Abstract

Though people belonging to different disciplines from the common citizen to top level administrators are familiar with cyclones, floods, earthquakes, landslides, droughts, etc., the tsunami which struck and devastated over 1000 km long Tamil Nadu coast was not only unexpected but also an unknown phenomenon for the people of this part of the region. The Government of Tamil Nadu, though faced with this disaster for the first time, has efficiently managed the crisis owing to clear policy directions from the top political executive of the government, the planned working of the ministers, the committed service rendered by the senior officials and the tireless efforts of district collectors and their supporting staff down the line. The immediate measures taken in search, rescue and relief operations are detailed in this paper. Also covered are the rehabilitation measures undertaken including those for orphaned children and unmarried girls and the steps adopted for the prevention of epidemics.

INTRODUCTION

India is traditionally vulnerable to natural disasters on account of its geo-climatic conditions. Floods, droughts, cyclones, earthquakes and landslides have been occurring regularly in some part of the country or the other. In Tamil Nadu, the unprecedented drought in 2002-03, followed by another drought of comparatively less severity in 2003-04 and the floods in the northern coastal districts in October-November, 2004 had kept the State machinery on constant alert. But the tsunami that struck the coastal districts on 26^th December, 2004 was an altogether new and nightmarish experience. It was a disaster, the like of which, had not been seen before. The suddenness and the ferocity with which the waves gushed into the habitations along the 1076 km long coast line, taking the people totally unaware, caused unprecedented damage, death and destruction and posed the greatest challenge to the State administration. However, the state faced the challenge successfully, thanks to the vision and commitment shown by the Government and the timely help rendered by a number of non-governmental organisations and groups.

Abstract

The paper deals with the roles played by the NGO’s in the relief and rescue phase of Dec, 2004 tsunami and the effective role played by NCRC -NGO Coordination and Research Centre - in the rehabilitation phase along Tamil Nadu coast by creating successful partnership with government and the public.

INTRODUCTION

The scale of the tsunami disaster was unprecedented and the response too was out of the ordinary. Tamil Nadu was the worst affected state in India with Nagapattinam district being the most affected with over 6000 lives lost, about 40,000 houses damaged or destroyed and 1.96 lakh people affected. Relief poured in from both government and non-governmental organizations, including the religious organizations, and the first few days witnessed heartwarming outpourings of help and support.

There were about 400 NGOs and an equal number of volunteers to help in the relief operations which included food, clothing, household utensils and bedding. With such a large scale of external support, mainly from organizations and people from outside Nagapattinam, it was not surprising that chaos and confusion marked the first few days of relief operations still. Based on the experience of some professionals experienced in disaster management, a coordination platform was created called the NGO Coordination Cell. This platform was managed by two NGOs, who had long standing field presence in Nagapattinam, viz., South Indian Federation of Fishermen Societies and SNEHA, with the mandate and support of the District Administration. The main role of this platform was to meet the field based requirements of all the relief camps with the resources and materials available with the NGOs and the Govt. The paper briefly deals with challenges faced by the NGO’s in relief and Rehabilitation of the historical Dec 2004, Tsunami.

Abstract

During natural disasters, mostly panic and curiosity lead to greater causalities. But the tsunami is such a disaster which no one have witnessed during their life time nor heard of from their ancestors. On 26, December 2004, tsunami has struck all of a sudden many South Asian coasts including the east coast of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh causing greater devastation and causalities. This historical event has taught us many lessons and the paper deals with some aspects related to tsunami from the citizen’s view point.

INTRODUCTION

The tsunami that ravaged the coasts of South India had left tell tale signs that affirm the need for early warning systems as well as well-planned mitigation measures for the benefit of the affected. Over the last 12 months, since the tsunami struck the east coast of India on 26 Dec. 2004, numerous seminars, discussions, programmes and project proposals have been deliberated on various aspects that deserve attention. Government agencies, self-help groups and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have done commendable post-tsunami work. All sections of the society have responded both emotionally and rationally to the event in an unprecedented manner. In retrospect, to the informed citizen – one who has heard about the event, read about it and discussed it with others, though not have had the ‘experience’ of the natural disaster by himself / herself - what do all these mean ? the tragedy and its aftermath. This paper documents the issues that a citizen would like to ponder over so as to understand the various dimensions of the post-tsunami activities and draw a few lessons that the tragedy had taught us. The major issues pertain to (i) the mechanisms (ii) the coastal vulnerability and the need for assessment (iii) mitigation strategies (iv) media exposition (v) communication networking and (vi) educational facilitation.

Abstract

Tsunami (2004), that struck the Tamil Nadu coast has left deep marks in the minds of the affected society. The interview conducted in the coastal villages of the tsunami affected Nagapattinam has brought out many salient societal issues like, loss of leadership, widow hood, debt grip, psychological depression etc, which warrant deeper look to bring them out from the syndrome.

INTRODUCTION

The damages caused by tsunami (2004) along the coastlines of most of the South Asian countries are indelible not only from the minds of the coastal population but also from the heart of the entire humanity. The worst affected in the disaster are the fishing community. Many of their mechanized and un-mechanized boats and catamarans were converted to useless debris and garbages by the heartless tsunami. When their settlements themselves were swallowed even with out chewing, nothing to talk about their fishing nets which were just blown off by the ferocious tsunami. In addition, the infrastructure facilities like roads, communication systems, water and power supply were also incalculably damaged. Next to fishermen community, the affected souls were the farmers whose cultivable lands were turned into marine wet lands with swimming and tossing fishes. The Indian subcontinent was facing such onslaughts of various natural disasters periodically but our morale always stood by our side prohibiting us declaring them as national calamities for getting international aids. Specifically in this case, the central and state governments, NGOs and Voluntary Organizations have risen phenomenally to help the affected who were in need. Despite best efforts taken to provide relief and rehabilitation to the affected people, the tsunami has seedled some societal issues / syndrome, which may take long years to settle; it may not settle too. The paper discusses some of such issues gulled out through the interview conducted amongst various cross sections of the affected community.

Abstract

Ennore is an industrial region having many industries on chemicals, fertilizers, refineries etc., discharging their effluents into the Buckingham canal. Present study focuses on the impact of tsunami on water quality of Buckingham Canal segment found to the north of Chennai city, Tamil Nadu, India, in addition to the human interferences. Water samples were collected from surface and near bottom at five locations covering about 20km stretch of the Buckingham Canal during high tide on the spring tide day before (December 2004) and after (January 2005) the mega tsunami. Various water quality parameters measured were pH, Temperature, Salinity, Dissolved Oxygen, Suspended Particulate Matter, Nutrients and Chlorophyll. The maximum depth observed in the canal was 2.5m in December, whereas a shallow depth of less than 0.5m was recorded in January. The water quality analyses confirmed the incursion of saline water (upto 32ppt) into the Canal. Not much variations were observed in Dissolved Oxygen and pH. Because of the organic pollution in the canal, the water was rich in nutrients before tsunami, whereas due to the large quantity of seawater invasion, dilution had occurred after tsunami. High turbidity was observed in January 2005 indicating the tsunami induced disturbance and resuspension of the sediments from sea bed.

Abstract

The mangrove wetlands form dynamic ecotones between land and sea. Mangrove wetlands are unique in terms of environment, plant and animal communities and their distribution is restricted in tropical and subtropical coastlines. They perform a number of protective and productive functions, which ensures ecological and livelihood security to the coastal communities. The role of mangroves in mitigating the impact of cyclones and storm surges is well known but only limited information is available on their role in reducing the impact of tsunami. The Pichavaram mangroves, located on the southeast coast of India in Tamil Nadu, which was hit by the 26 December 2004 tsunami, provided opportunities to understand the contribution of it in tsunami mitigation. Through a systematic field study, a comparative analysis was made on the impact of tsunami in a set of villages, one was protected by mangroves and the other lacks any vegetation surrounding it. These villages are located at more or less equal distance from the sea and situated at about same elevation. Assessment carried out with well defined indicators such as loss of lives due to forceful entry of tsunami water, damages to houses and types of houses, etc., shows that loss of lives and damage to houses were much less in the village surrounded by Pichavaram mangroves. Thus, Pichavaram mangrove wetland, which was restored with the participation of the local community, Tamil Nadu Forest Department and M.S.Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) during 1993-2004 provided great dividend during tsunami. This underlines the importance of strengthening the ecological foundation of the coastal zone with mangroves and other vegetation as one of the strategies for mitigating the impact of natural disasters in the coastal areas.

