In the upcoming sections, we will embark on an in-depth examination of the diverse forms that ITK related to weather forecasting takes. This includes detailed discussions on:
• Observational Indicators: How traditional communities keenly observe subtle changes in the natural world, such as specific patterns in animal behavior (e.g., bird migration patterns, insect activity, animal calls), plant phenology (e.g., early or late flowering, unusual fruiting patterns of wild plants), and the behavior of flora and fauna as harbingers of upcoming weather shifts.
• Atmospheric and Astronomical Signs: The interpretation of sky conditions (e.g., cloud formations, specific colors of sunrise/sunset, halos around the sun or moon), wind patterns, atmospheric pressure changes (often perceived through bodily sensations or changes in local sound travel), and celestial phenomena (e.g., star brightness, moon phases) as indicators for short-term or seasonal forecasts.

Abstract

Indigenous water saving technologies in arid and semi-arid environment is a local traditional practice for effective use of the limited water supply. These technologies can be used as a base for future development that can be made on these technologies through incorporating the current industry tools. The importance of studying the indigenous knowledge and practices is that it can help to develop enhanced versions of these technologies, and to understand the ability of local communities to adopt the newly developed technology. In Sudan, several indigenous water saving approaches has been used by local societies at various scales. An insight for these technologies, their strength and weaknesses are given here. On “Haffir” (water ponds), Wadi control, and water diversion methods were used for a long time of history for water collection and conservation. At farm scale, terraces, mulching, intercropping, low tillage, fallow, low-water consumption crops and fast maturing crops are common indigenous water saving technologies. Traditional water storage in trees such as Baobab and water-melon is an indigenous proactive along the history in western Sudan to store rain water for long dry season.

Disasters are the natural and man made extreme events which exceeds the tolerable magnitude of any event, where adjustment is difficult. These events are catastrophic and results in the loss of life and property on a huge scale. These abnormal events form the headlines to the newspapers and media a world and national level.

These processes are beneficial to the human beings because they form the earth and habitable planet for the evolution of life. However, these processes within a short time limit forms, hazardous and such activities adversely affect the human beings and human related activities on a very large scale.

Amongst the three important types of disasters viz. natural, anthropogenic and technological, the first and the foremost natural disaster mainly includes the geological atmospheric and other related natural types viz. floods, earthquakes, cyclones, tsunamis etc.

INTRODUCTION

The weather conditions during the growing season of crops influences the onset and development of disease. The relationship between weather and plant disease development is the basis for meteopathological forecasting. On the basis of observed or forecast weather conditions, the incidence of plant disease is likely to be predicted.

Such predictions are designed to warn growers of expected significant developments in the manifestation of a particular plant disease. Such disease forecasts, if sufficiently accurate, permit efficient and competent counter measures to be adopted. A short range or medium range of disease forecast, issued at short intervals during the growing of crops, can give guidance to the farmers on the best remedial measures. Growers can decide whether a chemical control measure is needed or not, and if needed then optimum date on which to be applied and similar day to day decisions to fight against disease to minimize the losses to be caused.

The result, of adopting such a plan of weather based control measures, is to reduce the number of chemical sprays to a well timed few, thus giving an equal or even better protection at a lower cost in chemical and labour, and simultaneously reduces losses caused by phytotoxic and mechanical damage to the crop. The reduction in the use of potentially toxic chemical is a matter to be welcomed in the present world, considering the consequences of the widespread use of toxic chemicals.

For nations where agriculture is intrinsically linked to the rhythms of the monsoon, the need for effective climate guidance and resilient farming practices is particularly acute. The preceding chapters have likely underscored the profound impact of climate variability, especially the unpredictable nature of monsoon patterns, on agricultural productivity and the livelihoods of millions. This chapter turns its attention to the essential infrastructure development and enabling policy frameworks required to empower farmers in monsoon-dependent countries to navigate the uncertainties of their climate and build lasting prosperity. Given the unique challenges and opportunities presented by monsoon climates, this chapter will specifically explore the development of infrastructure that supports climate-resilient agriculture in these regions. This includes a focused examination of:

