Introduction

A geographic information system or geographical information system (GIS) is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of spatial or geographical data. The acronym GIS is sometimes used for geographic information science (GIScience) to refer to the academic discipline that studies geographic information systems and is a large domain within the broader academic discipline of geoinformatics. What goes beyond a GIS is a spatial data infrastructure, a concept that has no such restrictive boundaries. In a general sense, the term describes any information system that integrates stores, edits, analyzes, shares, and displays geographic information. GIS applications are tools that allow users to create interactive queries (user-created searches), analyze spatial information, edit data in maps, and present the results of all these operations. Geographic information science is the science underlying geographic concepts, applications, and systems.

GIS is a broad term that can refer to a number of different technologies, processes, and methods. It is attached to many operations and has many applications related to engineering, planning, management, transport/logistics, insurance, telecommunications, and business. For that reason, GIS and location intelligence applications can be the foundation for many location-enabled services that rely on analysis and visualization. GIS can relate unrelated information by using location as the key index variable. Locations or extents in the Earth space–time may be recorded as dates/times of occurrence, and x, y, and z coordinates representing, longitude, latitude, and elevation, respectively. All Earth-based spatial–temporal location and extent references should, ideally, be relatable to one another and ultimately to a “real” physical location or extent. This key characteristic of GIS has begun to open new avenues of scientific inquiry.

1.1 Introduction
Meteorology, at its heart, is the scientific endeavor dedicated to understanding the Earth’s atmosphere and the myriad phenomena that occur within it. More than just the art of predicting whether it will rain tomorrow, meteorology is a robust interdisciplinary science. It intricately weaves together principles from physics, chemistry, and mathematics to unravel the complexities of atmospheric processes. From the gentle caress of a breeze to the formidable power of a hurricane, meteorology seeks to explain the underlying mechanisms that drive our ever-changing weather and long-term climate patterns.
The study of meteorology encompasses a wide array of atmospheric characteristics. Meteorologists delve into the composition of the atmosphere, examining the various gases and tiny particles known as aerosols that reside within it. They also investigate its vertical structure, distinguishing between layers like the troposphere, where most weather occurs, and the stratosphere, home to the ozone layer. The motion of the atmosphere, manifested as wind systems ranging from local gusts to global circulations, is a central focus. Furthermore, meteorology explores the thermodynamics of the atmosphere, including how heat is transferred and how temperature changes, as well as the role of water in the atmosphere, from humidity to the formation of clouds and precipitation – the realm of atmospheric hydrology. Even the captivating
optical phenomena we sometimes witness, such as rainbows and halos, fall under the purview of meteorological inquiry.

Introduction

R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. It is a GNU project which is similar to the S language and environment which was developed at Bell Laboratories (formerly AT&T, now Lucent Technologies) by John Chambers and colleagues. R can be considered as a different implementation of S. There are some important differences, but much code written for S runs unaltered under R.

R provides a wide variety of statistical (linear and nonlinear modelling, classical statistical tests, time-series analysis, classification, clustering) and graphical techniques, and is highly extensible. The S language is often the vehicle of choice for research in statistical methodology, and R provides an Open Source route to participation in that activity. In a nutshell, R is an open-source software environment for statistical computing that is rapidly becoming the tool of choice for data analysis in the life sciences and elsewhere. It’s developed by a large international community of scientists and programmers and is at the forefront of new developments in statistical computing.

Introduction

R is one of the most popular platforms for data analysis and visualization currently available. It is free, open-source software, with versions for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux operating systems. R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics, similar to the S language originally developed at Bell Labs. It’s an open source solution to data analysis that’s supported by a large and active worldwide research community. But there are many popular statistical and graphing packages available e.g. Microsoft Excel, SAS, IBM SPSS, Stata, and Minitab etc., however R has many interesting features so why it is mostly followed by researchers and academicians. Few of the major features of R are given below:

R has become the world-wide language for statistics, predictive analytics, and data visualization. R is not limited to statistics; it provides a wide range of tools for spectroscopy. It offers a wide range of methodologies for spectral data preprocessing, spectral analysis, multivariate analysis of the spectral data, machine leraning models for prediction of properties, and visualization. As an open source project, it’s freely available for a range of platforms, including Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. An integrated development environment (IDE) for R, R Studio, allows interactive execution of R functions with user interface. RStudio is available in two formats - RStudio Desktop and RStudio Server - both available in free and fee-based (commercial) editions.
1.1. Download and Install R
The R software setup files can be downloaded from any of the widely distributed Comprehensive R Archive Network (CARN). To download R, go to url: https:// www.r-project.org/ and choose your preferred CRAN mirror, a location close to you and follow the steps to download and installation of R and Rtools.
1.2. Download and Install R Studio
Download and Install the R Studio once the base R is installed. Go to https://www. rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/ and click on download R Studio Desktop with Open Source license.

Introduction

The term “Remote Sensing” was coined in 1950s by Ms. Evelyn Pruitt, a geographer with the U.S. Office of Naval Research, and the term is now commonly used to describe as the science and art of identifying, observing, and measuring an object on the earth surface, without having any direct contact. This process involves the detection and measurement of radiation of different wavelengths reflected or emitted from distant objects or materials through which they may be identified and categorized by class/type, substance, and spatial distribution (National Aeronautics and Space Administration—NASA). Remote sensing technology has been widely applied in various applications such as water resources, agriculture, geological studies, forestry, land use, resource exploration, etc.

Elements of Remote Sensing

The remote sensing process involves an interaction between the incident radiation and the targets of interest, exemplified by the use of imaging systems in which the following seven elements are involved; however, remote sensing also involves sensing of emitted energy and using non-imaging sensors

Introduction
Remote sensing is the art and science of recording, measuring, and analyzing information about a phenomenon from a distance. Humans with the aid of their eyes, noses, and ears are constantly seeing, smelling, and hearing things from a distance as they move through an environment. Thus, humans are naturally designed to be remote sensors. In order to study large areas of the Earth’s surface geographers use devices known as remote sensors. These sensors are mounted on platforms such as helicopters, planes, and satellites that make it possible for the sensors to observe the Earth from above.

Definition
Remote sensing can be defined as any process whereby information is gathered about an object, area or phenomenon without being in contact with it. Our eyes are an excellent example of a remote sensing device. We are able to gather information about our surroundings by gauging the amount and nature of the reflectance of visible light energy from some external source (such as the sun or a light bulb) as it reflects off objects in our field of view. Contrast this with a thermometer, which must be in contact with the phenomenon it measures, and thus is not a remote sensing device.

