  and some other Islands, are better suited to rubber cultivation. The production of natural rubber in the country was 8.65 lakh MT in 2008–09, registering a 4.74 per cent growth compared to the previous year. India is the fourth largest producer of natural rubber with a share of eight per cent in the World after Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia and the fourth largest consumer of natural rubber after China, USA and Japan. Among the rubber growing countries in the World, India occupies a pride place with the top most position in productivity (Table 9.1). The productivity of natural rubber (NR) in India in 2009–10 was 1784 kg/ha. In 1950–51, it was 284 kg/ha. The growth achieved in terms of the productivity of natural rubber is 628 per cent. Clouds, those ever-present features of our sky, are more than just aesthetically pleasing; they are fundamental components of earth‘s weather and climatesystems. This chapter, „cloud formation and classification,“ will embark on a journey to understand the fascinating processes that lead to their creation and the systematic ways in which they are categorized.
We will begin by exploring the essential ingredients for cloud formation: the presence of water vapor in the atmosphere, the availability of condensation or ice nuclei, and the crucial mechanism of air cooling. We will delve into how rising air parcels cool adiabatically, reaching saturation and allowing water vapor to condense or deposit into the myriad forms we recognize as clouds. Following the understanding of their genesis, we will navigate the internationally recognized system of cloud classification. This system, primarily based on a cloud’s altitude, appearance, and the processes that formed it, provides a common language for meteorologists and observers worldwide. We will learn to identify the main cloud types – high, mid-level, low, and vertically developing – and their associated characteristics, from the wispy cirrus to the towering cumulonimbus.
Furthermore, we will touch upon the significance of different cloud types in indicating current weather conditions and forecasting future weather. The appearance and evolution of clouds can offer valuable clues about atmospheric stability, moisture content, and the likelihood of precipitation. By the end of this chapter, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of how clouds form the diverse array of cloud types that grace our skies, and their importance in the broader context of atmospheric science. Let’s unlock the secrets held within these visible masses of water and ice suspended in our atmosphere.

The plants draw water from the soil for growth and development. The soil acts a reservoir for soil moisture (Fig.5.1). The basic aim of a soil water balance model is to quantify the manner in which the water supplied to the soil either through precipitation and irrigation is disposed off. In the process, the soil water balance models were found to be extremely useful to determine the amount of water utilized by the crop for evapotranspiration.
The concept of water balance was originally developed by Thornthwaite, an American geographer and it formed the basis for development of more scientifi c advances due to its wide range of applicability including
• Choice of crops/ cropping systems based on water availability
• Irrigation scheduling
• Optimisation of limited water resources for higher productivity
• Characterization of droughts and agricultural droughts
• Assessment of crop yield and pre harvest forecasting of crop yields
• Designing irrigation projects
• Development of water storage structures
There are quite a large number of water balance models available in literature nowadays. Several of these models may be applicable for regions where there are developed. There were considerable efforts to develop water balance models can be used by the crop on daily basis in case of different crops as well. The choice of a water balance model to a large extent depends on the availability of data required for running the model. It may not be possible to cover all models available in

The movement of water from soil to the crop canopy and leaves to provide water for transpiration and the effect of weather factors on transpiration is most important area of study. When the crop is just sown, there will be an only evaporation of water from the soil. After germination of seeds there will be emergence of seedlings. After the emergence of seedlings there will be formation of leaves. The small leaves start intercepting the incoming solar radiation and absorb some portion of solar energy, get heated and there will be evaporation turn off water from the stomata of the leaf. When water vapour escapes into the atmosphere through the stomata of leaf, the plant absorbs carbon dioxide which results in photosynthetic activity. During night time, there will not be any photosynthesis due to absence of sunlight. The plants use parts of the photosynthetic accumulate for its metabolic activity and the process is called maintenance respiration. The balance of the photosynthetic accumulate contributes to the expansion of leaves and increased dry matter accumulation in crop plans. The process of dry matter accumulation in plants is called crop growth. When the seedlings start growing, there will be formation of tillers or branches. When the leaves grow it reaches a stage when the crop will be completely shading the ground and the soil evaporation will be minimum and maximum amount of water is lost only through evapotranspiration (Fig.6.1).