The extreme weather events being experienced at a greater frequency now a days are due to accelerated climate change caused mostly due to global warming. Global warming is basically a change in the climatic conditions of the Earth, brought about by a considerable rise in the near-surface temperature of the planet. Earth’s surface and the troposphere become warmer due to absorption of infrared radiation emitted by the Earth’s surface by Green House Gases(GHGs). The important green house gases include carbon dioxide(CO₂),methane(CH₄) nitrous oxide(N₂O), chloro-?uoro-carbons(CFCs), ozone(O₃) and water vapour(H₂O). Various climate models predict major changes in our weather patterns, environment, and way of life in absence of efforts for substantial reductions in GHG emissions. The CO₂ gas concentration of atmosphere has increased to 385 ppm as against the normal concentration of 300 ppm. The atmosphere contains only 1 % of the total global carbon pool. The undesirable changes can be reversed by increasing soil and eco system carbon pools, increasing mean resident time(MRT) of sequestered carbon and decreasing GHG emission to atmosphere.

Groundwater resources are under stress globally due to various reasons including increasing water demand, impending climate change, industrialization, land use/land cover changes, etc. Adequate sustainable development strategies have to be adopted for the management of groundwater resources. Irrespective of the developmental status of countries all over the world, groundwater serves as a crucial resource for meeting fundamental needs. However, increasing population, water demand, surface water contamination, and recent patterns of climate unpredictability have caused increasing reliance on groundwater as reported by several researchers (Adimalla and Taloor 2020; Aladejana et al. 2020; Cuthbert et al. 2019; Green 2016; Hamed et al. 2018; Jasrotia et al. 2019; Khalaj et al. 2019; Li 2016; McGill et al. 2019; Morsy et al. 2017; Taloor et al. 2020).

Even in India, water scarcity has been reported in many parts, though the country receives relatively higher rainfall. However, the rainfall pattern has changed over the last few years. The country has been experiencing significant spatiotemporal changes in rainfall patterns, leading to fewer rainy days and more extreme rainfall, which many studies have attributed to global climate change and anthropogenic influences. The rainfall variability has substantial impacts on water availability, agricultural productivity, and welfare of the 1.2 billion people in India because agriculture in India feeds about 17.2% of the global population and more than 56% of the agricultural land is rain-fed. Rapid and heavy patterns of rainfall result in the draining of most of the rainfall as surface runoff particularly on higher slopes, and reaches the surface water bodies, thereby reducing the infiltration and subsequent groundwater recharge. These variations in rainfall have ultimately affected the groundwater behavior and availability in many river basins.

Insolation is a term that might sound abstract but is fundamentally the driving force behind nearly all physical processes on Earth, including those within our precious aquatic environments. In this chapter, we will unravel the journey of solar energy from the vast expanse of space to the surfaces of our oceans, lakes, and rivers, and understand its profound influence on the life within. For you, as future professionals in fisheries and aquaculture, grasping the concept of insolation is paramount. The amount of solar radiation reaching a water body dictates its surface temperature, influences the rate of photosynthesis by aquatic plants and algae (the base of many aquatic food webs), affects water stratification, and even plays a role in phenomena like ice formation and melting. Think about it: the warmth of a lake on a sunny day, the intensity of light penetrating the surface waters, the seasonal changes in algal blooms – all are directly linked to the amount and intensity of solar radiation received. Understanding insolation allows us to begin to explain why some aquatic environments are more productive than others, why water temperatures vary geographically and seasonally, and how changes in solar energy input (whether natural or human-induced) can ripple through entire aquatic ecosystems.

Since meteorology and climatology are primarily observational sciences, adequate care has to be taken for getting most representative and accurate observations of weather parameters for their efficient application. This depends on site of observatory, maintenance of observatory, accuracy of instruments, timely measurements of weather parameters, knowledge and responsibility of the observer.

Monitoring of weather conditions, in a country like India, which is climatologically so diverse because of its unique geographical situation is a challenging task. It is done through a large network of observatories of different types. India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune, is entrusted with the collection and keeping the record of weather data collected from different stations and also to train the man power in this specialized area. Weather stations installed in different parts of the country are of different types.

9.1. Balance and Weighing

9.1.1. Principle of Functioning of a Balance

It is one of the important tools used in the laboratory and one should have thorough knowledge about its assembly, use and care, otherwise it may be the initial step for introducing error in any physical or chemical analysis. Every balance has its maximum load limit and sensitivity depending upon its construction.

