Agricultural practices have been undergoing changes over a period of time throughout the world. The intensive agricultural practices followed during the past four decades in our country resulted in food security and self-sufficiency. This was achieved through development of input responsive varieties coupled with use of chemical fertilizers and plant protection chemicals. Agriculture is an important sector for economic development in India. Crop production is an important income source for millions of farmers in some cases with few cropping alternatives due to ecological constraints. All over the world majority offarmers rely on pesticides and fertilizers to increase yields. Pesticide use in most Indian agriculture is an essential part of production technology. Therefore farmers in developing countries are perceived as overusing pesticides, both in quantity and quality, with mixtures of chemicals, known locally as cocktails, being the favoured form of application (Crissman et al., 1994).

• Feedback is defined as the action reaction interdependence in communication.

• The return to the input of a part of the output is the feedback.

• Feedback is the reaction on the part of the receiver to a sender's communication.

Feedback or response of the audience is the ultimate objective of any communication process or function. Response of an audience to message received may be in the form of some kind of physical or mental action. Until the desired action results, extension communication does not achieve its most essential objectives. The response of the audience (whether in the form of action or reaction) can be used by a communicator as a check of his own effectiveness and a guide to his own future action. When a source receives feedback, that is rewarding, he continues to produce the same kind of message. When he gets non-rewarding feedback, he eventually will change his message. Schramn (1955) points out that each person in the communication process is both an encoder and decoder. He receive and transmits. However, a person will decode a message and interpret it in accordance with his own experience.• Feedback means carrying out significant responses of the audience back to the communicator.

Methods to Improve Fidelity

a) Use several channels of communication

To say the same thing, thus providing a duplication of information. Multiplying the channels used will make communication redundant. A smile, a node of the head, a firm hand shake or embrace and the greeting "Hi! How are you?" often convey the same meaning – meaning that would be conveyed through a single channel or redundantly through more than one.

b) Control the speed of communication

Information is processed by different individuals at different speeds. The rate varies for each situation and for each of the individuals in various situations. In talking casually to a few friends, we might speak very quickly where as in talking to a large group of strangers, we might want to talk more slowly because of the increased possibility for misunderstanding, the intrusion of noise. Whether we should speed up, slow down, or become more succinct (briefly and clearly explained) has to be a function of the feedback we gain. There is no specific rate that is ideal for all – except that rate at which a high degree of fidelity can be attained. It is the rate at which the amount of noise affecting the communication can be minimized. Sender and receiver should be aware of how communication works and interested in achieving the greatest f idelity possible

There are two kinds of field notes

The field diary is the basic document which contains all the data collected. Facts and interpretations are to be written separately and conversations to be noted in the vernacular languages. Two kinds of field notes are to be observed a) Taking notes on the spot b) Writing detailed diary.

Daily field diary

It is instructed to write the field diary everyday in which a) Detailed notes of observations b) Field notes on discussion and conversations c) Details of Interpersonal communication, gossips, fold history‘s similar events d) Specific details of special events Specific reference about the main field of study for instance, the details about the process of message diffusion, various kinds of channels of communication were described in detail.

Field diary for research process documentation

The most useful tool for a process documenter is a field diary. The documenter uses a field diary to record his or her observations and thoughts in an orderly fashion. Recording observations and impressions enables a researcher to pick up clues about how the system is operating. A field diary should help the investigator understand the systems physical and social setting. It should help describe who, what, why, where, when and how. Who refers to the people or system being studied. What concerns the information gathered. Why, where, when and how provide important details about the observation.

There is no special format in writing a field diary but entries should be written daily in chronological order so information is not forgetten or changed because of forgetfulness. The critical concern is that observations are recorded in a diary regularly.

