15.1 Introduction

A tsunami is a series of waves created when a body of water, such as an ocean, is rapidly displaced. Earthquakes, mass movements above or below water, volcanic eruptions and other underwater explosions, landslides, large meteorite impacts and testing with nuclear weapons at sea all have the potential to generate a tsunami. The effects of a tsunami can range from unnoticeable to devastating. The term tsunami comes from the Japanese words meaning harbor (“tsu”,) and wave (“nami”,). The term is created by fishermen who returned to port to find the area surrounding their harbor devastated, although they had not been aware of any wave in the open water. Tsunamis are common throughout Japanese history; approximately 195 events in Japan have been recorded.

A tsunami has a much smaller amplitude offshore, and a very long wavelength (often hundreds of kilometers long), which is why they generally pass unnoticed at sea, forming only a passing “hump” in the ocean (Fig. 15.1). Tsunami have been historically referred to as tidal waves because as they approach land, they take on the characteristics of a violent onrushing tide rather than the sort of cresting waves that are formed by wind action upon the ocean (Iwan, W.D., 2006).

Abstract

During natural disasters, mostly panic and curiosity lead to greater causalities. But the tsunami is such a disaster which no one have witnessed during their life time nor heard of from their ancestors. On 26, December 2004, tsunami has struck all of a sudden many South Asian coasts including the east coast of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh causing greater devastation and causalities. This historical event has taught us many lessons and the paper deals with some aspects related to tsunami from the citizen’s view point.

INTRODUCTION

The tsunami that ravaged the coasts of South India had left tell tale signs that affirm the need for early warning systems as well as well-planned mitigation measures for the benefit of the affected. Over the last 12 months, since the tsunami struck the east coast of India on 26 Dec. 2004, numerous seminars, discussions, programmes and project proposals have been deliberated on various aspects that deserve attention. Government agencies, self-help groups and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have done commendable post-tsunami work. All sections of the society have responded both emotionally and rationally to the event in an unprecedented manner. In retrospect, to the informed citizen – one who has heard about the event, read about it and discussed it with others, though not have had the ‘experience’ of the natural disaster by himself / herself - what do all these mean ? the tragedy and its aftermath. This paper documents the issues that a citizen would like to ponder over so as to understand the various dimensions of the post-tsunami activities and draw a few lessons that the tragedy had taught us. The major issues pertain to (i) the mechanisms (ii) the coastal vulnerability and the need for assessment (iii) mitigation strategies (iv) media exposition (v) communication networking and (vi) educational facilitation.

The phenomenon we call tsunami is a series of large waves of extremely long wavelength and period usually generated by a violent, impulsive undersea disturbance or activity near the coast or in the ocean. A tsunami is a very long-wavelength wave of water that is generated by sudden displacement of the seafloor or disruption of any body of standing water.  Tsunami are sometimes called “seismic sea waves”, although, as we will see, they can be generated by mechanisms other than earthquakes.  Tsunami have also been called “tidal waves”, but this term should not be used because they are not in any way related to the tides of the Earth.  Because tsunami occur suddenly, often without warning, they are extremely dangerous to coastal communities.

Introduction

Indian arid zone is one of the largest subtropical deserts of the world of which 20% is arid and rest is semi-arid. Hot arid zone is spread over 31.7 million ha area and mainly confined in the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana. The major part of hot arid region of the country lies in western Rajasthan (19.62 mha) followed by North-western Gujarat (2.16 mha). It is characterized by high aridity index, extremes of temperature low and variable precipitation, very high wind velocity and dust storm, high soil pH, high infiltration rate, very limited availability of groundwater and saline ground irrigation water (More, 2010). Under such harsh climatic conditions cultivation of vegetable crops in open condition results in very low and poor-quality yield which fetches less return per unit area. By creating the suitable micro-climate for plant growth round the year cultivation of vegetables can be done under adverse climatic conditions. It is possible through protected cultivation which has tremendous scope in peri-urban areas of the country (Singh and Sirohi, 2004). It is the best way to increase the productivity and quality of vegetables, especially cucurbits. India is the second largest producer of vegetables in the world next only to China. Presently India has 178.17 million tonnes of total vegetable production, but the productivity and quality of most of the vegetable crops is very poor (17.40 t/ ha) due to several biotic and abiotic stresses due to open field cultivation. In Rajasthan, the total production of vegetables is very less i.e. only 1.81 million tonnes from an area of 0.17 m ha with a productivity of 10.66 t/ ha.

The decreased ability of water to transmit light which is caused by suspended particulate matter ranging in size from colloidal to coarse dispersions is refers as turbidity.
Principle
Turbidity is measured by its effect on the transmission of light, which is termed as Turbidimetry or by its effect on the scattering of light, which is termed as Nephelometry. Turbidimeter can be used for sample with moderate turbidity and Nephelometer for samples with low Turbidity. Higher the intensity of scattered light higher the turbidity.

In this chapter, an attempt is made to emphasize the fact that while no country in the World is safe from geohazards, a proper understanding on their causes, ways to mitigate them and surviving techniques would help reduce the life and property loss. Each geohazard has its own characteristic way of potential impact and hence classifying vulnerability of different regions and creating awareness on potential impact is essential. In addition to providing basic information on geohazards, this chapter presents a conceptual model on hazard mitigation, rescue and relief operations.