Essentially balance may be regarded as a rigid beam, BC having a central fulcrum, O and two arms of equal length, d₁, d₂ (Fig.9.1). The both ends of beam have prism edges upon which the balance pans are suspended by means of suitable suspension.

Although Gas Liquid Chromatography (GLC) is widely used technique for pesticide residue analysis, it has some limitations. It can analyze of volatile and thermo stable type of pesticides only because it operate at high temperature. These problems have overcome in HPLC. Although HPLC can analyze both polar as well as non-polar type of compounds but it has less sensitivity than GLC.

Chromatography is a physical method of separation in which components to be separated is distributed between two phases, one of which is stationary while other moves in a definite direction. By separating the sample into individual components, it is easier to identify (qualitative) and measure the amount (quantitative) of the various sample components. There are numerous chromatographic techniques and corresponding instruments.

Gas Liquid Chromatography (GLC) is the most widely used analytical technique for estimation of volatile and thermo stable type of pesticides with speed, accuracy, reproducibility and sensitivity.

The analytical work in a soil-testing laboratory mainly involves standard chemical methods, suitably modified to permit handling of a large number of soil samples with the required degree of accuracy and speed. Many of the analytical operations are carried out more conveniently with help of common as well as sophisticated instruments.

The various instrumental measurements followed in soil and water-testing work in the laboratory can be broadly divided into two groups:

Abstract

In the present study an integrated remote sensing and Geographical Information System (GIS) based methodology is adopted for demarcating the groundwater prospective zones and identification of artificial recharge sites in the Peddavanka watershed, Andhra Pradesh. In this study Shuttle Radar Topograhic Mission (SRTM) digital elevation model (DEM) with spatial resolution of 90 m and Indian Remote Sensing Satellite (IRS-1A), Linear Imaging Self Scanner (LISS- III) satellite data along with other field and collateral data on geology and well inventory have been utilized to generating the Drainage, Slope, Lineaments and Hydro geomorphology of the study area, which are an essential prerequisites for demarcating water resources and identification of recharge sites. Spatial data integration and analyses are carried out in GIS environment.

1.0 Introduction

Groundwater is an important natural resource in arid and semi- arid regions, because most of the places surface water resources are scarce and some places it’s totally absent particularly in hard rock areas. Because in hard rock terrains availability of groundwater is of limited extent and its occurrence is essentially confined to fractured and weathered zones (Saraf and choudhury 1998, Sankar 2002). In these areas groundwater recharge depends on rainfall only. For understanding rainfall recharge mechanism and groundwater management in the watersheds level, first we have to understand the morphometric parameters in the watershed level.

Introduction

Arid Horticulture denotes cultivation of fruits and vegetables under dry and arid regions. Arid region in India is stretched over 39.54 million ha (31.71 million ha is under hot arid region and 7.38 million ha under cold arid region) comprising about 12.02% of the total area of the country. Most of the precipitation in north-western arid region takes place from July to September. Occasional frost has also been a grave issue for horticultural crops, especially, aonla and moringa (Dhandar and Saroj, 2004). The region is exemplified by low and erratic rainfall with extremes of temperature (1–48°C), high wind velocity and sandy soils (Bhandari et al. 2014). Growing of annual crops restricted only a particular season of the year is the merely source of livelihood for the inhabitant of these region. These crops often encounter abiotic stresses like drought, hot and desiccating winds during their growth period leading to poor productivity. These regions have tremendous potential for cultivation of perennial fruit trees.

India is believed to be the native of several economic plant species which have spread to various part of the world. While agriculture continuous to stagnate in underdevelopment and insufficiency in food production. India enjoys variable climatic conditions and multiplicity of topographic feature, elevation and rainfall. The climatic conditions and soil type are so diversified that the various combinations of these factors favor unlimited production of a wide variety of crop plants. 2.1 Introduction

Energy is one of the main input for rural development and economic development. The greater part of the world population lives at low standard and a quarter of the population or about 1.5 billion, have an extremely low standard of life. Energy is one of the essential requirement of the quality of life the people. The industrial development or even large scale food production, water supply, textile manufactures & construction of building and other recreation items are not possible without adequate supply of energy. Therefore, one of the most important tasks is to provide adequate, reliable, convenient and efficient supply of energy, if quality of life of the people is to be raised from its present level of grinding poverty. Table 2.1 project the global primary energy supply in six scenarios i.e A1 - its strong emphasis on oil and natural gas use. A2 - which is coal-intensive. A3 - which emphasises the roles of natural gas, new renewables and nuclear in averting serious problems from emissions. B - Middle course. C1- with its emphasis on energy efficiency improvements, new renewables (especially solar in the longer run), but with nuclear power phased out by 2100 because unable to satisfy its critics and C2 - where nuclear power plays an expanding role.

