The greenhouse effect is thought to be due to the absorption of solar infrared (IR) radiation by gases and the earth’s surfaces, which, as a result, is heated and then reemit IR radiation at low frequency with a high absorptive power. In fact greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are essential for maintaining life on earth, as without them the planet would be permanently frozen because all of the incoming heat from the sun would be radiated back into space by the earth’s surface (Moss, 1993). The threshold concentration of these gases at which their greenhouse effect would be minimized is not known, but it is accepted that their concentrations in the atmosphere should not be allowed to continue to rise. In recent years, there has been an increase in public concern over environmental damage originating from animal feeding operations.

24. IGNEOUS ROCKS

Introduction : Petros = rocks and logos = science

Petrology means the science of rocks. It deals with the mode of occurrence composition, classification and origin of rocks and their relation to geological processes and history of the earth.

Rocks can be studies in two ways : The study of rocks as specimens in the laboratory is called Petrography which places emphasis on the purely descriptive part from textural mineralogical and chemical point of view. Petrogenesis deals with the origin and processes of formation of rocks. Petrology is a broader term which includes both petrography and petrogenesis.

Igneous rocks are formed by cooling and solidification of magma, either underneath the earth’s surface or above the earth’s surface.

Introduction

National prosperity and human resources development are primarily shaped by the availability of natural resources and their use. None the less, the benefits are quite often negated by the resultant environmental degradation concomitant with their utilisation for economic values. The problems of environmental degradation have assumed critical dimensions in many parts of India due to resources exploitation; industrialisation and urbanisation, unchecked population growth and a never ending quest for energy to meet the increasing demands. Moreover, improper utilisation of resources has resulted in such environmental problems as soil erosion, waterlogging, floods, droughts and pollution of various types besides socio-economic disparity among people.

After the 1972 Stockholm conference on Human Environment and Development, there has been a phenomenal increase in the worldwide interest in the environmental issues associated with development. Consequently, the focus of development has shifted to environment friendly and sustainable developmental planning in recent years. The Rio Summit (June 3-14, 1992) further emphasised the fact that earth is an integral and interdependent system, which require sustainable developmental planning. During deliberations of the Rio Summit (Earth Summit), it was emphasised that satellite imagery will be quite helpful in monitoring earth’s environment.

India has a long tradition of environmental protection and has enacted laws during the last three decades to give further impetus to the conservation of natural resources and protection of environment. Some of the important laws are:

The remains of animals and plants of past ages preserved in the rocks are known as fossils, the study of which forms the subject of Palaeontology. The conditions for an animal or plant to become a fossil are firstly it must possess skeleton of some kind or some hard parts, since the soft parts are decomposed rapidly, secondly the organism must be covered up by sedimentary layer, otherwise it will soon crumble to pieces.

5.1 Modes of Preservation of Fossils

The conditions in which fossils occur depends, on their original composition and on the material in which they are embedded. The chief types are as follow:

5.1.1 The entire organism preserved

Occasionally the soft parts of the organism are preserved as well as the skeleton, the whole having suffered very little change. Instances of this are the woolly rhinoceros and mammoth found frozen in the mud and ice in Northern Siberia. Insects encased in fossil resin, known as amber, are found in the Oligocene beds in the Baltic shores of Persia, but the soft part of organisms are rarely preserved.

5.1.2 The skeleton preserved almost unchanged

Sometimes where the skeleton alone is preserved, it remains almost in its original condition, except that it has lost its organic matter. Thus the shells in the Pliocene beds of England differ from living ones only in being lighter, more porous and generally colourless. In some instances a certain amount of mineral matter, such as carbonate of lime, has been added to the skeleton, making it heavier and more compact.

4.1. Introduction

Presently, in the world, there are 195 countries according to the United Nations, and the number would even go up to 247 if we consider the disputed territories like Isle of Man, Hong Kong, etc. (United Nations, 2016) (Kershner, 2020). But the majority of the countries are still struggling to provide basic life-supporting amenities like nutrition, shelter, and employment. Conjointly, termed as emerging and developing countries such as India, Vietnam, Venezuela, Utopia, etc. (Ahmed and Shimada, 2019). Most of the developing countries are situated mainly in the continent of Africa, Asia and South America. They have got independence for the European countries like England, France, Portugal and Spain in the mid and late 20th century. 