INTRODUCTION

Every year, thousands of people are killed by volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, landslides and floods. These natural causes damage human settlements and infrastructures (GOI, 2004) inflicting life and economic loss. As human population increases, habitation on hazardous and or vulnerable land becomes more common and the risks posed by these hazards increase. The need to observe their behavior, understand them better and mitigate their effects become ever more urgent (IGOS, 2003). Decades of research may have contributed towards betterment of our understanding on the processes of geohazard formation but still a long way has to be covered to develop better mitigation procedures.

Abstract

The UAE Space Reconnaissance Center (SRC) is accounted as a major national and regional source of up-to-date geospatial data, with direct reception of IKONOS, IRS and KOMPSAT satellite imagery as well as access to some other satellite and aerial imagery resources; an activity which covers the whole Middle East region. The main concern in monitoring the environment of UAE and surrounding countries is the desertification process, the monitoring of which requires careful watching of the sand movement and some other relevant features.

This paper throws light on the role of various types of satellite images in monitoring desertification, by utilization of IKONOS, IRS Pan and Landsat TM images covering part of Liwa and Alain areas, representing the two main dune regimes; Liwa and Manadir, which constitutes the northeastern edge of the Empty Quarter sand sea.

The availability of high resolution images makes it possible to detect the yearly or even seasonal sand movements, being controlled by the prevailing wind conditions and distance from the main sand source. The results clarify that movements of up to 25m was encountered at some small sand dunes and about 10m for larger sand dunes, towards the SSE and SSW in Liwa area. In Rimah area a movement of up to 30m was noticed at a small sand dune towards the ENE and about 12m shift in the hinge of a larger sand dune towards the NW. Temporary or permanent ? movement of thin sand sheets can reach 100’s of meters, was easily detected on Landsat images; ~ 25km NE of Alain city. The 5m panchromatic images, on the other hand, helped in tracing sand movements measured in few 10’s of meters, and interpretability of such images was enhanced by merging them with Landsat imagery.

Abstract

Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) consisting of water soluble organic molecules and by products of organic decomposition and chemical degradation processes, constitutes a critical link in carbon and nutrient cycles. The quality, or chemical and physical character, of DOC affects the degree to which it is transformed by biological and chemical processes. The significance of DOC was studied in layered coastal aquifers of the Pondicherry region during four different seasons. Pondicherry region has varied geological set up ranging from Cretaceous to Recent formations. A total of 52 groundwater samples were collected from various aquifers like Alluvium, Tertiary(Upper Cuddalore, Lower Cuddalore) and Cretaceous for two different seasons of pre- monsoon(PRM), and post-monsoon (POM). The samples were analyzed for major ions and DOC. The range of DOC in the study area is 0-14 mg/l. Very high DOC concentrations were measured during PRM in the samples from Alluvium and Lower Cuddalore Formation. The samples of these formations were compared with pH, Ionic strength, log pCO₂ and carbonate minerals concentration. The alluvial aquifer shows that pH governed dissolution along the coastal tracts and in Upper Cuddalore formation it’s based on interaction between aquifer matrix and groundwater.

Abstract

A study on colloids in groundwater and its relationship with the geochemical parameters is reasonably essential because of its facilitating nature to transport radionuclides in groundwater. Colloid sampling has been carried out in the coastal aquifers of southeast coast of India. Two different bore wells were selected based on the distance from the coast to collect groundwater samples. On the basis of the result achieved from this study, a reliable representation is emerging. The values of pH and EC are governed by the different size fraction of colloids. In this study, the relation between different size fractions of groundwater colloids and its pH, TDS and EC were carried out. These parameters were analyzed in the lab and its influence with four fractions of colloid like 1.2, 0.8, 0.45 and 0.22 µm have been discovered by smooth scatter plot. The accumulation of particles weighting by normal weighing instrument. There is an higher accumulation of particles found in Kalpakkam than Anupuram in all the size fractions. For separation of particles high frequency pressure was used by ultrasonic cleaner had been carried out. This method is very simple and more reasonable than any other methods.

Abstract

The development and management of fresh groundwater resources in coastal aquifers are seriously constrained by the impact of seawater intrusion. The coastal aquifers are fragile and this situation becomes more intense like that of the coastal Cuddalore region. The geochemical signature of groundwater of Cuddalore coast was studied for Pre Monsoon, Southwest, North east and Post Monsoon seasons by collecting total of 64 groundwater samples in each season. The collected samples from were analysed for physical parameters, such as electrical conductivity (EC), pH and major ion concentrations, such as Ca, Mg, Na, K, Cl, HCO₃, PO₄ and SO₄. Interpretation of analytical data shows the predominance of  Na–Cl type   in PRM and Ca- Mg-Cl type  is the dominant facies during POM. The Chaddas evaluation diagram shows that the hydrogeochemical evaluation plot for PRM samples fall in  Na-Cl type. The ratios of Na/Cl and Cl/HCO₃ is also enumerated the fact that the most of the samples from PRM and few samples from other seasons also indicates dominance of salt water intrusion.

