Introduction

Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.; Family- Arecaceae) also known as Khajoor, Kharek is an ancient important fruit tree of semi-arid and arid regions of the world. It grows well under poor desertic soils due to its hardy plant characteristics and deep root system. It is also suitable fruit trees for growing under saline irrigation conditions. It is well known fact for date palm that its feet in the water and its head in sun. It requires dry hot climate for growth and development of fruits. In arid region, crop production is risky preposition, where date palm cultivation contributes in achieving food security, high nutritive value food, crop diversification, desertification control, higher income generation and foreign exchange earnings. It can be grown at such places where adequate irrigation facility is available besides other dry hot climate conditions (Chandra et al, 1992; Singh and Dhandar, 2007). Better returns from date plantation can be achieved through good management practices besides adequate marketing of produce. The quality produce and its marketing will help to increase the income from date palm cultivation.

Agriculture, the cornerstone of human civilization, is intrinsically linked to weather and climate. The success of crop production hinges significantly on the prevailing meteorological conditions, which dictate every stage of a plant’s life cycle, from germination and emergence to growth, flowering, and ultimately, yield. Understanding the intricate relationship between weather elements and specific crop requirements is paramount for maximizing agricultural productivity, ensuring food security, and developing resilient farming systems in the face of a changing climate. This chapter delves into the critical role that various weather parameters play in shaping crop performance. We will explore how factors such as temperature, precipitation (rainfall), sunlight (solar radiation, intensity, duration, and quality), humidity, and wind velocity interact to create the ideal environment for different crops. Remote sensing is emerged as an important application of science in all fields for collection of information from a far. This chapter describes the fundamental concepts of remote sensing, electromagnetic radiation (EMR), the interactions between EMR and earth surface features, satellites etc.

8.1 What is Remote Sensing?

Remote sensing is nothing but acquiring information about an object without touching the object itself. In other words, remote sensing is the acquisition of information about an object or phenomenon, without making physical contact with that object. In present era, the term generally refers to the use of aerial sensor technologies to detect and classify objects on the Earth by means of propagated signals. As remote sensing is obtaining information about objects without making physical contact with them, remote sensing can be described as ‘reconnaissance from a distance’, ‘teledetection’ or a form of the common phrase ‘look but don’t touch’.

Tea (Camellia sinensis) is one of the most important beverage crops in the World and the second most commonly drank liquid on earth after water. It has numerous medicinal benefits mainly due to its antibacterial and antioxidant properties. The major tea growing regions of the world are South-East Asia (India and Sri Lanka), Eastern and South Africa consisting of Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Mozambique. All these countries are producers of black tea. China and Japan are the major producers of green tea.

The intricate dance between life and its atmospheric surroundings has shaped every living organism on Earth. From the microscopic bacteria thriving in extreme environments to the complex physiological systems of humans and large animals, weather and climate are not merely backdrops but active, pervasive forces dictating survival, distribution, behavior, and health. Weather, representing the short-term atmospheric conditions we experience daily— temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind, and sunlight—directly influences immediate comfort, activity levels, and susceptibility to acute events. Climate, on the other hand, embodies the long-term patterns and averages of these atmospheric variables over decades or centuries, acting as a fundamental determinant of ecosystems, biodiversity, and the sustained well-being of populations. This chapter delves into the multifaceted ways in which these atmospheric phenomena exert their influence. We will explore how thermal conditions drive physiological responses, from metabolic rate adjustments and thermoregulation to the very limits of endurance in extreme heat and cold. Coffee is grown at higher elevation across the Western Ghats between 750 and 1200 m amsl. It requires a certain degree of shade for its better performance. The annual rainfall over the coffee growing tracts varies between 1400 and 2600mm, having uni/bi-model rainfall with prolonged dryspell from November to May. It is more so over North of the Western Ghats. The mean annual maximum temperature varies between 24 and 30⁰C while the minimum between 15 and 18⁰C. The difference between maximum and minimum temperatures (temperature range) varies between 5 and 16⁰C across the coffee tract. The ‘Monsooned Malabar Coffee’ is a specialty coffee produced from the erstwhile ‘Malabar Region’. It undergoes certain changes in physical and biochemical characters when the coffee beans are processed during the summer monsoon (June to September). It is processed at Mangalore, located in Coastal Karnataka. The processing location experiences heavy rainfall of more than 1000 mm in July, followed by 950 mm in June and 600 mm in August. Out of 3264 mm of annual rainfall, 2852 mm is received during the monsoon period. It accounts more than 80 per cent of annual rainfall. The maximum temperature during the monsooning varies between 28 and 30°C while night temperature revolves between 22 and 24°C. Being located in the tropics along the West Coast, the crop processing environment in terms of surface air temperature is relatively uniform and moderate with a characteristic feature of heavy clouds and continuous rainfall during the monsoon period.

