9. WEATHERING

The general process of production of rock waste partly by mechanical breaking and partly by chemical decomposition is known as weathering. The resulting products of weathering accumulate in the same place from which they are derived and there is no transport involved in the process.

Agents and types of weathering : The agencies which are involved in the process of weathering are atmosphere, water and organisms. The whole process of weathering may be conveniently divided into two types : mechanical or physical weathering and chemical weathering. Mechanical weathering involves those processes which bring about disintegration of rocks and minerals without any chemical activity. Chemical weathering involves various chemical processes which slowly decompose the rocks and minerals. In nature two processes are intimately associated and only under extreme conditions, they do occur as a separate entities. Mechanical weathering breaks down the rock creating more surface area and facilitates chemical weathering. Chemical weathering weakens the rock and makes it more susceptible to mechanical break down. Thus the two processes are always complementary to each other.

Three fundamental processes that are responsible for inducing changes in weather are transfer of heat, energy and mass. The Sun, whose inter-surface temperature is estimated to be around 6000°C emits heat energy in the form of solar radiation which is received at the earth’s surface after it is partly depleted in the atmosphere. Therefore, it is essential to understand the processes that govern the transfer of heat in the earth-atmosphere system.

3.1 Conduction

The transfer of heat from one point to another point within the material medium without the actual movement of the particles in the medium is called conduction i.e. the heat energy transfer is conducted by the particles in the medium from hot end to cold end. If a metal rod is heated at one end, the other end of rod becomes hot gradually due to transfer of heat by conduction. India is having very rich sources of inland water bodies in the form of river, lakes and reservoirs. The reservoirs are constructed by impounding the river system. The reservoirs are constructed for effective utilisation of water for irrigation, power generation and flood control. Reservoir fishery in India is also important from socio-economic point of view as it has the potential of providing employment to about two million people, Kaushal and Sharma (2001). Total area under the reservoirs in India is 3:1 million ha and it is expected to double by 2020. This includes 19,000 small reservoirs with a total water surface area of 14,85,557 ha and about 180 medium and 56 large reservoirs of 5,27,541 and 11,40, 268 ha area respectively.

The Maharashtra is endowed with an area of 1,79,430 ha under reservoir and the Maharashtra produces 516 tonnes of fish through reservoirs. The state fisheries corporation was operating in 6,272 ha of reservoirs and marketing the catches.

Abstract

The seaquake on 26^th December 2004 with its epicenter at Sumatra triggered a tsunami, which had a major impact on South East Asian countries. During that incident, the average height of the tsunami wave was 7-10 m and the penetration of seawater was up to 1-1.5 km. The surface water resources meant for irrigation and other drinking purposes got affected by the ingress of seawater in many areas. The direct environmental impacts of the tsunami have more impact along the entire east coast and caused more damages in coastal systems. The physical and chemical perturbations caused in the coastal zone by the tidal waves are discussed. In order to assess the environmental impact on coastal system, it is suggested that significant physical and biogeochemical factors could be framed to quantify the problems.

Soil texture and mechanical analysis: The chemistry of the mineral framework was explained in Chapter II. Its physical properties are quite as important- When all the extraneous matter is removed from the soil we are left with a collection of particles of various sizes. These particles are not spherical in shape, but most of them are nearly so. At any rate the discussion is very much simplified if we suppose that they are spherical and the arguments advanced are equally applicable if the shape deviates from the spherical.

Plants are frequently subjected to environmental stresses such as water deficit, freezing, heat and salt stress. Soil salinity is a major problem in arid and semi- arid regions, where rainfall is insufficient to leach salt and excess of sodium ion down and out of root zone. In Asia, around 21.5 million ha of cultivable land was affected by salinity. India had 8.6 million ha of salinity affected cultivable land. It is observed that the area of salinity has been increasing in India. In Tamil Nadu, the area affected by salinity is around 6 lakh ha. Salinity affected areas are Chengalpattu, Salem, Thanjavur, Trichy, Tirunelveli, Dharmapuri and Ramanathapuram. Salinity is the most serious threats to the agriculture especially in the arid and semi-arid region. The presence of salts in the soil and their effects on the plant physiological mechanisms was major restrictive factor for agricultural productivity. Investigations on such soils have revealed that they were charged with high and abnormal soluble salt concentrations that lowered agricultural yield, limited crop distribution and even lead to extinction of certain species.