Introduction to Energy Sources

Consumption of nonrenewable energy sources has caused more environmental harm than any other human activity during the last century. Electricity generated from fossil fuels like coal and crude oil has resulted in excessive levels of hazardous gases in the environment. As a result, several issues exist now, such as ozone depletion and global warming. Vehicle pollution has also been a significant issue.

As a result, alternative energy sources have become increasingly vital and relevant in today’s society. These sources, such as the sun and wind, can never be depleted and are hence referred to as renewable. They produce fewer emissions and are readily available locally. Their application has the potential to significantly reduce chemical, radioactive, and thermal pollution. They stand out as a promising source of infinite clean energy. These are also known as non-conventional energy sources.

The vulnerability of agriculture and livelihoods in the Member Countries of the Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) poses a significant threat to achieving climate- resilient rural development. CIRDAP includes 15 member countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam [CIRDAP, 2023]. ]. In many Asian countries, agriculture is still practiced using traditional methods that do not incorporate climate data or modern techniques. This reliance leads to several challenges, such as reduced productivity and crop diversity, increased vulnerability to weather fluctuations, and hindrance in establishing resilient value chains. For example, in Iran's rural sector, challenges such as centralized planning, patriarchal norms, inefficient extension systems, and weak inter-agency coordination are uniquely defining features (CIRDAP, 2025). However, evidence shows these challenges are widespread across the region:

In recent decades, environmental contamination has emerged as a seriousthreat to our modern society. The relentless growth of urbanization andindustrialization leads to the ever-increasing production of hazardouschemicals. Safe disposal of these hazardous materials is crucial, as releasingthem into an already strained environment has severe consequences. Theexponential rise in human activity is directly related to the alarming risein local and global pollution levels, which severely disturbs the balance ofecosystems. Industrial activities, in particular, are a major source of highlyhazardous chemicals such as dyes, pigments, and aromatic compounds,which pose a serious threat to the environment. In India, the textile industry, amajor force driving the country’s economic growth, also ranks asthsecondlargestpolluter. The printing, finishing, and dyeing processes used in textileproduction generate significant waste (Dubey et al., 2018). Dyes, a majorsource of pollution in this industry, are syntheticand complex in structure. Thiscomplexity makes them poorly soluble in water, hindering biodegradation andposing a long-term environmental concern. The global textile industry utilizesa wide range of dyes, with estimates indicating over 100,000 commerciallyavailable options. The worldwide production of these dyes is estimated to be700,000 tons per year (Al-Tohamy et al., 2020). However, dye contaminationis a major challenge in this industry. Studies indicate that during synthesisand dyeing processes, a significant portion, ranging from 10% to 15% of thetotal dyestuffs used ends up released into global water bodies (Leal et al.,2020). Climate change (floods, droughts, rise of temperature and sea level) can directly impact the incidence of water related diseases through effects on water temperature and precipitation frequency and intensity. This chapter focuses on some common water quality related diseases that may enhance due to climate change such as arsenicosis, cholera, cyanobacterial toxins, dengue, diarrhoea and malaria. Arsenicosis is the disease caused by arsenic (As) contamination. As poisoning via groundwater has become a worldwide problem with 21 countries experiencing As groundwater contamination including Bangladesh, India, and China. In Bangladesh, out of 64 districts, As levels in 60 districts have exceeded WHO recommended guidelines of 10 µg/L and in 51 districts it exceeded Bangladesh recommended guidelines of above 50 µg/L. Chronic exposure to As has been linked to carcinogenic effects in both humans and animals. These include cancer of the various skins and internal organs (lung, bladder, liver and kidney) and reproductive and developmental effects; cardiovascular disease; reduced intellectual function in children and mortality. Alternate floods and droughts (due to climate change) have been found associated with the release of As and contamination of groundwater in Bangladesh, therefore may increase the risks of the disease due to rise of extreme events such as floods and droughts. Cholera is a diarrhoeal disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. In 2012, WHO reported 245, 3931 cases of cholera in 48 countries, with more than 3,034 deaths with a case-fatality rate (CFR) of 1.2%. The highest cases were from Africa, followed by Latin America and Asia. The epidemic of cholera is reported to be linked strongly with climate change. Changes in temperature, salinity, rainfall and abundance of phytoplankton have been shown to cause an impact on distribution and survival of V. cholerae. In Bangladesh, cholera (cholera-toxin producing strain of V. cholerae) outbreaks are related to plankton blooms and rise of sea temperature.