The Indian hot arid zone occupies an area of 0.32 million km to forming a continuous stretch in the north western states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana and scattered land masses in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, 70 per cent of it falls in western Rajasthan. Low and erratic rainfall, extreme temperatures, long sunshine duration (6.6-10 hours), low relative humidity (30-80 per cent), high wind velocity (9-13 km/h) and high evapo transpiration (1600-1800 mm) and characteristic features of the region. Moreover the soils are poor in nutrients and scarcity of water and recurring droughts are perennial constraints. Despite hostile conditions, the western arid Rajasthan supports a large human and livestock population and a variety of flora and fauna. However, the ever increasing human and livestock population and development activities exert enormous pressure on the natural resource in the region. These areas experience an annual rainfall between 100 and 500 mm with a coefficient of variation varying from 40 to 70%. The region is characterized by low and erratic rainfall with extremes of temperature (1–48 °C), high wind velocity and sandy soils. In dry and arid region, wind erosion affects 13.5% in India (Sehgal et al., 1994, Kar et al.,1959). Wind erosion is very active in the Indian Thar Desert and poses severe multifaceted problems (Dey et al., 2016). Loss of nutrient-rich particles from agricultural fields has been occurring due to suspension of fine particles in air and deposition of eroded soil. Among terrain properties, soil aggregate distribution, surface roughness, soil moisture and vegetation cover are important factors influencing wind erosion. Indiscriminate grazing in the region also further destroys vegetation and exposes the land surface, thus making it more vulnerable to wind erosion.

Integrated plant nutrition system conceptualized by food and agriculture organization is the maintenance or adjustment of soil fertility and of plant nutrient supply to an optimum level for sustaining the desired productivity through optimization of benefits from all possible sources of plant nutrients viz. organic manures, fertilizers, crop residues, compost or nitrogen fixing crops etc. in an integrated manner.

6.1. Introduction

The growing human population presents a number of issues, including food scarcity, malnutrition, inadequate natural resources (land and water) for agricultural production, and environmental deterioration (MacDonald, 2010). Today, viable intensification of agri-production systems can fulfill rising food, nutrition and environmental demands (Pretty and Bharucha, 2014). Production of rice (Oryza sativa L.), a vital element of food security, which feeds nearly half of the world's population, occupies 143 million hectares of land (FAOSTAT, 2023), and uses up to 90% of all irrigation water in Asia (Liu et al., 2018). For instance, it has been determined that systems for producing rice are one of the main industries that wastes water resources and greatly increases greenhouse gas emissions (FAO, 2013). Therefore, it is necessary to look for ways to manage the rice production system more effectively. In paddy rice systems, co cultivating aquatic animals (fish, shrimp, crab, shellfish, and ducks) and rice has been suggested as a way to reduce the risks of environmental pollution/ contamination linked with rice production while simultaneously optimizing the use of land and water resources to provide humans with both grains and meat (Hu et al., 2016; Ahmed and Garnett, 2011). Co-culture systems have drawn more interest recently due to their potential to reduce the stresses associated with environmental and food insecurity.

ABSTRACT

Worldwide reinterpretation of evolutionary history of sedimentary basins had commenced with the introduction of sequence stratigraphic concepts by geoscientists of Exxon. The eustatic sea level controlled deposition in sedimentary basins together with synchronous excursions of many trace elemental and stable isotopic compositions of sedimentary strata have led to a proposition that geographically widely separated sedimentary strata could be classified and correlated with ease by application of sequence stratigraphy and chemostratigraphy, relatively younger branches. This paper reviews the key definitions of these stratigraphic methods, presents an overview on their applicability in petroleum exploration, reservoir characterization and stratigraphic correlation. Considering the man-hours required for interpretation of sequences and chemozones from large quantum of core samples being generated from exploration activities and the possibility of human-error and biased nature of interpretations, an automation scheme involving statistical discrimination is suggested. The statistical discrimination method has been tested to have 76-100 % distinction of depositional units of Recent – Cretaceous in age in terms of sequences, chemozones, lithostratigraphic units, petrographic types and sedimentary microenvironments with 100% reproducibility of predictions. Hence, creation of a large database with well constrained subpopulations and putting it to use for recognition of depositional units and correlation of strata and reservoir characterization is suggested which may reduce operational inconsistencies and improve exploration strategies.