Salinity adversely affects plant growth and development, hindering seed germination, seedling growth, enzyme activity, DNA, RNA, protein synthesis and mitosis. There has been a variation in the response of plants to salinity with its growth stages according to quantity and period of exposure to salt. Salinity by competing in nutrition element absorption causes growth reduction. Primary salt injuries include metabolic disturbance and inhibition of growth and development. Secondary salt effects include nutrient deficiency and osmotic dehydration. Excessive amounts of salts, especially sodium chloride (NaCl), in the soil induce osmotic effects, leading to changes in plant metabolism. General symptoms of damage by salt stress are growth inhibition, accelerated development and senescence and death during prolonged exposure. Salt stress causes the reduction of rice yield and severe salt stress may even threaten survival.

Introduction

In the past few decades, persistent change in climatic variables coupled with global warming lead to the genesis of climatic stress. Currently climatic stress is considered as the most serious ultimatum to livestock’s growth, development, production and reproduction in tropics and subtropics including India. Livestock’s in tropical countries are most commonly affected by the menace of climatic stress. It has been shown that, climatic stress upsets animal’s body homeostasis resulting in grievous decline in livestock’s production and productivity across the world. In general, livestock adapt to the climatic insults via behavioural, physiological, biochemical, metabolic, endocrine and molecular responses. Despite of these thermal adaptation mechanisms, livestock’s witnesses the perils of climatic stress thereby incur major loss in their production and productivity. Therefore, in this changing climatic scenario, it is imperative to rigorously understand and explore the precise mechanism of thermal adaptation to generate climate resilient species which could upsurge the socio-economic status of the farmers as well as the country.

Stress is force per unit area. When matter is subjected to stress; it may undergo changes in size, shape and displacement. Plants are grown in open environment and are likely to experience stress due to environmental conditions or when subjected to pests and diseases. The stress experienced by plants due to environmental conditions is called abiotic stresses. These include stresses caused by weather factors and climatic conditions and include moisture stress and thermal stress. The plants may also experience stress due to strong winds, dryness and as well as humid conditions (Fig.8.1).

Laboratory pipettes are classified by their method of liquid transfer. There are two types of pipette one is plastic which is made up of polystyrene and are essentially disposable and second one is glass pipettes are very resistant to chemicals. Glass pipette can be used frequently by washing, sterilising and dry heat sterilisation is also available. Some of the common types of pipettes are using in laboratory such as serological, volumetric, micropipettes, multichannel, and Pasteur pipettes. Serological and graduated pipettes are used for transferring various volumes, while micropipettes and volumetric types of pipettes are only considered for precise measurement and transfer. Multichannel pipettes are used for dispensing into multiple wells, and Pasteur pipettes are simple for transferring small amounts.
1. Serological Pipettes
• Also known as graduated pipettes, made of glass or transparent polystyrene they are calibrated with markings to measure and dispense varying volumes.
• Appropriate for cell culture applications, transferring liquids and mixing.
2. Multichannel Pipettes
• It is design to transfer multiple samples at once, often used for 96 well plates or pcr tubes.
• It can be manual or automated, with multiple heads for faster dispensing.
3. Volumetric Pipettes
• It is designed to supply for single and particular volume of liquid.
• Marked by single graduation for an exact volume, such as 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 mL.
• Used in chemical reactions and analysis where accuracy is crucial.