A TTO needs a planned budget of five years to sustain it in the long term. This involves budgeting the infrastructure, manpower, research, and outreach programs. The budgetary needs of a TTO will be based on the size and scope of the TTO and the maturity of the parent institution it caters to. The initial years will be focused on capacity development, the appointment of experts, and the establishment of processes of intellectual property management. The mature TTO will generate income through the returns of the licensing agreements and the collaborative efforts with the industry. Nevertheless, external funding through grants and government schemes plays a vital part, particularly in the initial years. The planned budget ensures long-term stability and development of the TTO.

Operational expenditure refers to the ongoing costs incurred by a TTO to maintain its day-to-day operations. This includes the cost of maintaining the office, including rent, power and utility bills, computer and network infrastructure, patent management cost, and administration charges. A TTO has to be provided with a properly planned operational budget that covers the daily operational expenses. Millions of people worldwide still lack access to basic banking services like savings accounts, loans, and insurance and are either underbanked or unbanked altogether. Fintech, or financial technology, has emerged as a key player in resolving this problem by providing creative ways to improve banking service accessibility and advance financial inclusion.

Introduction

An agricultural project is defined as an investment activity where financial resources are expended to create the capital assets with an anticipation of benefits over time. In other words, it is an activity where money is spent to realize the expected returns and requires planning, financing and implementation as a unit. In fact, the whole complex of activities using resources to gain benefits constitute the agricultural projects. They first guaranteed that money would be available to start—the business. So, if one wanted to build up a unit for a business, one would undertake market research and then approach the bank. This chapter gives an account of a summary of the significant findings of the study, followed by tenability of hypotheses, suggestions, further areas of research in the related areas, and a conclusion. The present study investigated the Quality of Work Life (QWL) of Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals working in Kerala’s eight prominent state universities. The data of the study were collected from the two hundred and sixty-six 266 regular qualified LIS professionals. 

Three years after the establishment of the Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE), a global conference was held at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for promoting environmentally sustainable development in all spheres of human activity. At this UN Conference on Environment and Development, generally referred to as the Earth Summit, an Agenda 21 was adopted to provide guidelines for mainstreaming ecology in all major research and development programmes. In Agenda 21, pride of place has been given to the management of aquatic resources from both the quantitative and qualitative aspects. 2012 marks the twentieth anniversary of the Rio conference.  It will be useful to prepare a balance sheet indicating where we have succeeded and where we have failed in implementing Agenda 21 in the area of inland and marine fisheries, as well as integrated coastal zone management.

Introduction

Fisheries represent an important and fast growing food production sector in India that contributes more than 1% to the National GDP and 4.7% to the agricultural GDP. With an annual production of about 7 million tonnes from marine and inland waters, the country is the 3rd fish producer in the world and the 2nd largest producer of inland fish, next only to China. With a coastline of 8,129 km and EEZ of 2.02 sq km, our marine fish production is to the tune of 2.95 million tonnes. Similarly, the inland fisheries resources comprising 29,000 km of rivers, 0.3 million ha of estuaries, 0.19 million ha of backwaters and lagoons, 3.15 million ha of reservoirs, 0.2 million ha of floodplain wetlands. 0.72 million ha of upland lakes and 2.34 million ha of ponds and tanks produce 3.76 million tonnes annually. Annual export earnings from fish and shellfish are about Rs.8.357 crore, accounting for nearly 20% of the agricultural export. Fish is a health food that is relatively cheap and affordable to the poor. Fisheries and aquaculture provides income, food and livelihood to more than 14 million people directly or indirectly. The annual per capita availability of fish in the country is 9 kg that sustains the domestic market price of fish and the sector has registered an impressive overall annual growth rate of over 4% over the years, with growth in some farming activities going beyond 5%. However, stagnating growth in marine and inland capture fisheries is a cause of concern.

1. INTRODUCTION

It is hard to conceive which came first on earth, human being or food. If the human was born first, he or she needed food immediately to survive. Thereafter, the human beings continued to need food and continued to eat food throughout his or her life. Hence, the relationship between human being and food is permanent and the requirement of food for the human being to be alive is everlasting. Further, sources of food may survive in nature without human intervention but human being can not remain alive without food. This clearly signifies the permanent bondage of human being and food which is inseparable under any circumstances. ‘Thus, should we state that every human being necessarily needs food and should have right to food as soon as born.