Today, the integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) is transforming agriculture by shifting the approach from reactive management to proactive, data-driven decision making. Modern IoT systems deploy a network of interconnected sensors that continuously capture critical environmental parameters such as soil moisture, temperature, humidity, light intensity, and nutrient levels. These sensors provide granular, real-time data that is transmitted to centralized analytics platforms where it can be processed and visualized. The resulting insights empower farmers, aquaculturists, and animal husbandry professionals to optimize every aspect of their operations — enhancing yields, reducing waste, and increasing sustainability. This chapter explores the deployment and impact of IoT in agricultural and allied systems. It provides detailed technical discussions on sensor networks, communication protocols, and power management; illustrates how real-time data integration with advanced analytics transforms decision making; and presents in-depth case studies from initiatives such as John Deere’s precision agriculture systems, Microsoft FarmBeats, and regional projects like SmartAgriHubs. Moreover, the chapter delves into the formidable challenges of IoT deployment, including those faced by underdeveloped regions—and concludes with a look at emerging trends and a synthesis of the future vision for agriculture.
6.1 The Role of IoT in Modern Agriculture
6.1.1 Revolutionizing Data Collection
The most significant impact of IoT in agriculture is its transformation of data collection. Traditional methods relied on periodic field observations, manual sampling, and regional weather reports that provided only a snapshot of environmental conditions. In contrast, IoT devices continuously monitor the microclimate across a farm. With sensors distributed throughout fields, livestock facilities, and aquaculture systems, farmers can now capture real-time data on temperature, humidity, soil moisture, light intensity, and more (Fig.6.1).

Regenerative agriculture is a transformative approach to farming that prioritizes soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem services, while also increasing crop yields and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. This holistic method of farming is designed to regenerate the health of the entire ecosystem, rather than just focusing on maximizing food production alone. By adopting regenerative agriculture practices, farmers can improve soil fertility, enhance water quality, and promote biodiversity, ultimately leading to more resilient and productive farming systems. Regenerative agriculture involves being highly attentive to the needs of the soil, crops, and ecosystem as a whole. Alert farming requires farmers to be vigilant and responsive to changes in weather patterns, soil moisture levels, and crop health, making adjustments as needed to optimize crop yields and minimize environmental impact. This approach involves using advanced technologies, such as precision agriculture and data analytics, to monitor and manage farm operations in real-time, enabling farmers to make data-driven decisions and respond quickly to emerging challenges. The benefits of regenerative agriculture are numerous. Not only can it improve crop yields and promote sustainable agricultural practices, but it can also enhance ecosystem services, support biodiversity, and contribute to climate change mitigation efforts. By adopting regenerative agriculture practices, farmers can play a critical role in creating a more sustainable food system, one that prioritizes the health of both people and the planet .
4.1 Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) versus Regenerative Agriculture (RA)
Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) and Regenerative Agriculture (RA) are two approaches (Fig. 4.1) to sustainable agriculture that share some similarities, but also have distinct differences