Introduction

Desertification, which is considered a major threat in the drylands of the world, is not about advancing boundaries of the existing deserts, but about land degradation in the arid, semi-arid and the dry sub-humid regions, which together form the drylands (Anon., 1995). Secular variation in climate that has resulted in periodic expansion and contraction of the desert boundaries and regional-scale changes in vegetation condition (Tucker et al., 1991; Nemani et al., 2003; Hickler et al., 2005) is one of the drivers of desertification. Human activities constitute the other major driver. According to Geist and Lambin (2004) the prominent core variables that drive degradation are climatic, economic, institutional, national policies, population growth and remote influences.

Introduction

Water preceded all forms of life on earth and is believed to be the very origin of all organic life forms. For ages water was forming oceans, separating landmasses and shaping the terrain. It further influenced the emerging atmosphere of the young planet. The first organism formed and began to evolve in the primeval oceans. Mankind entered into the scene several million years later. The history is rather too long and infinitely complex. Variety of models with different degrees of certitude and consensus attempt to cogently explain what could have happened. But in spite of all the differences on the course of evolution, there is a universal consensus that water played a decisive role in the changes.

Across the globe, mankind managed to establish different civilizations with dissimilar cultural and material advancements much later. But then invariably all civilizations considered water holy and water bodies were sacred places. Holy wells, springs, rivers, cenotaphs were held in awe all through human history. The mysterious properties of water are studied from time immemorial. And water indeed is a strange compound! Availability of water for consumption and agriculture has determined the zenith and nadir of surviving and extinct civilizations.

Ancient Indian temples as part of design, have a prominent sacred well or a pond with an associated purana/myth narrating the mystical properties of the theertha / waterbody. It is still is a living tradition. In the west wishing wells survive from remote antiquity.

Introduction

Precision Farming (PF) revolves around the idea that any agricultural land contains wide spatial variations in soil types, nutrient availability, and other important factors. If these variations are not taken into account, then there may be a loss in productivity. Precision farming is one of the most scientific and modern approaches to sustainable agriculture that has gained momentum in 21^st century. Consider the situation: ‘A farmer goes to his/her field with his/her Global Positioning System (GPS) guided tractor. The GPS senses the exact location of the tractor within the field. It sends the signal to a computer on the tractor that has a Geographical Information System (GIS), storing the soil nutrient requirements map in it. GIS, in consultation with a Decision Support System, decides what is the exact requirement of the fertilizer for a given location and then commands a variable rate fertilizer applicator, attached with the tractor, to apply the exact dose at that precise location. All this is done within a second, before the tractor moves further.’ This may sound like an excerpt from a scientific fiction, but this is what precision farming means to the large growers of the United States or European countries and day is not far off when it will be feasible for large Indian farmers as well.

PF refers to a developing agricultural management system that promotes variable management practices within a field according to site or soil conditions. Within a short span of time, this concept has been described with various names viz. farming by soil; farming soil, not fields; farming by the foot; spatially prescriptive farming; computer aided farming; farming by computer; farming by satellite; high-tech sustainable agriculture; soil-specific crop management; site-specific farming; and site-specific crop management.

ABSORPTION (of light): A process by which light is taken-up by another material. Examples include soot consisting of tiny black particles, which absorb all visible light; and nitrogen dioxide, a pollutant mostly from diesel and gasoline engines, that absorbs blue light resulting in air with a brown tint.

Historical perspective: Planting of single crops or mono-cultural agriculture—is a recent invention of the industrial agricultural complex (Hirst, 2019). While unequivocal archaeological evidence is difficult to come by, it’s believed that most agricultural field systems in the past involved some form of mixed cropping. That’s because of even botanical evidence of plant residues such as starches or phytoliths of multiple crops are discovered in an ancient fields (Hirst, 2019). Mixed cropping, also known as polyculture, or co-cultivation, is a type of agriculture that involves planting two or more crop plants simultaneously in the same field so that they grow together. The primary reason for prehistoric multi or mixed cropping probably had more to do with the needs of the farmer’s family and perhaps to avoid crop failure. It’s possible that certain plants adapted to multi-cropping over time disappeared as a result of the domestication process (Hirst 2016).

