Earth’s atmosphere is a dynamic and complex system that plays a crucial role in supporting life as we know it. • Composition and Structure: It will begin by examining the unique blend of gases that make up the atmosphere, including nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and trace amounts of others. It will also be explored how the atmosphere is structured into distinct layers (troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere), each with its own characteristics and role.
• Weather: Weather refers to the short-term conditions of the atmosphere at a specific time and place. We’ll discuss the key elements of weather, such as temperature, pressure, humidity, wind, and precipitation, and how they interact to create the ever-changing weather patterns we experience.
• Climate: In contrast to weather, climate describes the long-term average of atmospheric conditions in a particular region. We’ll investigate the factors that influence climate, including latitude, altitude, proximity to oceans, and atmospheric circulation patterns. We’ll also explore the different climate zones found across the globe.
• Interconnectedness: A key focus of this chapter understands how weather and climate are interconnected. Daily weather patterns are influenced by the same fundamental atmospheric processes that shape long-term climate. For example, the way the sun’s energy interacts with the atmosphere drives both daily temperature variations and global climate patterns.

This chapter reviews the research work done in the fields related to the objectives of the study. In any scientific investigation or research a comprehensive review of relevant literature is very essential. Its main function apart from determining the work done before concerning the problem area i.e. area of investigation, it provides an insight into the methods and procedures and create a basis for interpretation of findings. As direct references on all the item are not in abundance, certain specific references along with some indirect references have been incorporated this chapter for the purpose of meaningful use.
2.1. Ecosystem Services and Conservation Agriculture
Acharya, S. K. and Chatterjee, R. (2019) found that conservation agriculture may help in re-building agro-ecology by maintaining carbon sequestration, maintaining soil health, checking soil erosion and ground water depletion, energy balance, mitigating climate change related problems through maintaining ecosystem services.
Ayyam, V., Palanivel, S., and Chandrakasan, S. (2019) stated that CA embraces higher rates of carbon sequestration, organic matter accumulation, soil erosion reduction, and its associated improvement in soil biological properties. Additionally, there is reduction in greenhouse gas emission as a result of CA. Adoption of CA-based farming practices particularly in areas facing notable land degradation and depleting natural resources delineates a win-win scenario due to improved crop yield and trends of increasing soil fertility and scope for climate change adaptation to recuperate degraded soils and improve ecosystem services.

A Master’s program in Agricultural Meteorology offers a deep dive into the intersection of atmospheric science and agricultural practices. Individuals who choose this path have often previously explored the intricate relationship between weather, climate, and crop cultivation, demonstrating a keen interest in how environmental factors shape agriculture. While conventional agromet advisories have played a crucial role in informing agricultural practices, their inherent broad-scale nature often falls short of addressing the nuanced realities of modern farming. For instance, rainfall predictions at a district level can mask significant variations at the farm or even field level due to local topography, soil types, and microclimatic conditions. Similarly, generic recommendations for irrigation scheduling or fertilizer application may not align with the specific needs of different crop varieties, growth stages, or soil moisture retention capacities within a farm. This lack of granularity can lead to inefficient resource utilization, sub-optimal application of inputs, and increased vulnerability to localized weather events, ultimately impacting productivity and profitability.
9.1. Key Drivers for the Emergence of PAAS
Several converging factors are propelling the shift towards precision in agrometeorology:
• Escalating Climate Variability: The increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, coupled with long-term shifts in climate patterns, demand more adaptive and localized strategies. Farmers need precise and timely information to make informed decisions in the face of unpredictable weather.
• The Imperative for Sustainability: Sustainable agricultural practices necessitate the efficient use of resources like water, fertilizers, and pesticides. PAAS can contribute significantly by providing targeted recommendations that minimize waste and environmental impact.
• Technological Advancements: The rapid development and increasing affordability of various technologies are making PAAS a reality. These include:
• Remote Sensing: Satellite and drone-based imagery provide highresolution spatial data on crop health, soil moisture, and other critical parameters.
• Internet of Things (IoT) Sensors: Networks of sensors deployed in fields can continuously monitor local weather conditions, soil properties, and plant physiological parameters.

This chapter deals with data importing, exporting and data manipulations in R. R can import almost all kinds of data format. The basic data format of .txt and .csv and data from other softwares like MS office .xls and .xlsx, spss ……, stata ……., etc. however, we will discuss in this chapter to read and write the basic formats and the .xlsx data which we use the most. Further, we will also discuss the basic data manipulations. For a detailed reading on data manipulation, readers can refer to the first book of the series namely “Data Handling and Manipulation in R”.
2.1. Primary Spectral Data Processing
The original spectra consisting of relative reflectance values of 2151 points (at 1 nm interval) between 350 and 2500 nm were averaged at every tenth-nanometer wavelength interval from 360 to 2490 nm by integration technique. Thus, the new spectra contained reflectance values at 360, 370, 380, 2490 nm, are inclusive. For example, the new reflectance value for 360 nm represented an integrated value of the original reflectance values from 356 to 365 nm, inclusive. Similarly, the reflectance at 400 nm was an integrated reflectance values from 396 to 405 nm, while the reflectance at 2490 nm was an integrated value of reflectance from 2486 to 2495 nm. This was done to reduce the volume of data for analysis and to match it more closely to the spectral resolution of the instrument (3 to 10 nm). This procedure resulted in a new dataset, with reflectance values specified for 214 wavelengths for all samples, which were further processed for noise removal.
2.2. Importing Data in R
We can rerad many format of tabular data in R such as excel, text, csv, etc. In thid book we will be using the csv format. Before reading the data, arrange data in excel/CSV sheet so that spectral data in column is followed by chemical data/ lab data. This will ensure that if any soil property or properties added in next column there is no need to change code for selection of spectral data in R environment.

This chapter will look into the fascinating world of weather forecasting, exploring its historical roots, the fundamental scientific principles that underpin it, and the sophisticated tools and techniques employed by modern meteorologists. We will journey through the process of observing the current state of the atmosphere, the computational power used to model its complex dynamics, and the various ways forecasts are disseminated and interpreted. Understanding the science behind weather forecasting empowers us to appreciate its capabilities and limitations. It allows us to make more informed decisions in the face of an ever-changing atmospheric environment. The world’s population is projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, putting unprecedented pressure on the agricultural sector to produce more food while minimizing its environmental footprint. However, the increasing frequency and severity of climate-related disasters, such as droughts, floods, and heat waves, pose significant challenges to agricultural productivity and food security. To address these challenges, farmers, policymakers, and agricultural experts must adopt innovative approaches that integrate climate science, agricultural meteorology, and cutting-edge technologies to generate actionable farming intelligence. Climate science and agricultural meteorology provide critical insights into the complex relationships between weather patterns, climate variability, and agricultural productivity. By incorporating these disciplines into farming practices, farmers can enhance crop yields, reduce climate-related risks, promote sustainable agriculture, and improve decision-making. Understanding weather patterns and climate trends enables farmers to optimize planting dates, irrigation schedules, and harvest times, leading to improved crop yields and reduced losses. Access to accurate and reliable climate information helps farmers anticipate and prepare for climaterelated disasters, minimizing damage to crops and livestock. Climate science and agricultural meteorology also inform farmers about the most effective strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, conserving water, and maintaining soil health. The integration of climate science, agricultural meteorology, and cutting-edge technologies is revolutionizing the agricultural sector. Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms analyze large datasets, including climate information, soil moisture levels, and crop health, to provide insights on optimal farming practices. Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and connected devices monitor weather patterns, soil conditions, and crop health in real-time, enabling farmers to respond promptly to changing conditions. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping and spatial analysis help farmers understand the spatial distribution of climate-related risks and opportunities, informing decision-making at the farm level (Fig. 3.1).

