5.1 Introduction

Evanescent field absorption spectroscopy is a powerful well-established laboratory technique for chemical analysis. The technique utilizes the evanescent wave penetration at the boundary between two dielectric media in conditions of attenuated total reflection (ATR). One of the media, a thin slab-shaped non-absorbing crystal, is called a waveguide, while the other medium of lower refractive index is the absorbing sample being studied. At each reflection at the boundary of the crystal and the sample, the penetration of the evanescent wave of the guided ray into the absorbing sample gives rise to a reduction of the power propagating in the crystal. The degree of absorption depends on the amplitude of the evanescent field in the sample medium and the number of reflections within the waveguide. The former increases dramatically for incident angles approaching the crystal-sample critical angle while the latter increases with the decrease in the thickness of the waveguide. The number of reflections can also be increased by increasing the length of the waveguide. Thus, to achieve maximum absorption, an unclad optical fiber is well suited for evanescent wave absorption spectroscopy. This is because, unlike the crystal waveguide, the narrow core diameter of the fiber provides a large number of reflections per unit length. Further, the use of an optical fiber to transmit light to a section of its core in contact with an absorbing sample offers the possibility of remote sensing or in-line analysis. These advantages, together with the benefits of simplicity, reliability, flexibility and relatively low cost have motivated a number of research groups all over the world to investigate evanescent wave spectroscopy at the surface of an unclad optical fiber. This chapter will be devoted to the fiber optic sensors utilizing evanescent field absorption spectroscopy.

Agriculture has progressed from labour-intensive traditional practices through mechanization and the Green Revolution to precision agriculture and Agriculture 5.0. This chapter traces that historical development and identifies limitations associated with conventional farming, including inefficient resource use, environmental degradation and weak adaptability. It explains how GPS-guided machinery, sensors and precision technologies prepared the foundation for intelligent systems. Artificial neural networks, deep learning and fuzzy logic now process data from IoT devices, UAVs and satellites to support automated irrigation, crop monitoring and soil analysis. The chapter emphasizes that integrating human knowledge with computational power is increasingly essential for global food security, sustainability and climate resilience.

Modern farm planning involves nonlinear, discontinuous and multi-objective problems that conventional optimization methods may not solve effectively. This chapter examines Genetic Algorithms, Particle Swarm Optimization and Differential Evolution for improving agricultural resource allocation. These nature-inspired techniques can simultaneously address crop yield, water use, fertilizer application, environmental effects and financial viability. Their integration with deep-learning forecasts and crop-simulation systems enables more realistic optimization. Multi-objective evolutionary algorithms identify Pareto-optimal alternatives, allowing decision-makers to balance productivity and ecological sustainability. The chapter also emphasizes explainable artificial intelligence, economical implementation and farmer usability as necessary conditions for transferring evolutionary optimization methods from experimental research to practical farm management.

In India’s National Extension Programme, professional workers constitute the link between the people and the institute created to advance economic and social change upon the character philosophy, technical knowledge and compliance of these workers largely rests for the success of the programme. Hence the quality of these workers and their training is the important element to be dealt with properly and guided wisely.

In early fifties, the Gramsevak / Village Level Workers (VLW’s) served as a key-man in Community Development Programme and therefore, the Government of India aimed at imparting him by better training and supervisory assistance. As a step in this direction, Gramsevak Training Centers were started to impart training to GramSevaks / VLW’s and Extension Officers were appointed in block for better supervisory assistance.

Agricultural colleges and universities were first formed in the belief that farm production could be increased as a result of the systematic application of current technology and agricultural research findings. The mission of these early educational institutions was to scientifically study agriculture with the participation of the farming community; to carry the results to a broad range of farmers who could use them; and to train farmers, extension workers, agricultural teachers and researchers so that agricultural production could continue to be increased on a sustained basis. In many of the developing countries, agricultural education and training have failed to adapt and respond to the realities of rural societies. In response to the urgent need to review and adjust teaching and training in agriculture at all levels. The training is an important tool to overcome the problem faced by the rural people all over the world. The availability of the resource is the crucial determining factors to strengthen the training Programme for the needy people.