In order to further strengthen this view, the governance which rules human beings should also be protective and enact laws to ensure food to each human being born in respective countries.

2. BACKGROUND

•   “Hunger is exclusion”, wrote de Castro (1963) a Brazilian anti-hunger advocate. “Exclusion from the land, from jobs, wages, income, life and citizenship. When a person gets to the point of not having anything to eat, it is because all the rest has been denied. This is a modern form of exile. It is death in life”.

•   Simply by being born, everyone has the right to food. A person doesn’t have to do anything to “deserve” it; the right to food is a birthright. But this does not entitle a person to sit back and ask for free food. People are responsible for doing all they can to realize their own right to food. Governments that are parties to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights are responsible for ensuring that all those living within their borders have the means to do so, (FAO, 2007).

•   Broadly speaking, governments should create peaceful, stable, free and prosperous environments in which people can feed themselves in dignity. Even without a legal obligation to do so, countries have a moral obligation to ensure freedom from hunger (FAO, 2007).

Hunger and all forms of malnutrition continue to cause widespread suffering throughout the world. Malnutrition in children commonly leads to poor growth and poor physical and mental development, increased morbidity and, all too often, death. Among adults, malnutrition leads to lethargy, frequent illness and poor health, reduced physical capacity to do work, poor pregnancy outcomes among women, decreased cognitive function and a loss of learning potential and productivity. Widespread hunger and malnutrition also serve as severe impediments to social and economic development at both community and national levels. After years of steady progress, recent setbacks in the fight against hunger and malnutrition arising from the combined effects of high food prices and the global economic downturn coupled with the continuing problems of underdevelopment, civil strife, inadequate food supplies, social discrimination and environmental stress, jeopardize the earlier hopes for achieving the poverty, hunger and nutrition-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

According to FAO, there were 105 million more hungry people in 2009 than in the previous year and the number of malnourished people now stands at 1.02 billion. In the worst-affected countries, individual productivity losses due to malnutrition are equivalent to 10% of lifetime earnings, resulting in gross domestic product (GDP) losses of up to 3%. Around the world close to 10 million children die before their fifth birthday every year, over one-third of which are associated with under nutrition. One in three developing-country children under the age of five - 178 million children – are stunted due to chronic under nutrition and poor health, and some 148 million children are underweight. Micronutrient deficiencies or “hidden hunger” affects around 2 billion people worldwide or about one third of the world’s population. These vitamin and mineral deficiencies, especially of iron, iodine, zinc and vitamin A, lead to poor physical growth and development, lowered mental capacities, reduced productivity, impaired immune systems, blindness and death - all of which are preventable.

SYNOPSIS

India has been conspicuous as one of the most malnourished nations, as every child out of two is malnourished. Moreover, the levels of under nourishment is substantially high among tribal communities. The present investigation has been made to examine the levels of food insecurity at the micro level in four regions identified in the tribal dominated areas of Maharashtra on the basis of macro level indicators. A comparison of food insecurity between the two communities reveals a high incidence of food insecurity among the tribal as compared to that of non-tribal. The nutritional status of tribal children is much lower than that of their non-tribal counterparts.

Every nation needs an effective food legislation and food control service to promote a safe, honestly presented food supply, and to protect consumers from contaminated, adulterated, and spoiled foods. The principles to be included in food safety and legislations are primarily inspection, enforcement, biological and chemical contaminants, packaging and labelling, and food trade in local and overseas market. Harmonization of Food Law on the international level is a worldwide trend from the late twentieth century. In India AGMARK and FSSAI are sole regulatory authority for food production and marketing. International laws and regulations play a vital role in trade and commerce. International regulatory bodies include CODEX, EU, HALAL, USFDA, FAO and WTO. This chapter deals with international and national food safety regulation and legislations with regulatory framework in India and implications on international trade.