The demand for alternative energy sources is on the rise as a result of global apprehensions regarding the swift exhaustion of fossil fuels, escalating energy usage, and significant environmental challenges (Lijó et al. 2019). Microalgae are regarded as highly favorable raw materials for upcoming energy sources, thanks to their various advantages, including rapid growth rates, elevated lipid contents and resistance to a variation of pH, temperature, light intensity, and salinity (Goswami et al. 2022; Zhang et al. 2022; Wang et al. 2019; Das et al. 2011). As per a recent evaluation of the lipid production efficiency of microalgae biomass, numerous nations could derive their transport fuel (~30%) from microalgae biomass grown on non-agricultural areas (Moody et al. 2014). Apart from their higher lipid production efficiency in contrast to earthly raw materials, microalgae consist of lipids, polysaccharides, pigments, proteins, and nucleic acids, making them versatile raw materials for a range of finalized outcomes, including nutrients, pharmaceuticals, biofuels, and bioplastics (Tang et al. 2020; Kim et al. 2016; Moody et al. 2014; Sharma et al. 2011). Additionally, microalgae are appealing for their efficient sequestration of CO2 during photosynthetic growth (Vargas-Estrada et al. 2020). In contrast to landbased oilseeds, microalgae can be cultivated in freshwater and contaminated or saline locations, eliminating the requirement for substantial nitrogen fertilizer application (Sharma et al. 2022; Rashid et al. 2019; Lam and Lee 2012). The positive attributes of microalgae as raw materials have prompted substantial research endeavours aimed at the commercialization of microalgal biofuels. Regrettably, microalgal biorefineries continue to encounter various technological and economic challenges (Khoo et al. 2020). In essence, nanotechnology involves the invention, creation, and utilization of resources at the nanoscale. Precisely, nanomaterials engineering explores the synthesis and designing of artificial or adorned nanoparticles to drive technological progress and enable applications that would otherwise be impractical. Nanomaterials possess surface areas hundreds of times greater than their weights, significantly enhancing their physico-chemical attributes (Husen and Siddiqi 2014; López-Serrano et al. 2014). Currently, nanotechnology-driven developments, with diverse potential features, have emerged as a burgeoning trend in various industries, including drug delivery, food industry, catalysis, coatings, agriculture, bioremediation, cosmetics, and materials science (Malik et al. 2023). Nanoparticle engineering offers practical and potential solutions to address the problems that arise at different phases of the microalgal biorefinery procedure. For instance, diverse nanomaterials have been proposed as ways to enhance transformation efficacy and the quality of green diesel. The distinctive capabilities of nanoscience and nanomaterial engineering exert a substantial impact on the commercial feasibility of microalgae derived products, including bioactive compounds, oils, lipids, and biofuels (Kumar et al. 2020; Milano et al. 2016). Nanoparticles have the capacity to boost intracellular fatty acid synthesis and complete microalgal biomass, leading to substantial reductions in production expenses. The presence of nanomaterials enhances the efficiency and speed of the microalgae harvesting, and the recoverability and reusability of these materials contribute to improved production efficiency.

1. Background
The growing global population, industrialization, and urbanization have driven rising energy demand, with primary energy use increasing by 5.8% in 2024 (BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2024). The need for secure, affordable, and low-carbon energy is critical due to fossil fuel depletion, global warming, and geopolitical tensions. Clean energy sources like solar, wind, and biofuels are being explored, with biodiesel standing out as the only biofuel capable of fully replacing fossil fuels (Aizouq et al., 2020). Many countries, including India and China, are advancing biofuel production, with the latter viewing it as a key to energy security. Biofuels, derived from various sources like algae, crops, and waste, include biodiesel, bioethanol, and biogas. They are categorized into four generations based on feedstock. First-generation biofuels, made from edible materials, face food vs. fuel competition. Second-generation biofuels from non-edible sources are more sustainable but still face resource limitations (Lv et al., 2019). Thirdand fourth-generation biofuels from microalgae offer higher yields and better land use, with species like Chlorella vulgaris and Nannochloropsis oceanica showing promise for biodiesel production. Microalgae’s fast growth and efficiency have led to advances in biodiesel production, although challenges remain, such as species selection and production scale-up (Arora et al., 2021). But there is a constraint for commercial availability of these biofuel which are the economic and environmental obstacles that are creating problematic condition for approval and use of genetically engineered microalgae for their potential to enhance lipid yields. This chapter delves into the current opportunities and challenges in microalgae biofuel production, focusing the need for regular research and innovation (Maliha and Abu-Hijleh 2022).
2. Choosing the Different Classes Of Microalgal Strains
The achievement of huge-scale microalgal culture relies on picking appropriate species. The production of various lipids greatly affects the selection of strains and biofuel properties. For the biodiesel, Triacylglycerol (TAG) is the preferred lipid but compared to green algae its content is typically low in cyanobacteria. with the average lipid content of 25.5%, green algae (Chlorophyceae) stand as the largest class of oleaginous microalgae, which can rise under nutrient stress (Saini et al., 2021). Also, the biomass productivity is equally important for high lipid productivity as high lipid content is beneficial. For biodiesel production, strain selection should focus on both lipid content and biomass. Chromochloris zofingiensis shows the highest lipid productivity among all classes of green algae. The saturated (SFA) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) fatty acid (FA) being dominant, their composition also plays a vital role in biodiesel quality. It has seen those high levels of C16:0 and C18:1 in microalgae is ideal for biodiesel production (Bharti et al., 2021). Therefore, for improved biodiesel performance, strain selection should consider both lipid productivity and FA composition (Bagchi and Mallick, 2016).