Growing populations and industrialisation around the world are driving up energy demand, which increases reliance on fossil fuels. The World Energy Forum projects that global stocks of fossil fuels like coal, natural gas, and oil will run out in less than ten years and decades [1]. Fossil fuels account for 88.1% of total energy consumption; they include coal (43%), oil and other liquids (23%), waste (6%), natural gas (6%), and biomass (24%). Hydroelectricity, and nuclear energy, on the other hand, share relatively small percentages of energy (1% and 2%, respectively) [2]. Petro-diesel, also known as petroleum diesel, is currently utilized as a fossil fuel and is created when crude oil is fractionally distilled at temperatures between 250°C and 350°C under atmospheric pressure. Once heated to a certain degree, the different types of diesel fuel are formed via the vaporization of hydrocarbon chains and the isolation and blending of constituents in a prescribed ratio. Typically, 25% of the petrodiesel’s composition consists of aromatic hydrocarbons and 75% of saturated hydrocarbons. The combustion of diesel fuel releases sulfur, nitrogen, and particulate matter into the environment, which are all present in significant concentrations in petro-diesel. Moreover, burning fossil fuels has resulted in several environmental problems, such as greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), which have a major impact on global warming, climate change, and a host of other chronic illnesses [3]. India is ranked as the fourth-biggest importer and user of petroleum products and crude oil. With demand for oil reaching about 4.1 million gallons per day in 2015, there is a growing disparity between India’s oil supplies and supply. The IEA analysis predicts that beyond 2050, there won’t be any oil reserves and that India’s oil consumption will increase by 6.0 million barrels per day to 9.8 mg/d in 2040 [4]. Algae are organisms that grow in an aquatic environment and use light and carbon dioxide (CO2) to produce biomass. There are two categories of algae: macroalgae and microalgae. Macroalgae, measured in inches, are large multicellular algae that often grow in ponds. Macroalgae refers to thousands of macroscopic and multicellular seaweed species. The term includes some species of macroalgae such as Rhodophyta (red), Phaeophyta (brown), and Chlorophyta (green). Algae species such as kelp provide important breeding habitats for fisheries and other marine species, thereby protecting food sources; Other species such as plankton algae play an essential role in carbon sequestration and produce up to 90% of the Earth’s oxygen. Macroalgae, or large seaweeds, grow very rapidly and can reach extraordinary lengths up to 60 meters (McHugh, 2003). Their growth rates are much higher compared to many land plants. For example, wild brown algae can yield between 3.3 and 11.3 kg of dry biomass per square meter each year, and cultivated varieties can produce up to 13.1 kg in just seven months. In contrast, sugarcane, which is known for its high productivity, typically produces 6.1 to 9.5 kg of fresh biomass per square meter per year (Kraan. 2010). Additionally, macroalgae are available naturally in water bodies on a seasonal basis, and farming them in the ocean does not require traditional farming land or fertilizers. This makes them a promising option for addressing energy needs, as they are not only used for food and hydrocolloid extraction but also have potential for ethanol production. Humans have a long history of growing algae for uses such as food, food additives, feed, textiles and papers, bio-plastics. In recent years, seaweed farming has become a worldwide agricultural practice, providing food and feedstock for various chemical uses such as carrageenan, animal feed, biofertilizers and growth promoters. Due to its importance in marine ecology and carbon uptake, recent attention has focused on kelp farming as a potential climate change mitigation strategy for carbon dioxide biocapture, along with other benefits, such as reduced nutrient loads and increased habitat for coastal aquatic species, and reduced local ocean acidification in addition to biofuel opportunities. The seven most commonly cultivated algal taxa are Eucheuma spp., Kappaphycus alvarezii, Gracilaria spp., Saccharina japonica, Undaria pinnatifida, Pyropia spp. and Sargassum fusiform. Eucheuma and K. alvarezii are cultivated for carrageenan (a gelling agent); Gracilaria is grown for agar; while the rest is grown for food. Correlation measures the strength and direction of association, while regression develops mathematical relationships for explanation and prediction. This chapter discusses their application to rainfall, temperature, humidity, evapotranspiration, crop growth and yield. It explains simple and multiple relationships, assumptions, interpretation, model fitting, predictive power and potential errors. Pesticides are used to control plant growth (herbicides), insects (insecticides), worms  (vermicides), bacteria (bacteriocides), fungi (fungicides), and other organisms. Almost without exception, pesticides are used to benefit humans by the control of unwanted species of plants (e.g. weeds in a lawn), disease-causing bacteria (e.g., Pneumococcus, the causative agent of pneumonia), disease-carrying insects (e.g. malarial or yellow fever mosquitoes) or in controlling destruction of agricultural products by disease-causing organisms (e.g., corn-borers, the virus of anthurium blight). Although they are by and large mostly beneficial, pesticides used both properly and improperly are also “resources out of place”, that is pollutants, that are subject to normal ecological processes.

The evolution of man took place about one million years ago in response to changes in the physical environment. We learnt gradually to adapt different modes of life to varying environments and migrated different parts of the world. Human activities have had their impact on the environment, which was depending on the number of people living in  the area and  their level  of economic development. Per capita consumption of food, energy and other resources in developed countries is larger and its impact on the environment is much greater than equal number of persons living in developing countries in Africa or Asia. Therefore, the distribution of population needs to be examined in detail.

