Soil salinity is a global threat which affects crop production and poses challenges to sustainable development in various regions worldwide. Worldwide, salinity and sodicity impact 20% of cultivated land and 33% of irrigated land, respectively (Kumar and Sharma, 2020). Global map of salt–affected soil (SAS) indicated that 0.424 billion hectares of upper soil layer (0–0.3 m) and 0.833 billion hectares of subsoil layer (0.30–1 m) are salt-affected (FAO, 2021) and by 2050, salinization will degrade 50% of agricultural land (Wang et al., 2003). In India, SAS currently occupy 2.1% of total geographical area. Among the SAS, 2.96 million ha is saline and 3.77 million ha is sodic (Narjary et al., 2024). Due to salinity and sodicity, yearly 16.8 million megagram of agricultural produce are wasted in India, costing of ? 230.2 billion (Sharma et al., 2015).
Salt–affected soils are a significant concern in several regions of India. These soils contain high level of sodium salts (NaCl, Na2SO4, NaHCO3, Na2CO3) which adversely affect soil fertility and crop productivity. Here are some areas in India known to have salt–affected soils:
1. Indo–Gangetic Plain: The Indo–Gangetic Plain, spanning across states like Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and parts of West Bengal, is prone to salinity issues. Over–irrigation, poor drainage, the presence of salt containing parent materials in the lithology and use of saline irrigation have contributed to soil salinity.
2. Coastal Regions: Coastal regions in India, such as parts of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karela, Odisha and Andaman and Nicobar Islands experience salinity problems due to sea water intrusion and the presence of coastal saline soils. These soils are affected by high levels of sodium chloride and other salts, making them unsuitable for cultivation of most arable crops.
3. Arid and Semi–Arid Regions: Arid and semi–arid regions, including areas in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and parts of Madhya Pradesh, face the risk of soil salinization due to low rainfall, high evaporation rates, and poor– quality irrigation water. Waterlogging in these regions can also lead to soil salinization.
4. Irrigation Command Areas: Certain irrigation command areas in different states, including Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, have witnessed salinity problems as a result of improper water management, excessive irrigation, and inadequate drainage infrastructure.

Subsequently, we will shift our focus to achievable production, the real-world yield obtained by farmers. This actual yield invariably falls short of the potential due to a myriad of biotic (pests, diseases, weeds), abiotic (water scarcity, nutrient deficiencies, extreme temperatures, poor soil health), and socio-economic (lack of access to inputs, knowledge, or markets) constraints. Orthogonal designs provide an efficient framework for arranging treatments and sources of variation so that their effects can be estimated independently. This chapter introduces contrasts, orthogonal contrasts, and the concept of orthogonality in experimental design. Orthogonality helps prevent the effects of different factors from becoming entangled and facilitates systematic statistical analysis. The chapter discusses three basic experimental designs: Completely Randomized Design, Randomized Complete Block Design, and Latin Square Design. New techniques and approaches to groundwater studies are always in deep concern with the hydrogeomorphologists. The designing of new techniques or adapting existing techniques with better enhancement to solve practical problems in the study of groundwater are of central concern. One of the recent technical developments include the mathematical model of groundwater flow that has become the most widely used computer-based model in the groundwater industry. Techniques to identify and date recently recharged water that is useful in characterizing the susceptibility of hydrogeologic environments to contamination are utilized by various research groups all over the world.

Geophysical methods for determining the hydraulic properties of fractured rocks gained the importance in the hydrogeomorphic studies. Predicting the movement of water and contaminants through fractured rocks has been one of the most challenging problems in hydrogeomorphology. Besides conventional and above mentioned techniques the techniques discussed in this chapter are Remote Sensing, Geographical Informational system (GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS), Digital Elevation Model (DEM), Groundwater Information System (GWIS), Digital Surface Terrain Modelling (DSTM), Multicriteria evaluation (MCE) and Thermal Infra Red (TIR) Mapping and Microwave Data.

Abstract

Geomatics (Remote Sensing and GIS) based tsunami damage assessment was carried out for Nagapattinam coast as a part of All India Coordinated Programme of NRDMS, Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi. The paper discusses the methodology and the inferences made for Nagapattinam region, Sirkali block and north Poigainallur panchayat village, holistically for the former and as case studies for the latter two. The regional studies show that the coastal geomorphology has played a significant role in tutoring the tsunami inundation and the damages with beach, dunes, tidal flats, backwaters and rivers / streams facilitating the inundation of tsunami. The studies in Sirkali block show the similar role of geomorphology, but the damage assessment carried out for Water bodies, soil and ground water show appreciable damage to Aquifer in the form of saltwater mixing / intrusion due to tsunami. Detailed geospatial data bases were generated village wise too. On the basis of the studies, possible remedial strategies were also suggested.

In R this task is performed in two steps. First, a data structure is created to hold the data and second is the entering or exporting the data into data structure.