1.1 Definition of Smart Energy Management (SEM)
Smart Energy Management is a smart practice that utilizes evolved and improved technologies for the analysis and enhancement of the energy systems in real-time. The main aim is to make energy production, distribution, and consumption more profi cient, affordable, and sustainable. SEM also focusses on minimizing the waste generated and environmental effects (Kataki et al., 2017). By the combination of advanced technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), Artifi cial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), optimization and transformation of bioenergy systems can be effectively achieved. This technology can also be used to monitor and control the bioenergy systems actively so as to complement the prerequisite of the implementation and operations in bioenergy plants successfully (Syed, 2024). The era of increased need for the renewable sources and alarming issues of climate alteration calls for the innovative energy management (Jones, 2017). It emphasizes the demand for SEM in bioenergy systems ensuring the production of sustainable, eco-compatible and structures bioenergy system. This chapter foreground the top causes for which SEM to be more vital for the future bioenergy prospects.SEM enables real-time monitoring and optimization which allows bioenergy plants and their production of energy according to the demand, weather conditions and availability of the feedstock (Swami et al., 2023). SEM also generates the way to regulate bioenergy systems to facilitate the cost, performance, and energy conversion efficacy by utilising sensors, statistics and cloud computing (Fig 1). The integration of SEM with bioenergy is specifically relevant because of the variable and complicated nature of biomass feedstocks which include forest and agricultural residues, and food waste (Rodrigues et al., 2022, Duca and Tascano, 2022). The variations such as, moisture, quality and energy density show the effect on the efficiency in the production of bioenergy. Smart technologies are used to monitor as well as optimize the energy production along with the real-time fluctuations in response to the demand, feedstock availability and its supply (Hao et al., 2022)
1.2 AI (Artificial Intelligence) ML (Machine Learning) and IoT
There are two major emerging technologies named AI and ML which have transformed SEM for bioenergy systems. These technologies ease predictive analytics, decision making and enhanced simple processes. By analysing the massive datasets gathered from bioenergy operations, AI systems are able to forecast future energy output, system efficacy and operational damage (Saju et al., 2025). Utilizing real-time data feed such as pH range, composition of feedstock, temperature etc, AI systems incorporated with bioenergy plants can forecast biogas generation in and anaerobic digestion system (Barasa, 2021). Algorithms of ML in SEM helps in analysing and enhancing decision making process by both live and historical data. It predicts the forecast pattern in energy output and modify the operational parameters. Consequently, through a continuous learning process over time, the forecast prediction and bioenergy system are becoming more and more efficient (Khan et al., 2022). Bioenergy systems such as feedstock transport, conversion processes, and energy distribution can have real-time data which are collected by IoT technologies, constituting sensors, actuators and other connected devices (Ahuja and Khosla, 2019; Wang et al., 2022). Intelligent energy management systems utilizing IoT and AI technologies can greatly improve the efficiency of energy distribution and use, contributing to more sustainable urban environments. According to Liew et al., 2021, sensors are the source of valuable insights for the operation of bioenergy because it helps the operators in make decisions about system performance and efficiency and gain a better knowledge of the system functions. Sensors are installed in bioenergy facilities to provide continuous monitoring of information such as temperature, moisture content, pressure, and gas composition using IoT. Figure 2 depicts the significance of AI, IoT and ML in renewable energy.

The importance of climate change, sustainable development, environmental concerns, and energy needs are gaining attention more than ever. The conventional energy procedures, such as solely dependent on fossil fuels are ended with greenhouse emissions, contributing to pollution and deficiency in natural resources. To overcome these straits, bioenergy has become the sustainable and promising alternative, also offering the declining nature of dependency on non-renewable resources and parallelly providing cleaner energy options (Khalid, 2024). Mere the production of bioenergy is insufficient to address the huge energy needs of the current situation. If sustainability is to be ensured means, then effective energy management is to be ensured. The newly developed smart energy management systems improve energy production, distribution, and consumption by utilizing cutting-edge technology like artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Smart energy management is a notion that limelight on lifting the reliability and efficiency of energy systems. With the usage of current technologies, smart energy systems can audit real-time energy use, and energy demands and manipulate the power distribution accordingly. This required to improvising the potential of renewable energy (Hossain et al., 2024). Energy recovery is defined as the reusing of energy, that has the possibility to get waste in the following forms, heat, waste materials, gas and so on. In the bioenergy industry organic waste is converted into a suitable form of energy, which gives hybrid benefits like waste reduction and energy generation. Furthermore, a highly resilient and efficient energy system that meets sustainable development goals can be created by combining these recovery systems with intelligent energy management tools (Mariana et al., 2021). The investigation of how energy recovery technologies and intelligent energy management can improve the efficiency and sustainability of bioenergy systems is covered in this chapter. The potential of smart energy solutions to meet the increasing need for sustainable and renewable energy sources will be highlighted in this research through a thorough analysis of case studies, emerging trends, and existing technologies. A roadmap for the future of bioenergy will be provided, together with an identification of the main obstacles and possibilities that players in this quickly changing industry must contend with (Naeem, et al., 2024).

Expanding on the importance of understanding monsoons from a regional perspective, Chapter 4, “Regional Phenomena Exerting Influence on Monsoons in Different Regions,” takes a closer look at the unique fingerprints that specific geographical features and localized climate dynamics leave on these vital weather systems around the world. While Chapter 3 provided the grand narrative of globalscale influencers, this chapter delves into the intricate details of how monsoons are fine-tuned and often dramatically altered by the characteristics of the land and oceans they interact with on a regional level. Consider, for instance, the colossal impact of the Tibetan Plateau’s summer heating on the Indian Summer Monsoon. The intense solar radiation absorbed by this vast elevated landmass creates a powerful upper-level heat source, driving a strong low-pressure system that acts like a vacuum, pulling in the moistureladen winds from the Indian Ocean that deliver the life-sustaining rains to the subcontinent. Similarly, in North America, the development of the North American Monsoon Anticyclone, a large high-pressure system aloft, plays a crucial role in steering moisture from both the Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico into the arid Southwest, transforming parched landscapes into vibrant green during the summer months. We will also explore phenomena like the Saharan Heat Low, a thermal low-pressure system over the vast desert that is instrumental in drawing in the rain-bearing southwesterly winds from the Atlantic Ocean to fuel the West African Monsoon, a lifeline for numerous nations. Furthermore, the chapter will examine the regional oceanic influence of the Indian Ocean Dipole and how the temperature differences between the western and eastern parts of the Indian Ocean can significantly modulate the strength and distribution of rainfall during the Indian monsoon and in neighboring regions. Through a series of regional case studies, this chapter will illuminate the diverse ways in which local geography, land surface characteristics, and regional atmospheric and oceanic circulations act as critical modifiers of global monsoon patterns. This detailed exploration underscores the necessity of understanding these regional nuances for accurate forecasting, effective water resource management, and the development of tailored strategies to cope with the inherent variability of monsoons in different parts of our planet.

Crop-weather models are sophisticated constructs, meticulously designed to replicate the dynamic and intricate interplay among atmospheric conditions, complex soil processes, nuanced plant physiology, and the decisive influence of human management interventions. The agricultural system is a prime example of a highly interconnected and non-linear system, where changes in one component can ripple through and affect many others, often with time lags and feedback loops. To truly comprehend, effectively design, rigorously develop, and clearly communicate the inner workings of such multifaceted simulations, relying solely on dense textual descriptions or abstract mathematical equations can prove daunting and often insufficient. This is precisely where relationship diagrams emerge as indispensable tools. At their core, relationship diagrams are powerful visual representations that translate the abstract scientific concepts and mathematical formulations embedded within crop-weather models into intuitive graphical formats. They are essentially the architectural blueprints and flowcharts of these complex systems, allowing us to see, rather than just read, how various components of the agricultural ecosystem interact. Imagine trying to understand the intricate wiring of a skyscraper or the precise movements of a symphony orchestra purely from a written description; diagrams provide the essential visual mapping that brings clarity and coherence to complexity. These diagrams are not mere aesthetic additions; they are fundamentally required because of the inherent complexity and interdisciplinary nature of crop modeling. They bridge critical gaps: Bridging Disciplinary Gaps: Agricultural system modeling brings together experts from diverse fields – agronomists who understand plant responses, meteorologists who provide weather insights, soil scientists who grasp soil physics and chemistry, and computer scientists who implement the models.