Dryland agriculture is a more vulnerable system in view of its high dependency on monsoon rains which are of aberrant nature. The risk of crop failure and poor yields always restrain farmers from investing on new technologies and input use.

Concept of resilience

Resilience is used to describe the magnitude of a disturbance that a system can withstand without crossing threshold into a new structure or dynamic. Resilience is defined as “the ability of a system and its component parts to anticipate, absorb, accommodate, or escape from unacceptable standards of living due to the effects of a hazardous event, in a timely and efficient manner”. In other words, resilience describes the capacity of communities in a given context or landscape to maintain and improve their livelihoods—despite stresses and shocks—through the sustainable management of natural resources while maintaining key ecological functions

10.1 Introduction
Having explored the advanced analytical techniques that allow us to extract meaningful insights and build predictive models from meteorological data, we now arrive at a crucial stage in the scientific process: communication and understanding. The chapter, “Visualization of Meteorological Data,” focuses on the art and science of transforming complex numerical datasets into insightful visual representations. In a field as inherently spatial and temporal as meteorology, effective visualization is not just about making pretty pictures;it is a fundamental tool for exploration, analysis, and the clear conveyance  of information about atmospheric phenomena (Fig. 10.1).
Consider the sheer volume and multifaceted nature of meteorological data. We grapple with variables spanning three spatial dimensions (and often more when considering altitude), evolving dynamically over time, and encompassing a wide array of physical quantities – temperature, pressure, wind vectors, humidity, precipitation rates, radiation fluxes, and more. Raw numbers and statistical summaries, while essential for quantitative analysis, often fail to reveal the intricate spatial patterns, temporal evolutions, and interrelationships that characterize weather and climate. This is where visualization steps in,
acting as a bridge between the abstract world of numerical data and our intuitive human capacity for visual pattern recognition.

Throughout human history, people across the globe have sought to understand and predict the ever-changing skies. From the scorching deserts of North Africa to the lush rainforests of South America, and from the snow-capped Himalayas to the vast Australian outback, ancient cultures developed unique methods to forecast the weather. These traditional knowledge systems, often passed downthrough oral traditions and  storytelling, reflected the specific environmental contexts, mythological beliefs, and spiritual practices of each community. In ancient China, royal astronomers meticulously recorded weather patterns and planetary movements to guide agricultural planning and imperial decisionmakingIn Greece, philosophers like Aristotle and Theophrastus wrote extensively on weather signs and forecasting methods. In Africa, tribal communities observed animal migrations and plant behaviors to anticipate seasonal changes. Native American tribes used lunar cycles and star constellations to predict weather patterns, while ancient Indians studied the movements of planets and nakshatras (lunar mansions) to forecast monsoon rains.

While genetic potential and optimal climatic conditions define the upper limits, the vast majority of agricultural systems globally operate under less-than-ideal circumstances. Among the most pervasive and impactful constraints on crop productivity are moisture (water) and nutrient limitations. These two factors, either individually or in complex interaction, are frequently the primary drivers of the yield gap, preventing crops from expressing their full genetic potential and significantly impacting farm profitability and regional food security. Water, as the universal solvent and a direct participant in photosynthesis and countless metabolic processes, is indispensable for plant life. However, its availability in agricultural systems is highly variable and often insufficient. From the rainfed fields dependent on increasingly erratic rainfall patterns to irrigated lands facing dwindling water resources, moisture stress – encompassing both drought and, paradoxically, waterlogging – poses an immense challenge. Drought alone accounts for a substantial portion of global crop losses, directly affecting plant physiological functions, growth, and ultimately, yield. Conversely, excessive moisture can lead to anaerobic soil conditions, nutrient leaching, and root damage, equally debilitating for crop performance. Parallel to moisture, the availability and judicious management of essential plant nutrients are foundational to productive agriculture. Plants require a suite of macro- and micronutrients for healthy growth, enzymatic activity, and the synthesis of biomass. Soils, over time and with continuous cropping, often become depleted of these vital elements, necessitating external application through fertilizers or the enhancement of natural nutrient cycling processes. This chapter delves into the concepts of evaporation, transpiration, their combined effect as evapotranspiration, and how these relate to overall crop water use (Fig.5.1).