4.1 Sampling and Preparation for Analysis

The determination of nutritional need of crops is an important aspect of nutrient management of any plant analysis programme. The need of fruit plants for mineral nutrients differ from those of annual crop species in a number of ways, many of which are related to the perennial nature of tree crops. In perennial tree crops, there is a need to supply nutrients both for ultimate fruit production, the fruits and the vegetative organs, which persist from year to year. The need for leaf analysis in perennial horticultural crops and forest trees has proved its superiority over soil diagnostic methods. This is essentially because of their deeper root system and the fact that nutrients supplied in one year may have its effect on both the nutrition and crop production in following years. However, it is largely being used not as an alternative method to soil testing, but as a supplement to soil testing. Results of foliar analysis are usually interpreted using the critical nutrient level (CNL) approach. Accurate interpretation of foliar analysis using the CNL approach is possible only when sampling is restricted to the same growth stage at which standard reference values have been established (Beaufils, 1971, 1973). Plant growth and productivity are adversely affected by various abiotic stresses. Plants are frequently exposed to a plethora of stress conditions such as low temperature, salt, drought, flooding, heat, and oxidative stress. Various anthropogenic activities have accentuated the existing stress factors. All these stress factors prevent them from reaching their full genetic potential and limit the crop productivity. In the event of growing concerns of uncertainties in climatic conditions, the abiotic stresses have become the major threat to agriculture production worldwide (Bray et al., 2000). The plant responses to abiotic stress condition are believed to be complex in nature as these are the reflections of integration of stress effects and responses at various levels of plant organization. To provide tolerance against stresses, plants are equipped with several inbuilt physiological and biochemical mechanisms occurring at cellular level. An understanding of processes linked to these mechanisms is vital in optimizing the crop growth and productivity under stress conditions.

Abstract

Microbes are endowed with a high and exploitable potential of being useful associates with their surrounding environment and host in case of symbiotic relationship. Most of the microbes live alone but many of them require association of other living system for its survival. Hence, the beneficial role of microbes is always correlated with growth promotion and survivability of other associated living system. Now it is established that microbes play an important and key role in plant growth and development, even its survivability in case of symbiotic mycorrhizal association with orchids. They are nothing but potential tool protecting plants from different adverse conditions like diseased state, environmental stress like cold temperature, drought, metal contamination, salt and acidic or alkaline stress.

Coconut, cocoa (cacao), coffee, cashew, cardamom, black pepper, tea, rubber, oil palm and areca nut are the major plantation crops that are perennially grown along the coastal belt in southern States of the Country and to some extent in high rainfall zones of the northeastern States of India. These crops are also known as perennial crops. The life span of these crops varies from fifteen to sixty years or more depending upon the crop and its management. Coconut and cashew are also popularly known as the coastal trees. Cardamom and black pepper are also known as the spice crops. Once these plantation crops are well established, they mature for fruiting in three to eight years depending upon the nature of plantation crops and the crop management. The reproductive phase is seen round-the-year in case of coconut and cocoa. Cashew is one of the plantation crops with seasonality in fruiting from September to June. Cocoa is mostly grown as an intercrop in coconut gardens and in some pockets as a pure crop. Black pepper is trained to coconut and areca nut in many locations and seen as mono crop as well. All these crops are grown in laterite, sandy and alike in well drained soils. The hill slopes with terrace cultivation are also suitable for all the plantation crops. Tea, coffee and cardamom are seen on hillocks extending up to the base. Some of the plantation crops are seen in multitier cropping system as well as mixed/intercrops/homestead gardens. They are grown mostly under the rain fed and summer irrigation is beneficial for better harvest. The plantation crop distribution, production and productivity are influenced by air temperature, rainfall and the other meteorological variables viz. sunshine, cloud cover, solar radiation, vapour pressure, evapotranspiration, humidity and wind. Interestingly, coffee spread in Wayanad District while cardamom in Idukki District. Coffee experiences unimodel rainfall while bimodal in the case of cardamom.

Dyes are one of the most important by products of the plants, as they are related with cultural practices, rituals, arts and crafts, fabrics and to satisfy personal embodiment. However, dye yielding plants have not received significant attention (Grover and Patni, 2011). Dye is a substance that has affinity to the substrate to which it is being applied such as textile fibers, foodstuffs and powder. They are organic coloured substances which absorb light in the visible part of the spectrum and have the property of colouring the substrate they are applied to.
 
