Introduction

Farming has undergone significant changes since the Green Revolution in the late 1960s and economic liberalisation in the early 1990s. These changes have led to a shift in focus towards a few specific enterprises due to factors such as a decrease in farm size, fluctuating commodity prices, the need for livelihood diversification, and a shortage of labor. (Ponnusamy and Kousalya, 2017). The current scenario in the country indicates that the agricultural area under cultivation is decreasing and more than 20 percent of the current cultivable land will be converted into non-agricultural purposes by 2030 (Gill et al., 2005). 80 per cent of farm families belong to the small and marginal farmer categories. Hence India is putting more emphasis on agriculture in research as well as in technology transfer through many extension activities.

Precision farming is a site-specific farming method that works on a large scale, while IFS divides the whole land into fragments. Both Precision farming and IFS work on the concept of “no wastage”. When we install some components of precision farming in IFS, such as remote sensors, yield mapping, SSNM, yield monitors, and some others, the yield and quality of output increase. Initially, farmers may not get much profit from them because their installation cost is very high, but after a while, they earn more profit from this. IFS are good for Indian farmers because many enterprises are connected to each other in IFS, and farmers can get income from different sources. It generates employment opportunities for other farmers. It’s good for those with less land, and when we include PF in IFS, entrepreneurship opportunities are generated for educators like farming device installation, operation, maintenance and many others.

The economic system of Pakistan is fundamentally based upon agriculture (Govt. of Pakistan, 2004-2005). The total surface of Pakistan approximately 796,095 km2, of which 8.3 million km2 are uncultivated and 22 million km2 are farmed (Govt. of Pakistan 2015 2016). Despite an average yearly increase of 2.7%, agriculture contributes 21% of Pakistan’s GDP (Govt of Pakistan, 2004–2005). Farming is a sector whose fundamental and commercial models combine. Agriculture’s importance to the economy may be examined through three distinct perspectives: 1) as a source of nutritious food for the country and raw materials for internal industry; 2) as a way to generate currency from abroad and 3) as a source of products and services for local industries and the global market (Govt. of Pakistan, 2015-16).

They are connected in dryland ecosystem restoration level or degradation (Assouline et al., 2015). In recent decades, integrating trees with crops for food and wood production has received considerable attention in both tropical (Garrity et al., 2010) and temperate regions (Palma et al., 2007). The growing of trees in combination with the agricultural crop is a land management practice that farmers have been practicing since the ancient period. Agroforestry being old as an art and new in its scientific terms has been gaining importance in the modern era due to shift of world from technology to nature in search of resilient way of sustaining livelihood (Dutta et al., 2023, Sharma et al., 2023 Bishaw et al., 2022, Agnoletti et al., 2022). The simplicity of the agroforestry system is the flagship reason of its widespread applicability and reliability in agricultural domains. There has been change in the world perspective regarding the nature and natural resources in recent times. Although there has been forest over 31 per cent of the world’s total geographical area (FAO and UNEP, 2022) but the stabilization of ecosystem and sustainable development is difficult without subsequent interaction between the tree, crop and livestock component on farm lands, being collectively called as agroforestry.

Increasing fresh water demands for ever growing population and it has increased by 600% over the past 100 year (Wada, et. Al, 2016) the annual increment rate 1.8 % whereas the present growth rate is less, only 1 % but this figure may be optimistic. The global water demands will grow significantly over the next two decades in all three components as: Industry, domestic and agriculture (U.N, 2018) industry and domestic demand will grow faster than agriculture, but agriculture demands will remain largest (U.N, 2018). The global water demands for all purpose will increase 20% to 30% by 2050, up to 5,500 to 6,000 km3 per year (Burek et.al, 2016), whereas, agricultural demands will increase by 60% by 2025 (Alexandrators and Bruinsma, 2012).

Mango (Mangifera indica) is a tropical fruit tree that is well-known and cherished for its delicious, sweet, and juicy fruit. It is one of the most widely grown and economically important fruit crops in the world, primarily cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions. Mangoes are not only enjoyed for their taste but also for their nutritional value, as they are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

The banana (Musa parasidiaca) belongs to the Monocotyledons class, the Zingiberales order, and the Musaceae family. It is indigenous to Southeast Asia. They thrive in tropical and subtropical climates and are widely grown in countries such as India, China, the Philippines, Ecuador, Brazil, Uganda, Colombia, and Indonesia. A banana’s average length is 7 to 9 inches, and its diameter is 2 to 3 inches. The innermost layer of the pericarp is the endocarp. The segments are also called “liths”, and the space inside each lith is a locule filled with juice vesicles, or “pulp”. From the endocarp, stringlike “hairs” extend into the locules, which provide nourishment to the fruit as it develops. Some of the guava cultivars, which are used to produce seeds-free fruits, are triploid (2n=3x=33) while some are diploid (2n=22). It is primarily grown in tropical and subtropical nations including India, China, Thailand, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Mexico, Indonesia, and Thailand. The nutritionally rich, vitamin and mineral-rich guava is referred to as the “poor man’s apple”.

One of the fruits that is grown worldwide most commonly, grapes are said to have a longer history of human interaction than either rice or wheat. Apart from their nutritional significance, grapes are today regarded as one of the most lucrative crops. The grapes are farmed for a variety of uses, including the manufacture of raisins, wine, juice, canning, and table grapes. More grapes are produced worldwide than any other fruit crop. Approximately 11 million hectares are devoted to growing grapes, which yield 75 million tonnes yearly. More than half of the world’s supply of grapes was produced in Spain, Italy, and France. Grapes are cultivated in India in both tropical and subtropical climates. In Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, commercial grape production only started in the last 40 years.