Rainfall in India, is a phenomenon that is not just a meteorological event but the very lifeline of the subcontinent, profoundly shaping its landscapes, agriculture, and, most importantly for our study, its diverse aquatic ecosystems and the fisheries they support. India experiences a unique and dominant rainfall regime driven primarily by the monsoon, a seasonal reversal of wind patterns. The arrival, intensity, duration, and spatial distribution of this rainfall have farreaching consequences for the availability of freshwater, the health of rivers, lakes, and wetlands, and the productivity of coastal and marine environments. For aspiring fisheries professionals in India, a thorough understanding of the patterns and vagaries of Indian rainfall is indispensable.
Consider the sheer diversity of aquatic habitats across India, from the snowfed rivers of the Himalayas to the monsoonal wetlands of the Gangetic plains, the brackish backwaters of Kerala, and the vast coastline. The characteristics and productivity of each of these systems are intricately linked to the patterns of rainfall they receive. The monsoon replenishes rivers and groundwater, sustains agricultural practices that can impact water quality, influences the nutrient flow into coastal waters, and can even trigger crucial life cycle events for many aquatic species (Fig. 7.1).

Unsupervised classification is the technique of classification of raster data in which no prior information is provided by the user. Raster data is classified based on their spectral characteristics such that the pixels having similar spectral properties in the multispectral feature space are grouped together in one class. Unsupervised classification is mainly performed by clustering algorithms. The purpose of these algorithms is to minimize within cluster variability and maximize between clusters variability. The user must interpret and label the classes after performing unsupervised classification. This method of classification requires minimum data which makes it easy and quick, but user has toput efforts in identification of the classes. This method could be useful when user doesn’t have any prior knowledge about the study area. This method removes subjectivity and enables us to get the unique classes which might be unrecognized by the user. K-means is the most commonly used method for performing unsupervised classification. In this chapter, we have discussed K- means, CLARA and unsupervised random forest method for classification of raster data in R.

ABSTRACT

The multi-sensor airborne geophysical survey was carried out over Nalgonda district, Andhra Pradesh, during the field season 2002-03, with an objective to locate potential areas for mineral exploration. The area comprises older metamorphic rocks of Peninsular Gneissic Complex of Archaeanage represented by gneisses, granite, amphibolite and banded magnetite quartzite. Leucocratic intrusive granite, extending over a length of about 40 km around Suryapet in NNW-SSE direction exhibits intense fracturing. Two sets of vertical to sub-vertical fractures have been noted in granite. Yellow stains observed in granite near fracture planes reveal the presence of secondary radioactive mineral encrustation. The ground magnetic and spectrometric observations indicated that the uranium mineralization is confined to these fractures in granite. Petrographic, ore-microscopic and scanning electron microscopic studies revealed evidences of metamict alteration surrounding monazite/apatite inclusions within biotite, and magnetite grains in granite. These studies also indicated evidences of discrete grains of uraninite / coffenite / pitchblende (containing Thand Ce). Chemical analysis of the rock samples (by NAA) collected from anomalous zone reveal high uranium concentration of the order of 1200 ppm, marked by high values of total Rare Earth Element concentration (800 ppm).

The leucogranites are characterized by high LREE and a negative Eu anomaly suggesting plagioclase fractionation. An ultramafic enclave near village Kutubsahipur shows highest concentration of both uranium (1240 ppm) and REE (890 ppm) analyzed by BARC and NAA Lab, GSI.

When the taps run dry or restrictions tighten, the repercussions extend far beyond parched lawns and wilted gardens, impacting public health, economic stability, and the very fabric of urban life This chapter serves as an entry point into the critical field of urban drought management. We will delve into the unique characteristics that distinguish urban droughts from their rural counterparts, highlighting the interconnectedness of water systems and the amplified socioeconomic consequences within city limits. We will explore the increasing frequency and intensity of these events, driven by both natural climate variability and

Normally we associate our agriculture and food supply with farms and villages. The new trends of greener cities and urban and peri urban horticulture (UPH) are emerging very fast. Towns and cities in the world’s developing countries are growing at great speed. Ten years ago, an estimated 40 percent of the developing world’s population or 2 billion people lived in urban areas. Since then, their numbers have expanded twice as fast as total population growth, to more than 2.5 billion. By 2025, more than half the developing world’s population of 3.5 billion will be urban. Again most of the world’s fastest growing cities are in Asia and Africa with young population.

Trees are major capital assets in cities Just as streets, sidewalks, public buildings and recreational facilities are a part of a community’s infrastructure, so are publicly owned trees. Trees — and, collectively, the urban forest — are important assets that require care and maintenance the same as other public property. Trees are on the job 24 hours every day working for all of us to improve our environment and quality of life. Urban forest provides many environmental benefits to our community. Aside from the obvious aesthetic benefits, trees within our urban forest improve our air, protect our water, save energy, and improve economic sustainability.

In other words, since most trees have been planted much of the tree cover is in urban areas as opposed to “natural lands”. Therefore, estimated pollutant uptake rates are higher for residential compared to natural or unmanaged lands. Possible management implications of these estimates are that air pollutant uptake benefits from tree planting may be optimized by planting in areas where air pollutant concentrations are elevated and where relatively high planting densities can be achieved thereby enhancing the health of urban dwellers.