Colourants which are obtained from plants and natural sources are known as natural dyes. Natural dyes have been traditionally used in most of the countries. These dyes were obtained from roots, leaves and bark (Akhtar et al., 2012). Natural dyes find use in the colouring of textiles, drugs, cosmetics, etc. Owing to their non-toxic effects, they are also used for colouring various food products. In India, there are more than 450 plants that can yield dyes (Siva, 2007).

Abstract

The recent earth movements and the related seismicities in the Southern part of the Indian Peninsula has been a matter of enigma for a century and more. While one school was strongly holding the opinion that the southern Indian Peninsula is free from recent earth movements as it is a shield area, the other school has narrated the possibilities for the ongoing earth movements. Under these circumstances, the various anomalies observed from satellite data and ground based information on geomorphology, subsurface lithology, geophysics, hydrogeology, geochemistry etc. have suggested a possible Pleistocene / Holocene graben along Pondicherry in the northeast and Cumbum Valley in the southwest in the southern tip of the Indian Peninsula.

Abstract

The tectonics of the geological past from Archaeozoic to early part of Cenozoic era has been studied due to their penetrative documentation in the form of folds and faults. But the tectonic history of the latter part of the Cenozoic era (i.e Pleistocene period) has remained a matter of conjecture owing to the poor response of the rocks to Pleistocene movements. In the present study the authors presented a model for the Pleistocene earth movements of South India through the study of river migration, coast line changes and lineament fabric derived from the space borne photographs.

In the area of study, the northerly migration of Paleru and Pennar and southerly shift of Palar, Ponnaiyar and Cauvery rivers, marine regressions restricted within this segment and the closely spaced crest line fractures suggest a lineament controlled E-W trending Quaternary upwarping along Mangalore-Madras alignment. Similar E-W cymatogeny is inferred in the southern tip of the Peninsular India on the basis of once again such observations. Such E-W trending Pleistocene arching phenomenon suggests a N-S oriented regional compression which could be related to the collision of Indian plate with Tibetan plate.

14.1 Changes in policy and strategy

14.1.1 Policy changes

In the discussion on land use planning we suggested that the ideal pattern of development is to establish a long-term national or regional policy, which leads to medium-term strategies, and short-term tactical operations. In the real world a curious situation is arising in that the adoption of the new land husbandry approach is growing so fast that the practitioners have moved ahead of the politicians and opinion formers, with the result that the implementation of strategies by Non-Government Organisations, aid agencies, and senior field officers, is helping to shape new policies.

There is always the problem that national policies ought to be long term, but are created by politicians usually working within a short time frame to the next election. Fortunately, the land husbandry approach allows planners at all levels from farmers to governments to appreciate the long-term issues.

The new approach was mentioned in section 9.2.1 in connection with land use planning. It is summed up in the slogan From soil conservation to land husbandry, and two reviews using that title list the main points as the need for:

Drought, a sporadic yet impactful event, presents a significant challenge to agricultural systems and economies globally. A notable observation in this context is the tendency of policymakers to readily claim success for their governance during years of favorable weather, while conversely attributing agricultural failures in drought years primarily to natural causes. This inclination often masks an underlying lack of consistent focus and investment in proactive drought-proofing measures. This international comparison examines the contrasting approaches to drought management between developed and developing nations, highlighting how this lack of focus, coupled with varying capacities and resources, shapes their respective policy responses. Understanding these disparities is crucial for fostering more effective and equitable drought resilience measures worldwide, moving beyond the simplistic attribution of agricultural successes to policy and failures solely to weather

ABSORPTION (of light): A process by which light is taken-up by another material. Examples include soot consisting of tiny black particles, which absorb all visible light; and nitrogen dioxide, a pollutant mostly from diesel and gasoline engines, that absorbs blue light resulting in air with a brown tint.

