Urban climatology deals with changes in climatic conditions that prevail in large cities and towns that differ from the surroundings. Urban climates are influenced by large built-up areas, increased human activities and dense population and are found to experience differences in temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction and rainfall compared to adjoining areas. Tall buildings, paved streets and parking lots affect radiation balance, wind flow and run-off. The atmosphere in urban areas will have higher concentration of pollutants like carbon monoxide, oxides of sulphur and nitrogen, hydrocarbons, oxidants and particulate matters. Heavy concentration of air pollutants will have considerable impact on temperature, humidity, wind, and precipitation in and around urban areas. Heavy concentrations of air pollutants for longer periods or several days may lead to temperature inversions. The temperature inversions prevent convection and vertical movement of air. The centre of urban area will be warmer by even 5 to 6°C compared to adjoining areas. During summer months, the concrete structures absorb, store and reradiate more solar energy per unit area compared to vegetation. During nights, radiative losses from urban buildings and roads keep city warmer than the rural areas. The average relative humidity in cities is usually lower due to lack of evapotranspiration from vegetation. The mean wind speed will be 20 to 30 percent due to increased frictional drag induced by built up urban terrain (Fig.17.1).
The urban areas influence precipitation patterns in its vicinity as turbulence and convection get modified by city environment.
17.1. Urban Heat Islands
An urban heat island is a type of microclimate that is created when an urban area becomes warmer than the surrounding area. It is common in large cities (Fig.17.2). The characteristic features of urban heat islands are as follows:
• Increased temperature
• Large temperature difference by even 5 to 6°C
• The south facing buildings receive more sunlight in the northern hemisphere
• The tall buildings in urban areas create streets that act like deep valley
• The albedo will be very less. The darker areas lead to more absorption of incoming solar radiation and emit more of long wave radiation
• The concrete structures are built with materials having low specific heat. Therefore, concrete structures warm up faster and lead to quick rise in temperature
• The higher density of buildings reduces wind speeds.

16.1. Global Warming
The industrial revolution from mid 18th century is recognized as the primary cause of atmospheric pollution. Some of the gases like CO2, Chlorofluorocarbons, methane, nitrous oxide etc. are getting released into the atmosphere in greater volumes by combustion of fossil fuels. These gases can absorb the heat radiation leading to increase in air temperature and are called as greenhouse gases. When there is no vertical movement of air, these gases can accumulate near the ground and causes serious health hazards (Fig.16.2). Fig. 16.2: Global warming Under unstable conditions, there will be more convection and vertical movement of air that can prevent pollution near ground level. These air pollutants can be transmitted and carried away to long distance by strong winds. So, the air pollution which defies local, regional or even continental boundaries can cause atmospheric pollution and global warming. Therefore, air pollution control is not an issue for just one location or region and is now a matter of global concern.
16.2. Climate Change
As the greenhouse gases are spreading into the atmosphere, there is gradual increase in the air temperature and if no control measures are uniformly adopted

During most of the years, there will be loss of agricultural production by at least 15 to 20 per cent per annum due to unfavourable weather situations. The farmers practicing agriculture expect uniform returns every year as the investment costs are much higher and cannot afford loss in production. Of late, the inter-seasonal and intra seasonal variations in weather are very frequent. The weather conditions observed were found to exceed even beyond known limits. Exceptional deviation from any one single weather parameter like air temperature, rainfall and wind can trigger considerable loss in production or sometimes even crop failure (Fig.12.1). Fig. 12.1: Components of a microclimate and its interlinkages Large scale weather modification is not practicable to a greater extent as uniform results cannot be expected under these conditions. There is need to explore cost effective management options that may significantly alter some weather parameter that is detrimental to crop production at field level by the farmers themselves. Therefore, microclimatic modification is an emerging technology to alter or change the unfavourable weather conditions detrimental to crop growth using cost effective and easily manageable techniques for minimizing the loss in crop production. The options for microclimatic modification have to be decided based on whether and the nature of weather aberrations. For example, dry spells are most common during rainy season in most of the arid and semi-arid regions. The farmers growing crops under rainfed conditions suffer considerable loss in production due to occurrence of dry spells as the crop experiences moisture stress. These dry spells may occur any time during the growing season. In such situations, the farmer needs to adopt a management option even before sowing a crop. Sometimes, the occurrence of weather aberration cannot be anticipated and the farmer has to prepare for adopting a management option based on weather forecast. Such measures are temporary and needs to be adopted to ward off the unfavourable weather conditions to a certain extent. Microclimatic modification can be a permanent, seasonal or temporary option depending upon the climate of the region. The crop microclimate refers to the climate just above and within the crop canopy and in the soil root zone that can be influenced by the day-today management practices. Microclimate modification is a measure to change or regulate the weather parameter at farm level. The microclimate management option also depends upon the nature and type of the soil as well.

There is growing demand for increasing fruit production as fruits are considered to be healthy, nutritious and easy to digest. Fruits are natural foods and have export potential as well as provide opportunities for increasing employment by establishing fruit processing industries. Some of the fruits can be grown around the year where as some fruits are of seasonal in nature. Usually, the fruit cultivation is undertaken by establishing orchards. In case of orchards, wrong decisions in planting may result in huge loss and therefore right method of planting is the key factor for establishing orchards.
The fruit crops are of three types depending on the adoptability to the climate of the region and are grouped as
• tropical fruits
• sub-tropical fruits
• temperate fruits
The microclimate of the orchards depends upon
• height of the plants/trees
• horizontal spread
• canopy architecture
• spacing/plant density
• age of plantation
• seasonal weather
15.1. Tropical Fruits
The tropical fruits require higher temperature throughout the year. The crops do not require low temperature for breaking dormancy and for flowering. The plants are ever green and grow throughout the year. There plants are well adopted to regions where the minimum temperatures are more than 10°C and very sensitive to frost. There are grown in tropical regions between 23°N to 23°S latitudes. The optimum maximum temperature for growth and development ranges from 30 to 37°C.
15.2. Sub-Tropical Fruits
The sub-tropical fruits perform better between temperate and tropical climates as the plant requires both high and low temperatures. Some of the fruit crops are green and some of those are deciduous. The temperate fruit crops are very sensitive to frost. The sub-tropical fruit plants break dormancy of flower buds

14.1. Slope
It is a crucial topographic factor that affects water drainage, erosion and accessibility of agricultural machinery. Steep slopes increase the risk of soil erosion, and water run-off requiring erosion control measures such as contour ploughing or terracing. Slope also affects the availability of sunlight, as steeper slopes may cast shadows and influence microclimates within a field.
14.2. Altitude / Elevation
Elevation is the vertical distance of a point or location above a reference point, often mean sea level. It influences temperature, atmospheric pressure, and the types of crops that can be grown in an area. Higher altitudes generally experience cooler temperatures, which may limit the choice of crops that can thrive. Elevation affects the length of the growing season and influences the choice of appropriate crop varieties. In summary, elevation is an absolute measure of the vertical distance above a reference point (such as MSL), while it is a relative measure that describes the variation in elevation within a specific area or region. Elevation provides information about the height of a point, whereas it provides insights into the topographic features and slopes of a given agricultural landscape. Both elevation and relief are important considerations in agriculture as they influence factors such as water drainage, temperature gradients, and suitability for specific crops.
14.3. Aspect
Aspect refers to orientation of the slope (north, south, east or west). It affects the distribution of sun light; wind patterns and temperature gradients in a field. In the northern hemisphere, the north side of slope is often shaded while the southern side receives more solar radiation and heat, creating warmer microclimates and potentially influencing the choice of crops or planting strategies. Aspect can also impact the risk of frost or cold air drainage in certain regions. Whereas, in the southern hemisphere, the south side slopes get shaded and north facing slopes receive more solar radiation.
14.4. Relief
Relief refers to the variation in altitude between different points. It is a relative measure on changes in altitude across a particular landscape or agricultural area. The valley slopes are preferred sites for agriculture in mountain regions due to several reasons:
• The valley slopes offer relatively flatter terrain, making it easier for farming activities such as cultivation, irrigation and mechanization.
• The valleys tend to have better access to water resources such as rivers or streams which can be used for irrigation water.
• The valley slopes provide good sun exposure and protection from strong winds creating favourable microclimates for crop growth
• The natural drainage patterns of valleys help preventing water logging and ensure better water management.