The Renewable energy (also called green energy) is generally defined as energy that comes from resources which are naturally replenished on a human timescale. In other words, Renewable energy is energy derived from natural sources that are replenished at a higher rate than they are consumed. The most widely used renewable energy types are solar energy, wind energy,biomass energy, and hydroenergy.
India has made significant progress in the renewable energy sector, with renewable energy accounting for 43.12% of the country’s total installed power generation capacity. Globally, India ranks 4th in overall renewable energy capacity, 4th in wind power with 46.65 GW, and 5th in solar photovoltaic power with 85.47 GW. The country has surpassed 200 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity which includes 85.47 GW of solar power, 46.93 GW of large hydropower, 46.66 GW of wind power, 10.95 GW of biopower, 5.00 GW of small hydropower, and 0.60 GW of waste-to-energy capacity.
Presently India has set ambitious renewable energy targets. By 2030, the country aims to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity and meet at least 50% of its total energy requirements through renewable sources. These efforts position India as a global leader in the transition towards sustainable and clean energy.
In recent years, India’s renewable energy capacity has grown rapidly. As per the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE, 2025), the country’s total installed renewable energy capacity (excluding large hydro) reached 220.10 GW by March 2025. When large hydro and nuclear power are included, the non-fossil fuel capacity has crossed 242.8 GW, representing over 50 percent of India’s total

Soil fertility -importance

From edaphological point of view soil is a medium for plant growth. It holds and nourishes the plants. Soil fertility refers to the ability of soil to supply plant nutrients. Soil fertility and fertilizers are very much closely related terms; and cannot be neglected one from the other in their function. Soil fertility acts as a ‘SINK’ where in plants can draw nutrients for maximum productivity, where as fertilizer, acts as a ‘SOURCE’ wherein we can apply continuously different nutrients. The importance of soil fertility and nutrient management is being increasingly recognized in all countries recently to meet the demand for food and other agricultural raw materials. Intensive use of fertilizer, intensive cropping and high yielding seeds have no doubt increased the food production and reduced the food shortage but it has also ushered in innumerable problems of soil fertility, soil and water pollution. On the other hand, fast depletion of nutrients due to over exploitation, a wide spread deficiency of N, P, K and S coupled with micronutrients deficiencies specially Zn, B and Mo is taking place. Further deforestation, shifting cultivation, burning of crop residues, trees, bushes, grasses and cow dung, soil erosion, nutrient losses and imbalanced nutrient application, leaching losses etc., have aggravated the depletion of soil fertility status. The productivity of Indian agriculture solely depends on scientific management of soil fertility along with judicious and efficient use of fertilizers integrated with organic sources.

1.1 Introduction to Sustainable Energy
The idea of sustainable energy has come to light in the twenty-first century as the globe struggles with rising energy demands, environmental degradation, and the menacing threat of climate change. It offers hope and a way forward for a more promising future. A major change in the production, distribution, and consumption of energy resources is what sustainable energy entails. It is a paradigm that includes a range of clean and renewable energy sources, technologies, and methods with the goal of supplying our energy demands with the least amount of harm to the environment (Andrews and Shabani, 2014). 1.2 Importance of Sustainable Energy Sources Sustainable energy is of paramount importance due to several interconnected reasons listed below and shown in Figure 1:
1.2.1 Environmental Concerns: For many years, conventional fossil fuelbased
energy sources like coal, oil, and natural gas have formed the foundation of our energy system. But as they burn, greenhouse gases (GHGs) mostly carbon dioxide (CO2) are released into the environment (Hosseini and Wahid, 2016). These greenhouse gases are the main causes of climate change, which raises global temperatures, brings on harsh weather, and raises sea levels. Conversely, sustainable energy sources are crucial for reducing climate change because they emit little or no greenhouse gases when in use.
1.2.2 Finite Nature of Fossil Fuels: Because fossil fuels are limited resources,
their stocks are running out quickly. The task that follows is to ensure that future generations have access to economical and dependable energy sources. Because they are renewable or endless, sustainable energy sources provide a solution to the problem of energy security (Su-Ungkavatin et al., 2023).
1.2.3 Economic Benefits: Making the switch to renewable energy can be
very profitable. It can improve national energy security and lessen trade deficits by fostering innovation, generating jobs, and lowering dependency on energy imports. Furthermore, because they frequently have lower operating and maintenance costs than fossil fuel-based systems, sustainable energy technologies can result in cost savings over time (Shafiei et al., 2015).

1.1 Man’s place in Nature

All religions of the world share the view that man is the supreme being among God’s creations. He is the only one among many creatures to enjoy nature’s beauties and bounties. Nature is given to him so as to make responsible and judicious use of it. No religion justifies the most destructive attitude the modern man has developed towards his environment. All religions urge man to treat nature as a God-given gift, stating that God is omnipresent in the manifestations of the nature. It is irreligious for man to expect miracles and exploit the environment. Man must be confronted with the reality that struggle is essential for life rather than “struggle for existence.”

1.1 Water and its Importance

Water has played a crucial role in sustainace of lives of all living beings including animals, plants and human beings in this earth since time immemorial. It is there since the creation of the nature and will probably remain till the destruction of the nature. It is used in multifarious uses including domestic, industrial, agricultural, recreational and many other uses. It occurs in the nature in practically three forms i.e. solid, liquid and gaseous forms. All the three forms are important to living beings; but the liquid form of water is more beneficial. The weight of the water helps in running hydroelectric turbines, the density of water helps in floating the ships, the steam energy produced by heating the water helps to run the locomotives and thus is beneficial in many ways. It is considered as the most important resource of the society. It has become part and partial in our life so that we cannot live without water. That is why water is called as life.

Climate Change has emerged as one of the most serious environmental concerns of recent times. The most imminent climate change is increase in atmospheric temperature due to increased levels of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), nitrous oxide (N₂O) and hydrochlorofluoro carbons (HCFCs). Because of increasing concentrations of the greenhouse gases in atmosphere, there is much concern about future changes in the climate system viz., Atmosphere, Lithosphere, Biosphere, Hydrosphere and Cryosphere. Direct or indirect effects on the society linked sectors like water, forestry, agriculture, animal agriculture, fisheries, land and marine biodiversity and health due to climate change/variability are many-fold and economic impact of climate change is enormous. The recurrent drought and desertification threaten seriously the livelihood of over 1.2 billion people who depend on land for most of their needs.

Agriculture encounters a complex dynamic system of natural conditions. The meteorological factors among these natural conditions play a pivotal role so far as agriculture is concerned. The rate of growth and development of a bio-system is largely depending upon its ambient temperature and moisture. The plant productivity per unit area, total production, quality of the produce, operational efficiency as well as econometrics are solely governed by the meteorological parameters. Therefore, their through understanding including the computation and the measurement techniques is absolutely essential. It is no less important to have sufficient workable information on weather phenomena as well as climatic resources to determine realizable potential and an appropriate solution for a number of problems faced in agriculture.

 Def : The science which investigates the history of the earth is known as geology.

 Following are the important branches of geology.