Introduction 
Castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) is a species of annual and perennial flowering plant in the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae (USDA, 2016). It is the sole species in the monotypic genus, Ricinus, and subtribe, Ricininae. The evolution of castor and its relation to other species are currently being studied using modern genetic tools (Institute for Genome Sciences, 2009). Castor reproduces with a mixed pollination system that favors selfing by geitonogamy but can also be pollinated by wind (anemophily) or insects (entomophily) (Rizzardo et al.,2012). Native to the southeastern Mediterranean Basin, Eastern Africa, and India, castor is now widespread throughout tropical regions (Phillips & Rix, 2002). The plant is known for its seeds, which contain 40-60% oil, primarily composed of triglycerides such as ricinolein. However, the seeds also contain ricin, a watersoluble toxin present in lower concentrations throughout the plant. Ricinus communis exhibits significant variability in its growth habit and appearance, with cultivars selected for leaf and flower colours as well as oil production. Castor bean is a fast-growing shrub that can reach up to 12 meters in height, although it is not cold hardy. Its stems spherical, spiny seed capsules also vary in pigmentation. In some varieties, the fruit capsules are more attractive than the flowers. Ongoing research aims to better understand the plant’s evolution and its relationship to other species, while its unique characteristics and diverse uses make it an important subject of study. The monoecious castor plant bears unisexual male and female flowers in terminal panicle-like inflorescences (Fig :1). Male flowers are yellowish-green with creamy stamens, while fewer female flowers have prominent red stigmas (Oliver and Lee, 2010). The spiny capsule fruit contains large, oval, poisonous seeds with a caruncle that aids ant-mediated dispersal. Improving castor bean (Ricinus communis) cultivation for biodiesel production involves a combination of genetic, agronomic, and technological strategies aimed at enhancing yield, oil quality and sustainability. Genetic improvement focuses on developing high-yielding and disease-resistant varieties through traditional breeding, molecular techniques like marker-assisted selection (MAS), and advanced tools such as CRISPR-Cas9 for targeted gene editing. Efforts are directed at optimizing oil content, improving fatty acid profiles for biodiesel, and reducing toxins like ricin. Agronomic practices play a crucial role, including the adoption of efficient planting densities, intercropping systems, and soil and

3.1 Introduction 
The continuous rise in CO2 levels is poised to culminate in a profound global warming impact. Projections suggest that by 2030, CO2 levels could nearly triple, driven by the burgeoning population of motor vehicles. This pressing issue underscores the urgency for the current generation to scrutinize its fuel choices and explore alternative options. Biomass emerges as a pivotal contender, offering a trinity of fuel phases. Escalating petroleum prices and growing apprehensions about the role of fossil fuels in contributing to global warming have spurred a quest for biofuels, recognized for their environmentally friendly attributes. The worldwide energy consumption has increased by an astounding 4 to 5% due to the combination of industrialization and the growing human population. Energy insecurity presents a number of puzzles, including rapidly decreasing fossil fuel reserves due to rapid industrialization, skyrocketing gasoline prices, growing dependence on Middle Eastern oil supplies, and the deleterious effect of fossil fuels on greenhouse gas emissions. Air pollution due to fossil fuel smoke from industries & transportation The UN's June 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro set the stage for addressing environmental issues such as acid rain and the greenhouse effect caused by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The goal of the Kyoto Protocol, an agreement between Russia, Japan, and Europe, is to reduce CO2 emissions. The ability of first-generation biofuels to lower CO2 emissions has drawn attention. But there is a lot of criticism about how they use land and how it affects the supply of food. A more complex option is provided by secondgeneration biofuels, which are made of leftover animal fat and lignocellulosic biomass. The third generation focuses on algae, namely single-celled organisms (SCO), as a viable substitute in the fuel industry. Within this discourse, "biofuels" refer to chemicals that are enhanced with energy. When burned, biofuels release fewer toxic emissions than fossil fuels, making them renewable resources. Furthermore, no carbon dioxide (CO2) is emitted into the environment by them; instead, any carbon released during combustion is absorbed by plants as they grow.

Introduction 
To fight climate change and lessen dependency on fossil fuels, the world urgently needs renewable and environmentally friendly energy sources. Hydrogen has become a promising energy carrier due to its versatility and capacity to generate energy from renewable resources without releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The world's demand for energy has been steadily increasing as a result of urbanization, economic expansion, and population rise. With an estimated 10 billion people on the earth by 2050, energy consumption is only expected to increase. Fossil fuels, which include oil, coal and gas have been widely used to generate energy and are predicted to do so at least until 2050 (see Fig.6.1) [1]. Figure 1. These fuels generate a large amount of greenhouse gases (GHGs) during combustion, especially carbon dioxide (CO2), which is connected to climate change and global warming. In addition, burning fossil fuels releases particulate matter (PM), sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and other pollutants that are harmful for human health. In addition, the unequal distribution of fossil fuel supply has led to increased instability globally and worries about energy security. Numerous nations started making investments in energy from renewable sources as concerns about the environment and energy security have grown. Because they emit little to no greenhouse emissions, renewable energy resources like hydroelectricity, wind, and solar power contribute to lowering the energy industry's overall environmental impact (see Fig.6.2) [4].

Introduction 
Carbon rich solid residue named as biochar produced by heating biomass in a procedure recognized as pyrolysis. During pyrolysis, biomass, including crop and forestry residues, manure, municipal and industrial wastes, is broken down at temperatures exceeding 400°C, with minute to no oxygen present. This procedure results in the making of syngas, bio oil, and biochar. Given its high carbon content, approximately 60% to 90%, biochar addition in soil has been recommended as an effective, long-term method for capturing atmospheric CO2 within terrestrial ecosystems. In addition to its role in reducing greenhouse gas productions and carbon sequestration, biochar offers various advantages for soil quality enhancement. Incorporating biochar into soils can boost crop yields by improvising the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the soil, such as increasing water retention, adjusting soil pH, and enhancing microbial activity (Zoghlami and Paës, 2019). The production of biochar offer several benefits such as carbon sequestration in which produced biochar captures carbon that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere (Rahimi, Anand and Gautam, 2022). This helps mitigate climate change by locking carbon in a steady form for a lengthy period, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. When added to soil, biochar can enhance its physical, chemical, and biological properties. It improves water preservation, nutrient accessibility, and microbial activity, leading to increased soil fertility and crop yields (Saikia et al., 2015)perennial grass species Arundo donax L. was pyrolysed in a fixed-bed reactor and characterization was performed for the liquid and the solid products. The effect of process parameters such as temperature (350-650°C. Biochar production can utilize various types of organic waste materials, including agricultural residues, forestry waste, and certain municipal and industrial wastes. The pyrolysis process used to create biochar can be designed to minimize emissions of harmful gases and particulates, thus contributing to air quality improvement. These byproducts can be used as sources of renewable energy, further reducing the carbon footprint. Biochar can improve soil aeration, reduce soil erosion, and help prevent nutrient leaching, which contributes to overall soil health and ecosystem stability as described in figure 9.1. This general contamination inthe air is not just a serious risk to humanity but also harms ecosystems whilcontributing to global climate change. Controlling airpollution has becomea critical necessity at this stage, with the need for innovative solutions inthis respect. Bioremediation is one of the innovative solutions, where certainmicroorganisms break down or neutralise pollutants in the air.