The weather plays a very significant role in crop production. The agricultural production depends upon four factors i.e., soil, genetic material, management practices and weather. Of these four factors, the farmers have least control on weather and have to evolve management strategies to cope up with the weather conditions. The crops can be grown only when the seasonal weather conditions are conducive to crop production. The different weather factors on crop growth and development are as follows:
13.1. Temperature
For each species of plants, there are upper and lower limits of temperature beyond which the growth is negligible. The optimum temperatures at which growth is maximum may vary from crop to crop but will be within the range of 15 to 30°C. Temperatures beyond 45°C cause wilting of plants. There are also optimum temperature requirements during different stages of crop growth.
13.1.1. Warm Season Crops: The Warm season crops are rice, sorghum, maize,
pearl millet, groundnut, pigeon pea, cowpea etc. These crops are also called tropical crops. These crops can be grown during monsoon season and in early summer season. The optimum temperatures for these crops fall in the range of 15°C to 38°C.
13.1.2. Cool Season Crops: The crops which grow best under cool weather
conditions are called cool season crops and are generally grown during winter season. The important cool season crops are wheat, mustard, Chickpea, barley, potato, Safflower. These crops are also called temperate crops. The optimum temperature for better growth of these plants range from 10°C to 30°C.
13.2. Effect of Temperature on Growth and Development
The crop development is described in terms of its various stages of growth including germination of seeds, emergence of seedlings, tillering, flower initiation, grain formation, physiological maturity and harvest maturity etc., before it completes its life cycle. The various stages of growth, the crop passes through are called phenophases. Phenology is the study of timing of the phenophases. The temperature and day length (photo period) will have considerable influence on phenology of the crops. The temperature from which crop development begins is called base temperature. The base temperature is considered as 8°C for the crops grown during kharif season and 5°C for the crops grown during winter

The fate of smoke from a wild land fire depends in large part on the airflow carrying it away from the fire which can involve a complex interaction of eddies that may occur near the ground or expand beyond the atmospheric mixed layer (Fig.11.1). The buoyancy of smoke and ambient atmospheric conditions determines how high and how quickly the smoke rises, and thus where it travels.
The smoke plume distribution is affected by number of factors as indicated below:
• Elevation: The smoke plumes at higher elevations disperse the smoke particles more vertically while plumes from lover elevations disperse more horizontally.
• Temperature: The large difference between the smoke and surrounding air affects the Plume dynamics. The buoyancy force increases the vertical velocity of the particles, while heat diffusion increases surrounding air temperature.
• Moisture: The presence of moisture can modify the distribution of smoke and chemistry of smoke particles.
• Topography: Topography can influence emissions that remain within the mixing zone.
• Atmospheric stability: Atmospheric stability can affect the distribution of smoke.

A farm microclimate refers to the specific climatic conditions of a small, localized area within a farm. These conditions can differ significantly from the broader regional climate due to various natural and man-made factors. Understanding and managing microclimates is crucial for optimizing crop growth, animal welfare, and overall farm productivity. Modern commercial dairy production requires a special approach to the microclimate on the farm. High quality milk and animal health depend on the conditions of their keeping. At the same time, farm for dairy production for the most part do not have the means to control and manage the microclimate, in contrast to poultry farm. When organizing the correct process of controlling the microclimate, a prerequisite is the presence of an automated system for collecting data. Generally animals adapt to a wide range of weather conditions although their growth and productivity varies with weather conditions. Buffaloes and cows form the main component in dairy industry. The extent to which these animals can adapt to different weather conditions is given below: Successful management of buffalo rearing will be incomplete without wellplanned and adequate housing facilities (Fig.10.1).
Improper planning in the arrangement of animal housing may result in management problems, increase in disease incidence, additional labour charges and hence decrease in the profit of the farmer. During erection of a house for dairy buffaloes, care should be taken to provide comfortable accommodation for individual animals. It is important to ensure:
• Proper sanitation
• Durability
• Abundant supply of clean water
• Arrangements for the production of clean milk under convenient and
economic conditions.
Buffaloes may be successfully housed under a wide variety of conditions, ranging from close confinement to little restrictions except at milking time. However, two types of farms are in general use.

There is an increased use of Glass houses and poly houses in commercial agriculture. The glass houses and poly houses provide a controlled environment for plants throughout the year. Some of the aspects of related to the advantages of Glass houses and poly houses are highlighted in the following text:
9.1. Glass houses
Glass houses are also referred as greenhouses. The glass prevents harmful ultraviolet radiations. The glass is transparent to solar radiations of wavelengths up to 300 nm and does not allow long-wave radiations to pass through it (Fig.9.1). Therefore, the Glass houses maintain higher temperature and high relative humidity during daytime as well as nighttime and offer the following advantages:
9.1.1. Controlled Environment: Glass houses facilitate regulation of temperature,
humidity, and light intensity, creating optimum environment for growing various plant species. This is especially beneficial for tropical and sub-tropical plants that require specific conditions to grow and survive.
9.1.2. Protection from Pests and Diseases: The enclosed glass house protects
plants from pests and diseases. The glass house also protects the plants from harsh weather conditions thereby minimizing risk of infestations and environmental stresses. Fig. 9.1: Microclimate management in Glass house
9.1.3. Extended Growing Season: By maintaining stable climate, glass houses
enable cultivation of plants that may not survive outdoors in certain climates thereby extending the growing season for sensitive species.
9.1.4. Research and Conservation: Botanical gardens often use glass houses for
research purposes, studying plant growth, genetics and breeding. The glass houses will also serve as a means for conserving rare or endangered plant species by providing stable environment for propagation. The advantage of glass houses is that the structure has long life span.
9.2. Poly houses
The poly houses are constructed using polythene material. The poly houses protect the plants from wind, cold weather, hail storms, extreme temperatures, insects and pests. The polythene house farming is a popular greenhouse technology due to its low cost of construction and maintenance. Generally, heat accumulation (70 to 75 per cent of solar energy) takes place inside the polyhouse. Solar radiation is allowed to pass through the polythene material and the long wave radiation cannot escape through polythene. The benefits of poly houses are:

Forest microclimate is the climate within a forest in contrast to a nearby open area created by a clearing or pasture. A robust observation is that less sunlight reaches the ground in a forest than in open areas, but this depends on the size of the clearing, the height of trees surrounding the clearing, and the location in the clearing (relative to the edge) where measurements are obtained. Daytime temperature is generally lower in forest than in open areas, with greatest differences during the growing season; but this, too, is subject to edge effects and whether the canopy is sparse or dense. Wind near the ground is less than in exposed areas or above the canopy. Another point is that there are various microclimates within a forest canopy. The environment of the forest overstory differs from that of the understory, and this has important consequences for species conservation and protection from climate change. The forest microclimate has important implications for habitat and biodiversity conservation and may act to buffer forest understory organisms from the severity of climate change. Forest microclimates differ not only in contrast with open land, but also vertically with position in the canopy (Fig. 8.1).

Microclimate under irrigated conditions and dryland conditions can differ significantly due to variations in water availability, which influences several environmental parameters such as temperature, humidity, soil moisture, and vegetation cover. The crops are grown both under irrigated and dryland / rainfed situations. The major difference between irrigated and dryland conditions is availability of water. In irrigated areas, the crops are regularly provided with water through irrigation at regular intervals. Under dryland situations, the water availability to the crops depends upon the rainfall and/or stored soil moisture. Under irrigated situations, there are two different possibilities as indicated below:
• vast stretch of irrigated areas
• isolated pockets of irrigated areas in predominantly dry areas. In dryland areas the following possibilities exist:
• humid and moist sub-humid areas where predominantly rice based cropping systems are adopted during rainy season
• per-humid areas where plantation crops and rice grown during rainy season.
• dry sub-humid areas with rice based cropping systems in low lands and finger millet, maize based cropping systems in upland areas
• semi-arid regions where kharif crops are grown during rainy season.
• rabi-crops grown under conserved moisture conditions during post rainy season.
• arid regions where pearl millet based cropping system are practiced during rainy season.
• hill agriculture
The microclimatic conditions are likely to vary between irrigated and rainfed conditions due to different agro-ecological settings. The comparative analyses of microclimatic variation under both conditions are given below:

    Temperature variations in crop canopies can be affected by number of factors including water availability. When soil water is low, canopy temperature can rise rapidly, even upto 10°C warmer than the air temperature. Irrigation can help reduce canopy temperature, but it may not be able to keep below the threshold for heat damage. Canopy management and row orientation can affect the air temperature within a canopy. Potassium fertilization can reduce canopy temperature variation which can increase seed yield. Temperature affects many plant processes including photosynthesis, transpiration, respiration and flowering. The rate of photosynthesis increases with increase in temperature, up to a certain limit. High Photosynthetic rates do not necessarily support high rates of dry matter accumulation may be due to increased respiration. If temperature profiles are measured in crop canopies, normally, it is expected that the temperature may decrease with increase in height and is minimum at the crop canopy in a well irrigated crop during day time. It is mainly due to increase in water vapor content within the crop stand due to soil evaporation. During night time, the temperature decreases with increase in height and temperature of the crop canopy will be more as no transpiration takes place during night time.
4.1. Instability
Atmospheric instability occurs when the earth’s atmosphere is unstable, which leads to highly variable weather patterns. In an unstable atmosphere, there will be rapid changes in temperature, pressure and wind with height (Fig.4.1). The instability is caused by the rising of warm air. Atmospheric instability can lead to the development of thunderstorms, tornadoes and convective clouds. The factors that determine the atmospheric instability are as follows:
4.1.1. Temperature Lapse Rate: Lapse rate is the rate at which the air temperature
changes with altitude. If the air temperature lapse rate is greater than the adiabatic lapse rate, the atmosphere is unstable. The rate at which temperature of an air parcel changes with increase in height without loosing or gaining heat from the surrounding environment is called adiabatic lapse rate. In case of adiabatic process, there will be no exchange of heat between the air parcel and surrounding environment when the air parcel moves vertically upwards.
4.1.2. Humidity: The humidity in the air parcel determines whether it cools at
dry or wet adiabatic lapse rate. Therefore, greater the humidity of the air, unstable conditions will increase. When the dry air mass raises vertically upwards, the rate of decrease in temperature with increase in height is called dry adiabatic lapse rate. The rate at which the moisture air mass gets cooled with increase in height is called wet adiabatic lapse rate.