Abstract

The ever increasing population in India and the world, impeding threats from the climate change scenario and the increasing demand for land resources from the industrial sector calls for improved resource efficiency. The production strategies are changing from input intensive to integrated resource management strategies. The shift is towards adopting the precision farming technologies like addressing the site specific variability and crop needs. Remote sensing technology coupled with GIS has been recognized as reliable tool in agriculture to guide application of fertilizer, pesticides and other farm inputs. With precision farming, technologies such as grid soil sampling, remote sensing, on- the-go sensing, and electronic yield monitoring help farmers gather very detailed information about the heterogeneous makeup of a farm field. Site specific applications means application of required input only where it is required rather than entire fields or adjusting application rates accordingly. Definition
Remote sensing can be defined as any process whereby information is gathered about an object, area or phenomenon without being in contact with it. Our eyes are an excellent example of a remote sensing device. The beginning of the 20^th century was heralded by methodological revolution in geomorphological studies brought in by Davis (1899). His classical model of geographical cycle defined by him ‘ as a period of time during which and uplifted landmass undergoes its transformation by the process of land sculpture ending into a low featureless plain (peneplain)’ dominated the geomorphological investigations all over the world throughout 1^st half of the 20^th century.

The statistical techniques by Horton (1932 and 1945) brought quantitative revolution in the field of geomorphology when he presented quantitative analysis of morphometric characteristics of fluvially originated drainage basin. Post 1950 geomorphology has undergone vast change in the methods and approaches to the study of landforms, conceptual framework, paradigm and thrust areas of study. The most outstanding contribution to the advancement of geomorphological knowledge in this period is the adoption of quantitative approach based on deductive scientific method to the study of landforms and processes at short spatial and temporal scales (Strahler, 1956 and Schumm, 1956).

Several attempts have been made in the world in past to classify large territories and landforms into morpho-units. Valuable contributions pertaining to landform analysis have been summarized below: Joerg (1914) subdivided North America into natural regions, Fenneman (1914) established physiographic boundaries and gave physiographic divisions of the United States, whereas Anderson (1941) gave physiographic divisions of Columbia plateau. Howard and Spock (1940) and Weaver (1965) presented the excellent ways of classification of the landforms while Wood and Snell (1960) applied the quantitative systems for the classification of the landforms. However, Linton (1951) and Hammond (1954 and 1965) gave techniques for mapping delineating small scale and large-scale landforms.

Applications of Remote Sensing

The era of satellite remote sensing was open in the 1960s when cameras and electronic sensors were mounted on spacecraft. Nowadays there is a big assortment of satellite systems actively recording information about the Earth. A wide variety of imagery is available from satellites. Both active and passive sensors, operating from the microwave to the ultraviolet regions of the electromagnetic spectrum collect a large amount of information about the earth’s surface every day. Participatory GIS

Geographical information System (GIS0 and Geographics Information Technologies (GITS) are no more restricted to the elite group of the society. Planners are busy in searching ways in merging community participation with GIS in the context of urban planning, environment equity, sustainable development etc. (Aitken and Michael, 1995, Craig and Ehwood, 1998; Talen, 2000 and Sieber, 2000). In all the cases, common thing is the linking of community participation and GIS in a diversity of social and environmental contexts. Through development, demonstration and modification of methodologies by academics and practitioners the concept of Participatory GIS (P-GIS) emerges. It is an outcome of a spontaneous fusion of participatory forms of development planning with modern information technologies. Experts gave considerable thoughts on the probing questions like whether a bottom up GIS could be successfully developed, how many community participation could be incorporated into GIS and to what context such participation would serve only to legitimize conventional top-down decision making. From these reflections only the concept of people’s participation GIS arose.

Surface Water Resources

Surface water is a general term describing any water body which is found flowing or standing on the surface, such as streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and reservoirs. Surface water originates from various combinations of sources:

1. Direct precipitation - rainfall which falls directly in the surface water body;
2. Surface runoff - rainfall which has fallen onto the surrounding land and that flows directly over the surface into the water body;
3. Interflow - excess soil moisture which is constantly draining into water body; and
4. Water table discharge - where there is an aquifer below the water body and the water table is high enough, the water will discharge directly from the aquifer into the water body.

The quality and quantity of surface water depends on a combination of climate and geological factors. The recent pattern of rainfall, for example, is important in enclosed water bodies such as lakes and reservoirs where water is collected over a long period and stored. The water storage in streams and rivers is in a constant stage of movement and depend on the weather conditions.

Geomorphometric analysis is the measurement of the threedimensional geometry of landforms and has traditionally been applied to watersheds, drainages, hill slopes, beaches, and other groupings of terrain features. In particular basin morphometric parameters have received a lot of attention from hydrologists and geomorphologists since watersheds (catchments) have been used for analysis of various physical ecosystem processes, including soil erosion, deposition, runoff, stream discharge, sediment yield, sedimentation of streams, irradiation by sunlight, evaporation, evapotranspiration, and nutrient distribution. The study of morphometric parameters, which include variables such as average basin slope, the basin elongation ratio, compactness ratio, basin relief and stream density. Some parameters, such as slope length or stream sinuosity, can be used to represent both basin and hill slope, or basin and stream channel properties.