Food security is an essential feature of a country’s independence and sustenance. Rapid growing population and increasing purchase capacity, both play an influential role on food security. The cultivation or agriculture has declined the world over, with India and Kerala being no exceptions mainly due to the lack of human resources to work with the soil. Uneconomic crop pricing, lack of social accreditation, poor and unstable income, insecurity to life and health etc. are the main factors which discourage the youngsters in our country from becoming ‘farmers’.

The importance of food security and its management world over has been recognized long back. The World Food Summit in 1974, called in response to the persistent and widespread under-nutrition and the future role of agriculture, stressed upon establishment of committee to review and recommend location specific action plan in sensitive areas. Asserting that every man, woman and child has the inalienable right to be free from hunger and malnutrition in order to develop their physical and mental faculties, an international undertaking on world food security was set up in which member nations committed to maintain food stocks to ensure routine and emergency food supplies (in case of crop failure, natural disaster, etc.). Monitoring the implementation of such undertaking has since then become the responsibility of the Committee on World Food Security.

There have been conflicting practices, recommendations regarding a healthy diet in human beings. Unscientific food habits are limitation to good health and active life. Because of various social, cultural, religious and economic factors human beings in the same climatic conditions and living situations, have been practicing different food habits leading to many health problems. What to eat, how much to eat and when to eat are not clear with the masses. This paper attempts to throw light on these aspects.

4.1. Registration Procedure

Registering a Producer Company follows a process similar to that of a Private Limited Company. The first step involves obtaining a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) and Director Identification Number (DIN) for the proposed directors of the company. Following this, an application for name reservation is submitted to the relevant Registrar of Companies (ROC). It’s mandatory for the name of a producer company to end with the words “Producer Limited Company” as per the Act. Once the suggested name is approved, an application for incorporation of the Producer Company is filed in the prescribed format. The Registrar reviews the application and accompanying documents, and if satisfied, approves and issues a Certificate of Incorporation.

Communication is the fundamental process of conveying information between two or more individuals or within a group. Communication process involves distinct components: a sender, a recipient, a message, and a medium through which the message is transmitted. Intra-personal Communication

Intra-personal communication involves an individual engaging in self-talk or internal dialogue. This process is an unconscious act inherent to all human beings, wherein individuals contemplate various plans and problems of daily life within their minds. People often discuss matters internally before sharing them with others or documenting them. Intra-personal communication is so ingrained in our everyday lives that it often goes unnoticed, yet it is the fundamental form of communication. All communication originates in the human mind before being expressed in interpersonal, group, or mass communication.

Inter-personal Communication

Inter-personal communication occurs between two individuals, involving one person talking, discussing, or arguing with another. This one-to-one interaction can take many forms, such as casual conversations between friends, information exchange, persuasion, problem-solving, counseling, or simple chatting. This method is widely used in extension work, particularly with poor farmers who are often illiterate and have limited access to other modes of communication. Despite being time-consuming, inter-personal communication allows for meaningful interaction between farmers and extension workers, facilitating mutual understanding and ensuring the accurate transmission of information through feedback.

Food fortification is the procedure in which micronutrients (essential trace elements and vitamins) are added to the food. As a public health policy fortification can be carried out by the food manufacturers or by the governments to help people in combatting dietary deficiencies within a population. Fortification can be done in food even if these nutrients are originally present or not. However, it improves the nutritional status of a population by overcoming the deficiencies of micronutrients. Deficiency of micronutrients is known as hidden hunger which is a serious health risk. Access to safe and nutritious food is a must.Due to the lack of consumption of a balanced diet, adequate micronutrients are not supplied to the body. Therefore, there is a considerable loss of nutrients during the processing of food. One of the strategies to address this problem is fortification of food.