energy plants need to convert carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates and oxygen. The carbohydrates produced by photosynthesis are used for vegetative and reproductive growth and to increase crop biomass. The solar energy required for photosynthesis is available during day time. In crop canopies radiation is transmitted through leaves and between leaves resulting in changes of spectral composition rapidly with depth. In the absence of vegetation, solar radiation reaches the earth surface after it gets depleted in the atmosphere due to:
• Reflection of incoming radiation by the cloud tops
• Absorption of ultraviolet radiation by the ozone present in the atmosphere and infrared radiation by the greenhouse gases and water vapour
• Scattering of radiation by the solid particles suspended in the atmosphere
The remaining parts of solar radiation called insolation i.e. incoming solar radiation reach the earth surface. After it is incident on the earth surface, a fraction of the solar radiation gets reflected back into the atmosphere. The difference between the incoming solar radiation and outgoing solar radiation is called net radiation. The net radiation can be calculated using radiation balance which takes into consideration both incoming solar radiation and outgoing solar radiation. The equation for radiation balance can be written as:

The atmosphere near Earth’s surface, often referred to as the boundary layer, exhibits unique properties influenced by the interaction between the surface and the atmosphere. These properties are crucial for understanding weather patterns, climate, and various environmental processes. Ancient Indians use to worship five natural elements i.e. earth, water, air, energy and the sky. Perhaps they were aware of the interactive effects and processes between these 5 elements that govern life on earth. In a sense, meteorology itself is a science based on interactive effects of these natural elements. Microclimatology is all about the effect of the interactions between these 5 elements on life over the earth. For a beginner of microclimatology, it is important to understand the properties of the atmosphere near the earth’s surface and get familiar with the concept and terminology used to describe/quantify the physical processes taking place between the lower layers of the atmosphere and the earth’s surface.
2.1. Energy
The major source of energy in the earth atmosphere system is solar energy (Fig.2.1). The outer surface of the sun is very hot and its temperature is estimated to be around 6000°Kelvin (symbol K).
The Kelvin is the base unit of temperature in the international system of units (SI). The Kelvin scale is the absolute temperature scale that begins at the lowest possible temperature that can be attained (absolute zero) taken as 0 degree K. The magnitude or value of each degree of temperature in the Centigrade scale and Kelvin scale is same. The temperature measured in centigrade scale can be converted to Kelvin scale by adding 273.15. The sun emits heat energy in the form of solar radiation. As the solar radiation passes through the atmosphere, it gets partly depleted before reaching the earth’s surface. The processes through which the solar radiation gets depleted in the

1.1. Meteorology and Climatology
Atmospheric science encompasses the main subfields of meteorology and climatology that are similar in the scientific principles and phenomena being examined, but usually differ by approach, time scale, and application. Meteorology is the scientific study of the atmosphere and weather including weather forecasting. It is an interdisciplinary science that involves observing, understanding and predicting weather conditions likely to prevail well in advance (Fig.1.1). The study of meteorology has been around thousands of years, but significant progress did not begin until the 18th century. Climatology is an atmospheric science that focuses on the processes that create weather patterns and variability. Climatology was developed as a science that is based on weather data recorded at multiple locations for comparatively longer periods, usually for 30 years or more. The study of climatology based on the physical processes is influenced by the geographical features, topography and interaction between land and oceans.
1.2. Agricultural Production
Life demands food. The production of food depends upon 4 major factors that are soil, genetic material, management practices and weather. Over a period of time, formers have evolved the cropping strategies based on their local knowledge and experience on the changes in weather within a cropping season. With rapid advances in agricultural sciences, several new varieties of crops were developed, appropriate soil and water management practices were evolved and suitable measures for reducing abiotic and biotic stresses on crops were identified. However, the recent threats of climate change due to increased atmospheric

Introduction 
The fast-changing world has put a vast amount of pressure on the energy system [1]. That has resulted in a sudden increase in global energy consumption. For several centuries fossil fuels have been the bedrock of energy generation, powering industries, households, and transportation. Apart from this mounting evidence of climate change has been characterized by rising global temperatures, extreme weather conditions and rise in the sea level are been directly linked to the emissions generated by the combustion of these fossil fuels. The harmful effect of the greenhouse gases on the environment has impacted globally. We strongly need much safer and more sustainable energy sources. In addition, the main reason behind international relations instability is often linked with the fossil fuel-dependent economies, coupled with the finite nature of such resources, which has underscored the requirement of diversifying the energy mix. Biochar an alternatives to fossil fuels emerging as carbon-rich material produced by heating biomass in anaerobic conditions this product is known as pyrolysis [2]. This substance has the potential that be derived from a variety of biomass waste streams, including animal excreta, food scraps, forestry residues municipal solid waste, and agriculture by-products. Transforming organic waste into stable, carbon-rich products, biochar offers a dual benefit that addresses waste management challenges while contributing to carbon storage. Biochar is a versatile material that has exceptional properties that make it a promising alternative for addressing various environmental and energy challenges [3]. It has unique characteristics that include high porosity, creating a network of interconnected pores that enhance its surface area and reactivity, functional groups that enables biochar to react with a wide variety of substances. The substantial surface area provides ample sites for adsorption a process where pollutants bind to the biochar surface. The material high cation exchange capacity allows it to retain essential nutrients by preventing their leaching and helping in enhancing soil fertility [4]. However, biochar has remarkable stability providing resistant degradation and persisting in the environment for extended periods, making it an effective carbon sequestration tool. The economic benefits of biochar are equally persuasive, as it can be produced from low cost readily available biomass waste thereby reducing waste disposal costs. Furthermore, the process of creating biochar is really simple and effective for the environment and contributes to the overall appeal. There are several studies have underscored biochar’s effectiveness in removing pollutants from water spills [5]. To produce biochar there are several thermochemical conversion techniques are been employed, including torrefaction, gasification, flash carbonization, pyrolysis, and hydrothermal carbonization. among this pyrolysis is the most prevalent method. This process involves biomass heating without oxygen that results in organic matter decomposition and the formation of biochar and bio-oil. Pyrolysis is done under a state of low oxygen, where the biomass is degraded the biomass type, residence time, and thermal efficiency at a given temperature, heating, and feedstock type impact the item formed in due process. The fundamental characteristics and structure of biochar also depend upon the kind of reactor used in the carbonization process [6] organic material synthesized through pyrolysis of different biomass (plant or animal waste. Currently available technologies for characterizing biochar include nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Raman spectroscopy, Braeuer Emmett Teller (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermos Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) [7,8]. Introduction 
Carbon rich solid residue named as biochar produced by heating biomass in a procedure recognized as pyrolysis. During pyrolysis, biomass, including crop and forestry residues, manure, municipal and industrial wastes, is broken down at temperatures exceeding 400°C, with minute to no oxygen present. This procedure results in the making of syngas, bio oil, and biochar. Given its high carbon content, approximately 60% to 90%, biochar addition in soil has been recommended as an effective, long-term method for capturing atmospheric CO2 within terrestrial ecosystems. In addition to its role in reducing greenhouse gas productions and carbon sequestration, biochar offers various advantages for soil quality enhancement. Incorporating biochar into soils can boost crop yields by improvising the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the soil, such as increasing water retention, adjusting soil pH, and enhancing microbial activity (Zoghlami and Paës, 2019). The production of biochar offer several benefits such as carbon sequestration in which produced biochar captures carbon that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere (Rahimi, Anand and Gautam, 2022). This helps mitigate climate change by locking carbon in a steady form for a lengthy period, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. When added to soil, biochar can enhance its physical, chemical, and biological properties. It improves water preservation, nutrient accessibility, and microbial activity, leading to increased soil fertility and crop yields (Saikia et al., 2015)perennial grass species Arundo donax L. was pyrolysed in a fixed-bed reactor and characterization was performed for the liquid and the solid products. The effect of process parameters such as temperature (350-650°C. Biochar production can utilize various types of organic waste materials, including agricultural residues, forestry waste, and certain municipal and industrial wastes. This reduces the burden on landfills and promotes waste recycling. The pyrolysis process used to create biochar can be designed to minimize emissions of harmful gases and particulates, thus contributing to air quality improvement. These byproducts can be used as sources of renewable energy, further reducing the carbon footprint. Biochar can improve soil aeration, reduce soil erosion, and help prevent nutrient leaching, which contributes to overall soil health and ecosystem stability as described in figure 9.1. It can remain in the soil for thousands of years, providing long-term carbon storage benefits. Biochar

