Climate change refers to a change of climate that is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity that alters the composition of the global atmosphere and that is in addition to natural climate variability observed over comparable time periods (FCCC).

From a demographic perspective, nearly 17% of households are women, higher than the national data (~11%). The main reason for this shift is migration other than divorce, separation or widowhood.

Water is present in snow, glaciers, wetlands, and rivers in the mountains. They supply watersheds by providing groundwater recharge to hill communities and communities living in vast basin areas (Hua, 2009). Whatever happens in these mountains affect nearly 1.2 billion people, one-fifth of the world’s population living in the river basins, and up to three billion indirectly in food and energy production. Despite harbouring some of nature’s richest natural resources, mountains are home to some of the world’s poorest people, many of whom are marginalized subsistence farmers. These communities living in the mountain region have hardly benefited from the ‘green revolution’ and global economic growth.

After Second World War or after independence, it was thought to settle all these problems properly and so, many development programmes were reinvigorated. This Training and Visit system was developed by World Bank Expert Daniel Benor. Initially (13) Major states in India adopted Training and Visit system but later on most of the states are practicing this system since 1984 onwards.

High use of developed crop varieties, irrigation, chemical fertilizers, pesticides and farm mechanization is the main thrust of modern agriculture. Therefore, modern agriculture is an energy intensive farming system (Khan et al., 2010). Though modern technology based agriculture is achieving success to meet food demand of increasing global population, yet it creates many environmental issues such as loss of soil fertility, salinization and water scarcity.

The birth of modern conventional agriculture coincides with industrial revolution. The identification of N, P and K as critical factors in plant growth led to the manufacture of synthetic fertilizers. While chemical fertilizers and pesticides have existed since the 19th century, their use grew significantly in the early 20 century with the invention of Haber-Bosch method for synthesizing ammonia. Sustainability embodies an ecological vision aimed at fostering enduring human coexistence on Earth. Over time, its definition has evolved in literature and context, generating ongoing debate. Generally, experts frame sustainability around three pillars: social, economic, and environmental. While environmental concerns often dominate discussions, sustainability encompasses broader challenges like pollution, land degradation, biodiversity loss, climate change, and ecosystem service decline. This concept influences decision-making globally, politically, and personally.

Sustainable development, often used interchangeably with sustainability, is distinguished by UNESCO as a long-term objective versus the diverse processes and pathways to achieve it. Within the economic dimension, the tension between welfare and environmental preservation is explored through concepts like “weak and strong sustainability,” acknowledging the necessity of trade-offs. Ideal policies would aim to decouple environmental degradation from economic growth.

Introduction

The history and evolution of extension in India during the Pre- independence and Post- independence periods have been narrated in Chapter 2. The major breakthrough in Agricultural Extension was the introduction of the T&V system with WB support from 1977 to 1997. The system tried to establish a strong linkage between the research and extension. Technical messages received from research stations were transferred to the farmers through an organized extension system at fixed time intervals and obtained feedback from the farmers about the technologies. However, the system was constrained by structural problems at organizational level. The system adopted a classical top- down approach and the recommendations were suitable for irrigated areas bypassing the rain- fed areas. After the withdrawal of support from WB, the T&V system was constrained by the paucity of funds to manage the manpower created, and the unpaid farmers did not continue to work. After withdrawal, it was considered necessary to make the extension more demand- driven, participatory, group extension, and farmer- centric with possible convergence for which extension reform in India was necessary.

Extension reform in India

There are many countries where extension and advisory services reforms are occurring globally (Swanson and Rajalahti 2010; World Bank 2012). Since agro- ecological conditions and access to markets vary within most countries, decentralized extension system was needed. It was considered that decentralized and demand- driven extension allows farmers to participate in setting the agenda and demanding extension and research priorities. The extension reforms made the system reach the smallholders, resource- poor, and women, and also focused on sustainability. When the donor funds dry up or the pilot projects end, the farmers no longer have access to the extension services (Birner and Anderson 2007). Therefore the public extension needs to be sustainable in extension services delivery.

