The term bioinformatics was coined by Paulien Hogeweg in 1979 for the study of informatics processes in biotic systems. It was primarily used in genetic and genomic studies, particularly in those areas of genomics involving large-scale DNA sequencing. Bioinformatics involves application of information technology to store, organise and analyse the vast amount of biological data available in the form of sequences and structures of proteins (the building blocks of organisms) and nucleic acids (the information carrier). There are umpteen ways to define bioinformatics, mainly owing to its rapid evolutions.

Since the industrial revolution in the 1800s, automation got more advanced to efficiently handle sophisticated tasks and increase production. With increasing demands and shortage of labor across the globe, agriculture robots or commonly known as Agribots are starting to gain attention among farmers. Crop production decreased by an estimated 213 crores approx ($3.1 billion) a year due to labor shortages in the USA alone. Recent advancements in sensors and AI technology that lets machines train on their surroundings have made agrobots more notable. We are still in the early stages of an ag-robotics revolution, harnessing the full potential of the Internet of Things in agriculture, with most of the products still in early trial phases and R&D mode.

Introduction

Over the last two decades the Land and Water Development Division (AGL) has been at the forefront of the development and application of computer-based systems to analyse data and generate information to support decisions on various land and water issues . Separate soil and land and water systems have been developed. The soil and land systems focus on methodologies and tools for the assessment of land resources potentials at global, regional and national and sub-national levels. The water systems concern irrigation water use and management at field level and water resources assessment at regional and national levels.

AGL has been cooperating with various units within FAO and numerous international agencies and national institutions in developing and applying the systems.

Initially, in the late seventies and early eighties, the systems were developed for mainframe and mini-computers. From the late eighties they were gradually adapted to microcomputers. At the same time computer tools for managing spatial data, including geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing and global positioning systems (GPS) were introduced. Since the last few years the availability of networked PC workstations, rapid application development environment and multimedia tools have opened an era of completely new possibilities in the development and application of the systems.

Abstract

Out of 1.37 billion populationof India 67 % lives in rural areas whose major source of income is agriculture and allied activities (World Population Review, 2019). In simple words, the livelihood of this vast majority is closely related to rural enterprises. Fostering rural entrepreneurship may be affected by several issues, infrastructure being one of them. This paper attempts to examine the relationship between infrastructure investment by the state and rural entrepreneurship in India, with ‘Gross Fixed Capital Formation’ and ‘Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing, Value Added’ considered as proxy variables. Time series econometrics is compiled with the data collected from World Bank Database for the period of 1961-2017. The study has established evidence in support of greater investment in infrastructure enhancing rural entrepreneurial opportunities in India.

Abstract

Agriculture is the backbone of India’s economic development and has experienced immense growth in the past few decades. Agriculture not only involves the participation of male workers but also experiences active participation of all family members, as well. Women, as part of the family, take up agricultural activities as an extension to their household chores. The Government and voluntary agencies have also recognised the need for women in the farming community to become self-reliant and active participants in the agricultural sector. Increasing awareness and educating themselves with the passage of time, farmers have made themselves aware of new techniques of farming and growing and established themselves as agricultural entrepreneurs in the long run. Many initiatives supporting women entrepreneurs and creating a supportive ecosystem for women to become agricultural entrepreneurs have been initiated by the state. The case of Anita Devi popularly known as the Mushroom Lady of Bihar has been taken up in this paper to substantiate with evidence how government initiatives have helped her gain success and grow as an agricultural entrepreneur. This study aims at disseminating how such initiatives help in creating an ecosystem that motivates agricultural entrepreneurs in general and women in particular.

ABSTRACT

Marketers make consistent attempts to innovate tools and strategies to overcome the challenges they face in the business arena. Business innovations are broadly classified under two heads, namely Product / Service innovation. Marketers need to design creative solutions to overcome challenges typical of the rural environment such as physical distribution, channel management, promotion and communication. India’s rural markets offer a sea of opportunity. The urban rural split in consumer spending stands at 9: 11, with rural India accounting for 55 percent of private retail consumption. Indeed the market can be tapped with focused attention and strategy. Currently the Indian retail market is estimated at Rs. 13,30,000 crore and almost half of this growing retail market at present lies in rural India, which is a tremendous growth sector that needs to be tapped with care. This paper examines how the corporate sectors with their innovation and creativity tapping the Indian rural market with their retail marketing.