The increasing prices of fast-depleting fossil fuels and their environmental impact have driven the quest for alternative fuels for diesel engines. Because of their higher biomass yield, faster growth rates, and superior photosynthetic efficiency when compared to other energy crops like soybean and rapeseed, microalgae are considered as promising candidates for biofuel production (Mubarak et al., 2015). Numerous species of microalgae have been found to have high lipid contents, making them attractive cell platforms for the synthesis of lipids. Their significance as a backup source of bioenergy in the future is indicated by the ease with which their lipids can be transformed into biodiesel (Ren et al., 2021). Tiny photosynthetic organisms known as microalgae are the ancestors of eukaryotic plants on Earth. These organisms range in size from one to hundred microns and are either unicellular or multicellular (Udayan et al., 2022). Due to the genetic and biochemical diversity of their lineages, algae are able to synthesize a wide range of metabolites, including lipids (Manning, 2022). Glycerolipids are the most prevalent and well-known lipid class in microalgae. Glycerolipids are categorized into two classes based on their functions: storage lipids and structural lipids. Membrane lipids, a type of structural lipid, play a crucial role in forming cell and organelle membranes. They typically consist of two fatty acid groups attached to a glycerol backbone, along with a polar group bound to the glycerol structure (Morales et al., 2021). In contrast, polar lipids have a higher oxygen content and possess charged side groups, enabling them to moderately interact with water. Examples include phospholipids and glycolipids (Manning, 2022). Microalgal lipid metabolism predominantly relies on the de novo fatty acid biosynthesis pathway and the triacylglycerol (TAG) synthesis route (Zhu et al., 2022). Therefore, accurately estimating the composition of the lipid fraction is crucial for determining its potential applications, whether as a raw material for biofuel production or for nutraceutical and/or food purposes (Viegas et al., 2020). The production of biodiesel from microalgae presents a novel approach to generating renewable and sustainable energy. Additionally, different techniques, including lipid extraction and transesterification, are utilized to transform lipid-rich microalgae biomass into biodiesel (Gaurav et al., 2024). Microalgae possess thick-walled cell structures, which restrict the release of their bioactive compounds due to the rigidity of the microalgal matrix. Consequently, selecting suitable pre-treatment and extraction methods is essential for effectively obtaining lipids from microalgae while preserving their bioactivity. Traditional methods for lipid extraction, such as Soxhlet extraction, Folch extraction, and Bligh-Dyer extraction, have been used for a considerable time. While these techniques are generally easy to use and cost-effective, which encourages their adoption, they also have drawbacks, including high consumption of organic solvents, environmental pollution, and extended extraction times that can last several hours. Thus, it is essential to investigate suitable techniques that enhance the extraction rate and lower costs while ensuring the bioactive properties of lipids, enabling better industrial applications of microalgae (Zhou et al., 2022). In recent years, the use of nanotechnology and nanoparticles has emerged as a novel approach for extracting valuable metabolites or bioproducts from microalgae. 9.1 Introduction

Nanoparticles (NPs) are particulate matter with at least one dimension less than 100 nm (Christian et al., 2008). Although NPs are naturally present in the environment, manufactured NPs may have distinctive surface properties and chemistry in comparison with natural NPs (Handy et al., 2008). Manufactured NPs have a large area-to-volume ratio and size-dependent properties, which impart novel properties and behaviors that make them suitable for nanotechnology applications (Auffan et al., 2009). Range of applications for NPs has brought about a rapid development of the nanotechnology industry.

10.1 Introduction

There are very few frequency modulated fiber optic sensors. This is because frequency modulation of light occurs under a limited range of physical conditions. The principal one is based on Doppler effect. There are few other circumstances under which the frequency of light is modulated. These include luminescence and Raman scattering. Luminescence has been included in chapter 7under fluorescence based sensors. In this chapter we shall focus on the sensors based on Doppler effect and Raman scattering. In particular, we shall discuss the measurement of blood flow velocity, colloidal particle motion and Raman spectrum using optical fibers.