Urban climatology deals with changes in climatic conditions that prevail in large cities and towns that differ from the surroundings. Urban climates are influenced by large built-up areas, increased human activities and dense population and are found to experience differences in temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction and rainfall compared to adjoining areas. Tall buildings, paved streets and parking lots affect radiation balance, wind flow and run-off. The atmosphere in urban areas will have higher concentration of pollutants like carbon monoxide, oxides of sulphur and nitrogen, hydrocarbons, oxidants and particulate matters. Heavy concentration of air pollutants will have considerable impact on temperature, humidity, wind, and precipitation in and around urban areas. Heavy concentrations of air pollutants for longer periods or several days may lead to temperature inversions. The temperature inversions prevent convection and vertical movement of air. The centre of urban area will be warmer by even 5 to 6°C compared to adjoining areas. During summer months, the concrete structures absorb, store and reradiate more solar energy per unit area compared to vegetation. During nights, radiative losses from urban buildings and roads keep city warmer than the rural areas. The average relative humidity in cities is usually lower due to lack of evapotranspiration from vegetation. The mean wind speed will be 20 to 30 percent due to increased frictional drag induced by built up urban terrain (Fig.17.1).
The urban areas influence precipitation patterns in its vicinity as turbulence and convection get modified by city environment.
17.1. Urban Heat Islands
An urban heat island is a type of microclimate that is created when an urban area becomes warmer than the surrounding area. It is common in large cities (Fig.17.2). The characteristic features of urban heat islands are as follows:
• Increased temperature
• Large temperature difference by even 5 to 6°C
• The south facing buildings receive more sunlight in the northern hemisphere
• The tall buildings in urban areas create streets that act like deep valley
• The albedo will be very less. The darker areas lead to more absorption of incoming solar radiation and emit more of long wave radiation
• The concrete structures are built with materials having low specific heat. Therefore, concrete structures warm up faster and lead to quick rise in temperature
• The higher density of buildings reduces wind speeds.

Abstract

The desert environment is one of the most challenging environments for human habitation. Inhabitants have to deal with climatic factors such as high temperature, sandstorms, flash floods and lack of water due to low rainfall. The people of Saudi Arabian desert had developed various traditional adaptation approaches such as living in tents, wearing head dresses, settling close to source of water, using camel for transportation, irrigation farming and traditional land management (hema). In recent times, modern technologies for air conditioning, transportation and housing have replaced the traditional adaptation methods especially in the cities. The modern technologies have reduced the challenges faced by the traditional society but has thrown up new challenges to sustainability. The new issues include urban flooding, depletion of underground water, high energy demand and consumption and loss of natural habitat to urbanization. This chapter reviews the traditional and the modern adaptation techniques in Saudi Arabia especially in the urban areas. It examines the implication of the changes for urban sustainability and explores different approaches for reducing the negative impacts. The chapter also dwells on the role of geospatial techniques in adapting to the desert environment.

Introduction

In addition to role of iron oxidation in commercial point of view there are certain implication of iron oxidation on environment. Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) is one of the example of environmental pollution. Coal and various metal ores are enclosed in geological formation of reduced nature. Coal, is often associated with pyrite (FeS₂).When mining activities expose this material to atmospheric oxygen, a combination of auto oxidation and microbial iron and sulfur oxidation produces large amounts of acids. The iron-rich acidic mine drainage kills aquatic life and renders the contaminated stream unsuitable as a water supply or for recreational use.

Abstract

Aquifers are usually composed of permeable layers that can ways a considerable amount of groundwater. Usually, aquifer units are correlated through the concept of lithostratigraphy. For low-permeable aquifers, it is difficult to define the spatial distribution of hydrogeological units, and this study attempts to use geochemical methods to identify the groundwater flow paths in an area of Southeast coast of Tamil Nadu, India. Multiple geochemical analyses, including groundwater chemistry; stable isotopic compositions of d¹⁸O and 8D contents were performed.  Spatial distribution of d¹⁸O, dD, Cl-/HCO-₃ show that northeastern part of the study area seriously affected by seawater intrusion. The highly permeable aquifers at the east coastal region are characterized by high hydraulic conductivity as compared with other regions of the study area. Hydrogeochemical characteristics based on bivariate diagrams of major and minor ions show that changes in the chemical composition of groundwater are mainly controlled by the salinization process followed by cation-exchange reactions.

Abstract

The weather or climate is a natural resource and is an important basic input in agricultural planning and strategies. Every plant process, related with growth, development and yield of a crop and each of inseason and off-season farm operations (according to World Meteorological Organization) is more than 10 per cent and can reach up to 50 per cent in smaller areas and not a surprise even if it reaches to 100 per cent on micro scale. Amongst the various weather elements, temperatures, radiation and rainfall play major role in deciding the crop growth and yield levels. Precipitation is one of the important weather factors being responsible for atmospheric and soil moisture and therefore has more agricultural importance, especially in rainfed agriculture.

1.0 Introduction

India receives more than 70 per cent of its annual rainfall during South West monsoon season. Indian summer monsoon rainfall shows large intra - seasonal and intra-annual variability (Parthasarathy, 1960; Alexander et al., 1978; Mooley and Parthasarathy, 1984) and also changes in space and time, intensity and distribution. Borgaonkar and Pant (2001) have reported that Indian monsoon rainfall has shown trend less nature since 17^th century based on proxy data with large inter-annual fluctuations. IPCC (2001) has reported increase in rainfall over tropical and higher latitudes and decrease in rainfall over subtropics and mid latitudes.