Abstract

Sustainable development and success in any field, agriculture being one of them, goes hand in hand with Innovation. To tackle the current growing problems in the agricultural sector, and long-term sustainability of the agri-ecosystem, agricultural innovations are needed that might bring new products or processes or open up new markets, thereby optimising the use of the limited resources to attain maximum benefits. The authors discuss innovation from the perspective of two dimensions: Technology and Market to illustrate four different kinds of innovation - incremental, architectural, radial and descriptive. This paper deals with the concept of innovation in agricultural field [referred to as agri-innovation] using illustrations of two innovative products namely Dragon Fruit and Water Hyacinth, both of which have significant role in the agri-ecosystem of India. The introduction of Dragon Fruit in a new market is illustrated as an agri-innovation. Efforts by state and private sector of introducing Dragon Fruit, a popular production in South & South East Asia to Indian markets are an example of Architectural Innovation. Also the most common weed Water Hyacinth is considered to be used in news forms so that it can be modified as a new product for a new market. The paper thus documents the suitability of these innovative agri-products in the current Indian market scenario.

Innovations in Field Extension

Farmer Field Schools - ANew Participatory Approach

Abstract

Access to reliable and affordable irrigation is one of the most important enablers to increase agricultural productivity and income for farmers. An innovative Manual Axis Tracking Solar Pump model and its utility in providing affordable irrigation has been discussed in this paper. The proposed Manual Axis Tracking Solar Pump can increase output on an average 8%-12% more than fixed panel and is much cheaper than automated tracking. This paper deliberates upon the technical features that make the Manual Axis Tracking Solar Pump an advantage over its nearest competitor, the diesel pump. Government of India has already introduced various subsidy-based solar pump schemes and most of them are not popular because of low discharge issue. The low discharge issue can be solved by this proposed optimum tilt-based Manual Tracking Solar Pump, whose sustainable market penetration is suggested through various strategies in the paper, supported by case studies. The proposed entrepreneurship model not only opens a new era of agricultural business but also helps to reduce the GHG emissions.

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research is the apex body for co-coordinating, guiding and managing research and education in agriculture including horticulture, fisheries and animal sciences in the entire country with more than hundred and above ICAR libraries and fifty six state agricultural universities libraries spread across the country this is one of the largest national agricultural library network in the in the country under consortium of e-Resources in Agriculture. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has contributed a lot towards strengthening of Agricultural Libraries via modern Information Technological (IT) tools. ICAR has sanctioned so many projects under National Agricultural Technology Project and National Agricultural Innovative Projects i.e e-Granth, CeRA, Krishiprabha, Krishikosh Agricat etc. for strengthening and development of agricultural libraries. These are useful to manage knowledge explosion and helpful in libraries to providing information effectively to the end user of society.

This person is required to help the beneficiaries interact with the technical personnel, administrators, etc. as co-equal partners. The Government of India has established a comprehensive institutional framework to promote natural farming through various schemes and initiatives that provide financial support, technical assistance, and policy backing to farmers transitioning from conventional to sustainable agricultural practices. These government interventions represent a strategic shift toward recognizing natural farming as a viable solution to address environmental degradation, input cost escalation, and farmer distress while enhancing agricultural sustainability and food security. The National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF) represents the flagship government initiative specifically designed to promote chemical-free and climate-smart agriculture across the country. The Union Cabinet approved the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF) on 25th November 2024 as a standalone Centrally Sponsored Scheme under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, with a target to initiate one crore farmers into natural farming over the next two years. 1. Introduction

Higher educational institutions especially the agricultural universities and institutes have multifaceted mandate which includes teaching, research and extension. Scientific information is generated at rapid pace in the form of research papers, project reports, conference/Seminar proceedings, Theses/ Dissertations, books and so on. It is necessary to manage, preserve and share the intellectual output to the academic community for innovations and betterment of the society. Technological developments, open access and open archive movements have facilitated easy access to information. Open access literature available in public domain removes access as well as price barriers. Realizing the importance of preserving valuable digital and print material of an institution idea of developing institutional repositories was invigorated. It is online digital content free of cost and mostly free from restrictions of copyright and licensing. In other words, it is royalty free literature which can be applied to any digital content that are born digital or the older works digitized later in life. Researchers are not well aware of the various channels to enhance the visibility of their work such as scholarly journals and conferences. Further they don’t identify existing library provisions that could help them to share their work on different platforms due to lack of awareness about it. So there is need to create awareness among masses about the institutional repositories and its role in disseminating scientific output of an institution. Institutional repositories are the need of hour for to showcase the research output of an institution.