1. Introduction
1.1. The Growing Problem of Pesticide Pollution
Pesticides are used in very great amounts in agricultural production for theprotection of crops against pests, diseases and weeds. They are also veryinstrumental in boosting agricultural productivity by ensuring food securityand preventing losses that may be caused by outbreaks of pests (Popp et al.,2013). However, the extensive use of pesticides has generally resulted in hugeenvironmental concerns. Improperlymanaged pesticide residues may remainin soil, water and even air for many years and create severe ecological andhealth hazards in the long run (Zhang et al., 2024). This widespread existenceof pesticides in the environment has raised a serious alarm concerning theiradverse impacts on biodiversity, soil fertility and quality of water, furtherbioaccumulation in the food chain that affects wildlife and human populations(Aktar et al., 2009).

This chapter introduces non-timber forest products (NTFPs) as important biological resources supporting rural livelihoods, local economies, and forest-dependent communities. It examines the definition, scope, classification, diversity, and importance of NTFPs in India. The chapter also discusses value chains, market dynamics, trade, sectoral challenges, and constraints affecting their sustainable utilization. Particular attention is given to conservation, policy frameworks, community livelihoods, and a case study of NTFPs in Maharashtra. The chapter emphasizes the need to balance resource utilization with sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation.

INTRODUCTION

India is endowed with a vast and rich diversity of natural resources particularly soil, water, climate and agro-biodiversity. To realize the optimum potential of the agricultural production system on a sustainable basis, there is a need to bestow a paramount importance in the arena of efficient management of natural resources. India with a geographical area of 329 M ha presently supports 17% of the world’s population on merely 2. 5% of world’s land area and 4% of world’s freshwater resources. India’s economy is predominantly agrarian in nature with about 72. 2% of its 1028 million population (census 2001) living in villages and about 54. 4% people (cultivators) directly depending on agriculture.

INTRODUCTION

India has varied agroclimatic conditions, which favour the cultivation of various horticultural crops. Based on the adaptability and system of cultivation, the horticulture can be grouped into four major class such as Temperate, Sub-tropical, Tropical and Arid. India has become the second largest producer of both fruits and vegetables with a total production of 46. 75 million tonnes of fruits from an area of 4. 56 million ha and 93. 16 million tonnes of vegetables from 6. 30 million ha (2003-2004). Besides, there is a tremendous scope for increasing the production of flowers, spices and condiments, plantation crops and medicinal and aromatic plants. Floriculture has emerged as a viable agribusiness. The commercial cultivation of flowers in open field conditions was much popular than protected cultivation in India. But, now- a-days, the protected cultivation has brought a great revolution in Indian floriculture and it helps for the quality production and export to earn sizeable amount of foreign exchange. India has approximately 350 ha under green house cultivation with export value of approximately Rs. 330 crores during 2003-04(APEDA). On the other hand, the prevailing climatic conditions in India are highly suitable for cultivation of the almost all spices from tropical black pepper to temperate saffron. The major spices are mainly grown in humid tropics like Western Ghats and NE States. Out of 21 agro-ecological sub regions in India, spices are grown in 14 different agro ecological sub regions. Fruits, vegetables, flowers spices and condiments, plantation crops and medicinal plants are widely distributed across the country, while plantation crops are restricted to a few regions.

Abstract

The coastal zones are very fragile owing to the reason that these form the junction between the continents and the oceans. Further the multivariate tectonic, fluvial, marine and aeolian processes, which vary independently in their degrees and duration in space and time, act in different permutations and combinations with each other and keep on constructing and destroying the landforms along the coasts. Again, as coastal zones are heavily populated; it adds further pressure on the coastal systems. The paper deals about the hierarchy of issues faced by the coastal zones like tectonic emergence and subsidence and it‘s impacts and the ways, means and needs for measuring the rate of such movements; marine regression and the need for the time series models on the land-ocean boundaries for drawing the sea level curve for India, the Quaternary deltas and the essentiality for understanding the mixture of fluvial and marine forces for the possible future forecasting models; back water modifications, the related issues and the demands for the sediment-chemo dynamics modelling; disaster vulnerabilities and mapping methodologies etc; all using the unexplored vistas of Geomatics technology. The concept has been explained by taking Tamilnadu coast as the reference region.

Introduction

The coastal zones are always fragile as these are formed by the tectonic, fluvial, marine and aeolian processes, which act independently in varying degrees and duration and occur cumulatively in different permutations and combinations along the different parts of the coasts. In addition to such inherent fragility, the coastal zones stand vulnerably exposed to various natural and anthropogenic disasters like seismicity and earth movements, tsunamis, floods, sea level rise, cyclones, coastal erosion etc. Further, owing to the enriched land and water resources, enjoyable eco systems and avenues for intra and intercontinental trades, more than 70% of the global population and the related infrastructure are clustered in the coastal zones. Hence the scientists from all over the world have started showing more attention towards the coastal regions (Ahmed, 1972). The advent of Geomatics technology comprising multi spectral and hyper spectral remote sensing, GIS, GPS, Interferometry, etc. have opened up exhaustive newer vistas in unfurling the hidden complexities of the coastal zones and to provide solutions. From amongst many, the remote sensing based studies carried out by Shailesh Nayak and his team (2004) have brought out many first time information to light about the Indian coasts. But still we will have to go a long way, as the global coasts in general and the Indian coasts in particular are confronted with a hierarchy of challenges and the Geomatics technology can provide answers for these challenging issues owing to its unique virtues. The paper narrates the unique issues of the Indian coasts and how effectively the geomatics technology can be used in solving them. This has been done by taking Tamil Nadu coast as the test area.