Abstract

Coral reefs, the marine representatives of tropical forests, coupled with the sea grasses contribute considerably to the coastal productivity. Damages to these ecosystems will immediately affect the fishery productivity of the region. Due to this, the long-term ecological impact of the recent tsunami will be a serious set back to the local, national and regional economy than the immediate losses. Andaman and Nicobar reefs represent the second largest coral reef formation next to the Great Barrier Reef and are also comparable to the coral reefs of Indonesia and Philippines in terms of diversity of species and associated floral and faunal components. The recent mega – subduction of the Indian plate below the Burmese micro – plate in Andaman – Sumatra region has not only deepened the southern and uplifted the northern group of Andaman – Nicobar islands but also created a disastrous tsunami on Dec 26, 2004. While such tectonic changes are expected to cause longterm changes in the coral reefs of Andaman, Nicobar group of islands, the tsunami has damaged the coral reefs instantaneously. However, the coral reefs of the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay are not much affected by the tsunami by virtue of their geographic position in the shadow region of Sri Lanka.

Abstract

The Car Nicobar Island is one of the several islands in Indian Ocean which was severally damaged by the Great tsunami on 26 December 2004. The great tsunami event caused massive devastation, in the form of loss of life and property in south and south East Asia. The objectives of the study are to assess the changes in the coastal features of the Car Nicobar Island using various indicators such as the tsunami height, run- up elevation, water flow direction, erosion, sand deposition and coastal subsidence. Andaman &Nicobar Islands are the summit of the submarine mountain range lying along the great tectonic suture zone extending from Eastern Himalaya to Sumatra and Lesser Sunda via Myanmar border and Arakan hills. The IRS P-6 satellite data has been found to be very useful in the present tsunami assessment studies. The digital analysis of the satellite data was done using the image processing software (ERDAS IMAGINE 8.4) and DTM to quantify the tsunami height (15 m), run up elevation (2-19 m), inundation (295-1203 m) and coastal responses. The settlements and coconut plantations have been severely damaged in the island, which were assessed using GIS analysis of the pre and post-tsunami satellite data.

Abstract

The seaquake on 26^th December 2004 with its epicenter at Sumatra triggered a tsunami, which had a major impact on South East Asian countries. During that incident, the average height of the tsunami wave was 7-10 m and the penetration of seawater was up to 1-1.5 km. The surface water resources meant for irrigation and other drinking purposes got affected by the ingress of seawater in many areas. The direct environmental impacts of the tsunami have more impact along the entire east coast and caused more damages in coastal systems. The physical and chemical perturbations caused in the coastal zone by the tidal waves are discussed. In order to assess the environmental impact on coastal system, it is suggested that significant physical and biogeochemical factors could be framed to quantify the problems.

Abstract

The damages caused by the tsunami surge of 26, December 2004 could not be recuperated. There is no second opinion for the above statement as attested by the consequences of tsunami surge on the coastal landforms, human lives, properties, biological assets, etc., The attempt made to evaluate the damages caused by the tsunami surge along the study area divulges various factors regarding the response of the coastal environment to this weird phenomenon. Kanyakumari district witnessed the tidal inundation of 50 – 450 m, the least along Colachel and the maximum in Kanyakumari and Muttom coasts. Run-up elevations were seen even up to 6 m in Manakudi and Colachel coasts. In major parts, the beaches of the study area had endured lofty erosion of beach sediments. High occurrence of Casualty was reported in the Coasts of Colachel, Kotilpadu, Manakudi and Azhikkal. Similarly, loss of man-made structures were also observed to be high along the Coast of Manakudi, Colachel, Kotilpadu, Azhikkal and Muttom. Costly articles like boats, fishing nets, etc., were also damaged in Kanyakumari, Pallam, Muttom, Kadiapatanam, Kesavanputhenthurai and Colachel. The quality of water has also been found to be affected with high level of pH and TDS in the coasts of Manakudi and Colachel. Such Colossal damages in the area is attributed to its geo-position exactly at the receiving point of the diverted tsunami surge by Sri Lanka. Bathymetry also seems to have played a crucial role in determining the intensity and angle of the seismic wave propagation in the area.

Abstract

Geomatics (Remote Sensing and GIS) based tsunami damage assessment was carried out for Nagapattinam coast as a part of All India Coordinated Programme of NRDMS, Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi. The paper discusses the methodology and the inferences made for Nagapattinam region, Sirkali block and north Poigainallur panchayat village, holistically for the former and as case studies for the latter two. The regional studies show that the coastal geomorphology has played a significant role in tutoring the tsunami inundation and the damages with beach, dunes, tidal flats, backwaters and rivers / streams facilitating the inundation of tsunami. The studies in Sirkali block show the similar role of geomorphology, but the damage assessment carried out for Water bodies, soil and ground water show appreciable damage to Aquifer in the form of saltwater mixing / intrusion due to tsunami. Detailed geospatial data bases were generated village wise too. On the basis of the studies, possible remedial strategies were also suggested.

Abstract

The tsunami has struck many coastal countries of South Asia on 26 December 2004 and caused greater devastation along Andaman - Nicobar and Indian coasts. In India, Tamil Nadu coast is worst affected in Kanyakumari, Nagapattinam and Cuddalore districts. Subsequently, damage assessment, in respect of natural and physical resources, was done using Remote Sensing and GIS in parts of Cuddalore and Pondicherry coasts. The structural damages were studied village wise and categorized as maximum, moderate and least affected areas. As far as the natural resources are concerned, the changes in geomorphology, land use/ land cover, soil and water have been studied. On the basis of the same, the risk maps were also generated in GIS environment.

Abstract

The recent tsunami occurred on 26^thDecember 2004, caused great devastation along the east coast of Tamil Nadu, India. As the said tsunami has caused colossal damages, the impact assessment has become essential for tsunami mitigation measures. In this context, the extent of tsunami inundation, loss of lives, property loss and damages to physical and natural resources have been assessed in the tsunami affected area between Ennore and Mahabalipuram along the east coast of Tamil Nadu.

IRS LISS III PAN merged satellite data and IKONOS data were used for mapping the pre-tsunami geomorphology and land cover conditions and IRS-P6 PAN merged satellite data were used to map the post – tsunami terrain conditions including the inundations. From the study it is inferred that wherever buildings and population are denser the loss is more. Hence, vertical expansion may be needed as an alternative or to supplement horizontal expansion. Bio-shield along coastal areas, involving raising of mangrove forests, planting of casurina, salicornia, palms, bamboo and other tree species and halophytes which can grow near the sea will serve as speed-breakers for the up rising waves.

Abstract

A large tsunami triggered due to a massive earthquake of 9.3M in the offshore of Sumatra on 26^th December 2004 created havoc in several countries of the Indian Ocean. The deadly tsunami waves lashed the towns adjoining the coastline of several countries including Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, India and Sri Lanka causing more than 1,50,000 deaths. The earthquake occurred along the plate boundary is marked by a subduction zone between the Indian plate and the Burmese micro plate. In Andhra Pradesh, six coastal Districts were affected and amongst them four south coastal districts experienced maximum damage. In the present study, Tuppalapalem (vagarru revenue village) of Vakadu mandal, Nellore District was selected as a case study for discussion in the article. The objective of the study was to make an inventory of the damages to the natural and physical resources, by preparing pre and post-tsunami maps on geomorphology, land use / land cover, tsunami inundation and finally the tsunami risk zonation map on 1:8,000 scale. In this process, water and soil samples of the affected regions were also collected and chemical analysis was carried out. The data on damages were collected using a specially formulated data sheet. High resolution IKONOS data of January 2000 and IRS data of January 2005 were used for the generation of respectively the pre and post-tsunami geomorphology and land use / land cover maps. Ground truth data were also incorporated in these thematic maps.