The main task before geomorphologists is to use an ideal unit of the earth surface for the study of its landforms. The search for an ideal areal unit, within which the collection, processing, organization and interpretation of the data of the geometry of landform, particularly of erosional origin can be made has been the main aim of the geomorphologists right from Fennemen (1914), Horton (1932 and 1945), Strahler (1956 and 1957), Miller (1953), Chorley (1957), Schumm (1956), Shreve (1966), Singh (1981), Sarkar (1995), Schumm and Spitz (1996), Sharma and Amin (1996), Iqbaluddin et al (1997) and Raj et al (1999).

1.1 INTRODUCTION

Geographic Information System (GIS) is the new emerging field and grows at very rapid pace. Now GIS is a billion dollar industry with applications in varied disciplines. At present, GIS is being used by professionals from various disciplines. In this decade, GIS is being used by experts who are good in GIS technology for various applications. The development trend indicates that GIS will be used by common man in near future and at the same time, advanced GIS analysis will be carried out by GIS experts.

Any technology is developed out of necessity and GIS is of no exception. When a large amount of data were available for water distribution systems, road network, sewer lines, telecom lines, electricity lines, gas pipe lines, state wise population, natural resources etc, it is important to store, maintain and retrieve the data for applications. It is not possible to manually browse through the large amount of paper records. Also even if the data is available in an unorganized way in the computerized environment, it is not useful. Hence if the data are referred to locations in earth surface and the data are stored in an organized way, it is possible to retrieve and analyse the data for applications. Hence the solution is GIS and developed today into reality. Developed countries are using GIS widely in many areas but developing countries are moving towards the development of GIS database for their resources.

Remote sensing, aerial photography, cartography, surveying and other field instruments for attribute data collection contributes to the data acquisition. Cartography, surveying, geography, geodesy contributes for mapping process. Disciplines like computer science and statistics, mathematics involved in processing and analysing data . Computer science and mathematics involved in storing the data structure.

GIS maps are intelligent. It has many advantages compared with paper map in this digital age.

Spatial data means data which are referenced to earth. Maps, satellite imageries, aerial photographs are example of spatial data. Attribute data which are attached to spatial data are called as aspatial data or non-spatial data.

If these data are brought into GIS then it is stored in a standard format, it is possible to update, share, retrieve, manipulate and analyse quickly. Much of the time and money is saved in case of reproduction and better decisions could be made

Data pre-processing is a crucial step in data analysis and machine learning that involves preparing raw data for further processing and analysis. Proper preprocessing helps in improving the quality of the data, which in turn enhances the performance of machine learning models. Smoothening VIS-NIR spectra enhances signal quality by reducing noise, crucial for better spectral data interpretation. Key methods include Savitzky-Golay and moving average filters, wavelet transform (WT), and frational derivatives.
Savitzky-Golay Filter: The Savitzky-Golay filter is widely used for smoothing spectral data. It preserves the original shape and features of the signal better than simple averaging filters.Savitzky-Golay Filter fits low-degree polynomials to successive subsets of data points using linear least squares, effectively preserving the signal’s original shape and features, making it ideal for spectroscopy. Moving Average:Moving Average is a simple method that reduces random noise by averaging neighboring data points. While effective, it can sometimes blur sharp features.
Wavelet Transform: Wavelet transform is effective for denoising spectral data, especially when dealing with non-stationary signals.Wavelet Transform (WT) decomposes spectral data into multiple scales, providing both time and frequency information. It is particularly useful for identifying features like peaks and trends. WT includes Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT), Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), and Maximal Overlap Discrete Wavelet Transform (MODWT). Fourier Transform Filtering: Fourier transform can be used to remove highfrequency noise components from the spectra.
Median Filter: Median filtering is useful for removing outliers and preserving edges in the spectral data.
Fractional derivative:Fractional derivative generalizes traditional derivatives to non-integer (fractional) orders, allowing for arbitrary order derivatives. This provides a flexible, nuanced approach to modeling and analyzing complex, nonlinear, or memory-dependent behaviors.

Introduction

Water is one of the most precious gifts of nature to living beings and particularly to the mankind. On account of erratic distribution of rainfall both in time and space, the country is subjected to cycles of floods and droughts. With the increase in demand for water for various purposes and to mitigate the twin problems of floods and droughts faced by the country, a coordinated approach for optimum utilization and proper management of this precious resource is of prime importance. In addition, proper development and management of both irrigation and drainage systems are essential. This would require integrated management of surface water as well as gorund water. All the water related problems whether mitigating droughts or floods or better irrigation management practices, dictate for adoption of state of the art water management practices. Water management deals with the control, distribution and allocation of water flows and the treatment of rivers and catchments, consequently, solutions to many of the problems in water management require the knowledge and expertise from diverse sources.