1.Coal Geology : it is related with natural gas, coal deposits and their formation.

2.Crystallography : includes the crystal and atomic structure of the mineral. 3. Drilling Technology : it is related with the cores, core logging and coorelation of the lithology.

4.Engineering Geology and Surveying : it is related with engineering aspects of the earth.

“Hydrology is the science that treats the waters of the earth, their occurrence, circulation and distribution, their chemical and physical properties, and their reaction with their environment, including their relation with living things. The domain of hydrology embraces the full life history of water on the earth.” (Federal Council for Science and Technology, “Scientific Hydrology”, Washington, 1962)

This definition puts in a nutshell what is most often inadequately done before undertaking exploitation of water resources. In short, it is the scientific inputs that are likely to be missed while planning water resources management projects. It is the “full life history of water” part of the above definition that is of specific relevance to the theme of this book, Isotope Hydrology.

Conventional hydrology is strong on measurement and quantification of different parts of the hydrological cycle (Fig.1.1), be it precipitation, run-off, evaporation, transpiration, infiltration, groundwater dynamics etc. Through chemistry and isotopes, we try to understand the processes themselves in order to delineate the history of that part of the hydrological cycle that is being studied. For example, if we are measuring river flow, we would like to know the contribution of different components; base flow, rainfall run-off and snow melt, if any.

Let’s see what we know and what do not know in the conventional hydrological practice. We know surface waters evaporate, form into clouds and precipitation occurs under favourable weather conditions. What we often do not know is the source of moisture, oceanic or inland.

Meteorology is derived from the Greek word meteoro which means above the earth’s surface; i.e., the atmosphere. The state of the atmosphere experienced at a given time, in any location on the surface of the earth is known as weather. Thus meteorology is the scientific study of the atmosphere or the weather. It is a branch of physics dealing with atmosphere and it is often quoted as the ‘physics of the lower atmosphere’. The main focus of meteorology is to understand the weather processes and forecast the weather. Solar radiation, the air mass and moisture are the three key ingredients that make up weather. The exchange of heat, moisture and momentum between the earth’s surface and the atmosphere determines the characteristic of weather. The observable weather events are known as meteorological phenomena and are defined by a set of variables called weather elements. Atmospheric temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity, precipitation, cloudiness, wind and visibility, etc. are examples of such weather elements. The weather elements are not separate entities. They are closely related with each other and are highly variable in nature. Meteorology explains and analyses the changes of these weather elements.

Meteorology

The major subdivisions of meteorology are dynamic meteorology (or atmospheric dynamics) and physical meteorology (or atmospheric physics). The dynamic meteorology is concerned with the analysis and interpretation of the three-dimensional, time-varying, macro scale motions and energy transformations in the atmosphere. The science of dynamic meteorology is meant to develop models based on the hydrodynamic and thermodynamic equations. The physical meteorology is concerned with the processes that alter the physical properties and the chemical composition of air parcels as they move through the atmosphere.

1.1 General

Access to energy is a crucial enabling condition for achieving sustainable development. Prudent energy policies and research can play an important role in steering both industrialized and developing countries onto more sustainable energy development paths. Specifically, they can strengthen the three pillars of sustainable development: the economy, by boosting productivity, social welfare, by improving living standards and enhancing safety and security, and the environment, by reducing indoor and outdoor pollution and remediating environmental degradation.

1.2 Energy and it’s Requirement

Energy in any form is necessary to meet many of our requirements. It’s varying definitions shows the importance of energy in our life.

Crop production broadly depends on the fertility of the soil where a crop is raised. There are several factors like the kind and quality of seed, climate, water supply, and plant protection measures etc. that affect the crop production. Among these factors, the fertility status of the soil largely determines the ultimate yield even if all these factors are optimum for crop production. A clear distinction should be made between soil fertility and soil productivity. Soil fertility deals with the inherent capacity of soil to provide nutrients in adequate amounts and in proper balance, for the growth of specified plants when other growth factors such as light, water and temperature, and the physical condition of the soil are favourable. Soil productivity is concerned with the capability of soil to produce a specified plant or plant parts or a sequence of plants under well defined and specified systems of management inputs and environmental conditions, viz. climatic conditions. It does not mean that a fertile soil is always productive. A fertile soil, under a bad management system, may be unproductive for a crop. In this book, plant nutrient elements and their available forms, functions and deficiency symptoms are briefly described for the better understanding of soil testing and fertilizer recommendation.

1.1 Weather

Firstly, what is weather? Simply, the conditions in the atmosphere above the earth is called weather. It refers to the conditions such as wind, rain and temperature, prevailing at a particular location during periods of hours or days. We often ask “what’s the weather like today”? Any individual can answer to this question as it requires only a short term experience or say exposure to the atmosphere. The TV news forecasters predict weather each day and inform about the temperature, cloudiness, humidity, or possibility of storm in the next few days. Weather is localised, say, it’s a hot and cloudy weather in one part of the country and dry and windy on the other part.

1.1.1 What are the factors that influence weather?

Before we try to understand the factors that influence weather, we must understand what the components that describe a weather conditions are? Is it the rains, or the air temperature or both? The answer to this question is not so easy, and it’s a bit complicated. There are many components that constitute weather. Weather components include rain, cloud cover, sunshine, winds, hail, snow, sleet, storms, thunderstorms, heat waves and many more. These components are sometimes referred as weather parameters or climate elements. Each of these components define weather patterns of a particular area. These components determine the status of local atmospheric conditions. Again, as a basic definition, weather is the state of the atmosphere and majority of weather phenomena occur in the lowest layer of the atmosphere, called as the troposphere. Does it mean that ground conditions such as the topography, water bodies and vegetation of a particular area has nothing to do with it? No, it is not so. The state of the atmosphere is subjected to various processes taking place not only in the atmosphere but also in the ocean, the sea-ice, the vegetation, etc. Weather parameters or the components of weather form a sequence of events, and the influences are far reaching and they do not remain solely in the atmosphere. For example, terrestrial radiation impacts the air temperature, air pressure and humidity. The terrestrial location also influences the cloud formation. The clouds may or may not turn into precipitation depending on the outcome (cloud or rain), which is by and large governed by troposphere. Likewise, a lack of precipitation affects not only weather conditions, but also soil moisture conditions that may result in lowering of water levels (ground water table) in soil. Wind speed and direction are governed by the atmospheric pressure and air temperature. So, all these parameters or components are interrelated and the weather conditions are the outcome of their interactions. Therefore, we can say that, the three main components of weather are temperature, precipitation and solar radiation. These components are influenced by different factors.