Agroforestry is the science of designing and developing integrated self-sustainable land management system, which involves introduction or retention of woody components such as trees, shrubs along with agricultural crops including pasture/animals simultaneously or sequentially, on the same unit of land and at the same time, to meet the ecological as well as socio-economic needs of local people. A typical agroforestry system will allow economic and ecological interactions between woody and non-woody components and also increase, sustain and diversify the total land output. Agroforestry systems are very important for the area currently under agriculture, the number of people who depend on land for their livelihoods, and the need for integrating food production with environmental services (Garrity, 2004; Makundi and Sathaye 2004). Agroforestry provides a unique opportunity to combine the twin objectives of climate change adaptation and mitigation. Although agroforestry systems are not primarily designed for carbon sequestration, there are many recent studies that substantiate the evidence that agroforestry systems can play a majorrole in storing carbon in above ground biomass (Sathaye et al. 2001;

The basic methods for wastewater sewerage (collection, treatment, and disposal) are as follows:

Climate change is a deadliest hazard to life on Earth. Global temperature is rising due to greenhouse gas emissions from the usage of fossil fuels, this result in widespread agricultural and fisheries failure, the extinction of hundreds of thousands of species, and whole towns becoming uninhabitable (Lindwall, 2022). Rising global temperatures are severely killing humans and trees, forcing half of all species to move, worsening water-borne and respiratory ailments in people, and jeopardising millions’ food and water security (Isaacs-Thomas, 2022). Addressing these concerns necessitates a worldwide collaboration to minimise greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable behaviours. Climate change affects agriculture production, lowers crop nutritional value, and increases the frequency of extreme weather events. These interruptions jeopardise food production, availability, and access, especially in vulnerable countries. Microbes play an important role in soil health, nitrogen cycling, and ecosystem stability. They impact a variety of soil activities, such as organic matter breakdown, nutrient mobilisation, and plant growth stimulation. However, climate change poses a substantial danger to microbial communities, possibly changing their activities and altering ecosystem dynamics (Wang et al., 2022). Transitioning to a low-carbon economy requires a global effort. Mitigation strategies include enhancing energy efficiency, adopting renewable energy sources, electrifying industrial processes, implementing efficient transportation systems, and introducing carbon taxes or emissions markets.