1. Introduction
Soil is an extremely complex ecosystem and performs many functions, i. e, biomass production; food contingency, fuel and fibre; buffering and transforming actions; breakdown of organic matter; nutrients recycling; carbon sequestration; providing a biological habitat; source of raw materials; and regulation of water quality and supply (Weil and Brady, 2017; Telo da Gama, 2023). However, because of natural as well as anthropogenic reasons, there is a widespread degradation of soils. Soil degradation means deterioration in overall soil functioning which leads to slowdown of distribution of ecosystem services because of the impairment of soil health through anthropogenic perturbations. Therefore, farmers and researchers are very much concerned about soil health and crop productivity. Soil health status and its quality are often used interchangeably and have been defined by research community differently but recently the word soil health is acquiring popularity due to its flexibility in allowing diverse stakeholders, including policymakers to use the term in their own way. Recently, soil health is a topic of much discussion and research (Bünemann et al., 2018). Soil health is described as “the continued capacity of soil to function as a vital living ecosystem that sustains plants, animals, and humans” (USDA-NRCS, 2019). A broader, ecologically based approach is “the capacity of soil to function as a vital living system, within ecosystem and land-use boundaries, to sustain plant and animal productivity, maintain or enhance water and air quality, and promote plant and animal health” (Doran et al., 2000). Soil health refers to the actual capacity of a soil to function, contributing to ecosystem services. Many have defined it as “fitness for use” while the rest regard as “capacity of the soil to function”. Lehmann et al. (2020) stated that the concept of soil health “connects agricultural and soil science to policy, stakeholder needs and sustainable supply-chain management” and compared the soil health concept to soil fertility, soil quality and soil security. Furthermore, they came to a conclusion that soil health is narrower concept than soil security, but more comprehensive than soil quality and even broader than soil fertility, in relation to the current sustainable development goals (SDGs) as proposed by United Nations. From an overall perspective. Soil health comprises of refinement and unification of the chemical, physical, physico-chemical, biophysical, biochemical indicators of soil that supports productivity and environmental quality (Figure 1). Soil can be classified as healthy or unhealthy based on its ability to sustain plant and animal productivity while maintaining air and water quality.

Introduction

A geographic information system or geographical information system (GIS) is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of spatial or geographical data. The acronym GIS is sometimes used for geographic information science (GIScience) to refer to the academic discipline that studies geographic information systems and is a large domain within the broader academic discipline of geoinformatics. What goes beyond a GIS is a spatial data infrastructure, a concept that has no such restrictive boundaries. In a general sense, the term describes any information system that integrates stores, edits, analyzes, shares, and displays geographic information. GIS applications are tools that allow users to create interactive queries (user-created searches), analyze spatial information, edit data in maps, and present the results of all these operations. Geographic information science is the science underlying geographic concepts, applications, and systems.

GIS is a broad term that can refer to a number of different technologies, processes, and methods. It is attached to many operations and has many applications related to engineering, planning, management, transport/logistics, insurance, telecommunications, and business. For that reason, GIS and location intelligence applications can be the foundation for many location-enabled services that rely on analysis and visualization. GIS can relate unrelated information by using location as the key index variable. Locations or extents in the Earth space–time may be recorded as dates/times of occurrence, and x, y, and z coordinates representing, longitude, latitude, and elevation, respectively. All Earth-based spatial–temporal location and extent references should, ideally, be relatable to one another and ultimately to a “real” physical location or extent. This key characteristic of GIS has begun to open new avenues of scientific inquiry.

Introduction

Glaciers are large masses of snow, re-crystallized ice and rock debris that accumulate in great quantities and begin to flow outwards and downwards under the pressure of their own weight. Glaciers form when yearly snowfall in a region far exceeds the amount of snow and ice that melts in a given summer. In this way, massive quantities of glacial material accumulate in relatively small periods of geologic time. The glaciers exist in environments of high and low precipitation and in many temperature regimes; they are found on all the continents except Australia and they span the globe from high altitudes in equatorial regions to the polar ice caps. Presently, 10% of the Earth’s land area (5.8 million square miles) is covered with glaciers storing about 75% of the world’s freshwater. However, during the last Ice Age, glaciers covered 32% of the total land area of the planet.

The availability of land and water resources has a major effect on the economic and ecological aspects of life everywhere around the world. As a result, the need to develop better tools for efficient land and water resources management has become very vital. For quicker, reliable and precise results, it is necessary to use the geospatial tools and techniques such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) image interpretation and analysis techniques to manage the natural resources. The application of these tools and techniques not only facilitates timely and repetitive analysis of all the topological features, but also assists in development of Decision Support Systems (DSS) to generate alternative scenarios for optimal use of the natural resources in the long term. The optimal use of these resources through integrated management of land water and vegetation leads to enhanced production and productivity of food, fodder, fiber, fuel, fish, flower and forest resources. Moreover, the holistic management of the resources to produce these outputs is plausible and manageable within the watershed systems, which are hydro geological units from which the runoff resulting from precipitation flows past through a single outlet to downstream locations. The systematic management of land, water, vegetation and livestock resources within the watershed systems is termed as Integrated Watershed Management (IWM). Broadly, IWM can be defined as a multidisciplinary, holistic way of protecting and managing a watershed’s natural resources to enhance biomass production in an eco-friendly manner. The watershed is viewed as a hydro-geological complex and dynamic ecosystem in which natural and anthropogenic processes occur and interact resulting in generation of runoff at the watershed outlet.