Augmented energy demand as well as impacts of employment of fossil coals on human health and environment, stresses and imposes the need to lessen the use of conventional fuels or replace them. Equally, global warming has stretched to a distressing level due to many diverse anthropogenic actions leading to increased pollution. The alternate energy sources are desirable that might be the conspicuous and sustainable approach of enabling environmental remediation, besides meeting the global energy call (Grosser et al 2016, Kanchanasutha et al 2016). A potential solution is generation of Biofuels, either conventional biofuels produced from agricultural crops or advanced biofuels produced from wastes, inedible crops or forestry products (Sreedevi Sarsan et al 2021). Advanced biofuels production especially by the utilization of agricultural and animal wastes using new technologies and processes are gaining increased interest among researchers and general public all over the world. Food waste, municipal trash, animal waste and other wastes can all be utilised as feedstocks to create biogas, a clean and sustainable energy source and thus may be the ideal replacement for traditional energy sources. The raw biomass may be converted into fuel products like biogas by briquetting, gasification, and anaerobic digestion, among other processes (Deepanraj et al 2015). In comparison to landfills, incinerations, and composting processes, anaerobic digestion (AD) is suggested as an inexpensive and environmentally benign technique for the generation of renewable energy (Van Forest et al 2012; Nishio et al 2007; Capson-Tojo et al 2016; Xu, F et al 2018; Cha, M et al 2020). The production of energy-rich biogas and alleviation of issues related to the removal of organic waste are all achieved by anaerobic digestion (AD) of organic solids (Sonakya et al 2001). This is since AD is a highly energy-efficient and ecologically benign technique. In an atmosphere devoid of oxygen, the AD system uses anaerobic microbes to transform the naturally occurring substances in the biomass into biogas. The primary byproduct of AD, biogas, has a methane content of roughly 50-70% by volume and 30- 40% atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) when feedstocks are digested under anaerobic circumstances, with small levels of hydrogen sulphide (H2S) (0.1-3% v/v), humidity, and other trace pollutants also present (Sahota et al. 2018). The generation of biogas is known to be influenced by factors such as waste types, pretreatment procedures, the microorganisms or enzymes added, operation circumstances and design of the digestors (Mao et al 2015).

In a time when the world is in dire need of sustainable energy solutions, investigating biofuels becomes an essential path to supplying the always expanding supply[1]. This book chapter explores the dynamic world of solid and liquid biofuels, providing a thorough analysis of their properties, methods of production, uses, and wider ramifications in relation to renewable energy sources. Setting the scene, the introduction clarifies the role of biofuels in the larger context of renewable energy. Exploring solid and liquid biofuels becomes critical as the globe struggles with issues like climate change, depleting fossil fuel reserves, and the need to switch to cleaner energy sources[2]. These biofuels, which are defined as energy carriers made from biomass, offer a viable substitute and have the capacity to both reduce environmental impact and promote energy security. As the chapter progresses, biofuels are divided into two main categories: liquid and solid. Biofuels that are solid, such as wood, agricultural leftovers, pellets, and briquettes, serve as a starting point for investigating alternative energy sources. This section walks readers through the complexities involved in producing solid biofuel, including harvesting, pre-treatment, and creative pelletization methods. By doing this, it highlights the renewable nature of solid biofuels and their ability to lower greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting their benefits for the environment. Simultaneously, difficulties associated with its application, ranging from administrative worries to land use issues, are examined closely. Turning its attention to liquid biofuels, the chapter tells the story of ethanol, biodiesel, and advanced biofuels. By examining the choice of feedstock, manufacturing procedures, and real-world uses, it highlights the adaptability of liquid biofuels in the energy system. Although they are not without difficulties related to land use, food production, and water use, their ability to function with current infrastructure and their critical role in improving energy security stand out as distinguishing characteristics[3].

Introduction 
To fight climate change and lessen dependency on fossil fuels, the world urgently needs renewable and environmentally friendly energy sources. Hydrogen has become a promising energy carrier due to its versatility and capacity to generate energy from renewable resources without releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The world's demand for energy has been steadily increasing as a result of urbanization, economic expansion, and population rise. With an estimated 10 billion people on the earth by 2050, energy consumption is only expected to increase. Fossil fuels, which include oil, coal and gas have been widely used to generate energy and are predicted to do so at least until 2050 (see Fig.6.1) [1]. Figure 1. These fuels generate a large amount of greenhouse gases (GHGs) during combustion, especially carbon dioxide (CO2), which is connected to climate change and global warming. In addition, burning fossil fuels releases particulate matter (PM), sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and other pollutants that are harmful for human health. In addition, the unequal distribution of fossil fuel supply has led to increased instability globally and worries about energy security. Numerous nations started making investments in energy from renewable sources as concerns about the environment and energy security have grown. Because they emit little to no greenhouse emissions, renewable energy resources like hydroelectricity, wind, and solar power contribute to lowering the energy industry's overall environmental impact (see Fig.6.2) [4].

Introduction 
Renewable and more eco-friendly sources of fuel must be a major concern of our nation for the betterment of our environment because a growing population requires more energy. Fossil fuels have played a significant role in driving the advancement of society, economy, and development. Fossil fuels are the most used sources for the fulfilment of energy requirements. The predominant source of energy on a global scale is fossil fuels, which account for 88% of total energy production (Li et al., 2019). These sources are finite and depleting sources and have a significant negative impact on the environment through the emission of greenhouse gases, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and particulate matter (Ritchie et al., 2023). These gases cause global warming by trapping heat, which causes climate change and its side effects, such as increased temperatures globally, more frequent and intense heat waves, and altered weather patterns (Solarin, 2020). In 2017, there was a 1.6% increase in CO2 emissions related to the combustion of fossil fuels, and this trend is anticipated to continue (Khoo et al., 2020). Fossil fuels, on the other hand, are non-renewable sources of energy that will deplete rapidly within fifty years (Chew et al., 2018). In an age marked by increasing environmental concerns and a growing urgency to combat climate change, the pursuit of sustainable and eco-friendly energy sources has never been more critical. Among the renewable energy options, biofuels have emerged as a prominent contender, holding the promise of reduced carbon emissions and a path toward a greener, more sustainable future (Takeuchi et al., 2002). Biofuels, derived from organic materials like trees algae, and waste, have attracted a lot of attention because they have the potential to lessen our reliance on fossil fuels and reduce the negative effects of climate change. Figure 5.1 shows the classification of biological feedstocks utilized in biofuels comprising four distinct generations: first, second, third, and fourth (Alalwan et al., 2019). Edible biomasses like sugar beet, corn, wheat, rice corn, etc come under the category of first generation. Since these feedstocks are in competition with food harvests for a specific quantity of land, fertilisers, and water, the viability of first-generation biofuels is subject to discussion (Paschalidou et al., 2016). Subsequently, the resources and energy utilised in the cultivation of feedstocks are inefficiently utilised, resulting in costly production. Furthermore, there exists a discourse surrounding the potential contribution of biofuel to the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). This is because certain biofuel varieties may generate negative net energy gains, thereby increasing greenhouse gas emissions throughout the production process. However, the most contentious topic continues to be the "food versus fuel" dilemma.

4.1 Introduction 
The growing recognition of biofuels as a competitive renewable energy source is increasingly evident, particularly when compared to the fossil fuel energy's limited supply, unstable geopolitical environment, and environmental repercussions associated with fossil fuel energy. In the broader context of renewable energy sources (RES), which are characterized as sustainable resources long-time availability at an affordable price and devoid of adverse effects, biofuels emerge as a promising category.(Charters, 2001) Biofuels include any type of energy-dense material that is either directly acquired from biological activities or is obtained through the chemical conversion of biomass from previous species.(Rodionova et al., 2017) Because biomass can be effectively converted into energy, biofuels play a crucial role in supplying energy needs and consumptions. The importance of biofuels in the global energy landscape is underscored by several factors, making them relevant technologies for both developing and industrialized countries.(Demirbas, 2007) Fuel, a concept central to energy discourse, encompasses substances that store and release energy when subjected to a chemical reaction. It serves as the lifeblood of energy systems, powering various sectors from transportation to electricity generation. The variety of fuels available is staggering; they include traditional petroleum-based fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas, in addition to renewable energy resources like solar and wind and, most crucially, biofuels and alternative energy sources like nuclear power.(M et al., 2023) Within the realm of biofuels, there exists a multifaceted spectrum, where each type offers unique advantages and applications. Bioethanol, derived primarily from crops such as corn and sugarcane, stands out as a prominent example. Biodiesel, synthesized from vegetable oils or animal fats, represents another significant category. Additionally, advanced biofuels, produced through cutting-edge technologies like cellulosic ethanol and algae-based biofuels, showcase the ongoing innovation within the biofuel industry.(Vickram et al., 2023) There are a number of reasons why people choose biofuels over conventional fuels, but their favorable effects on the environment are the main one. Unlike fossil fuels, biofuels present a renewable and sustainable option, as they are derived from organic materials that could be replenished. This contrasts starkly with the finite nature of fossil fuel resources, which are not only depleting but also contribute to ecological degradation. Moreover, the instability in the geopolitical landscape surrounding fossil fuels, with its attendant economic and security implications, further accentuates the appeal of biofuels as a more secure and resilient energy source.(Lee, Clark and Devereaux, 2008) When