1.0 Overview

Natural resources sustain life and are critical for economic development of nations. In developing countries like India where more than half the population is rural, economic development is inextricably linked with agricultural development. In these countries, the food and livelihoods security of the poor are critically associated with access to the services provided by the natural resources - land, soil, water, biodiversity and climate resources. The natural resources are finite, and with increasing population, economic growth, urbanization, and demands for food and other agricultural commodities, these are being increasingly strained. As a result, the productive capacity of the natural resource base is shrinking and deteriorating. Sustaining the productive capacity of natural resources for future generations, while meeting the food and other demands of the growing populations, is the major development challenge of the twenty first century.

In India, during the last forty years the net sown area under agriculture has remained nearly constant at 141 million ha. In the same period, the population has more than doubled (from 541 million in 1970 to 1186 million in 2010) and per capita income grew by more than 3.5 times (from Rs 14824 in 1970 to Rs 53331 in 2010). As available land resources for agriculture are finite, increases in agricultural production to meet the growing demands of the population have to come from intensification of agriculture on the same lands. As a result, the quality of soils on these lands is gradually deteriorating both at the farm and ecosystem levels. The major threats to soil quality come from loss of organic carbon, erosion, nutrient imbalance, compaction, salinization, water-logging, decline in soil bio-diversity, urbanization, and contamination with heavy metals. More than 100 million ha of the total cultivated land of 141 million ha is stated to be under some form of soil degradation.

Similarly, utilizable fresh water resources of India are finite at about 1123 billion cubic meters (BSM), of which about 690 BCM are from surface water resources and 433 BCM are from groundwater. This supply is shared among multiple uses: human and animal consumption, agriculture, urban uses, industry and for provision of environmental services. The total water demand in 2010 is estimated at 710 BCM and is projected to increase to 1180 BCM by 2050. Several parts of India are already facing severe water shortages as a result of the growing demand for water. The quality of water resources is also impacted by agricultural intensification and development, and is increasingly a matter of concern. By the year 2050, when population is expected to stabilize, the shortages will only intensify. The country as whole can be on the verge of becoming a water scarce country, with nearly all the presently estimated utilizable water resources being put to use.

Biodiversity natural resources refer to the abundance of different species and ecosystems in nature. These resources are the primary sources of present and future productive agriculture and human well being, as they provide the basic resources for use in breeding crops and livestock, soil formation and structure, soil fertility, nutrient cycling and the provision of water services. India is among the 12 mega diversity regions of the world. It is known to have more than 18,000 species of higher plants including, 160 major and minor crop species and 325 of their wild relatives. Increasing pressure from human population growth, agricultural intensification, urbanization, pollution and degradation of land, soil and water resources are having a negative impact on the plant, animal and microbial biodiversity resources of the country and their productivity.

1.1. Soil Resource Evaluation

Soil is the essence of life on the planet Earth. It has sustained humanity and human civilizations through five functions (Karlen et al. 1997) viz., i) sustaining biological activity, diversity and productivity; ii) regulating and partitioning water and solute flow; iii) filtering, buffering, degrading, immobilizing and detoxifying organic and inorganic materials, including industrial and municipal byproducts and atmospheric decomposition; iv) storing and cycling nutrients and other elements within the earth’s biosphere; and v) providing support to socioeconomic structures and protection for archaeological treasures associated with human habitation. Reeling under the pressure of increasing food, fodder, feed, fibre and fuel production, soil has been used as a medium of plant growth with considerable reliance on external supply of major nutrients, irrigation water, plant protection chemicals, etc. Although soil, a product of millions of years of weathering, has supported various forms of terrestrial life, its sustainable management holds the key for meeting the basic requirements of burgeoning population and development commitments. So intense has been the pressure of increasing food, fodder, feed, fibre and fuel production that the soil has been exploited often exceeding its carrying capacity. The soils are increasingly used for agricultural and non-agricultural uses, such as disposal of farm, urban and industrial wastes, ensuring environmental safety etc. This is possible by the judicious use of this resource.

A clear and intimate knowledge of the kinds of soils and their extent of distribution are essential prerequisites in developing rational land use plans for agriculture, forestry, irrigation, drainage, etc. soil resource inventory or mapping provides an insight about their potentials and limitations. It is therefore imperative to prepare an inventory of this resource for developing optimum land use plan and conservation plans.

A model is something that mimics the behavior of some real system of interest. Our interest here will be in water quality models, which are usually equations, and which predict some result based on factors that influence that result. A water quality model is a representation of a real system. The essence of a good water quality model is that it is simple in design and exhibits the basic properties of the real system that we are attempting to understand. The model should be testable against empirical data. The comparisons of the model to the real system should ideally lead to improved mathematical models. The model may suggest improved experiments to highlight a particular aspect of the problem, which in turn may improve the collection of data. Thus, modeling itself is an evolutionary process, which continues toward learning more about certain processes rather than finding an absolute reality.

Water pollution is a large set of adverse effects upon water bodies such as lakes, rivers, oceans, groundwater caused by human activities. Although natural phenomena such as volcanoes, storms, earthquakes etc. also cause major changes in water quality and the ecological status of water while these are not deemed to be pollution. Water pollution has many causes and characteristics. Increases in nutrient loading may lead to eutrophication. Organic wastes such as domestic sewage and farm waste impose high oxygen demands on the receiving water leading to oxygen depletion with potentially severe impacts on the whole ecosystem. Industrial discharge a variety of pollutants in their wastewater including heavy metals, organic toxins, oils, nutrients, and solids. Discharges can also have thermal effects, especially those from thermal and nuclear power stations, and these too reduce the available oxygen. Siltbearing runoff from many activities including construction sites, forestry and farms can inhibit the penetration of sunlight through the water column restricting photosynthesis and causing blanketing of the lake or river bed which in turns damages the ecosystems the process is called as eutrophication.

Pollutants in water include a wide spectrum of chemicals, pathogens, and physical chemistry or sensory changes. Many of the chemical substances are toxic or even carcinogenic. Pathogens can obviously produce waterborne diseases in either human or animal hosts. Alteration of water’s physical chemistry include acidity, conductivity, temperature, and excessive nutrient loading. Even many of the municipal water supplies in developing countries can present health risks leads to many diseases.

Around the world, nearly one billion people live along the 3,12,000 Km long coastline. The Indian coastline runs around 8,129 Km distributed along nine coastal states, two groups of islands and two union territories. The coastal ecosystem of India forms a very valuable resource community, supporting the livelihood security of several million rural poor and also contributing the national economy in a large measure. The latest estimates by National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning (NBSS & LUP), Nagpur, India, using Global Assessment of Soil Degradation (GLASOD) guidelines indicate that the coastal area in the country is spread over an area of 11.8 million hectares (Mishra, 2005). Yadav et al. (1983) have reported about 3.1 M ha and 2.1 lakh ha of coastal salinity in India and Tamilnadu respectively.