Geographic Information System handles large volumes of data. It is important to know the nature of data, instruments from which the data is collected and represented in computers. GIS data is either spatial or aspatial. Data is an important component in GIS. Digital data are available for some projects. but for many projects, input data may not be available. Now-a-days, data is supplied by many government, private organizations and also available on internet. If data for a particular project is not available, then the user has to collect the data from satellite imageries, GPS and other instruments and maps from various sources.

Spatial Data

All locations in the earth surface are spatial data. Location of a city, location of a river, location of a lake are represented in earth by their latitude or longitude in global coordinate system or as x,y coordinate in Cartesian coordinate system. Spatial data consists of location, shape and size in earth. A village boundary is represented as a polygon in map. The village is having certain shape of irregular polygon with definite area. As all these are mappable , they are called as spatial data. But name of the village, revenue of a village and description about a village and called as non-spatial or aspatial data.

Abstract

Carrying out effective and sustainable agriculture has become an important issue in recent years. A key to this is the usage of modern technologies for precision agriculture. Recent technological developments allowed envisioning sensor devices with distributed ambient sensory network, which could be a potential technology for monitoring various natural phenomena (weather parameters, soil moisture, etc.) at micro level. As more and more agricultural data are virtually being harvested along with the crops and are being collected/ stored in databases, the same can be used in productive decision making if appropriate data mining techniques are developed/applied. As a case study for this, an experiment was conducted with four consecutive agricultural (Kharif and Rabi) seasons in a semi-arid region of India to understand the crop-weather-environment-pest/diseases relations using wireless sensory and field-level surveillance data on closely related and interdependent pest/disease dynamics of groundnut crop. Association rule and multivariate regression mining techniques/algorithms were propose developed /tailor-made to turn the data into useful information/ knowledge/relations/trends to know crop-weather- environment-pest/disease continuum. These findings have been used for development of prediction models (cumulative and non-cumulative) followed by a web based pest/disease decision support system.

Introduction

National prosperity and human resources development are primarily shaped by the availability of natural resources and their use. None the less, the benefits are quite often negated by the resultant environmental degradation concomitant with their utilisation for economic values. The problems of environmental degradation have assumed critical dimensions in many parts of India due to resources exploitation; industrialisation and urbanisation, unchecked population growth and a never ending quest for energy to meet the increasing demands. Moreover, improper utilisation of resources has resulted in such environmental problems as soil erosion, waterlogging, floods, droughts and pollution of various types besides socio-economic disparity among people.

After the 1972 Stockholm conference on Human Environment and Development, there has been a phenomenal increase in the worldwide interest in the environmental issues associated with development. Consequently, the focus of development has shifted to environment friendly and sustainable developmental planning in recent years. The Rio Summit (June 3-14, 1992) further emphasised the fact that earth is an integral and interdependent system, which require sustainable developmental planning. During deliberations of the Rio Summit (Earth Summit), it was emphasised that satellite imagery will be quite helpful in monitoring earth’s environment.

India has a long tradition of environmental protection and has enacted laws during the last three decades to give further impetus to the conservation of natural resources and protection of environment. Some of the important laws are:

In the realm of modern agriculture, achieving sustainability is paramount. The judicious use of resources and the maintenance of soil and crop health are vital components of this endeavor. Remote sensing is a powerful technique used to gather information about the Earth’s atmosphere and surface without direct physical contact (Lillesand et al., 2015). It involves the acquisition, measurement, and analysis of data from sensors aboard platforms such as satellites, airplanes, drones, or ground-based instruments. These sensors record electromagnetic radiation, providing valuable insights into various aspects of the Earth’s environment. Remote sensing technology has emerged as an invaluable tool for achieving these objectives, offering a range of benefits for sustainable agriculture (Jensen, 2009). With the advent of modern technologies such as hyperspectral remote sensing (HRS) that collects information in narrow contiguous bands, many new avenues of applications have come up. This detailed spectral information enables the precise identification and classification of objects based on their unique spectral signatures. Further, the narrow spectral reflectance provides significant information regarding the biophysical, biochemical, and physiological parameters of crops. These characteristics of HRS provides opportunities for improved feature identification, anomaly detection, and quantification. Often HRS data also complement to the remote sensing data, such as LiDAR or SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar), allowing for a more comprehensive understanding of the Earth’s surface and its features. All these features of HRS enables precision agriculture, allowing the management practices as per the specific needs of the fields. By assessing soil and crop conditions remotely, one can apply resources like water, fertilizers, and pesticides precisely where and when they are needed. This minimizes waste and reduces the environmental impact of agricultural operations. Hyperspectral remote sensing can also assess critical soil parameters such as moisture content, pH levels, and nutrient concentrations. Monitoring these factors over time helps farmers make informed decisions about soil management and the choice of suitable crops. It also aids in preventing soil degradation and erosion. Early detection of stressors like pests, diseases, and nutrient deficiencies is crucial for maintaining crop health and maximizing yields. Remote sensing provides a timely and accurate means of monitoring crop conditions across large areas, enabling rapid responses to threats and reducing yield losses. In regions with water scarcity, efficient water management is essential. Remote sensing can track soil moisture levels and assess irrigation needs. By optimizing irrigation practices, farmers can conserve water resources while maintaining crop productivity. Remote sensing, particularly hyperspectral remote sensing can detect changes in