The study has revealed that the water in all the bore wells became brackish after tsunami. About 80 country boats, 40 fibre boats and nets were lost with an estimated loss of about one crore. The tidal waters damaged the bunds of the aqua-farms and deposited the transported sediments in them. The extensive casuarina plantations, were reduced by the onslaught of tsunami and the casuarina trees became brown due to their contact with tidal waters. From amongst the various geomorphic units mapped in the study area, the beach, spits, shoals, creeks, swales, palaeo creeks were inundated by tsunami where as beach ridges, dune complexes and stabilized sand dunes were not affected and hence inferred as barriers. Geomorphology, land use / land cover and the tsunami inundation maps, tsunami risk zonation map were prepared showing very high, high and moderate zones of tsunami risks. It is recommended to take up casuarina plantations extensively along the coast as a biowall, which will also provide employment to the local people. The shallow aquifers of the coastal environment were contaminated by the tidal waves. Hence, drinking water should be supplied through protected water supply schemes. As a part of the community development, proper awareness must be created through training and appraisal to the fisherman community to face such natural disasters. The coastal regulation zone act, which prohibits any construction activity within 500m of the high tide line, should be strictly enforced. Keeping in view of the experience, a holistic tsunami protection plan is needed to safe guard the Indian coasts.

Abstract

A very strong shallow focus submarine earthquake (of magnitude 9.0) occurred off the west coast of Sumatra Island due to the movement of Indian Plate and Burma Plate on 26th December 2004 at 06:18:53 IST. A vast area around its epicentre was rocked including Andaman and Nicobar Islands and parts of the eastern and western coasts of the Indian mainland. This earthquake had generated a global tsunami, which had also pounced on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the coasts of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala and caused severe damage to the coastal population and infrastructure. Considering the devastation of this tsunamigenic earthquake, the Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India has launched a coordinated programme for imparting S & T inputs with futuristic approach to support rehabilitation programme in the affected areas on a sustainable manner. The main objective of the programme is to generate geospatial databases on damages and risk zonation using pre and post-tsunami remote sensing (RS) data along with collateral attribute data in GIS platform. This paper speaks on the damage assessment (both natural / physical resources and human resources) caused by the earthquake and tsunami covering parts of Andaman Islands along with strategies for risk management and constraints and alternatives for micro level planning.

Abstract

The major subduction of the Indian plate and the related high magnitude earthquake (>9M) occurred in Sumatra region, triggered a major tsunami on 26, Dec 2004 which caused massive disasters in many coastal regions of South Asian countries including India, killing tens of thousands of life and causing property loss of several million rupees. Duly realizing the credentials of Geospatial / Geomatics technology and the expertise of NRDMS, an all India coordinated programme was conceived by NRDMS on tsunami disaster assessment and got it executed through six specialized institutions working on geomatics technology in the country. In the programme, the tsunami disaster in terms of natural, physical and human resources were assessed using geomatics technology and village wise digital databases were generated which will form a potential baseline information in coastal area.

Abstract

An unprecedented tsunami hit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the coasts of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Kerala on the 26^th of December 2004. The loss of life and property, though wide spread in all these areas, was very severe in thickly populated low lying coasts, such as Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu. Survey of India, in association with the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, New Delhi has taken-up the task of carrying out post-tsunami Mapping of the entire east coast of Tamil Nadu using Digital aerial stereo images acquired immediately after the tsunami. The project aims to generate ortho-rectified photographs on 1: 8000 scale, which are to be used for preparing damage assessment maps of the affected coastal areas. This paper discusses various issues related to Control Surveying, Digital Photogrammetry and Large Scale feature extraction that are involved in the mapping process in general and its credibility for tsunami damage assessment in particular.

Abstract

There are two distinct types of oscillations in global oceans, separated in their frequencies by the period of the pendulum day. One species is the gravity waves and the other is the rotational waves, associated with earth’s rotation. Both these species can be found in tidal records around islands as well as near coastlines. These two types of modes are usually found in the tsunami records on tide gauges. The tide gauge records as well as visual descriptions of the water levels during and after the occurrence of a tsunami clearly show the presence of these oscillations. During the tsunami of 26th December 2004 in the Indian Ocean, media reports suggested high water levels persisted around the Andaman and Nicobar Islands for several days. These persistent high water levels can be explained by invoking the existence of trapped and partially leaky modes on the shelves surrounding these islands.

INTRODUCTION

A tsunami is a natural phenomenon consisting of a series of waves generated when water in a lake or the sea is rapidly displaced on a massive scale. Earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions and large meteorite impacts all have the potential to generate a tsunami. The effects of a tsunami can range from unnoticeable phenomenon to large scale devastation.

The term “tsunami” is derived from the Japanese language meaning harbour (“tsu”) and wave (“nami”). The term was coined by fishermen who returned to port to find the area surrounding the harbour devastated, although they had not been aware of any wave on the high seas. A tsunami is not a sub-surface event in the deep ocean; it simply has a much smaller amplitude (wave heights) offshore, and a very long wavelength (often hundreds of kilometers long), which is why they generally pass unnoticed at sea, forming only a passing “hump” in the ocean.

Tsunamis were historically referred to as tidal waves because when they approach land they take on the characteristics of a violent onrushing tide rather than the sort of cresting waves that are formed by wind action upon the ocean (with which people are more familiar). However, since they are not actually related to tides the term is considered misleading and its usage is discouraged by oceanographers.

The world is head98ing towards a water crisis. Africa and West Asia are likely to be worst affected by water scarcity, but with increasing population, water may fall short even in the other parts of the world. According to the recent UN report, the supply of clean and fresh water is depleting at such an alarming rate in some regions, that within 30 years, about two third of population will suffer moderate to severe water stress.

In hydrogeomorphological context of social environment the water is an essential natural resource for sustaining life. The available water resources are under tremendous pressure due to increased demands. The time is not far when water, which is the free gift of nature, will become a scare commodity. Therefore, conservation and preservation of water resources are urgently required to be done at priority basis. Water management has always been practiced in our communities since ancient times. But such practices have faded away during the past few decades mainly due to lack awareness. Hydrogeologists feel that the water harvesting practices must be urgently implemented to overcome the problem of water crises. In India the Ministry of water Resources is endeavouring to make rainwater harvesting a part of every day life in villages and cities as a people’s movement. Hydrogeomorphological aspect of social environment include (a) Social - Cultural -Administrative Consideration (b) Education and Training in Hydrogeology for Professionals and Technicians (c) Education for Farmers and Women (d) Education for Masses. These are described as below:

Common groundwater investigations include necessary considerations of the system’s influx sources, flow regime, discharge points and geomorphological characteristics of the area. Often, hydrogeomorphological mapping of an area is required as to determine these characteristics. The primary data can be acquired from the survey of India toposheet map and the satellite images. The secondary data set includes the satellite imageries, the preparation of digital elevation model (DEM) and digitized precipitation maps.

The first step in the procedure of hydrogeomorphological mapping is to calculate the watershed/basin area, which serves as a mask to define the area of interest. The watershed/basin calculation relies on the digital elevation data and assumes that topographic aspect (dip direction of the cell surface) completely controls the extent to which surface flow emanating from each point in the study area can reach the low point in the valley. The calculation of the potential annual recharge of the aquifer combines techniques described above with data for recharge areas, DEM aspect, and precipitation. First, the catchment area of the recharge zones must be calculated in a process similar to the watershed analysis, returning the area associated with the catchment coded as “1”. A simple multiplication overlay with the precipitation data and the catchment areas yields a result giving the amount of precipitation for each catchment cell. Before using the precipitation data, we converted it to meters so as to keep units consistent. The precipitation amounts within the catchment area (i.e. each cell value) are to be summed, yielding the amount of water available for influx into the groundwater system. Finally precipitation per year data can be acquired.

Identifying surface areas of groundwater discharge is based on the observation that such areas provide a relatively constant source of moisture, which is readily exploited by vegetation in semi-arid region. Thus areas with year-round green vegetation are assumed to be indicators of discharge. The relative amount of vegetation in a scene can be estimated by calculating a vegetation index (Reddy et al, 1989 and Tucker 1979).

New techniques and approaches to groundwater studies are always in deep concern with the hydrogeomorphologists. The designing of new techniques or adapting existing techniques with better enhancement to solve practical problems in the study of groundwater are of central concern. One of the recent technical developments include the mathematical model of groundwater flow that has become the most widely used computer-based model in the groundwater industry. Techniques to identify and date recently recharged water that is useful in characterizing the susceptibility of hydrogeologic environments to contamination are utilized by various research groups all over the world.