16.1 Introduction

The ancient Greek philosopher ‘Heraclitus’ said, that, “You can’t step into the same river twice”. By this, he meant that permanence is an illusion and changes are inevitable. One of such changes, which has created buzz all over world is climate change. To understand the science behind climate change, the first step would be to know about the periodic changes in earth’s climate. Scientists devised innovative techniques to recover evidence from the distant past, first from deposits left on land, then from sea floor sediments, and one of the finest techniques of drilling deep into ice. Evidences from past climates help us to understand the evolution of the earth’s atmosphere, oceans, biosphere, and cryosphere. At the same time, paleo-climate studies help in quantification of properties of earth’s climate, including the forces that drive climate change and the sensitivity of the earth’s climate to those forces. When scientists investigate causes or complex processes in the present and future, they may find evidence in the past that helps them in mapping out the complexities (McMullen and Jabbour, 2009). The paleo-climatologists succeeded brilliantly and discovered strangely regular pattern of glacial cycles, which helps in prediction of future changes.

Introduction

Global population growth has led to an increase in demand for energy, food, and other essentials, resulting in an increase in agricultural land. Poor farming techniques, urbanization, and a lack of soil management measures have negative consequences for agricultural soils, such as reduced soil fertility, migration of soil organisms, and loss of soil microbiota and ultimately loss of soil health(Mehmood et al., 2020; Omotayo and Babalola, 2021; Syed et al., 2022). In addition, fertilizers used in agriculture have an impact on soil quality and health. Soil fertility is defined as the ability of a soil to meet the physico-chemical and biological requirements of a plant for growth, reproduction and quality, taking into account plant and soil type, land use and climatic conditions (Abbott and Murphy, 2007; Tyagi et al., 2019).

14.1.2 How it Works
• Temperature Rise: When the temperature rises, the alcohol in the bulb expands, pushing the mercury up the arm on the maximum temperature side. The mercury pushes the index upwards, and this index stays at the highest point reached as the mercury falls back down with decreasing temperature.
• Temperature Fall: When the temperature falls, the alcohol in the bulb contracts, pulling the mercury down on the minimum temperature side (and thus up on the maximum side). The mercury on the minimum side pushes its index upwards. As the temperature rises again, the mercury retreats, leaving the minimum temperature index at the lowest point reached.
• Reading the Thermometer: To read the maximum temperature, you look at the lower end of the index on the maximum temperature scale. To read the minimum temperature, you look at the lower end of the index on the minimum temperature scale. The current temperature can be read from either side by noting the position of the top of the mercury column.
• Resetting the Thermometer: After taking the readings, the indices need to be reset. This is typically done using a small magnet to pull the steel indices back down to the current level of the mercury.

Abstract

Climate change is today’s major concern throughout the world. All sectors have been influenced with the impact of climate change. Similarly, agriculture sector has also been affected with the worse climatic changes. All components of agricultural production system like water, soil, vegetation, organism and microorganism etc. affected greatly due to climatic abruptions. And thus, the productivity is hampering day by day. Today, we requires to predict the trend of changes in climatic parameters like maximum and minimum temperature, humidity, wind speed, sunshine hours etc, to project future change in these climatic parameters, to assess the effect of theses climatic parameters on agricultural components like water resources, soil, vegetation, organism and microorganism and, also to find the adaptation and mitigation strategies.  All these works have beenmainly done by manual methods earlier. Developed country like USA, Japan, UK etc adopted the computer modelling to climate change research. Computer modelling and software assistance have been adopted slowly in developed countries. Since, climatic changes requires processing of very large number of data, they needs computer and software assistance. Without computer assistance climate change research seems to be impossible.

8.1 Introduction

The concept of social justice led to a raise the standard of living of the masses. This is only possible by meeting the energy needs of industry, agriculture, transport and domestic use. The energy of demand has been increasing tremendously all over the world science mid – nineteenth century due to rise in industrial and agricultural activities and was being met to a great extent by fossil fuels.

Three factors led the mankind to look for alternative renewable sources of energy like solar, wind, hydro etc. (1) there is a danger that the rate at which the non renewable sources of energies are being consumed presently may lead to a global shortage in the near future. This has already happen in case of oil. (2) Use of fossil fuel involves emission of toxic gases polluting the environment causing health hazards of living being. and (3) the demand and supply gas of energy is continuously widening, thus necessitating to exploit renewable sources of energy.

Out of various renewable energy sources, solar energy has been a promising one and lot of development has been taken in its technology for various uses. The numbers of technology engaged in developing solar energy for meaningful use are aiming to achieve the following objectives-