1.1 Background

The aftermath of Green Revolution has contributed to both coercions and pollution, albeit, it saved human civilization from hunger, malnutrition and impoverishment. The beginning of GR era, with the prevailing objective and condition, has got less but few choices to go for intensive cultivation that invited chemical fertilizer, assured irrigation and farm mechanizations to make the 'magic gene' revolutionizing the production, productivity and livelihood security in agriculture as well.

The welcome of exotic genes into Indian agriculture has also triggered the silent oftraditional cultivars. Nevertheless, the quantum jump of an agriculture with a production of 55 million tons to 120 million tons during 70s, has contributed to make India self-reliant in food and we have been able to earn a new esteem in the global geo-political scenario by throwing away the 'begging bowl' called PL480.

Aristotle (384 to 322 BC), an ancient Greek philosopher and scientist (Fig. 1.1) developed the concept of meteorology as a study of the lower atmosphere. Over the years meteorology developed as a science of atmosphere which deals with the physics, dynamics and chemistry of the atmosphere and their effect upon the earth’s surface, oceans and thereby life in general either directly or indirectly.

As the atmospheric conditions change from time to time in a given area and from place to place in a given time, climatology was developed as a science which studies the average conditions of the weather and its variability over a long period of time.

All most all the human activities are greatly influenced by the weather and climate to a greater extent. Therefore, the scope of meteorology encompasses various activities which are of considerable economic significance as detailed here below;

1.1 Housing

The design and construction of houses, buildings, industrial structures etc. depends upon the weather and climate of the region. Orientation of doors, windows roofs of the buildings are usually designed to provide maximum comfort and convenience to the people.

Arsenic contamination is one of the serious concerns for public health throughout the world. During the weathering of rocks and minerals, which are followed by subsequent leaching and runoff, arsenic (As) is released into the soil and groundwater. Additionally, human sources can transfer it into the soil and groundwater. Depending on the geological settings, geochemistry, and geo-environmental conditions of an aquifer, different aquifers may have different adsorption and desorption processes, arsenic species, Eh, pH, solid phase dissolutions, and precipitations. Therefore, rigorous geochemical investigation for an adequate understanding of arsenic geochemistry under different hydrogeological and geo-environmental conditions of aquifers is essentially required for evolving sustainable solutions. All of the arsenic affected river plains have river routes originated from the Himalayan region. Arsenic in groundwater contamination has far-reaching consequences including its ingestion through the food chain, which are in the form of social disorders, health hazards and socioeconomic dissolution besides its sprawling movement, and exploitation of groundwater. Food crops produced with arsenic tainted water are marketed to other locations, including areas where people may eat the tainted food and be exposed to arsenic. The arsenic contamination of groundwater is a form of groundwater pollution which is due to naturally occurring high concentrations of arsenic in deeper levels of groundwater.

Any perturbation and chaos in ecological setting and its functioning will lead to serious disruptions disruption in both resilience and livelihood. This is exactly what is being confronted by Indian Agriculture upfront. Our soils are brutally extorted to accept the harsh reality that close to 70 per cent of our cultivable land is starving of organic carbon. The ground water depletion in the name of modern agriculture has been another testimony of our ruthlessly prodigal agriculture amounting to serious water crisis. Every five seconds equivalent to a football ground, the golden acres, are vanishing with fertile soil from the chest of the planet. Thus, soil erosion amounting to almost 15 tons per hectare per year in Indian agriculture is not only alarming but also humongous. The losses of biodiversities including floral and faunal counts are adding blistering blistering barrier for our food production system. In the name of green revolution, we turned wrongly illusioned with the ability of so called high yielding varieties and have driven out our valuable landraces to invite gene myopia and gene erosion. This has got a catastrophic consequence. The stagnation of production and productivity in food sector is going to be the bleak indicator of our fragile and frail ecological resilience in the entire production system. But the down to earth reality is that apart from experts, most of our farmers are not aware of this threat, sensitized either. The book has assimilated the data in a delving manner, and real time fact of ground reality that reveals an interesting interpretation of farmers' perception on the rhetoric’s of ecological resilience in India.

This chapter presents a birds’ eye view of the soil to develop the interest among the readers to know more about the fundamental concepts of soil.

Soil is a major determinant of terrestrial ecosystems and helps in the distribution of land flora and fauna. Soils are sources, transformers and stores of plant nutrients. Soils are the recycling places of plant and animal residues and wastes. Soils are also the screen and filter of pollutants in many ways, forms and degrees. Soils are the main link and recharger of hydrological cycle. Soils influence radiant heat exchange, temperature change and land surface reflection characteristics. Soils are important sources and sinks of biogeochemical cycles of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide. Soil is used in buildings, roads, brick kiln, naturopathy etc. Soils are good record of past climatic conditions and human activities, as they have some stable features originated from the interactions of climate, organisms, relief, parent material and time. Soil provides nutrients, water, air, heat and mechanical support to arable plants to produce the food, fodder, fibre, fuel and other plant products for human and animals. Mainly the soil is studied as a natural body and as a medium for plant growth.

1.1. Background

Once this beautiful planet conceived human civilization with the glory of motherhood, the birds kept on twittering in an ecstasy of joy and freedom; the ripples of pristine rivers, blue and giggling, offered shelter to silvery fishes and pink Amazon Lilies! But human greed has defeated its own needs. So, what had been a means to survive now has turned into tools to triumph, rather, a weapon to destroy her own creation. By this time, we have transformed fertile lands into a barren Arizona, deep forests into a nasty slums and blue rivers into a filthy stream, called Yamuna.

The advent of the Anthropocene, implies that an unprecedented era of human impact on the natural environment, is now so large that the Earth has entered a new geological epoch; it is leaving the Holocene, the environment within which human societies themselves have developed (Gornish and dos Santos, 2016; Reynolds, 2021). Climate change is a prominent sign of human- driven changes to the global environment. There is every reason to be alarmed about anthropogenic climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, all of which have been accelerating in recent decades and do pose “existential crisis” (Díaz et al., 2020; Abhilash et al., 2021). Sixth Assessment Report of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released on February 28, 2022, paints a troubling picture as limiting global warming to 1.5oC (a global target in the Paris Climate Agreement) is not safe for all. If warming exceeds 1.5oC, even temporarily, much more severe, often irreversible effects of climate change will occur, land and ocean temperature change, sea level rise and ocean acidification, loss of Arctic Sea ice and ice sheets, stronger storms, longer heatwaves and droughts, abrupt precipitation mainly intensity and seasonal distribution, thawing permafrost and more (IPCC, 2013). On the basis of the Sixth Assessment UN Secretary-General António Guterres said “The alarm bells are deafening, and the evidence is irrefutable: greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel burning and deforestation are choking our planet and putting billions of people at immediate risk.” According to the United Nations (2015), there are still 836 million people in the world living in extreme poverty (less than USD,1.25/ day). And according to the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), at least 70% of the very poor live in rural areas, most of them depending partly or completely on agriculture for their livelihoods. It is estimated that 500 million smallholder farms in the developing world are supporting almost 2 billion people, and in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa these small farms produce about 80 percent of the food consumed (IFAD, 2011). The rural poor often depend partly on forests for their livelihoods (World Bank, 2002). It is estimated that between 660 and 820 million people (workers and their families) depend totally or partly on fisheries, aquaculture and related industries as a source of income and support (HLPE, 2014).