Definition: Evaporation is the physical process by which liquid water is converted into water vapor and transferred from the land surface (e.g., bare soil, water bodies, or wet plant surfaces) into the atmosphere. It is purely a physical process driven by solar energy and the vapor pressure gradient between the surface and the air.

1. Introduction
The term “plastic” is derived from the Greek word “Plasticos" whichmeans to be capable of molding into various sizes and shapes. Daily usedsynthetic plastics are categorized based on their physical and chemicalproperties, such as thermoplastic and thermosetting. (i) Thermoplastics: Astheir names suggest, thermoplastic polymers melt and turn into a plastic orrubbery state when exposed to heat. They have various numbers of polymericchains and are the most widely used plastics in day-to-day life. Examples ofthermoplastics are Polystyrene(PS), Polyvinylchloride (PVC), Polypropylene(PP), Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), Polyethylene (PE) etc. (Massy,2017), (Sharma et al., 2017). (ii) Thermosetting polymers: As the namesuggests, they set or harden permanently when heated (Massy, 2017). Due totheirstrong crosslinked structure, they are non-recyclable polymers. Flood diversion redirects part or all of an excessive flow away from a vulnerable river reach, settlement, or agricultural area. Water may be conveyed through diversion channels, floodways, canals, tunnels, spillways, or natural depressions and discharged into another river, reservoir, wetland, or safe storage area. A diversion scheme must have sufficient capacity and a dependable control structure while avoiding unacceptable flooding, erosion, sediment deposition, or environmental damage elsewhere. This chapter explains the purpose, principles, and methods of flood diversion. It covers site selection, diversion routes, hydraulic and structural components, design discharge, operational requirements, advantages, limitations, maintenance needs, and the role of diversions within integrated basin-level flood-control planning.

Flood-control economics compares the financial, social, and environmental costs of flood damage with the costs and benefits of alternative mitigation measures. Because complete protection is generally impractical, planners must identify an economically justified level of risk reduction. Evaluation considers construction, operation, maintenance, rehabilitation, residual risk, avoided losses, project life, discount rates, and direct and indirect benefits. This chapter introduces economic assessment of flood-control projects and examines flood-damage estimation, depth-damage relationships, benefit-cost analysis, present value, and investment decision criteria. It also considers remote-sensing approaches for mapping inundation and assessing losses. The discussion supports the selection of measures that are technically feasible, socially acceptable, environmentally responsible, and economically efficient.

Of the various weather elements affecting crops, temperature and rainfall are perhaps the most important. It is the reason for the development of special flora and fauna in different climatic zones of the world as seen in the tropical, temperate and frigid zones. The tropical regions get abundant solar heat and the vegetation is high while it is low in the temperate regions. The vegetation is very little in the frigid zones. Similarly, natural vegetation is at its poor growth in the Arid Climates and better in the Humid Tropics. Xerophytes are confined to the Arid Climates where low rainfall is seen, while hydrophytes are confined to the Humid Tropics. Mesophytes are intermediate in their water requirement. Most of the crops are included in this group. If the crops are selected for cultivation on the basis of the optimum climatic requirements, it is likely that crop production can be maximised under rainfed as well as irrigated conditions. For example, coconut is grown in vast areas across the East and West Coasts of the Country in different agroclimatic zones and known as a coastal tree. It gives reasonably better yield in terms of quantity and quality in the Humid Tropics under rainfed conditions. However, the coconut yield scenario is totally different when the crop is cultivated in Semi-arid Tropics under irrigation. Therefore, it is a complex phenomenon to understand the influence of weather and climate on crops under rainfed and irrigated conditions in various climatic zones. The production potential of crops under field conditions could be explained through crop-wise agroclimatic zonation, whether the crop is well-suited with minimum inputs for maximising yields under rainfed conditions, but not under irrigated conditions due to crop manipulation. Many attempts were made to explain the climatic boundaries for various crops based on agroclimatic indices under rainfed conditions.

Ever since the dawn of civilization, dependence on plants has been indispensable for human survival. Transformation from food gathering to settled agriculture necessitated domestication of plant species useful for mankind leading to co-evolution of plants and man in absolute harmony with nature. Natural disasters like famines, floods, epidemics have often led people to search new plant species for human consumption. Out of an estimated total of 80,000 plants of possible economic use, about 30,000 plants have been found to be edible in nature and approximately 7,000 plants have been cultivated by mankind at one time or the other, of which only 158 plants are widely used for food (Wilson, 1992). Among these, 30 crops provide 90% of the world’s food and only 10 crops supply 75% of the world’s food budget. Out of the above only three crops, rice, wheat and maize provide 60% of the world’s total food requirement (Paroda, 2000). This dangerously narrow level of food base may imperil the existence of mankind during a time of impending crisis in unforeseen times in the future.