In the existing socio-economic scenario, economic independence is considered as one of the main status indicator in the society. Women especially in rural areas are the deprived section of the society on account of their dependence on others for economic reasons. This necessitates generation opportunities so as to make them economically independent. Moreover, women’s contribution to national development is crucial. The process of development would be incomplete and lopsided, unless women are fully involved in it. Many innovations have failed due to non-satisfaction of women on the perceived attributes of innovations. So, it is necessary that they should be informed, trained, convinced of a technology primarily.

Farm women can’t emerge as a good entrepreneur, if they are not equipped with any skill, knowledge, education and information. So, research studies are essential to assess the training needs of them to become a successful entrepreneur. In order to know the training needs of farm women for entrepreneurial development, and the constraints faced by them to become a good entrepreneur.

A public library is a repository of diversified material that serves as the primary hub for community information the spread. It provides fair access to a wide range of information and data, meeting the diverse demands of users. Services must be inclusive, with information appropriate for all age groups and the incorporation of both classic materials and contemporary technologies across many mediums. In 1987, the ILA defined the purpose of public libraries, stating that they should serve as independent training centers for community activities. Public libraries play a pivotal role in fostering community engagement, welcoming all members to participate in various programs. Initially established by the public, these libraries later received government funding for expansion and other requirements. The systematic development of India's public library system ensued after the establishment of the Raja Rammohan Roy Library Foundation (RRRLF) in 1972.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is rapidly transforming education by changing how knowledge is created, delivered, assessed, and experienced. Unlike conventional digital technologies that primarily retrieve or process existing information, generative AI can produce new text, images, audio, code, explanations, questions, and other learning resources in response to user prompts. This chapter introduces the foundations of GenAI and traces its evolution within educational environments, from conventional digital learning systems to intelligent, adaptive, and personalized platforms. It examines the role of Large Language Models, Retrieval-Augmented Generation, Learning Management System integration, multimodal learning, adaptive assessment, and AI-supported instructional design. The chapter also considers evidence from educational implementations involving school, higher education, and other learner groups. Particular attention is given to student engagement, self-regulated learning, teacher productivity, accessibility, fairness, privacy, and governance. Sustainability in the digital age represents a transformative approach to addressing the critical challenges of economic growth, environmental stewardship, and social equity. For India’s vision of “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) by 2047, integrating sustainable practices within the digital transformation framework is pivotal. This foundation has three primary pillars: technological innovation, inclusive development, and environmental responsibility.
Role of Technological Innovation: Digital technologies have emerged as essential drivers of change, reshaping traditional methods of governance, education, healthcare, and industrial processes. Initiatives such as Digital India have laid the groundwork for building a robust digital infrastructure, empowering millions of Indians, especially in rural areas, with access to essential services. Artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and blockchain technology are transforming industries by enabling smarter decision-making, improving resource efficiency, and promoting transparency. For instance, AI-powered systems are being used to optimize energy grids, reduce waste in supply chains, and monitor environmental conditions. These advancements directly contribute to sustainability by minimizing resource consumption and mitigating environmental degradation. IoT-enabled smart cities enhance urban planning, improve waste management systems, and facilitate efficient energy use. India’s Smart Cities Mission exemplifies the integration of such technologies, targeting sustainable urbanization to accommodate the growing population without overburdening the environment.

Foundation architectures provide the technological basis for modern artificial intelligence systems and enable models to generalize across diverse tasks and modalities. This chapter examines the evolution of neural architectures that ultimately led to the dominance of the Transformer in contemporary language and multimodal AI. It begins with early neural networks, convolutional neural networks and recurrent neural networks before introducing attention mechanisms and the Transformer architecture. Particular attention is given to the major components of Transformers, including self-attention, multi-head attention, positional encoding and feedforward layers. Encoder, decoder and encoder–decoder configurations are examined through influential models such as BERT and GPT. The chapter further considers Vision Transformers and CLIP, demonstrating the extension of Transformer principles beyond natural language processing. At the same time, limitations such as computational complexity, memory requirements and long-context processing are discussed. Alternative approaches, including state-space models such as Mamba, efficient attention mechanisms, hierarchical architectures and Mixture-of-Experts models, are also explored as promising directions for scalable, efficient and adaptive AI.