Introduction

Entrepreneurship has a significant impact on the country’s economic growth and standard of living. As a start-up founder or small business owner, the person contributes not only towards oneself but also towards the local community, state, region, and country. Starting a new venture requires resources and facilities. Small scale enterprises generally find it difficult to have these resources and facilities of their own. Adequate finance is life and blood to start and run enterprises as it facilitates an entrepreneur to have enough funds to procure land, labour, materials, plant, machinery etc. Recognizing it, the government has come forward to support small entrepreneurs by providing them funds and other needed facilities.

In India, several institutions are working towards women’s empowerment and gender equality. The Ministry of Women and Child Development is the nodal agency responsible for promoting women’s rights and empowerment. The National Commission for Women (NCW) is another statutory body that works to protect and promote women’s rights. Additionally, there are various autonomous organizations such as the National Institute for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development (NIESBUD), the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE), and the Women’s Technology Park (WTP) that provide training and support to women entrepreneurs. Furthermore, there are numerous non-governmental organizations (NGOs) such as the Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), the All India Women’s Conference (AIWC), and the YWCA of India that work towards women’s empowerment and gender equality. These institutions provide a range of services including education, healthcare, legal aid, and economic empowerment programs to support women’s development and well-being.

The most significant achievement in India after independence is the self-reliance in food grain production. The use of high yielding varieties, irrigation facilities, higher application of fertilizers & pesticides contributed to sufficient food grain production in the mid 60’s & 70’s of the last century. Later on development in other enterprises like dairy, poultry, piggery, fishery, sericulture etc., took place in an isolated manner. However, the productivity of these high yielding varieties and hybrids became stagnant during last decade and with limited scope for increasing the cultivable land, the country’s food security is likely to be threatened in the near future. According to a recent estimate the food grain requirement of India would be 380 and 450 million tons in the years 2025 & 2050 respectively with the present rate of population growth. On the other hand, despite significant breakthrough in food production the living standards of farmers are far from satisfaction; this situation is matter of great concern for the country. The farmers are losing confidence in farming due to declining returns; hence majority of them prefers to shift to non-agricultural vocations. If this trend continues in future, the potential to satisfy future food needs will be seriously compromised. Agriculture continues to be the pivotal sector in the Indian economy providing employment to 69 per cent of the population.

The coastal zone of Karnataka is marked by highly fragmented agriculture land with more than 70 per cent of the land holders belonging to small and marginal farmer categories. Though the average annual rainfall received in the zone is 4000mm, the kharif season crops suffer from submergence and lodging.  The rabi/summer crops fail due to low soil residual moisture because of high percolation loss and poor water holding capacity of soils. Thus, the returns from the land is very less resulting in migration of youngsters mainly to the Arab countries as well as the neighbouring states in search of a job. In this situation, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore through Extension Education Unit, Mangalore has demonstrated the Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts to show that the IFS is profitable, sustainable and can secure the livelihood. The demonstrations were taken up in each farmer’sfield continuously for three consecutive years.

To analyze the impact of these demonstrations, case studies of three IFS demonstrated farmers were done during 2007 with the objective of documenting the farming systems demonstrated and the current farming systems practiced by the farmers; to analyze the income and employment generated and their impact on their socio-economic status. The yearwise documentation of the subsystems of the farming systems practiced by each farmer and the net income, percent increase of income over benchmark year, employment generation, cropping intensity, B:C ratio were analyzed. The results of the case studies are presented below.