If any malevolent weather situation that happens during a crop season, whether it is at the beginning of the crop season or at the mid of the crop season or at the terminal of the crop season or at the whole of the crop season, the productivity of the crops raised would be under stake. In practice the irrigated crop area is lesser than the area under unirrigated crop in India in any region except the regions where irrigation is routed through perennial rivers. Normally the production from unirrigated crop is 30 to 40 per cent of the same crop grown under irrigated condition in an environment in the same season.

In India, in a region or in a taluk, if the irrigated area is lesser than 30 per cent of total cultivable area, there is every opportunity for the occurrence of food shortage. That means assured production depends upon irrigation rather than managing the crops with seasonal rainfall alone. This clearly indicates that the higher probability of occurrence of crop production risks falls under rainfed/dry land situation. The crop production risk is also common to irrigated area like unirrigated crop but the intensity gets varied. In this context one example that happened in India can be quoted. During December- January of 1982, with the occurrence of heavy rain/snow as a result of prevalence of western disturbance weather system, the wheat crop stood for harvest at Punjab got damaged with a loss of 124 crore of rupees. If this was anticipated earlier through weather forecast development, (which is common in all developed countries) and communicated to the farmers in advance, then the yield loss would have been reduced by following some tactical decisions to be taken either by the farmers or by the concerned Government. At that time, India did not have medium range weather forecast system and hence Indian farmers met with greater losses.

Since students spend a significant portion of their day at school, mutual respect and tolerance between students and teachers are essential for a productive learning environment. Over recent years, the education system has evolved rapidly, incorporating new teaching methods and strategies as alternatives to traditional models. However, traditional views often assert that “learners must submit themselves to teachers” (Menges, 1977, p.5), implying that teacher authority is crucial for student learning. Hurt, Scott, and McCroskey (1978) argued that a certain degree of teacher authority is always present in the classroom, and its usage tends to reinforce the need for more control. This perspective highlighted the critical role of the classroom as a space for students’ educational success (Anderson & Burns, 1989; Borich, 1988; Fraser & Walberg, 1991; Walberg, 1968). Positive teacher-student relationships are essential for fostering a sense of belonging and encouraged cooperative participation in classroom activities (Hughes & Chen, 2011, p.278). Such relationships not only engage students in learning but also enhance their holistic development, social skills, and confidence. As we know, historical institutions such as Takshila and Nalanda exemplify ancient centers of learning that combined theoretical and practical education. Takshila, located in present-day Pakistan, was one of the earliest centers of higher learning in ancient India, offering diverse subjects including medicine, engineering, astrology, and statecraft. Nalanda, in present-day Bihar, was a prominent center for Buddhist learning, focusing on philosophy, logic, and practical subjects like agriculture and technology. These ancient educational hubs were pivotal in advancing knowledge and contributing to the economic and intellectual development of their societies. The principles of vocational education and holistic development emphasized in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 align with these historical practices (Makam, 2022). Effective implementation of NEP 2020 requires a fresh approach through comprehensive teacher training and rigorous evaluation of expectations and feedback focused on Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) is focused upon to create a relation with ancient practices.