3.1 Introduction 
The continuous rise in CO2 levels is poised to culminate in a profound global warming impact. Projections suggest that by 2030, CO2 levels could nearly triple, driven by the burgeoning population of motor vehicles. This pressing issue underscores the urgency for the current generation to scrutinize its fuel choices and explore alternative options. Biomass emerges as a pivotal contender, offering a trinity of fuel phases. Escalating petroleum prices and growing apprehensions about the role of fossil fuels in contributing to global warming have spurred a quest for biofuels, recognized for their environmentally friendly attributes. The worldwide energy consumption has increased by an astounding 4 to 5% due to the combination of industrialization and the growing human population. Energy insecurity presents a number of puzzles, including rapidly decreasing fossil fuel reserves due to rapid industrialization, skyrocketing gasoline prices, growing dependence on Middle Eastern oil supplies, and the deleterious effect of fossil fuels on greenhouse gas emissions. (Fig 3.1). Figure 1. Air pollution due to fossil fuel smoke from industries & transportation The UN's June 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro set the stage for addressing environmental issues such as acid rain and the greenhouse effect caused by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The goal of the Kyoto Protocol, an agreement between Russia, Japan, and Europe, is to reduce CO2 emissions. The ability of first-generation biofuels to lower CO2 emissions has drawn attention. But there is a lot of criticism about how they use land and how it affects the supply of food. A more complex option is provided by secondgeneration biofuels, which are made of leftover animal fat and lignocellulosic biomass. The third generation focuses on algae, namely single-celled organisms (SCO), as a viable substitute in the fuel industry. Within this discourse, "biofuels" refer to chemicals that are enhanced with energy. When burned, biofuels release fewer toxic emissions than fossil fuels, making them renewable resources. Furthermore, no carbon dioxide (CO2) is emitted into the environment by them; instead, any carbon released during combustion is absorbed by plants as they grow.

2.1 Introduction 
The world is encountering a severe power and environmental crisis. Adopting sustainable progress is the best means to protect our environment and maximise the use of available resources. The urgent issues, encompassing diverse types of pollution and carbon emissions, highlight the necessity to shift towards renewable energy sources. This shift is essential for diminishing our dependence on fossil fuels, addressing the on-going challenges regarding climate change, and confronting the exhaustion of current energy reserves. Furthermore, mitigating water pollution is an essential component of ensuring ecological sustainability [1,2]. Water supplies are rapidly being contaminated due to diverse contaminants including heavy metals, and harmful chemicals. While industrialization is critical for societal growth, it is critical to recognise the negative environmental consequences caused by numerous processes that emit hazardous substances. Improper disposal of untreated wastewater can negatively impact ecology and biodiversity [3]. As a result, it is critical to use environmentally friendly and sustainable treatment methods that adhere to green development principles. This will bolster industrialization efforts while upholding water pollution safeguards for recovery and reuse. Given the prevailing energy crisis, traditional wastewater treatment facilities have become financially unsustainable due to their high energy consumption. Traditional wastewater treatment is both costly and demands substantial energy resources. Furthermore, these approaches fall short of efficiently eradicating recalcitrant organic waste, heavy metals, and other persistent contaminants. Moreover, many of these treatment processes require regeneration. Microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology has emerged as an ecofriendly treatment option capable of effectively eliminating stubborn organic pollutants and heavy metals over the long term. Microbial fuel cells are chosen over other current treatment methods because to their reduced energy needs and lower chemical usage [4,5]. In addition to lowering energy usage, MFCs possess the ability to produce ample bioenergy, which can help alleviate the energy shortage. This provides a cleaner alternative for generating renewable energy in favour of sustainable development and environmental protection as depicted in Figure 2.1.

1.1 Introduction to Sustainable Energy
The idea of sustainable energy has come to light in the twenty-first century as the globe struggles with rising energy demands, environmental degradation, and the menacing threat of climate change. It offers hope and a way forward for a more promising future. A major change in the production, distribution, and consumption of energy resources is what sustainable energy entails. It is a paradigm that includes a range of clean and renewable energy sources, technologies, and methods with the goal of supplying our energy demands with the least amount of harm to the environment (Andrews and Shabani, 2014). 1.2 Importance of Sustainable Energy Sources Sustainable energy is of paramount importance due to several interconnected reasons listed below and shown in Figure 1:
1.2.1 Environmental Concerns: For many years, conventional fossil fuelbased
energy sources like coal, oil, and natural gas have formed the foundation of our energy system. But as they burn, greenhouse gases (GHGs) mostly carbon dioxide (CO2) are released into the environment (Hosseini and Wahid, 2016). These greenhouse gases are the main causes of climate change, which raises global temperatures, brings on harsh weather, and raises sea levels. Conversely, sustainable energy sources are crucial for reducing climate change because they emit little or no greenhouse gases when in use.
1.2.2 Finite Nature of Fossil Fuels: Because fossil fuels are limited resources,
their stocks are running out quickly. The task that follows is to ensure that future generations have access to economical and dependable energy sources. Because they are renewable or endless, sustainable energy sources provide a solution to the problem of energy security (Su-Ungkavatin et al., 2023).
1.2.3 Economic Benefits: Making the switch to renewable energy can be
very profitable. It can improve national energy security and lessen trade deficits by fostering innovation, generating jobs, and lowering dependency on energy imports. Furthermore, because they frequently have lower operating and maintenance costs than fossil fuel-based systems, sustainable energy technologies can result in cost savings over time (Shafiei et al., 2015).

Introduction 
NEP was announced by Sri Narendra Modi, the PM of India on July 29,2020. The system was introduced after the debates by experts from various fields. The earlier education system was 10+2+3 which changed to 5+3+3+4.The NEP 2020 have less curriculum contents and increases learning, reasoning and logical skills. After the completion of UG courses in the higher education they may opt for the Research Methodology. The 5+3+3+4 design is equivalent to the age groups 3-8 years, the foundational stage which is mainly based on play or activity based learning, 8-11 years, the preparatory stage which is based on play, discovery, activity based and interactive classroom learning, 11-14 years, the middle stage is based on experiential learning in Science, Mathematics, Arts, Social Science and Humanities and 15-18 years, the secondary stage emphasized on multidisciplinary study, greater critical thinking, flexibility, student choice of subjects. Government will constitute a Gender Composition plan to provide equal and standard education to all girls and third gender learners. 10th and 12th standard students are no longer to sit for board exams which will be accessible to test core competencies rather than memorised facts with all students allowed to take the exam twice. Internships will be started from 6th standard. The teaching upto 5th standard will be in regional languages and mother tongue. The assessment covers reforms with 360 degrees overall progress report tracking the progress for achieving learning outcomes. Within 2030, the B.Ed degree duration will be 4 years. The holistic U.G education will be having several exit options and certification will be provided.

Introduction

The inclusion of genderresponsive policies is one of this agenda’s most important but often ignored components. Encouraging inclusive and sustainable development outcomes requires acknowledging and addressing the unique needs and contributions of different genders. Empowering women and other marginalized genders have positive effects on resilience, economic productivity, and environmental stewardship that go beyond local communities. Policies that are gender responsive aim to address systemic disparities by advancing equal opportunities and involvement in decision-making. These policies seek to empower marginalized groups while also utilizing their distinct viewpoints and skills to tackle urgent global issues. Women are important in agriculture and natural resource management, for example, so their input is essential in developing environmental policies that work. Gender considerations can be effectively integrated into development frameworks to produce more comprehensive solutions that lead to sustainable outcomes. In addition, promoting gender parity is not just a question of justice but also a critical component of sustainable development. Greater gender parity is associated with faster economic growth and better social outcomes in nations, according to a wealth of research. Entire communities gain when women have access to economic opportunities, healthcare, and education. In order to achieve sustainable development goals and make sure that no one is left behind, creating gender-responsive policies is therefore not just an ethical duty but also a practical necessity. In conclusion, examining the relationship between gender and sustainable development can help us better understand the many issues our world is currently facing. Gender-responsive policies should be given top priority so that we can help everyone reach their full potential and encourage creativity and resilience. This strategy opens the door for a more sustainable and inclusive future by promoting equitable development and bolstering our group’s capacity to handle social, economic, and environmental issues.