Abstract

Landslides are the most common hazards in hilly regions. Rapid development and the resultant uncontrolled interactions with ecosystems are the major reasons for the landslides, besides the rainfall. So, the assessment of landslides hazard vulnerability is a prerequisite before making any developments related to settlements, hill resorts, hydropower projects and the related network of Ghat roads. The present study deals with the assessment of landslides in two different sites; Site-1 located in the Ghat section of Yercaud hills between 10/4 and 29/6 km stones in the southwestern slopes of Shevroy hills, Salem, and the Site-2 located in the Ghat road between Lower camp and Kumuli in Theni districts, Tamil Nadu. The Theni ghat road in the National Highway-220 is connecting Tamil Nadu with Kerala and is the lifeline for Sabarimala, Tekkadi and Munnar. Besides, a series of pan stacks conveying water from Periyar reservoir in Kerala to the power house located at Lower camp in Tamil Nadu also lie in this stretch of hills. Landslide vulnerability mapping was carried out in an area of 130sq.km in Site-1 and 6.7 sq.km in Site-2 by assigning numerical values to the causative factors of slope instability such as lithology, structure, slope morphometery, relative relief, land use and land cover, and ground water conditions following the BIS code No. 14496 (1998) for preparing landslide hazard zonation maps. The study in Yercaud hills revealed that out of 12 slope facets, facet 1 to 6, 9 and 12 fall under moderate landslide hazard zone whereas facets 7, 8, 10, and 11 fall under high hazard zone. The area falling in facets 3, 4 and 5 of Kumuli ghat section fall under high landslide hazard zone, the slope facets 1, 2, 9 and 10 fall in the moderate hazardous zone and other facets in low hazardous zone.

Introduction

Dry-land horticulture has immense potential in providing nutrition rich food, social security and eco-restoration for the inhabitants of desert or rainfed and tribal land-areas of the north-western parts of India. Most of the recent past advances in Indian Horticulture are with production technology for favorable agro-climate, however, the vast and diverse land-scape of hot desert, arid, semiarid and tribal area is yet not getting logical thought for resource based horticultural development. The native crop–plants both annual and perennial are equally playing vital role for food, fodder as well income especially in the hot arid and sem-arid areas of Rajasthan where animal husbandry is also an integral component of the farming system. The monsoon supported arid zone crop-plants are drought tolerant and even the harvest failure in kharif season/ conventional cropping is very high and it is estimated 50–60% in most of the years only because of uncertainty in rain’s pattern. Based on my research experience and SWOT analysis over 25 years, it is accomplished that this hot arid zone has excellent horticultural potential with wide and varied opportunities of crop production, utilization of resources and eco-restoration (Samadia, 2016).

Castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) is a species of annual and perennial flowering plant in the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae (USDA, 2016). It is the sole species in the monotypic genus, Ricinus, and subtribe, Ricininae. The evolution of castor and its relation to other species are currently being studied using modern genetic tools (Institute for Genome Sciences, 2009). Castor reproduces with a mixed pollination system that favors selfing by geitonogamy but can also be pollinated by wind (anemophily) or insects (entomophily) (Rizzardo et al.,2012). Native to the southeastern Mediterranean Basin, Eastern Africa, and India, castor is now widespread throughout tropical regions (Phillips & Rix, 2002). The plant is known for its seeds, which contain 40-60% oil, primarily composed of triglycerides such as ricinolein. However, the seeds also contain ricin, a watersoluble toxin present in lower concentrations throughout the plant. Ricinus communis exhibits significant variability in its growth habit and appearance, with cultivars selected for leaf and flower colours as well as oil production. Castor bean is a fast-growing shrub that can reach up to 12 meters in height, although it is not cold hardy. Its stems spherical, spiny seed capsules also vary in pigmentation. In some varieties, the fruit capsules are more attractive than the flowers. Ongoing research aims to better understand the plant’s evolution and its relationship to other species, while its unique characteristics and diverse uses make it an important subject of study. The monoecious castor plant bears unisexual male and female flowers in terminal panicle-like inflorescences (Fig :1). Male flowers are yellowish-green with creamy stamens, while fewer female flowers have prominent red stigmas (Oliver and Lee, 2010). The spiny capsule fruit contains large, oval, poisonous seeds with a caruncle that aids ant-mediated dispersal. Improving castor bean (Ricinus communis) cultivation for biodiesel production involves a combination of genetic, agronomic, and technological strategies aimed at enhancing yield, oil quality and sustainability. Genetic improvement focuses on developing high-yielding and disease-resistant varieties through traditional breeding, molecular techniques like marker-assisted selection (MAS), and advanced tools such as CRISPR-Cas9 for targeted gene editing. Efforts are directed at optimizing oil content, improving fatty acid profiles for biodiesel, and reducing toxins like ricin. Arid environs are delineated by extreme and harsh weather conditions due to excessive heat and inadequate, variable precipitation; however, contrasts in climate occur. These climatic disparities are the result of temperature variation, distribution and season of rainfall and the degree of aridity. Moreover, high evapo-transpiration, periodic droughts, low organic matter levels, different associations of vegetative cover and soil enhances the problems of these regions. In general, hot arid climates have excessive heat and strong prevailing winds, unhampered by obstacles on the ground and as result aeolian erosion is common with frequent seasonal drought occurrence (Sharma and Tewari 2005). These climatic limitations make very difficult place for the inhabitants to attain their livelihood. People of these areas have spent their life within these constraints for centuries. They have faced serious challenges due to lack of sufficient resources and very low productivity which has added to the vulnerability of the region.