The magnitude and trajectory of changes in ecosystem services and functioning have been as conspicuous as has never been until before 1980’s in this subcontinent. Both the services and resilience of agro-ecosystem, the pivotal for agricultural production and security have been disrupted in the name of modernization of agriculture as well as commercialization.
The impact of green revolution in India, that look place during 1960’s and 1970’s have started eroding very fast and as the consequence of this green revolution, the ground water depletion has gone to the worst, it is contaminated either. 40 % of ground water in Punjab has been moderately or severely contaminated leaving agriculture a coercive proposition both from economic and ecological perspective. 10-15 tonnes of top soil are being eroded per hectare per year in its wrong welcoming to farm mechanization process. Most of the highly yielding varieties which did the ‘magic revolution’ now has been fatigued or segregated either. The social-ecological impacts on agriculture perhaps have been both disruptive and deleterious. Due to unabated fragmentation of holding which again is tiny in size, has initiated another problem of resource and energy wastage, bad enough to add to an ecological disruptions.
With a non-denial to the gleaming success of green revolution, which ensured us with much awaited food security and self-reliance, has its intrinsic weakness and coercion as well.

From the dawn of settled agriculture, the rhythm of seasons and the vagaries of weather have dictated the fortunes of human societies. The earliest farmers were keen observers of the skies, their very survival intricately linked to predicting rainfall, temperature fluctuations, and the onset of frost. This fundamental dependence fostered the nascent field of agricultural meteorology, an art and science passed down through generations, relying on empirical knowledge and local wisdom. Think of the ancient civilizations that timed their planting cycles with the flooding of rivers, or the traditional weather lore that guided farmers on when to sow and harvest. Even today, this fundamental understanding remains crucial, forming the bedrock upon which modern agricultural meteorology is built (Fig.1.1).  However, the 21st century presents agricultural systems with unprecedented complexities. The looming shadow of climate change manifests in increasingly erratic weather patterns: intensified heatwaves scorching crops, prolonged droughts decimating livestock, and more frequent and severe floods inundating arable land. These changes disrupt traditional agricultural practices, threaten yields, and exacerbate food insecurity, particularly in vulnerable regions. The comfortable predictability of the past is eroding, demanding a far more sophisticated and proactive approach than ever before.

Aquaculture is practiced in the majority of countries worldwide, however the significance of water quality standards remains largely unknown to farmers and new aqua entrepreneurs. They may achieve maximum fish production with minimal input costs if they are trained and stay up to date on water quality management in the aquatic ecosystem. The water quality categorised into three main of metrics as physical, chemical, and biological parameters. Dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), free carbon dioxide (CO2), pH, temperature, total dissolved solids (TDS), turbidity, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, alkalinity, bacterial density primary productivity (chl a), plankton population, etc. play a significant role for fish production. However, even small variations in certain physical and chemical parameters—particularly pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen (DO)—can cause stress in the animals, which may manifest as physiological changes, reduced reproductive capability, and altered behavior. Water parameters such as alkalinity and hardness are relatively stable, whereas others like pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and temperature fluctuate regularly. Proper maintenance and monitoring of these water quality parameters in aquatic environments support fish health and enhance fish production. On the other hand, variability in dissolved ammonia, nitrites, and nutrients like nitrate significantly affects aquaculture production. It has also been observed that high feeding rates in aquafarms create eutrophic conditions in water bodies, leading to substantial algal blooms. These blooms are responsible for die-offs, and as a result, ammonia levels in the ponds rise rapidly. The environmental factors responsible for generating high ammoniacal concentrations may also lead to increased nitrite concentration in aquafarm. Both ammonia and nitrite are directly toxic or sublethal cultured aqua animals, leading to reduced resistance to diseases. In aquaculture system, ammonia is produced through the ammonification process, which occurs when organic matter is broken down by the microbial community. However, this decomposition also reduces dissolved oxygen levels in the system. Low dissolved oxygen surges the toxicity of ammonia to cultured animals. Ionized ammonia (NH4 +) and hydroxide ions occurs in equilibrium with unionized aqueous ammonia solution. The unionized form of ammonia (NH3) is toxic

The entire world is now facing a crisis situation. The problems encountered to address the crisis are interactive with each other and there is no easy way to find solution. The world’s population is expected to increase by 70 per cent by the end of year 2050 and there is need to step up agricultural production for a hunger free world. Nearly 70 per cent of the fresh water is used in agriculture sector. The demand for water in agriculture sector can be judged by the fact that several thousands of litres of water is required to produce one kilogram of food grains. Whatever maybe the source from which water is drawn for agriculture, all the sources depend upon the precipitation for replenishment on continuous basis. The precipitation patterns are not consistent and are known for greater variability from season to season, year to year and from region to region. These inconsistencies are further increasing due to recent threat of climate change triggered by the atmospheric pollution. The atmospheric pollution due to increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is responsible for rise in temperatures. The rise in temperature induced changes in global pressure and wind systems. The consequence effect of it is changes in rainfall patterns, frequent occurrence of extreme weather events like floods, droughts, heat waves, intensified cyclonic activity. Rise in temperatures is increasing evaporation of water and water requirement of crops as well. There is considerable increase of the chemicals in the agriculture sector in the form of fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and weedicides how to increase crop production and protection of crops from biotic and abiotic stresses. Consequently, there is increased pollution of water resources which may adversely affect the availability of fresh water, which is essential and critical input in agriculture for increasing agricultural production. It calls for efficient utilization of water resources in agriculture. More concerted efforts are required immediately to:
• Improve water use efficiency in agriculture
• Reduce pollution of water resources
• Conservation of fresh water resources
• Reduce emissions in agriculture sector and
• Prevent dwindling of fresh water resources

The climate crisis is one of the most pressing issues of our time, with farreaching consequences for global agriculture, ecosystems, economies, and societies as extreme weather events, shifting rainfall patterns, and rising temperatures threaten crop yields and food security. However, the climate crisis is not a new phenomenon. Its roots can be traced back to the Industrial Revolution, when human activities such as8 burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and land-use changes began to release large amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. In the 1960s and 1970s, scientists began to sound the alarm about the potential consequences of human-induced climate change. The first climate models were developed, and researchers such as Roger Revelle and Charles David Keeling began to track the rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The 1980s saw the establishment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which has since become the leading international body for assessing climate change science.
1.1 Climate Crisis
Despite these early warnings, the climate crisis has continued to worsen. The past decade has seen a proliferation of extreme weather events, from heat waves and droughts to floods and storms. The year 2024 was the hottest on record, with global temperatures averaging 1.55°C above pre-industrial levels (Fig. 1.1). The consequences of climate change are already being felt, from melting glaciers and sea-level rise to devastating wildfires and water scarcity.