Introduction

Pomegranate is one of the most remunerative fruit crops that grow well under arid and semi-arid agro eco-system with severe scarcity of water. The popularity of pomegranate has grown tremendously due to its health beneûts, high returns on investment, less water requirement, therapeutic and functional properties. Growing health consciousness among the consumers and acquisition of super fruit status by pomegranate has made marketing of pomegranate fruits and derived value added products quite easy. As the result of all these benefits, India is witnessing a pomegranate revolution with more than 80 % expansion in area and 250 % increase in production during last one decade. However, there are many challenges to be overcome so as to double the income of pomegranate growers, these challenges include market glut due to unprecedented increase in production coupled with limited export resulting into suboptimal price of the harvested produce; intensification of diseases and insects and pest due to huge unplanned expansion; dominance of only one variety; very limited value addition; hampered export due to suboptimal quality, unwanted sprays, issue of pesticide residues and lack of sufficient number pesticide label claims in pomegranate; inadequate supply chain management. So, in order to overcome these challenges and to increase the profitability of pomegranate stakeholders, we need to focus on scientifically sound cultivation practices to reduce the cost of cultivation, breeding for improved varieties, improved packaging, transport, storage, marketing, supply chain management, facilitating and encouraging export, practicing and promoting climate resilient horticulture, formation of farmers’ cooperatives and farmers producers organization (FPOs), processing and value addition with the aim of total utilization and use of information and communication technologies. This article deals with opportunities and strategies in pomegranate for doubling farmers’ income through nursery management; improved horticultural practices; integrated disease, insets pests and nutrient management; use of information and communication technologies; creation of FPOs; processing and value addition.

7.1. Introduction

The integrated farming system (IFS) is becoming increasingly important for effective farm resource management in order to increase farm productivity, reduce environmental degradation, improve the quality of life for resource-poor farmers, and ensure sustainability. Integration happens when one production sub-system's outputs (typically by-products) are used as inputs in another within the farm unit (Radhammani et al., 2003; Lightfoot and Minnick, 1991). IFS are a mixed farming system made up of at least two distinct but logically linked components of crop and animal enterprises. The integrated farming system is effective in reducing risk, increasing productivity and revenues, and improving the use of organic waste and agricultural leftovers.

Pongamia pinnata or Mellettia pinnata or Pongamia glabra or Derris indica (2n=2x=22) is a tropical ever green fast growing leguminous tree, with glabrous, glossy and deciduous leaves. The tree is native to India and South Asia and also found in Oceania.

HUMAN POPULATION GROWTH

The evolution of man took place about one million years ago in response to changes in the physical environment. We learnt gradually to adapt different modes of life to varying environments and migrated different parts of the world. Human activities have had their impact on the environment, which was depending on the number of people living in  the area and  their level  of economic development. Per capita consumption of food, energy and other resources in developed countries is larger and its impact on the environment is much greater than equal number of persons living in developing countries in Africa or Asia. Therefore, the distribution of population needs to be examined in detail.

Abstract

Quality of water is a matter of serious concern for arid and semi arid region like Rajasthan. The study area chosen is extreme western arid part of Rajasthan state where water quality and quantity both are very important issues. Due to absence of any perennial river, scanty rainfall and scarcity of surface water resources, ground water is very deep and saline. The groundwater potability assessment was based on 1119 wells water quality data. The purposes of this investigation were (1) to provide an overview of present groundwater quality and (2) to determine spatial distribution of groundwater quality parameters which affect water potability and (3) to map groundwater potability in the study area by using GIS and Geostatistics techniques. Arc GIS 9.3 and Arc GIS Geostatistical Analyst were used for generation of various thematic maps and Arc GIS Spatial Analyst to produce the final groundwater potability map.

16.1. Forms of Soil K

Ignoring potassium (K) in soil organism, total K in soil may be classified as (i) water soluble K, (ii) readily exchangeable K (exchangeable K), (iii) slowly exchangeable K (non- exchangeable or fixed K) and (iv) mineral or lattice K. The different forms are in dynamic equilibrium with one another.

Glauber J. R. (1604–1670) in Netherlands first proposed that the salt peter (KNO₃) was the principle of vegetation. He obtained large increases in crop yield by addition of salt peter.

Mineral soils contain 0.04–3.0% K. Total potassium content of soils range from 3000 to 100000 kg per ha in the upper 0.2 m of soil profile. Of this total potassium approximately 98 percent is bound in mineral form whereas 2% in soil solution and exchangeable phases.