Expansion of the scale of human activity in recent years has put so much strain on the natural environment of this planet that in some cases nature can no longer recover. The nature’s ability though recovers damage or harmful effects in one part of the world do not stop in the very area and keeps going beyond national borders and become environmental problems on a global scale, but in a limited manner.

Introduction

The tropical evergreen forests of the Sahyadris or the Malnad region of Karnataka is one of the richest plant areas (“hot spots”) on earth and crucial to the oxygen supply of the world. More than 30,000 varieties of wildlife and plants and over 8,000 said to unique are reported to lie here. Unless reckless deforestation is halted soon, some scientists fear that within the next 100 years this virgin forest could become an arid wilderness.

Agriculture is one of the major age-old occupations of human beings providing food to the people and also supplies raw materials to a number of agro based industries. However the expansion of agricultural fields in the dense woody forest areas has brought about many environmental problems and thereby degraded the quality of environment in ecologically most sensitive areas like Uttar Kannada District. In India, agricultural practices are primarily based on the traditional system of intensive subsistence forming. It is also observed that more and more available area (forest) has been brought under cultivations to feed the population which has been growing at an alarming rate. The agricultural expansion and population growth, in forest areas of Uttar Kannada Districts have degraded the quality of environment.

INTRODUCTION

Inspite of recent technological developments which have helped to increase agricultural production in many countries, growth of plants and animals continue to depend to a large extent on the weather conditions. Each plant has its own climatic requirements for growth and development and any large scale deviation from it exert negative influence.

Growth of plants is most sensitive to temperature just above a threshold value and near the maximum value, where growth normally stops. Therefore, periods of extreme temperature i. e. low temperatures below the threshold value and high temperatures above the maxima are hazardous to plant development and growth. Extreme temperature conditions during cold spells cause stress and frost; high temperatures lead to heat stress, and both affect agricultural production. Snow and ice storms in late spring or early autumn are very hazardous to many temperate crops.

Similarly extremes of moisture conditions namely dry desiccating winds, drought episodes and low moisture conditions as well as very humid atmospheric conditions including wet spells tend to affect agriculture. High soil moisture situations of water logging and flooding associated with heavy rainfall and tropical storms have adverse effect on plant growth and development since they influence the rate of transpiration, leaf area expansion and ultimately plant productivity. Drastic changes in rainfall variability can have very significant impact, particularly in climatically marginal zones such as arid, semi-arid and sub-humid areas where incidence of widespread drought is frequent. Dry desiccating and strong winds reduce agricultural production as a result of very high evapotranspiration rates. It also causes mechanical damage to plant with weak stems by lodging such as the sugarcane and the banana.

INTRODUCTION

Any crop has its own optimal requirements or selective response to the environmental factors such as rainfall/ soil moisture supply, day/night air temperature, soil temperature, duration of sunshine and its intensity. The growth and development of a plant which ultimately governs the agricultural productivity of a region, is closely related with climatic factors. Weather phenomenon has a profound influence on crop growth stage. A moderate wind or a light rain, when the crop growth is near to harvest, may do more damage than even heavy rain and high wind in the vegetative phase. So land use planning by matching crop growth with weather parameters forms a basis for successful agriculture (Samra, 2003) in a particular region. In order to achieve sustainable agricultural productivity in the 21^st century, the climate and weather systems are being recognized as critical agenda and input.

INTRODUCTION

Several biophysical factors govern the agricultural productivity of a region. Among the key biophysical factors, weather and more particularly rainfall has the over riding impact on agricultural productivity since rainfall is a primary source of water and the first requirement for raising any crop. This element influences various dynamics of crop growth and development and accounts from nearly two thirds of variation in agricultural productivity. The amount of rainfall at a particular place is important; an equal important factor is its temporal distribution, which is uneven, uncertain and erratic in most part of the country. Breaks in monsoon are common phenomenon during the monsoon period. The analysis of rainfall characteristics such as occurrence and distribution of dry or wet spell is essentially required for successful crop planning, development of befitting agro techniques, recommendation of suitable crop variety, designing of water harvesting ponds, earthen dams and other soil conservation structures. It is also an established fact that the crop development will be affected if the dry spell coincides with sensitive phonological stage of the crop and sometimes beneficial if it coincides with the ripening stage. Hence for the purpose of crop planning and to carry out the agricultural practices, it is important to know the sequence of dry and wet periods. An attempt has been made in this paper to analyse the rainfall in standard meteorological week as well as monthly basis at different probability levels for Lembucherra by using computer based forecasting technique.