Introduction
Glycerol, a colourless and odourless sweet viscous liquid, is a prominent member of the polyol family—compounds distinguished by their multiple alcohol groups. Chemically known as 1, 3-propanetriol and commonly referred to as glycerine, it contains three hydroxyl (-OH) groups, which contribute to its hygroscopic nature and chemical versatility. As an essential component of lipids, glycerol forms the structural backbone of fats and oils, underscoring its biological and chemical significance. Over the years, glycerol has transitioned from being a laboratory curiosity to becoming a cornerstone of modern industrial processes, thanks to its versatility and renewable sourcing (Zhu et al., 2024).
Modern Applications and Industrial Importance of Glycerol
1. Chemical Industry: As a versatile platform chemical glycerol supports the creation of acrolein, propylene glycol and polyhydroxyalkanoates derivatives. Catalytic transformations allow glycerol to produce glycerol carbonate which finds application in lubricants, solvents and polymer synthesis research (Aranda et al., 2009). Glycerol demonstrates essential functionality in the creation of hydrogen and syngas which results in more eco-friendly manufacturing methods.
2. Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics: The humectant and lubricant properties of glycerol make it essential for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics where it maintains moisture in cough syrups, lozenges, and skin creams while improving texture. The medical derivative glycerol trinitrate provides essential treatment for angina pectoris which results in substantial therapeutic advantages (Binod et al., 2011).
3. Food Industry: Glycerol functions as a humectant and preservative, maintaining moisture in products like dried fruits, confectioneries, and beverages. In formulations free of sugar, it also serves as a sweetener (Awogbemi and Von Kallon, 2022).
4. Animal Feed: A economical energy source for cattle, crude glycerol, a biodiesel byproduct, helps sustainable agricultural methods (Mekunye and Makinde, 2024).
5. Energy and Environmental Sustainability: Glycerol is used in biogas development to improve methane yields and helps the development of bio refineries for converting waste glycerol into biofuels, lipids, and other sustainable chemicals (Peng et al., 2023).
6. Other Applications: Glycerol finds usage as a concrete addition for enhanced durability and in antifreeze compositions in the building and automobile industries. In printing, paper manufacture, and microbial fermentation techniques, it also finds roles as a plasticiser, lubricant, and carbon source (Solowski et al., 2020).

7.1 Introduction
Valorization in simple terms means to increase the value of a product, in economics it is usually through government and administrative actions. In the concept of waste management, it is defined as the process of reutilizing or making a new product of value from waste sources. Several kinds of wastes can be transformed into materials and energy of value, one such example is agricultural wastes. These agricultural wastes are eligible to be a base for manufacturing refined commodity (Capanoglu, Nemli and Tomas-Barberan, 2022) such as chemicals, adsorbents, pharmaceutical products, acids, chitosan, certain type of wax esters, pigments etc. or can be used in several industrial or domestic processes as an energy source, most commonly the production of bioethanol. Valorization greatly contributes to circular economy as materials are continuously renewed and reused, minimizing the need for virgin resources. By transforming agricultural wastes into value – added products, valorization helps to close the loop, ensuring that each by – product is put to use in an efficient, affordable and green way, thereby reducing the dependance on conventional waste management techniques such as landfills and incineration. Moreover, valorization has other benefits, including improved public health, development of newer industries in the material recovery and processing and waste management sector. It can also bring about social awareness about sustainable practices, fostering responsible consumption and waste disposal behaviors.
7.2 Types of Agricultural Wastes
Generally, agricultural wastes are organic. The most common types of agricultural wastes are biomass from rotten produce, crops, livestock carcasses, dead leaves, droppings from livestock and straws. These organic wastes have vast potential in being converted to value – added products through various methods without much additional treatment. Inorganic wastes such as heavy metals like Pb, Cu, Hg and Ba are also found in agricultural runoff containing pesticides, paints etc. Figure 7.1 (Omojola Awogbemi et al. 2022) provides various examples of agricultural wastes that are commonly used in the production of materials and energy.

Granite in the present day context is popularly known as the principal raw material in construction industry and also known for its value addition product as Dimension Stone in the global market. India is in pride possession of much sought granite varieties of the world. No doubt the demand for such granite varieties is quite high both for local and export markets but in reality the failure rate of granite quarries is also high, The technical reasons attributed for such failures being lack of application of proper scientific skill both in selection and mining ofgranite deposits. The past experience in the fieldof granite exploitation has thought us a lesson for application of geological knowledge in selection of right deposits and in adopting the right techniques. The selection criteria for construction purpose and for export market though looks simple, is more complicated in the case of dimension stone granite deposits, the reasons being the requirement of thorough knowledge in petrography,structure,geotechnical characters of the deposit. Considering the importance of the scientific knowledge, the present paper focuses on the various parameters for valuation of granite deposits. In other words, it emphasizes on arriving at a logical conclusion by applying the scientific knowledge in successful exploitation of the much valued granite deposits.

14.1 What is Education

Education is a systematic attempt towards human learning. All learning is subjective and self related. It is neither literacy nor information. Knowledge can never be learned. Knowledge is the fruit of experience and experience is the sensation of the individual. Individual experience is the internal function and is the function of awareness and understanding. And, one of the processes of knowledge and raising awareness is to be able to identify and clarify our values. Now values in education are essential to help each one of us directly so that we may order our relationships to the environment that lies outside us. Once we are clear about values, we shall be better able to shift and control information of the natural world, make wise choices and decisions, and be creative in our mental processes.

Introduction

Soil is a dynamic natural body, characterized by high degree of spatial variability due to combined effect of physical, chemical or biological processes that operate with different intensities at different scales (Goovaerts 1998). Reports have shown that there is large variability in soil properties, crop yield, disease, weed etc., not only in large-sized fields (Godwin and Miller 2003,Vrindts et al. 2005), but also in small-sized fields (Bhattacharya et al. 2008). Therefore, knowledge of hydro-physical properties of soils is crucial for management practices for all kinds of agricultural practices for efficient utilization of input resources. Plant growth and development is highly related to soil hydro-physical properties, which not only depend on soil intrinsic textural and chemical characteristics (Hamza and Anderson 2005) but also on soil management.