This chapter delves into the core concepts of public relations, examines related terms, and explores the historical evolution of PR, which helps us understand its role in contemporary society. This overview will help readers appreciate the strategic importance of PR in contemporary society and its relevance to various stakeholders.

Bhutan has developed the concept of Gross National Happiness (GNH) as a substitute for Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In this theory, GNH comprises spiritual and cultural values, including love of sport, music, dance and spiritual activities. This is a good departure from measuring happiness purely from the view point of money. I would like to elaborate on four pillars that are necessary to uphold sustainable human happiness.

Ecology

There is an increasing awareness of the need for adopting sustainable lifestyles which will not make a heavy demand on our life-support systems of land, water, biodiversity, forests, oceans and climate. In his book titled World on the Edge.1 Lester Brown has described how we still have time to prevent environmental and economic collapse. Recent calculations on the ecological footprint each one of us is leaving behind shows that our per capita consumption of natural resources is exceeding the biocapacity of our earth. Soon we will need two planets to meet the growing demand for land, water, forests and biodiversity. In this context, we should keep in view what Mahatma Gandhi said long ago: 

The Context

A series of interventions initiated in mid-1960s that led to the green revolution in cereal production transformed the country from a situation of food def iciency to self sufficiency. The green revolution was however, restricted to productivity improvements in cereals especially wheat and rice in the initial decades, primarily grown in irrigated regions. In subsequent decades, productivity increased in other crops, namely oilseeds, sugarcane, cotton, fruits and vegetables. The Green Revolution generally by passed India’s vast rain fed tracts, especially arid zones, hill and mountain ecosystems and coastal regions, thus exacerbating agro-ecological and economic disparities. Although self sufficiency was attained in food grain production, potential of different crop varieties are yet to be attained. The main features of the green revolution were:

• exclusive focus on food grains

• intensive use of water, fertilizer and pesticides to maximize yields from High Yielding Varieties (HYVs)

• practically no focus on sustainability issues

• benefited the resource-rich and large farmers and

• dependent on few technological options focusing on hybrids, changes in plant architecture.

Pulses are widely acknowledged as superfoods, three times the protein in rice and double in wheat. Besides, they are also rich in complex carbohydrates, micronutrients, protein and B-vitamins and minerals like folate, iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc and potassium. High iron content in some pulses also minimizes the risk of anaemia. Long storability without loss of nutritional value, low prices, and broader availability make pulses an affordable source of minerals, and protein, thus contributing to food security at all levels of society in India. Besides human nutrition, pulse crops are also utilized as fodder and fuel for farm households.

1. What are Primary produce?

Primary produce, also known as primary products, refers to raw materials or natural resources that are derived from agriculture, forestry, fishing, or mining activities. These products are typically unprocessed or minimally processed, and are often used as inputs in further manufacturing or production processes. Examples of primary produce include crops such as wheat, corn, and soybeans, as well as livestock such as cattle, sheep, and pigs. Forestry products such as timber and paper pulp, as well as fish and other seafood harvested from the ocean or inland waterways, are also considered primary produce.

People can reach the web, which is short for "World Wide Web," which is a huge network of papers and tools that are all linked together. The web, which was created by Tim Berners-Lee in the late 1980s, changed the way people around the world share and receives information.

The growth of technology has had an impact not only on the formats and sources of the information, but also on the manner in which library services are provided and the locations where they are provided. A portion of libraries and the resources they provide have been relocated to the digital realm created by the Internet. The web works on a client-server model: web computers (clients) ask web servers for web pages and other data and then show them. There are connections between the text, pictures, movies, and apps that make up these tools.