Introduction 
Sustainable development is one of the most important concepts in a business organization. In order to satisfy all the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own requirements, sustainable development is a comprehensive strategy to growth. In order to build a stable and equitable future, it incorporates social inclusion, economic progress, and environmental conservation. The “three pillars” or “three dimensions” of sustainability—economic, social, and environmental—are frequently used to frame the idea of sustainable development. The North East Indian state of Assam’s cultural and economical legacy has an intricate connection to the long and prosperous past of the Assam Silk Industry. From the very ancient times, the production of silk from silkworm and weaving into beautiful garments can be seen in this part of the region.Evidence indicates that the cultivation of silk and weaving were well established in the region by the first millennium BCE, incorporating thousands of years to the cultural heritage of silk weaving in Assam.The indigenous communities of Assam, particularly the Bodo-Kacharis, have been identified for spreading sericulture to the area. Assam produces three types of silk, namely Muga Silk which is also termed as Golden Muga, Pat Silk and Eri or Endi Silk. Also known as the “Golden Silk”, Muga Silk is unique only to Assam and hugely popular because of its natural sheen which increases with each wash. The silk is produced by a special silkworm Antheraea assamensiswhich is endemic to Assam. The town of Sualkuchi, in the Kamrup district of Assam, India, is home to the well-known traditional silk-weaving industry. Sualkuchi, dubbed the “Manchester of Assam,” is well-known for its superior silk goods, especially those crafted from Assamese-only Muga, Eri, and Pat silk(Ghosh, 2021; (Rajesh et al., 2020) The Assam Silk is considered as one of the finest in regional, national and international market because of its superior quality, bright colors and attractive designs. It has a good amount of potential to boost the economic development of Assam. Despite having such importance, it has been observed that the silk industry is facing a lot of problems which is causing a major setback in its growth. The Silk Industry of Assam is highly unorganized because there are less or no educated laborers which results in shortage of agricultural laborers ultimately leading to production shortage. The Assam silk industry, known for producing exquisite silk varieties like Muga, Eri, and Pat silk, faces several marketing challenges that hinder its growth and global competitiveness. Despite being geographically unique particularly Muga Silk, its brand identity is not widely recognized in outside the market. Its reach is restricted to premium and high-end fashion markets due to this lack of worldwide awareness. The majority of Assam’s silk output is limited to local and regional markets. The industry’s minimal web presence and inadequate marketing infrastructure make it difficult for it to penetrate larger domestic and international markets. Silk from Assam is not sufficiently promoted in international forums. There are government initiatives; however, there is a lack of consistency and broad audience reach in marketing activities. In marketplaces where there is competition, this causes the silk to be less visible.Producing Assam silk, particularly Muga silk, requires a lot of work and money. The final product’s high cost of manufacture restricts its customer base to a premium market niche. This lowers total sales and narrows the target market.

This shift is crucial in meeting the evolving behaviours of Gen Z, who emphasize wellness and environmental considerations in their purchasing choices. E-commerce platforms possess powerful tools that influence consumer behaviour, especially with the Gen Z demographic. This generation is well known for its tech-savviness and strong social and environmental consciousness and responds uniquely to online marketing strategies. E-commerce platforms are pivotal in shaping Gen Z’s health and sustainability practices. They achieve this by providing a wide variety of wellness-oriented products and information, which assists in educating and motivating consumers about healthy lifestyle. Additionally, these platforms feature eco-friendly products and promote sustainable practices, aligning the Gen Z’s growing concern for environmental issues. The choice of this topic was inspired by a few things such as health consciousness and sustainable consumption. This interdisciplinary topic combines insights from consumer psychology, digital marketing, and environmental science, offering valuable implications for businesses and policymakers aiming to engage this tech-savvy generation effectively. The focus on this emerging area of research helps fill gaps in existing literature and provides strategic guidance for optimizing digital commerce strategies. Case studies on MyFitnessPal and Nike’s Move to Zero initiative demonstrate how an e-commerce platform can promote health awareness and sustainable consumption among Gen Z. This topic will aid businesses and marketers in customizing their online strategies to align with Gen Z’s emphasis on health and sustainability. It assists policymakers and environmental organizations in formulating improved practices and regulations for responsible consumption. Developers of e-commerce platforms can leverage these insights to design features that align with users’ values. For researchers, it enriches the understanding of consumer behaviour and digital marketing. As Suzanne Collins writes in The Hunger Games, “Destroying things is much easier than making them,” a sentiment that captures the destructive trajectory of unsustainable practices that both novels explore. This paper aims to examine how dystopian narratives, with a particular focus on The Hunger Games and The Road, contribute to sustainable development discourse. By analyzing the themes of resource depletion, environmental control, and social inequality, this study situates these narratives within eco-critical and dystopian studies frameworks, offering a deeper understanding of how literature shapes perceptions of sustainability. Key milestones include the 1992 National Policy on Education, which emphasized inclusive practices, and the 2009 Right to Education Act, which mandated free and compulsory education for all children, including those with disabilities. Recent initiatives have focused on improving accessibility, teacher training and integrating students with diverse needs into mainstream classrooms, reflecting a growing commitment to equitable educational opportunities for all. Following this cause, the third goal of sustainable development that highlights the significance of ensuring and promoting healthy lives is worth mentioningtowards the effort of massification of the health insurance. By integrating finance, the third Sustainable Development Goal emphasizes a crucial initiative aimed at achieving universal health coverage for every citizen, which encompasses state health insurance for all individuals(Pauly, 1994). This initiative aims to equip citizens with the financial resilience needed to navigate an uncertain future, particularly concerning health-related challenges. In the context of health insurance frameworks, understanding the accessibility of initiatives aimed at the bottom of the pyramid is crucial for realizing universal health coverage towards achieving the SDGs’ (Pablos-Mendez, Cavanaugh, & Ly, 2016). The effectiveness of accessibility is intricately linked to the level of awareness that exists within the community. As the landscape of health insurance is ever-dynamic, understanding its intricacies will be crucial moving forward.For a thorough exploration, a researcher should have a wide-ranging grasp of the discipline, including theoretical, contextual, and methodological perspectives. Taking this into consideration, present chapter aims to explore a theoretical aspect of the review through a bibliometric analysis (Faruk, Rahman, Heliyon, & 2021, n.d.) of the literature spanning from 1984 to 2024 (Lebek, Uffen, Neumann, Hohler, & Breitner, 2014). This theoretical perspective will guide us in exploring how to reflect on the answers effectively. Theories illustrate methods for examining and establishing a structure for comprehending occurrences (Mahajan, n.d.). Furthermore, the theory clarifies how phenomena connect with the practical world, providing a distinct path and perspective for the researcher. This upcoming section will outline the reasoning behind this study, which entails performing a bibliometric analysis of the literature through the PRISMA Protocol (Moher et al., 2009), succeeded by a comprehensive text analysis of the chosen literature. The next section provides a concise overview of the theories explored within the realm of health insurance literature. This review adopts the PRISMA protocol (Moher et al., 2009) to scrutinize the articles to be included in the review. The protocol involves two phases of scrutinization, which consist of identification and screening. In the identification phase, I selected the Scopus register (Malanski, Dedieu, & Schiavi, 2021) and collected a database of 16797 articles. I gathered this database based on the “Article titles” criterion, including the keywords “Health Insurance” or “Health” and “Insurance” from 1984 to 2024, encompassing 50 years of literature. The year selection provides a timeline of the 50 years of academic scholarship related to the subset of health insurance as a research topic. After applying the language filter of English, duplication, and automation tools to this dataset, I were able to obtain 10961 articles for the subsequent screening stage. In this stage of screening, I have used the filter of subject area by selecting the subject area of Social Sciences; Business, Management, and Accounting; Decision Science; Economics, Econometrics, and Finance, which leads the collection of the 2580

SDG 3 emphasizes good health and well-being for people globally. In this chapter, we will focuses on the health and well-being of the Indigenous Khasi Tribe living in Meghalaya, India. The Khasi Tribe comprises 7 sub-tribes, commonly known as ‘Seven Huts’ or ‘HynniewTrep, HyniewSkum’ in the Khasi language. The 7 sub tribes are Khynriam, Pnar, Bhoi, War, Maram, Lyngngam and Dikko. Although the culture, tradition, and beliefs are shared among all subtribes, earning them the common name Khasi Tribe, there are slight differences in terms of topography. Some sub-tribes live in sloping or steep mountainous areas, engaging primarily in forestry and horticulture, while others reside in plain areas, where they cultivate agricultural crops. As an indigenous group, the Khasi community follows certain beliefs and practices related to health and well-being. The Khasi tribe is a matrilineal society where women hold great responsibility at home and in the community. Some researchers have acknowledged that the Khasi tribe is one of the tribes in India with a better status in terms of literacy rates and nutritional status. (D Agrahar- Murugkar, 2004). Approximately 83% of the Khasi tribe are agrarian. The main food items that boost their immune system and make them strong and healthy include rice, dal, potato, tomato, bamboo shoot, pumpkin, green vegetables, citrus fruits, and meat (beef, pork, fish, eggs, and dry fish), which they cook in their own indigenous style. The majority of them are non-vegetarian. A common stimulant is betel nut, which has been used since ancient times as a social mediator to connect with others and form friendships. The Khasi people are hardworking; enjoy games and sports, and traditional music. In terms of social well-being, the Khasi tribe has a strong sense of “we feeling”, supporting one another, following ethical and moral instincts, and respecting one another. They believe in the spirits of Mother Nature (ki blei, ki basa). To maintain strong bonding and enhance Khasi Tribe sentiments, various festivals are celebrated every year, such as Shad Suk Mynsiem, Shad Nongkrem, Seng Kut Snem, Pom Blang, and Beh Diengkhlam. They also pay homage to freedom fighters who have died for the Khasi land, such as Tirot Sing, Kiang Nongbah, and Phan Nonglait. Following the legacy of these freedom fighters, various leaders are heading civil groups that monitor the performance of government administration and other welfare states for common social well-being.