A fullerene is any molecule composed entirely of carbon, in the form of a hollow sphere, ellipsoid, or tube. Spherical fullerenes are also called buckyballs, and cylindrical ones are called carbon nanotubes or buckytubes. Fullerenes are similar in structure to graphite, which is composed of stacked graphene sheets of linked hexagonal rings; but they may also contain pentagonal (or sometimes heptagonal) rings.

The first fullerene to be discovered, and the family’s namesake, was buckminsterfullerene C₆₀, made in 1985 by Robert Curl, Harold Kroto and Richard Smalley. By utilizing AI, horticulturists can overcome the traditional challenges associated with crop management, resource allocation, and environmental sustainability, paving the way for a more resilient and productive agricultural sector (Garg et al., 2019). The integration of AI into horticultural crop production encompasses a diverse range of applications, including precision agriculture, crop monitoring and management, predictive analytics, automated harvesting, and genetic improvement (Golhani et al., 2018). These applications leverage machine learning algorithms, remote sensing technologies, and data analytics to analyze vast amounts of agricultural data ranging from soil composition and weather patterns to crop health and market trends (Araus& Cairns, 2014). Through intelligent data-driven insights, AI enables farmers to make informed decisions in real-time, optimize resource utilization, minimize waste, and maximize yields (Kamilaris et al., 2017). This chapter examines graphene, graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, and graphene nanoplatelets and their integration with bio-based polymers and natural fibres. It discusses synthesis and fabrication methods, characterization techniques, mechanical properties, electrical and thermal performance, barrier properties, and applications. The chapter also considers dispersion and compatibility challenges associated with incorporating nanomaterials into green matrices. Graphene-based composites are explored for energy storage, environmental treatment, biomedical applications, sensors, packaging, automotive, and aerospace uses. Emerging trends focus on multifunctionality, scalable production, cost reduction, and sustainable processing.

Green composites are emerging as promising alternatives to conventional synthetic composites in response to climate change, resource scarcity, environmental degradation, and increasing demand for sustainable materials. This chapter reviews the current landscape of green composites and examines the challenges associated with their broader adoption. It discusses technological innovations, smart sustainable materials, bio-based nanocomposites, hybrid systems, environmental and economic implications, and the relationship between green composites and sustainable development. Processing limitations, high costs, regulatory uncertainties, and commercialization challenges are considered alongside opportunities for technological advancement. Life-cycle assessment and supportive policies are important for evaluating environmental impacts and accelerating the transition toward circular and sustainable material systems.

Introduction 
Nanotechnology has become a highly influential field in science, showcasing diverse applications and promising trends over the past few years. Nanoscience has been a source of inspiration for material science researchers, encouraging the exploration of innovative methods to synthesise novel structures with significant properties and applications(Kolahalam et al. 2019). Nanoparticles are the core of nanotechnology, with “nano” denoting sizes smaller than a billionth of a hair, specifically below 100 nm (Volath et al. 2008).The focus on small-sized nanoparticles (1–100 nm) has become a global research priority attributable to their remarkable applications in physical, chemical, and biological sciences (Jeevanandam et al., 2018). The term “nanotechnology” was coined by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman in his renowned 1959 lecture titled “There’s Plenty of Room at the Bottom.”(Boverhof et al., 2015).Feynman proposed the advanceof smaller devices down to the molecular scale, asserting that it was not the laws of nature but rather the lack of appropriate equipment and approaches that limited progress in working at atomic and molecular scales(Clunan et al., 2014). In recent times, nanotechnology has transitioned into a mainstream and crucial innovation. When materials are manipulated at the nanoscale, their properties undergo significant transformations, leading to remarkable applications in physics, space science, chemistry, medicine, energy renewal, healthcare, environmental science, mechanics, electronics, civil engineering, optics, and more [Figure. 1](Mourdikoudis et al., 2018; Joshi et al., 2008; Suresh Kumar et al., 2019); AarthyePandian et al., 2019).