Geophysical methods for determining the hydraulic properties of fractured rocks gained the importance in the hydrogeomorphic studies. Predicting the movement of water and contaminants through fractured rocks has been one of the most challenging problems in hydrogeomorphology. Besides conventional and above mentioned techniques the techniques discussed in this chapter are Remote Sensing, Geographical Informational system (GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS), Digital Elevation Model (DEM), Groundwater Information System (GWIS), Digital Surface Terrain Modelling (DSTM), Multicriteria evaluation (MCE) and Thermal Infra Red (TIR) Mapping and Microwave Data.

Water is a primary source of life and sustains all human activities such as domestic needs, agriculture, industries etc. The allocation and management of water resources is becoming a difficult task due to increasing demands, decreasing supply and diminishing quality. This calls for judicious use of water resources. The geomorphology describes the environment in which the hydrological processes operate. A strong mutual correlation exists between geomorphological variables and hydrological characteristics. Such relationship can be applied to both surface and groundwater regime. Thus the linking of geomorphological parameters with hydrological characteristics of the basin provides a simple way to understand the hydrogeomorphological behaviour of different basins and particularly of un-gauged basins.

During the last few years various applications of hydrogeomorphology with reference to the Geographic Information System (GIS) and various other techniques have emerged as an extensively effective tool for analyzing and prioritizing natural resource management alternatives. Because natural resource management problems are spatial in nature the GIS technology provides a tool for defining the extent of the problem, and facilitates the design and implementation of alternative management strategies. The GIS is used to estimate the hydrogeomorphological parameters of the watershed, which can be used in watershed planning and management at micro and macro levels. The results of the study can be utilized to infer the hydrological features like runoff potential, infiltration and groundwater recharge of the region. Some of the applications of hydrogeomorphological studies are described below:

The beginning of the 20^th century was heralded by methodological revolution in geomorphological studies brought in by Davis (1899). His classical model of geographical cycle defined by him ‘ as a period of time during which and uplifted landmass undergoes its transformation by the process of land sculpture ending into a low featureless plain (peneplain)’ dominated the geomorphological investigations all over the world throughout 1^st half of the 20^th century.

The statistical techniques by Horton (1932 and 1945) brought quantitative revolution in the field of geomorphology when he presented quantitative analysis of morphometric characteristics of fluvially originated drainage basin. Post 1950 geomorphology has undergone vast change in the methods and approaches to the study of landforms, conceptual framework, paradigm and thrust areas of study. The most outstanding contribution to the advancement of geomorphological knowledge in this period is the adoption of quantitative approach based on deductive scientific method to the study of landforms and processes at short spatial and temporal scales (Strahler, 1956 and Schumm, 1956).

Several attempts have been made in the world in past to classify large territories and landforms into morpho-units. Valuable contributions pertaining to landform analysis have been summarized below: Joerg (1914) subdivided North America into natural regions, Fenneman (1914) established physiographic boundaries and gave physiographic divisions of the United States, whereas Anderson (1941) gave physiographic divisions of Columbia plateau. Howard and Spock (1940) and Weaver (1965) presented the excellent ways of classification of the landforms while Wood and Snell (1960) applied the quantitative systems for the classification of the landforms. However, Linton (1951) and Hammond (1954 and 1965) gave techniques for mapping delineating small scale and large-scale landforms.

Geomorphometric analysis is the measurement of the threedimensional geometry of landforms and has traditionally been applied to watersheds, drainages, hill slopes, beaches, and other groupings of terrain features. In particular basin morphometric parameters have received a lot of attention from hydrologists and geomorphologists since watersheds (catchments) have been used for analysis of various physical ecosystem processes, including soil erosion, deposition, runoff, stream discharge, sediment yield, sedimentation of streams, irradiation by sunlight, evaporation, evapotranspiration, and nutrient distribution. The study of morphometric parameters, which include variables such as average basin slope, the basin elongation ratio, compactness ratio, basin relief and stream density. Some parameters, such as slope length or stream sinuosity, can be used to represent both basin and hill slope, or basin and stream channel properties.

The main task before geomorphologists is to use an ideal unit of the earth surface for the study of its landforms. The search for an ideal areal unit, within which the collection, processing, organization and interpretation of the data of the geometry of landform, particularly of erosional origin can be made has been the main aim of the geomorphologists right from Fennemen (1914), Horton (1932 and 1945), Strahler (1956 and 1957), Miller (1953), Chorley (1957), Schumm (1956), Shreve (1966), Singh (1981), Sarkar (1995), Schumm and Spitz (1996), Sharma and Amin (1996), Iqbaluddin et al (1997) and Raj et al (1999).

Application of the principal of geomorphology provides information, which will be of value in predicating the geometry of aquifers. On weathering and erosion, many geological formations develop landforms that are distinctive in respect of slope continuity of outcrops and symmetry of valley flanks. The surface topographic features of bedrocks can some times be extrapolated to reasonable depths to predict the thickness of alluvium or aeolian sands occurring as valley fill deposits, by treating slope profile as mathematical curves for which equations similar to regression equations can be found (Doornkamp and King, 1971).

The influence of tectonic movements and resultant structural features on landform is of paramount importance for hydrogeomorphologists. The control of structure on landforms and hydrogeological processes are being discussed here. The structural geology concerns with the features such as uniclinal or inclined beds, folds, faults and joints. Of these the structural features like faults, fractures, joints etc appear as linear feature.

Linear features on the surface of the earth have attracted the attention of geologists for over one hundred years. This interest has grown most rapidly since the introduction of aerial photographs into geological studies. Geologists have recently proven that various structural features perceived in remotely sensed images are reliable indicators of geologic resources (Caran et al, 1982). These structures have been used in many applications: petroleum and mineral exploration (Blanchet, 1957); nuclear energy facility siting (Seay, 1979); geothermal assessments (Woodruff et al, 1982); and water resource investigations (Lattman and Parizek, 1964). Lattman and Parizek (1964) established a relationship between the occurrence of groundwater and fracture traces for carbonate aquifers, and in particular zones of localized weathering and increased permeability and porosity underlying these structures.

Groundwater exists at many places beneath the surface of the earth. It is normally hidden from view but, on occasion, can be seen flowing from springs and wells or seeping into tunnels. Certain properties of the various geologic materials control the ability of groundwater to enter into, move through, be stored in, or be extracted from the ground. Therefore, an understanding of geology is necessary in order to gain an understanding of groundwater found within a particular area of investigation. A basic part of the study of the geology of an area includes the preparation of a map showing surfacial exposures of each rock type. Interpretation of the map facilitates the study of the underground configuration, characteristics, and physical properties of these materials. This, in turn, enables the evaluation of groundwater storage, movement, and yield, as well as the identification of areas of ground water quality problems, recharge, and extraction.

The fundamental unit of a geologic study is the geologic formation. A formation has been defined as any assemblage of rocks, which have some character in common, whether of origin, age, or composition. In this sense, the term “rock” is defined as any naturally occurring part of the earth’s crust, made up of aggregate of minerals and includes hard, dense granite, lava ash, clay, sand, and even loose-uncohesive soil.

An aquifer is a geologic formation, a part of a formation, or a group of formations that will yield water. The quantity of ground water that an aquifer will yield to wells depends partly on its thickness, extent, continuity, and homogeneity, and partly on its physical properties of permeability and porosity.

Groundwater is stored in subsurface void spaces below the water table. The geologic material that stores, transmits, and yields groundwater to wells and springs are called aquifers. The key word here is yields. To be an aquifer, it must store and transmit water at rates fast enough to supply reasonable amounts to wells and springs. Therefore, not all groundwater is stored in an aquifer. Productive aquifers can be comprised of sand and gravel, sandstone, limestone and dolomite, or basalt flows, whereas fractured igneous or metamorphic rocks are only marginal aquifers.

The classifications of aquifer are given below:

Surface Water Resources

Surface water is a general term describing any water body which is found flowing or standing on the surface, such as streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and reservoirs. Surface water originates from various combinations of sources:

1. Direct precipitation - rainfall which falls directly in the surface water body;
2. Surface runoff - rainfall which has fallen onto the surrounding land and that flows directly over the surface into the water body;
3. Interflow - excess soil moisture which is constantly draining into water body; and
4. Water table discharge - where there is an aquifer below the water body and the water table is high enough, the water will discharge directly from the aquifer into the water body.

The quality and quantity of surface water depends on a combination of climate and geological factors. The recent pattern of rainfall, for example, is important in enclosed water bodies such as lakes and reservoirs where water is collected over a long period and stored. The water storage in streams and rivers is in a constant stage of movement and depend on the weather conditions.

