Last few decades have witnessed an immense technological advancement in the education sector in India. ABSTRACT

Agriculture is an important sector of economy that ensures food security of the nation. About 58 per cent of the Indian population is engaged in Agriculture and planners are concerned to increase agriculture productivity. The National Knowledge Commission has also looked into various problems of this sector and made some recommendations from the knowledge perspective. A methodology for depiction of Brown Plant Hopper (BPH) pest incidence on rabi rice crop using Remote Sensing (RS) data was attempted. The reflectance and geographically registered RS images of Feb.12, Mar.13, and April 30, 2009  as well as Feb.23 and March 14, 2007 were used to classify the Godavari district for generation of rabi rice crop area map. The rice crop map thus generated was used as an overlaying layer of rice crop mask in GIS to derive other RS based indices described below over this crop mask. Land Surface Temperature (LST) data product for rice growing areas was generated using rice crop mask. Normalised Difference Water Index (NDWI), Temperature Vegetation Dryness Index (TVDI) onices derived from MODIS data and NDWI from AWiFS data were correlated with pest count data for two years 2007 and 2009.

The increasing pressure of population on land has resulted into over exploitation of land, water and other ecological resources, resulting in water scarcity, land degradation and rapid depletion of ground water-table. Government of India has adopted watershed management strategy to address these problems, but all existing watershed management programmes are mainly fragmented and governed by different departments. This has resulted in formation of providing better service delivery and governance. In this study an attempt is made to identify the scope of convergence between National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) with Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP) for generation of social capital and self-employment in the command area of a watershed using geospatial technology.

The analysis of chromosome behaviour at meiosis can provide valuable information about the genomic composition of both species and hybrids. The basis for this analysis is the idea that chromosomes that pair and undergo chiasma formation are homologous. Where two genomes are present, as in diploids, the expectation is that only bivalents will be observed and where there are multiple genomes, as in polyploids, two general patterns of pairing are possible. In autopolyploids, configurations of multiple chromosomes are to be expected since all the component genomes are homologous and have the possibility of pairing with each other, whereas in allopolyploids, with different genomes, bivalent formation is the expectation. Thus, meiotic analysis can provide an oversight for genome analysis to investigate genetic relationships between the species. Further, chromosomal rearrangements are correlated with pollen fertility in species and F₁ hybrids.  Observations on pollen formation, size and viability can provide useful information, as low pollen viability is often indicative of meiotic irregularities and large sized pollen can indicate the formation of unreduced gametes. In addition, the occurrence of nucleolar dominance has been recorded in many interspecific hybrids.

Introduction and Importance of active site

Proteins are polymers of amino acids coupled by peptide bonds. The constituency of a protein that interacts with a ligand is habitually referred to as the “active site.” Ligands can be proteins, DNA or smaller molecules, such as pharmaceutical compounds [1]. The active site generally lies on the surface of the protein. In some cases, the active site is buried within the protein. Residues with reactive groups (ASP, GLU, SER, CYS, HIS, LYS, ARG) tend to be profuse in protein active sites [2]. The SER-HIS-ASP (sometimes SER-HIS-GLU) named as “catalytic triad” which is a motif, generally found in enzyme active site. Enzymes chip in a significant role in scheming the flow of metabolites within a cell, they catalyze virtually all of the reactions that make and modify the molecules mandatory for biological pathways [3]. The identification of catalytic residues is a key step in recognizing the function of enzymes. The site on the surface of an enzyme molecule that binds and acts on the substrate molecule are called as active site.

Today, when the collection of biological data has been increasing at explosive rate, the processing of these data is needed. It would be extremely valuable if the specialists who know what the data mean were also able to imagine ways to collect, process and exploit these data. Biological and agricultural scientists should note that concepts from computer science, discrete mathematics and statistics are being used increasingly to study and describe biological systems. The specialists, who know the subjects of mathematics, statistics and computer programming, are needed for solving the computational problems in biology. Statistical data mining approaches seem ideally suited for bioinformatics, since it is data rich, but lacks a comprehensive theory of life organization at molecular level, or in the words of I.E. Alcamo “ Keeping up with the directions and application of DNA is a never ending job.” Starting with possible definitions of statistical data mining and bioinformatics, this chapter will give a general side view of both the fields on the statistical data mining part and its technologies and discuss how statistical data mining may be used in bioinformatics.

The development of bio-informatics started with the working of computers and accumulation of data on genes and proteins. There are 100,000 proteins in the human body or 1 million. In the last decade the number of protein sequences gathered in databases increased tremendously, but the key to understand the function of a protein is not its sequence but its structure. Experimental determination of 3 dimensional native folded structure of a protein usually can be done via crystallography techniques. But such experiments are time consuming. Currently there are hundreds of different fully automated approaches to protein 3D structure prediction.