Abstract

The green revolution concentrated only on a single enterprise, the crop.  Later on, developments in other enterprises like dairy, poultry, piggery, fishery, etc took place, however in an isolated manner.  Now it is essential to diversify the economic activities in an interdependent and integrated manner at micro level within the available resources. The system thus developed will be termed as integrated farming system approach.  This helps in generating sustained, stable farm income and higher employment. To achieve these objectives, several extension programmers were designed and conducted in integrated farming system demonstration undertaken by the Extension Education Unit of University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore in close association with other subject matter specialists. The programmes were implemented in selected taluks of Eastern Dry Zone of Karnataka. One such case study is presented here.

India is predominately a agriculture based country, wherein 85 per cent of the land holding are small and marginal. The per capita availability of land has been decreased from 0.5 ha in 1950-51 to 0.15 ha by the turn of the century and a projected future decline to less than 0.1 ha by 2020. This decline in trend in size of land holding poses a serious challenge to sustainability and profitability of the farming. The population is steadily growing without any possibility of increase in land area. The income from cropenterprise for an a average farmer is hardly sufficient to sustain his family. But the farmer has assured of a regular income for a reasonable standard of living by including other enterprises. The integrated farming system (IFS) seems to be the solution to continue to increase the demand for food production, stability of income and improvement of nutritional status of family members.
 
Agriculture in this millennium, due to emerging production scenario, higher economic growth, population explosion and shifts in dietary pattern has changed the supply and demand profiles of food respectively. Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) seems to be the possible solution to meet the continuous increase in demand for food, stability of income and diverse requirements of food grains, vegetables, milk, egg, meat etc., thereby improving the nutrition of the small-scale farmers with limited resources.

Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) represent a holistic and sustainable approach to agriculture that seeks to maximize resource efficiency, environmental conservation and economic viability by integrating various agricultural enterprises within a farm. The concept hinges on the synergistic interactions between crops, livestock, aquaculture, agroforestry and other components, ensuring that waste from one system serves as input for another, thus minimizing resource wastage and enhancing productivity. IFS promote diversification, reducing dependency on a single crop or product and thereby mitigating risks associated with market and climate fluctuations. By incorporating livestock and aquaculture, IFS enhance nutrient cycling and soil fertility through the recycling of organic matter and manure. Agroforestry practices within IFS contribute to soil conservation, water management, and biodiversity enhancement, creating a resilient agricultural ecosystem. The economic benefits of IFS are notable, with diversified income streams providing financial stability to farmers. The reduced need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides, owing to natural nutrient cycling and pest control, also contributes to cost savings and environmental health. Additionally, IFS support food security by producing a variety of food products, from grains and vegetables to meat and fish, on the same farm. The successful implementation of IFS requires careful planning and knowledge integration, ensuring that the various components harmonize and contribute positively to the overall system. Despite challenges such as initial investment costs and the need for technical expertise, IFS offer a viable pathway towards sustainable agriculture, balancing productivity with ecological and economic sustainability.

Homestead is a small scale, supplementary food production system; it has the potential to produce high value crops including various spices condiments by and large for the household members. A typical home garden is an adjunct to the house, where selected trees, shrubs are grown, not only edible fruits / vegetables, but also for medicinal, ornamental, socioeconomic and ecological benefits. Homestead exhibit a multi tired canopy structure somewhat identical to the tropical evergreen forest formations. The vertical stratification provides a gradient in light and relative humidity, which creates different niches for enabling various spices/groups to exploit them .Mostly shade tolerant crops constitute the lower stratum, the shade intolerant trees the layer and spices with varying degree of shade tolerance in the intermediate strata .These multi strata system are structurally and functionally the closest mimics of natural forests yet attained The structural and floristic diversity of tropical home gardens are perhaps aided by the biophysical environment, socio-culture factors and economic consideration.

There is an emergence of the concept of a Circular Economy as one of the transformational approaches toward sustainability, where greater emphasis is laid on rethinking and redesigning products and services for maximum resource efficiency. In contrast to the traditional linear model ("take, make, dispose"), CE emphasizes product reuse, recycling, and cascading with the clear ambition of closing the loop of product lifecycles through continuous recovery of resources. The key to this solution involves changing the paradigm, highly relevant to resolving pressing environmental issues facing the planet such as resource depletion, waste management, and climate change.