Present day hydrogeomorphological research is the explanation of landscape and landforms: what they are, how they function and have developed with reference to the hydrological conditions. Research is a much more complex undertaking than giving names to landforms or even the study of processes, both in terms of what we mean by process and how explanations are approached. It is worthwhile examining some reasons for this, as it shows the increasing complexity of the subject and lead to ideas of how hydrogeomorphology can be studied. Here are some of the fundamentals required for hydrogeomorphological studies:

Mechanism and Processes

‘Mechanism’ provides explanations in detail by describing physical or chemical effects. ‘Process’ signifies the integration of mechanisms in time. Thus, for example when we talk about ‘fluvial process’ or, more specifically, about the ‘mechanism of saltation’, then we have to discuss about the energy source and processes of carrying the material. A process can thus be viewed as the simultaneous operation of a set of specific mechanisms over a specific time period.

The term hydrogeomorphology can be divided into three terms hydro- means water including both surface and groundwater; geo- means the earth and morphology- is the surface expression of the features in the form of landforms. This means that the hydrogeomorphology is dealing with the aspects of water, rocks and earth’s morphological features (land). Of these water and land are most important natural resources for human beings.

Water is synonymous with life. This is a natural resource and an absolute necessity for the survival of the living beings. Human beings have an organic relationship with water. For living and livelihood, human beings solely depend upon the availability of water. They have an inalienable right on water. This is a community resource and cannot be made a tradable commodity, violating normative law of nature. Water is among the most precious gifts of nature to mankind. Most of the ancient towns of the world grew on the banks of the river, and some of the ancient civilizations are known by the names of rivers. Rivers have always been important sources of drinking water and the means of sustaining human, animal and plant life. Whenever one is dealing with water resources development and utilization, it has to be kept in mind that not only quantity of water but also quality of water is very important. The well being and development of our society is dependent on the availability of water.

Abstract

The recent disastrous tsunami of December 26, 2004 has not only alarmed the administrative and the planning machinery to have tsunami mitigation strategies for India. But also signalled the geoscientists to have a deeper look on the phenomenon of tsunami and the vulnerabilities of the Indian coasts. In this context, the authors have conducted a study primarily to evaluate the responses of the coastal Geosystems to the tsunami inundation, as it is a very vital component in f raming strategies for mitigating the effect of tsunami. The study has revealed that the central coastal parts of Tamil Nadu, namely Cuddalore – Nagapattinam districts, which were worst affected by the recent tsunami, expose a combination of landforms of tectonic, fluvial, fluvio – marine and marine processes. These different landforms have responded differently to the recent tsunami viz: as facilitators, carriers, accommodators, absorbers, barriers etc. on the basis of the same, different eco – friendly, cost effective and result oriented methods are suggested to mitigate the effects of tsunamis.

Introduction

Tsunami is an unfamiliar term and also a scantily referred term in the dictionaries in India till December 26, 2004. Even the students of geosciences were all along been taught about the origin and impact of tsunamis by citing examples from the Pacific Ocean. But the term tsunami has now become a widely known and a commonly deliberated phenomenon in India amongst various cross sections of the society irrespective of age and literacy. Abstract

Landslides have become a fast spreading epidemic in the mountain belts around the world. As both the natural geosystem and the triggering parameters this phenomenon, the scientists & technocrats from all over the world have started studying it using varying parameters and multivariate advanced scientific tools. In this connection the present study lays an emphasis on the need for giving deserving importance to one of the important geosystem parameters, namely the geomorphology in Landslide Vulnerability Mapping. The same has been accomplished by taking the Nilgiri Mountains of Western Ghats, South India as the test site.

Introduction

Landslides are the most commonly witnessed geohazards in mountainous systems of all over the world causing greater and recurring loss to Man, his properties and to his various developmental programmes. As these landslides mostly occur after heavy rainfalls, it was considered as the most important triggering parameter for the landslides. In indian subcontinent, the landslides of Himalayan region while were inferred to be predominately due to Active tectonics (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10) landslides of Westernghats of Maharastra were explained to be the effect of extensive weathering and the rock falls from the cliff and the summit zone (11,12) but in contrast, the landslides of Nilgiri mountains have been attributed to deforestation, direct entry of rain water into the soil system and the resultant pore pressure increase (13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21) but the studies carried out (22) in the Nilgiri Mountains indicated that various geosystem parameters viz: Lithology, Structure, Geomorphology, Slope etc., occur in various permutations and combinations and assign different landslide vulnerability grades to the land systems and when such vulnerable zones are interfered by the triggering parameters, the landslides occur.

Abstract

Landslides have become a recurring phenomenon in most of the mountainous regions of the world. In Indian peninsular, the landslides which were mostly confined to the tectonically active Himalayan Mountains once, have started spreading over to the other mountain belts of the Peninsula. The Tirumala – Tirupati hills, which is drawing millions of pilgrims from all over the world is facing landslides especially along the newly built southern uphill Ghat Road. The geology of the area, studied using geomatics tools like Remote Sensing, SRTM based Digital Elevation Models, GPS Survey, etc., showed that Tirumala hills is under the grip of upward tectonic movement as evidenced from the N-S and E–W oriented Pleistocene faults, intensely dissected Plateau top Cuddapah Quartzites, retreating escarpments, exhaustive debris slopes, extensive valley fills along the slopes, colluvial fills in lower slopes, palaeo debris flows along the southern and western obsequent slopes of the Tirumala hills etc. All these indicate the inherent landslide vulnerability of the slopes. The E-W trending dykes which are piercing the slopes and standing as ridges add further landslide vulnerability to such fragile slopes. So, the new ghat road laid along such southern slope is obviously facing landslides. However, the detailed geomatics based studies show that the dykes, valley fills and steep slopes are particularly more vulnerable to landslides. Though remedial measures have been broadly evolved, abandoning the southern uphill new ghat road and widening the older northern downhill ghat road seems to be the better and long term feasible alternative to prevent Landslides.

Abstract

Indian Peninsular shield has been thought as tectonically inert and aseismic for many years by the Geoscientists. But, subsequent to the disastrous earthquakes in Killari, Jabalpur and Kutch, studies have been initiated in multiple directions on various aspects of seismicities. The present study is aimed at bringing out a possible picture on the seismic vulnerability of parts of Westernghats of Tamil Nadu using various tectano geomorphic anomalies like unifrequency lineaments and different levels of dissection of plateaus, denudational geomorphic anomalies like anomalous talus materials and fluvial geomorphic anomalies like radial drainages, compressed meanders, eyed drainages and wider flood plains interpreted from the raw and digitally processed Landsat TM and IRS P6 LISS-III satellite datasets. The subsequent generation of individual GIS layers on these anomalies and their integration revealed that the N-S faults are tectonically active and the NE-SW and NNE-SSW faults are active faults. Many earthquake epicenters were also found to fall along these lineaments / faults.

Introduction

The Indian peninsular shield, exposing the Archaeozoie - Proterozoic piles of rocks, is known for its tectonic inertness and the related land stability. Owing to such shield area character, the geoscientists were also having strong convictions for a long time that seismically the area is safe.

Abstract

The coastal regions are always tectonically active since these form the junction between the continental and oceanic plates. These tectonic activities and the resultantly tutored fluvial and marine geomorphic processes and the independent fluvial and marine geomorphic processes carve out the coastal morphology. And if these coastal geomorphic features are studied, it will lead to the understanding of the morphotechtonics. One such a study carried out for a part of Ganjam coast, revealed various geomorphic anomalies viz: presence of high order hill ranges only in the north eastern and south western parts of the area with the central plain, northerly migrating Ganjam river, development of wide beach ridges only along the central plain, all indicating the Late Quaternary upliftment of the central plain.

Introduction

The Indian subcontinent is vested with nearly 9,000km long coastline both in its eastern and the western continental margins. These coasts provide unique configuration with convexities (land protruding into the coast), concavities (vice-versa), deltas of different morphologies, beach ridges and swales, bay mouth bars, peaks, serrations and projections in the shorelines, all indicating the vibrant tectonic, fluvial, marine and aeolian processes. As the coastal zones in general, form the boundaries between the continental and oceanic plate margins, these are inherent weak zones prone to tectonic activities, which in conjunction with other geomorphic processes, provide unique architecture to the coasts with above varied geomorphic features. That too, the Indian coasts were inferred to stand as testimony to the vibrant tectonic activities and other related geodynamic processes of the Quaternary period (Ramasamy, 1989; Ramasamy, 1999).