Development of processing industry takes care of surplus produce as well as of those fruits that are of lower quality. With the development of processing industry citrus fruits can be utilized for the production of wide range of commercial products. The large variability in physico-chemical characteristics of citrus fruits provides an opportunity to select desirable types for commercial exploitation. In India citrus fruit is available in large quantity that can be processed in to different processed products very easily. The fresh citrus fruits are not consumed in large quantity as fresh fruit due to high acidic in taste. Abstract
Managing weeds in agricultural productivity poses a formidable challenge. An increasingly common weed control strategy in ecologically friendly farming systems is integrated weed management, which involves bioherbicides. Ensuring global food security and environmental safety heavily relies on the sustainability of agricultural production. Worldwide, sustainable agricultural approaches, including the maintenance of a permanent layer of soil cover, the minimization of soil disruption, the implementation of regular crop rotations, the practice of integrated weed control, and the adoption of conservation agriculture, are becoming increasingly popular. Bio-herbicides are commonly derived from plants containing phytotoxic allelochemicals or specialized bacteria that can induce diseases and reduce the population of weeds within a given area. However, bio-herbicides have demonstrated significant potential in inhibiting the germination and spread of weed seeds. Bio-herbicides offer a promising, environmentally friendly, promising solution for weed control, as they are derived from natural sources such as bacteria, plants, or biochemical compounds. This study investigates the effectiveness, environmental benefits, and challenges of using bio-herbicides to achieve sustainable weed control. Bio-herbicides possess the capacity to reduce dependency on artificial pesticides, eradicate unintended harm to non-target organisms, and foster a more harmonious ecosystem by employing biological agents to target particular weeds selectively.

1.1 Weather Forecasting
Farmers have always been at the mercy of the weather, and accurate forecasting has become an essential tool for their decision-making process. Weather forecasts play a critical role in supporting farmers’ decision-making processes, from crop planning and management to harvest planning and economic decision-making. Crop planning and management is one of the key areas where weather forecasts are crucial. Farmers use weather forecasts to determine the best time to plant seeds, taking into account temperature, moisture, and sunlight requirements. This enables them to choose crops that are suitable for the predicted weather conditions. Additionally, forecasts help farmers optimize irrigation, reducing water waste and ensuring crops receive adequate moisture (Fig.1.1).
Weather forecasts also help farmers mitigate weather-related risks. Extreme weather events like floods, droughts, heat waves, and storms can have devastating effects on crops. Accurate forecasts enable farmers to prepare for and respond to these events, reducing crop damage and loss. For instance, forecasts help farmers take measures to protect crops from frost and freeze damage, which can be catastrophic for certain crops.

The rhythm of life for a significant portion of the world‘s population is intrinsically linked to the cyclical patterns of monsoons. These seasonal winds, predominantly experienced within the tropics between 20° North and 20° South latitude, dictate not only the climate but also the agricultural productivity across vast regions spanning South Asia, East Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas. This dependence is starkly highlighted by the fact that a considerable proportion of the world‘s arable land relies solely on rainfall, with monsoons being the primary source of this vital resource. In India alone, for instance, nearly half of the agricultural land is rainfed, a figure indicative of the broader reliance on monsoonal patterns in many other nations within these regions. Agriculture, the primary source of livelihood for many in these monsooninfluenced areas, remains heavily dependent on the timely arrival and consistent behavior of these rains. The delicate dance between the monsoon and agricultural cycles has shaped cultural practices, economic structures, and societal well-being for centuries. It is estimated that a substantial percentage of global agricultural production is reliant on monsoonal rainfall, underscoring the profound impact these weather systems have on food security and economic stability worldwide. The variability of monsoons – in terms of onset, intensity, duration, and spatial distribution – directly translates into fluctuations in crop yields, impacting everything from local food supplies and farmer incomes to national economies and international trade. Beyond the economic implications, the social vulnerability associated with monsoon variability cannot be overstated. Communities that depend on rainfed agriculture are particularly susceptible to the vagaries of the monsoon. Delayed or weak monsoons can lead to widespread crop failures, resulting in food shortages, economic hardship, and even migration. Conversely, excessively heavy rains can cause devastating floods, destroying crops, infrastructure, and livelihoods. Therefore, understanding, monitoring, and, crucially, forecasting the behavior of monsoons is not merely an academic exercise but a critical necessity for ensuring the prosperity and resilience of a significant portion of the global population. This chapter delves into the intricate world of monsoon forecasting, exploring its historical roots, the scientific principles that underpin it, the diverse methodologies employed, and the continuous efforts being made to enhance its accuracy and utility. 4.1 Phases of technology transfer
To translate laboratory research into market ready product, it is important to understand steps or phases involved in this technology transfer process. The process typically includes six main phases, each with a different role (figure 9).
4.1.1 Research
Technology transfer begins with research, the critical stage of exploring and discovering novel knowledge, technologies, or innovations that may have potential commercial applications. The research phase can occur in academic institutions, research organizations, or private sector companies, often funded by public or private sources. Thorough research ensures that the technologies being transitioned are scientifically and technically robust, thereby increasing their potential for market success. Therefore, the research phase involves creating and evaluating new ideas, confirming their feasibility, and identifying IP prospects, all of which are key components of TT success.
4.1.2 Innovation disclosure
Innovation disclosure is the first formal step where the innovation is reported to the appropriate TTO or IP management team. This process ensures that the institution or organization recognizes the innovation and evaluates its potential for protection and commercialization. It includes following information:

This classical reference captures the essence of mentoring as a relationship built on wisdom sharing, guidance provision, and developmental support that extends beyond mere instruction or supervision.

Contemporary definitions of mentoring emphasize its multifaceted nature as both a relationship and a process that serves developmental functions for mentees while often providing reciprocal benefits for mentors. The essence of training lies in its purposeful nature, distinguishing it from informal learning or casual instruction by its structured approach to achieving specific learning objectives within defined timeframes and contexts. The contemporary definition of training has evolved from narrow skill-based instruction to encompass broader developmental approaches that address cognitive, emotional, and behavioral dimensions of human performance. Modern training is understood as a strategic organizational investment that enhances individual capability while supporting broader business objectives such as productivity improvement, quality enhancement, innovation promotion, and competitive advantage development. The integration of all components of community mobilization for natural farming represents a complex, multidimensional process that requires systematic coordination across social, institutional, technological, and economic domains to create coherent and sustainable agricultural transformation. This integration transcends simple coordination of activities to encompass the development of synergistic relationships between different mobilization elements that collectively enhance the effectiveness, sustainability, and scalability of natural farming adoption while building resilient communities capable of ongoing innovation and adaptation. Systems thinking approaches provide the conceptual foundation for integration by recognizing that community mobilization components function as interconnected elements within broader social-ecological systems rather than isolated interventions. This perspective emphasizes understanding the relationships, feedback loops, and emergent properties that arise from component interactions while designing interventions that strengthen system coherence and resilience. Abstract

Entrepreneurs take responsibility of their ‘business’ tad differently than their counterpart, the traditional businessman. A businessman walks on the pre-defined route whereas the entrepreneur creates his own alley-way, which if successful, becomes the rulebook for that trade. Lately, ecological issues have taken centre-stage as climatic changes have endangered the sustainable growth of the business. A new breed of entrepreneurs, alias ecopreneurs, functions in this ‘new’ space and endeavour to frame an innovative business landscape. Ecopreneurs possess singular focus on the safe-keep of the ecology. But in order to sustain the efforts of businesses in ecology, it is imperative that they remain economically viable too. Thus, ecopreneurial process is not only about fulfilling the business’ responsibility towards ecology, but also about the marketability of the product or service. In order to evaluate the ecopreneurial process, organic farming is considered as a case. In this paper, selected organic farms are analysed in an environment - market continuum, developed particularly for this study which is in tandem with the works of Schaltegger (2002) and Blake and Mouton (1964).The study reveals inadequacy of market performance of the individual and farm level ecopreneurs in the state of West Bengal, in spite of their strong inclination towards care for the environment.