All proteins are polymers of Amino acids. The polymers also known as polypeptides consist of a sequence of 20 different L-m-amino acids also referred to as residues. For chains under 40 residues the term peptide is frequently used instead of protein. To be able to perform their biological function, proteins fold into one that is driven by a number of non covalent interactions such as hydrogen bonding, ionic interaction, Vander Waal’s forces and hydrophobic packing. In order to understand the functions of proteins at a molecular level, it is often necessary to determine the three dimensional structure of proteins. The modern Information Technology techniques like Artificial Intelligence have opened new pathways to researchers. Once ANN has been trained it is capable of producing accurate output for the unknown inputs. Many researchers have tried to analyze the large sequence sized gene to determine the protein, predict the secondary structure of the protein and model its three dimensional (3D) view [11].

ANALYSIS OF CODON USAGE VARIATION

Multivariate analysis methods such as Correspondence Analysis and Principle Component Analysis have often been used to identify major trends of variation in synonymous codon usage among inter or intra specific genes. Genetic codes are degenerate meaning most of amino acids can be encoded by more than one codon (triplet of nucleotides); such codons are synonymous and usually differ by one nucleotide in the third position. The alternative synonymous codons are not used with similar frequency and their usage varies among different genes. Hence there is the presence of Relative Synonymous Codon Usage values. 

SEQUENCE DATA

The gene sequences downloaded from Genbank of National Center for Biotechnology Information that is the nucleotide sequence repository known worldwide, serves as the secondary data used for analysis. Relative synonymous codon usage value of each gene is extracted separately using the Codon Usage software of Sequence Manipulation Suite. These are the raw data which needs to be normalized to be used before application of various multivariate analysis.

Systems Biology is the study of the interactions between the components of biological systems, and how these interactions give rise to the function and behavior of that system. For example, theenzymes and metabolites in a metabolic pathway.With the progress of genome sequence projects and range of other molecular biology projects that accumulate in-depth knowledge of molecular nature of biological system, we are now at the stage to seriously look into possibility of system-level understanding of solidly grounded on molecular-level understanding.Unlike molecular biology which focus on molecules, such as sequence of nucleic acids and proteins, systems biology focus on systems that are composed of molecular components. Although systems are composed of matters, the essence of system lies in dynamics and it cannot be described merely by enumerating components of the system.

History of Social Networking Services

The notion that individual computers linked electronically could form the basis of computer mediated social interaction and networking was suggested early on. There were many early efforts to support social networks via computer-mediated communication, including Usenet, ARPANET, LISTSERV, bulletin board services (BBS) etc.

Early social networking websites included Classmates.com(1995), focusing on ties with former school mates, and SixDegrees.com(1997), focusing on indirect ties. User profiles could be created, messages sent to users held on a “friends list” and other members could be sought out who had similar interests to yours in their profiles. Whilst these features had existed in some form before SixDegrees.com came about, this would be the first time these functions were available in one package. Despite these new developments (that would later catch on and become immensely popular), the website simply wasn’t profitable and eventually shut down. It was even described by the website’s owner as “simply ahead of its time.” Two different models of social networking that came about in 1999 were trust-based, developed by Epinions.com, and friendship-based, such as those developed by Jonathan Bishop and used on some regional UK sites between 1999 and 2001. Innovations included not only showing who is “friends” with whom, but giving users more control over content and connectivity.

I. PUBLIC POLICY CONCERNS

The working of the Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights Agreement (TRIPS) Agreement, 1995 along with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the jurisprudence developed for the last twenty years is a testimony to the fact that although TRIPS is geared to promote the protection of intellectual property rights internationally, yet some controversial public policy issues need to be addressed and solutions devised for addressing these public policy issues otherwise there is a possibility of seeing the demise of TRIPS Agreement or sidetracking it by some other methods which may not be conducive for maximizing the welfare of the international trading community. As all of us know that intellectual property and international trade are mutually inclusive and the minimum standards set forth in the TRIPS Agreement are economically value oriented. The trade offs among and between the members of the WTO need to be balanced on an even keel, otherwise the possibility of camaflouging the TRIPS Agreement and the attendant jurisprudence becomes real. The TRIPS Agreement addresses seven categories of IP rights such as; Copyright and related rights; Patents; Trademarks and Service marks; Geographical Indications; Undisclosed Information or Trade Secrets; Industrial Designs ; and Layout Designs of Integrated Circuits and read with other WIPO Treaties obligates the members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to reduce distortions and impediments to international trade by taking into account the effective and adequate protection of intellectual property rights as well as the procedures for the enforcement should not become barriers to international trade. The TRIPS Agreement also recognizes the need to cater to the special needs of the developing and least developed countries.