Conventionally regarded as information stores, libraries are increasing awareness of their potential to create an impact toward sustainable practices. Centres of information and meeting points for communities, libraries are at an advantageous position for leading by example in integrating the principles of CE into their system. This paper examines the current status of integrating the circular economy principles within library management and discusses a proposed conceptual framework that aims to guide libraries in adopting circular practices. The paper addresses the contribution that libraries might make to a more sustainable future by exploring the intersection between CE and library management through innovative practices and strategic plans.

Learning Management Systems (LMSs) have become central to digital education by providing platforms for content delivery, communication, assessment, learner tracking, and academic administration. Integrating Generative AI into these systems can transform conventional LMS environments into more intelligent, adaptive, and responsive learning ecosystems. This chapter examines the integration of GenAI with LMS platforms and other educational technologies to support personalized instruction, automated content generation, intelligent assessment, student support, and learning analytics. AI can generate explanations, quizzes, summaries, learning activities, and feedback while using learner-performance information to recommend individualized pathways. Integration with digital whiteboards, productivity platforms, chatbots, interactive content, and other EdTech tools can provide students with immediate assistance and multiple explanations of difficult concepts. For educators, these systems can support course design, assessment development, progress monitoring, and instructional decision-making. However, implementation involves technical challenges such as API compatibility, computing requirements, real-time data processing, legacy-system integration, infrastructure limitations, and shortage of skilled personnel. Regulatory issues involving privacy, intellectual property, misinformation, bias, and liability must also be addressed. Successful LMS integration therefore requires robust infrastructure, governance, interoperability, human oversight, and continuous evaluation.

The integration of all components of community mobilization for natural farming represents a complex, multidimensional process that requires systematic coordination across social, institutional, technological, and economic domains to create coherent and sustainable agricultural transformation. This integration transcends simple coordination of activities to encompass the development of synergistic relationships between different mobilization elements that collectively enhance the effectiveness, sustainability, and scalability of natural farming adoption while building resilient communities capable of ongoing innovation and adaptation. Systems thinking approaches provide the conceptual foundation for integration by recognizing that community mobilization components function as interconnected elements within broader social-ecological systems rather than isolated interventions. This perspective emphasizes understanding the relationships, feedback loops, and emergent properties that arise from component interactions while designing interventions that strengthen system coherence and resilience. Systems approaches require analyzing how training programs, institutional support, communication strategies, and policy frameworks influence each other 

In the evolving landscape of agricultural sciences, integrative research models have emerged as a cornerstone for addressing complex, multifaceted challenges. These models bridge the gap between theoretical frameworks and their practical applications, ensuring that innovations are not just conceptual but also actionable and impactful. This chapter delves into the essence of integrative research models, highlighting their significance, successful case studies, and strategies to foster their adoption and effectiveness in agricultural progress.

Intellectual property rights (IPR) are legal mechanisms thaprovide creators with exclusive rights to use, manage, and profit from their creations. These rights help protect the interests of innovators and promote continued creativity and innovation.
Intellectual Property Rights refer to the legal entitlements granted to individuals or organizations over their creative and intellectual works, such as patents, trademarks, and copyrights. These rights grant exclusive control or usage privileges for a specific duration, often creating a temporary monopoly. While the concept of intellectual property began to take shape in the 19th century, it was only during the 20th century that it was formally integrated into global legal frameworks.
Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) safeguard the creations of the human mind, such as inventions, artistic and literary works, brand names, logos, designs, and images used in commerce. These rights help foster innovation by allowing creators and inventors to benefit economically from their work.

Introduction

In India, the concept of commercialization of technology from R&D is relatively new in most sectors; especially in agriculture & animal Husbandry. The Government of India has recently announced the “National Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) policy (GOI, 2016a). The policy advocates promotion of a holistic and conducive ecosystem for catalyzing the intellectual property for economic, socio-cultural development and protecting public interest. The policy document put forth seven objectives namely i) IPR awareness: outreach and promotion, ii) generation of IPRs, iii) legal and legislative framework, iv) administrative management, v) commercialization of IPR, vi) enforcement and adjudication and vii) human capital development. The policy aims at strengthening the national initiatives such as- Make in India, Skill India, Startup India, Smart Cities, Digital India (GOI, 2016). The flagship program of the Government like Startup India aims at building a strong ecosystem for nurturing innovations and Start-ups in the country (GOI, 2016). Under this, Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) is the action plan envisaged with the focus on promotion of entrepreneurship and innovation in sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, health and education (GOI, 2016).