While traditional yoga aimed at spiritual liberation, Hatha yoga was mainly concerned with physical and mental control, often seen as preparatory for more profound meditative practices. In the modern world, yoga has evolved into a global wellness practice, emphasizing physical postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama) and meditation. The chapter will delve into the fundamental physics governing energy exchange at the Earth’s surface and how water is managed within the soil profile. These concepts are crucial for understanding microclimate, evapotranspiration, and overall water availability for crops. This chapter explores the intricate interactions between incoming solar radiation, its transformation into various energy forms at the Earth’s surface, and the dynamic movement and storage of water within the soil. Understanding these processes is vital for agricultural meteorology, as they directly influence temperature, humidity, and water availability for plant growth.The Earth’s surface, particularly a vegetated land surface, continuously exchanges energy with the atmosphere. The Surface Energy Budget quantifies these energy fluxes, explaining how incoming solar radiation is partitioned. It operates on the principle of conservation of energy: the energy received must equal the energy expended or stored (Fig. 6.1). The Earth’s surface energy budget numbers derived from Kiehl-Trenberth 1997. The surface of the Earth is cooled 40 W/m2 by radiation; this part of surface radiation is radiated straight into Space. 324 W/m2 of all outgoing surface radiation returns nearly simultaneously as back radiation. In the last two decades global climate change has perceptible and marked impact on the monsoon pattern in India. Delayed and inadequate monsoon has become a recurrent feature and the country is in the grip of drought-flood cycles. Right from the beginning of large scale irrigation that brought green revolution and food self sufficiency to the country, there is a strong feeling that full potential of rivers of the country is not tapped (Table 1).

In recent decades, integrating trees with crops for food and wood production has received considerable attention in both tropical (Garrity et al., 2010) and temperate regions (Palma et al., 2007). The growing of trees in combination with the agricultural crop is a land management practice that farmers have been practicing since the ancient period. Seasonal agricultural/horticulture crops, woody perennial trees (multipurpose), and/or animals are major components of various agroforestry systems. According to Sanchez (1995), the science of agroforestry revolves around four aspects: competitiveness, complexity, sustainability, and profitability, and all of these factors must be balanced in order to produce beneficial outcomes. In fact, agroforestry is significantly assisting in meeting the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) such as poverty and hunger eradication, improved health, nutrition, and education for people, gender equality, and environmental sustainability, particularly in developing countries (Garrity, 2004, 2006).

Historical perspective: Planting of single crops or mono-cultural agriculture—is a recent invention of the industrial agricultural complex (Hirst, 2019). While unequivocal archaeological evidence is difficult to come by, it’s believed that most agricultural field systems in the past involved some form of mixed cropping. That’s because of even botanical evidence of plant residues such as starches or phytoliths of multiple crops are discovered in an ancient fields (Hirst, 2019). Mixed cropping, also known as polyculture, or co-cultivation, is a type of agriculture that involves planting two or more crop plants simultaneously in the same field so that they grow together. The primary reason for prehistoric multi or mixed cropping probably had more to do with the needs of the farmer’s family and perhaps to avoid crop failure. It’s possible that certain plants adapted to multi-cropping over time disappeared as a result of the domestication process (Hirst 2016).

Some historians of agriculture believe that it was women who first domesticated crop plants and there by initiated the art and science of farming. While men went out hunting in search of food, women started collecting seeds from the native flora and began cultivating those of interest from the point of view of food, feed, fodder, fiber and fuel. This view is strengthened by the fact that women have been traditionally seed selectors. Even today this tradition has continued in many parts of the developing world. Women have played and continue to play a pivotal role in the conservation of basic life support system such as land, water, flora and fauna. They have protected the health of the soil through organic recycling and promoted crop security through the maintenance of varietal diversity and genetic resistance. In many remote areas agriculture is largely in hands of women. Men tend use to go to towns and cities in search of salaried jobs for fulfillment of family income. Therefore, without total intellectual and physical participation of women, it will not be possible to popularize alternative systems of land management for shifting cultivation, arrest gene and soil erosion, and promote the care of the soil and the health of economic plants and farm animals. Women also tend to look at problems in their totality from the sowing of the crop to its ultimate utilization either as food, feed or raw material for industry. Since they are usually incharge of marketing, they generally possess a clear understanding of market preferences and prejudices. Therefore, for an economically and ecologically sustainable agriculture the involvement of women farmers and farm women (agriculture farmers with and without assets) in the process of modernization of farming practices and village industries is absolutely essential. Horticulture is a major part of Indian agriculture, natural foods of man, fruits and vegetables provide protective nutrients like vitamins and minerals besides, some high quality sugars, proteins, oils and fats. Although belated, their importance has now been recognized in India not only to provide the much needed balanced nutrition and gainful occupation to our populace but also to develop viable internal and export trade. Fruits like banana, mango and minors fruit like mahuva, chironji, rayan etc. vegetables like potato being energy rich are considered prominent food crops e.g. banana can produce as high as 37 million calories per hectare. Unfortunately the component of fruits and vegetables in Indian diet is hardly six percent which should be raised at least five times so that the per capita per day consumption becomes 85 g. fruits, 75 – 125 g. leafy vegetables 85 g. other vegetable and 85 g. roots and tubers. Interpretation of Drainage Patterns Through Aerial Photographs

Aerial photographs can provide a useful tool for interpreting the drainage patterns of a landscape. Drainage patterns are formed by the natural movement of water across the land and the way in which it flows from high to low areas, creating channels and streams that eventually converge into larger rivers and bodies of water. Different types of drainage patterns can be identified through aerial photographs, which can help to understand the underlying geology and topography of the landscape.