Abstract

Drainages have characteristic pattern and life histories with youthful stage in hilly areas, mature stage in plains and old stage in the coastal zones. The deviations from their normal life histories, especially aberrations in their flow pattern in the form of various drainage anomalies have been inferred to be the indications of dominantly the Eustatic and Isostatic changes. This, especially after the advent of Earth Observing Satellites, has attracted the geoscientists from all over the world, for studying such drainage anomalies. In this connection, a study has been undertaken in parts of South India falling south of 14° south latitude to comprehensively map some drainage anomalies like deflected drainages, eyed drainages and compressed meanders and to evolve the tectonic scenario therefrom. The mapping of such mega drainage anomalies and the related lineaments/faults from the satellite digital data and the integration of such lineaments/faults with the overall lineament map of South India showed that the study area is marked by active N–S block faults and NE–SW sinistral and NW–SE dextral strike slip faults. Such an architecture of active tectonic grains indicates that the northerly directed compressive force which has originally drifted the Indian plate towards northerly is still active and deforming the Indian plate.

Introduction

Rivers have characteristic pattern and life histories with (1) short and straight drainages performing only erosion in the hilly catchments, (2) meandering and sinuous paths doing both erosion and deposition in the plains and (3) Brownian pattern of movement doing only dumping of sediments and building up of deltas in the coastal zones. Such characteristic life history of the rivers with youthful stage in the hills, mature stage in the plains and the old stage in the coastal zones in general are controlled by the base level of erosion or Mean Sea Level (Thornbury, 1985). But, the rock types and the geological structures of the terrain related to palaeo, time transgressive and ongoing tectonism too significantly control the drainage pattern and the related river flow dynamics in all these three stages. Hence, geoscientists from all over the world have all along been showing greater interest in understanding the drainage architecture in general and their anomalies in particular. That too, after the advent of Earth Observing Satellite technology, mapping of drainage pattern and their anomalies like dentritic, semi dentritic, trellis, parallel, annular, radial, deflected, pirated, avulted, eyed, compressed, preferentially migrated and other drainage anomalies have gained greater momentum, since, besides lithology, tectonics and sea level changes, these drainage anomalies have the credibility of providing information on the flood histories, seismic vulnerability, past climates and anthropogenic phenomenon too (Chitale, 1970; Chen and Stanley, 1995; Lillesand, 1989; Matmon et al., 1999; Miller, 1937; Reid, 1992; Saintot et al., 1999; Smith et al., 1997; Twidale, 2004; Thornbury, 1985 and many others). In different parts of the Indian sub-continent too, studies have been carried out on the drainage anomalies using topographic sheets, black and white panchromatic aerial photographs and orbital multimode and multispectral satellite data, to elucidate the structural fabric, tectonic processes, climatological and other phenomenon of especially the Quaternary period (Amalkar, 1988; Babu, 1975; Bakliwal and Sharma, 1980; Barooah and Bhattacharya, 1989; Mitra et al., 2005; Murty and Mishra, 1981; Narasimhan, 1990; Oldham et al., 1901; Philip et al., 1989; Rajaguru and Kale, 1985; Ramasamy, 1991, 2006; Ramasamy and Kumanan, 2000; Ramasamy et al., 1987, 1991, 2006; Singh et al., 1996; Sood et al., 1982; Thirunaranan, 1938; Vaidyanadhan, 1971; Yashpal et al., 1980).

Abstract

The southern part of the Indian Peninsula has long been regarded as a stable area free from Pleistocene tectonics as it represents the Precambrian shield region. But the frequent earth tremors even up to a magnitude of 6.5 (Richter scale) which occurred in Tamil Nadu have started encouraging the geologists to think that it could possibly be a seismic prone zone. In addition, images acquired by the polar orbiting satellites offered valuable information on the fracture systems and fluvial anomalies suggesting possible Pleistocene tectonism in South India. Hence, a study has been undertaken to evaluate the signatures of Pleistocene tectonism in South India using IRS-lA, LISS-1 FCC imagery (Indian Remote Sensing Satellite lA, Linear Imaging Self Scanning 1, False Colour Composite) involving band 2, 3 and 4 under blue, green and red bands respectively.

The study has brought out a series of E-W trending cymatogenic arches and N-S trending extension, NE-SW trending sinistral, NW-SE trending dextral and E-W trending release fractures with characteristic signatures supporting Pleistocene tectonism in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

On the basis of such morphotectonic features, a Pleistocene tectonic model has been presented with a N-S trending greatest principal stress and an E-W oriented least principal stress related to the movement of the Indian plate towards the Tibetan plate. Based on the model developed for Tamil Nadu and Kerala, a series of E-W trending cymatogenic arches and deeps have been proposed for Cochin- Rameswaram in the south to the Himalayas in the north. Further studies for seismotectonics, geothermal resources and hydrocarbon search have also been suggested along such arches and deeps.

5.1 Introduction

A Crop Simulation Model is a mathematical model which describes crop growth and development processes as a function of environment, soil conditions, and crop management. Simulation model is a schematic representation which works on set of underlying assumptions, equations and algorithms, closely replicating the behaviour of the agricultural systems. A crop growth simulation model predicts the harvestable yield. Apart from this final state of crop production, the model also provides a host of quantitative information about major processes involved in the various stages of crop development. The information covers each component of the crop such as leaves, stems, roots and harvestable products as they change over time, including the changes in soil moisture and nutrient status.

An increase in the population, demands an increase in agricultural production with available resources. Efficient management of available resources under varying weather conditions is important for increasing agricultural productivity. Besides that, the emphasis of agricultural production changes from quantity to quality and sustainability (Aggarwal et al., 2000). Solution of these new challenges lies in understanding the interaction of the numerous elements affecting the plant growth and generating a crop growth model. This extremely complicated information needs to be processed and interpreted on a spatial scale. Information technology which has unleashed new frontiers in data analysis and automation is the driving force behind this model generation. These powerful computer programmes simulate the crop growth or yield of crops under various management regimes and provide near real time information to help farmers to make strategic decision in the management of their crops.

6.1. Introduction

A river is a large natural waterway. The source of a river may be a lake, a spring, or a collection of small streams, known as headwaters. From their source, all rivers flow downhill, typically terminating in the ocean. The mouth, or lower end, of a river is known as its base level.

A river water is confined to a channel, made up of a stream bed between banks. Most rainfall on land passes through a river on its way to the ocean. Smaller side streams that join a river are tributaries. The scientific term for any flowing natural waterway is a stream; so in technical language, the term river is just a shorthand way to refer to a large stream. Rivers throughout history have been the source and support for civilization, and many major cities today are near a river of some sort (Fig. 6.1).

6.1.1 Topography

A river conducts water by constantly flowing from a higher to a lower elevation, thereby converting the potential energy of the water into kinetic energy. It starts to form loops and snakes through the plain by eroding the river banks. Sometimes the river will cut off a loop, shortening the channel and forming an oxbow lake from the cut off section. Rivers that carry large amounts of sediment may develop conspicuous deltas at their mouths, if conditions permit. Rivers, whose mouths are in saline tidal waters, may form estuaries. River mouths may also be rias.

4.1 Defining erosivity and erodibility

Rainfall erosion is the interaction of two items - the rain and the soil. The amount of erosion which occurs in any given circumstances will be influenced by both, and our study of the processes of soil erosion is simplified by considering the two aspects separately.

We know from observation that one storm can cause more erosion than another on the same land, and we also know that the same storm will cause more erosion on one field than on another. The effect of the rain is called erosivity and the effect of the soil is called erodibility. The way they differ is best explained by examples.