Intellectual property is a cluster of legally recognized rights associated with innovation and creativity, the works of the mind, as against physical products, land and other tangible resources. Even though it is intangible, intellectual property (IP) is often recognized as personal property, to be sold and traded like other forms of property. Under intellectual property law, owners are granted certain exclusive rights to various markets, machines, musical, literary, and artistic works; discoveries and inventions; and applications. But national laws normally don’t define ‘intellectual property’ as a single property right. Instead, ‘intellectual property’ is used as a convenient general term describing a range of distinct legal rights, relating to literary, artistic and scientific works; performances of performing artists; phonograms, and broadcasts; inventions in all fields of human endeavour; scientific discoveries; industrial designs; trademarks, service marks, and commercial names and designations; protection against unfair competition and all other rights resulting from intellectual activity in the industrial, scientific, literary or artistic fields.

Abstract

Trade Related Agreements on Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) widely affects the agricultural sector which is largely unorganised in India. At the same time this sector remains the bread winner for majority of the population of the country. The Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) affect the extensive and intensive margins in agricultural trade. This paper draws attention of enterprises in the field of agricultural biotechnology which has genetic modification (GM) as one of its core activity. GM is of benefit in terms of value additive features but also of great concern for the community in conservation of biodiversity. Food & Agricultural Organisation (FAO), being aware of the pitfalls of implementing IPRs in agriculture, constituted an expert panel to study the issues pertaining to the sector. They came up with very clear directives to the FAO on the course of action. This paper aims to focus on this area to identify the micro-level dynamics of IPRs in agriculture and its effects on the rural enterprises in India. The impact of IPRs and its ramifications, the issues of agricultural productivity and its future trajectory, are to be understood from the perspective of an entrepreneur’s policy decisions. This will lead to identification of policies that would help in harnessing IPRs for the growth of Indian agriculture.

Introduction

Soil, water and vegetation are three basic natural resources. The survival of God’s creation depends upon them and nature has provided them as assets to human beings. The management of natural resources to meet people’s requirements has been practised since the pre-Vedic era. Farmers were ranked high in the social system and village management was in their hands. Over-exploitation of natural resources by growing population resulted in various severe problems. Destruction of vegetation has resulted in land degradation, denudation, soil erosion, landslides, floods, drought and unbalanced ecosystems. A balanced ecosystem is an urgent need.

There is an increasing realization throughout the world, about the state of our environment, caused by over-exploitation of natural resources for economic development. Resource exploitation in the developing world has largely been geared to meet the very basic needs of food, fodder, fuelwood and shelter of a large section of deprived societies. On the other hand, developed parts of the world have largely concerned themselves in trying to maintain and accelerate the already very high levels of resource consumption that they have achieved for a much smaller segment of the world’s population, based on an early initiative taken and advantage gained through industrialization. Natural resource base has often viewed as limitless by the industrialized world either due to a myopic view of the future or because of their immense faith in technology being able to substitute for the natural resource capital. This faith in technological quick-fixes for world’s problems linked with over-consumption is still prevalent.

Extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, droughts, and floods, have become increasingly frequent and intense in recent years, posing significant threats to agricultural productivity, food security, and rural livelihoods. The impacts of extreme weather events can be devastating, resulting in crop failures, livestock deaths, and damage to infrastructure and property. Traditional approaches to dealing with extreme weather events have often focused on top-down, expertdriven solutions, where external experts provide advice and guidance to farmers and rural communities on how to prepare for and respond to extreme weather events. However, these approaches have often been criticized for being ineffective, unsustainable, and neglecting the needs and perspectives of local communities.
In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of interactive community approaches for dealing with extreme weather events. These approaches involve working closely with local communities to identify their needs, priorities, and capacities for dealing with extreme weather events. They also involve empowering local communities to take ownership of their own disaster risk reduction and management efforts, through the provision of training, resources, and support.
A critical component of these interactive community approaches is the development and implementation of Early Warning Systems (EWS). EWS are designed to provide timely and accurate warnings to communities about impending extreme weather events, allowing them to take necessary precautions to minimize losses and protect their lives and livelihoods (Fig.8.1).