Precision Farming (PF) revolves around the idea that any agricultural land contains wide spatial variations in soil types, nutrient availability, and other important factors. If these variations are not taken into account, then there may be a loss in productivity. Precision farming is one of the most scientific and modern approaches to sustainable agriculture that has gained momentum in 21^st century. Consider the situation: ‘A farmer goes to his/her field with his/her Global Positioning System (GPS) guided tractor. The GPS senses the exact location of the tractor within the field. It sends the signal to a computer on the tractor that has a Geographical Information System (GIS), storing the soil nutrient requirements map in it. GIS, in consultation with a Decision Support System, decides what is the exact requirement of the fertilizer for a given location and then commands a variable rate fertilizer applicator, attached with the tractor, to apply the exact dose at that precise location. All this is done within a second, before the tractor moves further.’ This may sound like an excerpt from a scientific fiction, but this is what precision farming means to the large growers of the United States or European countries and day is not far off when it will be feasible for large Indian farmers as well.

PF refers to a developing agricultural management system that promotes variable management practices within a field according to site or soil conditions. Within a short span of time, this concept has been described with various names viz. farming by soil; farming soil, not fields; farming by the foot; spatially prescriptive farming; computer aided farming; farming by computer; farming by satellite; high-tech sustainable agriculture; soil-specific crop management; site-specific farming; and site-specific crop management.

Introduction 
The preceding chapter elucidated the concepts of potential and achievable crop production, highlighting the significant gap that often exists between a crop‘s theoretical maximum yield and what is realized in the field. While genetic potential and optimal climatic conditions define the upper limits, the vast majority of agricultural systems globally operate under less-than-ideal circumstances. Among the most pervasive and impactful constraints on crop productivity are moisture (water) and nutrient limitations. These two factors, either individually or in complex interaction, are frequently the primary drivers of the yield gap, preventing crops from expressing their full genetic potential and significantly impacting farm profitability and regional food security. Water, as the universal solvent and a direct participant in photosynthesis and countless metabolic processes, is indispensable for plant life. However, its availability in agricultural systems is highly variable and often insufficient. From the rainfed fields dependent on increasingly erratic rainfall patterns to irrigated lands facing dwindling water resources, moisture stress – encompassing both drought and, paradoxically, waterlogging – poses an immense challenge. Drought alone accounts for a substantial portion of global crop losses, directly affecting plant physiological functions, growth, and ultimately, yield. Conversely, excessive moisture can lead to anaerobic soil conditions, nutrient leaching, and root damage, equally debilitating for crop performance. Parallel to moisture, the availability and judicious management of essential plant nutrients are foundational to productive agriculture. Plants require a suite of macro- and micronutrients for healthy growth, enzymatic activity, and the synthesis of biomass. Soils, over time and with continuous cropping, often become depleted of these vital elements, necessitating external application through fertilizers or the enhancement of natural nutrient cycling processes. The Indian Peninsula in general and its southern part in particular has been thought to be a stable shield area and hence inert to younger earth movements and seismicities. However, in addition to fast relapsing seismicities, the studies carried out by earlier workers during the past three decades indicate possible pulsatory tectonism, at least since the Jurassics. The present study is a newer attempt to identify, analyse, and spatially amalgamate a large number of anomalies visibly displayed by the tectonic, fluvial, coastal, and hydrological systems in remote sensing and ground based datasets/observations, and to finally paint a fair picture on the active tectonic scenario of South India. The study reveals that the phenomena, viz. extensive soil erosion, reservoir siltation, sediment dump into the ocean, preferential migration of rivers, restricted marine regression, shrinkage of back waters, withdrawal of creeks, fall of groundwater table, etc., indicate two E–W trending ongoing tectonic (Cymatogenic) archings along Mangalore–Chennai in the north and Cochin–Ramanathapuram in the south. Intervening these two arches, a cymatogenic deep along Ponnani–Palghat–Manamelkudi exhibiting phenomena opposite to the above is observed. In addition, the characteristic tectonic, geomorphic, and hydrological anomalies observed in 1B satellite FCC data, as well as in the field, indicate N–S trending extensional, NE–SW sinistral, and NW–SE dextral strike slip faults. These anomalies and the tectonic features deduced there upon, indicate that the southern part of the Indian Peninsula is tectonically active due to the northerly to north– north-easterly directed compressive force related to post collision tectonics. This active tectonic model visualized for South India gives a further clue that the whole Indian plate is whirling like a worm with alternate E–W arching and deepening, along with block and transform faulting from Cape Comorin in the south to the Himalayas in the north.