ROLE OF POTASSIUM

It is Involved in activating the enzymes (as many as 80) responsible for carbon dioxide reduction and required for synthesis of adenosine triphosphate. Hence deficiency of potassium reduces crop growth and yields.

We will begin by exploring the theoretical maximum yield, often termed "potential production," which represents the inherent capacity of a crop variety to produce biomass and yield when all limiting factors are eliminated. This potential is primarily dictated by a crop‘s genetic makeup and the prevailing climatic conditions, such as solar radiation, temperature, and carbon dioxide concentration. Subsequently, we will shift our focus to achievable production, the real-world yield obtained by farmers. This actual yield invariably falls short of the potential due to a myriad of biotic (pests, diseases, weeds), abiotic (water scarcity, nutrient deficiencies, extreme temperatures, poor soil health), and socio-economic (lack of access to inputs, knowledge, or markets) constraints. The disparity between potential and achievable yield, known as the "yield gap," represents a significant opportunity for enhancing agricultural output without necessarily expanding cultivated land. By meticulously examining the factors that contribute to this gap, we can identify targeted interventions and innovative strategies to bridge it, thereby moving closer to realizing the full productive capacity of our agricultural systems. This chapter will therefore provide a comprehensive framework for understanding the science behind crop yields and the practical approaches required to optimize them for a more food-secure future.

Consequently, extensive research has been dedicated to identifying alternative sources that can mitigate the dependence on fossil fuels [1]. Biofuels have garnered worldwide attention as a potential substitute for fossil fuel-derived fuels, given their distinctive qualities [2]. Utilizing a variety of plant sources, including sugarcane, corn, soybeans, vegetables, palm oil, and Jatropha (often used in Africa), biofuel production is progressing on almost every continent. Bioethanol is successfully used as a biodiesel in addition to gasoline for otto-cycle engines in nations like the USA and Brazil [3]. Conversely, biodiesel represents a significant category of biofuel capable of partially or fully replacing diesel obtained from fossil fuels. Biodiesel is made via a process called trans-esterification that uses renewable biolipids [4]. Biodiesel can be produced from oil that comes from nonedible agricultural seeds or kernels [5]. Furthermore, edible oils from plants such as sunflower, palm, and soybean are used as feedstocks to produce biodiesel [6]. In the field of biofuel research, nanotechnology and nanomaterials have proven to be useful instruments for improving output quality at a reasonable cost. Algae stands out prominently in discussions about biofuel production due to concerns related to food resources. Types of biofuels and their sources are represented in the (Fig.1). The use of crops and plants yielding food is considered unsuitable for prioritizing biofuel production due to potential disruptions in food supply. Notably, various algal species vary in their production capacity. The utilization of nanoparticles (NPs) is advantageous in biofuel synthesis due to their unique characteristics, including a substantial surface area to volume ratio, adsorption capacity, high crystallinity, and stability. This distinguishes them from competing sources as better possibilities [7]. In the process of creating biofuels, metal oxide nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes are widely used as nano-catalysts because of their extra characteristics that allow for their high potential recovery [8]. The overall procedure for producing biodiesel on a small scale and for experimental purposes using algae are shown in the (Fig.2).