Intellectual property rights may be defined as the legal relationships that arise out of an individual’s creative gifts and the communication to society of his or her intellectual creations. Intellectual property is challenging as well as rapidly widening horizon of law. The purpose of law is to encourage and reward creativity and intellectual effort. The prominence of this branch of law in India is partly due to India’s economic structure and its geographical position in the world. Many international companies operate in India either directly or through licensees or agents. Numerous goods, services, and technological developments have overseas origins. Foreign companies often control their interests through contract but they invariably do so by means of copyright law, obtaining of patents or by registration of trade-marks and designs. It follows that in particular circumstances intellectual property remedies are most convenient method of maintaining control, or at least a useful adjunct to other remedies based on contract. Another important factor is the upsurge in “piracy” that is occurring not only in India but also in almost every other part of the world. Piracy may originate outside India, or, it may also originate in lndia. While devising legal apparatus for the welfare and protection of creative people, we must not lose sight of the public interest in the greatest measure of access to information and culture. Intellectual property rights are significant wealth- creating assets and their protection and commercialization are of increasing economic significance. In past the value of such rights was often overlooked and it is only in recent years that the economic potential of intellectual property has started receiving greater recognition. The dawn of the third millennium which has led to the emergence of knowledge capitalism with emphasis on intangible assets such as knowledge, competencies and intellectual property is a defining movement in the history of mankind. It is a defining moment in the history of mankind because the historical forces set in motion by the digital revolution has spawned a new civilization characterized by path breaking inventions and technological innovations and the opening up of the electronic frontier. It is an age of digital renaissance which combines the marvels of the Age of Discovery and the excellence of medieval Renaissance rolled into one. As a result of the information technology revolution there is a transition from industrial society to information society. Convergence of computer networks and communication technologies facilitated by the digital revolution has given birth to Cyberspace which in turn has ushered in knowledge economy. Hence, the intellectual property law faces challenges. In this background the concept, nature and development of intellectual property rights are proposed to be examined. The paper will be divided into V more parts. Part II of the paper will outline the meaning concept of intellectual property and range of subject matter protected by law, part III will examine the jurisprudential justifications of intellectual property protection, part-IV will explore the evolution and development of intellectual property rights under international law, part-V will demonstrate the evolution and development of intellectual property rights under Indian law. And part-VI will conclude the subject.

Introduction

‘IP’ refers to unique, value-adding creations of the human intellect that results from human ingenuity, creativity and inventiveness. An IP right is thus a legal right, which is based on the relevant national law encompassing that particular type of intellectual property right. Such a legal right comes into existence only when the requirements of the relevant IP law are met and, if required; it is granted or registered after following the prescribed procedure under that law. All countries around the world have a national legal system of intellectual property rights which has developed over varying periods of time during the last 150 years or so. It has enabled the grant of property-like rights over such new knowledge and creative expression of mankind, which has made it possible to harness the commercial value of the outputs of human inventiveness and creativity. This is usually done by its orderly use, exchange or sharing it amongst various types of business partners in a complex network of strategic relationships that generally work harmoniously during the new product development process for creating and marketing new and improved goods and services in domestic and export markets.

IPR is a tool for Innovation and reward for it. Innovations are concerned with the commercialization of new ideas; in contrast, an ‘invention’ may not be directly associated with commercialization. As such, innovation may be seen as a process of interaction and feedback during the various stages of the new product development process. An invention is considered as the generation of a new idea or knowledge, which aims to solve a specific technical problem. Inventions could relate to products or processes and are characteristically protected by trade secrets, utility models/petty patents or patents. Utility models/petty patents or patents are granted/registered under the relevant national/regional law by the relevant national or regional patent office. As not all inventions are commercialized, so it is clear that not all inventions result in innovations.

There are many types of intellectual property and its type varies from country to country. The most common types are patents, copyrights, trademarks, design and trade secrets. In this chapter, we will explore multiple comparison tests, with a particular emphasis on three significant tests: least significant difference (LSD), Bonferroni, and the techniques to visualize their outcomes. We aim to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of how to conduct and interpret the results of these comparison tests visualization using the R software.

Treatment Comparison

The “doebioresearch” package is commonly used for testing the significance of treatment groups in various experimental designs such as randomized block design (RBD), completely randomized design (CRD), and least significant difference (LSD).