Let us imagine an experiment station which has over its whole area exactly the same soil type and slope. Assume also that the whole of the station is covered by a completely uniform crop. If the amount of erosion taking place during each storm were measured, the amount would be influenced only by the nature of the rain. Comparing the effect of one storm with that of another storm would provide a relative measure of the power of each storm to cause erosion, and that is what is meant by erosivity. This will enable us to say that on this imaginary experiment station, storm A caused a soil loss of X kilograms per hectare and storm B caused a soil loss of Y kilograms per hectare. If Y is half of X, then the erosivity of storm B is half of the erosivity of storm A.

11.1 The farmer’s point of view

In the last chapter possible conservation practices were reviewed in groups according to their purpose in terms of influencing runoff or soil loss. Now, looking at ways of limiting soil degradation by improved land husbandry, the primary consideration is to look at the alternatives from the farmer’s point of view. In fact we need to be very wary of manual-type recommendations. A better approach is to offer a menu of alternatives, and the role of the professional is to help the farmer choose what is appropriate for his or her circumstances. A recent review of technologies acceptable to resource-poor farmers points out that combining practices into a farming system must take account not only of the physical factors such as soil and climate, but equally the available resource inputs, especially cash and labour, and the farmer’s objectives (STOCKING 1993).

The objectives of a commercial farmer are usually to maximize yield and income, but the subsistence farmer is likely to be more interested in improving food security by reducing the risk of failure, or improving the return on inputs of seed, fertilizer and labour, or improving the quality of life by reducing drudgery, particularly relevant in the case of women farmers.

We need a new approach to the farmer when recommending changes to farming practice. Instead of recommending practices because they will reduce erosion, we should show how they can lead to increased production. For example, practices which lead to better soil structure, more organic matter, or more moisture-holding capacity should be put forward because they improve yield, not because they reduce the soil erodibility. Increasing infiltration from better ground cover or the use of contour farming or ridging can result in better crops as well as reducing soil loss. Improved crop management could include more use of fertilizer and manures or crop rotations. These practices will make more sense to the farmer if they are recommended as leading to better production, which he can instinctively appreciate as desirable, rather than because they will reduce soil erosion which is likely to be a less important objective.

Abstract

Continental erosion and fluvial transport play an important role enhancing mobilization of organic carbon from soils and transferring this pool to the ocean through downstream rivers and streams. The Ganges-Brahmaputra river system represents one of the largest transporters of terrestrial carbon to ocean. Intensive agriculture in the Ganges basin coupled with atmospheric deposition (AD) of nitrogen may render the soil more prone to erosion loss of carbon and nutrients. The aims of this study were to quantify atmospheric deposition of nitrogen (AD-N) in the watershed and to assess the influence of land use and AD-N on carbon and nitrogen transport in Ganga River. We collected samples in summer low flow along a 1595 km long transect of the river to assess the status of DOC under variable land use and AD-N input and, at monthly intervals along a 35 km long transect to understand seasonal patterns and the influence of local control. Our study shows average deposition of reactive-N (NO₃^- + NH₄⁺) range from 19.7 kg ha^-1yr-1 in upper stretch to 38.6 kg ha-1yr-1 in the middle stretch. The AD-N in lower stretch was almost similar to the values recorded in the middle stretch of the watershed. The average concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in the river range from 0.62 to 5.3 mg L-1 and 52.0 to 385.6 µg L-1 respectively. The land-derived carbon and nitrogen emerging in surface runoff showed positive correlation with AD-N and the river DOC showed synchrony with land use, AD-N and autochthonous carbon pool. Our data indicate that DOC in Ganga River is rising and the land use together with AD-N is an important driver of rising DOC. We suggest that future climate model should consider large scale regional time series data on changing state of atmosphere-land-water coupling and associated shifts in carbon and nutrient transport of major rivers. This has relevance predicting region specific climate change drivers and preparing action plan for integrated river basin management (IRBM).

Abstract

While multiple species interact with each other in variable environments, they employ a variety of interaction strategies to withstand variation in environmental conditions. Phenotypic plasticity is one such mean allowing species to cope with environmental challenges often posed by the variation in consumer pressure, disturbances, and predation risks. In response to these and other environmental cues, expressed phenotypes can alter the sign and strength of interactions among species as these responses are often reflected in increased or decreased species competitive or facilitative abilities. Besides phenotypic plasticity, species interactions also depend on continued variation in abundances or densities of interacting species commonly termed as density-dependent interactions. Such density-dependence follows the law of diminishing returns, which means that while an individual species adds a density-dependent weight to the performance of other species, with increasing accounts, at a certain level of interaction it provides diminishing returns resulting in decreased population growth of the species. Thus, species interactions in variable environments hold two interdependent opposing forces: the growth-escalating and the growth-diminishing forces. The first one is resulted from adaptive phenotypic responses to variable environments and the second one is resulted from dynamic changes of abundances or densities of interacting species. Based on this conceptual framework, we describe community dynamics that are shaped by the balance of these two forces in variable environment. By analyzing these dynamics, we then seek underlying mechanism of Grim’s classic humped-back model of productivity-diversity relationship and also provide an alternative explanation for the intermediate disturbance hypothesis.

Abstract

Ever growing population and associated food scarcity are the major issues of concern globally. Microorganisms are the ultimate solution for addressing this severe problem in association with recent advances made in genomics and molecular biology. Many bacterial and fungal species which are in association with plant rhizosphere soil can immensely contribute in better growth and developments, ultimately leading to better yield. Exploring these novel organisms happens to be the need of an hour. Metagenomics and next generation sequencing technologies can contribute in identifying those microbes which are otherwise impossible to cultivate traditionally.

Abstract

Soil salinization is an important factor limiting crop production, mainly in the arid and semiarid regions of the world. Nevertheless, plants naturally have evolved several physiological, biochemical and molecular mechanisms to establish and thrive in salt stressed soils. In addition to breeding crops for salt tolerance, recent emphasis is on exploring the possible role of plant-microbe interactions in amelioration of salt stress in plants. It is now well established that arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis alleviates the effect of salt stress in plants. Further, available evidence does suggest that AM symbiosis regulates many of the plant’s salt stress alleviation mechanisms. However, the molecular basis for many of these mechanisms is yet to be ascertained. In this chapter, we summarize the current knowledge on the role of AM symbiosis in alleviation of salt stress in crop plants, which now appears to be a promising strategy to improve crop yield in salt stressed soils.

1.1 Water and its Importance

Water has played a crucial role in sustainace of lives of all living beings including animals, plants and human beings in this earth since time immemorial. It is there since the creation of the nature and will probably remain till the destruction of the nature. It is used in multifarious uses including domestic, industrial, agricultural, recreational and many other uses. It occurs in the nature in practically three forms i.e. solid, liquid and gaseous forms. All the three forms are important to living beings; but the liquid form of water is more beneficial. The weight of the water helps in running hydroelectric turbines, the density of water helps in floating the ships, the steam energy produced by heating the water helps to run the locomotives and thus is beneficial in many ways. It is considered as the most important resource of the society. It has become part and partial in our life so that we cannot live without water. That is why water is called as life.