Introduction 
The overuse of fossil fuels is expanding simultaneously with society’s rapid development, which culminates in a decrease in fossil energy and a very serious deterioration of the environment. The purpose is to make the carbon neutral as fast as possible, which will make the invention of alternative energy sources to replace the fossil fuels. To make world a better place to live, fossil energy is highly needed to be conserved and measures should be made to limit the use of fossil energy. After many researches, the alternate to fossil energy has been made in the form of “BIODIESEL”. Biodiesel, which is produced from renewable resources such as vegetable oil is a new clean alternative to fossil fuel. Biodiesel in the new era of scientific field is mainly produced from Microalgae. Production of biodiesel from microalgae ensures reusing carbon resources from nature. This method contributes to achieve in replacing petroleum use and also helps in reducing pollution in the environment. Biodiesel consist primarily of esters which is formed by methanol or by ethanol and long chains of fatty acids which may be saturated or unsaturated such as palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid and linoleic acid. This is the main and ultimate reason why production and use of biodiesel is attracted the attention of researches worldwide. The biodiesel is developed in three generations that is First, Second and Third generation Microalgae are single-celled organisms which are microscopic. They are an essential component of carbon cycle and they can exploit carbon sources in water and soil efficiently and have plenty of advantages over the other biodiesel sources that are conventional oil crops such as wheat, palm, corns, soybeans, maize and rapeseed. In this century, one of the most important environmental issues is global warming, that is caused by released of greenhouse gases. These microalgae have high rates of biomass production and can survive in a variety of circumstances, such as freshwater, saltwater, and wastewater (Muhammad Abdullah et.al 2024) Their ability to be grown on non-arable ground and their lack of resources competition with food crops are two of their most significant and crucial advantages. The process of producing biodiesel from the microalgae involves many stages. The stepwise structure involves lipid extraction, microalgae cell disruption, harvesting, culture and transesterification. Microalgae re a promising source of biodiesel as they have a high lipid content and can grow quickly. But they are complex in composition and they require a specialized harvesting system. Nanoparticles are an ultrafine unit and have dimensions which are stated in nanometers. These nanoparticles can be detected in the natural environment and can also be generated by human activity. Because of their sub-microscopic size, they boast unique material properties and may be used in many different kinds of fields, namely environmental remediation, engineering and medical care. In 2008, International Organization for Standardization (ISO) defined this nanoparticle as a discrete nano-object in which all the Cartesian dimensions are less than 100nm. Climate change and variability can adversely affect the poultry production in India, because birds can only tolerate narrow temperature ranges. Thermal stress on poultry is major concern. Heat and clod stress can cause immunosuppression and make birds more prone to infectious diseases. Climate change affects the occurrence, distribution and prevalence of poultry diseases.  Nutritional strategies aimed to alleviate the negative effects of heat stress by maintaining feed intake, electrolyte and water balance or supplementation of micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals to satisfy the special needs during heat stress have been proven advantageous. Ventilation and cooling methods are essential for birds to survive high summertime temperatures. Tunnel ventilation coupled with evaporative cooling is very effective in keeping birds cool during hot weather. The increasing proportion of poultry production in tropic and subtropical region makes it necessary to reconsider the selection strategy and potential use of naked neck and frizzle genes for improving heat tolerance in chicken.

The practical schedule to be implemented as per the syllabus prescribed for the course is reorganized in a logical sequence. The teachers offering the course is required to collect all the material required for effective practical training before the semester starts. In case of measurements made and observations taken, the students should be rigorous trained to understand significance of observation made and its practical utility (Fig. 15.1). The students are required to learn how to interpret and use the information contained in all products generated by meteorological services in fisheries and aquaculture.

This will include understanding the principles of operation, potential sources of error, and best practices for ensuring data accuracy.
• Conducting Field Measurements: Moving beyond automated stations, trainees will learn manual data collection techniques for parameters like leaf area index, canopy temperature, radiation interception, and soil physical properties. This hands-on experience will foster a deeper appreciation for the spatial variability of microclimates and the challenges of obtaining representative data.