Interactive media is the integration of digital media including combinations of electronic text, graphics, moving images, and sound, into a structured digital computerised environment that allows people to interact with the data for appropriate purposes. The digital environment can include the Internet, telecoms and interactive digital television. No wonder it is difficult for new entrants to understand. The important concepts to hold on to are ‘interactive’ and ‘media’ across a range of ‘delivery channels’ or ‘platforms’. There are many terms used to denote the interactive nature of digital applications—multimedia, new media and interactive design are common examples. Because the interactive sector has quickly evolved through phases, the terms have often been coined to reflect a phase that then gets surpassed. A quick historical overview will give the background that causes confusion for those joining the dynamic sector.

The word Multimedia used to have a specialist connotation for the audio-visual industry. Uses of multiple or mixed media in such analogue systems as slide shows or overhead projectors were known as ‘multimedia’. But this specialist use was superseded by the arrival of digital technology. Integrated digital media was termed interactive multimedia and usually shortened to plain multimedia for convenience. The need to differentiate between analogue (linear) and digital (interactive) uses of media spawned other terms like New Media and Digital Media. The term ‘New media’ carries its own problems as the media associated with the original term are replaced with newer instances of the ‘new’. Obsolescence is endemic in the interactive arena. However, the term remains in use although Digital Media and Interactive Media are more stable terms and are being used increasingly. The term Interactive Media highlights the interactive connotation that is a key characteristic of the difference between the older style media and the new. ‘Social media’ has evolved to describe the more recent success of digital social sites such as Facebook and MySpace, and would include the phenomenon of mobile texting, especially twitter.

What is an IVR

IVR or Interactive Voice Response is a technology that automates interaction of a database with telephone callers. Enterprises are increasingly turning to IVR to reduce the cost of common sales, service, collections, inquiry and support calls to and from their company.

IVR solutions are generally used with pre-recorded voice prompts and menus to present information and options to callers, and touch-tone telephone keypad entry to gather responses. Modern IVR solutions however, also enable input and responses to be gathered via spoken words with voice recognition.

IVR solutions enable users to retrieve information including bank balances, flight schedules, product details, order status, movie show times, and more from any telephone. Additionally, IVR solutions are increasingly used to place outbound calls to deliver or gather information for appointments, past due bills, and other time critical events and activities.

In previous sections we discussed about the validity and estimation of validity. Now the question is whether the reliable and valid measuring instrument is sufficient condition to ensure the reliable and valid results in actual experiments? What if the measuring instruments are perfectly reliable and valid but the experiment is conducted in less controlled conditions? Can we expect accurate predictions under such conditions? The answer is No.

Internet of Things (IoT) is networking of physical objects, devices, machines, systems etc to interconnect each other for exchanging data through standard internet protocols. The IoT is also termed as Machine-to-Machine (M-to-M) communication. The term ‘Things’ in IoT includes objects embedded with sensors, actuators, mobile phones, routers, hubs, computers, wearable’s and smart devices etc.

ABSTRACT
  
The present study was conducted with 100 internet users in Lahowal CIC and Barbaruah CIC in Dibrugarh district of Assam to critically analyze the various aspects of internet utilization pattern. Results showed that majority (66%) of the respondents were between 18 to 26 years of age and were students (50%). Education qualification of majority of the respondents (32%) was above seventh standard and below graduation and seventy per cent were above graduation and below post graduation and also undergone training in computer.

For Understanding Interpersonal Behaviors, Behavioral scientists recommend the use of Johari Window & Transactional Analysis (TA).

Johari Window is a psychological too created by Joseph Luft& Harry Ingham in 1955 in USA.. It helps people to understand their better interpersonal relations & communication. The Johari Window model is also referred to as a ‘disclosure/feedback model of self-awareness’, and by some people an ‘information processing tool’. The Johari Window actually represents information - feelings, experience, views, attitudes, skills, intentions, motivation, etc - within or about a person - in relation to their group, from four perspectives. Johari window four quadrants: 1. what is known by the person about him/herself and is also known by others - open area, open self, free area, free self, or ‘the arena’. 2. what is unknown by the person about him/herself but which others know - blind area, blind self, or ‘blind spot‘. 3. what the person knows about him/herself that others do not know - hidden area, hidden self, avoided area, avoided self or ‘facade‘. 4. What is unknown by the person about him/herself and is also unknown by others - unknown area or unknown self.