Here are some of the different drainage patterns that can be identified through aerial photographs:

1. Dendritic pattern

This pattern resembles the branches of a tree and is the most common type of drainage pattern. It occurs in areas where the underlying rock or soil is uniform and has no preferred direction of erosion. The streams converge into larger rivers, which may flow in a particular direction.

Rock

A rock is a solid, naturally occurring substance composed of minerals or mineraloids. It is typically formed through geological processes, such as cooling and solidification of molten lava or magma, or by the deposition and compaction of sediment over time. Rocks are classified into three main types based on their origin: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.

Sedimentary rocks: Formed from the accumulation and compaction of sediment, such as sand, mud, or organic matter, over long periods. Examples include sandstone, limestone, and shale.

Rocks serve as the building blocks of the Earth's crust and are an essential part of the geological processes that shape the planet. Rocks are also used in various practical applications, such as construction, road building, and the production of minerals and resources.

Structural landforms are landforms that are created due to the underlying geological structures of the earth's crust. These structures can include folds, faults, and other features that have been formed due to the tectonic forces that have shaped the earth's surface over millions of years.

Examples of structural landforms include mountain ranges, plateaus, and rift valleys. Mountain ranges are formed due to the upliftment of the earth's crust along a fault line or due to the folding of the earth's crust. Quantum Geographical Information System (QGIS) is an open source GIS environment. The software package is available freely in web https://www.qgis.org/en/site/forusers/download.html) and can be installed in a variety of computer platform e.g. Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, Android etc. Latest information on QGIS is available inhttp://www.qgis.org/en/site/. Basically, the QGIS GUI is divided into five areas: (i) Menu Bar, (ii) Tool Bar (iii) Map Legend, (iv) Map View and (v) Status Bar. QGIS allows users to define a global and project-wise coordinate reference system (CRS) for layers without a pre-defined CRS. It also allows the user to define custom coordinate reference systems and supports on-the-fly (OTF) projection of vector and raster layers. All of these features allow the user to display layers with different CRSs and have them overlay properly. QGIS has support for approximately 2,700 known CRSs. Definitions for each CRS are stored in a SQLite database that is installed with QGIS. The CRSs available in QGIS are based on those defined by the European Petroleum Search Group (EPSG) and the Institute Geographique National de France (IGNF) and are largely abstracted from the spatial reference tables used in Geospatial Data Abstraction Library (GDAL). For Post GIS layers, QGIS use the spatial reference identifier that was specified when the layer was created. For data supported by OGR, QGIS relies on the presence of a recognized means of specifying the CRS. In the following sections, few basic GIS analysis using example spatial data from arid western India is discussed. However, readers are advised to go through different tools and functions available in QGIS after installation of the system in personal computers.

Agriculture, the bedrock of human civilization, has always been intimately intertwined with the vagaries of weather. From the earliest cultivation efforts, the success or failure of harvests has been profoundly influenced by temperature, rainfall, sunlight, wind, and humidity. In ancient times, the acquisition of weather information for agricultural planning was a deeply empirical and often culturally embedded process.
Without thermometers, rain gauges, or barometers, early agricultural communities relied heavily on direct observation of natural phenomena. They meticulously watched the sky, noting the color and movement of clouds, the intensity and duration of rainfall, and the prevailing wind patterns. The appearance of halos around the sun or moon, the frequency of lightning, and even the behavior of animals were often interpreted as harbingers of impending weather changes.

Across the globe, mankind managed to establish different civilizations with dissimilar cultural and material advancements much later. But then invariably all civilizations considered water holy and water bodies were sacred places. Holy wells, springs, rivers, cenotaphs were held in awe all through human history. The mysterious properties of water are studied from time immemorial. And water indeed is a strange compound! Availability of water for consumption and agriculture has determined the zenith and nadir of surviving and extinct civilizations.