Biological synthesis of Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles

Introduction

Use of acid/base is common in laboratories for experiments like titration and proper safety in their handling laboratory is necessary. In this chapter we will briefly discuss about the safety measures necessary to be adopted while using acids/bases in laboratory for any experiment.

Handling of Strong Acid/Base

There are four major points that need to be taken care of while working with strong acids or bases that might be quite harmful if any accident happens.

1. Protect Yourself

Wear a lab-coat and acid-resistant gloves: Always use lab-coat/apron and make it sure that the sleeves properly cover your arms. More importantly, use gloves made of acid-resistant materials and also wear shoes to protect your feet while wearing long-pants/jeans. Female with long hair, must tie her hair properly (with rubber band) to avoid any disturbance caused by appearance in between.

Wear safety goggles: It is important to wear safety goggles to protect your eyes using larger and fitting goggles that cover front as well as sides of your eyes. Always use properly fitting and adjustable goggles because smaller/ loose goggles may not protect the areas around your eyes against accidental acid spills and it may fall down from your face, if it is too loose.

Locate emergency wash area: There must be an emergency washing area nearby the work place or laboratory containing lab spill management kits. All the workers in the laboratory must be aware of using the kits and emergency plans.

Neutralize acid: Don’t panic even if an acid or chemical spill happens. Stay calm and act as quickly as possible. In case an acid spills, neutralize it by using sodium bicarbonate so that they can be cleaned and disposed safely. If acid comes in contact of skin, wash it off under running tap water but do not use/ apply sodium bicarbonate on skin.

Introduction

For proper and efficient experiment to be conducted, experimenters need so many chemicals to deal with. This includes different acids, base, salt, different kind of indicators and so on. Some of these chemicals are safe for health, but some of them are dangerous to health when come in close proximity to our body while some of the chemicals cause health issues on inhaling. These may cause improper functioning of some of our physiological activities. Acids and bases are very dangerous for our tissues when come in our contact. These may cause serious respiratory problem in addition to injuries on coming to our contact. Some chemicals are exploratory yet they may cause even death of the person working with them in laboratory. Therefore, mere use of the chemicals in laboratory is not only the objective of the experimenter. The person working in laboratory should also be concerned about the proper use and handing of the chemical while working with it. Thus, every researcher of an institution who has to work with chemicals in a laboratory should be made aware about the chemicals to be used in the laboratory and the consequences if any mishandling of a laboratory chemical occurs. Not only these, suitable precautionary measures should also be known to the researcher along with ensuring the availability of the required safety equipment/installations. Hence, a proper understanding of the ways of handling of chemicals in a laboratory is of prime importance for the personals like you who are working or have to work in laboratory.

Safe Handling of Chemicals in Laboratory

Safe use/handling of chemicals in laboratory include minimized exposure to chemicals, maintaining safety data sheets, proper labelling, storage, segregation, and transport of chemicals for personal hygiene.

Introduction

We come across a variety of chemicals every day in a laboratory. While some of them are relatively safer, others are extremely hazardous. Thus, it is very important to know the potential hazards that can be caused by the chemicals present in the laboratory and the safety measures needed to be followed to avoid the hazards. Additionally, we should also be aware of the steps necessary to be taken on such hazardous situations. According to IUPAC, a hazardous chemical mean the chemical which has the potential to cause damage in various ways. In a laboratory, there are chemicals that might be irritant, carcinogen, respiratory fibrogen, systemic poison, asphyxiant, flammable, etc. which have the potential to cause hazard to the workers or environment. Therefore, it is important to use appropriate procedure to reduce the risk and protect the health/safety of laboratory personnel, the public and the environment.

Types of Hazards Associated with Chemicals

Chemical hazards: The hazards caused by chemicals can be broadly classified into three categories.

1. Health hazard: This is also known as toxic effects of chemical. The risk associated with a chemical in laboratory depends on the extent of exposure and the inherent toxicity of the chemical. Many chemical reactions form the product that might be much more toxic than the reacting chemicals. For example, inadvertent mixing of formaldehyde (a common tissue fixative) and hydrogen chloride results in the generation of bis(chloromethyl) ether, a potent human carcinogen. For most of the chemicals, the route of exposure (through skin, eyes, gastrointestinal tract, or respiratory tract) is more important (Figure 17.1) that must be considered during risk assessment.