Introduction

Harvesting and handling are the equally important activities as the entire production system as an individual activity. Therefore, proper harvesting and handling is essential to assure the farm income. There are various factors which directly affect the storage life of fruits and vegetables as below. The natural limits to the post -harvest life of all types of fresh produce are severely affected by other biological and environmental conditions.

Temperature: An increase in temperature causes an increase in the rate of natural respiration of all produce and food reserves and water content become depleted. The cooling of produce will extend shelf-life by slowing the rate of respiration.

Transpiration and water losses: High temperature, low humidity in the store and injuries to produce can greatly increase the loss of water from stored produce beyond that unavoidable lost from natural causes. Maximum storage life can be achieved by storing only undamaged produce at the lowest temperature tolerable by the crop and at the relative humidity appropriate for the produce.

Mechanical damage: Damage caused during harvesting and subsequent handling (i.e. injuries, impact bruising) increase the rate of deterioration of produce and renders it liable to attacks by decay organisms even under refrigerated storage. Mechanical damage to root crops will cause heavy losses owing to bacterial decay and must be remedied by curing the roots or tubers before storage. Curing is a wound –healing process.

Decay in storage: Decay of fresh produce during storage is mostly caused by the infection of mechanical injuries provoked by micro organisms, mostly bacteria and fungi. Furthermore, many fruits and vegetables are attacked by decay organisms which penetrate through natural openings or even through the intact skin. These infections may be established during the growth of the plant in the field but lie dormant until after harvest, often becoming visible only during storage or ripening.

Abstract

The state of Nagaland located in the northeastern part of the Indian subcontinent is also prone to landslides similar to the other north eastern states due to the softer lithologies, intense deformation and extensive anthropogenic activities. So in order to understand the landslide vulnerability and to evolve remedial measures, a 12 km stretch of the NH-2 from Kohima town in the south to Zhadima junction in the north was studied. The study comprises the preparation of landslide hazard zonation map using BIS method and detailed studies in six major landslides involving RMR, SMR and Kinematic analysis and also the suitable remedial measures for such landslide phenomenon.

Abstract

Due to fragile lithology belonging to Disang and Barail groups of the Cretaceous-Tertiary period, intensive structural deformation related to collision tectonics, extensive weathering and the anthropogenic activities in the form of slope cutting for the development and widening of roads lead to frequent landslides in the state of Manipur, India. In this connection, the road section between Tengnoupal and Sita has been studied to understand the landslides vulnerability and to evolve mitigation strategies. The study involved the Petrochemical analysis to elucidate the weathering potential of the rocks, kinematic analysis to understand the network of joints and the strain, slope stability analysis to prepare Land Hazard Zonation mapping and estimation of factors of safety in selected locations. On the basis of these studies, long & short term remedial measures were suggested to mitigate the landslide hazards.

India is endowed with a vast and rich diversity of natural resources particularly soil, water, climate and agro-biodiversity. To realize the optimum potential of the agricultural production system on a sustainable basis, there is a need to bestow a paramount importance in the arena of efficient management of natural resources. India with a geographical area of 329 M ha presently supports 17% of the world’s population on merely 2. 5% of world’s land area and 4% of world’s freshwater resources. India’s economy is predominantly agrarian in nature with about 72. 2% of its 1028 million population (census 2001) living in villages and about 54. 4% people (cultivators) directly depending on agriculture.