Soil physical properties which change with the variation in soil structure include bulk density, total porosity, pore geometry (size distribution, shape, continuity and tortuosity), penetration resistance and aggregate stability, consequently affecting soil hydraulic properties such as water retention characteristics, plant available water capacity, infiltration capacity and saturated hydraulic conductivity. These soil properties are dependent on seasonal climatic conditions, management practices, crop development and biological activity (Reynolds et al. 2007). The hydro-physical properties of soils, i.e., water retention and water permeability in both saturated and unsaturated zones not only shape soil water balance but also decide the conditions for plant growth, development and yield. They also determine water availability for the plant root system and the transfer of water with chemical compounds dissolved in it into deeper layers.

Abstract

Ten genotypes of Cenchrus ciliaris L. were evaluated for seed yield and its components under arid environment prevailing at Jodhpur. The genotypes were grown (using seeds) during July 2010 and three cuts of fodder were taken up to November, thereafter allowed to produce seeds. Fodder of re-growth was finally harvested in June 2011 after seed collection. Analysis of variance showed significant variation among the genotypes for all the characters studied, viz.

Vegetables are important constituents of Indian agriculture and play important role in nutritional security due to their short duration, high yield, nutritional richness, economic viability and ability to generate on-farm and off-farm employment. Vegetables form an integral part of staple diet in India where 42% population is vegetarian and vegetables are sources of daily requirement of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Our country is blessed with diverse agro-climates with distinct seasons, making it possible to grow wide array of vegetables. The role of vegetable cultivation in the country’s nutritional security, poverty alleviation and employment generation is becoming increasingly important. There are vast opportunities available in export sector, which need to be harnessed to their fullest ability. Vegetable crops have high yield potential and calories per unit area compared to that of cereals in the shortest time. Additionally, vegetable cultivation creates employment in rural sector, as it is a labour intensive farming practice. Vegetables are good source of ready farm income, besides being rich in health building substances, especially protective nutrients (Kalia, 2010 and Meena et al., 2016).

Vector data analysis is performed to convert raw input vector data to output that provides new and meaningful information which ultimately supports decision making and disclose hidden patterns. There are various techniques to analyse vector data like buffering, intersect, union, and so on. Some of the most commonly used techniques with their R-code examples are explained in this chapter.

First of all, you need to import all the packages which are required for performing this exercise. These packages include rgdal and sp for importing and re-projecting vector data as well as raster and rgeos for performing vector analysis operations.

Vector data consists of points, lines and polygons with x, y coordinates known as vertices representing the geographic location i.e. latitude and longitude. Vector data depicts the shape of the spatial feature. Points consist of single x, y locations. Examples of points are tower location, sampling location, etc. Lines represent 1 – dimensional features like roads, streams, etc., and are composed of many or at least two connected points or vertices. Polygons denote 2 – dimensional features like boundaries with three or more vertices that are connected and closed. The vector data are represented in the following figure (fig. 5.1).

Vetiver, commonly known as Khus grass is a perennial grass of Indian origin. Vetiver roots contain fragrant essential oil, which is a perfume by itself. Aroma chemicals such as vetriverol, vetriverone and vetriveryl acetate are prepared from this volatile oil. In India, it is mainly used in perfumes, cosmetics, and aromatherapy, food and f lavouring industries. Since the plant has extensive finely structured fibrous roots, it is useful in both soil and water conservation and the plant itself is drought tolerant. The world production of vetiver oil is around 300 tons per annum of which India contributes about 20-25 tons only. The world major producers are Haiti, India, Java and Reunion. In India, it is cultivated in the states of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, with an annual production of about 20 tons of oil. The present consumption of vetiver oil in India is about 100 tons and 80% of the domestic consumption is met by export only. As the internal demand for vetiver oil is very high, concerns are risingover the improved production and quality of raw materials used. Vetiver is a miracle crop and a big boon for the farmers to increase incomes. This would increase farmer’s income by three to four times. This crop has demand not only in India but also across the world. India is gaining big ground in cultivation of vetiver.

Abstract

Visualisation of geological process raises special issues for scientists and animators. The degree of physical movement of a rising arch or along a fault line may be very small compared to the normal terrain variation. Over a long time period the major changes in the environment may come from the more substantial surface manifestations of changing draining regimes. In Tamil Nadu State in South-Eastern India there are continuing tectonic movements arising from the collision of the subcontinent with the greater Asian land mass. Over comparatively recent times (7000 years) these movements have had a major impact on drainage and other hydrological outcomes. The Cauvery River in particular has migrated several hundred kilometers over this period. A mosaic was made from recent satellite imagery and then manipulated to create surface textures for dates between -7000 years and +1000 years. Changes in the terrain surface, such as rising arch structures and descending grabens, have been modelled and animated. The combination of terrain movement and surface change provides a visual history of the period.

Having explored the advanced analytical techniques that allow us to extract meaningful insights and build predictive models from meteorological data, we now arrive at a crucial stage in the scientific process: communication and understanding. The chapter, “Visualization of Meteorological Data,” focuses on the art and science of transforming complex numerical datasets into insightful visual representations. In a field as inherently spatial and temporal as meteorology, effective visualization is not just about making pretty pictures;it is a fundamental tool for exploration, analysis, and the clear conveyance  of information about atmospheric phenomena (Fig. 10.1).
Consider the sheer volume and multifaceted nature of meteorological data. We grapple with variables spanning three spatial dimensions (and often more when considering altitude), evolving dynamically over time, and encompassing a wide array of physical quantities – temperature, pressure, wind vectors, humidity, precipitation rates, radiation fluxes, and more. Raw numbers and statistical summaries, while essential for quantitative analysis, often fail to reveal the intricate spatial patterns, temporal evolutions, and interrelationships that characterize weather and climate. This is where visualization steps in,
acting as a bridge between the abstract world of numerical data and our intuitive human capacity for visual pattern recognition.