One such program is The Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) program, which began on October 2, 1975. In India, ICDS is the most important government intervention for reducing maternal and child malnutrition and it has grown to become the world’s largest program of its kind. The ICDS aims to provide an integrated package of early childhood services in order to lay a solid foundation for the development of the nation’s human resources. The ICDS scheme is intended to be both preventive and developmental in nature. ICDS gives hope to millions of vulnerable women and children by assisting and supporting them during times of food insecurity and rapid growth. Because of its nationwide coverage, this program has all of the necessary structures in place and provides nutritional safety for the most vulnerable and poorest of the poor. Within SDG 3, reducing maternal mortality and decreasing neonatal and child mortality are key priorities, represented by Targets 3.1 and 3.2, respectively. The global goal for SDG 3.1 is to lower the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) to fewer than 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030. For individual countries, a supplementary target is set to reduce their national MMR to below 140 per 100,000 live births. A nation’s progress is fundamentally tied to the health and well-being of its mothers, which is a crucial factor in achieving equitable resource distribution, reducing poverty, and promoting sustainable development. Tragically, approximately 536,000 women die each year from maternal health complications, with 99% of these deaths occurring in developing nations. India, contributing about 25% of global maternal deaths, faces a critical challenge, with around 136,000 maternal deaths occurring annually. The country has set an ambitious goal to reduce its MMR to below 100 deaths per 100,000 live births. To address these issues and support sustainability, Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) indicators play an essential role in monitoring maternal and child health (MCH) outcomes. These indicators include measures such as immunization coverage, institutional delivery rates, home delivery rates, and antenatal care coverage. By tracking these metrics policymakers can assess the effectiveness of maternal health services and identify areas that require improvement. Utilizing RCH indicators to inform policies and programs contributes to better health outcomes for mothers and children and helps reduce mortality rates, which aligns with the objectives of SDG 3. Certain regions of India have made notable strides in improving MCH. For example, the northeastern state of Assam saw significant improvements in RCH indicators between 2010 and 2015. During this time, the rate of institutional deliveries increased substantially ensuring more women had access to safe childbirth services. The government has also strengthened maternal health care by implementing various MCH programs, including the RCH initiatives and other flagship schemes.

Yoga offers holistic benefits that address well-being across multiple dimensions—physical fitness, mental clarity emotional balance, and social cohesion—making it an invaluable approach to fostering contentment and sustainable living. Yoga integrates mindfulness minimalism, and responsible consumption, aligning with global initiatives to address environmental issues and advance sustainable development goals (SDGs). This chapter explores the transformative potential of yoga in promoting health, happiness, and sustainability. By reviewing its role in physical and psychological well-being, social development, and ecological consciousness, the chapter aims to demonstrate how yoga can serve as a personal wellness practice and a contributor to global sustainable development efforts. Through this examination, we can better understand the broader impacts of yoga, highlighting its capacity to support individual transformation while contributing to a more equitable and sustainable world.
Yoga: Historical and Philosophical Foundations
Yoga has its roots in ancient India, dating back over 5,000 years, which was developed as a system of physical, mental, and spiritual practices aimed at achieving harmony and self-realization (Sengupta, 2012). The term “yoga” is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj, which translates to “to unite” or “to join.” This signifies the interconnectedness of the body, mind, and spirit. The philosophical foundations of yoga are laid out in texts such as Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and the Bhagavad Gita where yoga is described as a path to achieving balance, clarity, and peace through discipline, meditation, and ethical living. One of the significant branches of this system is Hatha Yoga, which emphasizes physical postures (asanas), breathing control (pranayama), and mental concentration. Hatha yoga is deeply rooted in ancient Indian texts such as the Hatha Yoga Pradipika by Svatmarama and the Gheranda Samhita, where it is described as a tool for mastering body and mind. While traditional yoga aimed at spiritual liberation, Hatha yoga was mainly concerned with physical and mental control, often seen as preparatory for more profound meditative practices. In the modern world, yoga has evolved into a global wellness practice, emphasizing physical postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama) and meditation. This adaptation has made yoga accessible to a diverse audience including those seeking physical health, mental clarity, or spiritual growth. Yoga’s core values of mindfulness, non-attachment, and ethical living continue to offer relevant solutions to contemporary challenges, such as mental health, sustainability and social responsibility. Its holistic nature makes it a valuable tool for fostering individual well-being while promoting broader ecological and societal harmony.

Biofuels have emerged as a key solution in the energy transition toward sustainable energy, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and cutting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The demand for biofuels has been steadily increasing due to environmental concerns, government promotional policies, and technological advancements. The factors driving biofuel demand, current market trends, and future projections are the global demand for biofuels is experiencing rapid growth due to government policies, energy security concerns, and advancements in sustainable biofuel production. As more countries implement biofuel mandates and invest in next-generation biofuels, demand is expected to rise significantly in the coming years, positioning biofuels as a critical component of the global energy transition. Governments worldwide have implemented various policies to promote biofuel production and consumption. These policies aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance energy security, and support rural economies. Ethanol remains the most widely used biofuel, with major producers like the U.S., Brazil, and China increasing production to meet rising demand. The U.S. and Brazil collectively account for over 80% of global ethanol production. Bioethanol production originated in Brazil in the early 20th century, where sugarcane was used to produce ethanol as a fuel additive. However, the United States also played a significant role in the large-scale commercialization of bioethanol, especially from corn, starting in the 1970s during the oil crisis. Brazil remains a global leader in sugarcane-based ethanol, while the U.S. leads in corn-based ethanol production. Biodiesel demand is growing, particularly in the European Union, Indonesia, and Argentina. Indonesia’s B30 program (30% biodiesel blending) has significantly boosted demand. Between 2005 and 2015, the biodiesel production experienced a sevenfold increase and is projected to grow by an additional 35% by 2025 (OECD/ FAO, 2014). Biofuel policies have played a crucial role in shaping the growth of biofuel production worldwide. Since their inception, these policies have provided financial incentives, blending mandates, and research support, which have driven large-scale production. The impact of these policies varies across major biofuelproducing nations, including the United States, Brazil, the European Union, China, and India (Table 1). The U.S. biofuel industry expanded significantly due to the

Biofuel crops play a crucial role in the global transition towards renewable energy. With increasing concerns about climate change and energy security, biofuels have emerged as a viable alternative to fossil fuels. However, their economic viability is influenced by various factors, including production costs, market demand, government policies, and environmental implications. The United States has been the most prominent fuel ethanol producer since 2007, followed by Brazil. Together the United States and Brazil account for 84% of the global ethanol production. European Union, China and Canada are the other leading fuel ethanol producers. Fuel ethanol production and consumption continue to rise, regardless of variations in crude oil prices. The United States is the largest producer, generating 60 billion liters primarily from corn, while Brazil follows with 33 billion liters, mainly derived from sugarcane (https://www.statista.com.) Ethanol production in India started in 1938 with recommendations to convert molasses into alcohol, eventually resulting in the enactment of the Power Alcohol Act in 1948. The Ethanol Blending Programme (EBP), introduced in 2003, mandated a 5% ethanol blend (E5). However, due to supply shortages in 2004-2005, the blending requirement was made optional. In the 2013-14 period, a total of 38 crore liters of ethanol was procured for blending with petrol. This amount significantly increased to 567 crore liters in the Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2022-23, achieving an ethanol blend level of E11.7. Acknowledging the substantial progress in the ethanol fuel blending initiative for a greener transition and Atmanirbhar Bharat, the government revised the target to E20 by 2025–26 and set an E30 goal for 2030 (NAAS, 2024). The proposed share of E20 is from sugarcane-based ethanol 10%, maize 7% and other damaged food grains 3.0%. The recently reported data during Jan 2025 showed the achievement of 19.6% blending in petrol (PIB, GOI, 2025)

Fourth-generation biofuels, also known as advanced liquid biofuels, represent a progression of biofuel production leveraging advanced technologies (Chiaramonti & Maniatis, 2020). They incorporate the concept of “carbon capture and storage (CCS)” at both the feedstock and processing levels. Utilizing non-competitive feedstocks like algal biomass, cellulosic materials, and genetically engineered microorganisms, 4G biofuels ensure renewable and sustainable production without relying on arable land or food crops. The feedstock is designed not only to enhance processing efficiency but also to capture more carbon dioxide as the crop grows. Thermochemical processing methods are coupled with CCS technologies, which direct the generated carbon dioxide into geological formations or storage areas such as depleted oil fields or mineral storage as carbonates (International Renewable Energy Agency [IRENA], 2021). Fourth-generation biofuels have the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and can even achieve carbon neutrality or negativity compared to previous generations of biofuels. This concept aligns with the idea of “Bioenergy with Carbon Storage (BECS)” (Demirbas, 2010). These advanced biofuels are currently in the development and experimental stages, encompassing various applications related to technology, processing, and feedstock. The primary feedstock for fourth-generation biofuels production consists of genetically engineered high-yielding biomass with low lignin and cellulose contents, addressing the challenges encountered in second-generation biofuels production. Alternatively, metabolically engineered crop plants with lower lignin, high oil contents facilitate enhanced carbon capture capabilities, and improved cultivation, harvesting, and fermentation processes and can significantly enhance biofuels production (Dutta et al., 2014).