The global production of cocoa is around 36.49 lakh tonnes against the demand of 37.37 lakh tonnes. Ivory Coast leads in cocoa production in the world with a contribution of 38 per cent, followed by Ghana and Indonesia. Unlike in other crops, it appears that the production and demand of cocoa at the global level match each other to a large extent. However, the recent trends in the world production of cocoa beans indicated that there was a drop of nine per cent in 2006–07, declining from 3.8 million tonnes in 2005–06 to 3.4 million tonnes in 2006–07 (Table 9.1). It was attributed to unfavourable conditions in many cocoa producing areas. West Africa, the main cocoa producing region, was hit by a severe harmattan (dusty dry wind from November to March) and its inherent dry weather, which lasted from the end of 2006 to February 2007, had a strong negative impact on global cocoa production. In Asia and South America, El Nino- related weather conditions developed in September 2006 and continued until the beginning of 2007. It led to relatively low cocoa production in 2007–07. However, it was rebounced in 2007– 08 to some extent though it was low (36.49 lakh tonnes) when compared to that of 2005–06. The favourable weather which prevailed over most of the cocoa growing regions during 2002–03 and 2003–04 helped to achieve better production during the above years while dip in the global production in 2006–07 due to unfavourable weather. It reveals that the weather abnormalities like floods, droughts, cold and heat waves across the cocoa growing regions of the world adversely affect the Coca production and the cocoa industry is likely to suffer.

Abstract

Ongoing rise in human population and affluence, and socioeconomic imperatives continue to demand more efficient and productive use of global finite resources. This is particularly true with water which society has to share between its domestic, industrial, agricultural, environmental and recreational purposes. With greater concern for nature and environment, and the socioeconomic development more water must be allocated to non-agricultural uses. Increasing crop water productivity (WP) is a key response option conserves water, energy and soil while satisfying society’s increasing demand for crops for agricultural products. Improvements to crop WP help to meet rising demands for food from a growing, wealthier, and increasingly urbanized population, when at the same time there are pressures to reallocate water from agriculture to cities and to make more water available for environmental uses contribute to the urgency for achieving gains in agricultural water management. The papers in addition to the rationale and basic concept of crop WP, explore the techniques for crop WP increases.

Abstract

Electronic waste or e-waste is one of the emerging problems in developed and developing countries worldwide. The constantly changing today’s world of technology has led to the serious problem of e-waste. The previous studies show that India has generated 0.6 million tons of e-waste in 2014 which may increase to 0.7 to 0.9 million tons by 2015–2016. E-waste constitutes multiple components some of which are toxic that can cause serious health and environmental issues if not handled properly. The challenge is to develop innovative and cost-effective solutions to decontaminate polluted environments, to make them safe for human habitation and consumption, and to protect the functioning of the ecosystems which support life. Biological approach is currently applied to recovery of metals from contaminated soil, groundwater, surface water, and sediments including air.

India shares 16% of the world population, while its land is only 2% of the total geographical area of the world. Naturally, the pressure on the land is often beyond its carrying capacity. Therefore, the productive lands, especially the farmlands in the India are in the constant process of various degrees of degradation and are fast turning into wastelands. At present, approximately 68.35 million hectare area of the land is lying as wastelands in India. Out of these lands, approximately 50% lands are such non-forest lands, which can be made fertile again if treated properly. It was unprotected non-forestlands, which suffered the maximum degradation mainly due to the tremendous biotic pressure on it. In the last 50 years it is India's lush green village forests and woodlots have been deforested to the maximum.

This paper is the result of strong belief that if earth observation and geospatial techniques could be applied to a village to plan its natural resources in sustainable manner, the potential of this technique for common man is harnessed maximum. Water has become a scarce resource all over the World. Water resources of Earth can be classified as surface water and groundwater in which groundwater is the main source for the drinking, domestic and agriculture. The Pudukkottai district is one of the chronic drought prone areas in Tamil Nadu. But, at the same time, the district is pitted with over 5,400 tanks/water bodies widely distributed throughout in general and clustered more in Vellar delta in particular, as the interlobel depressions have provided basic depressions for the surface water to accumulate. However, these surface water bodies are heavily silted. In Pudukkottai district, there are three divergent aquifer systems, hard rock aquifer system in the western, sedimentary aquifer system constituted by the Tertiary Sandstone (Cuddalore Sandstone) in the central and Quaternary aquifer system constituted by fluvial, fluvio-marine and marine systems in the eastern parts of the district.

India has diversified agro-climatic conditions with significant variability in climatic factors viz, rainfall pattern, temperature, humidity, sunshine hours and wind speed etc. A no of fruit crops and vegetable crops are grown in India with significant differences in climatic requirements for sustainable growth and production of these crops. Attempt has also been made to have off season production of horticultural crops. Weather variability could also play a pivotal role in disease and pest incidence. So, forecasting of yield along with disease pest incidence should be given top priority to save the crop from weather vagaries and increase the crop productivity.

ABSTRACT
Methanogens are primarily anaerobic Archaebacteria representing the most primitive earthly creatures, alive since about 3.5 billion years. While oxygen inhibit their activity, they adapt well in a variety of ecological niche, viz., the intestinal tracts of insects and animals including ruminants, sewage digesters, groundwater and deep soil/water, etc. They are involved in biomethanation that converts organic polymers, including the complex recalcitrant lignocelluloses, to CH₄ and CO₂. Enhancing the process by optimising the physical, chemical and molecular parameters is an interesting biotechnology. Molecular research is rapidly progressing on the genomics, gene and its regulation, and methanogenesis as it expresses. Identifying novel species expressing methanogenesis and manipulating the genetic make-up including through cloning in recent years will set goals and leads for future investigations. The biomethanation enzyme Methyl-CoM-reductase (Mcr) constitutes about 10% of the methanogen protein. Due to its abundance and significance, elucidating its structure and its synthesis and regulation mechanism has received much attention recently. Mcr-coding genes from methanogens have been cloned and sequenced. An approach at the molecular level to enhance biomethanation seems to lie in metagenomics. The microbiology, biochemistry, the roles of the participating microbes, their molecular biology and applications in methanogenesis are discussed in this chapter.

ABSTRACT
Rice straw is one of the most abundant lignocellulosic agricultural wastes in India and can be used as a major resource for biogas production. The structure of rice straw is complex and is made up mainly of cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin. The lignin physically shields the cellulose and hemicelluloses, the main components which can be converted to energy, and hinders the access of microbial enzymes to these carbohydrate moieties. To overcome this making the straw a potential resource of biogas production, effective pretreatment is necessary that can efficiently hydrolyse the straw and make it accessible to cellulolytic enzymes and methanogens. Various pretreatment methods which are employed currently in the market are discussed here. For a process to be economically feasible it is necessary that the pretreatment be efficient as well as cost effective. To gain some insights into this aspect, the techno-commercial feasibility of Biomethanation of rice straw has been discussed.