This chapter introduces the readers about volcanoes and associated features and hazards. Volcanic disasters are like any other geohazards in causing dangerous impacts. However, volcanic explosions are preceded by many surficial expressions that can be detected through satellite imageries, thermal sensors, change in magnetic and gravity anomalies, disappearances of vegetation, sudden appearances of anomalous water vapor, thermal springs and abnormal behavior of animals. Hence, unlike other geohazards, volcanic hazards could be forecast with fairly accurate time limits that may allow evacuation and precautionary safety measures. While avoidance is the best mitigation measure, proper land use planning, provision of scientifically designed damming and diversion methods could save lives and infrastructure from lava flows. Though, atmospheric contamination by volcanic gases, ash cloud and pyroclastic materials could not be thwarted and controlled and thus they could cause havoc.

INTRODUCTION

The term “Volcano” is derived from the name of Roman mythical God of fire “Vulcan”. A volcano is an opening of different shapes, through which, molten rock and gas get ejected either violently or simply flow over earth’s surface. The molten rock and gaseous materials are drawn from deep inside of crust or mantle of the Earth. Repeated ejection of molten materials through vent, fissures or plate margins forms volcanic mountains on earth’s continental or submarine regions.

Volcanism is a threat not only to the lives and infrastructure, but it also drastically alters landscape, impacts atmospheric quality and renders forests, cities and villages and cultivation lands useless. In addition, volcanic eruptions are capable of causing changes in global atmospheric cycles. For example, the eruptions of El Chicho’n in Mexico in 1982, Laki volcano in Iceland and Asama Volcano in Japan in the year 1783 and Krakatau volcano of Japan in the year 1883 have all impacted global climate and atmorpheric dynamics.

The terms vulnerable and vulnerability are now bites of every one and used for everything. Vulnerable means to the possibility of attack or harm by any mean. Human beings are vulnerable to Covid-19, computers are vulnerable to virus, softwares are vulnerable to hackers and attackers to control system, environment is vulnerable to pollution. Vulnerabilities refer to the lack of ability to resist the effects of the aggressive environment. Soils are vulnerable to numerous threats like water and wind erosion, depletion of soil organic matter, loss of plant nutrients, salinity, alkalinity, acidity, pollution and contamination, compaction, sealing, crusting, water-logging, aridity, lowering of water table, over grazing, deforestation, landslide, loss and change in soil biodiversity etc. However, this book will describe some of the most pertinent vulnerabilities for soils.

Industrial waste can be solid, liquid, or gaseous in type and is generated by industrial activities throughout a manufacturing process. Depending on its nature, it can be hazardous or non-hazardous. It is important to note that hazardous wastes can be ignitable, toxic, reactive, corrosive, or radioactive and can pose a threat to the environment. Industrial waste includes, among other things, paints, concrete, paper goods, sandpaper, metals and chemical solvents. Most industries face a significant problem associated with the disposal of waste. Due to the significant expenses involved, it is not feasible to collect and treat all of the waste due to the sizeable volume of waste produced by numerous businesses. As a result, especially in developing nations, the majority of industrial wastes are illegally deposited on wastelands like deserted fields

To a layman, wasteland is a piece of land, which is lying uninhabited or uncultivated. These lands are also commonly perceived to produce much less than their potential. Depleted of the green cover and productivity, such lands are often in a critical condition. Broadly, wastelands may be defined as land where the production of biomass is less than its optimum ‘productivity. Wasteland also refers to lands, which are economically unproductive, ecologically unstable and subject to environmental deterioration.

Waste management and soil sustainability are two critical aspects of environmental conservation and sustainable development. As our global population continues to grow and consume resources at unprecedented rates, it becomes increasingly important to manage waste effectively and preserve our soil health and productivity. Anthropogenic activities have consistently produced waste. The World Bank predicts that worldwide garbage production will rise to 70% by 2050 if no substantial actions are taken (Ghosh, 2020). This was not a significant problem when the world’s population was small; however, it is acquired as a major concern with industrialization and urbanization revolution. Lack of proper waste management has caused pollution of water, land, and atmosphere, as well as a significant effect on human health (Raza et al., 2022a; Raza et al., 2022b).

5.1 Waste Treatment and Disposal

Source reduction and feeding the hungry are significant considerations for decreasing avoidable food waste. However, non-edible wastes like livestock manure, agricultural wastes, and unusable food wastes are also classified as organic wastes. The environment and general public’s health may be seriously endangered by improper treatment of these wastes. Wastes can contaminate surface and ground waterways by runoff or leaching if they contain pathogens, chemicals, antibiotics, and nutrients. The breakdown of organic waste also results in the production of methane. As is well known, methane is a powerful greenhouse gas that captures more heat into the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. It is possible to remove organic waste and turn it into biogas, a sustainable energy source that can be utilised to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the likelihood of stream pollution. Further emission reductions are made possible by replacing fossil fuels with biogas, sometimes leading to carbon-negative systems.