For this reason, geoscientists have not shown much interest in studying the Neo-active-seismotectonics of the southern part of the Indian Peninsula, mostly restricting themselves to the western (Kutch) and central (Son-Narmada) parts of India (Auden 1949, West 1962, Choubey 1970, Biswas and Deshpande 1973, Kailasam 1975, Ghosh 1976, Pal and Bhimashankaran 1976, Crawford 1978, Dessai and Peshwa 1978, Sharma 1978, Guha and Padale 1981, Kaila et al., 1981, 1985, Murty and Mishra 1981, Powar 1981, 1993, Bhagwandas and Patel 1984, Bakliwal and Ramasamy 1987, Merh 1987, Ravishankar 1987, Amalkar 1988, Ramasamy et al. 1991, Gupta 1992, Sareen et al. 1993, Ramasamy 1995a, 1998, and many others).

Raster transformations involve mathematical manipulation of raster layers to generate new raster images. These transformed raster images either contain the information of interest or highlight the features which are not discernible in the original image. Transformations are also performed to preserve the essential information in reduced number of dimensions or layers. In this chapter, we are going to discuss few most commonly used transformation tools listed below:

Maps make it easier to interpret and communicate the results of any GIS analysis. R has a large number of packages for making thematic maps. Static mapping is straightforward with plot()methods provided by core spatial packages sf and raster. The use of plot() function have been discussed in the previous chapters. Another package for mapping isspwithspplot() having enough options for producing good quality thematic maps.It is also possible to create advanced maps using ggplot2. This chapter discusses, separately, preparing thematic maps from vectors and rasters with the above mentioned packages. A dedicated map-making package tmaphas been given special focus in this chapter.

It represents the final, practical output of complex agro-meteorological research and forecasting efforts, designed to empower farmers to make adaptive decisions that can significantly impact their yield, resource efficiency, and resilience against climatic shocks. In the upcoming sections, we will comprehensively examine the multi-faceted nature of weather-based agroadvisories. Our exploration will detail:
• The Conceptual Framework: Understanding the underlying principles and objectives of these advisories, emphasizing their shift from reactive responses to proactive planning.
• Essential Components of an Agroadvisory: Breaking down the key pieces of information typically included, such as weather forecasts (temperature, rainfall, wind, humidity), crop-specific phenological stages, potential risks (pests, diseases, extreme weather), and precise recommendations for farm operations (sowing, irrigation, fertilization, pest control, harvesting).

1.1 Weather Parameters

The atmosphere is a gaseous component surrounding the earth as an integral part and its interaction with ocean (water bodies), other planets of the solar system and land (Earth) generates one physical product namely weather elements (temperature, pressure, wind, humidity, precipitation, etc.,) and these form the weather and climate of the Earth. The process of generation of weather and climate of the region is purely natural and cannot be modified by the human being. But they can do adaptation to the existing climate and weather for their sustainable life. The weather can be defined as day to day change in the atmosphere in terms of heat and moisture exchange, while the climate is average of long period weather covering larger area or a region.

The particular climate of a region dictates/permits the genesis of a particular bio-organism in that domain and this selected organism’s growth and multiplication are triggered by the prevailing weather of that particular climate. Hence weather parameters of the atmosphere are very important to human being and other organisms of the Earth. The details on weather elements are given in question and answer section of this book (Annexure-I)

We have generated 54 transfomed spectra by applying different combination of parameter. Now this spectrum is to be tagged with respective soil sample and desired soil properties for which spectral modeling has to be done. Here we are generaring data tagged with CaCO3.
For that we have to use cbind() fuction. Here we are keeping soil properties in first column and spectra after that column. We are storing data in R memeory and naming data in such way that we can identify properties and transfoemed spectra attached with that data. After generating data for modeling, data is divided into calibration and validation data set by using random sampling method or Kedard-
Stone method

Supervised classification is the technique to classify raster image in which prior information about the classes in the form of training sites is provided by the user. Training site represents a homogeneous area in a particular class. The spectral response pattern of training sites is used to classify the raster image.The pixels of raster imagewhich have spectral response pattern similar to that of training sites of a particular class are grouped in that class. As there is some variability in the spectral response pattern of a particular class, therefore, multiple training sites per class are taken for supervised classification. Supervised classification of raster images can be performed by various methods. Conventional methods include maximum likelihood classifier, minimum distance to mean classifier, and parallelepiped classifier. Now a days, machine learning algorithms are also gaining importance in this context. These classifying algorithms are first trained or calibrated using the data of training sites.This trained model is then validated on the independent datasets for accuracy assessment. If the accuracy of the developed model is of acceptable level, then that model is used for the classification of raster data.