Abstract

The Cauvery delta is a major bird-foot shaped delta with its apex located east of Tiruchirappalli with the mother channel Cauvery flowing along Thanjavur– Kumbakonam – Kaveripoompattinam. The distributary drainages are radiating over an arc towards east from its apex with a fan shape and finally debouch into the sea from south of Tiruthuraipoondi in the south to Kaveripoompattinam in the north. All these distributary drainages are now seen as palaeochannels including the mother channel Cauvery, which is now called as “Palam Cauvery”. The present day flow of Cauvery river is confined to the northernmost rim of the delta as river Coleroon. On the basis of the archaeological, epigraphic and historical data analysed earlier and the14C dating carried out recently, the present authors infer that the age of the delta may vary from 2300 Y.B.P. ( Years Before Present) to 750 Y.B.P. and the age of the palaeochannels are also younging from 2300 Y.B.P. in the south to 750 Y.B.P. in the north. In the southern part of the Cauvery delta, the Mio-Pliocene Sandstone of Pattukottai-Mannargudi area is undergoing upliftment along N-S faults. On the basis of the rapid land progradation during 6085±233 Y.B.P. - 1020±80 Y.B.P. in Vedaranniyam coast, it is visualized that the Mio-Pliocene Sandstone must be undergoing upliftment significantly since 6100 Y.B.P. onwards. On the basis of the occurrence of older palaeochannels in the south, the gradual younging palaeochannels towards the north and the land emergence in the south of the Cauvery delta in Pattukottai – Mannargudi area, it is concluded that the distributary drainages of river Cauvery would have become sequentially defunct / shifted from south to north and finally the mother channel Cauvery also would have been pushed towards north to reach the present tract of Coleroon river. The thinner palaeochannels in the south and the gradual wider palaeochannels in the north of the delta further indicate that as the land was already undergoing emergence in the south even before river Cauvery has entered into Thanjavur plains, the river could not comfortably spread its distributaries in the south. Hence, the southern distributaries, after a brief flow, would have started drying sequentially from south to north during 2300–750 Y.B.P. thereby the floodwater of each of the southern distributary channel would have been pushed to its successive northern counterpart, i.e. the southern distributary (say 1), pushing its water to its immediate northern counterpart (say 2), then the combined flow of 1 and 2 pushing the water to 3 and so on. The anomalous eyed drainage and its modifications during the last 50–60 years and compressed meanders in Coleroon river, deflected drainages in Palam Cauvery, truncation and punctuation of beach ridges by the E – W faults along the N – S coast and such faults acting as pathways for the sub parallel creeks indicate vibrant Late Holocene geological history predominated by the tectonic movements in Cauvery delta.

Abstract

There is a consensus amongst the geoscientists that overall there has been progradation along the east and west coasts of peninsular India. However, the present day configuration of the coasts and some of the geomorphologic features such as absence of spit and delta along west coast and absence of major estuaries and petroliferous structures along east coast still remain controversial. The present study, based on the appreciation of certain geomorphological and tectonic features on Landsat imagery and aerial photographs of southern part of Indian Peninsula, suggests that the evolution of the coastline has been mainly controlled by tectonism.

The tapering nature of the coastline is attributed to the Precambrian orographic axis. The serrated nature of the post Precambrian coast line is due to the Precambrian transverse faults, whereas the serrated margin of the post Gondwana, Post cretaceous and post Tertiary coast lines are attributed once again to the Precambrian faults reactivated time and again. During the Quaternary period the coast line has undergone many modifications. The coast line attained sinuosity due to Pleistocene folding which is well manifested by river migration. The coast line was subsequently faulted and shifted with en echelon pattern due to N-S regional compression which is referable to the collision of Indian Plate with Tibetan plate.

For the intelligent appreciation and understanding of various reactions and processes associated with soils a little basic knowledge of chemistry is helpful. If the reader follows this chapter carefully, the working knowledge of chemistry thus acquired will enable him to follow all the complicated chemical reactions taking place in the soil.