1. Introduction 
The growing demand for fossil fuels around the world and their extensive use, which degrades the environment, have been serious issues. More precisely, it is predicted that global energy consumption will rise by 49% between 2007 and 2035 due to social pressure, population growth, and economic expansion (Cheah et al., 2016; Prasad et al., 2016). In order to replace fossil fuels, alternative energy resources must be developed, according to energy security and environmental sustainability. The most promising bio-fuel among the alternatives to gasoline is bio-ethanol, which can be used as the only fuel in compatible automobile engines or blended with gasoline up to 30% without requiring engine changes (Safarian and Unnthorsson, 2018). Bio-ethanol has a higher-octane number, which enables engines to run at high compression ratios, and a high oxygen content, which improves combustion efficiency (Branco et al., 2019). Grain, sugar beets, corn, and sugarcane could all be used to make bio-ethanol. Together, Brazil and the United States account for over 90% of the world’s bio-ethanol production, with 59% and 27% coming from each country, respectively (Branco et al., 2019).The Policy Energy Act and Energy Independence and Security Act, which aim to consume 136 billion gallons of bio-ethanol by 2022, are the main drivers of the USA’s remarkably high production rate (Menon and Rao, 2012; Tran et al., 2019). Unfortunately, the world’s food security is now in jeopardy due to the manufacture of bio-ethanol from the aforementioned edible energy crops. For the synthesis of bio-ethanol, lignocellulosic biomass-such as agricultural residues, forest woody residues, micro-algae, and even municipal solid waste is consequently a more advantageous source. Cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin make up the lignocellulosic complex structure. While hemicellulose is in charge of binding and 88 | Biofuels Production Using Sustainable Bioprocessing Technologies lignin guarantees the toughness of the entire stricture, cellulose, a polymer made of glucose, gives plants structural support (Kumar et al., 2016; Prasad et al., 2016). According to Tran et al. (2019), pre-treatment is a crucial step in order to: (i) increase the amorphous area to facilitate hydrolysis; (ii) improve the porosity of the porous matrix to facilitate enzymatic and chemical hydrolysis; and (iii) separate cellulose from lignin and hemicellulose. The majority of the most successful pre-treatment techniques now in use are physio-chemical and chemical techniques, which also produce harmful compounds such furfural (Liyamen and Ricke, 2012). Other techniques are also used, each with advantages and disadvantages. For example, biological pre-treatment is environmentally benign but does not generate large amounts of material. Compared to the thermochemical approach, the biochemical conversion process performed better and was more ecologically friendly (Mu et al., 2010; Liyamen and Ricke, 2012; Kumar et al., 2019). It should be mentioned that the pre-treatment cost should also include the expense of detoxifying harmful inhibitors, which are created as a result of the pre-treatment technique (Liyamen and Ricke, 2012). All things considered, a successful pre-treatment ought to be both financially and environmentally responsible. It’s also critical to make sure that other advantageous aspect like maximum energy savings, waste and wastewater recycling, material recovery, and the use of a biorefinery method are taken into account throughout the lignocellulosic bioethanol production process (Kumar et al., 2019). This chapter introduces major indices such as the Standardized Precipitation Index, Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index, Percent of Normal and percentile-based measures. It discusses data requirements, calculation, interpretation, strengths and limitations. These indices support meteorological, agricultural and hydrological drought assessment, wet-spell analysis, crop planning and water-resource management. By identifying the severity and persistence of rainfall deficits or surpluses, precipitation indices strengthen early warning, drought preparedness and climate-risk management in agriculture.

3.1. Conventional Physical Process
It occurs when the air on the surface of the earth and few metres above the surface of the earth is heated by absorbing long wave radiation emitted by the earth’s surface. As the air is heated, it becomes lighter. The water vapour formed due to evaporation from the soil surface or water bodies will mix with the air and the air will be moist. When the moist air gets heated it becomes lighter and rises vertically upwards. After reaching certain height, the air gets cooled enough to get saturated with water vapour. The moisture in the saturated air will condense on small solid particles to form tiny drops. These solid particles may be dust or smoke or solid particles suspended in the atmosphere and are called aerosols.

Abstract

The social and economic development of any state is interlaced with the manner of its natural resource management. The unplanned use and overexploitation of resources are results in various kinds of land degradation, biomass deterioration and siltation of tanks. In addition, the low per capita availability of land, erratic and uneven distribution of rains, undulating topography, improper management, traditional cropping programmes and recurrence of droughts having cumulative effect leading to low productivity and high risk particularly in dryland farming. Further, developing dry land agriculture through sectoral approach did not bring in the desired results, as the efforts were not integrated. However, in nature all the resources are inter-linked and thus, the integrated developmental approach is the best solution for optimal development of any area. Further, development based on administrative units such as district, taluk, block and village have resulted in imbalance and sometimes, no overall development in some areas. Considering this, natural resources management through Geo- informatics tools like, remote sensing, GIS, GPS and other sensor based techniques are the possible ways for making agriculture sustainable. The paper mainly highlights theimportance of application of latest technologies in agriculture along with some field level case studies.