Due to the depletion of their raw material supplies, traditional fossil fuel use should be reduced. There is significant hope for biofuel production (Gangl D et al., 2015 ; Seo et al., 2017), and in the past decade, interest in using microalgae has been steadily increasing (Gangl D et al., 2015). The algae group consists of various photosynthetic eukaryotic species that are typically found in both freshwater and marine environments. With an estimated 30,000 to 1 million species, algae range from single-celled cyanobacteria to multicellular forms, each having distinct traits. Microalgae, specifically, grow rapidly and absorb carbon dioxide as they develop (Guiry and M. D., 2012). Many industries have benefited from the utilization of microalgae species for the good of humanity. Food, medications and antibiotics, wastewater treatment, biofuel, biofertilizers, and CO2 fixation are a few of the significant uses for microalgae (Singh et al., 2018 ; Ananthi et al., 2021). Compared to first-generation biofuels, the manufacturing of algae-based biofuel is more advantageous to the environment (Alalwan et al., 2019). Microalgal biofuel production is a greener alternative to first-generation biofuels (Alalwan et al., 2019). It can be cultivated in less ideal locations, such as the ocean or non-arable land, and doesn’t require fertile soil, which helps prevent rivalry with food crops for freshwater and farmland (Winckelmann et al., 2015; Correa et al., 2020). Microalgal production systems can help treat wastewater or convert CO2 into oxygen without interfering with the food supply (Onyeaka et al., 2021; Prasad et al., 2021). Nanotechnology and nanomaterials are becoming increasingly popular across many fields for their useful properties, with global research exploring their role in biodiesel production and processing. To speed up the development of biodiesel production, advanced nanotechnology is being emphasized to achieve higher yields at lower costs. Microalgae are a promising source for biodiesel production, and various nanoparticles can significantly boost the efficiency of harvesting them. Reusing nanomaterials and combining cell harvesting, disruption, and extraction processes also help reduce costs. Moreover, different nanocatalysts can enhance the efficiency of biodiesel conversion (Verma and Kuila, 2020). Currently available techniques for microalgal harvesting include chemical, mechanical, biological, and electrical ones to some extent. Harvesting microalgal biomass is most often done by mechanical means since they are the most dependable (Grima et al., 2003 ; Christenson et al., 2011). But, in order to increase productivity and reduce operating and maintenance expenses, these procedures are frequently followed by biological or chemical flocculation phases. For maximum separation efficiency and minimum cost, two or more of these techniques are frequently used. For instance, processing costs can be significantly decreased by combining centrifugation and flocculation-sedimentation (Schlesinger et al., 2012). Novel approaches like biological treatments have the potential to further lower operating expenses.

9.1 Introduction

The objective of this chapter is to design an icloud and cayenne based perimeter monitoring system for agricultural field. Mobile app is designed to monitor the sensory data. The complete system comprises of two sections field device and mobile app. Field device comprises of NodeMCU, battery, motion sensors and laser sensors. The system is designed to monitor the agriculture field perimeter with motion and laser sensors, which are deployed at different locations of field. The sensory data is transmitted through NodeMCU and received at mobile app which can be accessed by authorized person. The same data can be accessed on webserver from anywhere in the world. Fig.9.1 shows a block diagram for a system. Table.9.1 shows the component list.

In order to make the next leap forward from the current generation of technology, scientists and engineers have been developing Energy Applications of Nanotechnology. Nanotechnology, a new field in science, is any technology that contains components smaller than 100 nanometers. For scale, a single virus particle is about 100 nanometers in width.

An important subfield of nanotechnology related to energy is nanofabrication. Nanofabrication is the process of designing and creating devices on the nanoscale. The inherent level of control that nanofabrication could give scientists and engineers would be critical in providing the capability of solving many of the problems that the world is facing today related to the current generation of energy technologies.