1.1. Meteorology and Climatology
Atmospheric science encompasses the main subfields of meteorology and climatology that are similar in the scientific principles and phenomena being examined, but usually differ by approach, time scale, and application. Meteorology is the scientific study of the atmosphere and weather including weather forecasting. It is an interdisciplinary science that involves observing, understanding and predicting weather conditions likely to prevail well in advance (Fig.1.1). The study of meteorology has been around thousands of years, but significant progress did not begin until the 18th century. Climatology is an atmospheric science that focuses on the processes that create weather patterns and variability. Climatology was developed as a science that is based on weather data recorded at multiple locations for comparatively longer periods, usually for 30 years or more. The study of climatology based on the physical processes is influenced by the geographical features, topography and interaction between land and oceans.
1.2. Agricultural Production
Life demands food. The production of food depends upon 4 major factors that are soil, genetic material, management practices and weather. Over a period of time, formers have evolved the cropping strategies based on their local knowledge and experience on the changes in weather within a cropping season. With rapid advances in agricultural sciences, several new varieties of crops were developed, appropriate soil and water management practices were evolved and suitable measures for reducing abiotic and biotic stresses on crops were identified. However, the recent threats of climate change due to increased atmospheric

The rhythm of life for a significant portion of the world‘s population is intrinsically linked to the cyclical patterns of monsoons. These seasonal winds, predominantly experienced within the tropics between 20° North and 20° South latitude, dictate not only the climate but also the agricultural productivity across vast regions spanning South Asia, East Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas. This dependence is starkly highlighted by the fact that a considerable proportion of the world‘s arable land relies solely on rainfall, with monsoons being the primary source of this vital resource. In India alone, for instance, nearly half of the agricultural land is rainfed, a figure indicative of the broader reliance on monsoonal patterns in many other nations within these regions. Agriculture, the primary source of livelihood for many in these monsooninfluenced areas, remains heavily dependent on the timely arrival and consistent behavior of these rains. The delicate dance between the monsoon and agricultural cycles has shaped cultural practices, economic structures, and societal well-being for centuries. It is estimated that a substantial percentage of global agricultural production is reliant on monsoonal rainfall, underscoring the profound impact these weather systems have on food security and economic stability worldwide. The variability of monsoons – in terms of onset, intensity, duration, and spatial distribution – directly translates into fluctuations in crop yields, impacting everything from local food supplies and farmer incomes to national economies and international trade. Beyond the economic implications, the social vulnerability associated with monsoon variability cannot be overstated. Communities that depend on rainfed agriculture are particularly susceptible to the vagaries of the monsoon. Delayed or weak monsoons can lead to widespread crop failures, resulting in food shortages, economic hardship, and even migration. Conversely, excessively heavy rains can cause devastating floods, destroying crops, infrastructure, and livelihoods. Therefore, understanding, monitoring, and, crucially, forecasting the behavior of monsoons is not merely an academic exercise but a critical necessity for ensuring the prosperity and resilience of a significant portion of the global population. The Asia-Pacific region is highly vulnerable to climate change, with impacts such as more frequent natural disasters, sea-level rise, floods, droughts, and changing weather patterns. Rural areas, particularly those reliant on agriculture, are disproportionately and non-identically affected. The Asia-Pacific region, home to over 60% of the world's population, is among the most vulnerable to climate change due to its diverse geography, dense coastal populations, and socioeconomic disparities [IPCC, 2022a], Climate change is an emerging threat that affects all countries to varying degrees. The recently released IPCC Assessment Report identified agriculture as one of the critical sectors both susceptible to climate change and contributing to it through Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. Countries in the Asia-Pacific region are investing significant resources to strengthen agriculture on various fronts. These investments focus on the research and development of new varieties and agro-technologies to adapt agriculture to emerging climatic threats and, simultaneously, mitigate GHG emissions from the agricultural and allied sectors. These initiatives are in their early stages, and there is a need to assess the current status of countries' vulnerability to climate change and the measures taken to address

The world is facing unprecedented challenges in ensuring global food security, and climate change is exacerbating these challenges. Rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, and increased frequency of extreme weather events are altering the dynamics of crop diseases, making them more unpredictable and difficult to manage. 1.1 Role of Weather in Disease Managemènt
Weather plays a crucial role in the occurrence and spread of crop diseases. The development and dissemination of plant pathogens are significantly influenced by weather conditions such as temperature, humidity, wind, and precipitation (Fig 1.1). A climate change may alter the life cycle, survival, virulence and even genetics of a plant pathogen. Favorable environmental conditions are always a prerequisite for a pathogen to establish pathogenicity. Temperature is a critical factor in the development of crop diseases. Due to complex hydrogeological conditions it becomes very difficult to prospect the ground water resources especially in drought prone areas where the water table is very deep. The interpretation of geoelectrical sounding curves also becomes ambiguous. A semi empirical method namely theinverse slope method [Shankar Narayan and Ramanujachari, NGRI] is widely used since it is simple to operate without standard curves etc and it gives fairly good results. In some Government organizations like PWD [Ground Water Department] and TWAD Board of Tamilnadu, this inverse slope method is widely used for ground water exploration. Based on this methodology, ample of bore well points have been recommended in complicated hard rock terrains and the success rate is found to be encouraging. The study area, Kavalpatti, of Palani taluk in Dindigul district is a crystalline rock terrain, where geological, hydrogeological and geoelectrical investigations have been carried out to explore the ground water potential zone for agricultural purpose. The bore well drilled to a depth of 32 m has yielded 370 lpm. The interpreted geoelectrical section has been correlated with the litholog of bore well. Some bore well statistics [bore well points recommended based on this method] has been furnished, which reveals that this methodology is encouraging.

13.1 Exchange Capacity

Soil colloidal particles carry both negative and positive charges on their surface which attract and hold equivalent amount of oppositely charged ions to their surface. The total number of negative charges present on a given mass of soil or capacity of a given mass of soil to exchange cations or total number of cation held by a given mass of soil is termed as cation exchange capacity (CEC). Similarly, the capacity of a soil to retain anions is known as anion exchange capacity (AEC). The ion exchange capacity of a soil depends upon the type and amount of colloidal particle (clay and organic matter) present in the soil. Ion exchange capacity (CEC / AEC) is expressed as milliequivalent ion (cation / anion, respectively) per 100 g of soil (meq / 100g). It is also expressed as centimoles of charge (positive / negative) per kg of soil [cmol (±) / kg]. Meq / 100g = cmol (±) / kg of soil.