Abstract

The frequently recurring earth tremors / Seismicities in parts of Tamil Nadu & Kerala and the earthquakes of higher magnitude in Central India in the recent years have gradually dissolved the concept of shield area stability for the South India and the concept of mid-plate seismicity has emerged in the minds of geoscientists, Hence, the geoscientists have embarked into a number of studies to bringout seismotectonic maps for South India. In this context, a detailed studies have been carried out by the authors in parts of westernghats (Kodaikkanal and Varushanad hills) in Tamil Nadu. In the said study lineaments were interpreted using high resolution IRS satellite data and from the lineament pattern, isofracture, lineament density and lineament interaction intensity the strain maxima axes were drawn. Such strain maximas were observed to fall in N- S, E – W and NE –SW directions. These strain maximas were found to coincide with various drainage anomalies, like radial, compressed meandering and eyed drainages indicating that these lineaments are prone for seismicity/ earth tremors.

Abstract

Being the junction between the continental and the oceanic plates, the coastal zones are always tectonically alert and hence vested with number of aults. The study of LANDSAT ETM FCC imagery revealed one such a major fault along NNE-SSW aligned Tamil Nadu coast from Chennai in the North northeast to Cape Comorin in the South southwest. This Precambrian boundary fault shows signs of repetitive reactivation during Gondwana, Tertiary and Late Holocene periods. While in former two periods it shows indications of faulting, in the latter period, it is manifested in the form of drainage deflections indicating sinistral movements of beds. While such sinistral morphology of the fault seems to be related to the Post collision compression, the seismicities in and in its close proximities indicate the seismic significance of this fault. In the context of natural resources and disasters viz: geothermal springs, flooding and seismicities, this fault demands deeper studies.

Introduction

The coastal regions in general form the junction between the continental and oceanic plates. Hence, the coastal regions are always tectonically active and thus vested with coast parallel, tangential and conjugate faults depending upon the tectonic history of the area. In the Indian subcontinent too, all along the 9000 km long east and west coast margins, number of major faults were mapped by the earlier workers. Significantly, Vardarajan and Ganju (1989) have brought out a comprehensive picture on the lineaments of the entire coastal zone of India using Landsat images. Vemban et al. (1977) earlier inferred faults along certain segments of east coast of Tamil Nadu and observed them to be lithological contacts and also seismogenic in nature. Raiverman et al. (1966) have again inferred earlier a N-S curvilinear fault in Thanjavur deltaic region and attributed it to post drift kinematics of the Indian plate. Ramasamy (1989) has brought out the morphotectonic and morphodynamic model of the east and west coasts of India on the basis of tectonic and geomorphic signatures using Landsat satellite images. Ramasamy (2006) developed a first time comprehensive model on the active tectonics of the Indian Peninsular and in which he brought out detailed information on the varied geomorphic, tectonic and hydrological anomalies and inferred them to be related to the whirling and fracturing of the Indian plate due to the still prevailing N–S to NNE – SSw compressive force which originally drifted the Indian plate to the present position after the breakup of the Gondwana land.

Abstract

The drainage pattern and the architecture are the reflections of not only the tectono fabric of a region, but also the active tectonic processes. From amongst many drainage patterns and anomalies, the eyed drainages, deflected drainages and the compressed meanders interpreted from satellite images for Pudukkottai region of Southern Tamil Nadu infer to reflect the active N-S block faults and NE-SW sinistral and NW-SE dextral faults related to post collision tectonic phenomena.

Introduction

The Geoscientists have long back recognized that the drainages are the reflections of the surface and subsurface lithology, structure and tectano fabric and also the active tectonic movements especially of the Quaternary period (Thornbury, 1985). Hence, the Geoscientists have all along been showing greater interest in mapping the drainage patterns. However, the mapping of the drainage patterns and detection of tectonic features there from have gained greater momentum only after the advent of modern Remote Sensing technology. Since the airborne and satellite borne spectral images have the credentials of showing the drainage pattern, the drainage anomalies and the tectonic features related to them all of which were studied in conjunction to bring out information on the geological history of the Quaternary period by many workers (Vaidyanadhan, 1971; Murthy and Sastri, 1981; Agarwal and Mitra, 1991; Ramasamy, 1991; Saravanavel and Ramasamy, 2014).

Abstract

The Cauvery delta is a major bird-foot shaped delta with its apex located east of Tiruchirappalli with the mother channel Cauvery flowing along Thanjavur– Kumbakonam – Kaveripoompattinam. The distributary drainages are radiating over an arc towards east from its apex with a fan shape and finally debouch into the sea from south of Tiruthuraipoondi in the south to Kaveripoompattinam in the north. All these distributary drainages are now seen as palaeochannels including the mother channel Cauvery, which is now called as “Palam Cauvery”. The present day flow of Cauvery river is confined to the northernmost rim of the delta as river Coleroon. On the basis of the archaeological, epigraphic and historical data analysed earlier and the14C dating carried out recently, the present authors infer that the age of the delta may vary from 2300 Y.B.P. ( Years Before Present) to 750 Y.B.P. and the age of the palaeochannels are also younging from 2300 Y.B.P. in the south to 750 Y.B.P. in the north. In the southern part of the Cauvery delta, the Mio-Pliocene Sandstone of Pattukottai-Mannargudi area is undergoing upliftment along N-S faults. On the basis of the rapid land progradation during 6085±233 Y.B.P. - 1020±80 Y.B.P. in Vedaranniyam coast, it is visualized that the Mio-Pliocene Sandstone must be undergoing upliftment significantly since 6100 Y.B.P. onwards. On the basis of the occurrence of older palaeochannels in the south, the gradual younging palaeochannels towards the north and the land emergence in the south of the Cauvery delta in Pattukottai – Mannargudi area, it is concluded that the distributary drainages of river Cauvery would have become sequentially defunct / shifted from south to north and finally the mother channel Cauvery also would have been pushed towards north to reach the present tract of Coleroon river. The thinner palaeochannels in the south and the gradual wider palaeochannels in the north of the delta further indicate that as the land was already undergoing emergence in the south even before river Cauvery has entered into Thanjavur plains, the river could not comfortably spread its distributaries in the south. Hence, the southern distributaries, after a brief flow, would have started drying sequentially from south to north during 2300–750 Y.B.P. thereby the floodwater of each of the southern distributary channel would have been pushed to its successive northern counterpart, i.e. the southern distributary (say 1), pushing its water to its immediate northern counterpart (say 2), then the combined flow of 1 and 2 pushing the water to 3 and so on. The anomalous eyed drainage and its modifications during the last 50–60 years and compressed meanders in Coleroon river, deflected drainages in Palam Cauvery, truncation and punctuation of beach ridges by the E – W faults along the N – S coast and such faults acting as pathways for the sub parallel creeks indicate vibrant Late Holocene geological history predominated by the tectonic movements in Cauvery delta.

Abstract

Overall geological histories of the Quaternary deltas of all over the world have been studied considerably, to understand the evolution, eustatic – isostatic changes, land – ocean interactive phenomenon, resources, environment etc. But tectonic signatures of these deltas have been less studied, though these have significance in understanding the natural resources, environment and evaluation of natural disasters. In this context, as the state of Tamil Nadu is a low easterly gradient plain, all the easterly flowing rivers have developed well evolved geomorphic features related to youthful, mature and old stages. Such old stages of the rivers are marked by the spectacular development of deltas. These deltas of Tamil Nadu have been studied in detail for understanding the tectonics with the help of visibly seen tectonic and geomorphic features in satellite based remote sensing and ground based data sets. The study has revealed that the upper age limit / ages of these deltas are probably of Middle to Late Holocene and the various tectonic and geomorphic anomalies observed in these deltas obviously indicate the tectonic processes/ phenomena that prevailed during Middle Holocene - till date. The Proto Cauvery delta of Chennai region is witnessing ongoing NE–SW sinistral, NW–SE dextral and E–W vertical tectonic activities. The streams in Ponnaiyar delta are showing persistent southerly migration due to the probable ongoing land subsidence along NE–SW faults in the southern part of the delta. The Cauvery river which has originally developed a broad bird-foot shaped – arcuate delta, has undergone a phase of anticlockwise rotational migration and stabilized in the northern rim of the delta as Coleroon river during 2300–750 Y.B.P. due to the ongoing tectonic emergence in the south of the delta almost since the last 6000 years or so. The Vellar river, in deltaic regime, shows northerly migration due to E–W grabening in the northern part of the delta. Vaigai and Manimuttar rivers are again migrating northerly in their deltaic regions due to the probable land arching to the south of their present day flow. Thus, the paper discusses the post deltaic / Middle -Late Holocene geological processes of Tamil Nadu deltas which are predominated by tectonic activities.