16.1 Introduction

The ancient Greek philosopher ‘Heraclitus’ said, that, “You can’t step into the same river twice”. By this, he meant that permanence is an illusion and changes are inevitable. One of such changes, which has created buzz all over world is climate change. To understand the science behind climate change, the first step would be to know about the periodic changes in earth’s climate. Scientists devised innovative techniques to recover evidence from the distant past, first from deposits left on land, then from sea floor sediments, and one of the finest techniques of drilling deep into ice. Evidences from past climates help us to understand the evolution of the earth’s atmosphere, oceans, biosphere, and cryosphere. At the same time, paleo-climate studies help in quantification of properties of earth’s climate, including the forces that drive climate change and the sensitivity of the earth’s climate to those forces. When scientists investigate causes or complex processes in the present and future, they may find evidence in the past that helps them in mapping out the complexities (McMullen and Jabbour, 2009). The paleo-climatologists succeeded brilliantly and discovered strangely regular pattern of glacial cycles, which helps in prediction of future changes.

Abstract

The Indian Peninsula in general and its southern part in particular has been thought to be a stable shield area and hence inert to younger earth movements and seismicities. However, in addition to fast relapsing seismicities, the studies carried out by earlier workers during the past three decades indicate possible pulsatory tectonism, at least since the Jurassics. The present study is a newer attempt to identify, analyse, and spatially amalgamate a large number of anomalies visibly displayed by the tectonic, fluvial, coastal, and hydrological systems in remote sensing and ground based datasets/observations, and to finally paint a fair picture on the active tectonic scenario of South India. The study reveals that the phenomena, viz. extensive soil erosion, reservoir siltation, sediment dump into the ocean, preferential migration of rivers, restricted marine regression, shrinkage of back waters, withdrawal of creeks, fall of groundwater table, etc., indicate two E–W trending ongoing tectonic (Cymatogenic) archings along Mangalore–Chennai in the north and Cochin–Ramanathapuram in the south. Intervening these two arches, a cymatogenic deep along Ponnani–Palghat–Manamelkudi exhibiting phenomena opposite to the above is observed. In addition, the characteristic tectonic, geomorphic, and hydrological anomalies observed in 1B satellite FCC data, as well as in the field, indicate N–S trending extensional, NE–SW sinistral, and NW–SE dextral strike slip faults. These anomalies and the tectonic features deduced there upon, indicate that the southern part of the Indian Peninsula is tectonically active due to the northerly to north– north-easterly directed compressive force related to post collision tectonics. This active tectonic model visualized for South India gives a further clue that the whole Indian plate is whirling like a worm with alternate E–W arching and deepening, along with block and transform faulting from Cape Comorin in the south to the Himalayas in the north.

For this reason, geoscientists have not shown much interest in studying the Neo-active-seismotectonics of the southern part of the Indian Peninsula, mostly restricting themselves to the western (Kutch) and central (Son-Narmada) parts of India (Auden 1949, West 1962, Choubey 1970, Biswas and Deshpande 1973, Kailasam 1975, Ghosh 1976, Pal and Bhimashankaran 1976, Crawford 1978, Dessai and Peshwa 1978, Sharma 1978, Guha and Padale 1981, Kaila et al., 1981, 1985, Murty and Mishra 1981, Powar 1981, 1993, Bhagwandas and Patel 1984, Bakliwal and Ramasamy 1987, Merh 1987, Ravishankar 1987, Amalkar 1988, Ramasamy et al. 1991, Gupta 1992, Sareen et al. 1993, Ramasamy 1995a, 1998, and many others).

Raster transformations involve mathematical manipulation of raster layers to generate new raster images. These transformed raster images either contain the information of interest or highlight the features which are not discernible in the original image. Transformations are also performed to preserve the essential information in reduced number of dimensions or layers. In this chapter, we are going to discuss few most commonly used transformation tools listed below:

Pollution: Environmental pollution in general, may be described as the contamination of the environment with harmful wastes arising mainly from human activities. These activities release certain materials which produce pollution in the atmosphere water and soil. In simple words, environmental pollution may be defined as direct or indirect changes as a result of human activities, which adversely influence the biological and non-biological equilibrium of the environment.