Cation Exchange of Clay Minerals in Soil

The term “clay mineral” refers to phyllosilicate minerals and to minerals which impart plasticity to clay and which harden upon drying or firing. Clay minerals are layer silicates that are formed usually as products of chemical weathering of other silicate minerals at the earth’s surface. Clay minerals in soil play a significant role in exchanging cations, which are positively charged ions, and in regulating soil fertility and nutrient availability. Cation exchange capacity (CEC) is a measure of a soil’s ability to exchange cations and is influenced by the type, abundance, and charge properties of clay minerals in the soil. Clay minerals have a high CEC due to the presence of charged surfaces (silanol and alumoxane groups) that can exchange cations with the soil solution. The most common cations exchanged by clay minerals are hydrogen (H+), calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), potassium (K+), and sodium (Na+). When a soil solution comes into contact with clay minerals, cations in the soil solution are adsorbed or attracted to the charged surfaces of the clay particles.

Today, the integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) is transforming agriculture by shifting the approach from reactive management to proactive, data-driven decision making. Modern IoT systems deploy a network of interconnected sensors that continuously capture critical environmental parameters such as soil moisture, temperature, humidity, light intensity, and nutrient levels. These sensors provide granular, real-time data that is transmitted to centralized analytics platforms where it can be processed and visualized. The resulting insights empower farmers, aquaculturists, and animal husbandry professionals to optimize every aspect of their operations — enhancing yields, reducing waste, and increasing sustainability. This chapter explores the deployment and impact of IoT in agricultural and allied systems. 6.1 The Role of IoT in Modern Agriculture
6.1.1 Revolutionizing Data Collection
The most significant impact of IoT in agriculture is its transformation of data collection. Traditional methods relied on periodic field observations, manual sampling, and regional weather reports that provided only a snapshot of environmental conditions. In contrast, IoT devices continuously monitor the microclimate across a farm. With sensors distributed throughout fields, livestock facilities, and aquaculture systems, farmers can now capture real-time data on temperature, humidity, soil moisture, light intensity, and more (Fig.6.1).

Introduction

It is a well known fact that agricultural pests cause substantial crop losses throughout the world. In the past farmers had to manage this problem to secure their basic subsistence needs, and as a response, the farmers practiced and developed cultural and mechanical pest control based on trial and error. Over a period of time, these practices have become a part of their production management system. The first known chemical control dates back to 2,500 years. From the late 1800s to 1940s, the main insecticidal compounds used were oils, soaps and resins, plant-derived poisons and inorganic compounds. The chemical age began in the 1940s with the discovery of dichloro diphenyl trichloroethane (insecticide), ferbam (fungicide), and 2, 4-D (herbicide) (Arneson and Losey, 1997). In 1940s and 1950s, pesticides were thought to be the final word in pest control and their introduction contributed substantially to raising agricultural productivity in many regions of the world. Since then, pesticides have become an integral component of many intensive agricultural systems. Repeated applications of pesticides lead to resistance in the pest (Beaument, 1993). This resistance results in the increased application of pesticides and to the collapse of the agricultural systems characterized by highly resistant pests, with no natural enemies left to control them. Pesticides have been found to causeacute and chronic human health problems, contamination of groundwater, surface water, atmospheric contamination, and negative effects on non-target organisms (Mullen, 1995). Concerns about the negative effects of pesticides led to research and promotion of alternative pest control practices – Integrated Pest Control or simply IPC. This new concept called Integrated Pest Control (IPC) and later Integrated Pest Management (IPM) was stimulated by symposia organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in 1966. IPM made a paradigm shift in the philosophy of pest control, from pest eradication to pest management. Instead of single tactic control, emphasis was placed on the use of a combination of available tactics in a compatible manner aimed at providing cheap, long term sustainability with minimum of harmful side effect and controls the pest at ETL level.

The purpose of irrigation scheduling is to decide upon the amount of water to be applied for irrigation and timing of irrigation in order to avoid wastage of precious water. The irrigation scheduling is also used to determine the number of irrigations required for a crop during its growth cycle and judicious use of water depending upon the weather forecasts issued from time to time. The irrigation scheduling has to be planned for either full irrigation or supplementary irrigation depending upon the availability of water resources and the season during which crops are grown. Crops grown during the dry season requires full irrigation and crops grown during the rainy season require supplementary irrigation. The third category of irrigation is protective irrigation which is practiced in dryland areas. The protective irrigation is given when the crops are experiencing severe moisture stress due to prolonged dry spells wherever the farmers has access to small ponds and tanks developed within his own field as water harvesting structures.
10.1. Full Irrigation
Under full irrigation, the crops are provided with irrigation right from land preparation till the crop is getting ready for harvest maturity. The full irrigation will be usually planned for maximum yields of the crop (Fig.10.1).

For better yield irrigation water must be free from soluble salts and from concentration of specific chemical substances that may hazard to soil with respect to salinity, sodicity, alkalinity and toxicity. Water analytical data which helpful to predict the magnitude of the effect of irrigation water on soil and plant growth under specific environmental circumstances so irrigation water must be analyzed for EC, pH, Na+, Ca⁺⁺, Mg⁺⁺, Cl^-, CO₃–, HCO₃-  and SO₄.^– 

OBSERVATION

The examination of the IRS - 1A imagery under raw and the digitally enhanced modes vividly display heavy concentration of suspended sediments in certain sectors along the east coast of Tamil Nadu. Such pockets of suspended sediments are seen as long and linear bodies trending parallel to the coast to the strike length of 20 - 30 km and width of 5 - 10 km. Such Phenomenon of suspended sediments concentration are strikingly observed in two sectors. One in between Tuticorin harbour and Vaippar river mouth and the other just at the mouth of Ponnaiyar river along Cuddalore-Pondicherry coast. Both of them are observed along conspicuous (Fig.1& 2) concave coasts.

Introduction

Agriculture has historically been the primary source of income in India. It has the potential to alleviate poverty, increase income, and enhances food security for 80% of both the world’s poor and people who reside in rural areas primarily work in agriculture. One of the most effective strategies to eradicate extreme poverty, increase shared prosperity, and feed an estimated 9.7 billion people by 2050 is agricultural development. Compared to other modes, the agro - based sector’s progress is two to four times more successful in enhancing the earnings of the poorest people (www.worldbank.org).

Nearly 5 billion hectares, or 38% of the world’s land surface, is used for agriculture. Around one of this is devoted for farming, and the remaining two thirds are pastures and meadows for grazing animals. Over 10% of cropland is assigned to permanent crops like cocoa plantations, oil palm plantations, and fruit tree orchards. Yet another 21% of land is primed for irrigation, a crucial agricultural land management technique.