Abstract

Visualisation of geological process raises special issues for scientists and animators. The degree of physical movement of a rising arch or along a fault line may be very small compared to the normal terrain variation. Over a long time period the major changes in the environment may come from the more substantial surface manifestations of changing draining regimes. In Tamil Nadu State in South-Eastern India there are continuing tectonic movements arising from the collision of the subcontinent with the greater Asian land mass. Over comparatively recent times (7000 years) these movements have had a major impact on drainage and other hydrological outcomes. The Cauvery River in particular has migrated several hundred kilometers over this period. A mosaic was made from recent satellite imagery and then manipulated to create surface textures for dates between -7000 years and +1000 years. Changes in the terrain surface, such as rising arch structures and descending grabens, have been modelled and animated. The combination of terrain movement and surface change provides a visual history of the period.

The continued northward movement (5±6 mm per year) of the subcontinental land mass of India induces substantial tectonic pressures all over India. In the southeast, primarily within Tamil Nadu, there is significant differential movement, both vertical and horizontal, of portions of the existing land mass. This is producing a number of effects:

Drainages have characteristic pattern and life histories with youthful stage in hilly areas, mature stage in plains and old stage in the coastal zones. The deviations from their normal life histories, especially aberrations in their flow pattern in the form of various drainage anomalies have been inferred to be the indications of dominantly the Eustatic and Isostatic changes. This, especially after the advent of Earth Observing Satellites, has attracted the geoscientists from all over the world, for studying such drainage anomalies. In this connection, a study has been undertaken in parts of South India falling south of 14° south latitude to comprehensively map some drainage anomalies like deflected drainages, eyed drainages and compressed meanders and to evolve the tectonic scenario therefrom. The mapping of such mega drainage anomalies and the related lineaments/faults from the satellite digital data and the integration of such lineaments/faults with the overall lineament map of South India showed that the study area is marked by active N–S block faults and NE–SW sinistral and NW–SE dextral strike slip faults. Such an architecture of active tectonic grains indicates that the northerly directed compressive force which has originally drifted the Indian plate towards northerly is still active and deforming the Indian plate.

Introduction

Rivers have characteristic pattern and life histories with (1) short and straight drainages performing only erosion in the hilly catchments, (2) meandering and sinuous paths doing both erosion and deposition in the plains and (3) Brownian pattern of movement doing only dumping of sediments and building up of deltas in the coastal zones. Such characteristic life history of the rivers with youthful stage in the hills, mature stage in the plains and the old stage in the coastal zones in general are controlled by the base level of erosion or Mean Sea Level (Thornbury, 1985). But, the rock types and the geological structures of the terrain related to palaeo, time transgressive and ongoing tectonism too significantly control the drainage pattern and the related river flow dynamics in all these three stages. Hence, geoscientists from all over the world have all along been showing greater interest in understanding the drainage architecture in general and their anomalies in particular. That too, after the advent of Earth Observing Satellite technology, mapping of drainage pattern and their anomalies like dentritic, semi dentritic, trellis, parallel, annular, radial, deflected, pirated, avulted, eyed, compressed, preferentially migrated and other drainage anomalies have gained greater momentum, since, besides lithology, tectonics and sea level changes, these drainage anomalies have the credibility of providing information on the flood histories, seismic vulnerability, past climates and anthropogenic phenomenon too (Chitale, 1970; Chen and Stanley, 1995; Lillesand, 1989; Matmon et al., 1999; Miller, 1937; Reid, 1992; Saintot et al., 1999; Smith et al., 1997; Twidale, 2004; Thornbury, 1985 and many others). In different parts of the Indian sub-continent too, studies have been carried out on the drainage anomalies using topographic sheets, black and white panchromatic aerial photographs and orbital multimode and multispectral satellite data, to elucidate the structural fabric, tectonic processes, climatological and other phenomenon of especially the Quaternary period (Amalkar, 1988; Babu, 1975; Bakliwal and Sharma, 1980; Barooah and Bhattacharya, 1989; Mitra et al., 2005; Murty and Mishra, 1981; Narasimhan, 1990; Oldham et al., 1901; Philip et al., 1989; Rajaguru and Kale, 1985; Ramasamy, 1991, 2006; Ramasamy and Kumanan, 2000; Ramasamy et al., 1987, 1991, 2006; Singh et al., 1996; Sood et al., 1982; Thirunaranan, 1938; Vaidyanadhan, 1971; Yashpal et al., 1980).

Abstract

The Indian Peninsula in general and its southern part in particular has been thought to be a stable shield area and hence inert to younger earth movements and seismicities. However, in addition to fast relapsing seismicities, the studies carried out by earlier workers during the past three decades indicate possible pulsatory tectonism, at least since the Jurassics. The present study is a newer attempt to identify, analyse, and spatially amalgamate a large number of anomalies visibly displayed by the tectonic, fluvial, coastal, and hydrological systems in remote sensing and ground based datasets/observations, and to finally paint a fair picture on the active tectonic scenario of South India. The study reveals that the phenomena, viz. extensive soil erosion, reservoir siltation, sediment dump into the ocean, preferential migration of rivers, restricted marine regression, shrinkage of back waters, withdrawal of creeks, fall of groundwater table, etc., indicate two E–W trending ongoing tectonic (Cymatogenic) archings along Mangalore–Chennai in the north and Cochin–Ramanathapuram in the south. Intervening these two arches, a cymatogenic deep along Ponnani–Palghat–Manamelkudi exhibiting phenomena opposite to the above is observed. In addition, the characteristic tectonic, geomorphic, and hydrological anomalies observed in 1B satellite FCC data, as well as in the field, indicate N–S trending extensional, NE–SW sinistral, and NW–SE dextral strike slip faults. These anomalies and the tectonic features deduced there upon, indicate that the southern part of the Indian Peninsula is tectonically active due to the northerly to north– north-easterly directed compressive force related to post collision tectonics. This active tectonic model visualized for South India gives a further clue that the whole Indian plate is whirling like a worm with alternate E–W arching and deepening, along with block and transform faulting from Cape Comorin in the south to the Himalayas in the north.

Abstract

The continental drifting and the movement of Indian plate to the tune of 6500 km in a time frame of 65 million years towards north north-easterly, its collision with Eurasian plate, the rise of mighty Himalayan mountains, the still prevalent northerly directed compressive force which has originally drifted the Indian plate and the disseminated intraplate seismicities have been the proven facts. In this context, a remote sensing based study carried out using IRS satellite images revealed that the whole Indian plate is whirling like a worm with series of alternately arranged E-W trending arches and deeps and N-S extensional/block faulting, NE-SW & NW-SE strike slip faults and E-W trending fracture swarms from Cape Comorin in the South to foot hills of Himalayas in the north. These ongoing tectonic activities have displayed hierarchy of geomorphic anomalies in the fluvial, coastal and hydrological systems and these suggest that the whole Indian subcontinent warrant detailed studies to understand the post drift kinematics and its impacts over the ecosystems, natural resources and natural disasters.

Consequent to the continental drifting, the Indian plate has moved towards north northeasterly and collided with Eurasian plate, thus resulting into the rise of Mighty Himalayan Mountains along the junction of these two plate boundaries as demonstrated by many earlier Geoscientists. Abstract

Historically, the tiny island katchatheevu located in between Rameshwaram and Srilanka belongs to Ramnad Kingdom and it was handed over to Britishers and during the British’s rule. During that time both Indian and Srilankan fishermen communities were using this for their fishing related activities. On a goodwill, in 1994, the Government of India donated this island to Srilanka. Since then it has become a major issue and a perpetual problem to Indian fishermen that they could neither do fishing around nor berth their boats for drying their fishing nets. Under this scenario, an attempt was made to evaluate the geological setting of Katchatheevu island using E-Topo data which provides the sea bottom topography/morphology. The study revealed that the Katchatheevu island is the north eastern extension of the Pisasumunai of the Rameshwaram island and such arcuate nature of the land between the Pisasumunai and Katchatheevu is attributed to anticlockwisly spiralling littoral currents which would have dumped the sands and developed the island. Thus the study brings some newer information that the Katchatheevu is geologically a part of Indian land mass.