What is Chemistry? Chemistry is the science that deals with the chemical changes. What is a chemical change? When two or more substances combine to give a substance entirely different in properties to the individual components, the change is called a chemical action to distinguish it from the purely physical action in which the properties of the product are intermediate between the components. The latter naturally can be separated easily by mechanical means. For instance a mixture of sand and water can be separated by passing through a filter, and a mixture of salt and water can be separated by evaporating the water when the salt is left as residue. But water itself is a compound of two gases: oxygen and hydrogen. Its properties are totally different from its components. We can freeze it, evaporate it and perform a host of other operations on it without changing it in the least.

Atoms and molecules: The whole science of chemistry rests on atoms and molecules If these are understood clearly, basic chemistry is reduced to simplicity. Take a familiar object like gold or silver and go on subdividing it into smaller and smaller bits. You will reach a stage that further subdivision will become impossible. You will have reached the primary units, the elementary bricks of which the substance is made up, namely the “Atoms”. An atom in chemistry is the smallest brick from which all material substances in the world are made up. Not that you can see an atom. It is so small that even the most powerful microscope will nut reveal its presence. You could perhaps just see a collection of a million atoms as a tiny spot of light if it is illuminated with a powerful beam of light. Even then you could not say if it was round, square, or oblong. However, you need not look for any such tangible proof to believe in the existence of atoms. Even pure logic would compel you to stop somewhere if you started with an imaginary division and sub-division of a substance. You could not go on ad infinitum. Even the ancients, who knew no modern chemistry, believed in their existence purely from philosophical reasoning.

Greek scientist Theophrastus (300 BC) advocated legume rotation. As early as 1750 AD it was known that plants require Nitre. Louis Pasteure in 1860 AD stated the possibility of atmospheric nitrogen fixation by microorganisms. Hellriegel and Willfarth (1886) strengthened the views of Louis Pasteure by his observations on the irratic behaviour of legumes to nitrate nutrition. Beizerink (1890) isolated the organism involved in nitrogen fixation. The systematic field experiments conducted at Rothemstead experimental station showed that the plants respond to inorganic nitrogen.

ROLES OF NITROGEN IN CROPS

Plants contain 1-5 per cent nitrogen by weight. It is a structural component of chlorophyll, aminoacids and proteins. Plant proteins contain 16 per cent nitrogen (6.25 × %N = protein). Plants are dependent on protein for their propagation. Cereals possess a threshold protein level below which grain will not form.

3.1 Introduction

By the end of the twentieth century one of our most important scientific accomplishments has been the explicit realization that the human population is changing the earth system. Some of these changes are occurring at a remarkable rate. We know, with certainty, that human activities are changing land use, habitats, the chemistry of the Earth’s atmosphere and water, rates and balance of biogeochemical processes, and diversity of life on the planet (Vitousek et al. 1997). One prominent mode of human disturbance has resulted from activities that mobilize the nutrient elements nitrogen and phosphorus through land clearing, production and applications of fertilizer, discharge of human waste, animal production, and combustion of fossil fuels (Nixon 1995).

As a result of these activities, surface waters and ground waters throughout the world now have elevated concentrations of N and P compared to concentrations even in the middle of the 20th century. Our mobilization of N and P has accelerated the fluxes of these elements to coastal waters, and fertilization of coastal ecosystems is now a serious environmental problem because it stimulates plant growth and disrupts the balance between the production and metabolism of organic matter in the coastal zone. Coastal eutrophication is a recently recognized phenomenon (Nixon 1995), and scientific investigation of this human disturbance has progressed for only a few decades, so our conceptual model of the problem is evolving rapidly. Here, I describe 2 phases in the evolution of our conceptual model of how nutrient enrichment disrupts coastal ecosystems, and then finish with a view to the future, suggesting critical questions that must be answered as we work to advance and broaden our understanding of this complex environmental problem. This examination of conceptual models is designed as a complement to the excellent general reviews of coastal eutrophication (Vollenweider 1992, Heip 1995, Nixon 1995, Jørgensen & Richardson 1996, National Research Council 2000).