In this chapter, we are going to discuss the execution of maximum likelihood classifier and few machine learning techniques for supervised classification of raster image in R software. The training sites used in this exercise are in the form of points shapefile. The raster image is classified into six classesi.e. built- up, fallow soil, riverine sand, salt-affected soil, vegetation, and water. For performing this exercise, first of all,set the working directory and import the required packages.

8.1 Climate Change

Climate change is a broad term of global negative phenomena as created predominantly by burning of fossil fuels, which add heat-trapping gases to earth’s atmosphere. The over accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere lead to increased temperature and this is called as global warming. As a result, sea-level rise; ice mass loss in Greenland, Antarctica, Arctic and mountain glaciers worldwide; shifts in flowering/ plant blooming; and extreme weather events occur.

6.1 INTRODUCTION

Besides simple analysis, GIS is useful to do advanced analysis like network analysis, spatial analysis, 3D analysis and modeling. Different softwares are available to perform such analysis and the above mentioned analysis is done in separate modules of the softwares.

6.2 NETWORK ANALYSIS

Network consists of well connected linear features. Roads, railway line, water distribution system, sewer line, streams are some of the examples of networks. These networks consists of nodes and arcs with designated directions and connection with other linear features. Networks are topology based with attributes for the flow of objects like traffic. Road network will be considered for explaining network analysis.

Road map is digitised with nodes and arcs. Signals, accidents are represented as points. Road is represented as line and two or more roads intersect at nodes. Attributes are added to the nodes and lines. Dynamic segmentation model is used for network analysis. It is built on lines of network. In road network analysis, attributes for travel time, one way street, two way street, right turn, impedance are added to the nodes and arcs. A link is the line running between two nodes. Link impedance is the cost of passing through the link. Travel time is different in links in cities due to varying traffic at different locations. Time taken to pass through a known length of link may give the cost but the travel time in a link is not uniform because of varying speed designated in the link as 20 km per hour and 30 km per hour. Hence it is important to consider the length of link and also the travel time. If the speed limit is 20 miles per hour for a length of 2 miles, then the travel time is 6 minutes (2/20x60 minutes). Also tuning in the network is considered. A road may have a maximum of 12 possible turns excluding U turns. There are right turn, left turn, straight way for each road. Also U turn is possible. This turning takes different time depending on the signal. Straight way takes less time but left and right turn may require some more time. If signals is available then signal time should also be taken into account. Fig 6.1 show the possible turns in a road.

The importance of accurate weather forecasting cannot be overstated. It serves as a vital tool across countless sectors, guiding daily personal decisions, from what to wear to whether to carry an umbrella. Crucially, for agriculture, precise weather forecasts are indispensable. Farmers rely heavily on these predictions to make informed decisions that directly impact crop yield and livestock health. Knowing when to plant seeds, schedule irrigation, apply fertilizers and pesticides, or harvest crops is directly influenced by anticipated rainfall, temperature extremes, and wind conditions. Timely warnings of frost, hailstorms, or prolonged droughts can enable farmers to take protective measures, minimizing losses and ensuring food security. For applying spectral data models with other machine learning and regression algorithms we have to follow all steps upto Chapter 4 till the partition of whole datainto calibration and validation data set. After that different algorithms is used to develop others models so that,the best model among the different algorithms can be identified and used for better perdiction of soil properties.

The recent disastrous tsunami of December 26, 2004 has not only alarmed the administrative and the planning machinery to have tsunami mitigation strategies for India. But also signalled the geoscientists to have a deeper look on the phenomenon of tsunami and the vulnerabilities of the Indian coasts. In this context, the authors have conducted a study primarily to evaluate the responses of the coastal Geosystems to the tsunami inundation, as it is a very vital component in f raming strategies for mitigating the effect of tsunami. The study has revealed that the central coastal parts of Tamil Nadu, namely Cuddalore – Nagapattinam districts, which were worst affected by the recent tsunami, expose a combination of landforms of tectonic, fluvial, fluvio – marine and marine processes. These different landforms have responded differently to the recent tsunami viz: as facilitators, carriers, accommodators, absorbers, barriers etc. on the basis of the same, different eco – friendly, cost effective and result oriented methods are suggested to mitigate the effects of tsunamis.

QGIS (Quantum GIS) is an open-source Geographic Information System (GIS) software has been used to showcase various exercises pertaining to viewing, editing, analyzing, and printing of the geospatial data. QGIS supports raster, vector, and mesh layers. QGIS also allows using data from external sources with the help of web services such as Web Map Service (WMS) and Web Feature Service. QGIS is a constantly developing software as anyone can add new features or update existing tools. Newer versions of QGIS are frequently released on the official website. It is a cross-platform software that can be installed in Windows, Linux, and MacOS.