Introduction 
Tree-based biofuels, which are made from non-edible oilseeds of perennial trees, have emerged as a renewable energy source with considerable environmental and economic benefits. Unlike annual biofuel crops, tree-based biofuels have the potential for long-term yields, soil conservation benefits, and the ability to survive on marginal terrain (Dwivedi et al.,2011). Various tree species have been identified globally for their biofuel potential, with an emphasis on sustainability and low competition with food crops (Pandey et al., 2012). In India, there is a diverse range of over 100 tree species that produce seed oil suitable for biodiesel. These oil tree species can be cultivated on non-agricultural lands, ensuring that they do not compete with food and fodder production. Globally, tree-based biofuels are crucial for energy security. Palm, jatropha, pongamia, and mahua are among the feedstocks investigated by the US, Brazil, and Europe for biodiesel production. Tree-borne oilseeds (TBOs) are critical for biodiesel generation in India, which relies heavily on fossil fuel imports. India has implemented both the National Biofuel Policy (2009) and the National Agroforestry Policy (2014). The former policy aims to replace fossil fuels with biofuels, targeting a 5% replacement by 2012, 10% by 2017, and exceeding 10% beyond 2017. The latter policy focuses on integrated land use options for livelihood, environment, and energy security. Notably, important tree-borne oilseeds (TBOs) such as Jatropha, Karanj, Mahua, and Simarouba have been efficiently incorporated into agroforestry systems, yielding beneficial results and providing a significant source of non-edible oilseeds from trees. The need for alternatives to fossil fuels is particularly urgent for countries like India, which have a vibrant economy and high consumption of fossil fuels, heavily relying on imports. Biofuels, as renewable liquid fuels derived from biological sources, have proven to be promising substitutes for oil in the energy sector (Mahapatra et al.,2021). In India, the focus on biofuels is primarily on non-edible oils obtained from tree species’ seeds since oils from food crops like corn, sweet sorghum, and soybean cannot be diverted for biodiesel production (Raju et al., 2012). Tree-borne oilseeds (TBOs) are cultivated across the country in various agro-climatic conditions, including forest and non-forest areas, as well as wastelands, deserts, and hilly regions. India has a vast potential for oilseeds derived from trees, such as Mahua (Madhuca indica), Neem (Azadirachta indica),

Algae are organisms that grow in an aquatic environment and use light and carbon dioxide (CO2) to produce biomass. There are two categories of algae: macroalgae and microalgae. Macroalgae, measured in inches, are large multicellular algae that often grow in ponds. Macroalgae refers to thousands of macroscopic and multicellular seaweed species. The term includes some species of macroalgae such as Rhodophyta (red), Phaeophyta (brown), and Chlorophyta (green). Algae species such as kelp provide important breeding habitats for fisheries and other marine species, thereby protecting food sources; Other species such as plankton algae play an essential role in carbon sequestration and produce up to 90% of the Earth’s oxygen. Macroalgae, or large seaweeds, grow very rapidly and can reach extraordinary lengths up to 60 meters (McHugh, 2003). Their growth rates are much higher compared to many land plants. For example, wild brown algae can yield between 3.3 and 11.3 kg of dry biomass per square meter each year, and cultivated varieties can produce up to 13.1 kg in just seven months. In contrast, sugarcane, which is known for its high productivity, typically produces 6.1 to 9.5 kg of fresh biomass per square meter per year (Kraan. 2010). Additionally, macroalgae are available naturally in water bodies on a seasonal basis, and farming them in the ocean does not require traditional farming land or fertilizers. This makes them a promising option for addressing energy needs, as they are not only used for food and hydrocolloid extraction but also have potential for ethanol production. Humans have a long history of growing algae for uses such as food, food additives, feed, textiles and papers, bio-plastics. In recent years, seaweed farming has become a worldwide agricultural practice, providing food and feedstock for various chemical uses such as carrageenan, animal feed, biofertilizers and growth promoters. Due to its importance in marine ecology and carbon uptake, recent attention has focused on kelp farming as a potential climate change mitigation strategy for carbon dioxide biocapture, along with other benefits, such as reduced nutrient loads and increased habitat for coastal aquatic species, and reduced local ocean acidification in addition to biofuel opportunities. The seven most commonly cultivated algal taxa are Eucheuma spp., Kappaphycus alvarezii, Gracilaria spp., Saccharina japonica, Undaria pinnatifida, Pyropia spp. and Sargassum fusiform. Eucheuma and K. alvarezii are cultivated for carrageenan (a gelling agent); Gracilaria is grown for agar; while the rest is grown for food. Macroalgae production has become a cornerstone of global aquaculture, serving diverse industries such as food, biofuels, and pharmaceuticals

Microalgae have long been recognized as good potential sources for biofuel production due to their relatively high oil content and rapid biomass production (Schenk et al., 2008; Hu et al., 2008). These photosynthetic organisms thrive in a variety of aquatic habitats, including lakes, rivers, oceans, and even sewage, demonstrating their adaptability to diverse environmental conditions. They can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, salinities, and pH levels, as well as varying light intensities and aquatic or desert conditions. Additionally, microalgae can grow independently or in symbiosis with other organisms, making them highly versatile for various cultivation systems (Mutanda et al., 2011). Algae are generally grouped into three major categories: Rhodophyta (red algae), Phaeophyta (brown algae), and Chlorophyta (green algae), and are further classified by size into macroalgae and microalgae. Macroalgae are large, multicellular organisms visible to the naked eye, while microalgae consist of microscopic single cells that can be either prokaryotic, similar to cyanobacteria, or eukaryotic, similar to green algae (Fields et al., 2014; Maltsev & Maltseva, 2021). Microalgae are capable of producing a wide array of valuable bioproducts, including polysaccharides, lipids, pigments, proteins, vitamins, bioactive compounds, and antioxidants. They grow at a much faster rate compared to terrestrial crops and can be cultivated on non-agricultural land using non-potable saltwater or wastewater, reducing competition with food crops and ensuring sustainability (Lee et al., 2014). This has made microalgae an increasingly attractive alternative feedstock for biodiesel production, which relies heavily on the high lipid content of microalgae. The majority of these lipids are stored in the form of triacylglycerols, a type of oil that is ideal for biodiesel production. Beyond biodiesel, microalgae can also be utilized in various other energy production pathways. Some microalgal strains can produce hydrogen gas under specific growth conditions, while algal biomass can be combusted like wood or digested anaerobically to produce methane biogas, which can be used for heat and power generation. Additionally, algal biomass can be processed into crude bio-oil through pyrolysis, further expanding its applications as a renewable energy source (Mumtaz et al., 2019).

Cellulosic ethanol refers to the production of ethanol, an alcohol fuel, from cellulose found in plant fibers rather than from seeds or fruits. This biofuel can be derived from various sources such as grasses, wood, and other plants. The fibrous components of these plants are mostly from crop residues and other sources indigestible for animals, except for ruminants like cows and sheep, as well as hindgut fermenters like horses, rabbits, and rhinos. The interest in cellulosic ethanol stems from its potential economic value. Plant growth and cellulose formation serve as a mechanism to capture and store solar energy in a chemically stable manner, facilitating easy transport and storage of the resulting supplies. Moreover, the ability of grasses and trees to grow in temperate regions makes cellulosic ethanol commercially viable and offers a potential solution from non-food sources other than grain and tuber starch. This cellulosic ethanol development in the biofuel industry presents an opportunity to derive carbonaceous liquid fuels and petrochemicals, which are vital for our current standard of living, in a balanced and renewable manner by recycling carbon from the surface and atmosphere through any kind of plant orgin or any plant or tree species, Additionally, commercially viable cellulosic ethanol could mitigate the issue associated with conventional biofuels based on grains, which compete with food production and may lead to increased food prices. However, the production of cellulosic ethanol is currently economically feasible and has been implemented on a large scale in India. Several 2G ethanol plants are being developed by companies like Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL). Different types of biomass contain varying amounts of sugars, and the complexity of the biomass is determined by the structural and carbohydrate components. Plant biomass mainly consists of lignin (13.6-28.1%), cellulose (40.6-51.2%) and hemicellulose (28.5-37.2%), which serve as the raw materials for fuel production. The conversion of biomass into sugars is a crucial step in biofuel production. Therefore, selecting an appropriate pretreatment process based on the biomass type is essential to achieve optimal sugar yield with minimal energy input.