ALLIC: soil family class term used in Oxisols as a calcareous and reaction class category. Soils placed in the allic class are acid and have low CEC with high amounts of KCl-extractable aluminum in a layer at least 30 cm thick within the control section. If used for agriculture, these Oxisols require large inputs of lime to displace the aluminum and raise pH.

8.1 General

Pyrolysis is a process that utilizes heat or fire to separate biomass, derived from the ancient Greek words “pyro” meaning fire, and “lysis” meaning separation. A thermochemical conversion process transforms biomass into a useful intermediate liquid product. This product can then be converted into a hydrocarbon biofuel, oxygenated fuel additive, or a petrochemical substitute. Pyrolysis shares similarities with other thermochemical processes such as cracking, carbonization, torrefaction, destructive distillation, dry distillation, and thermolysis. However, it is not related to gasification, which involves chemical reactions with a gasification medium.

7.1. Introduction

The integrated farming system (IFS) is becoming increasingly important for effective farm resource management in order to increase farm productivity, reduce environmental degradation, improve the quality of life for resource-poor farmers, and ensure sustainability. Integration happens when one production sub-system's outputs (typically by-products) are used as inputs in another within the farm unit (Radhammani et al., 2003; Lightfoot and Minnick, 1991). IFS are a mixed farming system made up of at least two distinct but logically linked components of crop and animal enterprises. The integrated farming system is effective in reducing risk, increasing productivity and revenues, and improving the use of organic waste and agricultural leftovers.

This chapter deals with the findings of the study along with the discussion based on the analysis. This study tried to represent its findings as per the objectives of the study. At the end of this chapter, interrelation has been made, an explanation has been tried to put out down and an attempt has been done to reveal the cause behind it. The main greenhouse gases (GHGs) that have caused the global climate change or global warming are carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O). CO₂ is the principal anthropogenic GHG that affects the earth’s radiative balance. It is the reference gas against which other GHGs are measured and therefore has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 1. CH₄ and N₂O have a GWP of 21 and 310, respectively. CO₂ is responsible for most of the enhanced greenhouse effect of more than 50%, CH₄ for about 10-15% and N₂O for about 8%. The global atmospheric concentrations of CO₂, CH₄ and N₂O have increased since 1750. While CO₂ increased from a pre-industrial value of 280 ppm to 379 ppm in 2005, CH₄ increased from 715 ppb to 1774 ppb and N₂O increased from 270 ppb to 319 ppb during the same period. Rich countries and large developing countries account for most of global CO₂ emissions (China 23.5%, USA 18.27%, India 5.83%, Russia 5.72%, Japan 4.04% and European Union 13.98%). A new climate agreement called ‘Warsaw International mechanisms (November 2013) on loss and damage’ agreed to help the poor countries to cope with loss and damage from heatwaves, droughts, floods, typhoons, desertification and rising sea levels. The Warsaw agreement also includes a set of decisions to help developing countries to reduce GHG emissions from deforestation and degradation of forests which is backed by pledges of US$280 million financing by the United States, Norway and the United Kingdom. Projections for global average temperature rise is in the range of 1.1-6.4°C; a doubling of CO₂ (from pre-industrial 280 ppm) and average sea level rise is in the range of 0.18-0.59 m (Meehel et al. 2007) and 0.5–2.4 m (Brown et al. 2013). Hot extremes, heat waves and heavy precipitation events will continue to become more frequent. Projected data show that there is an increasing global trend in the rise of average temperature in all countries, regions or sub-zones; a decreasing trend in average precipitation in most sub-tropical areas and an increasing trend of precipitation in most of the tropical and high latitudes.

Black pepper (Piper nigrum L.), famous as “Black Gold” and also known the “King of Spices” is the most important agricultural commodities of commerce and trade in India. It is the most important, most popular and most widely used spice in the World. Of the total spices traded internationally, black pepper accounts for 34 per cent. South West India is the traditional home of this important spice, particularly the Malabar Coast. Black pepper is also grown in tropical zones such as the Asia Pacific Region, mainly India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, China, Vietnam and Cambodia. Outside the Asia Pacific region, the crop is distributed in Brazil, Mexico, Guatemala, etc., totaling about 26 countries. It is grown successfully between 20°N and 20°S latitude and from mean sea level to 1500 meters above sea level. World’s black pepper production varies in the range of 2.7 to 3.35 tonnes annually.