INTRODUCTION

India has varied agroclimatic conditions, which favour the cultivation of various horticultural crops. Based on the adaptability and system of cultivation, the horticulture can be grouped into four major class such as Temperate, Sub-tropical, Tropical and Arid. India has become the second largest producer of both fruits and vegetables with a total production of 46. 75 million tonnes of fruits from an area of 4. 56 million ha and 93. 16 million tonnes of vegetables from 6. 30 million ha (2003-2004). Besides, there is a tremendous scope for increasing the production of flowers, spices and condiments, plantation crops and medicinal and aromatic plants. Floriculture has emerged as a viable agribusiness. The commercial cultivation of flowers in open field conditions was much popular than protected cultivation in India. But, now- a-days, the protected cultivation has brought a great revolution in Indian floriculture and it helps for the quality production and export to earn sizeable amount of foreign exchange. India has approximately 350 ha under green house cultivation with export value of approximately Rs. 330 crores during 2003-04(APEDA). On the other hand, the prevailing climatic conditions in India are highly suitable for cultivation of the almost all spices from tropical black pepper to temperate saffron. The major spices are mainly grown in humid tropics like Western Ghats and NE States. Out of 21 agro-ecological sub regions in India, spices are grown in 14 different agro ecological sub regions. Fruits, vegetables, flowers spices and condiments, plantation crops and medicinal plants are widely distributed across the country, while plantation crops are restricted to a few regions.

Abstract

The coastal zones are very fragile owing to the reason that these form the junction between the continents and the oceans. Further the multivariate tectonic, fluvial, marine and aeolian processes, which vary independently in their degrees and duration in space and time, act in different permutations and combinations with each other and keep on constructing and destroying the landforms along the coasts. Again, as coastal zones are heavily populated; it adds further pressure on the coastal systems. The paper deals about the hierarchy of issues faced by the coastal zones like tectonic emergence and subsidence and it‘s impacts and the ways, means and needs for measuring the rate of such movements; marine regression and the need for the time series models on the land-ocean boundaries for drawing the sea level curve for India, the Quaternary deltas and the essentiality for understanding the mixture of fluvial and marine forces for the possible future forecasting models; back water modifications, the related issues and the demands for the sediment-chemo dynamics modelling; disaster vulnerabilities and mapping methodologies etc; all using the unexplored vistas of Geomatics technology. The concept has been explained by taking Tamilnadu coast as the reference region.

Introduction

The coastal zones are always fragile as these are formed by the tectonic, fluvial, marine and aeolian processes, which act independently in varying degrees and duration and occur cumulatively in different permutations and combinations along the different parts of the coasts. In addition to such inherent fragility, the coastal zones stand vulnerably exposed to various natural and anthropogenic disasters like seismicity and earth movements, tsunamis, floods, sea level rise, cyclones, coastal erosion etc. Further, owing to the enriched land and water resources, enjoyable eco systems and avenues for intra and intercontinental trades, more than 70% of the global population and the related infrastructure are clustered in the coastal zones. Hence the scientists from all over the world have started showing more attention towards the coastal regions (Ahmed, 1972). The advent of Geomatics technology comprising multi spectral and hyper spectral remote sensing, GIS, GPS, Interferometry, etc. have opened up exhaustive newer vistas in unfurling the hidden complexities of the coastal zones and to provide solutions. From amongst many, the remote sensing based studies carried out by Shailesh Nayak and his team (2004) have brought out many first time information to light about the Indian coasts. But still we will have to go a long way, as the global coasts in general and the Indian coasts in particular are confronted with a hierarchy of challenges and the Geomatics technology can provide answers for these challenging issues owing to its unique virtues. The paper narrates the unique issues of the Indian coasts and how effectively the geomatics technology can be used in solving them. This has been done by taking Tamil Nadu coast as the test area.