Studies and Findings

The boundary problems within the nations and amongst the nations, especially amongst the territorial nations, have started emerging as major issues of global concern. Katchatheevu Theevu located between India and Sri Lanka is one such a major issue, as the said island which originally belonged to Ramnad kingdom was handed over to Sri Lanka by India in 1974 and since then, the Indian fishermen community is facing untold miseries in the hands of Sri Lankans and hence it warrents immediate attention.

Abstract

The Adam bridge, the curvilinear chains of islands linking India (Thanushkodi) with Sri Lanka (Thalaimannar), has been a matter of scientific and mythological debate. While the great epic Ramayana says that Lord Rama built this Adam bridge around 1.5 million years ago to bring back his wife Seetha from Srilanka who was a captive by king Ravana of Srilanka, some reports gave another view that it is coral islands of 1.7 million years of age. Under this backdrop, the author refutes the claim made by NASA that the Adam bridge was located firstly by one of its satellites and cited evidences that the Indian scientists located and mapped it using the IRS satellite data much earlier. Further, on the basis of bundles of beach ridges dated in Tiruthuraipoondi-Vedaranniyam area and as well as some of these continue up to Uchipulli area in Ramanathpuram district, the author assigned an age of 3500 YBP ( Years Before Present) to Uchipulli beach ridges seen in the main land to the west of Rameshwaram and Adam’s bridge and inferred that the Adam’s bridge must be equal to or younger than 3500 YBP. The easterly nosing of Indian mainland in Ramanathapuram – Rameshwaram – Thanushkodi and its further extension in the form of Adam bridge, the author demonstrated that the because of anticlockwisely rotating littoral currents to the north and clockwisely moving littoral currents to the south of Adam bridge, the chains sandy islands namely Adam’s bridge was formed by the segregation of sands in between currents shadow zone after 3500 YBP.

Studies and Findings

There was some coverage in the newspapers some time ago about the discovery of a land bridge (Adam’s Bridge) between Dhanushkodi (India) and Talaimannar (Sri Lanka) by NASA through one of its satellite mission. It was also written in some articles that this land bridge was constructed by Lord Rama 1.7 million years ago to reach Sri Lanka with the aim to bring back his wife Sita from the clutches of Ravana. However, this linkage was refuted by NASA. It accepted that the picture was captured by one of its satellites, but it was unaware of the linkage of the land bridge with the great Indian epic Ramayana. Some reports gave another view and mentioned that the bridge was nothing, but 1.7 million years old coral reefs. Many historians have also come out against linking the Adam’s Bridge with Ramayana.

The time-transgressive changes in the landscape architecture of the Rameswaram island located in the semiarid tract of southeastern India, was animated using ARC/INFO GIS. The animation has shown that the Rameswaram island has evolved through an interplay of tectonic. fluvial, marine and aeolian activities and that the Aeolian activity was accentuated during 1921-1990 A.D

The state of Tamil Nadu in the southeastern fringe of India has well evolved riverine ecosystem in the east and a 900 km. long coastal ecosytem in the eastern fringe. From Vedaranniyam in the northeast to Cape Comorin in the southwest these fluvial and coastal ecosystems show evidence of Aeolian activity, especially during the Holocene. Several researches1, 2, 3, 4,5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13,14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 have studied the Quaternary tectonic, fluvial, fluviomarine and marine processes in this part of the semi-arid tract.

Abstract

The coastal zones are very fragile owing to the reason that these form the junction between the continents and the oceans. Further the multivariate tectonic, fluvial, marine and aeolian processes, which vary independently in their degrees and duration in space and time, act in different permutations and combinations with each other and keep on constructing and destroying the landforms along the coasts. Again, as coastal zones are heavily populated; it adds further pressure on the coastal systems. The paper deals about the hierarchy of issues faced by the coastal zones like tectonic emergence and subsidence and it‘s impacts and the ways, means and needs for measuring the rate of such movements; marine regression and the need for the time series models on the land-ocean boundaries for drawing the sea level curve for India, the Quaternary deltas and the essentiality for understanding the mixture of fluvial and marine forces for the possible future forecasting models; back water modifications, the related issues and the demands for the sediment-chemo dynamics modelling; disaster vulnerabilities and mapping methodologies etc; all using the unexplored vistas of Geomatics technology. The concept has been explained by taking Tamilnadu coast as the reference region.

Introduction

The coastal zones are always fragile as these are formed by the tectonic, fluvial, marine and aeolian processes, which act independently in varying degrees and duration and occur cumulatively in different permutations and combinations along the different parts of the coasts. In addition to such inherent fragility, the coastal zones stand vulnerably exposed to various natural and anthropogenic disasters like seismicity and earth movements, tsunamis, floods, sea level rise, cyclones, coastal erosion etc. Further, owing to the enriched land and water resources, enjoyable eco systems and avenues for intra and intercontinental trades, more than 70% of the global population and the related infrastructure are clustered in the coastal zones. Hence the scientists from all over the world have started showing more attention towards the coastal regions (Ahmed, 1972). The advent of Geomatics technology comprising multi spectral and hyper spectral remote sensing, GIS, GPS, Interferometry, etc. have opened up exhaustive newer vistas in unfurling the hidden complexities of the coastal zones and to provide solutions. From amongst many, the remote sensing based studies carried out by Shailesh Nayak and his team (2004) have brought out many first time information to light about the Indian coasts. But still we will have to go a long way, as the global coasts in general and the Indian coasts in particular are confronted with a hierarchy of challenges and the Geomatics technology can provide answers for these challenging issues owing to its unique virtues. The paper narrates the unique issues of the Indian coasts and how effectively the geomatics technology can be used in solving them. This has been done by taking Tamil Nadu coast as the test area.

Abstract

Geomorphology not only provides the panorama on the external architecture of the Earth surface, but also it is the record of the past geological events including the climate, especially of the Quaternary period. Detailed geomorphology map was prepared using the IRS LISS IV FCC and SRTM data showing the tectonic, denudational and fluvial landforms of Kollai hill, Eastern Ghats, Tamil Nadu. The geomorphic features showed that the Kollai hill can be divided into two as northern and southern blocks separated by a NE-SW active sinistral fault in the overall N-S rectangular hill. The integration all the geological , structural and geomorphic features show that the Kolli hill is under the grip of uplift in the south west with hinge towards north easterly. Because of this, the northern block/rim of the hill is fragmented into a series of East-West trending fracture/ fault swarms which are sympathetic tectonic grains to the Attur graben rimming the Kollai hill to its north. This phenomenon seems to control the overall resources and environment of the hill.

The mountains are not only the store houses of natural resources like minerals, water, geothermal springs, forest & biomass etc., but also possesses unique & self-styled ecosystems drafting the mankind from the plains for comfort and livelihood. Further, the tourists are highly attracted by the mountain regions due to the ecosystems, climate and scenic beauty. Due to all these, the resources of the mountains are exponentially exploited during the recent 6–7 decades thus causing phenomenal depletion of natural resources and initiation of chains of environmental disorders, viz., deforestation triggered soil erosion, landslides, debris dumping along the slopes and foot hills, sedimentation of the downhill reservoirs & drainages, all of which in turn induce haphazard flooding. Hence, the Union and various Federal Governments have started working on the restoration of the ecosystems of their respective mountain regions in several nations. In the Indian sub- continent too, both under the Centrally sponsored schemes and the State funding, number of Hill Area Development Programmes have been initiated and going on especially in Himalayas, Easternghats and Westernghats. The state of Tamil Nadu possesses both Easternghats and Westernghats. While the Westernghats are found along the western part of the state with NNW-SSE orientation, the Easternghats represented by the Kollai- Pachhamalai hills, Shevroy - Chitteri – Kalrayan hills and Javadi hills, aligned in N-S direction, are traversing the Central part of Tamil Nadu. To comprehensively understand the resources, hazards potential, the ecosystems and also the modern geological processes which only control and tutor them, a geomatics based study was carried out in Kollai hills so that it can be used as a reference study to all those who are engaged in eco-restoration and hill area development programmes in India.