Web development is based on key tools like HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), and JavaScript, which make it possible to make web pages that look good and let you interact with them. Over time, improvements like flexible web design (which makes sure that websites work on all devices) and web APIs (which let different software systems share data) have made the web experience even better.

3.1 Introduction

Women are the backbone of the family. God gave her all the power to give birth, raise the children, do all the household chores, and balance the professional work. But we forget that women are also human beings, not machines. They can’t work 24x7 they also need rest as well as proper nutrition. Women in ancient India were very powerful in terms of decision-making, political opinion, education, etc, but later on, the situation of women deteriorated. In the middle era, the situation was at its worst: women were being treated badly by the men in their own families. Currently, the situation is turning better. Women are being treated equally now times but it is not the best scenario we can have. There is still much scope in this field where equal wedges and a good environment can be provided to the women.

During the last 21 years, the scientists and scholars of the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) have been working on the design and implementation of projects which could have a large extrapolation domain in respect of imparting a pro-nature, pro-poor, pro-women and pro-sustainable livelihood orientation to technology development and dissemination. I would like to write about a few of the MSSRF initiatives, which have now become state, national and global programmes.

Mahila Kisan Sashaktikaran Pariyojana: Strengthening the role of women in agriculture

MSSRF initiated the Mahila Kisan Sashaktikaran Pariyojana in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra in 2007 for empowering women farmers, including the widows of farmers who had committed suicide, in areas related to enhancing the productivity, profitability and sustainability of small-scale rain-fed farming. The empowerment measures incorporated access to technology, credit, inputs and market.

Temperate horticulture in Himalayan States forms the backbone of states economy by providing livelihood to more than 10 million people and draws about 60% of its Gross Domestic product (GDP) from the surrounding ecological resources. Being an important sector it has been given priority in recent years through various developmental programmes to harness the vast potential of natural resources, the topography, soil, climate and horticulture crop diversity. The outburst in climate and over population have become a major concern challenging natural resources of the Himalayan region for sustainable development of agriculture and improving livelihood of the local inhabitants. Depleting natural resources and vagaries of weather are negatively affecting long-term sustainability of Himalayan agri-horti production system. In spite of several chal-lenges the horticulture in temperate region has made some progress. The area, production productivity, availability and export of horticulture products have increased manifolds leading to improvement in employment and farm income. But still the temperate fruit industry is far behind and is facing the problem of low productivity and high cost production due to lack of elite planting material, old and senile orchards, rainfed farming, lack of efficient water, nutrient and canopy management, high infestation of insect and pests, poor transport and communication coupled with weak post harvest infrastructure. The modern new high yielding varieties and technological interventions developed especially the high density plantations; canopy & pollination management; fertigation, INM and water harvesting; cost effective and eco-friendly protection technologies and post harvest management and value addition have shown great potential to revolutionize the horticulture sector to bring paradigm shift from existing low quality lower productivity sector to high quality-higher productivity sector. The farmers have an opportunity and can take the advantage of emerging technologies in temperate horticulture to improve their nutritional and livelihood security.

SYNOPSIS

Many plants or plant parts are eaten as food. In addition to essential vitamins, minerals, and fibers, plant foods contain phytochemicals and antioxidants, which actively provide protection against diseases. Several studies carried out all over the world have demonstrated the protective values of fruits. Fruits are the ripened ovaries of plants, including the seeds within. Many plants have evolved fruits that are attractive as a food source to animals, so that animals will eat the fruits and excrete the seeds some distance away.

The functioning of the Women Dairy Cooperative Societies depends upon the variations in managerial capacity leading to profit and loss of different WDCS. To make an in-depth analysis, the study was undertaken in undivided Cuttack and Dhenkanal district of Odisha covering 22 randomized WDCS with a sample of 110 women respondents.

The analysis of the findings after statistical treatment have been presented objective-wise as follows;

Gap between procedures prescribed and followed in formation and functioning of WDCS.