Kerala, popularly known as the God’s own country, is situated at the southern tip of India between latitude range 8°15‘ N to 12°50’ N and 74°50’ E to 77°30’ E longitude. The State is graced with 44 rivers and numbers of streams and has rich biodiversity and tropical rain forests spread in 13 agro-ecological zones under humid tropics. Kerala is the Gateway of monsoon in India. Though Kerala is identified as Plantation State, the major staple food is rice. The annual rainfall in Kerala is about 2.7 times the national average. More or less assured amount of rainfall is being received in almost every year over the State, though inter-annual variability is felt more in recent decades. Uncertainties in rainfall are also felt much in the recent decades. Droughts during summer and floods during rainy season are frequent. Natural disasters like landslides/mud slips during rainy season are common across the mid and high lands of Kerala as the intensity of rainfall is high. Atmospheric temperature across the State is increasing. 1983 was a disastrous drought year in Kerala. The severe summer affected the State’s plantation crops economy to a considerable extent. Insignificant rainfall led to the severe summer drought during 1982–83.

19. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF MINERALS

Def : The minerals are naturally occurring solid bodies having definite chemical composition and certain atomic arrangement, and are formed by inorganic processes in the nature.

All the minerals possess certain physical properties which are considered as follows.

1.Characters depending upon light such as colour streak, luster, transparency, translucency, phosphorescence and fluorescence.

2.Characters depending upon certain senses such as taste, odour and feel.

3.Characters depending upon the atomic structure and state of aggregation such as form, hardness, tenacity, fracture, cleavage and surface tension effects.

On the basis of these three characteristics, the minerals are identified and distinguished.

8.1 Economic Geology and Ore Mineralogy

8.1.1 Economic geology

Economic Geology deals with the comprehensive study of mineral deposits including their processes of formation and uses. By applying the principles of geology, a mining engineer is able to exploit such deposits profitably for the use of Man.

8.1.2 Ore mineral

An ore is a term applied usually to that part of a metalliferous mineral deposit that can be utilized profitably as a source of one-or-more metals, this term now is widely used for the usable part of many non-metallic (non-metalliferous mineral) deposits, like barite, fluorite, sulphur, etc.

8.1.3 Gangue mineral

An ore is usually a mixture of one or more usable minerals (ore minerals) and one or more unusable minerals (gangue minerals). The usual gangue minerals are quartz and other forms of silica, calcite, dolomite, siderite, barite, feldspars, garnet, chlorite, kaolin, fluorite, apatite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, and sometimes the gangue material is the country rock or host rock itself in which the ore minerals occur. Sometimes, the gangue minerals may also be utilized as by-products of the ore deposit. The nature and proportion of the gangue influence the economic value of an ore to a great extent.

Maps make it easier to interpret and communicate the results of any GIS analysis. R has a large number of packages for making thematic maps. Static mapping is straightforward with plot()methods provided by core spatial packages sf and raster. The use of plot() function have been discussed in the previous chapters. Another package for mapping isspwithspplot() having enough options for producing good quality thematic maps.It is also possible to create advanced maps using ggplot2. This chapter discusses, separately, preparing thematic maps from vectors and rasters with the above mentioned packages. A dedicated map-making package tmaphas been given special focus in this chapter.

Damage to arable land tends to attract most attention but degradation of non-arable land can also have serious effects, whether economic, or social, or on the food supply. In dry seasons, loss of grazing capacity is a common and serious problem, forest land may suffer through over-exploitation, roads can cause much damage particularly on steep land. In this chapter we will look at the more important erosion problems on non-arable land.

13.1 Erosion on grazing land

On well-managed high-yielding pasture it is unlikely that there will be any erosion, for the ground will have a good uniform cover. But land which is not arable because it is too poor, too infertile, too stony, or too arid, and is only described as grazing land because it is unfit for more intensive use, is a very different matter. Again, erosion control can be directly and precisely equated to improved management - anything leading to a better water balance and a better ground cover will lead to reduced erosion.