Ancient Indian temples as part of design, have a prominent sacred well or a pond with an associated purana/myth narrating the mystical properties of the theertha / waterbody. It is still is a living tradition. In the west wishing wells survive from remote antiquity.

As global climate change becomes an increasingly urgent concern, the search for sustainable and renewable energy sources has intensified. Among the alternatives to fossil fuels, biofuels have emerged as a promising solution due to their potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on petroleum. Biofuels are derived from organic matter, such as crops, agricultural residues and other biomass, which can be converted into energy sources like ethanol, biodiesel, and biogas. For instance, crops like corn and soybeans contain oil extracts that can be processed into biofuels, offering a renewable and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fossil fuels (Demirbas, 2009). However, the potential of biofuels extends beyond these conventional sources, as researchers explore a wide range of organic materials that can be sustainably regrown and harvested, minimizing ecological impacts (Naik et al., 2010). Biofuels have gained significant importance in both developed and developing economies, driven by their potential to enhance energy security and reduce carbon footprints. In 2023, the United States led global biofuel production with 15,550 million gallons, followed by Brazil with 8,260 million gallons. India ranked third, producing 1,430 million gallons of bioethanol and achieving an E11.7 blend rate during the 2022–2023 period. This blend was sourced from various feedstocks, including sugarcane juice (5%), cane molasses (5%), and damaged food grains (DFG) (1.7%). Historically, India’s ethanol production has relied heavily on sugarcane molasses, but the National Biofuel Policy (NBP) of 2018 has been instrumental in promoting the use of biofuels to reduce fossil fuel dependence, mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, and strengthen energy security (Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, 2018). India, the third-largest energy-consuming nation globally, faces considerable challenges due to its heavy dependence on imported oil, posing risks to both economic stability and strategic security. With its share of global energy consumption projected to double by 2050, the country is actively seeking domestic alternatives to curb this reliance. Ethanol, produced within India, has emerged as a viable substitute. Since its initial pilot in 2001, ethanol-blended petrol has demonstrated notable environmental advantages, with every 10 million liters reducing CO2 emissions by 8,000–17,000 tonnes compared to conventional

1.1 Forest Resources

Forest resources usually provide the raw materials for homes, workplaces, the books and newspapers, and the packaging that contains food and other products of our labor. Forest ecosystems supply our water, maintain our climate, and help purify the air, protect soils, and provide for wilderness experiences. Forests provide habitat for wildlife, and serve as preserves of biological diversity. Forests are sources of food, fuel and medicine for people all over the world. Forests shape the recreational landscape, help stabilize our farms, and enhance our cities.

About 30 per cent of the world’s total land areas are covered by forest with the area of 3.9 billion hectares. Nearly 47 percent of the world’s forests are in the tropics, 33 percent in the boreal zone, 11 percent in the temperate zones, and 9 percent in sub-tropical areas. The 94 million hectares of forest lost over the ten-year period, represented about 2 per cent of the world’s total forest cover, or an area larger than Venezuela. Two thirds of the world’s forests are located in ten countries: the Russian Federation, Brazil, Canada, the United States, China, Australia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Indonesia, Angola and Peru. Most of the deforestation work was performed in natural tropical forests, which lost 14.2 million hectares a year over the last decade. Africa and South America have suffered the most deforestation.

Africa was the region with the highest deforestation in the world, which lost 5.3 million hectares of forest per year in the 1990s. Forests are a major factor in the climate change issue. Forest ecosystems contain more than half of all terrestrial carbon, and account for about 80 per cent of the exchange of carbon between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere. Deforestation in the 1980s may have accounted for a quarter of all human-induced carbon emissions, the second greatest emitter after fossil fuels. Forest plantations comprise 5 percent of the world’s forests. Asia has the largest area of plantations, accounting for 62 per cent of the world total. China accounts for 24 percent of that total and India, 18 per cent. Plantations supply about 35 percent of the world’s round wood. The area of forest plantations increased by an average of 3 to 4 million hectares per year during the 1990s. Half of this increase was the result of afforestation on land previously under non-forest land use, whereas the other half resulted from conversion of natural forest. There are reports that 12 percent of the world’s forests, or about 480 million hectares, are in protected areas.