Interpersonal communication verbally non-verbally symbolic, disclosive, transitional, and multifunctional and that it can be either intentional or unintentional.

Patton and Giffin (1974) suggest that interpersonal communication is really no different from other forms of communication with the exception that it occurs only a face to face setting.

Stewart and Angelo (1975) suggest that communication becomes interpersonal when people are comfortable in sharing rather than prediction or influencing.

The Johari Window Concept of Interpersonal Communication (Luft, 1963-1970)

Interpersonal communication is the means by which we expand our Quadrant I. As Luft suggest, some people may get along fine with other people without in sight or awareness but such lack of awareness inhibits our communication effectiveness and impede our personal growth.

Characteristics of Interpersonal Communication

i. In interpersonal communication, both the generator and attributor of meaning must be present.

ii. In case of interpersonal communication, the face to face interaction between people who are consistently aware of each other.

iii. Each person in interpersonal communication assumes roles as both sender and receiver of message. iv. Interpersonal communication cannot transport without the presence and awareness of parties involved.

Interview method: It is a two way interactive (either face-to-face or through multimedia technology), method of data collection wherein the researchers elicit required response from the respondent by presenting stimulus in the form of series of questions pertinent to it.

Interview schedule: It is a data collection tool consisting of properly worded, sequentially arranged questions, tests relevant to objective of research.

World’s population is continuously on the rise, triggering the demand for food. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO, 2011) observed that 70% increase in food production will be needed to sustain the globe’s population by 2050. Though, increase in agricultural production and productivity is said to be the panacea to solve food security issues, the greatest challenge that need to be addressed is the inefficiencies in the supply chain; instigated by insufficient storage capacities and perishability of food products. Food preservation and processing is highlighted in this context, as it serves to conserve/improve the quality and reduce food loss due to wastage as well as add nutritional security.

Concept of Entrepreneur

An entrepreneur is an economic man who seeks to maximize revenues by identifying and adopting innovations. However, entrepreneurs are willing to take risks and create change by organising human efforts. Entrepreneurs are vital to the country’s economic growth. Entrepreneurial development as a component of economic growth has long been acknowledged.

Starting from the basics, etymologically, the word entrepreneur comes from the French word “entreprendre”, which means “to do something”, and, in the Middle Era, it was originally used in the sense of a person who is active, who gets things done. The study of entrepreneurship reaches back to work in the late 17^th and early 18^th centuries of Irish-French economist Richard Cantillon. “Entrepreneur” is a French word that first appeared in the French dictionary entitled Dictionnaire Universel de Commerce, compiled by Jacques des Bruslons and published in 1723. Richard Cantillon’s 1755 work “Essai sur la nature du commerce en general” changed the entrepreneurial concept. Risk has been used to identify entrepreneurs since ancient times. In India, entrepreneurship means Udyog.

Concept of Evaluation

Evaluation is the structured interpretation and giving of meaning to predict or actual impacts of proposals or results. It looks at original objectives, and at what are either predicted or what was accomplished and how it was accomplished.

Context Based Meaning and Concept

The meaning of evaluation is the way of judging or calculating the quality, importance, amount, or value of something: Evaluation of this new treatment cannot take place until all the data has been collected.

In its earliest uses (documented in the 15th century), context meant “the weaving together of words in language.” This sense, now obsolete, developed logically from the word’s source in Latin, contexere “to weave or join together.

Evaluation is an essential tool in both public and private sectors, allowing organizations to measure their performance against predefined benchmarks. It serves as a crucial mechanism for accountability, ensuring that resources are utilized effectively to achieve intended goals. Moreover, evaluation fosters transparency by offering objective insights into the successes and shortcomings of initiatives, thereby reinforcing stakeholder trust and engagement. There are several types of evaluation, each serving a distinct purpose.
